As Gargul's presence fades from your awareness, Ragnarök stirs, awakens, and sits up. Around you, the treants seem to sigh as one. It moves through them like a breeze in the treetops.
"Welcome back, Ragnarök Scarecrow," Babarong says. "I am pleased that the lord of life and death has seen fit to return you. And," he adds, turning to the entire group, "we are pleased that you succeeded in your quest. The healers will begin extracting the Trannarom."

Returned to the land of the living, Ragnarök wonders about the...um...interesting-looking new dwarf who seems to have joined the party.
Faust, too, has questions for Zero, wondering about what kind of spell he cast to transform himself into the creature you all saw.
Yeshua returns from his hunting expedition with enough meat for everyone. And, since the treants don't eat meat, there's more than enough meat for everyone. In a day or two, you may have issues with leftovers. But for now, you can feast.
Yeshua also turns the group's attention to the treasure you found. There is a ring, a wand, a scroll, a potion, a chain shirt, and a set of bracers.

DM Kathy Wednesday May 21st, 2014 10:53:21 PM
You examine the treasure. Ragnarök is interested in the bracers, but recalls that he got a pretty big item last time, so he's being polite.
Toregan is interested in the chain shirt.
Yeshua and Truman respectively poke and sniff at the various items, but in the end they aren't terribly interested in any of them.
Faust examines the Ring of Counterspells. He recalls how they work; a caster casts a spell into the ring, then somebody wears the ring. Whenever that specific spell is cast at the person wearing the ring, the ring automatically counters the spell, with no action required on the part of the wearer. It is a useful item for anyone who feels susceptible to a given spell.
Faust, being a caster, could cast a spell into the ring himself. Or, he could hire somebody to cast a spell that Faust himself cannot cast--but first, he would have to find such a person.
Faust also suggests that the scroll and the wand be considered "party treasure," at least for the time being, although the wand may not be much use.
[Your DM reminds you that it would have been really useful against those darned spores.]

Ragnarök goes to check on Yngvar, but it will have to wait. The healers emerge from their grove. The older female treant is carrying a vial containing a shimmering purple liquid. The healers and Babarong approach Mywhyrr; Babarong motions for you to join them.
"Drink this, little sister," the elder healer says. "Drink and be calm. Drink and be well."
Mywhyrr eyes the vial suspiciously, but in the end she accepts it and drink. A few minutes pass, and then a sigh seems to move through her. She relaxes visibly, then looks up with a little smile. "That was good," she says. Her voice is light and clear, with no sign of fear or tension.
"Now," says Babarong. "Now, we need you to be brave. Give me your talisman so we may examine it. If it is not harmful to you or your tree, we will give it back. This is my pledge to you."
Mywhyrr looks up at him. Doubt and anxiety creep back into her eyes, but after a long moment she takes the talisman off and hands it to the treant. "Please don't be too long," she says.
Babarong turns to you. "Is there anything else you can tell us about the talisman?" he asks.

Faust takes a second look at the talisman, but fails to discover anything new about it.
"I'm afraid that is all I'll be able to tell about the talisman, that it certainly contains a malicious necromancy spell. It seems to mimic the effects of a drug as well, so it's likely she'll suffer ill effects from being apart from it for too long."
"Ergo, we might need to treat her as a drug addict, keeping her away from the drug, but still giving her some, though gradually less and less, to avoid abstinence effects, which can be just as harmful as the drug itself.", he finishes, considering a quite grim possibility of the spell in play at the talisman.

Toregan moves over to the talisman and looks it over, seeing if it has any special marking that would identify a maker, or at least something that would help identify its function. As he looks it over he remakrs dryly, "I really need to pick up something that allows me to see magic auras from the Catacombs. Without something like that, my knowledge of spells is effectively useless."
Turning to Zero once hes taken a look at the talisman, he says "The dryad's tree was poisoned, and a couple of druids brought her here to heal. They also crafted an amulet to "help" her recovery, but the amulet is quite obviously harmful, as it has a potent necromancy aura. If I had to guess at its effect, it would be keeping the dryad's tree from healing as well as doing as Faust said and acting as a drug so that she will always wear it."

Rag returns from the taciturn Wizard and observes how the Treants take good care of Mywhyrr. He joins Toregan and Zero has stories are told.
"There's much to say about this Jungle Master Zero... more than just treacherous Fauna and Flora... there's also a group of... well... Druids like you who seek to rid this place form all forms of civilization... be it good or bad. But in this process they don't shun to destroy the Jungle itself or to turn its inhabitants against any 'non-believers'... We suspect that even Mywhyrr here has been mislead by these Druids.
They are part of an organisation called D.A.R.E. and we're... trying to stop them. However their organisation appears to be far larger than we anticipated. Have you not heard of D.A.R.E. before?"
DM Kathy Sunday May 25th, 2014 11:28:35 PM
As you watch for any effects, you bring Zero up to date on your current mission. Zero has not heard of D.A.R.E.
After some early hesitation, Mywhyrr does not seem troubled by the removal of her talisman. "I feel all right," she says. Then, "Perhaps I'll spend some time with my tree." She walks over next to her tree and sits beside it. Is it your imagination, or are the tree's leaves drooping a little less than they were before?
Whatever effect the talisman's removal will have, it will apparently take time. The Peaceflower syrup wears off of Mywhyrr (or so the healers inform you), but she does not panic an beg for her talisman back. That, you take as a good sign.
The healers come to you with a gift. "You brought us a good supply of Trannarom," the eldest says, "at no small risk to yourselves. Please accept this gift of our appreciation."
She hands each of you a small vial of the same purple syrup they gave Mywhyrr.
Peaceflower Syrup: This nonmagical, purple-colored syrup is made from the rare peaceflower. When you drink it, any Fear effects are immediately removed, and you are immune to Fear effects for 1 hour. This item cannot be sold in the Catacombs
At the end of the day, Babarong comes to speak with you. "Mywhyrr is improving," he says. "It is a very gradual improvement, but it is happening. The talisman, as you said, was harmful to her. I do not know what these druids intend, but their methods are unacceptable. The other treants have agreed. We are no longer their allies."
(StevenVdB) Ragnarök HP 1/51 Monday May 26th, 2014 3:50:56 AM
A sigh of relief escapes the monk's mouth as Babarong states that they are no longer D.A.R.E. allies... He accepts the syrup and stores it away safely only to retrieve the neckless they were given earlier!
"Now if only I would have remembered this one I may not have had such a headache... Better remember this syrup for future unpleasant occurences..."
Rag waits for his friends to say something and then he considers it acceptable to question the treants about what they know from DARE...
"Master Babarong... Perhaps you now can tell the tale how you came to know DARE? Do you know where they call home?"

OoC - who's taking care of the loot? Someone should pay a visit to the Catacombs (if DM Kathy allows this of course). Personally I'm a bit short on gear with a total of gear and gold at 15305 Gp. Average on lvl 7 is 23500. How much gear does everyone else have?
Most valuable findings: Ring of Counterspells: 4000 (intresting for Faust) Bracers of armor +3: 9000 (intresting for Rag) +1 Mithril Chain Shirt: 2250 (interesting for Toeregan) Wand of Ghust of Wind: 4500 (DM says interesting against spores :-) )
Suggestion 1 Faust and Toregan are the oldest Cthonians ans likely also behind on gear value. They get the items that they find interesting. Faust takes the 4000 Gp ring and Toregan gets the 2250Gp armor.
That leaves 6750 from the bracers and the wand if we sell them (I'm not adding the other nick nacks)
Sales value for the Mitril Shirt is 1125. Za'Reed, Yeshua, McZero and Rag all take 1125 to start with. 6750 - (4x1125) = 2250
Toregan claims a cheaper item so the rest of the gold is divided by 5 or 450 Gp per person.
Final loot distribution of the 4 most expensive items would then be: Faust: Ring of Counterspells Toergan: Mithril Chain Shirt + 450 Gp Za'reed: 1575 Gp Yeshua: 1575 Gp McZero: 1575 Gp Rag: 1575 Gp (Let's'hope we hear from Marty or Za'reed's loot will go to the group. Leaving us with few tanks... )
Suggestion 2 (my personal favorite) Faust and Toregan are the oldest Cthonians ans likely also behind on gear value. They get the items that they find interesting. Faust takes the 4000 Gp ring and Toregan gets the 2250Gp armor.
That leaves 6750 from the bracers and the wand if we sell them (I'm not adding the other nick nacks)
HOWEVER those Bracers are very interesting for Rag but are worth quite a bit. In return Rag will add the following items from his personal belongings to the loot pile: Bracers of Armor +1 (1000 Gp - selling value 500 Gp) Cloak of Resistance +1 (1000 Gp - selling value 500 Gp) Amulet of Natural Armor +1 (2000 Gp - selling value 1000Gp) Gold : 500Gp
So Rag can add 2500Gp of selling value and then like Faust would claim 2000Gp worth in selling value...
So suggestion 2 then leaves 4750 Gp from the Wand and the items Rag adds to the loot pile.
Sales value for the Mitril Shirt is 1125. Za'Reed, Yeshua, McZero all take 1125 to start with. 4750 - (3x1125) = 1375
Toregan claims a cheaper item so the rest of the gold is divided by 4 or 343.75 Gp per person.
Final loot distribution of the 4 most expensive items would then be: Faust: Ring of Counterspells (sales value 2000Gp) Rag: Bracers of Armor +3 (sales value 4500 Gp - 2500Gp added to the pile = 2000Gp) Toergan: Mithril Chain Shirt + 343.75 Gp Za'reed: 1468.75 Gp Yeshua: 1468.75 Gp McZero: 1468.75 Gp (Let's'hope we hear from Marty or Za'reed's loot will go to the group. Leaving us with few tanks... )

Re: treasure, he's opposed to both ideas. "Both of your ideas make several incorrect assumptions. First, how long you have been here should be irrelevant, as we all contributed to the fight. Second, you're assuming that a few people are behind others, but you cant make that assumption, as you have no idea how much others of us have. Third, who cares what people came in with? We all fought in this battle together and that has nothing to do with the past. Both ideas smack of favoritism and I'm absolutely opposed to that. I feel we should take an equal share, rather than one or two get 4x as much as others. If someone wants an item, great, but that should come out of their share, not just leave leftovers for everyone else. if we're going to do that, then I want the most expensive item, and then I'll go sell it and keep the proceeds. Do you see the problems that could start? We calculate equal shares and then break it out from there. Do you want it to be where each person keeps what they find, since they know they'll be losing out in the long run? And how are we deciding who gets what? If we're on the losing end, then why not just keep what each person finds and forget the rest of the group... Again, not a good solution... I have no desire to be part of a socialist group, and while democracy isn't much better, its the best solution for a group to have unity. I've been in other games where we didn't each get equal shares and all it did was cause strife and arguments... Something we don't need here since we seem to be a good team and have worked well together in the past couple of battles... "

Toregan thanks his hosts for the gifts. "You are quite welcome," the healer replies. "You and your companions are very brave."

It occurs to you that an alliance with the treants may be possible, and is certainly worth pursuing. Yeshua is content to watch for the moment, and Zero mostly helps by staying out of it.
Ragnarök's attempts at diplomacy are well-meant, but awkward. Faust, considerably smoother, catches Babarong's attention. "An alliance," he says thoughtfully. "I do not know if we are ready for such a thing. We allied ourselves with those you call D.A.R.E., and you can see how that went. It may be that we are through with alliances for a time."
But he continues mulling it over. "Still," he says at last, "a better alliance might be a wise idea. And I see that the sun is setting. I suggest that you sleep here tonight, and I will discuss the idea with my kin. And in the morning, we will see what has been wrought."

Toregan then sets up his gear and prepares for another night in the grove.
"You know..... Its been pointed out that the Trading Post still doesn't have an actual name. Even with all the people I've traveled Cthonia with, no one had any idea for what else to call it. I think I have a name for it now. What do you guys think about Protector's Point? Seems to fit what we've been doing all this time."

Spending the night in the wonderful Grotto is al he can wish for. The wonderful greens, tasty water and intoxicating fresh air makes the Walker of Alemi smile. Wouldn't it be just the most perfect place to live? No... he should not think that way as it would only harm the Treant's home if it were spoiled by humanoids with their craving for civilisation... even though that would be a thought more fitting for those D.A.R.E. followers the Monk considers this grotto a sacred place that is to be protected at all cost. Being allowed to spend the night here Crow considers to be an honor.

"Still, I completely understand your position and fully agree with it, would do the same if our positions were swapped. Rest assured that this is not a one-time offer, any time you have anything to discuss with us, feel free to call us out to discuss it.", says Faust, just before he gets his sleeping bag ready for the night.
He won't go to sleep without checking out Mywhyrr's condition as well as the amulet.

Zero leaves the diplomacy to the diplomats and gets down to business.
"Traveling companions we be, so I figure we need to etch a few things into stone. Things that make the difference between life and pushing daisies. For instance, sleeping and marching order. Oh, and there is this..."
Zero Drew out a wand from his backpack and showed it to Faust. "Yer a wizard are ya not? Well maybe you can flick this little stick around on occasion to bolster my defenses. I believe ya call it Mage Armor. It would plenty kind if you'd cast it on me here and there. Before battles of course. I'll hold it for now, but pass it on to you on occasion if ya don't mind."
Zero looked at Faust with hope, but also with some doubt. It was the look of someone that had grown use to rejection.

You leave Babarong and the other treants to their discussion, and make preparations for the night.
Ragnarök reflects on what a pleasant place the grotto is. It would indeed be a lovely place to live, but the treants have already claimed it as their own. They probably would not welcome human settlers, no matter how friendly. At least, not at the present time.
Toregan points out that the Trading Post needs a better name. If for no other reason than to stop you guys from calling it the Outpost. :)
Faust goes to check on Mywhyrr. She and her tree seem to be doing fine.
Zero reminds his new companions that the group should have standard marching and watch orders. He also produces a wand, and asks whether Faust would be willing to use it to cast Mage Armor on him.
Yeshua and Truman offer themselves for middle watch, although it's probably not necessary to keep a watch here in the grotto. As Zero said, though, it might not be a bad idea to work out a standard watch order for the group.
Za'Reed is quiet as you bed down for the night. [Marty, it's good to see you posting again! Pleae reply to Jerry's emails as soon as you are able.]
In the morning, Babarong approaches you. "I am sorry to disappoint you, my friends," he says. "The elders feel that an alliance is not in our best interest at present. I do not believe that they would ally themselves with anyone, regardless of motives, after being so cruelly deceived by the druids of D.A.R.E." He pauses, then adds, "Mywhyrr is doing much better this morning. I think you may safely tell her friend that she and her tree will be able to return to their home by summer's end."
With that news, there is little else to keep you here. I will assume you leave the grotto unless somebody has something they want to do first.

Before turning in for the evening, Zero used his remaining allotment of goodberry spells. "Somefin' tells me were going to need them" he muttered as he stowed them away.
Zero slept deeply that night, though his snoring made it difficult for others to do so. In the morning he was all business. He mumbled his prayers, ate his breakfast and said his farewells.
He whistled happily as they left the grotto, but a short while later his mood soured somewhat.
"So where ya want me to stand?" he asked. "Better for us to figure it out now, then to wait till we're wrapped up in a cocoon of another Moonflower, eh? So here's how I see it. I'm not the stealthy sort, but I got good peepers. I like to travel in animal form... makes me feel safer. Some of those forms can fly, some can't. Some are loud, some quiet. Some of those forms make people nervous. Some you'll just want to hug and pet."
"If one of ya is a scout, then scout. Me, I think I'll take to the skies, but never too high or ahead of the group. Don't want to attract attention. I'll just buzz around and let my peepers peep."
"As for sleepin, well I'm as good a guard as any and me senses are better than most. How's about I take a middle shift?"
Once everything was settled Zero warned everyone not to freak out before he turned himself into a winged three-headed monster. The goat, lion and dragon head gave it a way to many of you; a Chimera.

During the night Rag has difficulties to fall a sleep. Zero's snoring is just too darn loud! Still somehow the monk must have fallen a sleep somewhere during the night dreaming of Woldsblood... the Lands of Rest... Gargul... somehow it doesn't make sense but it does feel comforting.
The next morning Rag is sadened by the Treant's decision although it's perfectly understandable. "Perhaps over time our paths will once again be entwined... if ever we can do something... fare thee well Master Babarong"
As they walk home, Rag likes Toregan's ideas for giving the Post an actual name. Protectors Point sure has a ring to it.
"It reminds me of Woldian hero's now long gone... the Golden Dragons, The Emerald Talons ... we may perhaps also come up with a name for our ragged bunch too... the Jade Protectors? Jade's green right? And green somehow sounds fitting for the Cthonian Jungle. Protector's Point could certainly be named our home and we can be named after it... "
Later when Zero explains how he would be able to blend in with the group and serve as tank or scout Rag chuckels as Zero turns into a Chimera and flies off...
"... okay... didn't he say he doesn't want to attract any attention?? Blend in?? Sure... everyone here is very aquainted with Chimera's so who would turn their attention on Zero-Chimera!

Toregan gathers his gear and readies himself to head back to Trinawee. "I'm fairly good at keeping myself hidden, and I'm a good spotter. I'm usually one of the ones scouting, though I prefer to keep my distance from any foes we may find. I'm usually on point, and if we're choosing shifts in advance, I'll take the last shift. I'd need to prepare my spells around then anyways."
As Zero morphs into a chimera and takes to the skies, Toregan lets out a low whistle. "Well now, that's quite impressive. We'll have to warn the post about our new companion. We wouldn't want them to accidentally shoot him. if he's seen in one of his forms."

Faust accepts the wand from Zero, "Not a problem, mr. McHero, this spell even when cast by a novice lasts for at least an hour, so it's not hard to have it up all the time."
Faust is able to sleep peacefully knowing that things are good and that Mywhyrr is doing well and given how tired he is, even despite the loud snoring dwarf.
Come the next morning, he doesn't hide his disappointment in not being able to make an alliance, but understands the treant's position, "Not a problem, master Babarong, merely not having your kind as enemies anymore is already a marvelous improvement over our situation days ago. And as I mentioned yesterday, if you ever need us for anything or change your mind, we can be found near the sea, we'll have everyone informed that if a treant approaches, they shouldn't fear it nor be hostile to it."
Once everyone is ready to leave, Faust says his goodbyes to Babarong and the healers, whom the group had more contact with and makes a point to check if Mywhyrr is still in good condition. "My sense of direction isn't exactly the best, but will it be faster to go back to Trinawee now or after we report back to Pen? And yes, a proper name for the Trading Post is indeed in need, Protectors' Point does have a nice ring to it. I wouldn't worry too much about a name for ourselves, soon enough something memorable will happen, but for now we are mere 'thunder walkers', hahaha...get it? Because we walk in the thunderlands?"
"As for marching order, I usually have Wolfgang scout from the sky, Scarecrow usually takes the front, which has saved our skin couple times now, we usually have Dondarin here hang in the back, he's an accomplished fighter if something get us from behind, but fares better at a range, so he's in prime position to attack anything on the front as well. I stay close to Dondarin in the back, I'm way better attacking from afar, as you could tell by my pathetic display once a plant got near me back in the other day..."

As you walk, you discuss the possibility of renaming the Trading Post. A few of you like the sound of "Protector's Point."
You also discuss strategy and marching order. Toregan has good eyes and is stealthy, but he's not much for melee. It might be best to keep him to the back, and let Zero scout in animal form, with Wolfgang's help. Ragnarök might be good in the front as well, providing he has learned the difference between "most monsters can't hit me" and "no monsters can hit me." :)
You also discuss where to go next. Of the three possible destinations (Trinawii's tree, Auntie's village, and the Trading Post), the Trading Post is farthest away. Your best option, then, is to visit Trinawii or Auntie first. Of course, you don't actually need to go back to Auntie's village at all, though it might be considered polite.

After discussing the possibilities, you decide to head for Trinawii's tree first. You set out, bidding farewell to Babarong, Mywhyrr, and the treants. You leave the coolness of the grotto, and are soon enveloped in the heat of the jungle.
This time, you encounter no problems on your journey, though you pass near the spot where you fought three megalanias. The carcasses have been reduced to bones, and some of the bones have been carried off.
As you travel, you perhaps take some time to tell your new friends Zero and Yeshua all about Auntie. Auntie is a very old female kobold who speaks excellent Common. She knows her mind, and isn't shy about trying to get her way. [Perhaps some of you go into more detail than that....]
Around noon on the second day, you reach Trinawii's tree. At the moment, there is no sign of the dryad.

You chat briefly with Trinawii, but press on so as to reach the kobold village by nightfall.
It is late afternoon when you approach the village. Ka has returned, and soon comes forward to greet you.
"I am happy to see you!" he says. "I am happy you are safe. Travel is very...." he searches for the right word in Common, and manages "...danger. You will stay here tonight?"
Upon finding that you do, indeed, intend to spend the night, the kobolds arrange an impromptu celebration. You sit down to a meal of river fish and jungle fruit, for which the kobolds proudly give you steel eating utensils. "As you see, we trade much!" Ka says.
Auntie asks about your mission, and listens intently to your story. "You did well," she says, nodding slowly. "Perhaps we should send an envoy of our own to the treants. Now that trade has come to the jungle, there seems no end to the possibilities!"
There are songs, and stories, and general merry-making before you and the kobolds retire for the evening.

Yeshua and Truman, not real comfortable around kobolds and the like, try to be polite as possible, though they don't have a lot to say. He is friendly to Ka and Auntie, as they seem to be the leaders and he doesn't want to damage the relationship the group's built up with them. One of the downsides of being a Lost child is that social interactions are awkward around all but others of their type...

You sleep well, after your evening with the kobolds. You are awakened by the sound of rain on the leaves--and the feel of rain on your face if you chose to sleep under the stars. Your preparations are a bit of a scramble as you try to keep things dry. Rain in the jungle isn't entirely unpleasant, but wet cloth and leather can grow mildew with astonishing speed at these temperatures.
You bid farewell to the kobolds and make your way back to your boat. The rain tapers off by mid-afternoon, and does not trouble you again. After a couple of uneventful days on the river, and a ride on the lift, you are back at the Trading Post.

Zero switched back to his natural dwarven form when they arrived at the Kobold camp. At first his manner was much more cautious than usual, but when the merry-making started up he really started to relax. Perhaps, a bit too much.
"Bleeeeeeeel" he burped after he guzzled down his sixth drink in a row. "Who wants ta arm wrestle for the next round, eh? You? You want to arm wrestle a dwarf? How about a Girillion? Ya ever arm wrestled a Girllion, eh? Now's yer chance! I'll even let you pick which arm!!"
With each drink his confidence grew and his balance worsened. Eventually both got the better of him, as he passed out while relieving himself at the edge of camp. As he lay on the ground he snored loudly and occasionally muttered unintelligible words. But you didn't have to understand his words to know that something as tormenting him.

The rest of the day Zero was quiet. He made no mention of the night before. It wasn't until his arrival at the Trading Post that he finally spoke up. "Anybody wanna join Zero for a drink. First round's on me."

The Trading Post is about the size of a small village, with its primary buildings inside a wooden palisade. Outside the palisade are fields of grain and orchards of fruit. Palisade, orchards, and fields all suffered damage from a recent dinosaur stampede, but are slowly recovering.
You introduce your new companions to Pen, a busy, well-dressed gnome who welcomes you cordially. "And your mission?" he asks. "How did it go? Did you find the treants?"

After you report in, you are free to explore. Yeshua's reminder sends you to the General Store, where your pins will allow you to access the Catacombs.

You greet the news of a possible trip with varying degrees of enthusiasm.
"Well," says Pen. "It's not necessary that you leave right this minute. By all means, you should take a few days to relax, and see how things are going here. The palisade," he adds, "is being repaired--slowly, but it's happening. I'm sure you noticed that we replaced the lookout tower that came down, and we've repaired the buildings. Repairing the palisade means finding the right timber, which means trips out into the jungle, which need to be guarded. So it goes slowly--but it goes."
Unfortunately, Pen has no information to help you with the question of where to look for D.A.R.E. But, as he said, you don't have to leave right away, and you can discuss the matter in the meantime.
