The Noble Hunt
Uninvited to the Party

Friday May 30th, 2014 4:04:25 PM

Taking Ceri's message to heart everyone heads to bed early to get some rest. The night passes quickly, but the lack of detail in her not leaves you wondering what the morning may hold. You wake up early, alert for you next assignment, as you head to the dining hall.

Upon entering you notice a well dressed gentleman in a blue silk shirt sitting at the table. You can tell by how uncomfortably straight he sit on the bench that he has has been brought up with the finest of manners, but he lacks the snugness typically seen of the those born into high society and you suspect he is a man's man or set on the behalf of someone either with money or high political office. Adventurers, we have a situation of the most delicate sort. Unfortunately, due to the sensitive nature of the matter I cannot reveal the details unless you agree both to help and not to speak of it to anyone until after the job is over. What I can tell you is that it will be dangerous, involves some very evil people, and if you are successful it will be the the benefit of all of Rum. You will also be well compensated for your troubles. More than this I cannot say unless you agree to help and to keep this a private matter.

Gerox stumbles over his eyes bleary and his breath foul. His hair is ruffled and he seems quite content and relaxed for some reason. He looks over at the others and says, "Oh stop blustering. You know you we are going to do this. This is the kind of stuff we do. Stick our noses into caves, go on long boat rides without much thought and help damsels in distress. Especially cute ones.

He looks at the well dressed gentlemen and says, "Peza says we are in. She speaks for the group. If the others just want to sit around and drink, drool and fart, we two will handle it for you but somehow I think they will tag along."

Barratore waves off Zalmay and Edson and answers Peza, "I'm in. He's explained all I need to know."

The minotaur reaches across the table and helps himself to a third plate of food. The details will be all hashed out Peza and Gerox, and he still had some last minute cash to get a few things if need be

The already rigid man goes stiff as a board at the mention of vampires, nearly dropping his coffee. Err...well...since the young lady has already accepted....yes...at least we think so. As I mentioned before, this is a delicate situation. We have reason to believe that there is a vampire that has been setting up various residents across town. The bodies of several urchins have been found with puncture marks in their necks. This would be troublesome enough, but they appear to be specially fond of rich folks. Several merchants and political leaders have vanished. Most recently was a rather liked fixer responsible for much of the finer architecture in the city. Before he disappeared was reportedly heard talking about an invitation he received to attend a hunt some ways North of the city. After some investigation we have reason to believe others disappeared after receiving a similar invite.

So, I want to spread the rumor that you've come into a great sum of money. Let's say you've killed a dragon. We'll try to lure this vampire into inviting you for a "hunt." Expect that he will attack you with his friends during the hunt. Be vigilant. Then turn the tables on him and bring him to justice. I have Letters of Marque for you giving you permission to kill him AFTER he has sprung his trap. We don't know who all is involved in this situation, but we want them all. The last thing we need right now is a panicked populace just when we are trying to get folks to resettle here rather than a more established city, or for the vampire in question to be alerted to our pans.
The man sets his cup down looking to see how you will respond to the news.

Hmm...this sounds interesting thinks the barbarian. "We've killed a vamp before, sounds fun. But not sure how the rumor thing will work out for ya. We've quite a following in town here. And we spent two days drinkin' and enjoyin' ourselves at the local tavern. No mention of dragonslayin'. Not sayin' ya can't try, but it'd be little out of character for us." He says. "Sides, we ain't exactly rich folk that would be good sport for this hunter. It'd be easy to see, we are the hunters. Just lettin' ya know the things I see."

Barratore about spits his ale, "Us as soft target rich folks? Gotta be the dumbest vampire in the Wold." he states flatly. The fighter look s a bit queer at Zalmay and teh comment of wolves and tigers, but decides it must be a cleric thing or other learned bit of religious wisdom and mentally shrugs it off.

As to what Peza was going into, it made his head hurt a bit and so he tunes her out. It would be explained later, likely more than twice.

In truth the vampire thing did not sit well with Barratore, last one took control of Brom and the barbarian had cut him down. Sure he was trying to be nice and not kill Brom, but still. Brom was dangerous and what if he succumbed himself somehow. No vampires and mind control did not sit well at all with Barratore. Maybe Zalmay would have a solution for that

Gerox thinks for a moment and agrees with the others, He asks, "I think your plan is sound in theory but my friends are correct. While we are not Gold Dragons, we do have a certain reputation in Rum. I doubt that the vampires would just assume we were bait. No we have to change the playing field. Maybe some kind of disguises? What kind of resources do we have at our disposal? For instance, if we all buy some hat of disguises, we could appear different? The hats could just be loaned to us. Then we could pose as something else. Maybe a nobleman and his family plus retainers.

The other question is what street urchins? How does Rum, such a new city have street urchins already? That is just disturbing!"

DM James
Tuesday June 3rd, 2014 12:37:46 PM

The man listens quietly to your questions and takes a minute to think before speaking. I think you have some preconceived notions about wealth making people soft, despite the fact that you are much wealthier than most the citizens of Rum. You need to keep in mind that everyone in Rum gave up their past lives to travel to an unknown land and seek adventure, wealth, or a second chance. Those with money still seek excitement. Have you never seen trophies mounted on peoples walls? Great boars heads or large antlers hung over the fireplace? There is thrill in the hunt for many. The more dangerous the hunt the better the story, even if the conditions are somewhat controlled. Surely you must understand. From what I hear a member of your own party hunted down a viscous boar on his own and got gored in the process.

Responding to Peza he adds, Anything that promised a nice trophy would draw interest in the right circles. As for the people being targeted, it appears the vampires are feeding randomly off the entire population, but that those being invited to these "hunts" have had money and could hold their own in a battle...not unlike yourselves. The type of people that would do well hunting a boar, or putting up a fight if they were the ones being hunted. As far as their jobs, the merchants shops were taken over by relatives or their customers left to a competitor. Those that worked for the city will be replaced by someone appointed by the people.

As for a time frame, it depends on if we can convince them to extend you an invitation, but I would expect it to be at least a couple days.
As far as what help we can offer you, I'm afraid I was not given any instructions on that matter. I started by coming here because I knew you were capable and assumed would be well equipped.

ooc: The term urchin includes those who are inadequately protected or supervised. Good luck preventing that. Also, if you look up hirelings, something like an expensive lawyer only makes 10gp a day. You are not the wealthiest on the island, but you are definitely in the upper class.

Barratore feels his head turn a bit, he was even more puzzled by the explanation then the original issue. His idea of a vampire was a cowardly craven creature of the night out to prey on the weak and defenceless. That did not describe the party. Why those of means sought out adventure, that he could identify with, quite easily. It was the reason he was here in the first place. A couple days and wait, what the what?

While we in the Woldian League fight to protect the innocent and defend good, we are a mercenary group. What compensation do you offer for us hunting these vile, nasty and troublesome beasts? Anything thing or group of things, that can take down the most powerful members of a society is not to be trifled with. I suspect you guys can come up with some assistance in materials to bring this threat down. I suggest some hats of disguise if you want us to follow your plan. Brom was in agreement with Barratore. One vampire was an interesting challenge, but more than one was another matter altogether. The man picks his glass of coffee back up and takes a sip. I think you will find you have plenty of time to make your preparation, I just ask that you remain discrete about it. The last thing we want is for them to get tipped off. As to the number of vampires, he says as he scratches his head, well, there may be only one and there might be more. I suppose they might not even be vampires. All we have are theories, but my hunch based off the number of bodies and disappearances is that there are at least two. It is also possible he has servants who can look after him during the day hours controlled either through a greed for gold or magic, so stay on your guard.

When Gerox brings up the subject of Beastlords and compensation a large smile spreads across the mans face. I know nothing of these Beastlords, but it is understood that if you do a job you expect to get paid. You would be hired by the city, but those most directly responsible wish to remain anonymous until the threat is eliminated for fear of retaliation and the well being of their families. They have allowed for two options as far as payment goes.

Several of the men who disappeared had valuable items on them when they went hunting. Weapons and armor, some of which were family heirlooms. If you desire this then you can take your pay out of what you find.

If not, then we can hire you on a cash basis. Each member of your group that participates will get 6,000gp with 1,000gp upfront and the rest paid upon completion of the job. However, if this is done we will require any valuable items you find to be turned over to us. We will return what we can to its owners. Everything else will become the property of Rum and be used to help the families of the previous victims, including those from the streets.
(Nice diplomacy check).

I don't think we can change our appearance enough with our reputations around town without magic so we will have to forgo that plan. I wonder if one of us can be bait though? The vampires or whatever obviously like a challenge or they are trying to cripple the upper crust. Either way, with our reputations and wealth beyond the normal citizen, maybe we can make something of it.

Peza is our leader. If they are trying to kill the leadership, she might be an obvious choice to act as bait. She has skill with weapons also so if they are looking for a challenge, she might represent enough of one. We have to find a way to stick close to her while seemingly leaving her vulnerable. You listen closely as the gnome sorcerer negotiates payment for the groups' services. Despite his short stature you can see the excitement and passion burning in his violet eyes as he brings up two possible offers. One for gold and the other a vague promise with the possibility of great wealth. Perhaps it is his gambling nature or the exciting promise of unknown treasures, but the gnome is instantly attracted to the idea of lost heirlooms whose history is is often as valuable as the items itself. Besides, how better to get someone to give up their claim to something valuable than offering them gold and buying them out before they know what they are giving up?

Once the arrangements are worked out the man sets down his coffee and stands to leave. Very well. Please remember to keep our arrangements private until the job is over, and not to kill him until after the trap is sprung so that we can be sure to catch all who are involved. If you will pardon me, I have some rumors to spread. I will leave it to you to determine how best to prepare. With that he gives a slight bow and heads out the door.

The morning is taken up with your usual routines, shopping and reviewing the rules of proper ettique.

That evening Lord Edson is ready to makes his rounds, buying drinks for the League Adventurers and working to give off an air of superiority as he looks down on those around him. At Gerox request he even buys a large selection of bar food ranging from fried shrimp to Leviathan jerky. Even as the drinks are being served only to the League Adventurers, you soon find yourselves with a veritable entourage of followers. Some who seek free drinks, some who some who see the makings of a great night and want to be seen and say they were present, and some who have suddenly become interested in the WLA and are talking about joining in the morning.

As the drinks flow the barkeep approaches the young "Lord". Sorry to trouble you, but it is policy to collect some payment when a tab gets as large as yours. Of course I trust you, but if I don't ask the others will expect to run up equally large tabs, they aren't as honorable as you.

A good time is had by all, but the morning reveals little to show for your efforts other than the after effects of an over abundance of alcohol, but no one said this job would be easy. At breakfast after your third night of reputation building a courier wearing the livery of the Tremblay family delivers a message to Ceri who in turn passes it to Peza. The message consists of a folded piece of parchment secured with wax and stamped with the seal of the Tremblay family (a boar's head surrounded by six stars).

My Esteemed Adventurers,
Tales of your accomplishments with the weeping statues have reached my ears and elicited a spark of interest within me. It has become my habit to invite persons of interest to my home for dinner, and while I normally extend such invitations only to the nobility, I believe your deeds merit an exception. If I am convinced that your reputations are not unfounded, I may have information of interest to you, and perhaps even a business opportunity.

Your attendance is requested at my mansion north of the city at sundown on the eve of the next full moon. Activities include dinner prepared by my servants and a moonlight hunt of whatever fast natural creature we can find near the grounds. Daylight hunts are far too easy for a man of my skill, and based on the stories I presume that the same holds true for you. Please respond by the day after tomorrow by courier, letter, or in person.
With gracious intent,
Lord Edward Tremblay

(OOC: I've been deliberating this for some time, but I've decided that I need to take a break from the campaign indefinitely. With RL and other obligations as they are now, I don't think I can continue to do my part in this group. With a break here at the start of the next module, this might be a good time to step away. I've enjoyed playing with you all. Thanks for everything, and maybe I can return some time in the future.)

Barratore hoists a glass towards Edson, "Well done friend" Teeth bared in a minotaur grin, Barratore looks over to Brom. Lifts his tankard and tilts it back. Like the human, he had little to do to prepare for the evening. He would bring his blade and bow, after all they would be going on a hunt and so he didn't even need to come up with a pretense to bring his weapons.

OOC Having some issues updating my character sheet. Actually have forgotten my password to my Google account. Traveling for a few days and will find it this weekend. I have decided to take arcane mark for my cantrip and my 4th level spell will be dimension door. I got 3 +3 con bonus for hitpoints for a total of 6.

The courier leaves after handing Ceri the note, and as soon as he does you turn your minds to the task at hand. Barratore raises his glass to Lord Kazil as he realizes that invitation to a hunt was the perfect explanation for the group to come armed. As you eat your breakfast the talk turns to tactics. How and when to respond to the message, if it might be wise to explore the grounds during the day, and even the idea of laying a trap or a hidden cache of supplies...just in case.

Peza is glad that things are going as planned, but the idea of a moonlit banquet foes little to ease Peza's mind. She has no doubt as to the danger that lays ahead.

ooc: Sorry for the missed post. My wife got off work early and didn't feel gaming was more important than our anniversary. Please make your plans and preparations, and be sure any orders from the catacombs are taken care of asap.

DM James The hunt will be in 2 nights. Lord Edward Tremblay's grounds are about an hour from Rum. There is no closer tavern or inn. They are all located within the city.

Barratore agrees with Peza and Brom. He too works on shifting his sleep a bit to greater lengths in the day of sleeping and longer stints at night of being awake. To Peza's part, he takes Edson to a tavern near as they can get in a good establishment to meet and greet and drink and eat. Unlike Brom, the minotaur does not tapre his evening and nightly drinking. recovering from a good row into the deep night is not an issue for the young fighter

The next two days pass by quickly as you try to determine what you should do when you reach the Lord's grounds. Ceri sees that a message is sent on your behalf accepting the invitation and Peza gets to work thinking on plans to recon the area. Everyone does what they can prepare. Brom and Barratore begin shifting their sleep schedules so that they will be ready for an all night fight. Brom is even dedicated to the point of drinking very little ale for the next two days so he doesn't screw up his plan. As the time passes Edson sits polishing his armor and Gerox practice his new spell, opening a door and stepping through and asking everyone to help think of practical uses for it.

As you meet back at the WLA Ceri asks about your plans.
Ooc: Please let me know if you have any other plan to make. If not I will advance things to the day of the feast.

With preparations in place for the upcoming hunt Gerox and Barratore scout the land leading towards the Lord's property. It is a beautiful day out and the flowers are in bloom. You wander for hours before realizing you made a wrong turn and have been traveling in circles. It then takes you the rest of the day to find your way back to Rum. Ooc: Sorry, no checks of any kind were made so I cannot give you any results.

Finally the appointed day arrives. Most of you choose to sleep in late in order to be well rested for the evening banquet. You find that Ceri left instructions for a late brunch to be prepared for you, as well as a clearly marked map to help you find your way. After eating your fill and polishing your gear everyone heads out, making their way to the edge of the city. You figure it should take about an hour to reach the Lord's banquet.

As the time arrives ... Peza leads the way .... following the map .... also letting Lord Edson play his role ...

On the day of the big plan, Edson eats little. His stomach is in knots and he doesn't want to add to his stress level. He cleans himself up, and gets into character to help the ruse along.

When the time comes, he heads downstairs and gets ready to follow his guide Peza.

Brom tries to stay relaxed on the day of the hunt. He has a late lunch and again eats a smaller meal of bread, cheese and dried meats shortly before heading out. He gets more than he would eat and offers some to the others. He knows it could be a long night and he doesn't want hunger to become an issue. He also has a few drinks with his meals, just to calm his nerves. Waiting is the worst thing for him now. Too much thinking about what ifs.

When not eating, Brom spends time sharpening his sword, getting his gear ready, and thinking...too much thinking.

Barratore wakes up earlier than he wanted, too excited to sleep. Flopping about on the bed for nearly an hour, he gives up on falling back asleep and crawls out. Without anything else he can think of, Barratore goes though his gear. Ok 10 minutes down now what. He goes through it again. Putting on his armor, the fighter decides to burn off some excess energy. A nap in the late afternoon will set him right and so he goes for a two mile run in full gear. Back at the compound in less than 20 minutes, he moves through his long morning combat routine. Blade, bow, hand and horn. The others were probably awake and he could smell food cooking, putting the time close to noon, maybe an hour before.

Barratore heads his, dunks himself to rinse off the sweat and sits at a table for something to eat. Still petty full of energy and nearly giddy with excitement.

Barratore takes a late afternoon nap and is ready to go

On the trip, he takes up a position just behind and to the right do Edson. Noticing nothing out of the ordinary, and those things elude him
