On the Trail

DM Kathy
Monday June 16th, 2014 10:13:35 PM

Diaosha has given you plenty of time to prepare, but really, you were all but prepared when you met with her. The next day passes quickly, and the following morning you set out from the Trading Post.

It is a warm morning, and likely to get warmer as the day advances. You make your way to the lift, and use it to descend to the jungle floor. Down here, it is even hotter, and humid enough to make a person think longingly of gills.

Diaosha, who was enthusiastic at the start of the trip, is beginning to wilt a little. "Mercy, it does get hot here, doesn't it?" she pants, fanning insects away.

She is determined, though, and she doesn't slow you down too much.

Around mid-afternoon, you see something ahead of you on the trail. No, just off the trail. You approach cautiously, and find a wounded tapir, struggling feebly but otherwise not moving.

Survival or Knowledge: Nature check, DC 18 Highlight to display spoiler: { It's really unusual for a wounded animal to just lie there like that. It should be trying to get away.}

Perception check, DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { You notice some movement in the bushes. It is Ss'Hathk kobolds! They are clearly lying in wait for anyone stopping for the tapir!}

Zero the Chimera was happy to be back in the jungle. As usual, he took up position in the skies, flying here and there, always sniffing at the air for any sign of trouble.

When he saw the Tapir, he decided to fly in to take a closer look.

Ragnarök notices the kobold ambush in time, and calls out a challenge.

Toregan promptly hides himself, waiting for the attack.

Yeshua and Truman sneak around, and attempt to charge into the midst of the kobolds. This is made somewhat difficult by the fact that the kobolds are split on either side of the trail, and charging into their midst pretty much means charging right into the ambush. The siblings manage to come upon half the kobolds from an unexpected direction.

Zero is also unexpected, and unleases a breath weapon on the kobolds! Bonus! He misses Truman and Yeshua! :)

Three kobolds step out in response to Ragnarök's challenge. They seem unwilling to approach the monk just yet, and instead raise blowguns to their mouths. Three darts fly at Rag! The first one would hit, but Rag catches it! The second one misses. The third hits! Rag takes a point of damage and must make a DC 18 Fortitude save or take 2 points of Dex damage. Then the three kobolds seem to get very angry.

The other three kobolds are dealing with a blast of icy breath! [Jeff, there is no such thing as a Con save. :) I looked it up; it is a Reflex save.] All three take damage.

One of the kobolds on this side looks a little different from the others. He's a little scrawnier, and has numerous charms and totems hung about him. And--oh, look, he has a wand. He taps one of the other kobolds with it, and some of the kobold's wounds heal up.

The other two kobolds seem to get very angry. They step up to attack Zero. They swing massive (for kobolds) axes, and one connects! Zero takes 7 points of damage.

Faust and Diaosha remain on the trail for now.

And the map.

Zero goes after his kobold attacker with all the natural weapons at his disposal. The kobold drops to the jungle floor, and Zero takes a final swipe at the one next to it.

Ragnarök feels the effects of the poison, but nevertheless steps forward to engage one of the kobolds. He aims a powerful blow, but the creature is nimble and dodges out of the way.

Yeshua and Truman step up to engage the shaman, and their coordinated attack does a lot of damage.

Toregan decides to help out his friend by casting an Entangle. Unfortunately, since Ragnarök already moved, he is now caught in the spell's effect. Ragnarök, make a DC 12 Reflex save.

One of the kobolds is caught in the Entangle and tries to free himself. He succeeds, and begins making his way toward the path.

The other two kobolds save, and decide to stick around and engage Ragnarök. They swing their axes at him, and both hit! Rag takes a total of 25 damage from the two attacks. Meanwhile, the poison continues to course through his veins. Rag must make another DC 18 Fortitude save or take 2 more points of Dexterity damage.

The shaman takes a step back and taps himself with the wand. His wounds close a bit.

Zero's remaining opponent takes a swing at him with his axe. It is a terrible swing, and he barely manages to hold onto his weapon! [Natural 1!]

And the map. I ruled that there weren't enough plants on the trail for the Entangle spell to work there, mostly because mapping an Entangle spell makes my head hurt. :)

Faust steps in front of Diaosha to keep her from getting injured.

He gets some ingredients, conjures a spell and points with his index and middle fingers at one kobold, firing an emowered ray of scorching energy at it.

I couldn't find any rules regarding the interaction of Entangle and fire, so I assume it is safe to shoot fire at entangled opponents; if it is not, I'll amend the action by using Magic Missile instead.

Also unsure if the tapir blocks line of sight/effect; I'm assuming it doesn't.

Move Action to I14, firing Empowered Scorching Ray at K3, hitting touch AC 23 for (18 + 11) * 1.5 + 3 = 46 fire damage.

(@DM Kathy : not sure about the sequence of orders here... does the poison affect Rag prior to the entangle or vica versa...

Secondary. All three Kobolds were holding blowguns I suppose last turn... this turn they immediately swing their axes. As such I'm assuming they will have dropped their blowgun (free action) and taken their axes (move action that draws and AoO) and then attacked (attack action). If my reasoning is correct, Rag gets 2 AoO's. 1 vs Kobold 1 and 1 vs Kobold 3)

(Reflex save vs Entangle 28 - SUCCES)
(Fort save vs Poison 18 - SUCCES)

The Kobolds drop their blowguns and draw their axes... the nimble monk takes advantage of this moment of inattentiveness and lashes out at each of them...

AoO vs K1 hits AC31 - Nat 20 - Crit check hits AC23 - Damage 4+9+4 non lethal
AoO vs K2 hits AC17 - Damage 9+3 non lethal

But then Rag staggers as the Kobolds dispite their size deliver massive blows!! He can see the Grey One's eyes in front of him again... His mind is strong enough to withstand any further effects from the poison... The Monk doesn't feel to great... the poisin ravaging his muscles... the massive blows reducing his lifespan to half... He just hopes help is under way.

"One more attack... it might just take out one of them..." Rag thinks as he launches a Flurry of Blows vs K1 (the one that already has 17Hp damage)

Zero handily accounts for his other kobold attacker.

Faust steps up and fires a Scorching Ray that leaves one of the kobolds barely alive. [OOC: Don't you get 2 rays at this level?]

Ragnarök does not get Attacks of Opportunity, because neither dropping a weapon nor drawing a new weapon provokes. He does, however, unleash a full Flurry of Blows on one of the kobolds, dropping it unconscious. [OOC: The effects can happen in whichever order you like, so your saves were successful! Yay!] The poison seems to have run it's course; no further saves are needed.

Toregan begins firing at the kobold that is already lightly toasted thanks to Faust, so Toregan's first shot drops him. Toregan [I assume] switches targets and keeps shooting.

Yeshua and Truman renew their assault, and do more damage to the kobold shaman.

[OOC: Jeff anticipated me, but here is a table of actions in combat, and whether they provoke Attacks of Opportunity.]

The one remaining kobold warrior is caught again by the Entangle spell. [Ragnarök also needs to save against the Entagle again. But, hey, he's done with the poison!] The kobold manages to free himself, and backs onto the path. Is he fleeing? It's hard to say.

The kobold shaman uses the Withdrawal action to put some distance between him and Yeshua. Is he fleeing? Again, hard to say.

Truman and Yeshua doggedly pursue the shaman, refusing to give it a chance to possibly escape...

Truman can charge it while Yeshua has to move normally to get to it... But Zero has moved to tackle the shaman...

Yeshua's unsure why Zero is trying to subdue rather than kill the shaman, and calls out, "Why are you letting it live? Let's eliminate it and get on our way!"

(Holding actions until answers from DM... But plan is to attack and kill whatever kobolds are left...)

Sometimes it is necessary to know where a felled opponent is, so I don't take them off the map unless I absolutely have to. The kobold on the path, K2, is at I-6. Seeing the kobolds attempt to flee, you all spring into action. Yeshua and Truman manage to tackle and restrain the shaman, as Zero guards against escape.

Ragnarök tries to grapple the remaining warrior, but the kobold is still enraged and is able to elude the monk. He almost immediately had cause to regret that, as Toregan's arrows and Faust's Magic Missiles slam into him. He collapses to the forest floor.

Your opponents are all either dead, unconscious, or captured. In the sudden silence, you can hear Diaosha sobbing.

Faust, concerned, turns to Diaosha to ask what is wrong. "Th-they were trying to kill us!" she cries. "Oh, I don't know if I can do this. Is it always like this?"

Ragnarök is injured, but goes to check on the kobold he knocked unconscious. The little warrior is still unconscious, but of course he won't stay that way forever.

Yeshua goes to check on the wounded tapir [presumably tying up the shaman or something beforehand?]. The creature is terrified, but Yeshua finds that the injuries are not as bad as it first appeared. Of course, if you release it now, it will probably run terrified through the jungle, smelling of blood and attracting predators.

So, you have a wounded animal, some kobold prisoners, and an upset civilian to deal with. Ah, the glamorous life of an adventurer!

Toregan scans the area carefully before heading over to one of the kobolds and begin to search it. "Well, we've spent some time in the jungle and we've gotten into a few fights. Only once did we get attacked by kobolds though. The rest of the time it was animals or insects."

After cataloging what the kobold had on him, he moves to the next while calling out to Rag. "I'm thinking of leaving these guys here to return to their village with a warning that if they ever attack this trail again we'll deal with them permanently. It'll discourage them from trying this again more so than the ambush group just disappearing."

(Crappy summer course hours are crappy. I've dropped the course (for a multitude of reasons) and I'll be back in posting shape in no time.)

Assuming the Shaman to be the leader of this little task force, Rag wonders if it would make sense to cast a Mark of Justice on him... of course it could very well be that this would be equal to a death sentence.
So the Monk consults his friends in this matter. As for his wounds, hopefully there's someone able to patch him up? Otherwise he will use some Ki to heal a bit.

Zero took up position over one of the fallen kobolds. He would stand guard until all of the prisoners were secured.

Yeshua agrees that the mark of justice is a good idea, especially since it will make it clear to the kobolds that his group means business...

He'll continue binding up the tapir's wounds and trying to soothe and calm it... (Continuing Wild Empathy, since takes about a minute = 21; Heal 17 to try to wash off the blood as best as he can to loosen the smell). ALSO, Truman will go sniff and tear into the kobold corpses, looking for anything of interest... Perc = 18

"It certainly isn't anything too out of the ordinary, but isn't something that happens everyday either. And, as Dondarin mentioned, any such events usually involve animals. But fret not, ms. Diaosha, that is why we are here and do what we do."

"I'm not against releasing the survivors, but I certainly would prefer to make a more informed decision after having some clue as to why we got attacked. My money's on random raid for loot though, but let's see if we can find anything at all."

Diaosha is somewhat reassured by your explanations. She stops crying, though she still looks a little tense. She sits on a nearby fallen log and watches the proceedings, wide-eyed.

Yeshua is able to calm the tapir somewhat, though it is clearly eager to escape. He cleans it up as best he can. The jungle is a dangrous place, and there are no guarantees, but he thinks the tapir at least has a chance to survive the day if it is released.

Ragnarök watches Yeshua bind the creature's wounds, and kind of wishes somebody would do the same for him. But this is what happens when you let a druid do the healing; the animals go first! :)

Zero stands guard while Toregan searches the kobolds. Some of the weapons appear to be masterwork quality, although small-sized. There are blowgun darts that seem to have been treated with poison, and of course the shaman had that healing wand. He also had two flasks of what appears to be alchemist's fire.

This does appear to have been a simple bandit ambush, though this tribe of kobolds is rumored to be head-hunters. The question remains, however, of what to do with your prisoners.

"Oooo... a healing wand... do you think anyone is able to use that?!?" Rag thinks to himself as he eyeballs his spellcasting friends.

As some seem to agree with the Mark of Justice, Rag takes time to perform this powerful spell. It takes close to 10 minutes to perform the spell. Rag draws a symbol of a small crow on the Shaman's forehead and ends the spell by saying: "You shall no longer participate or orchestrate evil acts against any traveller in Cthonia or else where. Should you fail to obey to these fair constraints you shall feel your spell casting capabilities ruined by 4 caster levels..."

Rag assumes the others will tie the remaining Kobold...

Yeshua sadly isn't a druid and merely a ranger/lost child of mittiri. He'll release the tapir and move on to his friend. His magic is little and all he can really do is to help stabilize his injured colleague Rag. Heal 17.

@DM - did we find anything on the corpses?

Zero continued to stand watch, but in the back of his mind he contemplated the Tapir. What was Mother Wold's plan for this creature? Was its destiny to die today and nourish the creatures of this forest with its body, or was it supposed to live another day?

And what did Tapir taste like? Did it taste different when you were in the form of a Chimera?

Zero licked his Chimera lips, but then turned away from the wounded animal. He would have to settle for trail rations in his dwarven form for today.

Toregan goes over to the Kobold leader once he is finished looking through the gear. "If you can understand me, listen well. We're letting you go this time, since we believe enough life has been lost today. However, if we ever find you attacking travellers again, we'll not show you such mercy again. Warn the rest of your tribe as well."

Toregan picks up the wand and puts it into his haversack, along with the poison darts. "I'll hold on to these for the time being. I can use the wand to heal people if need be. Speaking of which..."

He goes over to Rag and takes out his old wand of cure moderate wounds, using a charge to heal Rag. Seeing that he still has injuries, he uses another charge.

CMW 92d8+3): 10

27 charges left for CMW

Ragnarök places a Mark of Justice on the kobold shaman and explains its meaning. At the kobold's puzzled look, Rag thinks to have somebody translate his words into Draconic so the kobolds understand. They don't look happy about the situation, but there's little they can do about it.

Yeshua releases the tapir and performs basic first aid on Rag. Toregan follows up with a couple of taps from his wand.

Zero wonders what tapir tastes like, but ultimately lets the creature go.

And yes, you did find things on the corpses, which I outlined in yesterday's DM post. Here it is again:

Some of the weapons appear to be masterwork quality, although small-sized. There are blowgun darts that seem to have been treated with poison, and of course the shaman had that healing wand. He also had two flasks of what appears to be alchemist's fire.

Now that their friend is somewhat healed, Yeshua and Truman are ready to continue on their journey, unless the group has other plans? If the rest agree, the pair will move out to the flank about 50' into the jungle and continue scouting...

Back to full health, Rag feels a lot better. Only the poison in his veins causes the Monk to be slightly less agile than he normally is... (@DM Kathy: how long will the poison last?)

"Before they leave, please ask them in their own language why they were here... were they instructed to lay this ambush by someone? Why here!? Or... did they know we were coming??"

With everything that has transpired over the past few weeks, Rag wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't a coincidence...
