House on a Hill

DM James
Wednesday June 25th, 2014 3:05:19 PM

Seeing nothing more on the trail you carefully make your way to Lord Tremblay's mansion. The thick woods blot out the light around you, casting eerie shadows that seem to flit about the ground as the branches sway in the wind. After a while the path becomes broader and well-maintained. Following it for about a mile, the path slowly begins to climb a wooded hill, atop which stands a two story building with a large chimney at the side and a double-door entrance in the front.

You can see a small path leads to the left around the house, presumably to a stable. In a clear area to the right stands a long wooden table with eight chairs (one slightly larger than the others, perfect for a minotaur). Brom's keen and attentive eyes note several servants are busy setting dishes, glasses, and silverware at each place. Four vertical wooden poles surround the table, each holding an unlit lantern about 7 feet off the ground. Close by a thin man with iron-gray hair stands on the paving stones just outside the front door of the manor, directing the servants as they go in and out of the house. The scent of cooking food floats down the hill from the manor whenever the door opens.

Amidst the din of servants preparing for the banquet Peza quickly picks out the man most likely to be in charge and locks eyes with him as she approaches, making sure to drop "Lord Kazil's" name within earshot. Suddenly the man blows an old horn, the type typically used to inform nobles on the ground of guests arrival, sounds. Its low resonant tones cutting through the air.

As the girl moves up the hill Edson dismounts and hands his reigns to Gerox and Barratore who lead the horse back around to the stables as the "Lord" waits for someone to approach him before introducing himself. A moment later the well dressed man with gray hair who blew the horn approaches and "Lord Kazil" steps forward to meet him. The man bows low to Edson, showing great respect as he introduces himself as Cameron, faithful servant of his Lord. Lord Tremblay sends his greetings. You are a little early, but he should out shortly. Feel free to look around the grounds, the banquet will be served at sunset. Please let me know there is anything you or your companions need.

As greetings are exchanged Brom and Barratore scan the area and note that the table in this area is set for eight guests. Each place setting features three different plates and a dizzying selection of forks and spoons. The lantern-poles should be more than sufficient to light this entire area during the meal, and the hill slopes down to the south and provides a nice view of the hillside and the nearby land.

On the northwestern edge of the hill Gerox follows a well-trodden path leading down to the east. About halfway down the hill the path branches into three parts. One branch ends a clearing in front of a building that looks like a stable and a small house constructed of wood and stone. Another branch leads west to the front of the manor, and a third leads south to a small door in the garden wall behind the mansion. Quickly he makes his way to the stables where he unsaddles the horse, noticing it is acting slightly nervous and keeps looking to the back of the stables. From here he can easily see the stables also includes a kennel where three large hunting dogs are kept.

He then takes off his riding gloves, and moves to his seat. Seeing his master seated Brom plays his part as guard to "Lord Kazil" and accepts the offer to look around the grounds. As he look around he notices that the grounds are immaculately kept, devoid of any tracks despite a stable being located on the other side of the mansion.

Peza also follows the path around the building, taking the other branch leading to the garden. It is surrounded by a small hedge wall, over which she can see a beautiful array of flowers and an ornate vegetable garden with plants chosen as much for their appearance as for their taste. Making her way to the door she determines that it leads to the grounds keeper's house, a small building clearly designed to keep the help out of sight and out of mind when not working.

After finishing with the horses Gerox moves to the kennels to take a closer look at the hounds. Something about them sparks his interest and after scanning the area for other servants he casts detect magic and scans the area. Looking about, the only auras he detects are those on his own person, but the one thing he does notice is that the animals in the crates are not hounds, they are wolves.

The sky begins to glow orange with the setting sun and Peza and slowly makes her way back to the table and "Lord Kazil". Taking her seat, she notes that the servants are dedicated to their work, but finds nothing concerning about their actions. A minute later Brom, Gerox and Barratore sit down. You have just enough time to share what you learned (no new information was gained from the most recent checks) when you hear the ancient horn blow again.

Moments before sundown, a tall man approaches from the southwest strolling across the lawn. Lord Edward Tremblay Cameron announces as a man dressed in a fashionable noble's hunting outfit approaches. He is fairly hansom, and though his boots are dirty everything else about him speaks of propriety. His body is tall, lean, and strong, and he has fair skin, dark hair, and clear blue eyes.

As darkness gathers Edward welcomes the group and gestures for those not seated to join him at the table. The night breezes are warm, and the glow of the torches provides a cozy atmosphere. Lord Kazil, I am so pleased that you accepted my invitation. Edward says as he gives a deep bow. It is quite an honor to have you at my table. I think you will find that this evening proves a memorable one. My servants have seen signs of large bear, wolves and wild bore in the area and the full moon always makes them more active at night. But enough of that. Please, have a seat and tell me of your adventures. I want to hear it from the horse's mouth, as they say, without the commoners getting all the details wrong.

As soon as everyone is seated, Edward signals for the servants to bring the drinks and the first course. The smell is bliss and you find all of the food and wine served of exceptionally high quality. You start with a small plate of Artichoke canapés topped with leviathan shrimp medallions carved into small roses and sprinkled with fennel followed by roasted tomato and red pepper soup with goat cheese and fresh basil and then a spring mix salad with an orange olive oil vinaigrette and dried cranberries.

As you talk the servants come around offering you your choice of red and white wine or a dark dwarven stout. Edward drinks the red wine (and the ever observant Peza notices servants sneaking glasses of all three as they carry silver platters from the table back into the mansion).

As the food is slowly devoured Edson playfully tells your host of the wolves destruction, all the while observing Lord Tremble's reaction. The man appears genuinely interested in your stories and as far as Kazil can tell the man's greatest motivation at the moment is ensuring the group eats and drinks their fill, a man interested in throwing a grand banquet that will live up to certain expectations.

Barratore was considering being cautious on the food and drink offered, however as the aromas hit his nostrils he soon finds himself with two empty tankards of Dwarven ale next to his full one as the tales of adventure he leaves to others, Brom follows his example, but Peza fills the void while accepting a glass of the red wine. Edward shows great interest in the statues, both from the prospective of a hunter and that of a collector.

When Gerox asks what enticed him to these far shores a sad look crosses his face. It is the curse of the first born. In families of our standing the first born inherits all of the land and the majority of the money in order to preserve the family legacy. I know it sounds nice, but it is the younger son that gets to travel the Wold seeking adventure. As the eldest I have to stay in one spot in order to receive business communications and limit my activities to those deemed acceptable for one of my standing. I used to explore ancient ruins, and now I am limited to trophy hunts on my grounds. Its boring. Then I heard about Rum and saw the potential it held, not just economically, but in the freedom it presented. Under the justification of setting up several investments on the island I was able to move to this untamed land for one last adventure and leave my holdings in New Elenna under the care of a trusted steward.

As if to illustrate the point, during the course of the conversation Edward is approached twice by two different men carrying papers for him to sign. Both times Edward looks annoyed and apologizes for the interruptions, explaining that as his family's representative in this area, he sometimes has to deal with family business at inopportune times. Each time he briefly scans the parchment before him before signing his name.

When the second man leaves Edward raises his right and and the servants once again come out carrying several more trays of steaming food. One by one they offer you your choice of roasted leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic served with roasted vegetables and Gorgonzola mashed potatoes or Beef medallions with morels, Marsala and crème fraiche served with smashed herbed potatoes and sautéed green beans. The decadent smell causes you to practically drool as your glasses are refilled.

Our Lord here has hired us to act as protection because he knows the members of the WLA are honorable and will stand with him as he explores this island. As Edward tells his story it brings about a surprising range of emotions from the group. A man who had everything yet was trapped and in many ways had nothing due to the burden of responsibility on honor, a difficulty many on the group had faced themselves at some point. Even so, the Lord Thief had a feeling the story was a combination of truth and misdirection. Hoping to draw out a little more information Gerox presses him for further details as others emphasize with his situation.

I have not done much as of yet, my home was only recently built and my belongings have only partially shipped and are not even fully unpacked as of yet. What drew me here was a matter of simple geography. After studying maps of the various trade routes I determined that this would be a prime location for intersecting trade routes to meet in order to restock supplies and trade wares. With the recent discovery of the Liviathan Shrimp it is even more assured that this will be the case. As such I am investing in a combination of ships, docks, warehouses, trading stalls and a ship wright. Although most of the prime land is already occupied, it is my hopes to buy some of the current merchants out. They will have more money than they could have hoped for while I will be in it for the long term investment. If that fails I will build on the edge of the city. If my predictions are correct the outer edge of the city will in the coming years become the new center...but enough of business and money, that is the very thing I am trying to forget. Tell me more of your adventures, such tales are better than that of business before a hunt.. You must have had some exciting tales settling this island or other adventures with the WLA.

Once again he raises his hand and servants come around to fill goblets with fine trays laden with lemon cream tarts, rich tiramisu, decadent chocolate mousse, bread pudding with whiskey sauce and a fresh backed dutch apple pie. All smell heavenly, the perfect way to finish off a fine meal.

After indulging in the final course, or in some cases multiple final courses, the servants begins collecting your plates as Edward stands and invites you into the mansion for one last drink by the fire to help your meals settle before the hunt. (Assuming there are no objections) he then leads the up the path.

A servant waits outside to open the doors for you, and Edward walks through the front door into what appears to be a sumptuously appointed living room. A great stone fireplace occupies most of this chamber's east wall. The fire has burned down low and is now little more than coals. Against the walls stand eight wooden chairs, and four large, decorative urns mark the corners of the chamber. Two sets of double doors open into the room--one on the north wall, and one on the south. Edward casually points out the sitting room and the dining room beyond, then makes a grand gesture encompassing the rest of the house. "Welcome to my humble home. Do make yourselves comfortable," Edward says easily, taking a seat by the fireplace. "I regret that I cannot show you the rest of the house at this time, but frankly, I have been so busy with the bussienss arrangements that I haven't had time to unpack all of my reference books and other belongings. Worse still, some of the trophies from my hunts are still waiting at the tanner's because I haven't had time to arrange delivery, let alone find places to hang them."

Offering everyone a glass or two of the finest whiskey he smiles and offers a proposal. Lets make things interesting. I am willing to wager 1,000 gold coins that I can bring down a deer or other subtitle trophy before anyone else in the group, provided that weapons and not magic are used for the kill.

Barratore accepts another drink and upon mention of the bet looks over at Edson and Peza. more so at Peza, because even though the rouse is that Edson is in charge, he is simply far more used to Peza taking lead and so more out of habit than anything else, he looks her way.

Barratore is no hunter, he is a warrior. Ranged combat, hand to hand or melee weapon and he feels he can challenge any other. Hunting is a different skill set. Perception, tracking and stalking are more important than aim. The fighter knows he will lose such a contest. Brom might fair better, but if Edward is truly an accomplished hunter, he likely would drop the animal before Brom and especially himself, even knew it was there. For all that though, if Peza wants him, he will accept the bet.

Strolling to the mansion .... Peza leads the group .... following Lord Tremblay ..... " yes the use of magic in hunting seems to defeat the purpose of the hunt ... the thrill is the challenge " agrees Peza

" I'll agree to that wager for myself .... each of us should accept or decline individually "

"But you know these grunds so well ... a few helpful hints should keep us on a level field " adds the ranger

Edson takes a seat in a nice cushioned chair that only wealth could provide. He doesn't know why, but he likes this Lord Edward, perhaps it is the whiskey he was given.

"I accept as well. If you haven't noticed yet, I have pointed ears. That is the first sign I am an elf. And we all know elves are the best with a bow."

Gerox frowns and says, "Alas, my skills with weapons is limited and my short stature also holds me back. My skills come from magic so I must decline your fine wager. Still, I will have fun as my comrades and Lord try to skin some of your gold off of you."

With that, he tosses back his head and slugs down a shot of the fine whiskey. Smacking his lips together, he belches softly and says, "Now that is a fine drink."

He wanders away for a moment and looks at Edson casting a message spell, "I think you should think about exploring the house a bit more closely when things quiet down. I can provide a invisibility spell if that is helpful. The comments about the house being unfinished seem a bit to convenient if you ask me.
We should confirm that."

While confident in his skill as a warrior, Barratore declines the bet knowing that such a hunt requires additional skills which he lacks, but Peza and Edson are quick to accept. And Peza asks for any hints he might have given that he is more familiar with the grounds. The animals are drawn to the paths in the woods. Carriages and horses tend to kill small rodents which attract scavengers, which in turn attract larger animals. Typically I follow the trail into the woods and keep my eyes peeled for tracks and my ears listening for things moving in the brush. The trick is to always be looking for signs of your quarry. As Edward talks Gerox sends a private message to Edson.

Suddenly the ancient horn blows again and Edward looks up, appearing to stare straight through Gerox. A grin crosses his face...I think there will be one more joining our little hunting party...I hope you don't mind, but I think you will get along quite well...you could say he has been dying to meet you... A moment later the door behind Gerox opes and a cloaked figure walks in, his face hidden beneath the cowls of his long robe. Allow me to introduce Anthe Wardson.

Anthe removed his cowl as he walked in, leaves falling at his feet as he did. The room filled with the faint smell of a forest during a heavy rain. He looked at each member of the gathered party, resting on each for a moment before moving on to the next.

He smiled slightly and nodded his head, "Hello, it is a pleasure to meet you all." His words poured from his mouth smoothly, almost as if he were humming.

At a quick glance you could tell that he is Human, but there seemed to be something off about him. Something that you can't quite put your finger on.

[Welcome Matt!]

The wager was a little too high stakes for Brom. That kind of money was more than he could afford. He passes on the wager.

Brom sees the new arrival. He looked average height and weight. Honestly not much seemed to impress the large six and a half foot man. He doesn't say anything but nods a greeting should Anthe look his direction.

Other than that, the Minotaur says nothing.

Edson moves forward to the newest member of the hunt. The skinny elf is dressed rather elegantly(all a ruse). His hair scented with oils, his skin cleaned from the ocean. Lord Edson looks as any Lord of the area should. His pointed ears pop through his hair, which is pulled back in a knot.

"A true pleasure to meet you, Anthe. I am Lord Edson, and these are my men and women."

Anthe takes a moment to access the group he can feel their watchful eyes reading him in turn. Edward had told him the rumors of the groups adventures and he was curious to see if they would live up to their reputation on the hunt, and what adventurous man does not like a good hunt with adventurers of such reputation?

As you make small talk and introductions Edward hands out drink, refilling them whenever a glass gets too empty. After the formalities are taken care of he summons Cameron and orders him to leash the dogs. They are quiet enough to not scare prey.[b] He explains as he takes a bow off the wall and slings it over his back, [b]but they are trained to signal us if the pick up a scent and will point us in the right direction if anything is hiding in the woods.

A couple minutes later Cameron informs him that the hounds are ready and Edward leads you back outside. As he takes the leashes in hand the dogs begin pulling, having clearly picked up a scent. Are you ready? he asks.

Gerox sighs at the others enthusiasm. He thinks to himself, "If we aren't the prey, I will be happy. He trots along with the others wondering how he is going to be useful on this trip.

He positions himself next to Barratore and says, "Keep your eyes open big guy. I know you can swat down a dragon without a thought or breaking a sweat but something is making the hairs on the back of my neck stick up."
