The Road from Edenmoor

Readying to Leave Edenmoor
Thursday June 5th, 2014 9:02:25 PM

Atlas detects no deception or anything but an offer on the up and up with the agent of the Mailed Fist. "Caravan is offering 200 gp to the Tree of Parting and another 200 if you go all the way to Emerald City. As far as cargo, better question is likely what's not cargo." he folds his hands in front of him on the table, "Look about you, everyone is going. You're new about, I get ya. See, every couple months a massive caravan is either going to or coming from Emerald City. There's gonna be near on 100 wagons likely and so as the official escort, us Mailed Fist or out proper to equip her with a right and proper guard. Can't have the giants, trolls, goblins and the like be thinking they just spotted a mobile feast."

Other stations about Edenmoor, within the hustle and bustle are similarly picking up folks to right as guard to the great caravan heading west.

Lilith spots several marks, and she also spots a great many individuals carrying an impressive array of armor and weapons in tight groups. Adventures, thrill seekers, treasure hunters and the like. Any mistake could get very costly in the direction her mind is churning. She also sees quite a few men and women wearing the flag of Edenmoor and without trying she can count a dozen from the famed Mailed Fist.

Adventure pulls at everyone, the promise of seeing one of the great natural wonders of the Wold, The Tree of Parting, seeing the Red Hills where giants and trolls roam. The there is the ancient Culverwood, said by some to be a sentient forest of great power and mystery. The offer from the Mailed Fist provides the perfect method of transportation with the caravan.

Word finally comes down that in the morning the caravan is departing. The Mailed Fist and many they have recruited to fill their ranks all find themselves at Edenmoor's premier Tavern, The Baying Hound. This great hall of a structure can seat nearly 150 and it is here where you find yourselves in the evening.

The party is all at The Baying Hound, if in character you would like to interact and get to know each other, please do so. It is assumed that all PC's are signed on with The Mailed Fist as auxillary guard.

Near the doors of the tavern, a gnome sits carving a nearly perfect ball from a beech knot.

A human child chases a dog, happily, the dog barks and seems to be making a game of the challenge, stopping every so often for the child to catch up then takes off again.

A dwarf ambles down the street, complaining to himself about some discrepancies in wages.

A sparrow sings from a tree. A greeting of sorts.

Even in a place as grand as The Baying Hound, Lilith was sure to keep her tail tucked underneath her to ensure no one trampled it. She found herself sitting with a mixed group, and she eyeballed them all carefully.

"So," she leaned in, resting her elbow on the table and her chin subsequently in her palm "Who wants to go first?" she eyed Atlas, her eyebrows raised "Why not you?"

With his back to the wall, Atlas takes in the scene before him. The mix of people crammed into this tavern is astounding, but what is even more interesting is the lack of blood. All this steel mixed with big egos and a constant source of mead, and yet I haven't seen one argument turn to fists or blade. Probably for the best, but a it sure lowers the entertainment factor for the evening.

Looking around the table Atlas observes an interesting mix of individuals, but the Liontaur seems to be the one that holds his attention. That would likely be because she's looking at him and starting to speak...

...Well, I guess I'll go first then. Maybe with the right words one of these folks will have my back when it matters.

Atlas leans forward, puts his forearms on the table, interlocks his thumbs and first few fingers and looks around at the group. "Sure, I'll play along. They call me Atlas and I'm from South Harbor. This will be my first time making the trip, so I'm open to pointers if anyone has them."

Atlas takes another look around at the group and sits back. He picks up his mug and takes a swig of his mead while waiting for the next stranger to introduce themselves.

Inside, I feel both pleasantly overwhelmed by so many new things to see, and also uncomfortable with the size of the crowd. Trying to quietly blend in, I listen as people make introductions. I prepare myself in advance to make a fairly generic introduction if requested, but completely fine if not noticed as well. When the chance presents itself, I meander on outside.

I eventually introduce myself to the gnome. "Hi, I'm Mack! What are you carving there? It's looks very interesting."

After a quick conversation with the gnome, hoping to learn a word or 2 in his language, I make my way over to the sparrow. Not being fluent in any avian languages, I do my best to communicate, trying to make a new friend. "Any good, safe places to sleep up there for the night?", I ask in whistle and chirping form.

Taelith sits in silence for a moment. Being slightly uncomfortable he fidgets in his chair for a moment and then speaks up

"Hello. I am Taelith Fenlandel. I have joined this caravan as a means of quenching my wanderlust. "

Taelith leans back again

Maybe I said too much. Do they really care why I am here?

"Lilith Parrim of Chessford, home of many fine merchants." She allowed a slight amount of sarcasm drip on the last words. "and no advice, as I am also a first timer. My reason...purely monetary."

She removes her arm from the table and stretches, glancing around the room. "I am astounded at how many people there are."

The gnome looks, with squinted eyes up at Mack, then back at the ball. "Sphere I 'spect." He says in plain and unbroken Common. Then he jesters a thumb and knife in the direction of the tavern door. "Th'r I 'spect." He says with a smirk.

Then noticing the dwarf in the road, the gnome jumps aptly to the ground and jogs to his friend. "Angus..." is all you hear as the turn off down the street.

Atlas's eyes follow the halfling as he walks out of the tavern, but they do not give away his opinion on the departure. As each of the patrons introduces themselves he nods and smiles. After the liontaur's comments everyone goes silent.

With an audible 'humph' and a look of frustration Atlas says, "My, what a joyful bunch." He sets his mug down again and leans in, looking each of them in the eye.

"Look here, we don't have to be friends on day one. However, we are about to make a journey into dangerous lands and there is a good chance that we'll see battle. If we all try to do this as individuals we're going to be slaughtered, as are the innocent people that we are being paid good money to protect. Now let's try this again. I'll start.

I am good with a sword and shield. You'll note my bow, but you can pretty much ignore that since I'm lucky if I can hit the broad side of a barn with it. When it comes to the battle field, indecision is death, so I make my decisions quick and dive in adjusting as I need to. You, elf, you look annoyed with the rest of us, but I'll be the one keeping the monsters back so you can put that twig of yours to good use. I feign to my left, so don't you dare shoot me when I come back to my right. Got it?"

As Atlas starts to talk about the potential battles to come his tone turns from frustration to business.

"And you, taur, what's your approach to this? Are you going to be by my side with that rapier you wear? If so, I suggest my left if we're fighting giants or any large beasts. I'll need room on my right to get a proper swing in. Otherwise, pick what ever works for the occasion.

I know, I talk too much, but better that than ending up in the bugbear's pot.

Now, for the rest of you mutes, what's your deal?"

Atlas doesn't pick up his mead or lean back this time. He's energized and it shows. He looks intently at the next person that speaks up...

A metallic clattering of clutter and cutlery is heard from the kitchen, as a young maiden of nineteen half backs out and half stumbles with a sheepish grin. A wayward tangle of frizzy, strawberry blonde curls bounce around haphazardly the more excited she gets.

"S-so sorry! Many apologies!" She cringes, but sounds too innocent (and most likely, too naive) to have meant any harm. "I thought that was my cauldron! Lynne, where have you gotten off to? He looks quite like Lynne, you see, stout of frame and dark of features. Potbellied old Lynne. Full of soup and such a sourpuss."

Her eyes are large and innocent, a mundane and muddy blue flecked with brown, like an armada of toy ships crossing a pond. There is a great deal about her that seems child-like -- despite her now growing more into a form that hardly seems suited for it -- and everything from her manner of dress to the way the witch presumably summons her sorcery (for clearly, what else could this one be) strikes you as someone who is Strange...due to them never having seen anything normal for comparison.

[ooc]I won't interact with the party yet because I'm not sure if I was approved last month or not. I seem to be having more troubles with Google Drive. This link is the same sheet I emailed everyone last time, but might not be working for you. I'll remake it fresh on a new sheet right now to see if that fixes the the error. Lilith nods, smirking as she does so.
"You feign left yet expect me to stand there, Human?" she stands, mainly as a display of just how large of a creature she is. "I would advise you to adjust around me! As for my rapier," she run her fingers along the weapon's casing "While it has seen a few battles, I would not consider myself the most handy. Now if you want a little extra gold or a trap disabled, I dare say I'm just the girl for that!"

She breaks into a full on grin. Already she liked the human, straight to business. Coming to Edenmoor had not been a mistake.

She does notice a chatter behind her, and what appears to be a fuzzy wemic kitten bouncing along amongst the shoulders (and heads!) of the others in the tavern, it was only as it drew closer did she recognize it as someone's hair.

Readying to Leave Edenmoor
Sunday June 8th, 2014 9:41:49 PM

Atlas, Lilith and Taelith all find themselves at the same table within The Baying Hound. All have a similar story of this being their first adventure, their chance to begin their own lives. A few others at the large table are of the same cloth too. Looking forward to tomorrow and all the possibilities that it will bring. A clamor from the kitchen draws the attention of several of the tables nearest the disturbance. A young maiden of nineteen half backs out and half stumbles with a sheepish grin. A wayward tangle of frizzy, strawberry blonde curls bounce around haphazardly the more excited she gets. The woman is apologizing a roar of lion coming from the kitchen is her reply. The head chef, a liontaur, now quite put out about whatever precisely transpired in the kitchen Several low whispers indicating the foolish girl is still lucky to have her head bounce about the other tables. The comments are in jest, but with a small amount apprehension to bely the temparment of the chef.

As Kesabrey backs from the kitchen and a very upset liontaur, she spies a nearby table with an opening, across from another liontaur who is currently talking to an elf and a human.

Dinner has been server with a single glass of mead, compliments of the Mailed Fist. Shortly after all tables have food upon them, a man stands banging a dagger against a metal tankard.
Bung! Bung! Bung! Bung! Bung!

"Your attention please everyone. I know better than to insult many by naming you ladies and or gentlemen, but your attention please"
chuckles, and smiles ripple through the crowd and the tall human speaks. His hair is long and pulled back into a ponytail and scattered with white, marking him in his mid to late forties. His physique is still strong, his posture ramrod straight, with pulled back shoulders and his eyes carry wisdom and well won experience within them. "Many of you know me, but as many more do not, allow me to introduce myself. I am Garret Von Klempt, captain in The Mailed Fist and the caravan commander of the morrows excursion. This will be one of the larger trains moving west this year and so we are making an early start of it. Everyone is to be staged and prepared to as escort at 5 bells. Do not be late Flannagan"
A table across the room explodes into laughter and a voice calls back, "It was just the one time, never shall I live it down?"
Von Klempt fires back "Still surprised she stuck around to marry you.!"
More laughter.

Garret grows serious again, "5 Bells. Be ready at 5 bells, do not show up at five bells. We meet at the West gate. Enjoy your dinner and I will see you all in the morning."
Garret sits back down and the crowd inside The Baying Hound erupts into a series of 3 stout cheers of Huzzah.

Kess heads to the empty seat as the room errupts into the cheers. She smiles widely to the assembled, apparently never having seen such exotic peoples before recently, but instantly seems even more obsessed wtih the free mead. She does not drink this, but seemingly does everything else you can possibly imagine to it: odd tests and strange measurements and made-up math on slender fingers. At the end of it all, she only pours enough to fill up one of her empty potion vials, and unceremoniously slides the tankard over to the liontaur without ever taking a drink.

"Hello! Salutations! Please do not eat me!" She does not seem quite so nervous as perhaps...(in)factual...though she does seem to believe in her statement's validity. "I would hate to be food ever so much. I have never seen a great many things just yet. I haven't seen the inside of a stomach either, which might be quite splendid, but I suppose there's not much else to see after that. I know! I shall endeavor to make that the _last_ thing on my list. Of course! Is that agreeable, Miss Liontaur? That we shall save the eating for last? I fear I would be a terrible healer if I could not see my patients. Well, unless you ate something that disagreed with you. I do enjoy conversations. Have you seen Lynne?"

Kess looks into her eyes with an inquisitive gaze, apparently assuming that you must know who she is talking about, without any sense of pretense. Blue brown eyes are soon distracted by the other two patrons as she turns.

"Oh my, an elf!" she exclaims in almost perfect elven, though it does carry the strain of someone who is pronouncing some words phonetically, as if she has learned it from books. "Are you an elf? Or are you a human with pointier ears? Are you an elf with rounder ears?" She is still speaking elven as she turns to the human. "I can heal both of your broken ears, you know. I'm your healer. That's why I'm here tonight!"

She muses at something, pouting in a manner she really shouldn't have cause to do any longer. Unless this is all some elaborate act, this girl clearly has no idea how old she really is, or how much her form is filling out these days. She chews her lip and returns to common. "Um, well to be fair, I don't know many healing spells yet. Hardly any, really. I'm not sure these Mailed Fist postmen are the most competent to hire someone with my lack of skills. So try not to get hit, okay? Why do letter carriers get attacked so often, do you think? To clench correspondence in a fist so? Curious."

Before Atlas can respond someone starts banging their tankard and asking for attention. He smirks and nods towards Lilith before turning towards the man that is speaking. He puts his full attention towards the man, blocking out the distraction caused by a girl as she makes her way through the crowd...

...Atlas joins in the cheer, finishes off his mead, and returns his attention to the table just as the walking distraction plops herself down. With a quick glance he notes that no one is chasing her and that the yelling from the kitchen seems to have died down. However, once again his attempt to speak is put to a halt as the girl starts spouting in common and what sounds like elvish...

...As the she takes a breath Atlas jumps in. "My, there is energy about you isn't there! If you will allow me to interupt, my name is Atlas, this hear is Lilith and that's Taelith. Did I hear you mention healing spells? I would love to hear more about that. And don't fret about what you don't know. Even the smallest of healing spells would be a welcome addition to our little group here. What can we do to convince you to join us as we march tomorrow? Oh, and I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name?"

Atlas flashes a friendly smile towards the girl and then gives a look of encouragement to Lilith and Taelith in hopes that they'll help win her over.

While exploring outside, I hear what sounds like some announcements going on back inside the building. I make my way back indoors, while trying not to be rude breaking off my conversation with the sparrow. I chirp and whistle my apologies that I must cut this short, and head back indoors.

I take a look around to see if there is anything extra-interesting to see since I left, and work my way back towards the table I was initially at. It seems a little fuller now then before, but still a few empty places to sit.

Why does Atlas think that I am annoyed? Did I say something wrong or was it my expression? Maybe my attempts at being courteous have been lost on this group. I'll try harder this time

Taelith with the largest smile he can muster responds to group "Your elvish is quite good. Yes I am Elven. As my new acquaintance Atals said, I am Taelith. Taelith Fenlandel. I am a marksmen, a pretty good one. I hope that doesn't come off as bragging or anything like that."

Taelith stops for a moment as if thinking then blurts out suddenly "Who is Lynne?"

The maiden jumps up, hands on her hips and chin jutted out in the most heroic way she can manage. "My name is Kesabrey Peldimure Jesk! But my friends call me Kess or K.J." As she tries to sit back down she realizes that many of the things tied and dangling to the outside of her backpack are impeding the process.

"Lynne is -- Wait, Lynne! There you are!" The witch reaches around and clunks a cast iron cauldron onto the tabletop. It strikes you as being remarkably unremarkable. "Don't run off like that! How am I ever to cook my potions with you galavanting all about? Were you trying to woo that tea pot again? This is no time for romance, we've a job to do!"

"And this, my esteemed lords and ladies, is Sir Duncan the Pale." With great flourish she retrieves a dented metal bucket, having long since lost its luster, and places him atop the table with several bows. "This brave knight was once enchanted by dark sorcery to the form you see before you. His is a steadfast companion, who was too noble to ask for any payment for this mission. He rarely asks for anything as he can no longer speak. He is quite content to carry my burdens, though. And be worn like a helmet. I'm not sure how much he likes that part, though, what with all the getting hit and all."

She looks between her two containers with great interest. "These are my friends! I told you they call me Kess. Wait, what? Bess? What do you mean you've been calling me Bess this whole time? Lynne! I have half a mind...!"

While the sentence is left hanging, you suspect it might well be finished after all.

She smiles back at the group. "Small healing is good indeed! I can heal small things. Oh, ooh! Or I could make you smaller to begin with! That would make the small healing seem even bigger, no? Yes? Yes!" She seems quite pleased with this sudden theory.

"I like this one! Kess, you said your name was? I do hope you stay near, little human. No no - not so I can eat you of course not - but you amuse me so already!" she attempts to subdue the chortling that lingered in her voice as she turns her attention to the stranger "And you, be gone, as I wish to hear more of the tales of Lynne and Sir Duncan!"

Mack directs himself back inside and locates a space to occupy just a few spots from Taelith. The halfling hops up and finds a plate of hot food with a side dish of spiced apples.
Kesa introduces herself and the a small group is beginning to form. One that perhaps could watch each others back or at least have each others back in the great caravan that will be on the road in the morning.

The toothless woman waves off Lilith and gives her a hearty 'Bah' and is gone

The evening progresses and becomes night and The Baying Hound begins to empty out.

5 Bells comes quickly, the sun has not lit the horizon yet, but the west gate area is crowded with activity.

[ooc]Many apologies, you beat me to the punch! I type too slow. Here's a bit and a bob:[/ooc]

"Technically speaking" - the seeming dullard, if never dull girl, informs the passerby - "nuts can bloom. Or at least grow. It depends on how poetical you're being. Oh don't mind her, Lynne. No cause to be scared: we've many square jawed, barrel chested friends to help us in a pinch." You get the immediate impression that she might be referring to literal barrels and chests. At this point, you'd put nothing past her.

In her youth the witch watched her mentor cauldron-cook in fascination. One day, when Kess thought she heard the old woman refer to her own cauldron as "Lynne," the wry hag joked that it was short for Bubblin' and called her Lynne forever more, perhaps to humor or entertain the girl. Kess was never fully satisfied with that answer, however: she was positive that it was supposed to stand for Boilin', and that made the matter as plain as the nose on her face: "Boy Lynne" means it's a boy, not a girl! Years later, when Kess was ready for a cauldron of her own, she made sure to name it Lynne as well...but in the right way this time.

Trying to discern a male spirit from the Realm of Shadows to bind as her familiar was no easy task. She thought the more violent ones would likely be male, but she had never been good with the sight of blood, so when the night--

"Oh! Pretty!" She seems to lose track of whatever thought she was juggling. "That's a splendid sword!" She leans in close to inspect the length of the rapier. "My word, you all have weapons! I wonder if a sword might make a good ingredient for my pot? Perhaps it might make a wit keen, or a cheese sharp. Possibilities, possibilities. Humorously numerous...or is it numerously humorous? I suppose as long as they're not tumorous. I am your healer."

The lass suddenly sees the halfing move through the crowd. In a crisp and brisk Gnomish she asks, "Are your ears broken too? Because I could fix that."

As I'm enjoying the spiced apples, I notice Kess seeming to address me in a concerned fashion, but I can't make out what she's saying. I clean out my ears with my pinkie finger, and reply "I'm sorry... what was that?" in Common?

The next morning, I try to find a quiet place to sit off to the side of the gathering and meditate/relax while I take it all in. I enjoy the fresh morning air, and try to get a good feel for the rest of the group to see who is bright and chipper in the morning, and who isn't.

As I slightly adjust my pack to make my banjo a little more comfortable, I look at the nearby squirrel watching me, "I think I'm going to need to pick up a harmonica somewhere."

With that Taelith looks around to see if he finds any from his table the night before.

Atlas strolls into the West Gate area and looks around for a familiar face. The first person he sees is that strange halfling from the other night. Between him and...what's her name...Kess, between him and Kess this sure is turning out to be different than I thought. Well, I'm sure there's a lesson to be had here, I just need to watch for it.

On that thought Atlas walks over to the halfling and introduces himself. "Hey there, my name is Atlas, you were at our table a few times last night." Atlas pauses to see if there is any recognition in the halfling's face. It is hard to tell, so he continues, "I didn't realize that you play the banjo. Would you mind playing a few songs for us once we get moving?"

As Atlas asks the question he takes a look around and sees a few of the others from their group last night. There they are! Before the halfling can answer he raises his left hand to his mouth and lets out a high pitch whistle. When they see him he waves them over. Then he looks back at the halfling and says, "do you know Drunken Sailor? That's one of my favorites." He gives the halfling a big grin as he thinks about that song.

Each individual arrives at the West gate and looks about for those they saw and briefly met the night before. Others can be seen doing likewise and all falling into little cliches and groups. Atlas, Mack, Taelith and Lilith see one another first and greet each other in the darkness of the early morning. Or perhaps the very ate night as the sun has not shone itself yet.

Garret walks through the crowd nodding and greeting the assembled guard of the caravan. He carries a steaming metal mug of something that your nose cannot quite place. "All right, all right, all right. Looking good people looking good. OK the merchants, homesteaders, travelers and Warrd only knows what and who else will be gathering in about 30 minutes as the sun comes up. You can group up as you see fit and stagger yourselves about the caravan. I'll rearrange you if I think it necessary. Those who are mounted, gear up and move outside the gate and picket up there. I'll be with you and will be shuffling you down the ranks of our charge. The rest of you hold tight.
Garret then swings up onto a tan stallion and moves the horse out the west gate.

The merchants and others making up the caravan are hardly as punctual as Garret. It takes well into the mid morning before the caravan departs through the west gate. Sheep, goats, cattle and livestock of all kinds accompany the caravan. Wagons great and small pulled by oxen, horses and mule. The exodus of Edenmoor is truly a grand sight and a lengthy one.

Finally, though, it is done and underway. The next stop of true safety lies at The Tree of Parting over 150 miles and 10 days away.

Kess looked down at her mismatched socks. She kept musing over a theory that the road would have been softer if she'd worn them on the outside of her shoes, and inwardly cursed herself for not trying it, but there was nothing for it now. The caravan moved at a surprisingly good clip, considering how many people and livestock counted among their number.

Every once in awhile, others catch glimpses of her suddenly becoming entranced with some mundane or meaningless object by the roadside. A pebble here, a splinter there. She wasted a good five minutes trying to secure a _footprint_ of some sort of barefooted humanoid; all you could see her end up with was a vial full of dirt, but she seems quite pleased with her painstaking work on it, smiling at the glass in satisfaction.

"I made this, you know. Not the footprint. At least, I don't think so. I don't remember being that small in awhile. Or one footed. At least, not at the same time. But the glass, that I did make. It turns out the craft becomes rather necessary for the Craft when you don't live in a city." She sighs, trying to adjust her pack straps. "Though I suppose my tools will do me little good over the next leg of our journey. I've collected a foot, we're on a leg: clearly we're working are way up. How auspicious!"

Kess blinks at Atlas and Mack. "You both know a drunken sailor? And you enjoy his company?"

"And what is this of drunken sailors? They're at least easy to pick pocket, that much I know as fact" another fierce yawn "But I wouldn't recommend sticking around for when they sober up"

"<b>Hey Atlas! A pleasure to meet you. I'm not really all that great at playing, but I do enjoy it and find it relaxing. I'm not sure I know that song, but I'll definitely play a few tunes to try to quicken our travels.</b>" As the rest of the group makes its way over, I wish each a good morning, and introduce myself to those that I have not already done so. I am a little saddened that I don't see the sparrow anywhere in sight. I was pretty sure I had talked him into joining us. As a minotaur walks over to join us, I'm feeling more and more like the sparrow would have been a perfect addition to round out our little group.

Once we're out the gates and well on our way, I pull out the banjo and try to play something nice for the group, and relaxing for the animals (performing check of 17 (d20 roll of 11 with +6 modifier)).

OOC: I'm guessing I don't really need to do a roll for that, but thought I'd try it to make sure I'm doing it correctly.... and just to make sure I don't play so poorly that the animals stampede and trample me. :)

"Bonivus, didn't we meet the other day at the recruiter's table? My apologies, I never did introduce myself properly. I am Atlas Sunowl, from South Harbor. It is good to see you again. And to answer your question, no, we are not traveling by ship on this journey that I am aware. We're just having a conversation about one of my favorite songs called Drunken Sailor. It seems that this group has never heard it before. Please tell me you have, because I'm NOT going to sing it by myself." Atlas looks up at Bonivus, his smile is still there, but there's also a look of hope on his face. Similar to the look he had as a kid when they walked past the baker's shop and all the sweets were out on display.

When Kess hears that it is a song she begins to nod sagely, her hair bouncing around like coiled fire. She is unsure if the halfling is playing the same one, but she begins clapping her hands and singing somewhat inaudible words under her breath. What first sounds like singing made-up lyrics really turns out to be her casting a spell.

[i][Spell, Lv 0: Prestidigitation][i]

She begins to tap a stone laddle against her cauldron, using it as a drum. As she's no talent for music she stops herself at a slow though constant beat. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Two more laddles, wooden and ivory, float up from her pack and begin clacking together above her head. Tap. Clack. Tap. Clack.

"Good morrow, Mister Minotaur. I fear you cannot eat me, as I've promised that meal to Miss Liontaur. She's waved me off so far, but I am very sweet, and like any dessert she might well change her mind before the check comes."

She continues her simple percussion beat, unsure of what the halfing has in store.

Exiting Edenmoor Dan K
Thursday June 12th, 2014 12:37:29 AM

The caravan proceeds down the west road, though to name it such is quite generous. Within 10 miles of Edenmoor, it could be classified as such. The people of Edenmoor maintain the laid rock and cleared ground leading to their small town, as well as send patrols often enough to deter man and beast from venturing any closer. Beyond this, and for the rest of the 140 miles, the road is nothing more than a 20' earth trodden path. Years of travel and thousands of travelers by foot, wagon and beast have made it so. But is it not paved, nor cared for and most of, it is not protected from man, beast or elements.

Garret rides up and down the length of the great caravan fairly often at first, picking out members of the Mailed Fist and others who have temporarily signed on, such as yourselves. Relocating them as he deems fit up and down the column.

The party ends up on the northern side, somewhere in the middle of the 70 or so wagons. that is where you meet Mr. Highfoot, a Halfling scholar with intentions to study the social interactions of those who call The Tree of Parting home. Most others are moving goods and will continue onward to the west and eventually The Emerald City within Culverwood.

"Keep a weathered eye to our north boys. Those are the Red Hills you can see just over the horizon there" Garret Von Klempt instructs as he positions you. To the north indeed you can see the land rise into a cloudy haze. Stretching the breadth of the northern horizon, stand the Red Hills. The home of Trolls, giants and goblins so numerous they pale the count of mosquitoes in a swamp. As Garret passes he slows a bit to seemingly linger within hearing range of Mack's playing and those of sharp eye, catch a smile on the face of the Captain of the Mailed Fist

The first day ends and the the caravan essentially stops upon the road where it sits. Fires are struck and guard rotations deployed. Garret rides down the column and grants the groups he has seemingly created to set their own watches.

Kess merely clamps her hat down over her ears. "I shall take the last watch, if no one minds. I'm quite used to foraging for ingredients that only like to appear at dawn's breaking. Some are shy, you see. Oh! And I could simply bang upon Lynne even harder, to wake you all up tomorrow!" The cauldron does not appear to give any sort of response; perhaps he is the strong and silent type of inanimate object.

As the travelers make camp the witch walks between you, talking to herself and tracing strange patterns on their left elbows. "Just a little something to help keep you comfortable through the night."

Bold [][] b inside brackets, and close with /b
Italic [][] i inside brackets, and close with /i
Spoiler [][] the word 'spoiler' inside, and close with /spoiler (for note passing)

These are the most used brackets. There are one or two more, I think, but these are the ones I use all the time.

Atlas is still squaring by the fire using a stick to poke at it every now and again to make sure it stays burning. Eventually he stands up and and announces, "Fire is ready. Kess, do you need a tripod for your cauldron?"

Not sure if Kess heard him or not, Atlas decides not to ask again. She'll answer in her own time if she wants. He looks around and sees another halfling approaching the group. After introductions all around, Atlas says, "Mr. Highfoot, will you join us for our meal? I am interested to learn more about the Tree of Parting. Who lives there? Why do they build in the tree rather than the ground? It all sounds rather odd, yet interesting."

Before the evening ends Atlas speaks up regarding the watch, "I will take the second to last then. I too have some morning routines, so that works well for me." Atlas eventually pulls out his bedroll and prepares to rest, his weapons and gear by his side just in case.

A Night by the Fire Dan K
Friday June 13th, 2014 9:31:29 AM

The group sets a watch and strikes up a fire. Similar activity is going on up and down the length of the caravan. Fires spring up on the north and south side by each of the 70 wagons. Music can be heard on the wind, along with the braying of sheeps and goats and murmurs of conversation as everyone settles in for the evening. Food is distributed from several wagons to all in the caravan. Fresh fruit of melon and pears, hard bread, carrots, cheese and roasting chickens are distributed to all groups to cook and eat over the fires.

The lone travellers gather near the wagons they were close to and introduce themselves. Mr Highfoot is one such individual. He appears as most halflings do to bigger folk. He's dressed for the road, carries no visible weapons nor wears armor and has a well cared for leather satchel over one shoulder and an unlit long pipe in his mouth.

As he sits down, he agrees to Atlas' request. "The Tree of Parting is a wondrous place. simply fantastic, or at least that is what I have been lead to believe. Never been thee myself, but read up on it. I've exchanged messages and missives about it with colleagues." he pauses to take a bite of a pear after stowing his pipe. "Who lives there is a difficult question for me, as I did not look into it beyond arranging my stay. I exchanged messages with Ciyradyl, who runs the Inn where I will make my temporary home while working. I have heard that the tree is a place where many come to study and research and so the population and who you might meet is always in a state of flux." He breaks into ta chuckle and grin, "Which is precisely why I am going there as that is what I am studying. The Anthropology of the Tree itself." He takes another bite of his pear. "Now as to why build in a tree and not on the ground? I am pretty sure that answer lies in the dangerous wilds that surround it. Izen and the badlands to the west and south and the Red Hills to the north. Nasties a plenty friends. Ciyradyl assures me the Tree is quite safe though. I did not go into details with her." Mr Highfoot falls silent, finishing his meal and tossing some chicken to the edge of the fire light where a large dog has wandered up and scarfs the food down. The halflling pats the ground beside him, and the hound moves to him and lays down. He pets the dog and then makes himself comfortable, using it as a pillow.

Mack strikes up a tune and the night passes.

Day breaks, a quick breakfast is had and the caravan is underway once again.

The Red Hills are still present to the north and into the afternoon an pillar of smoke can be seen far into the distance within them.

To the south, Izen and the Badlands. The ground is broken and strewn with rocks and crags. Small gullies and vales can easily hide raiders and monsters such as ogres, trolls, orcs and goblins and you can see why this open road with slow moving caravans could make for easy targets.

The tripod Atlas offers is a welcome surprise, though he might be in for one of his own. Over the span of ten minutes, her cauldron grows from the size of a tea kettle to something large enough for several to ride within! It is far easier to see the detailing now. While far from exquisite craftsmanship, the non-being known as "Lynne" is adorned with some simple, humanizing decorations. It appears that the opening is meant to be a mouth. Needless to say, Kess needs a stout tripod indeed! "I'm only able to lift light or small things," she mentions without any trace of regret. "He's a bit too big even when he's dieting."

I fear I'll never get this. What do you think, Lynne?" To your surprise or amusement, a belch is heard; Kess gets a sour look on her face. "Manners, manners! At least close that gaping maw of yours." Instead he shifts his pack so he can use it as a pillow and stretches out on his bedroll to get some precious sleep before his shift begins. His final thoughts before falling asleep are about a comment from Lilith earlier in the day, Who knew that she was a thief? And how can she pick pockets at that size? The Road Dan K
Monday June 16th, 2014 9:32:22 PM

And so the days pass, The Red Hills to the north and the broken lands of Izen to the south. Mack tries to get to know those travelling in the immediate few wagons, in front and behind. The merchants are all talkative enough and all plan to continue past The Tree of Parting with the exception of Mr. Highfoot. The Halfling, who is riding the large hound seen a few nights ago chuckles at Mack's remark on attack.
"No need to worry about that I would say. This train is too large for anything but a dragon and if that happens you won't need to fret for long. Single or a pair of wagons, now that is good and dangerous in these parts."

Other merchants agree, it is why such trains or covetted, and apparently not all comers are allowed. "Lots are drawn and depending on business and cargo, you get more lots in the drawing." Is how Thornberg, a human textile merchant explains it. "Many of us therefore, team up to improve our cargo value."

The party, for their part, begin to get to know each other better as well. Another thing that the merchants near you seem to like. You are told that such cooperation and friendliness from the last minute hires by the Mailed Fist is not expected.

"Past trips, they've caused as much issue as they stopped." offers up a human with elven ancestry by the name of Wyldling.
"Garret's a good man, but not overly inquisitive when he hires on for these things." the silversmith finishes with a mild chuckle.

On the 8th day, about an hour after getting underway, Garret rides to the group, pulling his horse hard to a stop. "You 6 with me." and he begins leading you back the way he came. In short order you now stand off to the side of the road as the rest of the train passes. Two dwarfs and a human boy of perhaps 12 are with you and their broken down wagon. The Dwarfs, a pair of grey bearded merchants by the name of Dubrin and Korbiss, have been discussing at length and great graphic detail just why they are in their current situation ever since you arrived within earshot. It seems unlikely they will conclude to eithers satisfaction anytime soon as from what you can tell, the conversation is citing instances from their childhood. The human boy, whom you've only heard referred to as 'boy' thus far, is under the wagon with some carpentry tools. One rear wheel is completely off and looks to be quite damaged.

Von Klempt provides instructions, ignoring the dwarfs. "Stay with the wagon and see her safely to the Tree." With that, he turns his horse and takes a couple strides to Korbiss and Dubrin. The two men stop their arguing and look over from their seat on the wagon and give Von Klempt their undivided attention.
"I picked out a cross section of arms for you." Von Klempt indicates you with a nod
"That's a generous selection Captain, Thank you." Replies Korbiss
A final nod from the captain and he wheels his horse to gallop back towards the front of the train.

Korbiss and Dubrin resume their conversation, also known as as arguementative insult-fest.

Kesabrey attempts to pick up the broken wheel, falling off balance and landing her backside within the cauldron. A humorous spectacle, though you don't remember Lynne being quite large enough or quite close enough a moment ago. Her blue-brown eyes open wide as she glances down at the rounded, stylized teeth of the lip. "You're getting a little too familiar, Familiar. Make yourself useful and help me witch up this broke down wood work." After a few moments of effort she finally manages to climb out, covering it back up with the wheel as if it were a lid. This clattering actually appears to splinter the wheel even more in the process. "Never fret!"

"If this wheel you'll lend,
we'll set it to mend.
No coins shall you spend,
yet lest we offend:
perhaps a small stipend,
for broth, stock and ends."

"No not odds and ends, you oven of coven. I meant the end to the rhyme. Well we needed one, didn't we?! If I need starts or upstarts, I know who to ask."

The witch pauses in her strange circular arm motions to look up at Bonivus. Then her gaze flicks between him and Lilith. She appears about to say something several times, but always stops herself. There is a slight pause.

Her left hand points rightward to him: "How tall are you?" Her right hand stumbles through the reverse, to her: "How long are you?" Both hands switch who they're pointing at: "How strong are you?"

Atlas takes a moment to observe, then jumps in head first..."Kess, nice job fixing those parts! You're so full of surprises, this particular talent seeming to be one of the more useful on a trip like this. By the way, how are those healing potions coming? Atlas tries to make light of the situation to keep everyone's spirits up. No sense getting worked up over what could happen if we take too long, lets just get it done.

"You're going to need some help putting it all back together though. Bonivus and I should be able to help with the heavy lifting. Mack, would you mind finding a good spot to keep an eye out for trouble?" Isn't there a rule about halflings and trouble? On second thought... [b]"Mack, I repeat, keep an eye out for trouble. That means watch to make sure no trouble is coming. It does not mean to create trouble so that you can watch it. Just...just...don't hurt us, got it? Dang halflings are so unpredictable! "Also, see if you can figure out how much longer before the end of the caravan passes us by, and likely our lives if we cannot get this thing going before then. OK, a little worked up doesn't hurt if it means they hurry

There's only so many people that can work on the wagon at one time, so as Atlas starts forward he considers the others. "Lilith dear, would you be so kind as to politely shut those two up? Charm or claws, your call. All their bickering is going to ruin this beautiful day. And Taelith, another hand over here wouldn't hurt. Bonivus and I will lift if you can make the finer adjustments for us."

The group forms up about the broken down wagon and Kesa is quick to lend a rhyming hand. The Mending spells help, but the Witch notices that some pieces of the wheel are completely missing. Though her assistance has taken several hours off of the needed repairs to it. The axle is another matter where the wheel fits to the wagon. A replacement needs to be crafted. The boy is currently doing just that.

Atlas tells the Mack to keep a sharp eye out and then he and Bonivus move to assist with the wagon. At this moment though, there is no need as the wheel still requires a few spokes to be installed and the axle needs to be crafted.

Dubrin and Korbiss stop insulting each other with a waving hand and thorough dwarf Bah! You daft gnome! in unison at each other. This instigates a chuckle and the merchants turn in the groups direction as if they just noticed you.

"It'll take Boy at least a day, likely more to craft out a new axle, joint and hitch. Nice work on the wheel lass." Korbiss comments to the group and then specifically to Kesa.
"Like it or not, we are here for the night and will be on our own to the Tree tomorrow." adds Durbin

Mack looks for but cannot spy any trees. The Tree of Parting is still nearly 50 miles away.

The sun makes tracks across the sky and soon enough evening is upon you. Boy is still working, the wheels are complete, minus some of the metal surround and he is working diligently on the axle joint

Well, if it's tomorrow then so be it. However, if the monsters of this realm are anything like the bandits back home then they're licking their chops right now. It's time to earn our pay."

Turning to the dwarfs he asks, "I know you're merchants, but as dwarfs I assume you know your way with a weapon? Also, while it's a long shot, anything in your cargo that will help us if we're attacked?

Atlas looks around at the openness and cringes. He mumbles under his breath We're sitting ducks out here, then takes a breath and turns to figuring out how to stay alive. "Well, what do you all think? Backs to the wagon if they come, with the witch, bowman and boy in the wagon? We don't want to be split up or surrounded."

ooc: No worries on the healing potion Megan! Atlas is still going to keep bothering Kesabrey though. Atlas asks the the two dwarfs on their combat prowess and both of them shake their heads. "Sorry to disappoint you on the dwarven race, but not all of us know are way about a battle. " Korbiss says.
Durbin goes into the back of the wagon and calls out from there, "Only thing we got that passes as a weapon is a pair of hand axes for splitting wood. " He emerges with them and hands one to Korbiss, "Better than a fist though. Neither dwarf has any type of armor.

Mack moves to the boy and asks him about how pieces might be missing and the rest of the caravan. The boy blinks at Mack once or twice and shrugs
"Happens, wagon was shifting funny, for the last day or two, Probs lost a spoke or two and ground out some of the axle and today she just up and quit. Pieces ain't missing so much as ground into sawdust." As to the rest of the caravan, It has moved on already, doing so right after Garret moved the group to the here

Lilith, who had followed Mack asks about his craft and too that he also shrugs, "Picked it up here and there travelling with the caravans from Emerald City to the Plat. Only thing i member is on these roads in wagons. don't you worry now, I'll have us going by midday tomorrow sure like"

Atlas asks about where and how to set up the night shift and about what he feels is the inevitable attack. Bonivus, Lilth, Mack, Kesa and Taelith have little to add and so Backs to the wagon with the witch, bowman and boy in the wagon and the dwarfs in the wagon as well is what it will be if need be.

Let's get some fires going about 10 paces out, two on each side. Mack, could you and the boy gather all the wood you can find that's not needed for the wagon? Those on watch will keep the fires going."

Atlas takes a deep breath. Do I really talk this much, or is this group just quiet? Maybe they're not used to this sort of thing, it can be stressful. I wish I wasn't so accustomed.

Atlas's suggestion seems sound. I start gathering what I can for a fire. I can double up in whatever shift is convenient. With an attack seeming likely I'm trying to see if there is anything we can put out to give us a little advance warning as to watch direction they are coming from.... Sticks that will snap, any twine or rope with bells or anything else that might make some noise.

Ooc: having some trouble checking my char from campground. I don't have any noisemakers myself, but do have the rope. Atlas puts together a plan and the everyone gets to work. Wood is hard to come by other than what the wagon has. The busted axle, couple wheels and a scattering of hickory. A few small trees can be taken that are relatively close by. What the group does not really have is anyone who really knows how to start a fire. [no one is trained in survival] Lilith has a set of torches , though and so the issue is overcome as she uses one to start up the 4 stacks of wood. For the most part, the wood smolders and pours smoke.

At some point during the day, Kesa wandered off to look for some herbs or flowers or some such thing, and never returned. (Sorry guys Megan emailed me she was dropping out as the Wold was not a good fit for her after all. I hope she changes her mind, but for now we have to consider her out)

Korbiss volunteers to stand watch with Lilith and as Atlas and Durbin are first watch, that puts Korbiss and Lilith on second. Bonivus and Mack take the 3rd.

Late into the first watch, the others have all drifted to a light sleep that something approaches from the east. By this time the fires are producing some light, but not much. The light is more akin to torches than a good camp or signal fire.

Durbin pokes Atlas, "Human on the eastern road. 50' right in the center. I can't tell if he's got a weapon out or not"

Part 1

"This is not so bad" I whisper to my self as I enter in to Edenmoor. Think in my head how I hate crowds. " I just hope I am not too late." Looking around I don't see many people and seem to be all going about daily tasks. "This is strange, I though there would more people around especially with the caravan leaving today"

I politely stop the nearest person and quietly ask where the caravan is. Was told is had already left yesterday.

"Oh no missed it not a good start!"

So using my skills my grandfather taught me(tracking), I started out after it, hopping it didn't have too much of lead. With something this big, picking up the trail was not hard and easy to follow and with me traveling alone I should be able to catch up in no time.

After a fairly easy day of travel at a good pace the tracks seem to be getting fresher and fresher. Thinking to myself the signs show I should catch up tomorrow, but to say about being late. Maybe if I just blend in at the back they will not notice I was no there or just tell I had to say one last good bye to grandfather. Well I will deal with that when I catch them. As day turns to night and then late night I see in the distance smoke. "What is that trouble " I need to carful so I draw my great axe and ready for anything as I slowly approach the poorly made fires. Noticing a figure or two (perception roll to determine friend/foe danger?)....

Ooc: not sure if this is right but next action will be based on if I feel friend/foe/danger or even their action.

Durbin wakes the others and does so in a relatively quiet way. Atlas though is sure the sound of the others waking and grabbing for gear by their packs was easily heard across the short distance. there simply was almost no other real ambient noise out here to help mask them.

Mack keeps his eyes peeled in every other direction looking for some that might be trying to sneak up upon them. It is his ears that come in handy this night though. A few dog like yips reach his ears from the north and the Red Hills. Something ar likely, multiple somethings are approaching from the north

The party forms up on the north side of the wagon, directed by Atlas. Durbin and Korbiss climb into the wagon and try their best to get behind the guard rails. Durbin gives an "Aye" to Atlas and both dwarfs are peeking to the north. Boy scrambles under the wagon and brandishes the knife he has been using to work on the axle and ball joint.

Bonivus is awake, grumpy and ready for action on the north side

The stranger on the road runs over and a quick introduction "Hi I'm Crosseye." is made as he draws his bow , aiming north. As he moves up, Crosseye can make out nothing on the hard ground. Likely do to his haste and the fact that is is dark. With things coming from the Red Hills, being caught weher you can be surrounded is never a good idea

Mack makes himself small and with the larger folks about, especially a liontaur and minotaur, its not hard to go unnoticed.

Atlas slows his breathing and takes a warrior's stance in preparation for an enemy charge. His shield is strapped to his left arm, held over his left knee which is positioned in front of his body. His back leg is a step back, ready to push him forward with force if the opportunity presents itself. He can feel the balance of his body as he shifts from foot to foot to test out the ground and make sure that he's properly set. His sword is held in his right hand down by his right hip. He'll raise it when he sees someone, no sense in wasting energy that might be needed later, even that little amount.

He looks at Bonivus, Lilith, and Crosseye and decides to shuffle a little more to the left to make sure that there's enough room to swing his sword and shield without hitting one of them. Then he peers into the darkness, waiting... (perception for anything that would signal that they are close, what they are, etc before they show up in the light: 8+2=10)

Taelith, Crosseye, do you have a shot? Looks like there are 6 of them out there, 3 right and 3 left. Atlas tries to see how many spears the goblin riders have on them, (Perception: 6+1=7), but most of them are too far away to tell with the dim light.

Hold steady! We cannot risk them getting between us and the wagon. Give them another second to get in closer. They cannot have that many spears on them! Bonivus, you all right?

Atlas takes one step north (to K16) to provide some cover for Bonivus, then waits for the goblin riders to come within range.

I try to move (eventually) into a position where either Lilith or I is flanking the Gnome/Rider (in M20). (So for this turn, moving 1 diagonally (to L21).

OK, time to try out these sais... I use my flurry of blows to do 2 attacks on the gnome (20 and 13, so I believe 1 hit for 2 damage (forgot to subtract the 1 on that damage roll)).

OOC: Still learning how my attack rolls work. I'm a little confused on a couple of things. I believe my Flurry Of Blows gives me 2 attacks, each at a -1 according to the chart. But in the reading, it they mention a -2 penalty, so I'm not sure which is correct. As for damage, my Sai damage is 1d3, and my Flurry Of Blows damage is 1d4, but I can use my sais WITH my Flurry of Blows. BUT, my flurry of blows uses hands, elbows, knees, etc. So #1 - not sure why the sai damage would be less then the Flurry of Blows damage, and #2 - not sure how to know which made contact - the sai or my elbow, etc. Either way, my damage is -1 due to weak strength. I rolled the lesser damage, 1d3-1. Please let me know if I'm doing this wrong, or if you can help clarify how my attacks work a little better. Thanks! :)

Attack roll 12. (N16)

OoC: I may hit sometime! (3 Misses now) Also to Mack this is my take on your attack rolls you get 3 attacks with flurry. 2 with Sais and additional with flurry but all attack rolls -2. So because of finesse you use dex attack roll would be d20 + 3 (dex mod) + 1 (racial) -2 (flurry) = d20+2. Damage I think would go first 2 attacks as Sais (1d3 -/+ mod) and third attack as flurry (1d4 -/+ mod). At least that is how I see it. Also I am not using anyone names yet as no one has told me theirs. I introduce myself but because the incoming got no names. So don't take offence.

"I am On My Way!!!! Oh, and by the way.... I'm Mack. Glad to meet you." :)

OOC: Thanks Crosseye. I didn't even think about it the way you presented. Learning something new every day. :) If that's the case, I don't get 2 sai attacks then. I was reading it as in my sais are in my hands, but are part of my "flurry of blows" attack as they are considered monk weapons and can be used with it.

DM Dan K A monk flurry of blows allows the monk to make 1 additional attack as if he had two weapon fighting. SO it allows Mack to make 2 attacks, where each attack is at a -2. Mack can decide if the attacks are with a monk weapon or as his unarmed strike, At higher levels when you have magical weapons this play a role. right now if you unarmed strike does more damage, it would make sense to say you strike with your unarmed attack. you can do this while holding the sai's of course, or other objects such as a torch of crossbow. Easiest way is to follow the Flurry of Blows chart. It provides your base attack bonus and tells you how many attacks you get. 1st level Monk makes 2 attacks -1/-1. Mack adds his dex +3, size+1 to get 2 attacks +3/+3 for d4 +str each

The group checks on Lilith. She is hurt bad, has broken out into some horrid rash, but for now she will live. Crosseye begins to clean and dress her wounds and Durbin pulls out a Healers Kit to aid him in his duties. The infection from the Goblin Dog has already taken its toll. The ranger surmises it'll clear up in a a day or so and should get no worse. With no magic, the only help for Lilith is rest and here in the open with over a dozen goblins and half again that many goblin dogs out in the darkness, rest was unlikely.

Lilith gains 1 HP after the hour of work by Crosseye

Good news is that Lilith is the only one hurt. the Dwarfs and 'Boy' kept their heads down and upon their shoulders. What appeared to be strikes against Bonivus, must have simply been tricks of the night and dancing fire light. The minotaur is unharmed.

Crosseye asks about possibly setting a trap about the perimeter. here on a flat nearly featureless road and low grassland though, that is a tall tall order. He is able to do something about the fires, having knowledge and training in getting the most out of brush and live wood. The smoking pyres are soon giving off a healthy 20' glow

Heal checks can help if additional saving throws are required. In this case their is no second roll. you can also
Treat Deadly Wounds: When treating deadly wounds, you can restore hit points to a damaged creature. Treating deadly wounds restores 1 hit point per level of the creature. If you exceed the DC by 5 or more, add your Wisdom modifier (if positive) to this amount. A creature can only benefit from its deadly wounds being treated within 24 hours of being injured and never more than once per day. You must expend two uses from a healer's kit to perform this task. You take a --2 penalty on your Heal skill check for each use from the healer's kit that you lack.

It has been several hours since the attack. The fires are low, spreading a ruddy glow some 10' about them. There is simply not enough fuel for them here on the open road. It is Korbiss, whose head snaps to the northeast and begins peering into the darkness. "I Think they are coming back again."

"I hate hit and runs in the middle of the night." Bonivus grumbles to his comrades as he wakes them for another comming fight. He takes up his position guarding the cart on a whim he opts to use his halberd. He readies the pole arm against the potential charge.

" I know what you mean! At least I got some sleep this time." I say to Bonivus. I quickly and silently grab my weapons and get into position, readying for the coming attack. I noc an arrow and patiently wait for the enemy again to be within range.

Not seeing anything yet, I move into a better position to protect Lilith (N20), try to be alert to anything all around (d20+7 perception check of 27), and go into stealth mode (d20+9 stealth check of 16).

I wonder to myself... if I used one of those Goblin heads like a puppet would they be convinced?

OOC: Did we search the bodies? Find anything? Where are the bodies now? Part of the fire since we're lacking fuel? Heads on a stick along our outer protected area? :)

"Too soon...Lilith, get back. You cannot take another round of this. Do you have anything to hit them from range? Bonivus, Crosseye, one of you put yourself between her and them. Mac, keep them from circling around us. I will stay up here and make myself a target."

I take a step out and start yelling curses and insults at them in common with the hope that I can draw them to me. I bang my sword and shield together and prepare for the rush.

--------------------------

I move to J15.

OOC: I am still getting used to this, I cannot believe we did not search them and do something to ward off the others. Also, I did not even think about the horses until someone mentioned them. We should have been protecting them as well. Oh my, it is taking longer to get back into the swing of things than I anticipated. We'll get there :-)

Lilith groans, if its from pain or from being awoken by the commotion its tough to say. "No, I don't have anything ranged...I'll stay back for now. " She stands slowly, digging her claws into the ground "I doubt I'll get lucky enough to scare them off again."

After the ambush during the night, the party tries to gather their thoughts and composure. What watches are set? Who is on which watch?

Lilith remains in pain and hurt.

Crosseye's stealth was successful, you think.

Mack's hand smells pungent. as vomit and pine pitch.

Altas, they seemed terrified and are fleeing in your wake.

Bonivus, your fine. No wounds are apparent. Perhaps you were just hit with goblin dog saliva? (OOC: Check your email! I need to editting permissions to help you with your character.)

(OOC: Please remind me what time the ambush was, during which watch (who was watching?), how long were people asleep before the attack? Any other important info. I've tried to contact Dan, but was unable.)

2nd: Lilith/Korbiss
3rd: Mac/Bonivus

Attack came "late into the first watch"
Crosseye joined us just moments before the attack.

Assuming 9PM-7AM for a watch schedule, each watch would be 3.5 hours and the time now would be about 1:30AM assuming (and this is just a rough guess of the timing of things):

00:00 Crosseye approaches
00:05 Goblins attack
00:15 Goblins flee
00:15 We start taking account of the damage and take various actions (noted below)
01:15 We completed a search of the bodies, Mac created his puppet, Crosseye helps Lilith bandage up her wounds, we all start going to bed again with Lilith/Korbiss on watch
01:30 The goblins appear to be coming back and we all prepare for battle while Mac tries to trick them with his puppet and I try to either intimidate them to run away or to get them to attack me so that Lilith can find cover.

I am a little confused, and let the look show on my face. Not just about Crosseye, but everything in general. I make sure everyone seems ok, check on the horses, and then setttle back into "Watch" mode again. "It looks like everyone can try to get some rest again."

I meander around the inner perimeter.

False alarms? (Jay CoDM)
Wednesday July 9th, 2014 7:14:09 PM

Maybe the shadows are playing tricks? Maybe the goblins are returning? But unease ripples around the camp. So much so, that Mack adds himself to second watch, with Lilith and Korbiss. Crosseye joins the ranks and will likely stay until morning since goblins seem keen on travelers right now.

Sounds of night play tricks. The chitter of small mammals sound like walking across snapping twigs. The wind sounds like message calls. Insects stop chirping and the night goes completely quiet. A bit unsettling. Then they start up again.

Second watch begins. Crosseye, Korbiss, Lilith and Mack..... Perception checks.

Having said my mind to Crosseye earlier, I save that conversation until the morning as promised. Instead I look for Bonivus. "Bonivus! We need sleep, but we also need to divvy up the gold. Could you hold it until morning and we'll work it out over breakfast? Feels like it's a couple hundred pieces if I'm not mistaken, so put it somewhere safe...some of our comrades might not be able to help themselves." Atlas gives a stern, knowing look to both Lilith and Mac.

"For the rest of you, have your pick of the gear. If there's a conflict let Bonivus or me know and we'll sort it out." With that I head over to the wagon and my gear, tighten up my armor one last time, then lay down for an uncomfortable sleep.

Mac's not so soft kick and whisper of goblins sneaking in was no surprise to Atlas, he was sure they would come back. He just wished it would have been closer to the morning. Without acting overly suspicious, Atlas stands up and acts like he's getting ready for his watch. He goes through the typical routine of stretching, shifting his armor, picking up his sword and shield, and starts to head towards one of the fires on the North side of the wagon to act like he's about to warm up himself up.

As he approaches he hears the twang of a bow strong and hiss of an arrow coming from near the wagon. He tenses in preparation for an attack, but doesn't give away that he's aware of the Goblins until he's sure they are attacking. His mind races...If that arrow misses maybe they'll think that we were just trying to get a rabbit or something. If not, I'm ready to make a few more puppets for Mac.

Atlas keeps his eyes averted, but does his best to take in his surroundings while doing so.

I see where the goblins are now and think to myself I take the south on as the North-East one is way off and out of range. So I head to the south part of camp (J22) with my bow ready and armed. As I pass Mack I whisper to him "Be ready and watch my back when you can move in on the South goblin!"

I quietly say over to Atlas"You take the west and Bonivus can take the North West one. As the North-East one is way off. We will have to worry about him after."

When I am position I let lose an arrow at the goblin's head. (Range roll = 17 should be a hit damage 1) Just scratching his left Ear. He now knows I know he is there and where I am (trying to get him to come after me over Mack and Lilith)

Atlas sees that the goblins have them surrounded and realizes that it is just Mack that has their back. He's taken to the shadows, maybe he'll catch one off guard, but then what? Knowing that Lilith is in trouble and that he cannot get between her and all the goblins, he searches for other options. The thought of intimidating them is tempting, but they'll just come back again. Better to just deal with them now.

Without many options, Atlas moves to the fire at the back of the wagon while banging his sword and shield and yelling, "Bring it on you filthy greenskin gnomes! This will be less work than my morning practice with the pell!"

Hopefully that does the trick and they want to kill me now instead of Lilith.

Atlas moves to square I21.

Goad the goblins: 8 (+2 if Bluff = 10, +6 if Intimidate = 14) There's no feat or skill for this, so just throwing things out there hoping one will stick. Intimidate seems like the best option, but of course I would say that with it being a skill I'm good at :-)

GR5 was charging Atlas and Crosseye at full tilt, when suddenly something happens, the goblin draws the reigns, nothing happens. He looks panics, looking straight at Atlas and can't seem to abort. The goblin bales off the dog and drops in a puff of dust. It stands, and starts to retreat. THE DOG! IS STILL COMING! (Please note that now, GR5 is now GD5)

GR1, GR3, GF6 seem to be waiting.

GR6 is hesitant, but the dog seems intent on Atlas or Crosseye. But GR6 throws a spear at Atlas regardless! Hitting AC 11, for 2 damage....

Atlas winces as the spear finds a gap in his armor, but doesn't let it slow him. With the lack of targets coming from the West, he decides that it's best to return to protect Lilith, even if it costs him a chance to take a Goblin head right this moment. As he runs past Crosseye and Mack he yells, "Keep these 3 off our back, I'll cover Lilith!"

--------------------------
Atlas runs (20' x 4 for running = up to 16 squares) to square O18.

OOC: How did that spear hit me? My AC is 21, not 11. Am I missing something that would lower my AC or just a mistake? Thanks!

DM to Atlas, DON'T PANIC!! I usually just post to hit and damage, regardless of effect, and trust that you take or in this case, DON'T take damage. You're fine. But he targeted you! I fixed your header. You are still at full.

Lilith smirks to herself, thinking of how in her next letter to her adoptive mother she can tell her battling goblins, that'll give the old lady a good scare. "Hey Atlas, mind if I go up?!"

If Lilith is successful:
Lilith crouches down, before launching herself into a backflip on to the top of the wagon. She lands with a thud, and is mindful of trying to keep her weight evenly distributed.

Atlas moves to P18. (Lilith is Large and occupies that space, so I placed you close.)
Crosseye moves and hits the dog. (Assuming you are attacking GD5?)
Lilith is certain that if she lands, she could flip the wagon. She flips but lands in where she launched. The flip was impressive and the goblins who were approuching her are in awe.
Mack holds his position. (I'm giving you a Readied Action when they are in range)
Bonivus sets his halberd.

Goblins Round 2
GF1 charges Bonivus and skewers himself, unable to stop, on the minotaur's halberd. As a result the other two goblins and one rider slow and reconsider options. The goblin dangles from your halberd, and slumps, dead.
The Goblins on Lilith and Atlas pause at her specticle.
GD5 charges Crosseye, losing track of Atlas.Hits AC 22 for 6 damage with a bite. Roll a Fort Save please.
The other straggler goblins close in.

Atlas takes an aggressive step forward and slices his longsword horizontally at the goblin, with the hope of catching his arm or cutting into his side. He clearly connects, but with the poor light from the fire it is hard to see if his blade made it through the armor. However, it certainly felt like his blade went half way through the foul creature. He quickly pulls his sword back to prepare for another blow when he hears a yell from Crosseye. "Crosseye, hang in there! Mack, I'm sure you've got a great idea up your sleeve...now might be a good time for it!".

As he twists his body to present his shield to the goblin next to him, Atlas looks over his shoulder at Lilith, "what ever you're doing keep it up, it has them distracted."

GR1 repositions himself.
GR2 charges Bonivus, GF2 and GF3 move in and attack him. The goblins were smart to close distance, now the reach of the halberd is less effective. THE DOG SNAPS AND NEARLY BITES A KNEECAP..... HOWEVER! THE GOBLIN SPEAR STICKS INTO YOUR THIGH FOR 1 DAMAGE

Atlas dances left and right as the goblins spears try to find a weak spot in his defense. For a moment his concentration lapses and he forgets about the dog, but fortunately his shield happened to be in the right place at the right time as the dog's snout thumped loudly against it.

Atlas gives in to his training and is able to find the rhythm of this dance. As soon as the opening presents itself he strikes at the dog in hopes of killing it and causing it's rider to stumble. His aim was true, but the dog appears to have been quicker than he anticipated.

Atlas attacks the dog at P17 (attack: 2+5=7, damage: 4+3=7)

OOC: Jay, that's twice now I've seen you put someone in a square where they labeled it right but you said they were wrong. You said that you moved Mack to O20, but I clearly see him in N20, right where he said. Something is going on. It's not that big of a deal, but I don't want you getting frustrated by constantly 'correcting' our placement when in reality we're putting it where we see it. Screen shot coming in email just so that you're aware what we are seeing.

"So, you want some more, do you?" I try to move around him a little (moving to O21) and try to get him to turn away from Lilith, and then I perform another flurry-of-blows on GR4.

(Hitting AC 16 for 1 damage, and AC 15 for 2 damage)

OOC: I'm attacking with a flurry-of-blows, which is hands, elbows, knees, feet, whatever. However, I can use my sais with my flurry-of-blows, which I am doing so. At the present time, I'm not sure exactly what the advantage would be to using my sais instead of bare hands, other than I'm not actually touching them with my bare hands. I see a -2 penalty for my attacks in one description, and a -1 in the other. I've been using the -1. However, for damage, my flurry of blows is 1d4, while my sais are 1d3 (both with -1 penalty due to my Strength). I've been using the 1d3, even though I'm guessing at least half my hits are non-sai hits. I'm not sure exactly how that's supposed to work though, so I'm winging it. Please feel free to give your thoughts on this if I should be doing it differently.
As far as position, regardless of whether or not I'm using my sais or bare-handed flurry of blows, my assumption was I needed to be standing right next to the enemy. So I've been attempting to move into a position to do so.

GR4, dog attacks MACK once more, rider jabs at LILITH with his remaining spear. As the attack comes again Atlas throws his shield up to deflect the spear of the goblin rider, and in doing so he also avoids the spear of the other goblin. However, the maneuver left him vulnerable to the dog, which took advantage. As the Dog's sharp teeth dig into the back of Atlas's thigh he screams in pain! Using every ounce of will power he has, he avoids just ripping away, afraid of the extra damage it would cause. Instead, he is able to bring his shield down on the dogs head enough to make him let go.

The pain is searing, but there's no time to dwell on it. Damn dog keeps sneaking in under my defense, I better deal with it. Atlas focuses on the the dog and swings with everything he has. He appears to catch it, but was it enough to do any real damage? There's no time to tell as Atlas turns to re-position in preparation for the next onslaught.

As Atlas turns he yells back to Crosseye, "I think Bonivus is down! Someone draw those goblins away from him before they finish him!"

Miss, not this time I take another mighty swing with my trusted axe at the golbin dog (GR6 Dog)again. This time it hits its target square on mark (roll = 25 Nat 20 so not sure on how to do crit as I crit with 20 and crit is x3) slicing though the dog with ease. (damage = 17 not sure because of crit if I x3 that?)

" Ahhhh, Take the I yell at goblin as I slice though his mount! Atlas I am a bit busy but with get him as fast as I can. Can anyone else get to him??" I yell out.

-----------
Attack roll= 25 (Natural 20)
Damage roll 17

OoC : not sure how crits work I rolled a 20 that is my crit with a great axe and says x3 then so do I take 17x3=51 as damage? or is there some sort of other roll I need to do or the beast needs to do to confirm a crit?

OOC: crit damage. The base damage from the weapon is multiplied by that number, x2, x3, etc. then add whatever strength bonus or weapon enhancement.

Example; Crosseye might get x3 from his weapon. Roll 3d12+whatever, not just 1d12.

A common beginner mistake is rolling damage then multiplying by the result. We don't do that. ;)

I didn't think death would feel like this. Oh so dark... so cold.... is that dirt I taste? ACCKKKKK!!!!! Goblin Rider still right in front of me!!!!!!!!!! I attack the goblin (GR4), my flurry so fast that it blurs.... or is that just my vision? (Hit AC 6 for 0 damage, and AC 6 for 1 damage)

OOC: That method of crit damage multiplier actually works IN my favor, since I have a STR penalty instead of a bonus. :)

OOC2: Not real clear on the damage I took yet, then. Do you not use the Pathfinder rule that you do a Fort save for instant death if you take more the 50% damage in one hit? It sounds like "no", and I am still alive in some form, although probably severely injured. So I'm not exactly sure what my options are at the moment, so I'm doing an attack, just in case. Feel free to modify as needed.

OOC: Anyone bit by the dogs last round must succeed in a Fortitude save, DC12. Failure means an allergic reaction.

Goblin AC13
Dog AC16

Bonivus continues to lie on the ground his breathing shallow but stable. The wound on his leg seems to have stopped oozing blood so much.

OOC: I stabilized? cool! I nat 20'd that save vs. the dog so I don't need to make another right? I'll do it any way ( d20+3=16). I made it. Constructively using my nap time to hallucinate/dream.

Thursday July 24th, 2014 7:02:47 PM

POST IS ON IT'S WAY..... BUT NOW, A BIT OF LIGHT READING!

OOC:
Bonivus: Not too cliche to say your dice suck. But there is ONE dice pool we all use, one could easily say that you were rolling the DM's dice that round, not yours. ;)

Mack: You knew the goblin was there. There is 'technically' no facing (within view). So you basically have omnidirectional senses. Silly, yep, but it's fantasy.
Also, your Deflect Arrows feat allows you once per round to just knock the spear from the air. Note that it isn't JUST arrows that you can swat. If a boulder is chucked at you though.... well, we'll cross that river when/if we get to it. ;)
----------------------------------------------
Deflect Arrows:
You can knock arrows and other projectiles off course, preventing them from hitting you.

Prerequisites: Dex 13, Improved Unarmed Strike.

Benefit: You must have at least one hand free (holding nothing) to use this feat. Once per round when you would normally be hit with an attack from a ranged weapon, you may deflect it so that you take no damage from it. You must be aware of the attack and not flat-footed. Attempting to deflect a ranged attack doesn't count as an action. Unusually massive ranged weapons (such as boulders or ballista bolts) and ranged attacks generated by natural attacks or spell effects can't be deflected.

GF4 is staggered by the hit and decides to flee, north west. Atlas' AoO finishes him.
GD4 hurt and angry, the red mist descends on the hound and he snaps again at Mack. MISSES
GR1 doesn't like what he's just seen. The halfling swats the spear from the air. And it ALMOST flies back at him. He swings the hound around and gives a hoot. He runs south.
GR2 turns, hearing Crosseye, and then hearing the retreat call from GR1. He decides to take his haul from Bonivus and flee as well. However, as he begins to move, his treasures fall to the ground, the ratty bag tearing. He leaves it an moves west with haste.

GD4 is the only remaining. Together, you can easily dispatch the mongrel.

Lilith groans, with the rush draining out of her she feels the effect of the terrible rash returning. She turns to call over her shoulder to Crosseye "Not a goddamn thing. Unless the Boy and the others having something?" She cautiously knocks on the door of the wagon, hoping those inside will have something of aid.

Atlas turns back to the group and takes in the scene, "Damn lucky those goblins don't come with a spine or else it might have been the end of us all. Crosseye, I don't have anything either, please make him comfortable and we'll have to wait it out."

First things first, let's get this bite wrapped up so I can be of some use. Atlas heads over to his pack and grabs his waterskin. Without having bandages to dress the wound he decides the best action is to just make sure it's clean. Without much modesty he takes off his boots and then his pants. He proceeds to clean the dog bite with some water and gently dabs at it with a part of his pant leg that isn't as dirty as the rest. The would is as clean as he can get it and bleeding seems to have stopped for the moment, so he puts his pants and boots back on.

Standing back up, Atlas heads over to Mack, "Nice move on that spear, likely saved your life. You alright bandaging yourself up while I check on the others?"

Ooc. Mack. Your hit points should read 2 not -2.

Lilith, I sped up the finish for several reasons, least of which is timing for the module. Consider the dog dead.

As a Dm, and player, I was concerned initially about you guys having a healer. You lost your only potential healer.

I'll make DM post later this evening. Laptop unavailable.

Thinking to myself " I wish I had some healing kits or even some sort of healing potion. Next town or settlement we come to that is the first thing I am going to invest in or look for."

I look at the others all see they all need some sort of help so I use my healing skills as best I can to help them all. ( Heal rolls)

To Atlas "We need to get out of here moving on somehow! We are just sitting pray out here in the open. How is the wagon, and the horses? I think we can move Bonivus in to it and that way get out of here with all of us? Plus we need to get him to a healer of some sort I have done all I can with my skills right now."

---------------

OoC not sure if I can do on heal roll for the other or have to so one for each so doing one for each.

Heal roll Atlas - 19
Heal roll Mack - 22
Heal roll Lilith - 22

Anyone want to help me drag these corpses into a pile a little further downwind? Best not to leave a clear picture of exactly what went on here."

As the boy works Atlas starts carrying the goblins and dogs to a spot a little ways off. The stench is terrible, but he plods on.

When the wagon is ready they struggle, but eventually get Bonivus into it. Atlas puts Bonivus's gold into his backpack and puts it under his huge head. "They should have some healing potions at the Tree, we just need to get there. We'll have to stock up for future engagements as well."

Atlas turns to Lillith as they start to head out, "How's the rash coming? Filthy creatures, we'll have to remember that for the next time we encounter them. I expect they'll have some salve at the Tree as well."

As I look at everyone (and myself) I wish I had learned more from my mom before leaving the village. I'll definitely need to learn quick if my skills are ever able to help keep us alive in the future.

After seeing if there is anything else I can do to help those bleeding and with rashes (I'm assuming there's not since there's nothing anywhere in the area to use), I head over to give Atlas a hand with the dead bodies.

OOC: Healer, shmealer.... When you start with not enough money to buy a healing kit, and you're left all alone at level 1 like this out in the middle of no where, this is what I'd expect. Surprised we're alive, actually. ;) If they really wanted this wagon and us to make it, they should have left a few healing potions with the wagon when they told us to catch up later.

While the boy works on the wheel again, I collect my bow and then decide to help with the bodies, but as we move them I search then with the hope of finding some useful things ( maybe a healing kit or two or even potion perception roll-26)

When that is done I say to everyone "I am going to try and get a nap while work is being done on the wheel" and then I go find a spot to close my eyes for a bit (still in armor though with weapons by my side ready to be use)

When the wagon it ready I then help Atlas with Bonivus

Monday July 28th, 2014 4:57:18 PM

The group determines, with heal checks, a look at the wagon and Bonivus (WHO IS NOT AWAKE.... he stabilized but if one is still at negative numbers, they are still OUT)..... that it might be a smart idea to rest here awhile. Using the fragile wagon to haul Bonivus wouldn't be of help since it would risk damage to the wagon and be slow and with everyone wounded, getting rest and first aid might help. And Bonivus could move under his own power as early as tomorrow morning.
Goblins won't likely attack during the day and the ones you played with last night won't likely return in a hurry.

It's about 9 in the morning. The sun is up and it's partly cloudy. No wind. And the temperature is mild. The wagon could use at least a few more hours. The dwarves look upbeat but boy is still grumbling.

Boy has stopped using Bonivus as a stool/bench.

What do you want to do? Move/press on when the wagon is finished? Stay to heal up some and risk another night like the last?

OoC : as I posted I am going to rest during the day. Until the wagon is ready and I will do what ever the group wants but think moving at night will not be a good idea. To much can go wrong with a group of this size and the wagon again, but that will depend on how mush we can heal up. We need to get to the tree and suppy up, on healing especially.

Also did we find anything of use on the bodies as I search them?

"Alright gang, we have a decision to make. The wagon could use some more work, but we know there are goblins about. I recommend that we get moving as soon as the boy wraps up the final necessary repairs, but we'll keep the pace slow to prevent further damage to both the wagon and us. I just don't want to be here again tonight, who knows what those goblins will send our way. What do you say? Either way, we need breakfast, so I'll get to starting the fire."

Atlas stays engaged in the conversation as he gets his flint & steel out of his backpack, gathers the little wood they have remaining, shaves some pieces off with his dagger and uses them to start the fire. It takes a few tries, but eventually the flames are enough to heat the food over.

-------------------------------
OOC: I'm assuming that Pathfinder is similar to D&D and I don't need a skill check to start a fire with flint & steel in normal conditions.

She runs her fingers through her hair absentmindedly, trying to not itch her rash while at the same time itching to do what she does best- thieving. She looks around and mulls to herself, she could easily lift Bonivus' share of the gold...but her conscious shoots an annoying little pain through her body, reminding her that these boys had literally just protected and fought with her. "Soon enough, I'll have a target I can deal with my way..." She mumbles to herself.

The smell of whatever Atlas is cooking starts to waft into her nostrils "Oy, Atlas! Anything I can help with? Or maybe devour?"

"Hey young lad.... I have a handful of gold coins here for you if you can get this wagon up and running and quicker. Anything I can do to help?"

I give my 2 cents during the group discussion: "I guess my thoughts are that we won't be able to survive another night like that one, but I also don't see us catching up with the rest of the caravan. I think we need to get up and at least get as much distance as we can during the day. We might have to come up with a different strategy for the coming night, or see what presents itself as we travel quickly. Maybe we'll get lucky and I can find some useful herbs at some point to help us a little bit on the healing side, or we'll find a place easier to defend, or even a magical luck dragon that will protect and comfort us." I am wondering why everyone is looking at me weird.... apparently they don't come from a land of magical luck dragons?

OOC: I know it's probably not safe or wise to travel too far from the wagon, but if I see anything that appears it might be promising to find some herbs or plants or such that might help us with our injuries, I take a chance and venture away a little bit. (d20+6 herbalist check of 11)... letting someone know, of course. :)

OOC2: I know I don't have a Healer's Kit, but it was the first item on my list of things to buy once I got enough money (started out low as a monk). We should have plenty now once we get to a town. In fact, I can't carry most of mine, so I'd just put it on the wagon at some point for everyone to help themselves. Maybe I'll leave some in "safe" spots for Lilith to steal. :)

Boy says the wagon will be ready in a few hours.

Herbs and plants are found to help with healing.

Bonivus is awake, weak and DISABLED.

One of the dwarves pipes up. "AY! We've been talkin' and think its a good idea for us to stay here and rest a night. Heal up and we'll watch the camp. BOY! Won't sleep tonight... WILL YOU BOY!? Anyway, the fact is, we don't think its a good idea to stay but stupider to leave. We like you and don't want to have to continue alone."

HEAL SKILL Please note long term care.

"Well, I don't know if those plants will do much or not, my experience tending the wounded didn't include the picking. I'll give it a shot though." Atlas goes about trying to create something resembling paste with the plants that Mac brought back. He tests it on himself to make sure it doesn't cause a rash or make things worse, then he applies it to the wounds of everyone else in the party.

When he is done he goes over to the Dwarves, "I don't think it is wise, but they paid us to protect you, so we're not going any where unless you are." Atlas turns to the rest of the group, "Looks like we're taking a day for rest gang. Find a comfortable spot to get some sleep and let those wounds heal."

With that Atlas takes his own advice and finds a comfortable spot to check on his wounded leg and catch up on sleep. He takes time throughout the day to check in on each of the party members to make sure that the salve he created is not doing any harm and to add more if needed.

I am not for moving either. We will just be an easy moving target and much harder to defend if on the go. I yawn clear my sleepy see after a good and much need sleep. I approach Atlas and ask " So what is it boss we digging in or moving out. I thing it would be much easy to rest up more and easier to defend if we dig in. Moving at night we could easily get ambushed and would be much harder to defend, plus moving with a big group at night who knows what else could go wrong. I don't like it and would like to get underway but staying one more night might be the safer way? Either way I will do was everyone wants!"

Heal check on everyone -4 no kits +6 skill = 22 so everyone if I understand over 8 hours (long term care) everyone gets 2 hp back?? And if I use treat dealy wounds on Bonivus he gets 1 (1 for my level) let me know if I am right?

OOC: I'm assuming, with all of us that are able doing long-term care on each other, we'd probably get max hit points back every 8 hours. ? I'm not sure what bonus we'd get to that for any herbs found, though. And also, do I need to make any type of apothecary check? Just in case: (d20+5 apothecary check of 20)

So, it seems we need to know:
#1 - how many points do we get back per 8 hour period of resting? and
#2 - how many hours do we make it before we get attacked again?

It is decided that to push on after the attack could lead to greater disaster and so the group stays put. The wagon is a few hours away from being ready, but even after Boy has it repaired, the injuries from the goblin attacks have the party deciding to spend an extra day and night right where they are.

Crosseye is able to use the last of the supplies from the healing kit to tend to Bonvius' most grievous wound in the hour immediately following the attack. Bonivus gains 1 HP bringing him to 0

The following day, Atlas and Crosseye both do what they can to provide care for the others as they rest.
Korbiss and Durbin are able to assist, setting a better camp about the wagon, preparing meals and such. the pair also heads out several hundred yards to take down a small tree. Not Kiln dried wood, but better than nothing.
They also take it upon themselves to dispose of the bodies, dragging them about 100 yards off the road to the north. "If more come looking, they'll see their brethren all laid out in welcome." All of the gear and goods, are piled into the wagon and accounted for. After this, they both settle down on the east side of the wagon for shade and fall asleep. "Wake us for dinner and we'll keep watch through the night so you 2 can continue to help mend the others."

Mack is kept lying down and not let to go wandering off. To do so would nullify the long term care that Atlas and Crosseye are trying to provide.

As evening approaches, Korbin and Durbiss are woken from their nap and the two dwarf take up a spot on the northeast and northwest corner of the wagon. They still help fetch water, and such to aid Crosseye and Atlas, but mostly they keep an eye out for more trouble

Crosseye and Atlas continue their work through the long night. A very long night indeed. But one that passes without another assault.

Each of the slain goblins had a small bag of 50gp and were equipped with 2 short spear, a hand axe, dagger and was wearing leather armor.

Game Notes:
Rest is just that, 8 hours of lying down. You cannot gain the benefits of Rest or Long term care while doing anything.
Bonivus has rested and received Long Term Care for 24 hours and gains 4 HP
Mack has rested and received Long Term Care for 24 hours and gains 4 HP. Dwarfs were successful at Aiding Another granting a +2 to Atlas' 13
Lilth has rested for 24 hours and gains 2 HP
Crosseye and Atlas are both fatigued and gained no HP

He was we'll trained and tough me as much as he could but I see that is still a big difference between training and real life. I hope as time goes on we can learn from each other."

Crosseye, you did a great job with the fight going toe-to-toe with those vile creatures, not to mention your assistance tending the wounded. Your Grandfather would be proud, so hold your head high! We were extremely lucky to have you stumble upon us.

"We haven't done any pledges of loyalty to each other, but I do believe that tonight bonded us. It seems that this is going to be a long journey, so I am glad that you are willing to take up with us. My promise to you, and to everyone here, is that as we fight together none of us will be alone. We'll defend each other to the last drop of blood and never leave a comrade behind. That's the best I can do right now considering the circumstances, but I offer it to all of you."

With that Atlas gives a nod to Crosseye and goes about taking care of the camp and looking in on the people healing.

"Lilith, get some rest friend, you've had a very traumatic day and pacing isn't going to help you heal. We need to save our strength, as I doubt this will be the last confrontation before we reach the Tree."

"Mack, stop twitching, it's not killing you sitting still. Imagine this is a game, the person that sits still the longest wins. I know you can do it!"

"Bonivus, good to see that you are awake! You fought well out there tonight, your ancestors would be proud! Please rest up. We're going to need you strong if we're going to survive this journey."

After making the rounds Atlas goes back to his backpack and closes his eyes for a bit. After a moment he says, "Korbiss, Durbin, if either of you get sleepy you be sure to wake me and I'll take the next turn. No nodding off!" A moment later you hear Atlas snoring softly.

Now that I feel MUCH better and somewhat rested, I see what I can do to help the others. I'm feeling anxious to explore a little further from the wagon though, if we don't get moving soon.

OOC: Glad to get the 4 hit points, although I'm a little unclear who's helping heal and who's not. Guess it's not relevant. Percentage-wise, my hit points were actually better than others. But maybe the plan is to alternate care? Or maybe this leads to a deeper discussion on what exactly is a hit point... for another area on the site. :)

Die Another Day Dan K
Thursday July 31st, 2014 8:21:04 PM

The party makes it through the night and the sun rises once again in the east to brighten the skies above the land. The dwarfs, Korbis and Durbin, are tired, as are Crosseye and Atlas. The four spent the entire night tending the wounds of Lilith, Mack and Bonivus. The wagon is ready and without further delay the group continues west. To the north, as the day passes noon, a deep horn blast sounds drawing all eyes to the horizon. The denizens of the Red Hills may not be beaten just yet.

Korbis cracks the reigns and the team of horses leap to a canter. "Not sure what is going on, but I suppose no one will be minding if we try not to find out."

Game notes of the healing
I had a heal check for Bonivus, Lilith and Mack by Atlas
I had a heal check from Crosseye, I used that for Deadly Wounds on Bonivus. Going forward, there needs to be a heal check for each character
I then had Korbis and Durbin Aid Another on Atlas' heal checks
So as to not nullify the healing efforts, I had Mack, Lilith and Bonivus just rest

The wagon rumbles away from the horns. The horns eventually fade and the wagon rattles on. Boy looks at the parts of the wagon as it rolls on as if he's worried about it's stability. After a few hours, he had begun to forget about it.

The terrain starts changing as well. It grows lusher and more verdant. Animals begin appearing off and on, but more importantly, the air grows cleaner, fresher, less stale. There are also small trees cropping up here and there. Their sizes vary so it does not create a canopy, no real cover.

The dwarves decide 'here' is a nice place to set camp. Has it been that long already?! Sure enough, it's getting on to dinner time.
"BOY! Fire. Feed for the horses." He complies.

Atlas finds a decent spot for sleeping and tosses his backpack on the ground to mark it. It is on the North side of the wagon near the front wheel. He takes the time to prepare his meal over the fire that the boy started and then goes to his spot and quietly devours it.

The past 48 hours have taken their toll on him both physically and mentally and it is beginning to show. The rest of the group seems to be getting along fine, so Atlas keeps to himself for a bit. After eating his meal he starts one of the meditation techniques the monks taught him to help clear his mind and help his body rest.

Now that we have more plant and tree cover, I see if I can find anything else to help with healing. (d20+6 herbalist check of 9)

OOC: I believe we've done the Heal rolls, but haven't had a few questions answered.... can we do long term care while someone is riding in the wagon? Did the healing herbs found aid at all? I believe 24 hours has passed since the last time we got hit points back, but how much of that was spent traveling and how much resting? Here were my rolls for providing long-term care to everyone (from up above):
(d20+1 heal check of 15 on Atlas)
(d20+1 heal check of 11 on Lilith)
(d20+1 heal check of 20 on Bonivus)
(d20+1 heal check of 21 on Crosseye) - hey, natural 20! Full Heal? :)
Does Atlas, Bonivus, and Crosseye each get 4 points back then, and Lilith and I each get 1 point back for the prior 24 hours?

I speak out to everyone " I am sorry but I need to get some sleep, even a little will help." SO as soon as I get a chance I find a nice quite place by the wagon to lay out my bedroll and get some much need sleep but I keep my armor on and my axe and bow at my side just in case! As my head hits the ground my eyes close and fast a sleep. The Imagines in my sleep are from the past battle and the deaths.

Atlas opens his eyes and looks around. Everyone seems to have gone about their evening and he feels much better, so he stands up to make the rounds. Part way up he hesitates and his face winces. OK, my thoughts are more clear, but my body still needs some more time. He gingerly finishes standing and walks around the camp.

"Mack, thanks for the help with my wound, it is much appreciated."

"Bonivus, thank you, I will take you up on that. My body seems to be struggling to heal with the lack of sleep and travel. Let's let Korbiss and Durbin take the first two watches, then you can pick up the next. Please wake me after you."

"Lilith, that rash is looking much better. How are you feeling?"

"Crosseye, get some sleep, you have earned it."

"Korbiss, Durbin, you mind taking the first two watches tonight so we can get some more rest? It seems that these wounds are going to take some time to heal. Bonivus will follow you, so please wake him when ready."

Atlas walks by the boy and gives him a stern look. He reaches out to rub the boy's hair to show that he's playing, but decides against it after the look he gets back. With that, Atlas limps back to his backpack, pulls out his bedroll and gets his stuff settled. He takes one last look out to the perimeter to make sure that everything is quiet, then lays down to sleep until he is called for watch duty. He is out before his head hits his backpack.

If the night goes without a hitch, healing will continue. But what you all need is days, not hours. The dwarves can attend to healing you guys. Crosseye and Atlas have bypassed any real healing to help the group, so the dwarves plan to help them.

Boy has been told to watch again tonight.

OoC: This shall not happen again friends.

The group stops the wagon and camps for the night. Tracks are searched for in the immediate area and none of note are found. Small tracks perhaps belonging to a fox and another set to a raccoon are the only things Crosseye finds. It was not possible to ride in the wagon in anyway that could allow someone to rest. Breaks could be taken while perched on some of the supply chests and gear, but other than getting off your feet, it helped little.

A fire is started and now that some trees are more abundant, finding wood worth burning is a much easier task.

Korbiss and Durbin agree to take the first two, 4 hour watches, but remind the party that they are not trained warriors. They do, however know how to yell and scream to wake the rest of you. The Boy is also put on watch with them.
The party therefore tries to get some more real rest. 8 complete hours worth. Mack stays up tending to the groups wounds.

Mack notes as the second of Warrd's moons heads to the horizon, indicating that Sunrise is about an hour away, that the Boy is sound asleep. Korbin sits next to him, stroking the hair on his head absently as he gazes northward for trouble. Durbin is out by the fire where he has been standing all night. Other than a wolf howl, well probably a wolf howl, the night is peaceful. The horns from earlier in the day were not heard again and nothing ever showed itself to be a possible source of the call. None of the goblins from before had horns on them and so it seems likely some other creatures of the Red Hills were about. Fortunately, they seemed to be about elsewhere.

Sunrise splashes light across the land and with it the promise of new life. The party breaks camp and are on the road again in a couple hours.

"We should be home free Durbin" Korbis says cheerfully. "Can almost see the Tree, bet we will in less than an hour!"
Korbis frowns, "You're an idiot. That terr won't be in view til well after high sun"
"10 gp and all the ale I can drink tonight says you're wrong Durbin."
"I'll take your money" Korbiss looks for anyone in the party walking along "Hey I need a witness. We see the tree before high sun and I pay Durbin 10 gold and for all his ale tonight. If not, he's paying me."

Winning Bets - Co DM Dan K
Monday August 11th, 2014 5:12:48 PM

Eyes are peeled for the most part, but with the eminent threat over it can be hard to concentrate. Or perhaps the road is taking its toll. Lilith chuckles a bit and agrees to be the witness to the bet between Korbiss and Durbin. Korbiss promptly socks Durbin in the shoulder. "You're in for it now you cheap double taker. Thought I'd forget the witness now didn't you bearded fat elfish girl." In response, Durbin cracks the reigns and the horses bolt forward sending Korbiss over his backside and into the flat of the wagon.
"Oh we'll be seeing the Tree by midday you fool!" he calls and cracks the reigns again

Mack is bounced from his nap as the horses pull the wagon at what is now a gallop and by the fact that Korbiss has just landed on him. Boy, who is also in back, just tries to make himself small and get out of the way.
"CHEATER!" Korbiss thunders as he tries to get to his feet. "By you're witless grandfather you're a cheater!"

The wagon blasts ahead at full speed. The tracks and signs of small animals that might have been of interest, Coyote, fox, wolf, raccoon and deer are all purged from anyone's mind. The task now is to try and keep the wagon at least in sight.

The party has little choice, but to run after Durbin and the wagon he is driving like a mad man. Fortunately you do not have to run far. At the insult to his grandfather, Durbin lets go of the reigns and climbs into the back to give Korbiss a piece of his mind and several helpings of his fists.

Boy climbs past the now brawling dwarfs and grabs the reigns, pulling the horses to a stop.
Crosseye, Bonivus, Atlas and Lilith arrive at the end of the dwarfs aggressive negotiations.

"Not my fault you didn't lay out all the conditions Korbiss." Durbin says as he climbs out to help the other dwarf to his feet.

Korbiss gets back into the wagon. Durbin apologizes to you all for having to go through all that. As he turns about, just over the horizon can clearly be seen the great green canopy of a tree. Even though it must still be nearly 10 miles away, the lush canopy can easily be seen.

Korbis turns to Lilith, "Its nearly noon now, if he hadn't flagged the horses we wouldn't be seeing that Tree"
Durbin counters "Course we would, explain to the poor sport, he lost and has to pay up"

Atlas takes a moment catch his breath and rubs at the wound on his leg. It is healing, but not nearly as fast as he would like.

"Korbiss, Durbin, I appreciate your bet, I surely do. However, there's still a few of us that wouldn't mind taking our time wrapping up this trip. Another sprint like that and I might not be making it to the Tree. Lilith, call the bet for us would you, then let's get going at a reasonable pace. Everyone all right with that?"

Atlas waits for the group to catch their breath, Lilith to settle the bet, and for Korbiss and Durbin to agree. When the group gets going again he takes up his spot on the North side of the wagon again.

The Tree of Parting - Co DM Dan K
Tuesday August 12th, 2014 11:45:49 PM

Korbis and Durbin grumble quite a bit at Lilith's refusal to settle to the bet, but they are not willing to push the matter either. Instead they set the wagon off again and take it upon themselves to argue about who won the bet for what could be the reminder of the trip.
Mack locates his banjo, quite unharmed by the jaunt in the back of the wagon

As the next few hours move by, the land to the north takes on the greatest change. instead of endless plains to the Red Hills, single and small copse trees and lush grasses lead to a sizable track of woods. Durbin and Korbis both stop their 3 hour long argument to cast an uneasy eye towards it. "I've heard it is part of the Culverwood, makes it a dangerous place." Durbin says aloud
"Agreed." adds Korbis

The two soon resume the discussion of the loser of the bet and the wagon moves on. The road splits and the wagon turns north towards an impossibly large tree in the distance.

The Tree of Parting looms ahead of you as late afternoon approaches. Reaching higher than any castle spire you have ever seen. Its great canopy stretches out and seems to help support the sky itself. You can see lights, torches, magic or lanterns is hard to tell, but they shine about the upper branches. As the party draws closer, you begin to make out structures built and blended artfully into the great boughs.

About the base are dozens of the wagons from the caravan and nearly 100 beast of burden. People from the caravan are everywhere, music cascades from above. Now that you are here you can see the lights you noticed to be Fairie Fire. Lighting branches, boughs, leaves and stair rails in a myriad of colors. Singing can be heard from above as well as about the base of the tree. A great celebration is in full swing and despite the great numbers of of people, still the tree dwarfs you all.

A large ghostly visage of a clean shaven man in his late thirties to early forties floats about 10' above the ground. His hair pulled back into a long ponytail. He wears a pair of sparkling earrings and a necklace of various charms. A trio of geometric cut gems float about his head as well. He appears to be wearing a tunic with a vestment or mantle across his shoulders. At the mid chest, the image falls into a smoky vapor trailing down to a censor upon the ground. The image contains no color other than shades of blue. Turning slightly to note your approach, he smiles and greets you warmly. "Welcome to The Tree of Parting and Chancers Club Ball."

The Tree of Parting - Co DM Dan K
Wednesday August 13th, 2014 8:16:39 PM

As some take in this natural wonder of the Wold, The Tree of Parting, Atlas steps up to the magical bust. It makes no response other than to welcome you. It apparently is a static greeting only. Mack begins to try ad make his way towards the trunk and one of the great staircases that hang from above. Before Mack gets too far. Mack does notice that there seem to be games and gambling at this Chancers Club Ball as well

Coming to the party are several men wearing the insignia of The Mailed Fist. One holds a hand up and shouts for your attention as well as waves another to head up the stairs across the crowd. "You made it!" he calls, surprise and happiness both in his voice. He and two others cut their way through the crowd and are upon you in a few moments. "By Alemi and the gods you made it" He grasps any extending arm he can and shakes it vigorously.

Others in the party at ground level begin to circulate the story that the presumed dead men of the wagon left behind were in fact very much alive. Shouts of Huzzah! Hail! and Prost! erupt about the area.

Noting you are hurt, a call for a healer also is taken up. "For the Valiant of the Fist, A Healer!"

"When you feel up to it," the man from The Mailed Fists shouts over the roar of the crowd, "You need to get to TreeTops Inn and see Captain VonKlempt" His arm pointing skyward nearly 500' to a building in the great tree.

Caius, peering over the gathering crowd, observed the returning group that had once been separated from the main caravan. They are alive, he thinks. Yes, there is balance in all things. Had they not returned... No. He would not let his mind wander that path. Gargul demanded balance, and lives unnecessarily wasted on frivolous appointments would have most certainly demanded a sacrifice. But whose? No matter. They have returned. And no rebalancing is called for. "I am a healer," he calls. "And I have been waiting for your return." As the crowd parts, Caius bows his head. "My name is Caius Graycloak. I serve Gargul, he of the book and staff. Please -- if you will allow it -- I humbly offer my services to you."

"Wow now that's a tree!" I exclaim as we approach, The Tree of Parting. "We made it!" I thank everyone of the group. "Without you all we would never have made it. I think we all owe our lives to each other. We did work good together as a unit!"

"Atlas we should sell off the treasure if we can and divide up the gold with everyone, I know we could use the money to resupply and pick up some much need equipment (healing kits, potions) and depending on how much we get even see if we could find or pick up some magic items to help us in future. We need to find the shops?"

When the human approaches I wonder who he is, then he declares himself as a healer and gives his name. I stratch out my hand in greeting "Well met Caius. I am Crosseye and I think we all could use the service of a healer. We did do as best we could with our knowledge but will not be as skill as one like you! Thank you."

" Atlas we could use a skill healing in out little group for any future adventure or tasks we should try to in list him to out group?"

To the group " The man from The Mailed Fists said we need to see Captain VanKlempt, I think we should go report in to him asap."

To Caius " We need to report in first then I am all yours for you healing, You can come with us if you like"

With that I look at the rest of the group and start the track up to where the man pointed the Captain was, The TreeTops Inn.

"Hi Caius! Glad to have your services. I think most of us could use a little healing."

Turning to the rest of the group... "Sounds like we have a plan... healing, divvying up treasure, going to see the Captain, and seeing what we can purchase here. A healing kit is definitely on the top of my list."

A feeling of pride overwhelms Atlas. He didn't really contemplate what would happen when they arrived at the Tree. Healing and finding a bed to rest, those were the only thoughts on his mind. The welcome from the Mailed Fists and others in the crowd left him speechless for a moment.

Once he caught himself, Atlas shakes the man's hand and gives him a big smile and words of gratitude. He then turns to Caius and responds, "Caius, your assistance is greatly appreciated. Please see to the others first. If you find that you have the energy when they are healed then I would welcome your god's touch.

Turning to Crosseye, "I couldn't have said it better myself. Would you and Lilith mind dividing up the gold and collecting the loot that anyone is willing to part with? We'll hit the shops together, as I'm sure we could all use some supplies. Why don't we head up and see the Captain once you have it sorted and we'll get the run down from him on what the best shops for the Mailed Fists are. I'm sure he'll want us prepped if we're continuing the journey. Then again, we should probably talk about that as a group. I don't know what everyone's plans are."

"Yes," Caius says, looking up at the tree towering over them. "Let us attend Captain VanKlempt first, but after," he turns to Atlas, recognizing him as the group's leader, "I shall heal you with what powers I have and according to Gargul's will."

Perhaps it is these adventurers, Caius thinks. Perhaps they are the reason for my return? He contemplates Crosseye, Mack, Lilith and then Atlas. Am I so grim? Can I not even manager a simple human conversation, a living dialogue? Will they accept that? Will they accept me? Then, as if speaking to someone else, Is this your will? It must be. But what is certainty but imbalanced confidence? The gray, Lord, the gray. That is where I must live.

Lilith smirks and nod her head "I'd gladly help with the gold" her tail wags happily before she turns to Caius "As you may have guessed, I am Lilith. Lilith Parrim." she extends one hand towards him.

Hi guys! I'm back from Vacation!! Thank you to Ian for covering me while I was gone
