And now for something different... (Co-DM JonathanT)
Friday July 18th, 2014 12:20:08 AM

DM JT OOC: I just noticed I hadn't changed the Module Title and Scene Name from the last one. DOH!

Sesha [AC 26 /15 Touch/23 Flat] | HP 138/84+22 | CMD 19][See Invisibility]  d20+22=30 ; d100+8=13 ; d100=9

"I don't know enough to know whether Hook City is defending itself against a parasite or if it's devouring those who need it. I need to talk to Little Spirit."

Sesha has had enough contemplating. She has a few tasks she sets about doing. First and foremost, she needed to decide what she truly thought was best and would please Serenbeth the most.

Now that she knew her Little Spirit, she could feel the dynamics of their relationship changing. It's not that Little Spirit demanded more, but rather she sought to give more freely to her allied god.

Making her way upstairs, she prepares herself and casts a Divination spell.

"Little Spirit, can you help me? I need it pretty bad right now. There's so many things happening here and I don't know which direction I would rather be pulled. I know you know everything I know, but here's what is happening. Hook City is reeling. There are a lot of people here who are trying to live happy lives and that got smashed with the Chit Machine I put to rest.

Do we seek the Teucri to revive the guardian? Is it okay to re-subjugate it? I had my fill of that with the Ga'alin! Do we destroy everything left that the Teucri left to Hook City? Do we move to support the city officially, or help the people of Mudtown?

I say "we", my Serenbeth.. not asking what is best for the Iron Adventurers, but what best serves your will."

When all the guests leave Beri clears his breakfast dishes and returns to discuss their options.
I mentioned this back when we had two options, but now that we have four or five I really think we should head to the seers again and see what their visions say. Odd our we will be just as confused, but it may be our only real chance to get an feel for how all the pieces fit together... the really confusing thing about all this is that as far as we know EVERYONE we met tonight was telling the complete truth.

Restlin agrees with Kyan. "Of course there are good people in Mudtown. I'm just tired of everyone's automatically assuming that they, as a whole, are a bunch of good-ol', salt-of-the-Wold folks being oppressed by Hook City. That situation is not nearly as cut and dry as it's being made out."

Anyway, Restlin's not sure how to proceed. There's no clear best choice and any decision they make will leave good people in the lurch and cause issues down the line.

However, his gut is telling him to go check out what he can about this Teucari lead. He's not about to advocate destroying the remaining artifacts in the city without some serious, SERIOUS proof. That means agreeing to aid the first group that came to him last night.

The magepriest also feels he's done way too much talking lately & decides it's a good time to disappear upstairs & prepare his daily spells. He's actually not too pleased that the gentleman from Mudtown referred to him as the leader of the Iron Adventurers. That title involves way more trouble than it's worth. He decides to let everyone else decide how to handle this, jumping in only if they reach an impasse.

Garret continues to ponder what is going on. He realizes that this is a turning point for the city. He sees the IA moving in different directions, and decides that he wants to find a way to unite them, at least in some small way. While the others start to separate and think, he slips off to find a friendly blacksmith that he had talked to quite a little while ago...

"My desire is only for harmony. Granted, I have only been here for a short while, however, I believe there is ongoing tension between Hook and Mudtown. If I were to delve into things I suspect both would have played some part in this in the past. Neither side would be innocent.

If they can be united by the current crisis, then fantastic. Let's see if the Mudtown people can help Hook with mining and fashioning a new currency.

The recent incident with the Chit Machine shows that Teucri artifacts are open to tampering. Should the same thing occur to the hooks holding the bridge, or to the memory stones, it could be the end of Hook City as we know it. This would have a disastrous effect on both Hook City and Mudtown. Whether they like it or not, they rely on each other for survival. Cementing that relationship makes sense to me"

"I'm for agreeing to stay in the city and help out. keep it and Mudtown out of trouble. if our word can help with getting Mudtown miners in to help move te city along all the better for everyone." Kyan gives his piece before finally going to reclaim his things, as simple as they were, and move them into a room of the tower.

Just as the Inspector and the Sgt. start out the door, Bosk asks the final question:
'is any plan in place for a temporary currency or restoring the Chit machine?'

"I assure you there are plans for a temporary monetary system. But I'm not on that committee so I don't know any details. Nor am I on a committee investigating the restoration of the Chit Machine, if there is one, so I can't help you there either. Sorry."

And now for something different... (Co-DM JonathanT)  d100=38 ;
Monday July 21st, 2014 11:55:33 PM

It is noon but such a late night and early visitors have bumped breakfast to lunch instead.

Sesha is not going to wait to go see Seers, she has some divine (sort of) divination of her own. She goes upstairs, makes meticulous preparations to communicate with [Little Spirit.

Preparations made, including precautions not to be disturbed, she sits down and casts her Divination spell.

DM Note: Per spell description, Divination provide you with a useful piece of advice in reply to a question concerning a specific goal, event, or activity that is to occur within 1 week.

Base chance for a correct Divination is 70%+ 1%/caster level, max 90%. I make that 81% then. Is that right?

Divination roll - DM eyes only: Highlight to display spoiler: { 38 }

Sesha's spell cast and question(s) asked, she goes into a trance-like state. Although for her friends, the time lapse of the trance seemed pretty much instantaneous, to her it seemed much, much longer.

Sesha only: Highlight to display spoiler: {Sesha's spirit is carried through fog-like vapors that an inward intuition tells her it represents the Future. She finally reaches a clearing and in the center is a large bowl of water on a pedestal, a giant bird bath. Birds jump into it and splash around but when they come out, they come out different than when they jumped in. After a few moments they all fly away and a giant Raven lands on the edge and looks directly at Sesha.

"Time can be murky when faced with so many choices. The choice you make, regardless of which, will change you. Each choice has its own rewards and its own penalties. Which reward is more important to you, Sesha? The results of your choice, My Dear, is too far fetching to forsee its result. The future of Hook City is only partly dependent on your choice, but that Future is hidden to even I, your Spirit Sister, until a choice is made and you act upon it. You must follow your Heart, for only then can you be True to Yourself, and that is what matters."

The giant Raven spreads its wings and With a 'woooosh' vanishes into the fog.

Sesha is then brought forward to the birdbath and sees the five representatives but the water is murky. However she does vaguely see the bottom of the birdbath and a blurry symbol etched into the bottom. Then she suddenly wakes up.
}

Beri pops the suggestion that they should try the Seers again, even though their 'help' may only muddle things up even more. Point is, as far as they know, EVERYONE they met was telling the truth. The Seers may give a clue, slight as it might be, but enough to tip the balance one way or another.

Restlin continues the discussion over Mudtown and the merits of its citizens. He is quite aware that there are good people in Mudtown, but he's tired of them being portrayed as Victims every time. It's not as clear-cut as that.

Restlin knows this discussion will go back and forth and suggests a visit to the city library where one can read several History of Hook City tomes and one or two unbiased Mudtown histories. (DM JT's Knowledge Local check for Restlin)

The Mage-Priest does not know which choice to make but has the intuition to know that regardless of which one they make, it will leave the other parties in the 'lurch' and this may cause issues down the road. However his gut feeling is to check out the Teucri lead. This he keeps to himself and informs the group that he is too close to the issue to make a decision and leaves it up to the others, then heads upstairs to prepare his daily spells.

Garret ponders the choices and decides that his goal is to keep the IA united in their decision. He ponders how to do this while seeking out the blacksmith friend he contracted to make the Iron Adventurers' emblems.

DM JT: I'm add-libbing here because i've not gone back and found the original post. :}

The Blacksmith is hard at work despite the current events. He stops his pounding and wipes his brow with a dirty hanky before extending a hand in greeting. "Garret. Good to see you. I have your order ready. Give me a moment."

He stuffs a length of iron into a vat of water and it hisses and steams.

"An order for a gate. Gotta keep busy and keep my mind off things. Perhaps I'll get paid, perhaps not, but I can't stand to be idle. Let's see here... Over here." He leads Garret to a cabinet and pulls open a drawer. Neatly placed inside are the emblems Garret ordered. "Take a look. Make sure they are as you directed."

DM JT: do you remember the price?

Bosk asks the Inspector if there are plans for temporary currency.

From answer in previous DM post:
The Inspector answers Bosk.
"I assure you there are plans for a temporary monetary system. But I'm not on that committee so I don't know any details. Nor am I on a committee investigating the restoration of the Chit Machine, if there is one, so I can't help you there either. Sorry."

Katinka just wants Harmony, specifically between Hook City and Mudtown. If there is a way to do that, she's all for it. Obviously these tensions didn't crop up over night. Her argument seems to favor joining with Mudtown and perhaps enabling a lasting mutually beneficial association between the two.

DM JT: correct me if I'm wrong on this.:

Kyan also seems to favor accepting Mudtown's offer in hopes their Word can help unite the two. Seeing and unattended Turkey Leg, he trades it for a Sausage Robe.
DM JT: I hope you know what a Sausage Robe is 'cause I don't. LOL :)

Beri finally manages to finish his breakfast and agrees that seeing the Seers won't really hurt things.

DM JT for Bosk: I did not keep up with the Fast Forge Feat discussion. You might shoot Cayzle, SteveK, or Jerry and e-mail or ask on one of the boards. For now at least, taking one day at a time, you can busy yourself with crafting if you are not interested in going to the Seers or doing something else.

So, while Noon-O'clock chimes in the City's clock tower, the Iron Adventurers start their discussions in earnest about which path to take. In their own way a decision will be made in due time and by some means a consensus will be made.

The silence in the square is heavy, as if waiting in great anticipation on the decided course of action.

Garret nods and walks over to the drawer, taking a peek inside. He sees the shiny and clear emblems looking even better than he had imagined. He gingerly takes one in his hand and says, "Oh yes, these are absolutely perfect, even more than I had hoped for. Thank you so very much!"

He turns back to the smith and continues, "We had not spoken of a price, but today even if we had, I imagine that it would have been in chits. With Hook City in turmoil, I know not what you would seek. If you want gold, I can certainly pay in that manner. If you would prefer precious gems, I am sure we can find something that will work for you. Or, if you prefer, you can wait until such time as the economy settles down, and I assure you that I will pay you your fair share in whatever currency comes out of this situation. You have my word that you will be paid fairly in whatever manner, or time, that you choose."

OOC:
No price was set for the items. We hadn't even come up with a material actually. They were to be small emblems that could be used as a broach, pin, or attached to armor or a shield, I suppose a few inches tall. We wanted a metal that would shine, but not easily tarnish, but would also be solid and not wear.

As Bosk finishes up his crafting for the day he chimes in. I really want to look into repairing the Chit machine. Just think of the possibility of meeting a Tecuri or learning the secrets behind how their devices work. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Sesha [AC 26 /15 Touch/23 Flat] | HP 138/84+22 | CMD 19][See Invisibility]
Tuesday July 22nd, 2014 12:05:07 PM

Sesha comes downstairs, looking a little worn. She hears Bosk and Katinkas back and forth, and the finds a place to sit after getting some juice.

"Are some of you still going to the Seers? I think I can save you the time. This is one of those times when the Gods gather around to see what us silly mortals do to shape the fates of the world we live in. Serenbeth made it fairly clear to me that we are to proceed in according to our true desires. And I made it fairly clear to her that my true desires are in line with what she would have asked of her Priestesses when they were still around."

Sesha takes a deep breath and hugs Pot-pot, not quite sure if she's going to upset Restlin.

"Serenbeth has given me a nudge. There are a lot of children in Mudtown that are abused and mistreated, and a lot with nothing to give them much chance at a future. Hook City, regardless of the chit machine, is still a fairly safe place. I want the children "out there" to wind up "in here".

Her confidence bolstered by her divination, Sesha speaks more clearly.

"I think we should help the delegation from Mudtown. Not because they are victims of Hook City, but because they simply need us the most I think. And there's nothing stopping us from helping Mud-town from within the city walls, so we can likely aid Auslander at the same time. "

Tuesday July 22nd, 2014 3:12:37 PM

Restlin nods as he listens to Sesha. "When you say 'help the delegation,' are you saying convince the powers of Hook City to allow them to provide the raw materials for coinage as our guest this morning asked, or did you have something else in mind?

"Far be it from me to say we shouldn't ensure children have a shot at a good life, let's just be clear on the actual actions we're to take."

Sesha [AC 26 /15 Touch/23 Flat] | HP 138/84+22 | CMD 19][See Invisibility]
Tuesday July 22nd, 2014 8:41:27 PM

Sesha grins.

"Sorry. The Drow conditioned me to call anyone needing something a "delegation", whether its a prince or a traveling flea circus. I mean that I think we should go ahead and tell our previous guest from the Commoners Party Against Chits that we will help him."

She pauses.

"I agree with Garret that the Chit Machine is now a permanent target. For the Chancers to have so skillfully eluded every trap.. they probably could do it again. I don't think we can risk restoring him, no matter how wonderful meeting the Teucri would be.

People Against Chits just want even trade and to lose their stigma as untouchables. They are willing to help. We could push this agenda from within the walls of Hook City, which would also let us help our friend Auslander."

She thinks for a moment.

"But not once can we let the conversation turn into a lecture on the tyranny of Hook City nobility and their trampling of poor Mud Town. That emasculates one side and paints the other unfairly as uncaring and even cruel, and neither are true."

Restlin (Carl) -- AC: +15/+6/+12 CMD: 22 HP: 76/89 (Spells) Luck Points: 3
Tuesday July 22nd, 2014 9:56:28 PM

Restlin continues nodding. "Ok. We're getting somewhere; that's good. Here's the issue as I see it. Asking Hook City citizenry to accept Mudtown folks is...let's see. What's a good comparison...ah, it would be like the Ga'al worshiping orcs you lived with taking in a wandering tribe of non-violent Flower worshipers because they could really give charm the place up.

"Which is not to say it's a bad idea! We just need to go into this with a realistic idea of how it will go down. How are we going to talk this up?"

*sorry guys, but I really would rather hear what they have to say BEFORE we make the decision ;)
I'll chime in with something more concrete after

And now for something different... (Co-DM JonathanT)
Tuesday July 22nd, 2014 11:21:38 PM

Garret is pleased with the new shiny emblems.

"I had to use adamantite as the base metal to keep the shiny sheen and from your reputation of enduring adverse elemental conditions and other incidental occupational hazards. I'm glad you like them."

He rubs his chin a moment then grins, "Payment in gold is just fine. Let's go to my office and figure this out." He heads over to a worktable littered with tools of his trade and sits down.

DM JT: I'll come up with a figure soon but we can keep things going and pretend it has been agreed upon In-Game. Did you want 8 (the desired number in the party) or the exact number in the group now?

Meanwhile, back at HQ the IA engage in some discussions regarding their next operational plans. There are mixed feelings as to which, if any, of the 5 visitors request they should accept. This exemplifies the varied nature of each Iron Adventurer. Such a mixture is usually a good thing.

Sesha returns from having a little pow-wow with Serenbeth and is in favor of helping Mudtown out. As she sees it, they are the ones that need help the most.

Bosk is in favor of seeking the Teucri out to see about fixing the Chit Machine. His eyes are focused on the actual possibility of meeting that mysterious race.

Restlin wants to be double sure of the term [i]Help/i] Mudtwon out. He wants clear and precise goals spelled out before they commit to Mudtown so there's no misunderstanding between the IA and Mudtown or the IA and Hook City.

Beri thinks that helping the Mudders out is a good idea but it's a long shot. Knowing Hook City Red Tape Machine (Another Teucri Artifact) well, any agreement between Hook and Mudtown could take many, many months. He decides to go ahead and seek out an oracle from the Seers and heads on out with whoever else wants to go.

DM JT: do you mean the Seers you went to for the oracle about Jump Day or the Seers the City usually relies upon?

The discussions are good and at times philosophical. The IA certainly don't want to draw one out of the hat and go with it.

Turning to his friends he says, Teucri curses, Tuecri artifacts, it seems to me we must find out more about the Teucri if we are to make an informed decision. I also want to seek out Capon to determine if leading the protection groups will be a permanent position or a temporary one. If it is permanent then accepting or being placed under someone else will greatly impact our lives ere. I also feel we need to make arrangements to protect our wards if we leave. I suggest we contact our friends, the Children of Chaos, to see if they can help us out. They are some of the few people I feel we can trust.

When the group is ready Bosk will seek out Capon and the former CoC.

Decision Time Neareth.. (Co-DM JonathanT)
Thursday July 24th, 2014 12:19:33 AM

The IA continue their discussions as to which way to go while Garret completes an errand.

Several favor helping out Mudtown but there are some doubts the IA would be of much help. Some want assurances that the IA won't force their hand on either party. Beri is about to go see the City Seers but after seeing that this would offend Sesha, decides not to. Katinka prefers to rely on the wisdom of the veterans of Hook City. Bosk would like to seek out the Children of Chaos and see if they can help in any way.

But how close is the IA of picking a side? Or can the IA pick more than one side (and keep it a secret)?

With Restlin and Katinka preferring to leave the decision up to the others, that narrows it down to 5 IA members. Of course, they could just choose to not pick a side and see what happens... :)

Sesha shakes her head.

"That's what I was saying Beriothian. I asked Serenbeth if there was any special concern and what best served her whim. She said that right now there was no clear answer. There are times when the gods gather to see what the mortals do next.. shaping events.. and this is one of them. Serenbeth would have told me if there was a dangerous curse threatening Hook City.

Still.

Maybe one of us could meet with the crazy old man and see if he can shed more light on the idea of the curse. I doubt there is anything to it than his own perception. To be honest, I think I can best identify with the man. I have an .. affinity.. for the outcast and unusual. At the same time, my diplomacy skills could be helpful dealing with Hook aristocrats."

Garret looks around and sees that Beri hasn't left. He asks everyone to join him in the dining room (or whatever room they have where everyone can gather).

"Thank you all for joining me here. I know that we have an important decision ahead of us, but for now, something else to thing about.

"I know that many of us have really been thrust together, and some have been here, as Iron Adventurers, much longer than others of us. We thank you for taking us in, and allowed me, and us, to be a part of this wonderful group. As we were starting to get more well known around town, I thought we could use a way that we could have something together, and something that can identify us. To that end, I met with an artist and a blacksmith, and came up with something I do hope each of you will enjoy."

He lifts up a small bag that clanks with metal as he places it on the table. He looks up, smiles brightly, and says, "I present you with," he reaches into the bag and pulls out a small item, "The Iron Adventurers!"

He holds up a metal emblem

The emblem is about 4 inches wide and about 3 inches tall. It is shiny and polished. Garret continues, "It can be attached as a belt buckle, or on a shield, or even used as a brooch. I thought you all might like them, and we could wear them around, as a sort of ID in town as well. And who knows, at this point with the city the way it is, they might even be more useful in influencing people."

He looks from one face to another, "What do you think?"

By the powers this is a nice piece of work. Thank you, Garret!" The magepriest proudly pins the emblem on his robe, right next to his WLA badge.

"Right. I agree we need to brush up on Teucari lore with what little time we have. If you folks want to hunt down our crazy ex-treasurer, go for it. I'll be doing research the old fashioned way in the meantime."

Garret takes the opportunity while all are gathered to pull forth his surprise gift to the Iron Adventurers. A bag of emblems made of adamantine to withstand the certain 'abuse' to come. They were crafted my a Master Crafstman and are of extreme quality in every detail. But the most notable thing about them is that no matter how one wishes to display it, either on a cloak, or on helmet, or shield, the emblem magically adapts to that method. One of the benefits of living in a very magical city with highly gifted craftsmen.

With the City Clock hitting the bell once, 1 of the clock is announced throughout the city. Two ideas spring forth and set two groups moving.

Restlin searches his city knowledge for the best place to dig up some Teucri lore.

Apart from the Treasury which is bound to have something as it seems to have just about everything, there is the Library in Magic City. Other possibilities are each Temple's repertoir of tomes. The less likely to draw attention are the Temples. The IA has built a good relationship with the Temple of Ma'ab and has done a great service for it in trying to retrieve Ma'ab's Cauldron. The most likely to hit pay dirt is the Library at Magic City or the Treasury. The Treasury at this point has a constant mob around it. The Library in Magic City requires a Membership that the Council of Mages and Sages control. The are very picky. But they also cater to the Nobles and Elites of Hook City, so, considering the current events, one might be able to weasel their way in under the right pretext.

Sesha suggest seeking out Socraterius to find out more about this Curse. Katinka offers to join her. Two work (or fight) better than one. On the other hand, Katinka followed the man and at least knows where to start their search.

Therefore these four set out. Others follow as they wish or stay put. Anrete turns over to get his back a good tan. Garret places Anrete's Iron Adventurer Emblem on the barbarian's back to leave a white spot and freak Anrete out.

Katinka informs Sesha that Socraterius wandered around a bit then ended up in Labor Town and entered the Belching Liontaur tavern.

Restlin heads on out, pondering which option to try his luck with. Bosk thinks it a good idea too and follows.

OOC: The man I think Tink and Sesha are after is Bartholomew - the guy that ate all the biscuits :) Crazy Socraterius might be next on the list though

What would be the best way to find this man? The representative of the "Commoner's Party Against Chits"? It was late. Would the gates between Mud and Hook be open at this hour? Well, since the gates are shut at the moment with the current dilemma, chances are that Bartholomew would have sought refuge somewhere in Hook. And he didn't appear to have much in the way of money (then again, who in Hook does now, right?).

Tink tries to think of the cheapest tavern between the IA tower and the Mud City gates. It is likely the man they are after can be found there (Knowl Local: 24)

On entering the tavern, Tink looks about to try and find the man, all the while trying to get a fix on the crowd. Do they blame the IA for the current state of things? Are they looking hostile? (Perception: 40, Sense Motive: 36)

Sesha leaves a message with Anrete before heading out.

"If those guys who want us to revive the Chit Machine come back around, tell them sorry, but there's too much going on in Hook right now for us to leave. If Mr. Bartholomew returns, make him some frog stew and keep him entertained until we get back? Thanks big guy!"

"Woah there, lady. Let's not go burning bridges before we do our homework," he says after Sesha instructs Anrete to turn away the unpleasant gentlemen. "They won't be here until this evening. We should all be back by then to make a decision."

Restlin decides that the Library in Magic City is the way to go. He's not touching the treasury right now unless he has to. He grabs their official Hook City "these guys are legit" paperwork and heads out the door (with Bosk?).

However, he feels it important to make a pit stop at the temple of Wardd. Both as an admittedly lackluster priest and upcoming young Mendicant, he feels it's important to make sure everything's ok.

Throwing open the doors, the young priest bellows out, "Everyone ok in here?" He'll address any issues he can help with. Before he leaves, he'll ask (loudly) if anyone has anything interesting about the Teucri.

Then, it's off to the Library. For the 20th time in the past two days, he wishes Zeoll & his golden tongue were here. He takes a moment to cast Eagle's Splendor on himself before he's arrived at the Library.

He confidently walks up to the front desk, guard, or whomever is stopping him from accessing all that sweet, sweet knowledge. "Good morning, Sir(or ma'am)! I'm Restlin the Wizard of the Iron Adventurers." He pushes their official writ forward. "We've been approached by several requests for assistance regarding the latest to-do with the chits going awry, but frankly we're at a loss as to how to proceed. What I would just LOVE is to be able to do some research here in your Library. I know you have strict rules here and I would never dream of asking you to bend them just to satisfy my curiosity, but I do hope you'll make an exception for the greater good here.

"What I'm trying to say is, I...we need your help. Can we please work something out?"

Sesha, Beri and Katinka head to the Belching Lion, and Sesha is glad to have them with her. She finds a place to pin her new brooch, and wears it with mixed measure.

She hadn't reported in to It'lal since her strange diplomatic breakthrough in Bryn Baranz, where the Chaos Bell literally connected the tunnels of the mining colony to the head office of a Drow noble. She felt strange branding herself a third time.

Her tattoos were a clear mark of a barbarian upbringing, just as her missing eye marked her as a scarred Blood Witch of Serenbeth. Her skin marked her blood-kin, the Drow. Now she was an Iron Adventurer too? She had technically only signed on with them until she could discover more about Pot-pot, Serenbeth, and Little Spirit. Now she was embroiled in the affairs of Hook City.

"Katinka, I'm glad I'm not the only one new to Hook City. It's less scary when you have someone else with you checking it out for the first time. Know anything about this place, Beri?"

She keeps an eye out for the old man, or anyone looking at them dangerously.

I'm afraid I haven't made it down to the Belching Lion yet, so I don't know much about the tavern itself. As for this general area, it'ss the poorest part of the entire city. It might be similar to the merchants quarter in other major cities you've been to. Strangely enough, that could be a good thing these days, as a result of it being a lower class part of town it's the only place in the city where foreign coins are accepted as readily as chits. It's the one area that will be slower to feel the economic chaos the rest of the city has been thrown into.

DM JT OOC: sorry for the delay. Some of this stuff is not in the module. :}

DM JT IC:

The IA split up into three groups.

One stays home to be available in case anyone else 'shows' up.

The second group goes looking for Socraterius, hoping to find out more about this 'curse'.

The third group go looking for information, place of choice, the Library in Magic City.

Not much going on at home. The Tower is quiet. Too quiet. The usual hubbub of the square is absent. The air feels heavy, like just before a terrible thunderstorm. It even feels hot and stifling, but if one owned that magical device called a Temperature-Variance-Modulator-Ballance-Device (not a Teucri artifact, just a gnomish invention), they'd know the temperature is the same as always.

Socraterius was last seen, some 12 hours ago, entering the Belching Liontaur in Labortown. So that's where Sesha, Katinka, Beriothian, and Kyan head to. Getting to Labortown was easy enough. Finding the tavern was a different matter.

Labortown is slightly more active than the Tower Square, yet the mood is about the same. Regardless of your income status, Uncertainty of the future is a mood killer.

Despite Katinka having followed the man there, it was night, it was dark, the man weaved around as bad as a drunken sailor. The place looks different during the day. After a few Information Gathering events they locate the said tavern.

Sense Motive DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: { the inquiry of the whereabouts of the tavern is meet with a nervous 'don't know' or 'must be over that way, don't go through there much.'}

It isn't a big place, but none in Labortown are. Low ceiling, long common tables making the most of the space, smokey, and stale smell. The low murmur of the dozen scruffy patrons die immediately at the sight of the strangers. A toothy, but well endowed barmaid approaches, "Whadya having boys 'n girls?"

It is easy for the IA to sense tension, but this is Labortown and the locals look upon all others with some suspicion anyway, even more so now. No one by the description of Socraterious appears to be in at this time.

In better parts of Hook City, Restlin and Bosk stop by the Temple of Ward to check on things. Priests have a way of doing better than most in difficult times and the priest no duty assure Restlin all is well. Then off to the Magic City Library.

The 'Golden Toungue of Zeol' (not a Teucri Artifact) is not with Restlin but still traveling with Zeol. Even so, the papers that the IA were given by Inspector Auslander prove enough to let the two into the main foyer. If you thought it was quiet outside, it is even more so inside.
The footsteps of the two, specially Bosks hooves, echo loudly enough to wake the dead, so to speak.
Restlin, with a fresh dose of Eagle's Splendor tries to sweet-talk the attendant at the front desk. It does help that she's a woman.
It doesn't help that she's as dedicated to the sanctity of a quiet library. She eyes Bosk as she looks over the paper work and listens to Restlin's request.

"Unusual papers, but seems in order. Just a moment." She pulls out a large, heavy book and flips through some pages. She finds the page she looking for and with Restlin's paperwork in hand scrutinizes it and something on in the book. She then nods and hands the papers back to Restlin.

"The Librarian in Chief is the one that can help you." She picks up a piece of paper, writes a note, folds it into something that looks birdlike, blows on it and flicks it into the air. It takes off and flutters away and down a hall. A few moments later they hear... well, nothing, as an old man comes hobbling, cane in hand, down the hall, piece of paper in hand. The cane should be making sounds as it hits the stone floor but it doesn't.

Despite his age, the Chief Librarian's voice is strong. "The Iron Adventurers? Special request? What's this all about?"

The halfling gives a nod to Sesha. She seemed to have a way with strange folk. Best let her do the talking.

Diplomacy: 17 (again?)

"The Iron Adventurers you say? I've heard of your lot. Looking for information on the Teucri? The Treasury is your best place, but there are some tomes here you can look at." he says after looking over Restlin's papers again.

"Walk this way, please. We keep those tomes in a secure place."

The Librarian in Chief takes the two down one way, across another, through a third and ends up in a small corridor that ends at a small door. He waves his hand and the door creaks open. Inside this small, closet sized room is a small table and one bookshelf. There are three large volumes on the bookshelf.

"Put these cloth gloves on when you handle them. Close the door when you leave. Good Luck."
At that, he hobbles on back towards somewhere.

Bosk finds a pair of gloves his size and puts them on as he helps Restlin page through the books looking for more information on the Teucri, reveling in the opportunity to learn more about such a little known race. As he finishes reading the page he is on he turns to Restlin, After we are through here, do you want to see if they will let us check things out at the treasury. Perhaps we can add the Librarian in Chief to our list of references to get in?

Restlin puts on the cloth gloves and they fit perfectly. There are several other pairs and Bosk looks at one and scratches his head. They seem too small, but when trying one on, they slip on perfectly.

All of Resltin's vast knowledge is put to task as he flips through the pages and proves rather futile. The writing is in a strange language. Detecting Magic shows the gloves to have a slight magical aura but the tomes themselves do not. The Teucri language is so archaic and foreign as to be undecipherable without
a key.

Bosk has the same result with the one he looks through.

DM JT: this didn't take long, say 1 hour for a careful scan of the pages to verify each written page is in Teucri. I am reminded of the Star Trek Next Gen. episode where the Enterprise encounters a new race who's language is so different that the Universal Translators could not translate. That's the Teucri language.

Garret tires of Anrete's loud snoring that is keeping the birds at bay and decides to make some tea.

Katinka remains quiet but watching, wondering about the casual treatment of one that used to be someone of import at the Treasury.

Sesha agrees that the description fits the profile of Srocraterius and assures the patrons that the old man isn't in trouble. On the contrary, she tells them she needs his help.

Kyan backs Sesha up by adding that the old man had come to them in the middle of the night acting a little crazy and the Iron Adventurers aren't the king to brush off someone in need.

Beri adds that Crazy-Eye left them a little confused and wondered if they knew a trick to get the old man to focus and not ramble.

Much of the room gets a good laugh at such a ridiculous idea of trying to make any sense out of what Crazy-Eye has to say. However as the others are distracted by the guffaws, the one slightly better dressed, nudges Sesha under the table with his foot and puts a finger to the side of is nose.

Restlin frowns. I mean, on one hand, these are amazing books! It's a rare treat to get to look through them.

On the other...he has no idea what he's looking at. He tries the following, in order:

1. Cast read magic & try again to read these books.
2. Wrack his brain about what is known about this language (has ANYONE deciphered it?): Knowledge, arcana is 33.
3. Ask Bosk if he has any ideas.
4. Ask the nice older gentlemen who let them in if he knows anything. Either way, Restlin thanks him genuinely and asks if there's any chance they could return should they find some way to translate these works.

After those options are exhausted, Restlin will turn to Bosk. "I think we should check the Treasury's archives as well, even if it means dealing with the mob." If Bosk is in agreeance, he'll cast Overland Flight on himself, then cast an extended Fly spell on Bosk (overland flight has a range of personal). "That should get us over their heads, at least. We should move quickly, though. You have..." Restlin does math before spitting out "14 minutes before that wears off."

On the way there, he'll chat with his oldest friend.

"You know, you're pretty much the only original member of the Iron Adventurers left. Beri was there from the beginning, but my goodness that boy's changed so much. Was Kyan there at the beginning? I forget. Anyway, just something I noticed. I wish Zeoll was here. He always had great ideas and knew how to handle people...well, unless that handling involved Calm Emotions, am I right? Hey, remember when we ended up killing that other protection group after he used it that one time? That was a hoot..."

The cleric flips through the books looking for a key of some sort. He also runs his gloved hand down to the page to see if the glove to see if it has any magical effect ad casts detect magic on the glove to determine what magic the glove has. If al else fails he will ask the Chief librarian if he has a key or way of translating the material. Perhaps some enchanted reading glasses. DM JT to Sesha:
You do realize that there are half a dozen others sitting all around your little group. Casting the Cantrip will be noticed unless you can disguise it somehow and roll a Bluff check.
I understand you are counting on the singing, if someone does (at least Beri started), but there's no guarantee that all or any at the table won't notice it.

The Message spell is V, S, and F (copper wire)
If you can cast non-verbal, that helps, but you'll need a good Sleigh-of-hand and some luck to pull it off without anyone else in front of you noticing.

Once you roll your Bluff and Katinka, Beri, and Kyan can roll Aid Another to help distract the folk, I can then Roll the Anti-Bluff check and see what happens.

There are no musicians present and Beri starts singing a-capelo. Beri needs to roll a Perform check to see if any others join in.

Part II:
DM JT OOC: to answer Bosk's question - Can we take Teucri as a known language? the DM has to pick himself up from the floor after a good long laugh. :)

Sorry, Bosk, you can't take Teucri as a known language, primarily because no one knows it to teach it.

IC: Restlin keeps finding himself at dead ends each time he tries something to figure out how to read the old Teucri tomes. Read Magic is of no help as the writings are not magical. The mage scratches his head and thinks back on what is known about the Teucri language and he is sure no one has ever mentioned knowing anything about it and he recalls that the inability to figure out the Teucri language was Second in the Teucri Unsolved Mysteries booklet published by none other than a certain dignified gentleman by the name of Socraterius.

Restlin seeks out the Chief Librarian who seems annoyed at being disturbed. The old man simply grumbles something about 'expectations of him' but mellows out and explains, "If there was a way to translate the tomes, don't you think we'd have done so centuries ago? I'm sorry it has been a disappointment to you, but many mages of far more experience than you have been trying to decipher the tomes with no success. I felt you needed to see for yourself, rather than just say 'No'. Now you know."

He returns to his 'busy' work.

Restlin's next option is to go to the Treasury and see what he can find there. With a little magical help, both he and Bosk whisk themselves across the skies and land at the main Treasury entrance, between the main doors and a mob gathered there. The door is shut.

The mob, which erupts now and then with shouts of one unrepeatable thing or another, quietens down for a second to see what's up.

A knock at the door brings an attendant escorted by a mechanoid guard.

"Sorry. The Treasury is closed today. If you need something, write it down here on this Visitor's form and it will be evaluated, an appointment time scheduled in accordance with who you need, and a message will be sent to you with the proper Invitation form."

He hands Restlin a sheet of paper with a long list of questions regarding their request on who they seek and what and why.

"Hello beautiful stranger. I've always liked coming to these places, ever since learning they existed. The boring ol' barbarians I grew up with just drank in their huts. So have you something you'd care to share with the rest of us?"

While Beri sings a song about beer and Kyan knocks his beer off the table, the patrons are distracted enough that the others don't notice the spell casting.

The stranger replies 'You won't get much from this lot. Meet me outside in 15 minutes.'

The barmaid just says "Tsk, Tsk, Tsk" in response to Kyan's apologies and with a wave of a hand and a few words, the beer mess vanishes. She takes the empty mug and returns with another full one.

Meanwhile, Restlin and Bosk are not having much luck. Considering the magical nature of Hook City and the mages that live there, if there had been a way to decipher the tomes, it would have been done ages ago. This information is given in a relatively haughty way be the Chief Librarian. The only man to even halfway understand the Teucri, if not their language, was a man by the name of Socraterius, but he mysteriously went mad about a year ago.

Frustrated at the Treasury doors, Restlin thinks of tracking the Inspector down.

DM OOC: I honestly don't remember where Auslander's office is. It may be the Treasury, but more likely another administrative building, so we'll go with that.

Going on a hunch and hope of pure luck, the two head to the Inspector's office. With their papers, they manage to see the inspector without too much delay.

"Ah! So soon! Your decision did not take long at all. Come in. I am glad you have chosen to join the other Protectors in the City's attempt to keep order. Auslander nods his head at Restlin's response but the mage can sense the Inspector's hopes fell a little. Regardless, the Inspector is a tough man and understands.
"Well, it is only that some of the other groups are holding out, for whatever reason, and I thought that with your entrance it would give then an extra incentive to join. They'd not want be on the opposite end of any confrontation." he allows a wise grin.

"The Treasury? Research? Well, as you know, my position there was taken away from me. Otherwise that would not be a problem. Right now I'm just keeping an eye on the crowds outside, but to get inside, so soon, that will take some work. Can't be today. Maybe tomorrow, or the next. The only thing I can do is promise to work on it."

He is polite enough not to ask why, yet.

Bosk suggests tracking down Socraterius, good thing one team is already trying this.

Garret notices his empty mug. He also notices, off in the distance across town some smoke. It soon peters out to a wisp and vanishes altogether. The square, unoccupied for most of the day, now has a few clumps of people here and there hanging around and chatting. Someone tosses an old horseshoe at a peg in the ground but no one else seems to be interested in following up the challenge.

The group at the Belching Liontaur enjoy some more singing, including some of the better known Hook City favorites from the patrons, then pay their tab, in coin, and bid their leave. The barmaid looks at the coins then nods in understanding. She's used to coins only from the Underclass, not Sophisticates like Sesha and Troop.

Katinka quickly hides in a corner, a little shade provided by the late afternoon sun, and turns invisible. The rest move down the street a little ways and idly chat and look into store windows. Labor Town is quiet, not much laboring going on.

Soon the man in question exits the tavern and ambles down the street making to turn into a side street and signing the Sesha and Company to follow.

The Afternoon nears and end (Co-DM JonathanT)
Thursday August 7th, 2014 12:25:34 AM

DM JT OOC: sorry about these real late posts. I've been helping my father-in-law get his new PC up, and of course, it runs Windows 8. Sheesh, what a mess.

Garret notices Anrete stir but it is only to subconsciously swat at a fly and mumble 'not the feather...

Restlin and Bosk think about finding the others and it occurs to them they need some means of long distance communication. The deep gnomes had come up with a small magical mirror that once a gnome looked into it, the mirror could locate him and the owner could talk to him as long as the other had one and had shared it with his friend. It went out of popularity when a number of gnomes walked off chasms or ran into drow or mindflayers completely oblivious as they were so engrossed in their conversations.

Once down the narrow side street the man waits until the others catch up. He whispers just loud enough for those 5' away to hear.
"Look, trying to find Socraterious is rather futile. Since he's gone mad, he's not made any sense. I knew him, sort of, and thought maybe he could get me a job in the Treasury, but that dream is long gone with his insanity. I don't know what he could help you with as he rambles incoherently most of the time. Something happened in the Treasury that sent him off down this path of insanity and the only coherent thing from him is some thing about a Curse. No one's ever understood what it meant as no one's ever heard of it. At least none around here. One of the Temples tried to heal him from the insanity but it didn't work. Seems like all it did was make it worse.

If you still want to look for him, ok, but no ones seem him since last night, and that was a sight. He does have friends, and when he wants to stay hidden, he's near impossible to find. Good luck."
He turns to take his leave.

Garret worries about Anrete awakening thirsty and snatching his beer. The barbarian mumbles something about being chased by giant disembodied poultry legs who's claws have eyeballs.

Restlin and Bosk head home, the minotaur poking into an open shop here and there asking about Communication Mirrors. One old geezer chuckles and says "Your best bet is to visit the Museum and Library of Unusual Guizmos, Magical or Otherwise".

Sesha and Company thank the man for his help and decide to head back home as well. A search for Socraterius will mean applying various methods, some not entirely, er, lawful?

Back at the Iron Tower, the two teams confer with everyone on what they found out, or did not find. Then, as night makes it's entrance by the dipping of the sun past the horizon, two well dressed men knock on the door.

Talking the powers that be in Hook City to work with Mudtown? Especially during a crisis such as this when the City's way of life is challenged? That's just madness. Turning down a chance to learn something about the Teucari AND help the city just seems like such a bad idea.

So while there MAY be something to his Teucri curse, there's not enough reason to abandon Auslander and the city without knowing more."

Then there's the knock.

"And I really distrust those two. Put me in the camp for working from home, so to speak. And while we are doing that there's no reason we can't try and convince Hook City to play nice with the smelters in Mud Town."

Restlin steels himself for the barrage of visitors.

To the two gentlemen who want them to address fixing the machine, he'll reply "I'd be lying if I said part of me wasn't desperate to say yes to you, but we've decided as a group that our efforts and loyalties will be towards those in the city we've worked closely with in the past. I'm afraid we'll have to decline your offer." Hopefully there's not a lot of time wasted going back and forth after that. These guys make Restlin uncomfortable & he genuinely hopes they'll never bother the IA again.

To the mudtowner, "Your proposal is not without merit. We are told by our contacts in Hook City government that a plan is underway to address this situation, but we're not privy to it. It may undermine the necessity of your offer, or it may turn out that your offer will greatly improve its success. We just don't know. We also aren't totally comfortable presenting the offer of a somewhat nebulous 'collective' of Mudtown associates. My friends and I all realize there are plenty of honest, good-natured folk in Mudtown. There are also folks who...let's just say they help Mudtown earn it's reputation. You seem like a good guy, <INSERT DUDE'S NAME HERE>. We'll make sure our contacts are aware of your offer and remind them of it as we learn more about what the city is planning on doing. We don't make policy here, though. I'm afraid that's the best we can offer."

To Mara: "We've decided to stay here in town during this turn of events. Inspector Auslander has asked us to agree to submit to Hook City control and serve the entire city. If he will accept that we'll be responding to requests from you and your associates with or without Hook City's permission, we're inclined to accept his request. If his offer is an attempt to have us protect the nobility and gentry of this city while ignoring the plights of the rest of its citizens, we'll refuse. As proficient as this city is at producing binding contracts, we'll need to tread very carefully here. Long story short, Mara, you can count on the Iron Adventurers."

To Auslander: "We've agreed to stay here in town and assist our city and its citizens as best we're able. One of our contacts has asked that we continue to protect our square, as well as an expanded area representing mutual acquaintances. These people have supported us from the beginning and we won't deny them. If your request to submit to Hook City governance doesn't prelude us from being there should they need us, then we'll do so."

Restlin leans in very close to Auslander and loses his normal jovial demeanor. "We trust you and believe you to be a good man. We love this city, though some much more than others. I probably love this city more than any of us, but when it comes to bureaucratic matters I don't trust it one bit. If we are asked to ignore wrong-doings that go unresolved to those we care about, we'll refuse. If we're tasked with protecting only the wealthy of this city while the rest are left to themselves, we'll refuse. If you cannot guarantee that this is a temporary arrangement and that we'll be free to operate independently once this fiasco is resolved, we'll refuse. The only reason we're entertaining this is because we trust you and Sgt. Capon."

He then leans back and smiles his normal stupid grin. "So long as we're on the same page, we'll agree to your terms."

Night of the Knocking door Knockers(Co-DM JonathanT)
Wednesday August 13th, 2014 11:36:01 PM

The visitors come and go and the first two are turned away with a 'No' as a response. Perhaps the Mudtown representative shows more disappointment, Mudtown had a lot riding on the IA's help. The two nobles simply shrug and state that the offer will be made to another group then and the IA's loss.

Those were the easy ones. The more difficult ones take a bit more time.

Auslander's proposal meant that the IA would NOT be involved in issues in their own neighborhood and groups from different zones would be sent instead. This to keep a semblance of impartiality and prevent favoritism. The Inspector cannot make exceptions.

Being that, Restlin then is rather 'forced' to decline the Inspector's offer. The Inspector keeps any feelings hidden. He's an experienced man and has been around the IA a lot so it does not come to him as a surprise.

"Well, I know you are good people and have always worked for the good of Hook City. Your strong arms will be missed but this neighborhood will be in good hands nonetheless. I'll make a note not to send any Protector groups to this area unless you call for one. As for other areas, I'd advise stay out, but knowing you guys, that may not be possible." He tries to laugh but it doesn't work out to well.

"Anyway, those new badges may be enough to identify yourselves to the other groups. I'll make sure everyone knows what it looks like. These days ahead will be rough so keep vigilant. As if I need to warn, eh?"

Mara is very happy to hear the IA plan to stay. She had heard rumors of the other groups joining the City and feared the IA would also. She is a bit disappointed that she'll have to tell the other neighborhoods that the IA needs to remain as the Tower Square Protectors only, otherwise they'll be bonking heads with the City.

Half a night still remains but in the morning, upon the news that the IA are going to remain, there are cheers outside and the square becomes a little bit more active than of late, a good sign of confidence, at least in the IA, if not in Hook City proper.

This is the start of the second full day since the Chit Machine demise, still too early to tell what will happen.

Restlin is sure to let Auslander know that he can continue calling on the Iron Adventurers should the need arise. The wizard feels genuinely bad at turning him down, but the City's request just wasn't reasonable. He's not sure why the Mudtown representative felt let down; they're doing what he asked them to do. Surely he realized it was a long shot to begin with.

He smiles broadly at Tink's kind words. He's very glad there was no internal strife about this decision.

When all is said and done, he plops down next to Sesha. "That was hard," is all he says. Restlin can take a beating out in the field, but this diplomacy stuff was tough. He'll eventually retire to his room and sleep soundly.

When he awakes, he happily says good morning to Shiny, chats with Wardd until the diety decides he's heard enough and grants Restlin his handful of divine spells for the day, prepares his arcane magics, and heads downstairs.

Restlin will "patrol" the square today, and by patrol, he means hang out with his fellow citizens, any IA who will join him and can be friendly, and generally have a good time around the people he cares about. He'll pass on the blessings of Wardd, because goodness knows this place could use a little luck right now.

It's what he does best and feels it's good to keep a high profile during these times, seeing how the City won't be around to lend a hand. He does his best to get a feel of what people are thinking & feeling, as well as keep a sharp eye out for any wrong-doings.

Tink, too, goes for a small walk that morning. She's curious to see if perhaps Socraterious has been keeping an eye on the IA. She wanders between the tower and the tavern, smiling to people and just generally trying to stay abreast of the mood in the city

Night of the Knocking door Knockers(Co-DM JonathanT)
Thursday August 14th, 2014 11:56:50 PM

While Restlin and Katinka roam the neighborhood and visit with known residents and meet ones they've not met before, Kyan sets up a couple of kegs in the courtyard and offers free drinks.

The mood has certainly changed a little bit to the better. It didn't take long for the word to spread that the IA were remaining in the Iron Tower. However throughout the day rumors of unrest in other parts of the city make their way to the Iron Tower residents:
A few scuffles here and there and a report of a stolen Teucri heirloom later found destroyed.

Although these rumors seem minor in comparison, the tenseness of the situation magnify everything.
Kids do come out and play, some, and shops have the Open sighs up with a number of street vendors wandering through the neighborhood.
None of the residents know anything about a crazed man named Socraterius, or Crazy-Eye, or seen any such man. This neighborhood is obviously not one of his hang-outs.

The rest of the IA have a day to do whatever they wish. Some take up trying to finish some crafting project, others may want to continue their search for Socraterius or Library Hop. Anrete enjoys the solitude of the penthouse garden, getting solace from the wide variety of vegetation that thrives up there.

Restlin continues his patrol and mission of goodwill. It pains him greatly to hear of areas of unrest that they're not allowed to assist in.

"Leave it to Hook City to spend so much effort making sure help can't get to those who need it without their say so," he grumbles to Tink and anyone else within earshot.

Still, he tries hard to keep his happy face on.

"So do they operate under a democracy? I'm just wondering how they figure out who is in charge around here" Tink looks genuinely puzzled. With the amount of bureaucracy in Hook, she wouldn't be surprised if there were hundreds of laws and bylaws specific to leadership alone.

OOC: You know, I'm not 100% certain on the governmental model of Hook City. The wiki doesn't say anything about it that I can see.

Knowledge, local: 28. Restlin will explain what he knows about the intricacies of Hook City government (ooc: and Carl would like to know a bit more about this as well).

Bosk rolls his eyes a little. Every thing is done with large councils and lots of red tape and lots of waiting. I am not sure how one gets on a council, but my guess is it involves money, political connections, and lots of waiting.

ooc: Can you tell us how the open shops are running? Are they using gold coins now? Trading? IOUs?

Beriothian goes into his room and tries to decide if he needs any armor upgrades before the craziness peruses

ooc: I noticed I don't have my sheet updated. I think I was waiting on confirmation from a teammate as to whether they had crafting cycles left for something before purchasing... I'll hunt down the email chain this weekend and get that in order.

Garret wakes up after noon and yawns. He looks out his window and sees some semblance of normalcy returning to the area around the IA tower. He smiles, walks downstairs, and steps outside to look around a bit, with no particular goal in mind.

Dawn of the ... new DM? (Co-DM JonathanT)
Saturday August 16th, 2014 11:32:11 PM

DM JT OOC: hey guys, I'll wrap up a few questions here and Ian M. will take over on Monday. Be easy on him, at first at least. :}

We'll probably have to consult SteveK for the rundown of Hook City governance. There was a magistrate that passed away not too long ago and a new one elected in his place. How that happens I don't know. Never came up before. How important is it?

Can you tell us how the open shops are running? Are they using gold coins now? Trading? IOUs?

The little commerce going on is done in the varied coin of the Southern Continent that has accumulated in Hook City over the decades. The Tower Square seems more tranquil probably because of the IA's presence. A good reputation is a good thing to have, eh?

OOC: The government of Hook isn't important. Tink was just making conversation with Restlin :)
