The Noble Hunt
Uninvited to the Party

Friday May 30th, 2014 4:04:25 PM

Taking Ceri's message to heart everyone heads to bed early to get some rest. The night passes quickly, but the lack of detail in her not leaves you wondering what the morning may hold. You wake up early, alert for you next assignment, as you head to the dining hall.

Upon entering you notice a well dressed gentleman in a blue silk shirt sitting at the table. You can tell by how uncomfortably straight he sit on the bench that he has has been brought up with the finest of manners, but he lacks the snugness typically seen of the those born into high society and you suspect he is a man's man or set on the behalf of someone either with money or high political office. Adventurers, we have a situation of the most delicate sort. Unfortunately, due to the sensitive nature of the matter I cannot reveal the details unless you agree both to help and not to speak of it to anyone until after the job is over. What I can tell you is that it will be dangerous, involves some very evil people, and if you are successful it will be the the benefit of all of Rum. You will also be well compensated for your troubles. More than this I cannot say unless you agree to help and to keep this a private matter.

Gerox stumbles over his eyes bleary and his breath foul. His hair is ruffled and he seems quite content and relaxed for some reason. He looks over at the others and says, "Oh stop blustering. You know you we are going to do this. This is the kind of stuff we do. Stick our noses into caves, go on long boat rides without much thought and help damsels in distress. Especially cute ones.

He looks at the well dressed gentlemen and says, "Peza says we are in. She speaks for the group. If the others just want to sit around and drink, drool and fart, we two will handle it for you but somehow I think they will tag along."

Barratore waves off Zalmay and Edson and answers Peza, "I'm in. He's explained all I need to know."

The minotaur reaches across the table and helps himself to a third plate of food. The details will be all hashed out Peza and Gerox, and he still had some last minute cash to get a few things if need be

The already rigid man goes stiff as a board at the mention of vampires, nearly dropping his coffee. Err...well...since the young lady has already accepted....yes...at least we think so. As I mentioned before, this is a delicate situation. We have reason to believe that there is a vampire that has been setting up various residents across town. The bodies of several urchins have been found with puncture marks in their necks. This would be troublesome enough, but they appear to be specially fond of rich folks. Several merchants and political leaders have vanished. Most recently was a rather liked fixer responsible for much of the finer architecture in the city. Before he disappeared was reportedly heard talking about an invitation he received to attend a hunt some ways North of the city. After some investigation we have reason to believe others disappeared after receiving a similar invite.

So, I want to spread the rumor that you've come into a great sum of money. Let's say you've killed a dragon. We'll try to lure this vampire into inviting you for a "hunt." Expect that he will attack you with his friends during the hunt. Be vigilant. Then turn the tables on him and bring him to justice. I have Letters of Marque for you giving you permission to kill him AFTER he has sprung his trap. We don't know who all is involved in this situation, but we want them all. The last thing we need right now is a panicked populace just when we are trying to get folks to resettle here rather than a more established city, or for the vampire in question to be alerted to our pans.
The man sets his cup down looking to see how you will respond to the news.

Hmm...this sounds interesting thinks the barbarian. "We've killed a vamp before, sounds fun. But not sure how the rumor thing will work out for ya. We've quite a following in town here. And we spent two days drinkin' and enjoyin' ourselves at the local tavern. No mention of dragonslayin'. Not sayin' ya can't try, but it'd be little out of character for us." He says. "Sides, we ain't exactly rich folk that would be good sport for this hunter. It'd be easy to see, we are the hunters. Just lettin' ya know the things I see."

Barratore about spits his ale, "Us as soft target rich folks? Gotta be the dumbest vampire in the Wold." he states flatly. The fighter look s a bit queer at Zalmay and teh comment of wolves and tigers, but decides it must be a cleric thing or other learned bit of religious wisdom and mentally shrugs it off.

As to what Peza was going into, it made his head hurt a bit and so he tunes her out. It would be explained later, likely more than twice.

In truth the vampire thing did not sit well with Barratore, last one took control of Brom and the barbarian had cut him down. Sure he was trying to be nice and not kill Brom, but still. Brom was dangerous and what if he succumbed himself somehow. No vampires and mind control did not sit well at all with Barratore. Maybe Zalmay would have a solution for that

Gerox thinks for a moment and agrees with the others, He asks, "I think your plan is sound in theory but my friends are correct. While we are not Gold Dragons, we do have a certain reputation in Rum. I doubt that the vampires would just assume we were bait. No we have to change the playing field. Maybe some kind of disguises? What kind of resources do we have at our disposal? For instance, if we all buy some hat of disguises, we could appear different? The hats could just be loaned to us. Then we could pose as something else. Maybe a nobleman and his family plus retainers.

The other question is what street urchins? How does Rum, such a new city have street urchins already? That is just disturbing!"

DM James
Tuesday June 3rd, 2014 12:37:46 PM

The man listens quietly to your questions and takes a minute to think before speaking. I think you have some preconceived notions about wealth making people soft, despite the fact that you are much wealthier than most the citizens of Rum. You need to keep in mind that everyone in Rum gave up their past lives to travel to an unknown land and seek adventure, wealth, or a second chance. Those with money still seek excitement. Have you never seen trophies mounted on peoples walls? Great boars heads or large antlers hung over the fireplace? There is thrill in the hunt for many. The more dangerous the hunt the better the story, even if the conditions are somewhat controlled. Surely you must understand. From what I hear a member of your own party hunted down a viscous boar on his own and got gored in the process.

Responding to Peza he adds, Anything that promised a nice trophy would draw interest in the right circles. As for the people being targeted, it appears the vampires are feeding randomly off the entire population, but that those being invited to these "hunts" have had money and could hold their own in a battle...not unlike yourselves. The type of people that would do well hunting a boar, or putting up a fight if they were the ones being hunted. As far as their jobs, the merchants shops were taken over by relatives or their customers left to a competitor. Those that worked for the city will be replaced by someone appointed by the people.

As for a time frame, it depends on if we can convince them to extend you an invitation, but I would expect it to be at least a couple days.
As far as what help we can offer you, I'm afraid I was not given any instructions on that matter. I started by coming here because I knew you were capable and assumed would be well equipped.

ooc: The term urchin includes those who are inadequately protected or supervised. Good luck preventing that. Also, if you look up hirelings, something like an expensive lawyer only makes 10gp a day. You are not the wealthiest on the island, but you are definitely in the upper class.

Barratore feels his head turn a bit, he was even more puzzled by the explanation then the original issue. His idea of a vampire was a cowardly craven creature of the night out to prey on the weak and defenceless. That did not describe the party. Why those of means sought out adventure, that he could identify with, quite easily. It was the reason he was here in the first place. A couple days and wait, what the what?

While we in the Woldian League fight to protect the innocent and defend good, we are a mercenary group. What compensation do you offer for us hunting these vile, nasty and troublesome beasts? Anything thing or group of things, that can take down the most powerful members of a society is not to be trifled with. I suspect you guys can come up with some assistance in materials to bring this threat down. I suggest some hats of disguise if you want us to follow your plan. Brom was in agreement with Barratore. One vampire was an interesting challenge, but more than one was another matter altogether. The man picks his glass of coffee back up and takes a sip. I think you will find you have plenty of time to make your preparation, I just ask that you remain discrete about it. The last thing we want is for them to get tipped off. As to the number of vampires, he says as he scratches his head, well, there may be only one and there might be more. I suppose they might not even be vampires. All we have are theories, but my hunch based off the number of bodies and disappearances is that there are at least two. It is also possible he has servants who can look after him during the day hours controlled either through a greed for gold or magic, so stay on your guard.

When Gerox brings up the subject of Beastlords and compensation a large smile spreads across the mans face. I know nothing of these Beastlords, but it is understood that if you do a job you expect to get paid. You would be hired by the city, but those most directly responsible wish to remain anonymous until the threat is eliminated for fear of retaliation and the well being of their families. They have allowed for two options as far as payment goes.

Several of the men who disappeared had valuable items on them when they went hunting. Weapons and armor, some of which were family heirlooms. If you desire this then you can take your pay out of what you find.

If not, then we can hire you on a cash basis. Each member of your group that participates will get 6,000gp with 1,000gp upfront and the rest paid upon completion of the job. However, if this is done we will require any valuable items you find to be turned over to us. We will return what we can to its owners. Everything else will become the property of Rum and be used to help the families of the previous victims, including those from the streets.
(Nice diplomacy check).

I don't think we can change our appearance enough with our reputations around town without magic so we will have to forgo that plan. I wonder if one of us can be bait though? The vampires or whatever obviously like a challenge or they are trying to cripple the upper crust. Either way, with our reputations and wealth beyond the normal citizen, maybe we can make something of it.

Peza is our leader. If they are trying to kill the leadership, she might be an obvious choice to act as bait. She has skill with weapons also so if they are looking for a challenge, she might represent enough of one. We have to find a way to stick close to her while seemingly leaving her vulnerable. You listen closely as the gnome sorcerer negotiates payment for the groups' services. Despite his short stature you can see the excitement and passion burning in his violet eyes as he brings up two possible offers. One for gold and the other a vague promise with the possibility of great wealth. Perhaps it is his gambling nature or the exciting promise of unknown treasures, but the gnome is instantly attracted to the idea of lost heirlooms whose history is is often as valuable as the items itself. Besides, how better to get someone to give up their claim to something valuable than offering them gold and buying them out before they know what they are giving up?

Once the arrangements are worked out the man sets down his coffee and stands to leave. Very well. Please remember to keep our arrangements private until the job is over, and not to kill him until after the trap is sprung so that we can be sure to catch all who are involved. If you will pardon me, I have some rumors to spread. I will leave it to you to determine how best to prepare. With that he gives a slight bow and heads out the door.

The morning is taken up with your usual routines, shopping and reviewing the rules of proper ettique.

That evening Lord Edson is ready to makes his rounds, buying drinks for the League Adventurers and working to give off an air of superiority as he looks down on those around him. At Gerox request he even buys a large selection of bar food ranging from fried shrimp to Leviathan jerky. Even as the drinks are being served only to the League Adventurers, you soon find yourselves with a veritable entourage of followers. Some who seek free drinks, some who some who see the makings of a great night and want to be seen and say they were present, and some who have suddenly become interested in the WLA and are talking about joining in the morning.

As the drinks flow the barkeep approaches the young "Lord". Sorry to trouble you, but it is policy to collect some payment when a tab gets as large as yours. Of course I trust you, but if I don't ask the others will expect to run up equally large tabs, they aren't as honorable as you.

A good time is had by all, but the morning reveals little to show for your efforts other than the after effects of an over abundance of alcohol, but no one said this job would be easy. At breakfast after your third night of reputation building a courier wearing the livery of the Tremblay family delivers a message to Ceri who in turn passes it to Peza. The message consists of a folded piece of parchment secured with wax and stamped with the seal of the Tremblay family (a boar's head surrounded by six stars).

My Esteemed Adventurers,
Tales of your accomplishments with the weeping statues have reached my ears and elicited a spark of interest within me. It has become my habit to invite persons of interest to my home for dinner, and while I normally extend such invitations only to the nobility, I believe your deeds merit an exception. If I am convinced that your reputations are not unfounded, I may have information of interest to you, and perhaps even a business opportunity.

Your attendance is requested at my mansion north of the city at sundown on the eve of the next full moon. Activities include dinner prepared by my servants and a moonlight hunt of whatever fast natural creature we can find near the grounds. Daylight hunts are far too easy for a man of my skill, and based on the stories I presume that the same holds true for you. Please respond by the day after tomorrow by courier, letter, or in person.
With gracious intent,
Lord Edward Tremblay

The courier leaves after handing Ceri the note, and as soon as he does you turn your minds to the task at hand. Barratore raises his glass to Lord Kazil as he realizes that invitation to a hunt was the perfect explanation for the group to come armed. As you eat your breakfast the talk turns to tactics. How and when to respond to the message, if it might be wise to explore the grounds during the day, and even the idea of laying a trap or a hidden cache of supplies...just in case.

Peza is glad that things are going as planned, but the idea of a moonlit banquet foes little to ease Peza's mind. She has no doubt as to the danger that lays ahead.

With preparations in place for the upcoming hunt Gerox and Barratore scout the land leading towards the Lord's property. It is a beautiful day out and the flowers are in bloom. You wander for hours before realizing you made a wrong turn and have been traveling in circles. It then takes you the rest of the day to find your way back to Rum. Ooc: Sorry, no checks of any kind were made so I cannot give you any results.

Finally the appointed day arrives. Most of you choose to sleep in late in order to be well rested for the evening banquet. You find that Ceri left instructions for a late brunch to be prepared for you, as well as a clearly marked map to help you find your way. After eating your fill and polishing your gear everyone heads out, making their way to the edge of the city. You figure it should take about an hour to reach the Lord's banquet.

He gets more than he would eat and offers some to the others. He knows it could be a long night and he doesn't want hunger to become an issue. He also has a few drinks with his meals, just to calm his nerves. Waiting is the worst thing for him now. Too much thinking about what ifs.

When not eating, Brom spends time sharpening his sword, getting his gear ready, and thinking...too much thinking.

Without anything else he can think of, Barratore goes though his gear. Ok 10 minutes down now what. He goes through it again. Putting on his armor, the fighter decides to burn off some excess energy. A nap in the late afternoon will set him right and so he goes for a two mile run in full gear. Back at the compound in less than 20 minutes, he moves through his long morning combat routine. Blade, bow, hand and horn. The others were probably awake and he could smell food cooking, putting the time close to noon, maybe an hour before.

Barratore heads his, dunks himself to rinse off the sweat and sits at a table for something to eat. Still petty full of energy and nearly giddy with excitement.

Barratore takes a late afternoon nap and is ready to go

On the trip, he takes up a position just behind and to the right do Edson. Noticing nothing out of the ordinary, and those things elude him

Making their way to the edge of Rum Peza holds the others back, informing you that you will move forward at a casual pace as Gerox does his job, scouting ahead with Barratore. For a half hour the two cautiously move forward using the map to make sure they stay on course. Barratore follows closely behind the gnome sorcerer noting nothing usual about his surroundings. No birds singing. No squirrels running nosily through the trees. Nothing that causes him alarm. Without warning Gerox stops in front of him and raises a hand. The growing quiet had caused him to become ever cautious, but that was nothing compared to the sight on the path before him. Numerous wolf prints cross the road here, larger than any wolf he had ever seen. It would appear there really is legendary hunting out this way.

Peza and the others quickly catch up to the scouting party, stopping short of where the fiery gnome stands examining the tracks. Edson stays atop his horse as the young girl watches Gerox's finger trace the distinct paths of a half dozen separate tracks....there may even be more, but with the way the tracks converge it is impossible to tell for sure. "Wolves must be new to the area." Says Brom as he recalls the groups surveying mission across the island. While wolves might have always existed unnoticed on the island it is unlikely a pack this large avoided detection for so long this close to the city.

Barratore dismisses the tracks as being a distraction whereas Gerox wonders if lycanthropes might run together, and if there is a chance these prints might have been left by a werewolf. As he ponders this Peza steps forward and takes in the scene ... "Those are huge." whispers the girl as she studies the tracks. They appear fresh and cross the trail leading into the woods on the other side. Bigger than any wolf she had ever heard about, even bigger than the typical dire wolf. As the enormous beasts bare their teeth Gerox launches a fire ball into their mist causing the wolves to yelp in pain. "Gang up on the three to the south, put them down and then we can worry about the others!" he calls out as the smell of charred fur fills the air.

Brom quickly moves forward and strikes out at the large wolf in front of him. The blow hits home and he allows the swing continues into the wolf next to it as he gives a boisterous battle cry. A second later an arrow flies by his head as Edson releases the string on his bow, killing the wolf in front of him.

At the back of the group Barratore grips his sword with his second hand and bears his teeth into a grin. This was going much better than he had hoped with Gerox's fireball explodes and Brom steps forward to engage. Trusting his team, he stays where he is and anchors the groups right flank unleashing on the wolf behind him as it approaches. His next swing hits the dog hard skull, bounces off and swings around to the wolf south of it.

Peza's eyes widen as six huge wolves step from the darkness, but a grin splits her face as she watches Barratore and Brom wreak havoc. Quickly she releases tow shots, the first one burrying seep in its target.

Enemies Turn

The wolves hackles rise as they are bathed in fire and one of their pack falls under a flurry of attacks. Instantly the move forward, closing in their circle. Two of the wolves target the large minotaur. The first wolf is too slow for its prey, but the second sinks its large teeth into Barratore's thigh. The next to wolves move in after Brom. The raging barbarian's armor saves him from one attack, but wolf 4 finds a gap in his defenses and sinks his teeth into Brom's arm sending a wave of pain traveling up the warriors shoulder. The last wolf, charging out of the fire, lunges at Peza missing by inches as its jaw snaps wildly in the air.

You cannot make an additional attack against the first target like you would in a full attack. It looks like Barratore tried making 2 attacks against the first wolf and one against the second. I used the crit on the 2nd wolf.

The gnome shouts as he looks approvingly at the destruction his fireball has caused and casts a haste spell on his companions to increase their wrath on the mangy mutts. Brom takes another great swing at the wolf, the force of the hit with his bastard sword not quite enough to carrying it to next wolf's. All about you the forest is silent, and slowly the subtle noises of wild life return as squirrels skitter from tree to tree and birds once again resume their singing. There is no sign that these creatures were anything more than a feral pack, but their unusual size and strength suggests an outside influence previously unseen and unexplainable on the island. And after a minute of searching, all that remains to be seen is the path to the banquet.

As Barratore wipes his blade off he questions whether these creatures were a danger to the citizens of Rum, knowing that an average citizen would stand no chance against a single wolf let alone a hole pack. Peza acknowledges the risk they pose as she examines the tracks and recalls what she can about wolves. As a range she is well aware that wolves sit at the top of the food chain and sleep in the open because they have no predators to fear. When the weather is bad, they may curl up and let snow drift over them to provide extra protection from the elements. She also knows that wolves are ferociously territorial and exceptionally wide-ranging in their hunting ,with wolf packs cover broad areas. There would be no den to find and it is unlikely that another pack of such wolves would be sharing this territory with the one the League Adventurer's slaughtered.

Ever cautious, Gerox casts detect magic and takes a hard look at the wolves. They are much larger than normal, but the only traces of magic he can detect or on the group itself. Where ever they came from was influenced by pure genetics, either brought from another location or a strange cross breed...but there is nothing on the island he could think of that would result in such a species.

"I wonder if these were a test? If someone launched them against us to evaluate are strengths and coordination. We might have beaten them to easily if that is the case. If someone is watching, they now know that we can work decently as a team and need to be planned for." House on a Hill

DM James

Seeing nothing more on the trail you carefully make your way to Lord Tremblay's mansion. The thick woods blot out the light around you, casting eerie shadows that seem to flit about the ground as the branches sway in the wind. After a while the path becomes broader and well-maintained. Following it for about a mile, the path slowly begins to climb a wooded hill, atop which stands a two story building with a large chimney at the side and a double-door entrance in the front.

You can see a small path leads to the left around the house, presumably to a stable. In a clear area to the right stands a long wooden table with eight chairs (one slightly larger than the others, perfect for a minotaur). Brom's keen and attentive eyes note several servants are busy setting dishes, glasses, and silverware at each place. Four vertical wooden poles surround the table, each holding an unlit lantern about 7 feet off the ground. Close by a thin man with iron-gray hair stands on the paving stones just outside the front door of the manor, directing the servants as they go in and out of the house. The scent of cooking food floats down the hill from the manor whenever the door opens.

Amidst the din of servants preparing for the banquet Peza quickly picks out the man most likely to be in charge and locks eyes with him as she approaches, making sure to drop "Lord Kazil's" name within earshot. Suddenly the man blows an old horn, the type typically used to inform nobles on the ground of guests arrival, sounds. Its low resonant tones cutting through the air.

As the girl moves up the hill Edson dismounts and hands his reigns to Gerox and Barratore who lead the horse back around to the stables as the "Lord" waits for someone to approach him before introducing himself. A moment later the well dressed man with gray hair who blew the horn approaches and "Lord Kazil" steps forward to meet him. The man bows low to Edson, showing great respect as he introduces himself as Cameron, faithful servant of his Lord. Lord Tremblay sends his greetings. You are a little early, but he should out shortly. Feel free to look around the grounds, the banquet will be served at sunset. Please let me know there is anything you or your companions need.

As greetings are exchanged Brom and Barratore scan the area and note that the table in this area is set for eight guests. Each place setting features three different plates and a dizzying selection of forks and spoons. The lantern-poles should be more than sufficient to light this entire area during the meal, and the hill slopes down to the south and provides a nice view of the hillside and the nearby land.

On the northwestern edge of the hill Gerox follows a well-trodden path leading down to the east. About halfway down the hill the path branches into three parts. One branch ends a clearing in front of a building that looks like a stable and a small house constructed of wood and stone. Another branch leads west to the front of the manor, and a third leads south to a small door in the garden wall behind the mansion. Quickly he makes his way to the stables where he unsaddles the horse, noticing it is acting slightly nervous and keeps looking to the back of the stables. From here he can easily see the stables also includes a kennel where three large hunting dogs are kept.

Peza also follows the path around the building, taking the other branch leading to the garden. It is surrounded by a small hedge wall, over which she can see a beautiful array of flowers and an ornate vegetable garden with plants chosen as much for their appearance as for their taste. Making her way to the door she determines that it leads to the grounds keeper's house, a small building clearly designed to keep the help out of sight and out of mind when not working.

After finishing with the horses Gerox moves to the kennels to take a closer look at the hounds. Something about them sparks his interest and after scanning the area for other servants he casts detect magic and scans the area. Looking about, the only auras he detects are those on his own person, but the one thing he does notice is that the animals in the crates are not hounds, they are wolves.

The sky begins to glow orange with the setting sun and Peza and slowly makes her way back to the table and "Lord Kazil". Taking her seat, she notes that the servants are dedicated to their work, but finds nothing concerning about their actions. A minute later Brom, Gerox and Barratore sit down. You have just enough time to share what you learned (no new information was gained from the most recent checks) when you hear the ancient horn blow again.

Moments before sundown, a tall man approaches from the southwest strolling across the lawn. Lord Edward Tremblay Cameron announces as a man dressed in a fashionable noble's hunting outfit approaches. He is fairly hansom, and though his boots are dirty everything else about him speaks of propriety. His body is tall, lean, and strong, and he has fair skin, dark hair, and clear blue eyes.

As darkness gathers Edward welcomes the group and gestures for those not seated to join him at the table. The night breezes are warm, and the glow of the torches provides a cozy atmosphere. Lord Kazil, I am so pleased that you accepted my invitation. Edward says as he gives a deep bow. It is quite an honor to have you at my table. I think you will find that this evening proves a memorable one. My servants have seen signs of large bear, wolves and wild bore in the area and the full moon always makes them more active at night. But enough of that. Please, have a seat and tell me of your adventures. I want to hear it from the horse's mouth, as they say, without the commoners getting all the details wrong.

As soon as everyone is seated, Edward signals for the servants to bring the drinks and the first course. The smell is bliss and you find all of the food and wine served of exceptionally high quality. You start with a small plate of Artichoke canapés topped with leviathan shrimp medallions carved into small roses and sprinkled with fennel followed by roasted tomato and red pepper soup with goat cheese and fresh basil and then a spring mix salad with an orange olive oil vinaigrette and dried cranberries.

As you talk the servants come around offering you your choice of red and white wine or a dark dwarven stout. Edward drinks the red wine (and the ever observant Peza notices servants sneaking glasses of all three as they carry silver platters from the table back into the mansion).

Drugging the party through food and drink at the beginning of the meal, seemed like a good way to go to him. His stomach, however, had other ideas as the aromas hit his nostrils and his eyes took in the plates set out. Barratore finds himself with two empty tankards of Dwarven ale next to his full one. he has nothing to offer on the tales of the party, that was for Edson, Harvest and Peza and to a lesser extent Gerox. Harvest was gone though and the thought gives him pause again on the small girl from the Contested Kingdoms. What was she writing in her books and journal this night he wondered briefly?

A loud snort shakes the thought from his mind and he focuses back in on lord Edward and the conversation, in case he is asked a direct question. The tales of adventure could come from the others. Well, not Brom, but the other others...Barratore finds his mins wandering again

As the food is slowly devoured Edson playfully tells your host of the wolves destruction, all the while observing Lord Tremble's reaction. The man appears genuinely interested in your stories and as far as Kazil can tell the man's greatest motivation at the moment is ensuring the group eats and drinks their fill, a man interested in throwing a grand banquet that will live up to certain expectations.

Barratore was considering being cautious on the food and drink offered, however as the aromas hit his nostrils he soon finds himself with two empty tankards of Dwarven ale next to his full one as the tales of adventure he leaves to others, Brom follows his example, but Peza fills the void while accepting a glass of the red wine. Edward shows great interest in the statues, both from the prospective of a hunter and that of a collector.

When Gerox asks what enticed him to these far shores a sad look crosses his face. It is the curse of the first born. In families of our standing the first born inherits all of the land and the majority of the money in order to preserve the family legacy. I know it sounds nice, but it is the younger son that gets to travel the Wold seeking adventure. As the eldest I have to stay in one spot in order to receive business communications and limit my activities to those deemed acceptable for one of my standing. I used to explore ancient ruins, and now I am limited to trophy hunts on my grounds. Its boring. Then I heard about Rum and saw the potential it held, not just economically, but in the freedom it presented. Under the justification of setting up several investments on the island I was able to move to this untamed land for one last adventure and leave my holdings in New Elenna under the care of a trusted steward.

As if to illustrate the point, during the course of the conversation Edward is approached twice by two different men carrying papers for him to sign. Both times Edward looks annoyed and apologizes for the interruptions, explaining that as his family's representative in this area, he sometimes has to deal with family business at inopportune times. Each time he briefly scans the parchment before him before signing his name.

When the second man leaves Edward raises his right and and the servants once again come out carrying several more trays of steaming food. One by one they offer you your choice of roasted leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic served with roasted vegetables and Gorgonzola mashed potatoes or Beef medallions with morels, Marsala and crème fraiche served with smashed herbed potatoes and sautéed green beans. The decadent smell causes you to practically drool as your glasses are refilled.

The society of family honor, clan and Imod was not so different and at the same time it was. Perhaps it was that what was important were not things, but concepts made it so. Barratore was first born, but was there was no things to tie him anywhere. his clan, honor, family and Imod went wherever he did. As it did with his 3 younger brothers in the lives they chose. Humans, dwarfs, many of the noble races had odd notions of importance.

Ah more food and drink, Barratore takes a sampling of everything on the table and finds himself blurting without thinking "Simply don't, my advise."

If it isn't to forward of me, can I ask what opportunities you found that make Rum so interesting to you?

We all joined the WLA for two reasons. The first is adventure has a call on our hearts and it brings out into the wild to see and experience new things. We have already found a new society and made friends in it. We have battled evil and helped Rum stay safe. That is our second calling. To fight evil and protect those who don't have the ability to protect themselves.

It seems to me that we have a unique opportunity here. Our Lord here has hired us to act as protection because he knows the members of the WLA are honorable and will stand with him as he explores this island. His heart runs along the same line as ours do. I think your heart might be the same. A thirst for adventure with an eye out for main chance to find advancement for ourselves and our families.

If you tell us what brought you to the island, we might find ways to mutual benefit each other."

As Edward tells his story it brings about a surprising range of emotions from the group. A man who had everything yet was trapped and in many ways had nothing due to the burden of responsibility on honor, a difficulty many on the group had faced themselves at some point. Even so, the Lord Thief had a feeling the story was a combination of truth and misdirection. Hoping to draw out a little more information Gerox presses him for further details as others emphasize with his situation.

I have not done much as of yet, my home was only recently built and my belongings have only partially shipped and are not even fully unpacked as of yet. What drew me here was a matter of simple geography. After studying maps of the various trade routes I determined that this would be a prime location for intersecting trade routes to meet in order to restock supplies and trade wares. With the recent discovery of the Liviathan Shrimp it is even more assured that this will be the case. As such I am investing in a combination of ships, docks, warehouses, trading stalls and a ship wright. Although most of the prime land is already occupied, it is my hopes to buy some of the current merchants out. They will have more money than they could have hoped for while I will be in it for the long term investment. If that fails I will build on the edge of the city. If my predictions are correct the outer edge of the city will in the coming years become the new center...but enough of business and money, that is the very thing I am trying to forget. Tell me more of your adventures, such tales are better than that of business before a hunt.. You must have had some exciting tales settling this island or other adventures with the WLA.

After indulging in the final course, or in some cases multiple final courses, the servants begins collecting your plates as Edward stands and invites you into the mansion for one last drink by the fire to help your meals settle before the hunt. (Assuming there are no objections) he then leads the up the path.

A servant waits outside to open the doors for you, and Edward walks through the front door into what appears to be a sumptuously appointed living room. A great stone fireplace occupies most of this chamber's east wall. The fire has burned down low and is now little more than coals. Against the walls stand eight wooden chairs, and four large, decorative urns mark the corners of the chamber. Two sets of double doors open into the room--one on the north wall, and one on the south. Edward casually points out the sitting room and the dining room beyond, then makes a grand gesture encompassing the rest of the house. "Welcome to my humble home. Do make yourselves comfortable," Edward says easily, taking a seat by the fireplace. "I regret that I cannot show you the rest of the house at this time, but frankly, I have been so busy with the bussienss arrangements that I haven't had time to unpack all of my reference books and other belongings. Worse still, some of the trophies from my hunts are still waiting at the tanner's because I haven't had time to arrange delivery, let alone find places to hang them."

Offering everyone a glass or two of the finest whiskey he smiles and offers a proposal. Lets make things interesting. I am willing to wager 1,000 gold coins that I can bring down a deer or other subtitle trophy before anyone else in the group, provided that weapons and not magic are used for the kill.

Comfortable for him is standing, been sitting far too long during the lengthy meal. Barratore accepts another drink and upon mention of the bet looks over at Edson and Peza. more so at Peza, because even though the rouse is that Edson is in charge, he is simply far more used to Peza taking lead and so more out of habit than anything else, he looks her way.

Barratore is no hunter, he is a warrior. Ranged combat, hand to hand or melee weapon and he feels he can challenge any other. Hunting is a different skill set. Perception, tracking and stalking are more important than aim. The fighter knows he will lose such a contest. Brom might fair better, but if Edward is truly an accomplished hunter, he likely would drop the animal before Brom and especially himself, even knew it was there. For all that though, if Peza wants him, he will accept the bet.

While confident in his skill as a warrior, Barratore declines the bet knowing that such a hunt requires additional skills which he lacks, but Peza and Edson are quick to accept. And Peza asks for any hints he might have given that he is more familiar with the grounds. The animals are drawn to the paths in the woods. Carriages and horses tend to kill small rodents which attract scavengers, which in turn attract larger animals. Typically I follow the trail into the woods and keep my eyes peeled for tracks and my ears listening for things moving in the brush. The trick is to always be looking for signs of your quarry. As Edward talks Gerox sends a private message to Edson.

Suddenly the ancient horn blows again and Edward looks up, appearing to stare straight through Gerox. A grin crosses his face...I think there will be one more joining our little hunting party...I hope you don't mind, but I think you will get along quite well...you could say he has been dying to meet you... A moment later the door behind Gerox opes and a cloaked figure walks in, his face hidden beneath the cowls of his long robe. Allow me to introduce Anthe Wardson.

Anthe removed his cowl as he walked in, leaves falling at his feet as he did. The room filled with the faint smell of a forest during a heavy rain. He looked at each member of the gathered party, resting on each for a moment before moving on to the next.

He smiled slightly and nodded his head, "Hello, it is a pleasure to meet you all." His words poured from his mouth smoothly, almost as if he were humming.

Anthe takes a moment to access the group he can feel their watchful eyes reading him in turn. Edward had told him the rumors of the groups adventures and he was curious to see if they would live up to their reputation on the hunt, and what adventurous man does not like a good hunt with adventurers of such reputation?

As you make small talk and introductions Edward hands out drink, refilling them whenever a glass gets too empty. After the formalities are taken care of he summons Cameron and orders him to leash the dogs. They are quiet enough to not scare prey.[b] He explains as he takes a bow off the wall and slings it over his back, [b]but they are trained to signal us if the pick up a scent and will point us in the right direction if anything is hiding in the woods.

A couple minutes later Cameron informs him that the hounds are ready and Edward leads you back outside. As he takes the leashes in hand the dogs begin pulling, having clearly picked up a scent. Are you ready? he asks.

He positions himself next to Barratore and says, "Keep your eyes open big guy. I know you can swat down a dragon without a thought or breaking a sweat but something is making the hairs on the back of my neck stick up."

The Hunt

DM James  d20=13 ; d20=8 ;

Seeing that everyone is ready Edward calls to the dogs and the hunt is on. True to his word, the animals are silent as they continually tug on their master's leash heading down the path. Lord Edward takes the lead with "Lord Kazil" not far behind, and as they pass from the manor down the path the ancient horn sounds twice to signal the Lord's departure so the servants may pray for a safe hunt and a safe return.

It takes less than a minute for the torch lit banquet to fade out of site, leaving those without night vision in relative darkness unless they carry some light source on them. Lord Edward carries one in the hand not holding the leashes as he scans the trail. Movement is slow so that no trail or foot print is over looked, and occasionally he will tug on the hounds leashes to stay them as he peers into the looming darkness of the trees before continuing on. Finally Edward holds up a hand for the group to stop as he kneels down to examine some tacks and points into the woods to your right.

ooc: Up to this point any perception checks of the woods, trail, etc have revealed the occasional small animal, but nothing of note.

As the hunting party starts into the darkness, Brom retrieves a potion from his pack (Darkvision) and drinks down the draught. Slowly the darkness of the night starts to clear and the barbarian now is able to see out beyond the light of the torches.

His face elongated, his hand and feet changed into paws with large claws at the end, a tail sprouted from the small of his back. When he was done a large predatory cat stood in his place.

As Edward examines the tracks you quietly stop and move closer to try and identify the prints and scan the area he is pointing towards. Edson picks up on every detail, the size and shape of the hoof print, the rustle of a branch as a squirrel runs past, but even his impressive tracking skills can't yet spot the allusive quarry.

Anthe slowly moves to the front of the group and allows himself to take on the form of a tiger to the surprise of everyone. After greeting his tiger friend Anthe moves up next to Lord Edward and lowers himself closer to the ground, trying to pick up a scent, and instantly his head turns to look behind him. He just has time to pick up two unusual scents when a pack of wolves charges out of the trees towards you.

The entire hunting group looks on in surprise particularly Edson and Anthe who both are sure there was nothing following you a moment ago. The wolves don't hesitate as the surround you and attack. The snarling is terrible, but they they appear to be regular wolves and only Gerox and Edward (who is still bent over examining the tracks) take any damage.

All looking at him like he is a snack! He doesn't want to be eaten by wolves. He also knows that if he tries a spell casting, the wolves will tear into him. He doesn't have any room for movement and he has to break out of the circle.

He sighs and decides to drop a fireball sort of on himself but centered on Q3 hoping to take some wolves down with him. A adrenaline charged smile crosses Brom's lips. "Better." He says as more wolves attack. "Time ta play." Brom quickly puts down one of he wolves. As the mutt falls he can see Anthe roars as both the tigers making short work of one of the pack animals attacking them.

To the south Edson's blade flashes as twice it bites into the wolf in front of him with devastating accuracy as he is able to rely on his rogue knowledge and cut for vital spots and quickly bleeds out the beast before him.
(Edson was not flanking as he and Peza are not on opposite corners, so I moved Edson 5ft diagonal to flank)

Suddenly a brilliant flash lights up the forest as Gerox risks all to send forth an enormous fireball. A half dozen wolves had snapped and bit at him as his hands weave the spell, but his mind was focused and he could not be deterred. He barely even felt the pain (because the wolves rolled 1s and 2s on dmg).
(Gerox triggers 6 AoO and takes 7 dmg)
(Spells with a 20ft radius are centered on an intersection not a single square. I placed the fire ball as best I could per your description. Killed 2 wolves and injured 4 wolves.)

Seeing the sorcerer being surrounded Barratore plants his blade in ones neck as it approaches, and as the fireball erupts he slays two more.

Smoothly loading her crossbow Peza also kills wolf, but as her senses soak in the sights and sounds of battle her instincts tell her someone is somebody must be directing these wolves, and as she looks around she sees two men come out of the woods and approach. Anthe can smell them clearly now, as if their smell had been all but undetectable until recently.

As the men get closer to your torches you can see their faces more clearly, their pointed teeth glistening in the moon light. You recognize them as the men that came out during dinner to have Edward sign paperwork, though their appearance had not been so terrible at the time.
You look surprised to see us Edwaard. says the first man.
Did you like the tracks we left for you? asks the second.

Instantly they charge forward. Barratore swings at the closest man as he approaches, but his blade misses the agile vampire. (Makah still gets an AoO)

he only surprise is that you took so long. says Edward. Could you have been much more obvious with those spells?

Then all three men join in the attack along with the hounds and wolves. Gerox feels feels another wolf sink its teeth deep into his flesh (5dmg) and Anthe feels the shooting pain of a hounds claws tearing his hide (9 dmg). Barratore feel the heat of steel as Carlos long sword cuts deep into his side. Brom is able to dodge Edward's attacks, but a second later Vincent sends forth a scorching ray that he cannot escape.

"Vampires !! " Peza shouts as she faces Lord Tremblay. Her mind races with tactics and she quickly applies silversheen to Barratore's blade. "Vampires bane " barks out the raven haired girl as it gleams in the torch light. Once it is applied he strikes back, bringing his shield in close and thrusting straight forward, but the vampire is too quick and evades the blow.

"Death has come for ya, Lord. I am DEATH!" Brom yells in rage while swinging his sword, but he too is unable to connect with the undead Lord. As the blades miss Gerox eyes glitter as he steps forward taunting, "You like fire? I like fire too. Taste mine!" The smell of charred flesh fills the air as the vampire's skin burns and cracks, but it is not enough to stop his cold blooded counterpart.

Close by Edson's continues to attack the wolves as he deftly pulls out his longsword.

Mahka misses the vampire's leg as he charges by, but the wolf easily puts a swift end to the wolf attacking it. Anthe tries to do the same to one of Edward's hounds, but the beast proves much more formidable. Only two of his attacks hit and and he despite the force behind them and the fact that it would have easily ended the life of one of the wolves, it is just barely enough to drop the hound. Suddenly the slain dog transforms before his eyes, taking on the form of a man...or what once was a man.

As the transformation takes place chaos ensues as the remaining wolves attack with fury, though this none of them are able to break through your defenses. The remaining hounds are more successful, their powerful jaws biting Brom (11 dmg) and Edson (8 dmg) and then lashing out with their claws striking Anthe (13 dmg), Brom (6 dmg) and Edson (6 dmg)

Before anyone can react Vincent sends forth two scorching rays striking both Brom (15) and Barratore (18). As the fire singes his bur Barratore just has time to deflect Carlos blades with blinding fast reflexes. Although one strike finds its mark, piercing Barratore's armor, he manages to deflect the other three. Behind him Brom tries to fend off Edwards razor sharp claws, but one swipe cuts deep across his cheek (7 dmg).

Mahka roars her triumph as the wolf easily falls before her and immediately searches for her next victim. Seeing Anthe in trouble she springs into action. Using the trees and brush as cover she circles around another wolf (or it that one a hound?) and unleashes yet another flurry. She bites into the base of the animals spine and rips into its flank, the angle of the attack was awkward so one claw has trouble finding its mark and brushes off the creatures side harmlessly.

Anthe, sensing that he no long in immediate danger surveys the scene. There are still quite a few more wolves left, but a new danger has arrived. Vampires he heard someone yell. Turns out his benefactor had other plans with them. This is something that he really should have sensed. Staying low to the ground he stalks towards the big Minotaur who was surrounded. Once in position he pounced! Launching himself at the vampire trying to slay his new compatriot. A furious ball of fur, teeth and claws comes flying out of the brush at the vampire, doing everything it can to do as much damage as it can.

"Get the spellcaster!" Brom yells as he continues to attack Edward, this time his blade managing to taste the cold blood flowing through the vampire's veins. Peza quickly switches back to her crossbow and snaps a bolt into place, her icy gaze locking onto Vincent. The bolt flies true and buries itself deep into his chest

Barratore admires the speed and skill of the vampire Carlos, speed and skill that Barratore felt far outmatched his own and as such decides it better to fight defensively until the League Adventurer's can regroup. Moments later Anthe, pounces on the vampire, launching himself forward, a furious ball of fur, teeth and claws. When all is said and done he is able to land two solid attacks on the undead abomination.

Close by Mahka roars her triumph as the tiger circles around another hound and unleashes yet another flurry. She bites into the base of the animals spine and rips into its flank, but somehow it still manages to stand and fight, if just barely.
(Do you have a special ability that allows you to move and still make a full attack? Normally moving and charging only allow for a single attack that turn.)

Gerox is torn on what way to go. His friends were in trouble but he decides to try and take out the spellcaster. He raises his hands and launches another empowered scorching ray at the wizard vampire trying to bring him down.
Only 1 ray hit. The way I understand scorching ray is that it does 4d6 points of fire damage, and that you need to roll to determine the damage. I rolled a 20 for your damage. The empowered feat increases this by 50% to 30 dmg. Am I interpreting this correct?

Edson then slashes out twice his longsword, but none connect. The elf was off due to switching weapons, and he is surprised when he sees his blade buried deep in the wolves hide, slaying the wolf.
(You were fighting a regular wolf, AC 14, your first attack hit. I rolled 7dmg on 1d8. That was enough to kill it.)

------------------------------------

Once again Vincent begin weaving his hands to send forth another deadly spell, BLAST he screams in pain as Peza's bolt penetrates his side and Gerox sends forth a schorching ray, causing the spell to fizzle.

All around you the wolves flank and snap, but in the end they cause little more than a distraction. It is the hounds that cause a problem. The seem driven as if compelled by a higher power. Mahka feels the large teeth and sharp claws of one tear into her (19dmg) while another's claws but into Brom's arm (8dmg)

Edward grins as his claws lash out at the Barbarian (7 dmg). Fool! Look at your wounds. You are already dead, your body just hasn't realized it yet!

Carlos then swings his long swords at Barratore. Once again they bounce harmlessly off his armor, but the fore of the attack leaves little doubt that anyone with less protection or thinner skin would not have survived such an attack.

Seeing his comrades begin to bleed out and tiring from the exertion of such a tough battle Gerox calls forth a spell of Haste to energize and strengthen his companions. Immediately he can see the difference as those fighters slowing and letting the tips of their blades drop find a renewed vigor and renew the fight in earnest.

Brom can feel the flow of his crimson life force draining from his body, another strong attack could be the end of him, but in his raging and newly enhanced state he continues his attack on Edward. With tremendous effort his blade slashes the mans once hansom face before piercing his heart. With one final effort he tries to take out the hound next to him as well, but the ferocious dog is too quick and avoids the blade.

A second later Peza feels the fiery gnome's magic washes over her and she fires a fusillade of bolts at Edward the deceiver, a grin of satisfaction creases her face as they all find a home in the vampires torso and the pale man falls unmoving at Brom's feet. "Speaking of dead bodies .... your mind will soon join your body in death .... your time has come .... Rum will be Free of Edward the deceiver and his ilk " Peza taunts the corpse.

Anthe Wardon, having landed two good hits on the undead creature redoubles his efforts, but this time the vampire is ready and easily dodges his attacks. Mahka, not happy that the hound in front of her is still standing flashes her teeth as she goes for her prey's hindquarters. As the animal bends its legs protect its haunches Mahka moves in for the jugular. As she pulls thrashes her head the hound turns into silver haired man and drops to the ground, his adventures in this realm finished as he moves on to those in the Shadow Realm.

Barratore feels the haste spell flow into him and switches to a more offensive approach. Just trying to score hits, and not so much of driving power with each hit.

The battle is intense as the League Adventurer's muscle bleeds out, but the re-death of Edward puts things back on an even playing field. Barratore manages to fight off the wolves attacks, but Brom succumbs to the hound attacks (6 dmg), just barely managing to cling to consciousness.

Despite his many injuries Carlos continues to attacks Barratore (26 dmg), his blades finding the weaknesses in the taurs armour.

Edward dies, or dissipates, and is gone. "RRRrrroooaaarrrrrr....." Brom let's out a bellowing roar as Edward falls. His eyes immediately turn to Carlos. The intimidating eyes of the vampires were nothing compared to will to kill in Brom's.

Barratore is in trouble and Brom moves to destroy more enemies. He steps closer to Carlos, 5-ft move, and brings down the BAS. His sword has devastating results against Carlos, but it remains to be see as to whether he split the wolf.

As Vincent vanishes you turn your attention and your fury on Carlos. Brom let's out a bellowing roar, his eyes turning to the remaining vampire as he moves in to put an end to his miserable unlife. In a wave of utter destruction his sword connects with the former man's torso as Barratore aims killing shot at his neck while both Peza and Gerox send a variety of mundane and magical missiles to his chest and Asthe rends the mans limbs from his body. The form that collapses unmoving on the ground is almost unrecognizable as humanoid by the time the attack is over, the crimson pulp unidentifiable.

Barratore and Edson quickly finish off the wolves and Mahka takes out the remaining lycanthrope hound, its now humanoid corpse leaving little doubt as to the origin of the unusually large wolves being spawned in the area. The area is quiet, and with Vincent apparently having fled the rest of the forest is silent and unmoving, as if afraid of disturbing the Iron adventurers.

Looking about the battle site, some of your armor showing more blood than metal, Gerox raises the question of what to do with the corpses, suggesting they be staked with their heads cut off in addition to seeking healing for the injured.

Barratore then focuses in on Gerox and after asking him to repeat whatever it was that he was saying, Barratore will follow up. Carlos' and Edwards heads are removed and whatever it is they can use to pass for a stake, gets driven into the ground through their chest.

"Little surprised we are not setting them on fire as well Gerox." The immediate rush of the combat is beginning to fade and Barratore looks about the deep night. "Back to the mansion and we take it apart.?"

Gerox points out the magical items and starts stripping them off the dead as he asks the others stake and cut off heads...which no one else feels the need to do (i.e. no one has posted that they do this). Perhaps something about the act makes them feel uncomfortable.

"Are you sure these guys were vampires? Didn't the pirate vampire turn to gas when we took him down? Broms says as the first of the vampires is staked. Although it is fairly obvious to most that the hunting party contained three vampires Peza notes that like humans different vampires are likely to have different tactics.

Knowledge spellcraft or arcana 15 to display Highlight to display spoiler: {Not all vampires utilize gasous form to retreat back to their coffins at 0 hit points (which is what I assume happened in your past encounter). After thinking about it you realize that these vampires used gassous form previosuly. Edward used it for his entrance in a staged event calculated to convince you that he couldn't possibly be a vampire, since he appeared while the sun was still in the sky. Shortly before sundown, Edward left the house in gaseous form, floated secretly down from the mansion, then assumed human form and walked toward the party grounds. He timed his entrance so that his Endure Sunlight feat could keep him comfortable for the 10 seconds or so he would have to spend in the sunlight. The other vamps trailed you on the hunt in gassous form so that they were all but undetectable until they resumed physical form and summoned wolves to attack you. You also reason that the werewolves had to have been dominated by the vampires and we under their control, perhaps there is a limit to how many people can be dominated at once...}

As the others quaff potions, which Gerox looks on enviously upon, Gerox will make sure that the two vampires are both beheaded and staked. "I think we need to bury the bodies as well. Nice and deep! I don't want vengeful vampires knocking on my door someday but that can wait for now. If we are going back to the mansion, we need to move. Gerox stands back and watches as the others quaff potions and supervises the beheading and staking of the vampires. "I think we need to bury the bodies as well. Nice and deep! I don't want vengeful vampires knocking on my door someday. He then expresses his concern that the fleeing vampirer sorcerer might arrive at the mansion ahead of you and take anything of value.

Brom and Barratore finish sharing some potions before going into the forest with Edson, the former Lord Kazil, and fashioning long stakes from the saplings around the area and drives them into the group through the hearts of the vampires. Each of the stakes are driven several feet into the ground and protrude upwards several feet as well. There is no way this undead will rise again, and soon the rising sun will destroy the remains.

Peza then turns to their newest ally ... " you did well back there ... for a few minutes i thought you might have been with Edward ... but guess you were duped by him ... glad to have you join us ... " with a look at the big cat near Anthe's side " your friend too " grins Peza. It seems proving ones self in battle is one of the best ways to earn a groups' trust and respect.

As the dirty work is finished Edson offers to lead the way back to the mansion, drawing his bow and taking point. On either side Anthe and Mahka both bound off the train and into the brush, staying close to the party, but trying to remain undetected from any more such ambushes. As the adrenaline leaves his body, Anthe realizes just how hurt he is and casts a spell to remedy that.

As you arrive at the mansion Vincent blasts twice on the ancient horn as several of the servants quickly exit the building, their eyes scanning the woods before stopping and staring at you.

The servants run out of the house and hear the thunderous booming of Brom's voice shouting warning. I am Brom. I am DEATH. Face me and I'll take your life! Everyone stops in their tracks and stares as the small gnome tells them to stay where they are before sending forth fire that rends the sky....

The crowd erupts in to applause before the gnome can continue and watch the show. Cameron walks forward, hand extended. Thank you! We have been the unwilling servants of Edward for many years, kept under his control by his threats and ability to to dominate a man's will. I will not tell you how he has used it to punish of for the most minor of infractions...and for those that the really get on his bad side...The last time a woman tried to escape he tracked her husband down and turned him into one of his hunting dogs, forever to be dominated and under his control. The despair in his eyes is undeniable. Anyway, we could hear the fighting and the sound of the wolves from here. Then suddenly Carora quit walking on all fours and we knew his power had ceased.

As you look out at the former "servants" we note that they are eager to leave and are taking anything of value which is not nailed down.

Seeing his fearsome display of pyrotechnics being viewed as making a dramatic entrance rather than intimidating, Gerox goes with the flow and bows to them smiling. "We were glad to be of service freeing you from your bondage, slavery and the occasional being made into a meal. Don't you think that we deserve the first pick of the loot for that service? Also you need to be warned that one of the vampires did escape. The one who cast spells is still lurking about somewhere. If you could direct us to his coffin, it might be helpful so we can put him down as well.

One of the servants merely shrug. We have been captive and worked hard for years, don't you think we deserve to be paid so we can restart our lives? At the mention of one of the vampires escaping several of the servants begin leaving again, determined to flee before it returns. At mention of the coffins Cameron nods and responds. We only recently moved in, much of the Lord's stuff has yet to be shipped from New Elenna. Only the first floor is furnished, and perhaps the basement. There is a door leading down from the study, but none of us are allowed down there, not even to clean. As for his study, we are only allowed in there when he is present. Some of the cooks say the room has been cursed, but Edwards ability to dominate a person's will is enough to keep anyone from entering. You'll probably find it undisturbed. Most of us just want to get out of here and escape this place, perhaps return to our homes across the sea or start a new life here. No sense on tempting fate.

Barratore folds his arms across his chest, disappointed that the vampire had gotten away while Peza, somewhat relieved that the servants are free from the vampires influence is still unsure about Vincent and heads directly towards Edwards office. As she moves out Anthe and Mahka both move from the tree line, Anthe taking his human shape.

It does not take long for you to find Edward's office, and as Cameron predicted, the threat of a curse combined with the fear that the vampires might not truly be gone has been enough to keep the servants from entering. The room is simply furnished with a nicely carved oak desk covered in papers and a chair on either side of it and a fine couch in the corner of the room. On the back wall you spot a heavy wooden door with steel hinges and a strong lock.

Peza immediately moves to the desk and starts looking through the papers. Several of them are related to the sale of various businesses in Rum, sale papers that have been signed, but not yet submitted and therefore not yet official and incomplete. Beneath that is a piece of parchment sealed with red wax.

As you are aware, we have suffered several setbacks recently and have a few problems that need to be dealt with. The men we hired were unable to prevent the minotaur captain from reaching the island, forcing us to change our plans. The cow is no longer a hindrance and is to be left alone, but make sure her "League Adventurers" will not interfere in our plans again.

We also need you to locate a man named Jacaret and make sure he does not reveal his plans. He is a tall fixer identifiable by his silver cloak containing the symbol of Alemi, three overlapping silver circles contained withing a third circle.

You take little caution as you descend the dank stone stairs, moving forward until they suddenly level off. As you reach the bottom Brom's ever scanning eyes detect the circular brick curb of what is evidently a great well in the earthen floor. As he walks nearer, his eyes enchanted with dark vision, he can see that it must be five feet across, with walls a good foot thick and some six inches above the ground level--solid work from some long forgotten age. Inside it hang three long chains supporting an empty cage, a terrible dark prison for any who might cross Edward.

On the far side of the room are three oak coffins, two of which are open and lined with an inch of dirt in the bottom, the third sealed with its lid down.

It is well known that vampires will often flee to their coffins when wounded regenerate and avoid the damaging and draining effects of the sun light, which would be well risen before the vampire could reach Rum, still the sight catches many off guard. Concerned, Gerox scans it for magical traps, but detects the lingering aura of an invisibility spell inside.

Barratore stands over the wooden box and cautiously 'opens it' by sending his blade through the lid and rending it in two. As the top splits Peza raises her crossbow and lets the line snap, sending a bolt where she believes the invisible undead sorcerer to be and Anthe stands guard in case the monster escapes.

Slowly dark and half congealed blood stains the satin fabric lining coffin. A second later the body materializes into view lasting only moments before crumbling to dust.

With the tip of the blade, he pushes some of the dust about to spread it out. Was anything hidden within? Perhaps. The creature was destroyed and now it was again time for Edson and Gerox to do their thing. Check for secret compartments and magic.

Barratore looks back to Peza and Brom. "Next time, I'll just open it normal like and you can stick your hand or face in the coffin. Might be more exciting that way." He chuckles.

As the corpse turns to ash you find it hard to believe the ordeal is over. Despite the fact that sorcerer had been clinging to the last remnants of its unlife some are surprised to have ended things so quickly, although Edson had no doubt that this would be the inevitable end of one who crosses the league adventurers.

Seeing the battle over Gerox begins searching the coffin for any precious belonging that the vampire might no longer have use for. Peeling back the satin from the wood frame the sorcerer finds an adorned silver cloak with a fading aura. Although it appears normal now, you are fairly certain this had been a legacy item of some power that before its owner lost need of it. Beneath it lays a silver ring inlaid with a red sunstone.

Peza looks at the dust in the coffin for a moment before accepting the fact that the last of the vampires is really dead. As the help flees the mansion that has been their prison since arriving on the island young girl takes the opposite approach and raids what remains of the kitchen with Brom figuring that it would be safer to spend the night here than travel through the woods at night and risk another wolf attack.

Although the forcibly indentured servants have fled with almost everything of value, you are still able to find two bottles of 12 year old scotch hidden behind some books. The mansion is nearly empty of people at this point, and those few that remain only do so because they are debating on setting the house on fire before they leave to put an end to their nightmares once and for all. Although they dislike the idea of anyone spending the night upon hearing your plans they agree not to burn the building down and leave into the darkness towards Rum. Searching the kitchen you find a large loaf of bread and some cheese in the back of a cupboard, not quite the feast you had earlier, but enough to keep you satisfied.

After building a fire in the fireplace you relax and explore the rest of the mansion at your leisure. Edson finds a few interesting decorations that were left behind for various reasons. A painting of a full moon rising over a shadowy moor, a dark tapestry depicting the New Ellena at night, and strange poem presumably written by the departed.

I lived a life of theft and lies
Was a man of great despise
I paid the debt such men must pay
My death to be a great display
Imagine then their great surprise
When in the darkness I did rise

The night passes uneventfully and you awake with the rising sun, unsure where to start when you tell the tale of what happened to Ceri or how she will react to the news you give her.

Ooc: I have to admit, I was caught off guard with the last vampire. The description I had said they would return to their coffin to regenerate if they escaped, and since I didn't make a contingency plan ahead of time I didn't think it fair to devise one for the vampire after the fact.

Barratore exits with Brom for the larder and pantry. Upon finding mostly bare cupboards the nagging thought that eluded hiim earlier about letting the servants take everything surfaces again. "This is why you don't let everyone help themselves!" he thunders as his kicks in an empty cupboard door in frustration. Brom had put in his mind they would be feasting and well now they are not. The powerful minotaur copes with disappointment by physically destroying several kitchen cabinets.

Barratore discovers that this stuff called scotch is horrid. There would be lager and ale later then, back in Rum. When the topic of burning the house down, Barratore growls deeply at the suggestion. Especially as he is going to be in the building that night.

Upon hearing the poem, Barratore grumbles, "And there's another." The Minotaur claims the couch and stretches out upon it after sliding it towards the fireplace. "We're sleeping here, cause Brom and I aren't trudging back through the woods til morning Gerox." As he closes his eyes he waves a hand, "Wake me for my watch Brom"

Morning light splashes across Barratore's face and he rises. Fishing out some rations and washing it down with water he looks to Gerox, "Already got a base camp. You want the WLA to all move out here? Not sure we'd all fit?"

The night passes quietly and those standing guard hear little to cause alarm. As the sun rises you pack you bags and return to the city. Along the way you notice the trail is well worn now, trampled by the passage of the fleeing servants, and it remains that way all the way up to the city wall.

Rum is already awake with peddlers selling their goods and merchants offering a simple breakfast of rolls or muffins for a copper or two. Every week it seems like the streets are more crowded with citizens and merchants as the incoming ships dock and some aboard seek to find a new home. As you enter the WLA you see Ceri in her usual spot, reading the days mail. On either side of the table are several new faces, though you recognize Cameron and a few of the others as having been among those that fled the mansion the night before.

Please, have a seat. The large minotaur says as she lays down a letter sealed with red wax and motions to the empty spots at the table. These guests were inspired by your bravery last night and are seeking initiation into the WLA.

That's right! Cameron says. Most of the others are pooling their resources to open an inn, I have had enough of that type of work to last me a life time.

Ceri gives him a quick look and Cameron returns to his breakfast of eggs and sausage. As you can see, we were made aware of your success last night. There are no pressing matters at this time, just a few missing persons we have been asked to look into. She says as she points to a few of the parchment before her. Once you have filled me in on the details of last night you may have the rest of the day off.

ooc: Sorry for the missed post on Friday. Sprint no longer has coverage at my in laws, and I had planned to post from my tablet. I am back in town and on break, so there should be no more missed posts. I should have your XP calculated tomorrow.

Missing persons he could nothing about and so that bit of information quickly leaves his mind. He needed to hit the Catacombs and purchase some more potions and then get lunch. As he eats Peza fills Ceri in on the events of the night before and introduces the newest member to join your group and Brom tells her about the letter that makes him believe there might be a price on your heads.

Ceri considers this a moment. I will ask around and see if I can learn anything of this letter or why someone might be after you. In the meantime, the city has a favor to ask of you, one they claim you already agreed to help with. The town council has put together an official guard that local protection groups can bring criminals to so that they can be tried accordingly, as opposed to the protection groups carrying out such justice as they see fit. The guard will also intervene when they witness crimes taking place and handle those problems too large for protection groups to handle. Do to your reputation, they would like your advice in how best to carry out these tasks, particularly when it come to the issue of deadly force when a criminal is resisting arrest or putting others in danger. Please, take your time on this matter. Such a decision could greatly effect the development of the city.

As you all eat and consider Ceri's words, Gerox starts examining the magical items you found in the mansion, picking them up one at a time and carefully examining the intricate detail for any clue as to their hidden powers. One by one he notes an odd reflection of the light or intertwining of metal lattice that bind some magic to the treasure...

As you discuss how to approach the issue Ceri watches, approving of much of the logic behind your arguments and reasoning. Keep in mind that these guidelines are for the city guard. The local protection groups have been instructed to use "no more force than is necessary" and to avoid the taking of life except under the most extreme of circumstances. Violation of these rules can get their status as a protection group revoked or even result in charges of murder or manslaughter against those involved.

I told the guards that you would be needing some down time after your last adventure. I expect you will have some shopping to do, and I believe some still need to get some training in.

Edson lets the others choose their items first, and will choose from the remaining pile. He selects the belt, that suposedly will help him move faster(as if he needed that). "This will do" he says to the others, awaiting for them to go to the catacombs, and head with them.

OOC: Will take the Dex belt

OOC: Here is the treasure list and sale values. Divided equally there is about 4800 gold each, which doesn't account for any division that would change if PC's keep items.

Ooc: I don't want the Cloak of Protection+1.. and Bronx taking the Ring of Protection +2 correct? If so an no one wants the ring of protection +1 I'll take that also.

OOC: I don't think I'm going to have Brom take the ring. He needs the gold to buy healing potions. So the Ring of Protection +2 is still available.

After ordering a few drinks Brom and Barratore ask Old Salty if he has heard anything out of the ordinary lately.
Ahh, the winds be blowing out of the East. There be adventure to be had. Something about it stirs the blood. It was the Eastern Wind that caused the stirring in me so many years ago. I got the itch for adventure and and stowed away on the Asterion. I just acted like I was supposed to be there and joined in scrubbing the deck and hiding in the life boats to sleep at night. By the time someone realized I wasn't actually crew they had already accepted me and let me stay on board. Mark my word, with the shipping guild making a killing on the Leviathan Shrimp and transporting them across the Wold there will be many a boy looking to do as I did.

Seeing the look on Broms face Old Salty gets the impression Brom is more interested in local news and recent happenings. There has been a slight increase in crime lately. Seems the more boats come the more unscrupulous folk come with it. At first I feared what the protection groups might do to them they catch, but it seems the city guard be keepin an eye on the protection. Make sure a man get a proper trial just like on the main lad.

Did you hear of those bodies they discovered? Puncture wounds in the neck, like something was drinking their blood. For a while I though someone must have caught a thief and taken justice by their own hand, but now some people are opening an inn, claiming to have been dominated by vampires and just set free. Haven't talked to them myself yet. Not sure if it's true. May be it is, maybe it aint. Be curious to know.

As they discuss current events the rest of the League Adventurer's continue examining the items brought back from the mansion, the items considerably more valuable than what the city would have paid.

"Fishin' fer the big shrimp is exciting. We," he nods at Barratore, "had to end some threats to the big shrimp fishin'. They're some big things that eat those things. We fought a giant squid. That was definitely fun. Wouldn't ya say Barratore?"

"Ok, we've heard about the protection groups. I like ta spend my time down here, but I ain't in a lot. Local groups could be useful."

"We did hear about the bodies, and WLA handled it. No more vamp problems, and if anymore show up...we'll turn'em ta dust." He says and gives Barratore a forearm to the shoulder.

Other than that conversation, Brom picks up some drinks and food for the three adventurers. And he will pick Old Salty's brain for stories and not necessarily about local stuff. Brom will tell his own stories. He will talk about his trip to Rum, including the hell hounds and the sahaguin and his trip to the taur lands.

Everyone decide what items they want from the treasure so we can finalize this. You all should be able to edit it. Just put your character's name next to the item.
