The Tree of Parting

The Tree of Parting - Co DM Dan K
Friday August 15th, 2014 9:31:17 AM

Out of the crowd, a cleric of Gargul introduces himself as Caius and offers to heal the party of their wounds from the road. From his look, he is not a resident but a man who also came to the tree seeking adventure himself. The dwarfs, Durbin and Korbiss have secured their wagon and tell you that they have added the treasure the party has to their listed manifest with everyone in the party by name as the owners. "Your valuables are perfectly safe friends. You can split the gold of course, but no shops of weapons and such will be open during a Chancers Club ball." Durbin and Korbiss each take a small coin purse from the wagon and blend into the crowd, renewing their discussion on who won and who lost the bet.

It takes nearly an hour to get through the crowd to TreeTops
Eventually the Party arrives and the Captain is located in the throng of partiers. With a big smile, a tankard of ale and hearty slap on the shoulder of Atlas he welcomes the group and commends them on a job well done. "Faith my friends. I have an eye and said to hold faith." he calls to the gathered crowd. Shaking everyone's hand, he individually congratulates Mack, Lilith, Bonivus and Altas. VonKlempt quickly looks Crosseye up and down, judging his stance and build. A mental decision made and a small nod he extends his hand to Crosseye. "You have come in with my men, and so I welcome you as well."

The captain shouts for the group to receive a round on him. It arrives and he toasts the group a well done task once again. He also produces 100gp hardship pay for each member of the party.
"Go enjoy the money and your time. A Chancers Club Ball is not something to simply watch. Go" He hoists his glass again and the party is escorted from Tree Tops

From your vantage you can now take in the whole of the festival. On the ground you can see 4 archery ranges and dozens of tables of chance. You also note 2 stages for performers, a wrestling pit and more drinking than perhaps you have ever even heard of.

I really enjoy the excitement, celebration, and merriment all around, but not quite as fond of the crowds. I wander about a bit just to take it in a little, and then try to find a quieter place to just settle down and relax. Maybe a small creek nearby somewhere, to take the volume level down a notch?

OOC: Going to be out of town again camping next week, but as with last time, I believe I will be able to take my turn daily when we go into town for ice cream. :)

Caius listens to VonKlempt and then, as Atlas, Crosseye, Lilith, and Mack peer over the railing at the ball below, he tightens his fingers around the wooden symbol now in his hands and utters a short prayer to Gargul (Channel Energy = 6). "Be healed," he says, "and know that Gargul is pleased with you this day." Caius begins to move off and towards the ball. "I must attend my God. It has been a pleasure to both meet and serve you. Should you allow me on your next adventure -- and I would very much like to join you -- you will find me below, in prayer." Caius makes his way down the tree and to a relatively quiet glen outside the aura of revelry. He bends his knees, drops his head, and begins to thank Gargul for both life and death ([i]Gargul spends and hour in prayer, preparing Guidance, Resistance, Virtue, Cure Light Wounds, and Shield of Faith[/i).

Atlas offers his hand to Caius as he departs. "Thank you for your assistance Caius! Our group could use a healer, but I don't want to make any assumptions. We'll talk it over and let you know either way. Please thank your god for us as well, it is much appreciated."

As Caius heads off Atlas turns to the rest of the group. "Well, we need a healer. He's a bit on the sheepish side, so I'm inclined to look around a little more before we talk to him, but this is a group decision. Thoughts?"

Atlas enjoys the view as the rest of the group weighs in. The feelings of warmth, hope, and happiness have been overwhelming since the moment of their arrival. He decides to just smile and soak it all up. It's not every day you get to enjoy a party at one of the wonders of the world!

Rather than partaking in the activities Atlas decides to just roam and take it all in. However, first the decision on Caius. He downs the round bought by the captain and waits for the group's decision.

I realize I really stink still... especially from the goblin brains all over my hands. Instead of meditating first when I find that creek, I go for a swim (if it's not the main source of drinking water for the area).

I follow the lead of Atlas and extend my hand to the captain, but wonder what was the once over and hesitation all about. I make a mental note and will have to ask the captain at some point later but now let everyone enjoy the ball. I do ask the captain if there is a place to rest as being road tired. With that and me not being a party person much I sink back into the shodows of the party, keeping low key as as possible.

To Atlas's question our group could use a healer no matter how strange they are, but with caution. We should keep a close eye one him until he has earned our true trust, remember we all are a bit strange!

Caius finishes praying and starts roaming through the Ball, taking in the sights, sounds, and wonders. He keeps an eye out for members of the party, hoping to find someone with whom to spend his time. He cannot help but notice the common folk shying away from him and his gray cloak, which signifies one who honors the god of life and death, Gargul.

The Tree of Parting - Co DM Dan K

The group is healed by the cleric of Gargul, Caius. The cleric also expresses an interest in joining the group. Atlas thinks it is a good idea, but wants to speak with the others first. The group gets escorted out of Treetops Inn and find themselves on one of the lower levels. It is just as crowded here as up above and at ground level. The group splits up a bit from there. Mack heads to the ground, thinking he might find a quiet spot near a water source. The grounds about the tree are covered in wagons, supplies, makeshift camps and beasts of burden. Guards of the Mailed Fist and owners of the wagons are scattered about at well. There is stream or other surface wart source. There are however, full water troughs for the animals, but no apparent source of the water that flows into them from a spit. Perhaps an underground well has been tapped or perhaps a less mundane means is at work. Mack is able to find a spot out at the very fringe of the makeshift camps where the party is a dull din in the background

Crosseye finds himself being whisked away from the captain and others he now suspects are of importance in the Treetops Inn. His question is answered by one of the men ushering the group away. An elf with impeccable attire and posture. His lithe form seems to hardly register upon the wooden walkway. "You and the others will be bunking in whatever camp you wish to erect upon the ground. All locations within the tree and occupied. Captain VonKlempt is quiet correct and you enjoy The Chancers Ball while you have such a rare opportunity. Such things are not extended to your class often. " With that he closes the small get that leads to Treetops that you just stepped through, and returns up the steps

Bonivus heads to the ground and finds himself at a wrestling ring. Anyone can enter, fee is 7gp and the winner takes home 10gp. Pin your opponent to win. Bonivus notices that he is the only taur about. The current match is between a pair of strong looking humans.

Atlas stays with Crosseye and both notice the cleric of Gargul hanging out nearby. Likely waiting on the answer to his question. They also notice a gnome nearby as well. The gnome obviously has something on his mind, and seems to be trying to think of an approach

Don't forget the 6HP of healing all

"Crosseye, you certainly have a knack for bringing clarity to a situation!" Atlas lets out a laugh. It feels good to laugh after all that they have been through. "Lets grab the healer and go get washed up. What better way to get to know someone than while at a party?"

Atlas looks around and sees the cleric in the distance. To Crosseye, "Well, he proved he can heal, but he's never going to be of value as a spy...could it be more obvious that he's keeping an eye on us?" With another laugh, Atlas heads over to Caius.

"Caius, we talked it over and we would be delighted to have you join us. Your skills will be extremely valuable as we deal with the adventures to come. We typically divide what we find evenly, so you'll get your share. I'm not sure what your motivation is, but we'll do our best to keep you entertained as long as we can. What say you?" Atlas looks at Caius with a warm smile on his face, waiting for an answer.

After Caius's answer Atlas asks Crosseye and Caius if they'd like to accompany him as he finds a place to get cleaned up and claims a decent spot for their camp. After which, he heads back to take in the rest of the festivities, hopefully with Caius and Crosseye so that they can talk and get to know each other.

Caius, for the first time in a long time, smiles and claps Atlas on the shoulder. "Well met, friend. I would be honored to join your party. My only motivation is to serve Gargul and, right now, I think that means adventuring with you. In fact, I haven't had a drink in ages. What say you, Crosseye, and me grab an ale--or something stiffer? I would relish the opportunity to know your stories."

Bonivus finds a man that seems to be in charge of the ring and those wanting to wrestle. He nods yes to Bonivus' question, "Taurs are welcome indeed. I will put you in the next match." He directs Bonivus towards a table where he can put down his money and sign in.

Crosseye and Atlas welcome Caius and look to purchase some drinks after picking out a place on the ground near the tree to call theirs later. An easier task may never have existed. No sooner are you looking, than a lovely elf woman comes by and hands each of the trio a drink. She looks for no money and is gone in a flash, her head looking for others who might be looking for more drink. Part of the sight strike you odd and then it hits you, she no tray of any kind. Where did the drinks come from?
"Hey there! You're one of the ones that came in late aren't you?" a man calls from a table nearby. Whether he addresses Atlas or Crosseye, is unknown and perhaps unimportant. "Come sit and have a drink with us" Two others look over and hoist their glasses.

Mack arrives at a good spot, just as Bonivus enters the ring matched up to a muscular looking human. A man in fine clothes steps into the ring and speaks, "Match is for a pin upon my count and decision as to the victor. My decision is final. There will be no lethal strikes. You begin when ready."

The human holds a hand up in greeting and nods to Bonivus. He then assumes a more aggressive stance and moves several feet closer, but not into the minotaurs reach

Atlas is thoroughly enjoying himself. He takes a moment to imprint the lovely elf woman into his mind, takes a swig of his drink, and heads over to the table with Caius and Crosseye.

He spends his time telling tales of their journey to the group that called them over, the loss of the witch, the battles with the Goblins, the bet between the dwarfs. He doesn't embelish too much, but he clearly highlights the heroic efforts of his companions as they struggled with the green skins. He calls out Crosseye for his endurance and constant care of the group after the battle. There might have been a few comments about being a nursemaid, but all in good fun! He also chides Caius on why his god didn't foresee their needs and head out to help earlier. He claps him heftly on the back to let him know it is all in good fun.

Lilith - Co DM Dan K

The Liontaur comes up slowly behind Atlas and Crosseye and puts her hand gently on Atlas' shoulder. "I know we spoke of staying here and seeing what adventures the wilds about this wonder might hold, but..." Her eyes drift off a minute as she seems to partially struggle with the decision she has been thinking on for a little while now. "But I have decided that I am going to continue on with the caravan to Emerald City. take care my friends, you will always be close to me through our bond of combat formed on the road from Edenmoor. Besides," she adds with a smile, "Emerald City is not so far and caravans come back and forth all the time. Perhaps I'll be back."

Lilith smiles and departs to find Mack and Bonivus as well. Locating them at the wrestling ring she sits down next to Mack to cheer on Bonivus to victory so she may say her goodbyes to both of them.

OoC Hayley is going walk about as many real life projects have pounced on her. Hopefully she will be back when things settle. The Wold is leaving her access in tact so she can drop back in and her character is perfectly safe and will be able to step back in when she is able as well.

Caius laughs before responding to Atlas, "Gods aren't dictators, and we have free choice in all that we do. Gargul isn't a crystal ball, but one who oversees the balance between life and death. He has no desire to step in a stop your death, but he has every desire to balance your death with life. And right now, he smiles and lifts his drink, Gargul demands we enjoy our lives to the fullest. For not even he knows when our last adventure will come to pass. Caius drinks heavily from his cup. "But tell me, you obviously defended yourself well on the road, where did you learn such techniques?"

As Lilith walks up and tells both Atlas and Crosseye about her desire to leave, Caius remains silent and respectful.

At;as Caius and Crosseye talk and joke with each other and tell of their tales on the road to the others at the table. All of the men listen and nod at the tale. Tankards are hoisted and toasts are made. Soon another man, dressed with an apron and carrying a pair of small kegs arrives at the table. "Good work." he says to Crosseye and Atlas, just catching the end of the tale. He sets the kegs on the table, Produces a new ceramic mug for everyone and starts to pour everyone at the able a glass from one of his small kegs.

The mugs are distributed and the man continues, "Rules are quite simple. On a 3 count you lift and drink. I'll refill if everyone finishes and pour the second and final round." Crosseys and Caius drink up and set their mugs down. The other three men at the table attempt to do likewise and 2 of them roll off their chairs. The bartender smiles and chuckles a bit at the comments coming from everyone on the taste of the ales. "Chancer Club secret ale." The men who blacked out are all ready getting back to their feet, though a bit unstable still. The bartender pours a second mug, this time from the other mini keg that he had set at the table. Crosseye, Caius and the other man who successfully finished the first round are given a drink. A wisp of smoke rises from the liquid and carries with it, the smell of oak.

Atlas slides the drink back to the man who poured it, declining. The man smiles, "Not for everyone sir, very good." Atlas slides back. He notes nothing other than men and women of just about every noble race simply having a good time down here at the ground level festivities. Most seem to be merchants and almost certainly came in with the great caravan, then there are the Mailed Fist temp guards like himself. The only thing that partially stands out is Bonivus and Lilith seem to be the only taurs. Although what is going on higher up in the tree, Atlas does not know. Other then laughter, music and the sounds of a generally good time being had by those individuals as well.

Bonivus grabs his opponent by the arm and pulls him to himself and down. The man lets out a grunt as he moves into the taurs stomach with his shoulder. Twisting his own arm he grabs Bonivus by the wrist and reverses the hold. Gaining the upper hand for the moment.

Mack cheers on Bonivus. The crowd is a good size, about 30 spectators. Most of them don't appear to be cheering for either wrestler, but in appreciation of what is looking to be a good match. Mack does notice that the gnome next to him is cheering directly for Bonivus

Atlas begins to feel at ease as the festivities seem to be completely under control. He makes no attempt to hide that he's finally beginning to relax, at least as best as he knows how.

He continues to enjoy the entertainment and gives Caius a big slap on the back after he downs the second drink. "Caius my friend, you hold your own much better than I would have expected. You may be our secret weapon the next tavern we come across! Come on Crosseye, don't let him embarrass you!"

Turning to the bartender Atlas raises his voice to be heard over the crowd, "Is that smoke from heat or just the concoction? By the reactions this stuff is more for the mind than the tongue!"

Atlas glances over towards the wrestling ring and is surprised to see Bonvius being grappled by a man much smaller than himself. Just goes to show that size and strength are not everything. Realizing that Bonivus won't hear him no matter how loud he yells, Atlas sends him a positive thought and refocuses on the game at hand.

A few of which hang to the bridge of his narrow pointy nose, and in front of his eyes as well. His ears are pierced with three black studs in his left and two golden leaves in his right. Other than a battle axe hanging from his hip, he looks to be unarmed.

So, this is what all the fuss is about! Looks like a good match, lets see what happens!"

He looks around at the others watching the match. Hearing something about Boni! he asks,

SO, who is who?

"We'll I guess my turn again. Here goes nothing." and I grab the second drink and down it. (Fort save - 17) I slam the tankard and the table "Done!" With all this drinking and celebration, I think to myself I need to slow down or I will regret it in the morning.

"Well done, Crosseye!" Caius shouts above the din. That is enough for me,[/] he thinks. [i]I must retire, for who knows what the night may bring? He turns to Atlas and says, "My friend, have you any mind what our next adventure might be?"

"I agree Caius, that's enought for me also. I think it is time for me to seek a bed and get some rest. Atlas I will be at our camp if you need me, but enjoy." With that I collect any money owed ( not sure if I meet challenge) and head to our camp.

At the camp I find a nice and quite place to roll out my bed roll and take my armor off, store my weapons away and lay down to get some sleep. My head is spinning a bit and falling asleep was fast to my tried body.

Bonivus shifts and takes back the control in the grapple. Bonivus gets a hold on his opponents thigh and lifts that leg. the man's balance shifts severely as he tries to press his leg free and re-establish his wide footing, but it is no use. Bonvius has him and the match is quickly spinning to conclusion. A huge roar of cheers and applause erupt bout the ring as the spectators sense the victory.
Next to Mack, a gnome introduces himself as Jazzy and strikes up a conversation about the call of adventure.

All about ground level are contests, games, singing, dancing and music. Mack can see a few throwing games, some involve weapons and others balls the size of his fist. There is a pair of archery targets, cards and what seems like a wizard casting spells for participants to try and correctly name. Arm wrestling, a rope climb and more drinking and eating then one might consider possible. At one such drinking table, Mack spots Crosseye, Caius the Gargul cleric and Atlas. It appears that Caius and Crosseye just won.

The other man still at the table hoists his mug and as he drinks, keeps on moving backwards until he falls out of his chair. A roaring laugh comes from the small crowd that had gathered about and then a cheer for the two victors still seated at the table. the Bartender smiles and shakes his head, the 'smoke' is just a reaction of the liquid to the air. No temperature. He then laughs heartily adding, "And no sir, none of this is meant for the enjoyment of the tongue." He gestures to a different few tables, "You want to visit those on that order." The bartender produces another bag of coins and gives one to Caius and Crosseye.
"Well done friends at completing one of the Chancer Challenges. Enjoy the rest of the your night.

Caius and Crosseye each receive 10gp.

On the thought of finding somewhere quiet, as any move to the section where you plan to sleep it becomes evident that the party is everywhere. There is no out of the way quiet place to go. A quick inquiry reveals the bulk of the Chancers Club Ball will end at midnight. There may be a few after hours meetings, but no one in the party need worry about those. All in all, the ground level will be nice a quiet by midnight, allowing for plenty of sleep to be had by all

OoC if no one in the group is going to enter any other challenges/games/watnots, I'll move us along

Welcome Jazzy

Caius moves through the crowd to find a quiet place to rest. Gargul preserve me,he thinks, I am once more among the living. Finding a spot on the ground level, he relaxes and takes in the Tree of Parting, the Chancers Club Ball, and those partaking in the merriment and revelry. As the noises eventually drift, he falls asleep, dreaming of long forgotten memories.

Bonivus uses his new advantage to pin his opponent to the ground once the match is pronounced over Bonivus gets up and whipes himself off with a towle proffered by one of the spectators. The shakes his opponent's had and the hand of the judge. He finally pumps the air with his fists a few times to the crowd's pleasure and then heads out of the ring.

Replacing his shirt he looks around for his friends and more importantly the man who would pay him.

OOC: d20+11=31 ;Grapple check with bonus for controling the grapple, I just assumed the fight was to the pin, seemed senseless to have it continue on too much longer. Plus you implied I was going to win.

Atlas gives a big cheer for Caius and Crosseye as the last man falls! He's beaming from ear to ear and couldn't be happier for his friends. "Caius, I'm not exactly sure yet. I know the caravan moves on, but I'm thoroughly enchanted by this place. Let's check with the Captain in the morning to see what advice he might have in regards to local opportunities. After that we'll need to hit the shops!"

Atlas watches his friends head back for the night and he takes the time to wander around a bit longer and soak up the atmosphere. When midnight rolls around and the crowd thins out he heads back to their small patch of earth and puts down his bedroll. Staring up at the tree he is still amazed at this place. It takes him quite a while to finally close his eyes and get some sleep.

Bonivus lifts again on the mans leg and wrenches him to the left and subsequently to the ground. They hit hard, Bonivus on top and despite the best efforts of his opponent, the match is over with the judge calling Bonivus the winner by pin. The group about the ring cheers and money exchanges a few hands. Others slap each other on the back and head towards one of the many open bar tables. The man extends his hand to the judge and to Bonivus as well. "About 6 seconds longer than I thought I would last" he says with a breathing grin, he heads out.
Bonivus locates the man with the money, who comes to him and hands him a small bag. "Well done master taur.
Bonivus receives 10gp

Bonivus locates the others, being over 9' tall is a great advantage when scanning a crowd, and meets up with Caius, Crosseye, Atlas and Mack. The Halfling monk has made a friend, a gnome calling himself Jazzy

The group lies down and notes that as the night has worn on, the music has shifted from a more dancing high tempo beat, to a more mellow relaxing melody. Lights are dimming and shifting to more violet and indigo hues and the Ball is taking on a more subdued tone all around. In all there is definitely a conscious effort by the Chancers Club to begin the wrap up of the Ball.

Crosseye and Atlas stand almost no chance and are dead asleep in moments. In the morning the plan is to speak to Captain VonKlempt on perhaps foregoing the second half of the journey and stay at the Tree. There was also a fine haul of gear and gold to divide up and perhaps upgrade and fill in missing essential gear. A peaceful night would have been nice, and certainly well earned.

Alas, it is not to be.

Everyone is jolted awake at some time well after midnight. The ground explodes nearby, sending shockwaves through each of you and showering you in dirt and chunks of grass. Only low lanterns and a few torches provide any light to the area below the Tree. The cry of horses and the scared braying of mules fills the air about you as the panicked animals look for the source of their fright and to get away from it. They pull in all directions unsure of which way to go.

30' away you collectively spot the cause of the disturbance. Rising from the ground is a large worm-like creature. It is hard to make out much more than it rises about 10' from the surface and is focusing in on the mules and horses close to it. A shout of alarm 60' the other way lets you know there is at least one more horror coming up from under the sleeping guests

As Atlas is jolted awake he quickly becomes aware of his surroundings, having been in this situation too many times in his young life already. He quickly draws his sword and straps on his shield. While doing so he is looking around for the disturbance...There, what is that?.

Without further delay he yells to the group, "Form up, we're not going to kill this thing if we all take it on one at a time!" As Atlas yells he starts a steady pace towards the worm creature with a look of determination on his face. Noticing that some of the party are still behind and others are still charging in with no regard for themselves he tries again, "TO ME!!".

-----------------------------------------
Note: Atlas never really takes off his armor except when required for a specific task, so from here on out you can assume that he's in it unless he obviously isn't (taking a bath, enjoying the company of a woman, going to a court function that requires he take it off, etc).

ooc: Sorry for the delayed post! Thanks for waiting!
