Petty Crimes

DM Jon
Wednesday July 30th, 2014 11:08:24 AM

The evening winds down and everyone heads to bed with plans for a filling meal in the morning. The streets are quiet and peaceful in contrast to the events at that evening's meal. The night is warm, the walk to their beds uneventful and it proves to be a good night for rest and thought.

In the morning the sun is shinning and the town seems to be slightly busier than normal for that hour of the day. To those making the trek to the Leafwin-Pipewood home for breakfast they see that the handful of stores that are open for business with the sun have a few more customers than usual and the merchants themselves are moving with an excited pep to their steps. A couple of wagons have been pulled in front of the temple to Flower, one full and one empty, and a team of workers are busy are work carrying items out of the temple and placing them in the empty wagon before bringing another item in from the fuller wagon. As one might as expect from the follow of Ffloy they are handling the changing tenancy of the temple with great efficiency. The small contingent of Flower's clergy that had manned the temple stand near the wagon being loaded sharing a tray of honeycakes resting on the wagons seat. They look neither mistreated or displeased with their move and perhaps even a little excited.

"They're not wasting any time with the changeover" Alleah mutters to Bliss as she sees what's going on at the temple.

She doesn't have the same relationship with the Flower followers that others in the group have, so decides to see what the Ffloy people are up to. But first, Alleah reaches in to her belt pouch and takes out her wooden holy symbol - of Ffloy! Notch one up for being prepared.

She puts on a broad smile as she approaches the Ffloy group with a friendly wave "Hi guys! What're you up to? Need a hand?" At this point Alleah 'accidentally' drops her Ffloy holy symbol for all to see "Whoops. Don't want to lose this now". She picks it up and dusts it off, before placing it back in her kit.

Hazel looks for Alouryn, to ask her how she is, while giving the "intruders" (he won't all them any other way) the stink eye.

Bliss sticks close by Alleah, mostly because he is not sure what is going on. The priests over there are moving out, and the priests over there are moving in? Everybody seems okay with that.

Except Hazel! He walks over to his new comrade.

"Hazel, what's wrong? Is there something bad going on here? Why are you making a face? Did your mom ever tell you that if you make a face it might get stuck that way? My mom never said that, but my Aunt Priss did. I'm not sure I believe it."

Shel Breezelee Kromnite (Gerald) HP26/26; AC 14/14/11

Shel runs over looking for Alouryn. Assuming she finds her friend, she barrages her with questions. "Alouryn, so what's the story with this temple thing? Who decided this? Are you okay with it? If not, is there anything we could do? I want you to be happy. Speaking of which, you'd better talk to Hazel and get some details about the big day squared away. You'd better be thinking...what colors do you want? What kind of dress do you want me to wear? How about flowers? What's your favorite? I'm happy to help with any thoughts, of course!"

OOC: if Alouryn is not there, Shel will ask the wedding questions of Hazel, and leave out the temple questions.

"I think Lord Gargul should have a temple, or anyways a shrine or a chapel. Hazel, I'll help you make a chapel for your god if you help me make one for mine."

Bliss pauses in thought for a moment.

"Or we could make one shrine for gods to share? Is that a thing?"

Mookie rolls his eyes.

"I would be happy to help you build a shrine for Gargul. My good is the Culverwood, and as church we use the shadow of its trees, so we don't need a building to worship it. But first we need to fix this mess. I don't want Alouryn, my fiancee, to lose her temple."

Murphy to Fatine (Kim McCoy)
Thursday July 31st, 2014 5:48:45 AM

Murphy walks into the Temple of Flower - called that since it was built by Humble's Ford villagers following a visit to the village generations back. She blessed Humble's Ford, and the community has every since enjoyed good agriculture, and, in particular, an abundance of beautiful flowers. The temple teaching has encouraged deep love, familial commitment.

But he goes in to see what is going on inside. To witness what he fears is sacrilege... though he is trying, to a certain extent, to suspend judgment. The clerics of Flower outside seem fine, even cheerful.

"So, what's all this about?" he asks someone who seems to be directing others. He wants to ask other questions (such as: "Why are all of Flower's symbols and such being removed, and Ffloy's supplanting them? Did the high priestess of Flower out of Angel Springs approve this change?"), but let's that question suffice for starters.

Fatine
Thursday July 31st, 2014 11:13:33 AM

Fatine sits idly by, not really sure of anything the others are discussing. She perks up at the mention of a temple to Gargul. "Yes, I tink dat be a good idea. We need somewhere like dat to go and play!"

By chance or fate the Humbles Swords are all up and about this fine morning. Some were on their way to breakfast while perhaps others were getting supplies for the meal. In the end, they all congregated at the Temple.

The group working on loading and unloading the wagons do not appear to be clergy of one sort of another, but have the look of workmen about them. That rare breed of halflings that keep themselves relatively trim through physical labor. They smile at at Alleah's offer to help and her apparent clumsiness with the holy symbol, "Help if you'd like, but from the looks of it you should stick to the non-breakables, yeah?" one of the workers jest good naturedly.

Alouryn is currently absent among the followers of Flower, but those present greet the Swords with friendly saluations and the offer of honey cakes from the tray.

"Good morning, friends.
" a priestess says, "Isn't this exciting? The chance for growth of Humble's Ford. For others to come and see what we have to offer and experience the love of the community."

Another speaks up while the first stuffs her face with the pastries, "You should come visit us at our new shrine. Some of us are heading to Angle Springs, but a few we will be moving into one of the empty burrows. We are setting up a smaller temple that will be dedicated to all of the Gods. We want to ensure that any new comers to Humble's Ford feel welcome in our little town and have a place to worship"

The thrid pipes in, "Indeed! It will be just as the High Priestess divined. With Ffloys guidance the town will flourish in trade and coin. More will come and join our loving community."

Bliss (AC22, HP23) (Cayzle)
Thursday July 31st, 2014 12:42:32 PM

Bliss loves the idea of a shrine for all the gods. "That sounds great," he says. "I'm Bliss! Hi! I like Gargul, but the other gods are nice too. Maybe I was sent here to help you build your new shrine. Have you picked a place for it yet? Does your spot have monsters that need clearing out? That's kind of our specialty. Though we could also help carry things and stuff. I can be big too, you know!"

Bliss cancels his Reduce Person and casts Enlarge Person on himself. "Look how big I am now!" he laughs delightedly.

Mookie sniggers. "Calm down, Kid, you're scaring the locals."

"No I'm not!" says Bliss indignantly. "I'm not scaring anyone am I? Although I am pretty big!" he adds in his "big" voice.

Shel wasn't sure she enjoyed the change happening in her town, but who was she to stand in the way of progress? "You three are okay with moving from the temple, and building a new one in a vacant burrow? And the High Priestess thinks this is a good idea," she asks again, wanting to be sure they were okay with the move, before raising any voice in opposition. If they are okay, so much the better, I suppose, Shel thinks as she watches the progress.

Hazel doesn't like all the chirpiness of the priestess. Maybe there is magic involved.
"Please give me one of those cakes? Where is Alouryn?"
He stores the cake safely, without eating it.

Murphy gives a speech (Kim McCoy)
Friday August 1st, 2014 3:29:33 AM

Murphy observes the goings on, listens to what is being said. Someone or other has been greasing the skids here.

He enjoys Bliss's demonstration of how he can reduce or increase his size.

After a while of observation, the young halfling, with wavy light sandy hair, freckles, a small gap between his top teeth, wearing coveralls and, of all things, a backpack, decides it's time to address the issue.

With permission from the religious of Flower, he climbs up onto the wagon which contains their belongings and accoutrements of the temple. "Hazel, Shel, Bliss, friends, I'd like to get people's attention here for a minute." He finds a solid box on the cart he can stand next to. "Hey, if I ask a question, ending in 'not' - can you say, 'Yes!' loudly? he requests of his friends nearby.

Whistle Stop
He pulls out a whistle and gives it two short toots, a long shrill note, and two short toots. Addressing those bustling about, he calls out, "FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS, RELATIVES, HELPERS AND GAWKERS - LEND ME YOUR EARS FOR MOMENT!" He repeats the whistle cycle one more time, to help those last few conversations to subside, then steps up on the box he checked out a moment ago.
Murphy Speechifies
"People of Humble's Ford - this is a momentous day. This is a momentous day - Is it not?" He points to some of the well-brushed clerics, or brokers of Ffloy. "We welcome you to our own little town, you who have come to teach us the wisdom of Ffloy. We welcome you today." And, with an appeal to the crowd, adds, "Do we not? Do we not welcome them today!?" with palms open upward, lifting his hands in an encouraging motion, prompting them to say Yes!, or to offer some affirmation, and he claps his hands once in apparent glee and agreement.

Some Who Benefit
"We know that many wealthy people - I know of some out of Angel Springs, and a handful from Hovel - have spent time with the Brokers of Ffloy. Merchants, makers, bankers, and sellers, and traders, too.

"My own father attends Ffloy's Temple out there once in a while as he brings a load of toys and musical instruments to our shop, WinWood Toys & Music. By the way, mention my name, and they might give you a 5% 'Murphy' discount!"
he says with a wink and a smile, hoping to elicit a smile or laugh from some of the audience.

Success and a New Kind of Hope
"Those who garner the sound virtues of responsibility, diligence, fair dealing, sound planning - they have a better chance of success in life, of making a decent living for themselves and their families. Now, halflings of Humble's Ford - do we want a successful town? We want to prosper together - do we not? Do We NOT!?" By now, there should be a number of rousing cheers and smiling faces, Murphy hopes.

"The coming of the Brokers of Ffloy gives us a new kind of hope. On this momentous day, though, I ask us all to remember. Let us together remember our past here in this hopeful town, that we may carry on important things to the future. Can we do that together, for a moment? Can we not!?"

Let Us Recall A Visitor (Flower)
"As we consider bright possibilities - let us recall a visit. Before my grandfather's father was born, we had a visitor. A lovely visitor, who brought with her gifts which still are giving to Humble's Ford." As some of the clerics of Flower were on the wagon in which he stands he reaches down to one. "May I borrow your flower?" he whispers to her, as most of the temple clerics always wear a flower in their hair. He takes up the flower in his hand.

"Does anyone recall the name of that visitor?" he asks as he points to the flower in his left hand, raised up high. "If you need a hint - right, little boy," he says to a child who called out, 'Flower - it's a flower!' "Yes, a goddess visited this very place, she whom all call 'Flower.' And she brought flowers, and fertility, and fair harvests to our community for over a hundred years and more. One of my great-great grandfathers - I forget how many 'greats' - helped carve some of the wooden items used in the service of the temple. Looking out among us today - many of your ancestors helped to lay the foundation for this very building before which we stand. Lilly Blue Applecake - we know that some of your family were among the founders of this temple.

"This temple was built with love and care and devoted to the worship and teachings of Flower. And that love has kept families here strong, and children many."

I Admit I Was Upset
"I will allow when I first heard of the change I was upset. Mighty upset. Not upset that followers of Ffloy were coming, but upset that the Temple of Flower would be given to over to Ffloy, the clerics & worshippers of Flower displaced. But I see that I do not necessarily need to be as disconcerted as I first was. As it is reported that the High Priestess of Flower out of Angel Springs may have granted permission for the change of venue for the worshippers of the goddess of familial love, I must, we must, bow to her wisdom and insight. And I hear talk here of a new local place of worship for the Gods of the Wold. That would be good.

Yet I Charge You
"Yet I charge my friends here who have long held a devotion to Flower to keep that up. Love is, love can be, an everlasting thing. It is, it can be, the greatest of all.

Another Bit of History
"Something else we need to remember from our past. Years ago, we enjoyed rich trade with the Red Hills. Some of us recently visited the old Parley House, where peace and trade agreements were made. It has crumbled. Most of that trade is gone.

"We need to do something to restore the prosperity - do we not?"
He hears 'yes,' and 'yes, we do!' from some members of the crowd.[/b]

A Caution
"Now money, and goods, and services all are important things. Some say that there is a particular love which is out of balance, though. That particular love is the love of money - which, some say, is the root of all kinds of evil." He holds up his hands to forestall any objections or the start of any who may raise an objection to this quote in the present context.

"Money itself is not evil - it can be used for good, as well as for ill.

"So, as we work and learn of ways to increase goods and services among us - let us never forget that the love of family, and friends, and the love of goodness, and of those from whom goodness comes - is among the greatest of things. If we earn money, let it be to serve one another in love.

"Use money. Love people... Love people. Use money, but love people.

"Money has many uses. Brokers of Ffloy - I charge you, as you move into this temple devoted to love, to consider love and what is good for the people of this town as you help us to become more productive. For a measure of power may come with money, and power, if not tempered by love, can twist and destroy."
He pauses for that gloomy thought to sink in.

"Yet, if it IS tempered by love, it has the power to grow and create, that we might be sustained, and THRIVE!" and he thrusts his right hand, fingertips up, into the air. "Shall we not THRIVE!? Shall we not LOVE!? Let us love one another, and together build a thriving town!" He acknowledges the devotees on and around the cart. "Clerics of Flower - Bloom where you are replanted, and Let Love Grow!" He faces the scattered clerics of the new group. "Brokers of Ffloy - Help us to prosper, help us to Thrive! Hip hip, hooray! Hip hip, hooray! Hip hip, hooray!!!"
Murphy hands the flower back to the beautiful young devotee of Flower, claps his hands once, and jumps down off of the cart.

Bliss claps for Kendy's speech, but the "not"s in the questions seem confusing, so he shouts "YES!" in his big voice every time Kendry asks a question.

"Good speech, Mister Kendry!" he says at the end.

Hazel smiles at Murphy's instructions. He sure has a plan, and he is happy and willing to go along.
"YES!"
He screams with enthusiasm at the first "Do we not welcome them today!?"
Then his mind wonders... Welcome them???
"YES!"
He screams, maybe more warily, after the "We want to prosper together - do we not?".
What the HELL!?!? Where is the "Let's kick their greedy fat ass out of town"? That sounded like a "Welcome"!?!?
After Murphy says "Can we do that together, for a moment? Can we not!?" Hazel don't screams, but a questioning whine leave his lips.
"Yes?"
When the speech ends Hazel's face is completely red.
Where the hell is Alouryn?!? Why is Murphy welcoming those bastards?!?

Murphy's speech went entirely too long for Shel to pay attention to. She managed to get one 'yes' out before zoning out most of the words entirely. Everyone seems okay with the move...easy peasy.

By the midway point of the speech, Shel starts milling around, looking for Alouryn. She hadn't had much of a chance to speak with her friend in the last couple days, and wanted to find out all about what Alouryn felt about the weeding. There was so much to be decided!

"Thank you, Bliss!" he responds to the halfling of many sizes.

He then notes Hazel's face. Quietly, he whispers, "Patience, good friend. What say we find your bride?"

The druid re-approaches the cart with the clerics of Flower. "Say, uh, misses - would you know where Alouryn or Crystal might be? Why aren't they here?"

the Halfling' of the village within earshot of Murphy's speech gather aroundt listen and their positive responses to his questions seem genuine as hopefully. they weren't exactly a poor village, but they were somewhat stagnant. the prospect of new blood, new commerce and perhaps new food entices them.

After the speech the crowd disperses and further inquires into Alouyrn or Crystals location are made. one of the priestesses of Flower waves down the road. "Wonderful speech, Murphy. thank you. and Alouryn is down at the new temple getting it aired out and cleaned up."

OOC: Happy to skip ahead a few days

That afternoon Alleah spends some time getting to know the people of Humble's Ford with Bliss. If anyone is in need of aid, she will happily cast a cantrip or two to help out.

Later, she takes a walk around the town and picks two bunches of wildflowers and makes her way to the Mayor's house. She gives a quiet tap on the door and when answered, she presents the doorman with one of the bouquets, as well as a note to pass on to the Mayor:
"Dear Mr Mayor, Thankyou for inviting me into your lovely home last night. Your house, the company, and the food were all equally exquisite. Kind Regards, Alleah"

The other bunch of flowers she keeps for herself.

Following that she heads on over to the guard station, enquiring about the prisoners from the night before. They took quite a beating, and Alleah cannot in good conscience leave their wounds unattended. If allowed, she will use her healing powers to treat the bandits.

Could there be a more altruistic halfling in Humble's Ford? Or is she just endearing herself to the Mayor, and scoping out the layout and routines in the prison?

Murphy (Kim McCoy)
Sunday August 3rd, 2014 12:11:31 AM

Murphy takes the time to find out the name of the leader of the incoming Ffloy contingent, and some of the other key folks with the group. Once they hold their first service, Murphy will attend to hear what they have to say.

In the afternoon of the day of the speech, he gets together with Eldon and Cora Tosscobble. They had offered a burrow they have near the river, and he wants to find out if that offer still stands. If so, what can he and his friends do to reciprocate? He really likes the Tosscobbles, what they've given to the Ford, and their support of him and his friends. Also, if the offer does stand, he will ask to see it, and, if they grant leave, he will let the rest of the party know, and make arrangements to start moving some things in. He thinks that allowing Hazel and Alouryn to have the main bedroom would be appropriate, after the wedding, of course.

He also take time today and tomorrow to lend a hand to the followers of Flower in getting the new sanctuary set up, helping them settle in.

Murphy brings up to date his journal of what Humble's Sword has gone through since first getting together to join in the annual games a few months back, up through the confrontation with the thieves who threatened the lives of Alouryn and Crystal. He arranges with a sister and a brother to copy off what he has written, so he has three copies total. He offers to loan a couple of copies to his friends who traveled with him, so they can verify, correct, amend, and add their perspectives to the journal.

He will offer to Fatime, Alleah and Bliss a chance to read the journal, to catch them up on things they have gone through together. [So, if you say your character reads the journal, then your PC should be privy to what has been written on this board from the beginning.] He also makes available a copy of his brother Kendry's journal regarding an earlier adventuring group in Crescent Valley - most of which took place outside of Humble's Ford. [If you want your character to read this, it will take a longer time - perhaps a day or two of full-time reading - to get through - and recounts the CV game. You'll need to get the okay from the Campaign DMs cabal - just ask Cayzle or RobC about that - in order to gain access to read that game.]

He asks the three newcomers, witches all, if they have any of the greenmage in their backgrounds. "There is an orange ointment that we have the recipe for, but it takes the skills of a greenmage to make it, we are told. The ointment protects people from the irritating itch of goblin dogs. Should they attack our valley - and that is a possibility - it would be good for our militia, and us, to have some of the salve." Fatime - do you have greenmage skills?" He also asks for her own background - where she came from, how she learned what she knows. And is delighted to learn that she is a fellow druid - and speaks with her a bit in the tongue of druids. "Not often can I find someone to use our language with."

Of greatest importance, though, he works with Shel, Hazel, & Alouryn to figure out what to do for the wedding. "Have you thought about setting a date for the event? And where shall it be held? And who will officiate?"

The two ponies that belong to Samell Fingers Leafwin Pipewood - Murphy's father - which we thought had been lost, Murphy learned to his relief actually returned as the party was out in the Red Hills. After talking with his father, and with Bingo, his father got some people together to go and recover the cart, or whatever may remain of it - run well into tall brush along the southern end of the Old Traders Road.

Fatine thinks about Murphy's question, seeming a bit puzzled. "I don' know what dis greenmage ting be. See, I learn to be a witch all by myself, 'cause my mistress, Fat Witch, she din' like me doin' nothin' cept sweeping dee floor, so I taught myself all dee witchy powers while she sleep. Den she kick me out when she find out."

Fatine pauses. "Well, more like she try to kill me, but I whack her over dee head and run. Den a bit later I meet dee Old Man o' dee Forest. I don' remember his name, so dat's what I call him. He teach me a few tings, but he didn' like my witchiness, and when I say I won' stop it, he leave me wit' no more teachins." She sighs. "So, you see, I don' know much about dese tings, aside from what I teach myself and what little Old Man shows me, but maybe I can help you find dis greenmage ting? Maybe it be easy - how many green halflings are dere around here? I bet he stick out like a skunk what smell like flowers!"

He begins with the collection of 144 rumberry pies from Grandma Eglantine (who happens to live here in Humble's Ford) for delivery to Aunt Marigold in Hovel, in support of her candidacy for the position of Burgomeister of the valley; the two other candidates; the Beer Adventure in which Lomar the Friendly Ogre and Bobbles the goblin were befriended by the group; the election (in which Calfast Rowgold Tunnely won, thanks in no small part to the group's support); the prophecy of the three broom-riding witches; the strange nature-turning events; the Very Odd Birth & Fast Growth of Eberyon (or Ebryon, as they first heard his name) - who, as he was born as a satyr - or reborn, as it were, said it was appropriate that he, a fey creature in this incarnation, should also have been birthed by a fey creature - a halfling - son of Penelope Honeymead Pipewood Greentree, wife of Ellis Oakendale Greentree. Eberyon told this story of how the halfling race came to be:
"In the beginning, in the time of creation, the one known as the Jericko separated the sky from the lands. He was alone and felt lonely, so he created all forms of life to grow and florish. But he didn't create all at the same time. He wanted to admire his creations and the creator walked among them in the Wold.

The creator first saw the fey folk - satyrs, sprites, dryads and other dwellers in the woodlands. They exhibited a zest for life and a curiosity about things new. They were slight and elusive which kept them safe from danger. However they were not sensible and feared those larger than they. So the creator moved on.

Next the creator visited the elves. They were frail and oh so beautiful. But the tend to be haughty. They had freedom of spirit which the creator much admired, but they were slow to act and took to long to do anything. The creator again moved on.

The creator came to visit the dwarves. They kept homes beneath the earth. They were strong and hardy folk. Had great pride in family and lived by a strict moral code. However the creator quickly grew tired of their relentless and repetitive toil with the elements of the earth and moved on.

Next the creator found himself among the hordes of the orcs. They were dreadful and fierce warriors. They feared no one and filled their short lives with rage and combat. Their boldness was fascinating. The creator could not look upon their cruelty and brutality and soon left them.

With the humans the creator found much to admire. They were quick to learn and adapt to all types of environments. They multiplied quickly and occupied all the lands of Wold. However, they were prone to war with themselves. They had an obsessive need to feed their endless desire for riches and power.

After the creator finished his journey, he pondered about creating another race that had all the positive aspects of all his other races. A group he could be content with ... a race that pleased him completely. So the creator began his journey again and visited the fey in the forests. He seized a sprite and bound her with magic. The creator then revisited each race again and took from them a portion of what they were. From the elves he took agility and grace. He added it to the fey and it grew. From the dwarves he took devotion to family and added it to the sprite and she began to grow and change. Boldness and fearlessness he takes from the orcs and they fey grew even larger. The creator visited the humans once again and took from them the spark of creativity and the ability to adapt. After all these thing are collected, the creator adds them to the fey and the hobbit was born. A tall, strong, formidable creature that knew no fear. Who had bold ambitions and the creativity to do what they will.

The creator stood back and admired his craftsmanship. So very pleased he was. And great favor he bestowed on his beloved hobbits. The other races grew jealous and fearful of such a race and made war against them. The creator, in his ultimate wisdom, sought to halt the hostility by making his beloved hobbits smaller in size to lessen the threat they imposed on others. This made the hobbits more elusive to their enemies. It taught them to hide and use the shadows for cover. Gave them patience and cunning. Peace was soon restored and the creator was satisfied. After deciding that his work was complete, the Jericko stepped away from the Wold and rested."
Murphy's countenance then darkens as he explains the judgment and fury exhibited by Eberyon, in which he slew many druids in a fierce battle, yet was himself restrained and disarmed briefly by the young adventurers, "Among whom came one Dwight Twiggebundler, a witch, though he durst tell no one, and it were some time before members of his party came to know for certain that he was such - and a good hobbit, he, discerning, sometimes wise, though not one to make much of himself." In the aftermath of Eberyon's coming, many changes were see around the Wold, with flora and fauna showing great growth and vigor.

Yet a judgment on Eberyon was also taken by adventurers the Wold around. Each was given an acorn, and, based upon what they did, cast a vote to determine his fate: Live; Sleep; Die. When all was said and done, though, the vote was so split, with a slight plurality in favor of 'Live' - that it was deemed his judgment was to Reform. Live, but under repentence, for the benefit of the Wold.

He explains, too, that he has chosen to serve Eberyon. "It is said that he was even before The Jericko, and was creator of the Fey. At least, that is what Valdor reported." His sister Selithe and brother Kendry were not particularly pleased with his decision, as they themselves had fought against this Power in his re-born youth. "But I think they're getting over it. Maybe. I hope," Murphy adds.

Over the course of a few days, Murphy recounts many more - most, even, of the stories of the Crescent Valley campaign, for Bliss, as well as for any others who would care to listen (or to read a copy of Kendry's book). The location is: http://www.woldiangames.com//archives/index.html?game=crescent - but you will need to ask Cayzle for permission to access the archives for the purpose of reading.

Seeing Bliss change all to green for Fatine's benefit, Murphy laughs aloud. "Ah, now we have our greenmage, I'll warrant!"

Murphy thanks Fatine for her story.

Concerning the treasure, Murphy is fine with the group retaining the two potions of cure light wounds, and turning the rest over for the building of the new chapel.

"Witches are everywhere! And so are halflings!" exclaims Bliss.

"Yeah, who knew?" asks Mookie sarcastically.

"Yeah!" agrees Bliss, sincerely. "Those are great stories, Mister Murphy! Thanks!"

The sharpshooter/witch/monk, who had returned to tiny form a while ago, and who has been sitting on a lawn for the story-telling, gathers up several handfuls of grass that he has been idly picking while listening. He sneaks around, and then tries to approach Fatine from behind and unawares. [Stealth 32] He drops them on Fatine's head like confetti and shouts "Now you're green too, Fatine! Green Fatine!" And then he runs away laughing.

In the aftermath of the Temple transition the town slowly comes to life. The next days stores and merchants from Humble's Ford and beyond are receiving signets of Ffloy instructing them to restart trading. Soon trade convoys from Angel's Spring start to arriving making the town buzz with noises and life. The sleepy town is slowly awakening from its slumber.

The General Store, Slings and Arrows, Humble's Farm and even Smallholding Farrier owned by Primula Pipeleaf (Primula is a beautiful halfling gal, with long flowing red hair, and big green eyes. She does not look like a blacksmith at first sight, but is nevertheless one of the best in Crescent Valley. She's married to Hugo Pipeleaf who runs the Slings and Arrows shop. ) are all bustling with people. Benefitting from the nice weather they have placed shopping stands outside displaying their finest goods. Apart from these a few merchants that stop by also start displaying their items upon makeshift carts and wagons. There's just a fun atmosphere among the people and here and there you can even hear the hushed words that a lot has changed since Iangold Laughshield has taken over the Temple of Flower...

Days slowly pass giving you all some time to explore the town a bit more. Bliss and Alleah take the opportunity to visit the various shops... they can see deals being closed by the slap of a hand. Alleah makes sure to send a nice bouquet of Wildflowers to the Mayor's home. Later the two also check upon Zanven and Carsys. They are treated well. They are facing some time in captivity for apparently they were wanted in Angel's Spring. Zanven together with Carsys he ended up here by chance because they were wanted in Angel's Spring for robbery and took some small contracts at the Dancing Pig...

Murphy hopes tp learn somehing more about the Ffloy followers sonhe goes to check the Temple. What once used to be a place for meditation and prayer now looks much like a business convention with various parts of the temple containing booths with different stratagies and methods of succeeding in life. Speakers talk about positive thinking and the habits that create success of mind and body. Such practices ensure a solid financial future. There are no actual negociations going on inside the temple as that is considered holy ground. Outsideis a place for contract negotiations with Ingold Laughshield acting as judge and jury! The followers of Ffloy don't seem to hold actual religious services but instead value coin and contracts.

Later he goes to check on Eldon and Cora Tosscobble. Much to Murphy's pleasure Alouryn has already spoken with Cora about the wedding! Cora and Eldon, who are truely fond of the Humble's Sword have agreed to sponsor the wedding! Cora already has plans for the wedding!

The burrow near the river is still vacant and available for the Humble's Sword!

Murphy, Bliss, Alleah and Fatine discuss the orange ointment and the fact that it takes a greenmage to make the potion. Fatine knows little about thematter though...

Bliss is not the one to read books or journals... instead he butters up Murphy to walk around the town while the young druid tells stories. Bliss even asks about Kendry, Airin, Podo!

Hazel perhaps had hoped to earn enough to pay for his own wedding but is happy none the less with Cora's offer to help with a lovely wedding!

At a certain moment the group finds eachother wandering the streets of the little town. They overhear Murphy telling the tale of Ebryon, the creation of the Wold and so on...

But it is Bliss who breaks thestory with a prank! Turning all green Fatine says to Murphy they have found the greenmage!! LOL

---------------------------------

Suddenly you can hear a merchant shouting... frol around the corner a young lad comes running with an apple in his mouth! Smiling and laughing...

Behind him a rather corpulent fruit merchant tries to cath the young thief...

Then young lad is running 40 ft from you

Murphy Hi, Grandma Eglantine! (Kim McCoy)
Tuesday August 5th, 2014 6:59:16 PM

Noting that he has not visited with Grandma Eglantine much of late, Murphy decides to remedy the deficit in familial duty. He invites any of his friends who care to join in to come along. He goes to her hovel, bringing a small tin of tea and a jar of honey he picks up for her. He tells her some of what has been going on lately, and the adventures he & his friends have shared - and lets her know that now a few more people know of her famous rumberry pies, as he told them of the time she baked twelve dozen to help out his Aunt Marigold. If any of his friends join him, he makes suitable introductions - though she likely knows Shel & Hazel already.

======

As a reminder, Murphy sought out the names of some of the main clerics of Ffloy - their leader, his or her title, and several other Brokers of Ffloy & their associates. If that info could be passed on, I should appreciate it!

Shel wasn't sure she liked the temple being turned into a marketplace, but she had to admit there was a palpable buzz about town, which was nice. She went to the new market stalls and took a peek at the items for sale. As always, she liked to look for any items having to do with the Wardd moon, or any pretty sashes. Even after donating her share of gold to the temples, she still had more gold in her pocket than ever in her life, so she wouldn't have been bummed about spending a bit of it.

Alleah cracks a smile as she spies the young lad running with an apple. It reminds her of days not so long ago in Dirt City. By all accounts it would look like the boy has stolen someone's fruit. She gives Bliss a nudge with her elbow and points in the direction of the commotion.

She looks closely at both the boy and the chasing shopkeeper (Perception: 22).

Alleah is inclined to let the young scamp get away with it. She could help him, but how would he learn? Instead she keeps a close watch on the shopkeeper. Does he seem like he would just give the boy a clip over the ear if caught, or would he do something more serious? (Sense Motive: 19)

Bliss steps behind a friend or a stall or something and casts Disguise Self to make himself look like the boy. Ley Line check 72 = OK. Disguise check is at +13. Then Bliss dashes out just as the boy runs past -- maybe getting caught in Murphy's downpour!?

The Humble's Sword are caught with dilemma's as soon as they spot the young rascal chased by the fruit merchant.. Alleah cracks a smile remebering her days not long ago in Dirt City. She's inclined to let the youngster get away with it especially when she realizes the shopkeeper wouldn't do anything serious to him...

Murphy though thinks the boy would never learn if he could get away... as the lad comes close to Murphy a pillar of cold water suddenly drenches the apple-stealer!! The heavy load of water makes his slip and fall prone on the ground! The apple bouncing away from him...

Bliss, having taken cover to disguise as the youngster, quickly comes to the boy's rescue!

,"Leave the boy alone Bumblebee!!" Hazel shouts...

The young lad scrambles out of sight leaving Bliss alone in the pool of water!
The merchant comes huffing and puffing. "I ff.... ff... finaly! I... got you"

Shel was distracted by all the shiny things and completely missed the young thief and the takedown that occurred. She only noticed a ruckus when she tried to pay for a coral blue colored bracelet, and the merchant was turned away from her, watching one of his stall neighbors chasing after a child. "What's going on over there anyway," she mutters as she places the bracelet back on its holder and she quickly walks toward the scene.

Alleah's smile continues, but she doesn't say anything just yet. Did the boy look thin or malnourished? What condition were his clothes in? She looks in the direction the boy went and tries to see where his wet footprints may lead (Perception: 29). She is trying to determine whether he was stealing for 'fun' or for necessity.

Finally she says something loud enough for the group - and the merchant - to hear. "Ah, youth. Reminds me of the days back in Dirt City. One of us would steal something small from a vendor, he'd give chase, and then the rest of the pack would help ourselves to his unguarded stall"

She's hoping this subtle nudge might get the vendor back to his stall quickly, without needing any kind of altercation.

He responds to his friend, Hazel. "So, we should treat all thieves equally, then?"

Looking at the apprehended twin, and figuring that there is something peculiar going on here in addition to a simple theft... Murphy decides the matter is not as grave as is the mindset of his friend.

Murphy with Hazel (Kim McCoy)
Thursday August 7th, 2014 4:56:45 PM

The towhead halfling leaves his other companions and the commotion of the street to go sit with his friend in the shade of a tree. He plucks a few blades of grass. "Our quiet village is growing less quiet, friend." Murphy begins weaving the grass together. "I am not at all pleased that Ffloy's business followers have taken over Flower's temple. Tradition and practice and consecration may argue in favor of Flower's followers retaining the building. Yet when the high priestess of the faith in the valley agrees to the change we see, and most of the priestesses, acolytes and devotees seem happy to go along, and no one else in the community raises objection, and the Mayor insists upon it... well, there are times, I think, that one picks the time and occasion to fight, or chooses to wait and let time do its work.

"In my talk to the people in front of the temple, I reminded people of Flower's teachings and our heritage. I challenged the followers of Ffloy to remember love - and to avoid the love of money. They may use money, but let them love people.

"I am helping out some in the building of the new temple.

"Meanwhile, in my mind, the followers of Ffloy are under observation. If they do well, and are overall helpful to our community, then I shall not oppose them. But, Hazel, if I see them doing or encouraging evil within or outside the temple, then I shall oppose.

"As are you, I am sad the way this was handled. Easily could they have come in and set up their own house of worsh... of business. I am disappointed in the Mayor - and the high priestess of Flower. But they have authority.

"Besides, Hazel, tell me this: Is a building essential to faith? Do Flower's teachings, or those of any other, fail due to a change in venue?

"Do you want to win? You are marrying a cleric of Flower. Be one with her, and support her in her faith. Make it your own, if you choose. If you acknowledge and also want to serve or give honor to others of the powers above, do that, as well.

"But do not choose bitterness. That will poison your heart, Hazel. Love your wife, and come to her with a warm and tender heart - a heart that is willing to forbear and forgive. Don't hate the followers of Ffloy. If you want Flower's message to spread, then live that message. And teach it to your own children.

"Now, you know I am not one to shrink from conflict. You also know that I encourage peace where people will take it - even with giants. I would rather make a friend than to defeat an enemy. But I would rather defeat an enemy than to see them bring harm to those whom I love.

"Moving from one place to another is not harm, Hazel. It may be inconvenient, but it may also be an opportunity. My Uncle Orby once said to me, 'Murphy Bumblebee, when you run into troubles - do not resent them as intruders. Welcome them as friends - because they can teach you to be steadfast. Let that steadfastness have its full effect, that you may become perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. And ask Heaven for help, and you will get it. Maybe not in the way you expect, but you ask, and you will get. Now get me that block of wood.'"

The druid smiles. "I had stubbed my toe on that block of wood and was yelling and complaining when he found me. He took it, and carved me a toy which gave me pleasure for years."

As he spoke, he had continued to gather grass and weave it. By this time he had made a tiny basket, and was working on a handle.

"So, what's happening to me? I'm loving my friends, and making new ones. I'm helping and defending them where I can. But I'm not letting myself get riled when getting riled doesn't help.

"What's happening to Humble's Ford? It's a place where folks live - lots of 'em pretty good, some of 'em not so much. We're getting on, figuring things out, trying new things. Let's do what we can to shape 'em in what looks to us to be the right direction."

He stretches. "Also, I'm trying to help my best buddy get married, without anybody falling apart first! All right - it's your turn. Tell me what is on your mind, Hazel."

As he listens to the ranger, Murphy picks a handful of clover, and places it in the basket. He hands it over and says, "This is for you to give to Alouryn."

Shel's been a little distracted with all the shiny things that are to be found in the different shopping stands. Whe she sees a merchant chasing after a child she wonders what is going on and quickly walks towards the scene... only to see the little rascal sitting in a big puddle of water and mud. ... the merchant breathing heavy from the chase and most of her friends standing around the scene... Funny though... dispite the fact that the kid is standing in a puddle of water his clothes are wet at all?!? How could that be??

Obviously her friends don't all agree with how to handle the situation... some want to smile and send the boy on his way. Others consider a thief like any other thief and such someone diserves to be reprimanded...

Alleah checks on the boy. He's neither malnourished nor does his clothing looks dirty or ragged... Apparently he was more or less stealing just because he was craving an apple.

Fatine laughs heartily when the water drenches the kid and is entertained by the whole sitution but doesn't move to intervene.

The kid, Bliss in disguise, then starts talking to the merchant... he hands back the stolen apple along with 5 gold!!??

"WHERE DID YOU STEAL THAT GOLD YOU LITTLE RAT!! COME HERE SO I TAKE YA TO Y'RE PARENTS!! WHAT'S Y'RE NAME?? " The merchant is seriously agitated. He won't hurt the kid but first having an apple stolen and then bluntly given it back with 5 Gold is too much for this man to handle...

Hazel and Murphy no longer interfere as they start bickering amongst each other about what is to be considered stealing or bad... Aren't all thieves equal? Should you make an exception for a child pulling a prank?? Both good friends take some time to discuss the current tidings in the Valley. What's wrong with this place and what's wrong with you...

Taking cover behind Alleah and Fatine the real kid (soaking wet of course) eyeballs himself as his body double gives back the tasty apple with some extra gold...

"How... how... what?!?... who... " he stammers not too loud...

(Be aware that 5 Gp actually already is a lot for a kid to have in its pockets friends... it's quite logical that our dear merchant considers this stolen gold!!)

Alleah's first instinct is to cast a spell to help disguise the youngster. But if he is going to steal things he needs to be able to take care of himself. That, and she doesn't want to be arrested as an accomplice of an apple thief. That would just be embarrassing! No, if she was going to be arrested for stealing it would be for much more than an apple.

But I still don't like for them to lose their temple, and those thieves grabbing it. I'll keep watching them, that is for sure. But you are right, I have a weeding to think of. "No, I agree with you, Hazel, I do not like it, either. But let's suspend judgment for the time being," Murphy responds to his friend's first comments.

Then, as Hazel asks about accepting gifts, he answers, "Well, my folks taught me to give, but never to be too proud to receive. 'If you won't receive, aren't you saying you are better than the giver? Be humble, be grateful. But you, also, be a giver, when it is your turn.'"

He smiles, and says, "With us halflings being the way we are, you should have plenty of 'turns' as others marry in our little town."

He stands up. "Let's get back to the others, and see how things have turned out." So long as Hazel is agreed, he returns the few hundred yards to the scene of the petty theft... likely by the time they get there resolved in one way or another.

DM Steven: "Ta da!!"

"Mind y're own buiness! the merchant sneers to Shel...

As Alleah does not want to be linked to criminals she observes virtually anything... anything but Bliss and the merchant...

Bliss then startles the merchant by lowering his disguise. THe merchant jumps back a few paces and then narrows his eyes to get a closer look at Bliss...

"Who are you lad??"

"You'll never make money in this town, being greedy and mean! You're not one of those Ffloy folk who charge to help people are you? Your whole group is making me mad about this whole deal.". Shel turns to the boy, and demands he come with her. Then he turns into Bliss. Or Bliss turned into himself. Or something. With a sigh and a shake of her head, Shel turns and walks back to the merchant stalls, not even wanting to try and figure out what was happening with the group.

"Shel's words might inflame the merchant further. I think I've seen just about enough now" Alleah resolves, and steps forward to place herself between Bliss and the merchant.

"Excuse me sir? Sir? Hi! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Alleah and I am a cleric of Warrd, the master of luck." the young halfling girl takes her holy coin from her pocket to show the man "I can see this situation is as confusing for you as it is for me, but perhaps I can help. It seems you have both your apple back, as well as several gold pieces for your trouble. Rather than cause a scene, which may cost you business - my, what would Ffloy think! - perhaps you and I can shake hands in good faith and return to our daily lives?"

Alleah beams a smile at the man and extends her hand straight out to him.

"Good luck is supposed to come to you from it"

If the man shakes Alleah's hand, she will use her 'Touch of Luck' ability

------------------------------------
"Touch of Luck: You can touch a willing creature as a standard action, giving it a bit of luck. For the next round, any time the target rolls a d20, he may roll twice and take the more favorable result."
Could be useful for someone making a Profession check :)

Also from the writeup on Warrds clerics: "They are also welcomed in most places as harbingers of good fortune. They are thought to bring luck with them, and so folks often offer them good meals and beds in order to bring luck under their roofs."

The apple thief looks at Shel when the demand is made to accompany her.. but then she looks away. Still not all that sure about what is going on, but seeing a chance to escape a smacked bottom the child darts off between two stalls and unless followed disappears into the village.

The merchant glares about, but lets out a huff and pockets the coins. He glares about a moment, still flustered, but at Alleah's offered hand he lets out a sigh and gives it a shake, "I'm may be a merchant, but I'm no more of a follower of Ffloy than any other, but if they be making my life easier good for them and me." he points an accusatory figure at Bliss, "And you get your jollys else where. don't be botherin' us working folks with your adventurin' antics. Some of us work for a living." With that he turns around and heads back towards his stall.

Mungo Thistleleaf is a well-known supplier of pipes and pipe weed to Humble's Ford and his special variety of pipe weed has gained some renowned through Crescent Valley. How he raises and prepares his special stock is a closely guarded secret that has been kept within the Thistleleaf family for several generations.

When the Humble's Swords enter he shop he spins and waves his arms. "They took it! All of it!" He gestures towards an empty display case that has had its locked removed. "This years crop of Thistleleaf Pipe Leaf.. all gone save a few crumbles pieces!" He moves up to Shel and grabs onto her shoulders. "Do you know how long it takes to prepare? The care and time taken to grow and treat and dry?!" He throws his hands in the air and turns back to his empty case. "Days..weeks, months!"

He spins back and waves another hand towards a lock box along the back counter that also stands open and empty before adding, almost as an afterthought. "And they took my gold too! Everything from that last week was in there!"

Mungo seems genuinely distraught.

She then examines the display case. Is the lock, or any remains of it present? If so, she takes those as well.

Are there any scratch marks on the case that may indicate if the lock was forcefully removed? Or do the lack of marks suggest it was delicately opened with a key or pick?

Alleah isn't ready to think of this is a robbery just yet. She keeps a keen eye and ear on Mungo. Perhaps he just had a poor season and was too embarrassed to tell everyone? This could well have been an inside job. (Sense Motive: 21)

There is no sign of forced entry into the store or into either the display case or the lock box that had held the merchant's earnings. The locks on the two latter containers look to have been careful unlocked either by a key or a pick wielded by nimble, skilled fingers.

Inside the display case that once held Mungo's special stock are perhaps enough pieces that could be scrapped together to fill the bowl of a typical pipe. The case itself spells strong of the particular pipeweed that is known to have a peculiar scent unmatched amongst the other varieties available in Humble's Ford.

For his part if this was some sort of inside job Mungo does not seem to have been apart of it. His distress looks to be real and heartfelt.

A few minutes after the Humble's Swords enter and start to look about the store Iangold Laughshield pushes his way through the gawkers outside to enter the store, "My good Master Thistleleaf," he says with a sweep of his hands, "I heard there was some sort of ruckus in your store. Is there anything I can assist with?" The priest of Ffloy gives the Humble's Swords a brief, curious look, before moving closer to the merchant to have the man repeat his story to him.

Alleah collects the scraps of pipeweed for, er, evidence. The smell is certainly unusual. Even as a non-smoker Alleah can tell the difference between this and common tobacco. She'll have to remember to wash her hands later to scrub the smell from them. A prestidigitation spell here to do so may not be well received by the merchant.

The lock was no doubt expertly picked. OR someone had the key.

"Yes, an inside job is a distinct possibility. Even if Mungo here is innocent, one of his staffers may be the culprit. Hmm... no trail. Likely loaded into a sack, or some other container. Not even the slightest hint of scrap on the floor though. Whatever the container not even the finest particles of the tobacco slipped through it. Interesting."

Her attention is broken by the appearance of the priest.

"Mr Laughshield" Alleah smiles and goes to give a small curtsey. It is at this point she remembers that she changed out of her dress clothes and back into her adventuring gear - meaning she is now wearing breeches. Already committed to the move, she curtseys anyway just pretending she is holding the edges of a skirt.

Trying to stifle any embarrassment, she continues "How are you this morning? Have you heard how Ms BadApple may be faring since the excitement at the Mayor's house?"

For some reason Alleah sees Laughshield as a kind of senior or authority figure, and must be on her best behaviour in front of him.

Iangold chats with Mungo for a few moments in calm tones, placing a hand on the other man's shoulder and manages to calm the merchant down. Hazel gets something of a quick look of disapproval, but then he turns to address the rest of the Humble's Sword. "My friends, I am glad to see that you too have endeavored to help Master Thistleleaf with his situation. I will inform the city guard about what happened and I am sure they will welcome your assistance in looking into the matter. Another set of eyes can catch what the first set might miss. It is as true with the print of contracts as with senses of criminality, I am sure."

To Alleah he smiles and nods his head, "And Ms. BadApple is doing quite well. She has recovered from the evenings excitement quite well by all accounts."

He looks back toward Mungo and gives the merchant another pat on the shoulder, "I will go speak to the guards, Master Thistleleaf. I assure you everything that can be done to find the perpetrator will be done. It is a travesty that your special pipeweed is not available to the public! I know I for one was looking forward to trying a pinch in my pipe and I'm sure many in the coming caravans will be looking forward to it as well!" And with that bit of reassurance (unless otherwise held up), the priest moves out of the store.

From all appearances, the priest of Ffloy seemed to be exactly what it looked like. A new senior member of the community coming to check on a member of his new flock.

Once Iangold leaves Mungo looks towards Shel, "A list of key holders? Why... you think one of my people ddi this?" he starts to huff, but then lets out a sigh, "Oh.. I suppose it's possible, but I doubt it. It's just my son and cousins in the store, but I'll get you the list." He writes down a few names and hands it over. It is as he said, just a handful of Thistleleafs.

As you know, I myself was rather shocked at the notion of Ffloy's followers taking over the temple from worshipers of Flower. Yet, as I mentioned to those gathered at the temple, so long as love of people is not supplanted by love of money, all things considered, may things go well for you. Thank you for coming to help out Master Thistleleaf. Let's see what we can come up with." He thinks to add, "Say, just what day or days are the caravans expected to arrive here? Might someone head out to meet them, then perhaps travel with them back to here - and keep their eyes and noses out for this special tobacco?"

Though tempted by the thought, Murphy refrains from asking for candied bacon.

"Shel - great idea. Let me tag along, too." Just before leaving the store, he mentions, "Oh, Master Thistleleaf, if I get a chance, I will ask my uncle Orby to keep his eyes and ears out. There are no hidden tunnels or entrances to the shop. There is a front and back door, both made of sturdy wood with decent locks. A few of the windows open, but most are forever closed. There is a small basement used for storage, but aside from a set of stairs in the back there is no other entrance to it.

Before the Humble's Sword depart Mungo will share out a few pieces of his candied bacon in thanks for their assistance.

To the offer of a loan of tabac he shakes his head, "No.. no need. I have tabac of the regular sort stored away for my less discriminating customers. Not everyone can afford my special crop after all."

After the inspection of the interior is complete the adventurers head out to track down the names on the list?

Bliss decides it is time for a game! "Hey! Mister Murphy! Why don't you pretend you are a doggie or a wolf maybe, and I'll be your owner. And you smell that stuff that's has its special smell, and we all look around town for people who have that same smell? Like a scavenger race."

Mookie starts to berate Bliss. "Jeezum Crow, Kid! Stop playing a--"

Then the crow shuts up and looks thoughtful.

Shel had only seen Murphy turn into an owl. "Good point...Murphy, can you turn into other animals as well? Some of them are pretty good trackers. If you can, let's try that before we head off and bother Mungo's family members. Let's get out of here, anyway, tobacco smell makes me a bit nauseous...no offense meant, of course, Mungo!"

Before going out Hazel asks Mungo or his friends for a little bit of his tobacco.
"A small sample, please."
He go outside with the party, and shares his plan.
"Maybe Faoil, my dog, can track where to stolen tobacco is!"
He goes to Faoil, bring him to the outside of the store, and presents the tobacco to him.
"Track, boy! Take us to the criminals!"
Faoil has the "track" trick, he is able to scent, and has a +6 in Survival (Track by scent). Hope he gets bonuses.
Hazel will make a roll to aid him.
The typical DC for a fresh trail is 10 (no matter what kind of surface holds the scent). This DC increases or decreases depending on how strong the quarry's odor is, the number of creatures, and the age of the trail. For each hour that the trail is cold, the DC increases by 2. The ability otherwise follows the rules for the Survival skill. Creatures tracking by scent ignore the effects of surface conditions and poor visibility.

"That is an intriguing thought, Bliss. I may want to find a place where I would not create scandal by such a change..."

"Yes, Shel, I think so. I think I can only do it perhaps once a day, for maybe a few hours. I learned about it in training, and how to prepare for it. Changing into an owl was my first time - it surprised me! And flying is... flying is glorious!" He appears to enter into a reverie for about fifteen seconds, blinks, then resumes talking. "Maybe I can change into a dog. I could do a wolf, but that might frighten people."

Then he sees that Hazel w/ Faoil already can do what he was about to attempt. His thought had been to transform into a Caran Hills dog [See Bernese mountain dog], as there have been several of that breed in his family - including one that sleeps in his father's shop since a break-in a few years ago.

"Looks like Faoil beat me to it, Bliss. Perhaps I'll try a change a little later." He does take a moment to get a good whiff of the special tobacco, though, then joins in with his friends.

"Uh, wait - Shel was going to go to talk with Thistleleaf family members. I suspect Faoil will go wherever his nose leads him. Should we split up to follow both leads in smaller groups, or stick together for a bit? I vote for following Faoil's lead for a bit, see if he can follow the scent. Find out what we find out that way, then head off to talk with the other workers. If we do split up, though, I'll go with Shel."

The old constable and the Humble's Sword make their way through the streets towards the sound of the yelling. When they round the corner to the square where Mungo's shop was they see a cluster of halfling's all knotting together is a mess of pushing, shoving and swinging limbs.

Those involved in the scuffle yell and shout at each other with various calls of "Lay off!", "Hold 'em!", and "Thief!" ringing out. Above the din the voice of Mungo Thistleleaf can be heard, "You wretched little thief! I can smell it on you! I never sold you any!" Visible in the middle of the group the old merchant is wrestling with a much younger halfling that is currently sporting a bloody nose. There are ten or so halfling's visible in the bunch, with equal numbers on each side it seems with one trying to apprehend the accused thief and the rest trying to pull their friend away.

Garret eyes the situation a moment and licks his lips. He gives a glance towards the Swords, "You all see if you can't pull this apart. I'm going to go pull in some of the guardsmen." And then he heads off as a jiggly run to get backup.

He discovered his supply missing this morning from his shop. From what you say, it was likely taken shortly after he closed down for the night. One moment, let me get something out - might try a sketch, here, though I'm not the best artist."

If Arrid Brasspipe can provide a description of the 'bloke' - Murphy looks to be able to sketch with pen and ink on parchment a fair resemblance to him [profession: art: 19]. He asks if that looks like him, or mostly like him - and he will make any corrections or changes the fellow suggests, making corrected sketches as directed.

Murphy adds today's date, and his initials: MBLP.

Accompanied by Arrid, if the fellow will be so kind, he shows the sketch to members of his party, then to Master Mungo Thistleleaf as well as Constable Garret Ostgood.

OOC: That's how Bliss casts the spell, anyway!

Mookie coughs. "Kid, she's already a sorcerer, like your mom was. Why would she waste time learning to be a witch? All she has to do is read a scroll or learn the spell herself. But sorcerers got limited room in their head for spells, so why should she learn it herself when we got three witches in the party to cast it? She should take a useful spell like False Life or something witches can't cast! Your mom liked Acid Arrow, Resist Energy, Rope Trick, and See Invisible. She didn't like spells that forced saves because her magic wasn't very hard to resist. Scorching Ray is nice and all, but Acid Arrow goes farther and cuts right through spell resistance, which is nice against your tougher enemies."

Bliss says, "Mookie, you sure know a lot about magic." He has forgotten to whisper at this point.

"Sure Kid," he replies. "Years with the Blackbird Lake crew taught me more than enough for one lifetime."

None of that brawlers were armed aside for the occasional utilitarian knife at the waist, but none were drawn. They're Halflings, not dwarves.

Garrett moves off with Mungo to get his side of the story while Arrid starts to give a description of the man to Murphy... But then the idea of mind reading and disguise comes up and he is amiable to that as well. The Detect Thoughts spell can only give the surface thoughts of the target, but with him concentrating Alleah can get some of the basic details of an average looking Halfling male with light hair. " I'm a little fuzzy on the details.. Had a bit to drink and the bloke was wearing his hood up over his face. Said he was cold "

the disguise Alleah assumes is not recognizable to anyone else present, Mungo and Garret included.

when Arrid is told about the robbery he kicks his feet, "aw, shucks. So that's what this all was about. Here, Mungo, let me pay you a fair price for what I bought." And he hands over a few of the coins Murphy had discretely passed him.

"thank you.. Sorry about muckling on to you, lad. been a hard day. " Mungo says as he accepts the coins.. And unless their is further question Garrett will see to escorting Arrid and Mungo home.

"That dirty halfling in the hood again! He's a problem, and we need to figure a way to find him. He hired those thieves from earlier, and now he's starting fights between townsfolk. How in the world do we get to him, though," the tiny halfling wonders out loud. She grabs Arrid's face, holding it tightly like Bliss told her to do, as she contorts her face and sticks her tongue out. Surprisingly, she didn't learn anything new from the effort. "Doesn't work for me, Bliss..."

"The disguise will last for 30 minutes. Might as well get some use out of it. Should we head to the Dancing Pig just in case?"

Alleah has three cloaks in her belongings - her Cloak of Resistance (which does look quite fancy), her grey Cold Weather cloak, and her green Explorer's cloak. She will don whichever one best matches the one she saw in Arrid's mind.

Failing that, she will look over the sleeping halflings to see if any of them have a cloak that matches that she could 'borrow'.

the Dancing Pig isn't al that busy as this time of day, but a few seats are taken by regulars stopped by for a bit of mutton pie from the kitchen and the tender is behind the bar. The disguised Alleah gets something of a vague look of recognition from the bartender of the sort he's likely to give any recent patron, but other than that there is no response.

No one goes fleeing from the scene via the windows or back door. It's just business as usual... Though there is a bulletin board up by the door that is covered on new notes and posters.

Iangold looks towards Murphy with a shrug, "The Constable? I am afraid I am not privy to such mutters of town governance. The post was filled by the same gentlemen when I arrived as it is today."

He then looks towards the rest of the Humble's Swords with a smile, "The temple of Ffloy would like to hire the Humble's Swords to provide for the same journey and arrival of the first large caravan of goods coming from Angel Springs. I have received word that several merchants have left Angel Springs heading to Humble's Ford, but they did so without an armed escort. While I do not imagine they will encounter any difficulty, we, the congregation of Ffloy as well as the citiens of Humble's Ford have much riding on the safe arrival of these merchants as a precursor to the many more to follow."

He leans against a table as he watches over the group, "Given the importance of this convoy arriving in a safe and timely manner I am willing to hire you at great expense to the temple. We would be willing to pay each of you 400 pieces of gold now and another 400 upon the safe arrival of the caravan... you would, of course, need to leave tomorrow morning at the latest, so please make your decisions quickly"

Provide us what additional information you can, and we'll be ready early on the morrow." He gives a little cough. "It's Humble's Sword. One sword - though made up of more than one of us."

Murphy does not share Fatine's predilection for ghosts, and is not a big enthusiast for goblins. But he would like to see how she would go about zapping such.

"Hazel, it might be good to get on the road again for a few days. All you've been is either agitated or lovestruck since we returned. Go see your financee, talk things over with her. You're right, there are some local things happening which merit investigation. But you're a ranger, friend. Let's range some, what say?" he nudges him with his elbow. Those who use missile weapons make sure that Hazel does not run out of sling bullets," he says, teasing his friend, who often runs short of ammunition. "But let's pick up what gear & supplies we deem useful for guarding a caravan. Shall we meet at the 5th hour after noon to see how things are going with each other, and figure out plans?"

Before leaving the Dancing Pig, he approaches the barkeep. "Say, we've been out of town a bit. Do you know who might have an idea why Rosco Hornblower was replaced as head of the guard by Garret Ostgood?" He takes a few gold pieces in hand as he asks the question, and will proffer one to three depending upon the quality of the information given. Bliss is not able to determine the exact nature of any of iangolds magical belongings, though the cloak gives a moderate transmutation aura, the ring a moderate adjuration and the rest faint abjuration.

the cleric smiles to the wee Bliss and shakes his head. "no, I am afraid not. while I commend your attempt at negotiation I am afraid the risk of damage or loss of my cloak outweighs the saved gold."

he turns to regard the others, "I am afraid I have not seen the official manifest for what is coming, but I know spices, cloth and clothes of the latest fashions, unique cheeses and some livestock are among it.". He lets out a small sigh, "and yes, I agree it was foolish to send the caravan on without an escort. my brethren in Angel Springs were perhaps too eager for these goods to arrive as allowed their eagerness to overcome their caution. I assure you the high priest will speak to them about it. as for the pay I am offering.. It likely totals more than the total value of the caravan itself, goods, wagons and oxen included, but you have to understand the mere material value of this caravan is secondary to what it symbolically means to this town. this is the start of a new era of growth and prosperity for Humble's Ford and the temple of Ffloy wishes to ensure it. it will take perhaps a week for the slow moving wagons to reach us, but if you ride your ponies hard tomorrow morning I imagine you could meet them by dinner time the day after. "

after the majority of the party agrees Iangold reaches into the bag at his side to pull out several scroll tubes and set them on the table. each one is opened and a thick stack of rolled paper is pulled from them to be set in front of a Humble's Sword member followed by an inkwell and pen. "Now there is just the matter of making it official. please sign and initial the documents as shown..." there are easily several dozen spots to sign or initial in the stack of legalese documents that the clergy of Ffloy treat as their gospels.

to Murphy the bartender shrugs. "rosco? from what I heard he had family that needed help in Hovel so he moved out that way. he never was right in the head."

"Thank you, I was wondering where he went." Murphy slides two gold to the barkeep.

Not certain about the relative literacy of all gathered here, Murphy says, "No one sign or initial a thing until we understand what this document says. One of my relatives is a lawyer, and he says a fool signs a document without reading it. Let none of us be fools. How about I read it aloud, and if anyone has a question, we get an answer? If something needs changing before we sign, let that be done first. If all looks good and reasonable, then we can go ahead. Sound good?"

He realizes that Shel's attention is likely to wander following the first 'whereas' or 'therefore,' and Fatine is unlikely to be attuned to legalese or the language of bureaucrats. But he plows ahead for a couple of paragraphs. Looking at the stack of documents, he figures he'll waste an hour or two going through the whole thing.

"If anyone doesn't want to stick around, go ahead and get ready, and I'll finish going over this." He wants to ensure that the agreement does not bind the party beyond the carrying out of this particular assignment, nor that the actions of one member of the group will unnecessarily result in inordinate negative consequences for the remainder of the group.

"Iangold Laughshield, is your title in your church 'Broker' - or would it be another? Also, would the members of your fellowship call you 'Broker Iangold' or 'Broker Laughshield' or something else? I want to ensure I understand proper designations, and give due respect." Murphy strokes his chin. "Might you and I meet in a few hours to go over the texts, clarify what needs clarification or amendment, then when our group gathers late this afternoon we can take care of the signing?"

Apparently Wardd either wants Alleah to do this task, not to offend Mr Laughshield, or just to test herself. Whatever his reasoning, he hasn't steered her (too) wrong in the past. Besides, if she was signing her life away it wouldn't be the first time she had broken a deal.

Alleah picks up the quill with a momentary look of concern. "Blast. What name was I using in this town again? Dirtfist? Underbarrow? No, Highhill. That's right"

She begins the tedious task of signing her name "Alleah Highhill" on all the sections Mr Laughshield indicates.

Alleah pauses, the tip of the quill hovering just above the parchment. She looks up at Iangold "I'm assuming that if I sign I am only committing myself to this exercise, and not others."

Should she be given the nod she will proceed with her signature.

Noting Murphy's disappointment all she can do is give an apologetic shrug "I am sorry, but if it's something Wardd thinks I should proceed with then it's something I just have to do. You have no idea how much bad luck would befall me if I went against his wishes. I'll do my best not to obligate anyone else though". She is clearly quite superstitious.

He knows that Bliss tends to follow Alleah's lead, so he simply shrugs his shoulders and goes back to studying the documents.

At Hazel's declaration that he will not sign - he appreciate's his friend's loyalty, and understands his position, but adds no comments. Murphy figures he himself is likely to sign - but not before he reads it, and perhaps haggles a few key points.

When Alleah explains her actions, Murphy listens. He looks down at the papers, over to Iangold, and back to Alleah. A smile grows. "Well, it should be interesting - Wardd and Ffloy in cahoots!"

He might not have brought up Alleah's allegiance to Wardd in front of the cleric of Ffloy, but she herself did so. The luck of the draw, he thinks to himself.

"Broker Iangold will do. that is what the people and my brothers of Ffloy call me. and no, the documents are for each individual. while you may call yourself the Himble's Sword together we do not had the necessary paperwork to enfranchise you as a entity that would allow only one representative signer to so bound the group. these papers are required of everyone that will be going however. they cover such details as liability, healing afterwards if so required, who will receive your remaining compensation in the event that you do not return and so on." Iangold says.

he seems relatively neutral towards the group, though seems to like Hazel the best.

Murphy's glance over the documents reveal them to be what Iangold said with no malicious intent evident. Just lots of boring fine print.

OOC: Just confirming that it is Hazel Iangold seems to like before I make Alleah's next suck-up post :)

Murphy (Kim McCoy)

As the documents are reasonable, Murphy says, "Well, all seems to be in order - I'm fine with whoever wishes to enter into the agreement," and initials and signs his copy. Should he die irrevocably, he asks that half of what is due him be given to Shel to share with the party as she sees fit, and half to his parents.

"Here you go, and thank you, Broker Iangold. I pray that we do our utmost to ensure the safety of the people and the caravans they bring. Tell your congregation we covet their prayers."

Allowing for a bit of conversation among the group and with the Broker, Murphy will listen and engage as appropriate, then say, "Very well. We have some preparations to attend to. Can someone see to procuring enough mounts for us all? Shall we bring a cart or wagon, or just the mounts? I need to go to the store, and pick up a few things from home. If anyone needs help, let me know.

"Shall we still meet at five hours after noon? Or a bit later? It might be wise to discuss spell selection, to let each other know what things we bring with us, and work up some basic battle plans should it come to that. Alleah, Shel, Bliss, Fatine - you all cast spells, as do I, a few. Alleah - do you feel up to creating a code for communicating coordinates and a system for letting us know what spell is to be cast? - Especially area of effect spells, so we'll know not to run into a target area. For example, Shel might call out 'rainbow to the fore' if she plans to cast a color spray on those right in front of her. You all likely can come up with something better than that."

Hazel ignores Iangold, and don't sign.
"Well, I need to buy some bullets, and that's it! Faoil is my mount, and I am not very handy with magic, yet. I say we depart as late as possible, in case "something" happens in the town... I still don't trust those Ffloy guys."

Do we need to go to the catacombs to buy mundane items?

Yep, go to the Catacombs for mundane items.

OOC: Well, he still has 22 bullets, so I think he is good.

Bliss (AC22, HP23) (Cayzle)

Bliss listens to the talk of strategy.

"Well, Mister Murphy, truth is that in a fight I usually am not casting magic at all. Except if the fight goes long, I might renew my shrink spell. What I do best is hide and shoot bolts at enemies. From far away, ideally. It is easier to stay hid if you are a good ways out, and my sweet bah here can shoot a long ways."

"Mostly I like my magic for doing fun stuff after fights."

Mookie cocks his head and smirks at his master, but does not say anything.

"What?" demands Bliss.

Mookie stays quiet.

Bliss shrugs. "Anyway, I like your doggie, Hazel. And if you ever need some bullets or ammo or stuff, I'm pretty good at making weapons and things. They taught me that kind of stuff in the Mailed Fist."

Bliss shows off the Mailed Fist insignia on his shirt. "See? That little hammer there means I'm a weaponsmith."

Fatine makes her mark on the papers. "Hmm," Fatine says. "Pony, huh? I don' usually be ridin' dem, but seein as how we need to move all quick, I guess I could see my way to gettin' one. Where do I go 'round here to find me a nice pony?"

do we buy mounts through catacombs too?
