Scourge Departs

The Scourge Departs - Extra Post (DM Cayzle)
Monday August 18th, 2014 7:41:39 PM

Faust finds that the shells are mundane, nonmagical, and just engraved by craft.

Rag wants to know who STURTEVANT is. Yeshua wonders if he is a good guy. Zero wants to find him and get him to fix things.

The name seems familiar to Evaris ... maybe because that's the fellow who just gave you some rewards and met with you to discuss the Scourge and the threat it poses, oh, just a few days ago!?

The message delivered by the Scourge rings some bells among the heroes who call Plateau City home. Lowell asks Emrys to elaborate, and he explains it all, saying, "Sturtevant is the High Lord Mayor of Plateau City. We met with him just the other day."

You learn (or are reminded) that a rogue magician is unleashing monsters on New Elenna. He is trying to threaten Lord Mayor Sturtevant. He is a dragon-focused madman, driven to the brink by the catastrophic plague that ended the Dragon Nation in Dragon Bay. He thinks something the Mayor can do will help him bring back the dragons to the bay. The Mayor has refused, and the monstrologer is unleashing monsters to force his hand. Recently, the Plateau City heroies battled mutant owlbears, dire mosquitoes, and awakened sabre-tooth tigers that were unleashed on the city. Now this "Draco" is sending the Scourge to ravish the coastline.

The Mayor asked Doctor Shrubgrass to prepare you for the invasion and to stop the Scourge so that he does not have to give in to Draco's demands.

Royston has now arrived in a ship from Plateau City. The others arrived faster mounted on rented hippogriffs.

Grell is ready to fight the monster.

Ariach wants to know the plan.

The town elders approach you. They welcome you as protectors and share their food with you each night. They ask if the town should be evacuated, or if the party will defeat the monster when it comes back.

OOC: Friends, you have three days to prepare. Let me know when you are ready. Now is your chance to decide what to do!

Zero took all the information in. Can we beat that thing? he asked aloud. We need to learn all that we can about that creature. It's strengths and weaknesses. It's knock out punches and it's vulnerabilities.

Evaris [Water Walk; Divine Favor]

"One thing we ought to do is return the hippogriffs, since we seem to have time," Evaris says.

"Other than that....we've been given hints that this Draco fellow is probably more than we can handle. We need to negotiate with him, which means we need to get him to talk to us. He's obsessed with dragons, which means Sir Royston and Zero perhaps have the best chance of attracting his notice, providing our new friend Zero can change into something draconic."

You see a young human male with dark brown hair hanging loosely to his shoulders. His eyes are bright red, with white irises flecked with orange near the pupil. His skin on his hands and face is a striking blend of humanoid and draconic features, with sweeping horns and tiny scales growing from his skin and bones. He is dressed in a gentleman courtier's outfit, with coat, shirt, cravat, and trousers. He is tall and lanky, with a wiry frame and straight posture.

"Am I late to the party?"

Emrys welcomes Royston and says, "Sorry you missed it. The dragon turtle might have listened to you." He also thanks the town elders for their generosity. He tries to assure them that the Vanguard and their new friends from Cthonia are going to do everything in their power to resolve this issue.

He then looks back down at one of the discarded turtle shells ... "Maybe we use this as a focus for a little scrying."

Grell looks over at the others, still very frustrated. "I, for one am going to protect this town with my life. I will not stand by and witness more distruction to this town." He takes his hippogriff over to Evaris. "They would be a huge tactical asset, but I understand you wanting to return them." Grell turns to Ariach and Lowell. "So, where do we begin on our preparations to protect the town? "

Lowell nods to Evaris's statement. "Yeah, returning our hippogriffs might be the best choice. After all, we don't want them to get hurt!"

Lowell sighs at his brother's question, still a little upset about the whole hero thing. "Well, as Zero said, we need to learn more about the Scourge. We can't fight something if we don't know its weaknesses are. However, I think that we need to try to find Draco and negotiate with him. The Scourge might be too much for us to handle! Besides, our orders were to negotiate with Draco, not fight the Scourge. We might be able to stop the attack if we can make Draco listen to us!"

If we let him know that the High Lord Major has sent us to negotiate, he will talk to us. Then we have a chance to find a weakness we can use on him."

"As for the...'scourge', it's definitely a dragon turtle; it is different from a textbook one though, so I expect it to be stronger, have different abilities or both, when compared to your...erm, 'everyday dragon turtle', if anyone can actually say that.", says Faust.

"If it comes to it, however, I believe it can be taken down, just not pleasantly so. It's quite likely to bring any of us to death's door if we approach, so we'd need to kite it from a safe distance."

"It is also tragically impervious to fire, unlike the murdersalad of weeks past, so a visit to the Catacombs is in order."

The Town Elders, as well as the Eldest, a middle-aged smiling skinny fellow named Gruback, listen as you discuss the issue.

Zero wants more information and wonders if you can beat the Scourge. Yeshua agrees.

Evaris is immediately concerned about returning the hippogriffs, and looking ahead, about negotiating with Draco, especially that Zero and Royston may be a help there. The problem in the middle future -- the Scurge -- he does not mention.

Lowell agrees with Evaris and Zero -- return the hippogriffs, find out more about the Scourge, and negotiate with Draco.

Speaking of whom, Royston appears, and his friends fill him in.

Grell is determined to make a stand when the Scourge returns.

Faust is also confident that the monster can -- and should -- be opposed.

Rag stands with Grell, though not quite with the same degree of vehemence.

Ariach wants more guidance and wonders if there is a way to get the Lord High Mayor a message.

Town Eldest Gruback speaks up. "I can send a message to the Lord High Mayor," he says. "Every day, I write a report in my Book of Doomes. And every day, at the appointed hour, as I stand there, a wizard looks for me in a crystal ball and reads what I have written. In this way I can send a detailed message."

"I had expected to report what has happened here, and the words on the shells. What other message would you like me to send?"

"Do we want to keep the hippogriffs, or return them?" he continues. "Those that want to keep them...I assume you mean to pay for them? We left Plateau City in a bit of a scramble, and many of you pleaded poverty, so as far as I know I'm paying for all of this. The Scourge - a respite before the storm? (DM Cayzle)
Wednesday August 20th, 2014 8:51:14 PM

Answers to excellent questions:

How big is this town in area? Population?

It is a small fishing town of maybe 10,000 souls in the town limits, with countryfolk filling the surrounding area.

Can we get a drawing of its general shape?

Nope. Your DM does not have the bandwidth and fails to see the need. Why?

How wide is the beachhead, and how far along the coast near the town does it stretch?
Is the beachhead clear, or are there rocky outcroppings?

See combat maps, especially the early ones. The harbor is between the two stone jetties. THe blue water near the shore is the tidal zone. After that it gets deep fast. She shore is rocky north and south of the harbor.

How close are buildings to the beach? Are there docks or piers?

See combat maps, especially the early ones.

How deep is the water until it reaches the shelf? How deep after the shelf?

Tidal zone varies from zero to six feet deep. After that, Zero says that its at least 50 to 75 feet deep 100 feet from shore.

What is the difference in waterline between high-tide and low-tide? i.e. Is there a mudflat or tidal flat?

See above.

Are there any merchant- or capital-grade ships in the water beside the one that carried Royston?

Nope.

How many fishing trawlers are in port, and what size of nets do they carry?

See initial and final maps, add a half dozen not shown.

Are there any whaling ships in port? Do they carry harpoons?

Nope.

What siege weaponry was on the ship, any other ship in port, or in the town?

None.

Does the town have a guard or militia? What missile weapons do they have?

A couple constables of the peace is all. You can buy bows and crossbows in the general mercantiles, of which there are three.

If our fight is in the water, we will need some water breathing and walking spells and potions. What does the town have regarding anything like them that could help us?

None in town, but your new friends have resources like that.

The heroes continue to debate strategy. The Eldest sets down his observations in his magical book. In due course, an archon appears with a letter for him and another for the party.

"I'm ordered to lend you whatever aid I can," says Gruback, reading, "And also to remove my people to the shelter of the hills before the third day."

Your letter reads as follows:

To the Vanguard Group of Adventurers and the heroes new-come over Dragon Bay, welcome, by the grace of Sturtevant, Lord High Mayor of Plateau City and Guardian of the Realm of New Elenna.

I am depending on you to defeat this threat to the town of Bray and to do so with whatever force is required. The magician known as Draco will employ his minion or minions against you, but will surely not appear himself. Defeating his creatures will impress him, so do so if possible. If you can defeat them by nonlethal means, or through an offer of quarter, then excellent, but do not hold back any force or neglect to use any means necessary. Your priority is to turn back this attack. Use all your powers to do so, with the grace of the gods.

The archon offers to lead your hippogriffs back to Plateau City if you so desire.

The paladin makes a sweeping gesture toward the town. "We must force the enemy to fight on our terms. We will need to organize able-bodied workers from the town, we have much to do before they evacuate. First, we need erect picket lines along the beach, with staked pitfalls in the gaps. Preferably every twenty feet until they reach roads. Second, we need to collapse the first row of buildings along the entire beachfront to create a rubble wall. We will keep three buildings intact as chokepoints and force them to fight through the interiors. Teams on rooftops will provide missile volley support against targets making their way through the pickets."

He holds up fingers to count. "We need workers. We need axes, hammers, and picks to collapse buildings. We need shovels for pits, and timber and rope for pickets and stakes. Friday August 22nd, 2014 10:36:13 AM

[OOC: I really did not intend you guys to go shopping, but you DO have three days, so go for it if you can be quick! Also, why does a pin grant access to the Catacombs? The nearest branch is in Plateau City. Also, please do not expect the townsfolk to help out. They see that (according to New Elenna tradition) as YOUR job!]

Yeshua is willing to stand up and fight.

Royston can get a dozen or so missile weapons, but volunteers to use them are impossible to find.

Grell must have been passing notes the day they discussed dragon turtles. He recalls that they are dragons ... with turtle shells ... and a breath weapon? Grell looks for fortifications, but the warehouses at the shore are made of wood, and would not withstand a breath weapon ...

Emrys volunteers to enlarge and/or reduce them what wants to be little or big. It lasts minutes, so it has to be recast ... The wise Emrys wonders if there are any NPC witches around ... considering you could fly back to Plat City in 6 hours on a hippogriff, sure, you could go back there, but who would want to come to this dangerous region? Are there any nearby? Call it a 10% chance ... and the DM rolls a 02! Well, fate smiles, for sure!

Now that you mention it, Emrys does recall a witch who lives in the hills west of town, near an apple orchard. His name is Loriss, and if Emrys recalls correctly, he is a retired adventurer who has a spirit blade as a familiar. Emrys would be surprised if he does not lead a local coven.

Faust discusses visiting the Catacombs. A hippogriff could get him there and back in a day ...

Lowell talks to the local fishers. He learns that it used to be they would not even go out on the water to fish. They would wade in the shallows and cast nets, or sit on the jetties and use lines they would cast out. They were too afraid of the dragons of Dragon Bay. But then there was a plague and the dragons died. Some of their bodies washed up on shore. There was a brisk trade in dragonhide for a while, and with the money from that they bought boats and started fishing out on the bay. They are super scared that if the dragons come back, they will have to go back to the old ways of fishing. And they are afraid of the Scourge. But they think the worst it can do is come up to the shallows and destroy the wharfs and warehouses, because Dragons are magically forbidden to come on land. That's because of the Dragon Sentinels.

On shore, Lowell notes that only wooden, easily replaceable structures are near the water. Stone buildings, homes, shops, taverns, etc, are all set well back, out of breath weapon range.

Zero suggests ignoring the Scourge and attacking Draco, his master. But how to find him? How to get to him? And what about Sturtavent's orders?

Ariach is glad to send the hippogriffs home -- but will anyone need them for a shopping trip? The warrior is glad too that his friends will join him in a fight. But is it wise to stay all bunched up together against a breath weaponized foe?

Zero, Ariach and Evaris agree that a plan is a good idea. But what is the plan?

Royston suggests falling back and making the monster fight on a field of their choosing. The Elders of the town are willing to help get the folk to work on defenses, pits, spikes, etc. They will even rip down, booby trap, or otherwise sacrifice the wooden warehouses at the water's edge, but not the stone buildings further back. The consensus is that no dragon can step ashore (or fly over land).

Rag enjoys being big and considers the options ...

Emrys inspects the turtle shells, but they are really just shells that are carved. By knives or tools, looks like. He suggests ways to trick a dragon onto shore.

Here, let your kindly DM give you a map showing more of the seaside part of Bray.

Then the Monk observes the map and wonders if they are truely planning on ambushing the Dragon Turtle in order to kill it... there must be other ways to divert this attack... Quietly Rag listens as the plans are being discussed. "Yes yes!! he thinks as Zero Mc Hero mentions diplomatics to solve this matter.

"And then again... why not go after the root cause and find this Draco instead of waiting for his minions...
Perhaps we could send Draco a message asking for negotiations. That we are an independant group of adventurers who seek to end this dispute in a peaceful manner?"

Yeshua considers the make up of the town vs. his and Truman's abilities.... "Truman and I are better at a coordinated attack on top or from the flanks of a foe... We don't like to use ranged weapons, so we need to get in close to attack... Is there a way we can harpoon it with some long ropes or other items that could interfere it with trying to fly away... If those ropes are tied off to something sturdy, then we might get it to sit still for a longer time..."

He'll look for something like that, some wicked, barbed harpoons that were used in hunting whales, and hundreds of feet of rope. His goal is to tie them to strong building supports, etc... where the barbed ends would stick in the dragon once Yeshua stabbed them into it...

"The beach is probably the best we'll be able to do. We should focus our efforts on doing that.

"I do like the plan of making a 'trap' out of a fishing boat, but I'd hate to see these good folk have another boat destroyed. Perhaps they might be able to salvage enough materials from the destroyed boats to cobble something together? Does anyone have ranks in Craft Trap? Note that the rules do not have harpoons. You could use lassos or bolas, but given the size and str of the monster, what could possibly hold it? Even that Tentacles spell would have a hard time grappling it. What can you do to make it smaller or weaker? What are its weaknesses? I like that a plan is shaping up, but I need more specifics.

If nobody is going to visit the Catacombs, then we should take the Archon up on its generous offer to return the hippogriffs for us."

He continues, "In the meantime, I think we have the elements of a plan. We ask the fisher-folk to cobble together a boat out of the wreckage, load it up with some kind of nasty surprise, and place it in the harbor. We stand on the beach and wait for the attack. We lure the creature as close to the beach as we can, hitting it with ranged attacks until it gets to shore. Then our melee fighters can strike.

"If the townsfolk can help with ranged attacks, that would be wonderful, but we cannot expect them to put themselves in harm's way. That's our job.

"The idea is that by defeating the creature, we will earn enough respect from Draco that he will speak with us.

Grell gets together the pieces of another wreck ... but for what exactly?

Lowell talks to the locals, and learns that long ago a mysterious race of people lived here, masters of magic called the Teucri. They created magical wards that kept the dragons from leaving Dragon Bay. After the Teucri left, the people generally lived in peace with the dragons. Sometimes they would leave cows or sheep at the water's edge, and dragons would come by to eat the creatures and leave pearls behind. Sometimes there would be arguments or disputes, and dragons would wade up to the shallows and breathe on whatever they could reach. That's why the town is set back several hundred feet.

What I actually wanted was a cheval de frise, which can be produced in units then arranged as partitions. Sir Royston will direct the townsfolk in making enough of them to stretch across the map you have provided in two lines. The first line will be all of column AB, with gaps at AB4 and AB31. The second line will be all of column Y, with gaps at Y4 and Y31.

They will also construct czech hedgehogs out of shorter sharpened beams. These will be placed underwater in two lines. The first line will be at column AK on every even-numbered square (AK2, AK4, etc.). The second line will be at column AI on every odd-numbered square (AI1, AI3, etc.). These will, of course, skip over any squares with a wharf or jetty.

Proposed mechanics:

The cheval de frise on the beach and czech hedgehogs in the bay will act as Colossal-size caltrops, dealing 1d8 damage (Damage progression: Medium 1 damage, Large 1d2, Huge 1d4, Gargantuan 1d6, Colossal 1d8). "Each time a creature moves into an area covered by caltrops (or spends a round fighting while standing in such an area), it runs the risk of stepping on one. Make an attack roll for the caltrops (base attack bonus +0) against the creature. For this attack, the creature's shield, armor, and deflection bonuses do not count. If the creature is wearing shoes or other footwear, it gets a +2 armor bonus to AC. If the attack succeeds, the creature has stepped on a caltrop. The caltrop deals 1 (1d8 Colossal) point of damage, and the creature's speed is reduced by half because its foot is wounded. This movement penalty lasts for 24 hours, until the creature is successfully treated with a DC 15 Heal check, or until it receives at least 1 point of magical healing. A charging or running creature must immediately stop if it steps on a caltrop. Any creature moving at half speed or slower can pick its way through a bed of caltrops with no trouble."

The Scourge - a respite before the storm? (DM Cayzle)

OOC to Royston: This is much clearer ... and you'll have to make two Knowledge Engineering checks at DC10 ... one for the cheval de frise, one for the czech hedgehogs.

Evaris [Water Walk; Divine Favor]

The Plan

We prepare defenses and hiding places on land. Royston is coordinating a cheval de frise, along with some underwater czech hedgehogs. Ariach is digging a trench for concealment. Yeshua is finding a boat for he and Truman to hide under.

I propose placing the ranged fighters in sight in front of one of the openings in the cheval de frise. Possibly in front of the nothernmost wooden building, which would put the ranged fighters in AC-AE 5-8.

We cast buff spells, then the melee fighters take up their positions, wherever they think is best. Zero assumes whatever form he has chosen.

We load up a fishing boat with acid flasks and set it afloat on the bay.

The "go" signal is when the creature attacks the decoy boat. That is the signal for the ranged fighters to open up. As the creature gets closer to shore, the ranged fighters can duck behind the cheval de frise.

As the creature approaches, Zero, in whatever form he's chosen, tries to maneuver around behind it.

When the creature comes to shore, the melee fighters attack, hopefully flanking with Zero.

It is very important that the melee fighters wait until the creature is as close to shore as it's going to get. We do not want to be fighting this thing in the middle of the bay.

That, as far as I can tell, is the plan. Are there further refinements, or can we go with that?

Ariach expects that the scourge will be forced to a spot somewhere between the two wooden buildings closest to the shore.
He discusses with his friends if it will be useful to dig the trench in between the two lines cheval de frise (around Z18)
He proposes to station other hideouts in the north and south of the trench. It will give one part of the melee group at least a chance of flanking the beast.

They'll both hide under it, digging a big enough hole so that they can be deep in the hole with just the top of their heads above ground, but still concealed below the boat. The boat will have a few holes for them to see through, looking like normal holes that an old rotted boat would have from worms, termites, etc...

Their spells (cast at the beginning by allies) would be: Barkskin and Magic Fang from Zero on both,.. They'll have Resist Energy as backup spells, once they identify the creature and what it might have as an energy or breath weapon...

Since they have technically 3 days through all of this, we'll assume they memorize

A fate of which his proposal is responsible. To use this man and his coven will have a cost that must be paid in blood ... a price the powers that be will demand. He sees this man's death too high a price to pay. Emrys realizes he must rely on his own abilities and that of his friends, those whom this task is fated to belong. Instead of asking what he originally came for, he instead asks, "may we have a cask of your special cider? It will lift the spirits and the confidence of my companions as we make our preparations. We could use all the luck we can take."

Whatever help is required of him, he will lend his magic and what little physical strength he has. He can at least lift their spirits with an encouraging word or an inspiring song. He is impressed with what plans they've come up with while he was away.

Emrys will attempt to make some potions on his own. Back at the inn, he asks for permission to use the kitchen and then he will take out his tiny masterwork cauldron, from his backpack, and also summon a small-sized cauldron via the Witch's Tool spell. There he will begin making Enlarge Person potions. (don't know how many I can make, even with two cauldrons going at once.)

The Scourge Returns! Round 0 (DM Cayzle)
Tuesday September 2nd, 2014 12:08:26 AM

The fortifications are set. The Eldest of Bray stops by to offer last minute help before he departs: some small magic items the villagers have hoarded: three potions of Cure Moderate Wounds, a +1 dagger, a medal that gives a +4 bonus on profession (soldier) checks [FATE ITEM], and a belt buckle that gives a +2 on saves vs spider poison [FATE ITEM].

OOC: If you want to use any of these items, declare it in your next post or I'll assume they are set aside until after the battle!!!

The decoy boat is loaded with acid and set afloat. There are 15 vials strategically placed amidships.

Evaris sets out his plan. So long as you follow this plan, you get a +1 on ALL die rolls, and Evaris gains a +2 on ALL die rolls. The plan:

Place the ranged fighters in sight in front of one of the openings in the cheval de frise.

Ariach stands in the center trench of the three he has dug. It gives him partial cover. [OOC: Make a stealth check if you wish to try to remain unseen.]

Faust has amended the plan a bit: Phantom Steed and/or Fly for movement, cast as soon as the Scourge is seen; Try to reason with the Scorge once more?; Mirror Image; Enervation x2; Ray of Exhaustion x2 (with True Strike to assure it hits); then Magic Missile and Ray of Enfeeblement.

According to plan, Lowell, Evaris, Emrys, and Faust start the combat in the north, on the shore. (see map)

Enlarged, Rag starts behind a wood building in the south. (see map)

Zero in chimera form is at ... ???

Yeshua and Truman are hiding in a shallow pit behind some boat wreckage. (see map) They have cover, and a resulting +8 on stealth checks. [OOC: Please roll those stealth checks for me.]

OOC to Lowell: Note that your Range Increment is not your range limit! You can shoot up to ten times your range increment! Your hand crossbow has a range of 30 ft. You can shoot 30-60 ft away at -2; 60 to 90 ft away at -4, 90-120 ft away at -6, etc. up to 300 ft away.

Emrys has been busy, having made three Enlarge Person potions (at what caster level? That will set duration and cost). When the big day dawns, he stands with the ranged types in the north, having distributed his potions.

The Scourge has appeared at the far edge of the map. It is flying low, toward you.

MAP NOTES: The map now shows a five foot grid, but I have retained the old coordinates on a 10 ft basis for continuity. If you need to pinpoint a square, please refer to a grid coordinate and then upper right, upper left, lower right, or lower left.

PLEASE change your starting position if desired, then post your move for round one. You can all see the Scourge. Whether or not it sees you depends on stealth checks, if any.

Wednesday September 3rd, 2014 12:40:31 AM

Ariach stands ready to fight, but he uses the partial cover of the trench to stay hid. His base 16 Stealth check is boosted by +1 per 10 ft of distance, so when the enemy has finished moving, the DC for it to spot Ariach is 16+15 = 31.

Evaris, not hiding at all, casts a buff on Yeshua. The Shield of Faith spell gives Yeshua a +3 deflection bonus for the next 8 minutes, but Yeshua already has a +2, and the bonuses do not stack. So that boosts Yeshua's AC by +1 net. Evaris whispers that he will cast the spell on Truman next round.

Yeshua and Truman are both well hid, with a DC42+12 = 54.

The Scourge Returns! Round 1 (DM Cayzle)
Wednesday September 3rd, 2014 10:04:35 AM

Sorry, here is the key and current locations ...

S = Scales (Royston) at 31Z
R = Enlarged Rag at 30X (hiding next to wood building)
G = Grell at 21Z (partial cover with trench)
A - Ariach at 17Z (partial cover with trench)
Z = Chimera Zero at 17AH (35 ft up) (Sorry, should have made the icon large in size)
Y&T = Yeshua and Truman at 11AD (cover with trench and boat wreckage)
V = Evaris at 10AD
F = Faust at 9AG
M = Emrys at 6AC
L = Lowell at 5AC

That's 10 PCs and an animal companion.

THE SCOURGE is at 17-18-AP-AQ.

Note that the map is on a 5 ft grid, but the map coordinates are on a 10 ft grid. If you need more precision, note the grid space and then upper right, upper left, lower right, or lower left.

I am thinking that the next map will only show the middle of the map ... not the areas east of the road, nor the areas west of the Scourge.

[DM NOTES: The Planning bonus gives (per the ability description) "anyone who was present at the planning session gains a +1 on all die rolls, and the oathbound gains a +2 on die rolls." That's ALL DIE ROLLS. So Evaris's channel should grant not 4 healing but 4+2=6. All saves vs dragon breath should add that +1 (+2 for Evaris). The roll for the cure potion should be at +1 for Yeshua.

ALSO, for Yeshua and EVERYBODY: Roll each die seperately when healing because you get to reroll 1s. And Yeshua, that potion cannot be 2d8+2 because Cure Moderate Wounds has to have a minimum CL 3, so it should be 2d8+3.

Evaris, please give yourself an extra +2 hp from that channel and Yeshua, give yourself an extra +2 hp from the channel, an extra +1 hp planning bonus on your potion, and and extra +1 hp because your potion is 2d8+3 not 2d8+2.]

Scales hustles toward the foe.

Ariach dashes to the next trench.

Evaris suffers mightily and then mitigates some of the damage by channelling.

Rag wants to run to his friends' aid, but you can only run in a straight line, so that's out. Instead, like Scales, he hustles around the corner of the building, taking a double move.

Grell drinks his potion, and then, enlarged, dashes north.

Lowell takes cover, shoots, and misses.

[OOC: EVERYONE remember to add +1 to attacks and damage for planning and +1 to attack and damage from bard song!! That's +2/+2!]

Faust moves and wisely casts his True Strike. He sees the shimmering shell of force surrounding the monster and perhaps correctly deduces that the translucent magical barrier would be as effective against touch attacks as against physical ones.

[OOC: Fauast, what is your preferred elevation? And sorry, no, you cannot extend your range with spells in exchange for a penalty on attacks. Spell range and missile range increments are very different. Besides, you do not want to take any penalties on your attacks in this fight. The monster is AC30!]

Yeshua and Truman stay hid as Yeshua drinks a potion. [OOC: see notes above.]

Emrys strives heroically, casting a spectral hand that delivers 21 hp healing to Yeshua. Let us hope Evaris survives this generosity! :-)

[OOC: Emrys, you get that +1 planning bonus on ley checks and cure rolls!]

Chimera Zero (now large on the map at last) flaps clumsily north. [OOC: Sorry, cannot charge and breathe.] He ends up not far from Faust, 35 ft up.

=====

THE SCOURGE launches itself at Evaris, clearly willing to finish the job it started last round! But it slams, like a sparrow against a glass window, into a magical barrier at the water's edge. It pauses, shakes its head, and tries to turn south instead toward Zero. Turning is a DC15 Fly check for it, and it has a +5 on its skill, and rolls a 10, failing by five, which forces it to land. [OOC: the prior was a move action.]

With its remaining action, it walks down the beach on all fours, ending move directly under Zero, looking up at him and snarling. 35 ft up in the air, Zero thinks he may just be within its reach!

Evaris casts another buff, this time on Truman. The missile-wielding specialist and caster otherwise stays close to the very monster who, should it breathe again, might well reduce the Oathbound to a pile of steaming rubbish. Or, feel free to use the move action remaining to you?

Ariach drinks his potion, becoming bigger. He wants to move toward the Scourge. However, the giant bed of caltrops is between him and the monster. He can either go through at normal speed and possibly suffer the effects of the caltrops, or he can pass through at half speed. Your kindly DM pushes you through without damage at half speed.

Enlarged Rag rushes up next to enlarged Ariach.

Yeshua and Truman pounce on the monster. As they approach, the SCOURGE takes an attack of opportunity on Yeshua. It strikes Yeshua with its bite, hitting AC27 for 27 damage! That's a good and clever thought, but if there are any such allies of the dragon, they are not perceptible to Emrys. His casting of See Invisibility reveals nothing yet!

Emrys also looks keenly at the stranger shimmering translucent force-shell that the dragon exhibits. He thinks that if the SCOURGE were in origin a dragon turtle, then it is as if somehow the monster's shell has been magically changed into a field of force. It is an effect literally never encountered before, as best he can tell. Then again, who ever heard of shadow-walking owlbears, say? The foe you face may have some way to grant unusual magical-item-like powers to its monstrous allies.

HOWEVER, Emrys, with his keen eyes, and Yeshua, with his proximity, sees that the SCOURGE is wearign a collar.

Enlarged Grell wishes he could run to the SCOURGE, but like his friend Ariach, those caltrops prevent such a plan. Instead, he picks his way through the caltrops and then rushes up, not far from Ariach and Rag.

Lowell pauses to see what happens, ready to fire again next round.

Zero takes a five foot step closer. [OOC: Zero, are you hovering? Please make a DC15 Fly check to do so, keeping in mind the penalties for being large and clumsy.

Zero breathes lightning! The SCOURGE fails its save and takes 23 electrical damage!

Scales moves north, calling out in Draconic.

The SCOURGE answers in its way, bellowing in draconic: Highlight to display spoiler: {No Peace! Only Death To Humans!}

Then it answers in another way, rearing up and breathing again!

Yeshua and Truman grunt as the creature takes a nice bite out of them, but they shrug it off and continue their attack, calling out, "Can someone try to reduce that force protecting it, as we're having trouble breaking through it!!!"

Truman leaps to the side to avoid the steam (Reflex 24 + Evasion so no damage) and his fur helps him escape any injuries...

They continue ripping and tearing at it, trying desperately to get through its armor, combining their assaults... (Combined attack feat) They manage to barely get through its armor, finding a sensitive spot and hitting an artery...

Emrys considers his next actions carefully. He doesn't understand why Evaris doesn't heal himself. However, he must focus on the Scourge. He recalls the potency of Draco's magic and how his almost best dispelling attempt failed.

He draws a small glass dagger from a scabbard on his belt. He thinks to himself that it would've been nice to have a coven beside him, but he'll have to settle being a coven of one. Emrys begins to chant the blood ritual and he then cuts his hand with the dagger. Blood seems to forcefully pour from the tiny wound. His skin turns slightly pale from the loss.

Faust hovers at about 20ft from the ground, just outside the scourge's direct melee range.

If I'm still able to amend last round, Faust will do the following:

Fly into range for the Ray of Exhaustion which has a range of 50ft so I think he can hit it from where he is? Though he prefers to fly to AK11 or so and not be in its direct path.

Regardless, he fires off his ray, hitting touch AC 46 (I nearly crit with that thing!), so the scourge must make a Fort save vs. DC 19 or be exhausted for 7 minutes, if it saves, it gets fatigued instead.

As for this round, he'll cast True Strike on himself once again, and move to AL10, just to keep out of sight.

If unable to amend last round, then he'll simply fly into range (AK11-ish) and fire the ray, hitting touch AC 26 instead (missing the True Strike +20 bonus) with the other same effects.

Round 5!

Yeshua and Truman hit hard for 35 damage!

Evaris steps back, casts his spiritual hamer spell, uses it to attack, but misses.

Emrys, while still inspiring courage, casts a spell to boost his casting power.

Rag, near death after that blast of steam, moves to the side and heals himself.

Zero lands and makes a full attack, flanking with Truman.

[OOC: This is a good example of why it is wise to roll all damages that even are close. Zero hit vs ACs 27, 29, and 30, but only rolled damage for the hit vs AC30. When he realized he forgot his flanking bonus, and the hit on AC29 also succeeded, he had to come back and roll it. And now, with the exhaustion dropping the SCOURGE's AC by three in last round's revision, the hit vs AC27 also lands! However, your DM hesitates to delay the game, and rolls that damage himself.]

Zero attacks with a blizzard of claws and teeth, landing three hits, inflicting 52 damage!

Scales moves up.

Enlarged Grell wades into the surf. As he comes near, the SCOURGE, which has a longer reach, makes an AoO on him. The SCOURGE hits AC36 for 20 damage to Grell.

Grell returns the favor, attacking brutally, inflicting 21 damage. The extra fire damage does not affect the monster.

[OOC: Grell, please update your header. Did you save vs breath in Round 4 (Reflex save DC24 for 47 damage or half). Plus see below for more damage.]

Lowell fires, but his crossbow jams! Darn it!

Fausts backpedals in midair and casts another True Strike.

Ariach holds his position.

===== ===== =====

The SCOURGE is exhausted, sorely wounded, surrounded by giants, and so it seeks to escape!

First it attacks Grell, hoping to take him down! It snaps with its dragon beak -- hitting AC31 for 50 damage!

Then it flies up and away!

Truman, Yeshua, Zero, and Grell, if you are alive and up -- you each can take an AoO against the monster. It is AC27 now.

Then it flies straight up, at half speed because it is flying up, and at half that because it is exhausted. It nonetheless rises 80 feet into the air.

As the massive jaws wrap around Grell, the warrior is surprised by how much blood comes from the wound. His armor quickly turning sticky from the blood, Grell muses how it really isn't that bad. He'd always imagined dying to be awfully painful, but that just wasn't the case. Sure, there was that suddenly intense burst of pain as the creature first attacked him, but now, as the cold numbness settled into his limbs, Grell smiles. After all, it is the prayer of every orc to die in glorious battle. And face it, it doesn't get much better than being taken down by a turtle dragon!

Slumping to the ground, Grell watches as his sword falls into the ocean...the flames extinguished almost as rapidly as his own life force that is slowly seeping through his armor, Grell turns to Ariach and grins, hoping the warrior can hear him, since it's getting harder to talk. "Ariach, you've got to promise me. Promise me you'll find Vaniime and tell her that I love her and that I'm sorry I didn't go with her. Promise me you'll look after Lowell. I've always had his back and I won't be there to look after him anymore. And tell K'nara that I understand now and that I shouldn't have been a jerk for all those years."

Taking one last breath, Grell smiles as the Wold begins to grow dark, safe in the knowledge that Emrys will compose an epic ballad worth of the few deeds he was able to accomplish in his life. Cold and oh so tired, Grell lays back on the beach and listens as the sounds of the surf slowly fade away into the wonderful nothingness of eternal rest.

Faust cheers and shouts praises about the victory against the dragon from the sky! "YES!! WE DID IT! Congratulations everyo-..."

Doesn't take long for him to notice the lack of cheering from below, he lowers to the others silently, just taking a glimpse of the inert body of Grell. He is unsure as for what to say and opts for silence but, just as he lowers some more, the warrior gasps and coughs blood, coming back to the living, even if he's in horrible shape.

He hurries to the bloodied man, cure light wounds wand in hand, "Excuse me, he needs healing!", he says, brushing everyone aside and watching his wand fizzle couple times before it goes off ((OOC: Are we still counting rounds?))...for 4 HP

If anyone who can actually use the wand tries to take it away from Faust, he won't object the action.

(Ok, in that case, Emrys will heal Grell for 12 points with his Cure Serious Wounds wand and with his Spectral Hand if he can't reach him.)

It takes more than just a couple dragon breath and bites to kill a hero like Grell -- he holds on valiantly, and with his last moments in the Wold before death takes him ... Evaris and Emrys and Faust come close! Faust fumbles his wand, and it is too late! But Evaris and Emrys ARE in time, and Grell is yanked back from the precipice by the restorative efforts of his friends!

OOC: Grell, please deduct two hero points, and you are conscious!

OOC: NOW we are out of combat rounds! Congrats again on your victory!

Evaris, still kneeling next to Grell, manages to catch his breath at last.

"Well done, everyone," he says. "Now, we need to restore ourselves and get this beach cleaned up because I imagine this Draco person will be contacting us soon."

Rag remains quiet. His heart jumps up when he sees Grell is still alive but he is sad that they haven't been able ot rescue this poor creature from this Draco's grasp. It's clear that this Dragon Turtle is as much a victem as Grell almost was.

So the Monk checks on the Dragon remains...

Sir Royston narrows his eyes in thought. "You know, since we defeated this dragon, we have first rights to any treasure... and dragons scales are quite valuable. Who wouldn't want a suit of dragonscale armor?"

Emrys rushes to Grell's side. All sorrow now melted away. Grell is barraged with a hug and several curative spells all cast in rapid succession. Emrys is so relieved and happy that he doesn't even notice that two his cure spells fizzled.

(Leyline: 18, 61, 50, 2 & 100. Casting three Cure Light Wounds and two Cure Moderate Wounds. A CLW and a CMW fizzled. Heals Grell: 1d8+5=13, 1d8+5=7, 2d8+6=21... Total:41.)

After everyone calms down and Grell is no longer bloodied, Emrys considers what must be done with the Dragon Turtle. He hears Royston's suggestion and he has absolutely no problem with that. However he has one suggestion. "Before we do any carving on this beast, I wish to have a little discussion with him! I'm sure he knows where Draco is and what his plans are. Can any of you giants drag his head into the shallow water, I wish to hear him speak?"

"I was thinking the same thing. I've been wanting Dragon scale armour for some time. Very valuable. Let's see what we can recover."

Breathing a ragged breath, Grell staggers to his feet and pulls Evaris and Emrys in the Wold's biggest bear hug.

Then he pulls in Lowell and gives him the noogie of a lifetime! "You know what bro, you are AWESOME!!!"

Grell smiles at Truman's kiss, making sure he gives the tiger a good scratching behind the ears. He looks up at Yeshua with a small amount of jealously. "That is a beautiful kitty you've got there! I have a friend back at home like Truman, but we don't have the friendship that you have yet. I can't wait to see how he's doing with his gladiator training!"

Grell grunts as Emrys suggests waking the dragon back up (Int=2). "You want to wake that thing up again?! 'Cus you can count me out of that plan. I've had enough dragon for one day!" Though he is perhaps a little louder than he should be, Emrys can tell that Grell is not angry, it's just he doesn't want to be near the dragon again so close to his near death experience.

Yeshua smiles and says, "Thanks for the compliment and I'm glad you have a friend like him. Tigers are loyal companions, and I've met very few that are as close as he and I are.... He's like a brother to me and we can communicate in ways that very few others can..."

He'll continue collecting enough scales for armor for both him and Truman in the future...
