Smoke Rises

DM RobC - Sanctuary Cove
Wednesday September 3rd, 2014 6:11:33 AM

The order is given, the anchor weighed and the sails are raised. The course is set for Sanctuary Cove on Totem Island.

Zeoll spends one night of the voyage seeking guidance from above on what may lie ahead. The visions he receives are harrowing. Faces of many fey dying. Suffering. This is not unlike the dream he had earlier. It's the kind of thing that might haunt this Cradled long after he wakens.

Sam takes time to write in his journal, while Terser does what he can to assist about the ship.

Jozhur keeps alert by the bow of the ship however no other vessel (or creature) makes an appearance.

It takes several days, but by mid morning on the third day plumes of smoke can be seen long before Totem Island comes into view on the horizon.

The ship is guided closer towards Sanctuary Cove.

Masts and wreckage of three or four medium sized ships lie scattered about the bay. There are no signs of any ships still afloat from whatever disaster struck here. No bodies float in the water, and no signs of humanoid life can be seen anywhere.

It wouldn't have been the busiest of towns when at its prime. The buildings are quite spread out, and positioned in an almost disorganised way. From this distance, the buildings all look stone with thatched roofs, the streets are dirt, and there are no city walls. By all appearances it would be a small peaceful fishing village.

From the deck of the ship, the town looks like a war zone though. Scorch marks on the building walls, smoke still billowing from several rooftops, broken doors, destroyed market stalls. No living people or animals can be seen, save for birds. The gulls that peacefully bob up and down on the waves are contrasted by the carnivorous birds that currently fly over the town and can be seen picking at the few corpses that litter the streets.

The fresh sea air is tainted with the smell of smoke and death. The crew of the Lionfish are silent.

What possible reason could there be for inflicting this sort of damage on this place?

There is one long pier jutting out for ships to dock. It looks relatively unharmed and stable enough.

"This is not good. The ship is a non-negotiable necessity; it must rremain safe. We were foolish and lucky at Gullporrt. We left the ship at dock and went ashorre. How we did not lose any crrew when the sirren-call of death came, I do not know. And how the ship escaped unscathed between the evil townsfolk, the aquatic nightmarre-oids, and the pirrates who got suckerred into coming to the town ... we have to prray forr thanks, but not tempt fate again."

"We at least had the excuse that we thought Gullport was a frriendly trrade town. We have no such excuse herre. As Captain Coerr says, this is a warr zone. I believe we should eitherr land herre and then send the ship well off shorre -- orr leave this bay, come ashorre elsewherre on the island, and make a landwarrd apprroach."

"We can always send the noble and verrsatile Aexana to fly out to the ship and guide it in when it is safe."

"Maybe my vision of dying fey has made me parranoid, but this scene of devastation does nothing to allay my fearrs. I urrge us to prroceed cautiously."

Zeoll casts his Mage Armor spell, and urges his friends to prepare. Who knows? Some agent of the new cult god may surface and begin throwing fireballs around at any moment.

She clearly has no interest in supplying aid to survivors. As far as she can tell there are none anyway.

Aex-Hawk flies away from the Lionfish into the direction of the war struck town. She circles high above and slowly spirals down in order to take in as many details as possible. Occasionally of course she checks for birds that might consider her to be supper as well...

ooc: anyone heard from Ian? almost a week no posts.

DM RobC - Sanctuary Cove
Thursday September 4th, 2014 6:55:05 AM

OOC: Ian has dropped me an email explaining his situation, and that he will be returning back to posting hopefully over the next few days. If anyone wants to cover for Ian/Spire then they are very welcome to. I will throw in a Hero Point for whoever does cover for him :)

Jozhur leans over the railing to scan the waters. Thankfully he doesn't spy any menacing monsters lurking below. What he does notice is that amongst the wrecks, no sails can be seen hanging from any of the broken masts. Whatever event caused these ships to sink was quick. The crews of the ships didn't have time to raise sail and evacuate

Coer skillfully guides the ship to moor by the pier. He makes the same observations that Jozhur does, however, his time as a sailor does impart him with some extra knowledge. Some ships - specifically smaller ones - are faster to prepare than others. If there were other ships here (with working sails) then obviously they could have left more quickly. Given their absence, it is likely there are survivors somewhere.

Tula acknowledges Coer's order, and the crew quickly move to their assigned stations like a well oiled machine. What they may lack in fighting skills they more than make up for with their abilities on a deck.

Sam stays unusually quiet. It may even be disconcerting to others that the usually talkative and joyful bard is acting this way.

Terser, too, is quiet. He can't see any signs of humanoid life about the town. The outskirts of the village lack any caves or mountains, and the hamlet is instead surrounded by a thick forest. If the inhabitants here were elves then they could have easily scampered into the trees.

Magana sets the gangplank and is on her toes to do something. Something less about saving folks and more about punishing others.

Zeoll seems very concerned about the ship. In particular he doesn't like the idea of leaving it in an indefensible position. He prepares by casting his mage armor spell, while the visions of dying fey linger in the back of his mind.

Aexana agrees with Zeoll and takes to the air in the form of a hawk. Circling the village from on-high, Aex does not see any signs of sentient life. Indeed, the entire town looks deserted. Very few bodies litter the streets thankfully. As she circles lower for a closer look a large vulture makes its presence known and flies towards her with a mournful, extended - and disturbing - squawk. It backs away, but any time Aex tries to descend the vulture returns to confront Aex. Her knowledge of things natural lead her to believe the bird is guarding its territory or its food. For now it does not look to be pursuing or interested in Aex as a potential meal.

Where the pier meets the shore - below both Aex and the large vulture - more birds can be seen. Most are on the ground.

With the ship now moored, those on the Lionfish can clearly see at the other end of the pier (the town end) a mans body tied to a pole. Whereas the other corpses lie on the ground, this looks to be the only one on such a display. His head is slumped and he isn't moving. Several crows hop about the ground by his feet. In the air far above him fly a small hawk and a large vulture.

Zeoll once again offers his unsolicited advice to the Captain:

"Coerr, please, as soon as we go ashorre, orrderr the ship to set sail and find a saferr moorring away frrom this grraveyarrd of a harrborr."

The liontaur double checks that he has all his gear, and then steps onto the gangplank. "Come on, Magana, help this old taur ashore, my dear." Zeoll speaks in Tauric, in which his accent becomes his natural tongue.

He holds up a hand so that he is the first to approach the corpse. He sniffs (using his scent) and scans the ground for tracks and signs, before anyone can ruin them. He casts Detect Magic, Detect Poison, Guidance, Taur's Try (Centaur form) and Elf Vision, taking the time to concentrate as needed and to look carefuly.

He smiles at Magana, as if to say, "I'm glad to have you next to me in case there is trouble."

If Zeoll has plenty of time and is faced with no threats or distractions, and since Survival and Perception carry no penalties for failure of which I know, the old liontaur will take 20 on his Perception and Survival checks, recasting his Guidance as needed.

Survival: 31, Perception: 42

As the adventurers move off the Lionfish, the last one to debark emerges from Spire's cabin. The figure emerges, walks down the gangway, and heads down the dock. He stops at the back of the group looking over the hanging sailor. He uses his deep lore to analyze the situation.

The party disembark from the Lionfish. Coer bids Tula to take the Lionfish out of the potential safety of the harbor. She diligently sets about having the crew prepare to leave the pier, and they slowly start to sail away.

Gnome-Aexana returns to the party and reports her findings - no sentient life to be seen. She perhaps wisely chose to leave the vulture alone.

Zeoll is the first to approach the corpse. The ravens that hopped along the ground scatter to the air sounding harsh caws. Up close it can now be determined that the man is a half-elf.

Though Spire doesn't notice anything 'undead' about the man (half-elf), he does recognise monk robes when he sees them. It's possible this is the man Brother Engev was worried about.

Sam concurs with these findings but keeps his distance. The man is wearing holy garb and is indeed a half-elf. As for whether this was some ritualistic killing, that is hard to tell. The corpse certainly has a number of wounds. He was likely alive when tied to the pole and then repeatedly attacked. Torture perhaps?

Jozhur is on edge. His instinct is that this area is just not safe. His bow is drawn and all he needs now is a target.

Terser moves to cut the man down from the pole he was tied to. He checks for a pulse, but the man is quite cold and rigid. The blood surrounding the ground at the base of the pole suggests he bled out. Terser's knowledge of anatomy leads him to believe the man died recently - perhaps in the past few days.

The half-elfs robes have been torn open and his chest is covered in marks likely made by some form of whip. By his feet, a broken, woven leather cord with a small silver token in the middle of it. The symbol easily recognised as Domi's holy symbol. Likely a necklace, holy symbol, or some other item torn or pulled from his body. Dried blood stains a portion of the cord.

Spire and Zeoll then cast the first of their spells - each a Detect Magic. Other than around the party, a moderate necromancy aura is detected on the cord on the ground. Spire identifies it as a Phylactery of Positive Channeling. On closer inspection Spire notes that on the back of the token, in sylvan is etched "My Faith is my shield".

Zeoll has a number of other spells in mind to cast, but the watchful gaze of the rest of the party may make him reconsider this.

The birds that had been feeding on the corpses of the town are now circling. It has been a while since they have tasted fresh meat, and you just disturbed their last meal...

OOC: I was going to have them all at random heights, but let's just say they are all between 15 and 25feet high in the air. The pier and shore line are 10ft higher than the water below.

Jozhur isn't taking any chances, and fires on one of the giant vultures. His arrow strikes true, but the bird is still alive and flying.

Terser holds his glaive ready. His hopes lie on the druid to calm things down.

Zeoll isn't happy that Jozhur has opened fire already, however given the attitude of the birds it may have been unavoidable.

Sam isn't going to stick around to become bird food, and quickly turns himself invisible. Once done, he then also begins a performance to bolster the courage of the party.

Magana pushes past Zeoll to take up a frontal position on the stoney area where the town meets the pier.

Aexana tries her best to calm the situation. She calls out to the birds in their tongue but they don't seem interested in what she has to say. All they respond with is "FoodFoodFoodFoodFoodFood!"

Zeoll prefers Aex's approach, but doesn't pin his hopes on it. He readies a spell - just in case.

Spire bolsters his defenses and moves back from the edge of the pier, taking a more central position.

Coer tries to hide a smile as he gets the opportunity to finally test out his new crossbow. Perhaps he'll give the weapon a name someday?

The birds make their move!

Three vultures - in their haste to get to Aexana - make the unwise decision to fly too close to Coer. Each is dispatched quite easily in small explosions of feathers (V5, V8 and V10 are all dead now. Thanks Coer!)

When the birds fly close enough to Zeoll that he feels threatened, he unleashes his spell. (Will Saves vs DC20. V1, V2, V11, V12, and R1 all fail. G2 passes)

Magana and Terser are ready to attack (or defend?) - but the birds just don't seem interested in them.

Two vultures try and peck at Aexana, but her bracers protect her (V7 and V9 hit AC13 & 10. Both miss!)

One vulture tries to attack Sam, but completely misses the invisible bard (v6 hit AC6. Miss!)

The raven swarms move in to the fray.

Raven swarm 2 surrounds Spire in a flurry of feathers, scratching at his face (Spire takes 5pts damage! Spire must make a DC11 Fort save or be Nauseated for 1 round! Spire must make a DC11 Reflex save or be Blinded!)

Raven swarm 4 attacks Aexana despite her calls for peace (Aexana takes 5pts damage! Aexana must make a DC11 Fort save or be Nauseated for 1 round! Aexana must make a DC11 Reflex save or be Blinded!)

Monday September 8th, 2014 10:29:07 AM

OOC to DM: Highlight to display spoiler: {Rob, I had grabbed this header from an old post, but I deduce it is a pre-surgery header, because I now see that both the AC and HP are wrong. I've fixed that now. Anyhow, with mage armor, Spire is AC15, and he has 28 hp max, not 22. Not sure if that affects any damage already done. I'll assume no. ALSO, per email, since I am confused by some of the spells Spire has (not) prepped, I'm just picking some. ... ALSO, just to be a rules lawyer, note that RAW swarms are 10x10 and provoke AoOs when they move into a target's space (but of course, maybe these work different.)}

Saves: Fort 8 fails; Reflex 13 passes.

OOC to DM: Highlight to display spoiler: {Spire fails to note his +2 on Fort Saves from his Rat familiar, so his fort save should be +6 not +4 as I rolled it. However, even with the +2, his save vs nausea would fail at a 10.}

Nauseated by the swarm, Spire can barely keep down his lunch. However, his keen mind remains steadily analytical as he quickly ponders his foe. [OOC: Know Nature check 24] Getting away seems to be the best option, so he leaves the swarm, hustling north past Zeoll toward Magana. [Moves to Q24 as his allowed move action this round.]

Spire figures that standing next to Magana is the safest place to be. There, he stands gasping, trying to settle his tummy.

The battle rages on...

Zeoll charges towards the raven swarm, and slashes at the whirling mass of feather.

Sickened by the birds, Spire just wants to get out of the situation. He spots daylight and makes a move for it.

That daylight just so happens to put him right next to the protective Magana. Let's face it, if you were in trouble and needed a place to hide, there probably isn't a spot safer than next to a taur. Magana observes the birds tactics, and makes a deducation. If she were in their position, wisdom would dictate it wisest to attack the smaller members of the party...

In Aexana's nauseated state she manages to step out of the mess of birds and move towards Coer.

Coer for his part has success with his crossbow, skewering V1 at near point-blank range. He then steps to impose himself near Aex and Sam.

Terser wants to help Sam, but his little legs just can't quite make the distance (this round).

Sam holds his ground and continues his performance.

Jozhur realises that he is in a rather exposed position. He knocks a vulture from the sky and then moves to be adjacent to Coer.

The birds attack...

Raven swarm 2 sees its prey depart, and replaced by a linotaur. They flock at Zeoll (5ft step to Zeoll. Zeoll takes 1pt damage! Zeoll must make a DC11 Fort save or be Nauseated for 1 round! Zeoll must make a DC11 Reflex save or be Blinded!)

Raven swarm 3 continues to attack the invisible Sam! (Sam takes 4pts damage! Sam must make a DC11 Fort save or be Nauseated for 1 round! Sam must make a DC11 Reflex save or be Blinded!)

Raven swarm 4 pursues Aexana (5ft step to Aexana. Aexana takes 4pts damage! Aexana must make a DC11 Fort save or be Nauseated for 1 round! Aexana must make a DC11 Reflex save or be Blinded!)

Vulture 3 flies too close to Coer, and is sent to birdy-heaven for its efforts.

Vulture 6 takes a bite out of where it suspects Sam is hiding, and is rewarded by the taste of flesh (Attack his AC19. Roll for miss chance: 57 = Hit! Sam takes 2pts damage!)

Vultures 7 and 9 fly closer to Aexana and one takes a bite from her also (5ft steps. Attacks hit AC20 and AC9. Aexana takes 3pts damage!

Giant Vulture 2 approaches, and seemingly knows where Sam is hiding. It's large beak pierces his skin and immediately feels like it is burning (Attack hits AC28! Roll for miss chance: 90 = Hit! Roll for disease chance: 93. Sam takes 16pts damage! Sam must make a DC16 Fort Save or contract Blinding Sickness)

Saves: Zeoll makes both easily ... and uses up his Spread the Word bonus on a very easy save, oh well.

Zeoll steps back five feet out of the swarm to 27-28-P-Q. He calls out to Jozhur, "No worrries, my frriend! I have this coverred!"

Inspired by Sam's song, Zeoll braces himself and decides on his best way to attack. Inspired, and truth-be-told, a little overwhelmed by melancholy and memory. Once upon a time Zeoll would have been the one inspiring his friends. And sure, Sam's music is very nice, but Zeoll misses singing songs that he himself would make up in the heat of combat.

Ah well, those swarming ravens aren't going to kill themselves. He'll have to help them along. His claws did not work all that well last round [OOC: rolled 4 damage, only 2 applied]. Well, his enchantment spells won't work against the myriad birds in the swarm. Well, maybe his Peaceball would work ... considering it affects an area ... but why risk wasting one of his best spells when the swarm is probably immune ... Fire or acid would likely be better ...

Zeoll draws a vial of acid from his haversack (move action) and throws it into the swarm (standard action, 5 ft range, and thank goodness they have no reach).

At a total +6 on ranged attacks, Zeoll hits AC15 -- success! The acid splashes everywhere -- even back at him a bit (assuming Zeoll takes 1 hp splash damage since he is within 5 ft). The acid burns the birds for a rolled 2 +2 from the inspired courage = 4 damage. [Maybe 6?? see below].

Zeoll smiles at himself. He's really not a damage-dealing type. Ah well, might as well enjoy trying.

[OOC to DM: Highlight to display spoiler: {Hoping the swarm takes x1.5 damage from splash weapons.}]

OOC: Excellent posting this week guys. Keep it up!

Somehow, despite being invisible and not calling for help, the group just 'know' that Sam needs some TLC.

Jozhur drops his bow and rushes to Sam's aid, swinging his sword as he does so and carving off a piece of Giant Vulture for later.

Zeoll resorts to chemical warfare and lobs some acid at the nearby swarm. The old taurs aim is dead on, and the birds squawk loudly as the liquid burns them.

Feeling much better, Spire casts a spell to make things a bit trickier for the birds. They all glitter and sparkle, and seem much more disorganised (Hero Point to Spire for a clever use of a non-lethal, low-level spell!)

Magana is suitably impressed. One wonders if she is picturing roasting one of the larger birds later by a campfire.

Despite the soft cover provided by Sam, the blinded giant vulture is no match for Terser's blow. It flops to the pier, before slowly dropping from the side and hitting the water with a satisfying 'splash'.

Aex calls upon her wild abilities to change her shape into that of an Air Elemental! (Note that Wildshape is a SU ability - which is a standard action. Also, that changing into a Whirlwindis a SU ability - also a standard action. Can't do both in the same round without expending a Hero Point I think. Also, since you are surrounded you can't 5ft step anywhere!)

Sam continues his performance, despite getting bite and scratch marks all over his invisible body.

Coer swats away the swarm that was attacking Aexana. His fists knock enough birds into the afterlife that the few birds that survive disperse and fly away. He still has enough 'oompf' to deliver a fair whack to the birds surrounding Sam too.

Vultures 4, 6 and 11 - the ones all glittery and blind - have had enough. They all turn tail and head to the east (Using the Withdraw action so as not to provoke AoOs)

Vulture 2 darts too close to Coer, and is clobbered.

Vulture 7 tries pecking at Aexana but misses! (Hit AC11)

Vulture 9 tries its luck at Sam but misses! (Hit AC11)

Giant Vulture 1 swoops in - and despite getting pummeled by Coer - still flies close enough to attack Aexana, but misses! (Hit AC12)

Raven swarm 1 in a blind, glittery state, still knows where its food lies. It circles around and in to attack Aexana! (Jozhur and Aexana may make an AoO against R1. If they take 18pts damage they die. Otherwise... Aexana takes 1pt damage! Aexana must make a DC11 Fort save or be Nauseated for 1 round! Aexana must make a DC11 Reflex save or be Blinded!)

Raven swarm 2 has had a taste for Linotaur, and likes it! (5ft step to Zeoll. Zeoll takes 4pts damage! Zeoll must make a DC11 Fort save or be Nauseated for 1 round! Zeoll must make a DC11 Reflex save or be Blinded!)

Raven swarm 3 is still alive and swarming around Sam! (Sam takes 5pts damage! Sam must make a DC11 Fort save or be Nauseated for 1 round! Sam must make a DC11 Reflex save or be Blinded!)

Jozhur tumbles past the vulture in front of him, however his movement is not as fluid as he would have liked it. The birds snap at his heels, both narrowly missing him (Jozhur acrobatics check 14 did not meet the DC16. 2 AoOs. Hit AC14 and AC12. Both miss!)

Now flanking the bird, Jozhur easily dispatches it.

Terser pummels the ravens surrounding Sam to the point that the few that remain scatter to the air.

Spire casts an Obscuring Mist to provide some sort of cover for the group should they need to retreat. He doesn't have much faith that the birds will be dealt with.

Terser feels something brush past him as Sam the Invisible makes his way past to the 'safety' of the middle of the pier.

Today just isn't Aex's day. Her attacks only strike air, and the swarm makes it too difficult for her to concentrate on her spell.

Coer puts the Giant Vulture out of its misery, before doing the same to the raven swarm around Aex. When it comes to the battle of Minotaur vs Bird, the winner is clearly the minotaur.

Zeoll takes out yet another vial of acid, backsteps and throws. The liquid burns and drips from the swarm of crazed, whirling ravens.

Only two combatants still fly - the vulture by Aexana and the raven swarm by Zeoll.

Both are hurt, and both know when to call it a day. They each withdraw from the battle and take to the skies trying to put as much distance between themselves and the party as possible.

The southern end of the pier is now a bloodied mess of feathers and vulture carcasses. Oh, and the trail of fresh blood that leads to Sam.

Thursday September 11th, 2014 9:09:58 PM

In his hardscrabble youth on liontaur island, letting food go to waste would have been unheard of. "Well, I suppose my years around these weaker races have weakened me too," Zeoll thinks to himself, "since I find myself flinching at the idea of eating carrion-eaters." His mind especially flinches away from the contents of the vultures' stomachs and guts.

He does recover the fallen phylactery, however, and also checks with his spell-casting friends: "Can anyone speak with the dead? Aexana? Sam? Spirre? I bet this fellow has a tale to tell."

The newly-appointed sage continues to look for clues.

Wounds are patched as the birds depart.

Terser releases a wave of healing to anyone nearby, whilst Sam takes advantage of his newly acquired wand. (OOC: Sam - Note that one of your uses was Nat1 (d8+1=2) so warrants a reroll if you haven't already)

Magana keeps an eye on the beach. The birds came quite quickly, and could just be the first wave of something greater. Spire is just as concerned and stays close to his minotaur shield.

Zeoll briefly considers lunch. A vulture sandwich perhaps? Roast raven? He perhaps wisely reconsiders the idea. He suggests that someone in the group - if able to - speak with the dead man.

Aex-Air flies off after one of the vultures. She tries to calm them down, but they are well beyond that point. One screeches back at her "Meat already cold when found. Stop! We go! We go!". It is frantically trying to get away from the air elemental pursuing it.

Jozhur apologises for his actions earlier. Being around so many lovers of nature may mean he has to consider other angles in the future. He sets off towards the nearest building to scout things out.

Up close, the damage to the town doesn't seem terribly bad. There are very few bodies in the street - no women or children, thank Alemi. Some buildings look completely unscathed. Only a few bear small scorch marks. If Jozhur was a betting man he would wager gold that the attack was precise. Not a bombardment from sea or magical aerial assault, or anything like that. More like a band of pirates or scavengers attacked the town. Yes, more like face-to-face fighting. Though if it was that simple, where did everybody go?

The others wait on the pier for Aex and Jozhur to return

DM RobC - It's vewy vewy quiet
Monday September 15th, 2014 6:48:47 AM

Coer tries to identify the buildings by sight. They all look very similar to be honest. Stone walls, thatched roofs. Given the small size of the village, in Coer's experience the people probably lived in the backs of them and conducted any business from the front. Fishing would likely be the main trade good, as no open fields are in sight.

Magana is less subtle. She walks up to the nearest building and opens it with a solid hoof. It's a very simple home. Nothing extravagent to be seen. One cupboard lies open, and can be seen to be bare.

Jozhur is immediately wary that the fate of Gullport may have been the same as in this town. He cannot spy any tell-tale wet footprints though. In his opinion, the wounds on the dead men were caused by weapons, though no weapons can be seen anywhere nearby.

Sam suspects that the men whose bodies sporadically litter the street were likely the best the town could muster in terms of muscle. And that doesn't say much. They hardly look like trained guards or soldiers. Unshaven and unkempt best describes them, but with muscles and calloused hands.

Terser is most interested in the deceased half-elf. Nothing stands out to definitively identify the man, save for the phylactery. No building stands out as being a single, dedicated place of worship for the town. It's possible services were held in the open, but that would be pure speculation.

Zeoll calls out to the ship and tells them to get a move on. From this distance he could swear that Tommy makes an unflattering gesture towards him. It does take some time after all for a ship to dock and then depart again. The Lionfish is picking up pace however as it departs the town.

Aex has a good view from above. With the vultures no longer giving her concern she can circle the town in relative comfort. She spies a few bodies on the ground, each being pecked at by a raven or two. The beach to the south west though make warrant further investigation. From on high it looks like there is a large bluish patch of 'something' smack in the middle of the sand. A crop of sand loving, blue mushrooms perhaps?

Auran only: "Friends, look over there on the beach... something strange and blue seems to cover a patch of sand... be cautious!!"

And for those not understanding Auran she points towards the South-West beach. She holds and elemental hand to her elemental eyes, and then points to the beach... and she repeats this signal...
