The Scourge Dies -- BUT WAIT!! (DM Cayzle)  d6=1 ; d20+2=20 ;
Thursday September 11th, 2014 5:52:40 PM

The party cheers Grell's return from the very brink of death!

Rag looks at the fallen dragon. Yes, it is surely true, as Scales says, that its hide is valuable.

Zero and Yeshua both like the idea of dragon hide armor. Best guess is that the hide of this monster could be used to make masterwork half-plate armor and a shield for a medium character.

Rag thinks it is almost as much a victim as Grell ...

HOWEVER, Emrys urges the group to pause before butchery! He wants to speak with the monster ... and on closer examination, he notes that it is at -6 hp, dying but stable, and of course unconscious -- BUT NOT DEAD YET!

Now what?

While the Scourge is unconscious Rag casts his one and only spell... Mark of Justice... The spell takes 10 minutes to complete so the monk just hopes he can keep the butchers away from the poor creature long enough...

"You shall no longer fullfill Draco's evil will... you shall no longer hurt these people or their boats at sea... should you do so you will never breath fumes again..."

Luckily, we can have a thorough discussion in 10 minutes...

"EMRYS! We need an arcane evaluation, post haste. What is this collar and what was it doing to the dragon? Because if it did not completely enslave its will, I am not allowing the creature to recover."

Sir Royston will examine it himself as well. Knowledge (arcana) 24

Grell, 27/86
Thursday September 11th, 2014 7:24:27 PM

Washing the blood off his armor and relishing on the sting of the salt on his wounds, Grell watches Emrys cautiously. He hopes that the witch isn't going to try and bring the dragon back to life, because quite frankly he doesn't think he can take another round with it. Still, he holds his tongue, though he does head away from the beach head.

Grabbing Lowell in a shoulder hug, Grell looks over at his brother's hand crossbow. "You know, we should probably look at tightening the string on this...you haven't had a whole lot of luck recent..." Finding a glob of tar on the carrier, Grell playfully teases Lowell. "Well there's your problem right there! You do know you have to clean your equipment every once an a while, don't you?!" Grell fishes around his backpack and pulls out a cleaning rag and then proceeds to "instruct" Lowell on how to service his crossbow.

"Do not worry, Grell. I had no compulsion to raise the dragon from the dead. I was suggesting that I get a chance to speak with it's corpse. All living things leave an echo of their spirit behind when they pass. The dead don't necessarily keep their secrets." On second glance though, Emrys takes a step back from the beast. "Uhh, the Scourge is still very much alive ... and stable I may add!"

"Yes, Royston. I've already requested that the collar be removed ... I guess no one heard me. By its location and design, a collar is traditionally used for restraint and control over a creature. By that same logic and the laws of practical magic, the form signifies the function. The collar could be an implement of domination, not just enhancement. After all, it is illogical for a turtle to wear a collar. It would be quite uncomfortable for its retractable neck. Also, look at the scarring along its back. His shell was forcefully removed. Dragons are very proud and vain creatures, no dragon would willingly do this to itself. It would be like cutting off my own beautiful locks ... the idea is absurd!"

Having finished his short, yet highly informative lecture, Emrys moves in close to the Scourge's neck and places his hands on the collar. He first casts Detect Magic, but again the spell fizzles (Leyline: 16). Emrys sighs, "This has been happening far too frequently lately ... I suspect it's from all the necromancy." He tries again and the cantrip finally fires off correctly (Leyline: 23). He examines the auras and determines the strengths and identities of each. He then casts a second divination (leyline: 94 free cast, woot! Casting Identify.) to give him a better, more decisive prognosis.

(Knowledge [Arcana]: 21. Spellcraft: 35, to identify the collar.)

"You should not have done that. You do not make decisions for everyone. Definitely not for me."

Zero tossed his flask down angrily and moved away. Seconds later he came back for his flask, took a slug of it, and turned towards Royston again and raised a grubby finger.

"You do not make decisions for me, Paladin" he spat. "If it's the will of the group, so be it, but no one man or woman, holy warrior or not, chooses for me."

Sir Royston does not look pleased. "You mush-brained fool. This is not some 'poor creature'. This is a rampaging monster, who nearly killed one of us and plainly stated its intention to destroy the town. It is farcical to call my actions evil. Your spell would have prevented the use of its breath weapon, but it still has claws, and teeth, and spells at its command. Its master could be close by, observing us even now, and ready to remove the curse at a moment's notice, or heal it of its wounds. What then!? The brute act of killing the defenseless creature unsettles him, too.
Yes, the turtle dragon is a dangerous wild beast but with this act Royston seems to be the same.
Maybe his thoughts about paladins were too naive, too pure or Sir Royston was leaving the righteous path.

"Bah!" he spat as he threw the empty flask into the water. It landed about twenty feet out, but after a few minutes the waves brought it back to him, so he grabbed it with his toes and put it away. "It's as if you want me to drink, Mother Wold" he mumbled.

A short while later he returned to the others. His mood was still sour, but his anger had subsided. " Eat some of these", he offered as he held out a hand full of wild berries. "They'll nourish you and heal you up a bit also."

Lastly, he walked over to the dragon and whispered a silent prayer. Maybe the magnificent creature deserved to die, but that didn't change the fact the it was magnificent. Dragons were special. They were the Gods most splendid creation, and they deserved respect.

In the back of his mind, Zero also thought of the creatures scales and the splendid armour they would make. It was a thought that made him feel dirty, but he thought it nonetheless. "Forgive me Mother".

Emrys looked on stunned and shocked at the brutality of Royston. He is also angered by the fact that his newcomer had taken upon himself to decide the fate. "Are you daft? Death is never a permanent solution, especially with a foe as powerful and clever as Draco!"

Emrys begins to pace back and forth and then his index finger is raised to emphasize a point. "The attack on this town was a fool's errand for a dragon. The magical wards that prevent the beast from coming to shore are still in place. A barrier the Scourge was never going to pass ... and Draco KNOWS this! However, what do we have now! We no longer have a dragon ... lo and behold, we have a mountainous pile of flesh! The possibilities are endless for a powerful magic user like Draco. If we drag the carcass to shore, past the barriers, what keeps the dragon from being resurrected? Or better yet, why not animate the beast as an undead and bypass the magical wards altogether! Did it ever cross your mind that the Scourge was sent here to die? This is the Emerald Horse all over again!"

He paces a few more steps and continues, "There is no way around it now. The body needs to be destroyed! Give me 10 minutes to try and gain some information from the corpse. During which I suggest you all sharpen your axes and cleavers."

Emrys will cast a necromancy in order to speak with the dead. He begins to chant the ritual.

Evaris squints at the distant figure, but can make out nothing at this distance.

"We may need to go out and meet him," he says, and casts Water Walk on anyone who wants it (casting twice if necessary).

Faust accepts the waterwalk as he only prepare fly once for the day.

"I do wonder, was the dragon here out of its own free will or it only believed to be here out of its own free will? There are spells that could easily persuade any intelligent being into biding to your musings, especially if they're already in friendly terms with you."

"Also, mr. Scalesworth, mr. Myrridanmyl speaks the truth, one can only be so cautious when dealing with spellcasters, we are a crafty bunch and, frankly, getting a creature under your control dead and reborn in necromancy is such a simple yet ingenious plan I'm insulted for not coming to the possibility myself, ergo, please refrain from taking hard to reverse decisions in the future without proper consideration."

Yeshua (Ken) AC 26 Truman AC 26 Joint hp pool 91/96  d20+18=30 ;

Yeshua and Truman, who are on active surveillance after eating a healthy meal of dragon turtle (Perc = Yeshua 30), see the figure and agree with the assessment of their friends...

They move to somewhere that could provide cover, and wait to see how things go... Diplomacy is not their role, but if this turns into a fight, then they'll step in...

(OOC - I still need to update Yeshua/Truman to take into acct the new xp and will do it this weekend. Cayzle, I sent you an email about him and did you have a chance to review it yet? Thx)

Noticing his brother take out his sword, Lowell takes out his crossbow, hoping that he wont need to use it with all the bad luck he had been having so far.

Sorry for a quick DM Post ...

The figure is now three rounds away by flight. Any last actions before he arrives?

Also, please state your location on this map. Note that the dragon corpse is at AG-AH-12-13.

OOC how much time has passed since we cast our buff spells? I assume the long duration stuff is active? If not I will recast bark skin, and have Mage armor cast on me with my wand.

Zero's stood next to the fallen dragon as his body began to twist and conform into a new form. His body turned green, more attractive and smaller. Around his body a massive flower bloomed, and large flowering vines appeared that lifted Zero into the air. It was an odd sight seeing a smaller Zero sitting in the depths of an enormous, sweet smelling flower.

Zero the Alarune took up position on the beach 20' to the left of the fallen dragon.

Emrys ac13, hp29/37 elixir of insight, inspire courage, spectral hand, see invisibility
Thursday September 18th, 2014 9:59:02 PM

(what is the duration of the elixir of insight?)

Emrys does his best to stand with confidence, even though he is entertaining the thought of turning invisible (standing in AD-13). However with Ariach and Evaris by his side, he is comforted with the fact, that if Draco attacks, he wont be dying alone (just joking :).

Turning to Evaris, he answers, "No, I speak Draconic just fine. Thanks anyway." His mind begins to race and he composes a diplomatic plan. Somehow convince Draco that this plan is futile and will only lead to more dead dragons. First though, he is interested to see if Draco is dragon enough to be repelled by the magical barrier.
