DM Jeff -A new home?
Wednesday September 3rd, 2014 10:24:25 AM

Cameron listened to Gerox's explanation and nodded in understanding. "Thank you for the warning Gerox. The world has certainly become a dangerous place. Without heroes here I suspect we will be easy pickings for the riffraff. It will only be a matter of time before one or more of the guilds will be extorting us. The powerful pray upon the weak, and we are the weak. I believe we have to choose a side, and I'd like to put my money on you. It was you that saved us after all. Moreover, I want to help you any way I can. If this city is to remain our home than we must defend it, yes? And so, if you go down, well... we would be honoured to go down with you."

His explanation seemed genuine.

...

A short while later you find yourselves in a large apartment. The entire apartment is yours, and includes a large common area and a private room for each of you. What it lacks in furnishings it makes up for in comfortable beds and a fully stocked pantry. You will sleep well this night.

...

Early in the morning there is a knocking on your door. You open it to discover a panting boy with a note in his hand. The boy passes you the note and turns to leave.

The note is from Ceri. She requests your presence as soon as possible. The city, it seems, needs your help.

Gerox is raiding the pantry when he hears the knocking and answers the door. He passes the boy a copper as a tip before he turns and offers his thanks. He reads the note and wonders what is happening now but it seems like their attention was needed quickly so he starts pounding on doors to wake the others who haven't risen from slumber yet.

(b) Wake up! Get up! Rum needs saving again! You have had plenty off rest! Get your gear, get suited up and we need to move! (/b)

When the others assemble outside in the sitting area, they will find a cheerful Gerox who is waving the note. "We have been summoned by Ceri. It looks like our special abilities are needed again. It says as soon as possible so we need to move."

Brom is roused by the sounds of Gerox pounding at his door. "Go away! shouts the barbarian at the disturber of his slumber. Persistence forces Brom to get up and see what the racket is all about. "Huh, note from who?" The half-asleep man says. "Can't be that urgent if she didn't come herself. It could've waited until noon." He says going back into his room. A long while later, he comes out dressed. He looks down at the energetic gnome and says. "Your buyin' lunch."

Barratore is up fairly early, not crack of dawn early, but certainly well before the likes of Brom. He is exiting his room when the door to the apartment is accosted. Gerox is heading to answer and so he is heading to the pantry. A loaf of bread and basket of fruit in hand, Barratore exits and sits with Gerox to inquire on the note. Barratore can't help but chuckle a bit as Gerox leaps to action. He didn't bring any of his gear and so it takes very little time for the minotaur to be ready. That extra time, brings him the ability to casually lounge about and eat as he waits on the others.

When the last of the group is finally set, Barratore grabs a side of salted pork to gnaw on and heads off to meet with Ceri

OOC: Sorry about the delay today. Crazy crazy day.

"So it seems we need your help again" Ceri said as soon as you opened the door to her office. "Thank you for coming so quickly."

Ceri looked exhausted and more flustered than usual. The rings under her eyes were a clear sign that she had been working long hours. The pile of papers on her desk an obvious indication that she was very busy. She cut right to the chase.

"We've got a problem in the sewers. Seems we have a few sewer waste eating oozes that aren't content with just eating sewer waste no more. They've injured a few people and actually killed two. We need them lured back deeper into the sewers so they can continue their sewer waste eating ways... an important function to keep our city clean. Failing that, you can send them to the ooze afterlife, though this wouldn't be the preference of the Minister of Water and Sanitation. But I never liked that guy much anyway."

OOC- Feel free to make a knowledge arcana check.

"Oh and when you're done having "oozles" of fun, maybe you can look into a few children that have gone missing. We're pretty sure that they've stowed away on ships, but we should make sure. I've got some other groups looking into it, but it's always good to have a back up plan."

"Oozes?" Edson asks. " Isn't there a stable boy somewhere who can handle that? I mean Dragons, Demons, Devils and Undead, that is our thing. This seems like using a magical sword to cut some cheese. I mean, we'll do it. But I feel like we aren't being heroes by sending overkill in there." He thinks for a moment before continuing. "Well one of us could always go in and handle it, while the others hang out at the inn."

Gerox speaks up, "I suspect that these oozes might be more dangerous than you are thinking. Yes they are slow but some can dissolve just about anything. How we are going to get one back without killing it will be a challenge. Especially if it is large and something that has been consuming the garbage of a city isn't going to be small.

The missing children are also a concern. Yes the lure of the sea is strong but slavery and impressment is also a possibility. Or some predator could be eating them. Predators tend to pick on the small and weak."

DM Jeff - Oozles of Fun

Gerox recalled that the oozes were actually an important part of the sewage system, as they were used to breakdown the sludge and other pleasantries that made its way into the sewers. Ooze was very efficient at this job, though it could also be dangerous if not controlled.

The most prevalent type of ooze was called Living Burning Hands, which was essentially a barrel-sized ball of rolling fire that looked very much like a Flaming Sphere. These little joys would churn and lurch and quickly eat up anything in its path. And it ate indiscriminately.

Gerox also recalled rumors of larger and more dangerous oozes being seen in the sewers, but those rumors were unconfirmed.

...

Ceri's behavior made it fairly obvious that she had other business to attend to, but she took a few more minutes to answer your questions. (OOC- feel free to back to and I'll answer them).

She then summoned the same runner that visited you earlier in the morning.

"Klein, I'd like you to take these heroes to the south sewer gate. Take this key, unlock the gate, and wait for them until their work is complete. I will expect a full report once they return to the surface."

"Yes Milady" Klein responded with a bow. "Please, follow me."

Barratore returns a short while later, wearing Banded mail and carrying another set of armor and a blade. Heading to his bunk, he drops off the Chain Shirt and stows it with his magical weapon and full plate. He keeps the newly purchased mundane bastard sword, grabs his bow, quiver and pack and moves out to meet the rest of the group.

You turn the corner and come upon a large pool of sewer water. On the far side of the pool is an open grate. To the left of the grate you see a woman that has been surrounded by creatures that look something like a Flaming Sphere. There are eight of these strange creatures.

You move to intercept the creatures before they can harm the woman, but suddenly a man steps in front of you. The man is well dressed, and accompanied by two guards.

"Stop them, but do not hurt them!" he said in obvious distress. "The city needs them."

As you stand outside in what could be best described as a neglected waterway designed to direct storm runoff into the sewer you see before your eyes can't be possible, though unless your mind has failed you or you should not have had that last mug of Dwarven ale it must be real. As tall as a man and as round as the stoutest dwarf a roiling, crackling balls of thick reddish/orange ooze drag themselves along the ground towards you and the trapped girl leaving a trail of burnt waste in its wake. Stretching forth what can only be described as a gelatinous mockery of a human hand, flames and sparks dancing along its surface as the things dig their lazing fingers into the foul sludge and pull the bulk of their body forward in a lurching, inch-worm fashion. You watch as one of the same glowing hands brushes against a clump of foul waste instantly igniting it and sending ash and flaming debris about. There is no way this is a common ooze or flaming sphere.

Knowledge Arcana 11 Highlight to display spoiler: {This is not a normal ooze, this is a living spell. Living spells are examples of what happens when raw magic is allowed to bleed over entire terrains, condensing and collecting into physical manifestations that mimic the spells that were over and over in their presence. Barratore and Brom ignore the man whose soiled clothing make him easily recognizable as a sanitation worker followed by two gauds whose only redeeming feature is that they carry swords, though you would be willing to bet money that neither has actually used one in combat...the illusion of safety so loved by politicians. As they charge forward the smell of rancid water coming from the sewer grows with every step and you can see that someone has destroyed the gate leading inside. Barratore stops knee deep in the putrid sludge as Brom moves to kick one of the oozes back towards the gate (results of this attempt to follow pending others actions).

Peza chides the man for not helping, but she soon realizes that any attempt to help on their part would result in three more victims to rescue. Turning away from them she too moves towards the water and tries to draw the attention of the things before her.

Taking advantage of any the element of surprise, the other's distraction and realizing the longer he waits the closer the things will get to the young lass, Gerox teleports next to the panicked girl. "I am here to get you to safety. Hold my hand." quickly she grabs ahold, acting on instinct rather than taking the time to think whether she should trust the small man or not.

As Gerox warns the others of the danger these living manifestations represent the burning ooze like forms move towards the group. Brom has just enough time to pull back his kick thanks the gnome's warning.

Edson doesn't wait for further instructions and unleashes an arrow at one of the oozes causing it to leave a trail of flaming fluids behind it as it moves.

Brom is just about is just about to ask for more detail when the form closets him moves forward and grabs him. Pain shoots up his leg as the flesh is seared and his pants catch fire moving up towards his beg. (A character can extinguish burning items as a full-round action. If you do not put out the flames you will be considered on fire.) (take 11 dmg)

On the edge of the water Barratore finds himself being surrounded by three of the living spells, none of which are able to break through his defenses. The large taur unleashes upon the first of the spells, his blade and arm coming away red hot and flaming as if he stuck his hand into a magical fire. (A character can extinguish burning items as a full-round action. If you do not put out the flames you will be considered on fire.) (take 10 dmg. I only counted the first of your AoOs. If you want them all to hit one of the flames will be dead, but you will take more dmg.)

As the flames erupt Peza feels somewhat helpless and ponders how to fight these creatures and wondering if the gate was sabotaged. "We need water to fight these things ... at least i think ....they burn stuff ... if we can get them into the water " The ranger looks about checking the area .... anything that can act as a shield ... something to push the escaped creatures either back into the sewer or into the water .... or lead them to either. Although she cannot find anything in the area not burned to ash by the living spells a thought enters her mind, as if whispered by something barely audible or just on the other side of her consciousness...follow the water... (I made a perception check for you rather than waiting another day to have you roll)

Gerox watches as one of the spells continues moving closer to the girl and lunges forward. He squeezes the girls hand and dimension doors back to the group, barely avoiding the creatures attack."Your safe now lass. Go with them and stay out of the way. It might get dangerous here and I don't want to see you hurt." Calling out to the others he explains what living spells are and advising you avoid close range tactics.

ooc: I will update the map this evening.

Gerox will cast a haste spell on the group.

"Maybe we will be quick enough to get out of there way." he mutters

Peza ponders the mysterious words, having long since learned to heed her intuition. Slowly she circles the pool of foul water around towards the wall, doing her best not to draw the attention of the burning hands. As she stares at the burned waste and charred rat corpses floating in the pool and engulfed by the oozes she asks Gerox if he can dispel the creatures.

Not having prepared that spell Gerox instead draws from his acane knowledge a spell to quicken the group and help them to keep clear of the living spell's reach.

Edson quickly unleashes another of his at the flaming ooze sending a splatter of napalm across the ground as it pierces its side. Gerrox, as soon as your done playing kissy face, we need some boom from you. Gerox mutters, as his current aid goes unappriciated, Sure he wants boom. Most of my boom is fire related which might be problematic here.

Barratore smells the flames and quickleextinguishes himself and takes a step back. "Can't hold them here for much longer. If you're going to do something, do it faster." he calls back to Peza and Gerox

The ooze closest to the group move forward as the others move to the edge of the water line. The large blobs of flaming ooze reaching their fiery hands out. Two of them wrap their searing fingers around Barratore's leg causing the foul stench of burnt hair to fill the air as he once again finds the flames crawling up his large frame. (Take 22 dmg. A character can extinguish burning items / body as a full-round action. If you do not put out the flames you will be considered on fire.)

Close by Brom stand motionless as the flaes envelop him and another round of attacks sears his flesh, his pants blackened as the flames travel up to his shirt.

Edson takes a 5' step backwards to move away from the livingflame. His arrow fires again, once again finding its mark. The thing visibly slows. A second later Peza loads her crossbow, snapping a bolt into place firing at the nearest fiery ooze. A high pitched squeal pierces the air as the ooze is extinguished and dissipates into the water. Not hesitating Peza launches a second bold at the other injured living burning hand spell. It to flickers and dissolves into the stagnant water.

Brom waits for an idea from the smart people, allowing his clothes to begin to burn in the process.

Maybe I can lead them back into the sewers. He thinks as he moves to the water. "I'm gonna see if they follow me back." Despite lacking any semblance of eyes the oozes follow. There is a loud sizzle as the water puts out his pants, but his shirt still burns...if only the old lady from the bath could see him now, covered in soot and waste.

Barratore easily dodges the extending fingers of the remaining ooze before him, but as Brom tries to lure the living spells back towards the gate the creatures slowly surround him, wrapping their burning hands around his arms. (Brom is hit twice for 23dmg and takes 3 dmg for being on fire for a total of 26 dmg)

Barratore takes 4 dmg for still being on fire.

Barratore decides it is open season on the burning hand spells and lashes out at the remaining one with his sword. Between that and Edson's bolt the remaining spell attacking his is quickly extinguished.

Gerox sends bolts of energy at Brom's attacker and calls out, "Just bash them. I am sure they are immune to fire but you should be able to kill them if we need to. The council is just going to have to figure out something else." Judging by the creature's slow pace he is sure there must be more in the sewers to clean up after a population the size of Rum.

"thats it Brom .... lead them to the sewer grate ..... " Peza urges as she slides her buckler into position and rush the fiery ooze hoping to knock it in shield rush and knock it back into the sewers. Although she has difficulty finding her footing and getting a solid hit on the ooze she finds their lack of mobility and poor reflexes easy to evade and she is able to push the ooze back 5ft despite the lack luster attack. The one exception is that if you are charging (a full round action) you can use it as your 1 attack included in the bull rush. Also, I want to make sure you realized that everyone leveled up on Friday, so update your sheets accordingly.

Curious about the living spells ... the fiery gnome inspects the sewer enetrance ... wondering about how they escaped ... absorbing the details of the broken bars and entrance .....

Brom helps out with the repair of the grate. He then inquores into the groups next move. We checking into the disappearences?" says the barbarian. " I'm off to get some healing, first. Anyone else wanna come?
ooc: I am not sure, but I believe the cheapest route is to pay a cleric to cast it for you. Cost is Caster level × spell level × 10 gp3 or 1x1x10=10gp for 1d8+1hp)

Barratore spits to clear the taste out of his mouth. "So is the magic compulsion new is the question. If its always been there, and worked so well to pull them back, my question is what had them wander off in the first place?" After looking around he comes to two conclusions. That the pool outside the grate would allow the burning hands to exit the tunnel despite the compulsion, possible allowing them to escape the compulsion's range is the thing controlling them keeps moving, and the something other than the living spells you encountered broke the grate. The bars were clearly damaged by tools and brute force.

Peza - Smiling as the fighting ends .... with nobody hurt to much .... turns to the little girl .... " everything is ok now .... those things are back where they belong ... those nice men " as she points to the mason and blacksmith " are making sure it doesnt happen again .... now run home " Watching the two workers repair the sewer grate ... " She agrees with Barratore's acessment of the situation and tips the duo 5 goldpieces each

Gerox inspects the sewer entrance, curious about the living spells and wondering about how they escaped ... absorbing every detail.

The men quickly get the grate patched up and continue to work on making the bars more secure. Thank you!!! the men exclaim upon receiving their tips and redoubling their efforts. As they double the thickness of the brickwork securing the bars Barratore and Brom decide to seek out some healing before risking another encounter.

While the others discuss what to do next the young girl looks about sheepishly, clearly not sure is she is supposed to wait around for something or leave...Erm, thanks for the help.... She pauses for a brief second before turning around. Bye! She pauses for just a second, but it is clear that she will leave if not stopped.

Barratore pays for 6 healing spells. Before leaving he shares his opinion with the others. They could work on the solution and next moves while he was gone. "The Burning Hands are compelled to follow the water. Someone added water here and then broke the grating." Barratore looks at the girl, standing there. "Maybe the little one saw something?"

Barratore trots off to a temple to get that healing and returns double time to get back to the sewer grate

Arriving back to the others, Brom says "What's the plan now? Something 'bout missing people? What'a we know 'bout that?"

The young girl grins sheepishly as Peza approaches. Although shy, she does not appear as intimidated by her as she does the larger men in the party. Yes. I am fine. I was walking down here lost in my thoughts when I suddenly saw those things. All I could think was Cinnaminsen, you fool!... The girl suddenly looks up embarrassed glancing at everyone who might have been listening...Err, I should probably get going...

As the girls talk Barratore looks at the water and comes to the conclusion that it wasn't spilled. It was most likely overrun from the last rain that had mixed with the sewer water, and under normal circumstances the living spells could not get through the gate.

Brom kneels down before the child. "Who's this friend of yurs?" He says. "Did yur friend damage the grate? Where'd he go?" He waits for an answer to his question.

"Don't git yur hopes up too soon, Edson. I think we're still going in somewhere."

Barratore gives Peza and the girl some room. Brom was already there and another large person smelling of sewage, burnt flesh and hair would probably not help. So the minotaur hangs back and strikes up with Edson and Gerox. "Not looking to celebrate until I have reason to. There has to be more to this than just that. Someone broke the gate to let them out or to get in. Either way, answers are in there" he points to the now repaired grate.

The young girl blushes slightly. I was chastising myself for being so careless. Seeming to collect herself she says, I was looking for junk that might have washed here in the rain to try and sell for food...I found a copper piece on the ground and this monster attacked me.
