(Sorry for late post)

The Vegepygmie chieftan nods and draws a picture in the blue goop. He makes the rough circle, then makes a big dot in the center, a dot in the center, and a dot slightly to the side of it.

He pokes the off-center dot and makes a cutting gesture, then wildly springs up and jumps from one place to the next. He then takes a gnoll idol piece and sticks it in the center dot. He makes a sweeping motion with his hand around the rest of the circle but shrugs helplessly.

When Prudence inquires about the blue stuff, she he looks at William confused.

Nikolai wonders about the mud, which William could probably explain. Vegepygmie Cheiftans are solely based on a mutation in their spawning, which is that their hands rapidly culture and grow russet mold, a necessity for their species to procreate. By caking his hands in mud, he is seemingly trying to reduce your exposure to the stuff.

Tinker edges in closer. A map? A puzzle! And the dwarf has learned that puzzles are just like locks; a challenge! "I think the off-center dot is a gnoll camp. That would be the cutting gesture. And it may even be the gnoll camp that created the gnoll kewpee dolls that control access to the Blood Cypress."

Tinker isn't sure if he is correct, but looks to the others to get their interpretations.

William smiles and tries to show his thanks in both gestures and grunts in Undercommon... He explains what he's noticed about the fungus to the others, not wanting to get too close or pick up many of the spores by exposure...

"Yes, I think you're right... Though I'm not sure what he meant by his shrugging expression... Could it be that he doesn't know more than that about the area?"

He reviews what the map showed and asks his friends, "How does this sound to you?"
1. The Big Dot in the center is unknown. Could that be us?
2. The small dot in the center is the main gnoll encampment
3. The off-center dot is a small gnoll camp?

Based upon what his companions say, he'll try to communicate his questions and tentative conclusions to the plant men in order to clarify what he thinks they meant...

"Gurpit!"

Of all the queries, the only one he seems to acknowledge is the guess that he was representing the blood teleportation plant with the smallest dot and that the largest dog is a Gnoll camp, leaving you to figure that if you had headed west instead of north, you might have already encountered some of the Gnolls in this area.

The vegepygmie sighs and falls flat on his back, and within moments is snoring away. His guards continue their vigilance, leaving you with the rare option to catch up sleep.

Take it or leave it, in the morning they gather and points south, then at the gnoll idols scattered on the ground. He points north, then points at the various humans in the group.

After much pantomiming, the impression is made that nothing can be done about the strange affliction the minotaurs have come down with, and they are not cured. His group gathers and starts south, waiting for you to follow.

Purdence's magical fire scorches the Centaurs flesh, leaving parts smoldering a back. No fungus re-appears!

Just as Carver pumps his fist to celebreate, he notices the very first inkling of the small white spores white-heading on his blackened skin. He is still not free of his affliction.

After a day of travel, you recognize where your trail cuts back to the Sout East. The Vegepygmies ignore this trail and continue straight south. Another non-eventful night passes and in the morning the Vegepygmies seem agitated and more cautious in their movements.

The trail continues following the Gnollish Fetishes which appear to lead deeper and deeper into the swamps. The Vegepygmies eventually stray off the main path, pointing with much grunting over a set of gnoll tracks, some coming and some going down the path which slowly rises above sea level, finally dragging you above water level in most areas.

The Chieftan points at an easily climbable tree and pantomimes south. A quick and effortless climb revealst a wide mouthed cave watched over by four Gnolls. What do you do?

Can the mold the pygmies use to create more of their kind grow in dead bodies?
Do they know how many gnolls are here? Many? Few?
Are the gnoll leaders here?

Depending on the answers, Cameron suggests that the non stealthy among them retreat from the area and let the scouts hold up and observe the cave for some time, probably a couple of days. Once the patterns have been learned then deeper recon can be undertaken.
If this is not the main camp and only has a few gnolls he suggests killing them off so as not to run into them when it would be bad.

Cameron can see the weight of command on Nikolai. He needs this job done, and done well, and he cares that two of his troopers, his friends, may be rotting away before his eyes. Cameron too needs this to go well. Knight Captain Palance was not shy when she told him any further failure would be very bad for him. He looks at his comrades, and then the mission. He swallows and then voices a plan. It isn't perfect, but it might just work.
" Sir, I volunteer to stay behind and observe the gnolls. If Tinker and William stay with me, we can watch the cave for a couple of days and get acclimated to the comings and goings of the gnolls, as well as pick up some of their scent, from being in the environment. We can then sneak into the cave, if needed and spy on the gnoll leaders. William isn't as stealthy as Tinker and I, but I think with his spells and Tinker and my help we can keep him concealed. On top of that, he knows their language. He will be a huge asset is gathering information."
" In the mean time you take the others back through the portal, get help for the centaurs, and come back to get us.By then we will either know what we need to know, or be captured and eaten. I tend to think it will be the former, not the latter. If it all goes wrong I still have the necklace of Fireballs and well, being captured by those brutes again frightens me deeper than you can know. I'll kill them all if I have to."
"Look, I need a win after that thing with the caravan. You need a win to cement their trust in you. Only a couple of us can hide worth a darn, and only one of us knows their tongue. They may be against splitting your force, but frankly short of a wish we aren't getting the less stealthy members of this force in there to gather intel. They will need to stay behind. The fewer you risk, the fewer you can lose. Its a gamble, but I'm a gambler. I like these odds:

We are not going to accomplish all this by sitting out here and watching, nor are we going to succeed if we all venture in. So we will need to split up, but not by sending anyone back just yet."

He looks his friends over before continuing. "I'm just as concerned about this fungus stuff that won't go away. On the other hand, who wants to go back now and leave your friends to fight the gnolls alone? Would you rather die fighting gnolls or face Constance? But I can't force anyone to stay."

He pauses a moment before outlying a plan.

"Here's what I'm thinking. First we do need a base camp. Pru and William, stay with Cameron and watch. Take a tally of how many exit and enter the cave and what they are wearing. Try to see differences, like height, weight, color, and so forth to distinguish individuals. Pay attention to their deference to each other to determine ranking.

Meanwhile the rest of us will look for a dry place to set up our base camp. Once that's done, we can take shifts watching. We do this for at least two days. Depending on what we find out, we can determine the need to actually sneak into their lair. We'll discuss who goes in at that time.

By the way, those vegie-people were covering themselves with mud to keep any of them from contaminating us. Try caking the spore areas with mud and see what happens. You never know."

Being the Thumb, approval of the plan is not technically necessary, but desired. Taking charge like this is part of leadership and confidence building. They must try the bare minimum before even contemplating going back, no matter what.

" Begging your pardon sir, and I know it isn't their fault, but the centaurs walking around here, looking for a campsite, swapping out on monitoring the gnolls, even standing mostly still is similar to putting every pot you have on the outside of a chuck wagon and driving it over rough terrain. They aren't made for stealth. Ask them, they'll tell you. "
" Beside that they are sick and need help we can't give them. The best place for anyone not stealthy is not here. Unless you want to fight the gnolls? If that's what we are planning, then we should just prepare for that."
"Sir."

Cameron falls silent. If this is going to be how they do this, he will need to decide whether to remain hidden or try to help when the gnolls descend on them. Not a choice he wants to have to make.

Tuesday September 16th, 2014 9:08:17 PM

The fungus on Carver and Linden is raising a lot of concern, but so far short of a mild itch and unsightly appearance, it has had little affect on the stalwart Centaurs.

A few plans are tossed around, but the Fist seems divided.

In the mean-time, Linden seems to have made a small breakthrough in the spores afflicting himself and Carver. It seems to grow rampantly in this environment, but other than slight accumulative foggy-headedness and irritation to the skin it does little else at the moment. If it really took hold, it could prove troublesome over time.

He considers all the known anti-fungals he's learned about, and comes to the conclusion that normal healing and magical healing should have removed the affliction days ago. That it isn't going away is a testament to how rapidly it grows in this biome.

(For every fort save failed, checked daily suffer -1 to all saves and skill checks. Penalties are cumulative. So far, neither has failed a fort save.)

The current path ahead seems to favor either splitting up into groups or making a small camp and trying to maintain a positive grasp on the situation and attempting to learn what they can how they can.

Nikolai has given an order. Will his Fist obey?

Nikolai clasps his hands behind his back as Cameron expresses his concerns of the plan. Once the halfling is done speaking, he tries to look understanding and nods his agreement on the halfling's words.

"Your stealth assessment is correct. When I said we would watch in shifts, I didn't mean we would forgo common sense. The only ones we'll set up to watch are those good at hiding and sneaking. If we had a Silence spell, that would be even better.

We will keep a watch on the fungi and send the two back if things take a turn to the worse. If I send them back, they go alone to make the best time, anyone else with them will only slow them down. Our job is here. I do have the scroll to communicate with Constance but it is a one-shot deal. I can ask about how to deal with the fungi but I want something significant to report before I do that.

Either way, we need a base camp. Cameron, Pru, and William keep watch. The rest of us will find a defensible, maybe, but dry place to make camp."

If there are better suggestions Nikolai will listen, but they all know their orders and the Thump expects his Fist to follow them as best they can. If he were to send the two back now, they could go to the town and hope for some insight and healing there. But it would take three days at best for a one way trip there and the same back, a week gone perhaps.

"Linden and Carver, I have to leave it up to you two to decide upon your health. I will support whatever decision you make. I'm not going to force either of you to stay here if you feel that fungus is getting the better of you. Once we've found a good campsite, tell me what you would like to do."

If nothing else comes up, the rest go looking for a campsite to establish their headquarters.

"In regards to orders, I follow Nikolai.
I'll do what I can to keep Carver and myself well while on mission. We shouldn't split up and the group. Fact is, if we leave, and then Carver or I get sicker enroute to where ever, neither of us can carry the other easily, even when healthy. Working as a group, the Fist finds a suitable place for camping. It isn't very difficult to find actually, because the ground here is higher in elevation than the northern bog they had been traversing through.

Setting up a blind near the Gnolls is simple as well. A few Gnolls come and go but mostly they are obviously patrols, and none of them seem to come your direction. Most of them are going up or down the southern trail, and a few to the west.

The night passes easily, and the Gnolls don't do much traveling in the dark.

It's all very drab and boring on your second day of observation until the Pygmies start packing up and prepare to move out. When questioned, they point north and answer "Jub jub", before forming a small little column and getting ready to move off. The Chieftan takes a moment to wave goodbye to each of you before taking a place at the head of the group.

- Linden and Carver, Fort saves DC 12.

- Nikolai, how far away did you want to establish your camp from the Gnoll Warren?

- Linden, you could not think of any resources harvest-able in this area that would help fight the fungus. In your best guess, there's not a lot you can do about it until you leave the swamps.

- Camerons Ghilli suit materials are all wrong. At first it seemed like a decent haul of resources, until he noticed the infestation of worms, scorpions, and leeches in the parts he gathered. Maybe tomorrow? In response to the questions pushed on the Vegepygmies, off all his questions the only one they can answer is "Are there many Gnolls here", to which the Chieftan nods his head sadly.

- Nikolai, how far away did you want to establish your camp from the Gnoll Warren?

OOC: I was picturing far enough away so we can speak in a normal voice and not worry about being heard from the path or from the cave but also close enough that if things went bad with the spies, they would have a decent chance to make it back to camp. I'll let you make a judgement call as to the exact distance as you have a better grasp of the terrain and our movement through it without a path.

IC: Nikolai ponders the two trails. Most of the patrols use the southern trail. Is it because there is more danger from that area or because it heads to the main camp?

Nikolai asks for the tally of the number of individual gnolls the spies have been able to identify and makes a note as to the timing of the patrols going in both directions and the number of gnolls in each. Did any gnoll pass through that received greater respect than the others?

"One more day observing here to establish the pattern, then i suggest we go west and see what's there. My gut feeling the main gnoll camp is south, so I want to get this western path explored and out of the way first. We'll probably not have the time to check the western path out once we find the main camp, if indeed this isn't it. Any better ideas?"

If not, they duplicate their spying activities. Carver and Linden can busy themselves in camp making sharp poles to use in their crude camp defense.

There -are- some useful tidbits gleaned after day two.

-The Gnolls returning from the South are the same who left earlier in the day, heavily implying that these are patrols.

-No unknown or strange Gnolls seem to arrive from any direction. All the ones who leave are the same who return.

- The days worth of spying has yielded some beneficial results.

1. You notice that the larger patrols, 10 Gnolls in size, usually also have a larger Gnoll with them, or at least a Gnoll that the others show obvious deference to. In your second and first days, you would put this number at 5.

2. From time to time, there is a hooded Gnoll apparently unarmed but for a quarter-staff or sling, and these often add a Hyena or two with them on their patrols. You can report having seen at least 3 different Gnolls of this variety.

3. All total, within two days, you would put the number of basic Gnolls here to be at least 50, though its very possible the number is larger.

That night, at camp, the watch sits up considering their sour luck. The swamp is a terrible place to stay, but the mission is an important one.

Prudence and Nikolai (Seen to recall this as a watch pair?) Perception checks please.

Sweat beads congregate on Nikolai's forehead as one of the snakes takes a lunch at Pru. Smartly, she backs up and ads some magical protection, but she needs more room. Nikolai steps between her and the snake and gives a chop and a kick at the snake that likes to pick on women.

"Looks like we'll be augmenting our rations with snake steaks. I hear they taste like chicken. Pru, we want them cooked well done, not burnt crisp, OK?"

With a punch and a kick he tries to fend off the reptile.

(Sorry! Busy day!)

The fight is brief but fierce, but in less than a minute all three snakes lay dead in the camp. Several of the more pragmatic members immediately equate the creatures with food.

If careful, the snakes could produce enough meat to feed the entire party for 3 days.

Suvival: DC 10 to harvest snake meat.

The battle is so brief it does not attract the attention of any Gnolls, that you can detect. Night passes and morning brings a new adventure.

A group of about 15 gnolls are gathering with a few of their pack-leaders. Even more interesting, with them are a group of 10 manacled humanoids covered with white blankets thrown over their heads.

Survival 6 to aid Carver
" Thank you Carver. Some brave face I put on there eh? Screaming and wailing like a little girl. Its just that, I don't want to be eaten, if that makes any sense. Back when Uncle Morgan started training me and didn't want to leave me alone, a caravan went missing and he went out looking for it with a group of dwarves. When they found it the caravan had been raided and the dwarves had been eaten. The other dwarves were so upset, and I didn't understand why, besides the obvious horror that the giants that did it would eat their captives. Uncle Morgan explained and later I saw, they couldn't be given a proper clan burial like that. It stirred the other dwarves into a frenzy and they did hunt down the giants but that didn't make the bodies whole again. It was sad that they weren't able to be buried according to tradition. I don't want that fate either. Or you know, to be eaten, especially alive."
Cameron uses 2 of his spells to heal the rest of his wounds.
In the morning as the gnolls prepare to move, Cameron strings his bow. He is prepared to trail the gnolls and free the prisoners if and when the opportunity presents itself. He waits for official orders from his Thumb.

Fingering the invisibility potion, Tinker watches carefully and waits for orders.

Cameron starts applying his skills of observation to the gnoll patrol. Do any of them carry horns, drums, noisemakers of any kind? Are any of them animal handlers from what they have seen? What type of Humanoid are the prisoners? How bad ( wounded, malnourished, dirty, demoralized) do the prisoners look? How are the gnolls armed and armored? What type of leader does it look like, a wrrior or one of those shifty caster types we have seen?
Perception 23,28,11,30,14 I asked alot of questions, just making sure there are enough rolls to get some good ( or not by some of the rolls) answers.
" Here's what I am thinking before saving those captives gets labeled 'not on our mission'. First off they are captives and should be released, but that is off mission. Second, they are walking talking sources of intelligence about the inside of that enemy camp. Short of going inside there ourselves I cannot find a better source of intelligence on the inside of that place. Layout, guards, numbers, leaders, pets, treasures, anything we want to know. If they have been captives long, they may even know some of the language and know what the gnolls are after. Following them will get more of this area explored and maybe we will find more prisoners with more intelligence we can use. Unless we are going in that cave ourselves they are the best intelligence we will get on it. Of course if you want us to go inside I am up for that too."
" If we ambush them we should put a couple of silenced arrows into them to stop them from raising an alarm and then we charge, snipe, burn them down. Nothing fancy just good old Fist enemy neutralization. If we want to take the leader alive that can be done too, so long as he doesn't get away or alert the rest of the gnolls. He could be valuable for intelligence too"

The normally stoic warrior speaks up to the rest of the Fist. "The younger, more ideological me would say we have to save those humans because it is the right and 'good' thing to do."

He rubs the stubble coming in where his bear used to be a moment for continuing. "The more pragmatic me would say, they and their Gnoll captors could be an invaluable source of information, which is what we are after."

He smiles a bit as he speaks the next part. "In this case, those two things are far from mutually exclusive. In fact, it would be killing two birds with one stone. Cameron's idea for hitting hard and silencing with arrows seems like a good plan."

Skinning and cleaning a snake is a new experience for Pru, but it proves not to be too difficult. Better than scaling fish, anyway, a task Pru loathes.

The chained people interest her, though she's not as optimistic as her fist-mates about getting information from them.

"They're probably covered up so they can't see where they're going," she points out. "And if they do that a lot, the people might not have a lot of information for us." Still, she supports trying to rescue them; they could have information, and freeing them could disrupt the gnolls' operation.

DM OOC in response to Pru: You don't. They are "humanoid", 2 arms, 2 legs, a head and torso in relative proportions that are recognizable under the sheets. They could be elves, gnolls, whatever.

Cameron does his best to pick out details from among the prisoners, but much is obscured from him. They are moving at least, so they are alive.

A Gnoll captain, outfitted much like the one you battled at Hornfowl, barks orders to his men to get the slaves in line and moving out. They seem to be gathering at the mouth a southern trail, marked with fetishes, and ready to move out soon.

The party trackers are aware it will take some bit of skill to organize and move out whilst keeping the Gnolls in sight and not losing their trail in the mean-time as you circle to the south. Will you attempt to move half-speed, picking up their trail to catch up, or try and maneuver at full speed, hoping to keep the party of slaves and captors in sight?

Or perhaps there is some other plan to follow?

But from what we have learned about gnolls, other races are either slave labor, or food. OOC: DM, you mentioned 'southern trail'. I think we are closest to the northbound trail. The eastbound trail goes to the teleport vines and the westbound trail goes west. Is there a southbound trail we don't see on the map?

IC: Nikolai weighs the option to stay or follow the group and what each may gain. The overwhelming curiosity over who is under the sheets and where are they going wins out. He whispers to the group, "This is our best chance to see where else they have an establishment. If it is a labor camp, the Fist will want to know it so we can cripple them by knocking it out. And Cameron may be right in that the prisoners may be able to tell us some important stuff from within their lair. We either try to sneak into their lair knowing nothing, or we try to see what these prisoners can tell us. I'm for trying to set the prisoners free, but I'm also for seeing where they are going."

He looks around the camp to judge how long it would take to pack up and move out.

"Good thing is that they will be moving rather slow themselves with those covered prisoners. Let's get our stuff and move out shortly after them. We keep the quiet trackers ahead with the less quiet of us farther behind. Tracking won't be the issue, staying quiet will.

Cam, you take the potion of Invisibility the Captain gave us and go first. They may stop now and then so keep your eyes and ears tuned to them. If they stop, come back and report and don't let us get too close. The rest of us will follow behind at a safe distance. If we plan to ambush them, it would be best when they have marched all day and are less fresh. But I'd really like to see where they are going. Perhaps there are many more captives to be freed."

He awaits any objections or other ideas. It's not much to go on but it is there best break so far that does not mean tromping aimlessly up and down each path.

Constrained by Dwarves and halflings, Nikolai realizes that his group can't possibly circle in front of the enemy and decides to safely follow as close as possible.

As they circle the Gnoll warren, the do indeed pick up on another marked trail they had not previously encountered, which leads nearly straight south.

Cameron, as the groups point-man, easily finds the Gnolls initial tracks (DC 22 vs DC 15, success.) and finds they do indeed follow the main trail south for awhile. The slaves do significantly slow the Gnolls in the dense terrain, and Cameron has little issue catching up to within hearing range after about an hour of travel.

The Gnolls seem unaware of Cameron as he follows, and he settles in to an easy pace behind them until they abruptly turn off the main path and vanish into unmarked swamp.

Tracking 15 (+5 modifier for sound) vs DC 20 - Fail - Retry Timer: 1 hour per BRB

Cameron seems stumped. It takes nearly an hour of entering and leaving the trail at various points before he finally finds where the Gnolls broke from the main path. In that time, Double Fist catches up to their forward scout. Proceeding as a group, they follow the Gnolls trail no more than 200 meters off the path before they stumble into a large clearing, much like the one they discovered connected to the fields outside of Hornfowl.

There, still slick with red blood, is another of the strange cypress-trees, though about half as big as the last one. And there, on the ground, lies three of the slaves, bled to death over the plants.

" Not as good a tracker as I should be, and these captives paid the price for it."
Cameron pulls each of the captives away from the plant and cuts their bonds, arranging them as peacefully as he can. He checks each to see what race they are and if any have identifying marks on them. He also tries to judge how long they might have been captives of the gnolls. Once that is done, and done quickly, he puts his armor on and gets ready to go through the tree porter to the next location.
" We'll need to see where this goes, and see if we can catch up to that pack. We might still be able to free the remaining slaves and capture the leader, now that we have a smaller number of them pared away from the cave. Depending on where we come out though it might be tricky to get home."
He awaits Nikolai's decision, the observing one went well, as did the tracking one, all except they left Cameron to track and he messed it up.

"Don't be hard on yourself for loosing their tracks. We did consider the possibility they'd leave the path and risked as much as we dared. This job requires a level of patience we are not used to and seeing these dead captives is a test of our resolve to be patient. My guess is that they will need at least three to get back as well. Once we know enough of what they are up to and where they are going, we'll put an end to this atrocity. But we need to know where this one leads to.

Mark this spot down on our map. We'll want to be able to return to this spot and destroy these trees later on. For now, get ready for another teleport trip. I'll put my blood on the tree as soon as we are all ready. Wouldn't hurt to have your weapons ready too, just in case."

Two groves now. None of the other patrols had any captives in tow so it was safe to deduce they didn't travel anywhere outside the swamp. That the gnolls rely on captives for the teleport was cowardly in Nikolai's opinion.

Nikolai grinned at the thought of destroying the trees and trap the gnolls who knows where but he didn't want to have to explain any blank spots on their map.

When all are ready, Nikolai makes a cut on his palm and ...

That way, If there is trouble on the other side, a fast burst of healing from Linden will heal us all, and if he is unable for some reason to do that, nonw of us will be in trouble from blood loss. I am also assuming they can only transport things right next to them, thus the need for so many captive to operate the tree, we all want to be REALLY close to the tree before we give it blood."

A somber moment for Cameron: So quickly after his heroic intervention in the lives of 12 performers, he finds himself feeling responsible for the two humans and one elf laying dead on the ground.

Nikolai gives advice and consoles his soldier, pointing out that even the best soldiers cannot save everyone.

Nikolai volunteers to the man to pay the blood price for the magical cypress tree, only to be supported by his team down to even Pru, who sees herself (rightly so) every bit as capable of sacrifice as the more martial men in her Fist.

The cypress however, has other ideas. Then the cuts begin, the first to make his own mark over the tree, Nikolai, feels the toll pulled from his body forcibly. The entire blood price it seems, must be paid by one person if possible.

Spellcraft: DC 25 (+5 bonus if you successfully completed a spellcraft check regarding these plants before.)

Again you feel yourself being pulled through the magical channels the plants seem to create. After a brief moment of nausea, you look and try to gain your bearings.

You are again in a small clearing, much like the one you have left. A small beaten path lined with the same fetishes as before heads east a short ways, then comes to a trail running north and south.

Linden channels upon arrival, healing most of the damage Nikolai suffered from the teleportation effect. ( Nikolai suffers 9 damage from the teleport, and Linden channels for 8. So net 1 damage.)

Survival DC 15: Pick up the Gnolls trail.
Survival DC 24: Gain an accurate idea of exactly where you are at this given moment.

Cameron scouting ahead just shy of being in sight and the rest following far enough behind as not to alert the gnolls with any noise they make.

Tuesday September 30th, 2014 8:32:19 PM

Unsure quite where they are, but at least confident in where they are going, the group sets out, heading south, from some point unknown within the cursed swamp. The further south you travel, the wetter the land becomes. Other than the main trail, virtually everything around the halfling appears to be about neck deep.

Cameron has a hard time telling whether or not he is making any progress in catching their enemies, mostly because his small size is nearly a wash with the Gnolls moving at a speed necessary to guide their unfortunate blood-banks.

After only an hour or so, the path begins to become more well worn. Not much further south, Cameron notices that the swamp trees and foliage seem to have been cleared away. Though it is much smaller than the last, he has clearly found a second Gnoll base, which instead of being carved out of an open faced cave, seems to have been constructed primarily of swamp wood.

Waiting for the others to catch up, he finds no sign of the slaves or the previous pack of Gnolls. There are are 10 Gnolls guarding various positions in the camp.

Perception: DC 20

Highlight to display spoiler: {It appears that these Gnolls seem to be actively guarding rather than stuck on guard duty, like many of the Gnolls you have observed thus far. These are also armored in a metal scale armor, are are equipped with javelins, shields, and short-spears.}

As the IA encroach the Gnoll encampment, one of the Gnolls ears begin to twitch. He looks in the direction of Braugh and the centaurs and calls out to one of his fellows.

"Growly ruff bark?"

William alone is able to translate the query as simply curiosity, but before he can relay the message a nocked arrow and loaded bolt careen towards the Gnoll from Tinker and Cameron.

(Perception was just to get an idea of their gear and posture.)

"Hoowwwlly bark ruff! Aaaaaoooooooo!"

His call is answered by a few others from inside the compound, and a chorus of snarls begins throughout the camp.

Those who are searching notice a few buildings large enough to hold the Gnolls and their prisoners among the others in the area. (Labeled on the map with yellow borders.)

(Ah! Slight error on my part. Camerons arrow hits and wounds. Tinkers shot was a plink to the armor. Also, they never shot at you, I just wrote the last post badly. Edited for clarity.)

A minor volley comes from the swamp trees into the Gnoll camp, but between cover and luck, the Gnolls escape any real damage. The wounded Gnoll yelps, and runs into the nearest building while still clutching his arrow wound. The echoing howls come closer, and Gnolls begin to swarm from what looks to be a building far too small to accommodate more than one or two at a time.

Several gnolls loose Javelins at Double Fist, and one connects with Prudence.

Hit AC 21 for 3 damage.

(Movement on this map: Movement is normal pretty much everywhere unless you want to try and scramble over the top of a building or something. Its assumed theres enough room to maneuver between the various buildings. For clarity, there are 3 gnolls on towers in the south-eastern side of the base. )

Braughs glaive bites through a Gnolls armor, but only just enough for its pointed end to find home and slay the beast.

Tinker swaps weapons and swings, but misses his target.

Prudence showers hot flame over a trio of Gnolls. One manages to roll away from the brunt of the blast. Prudence observes that her attack had another effect. Just south of her, and all over the western edge of the camp, are a number of 6ft tall wooden structures that seem to be storage of some kind. As Pru's flames wash over and between them, one of them catches fire! Its still a small thing now, but could get out of hand..

Linden prepares to show his love for his team and for flower, initializing a sacrificial bond with Tinker.

Nikolai bursts through the glowing embers or Prus attack, but misses!

Basic Gnoll AC Info - AC 18 - (Scale Mail, Large Wooden Shield, Natural Armor)

One Gnoll takes a single look at Braugh and his gleaming armor and glaive, and quickly changes his mind, stepping close enough to swing his weapon at Cameron! (Hits AC 22 for 10 damage)

Two of the Gnolls, burned by Prudence, snarl at hack at her with their weapons! (Hit AC 17 and 22 for 6 and 4 damage)

Javelins fly, but pepper the ground to no effect.

Those who were watching the outpour of Gnolls notice the tide slows a little, and one Gnoll in particular seems to be shouting orders to the others. Wearing a green cloak and hood, and covered in fetishes and spellcasting component pouches, its a safe assumption that this is another of the divine caster Gnolls that your scouts had confirmed prior to the mission. Prudences flames finish melting those gnolls that had previously suffered at the hands of Camerons small magical fireball, but a heavy thumping from her left draws attention to a Gnoll beelining towards her. (Hits AC 18 for 4 damage)

One gnoll tries to make for Tinker, but is quickly caught and grappled by Nikolai.

A loud bark and a snarl come from the south, near Braugh and the Gnolls seem to beat a hasty retreat back to the small building from which they came. Several others seem to be making for a path to the main road, seemingly on a course for the blood-guzzling plants which brought Double Fist to this location to begin with.

Nikolai tries to keep his foe grappled:

CMB = d20 + 8 +5 (circumstance bonus) = 19

Maintaining his grip on the gnoll, he gives it a good knee jab:
dmg = 9

" We have runners headed for the blood cypress. They get away and we are discovered!" Cameron calls to his friends. he then runs around the gnoll in front of him as he starts chasing the runners.
" I'll slow them down but we can't let any get away!"
As Cameron runs he continues the inspiring story, knowing there are still gnolls pressing several of his companions.
He rips another 5d6 globe from the necklace and prays it hurts them more this time than it did before.
17 damage DC 14 reflex save for half damage
70' throw range so I should be able to hit the southernmost of the three headed out the gate. 20' radius burst should catch the other one running from Bruagh.

OOC. Sorry for missing Tuesday. That makes two weeks in a row that I screwed up our record.

Linden notices Carver taking off, then sees the gnolls in the distance. He figures that he and Carver have the best chance to catch them. Linden looks around to see if any other gnolls have broken off from the initial group of runners. He'll go after the strays.

"Ugh!" Pru is more indignant than injured at the gnoll's attack, but she realizes she can't take too many more of those.

But Cameron's shout draws her attention to the gnolls heading out the gate, and she does have a spell that can reach them. She steps away from her attacker and sends two Magic Missiles at one of the gnolls.

[6 damage to one of the gnolls leaving the gate.]

William runs as fast as he can towards the fleeing gnolls, and... (OOC - DM, I couldn't tell from the map the distance and layout of the fleeing gnolls so I'll need your help and discretion on this one ... if he can capture them in his spell, will cast Web... His goal is to stop them from getting away by the web engulfing at least those who are furthest away...

Range = 140' when casting so once William sprints 30', it'll go at least 140'...

The web DC is 17 vs. Reflex...

William quickly reacts, and his web spell easily ensnares the 3 southern fleeing Gnolls. They fight and thrash, but only one manages to break the sticky bonds holding him tight, but realizes he doesn't have much chance of getting away and falls back into captivity without so much as a yelp.

Between Pru and Carver, the last runner falls quickly.

The fire above-ground continues to spread, now engulfing 3 more of the above ground buildings.

You now have 3 living captives, a raging blaze, and a few non-threatening injuries.

(Out of combat.)

Cameron starts going house to house with the larger buildings looking for captives. He has no way to put out the flames, so he needs to get them out before they are consumed. He keeps looking skyward, trying to judge how long it will take for the plume of smoke to call in any patrols or to get a response from the main warren.
Perception, one for each large building 13, 24, 20, 22

With his own captive gnoll, if still alive, now tied up and guarded by the Fist, Nikolai helps search for slaves to free before the fires get to them, weary that he still might find a gnoll or two that didn't join the fight.

He'll try first by looking any conglomeration of tracks lead to:

But ends up resorting to tent-by-tent searching:

Linden grabs Pru and Tinker. "I'll heal your wounds before you get into another scrape." He uses one of his channels to heal the worse of the wounds. He invites anyone else into the circle of healing that needs it, including any gnolls (at great protest I'm sure). "We can't have wounded captives slowing our advance." He says in common as he looks at the three captives with concern. "If you understand me, understand that if you do anything stupid, you'll likely pass to Gargul at the hands of the Fist." He repeats his words in the three Tauric tongues he knows, while holding his holy symbol of Flower, and his rod of Flower, looking intently at the gnolls with hopes that they understand even a little of what he's said.

Everyone joining Linden's healing, heal 8 damage
Diplomacy 21, 23 if gnolls count as soldiers, mercenaries, wartime sailors or Mailed Fist for some reason (bonus from Legacy item)
Sense Motive 32 to detect anything useful from the demeanor of the gnolls

Cameron doesn't agree with healing the captive gnolls, nor did he see much need for them. But Nikolai had been one of those to capture one, so he must want them, for something. Cameron knows it is pointless to argue with Linden, so he shuts up, gets healed and returns to searching for the gnoll's captives.

Pru rushes to the well [or fountain; it's hard to tell] and begins trying to organize a bucket brigade to put out at least some of the fires.

Tinker thanks Linden for the healing and moves over to help with the captives. An offer of a set of manacles for one gnoll and rope for the others, the dwarf has to shake his head on Prudence trying to stop the fire, but then changes his mind and joins pulling water from the well. "Maybe this will show them we aren't just monsters trying to kill them all.

William will translate whatever is needed to be commo'd to the gnolls and suggests that they interrogate them forcefully to find out more about the gangs numbers, leaders, etc. he is strongly opposed to healing the gnolls as they are evil creatures...

DM Ken - Map So FarSouthern Fort  d100=99 ;

It doesn't take much work to get the fire under control. Throughout the process, a close watch is kept on the building that the Gnolls escaped through, and it doesn't as much as budge.

A search of the buildings large enough for prisoners turns up 3 elves chained to a heavy anchor in the middle of the floor. They are not too physically harmed, only slight bruises, but they are emaciated and thin, suffering from obvious dehydration and lack of nourishment.

The Gnolls do not resist, though they do nervously glance at the smaller burning areas, which as Prudence discovers during her fire-watch, serve as kennels for numerous Hyenas!

Not all the the kennels are full, and none of the burning ones contain the beasts, but about 12 Hyenas in all are caged on the premises. (The small brown buildings that line the camp.)

(D100% chance = .. oh crap - 99) Another problem, however, quickly arises. A strange noise comes from Carver. The spores and fungal mounds on his armor are multiplying at an astounding rate, easily visible to the naked eye. Though he has easily resisted any ill effects from the fungus so far, it seems that the spores have finally caught up to him.

Even without much training in healing, Nikolai realizes that unless Carver seeks treatment immediately, it's possible he may die. Since Linden had earlier discovered that the fungus was treatable, just not in this environs, sending Carver away seems the best bet for now. It would also be a chance to spare the freed captives from any further misery...
