Level Up! (Co-DM Ian)
Wednesday September 17th, 2014 2:59:42 PM

Garret fails to see how searching under the city is going to help it, but agrees to go along regardless.

Beriothian offers up his spell slots for anything specific the party may need.

Kyan reminisces about a time where they needed to fight a troll in the dark -- but the archives wouldn't have a troll in them! ...would they?

Sesha returns home, healing her ear only to remove it once more in a gruesome ritual.

Restlin does a bit of marketing, getting the brand out into the streets. From what he can tell, people seem to be moving around as quickly as possible. Perhaps no one wants to be the victim of the next random attack.

Katinka finally finishes her circlet, much to her delight. Add it to your character sheet!

The next day brings bright sunshine and the promise of good weather. Unfortunately, the Iron Adventurers will not be able to enjoy it, as they need to get to the Treasury and go deep, deep underground. But as each of the IA wakes up, they feel strangely prepared for this mission -- as though they've learned enough about the city to venture beneath its depths safely.

It was brought to your DMs attention lately that, for one reason or another, you haven't leveled in quite some time -- so everyone can go ahead and do that right now! Please level your characters to level 12 and send one of your DMs the new character sheet by Monday! I know that isn't a lot of time for high-level characters, so please let us know if you need help or anything.

Somewhat dejected, Restlin turns in early. He has trouble sleeping since, holy crap, he gets to go adventuring in what may be the best source for information on the Teucari tomorrow morning!

Bright-eyed and bushy tailed, Restlin heads to the treasury to get things rolling!

Beri is up bright and early making coffee.
Bosk, you are our resident Teucari fanatic, any thoughts on what we should be looking out for? Any special spells I should prepare? I have some extra slots since I'm not bringing any that require plants or thorns to be growing to cast.

I don't know what we should expect down there... but can we all agree ahead of time that we don't split up and go through different doors? Let's do something unexpected and stay together as a group on this one.

Sesha yawns and rolls out of bed, still pondering how today will go exactly. She has Restlins selected scarf and puts it on, wondering if she would ever be willing to show him what she was hiding under the veil, so to speak.

She knew Restlins taste for pretty things, and a girl with no nose and a missing eye was far from the standard definition of beauty.

Considering the limits of her magic, she was still confident in her magical advantages over Teucri artifacts like the Chit Machine. It wasn't fullproof. Now, if she had a proper coven.. she hadn't had a sniff of those in years. Perhaps she could bind some of the Iron Adventurers? She was sure she could sweet talk Restlin and Tink was pragmatic enough to see the benefits. Garret too. She wasn't sure about Bosk and Beri, or Kyan...

She would bring it up another time. Instead she starts downstairs and plops into a place to sit.

"Whats for breakfast?"

Bosk wakes up early and heads downstairs and begins frying up enough eggs ad sausage to feed an army, or some hungry Iron Adventurers. I'm afraid no one knows that much about the teucri, they are a mystery in many ways. That is one of the reasons I am so curious to learn more about them. I would suggest preparing a variety of spells and maybe leaving a spot or two open to prepare if a unique situation arises.

As he turns around to go back to the kitchen you notice something strange about the back of his head. His blond hair has darkened into an unmistakable scorpion shape, as if a tattoo extended into his fur...perhaps it is a trick of the light...but for an instance you could swear the tattoo moved.

Tink heads downstairs for breakfast. She's in quite a good mood - despite the recent troubles of Hook. The meal Bosk is cooking smells terrific. There looks to be quite a lot, perhaps enough for everyone. Then again, perhaps that is just how much a hungry minotaur eats?

She sits back a moment to look around the group, her gaze settling on Sesha. Should she get the witches attention, Tink smiles and nods in the direction of the sitting room - indicating the wish to speak privately.

Once they have a little privacy, Tink takes a seat. Her feet barely manage to touch the ground. I guess they may need to invest in some halfling sized chairs in the tower.

"I hope you don't take this as me prying or anything, but if you don't mind me saying, I may have an idea that might help conceal some of the - er - sacrifices you have made for your beliefs" Tink is trying to talk about Sesha's self-mutilation, but how exactly does one tactfully bring up such a subject before breakfast? "If your appearance concerns you, I could cast a Permanent Image on your face. You could look however you want. Granted, some might see through the illusion if they, er, interacted with you. But if it makes you self conscious or anything, I'd be happy to help"

Tink is genuinely trying to do something nice for Sesha, and can only hope that the witch does not take this offer for aid as a criticism of her current appearance.

"Or I could put a Permanent Image dedicated to Serenbeth on your face scarf if you like? I could make it a certain temperature or even a certain smell if you like"

We're Off To See the Archives, The Wonderful Archives of Hook(Co-DM Ian)
Thursday September 18th, 2014 5:08:07 PM

The Iron Adventurers awaken, refreshed and ready to go.

Garret is solely interested in getting to the Treasury -- what's going on around him is of little concern.

Restlin has trouble sleeping through the night, far too excited about the prospect of learning more about the Teucri.

Kyan, on the other hand, makes sure to sleep well before heading off to what he feels may be a suicide mission.

Beriothian is up early to make coffee, asking advice from those in the group who know a bit more about the Teucri for what spells to prepare, or what to look out for.

Sesha ponders the possibility of forming a coven with some members of her group, although they may not all be on-board with the idea.

Bosk cooks up a wonderful breakfast, offering advice to those who want it in regards to the Teucri. There seems to be a strange mark on his head, but he barely stays still long enough for anyone to see what it really is.

Katinka offers some help to Sesha with her seemingly annual sacrifices -- or, at least, some help in hiding them.

Breakfast is quick and delicious, and the air is crisp and cool as the Iron Adventurers set out towards the Treasury. Some are anxious, while others wonder exactly what good this mission may do for Hook City. Regardless, the IA trudges forward through the streets, encountering very little resistance in terms of traffic. In fact, it is some time before a group is even encountered -- and they seem to be quite strange.

About a hundred feet away down the street to the right of the IA, there seems to be a cart plodding slowly down the road. The cart seems to be filled to bursting with strange objects and what appears to be quite a large number of dogs. Their barking fills the air, which is what made you notice the cart in the first place. It is moving away from the IA, so they cannot see who is leading it, but it does seem to be surrounded by half a dozen children, some of whom seem to be crying.

But the treasury lies ahead! What is a cart full of dogs and some crying children to the Iron Adventurers of Hook City? Do they bother stopping for something like this? Or do they plough on ahead to their intended destination?

"That's weird," Restlin thinks to himself. Still, they have an appointment to keep. Restlin marches onward unless someone insists they investigate.

Sesha smiles happily at Katinka. She considers the offer for a long time, but realizes that she would be just as nervous about someone seeing through the illusion as she is about her veil dropping.

"Thank you but I feel like the burden of my disfigurements are mine to carry. I'd just worry about the illusion being seen through anyways."

Sesha is not only willing to go to the crying children, but quickly darts away with little more than a telling glance to Restlin that she was going with or without him. She pipes out a quick "Be right back!" to the others.

"Whats wrong little ones? Whats the problem?"

As the IA continues down the road Beri continues with his discussion of strategy.
You see, in the past we've had many situations where we start off in a group, but then something random catches a person's eye... yes Restlin, something like that cart... and before we have a chance to poperly cast our defensive spells or ready our weapons, half... of our group... *sighhhhhhhh*

Beri's sigh is unusually low and drawn out. His hair grows lighter and lighter and starts to blow around his head. Within moments his shape has changed into that of huge whirlwhind that could only be the body of an elder air elemental (assuming room permits of course).

Bosk AC: 32/15/29 CMD:26 HP 94 of 94 Spells

Why is he turning into an elemental to investigate what appears to be the local dog catcher? the cleric thinks as he watches Beri metamorph into a living tornado. Bosk follows the others towards the cage, keeping back and to the side of the others. While he would normally be closer to the front in a combat scenario, this appears to be more of a social issue that requires a silver tongue over the minotaur's woven blade. Besides, it never hurts to be spread out just enough that an area effect spell cannot blast everyone.

As he walks Bosk casts detect poison in case another assassin is lurking close by. (He will also cast detect magic on the cart and its driver if there is time).

Restlin notes the odd goings-on, but decides against going to do something about it. See below for more on your Perception results.

Sesha, on the other hand, is gone in a flash, kneeling down in front of out of the children to ask what happened. The child wipes tears from their eyes before managing to sob, "T-That m-m-m-man took my.... P-p-puppyyy!" The child then breaks down crying once more, completely incoherent.

Garret is right there with Sesha, keeping an eye out on the area. See below for more on your Perception results.

Beriothian sighs loudly as his breath turns into a whirling dervish of air.

Bosk wonders to himself what the point of this is, following behind those who are speaking to the man. See below for more on your Detect Magic.

Kyan checks the cart for anything odd, noticing nothing out of the ordinary about the children. See below for more on your Perception results.

Those of you who made Perception Checks notice how feeble the old man driving the cart seem -- and how manic the look is in his eyes. As the IA approaches, he whips around, staring at them with mad glee as he cackles to himself. The cart his donkey is dragging behind it seems to be full of strange gears and contraptions, and even dogs that are barking and making a constant racket -- as well as enough Alchemist's Fire to kill every child surrounding his cart...

"I am the Keeper Of All Canines!" the old man declares. "The Purveyor of Puppies! For dogs are delightful, delectable, demonstrably devoted, and divestified! The Watcher of Wolf-kin commands your respect! Only those who answer TWO QUESTIONS can earn the bounty of a puppy's freedom! WHO will take the challenge?"

Those of you with Detect Magic see the cart light up bright -- it seems that nearly everything in it is glowing with a magical aura. It almost gives you a headache to look at. Most of it is likely the Alchemist's Fire, although you would have to concentrate to see clearly. You also notice a long, red stick in the old man's hand that is glowing with a magical aura, and he seems to be keeping his thumb pressed against it very tightly...

Before leaving the tower for the day, Tink casts one of the newest spells she has added to her collection - Tishe's Weave Elements. The halfling woman has been waiting for the day she could cast this spell with great efficacy, and hopefully today will be that day. Her hands move about the elements at her disposal, and before long she has fashioned a wonderful vest - woven with the darkest threads of the deepest oceans waters. The dark vest fits nicely with her current attire.

"I wonder what else I could make" and sets to crafting four other vests for the IA.

"Hmmm.... I was expecting a crazy old lady" Tink shrugs.

She stands next to Restlin, arms folded, and watching to see what will happen next. "Given the multitude of laws here in Hook, I expect whoever wins will need a dog license"

Garret carefully slips into the group of children, trying to blend in while the others see to the crazy old man. He tries to blend in with the children, but will look around the area, still looking to see if there are others that could be involved with this insanity (Perception: 33).

The First Question (Co-DM Ian)
Monday September 22nd, 2014 2:57:00 AM

Restlin peers at the thing in the man's hand, but is unable to identify it. It is bright red rod, about six inches long, that the man seems intent on holding on to quite tightly, but the mage cannot be sure why. At his question, the old man simply laughs and says, "You don't listen well, boy! Doesn't bode well for these pooches!"

Beriothian notes the likeliness that this man is insane and lets the others take care of this, preferring instead to hover over the situation from above.

Katinka brings up the likelihood that whoever won would need a dog licence -- although, will she be the one to check if the children have any for their dogs?

Bosk accepts the challenge, but his attempt to subvert the man's questions only result in more laughter. "The cow-man is clever! But not clever enough! You need to answer TWO more questions!"

Kyan, noticing the chemicals in the man's cart, begins to usher the children back -- but the druid finds this to be difficult, as there is about half a dozen of them and they all seem insistent on staying near their dogs. (Make a Diplomacy check, please. Or Intimidate, or Bluff, whatever your style may be.)

Garret slips into the group of children that Kyan is attempting to herd. Whether or not the old man takes notice, he cannot tell. Looking around, the street seems rather empty. Perhaps because it is just past dawn?

The dogs in the cart continue to wine and bark harshly at the old man as he skips around behind the cart, taking a seat on the back and smiling widely at the group, revealing yellowed and rotten teeth. "Well, well, welly-well-wellington! Let's have the questions then, shall we?" There is a moment's pause before he bursts out laughing, exclaiming, "Oh, right! I'm supposed to ask YOU the question! Well, then..."

The old man takes on a more serious demeanor -- although with the crooked smile still on his face, he still looks quite demented. "Hook City faces great peril. The Ancient Ones have been betrayed. The New Upstarts are in disarray! Only the Pure of Heart and the Foes of Felines can win through the light! Will you swear to protect your puppy, and to use him -- or her -- ONLY for the salvation of our civilization?!"

Perception DC 34 Highlight to display spoiler: {While it is a fantastic one, the robes, beard, yellowed teeth, perhaps even the grime on his face -- it's all a disguise. You can see as the man's body moves that he is not as withered and weak as one may think."}

Tink immediately notices something peculiar about this man and the situation. But she doesn't want to alarm anyone. What to do, what to do.

She tries to subtly let the man know she is on to him, with a carefully worded message. "That dog looks quite nice. Not sure what languages the man speaks, Tink says only one other word - in auran though "Caution". It is the only way she can think of to covertly notify someone else that something doesn't feel right.

Still smiling, she casually moves around to place herself between the cart and the children. "Now now, children. There are grown-up matters to be discussed, and if I'm not mistaken, today is a school day too. You are fortunate to receive such an education in a city like Hook. Best be off now to learn all that you can. Run along and tell your friends that you got to see the Iron Adventurers patrolling the city this morning" Tink flashes her IA badge (Diplomacy to try and get the children away from the cart: 31)

Restlin looks around. Is this really happening? Is there really some crazy old man asking them to take a puppy and use it to save Hook City? There has been entirely too much craziness going on already.

He notes Tink indication caution, and decides maybe he should take this seriously, though he's really not sure that's possible. Still, he'll be darned if the Iron Adventurers are going to be linked to the mass incineration of puppies. He's not sure what that red stick in the guy's hand is, but he bets this cart could explode at his whim.

What if they rescue these puppies, then get them killed saving the city? It would be just like this guy to cast a geas on them.

Restlin signs, pulls out a coin and flips it in the air. "Heads I'm getting a new puppy," he calls out before grabbing the coin out of the air & slamming it into the back of his hand (d2 = 1 = heads). A long-dead monarch stares back at him from the coin. Without hesitation he looks the man square in the eye and answers, "you betcha!"

The Second of Two Questions (Co-DM Ian)  d20+32=37 ;

Katinka is the only member of the party able to see through the "old" man's ruse... but unfortunately, she is not sly enough to let her allies know without giving herself up. The message is confusing, at best, but from what the other Iron Adventurers can tell, Tink seems to really want one of these puppies. Perhaps the stress of defending Hook City has finally gotten to the Justicar? However, as she turns from the cart, the children seem to listen to her, backing up slowly, sniffling and sobbing. One asks meekly, "Will you get our puppies back miss Iron Adventrur... Advren... Miss?"

Restlin cannot believe his eyes. Although with Tink's warning of caution, her message becomes even more muddled. With the flip of a coin, it is decided -- Restlin will take a puppy!

Sesha notices nothing unusual, trying to help Tink with her corralling of the children. The witch does help, but perhaps not as she intended, as the children tend to shy away from her and avert their eyes from her face.

Bosk's mind races as he tries to remember if halflings eat dogs. No, no, that's goblins, goblins eat dogs, not halflings. In a flourish of fanciful words, he proclaims that he will take a dog.

Beriothian calls out a message in Auran, which to everyone who does not speak the language, feels and sounds like a pleasant breeze on your backs.

Garret busies himself with the children, but only serves in terrifying them more but suddenly appearing in the middle of the group of them. Two run towards Tink and grab onto her, while another runs back towards the cart, screaming and crying once more. The others are paralyzed with fear, most likely, between the halfling and the witch.

With each proclamation that someone will take a puppy, the old man screams with delight, jumping up and down on the spot. This seems to provoke the dogs as they bark louder, but he ignores them, turning to the party with a crooked smile and a bit of drool running down his chin. "Iron Adventurers! You do an old man's heart so good to know that these puppies will be going to a good home! But, but, there is one more, one more question, of course, of course, of course...

"By Rover, Spot, and Rex, I declare that names are powerful indeed! Whether you desire a pet or a means to save the lives of thousands, you must choose wisely! What will you call your puppy?"

He ends the question by once again plopping down on the end of the cart, rocking the bottles and strange mechanisms within it and eliciting sharp barks and whines from the puppies within.

DC 37 Sense Motive Highlight to display spoiler: {The old man seems nervous, a bit twitchy -- and not just in a way usually indicated by the mental health he is exhibiting. He keeps glancing at the cart, as though he is waiting for something. He isn't actually listening -- does he really care about these questions?}

Restlin begins to ponder. "What shall I name my puppy?" He looks at the kids and decides they probably already have names. Those kids may have already started training them to respond to those names. Who is he to rename a puppy?

He's Restlin the Wizard, that's who. "I shall name him, or her, Babou. He, or she, will be a mighty foe for evil felines indeed."

Then he hears Tink call the "old man" out. Obviously she was seeing something he didn't, but that Tink was a smart one & Restlin wasn't going to disagree. "Yea, buddy. Time to cut the act...right after I get my puppy. Seriously, which one's mine?"

Katinka steps forward and questions the old man about the true ownership of these puppies. Upon the mention of his disguise, he tenses up, but continues on chuckling to himself. "I can assure you, none o' these dogs wanna talk to you, believe you me." Despite this, the dogs continue to bark and whine behind him. "These kids mighta had the dogs, but they was mine to begin with. They don't deserves 'em, they don't!" He shakes the red stick in his fist angrily at Tink, a bit of spit flying from his mouth.

Kyan restrains the child with ease, although the kid is none too happy about it.

Restlin has begun enjoying himself apparently, and beings pondering the name of his hypothetical puppy. Even after the ruse is revealed, he seems more interested in pet ownership than the truth.

Garret watches the scene unfold in awe, moving around the cart and waiting for the inevitable explosion.

Bosk pronounces his dog's name and casts a spell. The old man hoots and hollers, throwing the rod at Bosk, but by the time it hits the ground, the item is inert. "S-Stay back!" he cries out, pulling out a matchbook from his pocket and lighting one shakily. "I don't need that thingy to light this place up!"

Sense Motive DC 31 Highlight to display spoiler: {You get the sneaking suspicion that the rod wasn't very important in the first place, the way he abandoned it. And the dispel magic only registered after he had thrown it. Perhaps he truly is mad, and just held onto the thing out of habit.}

Beriothian flies a bit higher.

Sesha offers some help, but after Bosk's encounter, it seems to be too late. The man is looking around wildly, his eyes wide and his smile that of someone who has lost their mind.

"Stay back!" he cries out. "Or this whole cart goes up with me and the dogs on it! Stay back, I swear, stay -- aw, you know what? Screw this." With a flourish, the beard and hat are removed to reveal that it truly was a costume, but the mad smile remains. "I've stalled long enough. Time to get this over with." With a few words and a quick motion, fog pours out from the formerly old man's hand, obscuring the immediate area around him and the cart.

Spellcraft DC 16 Highlight to display spoiler: {He cast Obscuring Mist.}

By some unheard command, puppies begin to pour out from the fog. What is momentarily a rather cute and happy scene turns brutal when they bear their fangs and begin to tear apart whoever is nearest. Before the Iron Adventurers can react, the puppies are upon them with a surprising amount of might -- but the first to fall is not one of them.

One of the children that had been following Katinka screams as a black dog descends on them. The screams are quickly cut off as the IA bear witness to this cruel event... before becoming victims of it themselves. Katinka, Garret and Bosk find themselves flanked as the animal tear into them, seeming to know where to strike for vital hits.

Katinka is assaulted from both sides as the two dogs leap from the fog! Attacks vs. Flatfooted AC: 21, 29 -- Katinka takes 41 damage and must make a DC 23 Fortitude save or DIE!

Garret on the other hand cannot be taken by surprise, and skilfully dodges the oncoming attacks. Attacks vs. Flatfooted AC -- 17, 19

Bosk is also quite lucky as the dogs gnaw at his armour, doing little to affect the minotaur. Attacks vs. Flatfooted AC -- 17, 24

Anyone attacked by the puppies who survives can make a DC 17 Will Save Highlight to display spoiler: {These puppies aren't puppies at all -- they're full-grown dogs, and they're incredibly angry!}

Tink shrugs off the bites from the dogs. These puppies sure had strong teeth! Her mind begins to race with how they could have possibly belonged to the children. But there is no time for that now.

Tink and the child are surrounded. Her first priority is to protect these children.

She places her bloodied hand on the child's shoulder "Let's get you out of here" and then activates her dimensional step ability, targeting the nearest rooftop. (Tink steps to H9, and the child C1 to H8 as a standard action. Use defensively so as not to provoke an AoO. Concentration check: 23. Should be a pass if you assume the ability is like a Dim Door spell)

Tink then draws on her heroic reserves to cast a spell to protect C4. (Use hero point for an extra action. Cast Resilient Sphere around C4.) The children are safe. For now.

"Aww damnit!" screams the wizard. "How about we acknowledge that people are trying to make bad things happen around us and not go sticking our heads into every odd thing that happens around here?"

"Make me fast, Shiny" he telepathically asks his sword (cat's grace).

He watches Tink take the kids up to the roof and desperately hopes they're not part of the ruse. If they are, she's just given them high-ground.

Swinging his vision back around, Restlin realizes he's face to face with one of these dogs (I assume the Os are dogs? I'm not clear on that.) He needs to get off this street, but decides to be brave and help his friends out first. He carefully takes a step back before casting haste centered on Bosk, affecting everyone except Beri (sorry, I'm not sure I can see you & you're too far away). If it looks like Beri will be moving forward, he'll hold off a few seconds, but the spell will be cast this round.

***

Move action: 5' step to L9
Standard Action: Cast haste

Haste: When making a full attack action, a hasted creature may make one extra attack with one natural or manufactured weapon. The attack is made using the creature's full base attack bonus, plus any modifiers appropriate to the situation. (This effect is not cumulative with similar effects, such as that provided by a speed weapon, nor does it actually grant an extra action, so you can't use it to cast a second spell or otherwise take an extra action in the round.)

A hasted creature gains a +1 bonus on attack rolls and a +1 dodge bonus to AC and Reflex saves. Any condition that makes you lose your Dexterity bonus to Armor Class (if any) also makes you lose dodge bonuses.

All of the hasted creature's modes of movement (including land movement, burrow, climb, fly, and swim) increase by 30 feet, to a maximum of twice the subject's normal speed using that form of movement. This increase counts as an enhancement bonus, and it affects the creature's jumping distance as normal for increased speed. Multiple haste effects don't stack. Haste dispels and counters slow.

Effects:

Mage armor - a long time
Haste - 10 rounds
See invisible - permanent
Cat's Grace - 3 minutes

AC this round is 31/23/24.

The difference between the Puppies (P) and Other Puppies (O) is so I can keep track of different stats for different creatures. Physically, they look no different than the other puppies.

Katinka comes dangerously close to death -- for a moment, she even swears she can hear the distant cackling of a servant of Gargul -- but she pulls through, moving forward only to teleport back with the children. She brings up a reserve of effort she did not know she had, managing to cast a spell very quickly to protect another. Looking around, she cannot see anyone skulking in the shadows, nor does she suspect the child of anything but absolute terror.

Restlin takes a step back, buffing his allies in favour of getting himself out of the way of these creatures.

Kyan lets out a string of curses that, were the children not terrified or dead, they might have objected to. With a sweep of his sword, he cleaves the puppy in two, leaving it bleeding on the ground.

Garret moves quickly, taking down the puppy in front of him with ease before moving on to the next one, which he has a bit more trouble hitting. (Attacks 1 through 4 knock out P3, Attack 5 misses O1 and Attack 6 hits.)

Sesha moves forward to help the child, but is quickly passed the corpse by her ally. After casting a quick spell on the nearest creature, but the dog shakes it off with ease. (Will Save: Nat 20, 24) With a quick and strange spell, the child resumes shallow breathing once more, although does not wake up.

After playing hot potato with the child, Bosk channels positive energy to heal all of those around him. Everyone is healed for 8HP... including O1. The child's eyes open quickly and from the mouth of babes comes a horrified and pained scream. With more heroic effort, he turns and makes an attack on the nearby animals. While he shreds through many of them, none fall to the ground. (Forgot to place the dead child on the map, so I'll let you take these actions. My bad for the confusion.)

Beriothian swoops down to disperse the fog as quickly as he can. (Since I can't find the rules on this, I'll assume an air elemental creates a moderate wind, dispersing the fog in 3 rounds.)

P1 , P2 and O2 leap at Bosk, trying to bite down on his arm, but both miss horrendously. (Attacks: 14, 16, 21)

O1 and P3 turns their sights on Garret, but it seems their luck is not with them today. (Attacks: 26, 19)

O3 tries its hand at revenge on Sesha, biting down hard on her calf. (Attack: Nat 20, 35 -- Confirms with 24 -- Damage: 34)

O4 tries to tear in to the druid Kyan, but falls short of the mark. (Attack: 19)

ROUND 2

A lot of flanking bonuses were added in after the roll, so if the numbers are off, that's why.

"You're safe now little one" Tink tries to comfort the child. "But right now I need you to be brave. I want you to run to the other side of this building and call as loudly as you can for the guards. Can you do that for me? Right now you are an honorary Iron Adenturer, ok?"

With the child now safe, and the other one fully enveloped in the resilient sphere, Tink can turn her attention to the man. He may have looked old, but Tink saw through his disguise. Hmm... he may be shedding it right now, or donning another.

She activates her ring of invisibility and takes to the air towards where she recalls seeing the cart.

Katinka gives the child some instructions, and they quickly blunder off to the back of the building. Turning her attention to the battle, she flies out over where she saw the cart.

Kyan makes quick work of another puppy, slicing its flesh to ribbons with his sword.

Sesha repeats her spell from before, succeeding with ease this time. (Will Save: 12)

Restlin finds himself a bit further away from the action, and so he begins to summon something to help with the effort.

Garret unleashes his fury on the nearest animal, bringing down P3 with four attacks, and turning the final two on O1.

Bosk slips up a bit in his attacks, but still manages to pull out a few solid hits, dropping O1 in the process.

Beriothian begins casting a spell to neutralize the pile of Alchemist Fires in the cart. (For the purposes of this spell, we'll count all of the Alchemist Fire as a single magic item.)

Seeing that they are beginning to fail, the animal re-double their efforts. Moving away from the untouchable Bosk, O2 turns its attention on Restlin, biting down hard on his leg as he attempts to retain control of his spell! (Attack: 28 -- Damage: 13)

P1 is still trying to take down Bosk, but in a different way now, it seems. Gnawing at his ankles, it cannot however trip up the enormous cleric. (Combat Maneuver to Trip: 11)

But from the fog come two more assailants, first P5, which takes Bosk's attack of opportunity in stride, attempting to trip him as its ally did -- however, it has about as much luck as its ally. (Combat Maneuver to Trip: 10)

But even more terrifying is O5, who runs out and leaps at Garret, it's jaw closing around his throat! (Attack: 55 -- Damage: 31 -- Garret must make a DC 23 Fortitude Save or DIE!)

As Katinka hovers over the battle invisible, a puppy flies out from the fog beneath her, making a beeline for the alleyway -- although whether it is trying to escape or get the flank, she cannot tell.

I don't either under Whirlwind(Su), nor under Change Shape (Su). So it'll be up to Ian.

Use Special Ability
Using a special ability is usually a standard action, but whether it is a standard action, a full-round action, or not an action at all is defined by the ability.

Spell-Like Abilities (Sp)
Using a spell-like ability works like casting a spell in that it requires concentration and provokes attacks of opportunity. Spell-like abilities can be disrupted. If your concentration is broken, the attempt to use the ability fails, but the attempt counts as if you had used the ability. The casting time of a spell-like ability is 1 standard action, unless the ability description notes otherwise.

Using a Spell-Like Ability on the Defensive: You may attempt to use a spell-like ability on the defensive, just as with casting a spell. If the concentration check (DC 15 + double the spell's level) fails, you can't use the ability, but the attempt counts as if you had used the ability.

Supernatural Abilities (Su)
Using a supernatural ability is usually a standard action (unless defined otherwise by the ability's description). Its use cannot be disrupted, does not require concentration, and does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

Extraordinary Abilities (Ex)
Using an extraordinary ability is usually not an action because most extraordinary abilities automatically happen in a reactive fashion. Those extraordinary abilities that are actions are usually standard actions that cannot be disrupted, do not require concentration, and do not provoke attacks of opportunity.

Sesha watches with a gasp as Garret falls, the beasts jaws still clamped over his throat. She should have been angry, but at this moment all she felt was an immense love for Serenbeth.. her Little Spirit. Thanks to her patron, no one was dying today, unless Sesha herself died first.

With her adjacent enemy incapacitated (o3), Sesha has a little room. She looks within herself, to the worst of times, and channels the same confusion she's felt as a girl among two peoples.. forcing it into reality in a small burst of enchantment magic. (Confusion, O5, P5, P1 - Will Save DC 22 10+7+4+1 or be confused. )

Confusion - Paizo

Taking a small step around the held hound, she takes a deep breath and exhales, channeling the essence of Serenbeth and leaving it to settle over Garret. She cared for this Halfling, who she had known for some time now, and he wouldn't die here while she had the power to stop it!

Bosk continues his onslaught, taking down P1 in a flurry of strikes.

Katinka calls out a warning to her friends, peering down at the animal. She sees that it does, in fact, have an aura of illusion.

Kyan isn't as lucky as he has been, managing only one his against his target.

Beriothian drops down and begins to attack the nearest animal. His efforts are enough to drop the beast!

Sesha watches her friend fall as the dog rips him apart. Casting Confusion, she is able to incapacitate one of her targets. (P1 is dead, Will Saves: 13, 24) With a heroic effort, she casts another spell, bringing her friend back from the brink of death.

Garret experiences a strange sickening sensation in his stomach, followed by a great darkness, followed by the familiar sounds of battle and a great pain in his throat. Despite his spiritual whiplash, he manages to scramble to his feet and ready himself for more.

O5 staggers around in confusion, looking for the nearest target between Garret, Bosk, and P5. It chooses (d3=3) its ally, P5! Unfortunately, in its muddled state, it misses.

P5, perhaps angered that the dead one is back up, lashes out at Garret once more, but it cannot even come close to hitting the monk.

P2 strikes out ineffectually at the new celestial being that has appeared.

Katinka continues to follow the puppy, identifying the spell cast on it as Veil.

With another blinding flash of steel, Kyan cleaves P6 in two!

Garret pummels the nearest animal, taking it down and moving on to the next one with minor success.

Sesha goes to cast a spell, but her target is already taken care of! (Redirected to a new target: see below.)

Bosk makes quick work of O5 and lays into P2 quite easily, and drops it thanks to the summoned creature's contribution.

Beriothian turns on the held animal, slamming into it with the bustling fury of his current form.

For a split second, the battlefield is quiet, before a loud bark comes from behind Kyan... and another dog launches itself from the north-eastern alleyway! It leaps onto the druid, going for his throat! (Attack: 35 - Crit Confirm: 30, confirmed - Damage: 33)

Seeing an opportunity, Sesha turns her spell onto the new target, but its mind is much too strong for the confusion to take root. (Will Save: 26)

Tink pursues the dog - but that spell? Veil? She knows well enough what that spell can do, and focuses even further on the 'dog', trying to disbelieve her eyes and see it for what it may truly be.

Garret turns his fury onto the held creature, knocking it out, although it still remains perfectly still on its feet.

Kyan protests the group's desire for a dog, slicing into the creature effectively.

Restlin moves into position to help his injured friend.

Katinka focuses on the puppy and sees... a larger, meaner looking dog. A strange disguise, but apparently an effective one. She turns to the old man and prepares to counter anything he may cast.

Bosk turns towards the "Old Man" and assaults him with many attacks, but finds that the old timer is much more nimble than anticipated -- only one blow lands! It seems he has better training than his canine companions.

Beriothian slams into the old man, who cannot dodge his blows.

O6 attempts to finish the job on Kyan, but the slash across its chest impedes it far too much. (Attacks: 24, 9)

Seeing he is apparently alone, the "Old Man" gets a crazy look in his eye, looking at Bosk... until Restlin pops into the scene. With a mad grin, he takes a 5-foot step forward and stabs at the mage with a gnarled dagger! (Attacks: 37, 17 -- Damage: 14)

"Move to the other side of the building, child! Move away from this danger" Tink calls down to the child still standing on the rooftop below her. The child may be frightened of a voice coming from nowhere, but there are scarier things at work at the moment.

She flies to the other side of the road to get a better view of the battlefield, and sees the blood drip from Restlin. One more crime this 'old man' is guilty of.

No, he will certainly be facing judgement this day.

Tink determines a Wall of Force to be her best course of action. It keeps the man from escaping, it keeps him from that mysterious cart, and it serves as a barrier should the cart explode any time soon - something she is still wary of.

The Puppies Are Dead (Co-DM Ian)
Friday October 3rd, 2014 10:13:04 PM

Through the combined physical effort of the IA, the final enemies fall, and the street is once again consumed by silence. The Obscuring Mist clears, and the cart is left devoid of any puppies. Anyone who cast a spell in the last round can retain their spells if they wish, or cast them anyways - all saves fail, as these people have fallen to the ground, apparently done.

The illusion fades, and all dogs marked as O on the map appear as much, much larger dogs - while the others remain a bit smaller. There does not seem to be a uniform type of dog or any common theme. The children are crying and whimpering, some staring at their dead dogs, some staring at their own wounds. So far, there does not seem to be any guard presence.

"That cart may still be volatile. We should keep the children - and guards - back until we are sure it is safe"

She flies up to the roof on the building on the west to help the child she left up there get back down. Once done she also dismisses the resilient sphere around the other child.

"You two should really run along now - either to school or to home. It is still not safe here"

Saturday October 4th, 2014 9:47:08 PM

The commotion, of course, has awakened the neighborhood, and as any sensible person would expect, the parents of the kids come rushing up in desperation and snatching up their kids and hugging them like you've never seen before.

The IA find themselves trying to piece together what happened and why while parents and kids are sobbing and thanking the IA for saving their kids.

Somehow, in all that, it is revealed that the said puppies were given to the kids just the day before. The parents agreed to it as a diversion for the kids during these hard times. It seems clear to them now that it was some devious plot. Who'd give puppies away to just snatch them back and put them and the kids through this horrible thing?

The neighborhood awakens to an insidious reality that has been hitting other neighborhoods here and there. Their world has changed and there seems to be no one at the helm.

Set into this chaos the Protector Group assigned by the Inspector to guard and maintain the peace in this neighborhood show up. They are on official business and want to know what happened. Since the IA knows how the Inspector runs his organization, they know they are expected to give a full report, even if it takes all day, and leave nothing out.

When Bosk finds out that the children had only just received the dogs Bosk feels a little better. An Avenger is always in control of their emotions...well...nearly always...but that doesn't mean that they cease to have them. As way of an apology, to ease the children's suffering as well as for his own guilty feelings, the cleric offers the parents of each child enough money to replace the lost pets. We are sorry for this. To think someone would use children and animals in this way. Still, a pet is a fine way for a child to learn responsibility as well as nurture any gifts they may have in that area. I do not want the children to be deprived of that experience because of that crazed man.

"These things were such a good idea. I must remember to thank Garret again"

"This area is still not safe. I recommend placing men there, there and there to stop civilians from getting closer. I also recommend keeping your distance from that cart, and from those dogs. Once I am sure that the danger is .. manageable .. I will be glad to provide you with my complete report. Who is the leader of your group?"

Question to DM: Did Tink's perception check on the dogs, the man and the rod result in anything? Did they have any possessions? Anything with a magical aura? A map to their headquarters perhaps? :) Oh, and was she able to remove his disguise?

Tink trusts Restlin to thoroughly search the cart. Once she gets the nod, she will then debrief the leader of the protector group. She does so in a very formal manner.

"At approximately 9am, my group consisting of <insert full names here> were walking down Fifth Lane, when we observed a commotion being caused by a group of children. We proceeded to investigate...."

Tink is very thorough in her details and descriptions, and tells how she noticed peculiarities in the mans behaviour and her beliefs he wore a disguise.

DM OOC: Katinka asks: Question to DM: Did Tink's perception check on the dogs, the man and the rod result in anything? Did they have any possessions? Anything with a magical aura? A map to their headquarters perhaps? :) Oh, and was she able to remove his disguise?

Perception - dogs: 28
Perception - old man: 35
Perception - rod: 30
All with Arcane Sight. Spellcraft checks to ID any auras or magical equipment: 31 (assume 21 + Take 10)

In the few rounds you've had to start looking over things before the parents show up and the Protector Group assigned to the zone shows up, you determine the following:

The dogs look like hefty war dogs and shimmer with multiple magical auras, layer upon layer upon layer. It will take a few more minutes to weed through each one.

The 'old man' is really a strong middle-aged man apparently wearing a disguise from a disguise kit. He also shimmers with magic auras and wears leather armor, a sling, a scimitar, a belt, headband, ring, a cloak, and what appears to be one of those Eberyon Tears. His pack jingles with some stuff too. The leather armor, sling, scimitar, and backpack do not radiate magic, but the other stuff do as well his body.

The rod only has one aura, that of Prestidigitation.

Most of the auras are Faint, a few Moderate.

DM OOC: I'm assuming that you are doing a quick scan at this point to assess what is and isn't radiating magic. Arcane Sight gives you the strength of the auras but each aura requires it's own Spellcraft check. It 31 is your min roll for Take 10, then there is no question as to finding out each aura, only a question of how many minutes you want to take.

For the few moments you've had so far, the above is what you've found out. We'll deal with further details at each post you state you are checking.

The way I read Arcane Sight, as you scan an area, you see the strength of magical auras like different 'colors', that's why it takes no concentration to determine the strength of those auras. But since it takes a Spellcraft check for each aura to determine the school, it will take more time for such details than just a quick look-see.

At least in this case, it doesn't seem there'll be any issue on the time factor.

For now she wants to bag up this evidence (winnings?) so as to turn the rest of the area over to the legitimate protector group as quickly as possible. Inspecting things is finer detail can be done later.

The Street is a shambles. Blood everywhere. Parents getting crying kids back up the street, one kid hollering from the roof of a home where Katinka left her. Other dogs several blocks away start barking up a storm, passing on the news that there was a dogfight somewhere nearby and they weren't invited.

And the Protector group wants to know what the blazes happened!

Katinka starts with giving orders, er, recommendations, to the Protector group, and receives a nasty
scowl from the Commander in answer. So she starts with the proverbial 9am and all is quiet introduction and then goes into great detail of what was said by whom and when and how it all went sour. One of the Protector's jots all this down while the Commander listens intently.

Beri seconds Katinka's account. Seeing the records keeper jotting everything down, he's pretty sure the story about the dogs will be told.

Meanwhile, during Katinka's recap of the events, Restlin gets ansy about their mission. They were supposed to meet the Inspector at the Treasury. Not wanting to leave their friend hanging, he offers some coin to a young man on the sidewalk watching the events. Seeing the coin and not a chit, the man grins and heads off to the Treasury at a good clip.

Kyan takes care of some minor scratches while he waits for things to settle down.

Sesha is reluctant to bring the 'old' man back to life but does so anyway with her Save/Slay ability, but not before removing his equipment. Maybe that would mean less time answering questions and getting on to business.

Garret chimes in that three of the big dogs are not truly dead either. The monk thought it wise to use only non-lethal attacks.

Having pointed that out, Katinka cautions the Protector group about their deadly bites, for which the Commander looks at her with incredulity, "Really. That dog can kill with a one bite?"

Beri, a bit sympathetic towards the dogs, figures there's bound to be good in them somewhere and hopes they can be 'rehabilitated'.

"Yeah, we have a mage that can change them into chewappodles," one snickers.

Bosk brings up a good question as to how such war trained dogs got into Hook city in the first place. A puzzle to work out at some later date. With a hand full of coins, he again offers to pay for the purchase of puppies for the kids. However after what just happened, most of the kids are a bit traumatized and shy away from wanting a dog, for now, at least.

"I think we'll settle for a goldfish. Thanks anyway," one parent smiles at Bosk.

With her story told, Katinka has an Unseen Servant scuttle around and put things into a bag, afraid to touch them herself.

HEY! What do you think you are doing? All that stuff is evidence! The Inspector will want to see everything! You want me to get demoted?! Am I to tell the Inspector that some other group absconded with key evidence? the Commander blurts out.

"You may look at it, but all this stuff, wagon and all, goes to the Inspector. There's been way to many weird things going on and he wants to look at everything directly himself!"

Sense Motive DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: {He is genuine with his demands and is only following orders.}

"I'll put your name on any items you want to keep and when the Inspector is through with them, he'll give them back. His word on it," the Commander says in a more diplomatic tone.

Tink is in her element. She stands at her full 3'1" with her hands clasped behind her back. In her experience, showing respect to a leader in front of his men often helps get things done. Should the Commander try to sense her motives, he will determine that she genuinely wants to help, and does indeed respect legitimate authority.

"Oops," he says before stepping up there & returning with him. He makes sure the kids are all fully healed, asking Sesha for assistance if his own minor powers aren't up to the task.

Important tasks done, Restlin listens as the parents decide that maybe fish would make a better pet. "Goldfish make fine pets," he says before prestidigitizing minor glamours of fish to chase the children around. He doesn't push the issue, as the kids may not feel like playing.

A little diplomacy goes a long way, unless you roll a 1. But Katinga puts on her charm and some street-wise knowledge and a potentially tense moment is diffused.

As the IA know, the Protector groups, as a whole, are a mix of individuals and skills much like the IA. As such, this one also comprises of mixed skills, including a wizard of their own. However the commander
sees no reason to prevent the IA to finish their investigations. You never know what might happen... and it
is better to happen to someone else if you can help it.

So the Protectors do their own thing while Katinka 'investigates'. The Alchemist Fire vials are carefully removed from the cart and the live dogs are carefully loaded up. The dead ones will be left for the street cleaning crew. The records keeper, a cleric with a pinchant for details writes up a neat document listing the items Katinka has set aside and hands it to Katinka to sign.

Meanwhile...

The kid still crying on the roof has a couple of parents clamoring to the IA to quit their goofing around and
get their kid down before she tumbles off.

Restlin dutifully complies and tries to lighten the mood by conjuring up little translucent goldfish that
float around in mid-air and puff air bubbles. It helps, but the blood all over the street dampens any child's desire to go chasing after the fish and bubbles.

Very quickly the street is empty of parents and kids and only the IA, the Protector group, and a hand full of curious citizens are left.

Katinka recalls that there are some spells that can be cast on animals, or humanoids that have natural attacks, to enhance such attacks. And of course there's those spells that increase strength and such. But that does not explain the deadliness of one bite, though. That is still a mystery.

The magical items identify as follows:
Belt of Stength +2, Eberyon's Tear of Shock (+1d6), Ring of Protection +1, Headband of Wisodm +1,
Cloak of Resistance +2.

Non-magical items:
Leather armor, MW sling, MW Scimitar.

She notices nothing unusual about the backpack. The 'jingling' noises have the familiar sound of coins and glass. Only way to know for sure is to open it or use Gingleblex's Monocule of See-Through-Things.
An item banned in most places, for obvious reasons.

Sesha confides her thoughts on Katinka to Restlin and to Beri her misgivings of bringing the dogs to
the tower.

Beri proposes perhaps leaving the dogs at the druid's garden instead of destroying them. Beri's own nature loving self just can't see destroying them, yet.

Garret positions himself behind the 'old' man and prepares himself in case the 'old' man tries something. Barely conscious, (0 hp), he doesn't try anything and is quickly tied up and placed on the cart with a Protector as guard.

Bosk's idea of using Baleful Polymorph to change the to cute little puppies they once were is worth some thought.

Kyan believes a proper master with some proper training will do the trick.

All good ideas but right now the IA have a meeting with the Inspector.

Which, for those who may have forgotten, brings up a very winded young man to Restlin. He's out of breath and can barely speak, but the jist is that he passed on Restlin's message to a guard at the Treasury who said he'd pass the word on to the Inspector that the IA will be running a little late.

Whew! Puff! Puff! Wheeeze!

So, all that is left, I think, is seeing what is in the backpack and signing the document with the list of stuff.

With some extra care, the backpack is found to hold a pouch of coins (not chits) totaling 250gp. Their are several glass vials. some empty, two stoppered and seemingly unused.

The Protector's records keeper jots it all down and adds it to the list.

DM JT OOC: are we done here? I figure you'll want to see what the vials are or were and maybe see if the 0 hp guy can answer any questions.

Alchemy is not something Tink knows much about. She has a sniff of the empty glass vials, but suspects Sesha may be better suited to identifying their prior contents.

She hands all evidence over to the Protector group and signs the document provided.

"I am glad we had the chance to work cooperatively. If you're ever in our neighbourhood and need a hand, be sure to come find me" Tink extends her hand to the Commander of the Protector group.

Detailed examination of the rod quickly reveals that it is not of much interest to anyone but a street performer perhaps. The Prestidigitation cast on it soon expires and it just becomes a stick.

Katinka sings the document after taking a quick check of the vials found in the backpack. Two vials glow with magic and are from the Healing school. Several empty vials radiate very faint magic, fading fast. The rest of the empty vials don't radiate magic. Sniffing the vials don't reveal anything she is familiar with.

The Commander shakes Katinkas hand and thanks the IA for their assistance in their protectorate. He
explains that they can use all the help they can get. Too much weird stuff going on. But does not
elaborate.

Restlin pays the young man for his expeditious message delivery service and the young man replies with "Anytime you need me."

Garret is satisfied that the 0hps 'old' man won't be trying much. He is bound tight and watched
carefully by the Protector group.

Bosk confirms that the magic vials are what Katinka says they are, healing types. As far as the
non-magical remains from the empty vials, he'll need some knowledge in alchemy.

Bosk verifies that the document looks right. The team sports an emblem that look familiar. They've seen other protector groups wearing it. Three 'hooks' on a blue shield. This must be Inspector Auslander's
way of authenticating the Protector groups. They radiate a faint magic.

Had the IA joined the inspector, they'd be wearing one too.

Both Beri and Kyan are ready to move on and let the men in black finish the clean up process.

"Nothing happened here. Nothing to see. Look into my little wand... see? You didn't see anything, right?"

Sesha thanks Tink for keeping her from doing something she'd regret doing later on and is ready to move out as well.

--------------------------------------------------

The Commander of the Protector group gathers up his men, the cart, the unconscious dogs, the evidence, and the prisoner and start towards the Treasury, which is where the IA are going as well, just a little faster.

The guards at the Treasury entrance seem to be familiar with the IA and let them in, wherein they are
quickly accosted by a young woman. The Treasury being such a huge place, puts the young novice government workers to escort visitors to their destinations, as most don't have a clue on how to navigate the Treasury Maze.

Soon they are at the inspector's office. It is the same one they've been in before. The Inspector invites them in and offers them some chairs.

"Glad you could make it. I heard you had a side-trip on your way here. Unfortunately these side-trips have become far more common than even I would have guessed. The IA are not the only ones being targetted, so don't feel like you are being singled out. I'm collecting everything I can to see if we can find a pattern.

Sad to say, there have been some deaths. Some nobility, some Protector members, some average bloke. You don't see the crowds in front of the Treasury anymore and for good reason. People are getting scared. Thing is, who is doing it? Is it just one?

That's why we are looking for patterns. We know of one group that might be involved, led by Socraterius, who used to work here in the Treasury. His crazed group believe that the Teucri artifacts are all cursed and must all be destroyed. As you know, most Teucri artifacts are simply art objects or jewelry. Socraterius' group doesn't care what it is, they believe them all cursed.

But is he crazy enough to do these killings? We don't know. They seem far more organized than a crazy cook could put together.

But all this has to stop! And everything seems to revolve around the Teucri. Whether it is the dormant Chit machine, or some paranoia over a fancy mug. It has to stop.

We have powerful groups wanting the Chit machine back vying with powerful groups wanting to prevent it. Either way, it is a big mess. And I have to keep order in this city!

Me and a few others have thought hard about this and come to only one viable conclusion. Now maybe you should sit down if you aren't already.

Our proposal is to send you, the IA, and independent party, not affiliated with any of the political groups or the city, to search for the Teucri and see what can be done. I personally don't care if the Chit machine can be fixed or not. But if you find the Teucri and get a definite Yes or No, it might help settle things down a little. If they can't fix it or choose not to, then that should shut some people up."

Inspector Auslander, with Sergeant Capon at hand, pause and let things set in.

Finally at the treasury, Restlin is practically bursting with excitement. He tries not to show it, since it's unseemly to be excited while other protection groups, as well as average citizens, are dying in the streets.

"We'll do our darndest to get to the bottom of things down there, Inspector. Any final words of advice before we get going?"

The Chit Machine.

Again.

The people of this city were so soft.. so dependent on the magic of a missing race to make their lives comfortable.. it made Sesha miss the Ga'alin barbarians, her life-kin, if only for a moment.

PP:"But then you'd miss Restlin..."

Pot-pot's voice barged in on her quiet reflection, agitatiting the young witch to no end.

S:"Mind your business, kettle. Or I'll use you to wash Anrete's undergarments."

PP:"We both know he probably doesn't wear any.."

Quickly severing that line of communication, and squashing the mental image with a blush, Sesha finds a distraction, the business at hand.

"I would like to find Socraterius too, for my own reasons. Do you have any possessions of his still here? It would help a lot with divinations. Also, does finding him take a back door to searching these rooms?"

Not being from around here, he is not sure of things, but he cannot hold his tongue and blurts out, "But wait, I thought no one had seen these Teucri for hundreds or thousands of years. And now you think suddenly we can find them?" He looks around at the others as he continues, "We might be a bit more powerful than the average laborer in mud-town, but I think you give us much more credit than we deserve if you think we can find a race of people that hasn't been seen in hundreds and hundreds of years -- and I'm sure we won't be the first to try and find them!"

Yes, I think we are all more than honored to be given this task. I know nobody has come up with an answer at this point, but do you know of any theories people have come up with that we can keep in mind when we go down? Restlin is so eager to go on this new adventure that he has trouble hiding it. But he contains his enthusiasm and asks for any advice before they set off.

Sesha debates with Pot-pot the value of having joined up with the IA. To evade some of the truth Pot-pot brought up, Sesha asks the inspector if perhaps there is something owned by the crazed librarian that she might could use to help locate him.

Garret expresses some doubt about the IA's capabilities of finding a race of people where so many others have failed.

Katinka remains quiet and ponders the news that other Protector groups have been attacked as well.

Bosk scrapes the bottom of the barrel for any memory of past Teucri encounters and finds that he's never read anything about such things. Everything he knows about them, and that isn't much, all has come to him through here say.

Beri is thrilled at being asked to take on the search and aks the inspector for any theories form past experiences that would be helpful to in their search.

Kyan, naturally, thinks it'll be a piece of cake. Why not?

The Inspector turns to the IA and looks a little worried.
The Inspector? Worried?

"I have no advice that is any different than what you are already well experienced with. If you make it you will be going where none of us have gone before. At least not done so and maintained our sanity.

Sesha, you ask for something that belonged to Socraterius. Believe me, we've tried what you are thinking of trying. Despite his insanity, he is very crafty an ingenious. A problem with crazy paranoid people is that they come up with a zillion ways to keep hidden, including scrying and even more powerful tracking magic.

As for how we think that you may succeed where everyone else has failed, we go back to Socraterius. Although it was not by any request of our own, then man, when he was sane, delved into the Teucri mysteries kept here in the Treasury.

We think he was close to discovering something real important but his obsession must have brought him to the edge of sanity and over down the backside. In a way, it would appear that it was a self-sacrifice, for where in his obsession he came to what he thought was a dead end, we thing we found something worth further investigation.

That's where you come in. You see, your choice to stay out of the Politics of Hook City by remaining neutral, that is, by not joining the City's Protector Association, or Mudtown, or any other group, we can honestly say that whatever you find out is the whole truth. Your motivations will not be for one thing or another but simply to find out the truth. As much as it is well known your affiliation with me, it is also widely known your attention to Mudtown and the common citizenry of Hook City, and certainly not for money, so no preferences will be suspected.

I can't tell you any details at the moment as it is dangerous to disclose our ideas, even here in my office. But as it may entail being gone for an indeterminate amount of time and to who-knows-where, you'll want a little time to prepare and to put any loose ends to order.

I've already arranged to have one of our best Protector squads reassinged to the Iron Square. They are trustworthy and are much the same in ideology as the IA, just not quite as experienced. But they'll do fine.

So take the day to set your affairs in order and come back tonight. I'll personally met you at the Shepherd's Pie gate at 11pm. User your best means of secrecy you have to get here, as I'm sure you are being watched at all times. Otherwise we could start right now. But our enemies know you came in here and they need to know you left. Hopefully the wards I had put on this room is enough to keep this conversation a secret even if they know you came here. That's why you'll need to exert extra caution when
returning tonight. The longer you have to study... without them suspecting anything, the better.

I don't know at the moment what I can offer you for your service, but it is probably best that way anyway, as there may not be much of Hook City left if things keep getting worse.

I can't order you to take this burden, maybe I wish I could, but our Seers' have seen that it was best this way, as volunteering to take on this quest will come from the Heart."

DM JT OOC: I'm going to have to make a big DM apology and bow my head in humbleness here.

I thought I was keeping up with Ian's posting but i went back little ways as some of your comments set a little bell going in the back of my mind. I found that on Sept 15 DM Ian already had this meeting with the Inspector and I just warped you back a day and did it all over again.

Having caught this early, let us just pretend the last two days of posting were just rehashing the purpose of meeting the Inspector and where you will be going.

The gist of it is that deep in the bowls of the Treasury is a Top Secret library dedicated to some of the earliest known objects and writing about the Teucri. It was the study and obsession of these things that Socraterius finally went mad over. The Inspector thinks that he came close to finding out the purpose, well, more so how to activate, the room with the Teucri mosaics and the three doors.

Up until now no one had seriously try delving into those Teucri mysteries except for Secraterius because there was no need. But now there is, and if Socraterius was so close, maybe a non-biased group should pick up where he left off.

For today's post, Inspector Auslander wants to know if the IA are ready to go. The IA will be sequestered for an undetermined period of time so as to keep the IA away from any more attacks and so they can put their undivided attention to the puzzle. Because of this the IA need all their important gear with them. Food will be provided.

If the IA are ready, the Inspector starts down the long labyrinthine path to the Secrete Teucri Library.

Every one seems content that they brought everything they usually bring when leaving the Iron Tower and Bosk makes sure all are made whole again.

With all preparations done, Inspector Auslander leads the group out of his office and down the hall. Sergeant Capon follows a ways but after navigating several floors he stops before going down another flight of steps.

"This is where I am not permitted to go any further. Best of luck and hope to see you soon."

Inspector Auslander tries to explain a little more as they go further down.

"Very few know of this place. Only the highest city officials, and me, the Head of Security, have ever even been close. That you are here isn't because I am sneaking you in, but it was discussed by the Powers that Be and approved. Socraterius was one of the rare officials to be allowed in to the vault for any amount of time.

He was such a genius on the subject of the Teucri that he was appointed Keeper. Perhaps that was a mistake, but that was all he could concentrate on and we thought 'If our normal, sane, sages can't figure it out, then maybe it takes a one that is not normal and sane.'

DM JT Note: he had what is called in our R.L. Asberger's Syndrome focused on all things Teucri.

"You asked if he kept notes. He probably did but we've found none. In his current state of mind, he probably destroyed them all. Fortunately we monitored the progress of insanity and bared him from the library before it was too late. But whatever he found, then, could be found again. We left everything untouched in hopes that the next one might have a clue as to where he was when... well, lost it?"

At this point they reach a rather plain door. Two mages stand waiting. They wear very rich robes. Both are up in years and their badges show the highest Hook City Official rankings anyone is aware of.

"Greetings, Sirs," the Inspector bows and shows utmost vehemence in his voice and actions. "These are the Iron Adventurers. The ones we talked about."

He turns to the IA. "No introductions here, as you may understand. These two will guide us through the protections. Down in the vault, either they or two others will be on watch at all times."

The Inspector nods at the two and the intricate spell passwords and gestures begin as they open the simple door and start down narrow stairs.

Your neck hairs stands on end as magic tingles all about. The darkness looses and wins as you go down, then through hallways, chambers, and more stairs. Only the most disciplined intellect would be able to keep up with the series of passwords and such that open and close the magical wards.

DM JT Note: although PCs stop at 20th level, NPCs don't.

Finally, now actually walking down a hallway carved out of the bedrock, they come to a set of double doors, both covered in Teucri runes.

"Oh-oh," comments one of the elder mages.

The other whispers to the Inspector, "The magical protections have been tampered with and are dampened. Someone has either been in and out, or is still in there."

The Inspector grimaces. "There are spies everywhere! Despite our best efforts to keep our plans a secret, someone sold us out!"

He turns to the IA, "Our friends will open the doors, but be aware that someone has already beaten us here. Whoever it is may be waiting for you, or maybe just trying to abscond with something we need. They may have already left. Either way be ready."

The two mages prepare to open the doors...

Assuming magical auras of greater than CL20, Tink squints her eyes to shield them from the overwhelming aura her arcane sight picks up. One can only hope such power is being used for good.

Before the mages open the doors, Tink takes a moment to prepare.

"I am about to cast a Telepathic Bond spell" she explains "however I am not powerful enough for it to affect everyone. After myself, I can then only bring four other people into the link. If the casters of us are connected in combat we can plan our spells accordingly so as not to interfere with each other. It also means we can communicate with Beri when he takes an elemental form. What's more, we also have other spells available - such as message - to relay information at any time to anyone not in the link."

"And then I was thinking, it would be useful for us to have access to information out here. What if Hook needs us back? What if something is happening back at the tower? What if we need to report our findings urgently? So for that reason, I was thinking it would be useful to include Inspector Auslander in the link"

With her explanation made, and if noonne disagrees, Tink casts Telepathic Bond and includes Sesha, Restlin, Beri, and Inspector Auslander in the link.

Finally she activates her ring of invisibility and stands perfectly still, hovering a few inches in the air in the shadows as she awaits the doors to open.

"Before we head in there, are there any magical protections we need to be aware of? If I try to summon something or teleport out, how likely is it to succeed?"

Restlin doesn't want to wait too long, but as a conjurer he feels it's important to know if he can...well, conjure anything.

communicate while in another form? That's the first piece of good news I've heard all day. I don't know what to expect inside, but my guess is it hasn't left yet. Who ever has been causing this has been known to leave a wake of destruction behind them... which is all the more reason to worry about what's behind the doors.

IN front of the doors, after it comes to light that someone else was entered he chuffs softly, mutter "Of course someone found out. Probably had to sign a stack of forms in triplicate to get us permission to be come down there ."

He pulls his bow out and readies an arrow.

Mission nearly, almost, probably Impossible (Co-DM JonathanT)
Wednesday October 15th, 2014 1:40:02 AM

As the two city officials prepare to open the doors, the IA start to prepare for what may, or may not be, inside.

Katinka tries her best to shield her eyes from the numerous powerful magical auras she encounters as they travel through the immense maze of what became the center of Hook City in all respects. Where all the doors go and what all the rooms do would take a volume of books to describe but somewhere, somehow, there is an intellect that understands all of this.

Having reached their final destination that may be their quarters for a while, if is discovered that someone or something has beaten them to it. Katinka senses apprehension from the three as they study the door and prepare to open it. She then casts Telepathic Bond to cover Sehsa, Beri, Restlin, and Inspector Auslander.

Then she goes invisible and with her Overland Flight, hovers a few inches in the air and in the shadows.

DM Note: Remember to start making Fly skill checks for hovering and such if/when combat rounds
start.

From her stealthly hidden invisible form in the dark shadows, she watches the mages confer and agree
that all the protective spells on the doors have been dampened. During this time, she had a chance to
get a good look at the Teucri runes but without some key, they mean nothing.

Resltin brings up a good point about possible magical protections inside the place.

Auslander assures the group that the insides of the library were kept free of such things because the
tendency of overly studious people tend to 'forget' about them. As far as conjuring something in there,
it should not be possible. However, if he needs to do so, that portion of the protective barriers can be
dampened.

Garret moves to the front and activates his Barkskin tattoo.

Beri is elated that with Katinka's spell he will be able to communicate while in elemental form. He suspects that there is indeed something to worry about still in the library.

Bosk makes mental check marks on his list of spells.

Kyan makes a snide remark about Hook City government red tape that does not go over well with
the Inspector. Few have seen the Inspector's gaze burn through one's soul and if Kyan hadn't been too
busy getting his bow ready, he might have been able to count himself one of that lucky few!

DM JT Note: on the map, I've not placed anyone anywhere but everyone is just outside the doors. When you move, just subtract 10' of movement from your total and that will take care of wherever you are outside
the doors.

Finally, with a push, the doors swing open.

The room is brightly lit with magical light globes on the walls. In the center of the beautiful Teucri mosaic
floor is a crude blood-red pentagram. In the middle of that pentagram is a monstrous creature of humongous proportions. It's back is to the doors but from this towering monstrosity four arms extrude from its torso. Two arms end in pincers and two in claws.

It appears to be receiving some instructions.

"Destroy everything Teucri in here! Leave nothing intact! Then you will be free. Wait! No! First kill THEM!"

If you understand Abyssal: Highlight to display spoiler: { Our agreement then changes. I'll require something else!}

"Very well. Just do it. No time to loose!"

The monstrosity turns to face the door, its eyes shining with intelligence and cruelty, all aimed at those at the door.

OOC: With a Fly check of +25, Tink can hover in anything up to a windstorm without failing the DC23 check, even on a Nat1. Even in a hurricane she can hover on a roll of 2 or more.
And from the map - is that monster holding a machine gun? If so, I call dibs! :)

Tink translates over the telepathic link: "The creature has just said in Abyssal 'Our agreement then changes. I'll require something else'. I'm not sure what that means but the 'kill them first' part doesn't sound good!"

The scouting part looks to be done. There is no way Tink is going in the room to deal with that guy. She's quite content to hover by the door and let the muscle in the group trade blows with that ... creature.

Tink begins the ritual to summon some creatures to aid what she perceives to be imminent combat (Cast Summon Monster VI. Summon 1D3 Bralani Azatas. D3=3. Sweet!. They shall appear next round near Tink)

Before the doors open, Restlin tries (and fails) to hold back a chuckle at Kyan's comments. He hopes Auslander doesn't notice.

Once that door opens...

"Auslander, Tink and I need to summon. It's what we do," Restlin telepathically states. The magepriest is heartened somewhat that this beast was told to kill them first, meaning it may not have destroyed a bunch of priceless Teucari artifacts already.

Grasping Shiny's hilt, he politely asks the blade to make him smarter (fox's cunning). He then takes another rotten egg from his belt pouch and tosses it high in the air towards this thing.

Free action: Ask Shiny to cast fox's cunning (+4 int)
Move action: none
Standard action: Cast stinking cloud centered on this...thing. I want to cast it high up in the air so that we can still fight around the critter w/o being affected by the cloud. Save DC is 21.

Garret pauses only a moment before charging full-speed directly at the creature. As he runs, he raises his fist in front of him. At the last moment, to avoid any possible claws, he slides on the ground, spins and kicks out at the center mass of the creature.

OOC:
Darn, I was going to call dibs on the machine gun! Guess I'll call for the fancy visor/helmet. :)

And too bad the thing is so large, that throws out all my combat maneuver things. Guess I'm stuck with regular attacks... this time!

Charge! (No, really, charge attack)

-2 to AC for this round, but +4 to AC for an AOO if the creature has reach or something like that (not included in header).

Hit AC: 33, Damage: 11 + Stunning Fist attempt: Fort save DC 21 or staggered 1d6+1 rounds.
