Fire and flames accost the Gnolls, and the stink of burning fur wafts through the battle. A couple of enemies fall to Camerons fireball, and others have painful burns showing on their hides.
Linden pauses to bless his allies.
Braugh moves forward to engage, while William drops a ball of fire on top of the enemy spellcaster. A startled yelp is cut short as Carver impales an unsuspecting foe.

It doesn't take much work to get the fire under control. Throughout the process, a close watch is kept on the building that the Gnolls escaped through, and it doesn't as much as budge.
A search of the buildings large enough for prisoners turns up 3 elves chained to a heavy anchor in the middle of the floor. They are not too physically harmed, only slight bruises, but they are emaciated and thin, suffering from obvious dehydration and lack of nourishment.
The Gnolls do not resist, though they do nervously glance at the smaller burning areas, which as Prudence discovers during her fire-watch, serve as kennels for numerous Hyenas!
Not all the the kennels are full, and none of the burning ones contain the beasts, but about 12 Hyenas in all are caged on the premises. (The small brown buildings that line the camp.)
(D100% chance = .. oh crap - 99) Another problem, however, quickly arises. A strange noise comes from Carver. The spores and fungal mounds on his armor are multiplying at an astounding rate, easily visible to the naked eye. Though he has easily resisted any ill effects from the fungus so far, it seems that the spores have finally caught up to him.
Even without much training in healing, Nikolai realizes that unless Carver seeks treatment immediately, it's possible he may die. Since Linden had earlier discovered that the fungus was treatable, just not in this environs, sending Carver away seems the best bet for now. It would also be a chance to spare the freed captives from any further misery...

Nikolai had felt the Fist very fortunate all along that Carver had the strength to fight whatever fungus growth this was but deep down inside he knew it was just a matter of time.
"We'll, the timing of that fungus could have been worse. At least we can justify splitting up the Fist more so now than before. These elves need a safe escort out and are certainly not capable to negotiate the Teleport Vines. Nor is it wise to send a sick one back on his own and endanger leaving the elves stranded. Cameron can scout and keep Carver and the elves from stumbling into a gnoll patrol.
So Carver and Cameron, your orders are to return to the Citadel with the elves. They can recover there and give whatever information they can to the Commander. Meanwhile, we will finish cleaning up here and see what we can get out of these gnolls. Whatever else we do will depend on what we find here.
So be off with you two, and may our paths cross again."
Nikolai introduces himself and the Fist to the three elves and informs them that two of their members will take them back to the Citadel, whence they can recover and then return home.
After his two friends leave he addresses the remainder of the Fist. "Our mission still remains the same. We'll just have to be more careful. Tinker, see what you can find out about that building those gnolls escaped to. Meanwhile, William, let's see what we can find out from these Gnolls."

NIkolai takes heed to Tinker's warning that there may be a warren in that hut. Certainly several fled there.
"Pru, please go with Tinker and be his backup. Have one of your fire spells ready so if he encounters problems you can blast that front door."
Nikolai then turns his attention to the captive gnolls and the interrogation. What to do with the hyenas can wait.
The departure of the hostages, Cameron, and Carver takes place too quickly for some. One second the old comrades are fighting through monstrous Gnolls, and within minutes it looks like Carver and Cameron will be removed for some time.
Saying quick goodbyes, the groups attention refocuses on the door.
Tinker checks the door carefully, and does not find any mechanical traps that might have been placed. A quick check reveals it to locked, and the door is warm to the touch.
William begins his interrogation. Two refuse to talk, though one seems to understand his position. His voice is deep, and his r's roll from his thoat in a growling undertone, wincing at any pain caused by Williams methods.
"You wish us to betray the pack. This brings death. You threaten death. Either way, death. I Ekidu, will betray the pack with a promise of life, a weapon, food, and water. Give to me these things and I will answer your questions. Kill these two if you wish."
From what you can tell there is nothing special about this Gnoll or his equipment. He seems to be outfitted like any other that you have seen in your brief skirmish.

"Our training didn't cover Field Trials but I don't think we would have any problem with the Commander if we executed them for crimes against Hornfowl and certainly the elves would want some justice too. Since we have one that Williams says is willing to bargain, I'm all for accepting his conditions.
My suggestion would be to use those two gnolls as our blood donors for our return. We have two jumps to make. If they survive both, then we can set them free. If they don't, well, fair is fair the elves would say."

But let's see what he says. Fact is, we can't truly verify anything he says that we haven't seen already. But without magic to force him to tell the truth... we use what we have."
Nikolai remembers some of the stories he heard about his dad, Alexi Komonov, from some of his dads old companions. The Fist Cavalryman had a way of swinging his flail casually around that made even the most stalwart prisoner wince. Nikolai didn't like those stories about his father, thinking they were a bit exaggerated, but now, he had second thoughts about that, and understood his father a bit better.
Ekidu watches his pack-mates led away and gives his best reassuring grin, a toothy affair that does not lend much friendliness to the Gnolls features.
" This is one of the southernmost Warren that the pack has made. You are not far from the place humans call the Sinking Lands and the Bay of Elenna. There are four other warrens in this swamp, and many many more to the north, in the swamps there. That is where we were birthed. We come here to raid and live, and there are too many of us in the northern swamps. A pack must eat and food is scarce there now."
He shrugs.
"That will not be a problem long. There are many pack masters here who grow tired of The Prophet. He did not foresee the loss in our last Great Hunt, the human place of Hornfowl, and we lost many warriors. If he dies, the tribes will fight and there will be death. If he is wrong again, we will have more death. If he is right, then we will not be challenged and will have more food than we can eat."
He looks again at the door, anxiously.
"There are five or six packs in the south at any time, and their shamans and pack leaders come with them. We bring some women, but no young. It is forbidden to raise pups in this swamp. We do not want them forgetting this is not their home. The Alpha Packlands are home."
He looks in the direction of his fellow captives.
"I have not been in the other warrens, only this one. Each pack only serves one warren. I only know their general directions from Toothcracker, our chief cave in the center this swamp. The other warrens are west, east, and east then south."
Still looking at the other two Gnolls, he adds.
"You must kill them. If they give The Prophet my name, I will have death in mountains upon my den and my young will be flayed and eaten before they can continue my line."
He looks at Prudence.
"I know you, fire-witch. I was at Hornfowl. I saw you cook and stand down the Alpha Hyenas. None of these others were there. This alone is why I offer wisdom for my life. I will not make further enemies of your lot, shaman."
Ekidu waits, shuffling his feet nervously.

Nikolai notices how the gnoll eyes the hut anxiously and how he eyes the other two. With William's translation, the Thumb can make some decisions.
Second Perc + 11 = 20
First Nikolai goes over to Tinker, Pru, and Bruagh. In case the gnoll can understand common, he whispers to them. "In case you didn't notice, Mr. Ekido here is nervous about this hut. His shaman ran into here and he fears the life of his family if the shaman survives.
Of course, it is also part of out job to investigate all we can, which means this hut, since most warrens probably follow the same pattern to some degree. So let's get this thing opened and flush those survivors out.
Oh, and Pru, look mean. Don't look so nervous. Start practicing a mean scowl or something. You gotta let them know you beat them and you are tougher than they," Nikolai grins.
He then turns back to William and Linden. "Ok. William, assure Ekido that we will honor our bargain. Then we will make sure they are secure and gagged. We'll put each one in one of these huts to keep them all separated. Once that's done, we crack open that hut. Got it? Good. Let's get moving."
Nikolai helps make sure the bonds gags are tight, then helps put each on in a separate hut.
"Pru, do you have a spare Mage Armor spell? If not, that's ok."
Once everyone is ready he loads his crossbow.
While tinker works the door, Bruagh, Nikolai, and Linden stand 30' in front of it with missile weapons at the ready while Pru and William stand behind those three with spells ready.

The Ekidu reassured and his fellow led away, the Gnoll seems satisfied. He stops his caretakers for a moment and calls to William.
"You have done Ekidu great service. I will make our payments even. Beware our shaman. He has great affinity for burning and fire. He makes traps with it. He kills with it. Our packmasters weapons are enchanted with it. If you can protect from it, you should."
He levels his gaze on Pru, and speaks in broken common.
"I wish I could see the air burn between the two of you. The fire will make a pyre worthy of the Great Hunger. Death shall be had for many. I hope that it is glorious for all. Be well."
With that Ekidu is led away.
Tinker, not so much worried about the temperature of the door as he was the lock, easily removes the mechanism holding it closed. As he does, he can feel the air being sucked from around him through the cracks of the portal, and can hear the resulting "whoooosh" before a ball of fire crashes the door into splinters. With the door out of the way, it isnt much trouble to move up and examine the insides of the room. Strangely enough, the large majority of its furnishings are Dwarven in nature, and detail survival techniques in a swampy biome. There are a few other knick-nacks of no great value... a charred clock with Dwarven numerals, a stone carving of a wyvern, and a number of other burned and broken keepsakes. Nikolai does not let out any sign that he is glad they are all in agreement to refrain from going down the hole and to start wrapping up this mission. There are a few loose ends that need tying up though.
"Ok, then let's tie up some loose ends and get out of here. I need Bruagh and Linden to start gathering up dry wood to dump down that hole. I want to fill that hole with with dry wood then light it. That will keep the gnolls from following us for a while, I hope. They may have another exit, if they are smart, but, oh well.
I need Tinker and myself to dispatch the hyenas. I don't want them used against us on anyone else.
Pru and William, search the camp for valuables and equipment. We keep what we can use and dump whatever we can't into the wood pile down the hole.
Next, I'd prefer to use a Sleep spell on Ekido but if we must, Tinker can bonk his head. We place him far enough away from camp so he doesn't get burned. We do this out of sight of the others. Tinker can take some soot and smear it no Ekido.
Then we take the other two and let them watch us set their camp on fire. We start by setting the hole on fire, then Pru can waltz up and down the camp zapping whatever can burn.
They need to think a huge army tromped through here. Then we move out. We take the other two, bound and gagged to the teleport vines and use their blood to get back to the main warren. We'll look to see if we can see any smoke, mark that on our map, then move on to the next teleport area and repeat the process.
I'll not contact HQ until we get to the horses or if we get cut off.
That's the plan, let's do it," he tries to smile.

Nikolais orders are clear and precise, and presumably his Fist carries them out flawlessly. Ekidu is amenable, and doesn't even resist any spellcasting.
When the cage is open, the first Hyena growls menacingly but refuses to exit his cage. He urinates briefly, then bares his teeth but doesn't budge. Yips and shouts draw barks and growls from the animal.
Flaming items are tossed down the hole, but no real tell other than startled yelps of surprise hint at its effect. Looting the camp finds a large surplus of usable dried meats and waterskins, and much equipment of mundane nature. (Any armors Scale or lower can be found, as well as javelins, spears, axes, and heavy maces.)
With a bit of time, the travel to the last Blood Root, as Ekidu named the plant, is complete. It is here you now have the chance to use the other captured Gnolls if that is still the plan. Knowing how the process works, and your relative location, the only thing you don't know is if someone is waiting for you on the other side....

Thankfully, it seems the team needed to move out, and soon a sooty, bloody, muddy dwarf arrives at the Blood Cypress with the Fist.
Tinker waits for the team to gather. He befits his Urgosh and opens a vien. "Time to be ready!"

Nikolai has no success in trying to befriend the animal but to be fair to Tinker, he tries to befriend each hyena.
OOC: I don't know how many there are, but here goes some. Just look at the header. None were N20's)
Having done his best to befriend any of the hyenas and failing, he executes them so they won't be used to track the Fist's scent down later.
We can't carry all this armor and weapons and since none are magical, thrown what you don't want yourself down that hole and hope that furnace will ruin it. Whatever boards from these pens we can pry loose and toss down there goes too. Canvas, clothes, anything that burns that we aren't taking with us."
Nikolai does hate eliminating the hyenas but the safety of the Fist comes first. He thanks everyone for their hard work and is glad Linden thought to check the quality of the dry meat.
"We certainly use these extra provisions, but we do need to make sure it is fit for consumption. Thanks for checking."
When the pile of flammable materials down the hole and ignited, they ignite the rest of the camp and tow the two prisoners away.
Going as stealthy as they can, they reach the first Blood Root.
"Everyone gather here and let's put this place behind us. As the Thumb, I'll take responsibility of cutting the gnoll."
Once everyone is in position, he tosses a coin, in front of the two gnolls, to decide which one is first. It is 'heads' so he takes the one to his right. He leads the gnoll to the vine and makes a deep cut at the wrist. To keep his feelings from getting in the way, he pictures the gnoll fight at Hornfowl and how those gnolls cut their Fist up and hurt Pru pretty bad.
"Be ready. We don't know what's on the other side," he cautions. Blood is spilled and holds the wrist there until they all are teleported away.

"It is very tempting to go check out that other Blood Root. I don't know. Good idea, Tinker, to report back now. I had thought we'd report back once we reached the horses. But that's a long ways away. At least we can know if we've gotten enough for the Mailed Fist to go on or need more. If Commander Constance wants us to check out the other Blood Root, we go.
However, first let's get out of sight and get some rest."

Once the scroll is activated and contact with Commander Constance is made, he begins his report. "We've not had a chance to verify all locations, but we had to send Carver and Cameron back with some elves we liberated. [OOC: For the casters, it is not a UMD check, it is a caster level check. For Linden, it is a 4th-level spell, requiring a 7th-level caster. The DC to activate the scroll is 5 + caster level, or in Linden's case, 12. For William and Prudence, it is a 5th-level spell. For William, that requires a 9th-level caster, making William's DC 14. But Pru is a sorcerer, and sorcerers get spells more slowly. A sorcerer can't cast a 5th-level spell until 10th level, so Pru's DC is 15. I'm happy to try, but Pru has literally the toughest caster-level check of the three, and there is a potential for things to go horribly wrong on a failed check. 'Verify locations of all five warrens. Casualties understood. Reinforcements deployed. Captive lieutenant preferred but not mandatory. Hang in there. Constance.'
He plays this over and over again and by morning makes up his mind.
"I've come to the conclusion that we need to continue our scouting before looking for any reinforcements. We are here, now, and it would take anywhere from two days to a week to get to this spot. That's a lot of lost time. Enough time for the gnolls to prepare. It may even be too late now, but we must make hast to verify these other warrens. We leave as soon as camp is picked up.
Ekido said 'The other warrens are west, east, and east then south.'
We've been to the south and this one here is the middle. We head west today. That way, when we head east, we'll be closer to our Blood Root out of here.
Any questions?
Tinker, you lead the front as Head Scout again, we'll follow some 50' feet behind."
Nikolai helps clean up camp to keep it looking like it has been used recently (Survival +8 = 10!) and then, with the prisoner bound except for his feet, leads the troops out, behind Tinker.
The question of reinforcements is a good one? It's known that the Fist has several powerful mages in its service. It's also notoriously frivolous.

While Prudence unmerrily slogs, the panicked Gnoll struggles against his bonds some more. As Nikolai manages to activate the plant once more, the Gnoll manages to free his hands and yank the gag from his mouth.

With all in agreement, Nikolai motions for Tinker to move on and lead the way around to the other side of the burned out area so that the watch towers end up on the far side of the clearing. He hopes there's not another set of watchtowers, but that's why they are scouting.
Trying to stay hidden as much as possible...

Gnoll tracks cover the ground, heading both to and from the circle. Nikolais theory about the dome is sound, and as they inch closer to the dome, careful to keep as many trees between them and the watch-towers, they are sure the humanoids manning them are more Gnolls.
The defenders are lax, and none seem to notice the creeping mercenaries.
As you close distance with the dome, the plants here are thick and large. All seem overgrown, and vibrantly colored and healthy. Only a few hundred feet from the outer edge of the circle of trees, you are just finally able to see within.
A large community of tree-houses is set up here, the lowest of which would require a straight climb up the side of the thin cypress and other swamp fauna of at least 15 feet. All of the trunks have been stripped of branches.
It seems likely that more watch towers would dot the circumference of the grove. Looking hopefully for friendlies, your heart sinks as you make note of a few Gnolls sitting and talking in their own language on a laddered bridge in front of you.
All in all the camp seems larger than the previous two outlying bases, much of which seemed obscured under ground. It is impossible to compare with the main warren, of which you only saw a large open-mouthed cave.

What now? Thinks the cleric.
Linden moves along trying not to make too much noise. (Do you want a stealth check from the centaur?)

Pru can't hide her disappointment.
"Well," she says, "I suppose there's no reason a gnoll couldn't be a druid."

William follows the others quietly, and at the sound of gnoll voices, tries to discern what they're saying or at least get the gist of their conversation... Ling = 30 (Natural 20)

Nikolai is not just disappointed, but fairly fearful as well. Fearful for his Fist!
He whispers, "Uhm... Expeditious Retreat? Anyone?" he tries to grin.
"Oops. This isn't quite the 'grove' I was expecting. Explains all the gnoll tracks. Time to get scarce. Quietly turn around and let's get to those trees."
He leads, or tries to lead, the Fist quietly back to the line of trees.

Tinker agrees. Time to bug out. When the group gets fR enough away to be able to breathe easy, the dwarf speculates on what it means. "The other warren was a dwarf mine the gnolls took over. No reason to think this was an elf village. The gnolls just seem to be scavengers, using what they can steal or kill. "
"I don't want to use the Blood Cypress this time either. Didn't like the way the gnoll howled before we teleported. Probably a trap is waiting for us. "

OOC. Checking
Nikolais Fist decides that retreat is the best option. With the location marked on their map and recorded, as well as general notes about the camp itself, they stalk away from the malevolent grove and its inhabitants.
William strains to hear bits of the Gnoll conversation, and it seems to revolve around food and mating, both of which seem to be high up in Gnoll priority.
Tinker raises a good point as the Fist retreats.
"What about that howl when we left?"
Does the Fist use the Bloodroot to teleport back? Or do they slog the long trek back from whence they came?
Nikolai (JonathanT) AC 16 Tch 16 Ffted 13 HP 38/38 CMD 20/22(Grapple) d20+11=31 ; d20+9=22 ; d20+8=24 ; Monday November 3rd, 2014 4:08:59 PM "Considering that any force the Mailed Fist sends this way, if they do, won't use the Blood Root to get around, it would be a good idea to make the next trips the hard way and know what to expect on these trails, whether the gnoll howled or not. But I would suggest any force that comes here to bring herd of pigs or some cows. That way they've got meat to eat as well as a transportation sacrifice."
Thus plans are made to return to the center using the path instead of the Blood Root. Tinker takes the front scout again, followed by Nikolai and the rest. When it comes time to look for a campsite, it's another fire-less night, and hopefully a dry one.

Pru is relieved to hear that they won't be taking on the gnoll camp, and a little discouraged at the prospect of more slogging through the swamp.
"You'd think I'd get used to it," she murmurs, "but not so far."

Tinker actually smiles, thinking about how miserable everyone will be together slogging through the swamp. "Let's get started ".
The dwarf takes the lead, setting the pace through the swamp and being on the lookout for dangers.

William is frustrated that no useful Intel was gained but agrees that the long path would be best in this case. He takes his usual spot in the middle near Pru and is watchful as usual.

Flint takes point and with Nikolais guidance, a suitable campsite is found. As the sun melts away overhead, the buzz of swamplife fills the evening.
Though you have traveled far from the completely burned away section of swamp, there are signs that the Druids flames have reached as far as even your camp site.
As everyone begins to wind down and settle in for the night, before the first watch is set, Tinker hears something strange. Nikolai hears it too. Yips, grunts, and barks soon set themselves apart from the evening sounds of the dense swamp. The occasional splash and whistle hint that the sounds are coming closer, and moving steadily in your direction.
You figure there is maybe 100 yards between your party and the source of the noise.

Tinker limbers up his crossbow and makes sure his Urgosh is ready. "There's that fallen tree we can put our backs against, but looks like you were right, shoulda killed the hyenas. Hope I take many of them out first!"
When Tinker is ready, he casts a minor magic, making him fleeter of foot.

Tinker, take the top of the log and keep anything from coming from the other side. Linden and I can take this side of the log while Pru and William stay between us and the log. I don't want them flanked, they need to be able to cast spells freely."
Nikolai retrieves two items, holding one in each hand. In one he holds a Thunderstone and in the other a Tanglefoot bag.
Pru, if you have a spare Mage Armor, I could use it. If not, no problem."
William the Courageous (Ken) AC 18 hp 23/23 Wednesday November 5th, 2014 9:27:58 AM
William goes to the spot where Nikolai directs and after kneeling to take cover behind a log, casts Mage Armor. To Pru, he says, "if they are bunched up, I can cast Web to keep several in place and can you fry them when they are stuck? "
