Gargul's Foul Mood

DM RobC - Ready to raise the dead?
Tuesday November 18th, 2014 6:12:28 AM

It finally dawns on Aexana. She has died. There was a great battle and she fell. She fell hard. But ... why hasn't Gargul seen fit to send her soul to the Lands of Rest? Is she to be judged? Has she been judged unworthy and must now spend eternity on her own? Death is truly mysterious.

-----------------------------

Zeoll is unsure. It is a spell that he will come to learn in time, but it may be beyond his abilities to cast now from a scroll. Self-doubt and a lack of confidence may not see an adventurer live long in the Wold. Perhaps journeying with the crew of the Lionfish may help the old taur rediscover his resolve.

Terser voices his confidence in Zeoll, willing to accept whatever magical mishap may happen.

Magana too urges the group to proceed without fear. It is her belief that it would be what Gargul would want.

Jozhur rejoins the group, and he and Coer are also in agreement. Aexana must be returned to the group sooner rather than later.

As a group, the party are willing to risk confronting Gargul and pleading the case for Aexana's return. But what could they possibly have to offer in return?

Snafu has other plans. He and Mojo only just met this group. Sure, they saved his life, but meeting a God to help one of them may be stretching this new friendship.

-----------------------------
OOC: Folks, if you go ahead with the Raise Dead spell, the next post will be made by a special guest DM :)

Bowing to his friends, Zeoll sighs and prays for success.

He has everyone gather in a circle around Aexana's body. He takes a scroll and does his best to read it.

1d20+6 vs DC10 ... a 21

Zeoll feels the magic take hold, and the spell is cast ...

(StevenVdB) Aexana DEAD
Tuesday November 18th, 2014 8:12:55 AM

"Mother... Father... If I have wronged you or have not completed my journey in such way that I am unfit to travel to the Lands of Rest please forgive me... "

A single tear rolls down Aex's cheek. It falls in slow motion... Aex follows the drop but just as it is about to drop on the hard soil she opens her tiny hands to catch it...

Snafu studied his makeshift guard tower, which he had quickly converted from one of the beaten up buildings that still remained standing. He had rigged a rope for a quick escape, or for a quick climb for his friends below. Overall, it wasn't perfect but it would have to do.

Meanwhile Mojo buzzed overhead. "I've always wanted to meet Gargul, though I've heard he's a tad bit serious. Not the type of fellow you'd want to have at a tea party."

"If we have another wave of attacks you may meet him sooner than you think" Snafu replied. "Keep your eyes peeled. And put away that pipe!"

Mojo flew off, re-establishing the perimeter, which made Snafu feel confident enough to only keep one eye on the horizon. The other nervously watched the summoning of a God.

Magana adds her prayer to the ritual.

"Gargul, Lord of Life and Death, hear our plea. Our comrade, Aexana, has begun her journey beyond this life, but we believe her tasks are not done here. Please return her to us so that we may continue our fight with Biloopl better prepared. We, as all creatures under the sun, bow to your will as Guardian of the Gates of Life and Death, and wish for you only to consider our request in the light of the greater good of the Wold."

You Picked the Wrong Day to Do This [DM Jerry]
Wednesday November 19th, 2014 12:21:45 AM

Without warning or fanfare, the party is transported. No fancy journey through the Shadowlands this time.

Snafu, intending to stay behind, finds that he too has made the trip.

An imp, races forward. "Names please? I want to remember all those the big guy sends to the Estates of Unrest this night. You picked the wrong day to do this."

Without actually waiting for anyone to give their names, he nods and writes on a long scroll. "Yep, Zeoll, you should have waited. Not the best of days."

Gimp the Imp is sweating. A sweating imp is not the most pleasant of things. Who knew they could sweat? It rather stinks.....

Turning towards the dust mephit travelling with the party, he laughs bitterly.

"Can't have that."

He snaps his fingers and suddenly the outsider is inside a cage on wheels. The cage follows Snafu wherever he goes.

------

Meanwhile, there is an amphitheater ahead. Gargul's throneroom. One singular throne is up against the back of the roofed area. It is as huge, black as adamantite, and angular--as you would expect. Sitting on it is Gargul. Dark skinned and wearing travelling clothes. He sits straight up on the edge of the throne.

Before the throne is a dragon. Black with a bit of blue on the tips of the wings. The dragon speaks bowing, but you cannot hear the words he says.

Gargul says, "You speak foolishness Seethe! I care not that your mate was just acting as a dragon, though I agree with you. You still ran from battle when your NATION was beset by plague and Sahuagin attack. Ragga convinced you and you heeded her words. You had the cure which could have been replicated and shared with others. YOU were the way out for the Dragon Nation! YOU were their only hope after Marteaus' master stroke!

He pauses for effect. A palpable fear overcomes all within the presence of the God of Life and Death.

Then a second black dragon is brought forward in chains. Female, though you have no idea how you can tell. Her head is held low as if she knows her fate before it is pronounced.

I deny the request to return your mate, Ragga to life. Beyond that, Seethe, you used a holy druid site to cast your Reincarnate spell to come before me, when you knew there was a shrine to me nearby. You simply had to do it your way, even though you wish a boon from the GOD OF LIFE AND DEATH.

Therefore, I take your soul as well. May you suffer in separation! Ragga will be sentenced to Fae Skiemir where she will see more gold than she can dream of only to have others constantly take it from her. She will learn to control her greed or repeatedly die from it.

You are sentenced to the darkest Duergar tunnels of the Estates of Unrest where you will be slave to the The Teachers until you learn respect and honor for your fellow dragons.

BEGONE!

The voice echoes through the land. Strange that you hear it in every language you know at the same time. Quite overwhelming.

With a loud shriek from both dragons, they are physically removed from the throne by a small army of Minotaurs. As they recede from the throne, they fade and disappear.

Gargul slumps on his throne, obviously in a morose mood. You wonder what is bothering him.

Gimp stands near the party. He glances over at his master every few seconds as if hoping that he doesn't have to go closer.

Magana (Craig) [HP 54 of 81] [DR 1/-]
Wednesday November 19th, 2014 1:56:37 AM

Magana addresses the imp. "Why is today a 'bad day'?" she asks. Despite the fearful aura, Magana is overjoyed to be in the presence of her diety. She has a sense of belonging that she has not felt since leaving Taur Isle, although she is not sure why that would be so.

She is drawn to him, and has to take firm control of her legs to keep from moving toward him involuntarily. "Why?" she asks again, unable to take her eyes from his face.

Coer looks around, taking in Gargul's realm. He has been here once before however was blind at the time.

After the dragons are judged and removed he turns to Gimp. "Do we approach him, or will he call us when he is ready".

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC18 - HP 45 of 45)
Wednesday November 19th, 2014 6:52:33 AM

Zeoll bows before the sweating creature. "Thank you, Excellent Gimp, forr yourr guidance and yourr warrning. I, Zeoll, am most grrateful." The old liontaur has never managed to smooth the burr out of his accent, and his words are twisted as ever by it.

A moment later, he sighs. The imp specifically asked his friends for their names, and so far three have failed this simple test. Zeoll swishes his tail in frustration and fear. He tries to hide those emotions, and again addresses the servant of Gargul.

"Please, Gimp, allow me to prresent my frriends. This is Snafu, a most worrthy illusionist of rrecent acquaintance. Magana, loyal to yourr lorrd, and a steadfast comrrade in arms. And Coerratorr, Captain of the Lionfish and of ourr company."

He glares at Sam, Terser, and Jozhur, trying through mental force to make them introduce themselves.

Time passes oddly, as he recalls from the years that he once spent dead in the Lands of Rest. Then suddenly the group is near to the great god of life and death himself. Zeoll listens to the god address the dragon, and he gasps. The great epidemic that plagued the Dragon Nation could have been averted? A black dragon named Sethe could have prevented, or at least mitigated, the premature death of so many of his kind? Could have saved his people, but chose not to?

"Wowsy," thinks Zeoll. The word is the most gentle expletive used by liontaurs, commonly spoken only by children, but in the presence of this god, he dares not even think of the more salty lingo he has heard sailing in pirate waters. "This is remarkable news. No wonder the god is not pleased."

Hearing that Magana does not understand, the old liontaur leans close and explains in the quietest whisper to her a possible reason for the god's wrath. "Some years ago, yet within my own living memory, the god of disease destrroyed the Drragon Nation of Drragon Bay, which lies just east of New Elenna and Plateau City. Rrecall that yourr lorrd was the Firrst Fatherr of all drragonkind, long long ago. So the god of life and death perrhaps saw this as an intrrusion on his dominion, his dominion as god of death, and his dominion as the makerr of drragonkind."

"And this one drragon could have prrevented those unecessarry and prrematurre deaths! But, purrsuaded by his mate, Rragga, he chose not to. Now he comes beforre Lorrd Garrgul to ask a boon. Those ancient and potent drraconic lives, untimely rripped frrom the morrtal Wold, I guess, may help to explain the god's wrrath. Not to mention the sheerr nerrve this Sethe shows in making such a bold rrequest."

Zeoll waits patiently for Gimp to signal the party to approach.

Hmmph. It's a bit different being on this side of the throne. And there are none of the nicer gods to play good constable either.

Good day, Gimp. I am Terser, and have made the Lord Gargul's acquaintance before. I only hope I have not given him cause to regret returning me to the mortal lands. Perhaps the news we bring today will please him, despite the request that comes with it.

(StevenVdB) Aexana DEAD
Wednesday November 19th, 2014 5:43:05 PM

Suddenly Aex no longer is in the forest all by herself... she finds herself in this magnificent amfitheater. As she understands the situation the dragon Seeth came to petition for Ragga's return to Lord Gargul which has apparently gone dreadfully wrong...

Then she notices her friends on the far range of the amfitheater...

"Oh Lord... I'm the one that died... and my friends are about to petition for my return!! What have I done to deserve such!" Aex softly says to no one but herself and not knowing if she's within hearing distance from Lord Gargul... " it was my own stupidity to fly so high... I saved my healing powers for my friends but it was my own fault to think those seaspawn could not hit me..."

Utter Loss [DM Jerry]
Wednesday November 19th, 2014 8:57:50 PM

Gimp, snarls as Magana bring his mind back to attention. He mumbles, "That was stupid. Can't let myself be distracted." He quickly writes all the names of the group on his scroll.

He turns to her and whispers, his voice pitched to the group. "Well you deserve to know. You'll figure it out anyway being a devotee of the master."

He pauses as if the comments of the group are arriving in his brain with a delay. "This is making me look silly. His emotions are affecting my thoughts."

Turning to Zeoll, he says, "It's not about the dragons, though they sure made him more angry." Gimp is obviously not acting as Zeoll has seen him behave in the past.

He returns to Magana. "This is the anniversary of his utter loss to Alemi, Domi, and the House of Oshirr. This is when they destroyed his dragon vats, his power base, his plans to rule all in the First Age.

Turning to Coerator, "No, we wait a hundred years if we have to. Time has less meaning here. We wait on him.

To Terser he says, "Be careful if you plan on surprising him with anything today. Most days, he'll pretend he doesn't know what you're going to say. Today, he's not likely to play that game."

"Oh no! Stop!!"

Gimp runs forward as series of loud popping sounds fill the air like a 1000 firecrackers going off. He stops going rigid.

Appearing and filling the entire amphitheatre are....flowers. White Lillies. Everywhere. Mocking feminine laughter fills the sky as a final object appears: a funeral wreath with a sash like a beauty queen would wear. The wreath says, "Rest in peace." The sash says, "Happy Anniversary."

Gargul jumps to his feet and literally ROARS! Fire and live hot coals rain from the top of the amphitheater, filling the throne room with heat, red light, and smoke hotter than a blast furnace. One guesses that the "gifts" are being consumed.

The only thing that can be seen is the face of Gargul, now grown to enormous size and demon red. The rest of him looks charred and blackened by his own fury.

"Caeroldra! Damn you! You will pay for this! Do you really want to restart the war!!! Do not forget that I know your part in all that happened THAT day AND during the Year of Ascension when you turned against the bearer of your children!"

Gimp whispers, "Note to self. Count the years until Gargul raises another follower of Caeroldra."

It is amazing that on a greater scale, it seems the gods have some of the same problems as mortals.

Magana can resist His presence no longer. She calmly walks toward her Lord Gargul and kneels a respectful distance away. She has no concerns for her well-being, knowing that Gargul will take, or spare, her life as He sees fit, and that she will be content with whatever decision he makes.

She says nothing and just watches His tirade, understanding the need to vent a rage all too well. She is prepared to wait indefinitely upon His consideration.

Sam remains on his knees before the mighty Gargul. He doesn't speak a word. He knows that the God knows why they are there. He waits to respond only if required to do so. As he stays in position staring at the ground, he wonders what part of him is actually there. He feels the ground and hears the commotion and conversations, but entertains the thought that his actual body could just be back in the hut with Aexanna's. After entertaining the idea, he shrugs his shoulders in his mind and continues to wait.

"I hope no one gets on his bad side."

Normally he would berate the bully, puncture the pompous, and admonish the autocrat, but this was a God. The rules of mortals did not apply here. 'We are but leaves blowing in his wind. Only he knows where we will go and how we will get there. No sense in pushing the river.' He thought,

And so he continued observing and waiting.

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC18 - HP 45 of 45)
Thursday November 20th, 2014 6:59:50 PM

Zeoll thinks back to mistakes he made in the past, defeats suffered, enemies confronted. Those painful memories are almost as fresh now as they were then. He can only imagine that a god with perfect memory might still feel the hurts of ages gone by as if they were still brand new.

Zeoll wishes he could do something to help Gargul. When he was younger (and bolder), and his voice was better, he might have sung. Music performed properly can ease the heart. But his age-ravaged singing voice would now more likely make things worse. Maybe he should take up an instrument ...

Well, he can't let Magana advance alone. Zeoll the Cradled Seer steps forward, ending move a half a step behind Magana, standing at parade rest, respectfully waiting.

Who ARE You Guys [DM Jerry]
Thursday November 20th, 2014 8:46:28 PM

Gimp turns to Jozhur, but is distracted. "Bad timing...Yes. Bad."

Turning to Coerater, Gimp says, "He'll be fine. He's dead. Sure it will hurt, but he won't die of..."

Gimp smiles at Sam's solution--simply bow. But then Gargul doesn't like suckups much either. Still, not a bad move on this day.

Looking afar, he says, "Hey Magana, there he is! See Aexana! Over to the left of the throne in the wings with the other dead folks.

Then he whips around. "What? Is she insane?"

Gimp stares in horror as Magana steps forward. "The god of life and death is burning his own throne room and she..."

His mouth hangs open.

As Magana walks forward, the smoke continues to billow ahead of her as the entire throne room has turned into a furnace. All now that can be seen of the god are his giant red eyes.

All the court and other petitioners run trying to avoid the extreme heat and the obvious danger. They glare at her in disbelief as she calmly walks forward. Then Zeoll follows her. Supporting. Sticking with a friend.

Gimp, looks at the group strangely unbelieving. "Who ARE you guys? No one has approached with such confidence since...since the Gold Dragons."

The wild eyes of the god whirl with hatred, showing glimpses of his old self. Then they slowly still and bore straight ahead at Magana. Stares.

The inferno divides like Moses dividing the Red Sea. Flames rising on each side, but clear in the center leading up to the throne.

"COME!"

Magana winces slightly. Gargul's stare seems to penetrate her soul and she can't help but recall every single instance in her life when she might not have lived up to His expectations. Still she kneels, silent, awaiting His judgement and her fate.

After what seems an eternity, she hears His simple command and she rises, following obediently along the path He has made through the flames

Why Are You Here? [DM Jerry]
Saturday November 22nd, 2014 1:18:22 PM

The party approaches the throne, each in their own way. Gargul obviously notes this.

He notes Coerator's slight bow and his chopped words.
He notes Terser's "following" after the others looking at things from a dwarven point of view.
He agrees with Jozhur after a fashion and notes his proclivity to stand with Terser.
He notes Sam also following and going to his knees.

But most of all, he notes the exultation of Aexana and how she cares, no loves the others.

With a wave of his hand, all signs of the inferno is gone, except for the blackening of the walls and floor. Gargul stands before you, muscled legs standing like like the proverbial oak. Smoke still rising off of him. His scowl tells all.

"Magana, you will not die this day. You are faithful. Faithful doesn't mean perfect. Your heart is in the right places." Gargul nods approval.

"Aexana join us."

He then turns to the others. "You have come for your comrade. But that is not enough."

"STAND!"

He looks at each adventurer in turn. Peers into their minds and souls.

His eyes settle on Coerator, but his voice speaks to all as it bellows:

"WHY ARE YOU HERE?"

It is obvious he is not after the easy answer.

When Gargul addresses them, Magana feels compelled to respond, and she does so without pause or even considering her words.

"We need her, My Lord. As You know, I've lost comrades in arms before. I've mourned their loss and celebrated their life and moved on as is appropriate. I would do the same with Aexana if not for the danger we, and the Wold, face.

"We have encountered Biloopl's forces, and each encounter has been more deadly than the last. I fear that the loss of even one of our members might tip the scales in Biloopl's favor, at least in respect to our little group.

"We seek Your wisdom. If is Your will that Aexana's passing serves your purposes, I will accept that and continue the fight in Your name. If you demand a price, I ..." she glances at the others, "... or we will pay it."

When the smaller taur has finished speaking Coer takes a breath and speaks carefully. He is not much of a talker and he does not wish to anger the god with a slip of the tongue

"Magana speaks like the warrior and Hero she is. She wants you to return Aexana to us so we can continue against the forces of Biloopl. She is not wrong. We would be much stronger with Aexana by our side.

That is not why I have come. I am Captain of the Lionfish - my home. Those who sail with me and fight by my side are my family and I protect them as such. This is why I have come. I failed to protect Aexana and I seek another chance to do so."

Aexana humbly joins her friends at Lord Gargul's command. The tiny Gnome stand between Magana and Coer who both tower above her and bows deep to the Lord of Life and Death...

"Lord Gargul... When I left my little herb shop in the care of my daughter's hands it was because I was curious... Curious to learn more about the Wold. I wanted to see the Taur lands by my own eyes to learn if this race of Taurs was to be considered human or animal...

However...I had not expected to find friends so dear... They are as close to me as family...

Now it is my deepest which to see my friends safely through battle. With the rise of the false deity Billoopl I fear the Wold needs strong and loyal warriors who are willingly putting their lives in front of others. Not reckless nor careless... But wise and strong with the guidance of the Gods...

As for my role?

My sole ambition is to see them safely through battle. To bend the strength of nature to their advantage... to bottle the power of plants for their safety and to harness the terror of wind and lightning to help destroy the enemies of the Wold...

Lord, I have had a full life and will not travel the Lands of Rest with regret if it is your will I go there. But perhaps my journey is not over yet... for as long as the crew of the Lionfish rightiously fights evil... I whish to be at their side... "

HOW DARE! [DM Jerry]
Monday November 24th, 2014 7:44:00 PM

Gargul grunts. "The same drivel every time. I love him. I care for him. We need him. We can do more good with him. Please raise him. It would be the only decent thing to do! BAH!

"Though some of you began to go deeper."

He nods to Terser.

"Think! I know what you want. You want me to grant life to Aexana. But it doesn't answer the question of why you are here...

A voice interrupts...LOUDLY. A mighty one that is obviously trying to demonstrate his power and importance.

"GARGUL! THIS GROUP FOUGHT HEROICALLY AND WELL. THEY STOOD UP TO THE FORCES OF BILOOPL. WHAT THEY DID AND WILL DO IN MY REALMS WILL BE LONG REMEMBERED. RAISE THEIR FRIEND. IT IS THE...

Gargul, with a swipe of his hand ends the voice. "SILENCE, GA'AL! IF I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU I'LL BEAT IT OUT OF YOU!"

He pauses to get himself under control.

Softly, but with power, he continues. "This is my realm. My responsibility. Eavesdrop on this location again and your precious Sahuagin will be granted no Sparks of Life--no babies. Stillborn all!"

Ga'al replies, "BUT...."

Gargul interrupts, "IT IS OBVIOUS THAT YOU FEAR THIS UPSTART BILLOPL OR YOU WOULD HAVE DEALT WITH IT YOURSELF. YOU PLAY A DANGEROUS GAME WITH IT. YOU MIGHT FAIL...AGAIN. IF YOU FAIL YOUR TEST ANOTHER TIME, DO YOU THINK MARTEUS WILL ACCEPT YOUR GROVELING? HE WILL CAST YOU OUT TO THE DOGS AND EVERY POWER AND IMMORTAL WILL SCAVENGE YOUR BONES UNTIL EVERY LAST DROP OF POWER AND DIVINITY IS GONE. YOU KNOW IT TO BE TRUE.

Ga'al blusters, "HOW DARE...

"BEGONE!!"

And with finality, the presence of Ga'al is gone, and the impression of a dog with his tail between his legs is present in every mind.

Gargul raises both hands pointing to the roof of the amphitheater. The open side of the roof closes slowly closing the throne room in completely.

Gargul states, "None may now interfere or listen. I have closed my realm to all gods of both pantheons and the unaffiliated. Let us continue.

"Why are you here? Aexana died. That is why you are here! Why? Who messed up? Did arrogance drive your decisions? Was there a lack of the fear of death? The preciousness of life? Is there any regret? Or are you proud of your stand and that all but one of you survived?

What of those of you new to the group? Do you now see why you are here? You comrades are forced onto a dangerous path, which would now be difficult to leave even if they wanted to. You have no time to slowly integrate yourselves into a niche within the whole. The situation is too dire. You have to hear all of this and accomplish in a moment what normally takes years to achieve.

His eyes settle on Aexana.

"Forget that I am a god. Here, I'll drop all the trappings for a moment."

And with that, Gargul shrinks down to normal size, and loses all the aura of fear and power that you sensed from him earlier.

"Honest talk. Let's hear it."

(StevenVdB) Aexana DEAD
Tuesday November 25th, 2014 10:58:40 AM

At first Aexana shudders as Gargul scowls but she can imagine it must be annoying to see one adventuring group after the other begging for the return of their fallen friends...

..."Honest talk"... Ok here goes...

"I'm afraid Lord Gargul there's no other reason for being here but my own stupidity or perhaps you could name it even arrogance... Of course my friends here, whoom I do love though you are tired of hearing that, will say that it is them who failed to save me... But how could they!?!

While we were fighting the Seaspawn and Coral Golems it was I who forgot to warn my friends about the second wave of Billoopl forces... This placed all of the Lionfish in serious danger. Then hoping to help I saved all healing spells I had for our fighters so I did not heal myself when the chance was there but while shape changing into an Air Elemental I was under the false impression that they could not harm me... Perhaps this was wrong thinking or perhaps arrogance? But it was stupidity that made me forget about the Pearl of Power I had on me which could have granted me an extra healing spell... The last spell could probably have saved me from falling 75ft!

So bottom line Lord Gargul I'm affraid we are here for just my own mistakes... My friends coming here to petition for my return is beyond what I am worthy of.

All that remains now is for me to ask forgiveness to my friends and to ask you to consider giving me a chance to prove worthy of their trust in me..."

Magana gives Snafu and Aexana a scathing look as she turns to defend them from themselves.

"Hindsight is wonderful thing you two," she says heatedly, "but battle is *always* chaotic and unpredictable. From what I saw you, and everyone else, made the best decisions possible within the fog of combat. It doesn't matter how much training you have, only experience can take you from being a really good student to being an excellent fighter and tactician. Unfortunately, sometimes you don't survive the experience.

"Don't lose confidence in yourselves. Mistakes don't automatically mean you were derelict in the performance of your duties, it just means you don't know what you don't know. Repeating the same mistake, well... that's a different matter entirely."

Suddenly realizing that this probably wasn't the best place to speak out so, Magana bows her head. "I apologize, Lord Gargul. I think I've let my reach exceed my grasp."

At this moment, though? I doubt anything I've done could have saved Aexana, so I turn to the one thing I can do: be here in support of my friends. There's nothing else that I am or that I can do. I certainly don't know how to find my way here on my own. I've only just learned how to staunch a papercut.

"We under estimated our enemy. I don't think it was arrogance , but perhaps...competency. We just haven't had too many close calls and got caught off guard by the strength of our enemy."

Aexana shuffles her feet worried Lord Gargul is deeply thinking over what she and her friends have said...
Has she been too self-complaining? She realizes what the others said is of course also true...

Most of all she hopes she now hasn't disturbed the God while he was in thoughts...

Remember That [DM Jerry]
Wednesday November 26th, 2014 1:23:57 PM

"Snafu, you are as brave as you are correct.

"Aexana, you are correct to an extent. There are choices to make in combat and you do not know which will work the best until afterwards. Magana is right there. No plan, no matter how perfect, remains intact during battle. You should indeed have warned them of the second wave as that information would have helped the others make more informed choices. Also, if there is a strategy you find that works, eliminate the weakness of it. A ring of feather fall could be a good investment as Zeoll has wisely suggested.

"No apologies, Magana. I asked for honesty. I meant it. I have my temper. I don't apologize for it. However, I don't set traps for those I judge unless it is to get them to tell the truth or admit their faults.

"Jozhur, you are correct. The errors were not huge. The difficulty of this battle and the length of it you had not faced before. Learn from this.

"Zeoll, I agree with you. I know you are not one who enjoys the intricacies of combat strategy. But you do have much combat experience. Let others lead, but be the tiller. Make sure they are prepared. With each combat, see that the group is better prepared, with better coordination.

"Coerator, you are the leader when aboard ship. Are you the one to lead in pitched battle when on land? Decide. If not, appoint someone. Know who is calling the shots. That doesn't mean that this person is always to be obeyed. Battle sometimes requires personal decisions. However, if a full team each is operating using his own strategy, there is no cohesion as you have all now noticed. You are learning.

"In pitched battles, memorized healing spells are not enough. The better prepared side wins the day. Spend some gold on potions, scrolls, wands as you can. If you don't have the finances you need, visit my temple in Rum. Small it may be, but the priest there will help you. Their library also is full of tomes involving strategy written after the Year of Ascension. Study them when you have time. They will aid you.

"Now, I must speak to you as a god." He stretches his hands wide and grows back to his former size. Power emanates from him and the shock of it catches everyone's breath.

"The challenges I see ahead of you continue to become more difficult. In the end, you survived as a team. One died, when it was not necessary. You did well under the circumstances, but you must improve. THE WOLD NEEDS YOU."

"I encourage you with one final thing: Jantierri, Cult God of Dreams, communicated with me just before your battle telling me it was likely that you would all die and that Biloopl and Ga'al would prosper from it. She showed me her dream prophesy. You proved her wrong.

"You did BETTER than expected. REMEMBER THAT."

With that, he raises his hands again in a grand gesture and opens the dome.

Searching the skies, he bellows, "ANYONE INTERRUPTING MY WORK HERE THIS DAY WILL SUFFER MY INSTANT WRATH."

Pausing for effect, he then announces in the same voice that seems to be penetrating to all areas of the Lands of Rest, "I HEREBY RAISE AEXANA FROM THE GRAVE WITH NO PENALTIES. SHE AND HER COMRADES WILL GO TO MY TEMPLE IN RUM...SOON FOR THEIR BENEFIT. TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS EXPECTED. GO FORTH!"

And with that, you are dismissed. Gimp hurried guides you from the throne room.

As you exit a group of Seaspawn that look very familiar, slowly walks towards Gargul's throne. They look at you. You look at them.

And with that, you return to the Wold and arrive exactly where you left. Rested, healed, and with spells restored. Ready for action.

Perhaps wiser from the experience.

Magana, appearing a bit dazed after the encounter with Gargul, seeks out the formerly dead gnome. "Well done, Aexana, and welcome back! May your second life be longer than your first."

She pats a heavy hand on Aexana's shoulder, then turns her attention to the aftermath of the battle. With everyone healed, it seems the only thing left to do is follow the tracks of the defeated forces to their source.

Realizing that the loot review was interrupted, she waits quietly for everyone to be ready to go, and contemplates her future in a new light. Gargul had been a real but impersonal deity for her, and his direct intervention on Aexana's behalf has clearly shaken her foundations.

Once they are safely returned from Gargul's realm, Terser allows himself to muse over what would happen if they had tried cut down the seaspawn that came to visit Gargul after them. Probably inappropriate, but who can tell with the Gods?

He gives Aexana a fierce hug once she is restored, lectures her sternly about proper precautions in battle, and politely requests that Snafu promptly learn to cast featherfall for just such a contingency in the future.

I wonder what other trouble we can get into that we should be prepared for. Perhaps more water breathing scrolls, since we are in open water fairly often. Can we buy such things in Rum?

For once, Snafu was at a loss for words. Meeting a god had shaken him to his core. He barely heard Terser's request.

"There are rings that instantaneously produce a feather fall effect" he said. "I may not be fast enough, but the ring surely will."

"I have a few other thoughts on strategy" Snafu continued. "Regarding wands, I have been training Mojo in the arts of using wands. In time, he may be of some use supporting us during battle in a non-combat role."

"Regarding my role... Well my passion is illusion. As you saw in the battle, I utilize a lot of image and shadow spells. Both can be particularly effective when your allies know it's an illusion and your enemies do not. For example, I could create an illusion of complete darkness, which in some ways is more powerful than real darkness. Why? Because only the people that don't realize it's an illusion can't see in the darkness."

"When used properly illusion can selectively effect only the enemy. It can make them think that the battle is taking place in absolute darkness, when in reality it isn't. It can make them feel the effects of a stinking cloud spell, while we walk through the same spell and feel almost no effect at all. It can be used to quickly summon shadows, which flank enemies every bit as well as real enemies."

"The key is we need to find a way to let you know when it's real and when it isn't".

Holding back her tears she smiles at the ragged crew of the Lionfish...

The advice given however was plain and clear... I will need to find something to keep me from falling from the sky..."

Dm Shawn - Back in the Wold
Thursday November 27th, 2014 9:53:41 PM

A loud rumble from the bay directs the party's attention to the Lionfish. The ship is under attack! The attacker isn't completely visible, but what you can see is a claw the size of a rowboat squeezing the centre of the ship. The claw belongs to some enormous crab - larger even than the Lionfish. Barnacles and sea grass cling to the creature's thick shell. If Alemi himself were in the mood for some shellfish, this is the one he would choose. It is that big.

From this vantage point you can see figures moving about on the deck of the practically trapped Lionfish. Tula is at the helm, pointing about the ship and trying to maintain order.

The creature releases its grip of the ship and with absolute precision it decisively cleaves through the centre mast of the Lionfish. The mighty mast topples backwards across the helm, only giving Tula a fraction of a second to dive aside.

The gigantic claw is then used like a spear to plunge straight down through the centre of the Lionfish! The deck practically explodes, sending wooden splinters and shrapnel all around. Crew members dive overboard off the now stricken vessel.

Amidst the repetitive sound of the waves crashing against the damaged hull you can almost hear a faint laughter. Not from aboard the ship, but from within the water. Or perhaps it is the water itself?

The claw retracts and the Lionfish is obviously taking on massive amounts of water. The claw is poised above the ship, ready to deliver the final blow. But it holds.

Jozhur can't help but welcome Aexana back with a big hug.

His mouth hangs open as he sees The Lionfish torn apart. He takes a few quick steps towards the water before it dawns on him that there is nothing he can do to save the ship.

When Jozhur hears mention of survivors he takes off running into the sea to help.

Snafu and Mojo race down to the water in effort to help pull the survivors from the water. Neither is much for swimming, so they look for items that float that they can toss into the water.

Aex would have the ability to cast Water Breathing like Zeoll requested but she has had no time yet to study some new spells...
She could change into an aquatic animal to go and rescue the crew but she remembers last time someone tried this he got pummeled by the drowning...

But still it is perhaps the best way to help them...
So Aex wades into the water and changes into a Huge Octopus. With her renewed form she can jet out fast into the water and will start helping those in need... Let's just hope tue Lionfish crew knows it's her...
