The Suspects

The Captain of the Guard has always been a loyal and honest defender--but his wife and daughter abruptly left town a week ago. Did he send them out of harm's way knowing this crisis would happen?

The Lord Mayor has always had Northbrook's best interests at heart, but he is high-handed and dictatorial. And he has the only key to the warehouse. Could he have made yet another agreement without telling anyone?

The Merchant has a vested interest in a peaceful town, but has complained loudly about the taxation necessary to make up the tribute. Has he taken back what he feels is his?

The Priestess is a loyal servant of Pelor, but she has been a vocal critic of the "pact with evil". Has she taken matters into her own hands?

The Soldier has served the town for years, but has long been of the opinion that the best way to handle the hobgoblins would be to fight them once and for all. Has he taken steps to ensure such a fight?

The Stranger arrived in town a few days ago. Solitary and taciturn, he has had little contact with the townsfolk and has not said what his business in town is. What is he doing here?

The Thief has finally been jailed and is awaiting the arrival of the King's Justiciar to decide her fate. True, she has been safely behind bars this whole time, but locks and bars mean little to a cunning thief. Has she exacted revenge on the townsfolk who seem to have ended her career?

The Wizard is well-respected, but she has a deplorable fondness for practical jokes--and magic would have made the theft much easier. Is this all just a prank?

Matt C (DM) - A sad, dark night
Saturday July 12th, 2014 12:06:17 PM

Most evenings in the town of Northbrook, the farmers would be arriving from the fields, merchants would be stashing their wares in preparation for the next morning's sales, young couples would be taking a stroll, and wives would be preparing dinner for their families.

Unfortunately, not this evening.

You see, a pall has come over the town. It is the eve of the Spring Equinox, always a tense time for Northbrook. By morning, a horde of hobgoblins will be waiting at the town gates, eagerly expecting their annual tribute of gold, trinkets, grains, salted meats, and a variety of other valuable commodities with which the town would otherwise be loath to part.

Years ago, the Mayor, to the ignorance of the town counsel, and in fact all of Northbrook, made a pact with these particular hobgoblins. The beasts, who would otherwise harass the town regularly, had instead been turned into a sort of protective force. The hobgoblins ensured that Northbrook was not attacked by any other monstrous beasts in the wilds surrounding the remote town, and in return, they expected an annual tribute - or, as many in town call it, "a bribe" - to be paid on the dawn of the Spring Equinox.

While other towns may celebrate the herald of spring, Northbrook has long regarded it as a necessary evil to be suffered, then thankfully forgotten for another year.

This year, however, is different.

The townsfolk have spent months carefully preparing the tribute - hoarding grains (and rationing their own food to boot), salting meats, paying additional taxes, crafting fine items, and generally "going without" in order to meet the sizable demands of the hobgoblins. And the work seems to be for naught.

Earlier in the day, the Mayor and a few of his underlings visited the warehouse storing the tribute, to undertake a final count and ensure all was in order, only to find an empty warehouse. An overturned barrel of grain, a few short spears, and some pieces of saltpork being nibbled by rats, where all that remained of the stockpile.

Attempts at keeping the disaster under wraps soon fell apart, and earlier today the townsfolk began their panicked clamor for answers. Northbrook is too far from any other civilized region, and no help can be expected unless it comes from within the town's indefensible walls.

The Captain of the guard has been questioned, and after speaking with his soldiers, has confirmed that no one has left the town for days, and the Mayor's staff know for certain that the tribute was present even the day before, thus ensuring that the tribute, and those responsible for its theft, are still somewhere in Northbrook.

Time is short. In twelve hours, the hobgoblins will arrive expecting their "gifts," and all are sure that without the tribute, the hobgoblins will be all to happy to ransack the town from top to bottom.

The town guard has proven too undermanned to investigate the theft on its own, and frankly, the townsfolk are out in force themselves attempting (however ineptly) to find the tribute. It's quite the chaotic evening.

Northbrook's priestess of Flower, Rolanda, is holding an evening prayer service on the steps of the small temple, vocally complaining of what she calls the "pact-with-evil," and telling those in attendance that this is the only result that could be expected of the Mayor's short-sighted, heavy-handed practices.

Halvard, the second-in-command of the town guard, sits by the gate, sharpening his greataxe with a grim smile on his face. A dwarf of some renown in Northbrook, he has been rallying the guard with promises of glory now that they finally get to "put down this menace once and for all." (though most are unsure how the small garrison will accomplish such a feat against a sizable force of hobgoblins)

It's 5:00 in the evening, and you have twelve hours to save Northbrook. Who has committed the atrocious crime? Where is the tribute being held? Someone must solve these mysteries if the town is to survive...

The priestess and soldier are NPCs, and will interact as if they were being played as PCs. Each of you should specify where in town you might be, and what, if anything, you are doing. The PCs include the Captain of the Guard, the Mayor, the Merchant, the Stranger, the Thief, and the Wizard. Assume a "typical" medium-sized town with all of the normal buildings and services you'd expect. You may begin taking any actions you wish, and finding, meeting or otherwise interacting with the others as you see fit.

Matt C (DM) - EDIT

The thief is locked in the town "jail," consisting of a cell in the small Guardhouse, across the room from the Captain's desk.

The spring brought better weather, that was true, but it also brought the hobgoblins Aldo thought as he locked his door, and moved down the path to the main road. Some kids were sitting by his gate, but it only took a few seconds to shew them away.

He made his way down the main road, headed to the Inn. He was caught off guard to see the priestess giving a private prayer service. Prayers were needed if the they wanted to find the offering in the next 12 hours. Aldo knew they were pressed for time, and knew the hobgoblins would destroy the town and everyone in it. He looked around to see if anyone he talked to was in attendance, perhaps some info from the mayor or Captain on the progress.

I cannot help but smile inwardly as I walk down the street. So much had happened since the last moon and excitement is everywhere in the town. Everything seems so neatly wrapped up...but as always there is that one loose thread, one I know might be better off ignored yet I cannot help but pick at...Earlier today, the innkeeper at the Northbrook Arms informed me that a mysterious stranger that's been staying there was asking questions about me, and such questions are dangerous and tend to lead to more questions.

I lean on my walking stick, a sturdy piece of wood that can easily serve as a quarter staff, as I glance casually around before entering the Inn and ordering a dark ale from the bar. Here is where I will be waiting for the stranger to descend. Here is where I will learn what he knows of me and my deeds. Here is where I will cut the cumbersome thread.

Matt C (DM) - MORE ABOUT TOWN
Saturday July 12th, 2014 2:57:57 PM

As I should have described, the town contains the following:
Mayor's House
Temple of Flower
Captain's Guardhouse
The Inn (just the one)
The Tribute Warehouse
Sentry guardhouses along the wall, including the main one at the only gate to town
Market street with stalls and vendor stores (all closed)
A multitude of private homes (each of you can decide how your own home is laid out, furnished, etc. within
reason)
A "medical" center for treating minor wounds and injuries

If I'm forgetting a common element of a town, assume it exists

The Mayor, in his office, walks from one side to the other. He whistles, as he normally do when under stress. He calls the guards at his door.
"Quickly, fetch your Captain, Halvard, the pristess Rolanda, the wizard Gersemi, and master Withershott. If they resist you are under command to restrain them and bring them here by force. Quickly!"
When the group is assembled he will talk to them.
"I would say good afternoon, but it is not a good afternoon. Someone has stolen our tribute, and put all the town in peril. Before we start I want to ask each of you: Did you took the tribute? If you did, and you confess and give the tribute back I promise you no harm or punishment will come to you. If you deny it and I discover it, I will make sure you lament it the rest of the short life you will have left."
He scans the room trying to detect who is lying, or nervous.
Sense Motive Roll: 29
If he doesn't get a response, and don't find anything, starts giving orders.
"Please tell me anything you know about this dreadful situation. Any suspicion or clue. And I order you to help the Captain of the Guard to find the tribute, and the responsible. I say we chack the warehouse for clues, and also interrogate the thief we got in jail. He might know something."
After hearing the information he can gather he takes the group to the warehouse, looking for clues.

The mayor will hear everybody, but he won't let the meeting to become an argument. He will make them move, and quickly. No time to lose, people. He goes to get some information, I make a Knowledge (Local) Roll: 18, and a Gather Information Roll: 32.

Decla the Thief
Monday July 14th, 2014 8:23:31 AM

"Well Decla, this is a fine mess you've gotten yourself into."

The half-elf slowly prowls back and forth through his cell. It's well constructed, obviously, or he'd no longer be here. Just through the door leading out, he can see light coming from the Captain's office. If the Captain had more sense about him, neither one of them would be in this mess.

The boredom was the worst part. He decides he needs some company. "Taaaaaalfrynnnnn," he starts, continuing to call out the Captain's name, drawing it out a little bit longer each time. He can't ignore his prisoner forever, right? If he's too good to be bothered with a perfectly good bribe, then by golly he'll just have to suffer through having a prisoner...

Gersemi of Clan Turen - AKA The Gnome Wizard - AC 14 HP 19 (James D)

I keep my eyes peeled for my quarry, unrelenting in my task, my face hidden deep within the cowl of my cloak and behind a large mug of beer. These troublesome people do not understand what is truly important in life and are unable to appreciate a good joke. I think to my self, knowing that my inquires must come first if at all possible. I must find out who is checking in on me and why. If I can accomplish that first (or convince the guards to let me finish what I am doing before the meeting) I will, though I will try to stay out of sight and avoid them until my task is complete. If we are stopped together I will insist the stranger come with us until I can get the information I seek, never letting him out of my sight. And if if my investigation happens to be complete I will go willing enough to see what the Mayor wants and find out what he may have learned.

My mind drifts as I wait. With all that is going on I shouldn't be surprised if the mayor summons me...a summons...does he really have the authority of command me, or is merely a request? The latter I must assume...he never did get my japes, like the time I used a scroll to put a Continual Flame on the Lord Mayor's backside. My smile begins to grow as I remember the sight fondly, Or the herd of swine I transported to the roof of the town hall... I keep trying, but these blasted humans just don't seem to get it. They don't understand. Truly an unappreciative audience...but this is something they will remember...

The halfling moves down the road to the inn, but a chance enounter with some guards changes his destination to the mayors office.

Once inside he sees the other prominent members of town.

Then the mayor brings up the theft of the tribute as if it is not common knowledge. The whole town knew about it and the ramifications it brought with it.

To top it off, the mayor asked if they had anything to do with it. For some reason it felt like misdirection to Aldo. Perhaps the mayor knew more then he let on. Perhaps he was in on it.

The thought of some dirty, disgusting hobgoblin sleeping in Aldo' bed made him shutter. The halfling wiped some sweat away as he awaited to see what everyone had to say. The whole time he tried to keep an eye on the mayor.(Sense Motive 19)

The stranger sits in the shadows of the Inn, trying to see what kind of trouble this town was going to cause for him. He was hoping to move along quickly and accomplish his goals, but the recent turn of events has put quite a kink in his plan. He's not sure how these events are going to turn out.

He spots the gnome wizard easily as he walks into the Inn. The stranger remains where he sits for the moment, content to see how the world will turn about him next.

Decla the Thief

Decla smiles and takes the writing supplies from The Captain.

On it, he writes as follows:

Captain Talfryn smells like boiled cabbage now, but will almost certainly smell worse on the end of a hobgoblin pike. Such a shame about that tribute. If I'm to remain locked in this cell and killed by a goblinoids, I request my last meal be a roast pheasant with spiced potatoes. I prefer mead to drink, but will not be picky given the circumstances.

He smiles and hands the paper back. "Glad to see you're keeping your eye on what's really important, Captain. What a good errand boy you are. Anyway, be quick about the pheasant. If I'm going to be stuck in this cell, the least I can do is eat better than the dried meats I'd be eating out in the wild."

Gersemi Highlight to display spoiler: { The Northbrook Arms, normally bustling at this time in the evening, cannot boast many patrons at the moment. You enter and order a drink. There are few conversations, and your eye is immediately drawn to an out-of-place man in the corner. You recognize the other patrons as townsfolk - this must be the man you seek.}

Gersemi and stranger Highlight to display spoiler: {Play out your conversation via spoiler as you see fit, but it is a brief discussion.

Moments after the two of you begin talking, a town guard enters and spots Gersemi. "Madam enchantress," he says, noticeably nervous. "I'm afraid I must insist on escorting you to His Honor the mayor's home. He was most insistent." He leads Gersemi out and toward the mayor's house.
}

Aldo Highlight to display spoiler: {As you make your way toward the inn, two soldiers spot you and make haste in your direction. At first, there seems to be a major misunderstanding here - attacking a prominent merchant in the middle of town? But as they near, one calls, "Sir! No need for alarm. The Mayor has . . . requested . . . your presence at his mansion." You can tell from the way the guard speaks that the word "request" is more a matter of good manners than anything else. With that, the guards lead you up the hill toward the Mayor's home, careful to keep a polite distance (though not so distant that you can ignore their presence).}

Meanwhile, Decla and Talfryn Highlight to display spoiler: { Decla's calls go unanswered for a few long moments, until Talfryn can no longer stand the annoyance. Talfryn demands that Decla write an account of her activities and whereabouts over the days leading to her capture (two days ago), and hands paper and writing implements through the bars of the cell.

Talfryn attempts to maintain his usual air of authority and control, but his worry belies him as his hands shake ever-so-slightly. I made the intimidate check DC 16, Decla's hit dice + wisdom modifier per skill description, Talfryn falls just shy of success

Decla decides to be obliging, and scratches a note on the offered paper.

As Decla taunts Talfryn, the door to the guardhouse opens. "Umm . . . err . . . Captain, sir? The Mayor demands your presence at once. I'm sorry, sir, not my words . . . ."

Talfryn (I assume) heads for the mayor's house, leaving a guard stationed inside the door to keep an eye on Decla. "I don't want any trouble, thief," the guard mutters. 'I'm not nice like the cap'n."
}

Talfryn Highlight to display spoiler: { You can easily determine that the handwriting on Decla's note does not at all resemble the handwriting on the note in your pocket.}

Mederick, Aldo, Gersemi, Talfryn Highlight to display spoiler: { Aldo, Gersemi, and Talfryn arrive and are shown to the mayor's parlor, where you find Rolanda, the local priestess, attempting to give the mayor a bit of her mind. "How dare you interrupt my prayer service? It's not enough that some fool lost the tribute - now that it's time to prepare to handle these evil beasts, we have to sit in here?"

Meanwhile, Talfryn, you notice one of your best soldiers, Halvard, sitting idly in a chair, watching Rolanda with no small amount of amusement on his face.

Rolanda stops when the others enter.

Mederick asks, very frankly, if any present stole the tribute. Of course, a chorus of "nos" immediately goes up. The Mayor asks several follow up questions.

All, converse as you like, feel free to make extra posts for the conversation to continue, unless a roll or check is needed from me. If anyone or everyone goes to the warehouse as the mayor has said, please say so
}

Aldo Highlight to display spoiler: { You attempt to get a feel for those in the room (sense motive 19) but can't get a good read. The Mayor seems to be genuinely angry and concerned, though he hides his emotions better than most.}

Mederick Highlight to display spoiler: {Everyone denies the theft. You can see plainly that no one is being forthcoming or altogether cooperative. Talfryn looks like a mix of nervous and angry; Aldo is sweating; Gersemi has an odd, out-of-place smirk that she can't quite hide; Rolanda is seething with indignation; Halvard has a grim smile on his face as he picks at his nails with a dagger. You do a very good job of reading all of them - the problem is, all of them seem a bit abnormal right now.

Your knowledge check reminds you of the rumor of a strange man in town. No one knows who he is or why he is around, and he hasn't made many friends in the few days he's been here.

I'll wait for conversation to continue and to check everyone's reactions before moving you to the warehouse.
}

A note on time: I will attempt to somewhat randomize the time and duration of events. Here, I decided that the time spent, including the guards locating and getting everyone to the mayor, would be D10+10 minutes. I'll keep it random but realistic and my header will include the time as of the END of my post.

The merchant takes a break and cracks his knuckles. "Damn winter is making my hands so sore. Now back to the situation at hand. Has anyone approached the hobgoblins about an extension? In my dealings I have met with many people, some respectable men and women of stature. Other despicable low lifes looking for their skim. I am hard to intimidate and harder to out barter. Perhaps I can make a deal for an extension on our behalf?"

Everyone EXCEPT Decla Highlight to display spoiler: {Talfryn asks for everyone's whereabouts and activities the past evening. Mederick explains that he was working late with his staff, and Aldo was similarly engaged at his own warehouse with some of his workers.

Halvard explains, "Aye, cap'n, you know well that I was on the wall doing my shift. That lazy one, Johnson, he was with me, he'll attest."

Rolanda doesn't seem to be calming down. "I was at my temple, as I am every night, you gentlemen know that full well. And I'll not be visiting any dirty warehouse in these robes. Honestly. I have nothing to do with this, and I'm done with this meeting! It serves all of us right, this pact with evil you made, Your Excellency, is going to be the ruin of this town!" She heads for the door as she finishes.

Gersemi has dragged a strange man into the meeting, and Talfryn questions him extensively. So far, the stranger has contented himself by listening to the back and forth, but now that he is directly addressed...

Aldo suggests negotiating for an extension, which idea Talfryn seems to think might work.

Talfryn suggests that he start preparing the town defenses while his soldier, Halvard, accompanies the Mayor to the tribute warehouse. "Aye, cap'n, I'll keep an eye on His Excellency for you, make sure nothing goes awry," Halvard says, with an obvious glare at Mederick.

When the mayor addresses the Stranger, he stands and replies, "I am simply a person passing through. I have no quarrel with you, nor anyone else here." He looks over at Gersemi and continues, "But I see that there be evil afoot, and I've heard enough to know that the town is in trouble. I humbly offer my services to aid you at this time, though I know not how much aid I can provide should these rumors of hordes of hobgoblins in the morning prove true."

Some notes:

1. DM post early tonight, I am going to be out. I know we are missing a post or two but since most everything is conversastion right now, please post as you like to keep the talking going.

2. If something is happening with you and another person, or a subset of the group, where others wouldn't be aware of it, put it in spoiler for me and the person(s) involved. That way, no one inappropriately knows what anyone else is up to. Makes it a more interesting game that way.

Everyone EXCEPT Decla Highlight to display spoiler: { Mederick takes control and gives some orders. Immediately, two of the guards outside are dispatched to "tail" Rolanda. (it will be easy enough to send someone to check with them as you like).

The idea of negotiating is appealing, but tabled for now, in the hope that the tribute can be located. To that end, Mederick and Aldo leave to explore the warehouse. (if anyone else goes, let me know)

The others are ushered into the foyer, but are left to talk or plan as they desire.

The strange man, who has yet to offer a name or explanation of his presence, does offer his assistance as the town may need, giving a particular look to Gersemi. (those two can continue to converse as desired)

(I need to delve into this more to determine the result, it's a very novel one, but I'm on it)

Mederick and Aldo Highlight to display spoiler: {The two of you begin the journey toward the warehouse, a pair of guards escorting you - well, escorting the mayor; they don't seem to care as much for Aldo's safety. At first, there is an uncomfortable silence, though discussion finally breaks out. You estimate it is about a 10 minute walk to the warehouse. (discuss as you see fit, if you choose to post more than once to get the conversation in, that's fine). }

I mean when did this stranger get into town, and the rumors of the thief in the cells? When was he locked up? Where there guards stationed to protect it? And if so, what happened. And if not, why was their no protection for a tribute?"

Halvard comes running up. "Cap'n says I'm to join you in the search. What do we need to do? I should be getting ready for the brawl, not going over an empty room again . . . ."

As for when, what and where, earlier today the mayor went to the warehouse with his staff to do a final check on the tribute, and that is when it was found missing (just to fill in details).

The guards take up posts by the warehouse door, waiting for Mederick and Aldo as they work.

You can already hear guards running toward you, but Gersemi wastes no time, running and tackling the nameless man. The two of you go down in a heap on the floor, rolling and tangling each other.

The guards arrive, swords drawn. "What in bloody blazes is going on here?!" one yells. "You two, on yer feet, hands where we can see 'em, and don't be movin' none either!"

You find yourselves surrounded by 6 soldiers pointing some rather sharp-looking short swords at you.

Gersemi informs the guards that this strange man is a suspect in the tribute theft. "I don't care if you think he stole me own grandmama," the guard says. "You two can tell it all to the cap'n; we're all going to take a walk to see him now."

All this trouble because this stranger refused to answer a simple question...He was looking for me, there I was...why wouldn't he just answer the question. I can appreciate misdirection and a good joke, but stubbornness is the last resort of a boring man.

I cooperate and go with the guard, having long since learned that among the droll humans guards have the least sense of humor and understanding. As the story is relayed it takes great strength on my part not to correct my captor when he says I claimed the stranger took the treasure, but rather said he was a person of interest...but perhaps there is a a way to correct him tactfully...Sir, could you please check the stranger for weapons before you leave us? He is a person of interest who came to town shortly before the tribute was stolen, and my sources tell me he had been asking many odd questions just before the theft. I would hate for him to escape before we can get the truth out of him.

It will be fun to see this man interrogated, and if they ruff him up all the better the prank. Serves him right for ignoring me. How the guard could not tell he doesn't have the flare necessary to pull off such a heist I will never know...Shame. It would have been nice to find someone else who can appreciate such jokes and could help me pull off something truly legendary...

I agree to write my statement down, under the condition that he can leave out my sources. You understand Captain, I fear the stranger will find out and retaliate against them. I am willing to tell you personally though. Aside from that I write down my side of events. I explain how I heard about the missing tribute and while asking questions learned (from the Inn Keeper) that the stranger came to town shortly before the theft and that he had been asking suspicious questions about me. When I went to confront him he began acting VERY strange. He quit moving, quit talking, quit breathing, and his face went blank. The only explanation I could think of was he was casting a silent spell or I had just fallen into a trap. It was the creepiest thing I had ever experience. He just quit responding. Given the questions he had been asking and the timing of the theft I had to assume the worse.

Your cooperation in this matter will only speed up things and allow us to get the bottom of it fast then we can worry but the more important task of the tribute. I take no sides and act on the facts only, that is why I want your side please. As to the search it is just normal procedure when anyone is brought here. It keeps things safe and secure. I take a deep breath and calm myself. Looking as sincere, hurt, and willing to help as possible I speak...Sorry,I did not plan to attack him. When I questioned him he began acting like he was under a spell or possessed. He suddenly stopped moving. He quit talking. He quit breathing. I was scared. I thought he was either casting a silent spell or possessed. Those are the only situations I know where a person acts like that.

I will make you a deal. If you get him to explain why he was invading my privacy, why he was acting so strange, and how he could have come to help us BEFORE the treasure was stolen and there was need for help, then I too will offer my aid in recovering the tribute.

ooc: I am feeling a little rail roaded since my one clue was that this guy was checking into me. He automatically spots my hiding in the bar. I cannot search his room. The guard knows where to find me despite me not being at home so I have no time to act. The stranger did not have to respond to my questions in a positive or negative way he simply ignored my posts and the DM moved it forward. And when I managed to grapple him the combat was immediately broken up with 6 other guards present before I could try forcing him to answer, despite the fact that he was in another building with the mayor being asked to find me while this should have been taking place. I don't think it should be asking too much to have been allowed to at least get him to lie about why he was asking questions about me, even better if he tells the truth.

Halvard immediately jumps into the mix and since Aldo is closest to the print, he grabs Aldo's foot and compare it to the print. "Huh. You sure have little feet. This print is way bigger than your boot." He does the same with the mayor's foot (and the mayor is probably quite indignant about it), and says, "About the same size, but no way to tell whose bootprint this is. To Halvard the mayor explains:
"I will make sure your opinions and services to the city are rewarded appropriately then this mess is solved, soldier. By having you cleaning the guard latrines until you get a liking for it. Now shut up and follow us, and if I ever need your opinion for something, I will resign my post."

"Well, you've done nothing, and here you are! You're just a few feet away from a jail cell already, and all you did is go quiet when that little filly there expected, nay insisted, you answer her questions.

"At least I assume you did nothing. You seem nice enough..."

Having said my peace I sit back and wait, hoping beyond hope that I am not the only one who noticed that once again the stranger failed to answer any of the questions or put anything in writing, and I can only assume his mark will be a generic X or something equally as obscure. Gods, I think to myself, If they don't catch onto his crap than perhaps this city does deserve to die. Cannot appreciate my tricks and falls for his crap.

Thinking for a sec, then I say "I can accept that". I call to the guard watching Decla and order him take Kirill to another private room to write up his statement then report back to me.

"Kirill go with this guard and he will record your statement and sign it please. After that you might want to head to the inn for dinner I will either meet up with you there or summon you if I need you. I need to deal with the wizard.

When the guard and Kirill leave the room I turn my attention to Gersemi.

Halvard chimes in again. "It couldn't be a dwarf's footprint. I'm one of the only dwarves in this town, and why would I steal the stinking tribute? What, I'm just going to carry it out on me back or something? I'm telling you, that could have been a human, even an elf, if any of those dirty, stinking things are crawling around town."

I am truly shocked to realize that I did not include my version of what happened in my written account. Sorry, I thought I included that in my previous report to you. Here, take a look at this. I hand him a piece of parchment with my latest plan in progress. I truly marvelous jape, if I do say so myself. I was up all night drafting it and getting spell components from the local merchants. everyone knows the Mayor needs to be taken down a notch, so I had the tailor make a giant set of clothes that match his under the guise that they were for a large statue being made in his honor. As soon as I pick them up I am going to shrink them and switch them for the mayors while he sleeps. Then in the middle of his next speech the spell will wear off!!! It will be hilarious!!!

After finishing up my business and returning home I speak to the guards and ask to be taken to the location where the tribute was being stored so I can better assess the situation. As we talk I am only slightly surprised to see the Mayor approach and give deep bow with a flourish of my cape as he comes near. To what do I owe this honor? When he asks if I know y what means the treasure might have been magically removed I put my keen mind to the test. Before I say anything, let me assure you that I had nothing to do with this theft. At first I though this a jest for the ages, but where is the visual? The humor? The punchline? This is just a theft, and I testify my innocence before a candle of truth if necessary. I would have to see the storage area to get a better idea of what we are dealing with. Off hand I would think a magical unlock or knock spell could get them access to a building and a bag of holding or a portal of some sort could have been used to move the items. It might be possible the items are still there and hidden with an invisibility spell...but I think the ringing noise is the key to this if it is in fact magic. A thief would want to be as quiet as possible, only making noise when they have to. I then think a bit longer, in case there is a possibility I missed something.

Checks to determine how one could break in and stuff stuff using magic...particularly if it involves a ringing noise or the stranger.

The mayor nods.
"We have different ways to approach life, and jokes, for that matter. But I am certain you don't want the blood of the citizens of the town on your hands. And I am sure we can leave or differences aside to solve this mystery, and save the town. Come see the place, and maybe you can detect if magic was used in the theft."

Before we even head out I cast detect magic (cantrip) and scan the area, and do so on a regular basis as we travel in case we pass something unusual on the way to the scene of the crime. (I also am careful to make sure I check out the stranger and the thief...everyone, but them in particular.)

Outside specifically, it is far more muddied, what with so many people walking to or near the door (including people who were supposed to be there, like Mederick and his staff when they checked the door). But you are able to identify the same bootprints again, and some small-sized bootprints as well.

ROlanda stays outside, claiming she is looking for evidence of anything to make a ringing noise.

Mederick, Gersemi, Kirill Highlight to display spoiler: {The mayor breaks the news that a chime of opening is the likely source of both the noise and the unlocked warehouse door. Rolanda nods. "That makes sense, though one must wonder . . ." she looks to Gersemi. "Who would have access to such magical implements?"

Kirill points out the various bootprints he finds. Specifically, he finds that a medium-sized humanoid walked in and out several times. Given that the bootprints are mostly next to the marks of boxes being dragged, this is likely the person that moved the tribute. The small-sized prints are outside only, mixed with a variety of other prints, likely coming from those that have (for legitimate reasons) been near the warehouse, such as the mayor and his assistants.

It doesn't seem like you can learn anything more specific about the prints. They look to be from fairly standard, average quality boots that could be purchased anywhere around town, and there are no distinctive marks or shapes.

There are windows around the house, but only the one (main) door that you see. I shake my head as I ponder who might have access to such an item as a chime of opening. Under normal circumstance I would say anyone could get one, but with the hobgoblins taking anything of value I would imagine they are hard to get in town. The merchant probably knows more about what can be bought around here than I do...but I would suspect someone from out of town...perhaps a stranger who has been secretive about their business....The user could be be anyone. You do need no magic skills to use this item.

As I look at the prints I turn to the guards, Is it possible to compare the prints to everyone's foot prints and shoes? That might hep us to identify the thief.

He downs the ale you bought him, and heads out the door. "I know just the place to turn this into two gold!"

The other wing of the house, devoted to offices and some larger receiving rooms, is mostly empty. There are a few guards posted inside the main door and at the entrance to the private wing, but they are apparently sleepy and not paying much attention. In any case, you have no trouble slinking right by them. You locate what must be the mayor's office, since it is the largest and most central office, with a secretary's office next to it.

Everyone at the warehouse Highlight to display spoiler: {The bootprints can't tell you much more. They are from fairly standard boots, and anyone in town might have been wearing them. Without treads, there isn't anything to be learned beyond this.

Rolanda pipes in. "A chime of opening? Mayor, I don't recall hearing of anyone with one of those either. A town like this, we would have known of any other thefts, no? Either the chime was just brought to town, or someone has been waiting a long time to use it."

All in all, you gather what you'd estimate as about 20 gold pieces worth of fencible goods.

Finding what you came for, you are able to sneak right back out of the house with no problem whatsoever, and can now choose your next destination.

Talfryn Highlight to display spoiler: { HAlvard nods, then salutes with a fist across his chest. "Understood, cap'n. What would you have of me? I can visit Aldo and Rolanda, what do I do with them? Questions, verifying some stories? Got it." He heads out the door.}

Mederick, Gersemi, Kirill Highlight to display spoiler: { The tracking gets harder the farther you go from the warehouse. Kirill finds that the marks from boxes being dragged end close to deep depressions in the dirt, clearly from wagon wheels. The depressions are deep enough to tell that the wagon was laden pretty heavily. It must have had the tribute loaded onto it. The wagon tracks can be followed briefly, but soon they mix with the footprints, hoofprints, and wagon tracks from the everyday use of the town streets, and there is no way to follow a trail beyond that.

Gersemi thinks more about the chime. Clearly, since the tribute wasn't stolen last year, it must be a more recent acquisition, and no one can remember hearing of any thefts in the recent past in town, this being the first criminal event outside of drunken bar brawls in a long time. In fact, other than a few merchants losing fruit to a passing child, this is the first theft any of you can remember in Northbrooke.

Looking around at the group I notice it is smaller than expected. Do we know where all the suspects from from earlier currently are? If it was one of us, then the odds are excellent they will try to leave town BEFORE the hobgoblins get here. Also, would it be possible for the guards to have someone patrol the edge of town looking for wagon wheel that could indicate a heavy cart recently leaving and check everywhere capable of hiding a wagon? Something that large cannot be easy to hide. I imagine if it is in town there are only a hand full of barns or haystacks capable of hiding such things.

I was also hoping to learn if anyone is missing, because if so they would be a prime suspect (although my character still does not trust the stranger). I feel like I have set a few things in motion and am waiting for results.

In character:
Turning to the guard I shrug. One of the sets of tracks is small. How many small sized people are in this town? It might help us to narrow down our list of suspects. Top priority should be those small sized people you originally took as suspects. I am willing to let you compare my feet to the prints if you have a tracker capable of comparing my tracks to those.

Sir. If I might have control of a few of your guards, I would like to have any suspects currently unaccounted for, both at this very moment and at the time of the theft rounded up for questioning. I would further like to round up anyone small in stature (small foot prints) for questioning and to have them locked in the jail cells until this is figured out.

ooc: What players are small sized besides me? Because I cannot see other people's sheets I do not know everyone's race.

Aldo again gets back to work. Much was to be done, and he still didn't know if the mayor would want him to talk to the hobgoblins. Maybe it was time to find the mayor and plead again to speak with him.

The halfling makes his last preparations and heads out for the mayor.

Ooc sorry about the posts been tring to keep up so much going on in Rl that was not expected I have been realing alone just that post was hard but things have settled down now I hope. Also I have several things I am also waiting to hear back about.

In Character :

To the group "Wagons, footprints backgrounds and defence of the town! Slow down I have so much right now going on I think my head is going to explode. So little time. The backgrounds are been looked into and defence is well under way just in case. So now the wagons and footprints thing. Lets see. is it now common to see wagon prints in or around the warehouse are them deep (showing they are heavy loaded? and foot prints people are always around here, Guards, people passing by. We need to find or rule out the who footprints they are. 2 sets you say. lets examine the little ones first who do we know could make such ones. Dwarfs, woman, kids? Can someone make a list we rule out of them. Mayor? I will start" I place my foot next to the small footprint "No mot me! Next Mayor, then Kirill and then Gersemi. I will also summon Aldo and Rolanda here and we can all check them also. Did you check Halvard we he was here last time with you? If not I will summon him also."

I turn to the guard with me and ask him to summon Aldo and Rolanda here please. After we all do the small print we head to the other one and repeat the process noting who might fit each one.

"Now the wagon thing and searching the town. Do we have the time and man power to really do this and I think trying to follow the tracks are going to be impossible with all the traffic of the town and this area lately. But if you insist I will get on that as I wail for reports to get back to me."

The Mayor puts his feet next to the print.
Not me, either...

The Stranger Kirill (Jeff O)

While you are conversing, Aldo strolls up to the group. "Thought I'd never find you," he says. He is here to offer his negotiating services to the mayor once again.

Rolanda is already present, and a guard goes off in search of Halvard. Rolanda ambles up to the footprint and places her foot next to it. "Obviously not mine," she says. "Though my feet are dainty and ladylike, they are still larger than this."

Neither Talfryn, nor Kirill, nor Mederick's feet are remotely close to the prints.

However, both Aldo and Gersemi's feet are of a size with the print.

I'll leave the wagon and search issues until you all decide what to do

"Mayor, I might once again suggest that the search focus on the wagon and goods. Certainly such a large cargo is our best target, and even if we don't find out who did it right away, if the good are located, at least the town will survive."

Gersemi of Clan Turen - AKA The Gnome Wizard - AC 14 HP 19 (James D)
Saturday August 16th, 2014 6:19:44 PM

I raise an eyebrow in surprise. Why is Aldo giving up on a search so easily. Why does he think he should go to negotiate a deal when the mayor negotiated the original deal deal with the hobgoblins? My mind kicks into over drive...

1) When this whole thing started he complained that his hands were sore
2) Multiple people were involved and his witnesses were his employees who could have been in on the theft as well
3) He said he was engaged in his ware house, a good spot to hide the tribute
4) He thinks he has enough items to give them collateral when he should have given his extra as tribute
5) He has been complaining about the taxes
6) He is looking at leaving town to open / extend business to another town
7) To do this he would likely need a wagon to transport his goods
8) He said he had business back at his warehouse
9) He is one of the only people who could likely afford a chime of opening or get access to one

Wait! I think I know who did it. There are very few people in this town with several lackeys that could aid them. That really narrows things down to the merchant and his staff or the captain and guards. Among those only the merchant would likely have access to a chime of opening. He said he has a ware house where he could store items. He has been looking at doing in business in other towns. He is likely to own a wagon to take goods to other towns, and he is the only person here wanting us to drop the search. He has also been strangely eager to negotiate with the hobgoblins despite the mayor brokering the original deal for our safety, despite the fact that he openly complains about these taxes. Taxes which really should limit how much he has to offer as collateral.

I suspect if we question his employees and lock them up after telling them this they will be willing to talk. Lets lock him up as well until his men are questioned and his place searched.

ooc: I hope I am right on this. I went back to the beginning and reread everything to this point looking for clues...though the stranger has still been EXTREMELY VAGUE as to why he had been stalking me and unhelpful in answering questions as to his whereabouts.

Why is everyone in this town acting so suspicious! I well as I place my hands on my hips. If it is suspected that one of us is the thief, then why would we possibly split into small groups? Especially when we know they had accomplices! Speaking of which, where we you guards when the tribute was stolen? Why shouldn't we expect the two of you were working together to steal the tribute? It would explain how it was stolen out from under your noses!

Kirill and Gersemi Highlight to display spoiler: { You stay on Talfryn's tail. He doesn't leave from the corner where he and Halvard are talking. You can see him pull a bunch of papers from his coat and read through them.}

Decla Highlight to display spoiler: { You find a window in back, and with practiced ease you climb in, retrieve your gear, and slip back out, without even disturbing the dust on the floor. Sneaking a bit away and looking back, you don't think the guard out front heard a thing.}

Questions:
What were you doing last night?
Do you know what Halvard and Captain Talfryn were doing?
Do you saw movement in the night?
Do you know who stole the tribute, and why?

Mederick Highlight to display spoiler: { You find four guards, including the two you have following you around. They all claim that they were at their posts last night, and they confirm the same for each other. You get no sense that they are lying or hiding something. Beyond that, three of the guards have nothing left to offer. One, however, mentions, "Well, Your Honor, it was strange. At the end of my shift, a bit into evening, I went over to the guardhouse to pick up my pay - see, I was sick last week and didn't have a chance to get my coin - but the guardhouse was empty. Cap'n is always there in the evening. He usually takes his meal at his desk, and does whatever stuff he does with all those papers and parchments - I can't read, sir - and he's usually there kind of late. 'Specially now with his wife and daughter on vacation, he don't seem to have nothin' else to do. Funny though, I looked around for a bit, but I couldn't find him anywhere. I'm sure he was doing something important, though. Can I go back to my post, Your Honor? I don't want to be reported for slacking on the job."}

Decla Highlight to display spoiler: { Once you're fully equipped, you head toward the outskirts of town and walk along the wall, keeping to the shadows. You quickly figure out the timing of the guard patrols on the wall. There are small "guard housings" every hundred or so feet, and at least one guard does the walk from housing to housing about every 5 minutes. They don't seem to be in much of a hurry, and it's quite dark, so the light from their torches probably only serves to blind them to the darker night around them. It's always the same - stupid guards in every small town you find.

The wall is a wooden palisade, about 20 feet high. It's constructed of vertical logs. It might take some skill, but you think it's climbable, though it will be tough.
}

Gersemi and Kirill Highlight to display spoiler: { Gersemi steps into the shadows and casts invisibility on herself, letting Kirill know she is going to tail them in a sneakier fashion. Kirill decides to go right up to Talfryn to chat. See next spoiler. Gersemi, roll me checks for move silently as you post, but you are able to sneak up enough to hear the conversation, so you can read the next spoiler as well.}

Talfryn and Kirill Highlight to display spoiler: { Before Talfryn and Halvard can head on their way, Kirill comes sauntering up and says, "Hello, sirs. Might I ask what you're doing right now?"}

Aldo and Mederick Highlight to display spoiler: { It doesn't take long to reach Talfryn's house. The two of you spend a goodly amount of time searching the grass and mud around the house, and the nearby street, for wagon tracks, but you don't find any.

Mederick decides to ask around with the neighbors. One woman, who lives next door, says, "The Cap'n's family? I don't rightly know, m'lord, they must have gone somewhere. Thing is, I didn't see no one preparing for a vacation or nothin' like that. I like to keep an eye on the neighbors, see, just to make sure they're okay is all.

"I remember seeing the Cap'n's wife and daughter outside hanging some sheets to dry t'other day, then the next morning, when I would usually see them picking herbs before breakfast, they weren't there. Right weird it was. Like they just disappeared. This was, oh, two days ago."

Kirill skims the note and finds it quite surprising. The author, whoever it may be, admits to kidnapping Talfryn's wife and daughter. The note gives explicit instructions for Talfryn to appear at the warehouse at a certain time, remove the tribute and load it onto certain designated wagons. I do not desire to die today. But perhaps there is more to this tale. I know not what evidence you have against this man, but even if he did do it, he is clearly not going to take us to the tribute. The group arrives at the guardhouse to find Gersemi poking around in the bushes outside. Halvard is inside, talking loudly and angrily.

The guards move off to the side, waiting, appearing happy to have a break from the tension of the situation. One pulls out a small flask and passes it around. Given the stress of the night, it doesn't seem too inappropriate.

You move inside, and Halvard immediately rushes up to Talfryn. "She's escaped!" he yells. "That dirty, thieving woman escaped! We need to find her, cap'n! If we weren't sure before, now we know she did it!"

Halvard's word is good: you see an empty cell, it's door closed just as it was when last you were here, and an open, empty cabinet next to it. The room is still orderly and neat, there clearly wasn't a struggle, or even a rushed escape.

Outside, you hear Gersemi yell, "Ah ha!" One of the guards calls out in surprise. "What's that there?" A moment later, Gersemi enters the room, holding on to a wriggling, struggling groundhog.

everyone is together now. Talfryn, Mederick, Gersemi, Kirill and Aldo are present, along with Halvard, and several guards waiting outside.

I turn to Aldo " What did you have in mine for negotiating with them. What is your plan?"

Before the mayor can explode, Kirill tries to distract him, quickly stepping between the mayor and the captain, "Look, let's find the tribute. Conversation continues, with accusations made by the Mayor, though no one seems to back him up. Apparently, Mederick has learned that Talfryn's wife and daughter have left town in the past few days, rather apruptly, and believes this is evidence of Talfryn's guilt. Talfryn doesn't bite on the attack, though the two of them seem close to an explosion.

Gersemi thinks she can coax the groundhog in her arms to give some information as to the thief's exploits upon "leaving" the guardhouse.

Since this is all conversation right now, feel free to post extra to keep the talk going, and if any action is taken, tell me; for instance, does Gersemi cast a spell on the groundhog?

To Gersemi "Do your magic thing and see what the groundhog can do or know, but do it out side please as that thing stinks!"

Then I turn to Kirill and Halvard "Wait for me outside while get things in order here and will continue you looking for the tribute." and I nod for them to leave the guard house.

To the mayor "My family is a personal thing and not of importance right now, the tribute is. we can discuss that at a later time."

Kirill, Aldo and Gersemi, deciding that discretion is most certainly the better part of valor, decide to step outside and let the men hash out their dispute. One of the guards pokes his head into the guardhouse, but doesn't act on Mederick's command. "Arrest the cap'n?" he asks, quite nervously. "I'll, um . . . I'll let Lieutenant Halvard serve you sir!" With that, he steps back outside, calling to the other guards to stay close.

Halvard, meanwhile, raises an eyebrow and the Mayor, but doesn't move to arrest Talfryn. "Mr. Mayor, sir, I'll wait outside while you and the cap'n here talk, then I'm happy to step back in and help resolve this." With that, he, too, steps outside.

Mederick Highlight to display spoiler: {You and Talfryn are, I assume, going to be talking alone, and you're likely about to receive some sensitive information. Make sure to post in spoiler for anything that only you, me and Talfryn should be privy to.}

Outside, Gersemi goes ahead and casts the spell on the confused, nervy groundhog. Gersemi has a whispered conversation with it, and the rest assume she is asking about the location, or at least the recent activity, of the escaped thief. With a squeek, the groundhog jumps out of Gersemi's arms and runs down the street a bit, sniffing along the way. It stops and looks back at Gersemi, presumably waiting for the wizard to follow.

He is, in point of fact, quite intimidating about the whole thing, and Mederick takes pause as he sizes up the situation.

Before Mederick can even respond, Talfryn slams a small note down on the desk. Mederick picks it up and reads it over. "As soon as someone shows up, we'll go for a priest, just sit back and try to be still." He keeps yelling for more guards.

Kirill and Gersemi Highlight to display spoiler: {The acolyte brings you inside and whispers to another young acolyte, who goes running off into the back of the temple, through a door behind the chapel. A few short moments later, Rolanda emerges, clearly annoyed. "Yes? What is it? I'm trying to prepare my people for the disaster we're about the face. Preparing medicines, surgery supplies, I don't have much time gentlemen."}

Aldo Highlight to display spoiler: {You hop up on the wagon and head for the gates. You don't pass anyone in the streets, and arrive at the gate in short order. "Halt!" calls out a guard. He approaches with his partner and looks everything over. Hearing your words, he looks to his partner, and both seem unsure what to do. "Well, Master Withershott, it's just that . . . well we have orders not to let anyone in or out. We aren't supposed to open this gate for anything without the Cap'n's say-so." His eyes widen at the sight of the purse, and he and his companion eye each other. Is that greed in their eyes? Maybe so . . . .

I rolled against the bluff check. I gave you a -10 penalty since the lie is unlikely, and you still won. I also rolled a diplomacy roll for you, got a 23. The DC would be 15, so the roll is enough to move his attitude from indifferent to helpful.

The guards whisper to each other for a moment, then the first one comes back. "Sir, ah . . . well, I understand the need here, and I know it can't hurt to let a few folks out, especially those what can't fight real well. Beggin' your pardon of course, sir." He pockets the coin purse and thanks you profusely while his companion eyes it. He heads over to the gate and works the gear mechanism, and a moment later the gate starts to creak open. Just as it finishes opening, you hear shouting from the wall above. "Close the gate!!!! What are you doing you damned fools?!?!" You can see a few more soldiers running for the stairs that lead from the wall down to the street. You find yourself sitting on your wagon in front of the open gate, your men piled on the top, and the two soldiers looking around, unsure how to act.

Cackling with glee, you toss some coins in the air as you head out of the gate. A moment later, a few of the guards must realize something is amiss, and you hear a few arrows being fired. A few stick into the goods on your wagon, and unfortunately one of your men takes an arrow in the back and falls from the wagon, though it doesn't stop your mad escape. I'd assume Aldo wouldn't care in the least

Soon enough, you find yourself on the road into the wilderness, well away from town. It's likely you'll never be able to return, though given the value of the goods in your wagon, that doesn't seem like much of a problem. You'll have some issues selling the goods safely and without questions, but it wouldn't be fun any other way! Just thinking about the hobgoblins storming the walls of that gods-forsaken town makes you smile as you head off to your destiny.

You show her the window. "This is next to my quarters! Come with me!" She rushes off to her quarters. You find the door unlocked, much to her chagrin. She goes into the room and looks around. "My journal! My journal was on my desk and it's missing! What do you know of this, fools?"

Before you can answer, an acolyte bursts into the room. "Rolanda!" he exclaims, out of breath. "The mayor has been stabbed. They say it was Captain Talfryn! He need help, he's dying!" Without further ado, Rolanda runs out of the room and heads for the guardhouse at full speed. Having nothing else to do, you follow her.

"Sir, we'll figure this out. You know we're all behind you."

Turning to the Mayor, the guard says, "Your Excellency, we're going to get you taken care of. Cap'n won't lay a hand on you again, but if I find you've truly killed his family, you'll not escape my wrath. Guards! Secure the area!"

Several long moments go by, then a guard runs back in, trailing Rolanda, Kirill and Gersemi.
}

Entering the guardhouse, Rolanda, Kirill and Gersemi find a strange scene: Mederick is laying on the floor, bleeding profusely. Talfryn is cornered by a guard, his sword coated in blood. The other guards, 5 in all, are standing between the mayor and the captain, arguing about what to do. "The mayor killed his family!" one cries. "We don't know that!" says another.

While the guards continue arguing, Rolanda pushes past the guards and kneels by Mederick. She begins binding his wounds.

The scene in the guardhouse remains tense and confusing. None of the guards are quite sure what to do. A few move to protect the mayor, though by their glances at Talfryn, they are obviously worried about facing their own captain. Others move to Talfryn's side, brandishing their swords. "Captain, what's this about your family, sir?" one asks, a look of genuine concern on his face.

Rolanda, cursing quite un-priestess-like, lays her hands on Mederick's chest and prays. A soft white light shines, and the Mayor's chest wound begins to close, ever-so-slowly.

Kirill and Gersemi stand by, obviously unsure what to do. "Sirs, maybe you should wait - " one guard begins to say to them.

Suddenly, two more guards burst into the room; or, at least they try, having trouble fitting through the door into the already-crowded guardhouse. "Cap'n!" one shouts. Looking around, he realizes something is amiss. "Holy gods!" he exclaims.

Another continues, "Sir! A wagon just went through the gates! Several men were riding it, and it got away before we could stop it! Two of our men let it out, and we found this on them." He tosses a purse on the floor, and gold coins spill out of it. "We have those two fools under guard outside, and we captured one of the men from the wagon. He's barely conscious. We got an arrow into him, but he's still able to talk. We . . . questioned him . . . Master Withershott was driving the wagon. Sir, I'm sorry. He got away . . . ."

Rolanda and several guards remain behind to guard Talfryn and Mederick, and the rest rush back to the gate, Kirill and Gersemi in tow. They find Halvard screaming orders to organize a search party. Indeed, the gate stands open . . . .

Hours later, a search party returns empty-handed, having found nothing but wagon tracks along the road. Either Aldo's wagon was too fast, or the search commenced too late; either way, panic ensues among the guards, barely contained by Halvard's presence.

A separate party of guards canvasses the town, and turns up no evidence of the thief formerly a resident of the town jail. Talfryn shamedly admits that he released the thief in the hope of her learning more about the tribute theft. He also produces a parchment from his pocket, which proves that his wife and daughter are indeed missing, and not by design. The note says that the Captain's family were kidnapped, and were being held for ransom against Talfryn's cooperation -- he was ordered to invade the tribute warehouse, load the treasure onto a wagon, and deposit it into a separate warehouse; if he did not comply, his family would be killed.

Shortly before dawn, Talfryn's wife and daughter stumble into town, clearly the worse for wear. A note pinned to the daughter's dress reads, "Captain. You were true to your word, and I am true to mine. I produce your family, mostly unharmed. Though I did not kill them, I don't know how long they will last given your impending visit from the hobgoblins. Please thank the townsfolk for me, they certainly provided ample wealth to support me for a long time to come, and I am quite appreciative. Yours, Aldo Withershott."

Northbrook, it seems, is doomed to a terrible fate . . . .

As expected, a large party of hobgoblins emerges from the nearby woods at dawn. They find the wall manned with every guard in town. A large, burly hobgoblin approaches and yells, "Northbrook vermin! Where is our gift? You have three candle-marks to produce it, or we will lay waste to this pathetic village!"

With the next town days away, Northbrook is alone for this struggle. Things do not bode well for the usually-peaceful town . . . .

I've made Aldo's last few posts public so you can have a more thorough story should you wish to read it. Feel free to read any and all spoilers should you wish to see how events unfolded over the module.

You collectively have a choice to make:

Since both the thief and the merchant escaped, fulfilling their victory conditions, no one else's victory conditions can be fulfilled (unless you somehow win this fight, should you try). However, if you want, we can play out the hobgoblin battle just for fun. Who knows, maybe it could work out?

You are faced with 100 angry hobgoblins.

You have at your disposal:

1. Your collective wits, powers, and weapons.
2. 10 level 1 clerics (the acolytes), along with Rolanda, a level 5 cleric.
3. 30 town guards, all level 1 fighters, along with Halvard, a level 5 fighter.

I'll put it to a vote: let me know how you want to play this. Halvard, true to form, votes in favor of a fight, no matter how desperate it may be. Rolanda, also true to form, is terrified of a fight, and decides to barricade the townsfolk inside the temple, to pray for salvation and hope for the best.

So, the vote stands 1 to 1, and I'll let the rest of you decide.

Seal Rewards

Decla and Aldo completed their victory conditions. If anyone's condition includes "beating the hobgoblins" we'll address that depending on what happens.

BOTH Decla and Aldo receive the following:

"Hobgoblin Seal of the Slimy Wet Fish."
This seal, worn or carried on your person, can be drawn and tapped to activate as a free action. On activation, it places a piranha in the your hand. The piranha must be thrown at an enemy in the same round, requiring a standard action to throw. Make a ranged touch attack with a range increment of 20 ft. If you miss, the fish disappears. If you hit, the piranha bites down, dealing 1d4 damage per round for 1d3+1 rounds to your enemy, after which it suffocates, falls off, and disappears. Damage reduction applies to the piranha's bite, as well as any hedge that acts against summoned creatures. If you are level 8-14, your piranha inflicts 2d4 per round, and if you are level 15+, your piranha inflicts 3d4 per round. This seal expires after one year if not used, and counts against the five magic item limit that applies to lotto prizes and Yule gifts.

ALDO ONLY receives the following additional seal:

"Gnomish Seal of the Haggler."
This seal, worn or carried on your person, can be drawn and tapped to activate as a free action, and remains active for 24 hours or until used. In any situation outside combat, you gain a +10 bonus on the Diplomacy or Intimidate check of your choice. There is a 20 percent chance of failure, and if the seal fails, there is a 50/50 chance that the Diplomacy or Intimidate check will suffer a -5 penalty instead. This seal expires after one year if not used, and counts against the five magic item limit that applies to lotto prizes and Yule gifts.

Both of you please copy and paste these seals into an email and send it to your permanent game DMs (I don't know who they are). Please copy me on the email.

As an interesting note... I just checked the victory conditions for Kirill. They state, "Whatever else happens, you must leave town at dawn to get where you're going."

I would humbly suggest that when the group headed to the gate and sent out a search party, that Kirill would go with them... and quickly disappear, well on his way away from town and on to this appointment.

I'm not saying that *I* would do that, mind you, but I'm pretty sure Kirill would head out of that town as fast as he could once that gate was opened -- he has places to go!

I want to help the town in any way I can, and determine how the theft occurred. I suggest we gather every crate in the city and put it in the warehouse, along with anything that looks valuable and any oil, kerosene or alchemist fire we have. When they start collecting the crates we lock them in and torch the place. We will need every citizen in the city ready to storm the warehouse and pile furniture, wagons, and anything that can barricade the doors.

Matt C (DM)
Thursday October 16th, 2014 5:58:02 PM

You know, you're right Jeff. I overlooked that, and Kirill can easily fulfill his VC. I think you should get the first seal (the fish one) as well.

Unfortunately, Mederick can no longer fulfill his VC at all, since his was to find the tribute.

Gersemi has fulfilled part of her VC: finding out who stole the tribute. That part is easy. The second part is to beat the hobgoblins (since the tribute is gone, that's the only option)

Talfryn has fulfilled part of his VC: getting his family back safe. That, too, was easy. The second part is the same as Gersemi. Since the tribute can no longer be saved, the hobgoblins must be beaten.

Mederick wants to hole up in the temple. That leaves the vote 2-1 in favor of hiding. If both Gersemi and Talfryn vote to fight, we'll do the goblin fight and see if they can somehow survive. I've been having fun working up some mental notes on how to handle a raiding force storming the walls of a town. Could be fun, though you'll all have to give me a bit of a margin for error, I've never run a fight like that before. I say we do it, but I'll leave it to you two to decide.

Have you looked at the Pathfinder Mass Combat Rules?

Matt C (DM)
Monday October 20th, 2014 10:56:35 AM

I'm going to use that rule set, it looks good.

Here is what we need to do:

You're going to get one round of ranged attack before the goblins reach the walls. Below are the stats I compiled using that rule set.

Hobgoblin Army
HP: 5
ACR: 1/2
DV: 13
OM: +1

Human defenders
HP: 2
ACR: 1/8
DV: 19
OM: +0

Each round, each army rolls an attack using its OM, against the opponents DV. Any damage reduces the enemies HP. First army to reach 0 HP is routed.

Captain Talfryn gives the defenders the "bloodied but unbroken" boon - at half HP, add 1 to combat attack rolls.

We'll start with a round of ranged fighting while the hobgoblins close in on the wall, then its hand-to-hand. Talfryn and Gersemi should keep an eye out for anything else that comes up.

Battle For Your Lives!

Matt C (DM)
Monday October 20th, 2014 12:28:09 PM

The scared townsfolk mostly run for the temple, hoping for a few moments of safety before the end is upon them. A few of the more hearty folk lend a hand in dragging bundles of arrows, large rocks, any anything else that might be found to give the defenders a slight edge.

Outside, the hobgoblins are obviously aware that no tribute will be forthcoming, and their leaders start organizing the ranks into more or less acceptable lines, preparing for a charge. Hobgoblins with long, twisted bows stand at the rear, stringing their bows and stabbing some arrows out into the ground in front of them.

Soldiers fill out the walls as best they can, spreading thin to cover the most wall possible. Men ready their bows, and boys run back and forth along the rampart, dropping off arrows, delivering swords and axes and clubs.

Halvard stands on the rampart, just above the gate, yelling encouragement at his men and insults at the hobgoblins. Most of it is lost in the noise of screaming townsfolk and soldiers giving last minute orders, though you catch a few comments as to the quality of the hobgoblins parentage and the perils to befall their genitals.

In the midst of all of this, you see a white flag go up from the hobgoblin camp. Two enormous hobgoblins, and one small, frailer hobgoblin, saunter out into the field. The frail one wears deep red robes and a necklace of human bones. He is most likely the tribe's shaman. The other two are champions of some sort or other. You recognize the taller of the two by his headdress and his loud voice - this is the hobgoblin leader. The other, then, is likely some sort of lieutenant.

"Send out your leaders!" the warchief bellows. "We will talk before this day becomes even bloodier." They wait in the field, about 10 yards from the gate, the hobgoblin host still 50 or more yards away.

I grin slightly as I whisper to my new companions. I have never been in such a battle, but many a book have I read on the subject. We must be trixy, and that is my specialty. Just like the town hall meeting where I set the mayor's pants on fire and he was too distracted to control the meeting, the commander of the hobgoblins must be able to communicate with the army (possibly using message spells and similar magical forms of communication) in order to give orders or provide a bonus on the army's rolls.

They are well trained, and should wait for orders. If we take them out then we severely handicap them...same goes for our me, so don't go out there and let them catch you. Start by having our archers target the areas around the commanders. We (PCs) have the best aim. We should attack the leaders with arrows and spells as well. I will try to keep them from issuing commands via magic.

ooc: I recommend attacking now and forgoing negotiations. If they kill us we are severely handicapped and I do not think hobgoblins are honorable. Since they are bunched together it makes them prim for an attack.

Also, since 1/4 of our force is clerics, can we instruct them all to cast summon creature this first round and then every round there after have 2/3 attack and 1/3 channel energy to heal us (or CLW if the enemy is too close)?
(I like eagles for the 2 talon attacks and bite. It makes a good full round attack)

If everyone agrees, I think it might be wise to have the lvl 5 cleric summon a lantern archon because of it aura:
Any hostile creature within a 20-foot radius of an archon must succeed on a Will save (DC 13) to resist its effects. The save DC is Charisma-based, and includes a +2 racial bonus. Those who fail take a --2 penalty on attacks, AC, and saves for 24 hours or until they successfully hit the archon that generated the aura. A creature that has resisted or broken the effect cannot be affected again by the same archon's aura for 24 hours.

Another option would be to cast silence on the Shaman.

I will do what I can to help. I have only used these rules once before, and we were fighting an army, not controlling one. However it looks like you rolled correctly to me.

If the DM is generous he will consider attacking like that being Dirty Fighters: Your army uses trickery and unfair tactics to gain an advantage at the start of a battle. For one Melee phase this battle, its OM increases by 6. (After that Melee phase, the opposing army knows to be ready for such tricks.)

I instruct the clerics to cast summon creature this first round. (If the goblins have to climb the wall I will position them to attack the climbers, otherwise they will be dispersed among our me).and then every round there after have 2/3 attack (follow Talfryn's instructions) and 1/3 channel energy to heal us or CLW if the enemy is too close. If they cannot cast without triggering an AoO or think it would result in their death they are to switch to fighting and follow Talfry's lead.

(I like eagles for the 2 talon attacks and bite. It makes a good full round attack)
(I know my instructions are complicated, but I am thinking you convert 2/3 to fighters after round 1 and the others will result in decreasing the HP we lose each round by a DM determined %. Similarly it might be easiest to reduce the enemy's defense slightly or increase the damge they take each round by a DM determined % to count for the archon).

Eagle
Lantern Archon

I personally cast fireball centered on the 3 leaders for 18dmg, reflex 18 for 1/2 dmg.

I'll wait for Talfryn before handling all of this, but just so I'm clear, Gersemi is throwing a fireball at the three leaders while they are waving a white flag? Not that I'm complaining or trying to persuade you, I just want to be clear on your actions.

Yes. As a forced slave facing possible mass genocide I have little inclination to surrender to my oppressors, and have no reason to trust their white flag. As the army fires arrows, per Captain Talfryn's orders, and as the clerics begin summoning per my orders I will cast my fireball at my hobgoblin masters.

Gersemi rallies the town's divine and magical resources, and the clerics begin their summonings. The walls are soon crowded with eagles, their talons snapping and ready for battle. I increased the defending arm's hp by 1 and acr went from 1/8 to 1/4 due to the additional summoned defending forces

Before the chieftain can even finish his words, an arrow flies from Talfryn's bow, followed closely by a blazing ball of fire from Gersemi's fingertips. The surprise barely registers on the hobgoblins' faces before their world explodes in a storm of fire and smoke,

Talfryn's arrow buries itself deeply into the chieftain's shoulder, though his cry of rage is unheard over the fireballs explosion. The shaman is caught in the middle of the blast, though the other two hobgoblins are able to turn their bodies and at least shield their faces slightly from the fires.

Once his robes stop smoking, the shaman smiles and points a finger at the gates. A fireball, much like Gersemi's, erupts from his outstretched hand and blasts the gate from mere yards away, shattering the wood into hundreds of tiny shards and splinters.

Meanwhile, a hail of arrows erupts from the battlements, dropping tens of hobgoblins in a bloody swatch of destruction. Eagles fly down and claw and bite the eyes of any fallen hobgoblins that try to move or crawl away.

A moment later, a volley flies forth from the hobgoblin lines. A few defenders are unlucky to be hit, and fall from the walls, but for the most part, the strong wooden walls block any of the arrows from causing much damage.

The hobgoblins charge, and hit the walls with a resounding thud, and begin scaling the walls to reach the defenders at the top.

At the same time, the three hobgoblins charge into the shattered gate, looking around for anyone or anything to ravage. Halvard stands ready to meet them, and though he stands alone, he doesn't waver. "Cap'n! Wee wizard! Come and help me put this rabble down!"

If he doesn't want to do it, either Earl or James will need to. I don't want to play the enemies AND one of the allied PCs against each other, I'd rather players direct all PC actions.

The hobgoblins begin scaling the walls, and the defenders switch to what little they have in the way of siege defense equipment - a few buckets of burning pitch, some large rocks, and other sharp things gathered from around town. While some throw anything they can find at the climbing hobgoblins, others draw swords and prepare for a melee on the wall. The eagles continue to harry the enemy at every turn.

Neither side of the battle succeeds in doing much harm to the other. The makeshift weaponry thrown at the hobgoblins mostly bounces off their armor, and the hobgoblins aren't able to do much in the way of attacking while climbing the walls.

Neither army's OM roll exceeded the opponent's Defense Value (DV), and no true damage dealt on either side.

Meanwhile, the developing battle between the hobgoblin leaders and the three champions of Nothbrook continues.

Gersemi hurls several glowing darts at the Shaman, each of which crashes into his chest, sending him reeling for a moment.

Talfryn sets his feet as the hobgoblin chieftain closes the distance, and throws his whole body into a massive swing. He takes the chieftain by surprise; clearly the enormous hobgoblin is not used to such aggressive, brave enemies. Talfryn's sword cuts through the hobgoblins armor and scores a deep gash in its chest.

Roaring a battle cry, the chieftain raises his own sword and brings it crashing down onto Talfryn, but the Captain is able to deflect it at the last second, and it bounces harmlessly off of his blade. Meanwhile, the other hobgoblin runs toward Talfryn, not caring a whit for his own safety, and takes a swing as well. The captain proves just how skilled he is, and narrowly avoids that blow as well.

The battle rages all around you as the hobgoblins gain the walls. Arrows continue to fly back and forth, while many defenders find themselves caught up in vicious hand-to-hand combat. The defenders no longer have the protection of the wooden walls, but ultimately, it proves unimportant. The town guard throw hobgoblins from the height of the wall, drop burning pitch and rocks onto their heads, and hack into them as they climb. The eagles soar through the air, ripping and clawing at the eyes of any hobgoblins they can reach.

The hobgoblin raiders look around and find themselves surrounded by their dead, while the humans on the walls continue to hack and slash away at the living. They don't seem to have any more will for this fight. Those few left standing on the walls jump off, and the tattered remnant of the horde runs for the woods, eagles harrying them from the rear.

Attackers' OM roll 5, no damage. Defenders' OM roll 19, exceeds DV by 6. Hobgoblin army HP reduced from 3 to 0, full rout

Three hobgoblins remain, either unfazed by their army's retreat, or uncaring in the face of death.

Seeing his guards win the day, Halvard is energized and roars a mighty battle cry as he charges the chieftain. His flail lays into the hobgoblins arm, crushing and rending the armor. The chieftain cries out in fear and rage, and before he has time to recover from the blow, Talfryn's longsword bites into his side, scoring another nasty gash.

Gersemi, meanwhile, hurls another set of glowing darts at the Shaman. One of the darts buries itself in the Shaman's eye, and he falls to the ground, silent and lifeless.

Enraged, the chieftain swings his sword at Talfryn, landing two solid blows on the captain. hits AC 29 and 27, second a crit. Damage total 25

Those of you not giving chase KILL those two goblins!!! and direct any eagles giving chase after them. I then cast Hidious Laughter on the Champion (Will save DC 17 or he can take no actions for 5 rounds) hoping it will give the Captain some much needed respite....
Where is that bloody mayor. After this they ought to put me in charge. I was the only one willing to investigate matters, understanding that stepping on a few toes and ruffling a few feathers could have prevented all this. I am posting before Gersemi or Talfryn's battle actions because Halvard managed to mop things up all by himself, so no need for more attacks.

Before Gersemi or Talfryn can act further, Halvard gives a mighty bellow and swings his flail. He feels a satisfying crunch as the heavy metal club connects solidly with the chieftain's head, crushing it in on one side and sending the hobgoblin to the ground. He is dead before he lands.

Several soldiers rush in. Two grab Talfryn and drag him to Rolanda, who immediately sets about healing some of his more heinous wounds, while four more surround the hobgoblin champion. Spears are leveled at the hobgoblin's neck, and his hands and feet are bound behind him. Quick as a flash, by the time his spell-crafted laughing fit subsides, he finds himself trussed up and looking up at several angry, war-weary guards.

More guards run to the gates, and begin piling the broken pieces along with any other junk and detritus they can find, fashioning a make-shift barrier in case any of the enemy decides to return. Once the wall is more or less whole again (or, at least, providing a solid barrier against entry), the soldiers gather around, shaking hands, patting each other on the backs, and helping their wounded comrades get to the priests for healing.

Too many bodies lay inside and outside the wall, and the celebrations are more somber because of it.

Once the initial jubilation of victory passes, the guardsmen quickly turn to handling casualties. The dead are moves to one side, put into rows and covered with their cloaks, awaiting proper burial. The wounded are triaged and taken for care as best as can be provided.

Soon thereafter, Mederick arrives, fresh from the temple, and begins to congratelate the guards. Not surprisingly, he is coldly received, and most of the attention is heaped upon Talfryn, along with the other heroes of the battle.

Once the wounded are seen to, townspeople flock to the scene, bearing food and drink, and doing their utmost to ply the guardsmen and the heroes with food, drink and celebration.

Within days, the gate is repaired, and the townsfolk share a renewed sense of safety. One can only assume that without the prospect of sharing the town's wealth with a bloodthirsty horde of beasts, Northbrook can only prosper from here. Charges are never brought against Talfryn. While Mederick is very vocal in his complaints that the captain nearly killed him, he cannot produce a single guardsman to testify to the attack, and despite his very vocal outrage, the matter is largely ignored.

Soon enough, a town referendum is passed, and voters flock to the temple to cast their vote of no confidence in Mayor Mederick. Elections are held, and Talfryn and Gersemi both campaign for mayor. Gersemi, at first, wins by a landslide, though it is soon discovered that the majority of votes cast in her favor came from deceased citizens of Northbrook. Once the prank is uncovered, Gersemi removes herself from the race. Her consession speech is almost unintelligible, as it is filled with laughter and cackles of glee as she pokes fun at the gullible voters of Northbrook who might even have possibly supported her.

Talfryn assumes his new post as mayor of Northbrook, appointing Halvard as the new Captain of the Guard. He fires most of the mayoral staff (which was full of redundancy and nepotistic positions in any case).

Nothing is found of the thieves. Runners are sent to all of the villages and towns within reasonable distance of Northbrook, but no reliable leads are found, and it seems Aldo and his cohorts have escaped beyond the reach of the town's resources.

All in all, the townsfolk are satisfied. Yes, a disgusting, dirty thief escaped with a large amount of valuables, but at the same time, Northbrook is now free of the hobgoblins, and the tribute need never be paid again. The locals regard it as a victory, and another referendum is passed declaring a holiday on the anniversary of the hobgoblin defeat - "Mederick's Comeuppance," it is called.

Congratulations! EVERYONE is now awarded both seals previously mentioned. Please email seal descriptions to your DMs, and copy me on the emails. My email is mcarucci311@gmail.com. Don't use my old email (which might still be the one in the Wold email list), because I can't access it anymore.

Well played, everyone. This has been a very, very enjoyable experience for me, and I hope you all had a good time playing the module.

GAMEZONE

The gamezone is divided into squares. These squares take approximately ten minutes for a typical tribute to traverse at walking speed (300'). You are capable of observing terrain within one square of your position, and your map will be updated as you travel. When traveling, Perception and Stealth checks will be required from every tribute for each square they enter. If a Perception check defeats a Stealth check, then an encounter has been initiated. Encounter distances for different terrains are noted in the Terrain section.

TERRAIN

There is a variety of terrain present in the gamezone, with associated effects upon travel, observation, and personal safety. Colors on the map denote the following:

Plains (light green) - Softly rolling hills of knee-high grass. Perception: No effect. Stealth: No effect, +5 bonus if lying prone. Encounter Distance: 1 square.

Forest (dark green) - Temperate woodlands filled with a mix of old-growth deciduous and evergreen trees, thick foliage, and criss-crossing animal paths. Perception: -5 penalty on all checks. Stealth: +5 bonus if moving at half speed. Total concealment if you are aware of another tribute, they are not aware of you, and you take no movement. Encounter Distance: 200 feet.

Swamp (brown) - A boggy mire of knee-deep water interspersed with mud and small hillocks of firm soil. A thick fog covers the area. Half movement at all times. Perception: -5 penalty on all checks. Stealth: No effect. Encounter Distance: 100 feet.

Water (blue) - Rivers and lakes cut through the gamezone. The waters flow lazily, and require a DC10 Swim check to cross. Perception: No effect. Stealth: No effect. Encounter Distance: 1 square on the surface, 15 feet under the surface.

Ash (gray) - Volcanic badlands, littered with boulders and crags. Survival checks to find food or water automatically fail. Perception: No effect. Stealth: +5 bonus if moving at half speed. Encounter Distance: 200 feet.

Pyroclastic Field (red) - Geysers of flame and soot dot this landscape. Survival checks to find food or water automatically fail. There is a 20% chance while traveling through this square (10% chance during combat rounds) that you are subjected to a gout of flame bursting from the ground. 2d6 fire damage, Reflex DC15 for half damage. Encounter Distance: 100 feet.

Cave (black) - Numerous caves dot the gamezone. What lies within is unknown.

MAGIC

A powerful barrier of abjuration magic envelopes the gamezone, blocking any attempts at dispelling or circumvention by characters of your level.

- No object, creature, or person may be conjured or teleported to outside of the barrier.
- Creatures and objects may be summoned or conjured from outside of the barrier to the inside without difficulty.
- You cannot ascend more than 60 feet above the ground. Please note that creatures or characters flying at 60 feet are able to observe 2 squares while exploring rather than 1 square.
- You cannot descend more than 60 feet below the ground.

TRACKING

Successful use of the Survival skill and Track feat will provide bonuses to Perception checks to locate other tributes.
