To boldly go where the Teucri went. (Co-DM JonathanT)
Thursday November 13th, 2014 12:32:00 AM

Inspector Auslander assures all that the alleged portal will be well guarded at all times, considering that Socraterius is still loose.

As the swirling blackish holish thing beckons, Bosk jumps at the opportunity to be the first to see the Teucri in many centuries and jumps into the swirling blackish holish thing, trusting that it is indeed a portal.

Katinka at first thinks it might be best to rest up some but Sesha grabs Restlin's hand as the mage starts to go through and they both go through arm-in-arm.

Garret isn't going to be left behind and follows, calling back to Katinka, and the halfling resigns to whatever fate lies beyond and goes through too.

Beri quotes a quotable quote and vanishes into the swirls.

DM JT: presumably Kyan will come too.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Time has no meaning as the IA members whirl through a void of blackness streaked by soft colorful lights. The end of the trip is felt when each feel they are 'slowing down' and an opening appears. Stepping out, the IA are greeted by bright, hot, sunlight.

It is very hot.

It is very bright.

It is dry, hot, and bright.

The desert landscape before you is dry, hot, and bright.
At least it is daytime.

Is this the Teucri Homeland?

The portal opened up in the middle of a cul-de-sac enclosed by a steep escarpment. The cul-de-sac is hard, packed sand and in the middle is the low stone walls of a circular well about 5' in diameter. The cul-de-sac opens up on one side to a vast desert with sand dunes as high as hills.

The steep escarpment is about 100' high and climbing it would be very treacherous.

It is sweltering hot. The suns bake down without mercy. Leave your metal armor out for 10 minutes and you could fry an egg on it. You know you will have to dig deep into your survival skills to make sure you have enough water and food, as the desert before you does not seem to offer much of either.

Sesha's immediate reaction is that of blindness!

The bright Sun doesn't sit well with centuries of Drow cave-dwelling.

"Aaah! Too bright!"

After a few moments, her vision normalizes.

"This heat... it's a lot. Gather around, I can help. The last thing we need is Garret sweating before we meet the Teucri."

Sesha will cast Endure Elements on the party. It is a cantrip for Witches with a duration of 24 hours.

Tink tries to contact the Inspector over the telepathic link. This is to see whether thet have simply been teleported to another physical place in the Wold (Telepathic bond "works over any distance although not from one plane to another").

"Once everyone has their bearings, want me to start scouting ahead?" Tink activates her ring of invisibility, just in case danger knows they have already arrived.

Well, this is not the welcome Restlin was hoping for, but still, it's adventure! He smiles at Sesha as her magic makes things much more comfortable.

First things first, Restlin looks behind him and sees if the portal is still there and open. Restlin's eager to get moving, but he's not doing so without a source of water.

"Bosk, do you have any food or water creation spells available? I can use Shiny here to cast Secure Shelter when we're ready to call it a night, but I don't think we need to go out there without water."

He checks that well to see if it's a natural formation or if it's constructed.

"I picked the wrong day to not prepare any flying spells. Sesha, think you could head up and see if you can spot anything in the distance?"

Bosk thanks Sesha for the comforting spell and chews on his lip as he thinks about what he brought with him. Unfortunately I left my water in the tower this morning. I forgot that I took it out the other day when we needed more room in my Bag of Holding...please remind me when we get back to put it back in my bag. I do have 17 taur sized rations for food and plenty of spices to liven them up along with several gallons of alcohol, and a couple empty containers we can put water in.

Although I do not have anything food related currently prepared spell wise, I had the Lord of Life and Death only give me some of my magical ability this morning. Given a little time I could pray to Gargul to allow me to cast a spell easily able to feed and provide water for up to 24 people. (I believe it will take 15 minutes to prepare). I also have Rose's Temperature Control prepared if the temperature gets out of hand.

As he speaks the cleric scans his surroundings and looks in vain for water...Do you think there might be water down that well? Once we are ready, I have 50ft of rope that we can use to help climb up the wall or down the well, or draw water.

How do you guys not bring water wherever you go? All creatures need water, all plants, it's one of the universal needs of the Wold... it doesn't matter, I keep Create Water as one of my orisons whenever possible so I can help those that may be in need of a little kindness, I suppose today that just happens to be us. Hold out anything you can fill, as well as any clothes you want to drench. I can create 24 gallons each time, so there isn't any worry about water.

How much time do I have left on the though communication spell? I'll probably transform into something more suited for this environment once we finish talking... maybe a hawk. Just let me know any time you may need more water, I have plenty.

To boldly go where the Teucri went. (Co-DM JonathanT)
Friday November 14th, 2014 1:01:53 AM

Sesha at first is disoriented due to the nature of drow in bright sunlight, but she soon adjusts and the sweltering heat gets her to think she doesn't want to meet the Teucri while dripping in sweat, so she gathers all around and casts Endure Elements on each one.

Katinka thanks the witch for the relief and tries to contact the inspector through the telepathic link. She finds no response but quickly realizes that the spell expired at some point during the trip through the portal.

She is eager to go looking around and glances around for the obvious. She sees no plant life anywhere near but she does see tracks all around the area. None are human or humanoid. They look like scratch marks to the untrained eye but obviously not accidental.

Katinka: Highlight to display spoiler: {The stone walls of the well radiate magic.}

Restlin is a little disappointed but shrugs it off. Happy that Sesha made life a little more bearable, his first task is to assess their supplies versus their needs before doing anything else. He looks for the portal opening but sees it wink out just as the last of their group, Kyan, steps out. With that gone, it is imperative to take stock of their food and water supplies and he asks Bosk if he has any water and food creation spells on hand.

Meanwhile he takes a look at the well while lamenting not having any flying spells handy at the moment.

Restlin notes that the well is constructed, its walls made of neatly cut stone blocks. The wall is waist high to medium sized creatures.

Bosk assures the group he has plenty of rations for the time being. As far as long term, he can have a spell ready given some meditation time. He looks down the well. It looks like it is not very deep and there is enough light to see the dry sandy bottom.

DM JT OOC: I said the well was 5' in diameter but I was wrong. It is 10' in diameter. Sorry.

Kyan is disappointed at the harsh surroundings too. He looks around and notices the lack of anything green, the large sand dunes outside the cul-de-sac and how hard it would be to find something to eat out here. He notices the tracks in the sand that covers the floor and just as Katinka deduces, they are not humanoid in nature. The markings are more like a jumble of scratches with no particular discernable direction.

One thing is certain, though, no tracks would last very long in this environment, as the easily shifted sand would erase anything quickly enough.

Beri assures everyone he can produce enough water to drink and take a bath in. The druid tries to communicate via the telepathic link but does not find it active anymore.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The IA get their bearings and find that they are in a desert. The immediate area has not been visited by humanoids recently at least. The easy way out is through the gap in the cul-de-sac, although flying out is a good alternative. Climbing out would be a last resort and for those who enjoy testing the laws of gravity.

Was that a joke? Was Tink attempting humour?

Restlin ponders using Shiny to cast overland flight, but decides to save her daily spell for Secure Shelter later. They could probably survive a night out in these conditions, but why would they want to? He still has his boots of levitation, so worse case scenario he gets pulled behind Tink, Sesha, or Beri.

Eager to see what's beyond this depression, Restlin activates his boots and heads straight up until he can see what's out there.

Well, I'm not too worried about Socraterius. He didn't have the stone, so he probably didn't make it here. What scares me, though, is that we didn't find anything maddening back there. Which means it's possible he had found the stone earlier and come here only to find something that did that to him. Something shocking enough that he caused the chaos that he did. Anything that could do that to a wizard of his caliber is something I'm not in a hurry to meet.

First, some real good news: This module passed the approval test and is approved to continue.
The other good news is that it was designed to kill you. Bwaaahahahahahahahahaha!

Now, back to business:
The IA look around at their surroundings. Katinka notices that the dry well radiates magic. At least the stone walls do. Everyone notices critter marks in the loose sand covering the hard packed dirt in the cul-de-sac.

The magic comes from the conjuration school.

By the position of the suns it is a little past noon. More importantly, the suns look much like the ones you are used to seeing. Same size, shape, distance, brilliance, etc.

DM JT: I think the Wold has two suns. Is my memory correct?

Katinka: Highlight to display spoiler: {One stone at the base of the well wall glows a little stronger.}

Restlin confirms Katinka's suspicion of the myriad scratch marks in the sand to belong to the rare desert chicken. To get a better view of their location, he activates his boots and levitates upwards. Way up there, over 100' up he sees...

Restlin: Highlight to display spoiler: { It is pretty desolate. Past the escarpment, the land is flat and rugged for a long ways until a mountain range on the horizon. Going out from the cul-de-sac leads to a sandy desert with sand dunes as high as hills. However, from the aerial view, he does see a slanting obelisk, maybe a mile or two away.}

Garret takes things in stride and declares his joy of the sun. A good chance to work on that beach tan he's been putting off getting. Without the portal, Hook City seems very far away.

Beri seems intent on spoiling the moment by bringing up Socraterius. Did he get this far? Was it something here that made him go mad?

Bosk tries to counter Beri's worries with the prospect of having songs written about their exploits in the Teuci world.

Kyan quips about the sanity of all wizards and is ready to shove off.

So far not a whole lot to go on, but Katinka and Restlin may have something.

Katinka: Highlight to display spoiler: {The stone block, (they are all stone blocks about a foot long and 1/2 a foot wide), that radiates a stronger magic just happens to have a Teucri rune etched on it and a depression much like the one used for the Memory Stone back in the Teucri Library foyer.}

To boldly go where the Teucri went. (Co-DM JonathanT)

The IA continue to inspect their landing zone. While Katinka looks over what looks like a magic well and points out the same 'keyhole' depression with a Teucri Rune on one of the stone blocks from the well, Restlin points to an obelisk some miles away out into the sand dunes.

Beri queries Kyan about the Memory Stone they used to get here but Bosk points out that the one from the Library fused into the keyhole when the portal was opened. The minotaur has the insight that there may be a Memory Stone nearby, at least he hopes there is.

And Garret scans the blue skies for flying menaces and notices pesky gnats hungry for moisture. Any moisture. Nose, lips, eyes.

So the IA have two things at least on their hot plate: look for a Memory Stone and check out the obelisk.

The hot sandy desert (Co-DM JonathanT)
Wednesday November 19th, 2014 12:18:23 AM

DM JT: Bosk is correct, you don't need to fly out unless you want to. The exit to the cul-de-sac leads into the sandy desert and as Resltin observed, to the leaning obelisk.

Katinka, having determined the way back, or out of this place at least, if they come across a memory stone, decides it is time to visit the obelisk and takes the lead, flying out of the cul-de-sac, avoiding the hot sand on her tiny feet.

At 30' feet up she gets a better view of the desert. It is very sandy and walking is a chore. most sand dunes are low but some are close to 30' or more in height. It is hard to tell distances in the heat waves.

Restlin levitates again and Beri goes into Air Elemental form and tows Restlin along.

DM JT: can an air elemental carry anyone? He's made of air, right? I know you can pick up someone as part of a whirlwind attack, but... :}

Bosk and Kyan follow on terra firma. The Minotaur warns those afoot to watch out for quicksand and scorpions. Kyan wonders how he could have retrieved the Memory Stone without closing the portal and leaving himself behind. He shrugs as he treads through the soft sand outside the cul-de-sac.

Garret peers down the well and notices the sandy bottom has some pebbles. One could be a Memory stone. Can't tell from that distance. The well is about 30' deep. The stone walls down to the bottom offer easy hand holds.

-------------------------------------------------------
DM JT: we'll do some backtrack and work with two threads here if Garret decides to go down the well. Just let me know what he does.

The IA head out of the cul-de-sac and towards the leaning obelisk. Once in the open, there is a breeze. It is still hot, but at least the breeze keeps the gnats away, even if a few gusts get sand in the eyes.

The obelisk grows as the IA get closer. A couple of miles treading sand and the IA finally reach it. It is pretty big. It is square with a triangular top and engraved all along its four sides, from bottom to top, are pictures and writing. The writing is distinctively in Common, but a very old one. The pictures show battle scenes where one side is always the winner.

Linguistics DC30: Highlight to display spoiler: {The writings describe a war between a people called the Yngvardians and the Gaeli, where the Yngvardians are the winners. All Tink can think at the moment is thank Pantheon for Sesha's Endure Elements spell. Even with the spell the temperature feels very warm. And it does nothing for the glare, the insects, or the sun burn that will no doubt occur.

Nevertheless, Tink leads the procession carefully to the obelisk.

Tink hovers about the object, admiring it from all sides and trying to piece everything together. "I believe the scenes depicted here relate to a battle between two peoples. Yes, the Yngvardians and the Gaeli. Hmm... the Yngvardians were clearly the winners. And here, see the scenery? There's a lot of vegetation. If it depicts this area, then it may have been long ago"

Wednesday November 19th, 2014 11:54:43 PM

DM JT: it would appear that the two groups have split up but actually the two threads are time-delay threads. I just want to move the story along. The well exploration happened while Restlin floated up and looked about, Katinka studied the outside of the well, etc. Technically, Garret and Bosk can also post anything they want to do at the obelisk as well.

Katinka takes her time studying the obelisk and the writings while floating up and down the 30' obelisk. She manages to decipher the stories and relates the to her friends. She's heard nothing of the people mentioned in the stories. The stone is not unusual other than it is in a sandy desert. Looks like granite. The shifting sands cover any tracks made by anyone fairly quickly. The tracks make by her friends are already being erased by the gentle breeze.

She does notice, from her height advantage, that there is a trail that runs through the sands and passes by near the obelisk. Going one way would seem to lead away from the desert, going the other way seems to lead into the desert.

Restlin confirms Tink's translations. Investigating the base of the obelisk he finds a little more of the story but only one level more before he finds the foundation block. The tip of the obelisk ends in a point common to obelisk. No bells ring in the mage's head other than the fact that the writing is in an old version of Common that is common to the ancient Woldian peoples.

Beri looks over the obelisk as well. He notices the same things both Restlin and Tink have pointed out but also points out that the images of the two races are not just humanoid but are human as best as the artists could depict. Since no images of Teucri exists, he has no way of knowing if they are Teucri or not. He also notes that the two groups are different in their dress and facial looks. The artists were very good and the weathering has not done much harm to the artistry. The most distinctive aspect is that the loosers seem to sport heavy beards, much like a dwarf's, and their armor and weaponry seems more sophisticated than the winners.

As Restlin points out, history is written by the winners.

Kyan puts the observations together and comes up with a brilliant deduction:
"Maybe this isn't the Place the Tecuri live and is just another part of the Wold where they built Another city..."

One way to find out. Explore! :)

Garret, with Bosk's help holding a rope, quickly slips down into the dry well. He inspects the pebbles down there but none have any runes on them.

Bosk waits until Garret climbs back out and goes down himself for a look. Due to the high position of the sun there is enough light to see at the bottom, although it is in some shadow. Good thing he did too. On a stone on the side of the well already in shadow he spots a block of stone like the one outside that contains a Teucri Rune. This one does not have a depression like the one outside, but the block of stone seems to be missing the mortar around its edges.

What Garret couldn't find the large minotaur does. Checking the area down in the well for traps does not reveal anything and fiddling with the stone block reveals that it is loose. He carefully pulls out the stone with the Teucri rune on it finds a secret compartment behind the loose stone. Bosk pockets the Memory Stone.

Determining which way is north, the faint trail leads deeper into the desert going east and the trail bends south and perhaps out of the desert.

Beri does not detect any imminent sand storm.

The IA so far have voiced their desire to leave the desert. The best bet would be to follow the faint trail south.

Katinka cuts a piece of canvas into squares to use as bandannas for her and her friends to keep the sand and pesky gnats away from their noses and mouths. She informs her friends that if anyone starts to overheat, she can cool things down a bit for a short while.

Taking to the air and 40ft up, she heads south along the vague path ahead of the IA and invisible.

Restlin leans towards leaving the desert as well and accepts Tink's makeshift bandanna.

Bosk reveals the discovery of a Memory Stone. He prefers to see which way is less travelled
and take the most travelled direction. The trail looks well worn where the sand has blown away leaving hard packed earth. Neither direction offers a 'less traveled' look. Odd prints of many four legged animals can be seen in the hard packed dirt. By their shapes, they appear to move in both directions.

Restlin informs Bosk that the toss of a coin made the decision for him and, if Wardd is to be trusted, it points away from the desert.

Garret congratulates Bosk on his find. Traveling on the ground, Garret has the opportunity to pick up a handful of sand an let it sift through his fingers. The hot breeze blows the sand towards what may be the center of the desert.

Beri poses the suggestion that, now with a Memory Stone and a place to put it, maybe they could avoid the desert altogether and zap out of there.

Katinka points out that they just got 'here', wherever 'here' is, and they should at least spend some time looking around. She figures that come nightfall she may be able to tell if they are still somewhere on the Wold or on some other plane by studying the stars.

---------------------------------

The IA have decided that trying to find their way out of the desert is their best option and head southwards following an old but well used path of packed dirt that winds its way through the sands. As the wind blows, the trail comes and goes and it takes some effort to remain on it.

Survival DC20 to stay keep from loosing the trail.

The day comes to and end as the hot sun begins to set. What the night will offer only time will tell. It isn't hard to find a camping spot. The IA can just stop where they are and camp. The gnats still follow the IA and a strange rash appears on exposed skin.

He listens to Tink reveal what the stars are telling her. "We had no idea what we were getting into, and we have no idea what we've gotten ourselves into. At least we can teleport home if we're still in the Wold. Anyway, if we're done star-gazing, we should rest. Shoes off at the door people, no need to track in sand. Sesha is fairly impressed with the spell. All her magic had pretty direct utility, but she had never fathomed that there was magic created for the sake of luxury.

Sesha herself casts a few spells. She figures if her Mage Priest is making the house, she can make the food.

First she performs two castings of Goodberry, and comes up with 10 berries.

"These are pretty tasty, and we've gone over them before. They'll last 11 days, and also perform some healing. If we get separated, they can sustain you very well before digging into your rations."

She splits them among her companions, excluding herself.

Last, she begins the only semi-luxury spell she knows, a casting of Heroes Feast, extended with her metamagic rod.

It doesn't take long for fine scents and smells to begin emanating from Pot-pot, where she is focusing the spell. 10 minutes later, she is ladling out large portions of stew, pulling loaves of bread, and supplying everyone with a honeyed mead.

"Eat and drink all you want.", she beams.

"You'll feel better after having done so. The effect will last well into tomorrow night!"

Heroes Feast: You bring forth a great feast, including a magnificent table, chairs, service, and food and drink. The feast takes 1 hour to consume, and the beneficial effects do not set in until this hour is over.

Every creature partaking of the feast is cured of all sickness and nausea, receives the benefits of both neutralize poison and remove disease, and gains 1d8 (+6) temporary hit points.

The ambrosial food grants each creature that partakes a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and Will saves and a +4 morale bonus on saving throws against poison and fear effects for 12 hours. (18 hours, extended)

He motions to Beri with a loaf of bread. "Hey, remember the first time we holed up in that rope trick spell during the hurricane?" He turns to the rest of the group. "There was this assassin that killed a lot of our friends and a dozen or so perfectly good prostitutes. Slipperiest son-of-a-biscuit I've ever gone up against. He almost got away before Wyarr punched his chest in. Of course, then we found ourselves on the coast as a hurricane came in, so we climbed into this inn, got up on the roof, and cast rope trick to escape for a few hours. The whole inn was gone when we came out. Did a real number on nearby Heranmar too..."

Restlin can be counted on to chat & tell stories. As actual darkness falls, he'll light the fire & ask if Sesha has any marshmallows in that pot.

As everyone enters the magical shelter Bosk tries to go through everything the group has learned. Has anyone ever heard of the Yngvardians and the Gaeli or this battle? The hot sandy desert with a pointy thing sticking out of it (Co-DM JonathanT)
Tuesday November 25th, 2014 11:44:47 PM

The IA find a nice spot to set up camp, which has little in common to 'camping out', with tents that come with an invisible butler and a huge feast produced from an old cauldron. Only thing NOT comfortable is the latrine, which apparently lacks a spell similar to Secure Shelter. The IA just have to relieve themselves the old fashioned way. Did someone think of toilet paper?... oh well, Prestidigitation will work, for those who can cast it.

With some luck, Beri remembers in some obscure papers about life in a desert that one thing that seems near impossible to escape, other than the heat and the sand, is the Sand Mites. They travel on sand kicked up by travelers or the wind and thrive on living flesh. Their 'feeding' leave rash-like markings on the flesh that get very itchy 24hrs after infestation.

Bosk finds that Prestidigitation spell cleans the clothing and armor from sand just fine.

The effects of the Heroes Feast seem to take care of the Sand Mite rash problem, for today.

The IA swap stories of their past adventures while they partake of the feast and watch the night sky unfold with it's millions of stars. If there were fuel for a fire and something called 'marsh mellows', they could sit and roast that squishy delicacy and sing a song about some guy named Michael that rowed a boat to shore.

Bosk ponders about the peoples mentioned in the obelisk, the Yngvardians and the Gaeli, but has no luck digging into his memory for any mention of such people.

When the discussion turns to buildings in the distance Bosk looks back down towards the path...Before we get carried away, does anyone have a way of making sure we can track our way back to this path or the well when this is all done?

Bosk asked 'Can Bosk command his tattoo to kill the mites on his body?'

DM JT: which tatoo would that be?

As they travel the next day, several members discuss their adventures in the Sargrass. One mentions having heard the Sargrass catching fire and wonders if this could be the result.
It would take a catastrophe of immense proportions to change the Sargrass into a desert like this. Even if a fire burned the entire Sargrass area, it would take decades of drought to prevent the grass from growing again and the land turning into a sandy desert. Thus it is not likely that this is the Sargrass.

Then, about mid morning something appears that breaks the monotony of the sand dunes. The IA stop to discuss their new finding, a stone building with some tents erected next to it. They discuss checking it out but also how to find their way back to the trail.

Katinka, Restlin, Beri, and Sesha are flying but only Katinka feels she can successfully scout out the strange stone building unseen.

The building is a couple miles away off the path, do the IA follow at a distance while Katinka scouts it out? if the IA do follow at a distance, how close do they approach the building, 100 yards? 200 yards? 50 yards?

Meanwhile, Katinka scouts the area: Highlight to display spoiler: { The stone building is square in shape. As you approach, you see a number of humanoids going about digging around the building. The intervening space, all around, is flat sand up to the building. There is a pile about 100 feet away where workers are dumping buckets of sand, but unless invisible, not a good option.

The humanoids are removing sand from the building and seem to be about finished. They appear human and carry weapons despite their digging work and stripped down to pants due to the heat.

DM JT errata: (this is what happens when you go by memory and not the notes.)

DM wrote "They appear human and carry weapons despite their digging work and stripped down to pants due to the heat."

It should have read "They appear human and carry weapons and their metal armor shines in the sun despite the heat and their digging work."

DM JT IC:
Up and down 10 and 20 feet dunes the IA make their way to the last dune before the open space to the square stone building. Kyan ops to stay back one dune, so it's down 10 feet of sand and up 10 feet of sand (difficult terrain) to the rest of the ground party.

Garret peeks over the last sand dune and spies out the activity. The diggers carry buckets of sand from inside the building and dump it in a pile some 50 feet away on the other side. They wear breast plate armor and carry longswords strapped to their backs.

This is no pick-nick. There are even a few guards patrolling around the tents and building.

In the few moments you watch it looks like there's around 8 between diggers and guards, plus one that appears to be in charge.

Katinka suggest a friendly direct approach, albeit, on guard, of course. She plans to go on ahead alone.

Restlin agrees that they should first try the friendly approach and the two head off towards the diggers.

Sesha joins the group and follows alongside on her broom.

DM JT: are Tink and Restlin walking or is Restlin floating and Tink flying pulling Restlin along?

---------------------------------------------

By the time the three make it to the bottom of the last sand dune and start heading across the 100 yards of open sand one of the attentive guards see the three and shouts out to his fellows. Buckets are dropped and the diggers scurry towards the guard, who, now joined by the others, points to the incoming trio.

By the time the trio reach half way (50 yards - 150 feet) a line of warriors are lined up facing them, shield to shield, although no weapons are drawn. The one that seemed to be in charge is joined by three others who where in a tent a little bigger than the others.

OOC: Tink has lowered her flight to be around 3ft off the dune surface. Being a Halfling that should put her at about eye level with a human. She's happy to drag ol' Restlin with her :)

"Hello there!" Tink raises an empty hand in greeting and hovers in place "My friends and I are a little lost at the moment. Might I approach to talk? We mean no harm" If the men signal for her to approach, she will do so. She doesn't know if they even speak the same language as her, so does her best to use body language to appear 'friendly' (Diplomacy: 33). She is holding a buckler, but carries no visible weapon.

Tink will keep her eyes peeled for some indication as to who this group might be. Are they all human? Are they all male? She does recall reading in her studies that the Teucri were an all male race. Are there any banners or insignias on the armor she might recognise? Any holy symbols? She may be 150ft away now, but once she hits 120ft her arcane sight will kick in.

Restlin is on foot, but overland flight is still active.

His hands empty, Restlin approaches with Tink and Sesha. He takes a moment to admire Tink's diplomacy. Following her lead, the wizard does his best to look non-threatening (not a hard thing to do for the boy wizard).

Sesha, though her spell is still active, drops next to Restlin. She realizes how this might look, three flying adventurers approaching out of the sand. She slides off her broom, holding it tight in one hand while she takes Restlins arm with the other.

Looks lie they are going to make contact. Should we back them up, or let them try talking first? Immediately Bosk begins calculating the distance between himself and the fliers. As far as diplomacy goes, the minotaur tended to feel like a bull in a china shop...but when things took a turn for the worse he always found intimidation an easier skill to utilize. Perhaps it was that he tended to tower over his foes, even other minotaurs, and his bastard sword as as long as a man.

Stay close to me. If we need I can dim door over to them. he whispers to the others.

By the time the three diplomatic missionaries reach 150' away from the tents, a line of warriors form up, joined by their leaders.

DM JT Note: Dg - warriors, DG - leader types
The 'leader' types are distinguished by their military behavior.

Katinka, 'walking' on air some 3' up hails the digging party and extends the hand of friendship by explaining they are lost and requests that they "approach to talk? We mean no harm"

She does her best to not appear threatening in any way possible.

From 150' away she notices: Highlight to display spoiler: { DG1 seems to be making hand motions typical of casting spells, however he's too far away and obscured by the front line to determine what. So far nothing visible is
noticed.
}

She does not notice any symbols that may indicate who they follow. There are no banners or flags.

Restlin keeps his Overland Flight active but has his feet on the ground and Sesha right next to him, even holding his arm romantic-like to convey an even less threatening stance.

Bosk stays back behind the last sand dune and holds his Dimension Door spell handy just in case things take a downward turn.

Garret clings next to Bosk so he can be whisked up by the minotaur if Bosk activates his Dimensin Door.

While Bosk, Garret, and Kyan try to stay out of sight, Beri maintains his flight and tries to circle non-threatening like, an odd clump of cloud floating around in a desert where the last could seen by anyone in over a hundred years or so.

----------------------------------------------------

Katinka's voice carries loud and clear across the intervening space, the light breeze not hindering it's effectiveness one bit. However, despite the monumental attempt at being nice and friendly, a reply, in Common with a heavy accent, is shouted back by DG2.

"Go away you Scumbags! Keep your flea-infested, scab ridden, filthy, stinking, hairy armpits, far away from here! Go rot in the desert where you belong, you beetle droppings!"

DM JT Note: Google drive has change I'm having trouble figuring out their idiocy. I'll have a map up when I figure out how to do it. :(

My name is Katinka Hushfoot. I've travelled here from Hook City. Perhaps you've heard of it? Magical place built by the Teucri?"

Restlin has decided that he doesn't much like these folk.

Those diggers may be forced labor, though. He's not keen on the idea of dropping any magic on the area that might hurt them. For the meantime, he'll let Tink talk and instead focus on the unarmed diggers, trying to see if they're innocents being exploited, or just more jerks who are better with shovels than swords.

Sense motive - 28: Are the diggers acting like forced laborers, or are they also appearing hostile.

Readied action: If those folks make any hostile moves, AND the diggers appear to be bad guys too, Restlin will cast black tentacles around where DG1 and Dg4 are, capturing DG1&2, plus Dg1-4.

If they make hostile moves AND the diggers don't appear to be bad guys, he'll cast stinking cloud instead.

For now though, she shakes her fist at the men and stamps a booted foot in the sand, which of course, doesn't make half the sound she wants it too.

DM JT: I thought I corrected my first description of the diggers. They all wear armor despite the heat, breastplate armor. When they formed up, they had grabbed shields that were stacked in easy reach (you didn't see them due to the tents). None look like peasants or forced labor.

Katinka tries to be classy in her response to the verbal abuse and introduces herself while moving forward 35' with a smile. Now close enough for her Arcane Sight to be effective, she sees magical auras surrounding DG1, DG2, DG3, and DG4. For more specifics on the auras, she'll need to concentrate (Standard Action) on each.

Despite her friendly reply, she casts and holds a Wall of Force.

Garret whispers to Bosk "Hey, they don't want us here. We don't really want to be here. I think we should just move along. Do we really want to fight over a pile of sand?"

Good point. :)

Restlin gets an immediate dislike for these people. At first he thinks that maybe the diggers are forced labor but when they form up in a shield wall he sees that they move like well trained warriors and wear armor and carry weapons, something that forced labor don't have.

He also anticipates hostile action and casts Black Tentacles and holds it.

DM JT Note: unless your PC sheet specifies that you shave your armpits and legs, you are all hairy there. LOL :)

Bosk squints into the distance trying to see how the dudes react to Sesha's reply.

Beri wishes he could send some lightning bolts at those impertinent twerps. Being a good guy, he maintains his circling position above Bosk.

-------------------------------------------------------------

DM JT: sorry, I meant to add coordinates and forgot. They are there now.

The miasmal stuff erupts around the three IA diplomatic members. Same such stuff hit them not long ago in the foyer of the Teucri, Unholy Blight. He shrugs off the worse of the spell and what damage he would have taken is neatly absorbed by the temporary hit points from the dinner the night before.

With a klick of his heels he shoots straight up 20' and in no mood to continue their attempts to be friendly. Gripping Shiny, he gains the benefit of Fox's Cunning and releases his held Black Tentacles targeting the left flank of the shield wall.

Black tentacles: 10 rounds - CMB 34

DM JT: currious how you calculated the CMB.
Was it: d20 + Caster level (for BAB) + 4 (str mod) + 1 (size)?
That would be d20 + 15(or 17), this round right?
This is how it is described in the spell description.

DM Note: I don't think the Heroe's Feast applies to the Tentacles or other summoned creatures, only to the individuals that ate the food.

Sesha also recoginzes the Unholy Blight spell and her temporary Hps also absorb the damage as she avoids most of it.
She sends a Confusion spell back at the enemy targeting the other half of the shield wall.

DG3,DG4, and Dg5, DC 23 Will

Bosk activates his Dimmension Door spell and takes Garret and Kyan with him, easily traveling the 320 feet disance to behind the shield line and not in the Black Tentacles.

DM JT Note: I think Bosk can only take 2 more, 1 for every 3 caster (wizard) levels. Beri will have to fly, unless I've calculated wrong. It's clear that the caster cannot act after materialization, my guess it also applies to those carried.

Beri takes off after his friends. With his Air Elemental speed he covers the distance 'running'.

DM JT: Run is a Full Round Action. just tell me which co-ordinates to put you at.

Katinka belts out Gah as she also fends off most of the Unholy Blight effects. She immediately goes invisible and staying 3 feet off the ground, flies 40 feet west.

Recap and updating:

Black Tentacles:
Dg1,2,3,4,6 = caught
DG2 = caught
DG1 = caught

DMG = 1d6+4 + grappled = 10

DG3 Will DC23 = 11, %75 = 6 dmg
DG4 Will DC23 = 9, %85 = att DG3, miss
Dg5 Will DC23 = 4, %48 = does nothing.

[d]Garret[/b] Attacks Dg7 doing 14 dmg and staggered for 1d6+1 rounds.
fortitude save DC 21 = 7; Staggered for 2 rounds.

Beri flies at a Run and with heroic effort expells a spell causing a [i]Sleet Storm[/b] to envelope the area around the cluster on the left.

DM JT: to make sure we are on the same page, the left cluster is the same as those in the black tentacles, yes?

Sleet Storm: 40 feet radius and 20 feet high, blocks all sight even Darkvision, icy ground = Move at 1/2 speed with DC10 Acrobatics, fail with 5 or more = fall prone.

The Big Giant Bold Square is the area (roughly) covered by the Sleet storm. It covers almost everyone.

Let's see now what they can do:
If you can see through the Sleet Storm then:
Highlight to display spoiler: { Dg1,2,3,4 pull out potions and drink them (one handed); DG2 goes into a Rage and breaks free (on a N20); DG1's skin goes ashen grey and issues a Battlecry.}

All hear a vigorous Battlecry issue forth from the obscuring Sleep Storm, who done it? None can tell. They also hear someone howl in rage and appears to be moving.

Garret only Highlight to display spoiler: { DG2 comes howling out from the Black Tentacles area and finds himself next to you, managing the icy footing very well. His eyes look wide with an unearthly anger and he swings his Greataxe at you: hit AC21}

Bosk only:[spolier] Dg8 turns to face you and steps forward 5' and attacks twice with longsword: miss both times.[/b]

Talk about the Fog of War!
You'll just have to pretend that you can't see anything within the big box unless you are adjacent to it. I could block it all out but that would be more confusing than it is worth. You know last positions of anyone but that's about it. Also, unless it is a 5' step, you need to make an Acrob DC10 check and move at 1/2 speed.

Bosk is in the Sleet Storm. Kyan and Beri are not. Katinka is still way out there some 115 feet or so away.

Kyan hasn't taken his move so he can take it, with ice and all, for R2, and then do your thing for R3.

Restlin, don't forget to roll the Black Tentacle CMB again.

Tink is at a loss. The sleet storm came from nowhere. It may have been cast by someone in the party, or perhaps, one of those digging guys. Whoever created it got the desired effect though. The two groups were now quite split up. "I think..."

Assuming Tink can hear the sound of combat and fighting, she will know that heading east will get her closer to the action. With that in mind, she flies invisibly along until she reaches the end of the storm (Double Move action to Fly to U30. Still invisible. 3ft in the air)

From her new position she can clearly see the muscle of the party hard at work.

Ooc: note that Bosk has blind fighting, so if an attack misses due to concealment he gets to have the miss chance percentile rerolled. Enemies should ave lost their dex bonus due to concealment, but Bosk keeps his due to blind fighting.
-------------------------------------------

Bosk makes a mental note as to the enemies locations as the sudden sleet storm begins diminishing his vision. As everything becomes a wash in white he becomes thankful for his thick fur and Sesha's endure elements spell. Taking a deep breath the cleric lets his other senses take over and falls back on his training. A crunch of snow and slight breeze give just enough warning for the cleric to sense the man stepping up to him and unleashing a set of deadly attacks, but his training gives him enough of an edge to narrowly avoid the deadly blades.

Eyes closed, the cleric returns blows. For an instant he toys with the idea of using his poison coated horn on the man, but just as quickly he deems it unnecessary...His hooves digging deep as he swings. His aim is not as true as he would have liked, but the knowledge that his training is serving him well gives him a sense of peace.

DM JT: most of the text was in my Notepad copy. One of these days I'll learn to save current work as I go. This is the second or third time I've had my stuff reset inadvertently. :(

A sleet storm rages in the middle of the desert. Go figure. Only the IA could wrangle something like that.

Katinka, at a loss as to how the sleet storm came aboout, triest to approach the area and remains invisible.

Garret does not care how the sleet got there and rather enjoys the cooling effect it has on his feet.

Garret only: Highlight to display spoiler: { Despite the new arrival, he concentrates on his original target. He can't really see him but guesses correctly at his position. Not hard to do since he is Staggered. Still some of his attacks miss due to the sleet, only the first two hitting.

Att1 Miss % = 91, Att1 Miss % = 96, Att1 Miss % = 9, Att1 Miss % = 14, Att1 Miss % = 6
Total damage (R1+R2)= 35
}

Kyan is deprived of all but one target so he sets his aim on that one and fires all cylinders.

Kyan, Beri, Katinka only: Highlight to display spoiler: { Only the first 3 arrows hit but it is enough to crumple DG4.}

DM JT answers questions:
If I take the spell description literally, all those inside gain total concealment. Bosk, is not in the concealment effect area because you have to be completely in it, not partially in it. So he is not concealed from anyone outside, but is concealed from anyone inside, and anyone inside is concealed from him.

As such, you attack a square you think the opponent is in and if the opponent is there, you have a 50% miss chance. Blind-Fight allows a re-roll of that miss chance if the first roll misses. There is no loss of Dex as this only applies to Invisible attackers.

With that, Garret guesses at the last location of Dg7. His attack results are in the spoiler. He does not have Blind-Fight.

Likewise Bosk guesses at the location of his foe from its attack on him. He has Blind-Fight but must still roll the miss chance and any would-be hits that miss get a second chance. There is no Sneak Attack as their Dex is not impaired and Bosk is not Invisible and Total Concealment does not deprive Dex except from Invisible attackers.

BTW, treat rolls 50% or less as miss and 51% or more as hits.
End Note.

Bosk guesses at Dg8's location and attacks with all he's got. As he did not move, he does not need to check his footing. However he does very poorly, maybe because the hot smelly minotaur has gotten a sudden chill?
DM JT: only one attack has a potential to hit vs AC:
Natural Atk Horn gore Hit miss % = 36; Blind-Fight re-roll = 85, hit
DMG = 13 (no sneak damage), presumably not the horn with the poison.

DM JT Note: The concealment does not deny any Dex bonus to AC, thus no Sneak. Concealment does not mean Invisible. The Concealment and Total Concealment say nothing about denying Dex bonus, the prerequisite to Sneak Attacks. Not only that, the rogue 'Must be able to see the target well enough to pick a vital spot... a rogue cannot sneak attack while striking a creature with concealment.
See last paragraph under Rogue - Sneak Attack.

Restlin is also thwarted by the Abominable Sleet Storm. Therefore he casts Improved Invisibility on himself and flies due east, following Tink's strategy.

Beri

...though I didn't intend for it to extend over onto our team, I should have been more clear about that part.

DM JT: yup. I had to center it in the middle of the tentacled area and thus is what is called a learning curve. :)

The cloud that is AKA Beri calls forth some Steam Mephits to appear in a few moments.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

DM JT: now comes the hard part. I hope I can remember the correct order of things. :}

The Black Tentacles keep tentacling (CMB = 30, CMD = 40) and do another 5pts damage to those already caught. With nothing else do to but try to break loose, the grappled foe pray to their god and try to break loose.

DM JT Note: In most cases a N20 is a success regardless of the actual total score necessary to succeed. This allows PCs a chance in an otherwise hopeless situation. What works for PCs also works for NPCs.
CMB to break loose DC40:
Fog of War: Highlight to display spoiler: { Dg1 = 18, Dg2 = 11, Dg3 = 26, Dg4 = 14, Dg6 = 13, DG1 = 19}

Dg5 is still confused (no secret there) and tries to decide what to do next:
Confusion % roll = 86.

Bosk only: Highlight to display spoiler: { Dg5 takes a swing at you with his longsword but misses.
Dg8 smarts from the horn attack and retaliates with his longsword but misses also.
}

Garret only: Highlight to display spoiler: {DG2 had chosen to escape the Black Tentacles in the shortest path he remembered seeing before the sleet storm. His movement, due to Difficult Terrain, put him next to Garret, and hearing the sounds of combat, knows approximately where Garret is but missed last round. DG2 presumes, unless evidence shows otherwise, that Garret is still in the same place. So, for this round DG2 continues to attack the same square.

Att1 = 22, miss, Att2 = 23, miss, Att3 = 28, miss.
}

OK, I think I got it all recovered from memory plus some clean up.

Reminder that to move (other than 5' step) in the sleet takes a DC10 Acrobatics check.

Also, the map now is in true Fog of War. You will need to specify the exact square you want to attack.
You'll have to trust me on the NPCs not directly knowing where the PCs are and I'll try to be as fair as one can be.

Garret laughs quietly when he hears the blade flash past him and he ducks at least one attempted blow. He is starting to realize how little he can see and he idly wonders what the rest of the group is up to. In the meantime, he decides he may not be able to hit the staggered fellow, so he moves to where he was last and reaches out for him, attempting to grab him.

OOC2:
So... Garret is going to attempt a grapple on the stunned guy. He'll move the 5' step to where he was last. If he's not still there, I guess Garret will move a random direction (1d8=1, Acrobatics:28) to try and find him. To all: I forgot to answer the question as to the difference between DG and Dg.
DGs have better armor and equipment appeared to be leader types.
DG1, from your very brief view of him, was the one casting spells, so he must be a spell caster of sorts.
DG2 was a pretty big dude and the one who spoke up and insulted the IA, so maybe he's the leader.

@ Bosk: Keep in mind if your enemies have concealment from you (and usually to claim it you have to give it) you cannot sneak attack with the APG feat which allows you to do so.

DM JT: answering some quick questions first.

When you have multiple attacks by the same method (typical of a high level fighter or monks flurry), you must take the highest bonus first. This may be in the rules somewhere but think of the logic of it. That first attack is your best aimed and readied attack therefore it has the highest bonus. The your experience allows another attack but it is less powerful and not as well prepared as the first attack in the round. Even less so on a third attack.

Mutliple attacks by different methods, ie. two-weapon fighting, off-hand attacks from horns or hoofs (centaurs), shield bashes, etc. can be taken in any order.

So for Bosk, if he does not wish to waste his best shot in a space that may be unoccupied, he can gore first, or armor spike first, etc. Each attack is done in the highest order first. In the case of two off-hand attacks from spikes, the highest bonus goes first.

Thanks Shesha, I realized that after my last turn.
JonT, That was my assumption, but I did not have access to a reference site at work.

DM JT: cool. :)

DM JT: to answer the harder question.

Darkwalk and Shadow Walk, two similar but different things.

One the one hand, Shadow Walk blurs the reality between the planes so you can't make out details of the terrain or areas you pass over during transit nor can you predict perfectly where your travel will end up at.

So, if you use Shadow Walk, you gain nothing and will end up 1d10 x 100 feet away in a random direction.

On the other hand, Darkwalk at 2nd level, you only partly enter the real of shadow. So maybe you can see past the Sleet Storm since the spell does not extend to other planes but you will not see anything that is NOT in the Shadow Realm therefore you will not see where the foes are, since they are not in the shadow realm.
So you have to look back into the Material Plane to see them and thus back into the Sleet Storm, and you are back to where you began, not able to see a thing.

You can still use the concealment benefit of the Darkwalk, but concealments don't stack, so the Total Concealment from the Sleet overrides the partial from the Darkwalk. Still get your Save bonuses though.

DM JT:

One other thing on the Darkwalk. I noticed that at 2nd level, you cannot affect anything on the Material Plane while in the Shadow Plane.

But I guess you are aware of that.

Now, question is, can you Talk to someone from the Shadow to the Material?

If you can't affect anything from the shadow to the material, you can argue that Talking is affecting them in some way and thus not possible either.

Point for a good discussion.

The IA find themselves trying to deal with a self-inflicted situation. Oddly enough, the Sleet Storm is doing no damage per se`, but hampering the beejeebees out of everyone, foes and friendlies alike.

The sleet melts quickly and is absorbed by the porous sand, but as long as the sleet keeps coming down, the sand is slippery. At least the IA figured out how to deal with the heat.

Garret is fortunate that the DM can see through the sleet and can tell him what he finds.
Highlight to display spoiler: { Garret takes a 5' step to where he last felt the Staggered enemy and promptly stumps his toe on a fallen body. A quick check shows a faint pulse but a lot of blood. Since Garret is right on top of him, he can see that the man is unconscious.

DM JT: he was not very theatrical when he went unconscious. On the other hand, a Perception check might have caught the sound of him falling on the sand.
}

Katinka flies closer to Kyan and keeps an eye out for any flanking movements.

DM JT: I put you next to and behind Kyan. If that's not where you want, tell me where and I'll move ya.

Restlin finally gets himself into a position where, if there was a target, he could do something.

Beri gets a Steam Mephit going. Now all they need is a covered pit and they'll have the perfect sauna. The Steam Mephit appears but his target is already peppered with arrows from Kyan.

In Common he yells out "What the blazzes! What are you trying to do to me!" as he finds himself awfully close to a Sleet Storm. A Flaming Sphere appears over his head but it does not console the Mephit!

DM JT: the Mephit is the whirling red cloud, the red color indicating the flaming sphere over him.

Sesha takes the route around the other side of the sleet storm and casts Deathwatch.
She moves 60' closer and is now 90 feet away.

Kyan is out of targets and holds his bow ready to fire.

Bosk tries to find his foes.
Highlight to display spoiler: { Bosk takes a couple swipes at square 24 and does not find a target. He then tries his luck at square 25 but finds empty space there as well.}
