Atlas starts to prepare some fires for the night, but has no time to set them on (also, it is not night yet). Cameron uses the vines to make trip lines around the camp. He asks Crosseye to help him move the Stump with the vipers and they put it covering the north side of the camp. He has more idea to defend the camp, but he has no time to implement them. Carver and Irdalas prepare for any enemy that can approach. Crosseye even climbs a tree in the west part of the camp. You all are working at the preparations when Gaston turns and finds a very angry Zee dropping his stained clothes in the dust. "Hey, idiot girl, those are expensive clothes!" Zee makes a fist and sucker punchs Gaston in the jaw. His head goes sideways, followed by his body, which a second after slumps to the ground, unconscious, into his own urine. Zee, blind with rage, turns without seeing the full effect of her attack, and kiss Atlas. Atlas starts to tell her to cool off, when you start hearing angry humanoid screams, as well as rhythmic taps, beats, and clicks. You are under attack. It is sunset, there is still plenty light. For the sounds you could say there is at least a dozen enemies, all around you. But none of you can see them in the forest. You can roll Perception again. Battle Map

OOC The Wold doesn't use imitative so that we don't wait days for each round of combat. For example, if a person that traditionally posts late at night were top of the order now, we would end up waiting a whole day while they went, then the next person, and so on. From what I have seen, DMs usually go in post order to resolve effects, attacks and other actions. Next, I outlined where I made my hiding spot, near the log. The map shows me clear on the other side of the camp from there. I would put the ditch around 21/15. IC new perception check 27

Why does the forest react to Gaston, so much. Zee continues the thought out loud, "Atlas, why does the forest care so much about Gaston? If he is rude the forest is angry, if he is polite the forest is peaceful. Why does he have a pull on the forest?"
When she hears the angry screams, Zee realizes that there is no time to gain cover. She takes up a position next to Sunowl. She looks about for the first threat.

Before Atlas heads that way he looks over and sees Gaston laying there unconscious. He's a big man in heavy armor, there's no way I can lift him on my own. He's unconscious, so he's not a threat, maybe they won't see him. Atlas shakes his head and lets out an angry, hoarse scream before turning to Zee. "Quick, follow the rest of them, now!"I'm going to die for this pathetic man, why?
Atlas runs over to Gaston to stand guard over his useless body, sword and shield in hand. He yells back at Irdalas, "Keep your aim true Irdalas, I might need some help. We'll expose this man for the fool he is back at the tree if we make it back alive!"

All Changed in the Battle Map. Cameron hides behind the log, in a small trench he prepared. He is almost invisible there. Atlas moves to cover Gaston, he and Zee get back to back, trying to find the enemy. You all hear rustling in the plants around you camp. You see some birds fly away, the screaming cease, but the rhythmic taps, beats, and clicks continue. But you can't see enemies, only branches and bushes moving. Irdalas prepares to fire on anything that comes close, with Mack moving to cover him, both prepared to fight. Carver prepares his lance, tall and big, ready to charge. And then Zee sees them! She lets out a gasp, while pointing at the small green figure! Images: Image one and Image two They seem heavy camouflaged, and are very hard to distinguish from the surrounding vegetation. Cameron follows Zee's finger and sees it, letting a dagger fly out almost instantly! But the figure is too small, and the dagger misses it, even while the figure didn't saw it coming. The rest takes some more time to see them, and only do it when they are really near the camp! Crosseye quickly makes an assessment from the top of the tree. There are at least 18 of the small creatures! Your turn! The enemies are small and are armed with small long spears. Gaston is still out cold, by the way. Irdalas, you can use the previous attack you rolled, or make a new one. You didn't fire before as you haven't seen them. Also: A Hero Point for Atlas, for protecting somebody that can't defend himself, even if the somebody is Gaston ;) Battle Map

Cameron looks at the small green people and realizes he has seen these before. He isn't sure what they are called and he doesn't know how to speak to them. These are angry, the ones he met before were curious. Most likely these won't talk anyway. Hiding time is over, Atlas and Zee for some reason are trying to defend Gaston out there instead of dragging his well toned butt to the log. It would be rough, being small and all, but Cameron is pretty sure he could drag him. The guy can't weigh more than 400 lbs even with the chain shirt he is wearing. (worst case I am figuring 250 lbs and at most 100 lbs of gear)That doesn't solve his problems though. They are going to fight out there, and he doesn't use a bow anymore, so he needs to go out there. Cameron sprints to Gaston's side and grabs hold of the man's tunic, and probably a few chest hairs too. He begins dragging him toward the log. ( at a 4x run Cameron can make it to Gaston this round. For his strength and size, Cameron can drag up to 375 pounds. This is why I urged you all to put this stuff on your sheets ) As he runs he calls out to his companions. " Carver and I saw these people once, in the Cursed Swamp. They have some kind of fungus or something on their hands, at least some of them do. Try to avoid that. We never saw what it did, but apparently it was bad. Now either cover me or help me drag this dead weight back to the log, the defenses will hold them for a few seconds to give us the time to get him there. Carver, trample any that come for me to paste, I know you have been waiting to fight something for days." Cameron was grinning like a madman. This is where he felt most alive. It was true in the Fist and it was still true now. Seemed like the pep talking bard inside him hadn't all been forgotten when he took up the whip.
Actions Quad move to 10/11 and prepare to drag Gaston out of there.( full round action) Shout stuff (free action) Thrill to the feeling of combat again (also a free action)

Zee see the Pygmy warriors and something seems so off. "Atlas, Atlas! Why don't these guys care about what we do? Why does the forest only get mad at Gaston?!"
Zee see Cameron approaching and she wonders if she can slow the attackers down. She feels panic and fear clawing at her, this situation feels much worse than running from the city guard. Zee starts to panic, when she feels it for the first time; deep inside hiding under years of depression, shame, and dirt she feels magic, power and energy in her reach. Zee "feels" and "knows" the right words to say and movements to make. Suddenly, almost before she consciously realized it she has twisted her hands and uttered some words that whisper to her. In the air between Atlas, Gaston, and Zee's little huddle and the nearest attackers hangs the largest glowing symbol that Zee can make. It is fashioned of pure magic and a glowing, gleam symbol. Zee's finger twist and wiggle altering the symbol's configuration. There for the pygmy warriors to see is a golden Old Woldian symbol for Path shifting into the symbol Understand shifting to Nature.

OOC Skill checks don't care about a 1 or a 20. If 1 plus my bonuses beats the set DC, I pass the check, if 20 plus my bonuses doesn't make the set DC then I fail. Otherwise master thieves could be beaten by having enough guards on hand to statistically guarantee a 20 perception roll, no matter how high they roll for stealth. 8 probably isn't enough, but it isn't bad. (also I would use diplomacy, unless you are trying to make them think something other than what you are 'saying'.

If I'm not being attacked at the moment, which it doesn't seem I am yet, I get out the banjo and start trying to match their rhythm..... and/or play something to see if I can calm down the plant smurfs and let them know we're here peacefully. As I'm playing, I also move towards position 19.12, to better protect Irdalas.

OOC: If I understand correctly, my "flurry of blows" will be completely unhampered by the fact that I have a banjo in my hands, since it can also use elbows, feet, knees, etc. I'm picturing a miniature Jackie Chan with one of his many random items he picks up during combat. :) Of course, that's minus any actual fighting ability, since I don't have any yet. ;)

Atlas stands his ground, while shouting instructions. Cameron runs to get next to him, and grabs Gaston, preparing to drag him out of the edge of the camp and to the center, when the pain from the grabbed chest hairs make Gaston regain his senses. He quickly stands, looking around for Zee. "Mad woman! How do you dare to strike..." He looks at Cameron and Atlas eyes and turns to follow their gaze. He sees the small creatures attacking. A high pitched shriek escapes the nobleman's lips, a sound you are starting to get familiar with. Gaston, white as a paper sheet, mumbles, his rage gone. "What are those! Defend me! Help!" Zee uses the fear and thrill of combat to grasp control of her innate magic, painting glowing runes in the air. The small attackers seem undeterred by them. Mack starts to "tap" on his banjo, trying to match the sounds of the Vegepygmies. A couple of them stops and seem intrigued, but the rest charge forth, ignoring him. Carver prepares to charge when the enemies get nearer. Irdalas also stays his hand, waiting for the creatures to attack first. --- Most of the Vegepygmies keep moving forward, showing determination to attack all of you. Suddenly one of them falls! And Another! And Another! In total 9 of them trip on the vines you put surrounding the camp! They stand of after falling. Three of them at the Northeast try to pass next to the log, but stop when the thorns from the bushes you put there start hurting them! Another two try to pass south of the log. The Assassin Vine there makes the plants grab one, but the other is able to avoid the griping vegetation, and is even able to avoid an attack from the Vine itself, reaching the "safety" of the plant-free camp, but it is unable to reach Carver. On the north east side one is able to avoid the trip vines, and stops real near Gaston, showing his long spear to him. On the south side one is able to avoid the vines, and charges against Carver! It's small long spear hits the Large Centaur Scale Armor and snaps cleanly in two! --- Your turn!

We need the map link for this round. Since the map is updated, you can scroll up to the last DM post, that map works fine.
On attacks, yes a 1 is "Devastating Failure" even if it is high enough to hit. It doesn't work that way for skills. Read Hook City for an example of their characters "auto succeeding" at tasks they have many ranks, feats and ability modifiers in.When the DC to see a hidden guy is 15, because that was his stealth roll with modifiers, someone with a +20 modifier in Perception sees him, no matter if they roll a 1 or a 20.
IC Cameron reaches to his belt and pulls his whip free as he steps to his right (move to 12/12, 5 foot step). uncoiling it he snaps it out and tries to disarm the guy threatening Gaston. Since the whip is a new weapon to him, his attempt misses. Draw whip(move action) Attempt disarm attempt vs CMD 11 hit CMD 4 so attempt fails. Attempt does not fail by 10 so I am still armed. This also provokes an AoO. since the guy isn't within reach to attack me the AoO fails.

OOC: Hmm... that's strange. My weapon/damage areas seems to have gotten messed up some how. I had the -1 damage for STR on there, as I was actually doing 0 damage for a while in our prior combats, until someone said I would always do at least 1 damage. ;) I'll get it straightened out here today. Well heck, even if I can get a couple of them to stop for a while, that's more than I can do damage-wise. I keep playing my banjo, to keep as many as I can distracted while the rest of the group takes care of the others. And I continue to make sure none get close enough to Irdalas, though. As I'm playing, I move east just a little (to 20.12).

Atlas swings his sword at the creature next to Gaston and easily swipes through the creatures soft body. For all accounts it should be dead, but it is clearly not human, so Atlas watches just to make sure it falls.
Atlas looks back at Mack and yells "Mack, if I get stuck because I'm laughing at you, you're going to regret it." He smirks as he turns away, but his face turns serious as soon as it sees Gaston. No time address him...

Cameron tries to use his whip to disarm the small vegepygmy threatening Gaston, but misses. Crosseye quickly fires on the vegepygmy creeping between the trees, and pierce its head with an arrow, from side to side. The creature seemingly ignores the arrow, unaffected. Atlas signals Zee the vegepygmy and the girl lets a glowing stone fly towards it. The stone catches it in the middle of the chest, taking it out of combat. Mack keeps playing but he quickly realizes it is not working anymore, as all the small creatures keep advancing. One of them reaches him and he tries to kick it, but only one kick connects, but makes minimum effect on the creature. Mack looks at the creature intently, as if trying to make it burst in flames. The creature looks at its body. Nothing has happened. What is in the halfling mind? Carver starts to stomp the unarmed vegepygmy that attacked him to a pulp while telling them he don't want to fight them. The irony. The two closest attackers get demoralized. Irdalas let's two arrows against the vegepygmy at 20,20, and one of his arrows pierce the middle of it's small body. The vegepygmy seems unaffected and continues his attack, ignoring the arrow poking from its chest. Atlas attacks the vegepygmy nest to Gaston, cutting it in half. Even as it's eyes, or whatever it has for eyes, keeps moving and observing, the rest of it's small body remains still, while a green ichor or sap slowly drains to the ground from it's body halfs. It is out of combat. Gaston looks at the dead creature, and his jaw drops. "What is it? Why it tried to kill me? Help me! Defend me!" At Zee's words he somehow manages to draw his weapon and stumbles to the middle of the camp. "To me! Help me!" ---- The enemies keep pressing their attack, now avoiding the vines more frequently. One of them, in the north, go directly to the stump with the vipers, and suddenly stops there, when the vipers attack him. Others are still stuck in the thorny bushes, advancing very slowly. Another one gets trapped by the Assassin Vine's animated plants, and the vine itself coils around it, squishing it and devouring it rapidly. Then it proceeds to make its animated plants to grab three other of the small attackers, who remain helpless. It seems the vine will eat plenty today. One vegepygmy manages to reach Gaston, but without enough time to attack him. Another one reaches, and attacks, Cameron. The small cleric barely can move again, avoiding the long spear. Two attack the banjo welding Mack, but he uses his ability and a well placed parry with the instrument to avoid being hit. A last one attacks Carver, still shaken at seeing his mate destroyed by the centaur. The long spear thrust seems well aimed to the centaur head, but Carver ducks and escapes harm. Your turn! Cameron backs away from the attacker in front of him to Gaston's side ( move to 15/13). from there his whip flicks out again at the attacker nearest Gaston (the one in 14/15)again his whip fails to disarm the creature. Cameron worries that the others will not fall back too. So long as none of them get isolated, they should be able to cut the little walking shrubs down. Then it strikes him... "The arrows aren't hurting them because they are like a bush! There is nothing vital to hit inside them! Slash them or bash them like Carver, heck, they might even burn."
Disarm vs DC 11, 8 +2 for the Disarm ability of a whip misses. Cameron provokes an AoO from anything near enough to hit him, which is nothing at the moment. Perception 10

I hear Gaston's plea, but I only move towards him if Irdalas does. If so, I move with Irdalas; otherwise, I hold my ground to protect him where he's at, hoping he can shoot flaming arrows, or something. If we do move, I intend to do so slowly so as not to get attacked extra as we fall back.
I attack the vegepygmy most threatening to us (19.11) with a flurry of blows, again trying not to make actual contact with my skin if possible. (Hit AC 15 for 1 damage, and AC 8 for 2 damage).
I wonder if MY attacks harm these creatures, but then, I'm not sure I could really tell since my attacks don't really harm ANY creature much. ;)

Zee can see all of her traveling companions, except Crosseye in the tree and Atlas at her back. Truth be told, she feels safest next to the warrior and styles herself a good luck charm, or helper, or battle partner.
"Atlas! Cameron has gone to aid Gaston... Bloody nightmares, Cameron is there but his attack missed." Zee relays the events that are happening behind Atlas's back. "Do you want me to take on the one nearest us? (11.13) Or help Cameron? (14.15)"
Zee slips another pebble from under her bodice and reaches for the magic. She can feel a great amount of the energy is gone, but for now she can still cast. Soon, she layers the little bullet in strings of golden light; Zee grasps a sun drop missile. Her breath huffs out, and she can feel her knees turning watery. This magic is taking a great deal from her.

Seeing my arrow had no effect and hearing what Cameron said I jump down from the tree( acrobatics check = 9?) and as I move towards the creature draw my great axe (use quick draw and move to 10,13). When I get in range I take a mighty swing with it.(creature 11,13)

But is it is still day, and there is no fire yet. Trey: I would recommend for Atlas to ready his attack against the enemy attacking you. That way you can get right in the action. Sorry couldn't wait for you longer. Cameron falls back towards Gaston and tries to disarm an attacker, unsuccessfully. Carver stopms over another of the small creatures. His hooves tinted green with the ichor that pours from them. The creatures seems unable to understand his pleas to stop the fight, or maybe they are ignoring him. Mack tries to hit one of the creatures, but fails to strike it. He and Irdalas fall back to the center of the camp. Crosseye jumps from the tree, and feels his knee bend off a little in a hurtful way (1 point of nonlethal damage). But he bit his lips and quickly attacks one of the small cretures, but misses it. Zee lets another magic peeble fly towards the creature closests to Atlas. It hits, but the creature keeps standing. Gaston sees many of you around him, and seems to get hold of his senses. He makes a wild swing with his sword against the vegepygmy next to him and he cleanly cuts it in half. He smiles, and stands tall, while saying in a deep commanding voice, full of himself. "Well done people! Keep them at bay! Carver, come over here and protect the south side. You, come and join us!" - he syas towars Crosseye, Atlas and Zee. --- One of the creatures charge from the west side towards Carver, so far the most dangerous enemy they see. The long spear passes a few inches from one of the centaur flanks, without hitting him, parried by his shield. The three vegepygmies in the south try to free themselves form the animated plants controlled by the assasin vine. One manages to and reach the safety of the camp dirt floor, but tired up is unable to advance anymore. Another is unable to escape. The last one manages to move just to be contricted to death by the assasin vine branches. On the north-east side there are five enemies, one of them charges Cameron and the other Mack, making those clickling sounds while they do it. Cameron is able to use his whip to parry the enemy longspear, but Mack's hand suffers a cut while deflecting the attack aimed for his heart (1 point of damage). The other 3 vegepygmies manage to get out of the thorn bushes, and start to make a lot of the clickling noises. They seems like preparing to charge. On the north side a vegepygmy keeps dealing with the vipers in the stump, while other charges against Atlas. Zee's eyes grow while when it sees the vegepygmy long spear hit Atlas dead center over his heart. She turs to see Atlas face, and her brain doesn't register why he is smiling. His armor absorved the hit, and protected him from most of the damage (1 hp damage to Atlas). The enemy next to Crosseye responds to his attack, but the Ranger, even with his sore knee, is able to avoid the attack. --- Your Turn! Battle Map

Carver hates having to kill these creatures, and all because that fool refused to accept that the woods were alive.... He has tears running down his face as he once again tries to stomp on the creature attacking him. Just taking the attacks would do nothing but get him killed. He learned while with the Mailed Fist, protecting himself had to be very high on the list, and he's been asking them to stop.....

Zee looks up and see the critters in the northeast corner escaping the thorn bushes and prepping a charge. "HEY! Watch out, Mack, Irdalas, Cameron! They are coming for you!" Zee wraps the magic around yet another pebbles and launches the missile at the creep leading his companions (19.12).
"I can't do that trick much more, Atlas!" Zee says, and her forehead breaks out in several ----- Actions Zee casts Magic Missile at Vegepygmy on [19.12] for 5 points of damage.

Cameron scoots behind Iraldas and says a prayer to Jancassais. " Lady of Vengeance, we have tried as best we can to not offend the denizens of this wood, but still they attack us. Lend my comrades your blessing so that we may stop them." 8 small sickly green balls of light leap from Camerons hands and land on the top of each of his companion's heads. Making them less fearful and giving them a bit of divine aid to strike their foes.

The others start to look scared to get near the centaur. Atlas try to hit the enemy in front of him, but misses. Zee lets another magic stone fly, now towards the leader of the northeast group, which finds himself with his head ripped open by it, and falls down dead. Mack tries to hit the vegepygmy in front of Cameron, but fails to connect again. Irdalas stands next to him and attacks the other vegepygmy, but it springs out of the way from his sword. Cameron moves back and bless his allies with the power of Jancassais. The vegepygmies seems disconcerted at the meaning of the green balls of light that sprout from the cleric. Crosseye screams and uses his greataxe to hit the small plant creature. As an insect on a windshield, the creature gets splashed by the weapon, hitting it not with the edge, but with the full body, practically disintegrating it. --- The vegepygmy in front of Atlas try to pierce his thigh with it's spear. The lance strikes true, but Irdala's armor deflect the blow, which doesn't hurt him at all. The ones next to Mack attack the halfling monk. He parries one of the spears with his banjo, but half a second later feels the other pierce his side (2 hp damage). The two remaining vegepygmies on the north east try to charge over Mack too, but Irdalas jumps in front of the halfling, covering his flank. The wounds caused by the thorny bushes prevent the vegepygmies to reach the necessary speed, so their attacks lack the power they would have mustered in other circumstances, but they connect anyway, their spears cruelly piercing the elf, who falls to the ground, unconscious, without making any noise, blood splattering on the smiling small creatures. Gaston's eyes grow wide and fearful at the sight of the falling elf, and starts moving backwards, between Cameron and Carver. "They are too many! I think I will go find help, while you resist here!" The vegepygmy in the north finally kills the vipers there, and starts looking for targets to attack. He points his spear at Zee, while making more of the clicking noises. The last enemy on the southeast tries to cross the assassin vine controlled plants area, only to get grabbed by them and being crushed to dead by the vine a second after. The assassin vine will be sated after this battle. The vegepygmy that reached the safety of the dirt camp floor looks at the large centaur in front of him, as well as the macerated bodies of the victims of his hooves below him. He decides, even with it's low intellect, that discretion is the best part of courage. It moves to the west, and then to the north, towards Crosseye. Irdalas is at -1 HP, but wins a Hero Point for helping Mack (if he survives the battle, of course). Your turn!

They are half your size and hit like children, well angry children, with sharp sticks." Cameron says the last part as Iraldas hits the dirt. "Carver, a little help here? I have a man down and can use a little intimidation." Cameron again prays." Lady of Vengeance, please heal my comrade so that he may take his revenge." With a quick step, Cameron grabs Iraldas, releasing the healing prayer on the elf. Again a sickly green light spreads from his hands, closing some, but not all of Iraldas's wounds. He drags the elf into his square, away from the plant men. " Time to get up elf, no time for napping. You have pygmy's to smite."
Step to 16.14 Spontaneously lose Magic Weapon to cast Cure Light Wounds on Iraldas, healing 5 hit points of damage and attempt to drag him to 16.14 so that he has a chance to stand without being hit immediately again.

I try to hold back my huge smile, as Crosseye mentions naming an axe after me some day. But then, the horrible thought goes thru my head of that axe never doing any damage, and Crosseye falling quickly in battle, cursing my name as he goes down... the disappointment in his eyes burning deep into my soul.
At that moment, a little spear pierces my skin again. They hurt more than I would think, but my pain immediately dissipates as I see Irdalas step in to try to protect me and go down filled with little spears. "NNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!" With renewed energy I attack with my little fists, stepping into a position to make sure they can't hit Irdalas more as Cameron works his magic, and pulls him back to a safer position. (Attacking whichever one seems to be the biggest threat to Irdalas at that moment.) (I move into 17.13 if that helps keep them from following Cameron/Irdalas as they move back a little.)

Carver turns and trots towards 17/14,18/14,17/15,18/15, when he arrives there he again tries to stomp on the veggie creature. He also swings away with his sword. The tears are streaming down his face as he's forced to attack to defend his new friends as well as Cameron.....

Acquiring: Hero points are rewards the DM gives to a player when they perform an action that is heroic in nature. Each character begins play with one hero point at first level. Newly created characters entering a game after first level receive one hero point per level, up to three.
Maximum: A character can have a maximum number of hero points equal to their current level
Spending: You may spend hero points to affect certain die rolls. Using a hero point is a free action. Multiple hero points may be spent in one round. Once used, they are gone and are not regained except when new ones are earned. Hero points may be spent by the player in the following ways:
Bonus: A hero point grants you a +2 bonus to any one d20 roll or +10% to any d100 roll -- you can apply the bonus retroactively after the roll is made. You can use a hero point to grant this bonus to another character, as long as you arte in the same location and your character can reasonably affect the outcome of the roll (such as distracting a monster, shouting words of encouragement, or otherwise aiding another with the check). Hero points spent to aid another character grant a lesser bonus: +1 or +5% retroactively after the roll.
Extra Action: You can spend a hero point on your turn to gain an additional standard or move action.
Inspiration: If you feel stuck at one point in the adventure, you can spend a hero point and petition the DM for a hint about what to do next. If the DM feels that there is no information to be gained, the hero point is not spent.
Reroll: You may spend a hero point to reroll any one d20 or d100 roll you just made. You must take the results of the second roll, even if it is worse.

Atlas attacks the enemy next to him, cutting it in half in a diagonal angle. He quickly scans the camp, and decides Zee is safe, and Mack needs all the help he can get defending Irdalas. He moves towards Mack, screaming, trying to get the vegepygmies attention off his friends.

Mack moves to cover Irdalas, while turned into a storm fists and kicks. One hand connects with a vegepygmy, with minimal effect. The vegepygmy north charges against Zee, its spear pointing at her midriff. With the last of her energy Zee sends her last stone towards it, and catches him in a shoulder, making him spin and fall awkwardly at her feet, dead. Irdalas feels consciousness get back to him, and almost as a reflex grab his sword and swings wildly with it, not hitting anything. He stays down, hoping the vegepygmies ignore him. He feels, more than sees, the hooves of Carver next of him. The centaur has arrived. Carver rears, his hooves attacking the nearest enemy, which cleverly moves away to avoid them. The vegepygmy smiles at his maneuver for a second before the centaur sword pierce him from the top of his head to the middle of his body. Crosseye tries to attack the creature in front of him but the vegepygmy, cautiously, keeps its distance, not giving the ranger an opening to attack. Atlas kills another enemy, and moves to help his friends. Gaston sees the south of the camp is clear from enemies.... he turns, ready to run off... but then he turns, grabs his sword with both hands and charges against Crosseye enemy, while emitting a high pitched scream. The vegepygmy's head fly off, high and away, while ichor sprays on Crosseye face. "I got it! I am the best! We will defeat there abominations! Courage, my minions, I am here!" Crosseye, not threatened anymore, move next to Atlas. ---- The three remaining vegepygmies press together, and concentrate on the small halfling, trying to fell another foe. Mack feels like thousands of spears try to kill him, but he manages to use his speed to avoid a couple of them. And then he feels the sharp pain of a spear digging into his flank (5 points damage). --- Your turn! Battle Map

Cameron's whip again snakes out and licks the spear of one of Mack's attackers. And again it fails to find a hold. Shrugging at his lack of effectiveness, Cameron grabs Iraldas by the straps of his armor and drags him back a few feet, so that he can stand without being struck down.
Attempt a disarm against the opponent in 16.12 9 vs DC 11 fails, didn't miss by 5 so not disarmed, once again provoking any opponents around me for AoO, none present so no AoO. Drag Iraldas to 16.14 giving Carver room to move up and allowing Iraldas to stand without provoking AoO.

Carver steps up diagonally to 18/13,19/13,18/14,19/14. Again, he stomps down...., this time he lands a solid thwump (possible crit, not confirmed) on the veggycritter in the middle, and his other hoof comes down on the one on the end...... Having landed both hooves, he is crying so hard that he misses entirely with his sword attack.....Hearing Gaston "You will shut up, or my next hooves might just land on your toes. These forest creatures are only attacking because you have failed your test. When the Chancers learn the extant of your failure, I imagine you will never be inducted to their Club." At this point Carver really does not care anymore what this fool thinks, and if he doesn't earn any pay for this, oh well, he's scrimped before... Heck, he was almost starving when he joined the Mailed Fist... He'd find some way to survive....

Ouch! I really feel the pain of that last spear, now realizing that I've been getting lucky so far. The full potential of those spears is a little more than I originally thought.
I'm glad to see Irdalas's eyes open again and his wounds healing as he gets pulled back. I cover them as I lash out at one of the smurflings, trying to hit the one most injured if I can tell quickly. (Hit AC 17 for 1 damage, and AC 20 for 1 damage). I feel myself getting dizzy as I lose blood, but I feel confident that my friends will finish them off quickly before I am struck again.
I get ready to lay down next to Irdalas for a quick nap.
OOC: I'm not sure how simultaneous our attacks are. I'd probably normally attack 18.12, but Carver may have killed it already. Also, am I impacted at all that I only have 1 hit point (dizzy or such), or am I still basically "full strength" until I hit 0?

Zee can see that the tougher, well trained men have dispatched all but one. To dig into that would be stupid, so she maintains a distance and searches the tree line for more danger. Soon her mind is filled with different emotions. Atlas has been so brave, and Crosseye has tried to keep a cheerful face up in battle, but you can see how much this hurts him to be at odd's with the forest's creatures.
Zee looks over to the flashing hooves and sword of the Centaur. Oh! Poor Carver! He is so sweet and gentle and he is covered in green ichor. Poor Taur, how he must suffer. He is the instrument of Death, and he knows that it could have been avoided. Cameron, Mack, and Irdalas are all there. Little Mack can't last much longer, I hope that Cameron can offer him some help. Oh gods, is Irdalas moving again? I thought he was hurt worse than that.
Gaston! He is spouting off and making noise as always. Zee starts to think of the things that can been done to properly punish Gaston's behavior. As much as I would like to tie him to a tree, it will take something else to end Gaston. I do wish he would at least put his pants back on. He looks so ridiculous. ((OOC: I assume that Gaston is still somewhat drunk and half dressed from his earlier "performance." Zee sucker punched him and then he started leading the battle.))

Atlas moves in behind the mold creatures and attacks with a slicing blow, cutting the first creature down. As has happened to him before, the fear of one of his comrades falling to these creatures overwhelms him and he finds the speed and strength to attack again, but this time it is just not enough as his blade misses its mark.

My heart is breaking with each one dying and all they are doing is defending there home from that disrespectful ignorant man. He keeps shooting off his mouth also. He needs to be brought down a few notches and learn a lot more about nature. He will have to pay. Their (creatures) blood is on his hands. If I have to do it so be it.

As Atlas drops the last opponent, Cameron speaks to his friends. " Crosseye, gather the bodies of those fallen over by you, Atlas, the ones behind you and Carver grab the ones you downed on the south side of camp,Leave their weapons behind. Bring them here next to Mack and the rest of our wounded. Maybe I can save some of them too." Once the bodies and his wounded comrades are gathered together Cameron will channel energy to heal them. As he does so, he says a prayer to Jancassais. " Lady of vengeance, you grant me the power to channel your energy through my body to mend the wounds of the injured. Mend the wounds of my fallen enemies as well. They are disarmed and should not rise up against me, but if I can save even a few, their brethren may not have cause to seek revenge on me or my friends . Lady please grant me this."

Cameron tries to disarm an enemy, without success again, and quickly drags Irdalas back, away from danger. That leaves an space open to Carver to move ahead and stomp down another two of the vegepygmies. Mack holds back the pain and fear and keeps his quick movements against the last vegepygmy, managing to hit it twice. But the important part is that he distracts the small creature so Atlas gets on it's back and cuts it down. Irdalas stands and looks to keep attacking, but none remain. Crosseye and Gaston gets near the others, panting. Zee looks around, trying to detect more enemies, but everything seems clear. Cameron channels energy to heal, trying to revive even some of the wounded enemies, but none of the small creatures survives. Gaston tries to recompose himself. "Excellent work, my fellow adventurers, we are victor..." - he stops talking, a green color in his face. He turns and starts barfing in the ground, sick... You won! Each of you get 200 XP. Each vegepygmy carries 3 Goodberries which heal d4 hp It is starting to get dark now... how do you prepare for the night?

"I hate to burn up spells and items if we don't need to, but we should probably also be prepared for more attacks soon, or even over night. So I'll focus on Long-Term Care for everyone (says I can do 6), while you guys can decide on using up any remaining spells and such." As I look around then, I notice that it's really just Irdalas and I that need the attention. ;)

Carver looks around, crying openly at the destruction the party had caused. It may have been them or us he thought, but it was unnecessary. He looks at Cameron, a hard look comes across his face, like it did that afternoon in the hidden supply room when he attacked the Sargent who was stealing from the Fist. He walks directly over to Gaston. He grabs the man by his lapels, pulls him up face to face. "From now until we return to the Tree, you will not open your mouth, unless you are directly asked a question, you will do as you are told, by anyone of us, as if you were a toddler and not smart enough to live, which you aren't. Because if you fail to follow these instructions, I will leave you here in these living woods to get out on your own. Is that understood? And Yes, I expect an answer from you, so speak." With each sentence he seems to punctuate them with a hoof stomp and a shake of Gaston, to be sure his point is getting through to the man. The anger is clearly written all over Carvers face, the green Veggiepygmy paste is covering Carver from the hooves all the way to his upper legs. "If you follow these instructions, I will say nothing to the Chancers, if you don't follow them, I will tell them just how unfit your are to join them."

Doing as Cameron had ask I move the dead bodies to the pile with a very heavy heart and slump over tried. As he says his prayer I bow my head in respect for the dead. This should not have happened, such useless death we should all live in peace and with one another.
My anger then goes towards Gaston but before I could I act I see the centaur get to him first. I hear what he says to him and give him my approval and then throw him my rope with a nod. "If you need it"
I then look over the camp and get to resetting the traps and doings some cleaning. I head over to the stomp with the vipers and try to calm then again and give the some peace. (wild empathy) Now for Assassin vine. I head to it. "I hope you ate well, my friend, Now it is time to be calm and at peace (wild empathy)
With that being done I think it is time to have a bit to eat myself I the evening is still young. I take out some trail rations to eat.

OoC I was wondering I have the wand of CLW should I not pass it on to one of spell casters now. We have a few now and for me to use it or equip it I have to use an action first (equip switch from weapon to wand) then another to use it. So takes two rounds where a caster might be able to have it in hand already?

Atlas takes a moment to catch his breath. He watches Cameron gather the berries and feels the healing wash over him from his divine blessing. He also watches the drama unfold with Gaston and Carver. He walks over and puts a hand on Carver as he is wrapping up. It is not a hand to say stop, but rather a supporting hand that says he's got your back and feels your pain. When Carver finishes Atlas speaks up, "Carver, you are right to be furious and I agree that either Gaston follows orders from here on out or we address it. However, no matter what happens from here on out, the Chancers are going to know every action of this man. Hiding it will only allow him to cause others pain and I cannot allow that. Also, as much as I would love to leave this man to fend for himself, we must remember the good in ourselves and not allow his ignorance to impact our judgement. If he does not listen, we will tie him up, gag him, and make him walk with us or we'll drag him. Leaving him here to die makes us no better than he. You know this, you're just furious, and rightfully so."
Atlas turns to Gaston, "Gaston, you're an idiot. You'll listen to what Carver said and you'll do as you are told. You are not causing more pain to this forest nor are you putting us further at risk. One mistep and I'll use my socks for the gag." Atlas pauses to ensure he has Gaston's full attention, then he very deliberately says, "Do you fully understand?"
Anyone watching the exchange will note that Atlas is tense and is ready to strike should Gaston decide to mouth off again.
If Gaston mouths off then Atlas strikes him with his fist: 1d20+4=5 (roll of 1...let's hope Gaston is too scared of the two of them to mouth off, especially with the intimidate)

Cameron heads over to Gaston's pack, removing his spade. With a nod to carver, he walks to the western side of the camp and starts digging a communal grave for the pygmies. He knows Carver will eventually came to his sense, and he wants to get ahead of the game. Carver will want to honor his god and set the pygmies off to Gargul's realm as is right. Carver has supported Cameron, so Cameron does the same with Carver now. When asked about the wand, Cameron shakes his head. " You are capable of using it without difficulty. If in the middle of a fight I am out of spells and need it, I'll find it on you while you fight and get it. What's important is that if I fall and can't heal people any more you have it and can."

After a stern look at Gaston, Atlas goes about preparing for the evening. "We don't know that this will be the end of it, or if it is just the beginning. To that end, let's stay sharp again this evening. Zee, you're on first watch with me. Gaston, you are no longer required on watch."
Atlas prepares himself something to eat and spends the rest of the evening catching up with everyone. He then prepares for his shift as the rest of the party tries to get some sleep.

Zee watches all that unfolds, and as the testosterone and anger fades, she walks up to the group. "Gaston has held back information. He has been sent to complete a task, and I believe that he has been given some item or set of instructions. We do not know what that is, and it has caused our distress."
She looks at Carver, "You have a funeral to get to, Man of the gods." Zee offers to take a brush and uses a prestidigitation to help clean the Paladin. She does not care for religion, but she feels the keen loss of these creatures and she looks to the paladin for comfort and solace. When the centaur is clean and presentable she helps bury the vegepygmies.
Zee says a word over the graves of the small things. "To you that the veggie-men served. We have angered you, and we have come into this wood with little respect or understanding. I wish to atone for my sins. Please accept this my favorite cup." She takes out her china cup, "My aunts gave this cup to me, and it is my finest possession..."
Zee fills the cup with dirt and places one of the magic berries in the cup, then she covers the berry and waters the ground. She sets the cup down in the fresh turned graves, "This is my offer, my finest possession, I put back small portion of what was lost, and I offer my blood." Zee pulls her dagger and sprinkles her blood on the cup and grave.
When her cut is clean and bandaged, her dagger cleaned and put away, she turns and gathers the men. "We have never known what Gaston is doing in this wood, and I do not believe that we will ever survive if we don't know the actual, exact, and total truth of what Gaston was to do in this forest. We will not survive the journey out, if we remain unenlightened."

Carver thanks Zee for helping to clean the veggie-mush off his legs and their armor, then he proceeds over to where Cameron had been preparing the remains for burial. He watches as they are set into the grave, when Cameron looks to him for words, Carver speaks..... "Lord Gargul, Lord of Life and Death, please hear the words this unworthy petitioner. While we, may be here in these living woods on a just cause, I believe it was due to one of our members that caused these defenders to attack us. I feel a little out-of-place, not feeling that quite the pomp and circumstance is needed for the little creatures. I do feel like their deaths were unnecessary, but still a little surprised by the majority of the reactions and drama afterwards as well.

Mack examines the enemies bodies, and then himself. After examining them he realizes they are fabled Vegepygmys, and luckily are not infectious, as none of them seem to be a chieftain. He also makes sure the berries are good, which they are, as well and magical and wonderful to the taste. Carver goes to Gaston, and have some very stern words with the nobleman... only after finish telling them he realized the horrid puke and alcohol smell emanating from Gaston, making the centaur fell sick. Gaston mumbles intelligible some words but finally ends only stuttering one. "Ye-Ye-Yes" He also turns and nods to Atlas. He seems really intimidated, and as soon as Carver release him will go quietly to wash somehow and then to get in his expensive sleeping bag to sleep. Crosseye starts cleaning the camp, and check the vipers. They are dead, killed by the vegepygmy that passed there. The Assassin Vine has collected the bodies of its victims near it's root, and is inactive. It will only fight now in self defense. It won't help you anymore. Cameron digs a pit where the bodies are interred. You only wish the forest sense the respect and grief you have for the creatures. Carver directs a petition for Lord Gargul. Mack starts to sing a dirge for them, and even the forest sounds seems to follow the Monk's tune. Then Zee performs a simple offering to the dead creatures, as well as the forest. You get the feeling you have ease the forest, at least for now, granting you some hours of peace. Cameron thinks it is a good idea to abandon Gaston... Atlas and Zee take the first watch, which passes uneventfully. Who takes the second? Mack and Irdalas? Do you take new defensive measures?

OOC We have a watch order on our Woldipedia page, substitute Zee for Gaston. I didn't advocate abandoning him. I said if they wanted to know his secrets, leave him alone and when he panics he will show you who he really is. In fact Cameron said exactly the opposite of your synopsis, that he wasn't going to leave him.
IC Cameron will examine the vipers as well. He reverently removes them from the stump, saving them for later. At Midnight, when Cameron prays, he does so over the mass grave. He mentions to Jancassais that the forest is justified in it's revenge, and hopes it has been sated. He offers the vipers to her as a sacrifice and thanks her for them. They played their part in keeping him safe, and he thanks her for them.

As for Gaston, this man has lost every ounce of respect, but his friends seem to have taken care of this.

He removes his armor and lays it out next to his bedroll along with his shield and sword, then he finally lays down and is snoring by the time his head hits the ground.

Zee is very happy to take the watch with Atlas. This means that she can talk to him about an idea she had during the battle, "Atlas, I bought this long knife, a kukri, in Plateau City, and I want to be taught how to use it."
Zee talks to Atlas during the watch about welding daggers and knives and how to attack and defend. She is a difficult but eager student. A little to stubborn and impatient to pick up any skill, but she seems committed to learning any way.
Zee looks at Atlas, "Cameron is wrong about the way to handle Gaston. He is self-centered and superior. He must be confronted directly and we must threaten what he cares about, Joining the Chancers. When he was drunk he started to tell what he was supposed to do in this wood, but he is either sworn to secrecy or he thinks that we are poor, and that makes us too stupid and simple to be told what he is doing."
Zee takes a breathe, "I know that Crosseye, Irdalas, and Carver have been very compassionate and generous with the forest. Cameron, You, and I have all seen that the forest is alive in many ways, and Mack has wandered in and out of the trees and paths without so much as a scratch. However, when Gaston says something stupid, the forest reacts violently, and when he is positive about the forest the woods are positive." Zee stops and lets that sink in.
"I am curious, and you should be too: What connection does Gaston have with this forest? He is avoiding telling us key information, and we need to insist that he tell us. Ultimately, everyone allows you to lead, so I am advising you. Get the whole story from Gaston, or take us out of the trees before Gaston kills us."

Plus it would not be for long as other would be waking up in the morning. I am use to getting up in the wee hour of morning while I was with grandfather. It was nothing to be up much before the sun, starting in my chors plus I like calm of an early morning seeing the world wake up and come to life. There is nothing quite like it see the brith of a new day.
With those last thought I finish my meal. "I am off to get some sleep! See you all in the morning. But don't be afraid to wake me if needed. ." I announce to everyone
"Cameron please make sure I am up for my watch. It has been a long day." I ask him.
I find a nice spot by the fire, lay out my bedroll, place my axe and bow by me, and drift off to sleep.(still in my armor just in case)

I take my signal whistle off my belt and give it a good, loud blow. I would hope that would get at least most of them going, as we certainly don't have time to go person-to-person to wake them up. I spend round 2 trying to get some fire I can use to keep the wolves at bay, placing myself in the best position between the majority of the threat, and the party members still getting up and ready.
I'm HOPING not to have to fight them, but if they are closing in, they must want a fight. I work on keeping them at bay with the fire, taking up a defensive position.
"Nice puppy..... Nice puppy...... Would you like a berry?" I toss a couple of those delicious berries gently on the ground in front of the first one that approaches, as a peace gesture.
I know "handle animal" says "must be trained", but we've also been asked to make that check before. So here it is:

If the forest is part of their pack, which I would guess it is, they will not stop attacking until we are dead, and the threat to their pack is neutralized. See to your own healing with the berries. Atlas hears the warning and jumps up, quickly becoming fully alert. He grabs his shield and sword, but doesn't have time to put his armor on. He quickly accepts the berries from Cameron, nodding his thanks. He turns his back to the fire and scans the woods for the the wolves, but cannot see them.
Atlas yells to the group as he dashes to their defensive position by the log, "Sounds like they're just out of sight. Everyone get your backs to the log! Mack, Zee, keep an eye behind us. Those wolves can likely jump the log quite easily."
"Irdalas, Crosseye, may your aim be true. They will move in fast, so get as many shots in as you can. We'll keep you protected."
OOC: Do we have any penalties for being tired? I remember at one point I slept in my armor and received a -2 on everything. I'm guessing that only having an hour or two of sleep would likely have the same impact on all of us?

Mack, after alerting the rest of the party, grabs a burning branch and tries to defend his friends. Zee gets her cat next to her, fearing for it's safety, and prepares for the upcoming combat. Cameron quickly checks everyone has healing berries and shares his knowledge (I have to say very "spot on") on wolves. Carver quickly organizes all in a circular fashion, backs to the fire, to avoid anyone getting separated. Atlas moves behind Irdalas, ready to protect the archer. The angry yellow eyes from a wolf appear west, just inside the range of the fire. Irdalas sensitive eyes see it before the others, and let two arrows fly towards it, but both miss. But when they approach you realize the wolf is not alone. It has a vegepygmy riding it. Gaston gets under his bedroll covers... --- The wolf charges against Irdalas, ready to rip him apart, while the vegepygmy riding it prepares to fire a bola against him. And then Crosseye arrow impacts the wolf flank. The wolf cries and drops, causing the small creature to fly away, falling with force against a rock and ripping his head open. Trying to figure out how I ended up on the wrong side of camp in protecting the group, I feel like I must have vastly overheard which direction the wolves were coming from. ;( I run, with my burning branch, towards Irdalas to protect him while he fires his arrows.
If I do feel the wolves are closing in from another direction though, I hold my ground, to try to keep any from getting in behind us. I try to get a better grasp on how many there are, and WHERE they are.

OOC Iraldas, You need to confirm your critical threat. The effect you have on your sheet that crits are automatic is your 20th level skill, not your 1st level skill. If it confirms as critical you roll 3x damage. even without the critical I think it'll die. IC Cameron moved to 21.16 to make his attack. Reading back I didn't mention that.

Easier for me if you give me coordinates, or indications - move next to xxx, towards the nearest enemy, covering the north side, for example). Crosseye tries to calm the wolves, but even as he makes an excellent effort, the fact they are beign lead by the vegepygmy riders, are too far away, he has only a few seconds to do it and they are attacking already make the effort fruitless. He scans the forest, and thinks the wolves are only coming from the east side of the camp. Mack tries to see if wolves are coming from other places, but after failing to hear or see anything, he moves towards Irdalas. Zee stays where she is, and tries to detect magic on the hiding noble. She doesn't detect anything magical on him. Carver stays back, alert, covering the rearguard. Irdalas lets two arrows fly towards the north wolf and it's rider in rapid succession. They both hit the ground dead, pierced by the elf arrows. Cameron moves to Irdalas right and readies his whip to try and trip any wolf that comes near. Gaston keeps completely covered, and unmoving. The rider on the south flank tries to evade the log, but as soon as it clear the log the sound of Cameron's whip reverberates on the forest darkness. The whip grabs the front leg of the wolf, tripping it, and making it fall, it's rider falling prone next to it. Atlas moves next to Cameron, ignoring the Halfling's request, probably after seeing the southern wolf and rider are the only ones alive. He tries to intimidate them, but the growling of the wolf and hate in the vegepygmy makes you think they are not going to stop. OOC: Your turn! Only a wolf and a vegepygmy remains, both prone. Cameron steps to the side ( move to 20.16) and uses his whip to keep the vegepygmy on th e ground, effectively tripping it again to keep it down. Attack hits AC 17 vs whatever their CMD is prone, tripping the pygmy to the ground again if it tries to do anything. Their natural armor is too thick for me to actually damage them. " Carver, what language did William use to talk to the ones we met? Was it undercommon? I forget. I could probably pray closer to morning to be able to understand them, but I couldn't speak back to them.

Atlas attacks the wolf in the ground, making a big gash on its belly. Mack moves to cover Gaston, and a muffled "Auch!" is heard from the sleeping back after the halfling "accidentally" kicks him. The vegepygmy tries to stand, but another whip hit from Cameron drops it down again. The wolf jumps towards Atlas throat, ignoring its open belly and protruding viscera. But before it reaches the fighter an arrow from Crosseye hits it on one eye, pushing it away from Atlas and killing it. The last vegepygmy, prone and unarmed, seems willing to keep fighting. Zee tries to uncover Gaston, but he is holding the edges of his sleeping back too strongly. His muffled voice is heard. "They told me not to participate. I am letting you do what I hired to. Leave me alone!" He ignores Zee's questions until Carver stomping gets near him: "The test was to reach the center of the forest, and sleep there one night. Nothing else, I swear!" Your turn! Atlas drops his sword and shield and reaches out at the moss creature in an attempt to secure it so that one of the others can tie it up. The creature is small and prone and Atlas feels that he can break the creature with his hands alone...if he doesn't end up getting stuck in the gut during the process!
As Atlas attempts the grapple he strains to speak to the others, "Would someone mind tying this thing up if I can get a grip on it?"

I kick Gaston again, and then head over to help secure the veggie-pygmy.
Due to my extreme weight restrictions, I had to decide between either carrying my small silk rope, or wearing underwear..... hey, look at that. I choose the rope! (Too much information?) :)
I try to help the others (Atlas?) secure him, securely yet as comfortably for the creature as possible.

Once we have it secure, I try to offer it a good berry, to show that we really AREN'T trying to harm them unless given no option. I make an attempt at communication as well (I try Elf).

Atlas and Mack seem to have the pygmy pinned and are binding it. Cameron knows he does not speak whatever they do, so he does what he tried when they met these creatures with the Fist. He gets in front of the pygmy and pantomimes calm, settling motions. Then he pantomimes speaking to the pygmy. He hopes to calm it and see if they can communicate some kind of compromise. Atlas lets the moss creature go once it's tied up. He checks Mack's knots and all looks good, so he figures he can move on as Cameron and group try to talk to the thing.
Atlas looks around the camp, hears some of the conversations and gets a stern look on his face. He looks at Carver, he looks at Cameron, he looks back to Carver and he marches over to him. "Alright, what's the deal? You two have stories coming out of your mouths like you've defeated armies, dined with kings, and sang with Caeroldra. Are you part of this test? Are you with the Chancers and just here to see how we act? That meeting on the road is seeming less and less like a coincidence. If it was just one of you then I might think you just liked to boast and exaggerate, but you two are in sync. Either this is rehearsed or it's true. Spit it out or by Gargul you're going to end up wishing you had never taken this job."
In everything from his face, to his stance, to the way he is brandishing his sword and shield, you can easily tell that Atlas is furious about just about everything right now.

Cameron stops trying to calm the vegepygmy and stares at Atlas. He has stood accused of Treason, punishable by death, before Knight Captain Palance and not flinched. He is no more disturbed now than he was then.

"This place is tough, but I have little doubt if I turned and started walking with the intent to leave it in peace that I would find myself at the edge of the wood by nightfall tomorrow. I could pray to the Lady for a prayer that would prove my veracity, but I would be the one casting it so why would you believe me then if you don't believe me now?"
Cameron extinguishes his light and sits on top of the log they have used as a barrier. This interrogation should be enlightening.

Atlas moves to grab the vegepygmy, which unleashes with his claws to scratch the human figther, without success. Mack ties him up, and offers it a goodberry, which the creature rejects while making the clickling noises that seems to be its language. It doesn't respond to common nor elf language. To Cameron the vegepygmy spits, ignoring his calming intentions, even with Zee's help. Zee thinks they should leave, while Irdalas retrieves an arrow and looks around. No other enemies seem about. Carver tells Gaston to stay quiet and still, which he happily do. After confirming no other enemies are around you go back to sleep. The morning arrives, a cold damp day, with the wind making strange eerie noises. You can almost feel the forest is mad, angry, and getting ready to attack. Gaston takes his time composing himself, getting as clean as he is able, without talking to anyone. The vegepygmy seems morose and almost catatonic, not responding to your diplomacy or communication attempts. You finish to prepare spells and other morning chores. Gaston, again an image of a noble adventurer, carrying his packed backpack, talks to you. "I have fulfilled the mission the Chancer's Club asked from me. We have stayed here, the middle of the forest, and survived what the forest has thrown at us. Please pick up your stuff, and let's get back to the Tree of Parting. You have fulfilled, and exceeded, what I requested from you, and I thank you for it." He then turns to look at all of you. While I have heard of the Chancers before, until now I've had nothing to do with them. Unless they were who was behind any of the missions we were assigned while part of The Fist. If that was the case, we knew nothing of it, because except for one mission, we never knew who hired The Fist for those jobs. It's the way they do things. The mission we did know who hired us, was because we were hired by a member of The Fist to prove they were innocent, which they were. I take offense at being accused of being a liar. I do not want to make a fight out of this, but there are just some things you'll need to take on faith, like my Oath.

The next morning, ((OOC: Was last night enough of a disruption that spells are not restored?)) Zee listens to the men, and is deeply sad. The forest tested the party, We failed, we are not a team, I am not a hero; and the forest hates us for it.
Zee throws herself into getting the camp broken down, and making her way to each of her traveling party. She is ruthless and precise about cleaning the area. Soon, she stops to talk to Irdalas and then Crosseye. She touches their arm and asks them how we might aid the forest as we leave? Could there be a planting, or pruning, or help we can offer?
As she buries the fire pit and covers the ashes, she stops and touches Mack's hand. Not the Gaston song. "Mack, I am feeling blue. Could you sing us a sad song? One about a terrible mistake, and regret?" She smiles sweetly at the small man, and praises his abilities with music.
She stoops to talk to Cameron, "I struggle to find much in common with you, but I see that you have helped me a great deal." She touches Cameron in an oddly formal fashion and says, "May you be a sharp and quick instrument in your goddesses hand."
Lastly, she stops and talks to Atlas and Carver; her hands a folded neatly behind her. "I am reserving my touch for you both, later; warriors do not need blessings in peace. Let the pygmy go now, Atlas. He is suffering and he need not. Let him loose, and he can return to the forest." Zee is firm on this point, the pygmy must be released, unharmed back to the forest before the group can leave.

OOC Understood Mack, but the Wold likes to keep characters around. We could have made new characters when we switched, but it was mightily frowned upon. When we moved from the Agents game to here we lost 3 levels. We aged ourselves ( at least I did) so that our whole tour, not the 4 to 6 months we really were there for, had passed. I am not going to remove a year of actual experiences that I had because I am now 1st level. Those are actual experiences I had in the Fist that flesh out my character far more than the back story I have made for Cameron because they actually happened. And they happened in way less than the three years we are attributing to them. I gave a perfectly plausible excuse for it. If Atlas wants to challenge that he can. He can roleplay it, like he is, and it can cause tension that may later resolve into a better understanding. You guys met us under dubious circumstances and things are not turning out well. It makes sense to blame the new guys... only we aren't the only new ones here. And I am certainly not giving Atlas a kiss to get on his good side. If I were 10 years older would it make it more plausible? If I have the hand print of a Vampire in the middle of my chest where he energy drained me would it set your minds at ease? Those aren't the stories I went with to explain it so those aren't the scars I bear.

I being tried from the night events and not much sleep, go about my morning routine. I see Zee start to clean up the camp I go and help. " We should try to leave as we were not here" I tell her in response to her question. I do my best I can as grandfather had taught me, to do just that.
Seeing the conflict between Atlas and the others and wanting to say on everyone's good side I decide to stay out of it. I accept the two from the fist have already had much experience of this world of wold, at least much more them me, and thinking Atlas must just calm down and try to control his emotions more. Maybe it is my innocence, or the fact that something from his past made him act this way, but I see these man for what they say until them prove me wrong. ( taking things at face value over assuming things)
I agree with Zee! The Pygmy must be set free. He is a creature of the forest and is to stay here. With that I head to him point into the forest, nod and then set him free with a little push towards the direction I pointed at the forest. With that I feel much better and at peace with myself. I say a quick pray to the forest quietly that grandfather had taught me. With that done I announce "I am ready to go"

Atlas calms at Carver's words, but he's still bothered and it shows. "Carver, I believe that you speak your truth, but what I cannot fathom is that you've done all these things and yet you two are no different than me or Mack over there. Why is that?
"Let me explain...I have spent time with bandits, forced to as I was captured and forced into service. I carried a sword and I have terrible stories of what they did to people they came across on the road. I can speak to the horrors, I can speak to the fights, I can speak to the things that would have made me a better swordsman or a better marksman, but to be honest, all I ever did was try to look like I was helping. Not once did I kill a man or beast. I was just buying my time until I could escape with my life. Eventually I did.
"So, while I don't talk much about it, since being a bandit is kind of frowned upon, I could easily tell my tale in a way that would make me look like an accomplished swordsman or even an accomplished bandit. I would not do that though, as that is not representing me. Those times taught me how to negotiate for my life, they taught me how to manipulate my captors, but they didn't make me any better in battle, because I was not in battle.
"With all that being said, your stories sound like you've been in battle, and they sound like you've experienced much more in your lives that would allow you to be better aligned to dealing with things like these wolves and moss creatures than me. For the record, I killed my first creature on the trip to the Tree and it was harder than I ever imagined.
"I'm not sure what else to say really. Carver, I believe your comments about the Chancers and the coincidence that brought us together. I'm just not sure I'll ever understand your lives before and how you are who you are now. I guess that is just the way it has to be."
Atlas turns from the Centaur, having calmed down and gained some more respect for him. He takes a step towards his gear, but hesitates and turns towards Cameron. "As for you, I'm tired of your stories. Just give us a break and maybe it won't be so irritating. You're not better than us, no matter how many mighty people you claim to have stared down."
Not caring what else the halfling has to say, Atlas turns toward Crosseye and nods his approval and thanks for letting the thing go.
Hearing Gaston spout on, Atlas just ignores him.

ooc: David, Mac is right. I am putting myself in my character and looking at these two characters and wondering how it is that they are not just dispersing with all these creatures with a wave of their hand and sword. The way they talk they have done a lot, and as you noted, they have. As a character, how does Atlas accept that? It does not sit right with him and it shouldn't. Either these two are telling tall tales, or they are not trying when it comes to battle and other things. Not once has either character explained how they can have so much life experience and yet be so inexperienced in their skills. Atlas sees this and cannot make sense of it, hence the dialog.
As for out of character, I don't get it...at all. Your characters are either: 1. Level 1 with the appropriate skills and life experience. 2. Level x with the appropriate skills and life experience. 3. Level 1 with much more life experience but something happened that caused your characters to forget how to use a sword or a whip or any other skill that should be much higher based on their life experience.
I cannot accept #3 without a valid explanation and that hasn't happened yet from what I know. Atlas will continue to struggle with this. He's only 18 years old. He killed his first goblin on the way to the Tree. He's a natural leader, but he's also young and brash and immature at times. What do you expect out of an 18 year old? Mood swings? Check. Knee jerk reactions? Check. Anger? Check. He's got a ton of potential, but it will take him time to get there. He's definitely not looking for someone to kiss is back side to get on his good side. He's just looking for things to make sense and right now he doesn't know the people or the Wold well enough to make sense of what he sees. To that end, he's doing what an 18 year old will do, he's frustrated at the puzzle and lashing out after a night of fighting, being scared for his life, and frustration over this imbecile that we brought with us named Gaston.

Sense Motive 12 After being accused of being in cahouts with Gaston and defending himself, Cameron sat back and watched the camp until he was relieved. When Gaston announces that they are done, he subtly hints that he is a powerful person that can make the lives of the rest of them difficult if they don't tell the story he wants when they return to the Tree. As he does this, Cameron is surprised the man can be THAT stupid. " Seriously Gaston? You have watched us handily dispatch everything that has come at us. You have learned our histories, most of which you were too arrogant to pay attention to. You even learned that I am a priest of Jancassais, the Lady of Vengeance. All of this and you would threaten us if we don't sing your song when we reach the Tree? Were you hit in the head last night? Repeatedly? What stops us from returning to the Tree without you and Telling the Chancers whatever we want?" "I have protected you this entire time based on the premiss that you were an honest man? Was I wrong?" Cameron places one hand o his whip and the other on his holy symbol, awaiting Gaston's response.

OOC Below is the repost of the explanation Cameron gave for his lack of abilities in the combat department. It was awhile ago and you might just have missed it. Also, from an in character point of view, I would think you were nuts to just trust us anyway when we showed up. In my home group, when a character dies and his replacement shows up we have a saying. " Well, he looks trustworthy! Lets ask him to come along with us." It saves alot of time since we know out of character that this is the new replacement for our fallen comrade and we can spend hours picking apart his resume or just get on with the adventure. You guys did the "trustworthy" thing when we met, and now you are trying to reconcile it with all that has happened. That's great and totally believable. Cameron is doing his thing and trying to reassure you that he is legit, but there is a core inside both him and Carver that won't let them take being called a liar, or have their honor questioned without a fight. So long as we keep it as roleplaying and don't take it personally, it is an awesome type of bonding for new characters to the game. I totally support your skepticism. Hopefully my explanation is enough to put your fears to rest. What is missing from the story, intentionally, is how Morgan's body was desecrated and why it would take a "miracle" by a cult god to fix it. That is a question you could ask and one for which I have an answer ready, should it be brought up. Yes, Cameron totally sounds like he is bragging in some of the tales he recounts. The one with the gnolls and the circus folk really did happen and was played out in emails and posts on the Agents board. Cameron survived by the skin of his teeth. Seeing the odds and knowing when he passed out it is a wonder to him as well as you that he survived too. He tries not to let that slip into his telling of the tale though. If asked he does admit that the lion and the giant saved his bacon, and that he owes the giant, whom he initally considered an enemy, his life. Cameron was a bard though. He has lost the game skills of being a bard, but he still retains the mindset and the spark that allowed him to tell a tale in an epic fashion, so, he does.

As darkness gathers and Cameron's attempts to sleep before his watch start to fade he decides to tell his story to the group. He rejoins them and sticks a stick upright in the ground between them. (cast light) Since Zee is uneasy she seems to be spreading her fears, maybe on purpose, maybe not, to the others. Maybe the story of how he got here from where he started will clear things up a little. He hopes so. These peope seem to be the ones he should be with, at least thats how he reads the signs.
" Carver knows alot of this , but probably not all of it. This is how, and why I follow Jancassais. My parents were adventurers. They ran with a group, led by Morgan Steelshaper, a paladin of Pantheon. They worked in the contested kingdoms, where borders and rulers, and your friends, could change overnight. My mother was a cleric of Flower. She kept the group alive and tried to help the people they always found themselves helping. With so many political changes and a new ruler every few years, the common people got trod upon pretty often. They helped those people regain their lands, or tax money or kidnapped or enslaved loved ones. My father was a rogue, in almost every sense of the word. He stole, he cheated, and he lied, and he made a good deal of coin at it. When he met my mother all of that changed. He didn't do any of those things to better himself anymore, but to get her attention and gain her affection. They made some enemies in those days, but they helped alot of people and gained more friends than enemies. Then they retired. Some like my parents started a family. Some poured themselves into their crafts, making magic and mundane works of art. Every fie years they gathered at the Tears of the Wold Inn and remembered the 'old days'. When I was ten, my parents left for that anniversary and never came back." "Instead of them, Morgan showed up the next day. He was beaten and bloody, and armed to the teeth. He told me my parents were missing and probably dead, and that the people that did it were after both him and me as well. He wasn't there for five minutes, urging me to get dressed and grab my things, when the door was kicked in by a group of thugs. They fought, and he won. I watched from the closet, clutching the few things I had gathered and was terrified. He took a list off of those thugs, like the one on the men that had attacked him at the Inn. We fled and went back to his home in the Scab, where he and his family raised me as their own." " He taught me the rudiments of the forge, but it held no magic for me like it did him. He taught me to fight, but a halfling hasn't the mass and strength to fight in heavy armor like a dwarf. Most of the time I slipped away and read the books he and his father and grandfather for generations had collected on ancient dwarven works of stone, metal and magic. I learned to hide, and I learned to track. I learned the bow and found I could fight pretty well at range. I also learned to hunt and hate the giants that plagued the Scab." " When I grew up I left to join the Mailed Fist, to make something of myself that wasn't given to me by the Steelshaper clan. They had even adopted me and named me a dwarf-kin, making it possible for me to become one of their children and be considered for the family name and home when they died. So I went to the Fist. I earned my way there. I mastered the bow, the woodlands, and learned who I was going to be, or so I thought." " The Fist didn't like people that could make up their own minds. They succeeded by people following orders and rules, Carver understood that, but I couldn't make it work out in my own head. On one mission they told us to go bolster a town that was under siege by gnolls. That was our mission. On the way we met a caravan of traveling performers, a circus, that had been ravaged by a gnoll raiding party. Only their performing lions and hill giant strongman had managed to chase the gnolls off. But night was coming and they would be overrun as soon as we left to follow our mission. We camped with them and in the morning, our sergeants told us to Pack up and head to the town that was our objective. Our Fists packed up and headed out, following orders. "
Cameron pauses and renews the light spell. He is quiet for a moment and then goes on, more quietly.
" That's when I betrayed them and stayed behind to help the caravan. The others followed orders and saved the town, with one of our comrades was killed. I stayed with the performers and got them to town, all except the remaining lion and one performer I couldn't reach in time when the gnolls attacked us. That action, not following that order lost me a promotion to lead our Fist, but it saved over a dozen men, women and children, and one hill giant. It put an end to a rampaging group of almost a score of gnolls and it gave the Fist valuable intelligence about how the gnolls were moving around. It also got Carver and I a more clear perspective on how the gods of the Wold view us and their chosen area of influence." "The comrade that died, was a good friend to a witch in our Fist. He convinced the rest of us that we had to try and bring the comrade back to life. He petitioned Gargul and a few minutes later, we found ourselves in the Land of Rest. We walked around and finally found ourselves standing in front of Gargul's throne. Gargul was mostly compassionate about the one that had died, who was a cleric of Flower. She was there too, Flower herself. I remember how she made us all feel. She wiped away any guilt or horror that any of us had when we thought of how our comrade had died. She even assured me that I had done the right thing in betraying my friends and saving the performers. Gargul allowed him to return, then became angry and cast us out when he didn't show Gargul or even Flower any respect. So I know the gods are real, and that they take their chosen areas of influence very seriously." "Anyway, we were sent on another mission, to find where the gnolls came from. It led us to the Cursed Swamp. Carver and the other Cetaur in our group became ill from standing in the water so much, because centaurs can't climb. After we rescued some slaves from a group of gnolls, Carver got really sick. So I took him and the slaves back to the Citadel while the others finished the mission. They healed Carver, and I learned I had another trip to make." " Morgan had started investigating the people that killed his friends and had been murdered. My grandfather sent word to the Fist, and I assume a sizable donation, saying I needed to return home since I was his son so that I could bury him. I returned home and Carver came with me, saying he was supposed to. I spent days in the temple preparing Morgan to be sent back to the stone. All the while I was there I kept hearing nagging whispers. They said things like 'He was a paladin of Pantheon, following the rule of justice, looking for the killers to bring them in, look where it got him'. I always looked for the source, but never found it. Until one night I was finishing the rites and prayers the dwarves use to make a desecrated corpse ready for the ground when the speaker appeared. We spoke, and he told me that he could see in my devotion to a dwarf that was not even my real blood and desire to make this right. I told him I was making it right, returning Morgan to the way he had been before dying, before they desecrated his body, so he could be returned to the stone and be with his ancestors. " "To make a very long conversation short, he said what I really wanted was to find the ones who did this, the ones who killed my parents and all their friends and tried to kill me and put it behind me, making sure they never tried to come after me again. He said when I admitted that and wanted his help he would be there. I went home, slept on it and realized I did want it to end. But I had no clues, and no idea where to start. When I went to the temple that day, I again found him there. He explained all about Jancassais and how, with her help I could finish what Morgan started. It would require devotion and sacrifice, but it could be done, even against foes as powerful as they were, by someone as powerless as I. He told me to think it over and when I was sure, I could drink from the vial he gave me and Morgan would be ready to continue on his journey, and I would be ready to start mine." "Two more days of rituals, and I thought about the offer. In a case like Morgan's a night of prayer and vigil was required before the ceremony to lay him to rest. That night, as I watched over his body I made my decision, and I drank the vial. It was poison. It knocked me out, stole all of the skills and powers I had, and turned me into a blank slate with only my memories remaining intact. Later, I found that the experiences, the skills and powers I had lost, had revitalized the ravaged and desecrated corpse of Morgan. He was returned to the stone, and I was reborn to take up Jancassais whip, and her devotion. I would learn, through trial and devotion what I needed to know to find the people responsible. When I did, the revenge I chose was my own affair." "So here we are. I follow her ideals of hunting, since that is what I am doing, hunting the ones responsible for Morgan and my parents and all their friends deaths. I also follow her ideals of poison, which came in handy today to help Gaston not stab himself. I chose poison because I am small and weak. Poison levels the playing field with larger, stronger opponents. It is also how I came to follow Jancassais. I make my devotions and I help any others I find if they need help. Nightly I either review the few clues I have, praying for insight and a better understanding so that I can learn more, or I sacrifice a part of myself through eating poisoned creatures so that I can learn the stillness and clarity I must have to see the path I must walk. She grants me prayers to help me on my way and sometimes shows me signs that I am on the right path. We have seen two toxic creatures today and emerged none the worse for wear from them. To me these are her trials and signs that guide me." Unless there are questions, Cameron gets up and returns to his bedroll in the crook of a tree. He sleeps in his armor, until midnight. At midnight he rises, makes his devotions to Jancassais and takes his turn on watch

Yes, their characters have "issues" because they were "reduced" to be here (they had to take them back to level 1). They did that to help us in the game, and we should be very grateful to them for that. So please let it be, and lets all enjoy the ride together. And if you want to pick on somebody, Gaston is there! Mack is making some progress on his song (but is not very funny, maybe because you are too closer of the subject of the song, as comedy is tragedy plus time, and the time has been short here) while the others prepare for depart. but at Zee requests he changes the tune, one for sorrow, and the sound seems to weight heavy in the forest heart, as the uneasiness that permeated you seem to lift somewhat. Carver and Atlas, stressed by all the combat and the whole situation let the environment have the best of them and start bickering between themselves. Zee and Crosseye take care in cleaning the camp, restoring the forest to its original state as closely as possible, and Zee even asks the others to release the captured vegepygmy. Crosseye takes the matter in his own hands, taking the small creature to the edge of the camp and releasing it. It runs away, without looking back. Irdalas watches all around to prevent enemies from closing in. Cameron answers Gaston veiled threats, and the nobleman doesn't seem taken aback. "Please don't take it like that! I am not asking for you to lie for me! You all saw me dispatch two of the enemy, with clear ability. I only want for you to tell the truth, objectively, without prejudices. Your reward will be there, whatever you say, for the service you are doing to me."

When the group finally, starts out she encourages Mack to keep up his tune, "Mackie, it makes me glad to feel so sad." As always the trail shuffles into a marching order. Zee makes sure that she marches beside Atlas. She takes his arm, no shift of power, no clawing affection, she holds him like a brother, "We look up to you, Atlas, they asked you to lead. Please, let us in... You have trust us, to have us trust you. We failed in the forest, but we can start over on the way out. Be our friend, Atlas, be my friend, please?"

Atlas hears the reminder from Cameron about how he lost his skill and doesn't respond at first, but after a little time goes by he takes a moment to speak with him, "Cameron, I'm sorry I came across as accusing as I did. I never heard that part of your story. I don't know what I was doing at the time, but this is the first I have heard it. I imagine knowing that you knew something and cannot do it now must be difficult to live with. That is a sacrafice that I can respect. Please accept my apologies. I am tired and just trying to find my way in the Wold, and all the uncertainty with Gaston and running into new people every other day has me on edge."
Atlas makes a similar apology to Carver, then he addresses Gaston, "Gaston, we'll tell the facts and if asked will give our opinion on matters. I'm done with the games, lets get moving."
With that Atlas looks around to the group. "Everyone ready to get moving? I don't know if we've made it to the center of if we're going to get out safe or anything right now. I just know that the person paying us is ready to go and we don't have any other reason to stay here. I vote that we move out and do so as quickly as possible. Anyone that thinks differently please speak up."
--------------------------------------------------------- OOC: I guess I can take it down a notch. I can only assume that my posts are coming across differently than I mean them to. IMO, you cannot throw a bunch of people together, especially with different backgrounds and different ages, and not expect there to be some conflict when they are tired, being played with by their employer, and fighting for their lives. I was just trying to role play it in a way that I thought would be realistic for Atlas.
As for the missed background component, yep, I own missing that. I even went back and looked at that post once before my original post and I missed the part about the lost skills. Having done that, I don't want to re-write history, so above I have Atlas admitting that he missed it as well.
For the record, I personally have not had any hard feelings with the players here. If it comes across that way then let me know. I'm just trying to have fun and build my character and the bonds with the other characters. Conflict among the group can lead to stronger bonds later on. I would have actually liked to play this conflict out a bit further so that we can build that bond. Instead at your request I have stopped it in a way that I feel uncomfortable doing so because it will only build more conflict between these characters going forward. The only way to avoid that is for me to treat Atlas in a way that I don't believe is in his nature. I don't like doing that, it's not true to who he is, but for the greater good of the game I guess I will.

(non bio-degradable) Anything that will not be absorbed by the forest, he'll pick up, no need to further irritate the woods, they may be leaving, but there is no need to push it. "I don't see anything left that should bother, so lets get a move on, maybe we'll be luck and not come out on the far side of the woods from the Tree." With things calming down in the group I note to myself I will talk with Atlas later back at the tree about the events.
Now with the group ready to go I look for the trail. (Survival check 14 to find the trail) "This way everyone" I am quickly able to find it and start to follow back the way we came. This hopefully will just take the day day to exit back to the edge of the forest as long as we don't run into anything unexpected. (Perception check 9 here come my good rolls again. I think need to go back to training :) I also am doing another survival check to follow trail now 18)

Atlas I know your feelings and we can carry on the conversation back at tree in private. Right now I am leading the group out I hope. I seen where u came from and we all know there are going to be arguements and differents of characters. I think play him the way you want. it is not evil or bad but just Atlas. It is what makes him, him. As for Crosseye I am playing the shy innocent young man that was sheltered away from the world by his grandfather. But Atlas has a different view, experances, and up bring. It might and most likely will get me in trouble or at least at first taken advantaged of but he will have to learn and experance it.

You begin to move, but Gaston screams a high pitched whine again. You turn and he has his hand on his arm, holding it. "Damn it! Damn wasp! It sting me! I hate this damn forest!" You realize there are a couple wasps flying around Gaston, as well as another half a dozen zooming near you. They don't seem particularly aggressive. But then you start hearing some buzzing. It starts gaining volume. It comes from the south. The buzzing keeps getting louder. And louder. Gaston stops complaining, quickly drops his pack, unfurls his bedroll and gets inside it, head first, without a word. Whatever is making the sound seems to be really near. Eric R: No fire, not even a fire pit. The characters tried to leave the place pristine. Earl: Moved Crosseye to 12.14 as not to be behind Carver (which would hurt your firing) but behind the cowering Gaston. At Cameron's prodding Gaston gets out of his sleeping bag, and grabs his sword... he doesn't seem very brave or motivated. "I don't need a shot at redemption. I have won my place in the Chancer's club already! You saw I can handle my own in a fight!" Cameron's piercing eyes discern the enemies in between the tress, flying quickly. 4 giant wasps, buzzing and flying quickly between the trees, with one vegepygmy rider each. he points them out to his friends. At knowing what you are against, Gaston quickly drop his sword and jumps back into his sleeping bag. "Get them! I need to cover, as I am allergic to wasps!" Seeing that Gaston will let this opportunity for heroics pass, Cameron moves forward, next to Atlas. Mack moves to cover Irdalas, whole trying to see the enemies, unsuccessfully. Atlas bravely moves forward, trying to buy time for his allies. he realizes this vegepygmies look much bigger, stronger and meaner that the others. Zee moves behind him, touching his shoulder, and letting her magic help him. (If I had a character in this adventure he would start feeling jealous of Atlas) :P Carver gets his lance out. The morning sun illuminates the large Centaur, mighty in the dawn light. Crosseye moves behind Gaston and Carver, bow and arrow ready. Irdalas follows, keeping in line with his ally. The wasps move with amazing speed and dexterity between the tress, and finally stop buzzing behind some tress at the south side of the camp clear. From behind the trees the wasp charge, without riders now, towards you! You all duck to let them pass over you, which they do without attacking. They fly away towards the north, without intention to return and fight (it seems). The vegepygmies use that time to get positions, covered (full cover), behind some tress. Your turn!

However they are no better than he is if they go back on their word and don't protect him. So Cameron holds the middle ground. "I won't attack them unless they come after us, just so you know." Atlas waits. He is anxious, that feeling before a battle is always so annoying. I hate waiting! A few times he goes to take a step forward, but he reminds himself that to get too far from the group is just going ruin their defenses and possibly cause others to get hurt. Bah, the waiting and watching is the strategy, and a darn good one, even if it is annoying and gives me a sick feeling in my stomach.

A tense standoff takes place, only broken by Mack masterwork banjo playing. On of the Vegepygmy, dressed with small bones and colorful flowers, move towards you, stand some distance away, and starts gesticulating and making the strange clicking noises. Atlas feels the spell and its effects on him, and he certainly regrets the pain he has caused the forest through this ridiculous adventure. However, he's not going to offer his life to fix it. "If they try that one more time then I'm attacking. I'm not going to sit here and let them guilt me to death."
He then steps forward to try one last attempt at parley. He uses the common language, gestures of peace and apology, and does his best to convey their regret for their actions without coming across as weak or groveling.

I feel a sadness for the situation but am able to hold it together. I just want to get out of this Forrest and leave things as they where. "Do you think they are trying communicate or just getting ready to attack? Can we leave this place peacefully?". I continue to hold my ground with bow down but ready, watching who makes the next move.
OoC Is ok Mack I can Melee just as good but with both Atlas and Carver now as shields I will try to stay distance for mobility plus I have the wand and if engaged will be hard to use.

Cameron fears combat is unavoidable, and ask for Jancassais blessing in the upcoming conflict. Atlas doesn't share his opinion and moves a little towards the enemy, trying to make a diplomatic approach. Mack's music keeps setting the mood, now with the oppressive sadness of a conflict you didn't wanted, but have been thrown upon you by Gaston's actions. Carver stands still, feeling the sadness wash over him... but the Cameron blessing helps him regain his will to fight! He waits for the small creatures to attack first. Zee also gets demotivated by vegepygmy and screams at the forest. She also gets bolstered by Cameron. She moves forward too, getting in between Atlas and Carver, on the first line of defense. Crosseye prepares to attack, silently hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst, not letting the enemy magic affect him. Cameron finally tells you he thinks they will charge in six seconds. You all mentally count to six in your heads. --- When you reach zero, the two big vegepygmies, as if on cue, scream and charge, one against Carver, the other against Zee. Both of them fail miserably. OOC: Cameron, you can try your attack of opportunity to disarm. The other two enemies start to gesticulate and make clickling noises. Cameron, Zee and Atlas hear the ground under their feet start to make rumbling sounds, as if the ground is going to open up any second! But the rest get more worried because of the buzzing noise coming from the south tress, where the other vegepygmy is covering, as if a huge swarm of hornets have appeared from nowhere! Zee is shocked and alarmed by the charging pygmy, but she has never been in close combat and does not realize her danger, still. Zee touches Atlas, the gleam of gold and silver light rises out of her skin and mists on to the fighter's body. As the light settles in Zee can feel the freedom from fear that Cameron extended her, and she can feel the well of magic in her soul full and ready.
Zee pulls her long curved knife from her belt. She is looking at the large shurby in front of her, but her mind is turning to the two in the back. They are bound to cause more trouble.

Trying to resist the temptation to leave my "wing-man" position and sneak out into the deeper woods to sneak up on the one remaining out there, I move just slightly closer (to 12.17). As the pygmies close Cameron's whip delicately snaps past Zee's hip and under Atlas's shield attempting to disarm the one charging them. AoO hit CMD 9( I forgot the Bless) vs their CMD of 11 ( remember the -2 for charging) connects. It wraps around the creature's weapon and yanks it away, dropping it at the critter's feet. It provokes an AoO from anything near Cameron. No one is near, all is well.
Cameron knows the rumbling can not be good, so he moves to another spot. He assumes that Atlas and Zee will break away from Carver, so that is the way he goes. He moves to 13.22. Again his whip snaps out, this time at the caster, trying to trip it. He hopes that the creature's spell can be disrupted. Attack hits CMD 20( forgot it again when I rolled) vs a CMD of 11... Success. His whip strikes through wrapping around the chief's legs and dropping him to the turf. Again it provokes an AoO from anything near Cameron. No one is near, all is well.
Cameron looks toward where the buzzing is starting and fears the worst. The Lady of Vengence has a prayer that creates a swarm of hornets to assail her cleric's foes. He hopes this is not that Perception 19
Cameron smiles having finally felt like he was pulling his weight in a fight. He knows none of the attacks he has can hurt these foes, but disrupting them should be enough to give his friends an edge.

OOC I'm on FIRE! Don't forget the Bless, or the lack of Bane for those that failed their save to the Chief's spell. I did and thankfully remembered it before finishing. It is the difference between a disarm and no disarm. Also remember that arrows don't hurt them much (they have some DR vs piercing damage), shooting the wasps is probably far more effective.

With the battle starting and the time to fight has started I reach down and grab Gaston. "This is because of you! You are not going to sit out this. You are coming with me!" with that I drag push Gaston with me and start to move closer to the combat. (Move to 13,16 not sure of penilty because of Gaston so only moving 15' if less then that is the direction I am heading. I know arrows didn't work last time and so am working on getting into Melee range with Gaston!)

Carver attacks the enemy that charged against him, and hurts it badly. Irdalas stands his ground, worried about the buzzing sound. "Nooo! Leave me alone!" Gaston tries to avoid getting into combat, but between Mack and Crosseye force him to face one of the vegepygmies. Zee helps Atlas with a touch, but Atlas misses his attack anyway! Cameron tries to disarm it, and thinks he has got it, but the small enemy manages to hold on his weapon. This are no normal vegepygmies, that is for sure. --- The enemy in front of Carver keeps attacking, Carver's shield tries to get in the way of the attack but misses, and the centaur's torso is pierced by the small weapon (6 HP Damage). The other attacks Zee, ignoring the cowering Gaston, but misses too, the small girl's body a too narrow target for him. One of the "caster" enemies takes a 5' step towards Cameron and attacks him! But his attack misses. The other one, hearing his friend clicking, comes out from behind the tree and attacks Cameron too. But the Cleric manages to avoid the attack too. The sounds keep raising in volume... you can almost imagine the ground opening under you, and a big swarm of wasps attacking. Attacking Gaston? That would be okay. Attacking Atlas, Carver, Crosseye, or Irdalas makes sense too- they can defend themselves. The warrior hacking and slashing at me, makes sense I encouraged the attack, but attacking Cameron?! Even with his surely, dour little dwarf accent and the creepy, poison obsession, the little guy doesn't deserve that treatment. Before she can think through the implications, Zee reaches for the magic and casts a spell.
The golden and sliver light spills out of her hand and pours along her blade. The words and gestures come to her unbidden, and slip out of her mouth. Finally, with a flick of the wrist Zee launches a blade shaped missile against the Vegepygmy attacking Cameron.((OOC: I fire against one of the casters.))"Don't touch him! He did hurt you!"

Atlas sees Cameron out by himself and Mack going to help him, but Gaston isn't going to help Zee, so he makes the decision to stay and deal with this one first. Two halflings should be able to deal with that thing long enough.
Atlas steps a little closer to Cameron and in doing so draws his blade across the mid section of the moss creature, practically splitting it in half.
"I don't like the sound of this, lets dispatch of these things and get out of here!"

I beg to differ, (see below, copied from the SRD) but I was so close to missing that if that guy was at all tougher than the little ones I would have missed him. "A creature can also add any circumstance, deflection, dodge, insight, luck, morale, profane, and sacred bonuses to AC to its CMD. Any penalties to a creature's AC also apply to its CMD. A flat-footed creature does not add its Dexterity bonus to its CMD."
Finally, whats the guy 5 squares away attacking with?

Even with Jancassais help and the trippiness of the whip Cameron is unable to trip the pygmy this time.
My attack beats CMD 10 which is not high enough to trip them. I have no idea if I have to drop the whip or not because I have no indication what their CMD is. This provokes an AoO from anything near Cameron. No one is near, all is well.

OOC Questions I have... What weapons are these guys using?This should be pretty obvious and is necessary so I can manage AoOs since I provoke them from alot of squares with a whip.
What's their CMD? I know it's higher than 11, is it higher than the 20 I rolled? If it is I know enough to stop trying and do something else.
How come Mack and I don't hear/feel the wasps anymore? We made perception checks but were only told we don't feel them anymore but those not trying do. Why? Illusion save? put it in spoilers since it seems to be specific to the two of us.

OOC: So, there seems to be ground shaking and wasps that aren't real, but I'm not sure if Mack knows what the others are seeing, or if I'm just not seeing them and they are. If the latter, I'm not sure I would know what to tell the others, as I don't necessarily know that they're seeing/hearing wasps. Confusing... but then, it's probably supposed to be. ;)

I missed that! I will change the trip for now! All the vegepygmies use wooden spears. CMD are 14 or 11, depending on which one. You still hear the sound, but you don't fell the rumbling in the ground or see the wasps. You can try a Will save to disbelieve, if you want. Eric: Yes, confusing you was the idea, and it worked, if you ask me :D Cameron uses his whip to trip the enemy in front of Zee! Zee casts an spell against the enemies facing Cameron. But then she starts casting the enemy in front of her, even while on the ground, takes advantage of her concentration to try and hit her. She gets hurt in the thigh, and a scream comes to her lips. But she manages to keep her concentration, and don't let the sounds escape, so her spell works! The magic force impacts the vegepygmy, which screams in pain. Mack thinks the rumbling and the wasps are just illusions (you can make a Will save to disbelieve), and moves to get in line. Atlas defends Zee, trying to bring down the enemy that attacked her. He smiles at the good swing he gets to the prone enemy, thinking the enemy will drop, based on his experience with this creatures. But the gash, big as it is, seems to be ignored by the enemy, who keeps attacking! He is more confused about the sounds, too! he thinks the rumbling noise comes from behind the ground, under his feet, while the wasp noise comes from behind the tress on the south side. Cameron takes a step back, avoiding the small attacker spear, and tries to trip it, without success. Carver also tries to defend Zee, but all his attacks, incredibly, miss their mark! These guys are tough! Irdalas fires against the enemy on the back, but misses. Crosseye keeps prodding Gaston to make him fight. Gaston, partly because of Crosseye intimidation, and partly because he sees blood on Zee's clothes, screams with fury and throws himself on the small enemy! "Leave her alone!" He tries to hug and grab the small creature, but it moves quickly and avoids the attack. --- The vegepygmy facing Carver keeps attacking. It manages to poke the centaur in his kidney, causing a big pain in the centaur body, shaking him. (4 hp damage critical hit). The one facing Zee attacks Gaston now, making a small gash on his cheek. Gaston screams, throw his sword down, and drop to the ground, holding his face in his hands. "Argg! I am hurt!" Even the vegepygmy seem surprised for the theatrics of the man. Carver feels the creature touch him and a wave of something try to take effect, but with his constitution, probably from being a Centaur, he shrugs it aside and continues his attacks. Again, he attacks the one in front of Zee, this time with Atlas flanking it, he strikes it again with his lance. (11,21) He also stomps the creature at his feet. (09,22)
There's not much to say, so he keeps silent, no need wasting energy when everyone is already doing something....

I move south of the one attacking Cameron..... trying to get him to have to fight us from both side. (move to 14.23). I attempt to hit that one with a flurry of blows (attacking 13.22).

Living up to my reputation for not doing any damage, I pretty much succeed again, even with a possible Crit. ;)
I try to convey my confusion to the others, in hopes that it might help. "Some of us seem to be seeing things that others are not.... I don't know if it's illusion or invisibility."
OOC: Even though I'm not doing much damage (if any), I'm hoping that me flanking him will help the others. (+2 bonus for Atlas, I believe?)
I'm also wondering about "Aid Another Attack". It says to make an Attack roll against DC 10, to give allies attacking the same creature a +2. Since multiple people can do that for multiple cumulative bonuses, I would assume if 1 person gets 2 attacks, I could potentially give someone a +4 bonus? Am I reading that correctly?

OOC No you are not reading it correctly. Aid another in combat ( or any time actually) is a Standard Action and you only get one standard action per round. IC " I am a little stuck over here Carver, either heal yourself with a potion, a goodberry or see if Crosseye can tap you with the wand ." Cameron steps back again to 13.20 and disarms the one that was standing in front of him a second ago (13.22) Attack succeeds against CMD 12, even if their CMD is 14 I don't fail by enough to drop my whip. This attacks AoO from anyone near Cameron, he backed up so all good.
