Zero and Emrys come in from the great outdoors, and a great time is enjoyed by all at the Vanguard headquarters, thanks to Grell's cooking prowess.
The party continues to chat about their pasts and the things they might do in the future. [OOC: Please feel very free to take that great conversation, started by Zero above, to email. In fact, that would be a GREAT thing to compile and place on a wiki page, that we can link to from the game page. Meanwhile, I hope you will not mind you DM moving the game along ...]

After some much needed R&R, Grell recalls that he wanted to visit the dire tigers at the gladiator school. Everyone comes along.
In the Gold Quarter, just over from the great city arena, are two schools training gladiators. The sport is well loved in the city -- and in contrast to the cruel spectacle of Ancient Rome in the real world, here in the Wold, ready access to healing magic ensures that deaths are extremely rare in the ring, Walking over from the Vanguard's home Nightmare Quarter, The older members of the Vanguard bring the newer ones up to date.
The monstrologer, Draco, had been terrorizing the city by releasing monsters throughout. He sent two intelligent talking dire tigers to "show the humans who is the real king of the city." However, the tigers quickly struck a deal to show off their martial prowess -- without killing anyone. And the Vanguard then got the tigers a place in a gladiator school, since that seems to satisfy their own desires and those of gamblers and sports aficionados who love a good fight. Grell is the official sponsor of the two tigers, and he stands to earn 40% of their purses over the next year. Will he earn back his 1,600 gp investment? We'll see.
The House of Blood gladiator school sits behind a tall wall. However, the gates are wide open when you arrive, and you see the gladiator master -- Quint -- shouting encouragement in the huge yard to a would-be fighter facing off the smaller, female dire tiger, Gavisus. She is careful to only attack with her paws, each of which is magicked to only deliver nonlethal damage. It does not look like much of a challenge for her.
Quint sees you enter and grins widely. He is a huge old scarred man with massive hands. He whistles a halt to the bout -- the human sighs in relief -- and holds out a hand to you -- well, to Grell especially. "Welcome, Vanguarders," he shouts.
Meanwhile, Gavisus dashes off to the back of the yard, where a big shed has been erected. "Felix my mate! Come here! Our sponsor has arrived!" she calls out.

As Ariach sees Gavisus a big grin appears at Ariachīs face. Seeing at least one of the two tigers let him always think about Grellīs big heart. The brutal seeming warrior Grell has helped out the tigers without hesitation. Thatīs why Ariach knows he or any other Vanguard can count on Grellīs support at any time. And that is the reason why the Vanguardīs will raise to a formidable adventure group.

Yeshua and Truman are intrigued to see two of his siblings race there. They both offer a greeting in tiger language and introduce themselves. They feel an affinity to these gladiators and meeting fellow tigers does make getting used to a new environment much easier. They are also curious to learn more about this arrangement with the school.
He also has an empathic link with other tigers and uses it to commo with them...
OOC - it is a lost child ability- At 4th level, the Lost Child gains an Empathic Link (see below) with all members of his adopted species within one mile. Moreover, the Lost Child can Speak With Animals, as the spell, at will, but only with creatures of his adopted species. The Lost Child also gains a bonus equal to his Lost Child levels -3 when making any Wisdom and Charisma-based check (such as Wild Empathy, Spot, or Bluff) with his adopted species. The DM may also allow Wild Heart to work with other related species.

Lowell comes with the group to see the two great cats, but he's not too happy about it. He's glad that Grell enjoys seeing these cats so much, but Lowell himself has never liked cats too much. Especially kittens.... those things are just so creepy! With their little faces that seem so cute, but then, BAM! They can attack out of no where. And Lowell has had to fight Felix and Gavisus before..... But as long as Grell thinks they are good, Lowell will trust him. Still, Lowell decides to stay at the back of the group when they arrive at the school. "Great," Lowell mutters to himself with as much sarcasm as he can muster, "we're here."

Grell's grin extends from ear to ear as he heads over to the school to check on Felix and Gavisus. Grell grabs Quint's hand in a crushing grip. "Master Quint! I see that Mistress Gavisus' training is going well! I hope she hasn't clobbered too many of your gladiators!" Grell winks to let the trainer know that he is only joking.
As Gavisus runs off to find Felix, Grell pulls Quint in close and whispers. "So tell me sir, how are they really coming along? I expect good things from them, but tell me truthfully how the training is going."
Grell smiles tenderly as Yeshua and Truman take a shine to the dire tigers. He speaks quietly and gently, not wanting to interrupt the conversation. "Yeshu, this is Felix and Gavisus. Draco cast a spell on them, so they are enhanced. You can speak with in your native tongue if you wish, but they also speak Common." Grell gives Yeshua and Truman as much time as they wish to interact with Felix and Gavisus, knowing that the pair really don't get many changes to interact with other dire tigers.
Noting Lowell's discomfort, Grell laughs at the distance his twin keeps from the tigers. "Hey Lowell..what's the matter..cat got your tongue?! C'mon over and visit." Grell thinks back to when he and Lowell were young and Gunther's black panther tore the head off of Lowell's favorite Teddy Bear. You know, come to think of it, Lowell never really did like the kitties much after that...I wonder...

Emrys is his usual warm and inviting self, however he is more quiet than usual. His mind is becoming more aware of things. Magics and lore once a mystery to him are becoming realized. It would be overwhelming if it weren't for his sabbaticals to the woods. Everything just seems so much clearer there. When joined with the root, the shared consciousness with nature lessens the stress on his own mind and body.
He is happy to see their tiger friends benefitting from the school. 'They are truly a terror,' he thinks to himself as he shares the relief of the young gladiator pitted against the lioness.

And then Yeshua and Truman meet the two dire tigers, and it is like a reunion of long lost friends. Felix and Gavisus but heads -- and they smell like lost siblings to the Lost Child and his Wild Sibling. They end up speaking in a patois of tiger and common, as they make introductions and size each other up. There's a clear connection there.
Lowell, on the other hand, is more reserved. The city-dweller rogue just is not comfortable around these beasts of the wild.
Emrys marvels at the might, the grace, the musculature of the beasts.
Zero looks around at the school's training yard, and is impressed. Well, just wait until he gets a look at the actual arena! That's ten times as marvelous!
With the dire tigers distracted meeting Yeshua and Truman, Grell grabs the chance for a private word with Master Quint. He is extremely enthusiastic about the tiger's likely encounters in the ring. He expects huge crowds and great fights.
"They've got some idea now about the procedures and traditions of the Arena, and they're ready for their first bouts. But before that happens, they need a debut. That's a private showing of their capabilities. We'll invite a select crowd of the top Chancers and Connosiers, the nobles who have big purses, and the biggest Arena book-makers. We'll put them through their paces. The only reason I have not done that yet is YOU have to be there, as their sponsor. Can you come buy later this afternoon or tomorrow?"
Royston and Evaris stroll up to Grell and Quint and catch the last bit of their conversation. Quint's gret enthusiasm is obvious.
"So how about it?" asks Quint, barely able to suppress his grin. "Can you come by this afternoon? I'm sure I can get a sweet crowd of high rollers, even on short notice."
He whispers, then, "I may have given some pals of mine some hints of what we've got here, and it looks like we're bound to make a mint!"

Lowell glares at his brother. "No, a cat does not have my tongue, and I intend to keep it that way." He sighs at the remembrance of his poor fallen teddy bear. The way it's head was ripped off like that all those years ago... 'Poor Mr. Teddy... I'll never forget you!'
Watching his brother talk to Quint, Lowell decides to go over to stand by his brother. He wasn't able to catch what they said, but he wants to hear what his brother is getting himself into, and if there is any way he can join in on all the fun. Not that he wants any money, thought. Lowell is content with just being around to keep Grell out of any trouble. He keeps a watchful eye to look out for the tigers though, not wanting to greet them.

Looking around at the gladiator training, and thinking about the Arena, Evaris realizes he's out of his element here. Certainly fighting is sometimes necessary; Pantheon's justice demands that people be held accountable, even those who would prefer to continue their wicked ways.
But this! To fight for fun, or bet on fights for sport....no, Evaris doesn't understand it at all. He stands politely to one side, waiting for Grell to finish his business.

Grell grins at Quint. "We would LOVE to come back this afternoon, right bro?" Grell playfully nudges Lowell. Literally bouncing with excitement, Grell allows Yeshua and Truman all the time they need to finish their conversation. If he has a chance to speak with Felix and Gavisus, Grell bows low to the giant tigers and then congratulates them on their hard work. Giving them a pat on the shoulder, Grell leans in close. "Great Felix and Gavisus...rest well in the next few hours, because this afternoon people are coming to watch you. If you do well this evening, soon we should be able to have enough funds to make a suitable home for you. Good luck...I'll definitely be here to cheer you on!"
On the way back to the Townhouse, Grell pulls Emrys to the side. "Hey Emrys, remember how you told me one time you could take me to a tailor? Well, I need to look good tonight. Think you can still hook me up?"

For Ariach fighting is a necessity to protect the ideals of Domi. He never has felt any pleasure fighting an enemy. He never has felt the excitement of watching a good fight. But he accepts that gladiator fights are legal and well esteemed. So he has no problems to come with his friends to watch the tigers fighting.

Yeshua learns that the big cats are eager for a chance to be in a real bout. Impatient even. THey fill him in on what they know of it, considering they have never been there.
Lowell stands quietly next to Grell, keeping alert for danger.
Emrys is supportive of Quint's plan to show off the dire tigers before their first bout. Evaris and Ariach have reservations about "the brutal sport," but they keep still, maybe not wanting to rain on Grell's parade.
Zero is intrigued by the notion of fighting for sport. Maybe he wonders how he would himself perform in the arena?
Grell is enthusiastic, almost matching Quint's excitement.
Quint is encouraged, and offers Grell more advice.
"We'll meet up in the sponsor's gallery," he says, pointing up at a third floor balcony. We'll have one tiger here and the other down here in the yard. The sponsors and bookmakers can contemplate one close up in person, and then see the other fight below."
"Grell, you're the sponsor, so you have to be there. Get better dressed up in your best clothes. Maybe better go out and buy new ones. Get someone with taste to go with you. And use some perfume and take a bath. Not in that order."
"The two arena scheduling masters will be there, and you GOTTA make nice to them. They can make or break a newbie."
"It does not matter what your friends wear, since they'll be down in the yard here. Just try not to scare anybody."
"Okay, be back here by 3 pm." Really, look good and be impressive. Polish up your gear. Tie your hair back. Money is on the line!"

Evaris smiles a little as he returns to the townhouse. Dressing up and looking pretty are things he can do pretty well. Unless, of course, he's standing next to Emrys and suffering by comparison.
His elven chain armor is already pretty shiny, being made of Mithral. He gives it a polish anyway. Over the armor, he wears a clean tabard emblazoned with Pantheon's symbol. His hair is short and needs little care; he runs a comb through it and settles down to polish his boots.

Here, I'll even get into some nicer close as well, just so that you aren't alone." That is, if I can find anything nice. Aren't my normal clothes good enough? But, I could always take a quick bath..... maybe. But I just need to make sure that Grell doesn't miss this chance! Lowell thinks to himself.
Grell's request almost makes Emrys want to dance. "Oh Grell! I won't do you wrong. I know several great tailors. Hmmm, which one ... ahh, I know, we can go see Maccaroni, he loves a challenge. Though he simply goes by 'Mac' nowadays. While we're at it, I have a few ideas about your hair. I quick trim, styled with a #3 brush, nothing too fancy. However we can get a bit more volume and luster if you allow me to apply a tonic of my own recipe. Just a smidgen elm bark, root of vervain, pulverized holly seeds, linseed oil and honey. Oh, this is so exciting!"

"Okay...we'll try this your and Lowell's way, but I get *some* say. I think I have a tunic in my closet that doesn't have too much blood on it. I'll go get it. I'll even take..." Grell shudders unconsciously "a bath. But NO PERFUME!!! If the tribe EVER found out that I got all froo frooed up, they'd kick me out. A orc's got to keep some measure of dignity!!"

Well, Zero, Ariach, and Yeshua are already totally spiffy ... so far as they can tell!
Evaris puts some extra effort into his appearance, and it shows nicely!
Lowell and Emrys tackle the big job of getting Grell up to snuff. Grell goes along in fairly good spirits.
And Grell ends up looking pretty darn good! Sure, he still clearly an adventurer, but at least there won't be any sneering or snubbing. Well, LESS sneering and snubbing!
At the appointed hour, the party arrives back at the House of Blood ... which is now notably neater and cleaner. Quint, dressed in a brand-new version of his gladiator garb, welcomes you all at the gate.
"Grell, excellent, you shine up real nice. Come on with me and I'll take you to the viewing gallery. The rest of you honorable Vanguardians, I have benches set up for you here in the courtyard."
Grell, do you agree to split off from the party?
Does anyone have any objection? Or maybe advice for Grell as he enters his greatest danger ever ... a lair full of aristocrats and high-stakes gamblers?

OOC for clarity: Note that you are at the House of Blood gladiator school, not the arena. There may be animal pens at the arena, but not here. However, there is a new sturdy shelter at one end of the courtyard that has been built to house the dire tigers. In fact, your benches are not far from that.
Anyone want a map?
The school is surrounded by a high wall. Inside the wall is a large courtyard used for fighting practice. There is also a school building. There is a lift to a third floor meeting room which has a balcony looking ver the courtyard. Grell and the honored guests will be inside the third floor room and can watch the demonstrations from the balcony.
The rest of the party will be on benches in the courtyard. If Grell is inside the meeting room, you cannot watch him. If he is on the balcony, you can see him.

Emrys gracefully pulls Grell aside and speaks in a low voice. "I must say I am quite impressed with your appearance tonight. You didn't fight me so much this time, and for that I thank you. This is exactly why I push to polish your rough edges. You are a warrior, yes, but you need to see this as a different kind of battle. Cleanliness, nice clothes, etiquette are the weapons and armor you need to win. It's no different than facing off with a monster with sword and shield. Just be confident and maintain powerful presence and posture but remain kind and inviting. Losing ones temper and composure is a sign of weakness in this kind of war. Do you wish for me to join you on the third floor? I'm sure Quint would allow you to bring a guest if you request."

Grell looks over at Quint as he tugs at his collar. Actually, I must insist that my brother Lowell accompany me. You see, we are twins, and if we are seperated for too long, my poor little brother becomes ill.
Grell listens carefully to Emrys, a thin layer of sweat already forming on his forehead. "Yeah...so yeah...confident but kind...yeah." Grell looks relieved at Emry's offer to stay with him, but he's a little worried that he won't be allowed to have more than one person with him. "Uhm...if you can stay with Lowell and I, that would be awesome..." Grell pulls Emry's in close. "but if you can't can you at least cast a message spell on the two of us so I can get your advice?"

Others could possibly overhear our whispers, so the only deterrent for that is to speak a language not known by most." Emrys then casts a second spell on Grell and says, in the Celestial language, "I gave gifted you with the ability to speak, understand and read Celestial for the next 24 hours! Lets hope there aren't any angels or gifted linguists in the crowd."

Grell asks for permission for his brother to attend. Quint agrees to this but not to Emrys too.
Emrys casts message on Grell and Lowell before they go, instead.
Ariach wishes his friends good luck.
Yeshua sees that the tiger house is clean and offers easy access. There are no locks or bars.
Royston asks Quint for details, but the man is too busy. He sends for his sarjeant to stay with you and answer questions.
Zero feels uncomfortable.
The team settles on the benches as the sarjeant appears. "Hello, I'm Stent, Quint's cousin," she says. She has the build of a fighter, and the scars to match. "What were you asking?"
Grell and Lowell enter the lift -- with Quint of course, and with Gravisus! Quint reminds the tiger to be on her best behaviour among the guests, and allow them to touch her and talk with them.
The lift gets to the third floor, and a crowd of people in fancy dress fill the room.

*GULP*
Never, ever in the face of battle has Grell every had the impulse to cut and run. Oh, it's not that he hasn't ever been frightened, it's just that cowardice was never an option. It's like the orc chieftain used to say "Better to die a hero than have your carcass drug through the streets as a coward!"
And yet, oddly enough, at the sight of the room full of hoity toities, Grell is move than tempted to bolt back through the lift and run all the way back to the Townhouse. More than a little uncomfortable with the high rolling crowd, Grell side steps as he attempts to back out of the room and bumps into Lowell. Just the presence of his outgoing twin brings Grell's anxiety level down a few notches.
Okay...okay...it's like Emry's says...this isn't that much different than combat. Step 1...breathe. It's hard to wage a battle when you're flopping around the floor 'cause you passed out like a pansy. Alright. Good...now smile.
Grell forces himself further into the room with a look that is much more like a grimace than an actual smile,
Alright now, if somebody comes and talks to you, just pretend they're Mom and just nod your head a lot and say "Really?", or "Mmmmhmmm". Leave the actual conversation to somebody who knows what he's doing...Lowell. Dodge and weave and you just might get out of this thing alive, Grell!

In the courtyard, Stent answers Royston's questions. "In this exhibition, the gladiators are free to use deadly force against the tiger, but the tiger will use only nonlethal paw attacks. The idea is to demonstrate the beast's self-control and ability to act in a civilized fashion. You see, the Arena masters are afraid that the tiger will go mad, leap into the stands, and wreak havoc. They want to see that even under extreme provocation, the tiger will not be a hazard to innocents."
"So expect blood. Your clerics are allowed to channel freely and cast cures between bouts. The bouts will be to unconsciousness."

Felix himself emerges from his den and pads over to you. He greets Yeshua and Truman with pleasure. Felix sees Yeshua eying the humanoid gladiator students on the other side of the courtyard. "Fear not, my friend. They will offer me no trouble. Look! They are afraid of me!" Felix chuckles.
Zero notices an old lady and two battle-hardened veterans at the balcony. Their clothes show wealth, all three, but the veterans -- a make dwarf and a female half-elf -- have a look, and scars, to show that they have seen battle, for sure.
Emrys longs to be upstairs too.
Ariach also looks up at the balcony, but does not see Grell yet.

Upstairs, two older men approach, and Lowell greats them with fair words, introducing himself and his brother. Quint smiles and introduces the two men: Arena Master Samels and Arena Master Jonas. Quint explains that both must agree before the dire tigers are allowed to compete in the Arena.
"Look at those lines," says Samels, admiring Gavisus over there. "This will draw new fans to the games!"
Jonas is less sunny. "I still remain to be convinced. Beast shows? What's next, circuses and naval battles? It compormises the integrity of the games," he says. "And what if those beasts attack the crowd? I need further convincing."

They are creatures worthy of our trust, and I do not think that they would ever hurt an innocent being without being provoked. As long as we respect them, they will respect us. "Evaris, Im sure there are plenty of healers at the games. Death in the arena is not very common, in fact it's quite rare. Gladiators are expensive commodities and as you can see with the crowd above, a substantially lucrative investment."
Grell is more than a little concerned about the conditions of the fight which seems deliberately unfair to the tigers. Then again, it took eight Vangaurds to put them down! Grell reluctantly agrees to the terms of the match, but insists on one condition. That the spell Deathwatch be cast upon Felix and that the fight be immediately terminated if Felix reaches unconsciousness. He also insists that if under any unforeseen circumstances, Felix should be killed during the match that the arena will split the cost to raise the tiger back to life.

Royston sits back to enjoy the competition.
Ariach is worried that events will offer a surprise. Adventurer's intuition or paranoia?
Stent tells Zero that channelling is allowed so long as it heals all equally. Other casting is not.
Felix chuckles at Yeshua's concern. "They have more to fear from me, the King Of This Town, than I do from them, even with my gentling gems."
Evaris is concerned that too much blood will be shed. Stent reassures him. "This is a demonstration, not a bout. Quint will not let it get out of hand."
Emrys echoes Stent's words.
Above, Grell is concerned about the danger to Felix. Quint reassures him quietly. "There will not be just one bout to a finish, my friend. I have five gladiators who will each fight for just a round or three. If the tiger takes more than a few scratches, then I will not have done my job. I want these good people to see the tiger's true capabilities, not to show them blood."
Lowell distracts the guests from this quet conversation by boldly and eloquently vouching for the tigers. Squelching his fear, he stands next to Gavisus. The giant tiger butts her head against him and purrs. That is, until Lowell says she is perfectly harmless.
"Well, maybe not perfectly harmless," she laughs. She flexes her paws and shows off her claws. "But the people in the stands are completely safe!"
Quint and the two Arena officials watch intently. Samels asks permission to take her paw and look at her claws -- he is impressed. Gavisus puts down her paw, then, and yawns to show off her formidable teeth.
Jonas is still clearly skeptical, but leans in to look ...
THEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT!
That is, the lights go out in the third floor meeting room. The darkness extends out to cover all but the balcony railing.
Friends, we are in combat rounds. Roll a perception check. If you beat a 10, then you can act. Otherwise you are off guard and actionless for this round, call it Round Zero ...

As the lights go out, Yeshua (P 33) and Truman (P 31) aren't surprised... They go into combat mode, looking for the nearest wall to back up against, while both snarl and stretch out their claws for combat... Truman calls out to Felix, their new tiger friend, asking him to come by them to strengthen their numbers in the fight...
Yeshua will also cast Magic Fang upon himself, boosting up for the fight...
They both watch out for threats and any danger, trying to discern who's friend and who's enemy...

With one hand holding his massive sword, and the other on Gavisus flank, Grell is depending on the mighty cat's hunting senses to help him locate his brother.

The Upper Chamber ...
Lowell's amazing senses detect the sound of something hitting the floor and crunching over thataway. Then everything goes black.
He dashes to the balcony and calls for help. He sees the two battle-scarred (but well-dressed) men and the elderly woman in the dimness at the edge of the dark. He alerts his friends below.
Grell draws his weapon and asks Gavisus to stay close and smell. She says "okay."
The Courtyard ...
Evaris draws his weapons.
Royston casts Shocking Grasp and holds the charge.
Ariach draws his own weapons as well. He hears people moving up there on the balcony and in the room.
Yeshua casts Magic Fang, and calls to Felix. The big cat comes up next to him. He swishes his tail angrily.
Zero casts barkskin and things about the most useful form.
Emrys tries to dispel the darkness, but it is not to be.
NPC and Enemy Actions
There are shouts and yells as people protest. You hear weapons being drawn. People are stumbling, and moving around.
Lowell hears someone approach, then Grell does, then Gavisus growls. Everyone hears a horrible scream. It does not require a dire tiger's nose to smell spilled blood, nor to hear the thump of a body falling to the floor.
You all hear Quint shout, "Bar the server door! Do not let anyone leave by lift or window. Can anyone counter darkness?"

IF the darkness is dispelled by Evaris, he will cast Arcane Eye. The invisible Eye will appear on the balcony and then move into the room and looks all around (Perception 35.)
IF the darkness persists, he will attempt to recast his own Dispel Magic on the darkness (Caster level check: 22).

The tang of iron filing the air around him, Grell gently touches Gavisus' flank as he whispers. "Easy now, while it is dark, keep your wits about you. The enemy is nearby, do not let him catch us by surprise."
Then he whispers in broken Elven which Lowell will undoubtedly know can only come from him. "Bro, I here close. Don't shoot. Cat here too. Really, don't shoot." Casting about while the darkness remains, Grell makes sure he keeps one eye closed so that when the light is restored he will still be able to see." Grabbing his sword with both hands, Grell braces himself for an attack he is sure is imminent. (Per=20)

Seeing the two battle-scarred men and the elderly woman, Lowell wonders if they were behind all this. Lowell decides to hold a shot. When he finally does shoot though, whenever that may be, he sneezes. (Uhg, natural 1.... And right after I got a natural 20!)
Lowell keeps a sharp eye out for any trouble from anywhere. (Perception: 28)

Evaris competently dismisses the darkness.
Yeshua casts another Magic Fang.
Royston shadows Evaris as the two of them stand under the third-floor balcony, about 20 feet above them.
Emrys thinks about casting an Arcane Eye, but is it worth it? The spell takes 10 minutes to cast. You could ascend the lift and look around on your own faster than that.
Or you could change into a bat and fly up. That's what Zero does. At the end of the round, he is in giant bat shape, hovering at the balcony. But is he safe there? Emrys seems worried about it.
As the lights return, Grell goes into defender mode, preparing to attack anyone who attacks him or Lowell or Gavisus.
Ariach heads to the lift, the only public way up to the third floor meeting room. The lift starts to ascend. Does Ariach step on and go up, let it go up while he stays below, or stop it from moving ... a simple matter of pressing a button that is labelled "Hold Lift."
Lowell is nervous, and fires an arrow into the floor at his feet. He looks around as the darkness ends, and he sees a remarkable sight.
Arena Master Jonas is lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Dead.
Quint gasps.

He then brushes himself off, runs his fingers once through his hair and mutters a few words of power. The thick plumage of black feathers that adorns the collar Emrys' finely tailored cloak suddenly begin to ruffle. Then his gracefully slender and exquisite form collapses and transforms into a tiny raven. He flutters his wings and takes to the sky, on his way to the balcony.

The darkness ends, and no one present makes any move to attack or fight (except for Lowell shooting the floor by accident, but no biggie!) Combat is over, for the moment.
Lowell gets right to the heart of the matter! "Who ... did this?" he asks quietly. Indeed, answering that question would seem to be the Vanguard's latest challenge!
Getting to the scene of the crime seems a priority. Evaris is lifted to the third-floor balcony by strong batty Zero.
Emrys changes into a blackbird and flies up as well.
Yeshua, Truman, and Ariach all take the lift up.
Grell cleverly takes an immediate look for possible suspects!
Royston gets to the heart of the situation, and seals off the area. Felix volunteers to guard the lift, so no one can get up or down. With Zero and Emrys flying at the balcony, that avenue is now sealed as well.
Quint shouts at his staff to bar and lock the servants' door.
Short of teleportation, you should be secure. So far no one has teleported out of here.

When the darkness lifts, Grell has the presence of mind to actually look around and fix exactly what it is he can see.
First, the body, lying in an expanding pool of blood.

In the general area of the body, nearish to Gavisus: -- A dwarf male with a braided beard and a mithril surcoat, unarmed. -- A half-elf, maybe half-drow, wearing exceptionally fine garments and many jewels. -- A human female, wearing spectacles, dressed profesionally in silk pants and jacket.
In other parts of the meeting room: -- In one corner, talking, a young human female in an embroidered green dress. -- In the same corner, talking, a balding human male, in an embroifered green suit. -- Standing alone against a wall, a human female, dressed in a servng uniform, carrying a tray one-quarter-filled with canapes.

It's obvious that for the moment there is no threat, so Grell sheathes his weapon and approaches the half-elf female with the lace dress on. Trying to remember that he still needs to use manners, Grell leans slightly forward. "Hey, do you mind if Iook at that blood on your dress?" If allowed, Grell looks closely at the blood. (Per=nat 20...woot, woot!) Being no stranger to blood paterns, Grell carefully considers how high up the blood is and the pattern that is on her dress, carefully considering whether the blood splatter was caused from her inflicting the wounds or if she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

OOC to Zero: Yes, the battle-scarred male, the pale old be-hatted lady, and the graceful cloaked man on the balcony are the same ones who were there from before the attack.
Evaris politely, loudly, and firmly asks everyone to stay calm, and still.
He goes over to the dead body. He is joined by the battle-scarred guy from the balcony.
"I'm not saying I don't trust you, friend," the battle vet says to Evaris, although in a voice that carries through the room. "But just in general, no one should do anything alone."
Evaris looks at the wounds and sees that it was a single MIGHTY claw attack that killed Arena Master Jonas. The battle scarred guy agrees. "I've seen a lot of wounds in my day," he says, "and this was a pretty amazing claw attack."
The girl in the green dress screams, "It was the tiger!"
There is a mass movement of people away from Gavisus.
Zero perches on the balcony. He is reminded of why he dislikes cities. Still, his presence deters any escape attempts in that direction.
Yeshua glares at the suspects in the room. He, Truman, and Felix serve to keep the lift exit covered as well.
Ariach stays on close watch too.
Grell examines the blood that has splashed in the attack. He sees now, with keen sight, that there are blood splatters on the lady in the white dress, and also on the dark man with the jewelry, on Arena Master Samels, on Quint, on Gavisus, and on Grell. The droplets are just much more visible on that white dress. Really, this is nothing that he has not seen in many many battles. In a fight, blood splatters.
The balding man in the green suit says loudly, "I want to leave now. Come on, Daphinia." He and the girl move toward the lift. The girl is clearly afraid of Felix and stands behind the man.

He moves to speak with the tiger. "Gavisus, it appears that Jonas was slain with a large claw. Did you kill him? If you had just cause, please speak now. Pantheon's justice requires a complete understanding, and if you had reason to strike, it is best to say so at once." [Diplomacy 35]

With Truman growling low, Yeshua, says politely but firmly, "Sir, as my friend said, we can't have you leave just left. We need everyone to stay calm and remain here, as there's been a murder and we need to find out what happened. If you are innocent, then you have nothing to fear and we'll keep you safe. If you are guilty, then that's another story... But you look like someone who wouldn't do this sort of act so please stay and wait until we're done with our questioning..."

Upon landing on the balcony, Emrys restores his natural form. "Pardon me," he says politely to the people there. He then enters the room, gives everyone a quick glance and then moves to the body on the floor.
(Perception: 33, to notice any details that may be interesting about the wound, body position, etc.) (Sense Motive: 36, to notice behavior in others that doesn't appear genuine ... bad acting.)
Emrys then looks up at the man, in the green suit, who is trying to leave (Knowledge [Local]: 14, to recognize him), and says, "Sir, it is in your best interest and of significant importance that you stay. Please be calm. Your cooperation will serve to expedite the matter." Emrys says this subtlety worded command with an authoritative tone (Diplomacy: 21).
Emrys then casts a divination and concentrates on the body and wound. The leylines must be very aligned ... the magic seems spark to life on its own.
(Leyline: 99. Casting Detect Magic. Looking for magical auras and any lingering/fading magical auras that may still be present in the wound. To see if the man had been slain by a magical weapon. If so, Emrys will want to identify the school of magic, Knowledge [Arcana]: 28.)

Lowell, still quite shaken by the Arena Master's death, scoffs at the idea of the tigers killing the Arena Master, but says nothing to stir up trouble. Understanding that he must stay calm despite what he is feeling, Lowell puts on his best smile and starts to calm everyone. He speaks directly to the man in green. "Please, do not go! I appologize for this, but everyone is a suspect here." He keeps his smile, but moves in front of the lift to stop the man from leaving. "Now, if we could all just calm down! My friend Yeshua is right. As long as you are innocent, you have nothing to fear. We will get to the bottom of this, you have my word. Could we all just calm down and not make any acusations first?" Grell sighs at the ignorance of the people around him. How in the Wold to they think Gavisus turned out the lights?! Tiger's don't generally think through premeditated murder...if they have a problem they just pounce. Grell examines Gavisus paws carefully, looking not so much for blood, but more for tissue and skin that would undoubtedly have gotten caught in her claws should she have caused the strike. He also checks to see if her jewels are still on her paws...the jewels that would prevent her from having inflicted this kind of strike. (Per-28...holy crud nuggets, the dice roller is loving me right now!!)
Grell doesn't even bother mentioning that he had his hand on the tigresses flank the entire time and would have felt her move to make the attack, figuring that the people would be less than likely to believe his story. Instead, Grell intends to let the evidence speak for itself...hopefully.

Evaris, Yeshua, Lowell and Emrys calm the people in the room and stop anyone from leaving.
And if that's not enough, Ariach's curt words and Royston's glaring stare put steel into the party's polite words.
Evaris asks Gavisus if she did the deed. "No! I didn't!" she insists, with some fear in her voice at being accused.
Grell takes her in hand, or at least, asks to see her paws. They are just a little blod-splattered, and the tiger seems to have stepped in the pool of blood with one. But there is no flesh, and the Tear of Mercy is still in place. It seems very unlikely she is the cuprit.
"I can't make the lights go out!" Gavisus points out.
But the man in green is determined to score points. He takes a step closer to Royston. "LOOK! That one's hands are bloody! And he clearly has some kind of reptile blood. Let's see your claws, sirrah!"
If anyone here is a firsthand expert on a wide variety of claws, it is Zero. He leaves his post at the balcony and looks at the wound. It is his belief that ... Now, since you are in bat form, how would you communicate that?}
Keen-eyed Emrys sees a clue on the floor -- a broken eggshell, and a thread within. The thread carries the faint aura of evocation, now expired.
Emrys notes that some of the people here definitely seem nervous. He sees several people tend to be moving around. That makes it hard to pinpoint auras as they shift.
Royston notes the same thing. He senses evil, but as people walk around, it is hard to get clear fixes.
Quint goes tot he balcony, taking Zero's place. He glares at anyone who comes near that exit. He also calls down to Stent, his assistant, who has remained below.
"Stent, send runners out to the town guard. Get a captain or a sargeant to come as quick as he can. And send to the Arena, tell them Jonas has been murdered at the House of Blood."

It doesn't come off, actually. A reminder of a foe we defeated." The paladin brushes the front of his chest. "As you can see, the blood is not fresh. I'm also certain you heard me shouting from stands on the arena floor. So unless you think I traveled from the stands to the balcony, murdered him, dried my hands without removing the blood, and traveled back to the stands all in the space of a few seconds... I'm sure you can see how silly that would be."
He turns away and addresses the assembly. His voice is authoritative and confident. "Hear my words, citizens. I am Royston Scalesworth, paladin of Domi. A honorable man has been slain. No one - no one - is leaving until they are cleared by the town guard. In the meantime, be calm in both body and spirit."

He then carefully extracts the eggshell and thread from the floor, scrutinizes it closely and then seals it in the jar with a cork. "Evaris, Zero," he softly speaks, "Look at this ... the thread has a faint lingering aura of evocation. Notice the eggshell too. Are there any eggs being served up here?"

"If we assume that the murder is still here on the balcony or at the arena at least, we should call for some priests who are able to detect lies or can read the thoughts of living creatures. Then the murder will be found soon." Ariach then looks squarely into each pair of eyes on the balcony.

Gavisus looks like she has been effectively cleared for the moment, so Grell takes a pointer from Lowell and picks a suspect to investigate. Since loud mouth green guy seems so adamant about pointing the finger in any direction but his own, Grell starts with him. First, he examines, the guy, carefully, particularly around his feet, trying to see if he can spot any blood or bloody tracks near him. When he was young, Grell had heard his Dad talk more than once about a magic hat that could make you look like you were wearing regular clothes when you were really armed to the teeth. Even if the murderer had that, he or she still can't cover up the tracks they made if they stepped in blood. (Perc=25) He speaks to the fellow in an friendly tone, though he's beginning to get a little suspicious of the guy. "Well bud, looks like your top two suspects haven't panned out. You got any more?"

Keen-eyed Yeshua notices that the eggshell is dry -- it was blown out and used hollow for whatever purpose it served.
Royston declares his moral authority and scans each person for evil most earnestly.
Evaris begins the legwork of investigating each suspect.
Zero offers more insight into the wound that killed the arena master. He seems to be exonerating the tiger.
Emrys sees that two fragments of the eggshell are pierced with small holes. Evidently someone pierced the egg with a needle, twice, blew in one hole, and the contents were forced out the other. Then it was dried.
He also notes the faint aura of darkness on the thread. No magic was cast on the eggshell.
Ariach wonders aloud about getting a caster in to read minds. The loud noble in the green suit reminds the heroes that enchantments are illegal to be cast on unwilling targets in the city!
Lowell "interviews" the server. He seems to make quite an impression.

Soon an official of the Plateau City Guard appears. Quint asks Felix to let her up the lift, and she ascends. After Quint gives a quick summary, she says, "Given the position of the victim and the nature of those present, my normal course would be to call an adventuring group here to investigate. But since you Vanguarders are already here, you may serve. I'll stand watch here as a witness, but you adventurers will have the task of proving an accusation."

Ariach is relieved when the city guard arrives. His feeling changes when the guard makes the announcement that the Vanguards have the task to investigate the crime.
"Excellent, we are proud to serve and appreciate your confidence. Now then, back to the matter at hand." After considering what he sees with the eggshell and thread, he says in the low voice to any Vanguardian near him, "Looks like the hollowed out egg was used to deliver the darkness; contained within, cast upon a thread. When the egg was smashed, the darkness would be released to fill the room ... very ingenious."
He then looks down at the wound. If Zero is correct, then the creature who did this would be otherwoldly, if not native to the Wold. Possibly a summoned clawed, creature from another realm ... one that can see within magical darkness. "That narrows it down."
Emrys casts another spell, but he does not announce it. If fact he tries to mask it as muttering to himself. (Leyline: 73. Bluff: 32, to conceal his casting as a mundane action. Casting See Invisibility.)
He then looks around as if he is merely listening to other people answer questions and talk amongst themselves. Looking all around, even above at the ceiling. Never letting his eyes stay focused on any one thing too long. (Perception: 31)
Lowell nods to the official, and come back to his friends to explain what he had learned from Selchie. "Selchie says that she felt something moving fast towards the tiger when the lights went out, anyone know why that might have happened?" He whispered.

Grell sighs as the Vanguard are chosen to investigate this crime. This is WAY out of his league! As if it weren't bad enough being locked in here with all these hoity toities, now he has to figure out who killed this guy. Grell briefly looks up to the heavens, wondering which Woldian god that he pissed off so badly. Oh well...since I'm screwed, might as well make the best of it... Grell looks around the dead body, trying to find any clues that might have been overlooked (Per=26). He particularly carefully examines the blood around the body and tries to locate the most likely direction the murderer was standing.
OOC: Yeah, so I watch a lot of Forensics Files...so sue me. :P I'm thinking that the killer (even if invisible) would would have probably left tracks in the blood, or at least they would leave an impression of their shoe/feet/paws/whatever if the blood landed on their feet. Just asking the DM to throw me a bone here. ;)

Evaris questions Daphinia. She seems to resent being questioned. "Well, I was standing right there with my father the entire time. We were talking about the beasts. I was just telling him that if they were slain in the Arena, I hoped he would see to my obtaining the fur."
Ariach is not sure what he thinks of the city guard relinquishing the investigation to the Vanguard. It is common knowledge, however, that the City relies on adventurers for many things other cities put to armies or constables.
Emrys deduces the functioning of the egg. He notes that if the egg were palmed, it could be dropped at a moment's notice (a free action), thus spreading darkness and leaving a villain free to do his dirty business. Emrys casts his spell to reveal anything invisible, but alas, that lead goes nowhere. Nothing in the room is hidden.
Lowell shares the information the server gave him -- that something moved near her when the darkness fell.
Yeshua continues to manage crowd control, keeping people off the lift.
Grell notes that Quint, Gavisus, Salvid Salvia, Lady Elspeth Indevan, Arena Master Samels, and both himself and Lowell have stepped in blood. His guess is that the attacker stood next to the Arena Master and struck him an amazingly precise killing blow -- the kind that you would think would be impossible in magical darkness. You would think it, but events here have shown otherwise.
Zero continues to manage the crowd, perhaps covering the balcony?
The constable, a Captain Portalls, seems content to watch and keep notes. Quint asks if you will be interviewing everybody, and when you think he can let the innocent folks go?

To Quint, he replies: "Yes, we will need to interview everyone. There's no reason, however, not to make people comfortable. Can enough chairs be brought from elsewhere in the facility that everyone can be seated? And perhaps some refreshments as well."
To his friends, Evaris murmurs, "Whoever did this may have stashed the murder weapon somewhere in the room. Can somebody with quick eyes take a look around for it?"

Evaris tries to continue questioning Dapinia, but her father draws her away. "You do not need to suffer an interrogation."
Evaris asks Quint to help make everyone comfortable, which he does. He asks the dwarf for his testimony, but the dwarf shakes his head. "Ach, lad, it was a magical darkness that even my vision could not pierce. I'll tell you one thing I heard though, just before the murder ... a strange sound, like ripping or something. I've only heard the like when I heard the sound of an old druid friend wildshaping -- and with your bat friend there. The sound of flesh stretching, changing. This was fainter than that, though, by far."
Evaris nods, maybe. He has heard the sound that Zero makes when he changes shape. An ... interesting sound.
Royston keeps watch carefully. He sees several details ... clues? Red herrings? He sees that the father and daughter in green are whispering to each other. He sees that the Auburn and Zoltan have their heads together. He sees that Salvid Salvia is casting a spell.

Lowell finds no murder weapon, at least none in the shape of claws that nature never forged.
Grell notes that the deceased was struck with exact anatomical precision needed to slay a target instantly.
Emrys declares his intention to make the dead speak. Lady Pergamon turns away. Marigold makes a sign of Gargul to ward off undead. The rest are impassive, except maybe Daphinia seems fascinated.

I donīt know magic very well but if you transform yourself, what happens with your clothes? Do they transform with you? Because if not, the clothes can help us to find him."

Zero stands at the balcony. He overhears Lady Pergamon say that they would not put up with these amateur shenangans in the Float. "Adventurers" -- and it takes a DC0 Sense Motive check to hear the scorn dripping off the word -- are not used to protect the aristocracy in the Float!
Yeshua communicates his info to the group ... some of the suspects are betraying nervous tics ... or something else?
Emrys confronts Salvid on his casting. "Uh, oh, sorry, just cleaning this blood off my clothes. It is too much! I need fresh air." He moves to the balcony.

The green-suited Lord Bellstir flinches at the word "assassin." He shouts, "Everyone knows an assassin has to study his victim before striking the death blow! I saw Melott studying me! He's the assassin! I demand protection!"
Melott rolls his eyes.
Lowell notes that Zeke looks like he is getting ready to do ... something? (OOC: He is using the ready action, and seems poised to act if his trigger is met.)
Evaris detects magic. There is a LOT of magic in the room. These are wealthy people, and all of them have some kind of magic on them. Let me know if you have specific questions or want specific details. You can assume that every suspect has at least two magic items.
Ariach asks about how transformations work. Maybe Zero can explain?

That is a weird one. Evidently the attacker changed and attacked in the same moment (round) ... only the greatest of shifters could do that! Something odd is going on.
You recall the exact sequence of events: The lights went out. Emrys tried to dispel the darkness and failed. A moment (round) later, Evaris did end the darkness. If only Emrys's attempt had succeeded! The killer might have been caught IN THE ACT! But only a moment later, the victim was dead and the predator was back in hiding again.
However, the question remains! How did the attacker alter his form, then attack, with unnatural claws, all in the same round? And then ... what? revert? in the very next moment?

Evaris looks to try to find auras that don't seem to be associated with a person (an aura in the room, or one on an object that doesn't seem to belong to anybody). He also looks for unusually strong auras.

Yeshua and truman wonder if they can pick up a scent or clue from the egg that was broken. They sniff the corpse and egg, looking for scents or traces that might give a clue on a possible perpetrator. (Think csi here, looking at the wounds, looking for scents on the victim from the attacker...)

Zero scrunched his face up in contemplation. "We are up against a very powerful foe. Great Shapeshifters can change into another form and attack in the same amount of time as a lesser shapeshifter can change into another form. I have also heard that powerful magic users can do the same."
OOC: A shapeshifter with "fast change" could do it. Also the Shapechange spell allows for changing form as a free action. As for seeing in the dark, "blind sense" wouldn't do it, but I think "blindsight" would.

The big tiger pads over to whoever has the eggshell and sniffs it.
"Hmmm," Truman purrs to Yeshua. "I smell human, perfume, scorpion and spider, talcum powder, grease from a kitchen." Only Yeshua, Felix, and Gavisus can understand the feline's words. Yeshua, please accept 250 xp for thinking of using scent. Clever.
Zero wonders how to find out more about the killer's motive.
He and Royston ponder the magic required to change shape and attack in the same round. It seems to them like the killer would have to be among the strongest of mages. But if so, why hide? Why not just teleport away?
Evaris finds magical auras only associated with the people in the room. Not on other parts of the room, nor implying spells that may have been cast around the room. The strongest magical auras are from the cape Zeke is wearing and the longsword Lord Melott wears at his side. Nothing on the people in the room seems more powerful than a, say, 3rd level spell. The items worn seem mostly defensive.
OOC: Note that Emrys said on Dec. 2, "We've exhausted everyone with questions and gotten nowhere," but just to be clear, you have not actually interviewed everyone in depth. Rather, you have spoken with each suspect briefly, but only interrogated Gavisus, Selchie, Daphinia, and Zoltan in any depth.

He asks them what the scorpion and spider, talcum powder, grease could mean. They could be parts of the spell, or maybe the grease could be from someone who worked in the kitchen...
"What do we know about the victim?" Yeshua asks, wondering which scents are native to the victim and which come from the killer...
While he's doing that, Truman (speaking Tiger) asks the other two to go with him and start sniffing at people, looking for a match to the scent, especially the human and perfume... They look tough and vicious enough that anyone who might complain about a feline merely sniffing them would think twice about complaining...

As Emrys considers what they've learned so far and decides he has seen enough of the crowds reaction to his announcement. He then follows it with another, "Be not afraid for what is about to happen. I am not summoning the spirit of this fallen man. I am not reanimating this body into a state of undeath, oh no that would be wrong. Everyone, every soul, adds their voice to the grand choir of life. All lives leave behind an echo of their existence. That faint echo is what I now raise to a voice. Vanguard, listen well, you may hear something I do not," he then smiles and says, "but I doubt it."
Emrys begins to draw runes on the floor, arranged around the body. He then takes a small candle from his pouch and lights with a magical spark.
(Leyline: 75. Casting Prestidigitation, to light the candle with a spark.)
"Please be patient, the casting of this magic takes a little time and concentration. So please do not disturb me." Emrys begins chant words of power. Over the next several minutes, his voice is joined by more voices, all in unison like a choir, until the incantation is complete.
(Domain spell. Casting Speak With Dead. Lasts 7 minutes. Emrys asks three questions. 1. Please name anyone you suspect that would want you dead? 2. Would anyone you know profit from your demise? Did you notice anyone approach you with an egg just before you were slain?)

Ariach suggests a physical search of the suspects. There are several gasps, and even the constable, Captain Portalls, looks shocked. Lord Bellstir declares, "Lay a hand on my daughter, and you'll pay!"
Yeshua's friend Truman goes a-sniffing, but the other two look to Quint, who gives a slight shake of his head. In Tiger, they tell Yeshua they'll let Truman do the sniffing.
Yeshua smells the perfume on Lady Elspeth Indevan, Zeke Tevels, Lady Daphinia Bellstir, and Lady Nancill Pergamon.
Truman spells "human" on everyone except Zeke and Zoltan.
He smells kitchen grease on Selchie Ryen.
He smells talc on Lady Elspeth Indevan.
He smells snake and scorpion on no one.
Lowell wonders if the grease implicates Selchie after all!
Evaris asks Marigold Al'Garik what she saw. She declares, looking at Lowell, "I am a trained observer. I observed that the serving girl had her hands full of her serving tray both before the lights went out and after they light returned."
She pauses, then adds, "I also observed that those three [Lord Geoff Melott, Lady Nancill Pergamon, Michel Auburn] were at the balcony at the other side of the room both before the light went out and after it returned. Unfortunately, I have no observation that will clear myself."
Royston is befuddled.
Emrys uses his magic to gain the testimony of the dead. The answers from the deceased are: "I am a purist in the administration of the games. Those who would benefit would be those who seek more spectacle. Those who want to flood the Arena and hold naval battles. Those who want to bring monsters, like these tigers, into the arena. Those who want fights to the death. My enemies are those who want to destroy tradition. I noticed no one with an egg."
Zero watches and says nothing.
Inspiration Result for Evaris's hero point use: Evaris recalls that talcum powder is used for baby bottoms and disguise kits. Evaris also recalls that some bloodlines of sorcerers -- the abyssal, the draconic -- have the ability to grow claws in an instant, and then to retract them after an attack. In fact, he recalls Royston doing the same! [Still, Royston seems like an unlikely suspect. He's not even on the suspect list. Then again, his hands are bloody ... just sayin' ... ]

After Truman communicates his findings to Yeshua, he'll (Yeshua) whisper it to several members of the party in their ears, again, where there won't be much chance to overhear them. He'll also mention that he's going to try to get a reaction out of Elsbeth and see what happens...
Truman will go over to Lady Elsbeth, sniffing her again with a growl (assuming Evaris passes on the info about talc), as he's concerned she may not be who she appears to be. Yeshua asks her while watching her closely, "Madam, how old is your baby? We sense something that tells us you're either hiding something or not who you appear to be? We scented something on the dead that is also on you..."
Also, Truman will try to get a sense of the perfume itself... Does everyone have the same perfume type or did they use different perfumes?

"That was quite enlightening, wouldn't you say? Logic dictates that the killer is a purist as well by offering up the good Jonus here as a sacrificial lamb. It makes perfect sense. It was quite clever to implicate the lioness by murdering the man who opposes her entry into the games. A very concerted effort, it was, to place the two together and execute the man by means of claw attack for all these fine, outstanding witnesses to see. Very clever indeed. Surely such a scandal would have squelched the tigers' chances to compete in the games or any event that challenged tradition. The only question that remains ... who is the purist among you?"

Evaris confirms through whispers with Yeshua that Zeke does NOT smell human, but Lady Elspeth does.
Emrys digs deeper into the motives of the killer, suggesting that Jonas was sacrificed by those sympathetic to his cause in order to serve a greater purpose. Perhaps he might wonder if anyone will make arrangements to raise Jonas from the dead?
Emrys also wonders about specific magic items. But without magic and time and spellcraft, it is impossible to identify magical properties quickly, from a distance, unless you have more powerful magic ... maybe Arcane Sight?
Zero wonders at his friends' ability to track details and motives. He seems at a bit of a loss. Still, there ar always perception checks to make, knowledge checks to roll, suspects to question ...
Royston seems to suspect that the investigation will turn to action at any moment. Why does he think that?

Emrys realizes, being a highly gifted vocalist of song and spoken word, that her voice is not that of an old lady!

Evaris questions Zeke, and the clearly nervous fellow unconsciously grasps at his cape as if at a lifeline. "I didn't see anything!" he exclaims. "I don't think anyone here did it! I think it was an invisible assassin who is getting away right now! You heroes should head off after him!"
Evaris senses that Zeke would say anything to get the interviewing done, and that he is fearful of alienating any of the rich and influential people who are present. And that he is ready to bolt!
Yeshua suggests to his friends that it has gotta be one of two people. He tries to learn more ...
... while Emrys, guarded by Ariach, deduces that the "Lady Elspeth Indevan" is an imposter! And he challenges her with this!
Quick on the draw, Lowell is ready for any attack or attempt to flee.
Grell dozes off, then jerks awake! Royston is calm ... and ready for anything.
And anything may be about to happen!
"Oh stuff and nonsense," says the "Lady Elspeth."
"Rattle my cans and dash my doohickeys!"
After pronouncing these nonsense words, she pauses for a moment ... and in that moment casts a silent stlll spell ... and Vanishes!
[OOC: yes, she vanishes with an APG Vanish spell! Them assassins got some mad APG tricks up their sleeves!]
Vanishing is sufficient to trigger Lowell's readied shot! Please roll 1d100. On a 1-50, her total concealment means you miss. On a roll of 51-100, Lowell can roll an attack as usual.
It would have triggered Emrys's spell, but you need line of sight to target that spell, and the enchanter no longer has line of sight.

Evaris is a bit surprised when "Lady Elspeth" vanishes. His one useful spell for this situation, Dispel Magic, has already been used to counter the darkenss earlier.
But there are other things he can do. "Quickly!" he says. "Bar the door! Block the balcony! Don't let her escape!" He is speaking not only to his companions, but also to the others in the room, many of whom are also people of action.
Evaris himself bolts for whichever of the two (door or balcony) is closer.

Evaris quickly assesses the situation. There are three ways out of the room -- Lift, Staff Door, and Balcony. Felix is covering the lift. Evaris calls for people to cover the door and the balcony. Evaris himself goes to the door, which is nearer.
Ariach joins Evaris at the door.
Zero, near the balcony, calls for passengers, and changes into a giant bat. Now he too can tell the square the assassin is in, but she still has total concealment to him.
Most of the nobles and wealthy patrons are shocked and surprised. Marigold Al'Garik has enough presence of mind to draw a short sword and move to the balcony next to the battle-hardened Lord Geoff. Not surprisingly, they are the Connoisseurs of Combat.
And Lady Pergamon says to Zero, "Thank you, my hero! I will reward you for this!" and she climbs on his back. She seems to think that he was volunteering to carry her to safety.

Yeshua and Truman hit for 43!
Evaris hits for 9 more, with a spiritual hammer!
Ariach double moves to block the exit.
Lowell shoots and misses.
Grell tries a grapple, but falls short of the assassin's CMD.
Zero berates his poor word choice, but carries the old lady to safety. The lady dismounts and thanks Zero profusely.
The Connoiseurs of Combat help Ariach block the exit.
The other guests head away from the fight.
THE ENEMY ==========
The assassin casts defensively. She casts a shocking grasp and swipes at Truman. She hits touch AC33, a crit threat and confirms vs touch AC17 ... (And she makes her miss chance for being blind). That confirms against the cat's Touch AC15. The assassin hits Truman for 28 damage electrical.
Then the assassin casts a Quickened Blink spell! She has a 50% miss chance.
Another two attackers creeps in, AIRWALKING INVISIBLY from the balcony ... seen by Emrys, but surprising Yeshua. The new attackers are MEDIUM DOGS! They flank Yeshua.
D1 bites at Yeshua, hitting AC36 for 24 damage plus 5 more damage electrical. His free trip attack hits CMD36, knocking Yeshua prone.
D2 attacks the prone Yeshua, hitting AC32, critting against AC22, and then when you add in the prone bonus, definitely confirms, inflicting 21 more damage.
Truman and Yeshua take altogether 28+24+5+21= 78 damage this round, and Yeshua is prone.

Seeing the attacks on Yeshua and Truman, Evaris moves across the room toward them [to J-8]. Unfortunately, he can't get close enough to cast a healing spell without also healing the assassin. He knows there are more invisible foes somewhere nearby.
Hoping that all the foes are in some way evil, Evaris casts a Holy Smite, centered on the assassin he can see.
[20-foot radius, centered on K-12. Good-aligned creatures are unaffected. Evil creatures take 22 damage and are blinded. If they make a DC 19 Will save, they take 11 damage and are not blinded. Yeshua, being prone, knows he needs to get where he can fight and get into a better position... He takes a restricted withdrawal (only move his normal distance but no AoO's) by rolling to the SW to F16, knowing he'd be in real trouble if he stayed flanked... And then as his move action, he'll stand and prepare himself for battle...

Emrys is becoming increasingly impatient with this assassin and her pets. He told her to surrender and she continues to fight ... 'oh, no she didn't!'. His eyes turn red with anger ... they actually turn to a glowing shade of crimson, the color of woldsblood! The leylines are close, he can taste it, and the powers of creation and destruction are seized tightly and eagerly within his grip. Emrys directs these transformative energies at the dogs. The others should make little work of a blind assassin.
(Uses a Hero point to cast two spells. Leyline: 67 & 90, woot, free cast. Casting Baleful Polymorph on each of the dogs. Fortitude save 21 vs. being turned into tiny, 1HD, hamster. Will save 21 vs. losing their extraordinary, spell-like and supernatural abilities, and gain the alignment and ability scores of their new form.)
Emrys then moves west and then south (F9), giving a wide berth to the combat, on his way to render aid to Yeshua (who has supposedly moved to F16).

Yeshua crawls away five feet as a move action and then stands up. [OOC: Cannot combine a five ft step with a move.]
Truman makes a full attack on Lady "Elspeth." [Cannot back off and then charge in the same round.]He inflicts 19 damage and, with the spiritual weapon, leaves her barely standing.
Then Evaris casts his Holy Smite!
The imposter assassin takes full damage from the Holy Smite. She crumples!
One dog fails the save, one saves. Neither dog is blinded. You can deduce that the dog that failed the save and was not blinded is therefore neutral.
Both dogs run away, airwalking, off the balcony to escape. The one nearer the exit takes an AoO from Marigold. The other is subjected to AoOs from Truman, Yeshua, and Ariach.
Combat is over.

With slight tremors, Grell stands there, frozen. Dogs...dogs. Nasty killer evil dogs. He shakily walks over to Lowell and gives him a weak thumbs up. He's pretty sure if he were to talk that his shaking voice would give away his terror of the beasts.
Pulling out some rope from his backpack, Grell begins tying up the assassin. (Will need an Escape Artist DC25 to escape).
OOC: I tried posting at least 3 times on my tablet yesterday, but it ate my post. I know I missed, but I really did try.

Evaris moves to the assassin, and uses the smallest of his healing magics to ensure that she stays alive, if she hasn't perished already. [Cast Cure Minor Wounds]
Then he begins working on Yeshua and Truman. [Cast a Cure Critical Wounds on each of them. Yeshua heals 21; Truman heals 26.]

Yeshua and Truman appreciate the healing and it revitalizes them. To Ariach, he says with a pat on his back, "My friend, thank you for your support and devotion. That's the best gift a member of the pride can offer another. That healing fixed us somewhat and we may need some more healing later after we rest. For now we celebrate our victory..."
While Truman laps up the blood in a victory feast, Yeshua searches the assassin's body for items of interest... "Shall we call the city guard and let them know that we found the killer? I'm still curious as to the primary motive and who else she was working with... There may be other conspirators and if there are, the team needs to root them out..."

Emrys has changed one dog into a hamster.
Lowell notices that the crowd of nobles is looking at the heroes with a fair measure of amazement! You took down the killer so fast, so effectively! Most people are kind of in shock. Except Daphinia and her father, who want to exit asap, and are unhappy if they are not allowed to leave. The father demands that the lift be released.
Zero is unhappy too. Because he did not get to strike a blow!
Ariach makes sure that Yeshua is all right. He indeed says he is and thanks his friend.
Truman has a little tasting.
Grell goes to bind the assassin, and finds her dead.
Evaris's minor cure is insufficient to raise the dead.
Grell and Yeshua find that the dead attacker is no longer old ... nor a half-elf ... nor a female!
Yeshua finds the following items on the assassin ---

Emrys walks over and gathers up the hamster. "An adorable little fellow, yes you are!" He then looks back at the fallen assassin with regret. "This is unfortunate. It will make our job a tad more difficult to find out who hired you and your hamster." He gives a slight sigh disappointment.
"Three cheers for the Vanguard," proclaims Quint, and a smile returns as he gives a slight bow. "We the Vanguard live to serve. We most humbly thank you for your praise."
Once he has satisfied his public relations obligations, he will return to the body, recast a simple divination and scrutinizes the assassin and her belongings. He urges the other Vanguardians to help with the unmasking of the villain and looks for any identifying evidence.

Lowell wishes that the assassin had not died and sighs. They could have gotten useful information! But, he isn't too sad. Seeing that the crowd approved, he notes that the Vanguard might be getting a pretty good reputation through this! But, his happiness does not last long. He sees Daphinia and her father wanting to leave, but refuses. "I'm sorry, but no one can leave yet.. Could you please wait for a while?" He asks the father. (Diplomacy: 17)

Grell breathes a sigh of relief when the dogs disappear/are turned into hamsters. How his brother could see anything desirable in a creature as evil as a dog is beyond him. Still...important heroy stuff is to be done, so Grell adopts his most winning smiles, grabs a glass of wine and salutes Emrys. "To the Vanguard!!"
Grell waits patiently for Emrys to cast his spell...pretty sure that he's going to get to hear a corpse talk for the second time today...which is pretty creepy when you think about it.

Zero does his best to slurp some wine, bat-style!
Evaris channels energy to heal her wounded friends. And the hamster.
Grell basks in the admiration of the onlookers ... and wonders if Emrys will be performing more necromancy.
Truman finds the hamster more than a mouthful. (Note that a polymorphed creature retains its original hit points, making that a pretty tough hamster! Yeshua watches the detections and hopes to leave soon.
Captain Portalls, the constable, surveys the situation. "Everything seems to be in order. Mystery solved, miscreant captured, and danger resolved. Excellent work, heroes. Feel free to allow me to resolve the mundane details, and may I offer the thanks fo the City."
He dismisses the other suspects, allowing everyone to depart.

Lowell smiles when the Captain tells the group that they have done well. Finally, we're finished! Or, are we? Lowell, like Ariachs, does not think that the Lady Elsbeth was alone in this endeavor. But, he trusts the Captain. For today, everything is okay. They can deal with whatever comes their way as it comes. So, for now, the Vanguard are good to go!

Yeshua and Truman are both ready to go, happy to help solved this crime. Truman's first few bites of the hamster convinced him that it wasn't worth the trouble...
Yeshua is interested in dividing the loot too, as the proceeds could help the two in their future combats... He already has a belt and cloak of protection, so neither one is of interest... The amulet of natural armor looks nice or the money could be spent improving what he has or maybe something to help their melee attacks...

Emrys had set the hamster aside to identify the magical gear, and was not too terribly pleased that it was fed to Truman. As soon as it is discarded, Emrys gathers up the hamster and examines it to determine if it's still alive. If so, he will cast a curative spell to save it.
"If our services are no longer required, we should certainly remove ourselves and leave the good constable to his work. With the rest of the Vanguard, Emrys returns to the townhouse. He has plans for the hamster (if it still lives). Their official investigation may be over, but his own curiosity is not yet satisfied.

The hamster is fine. It reacts exactly like any other hamster, but with more hit points. Emrys picks it up, cures any residual nibble damage, and stows it away.
Funny stuff aside, Ariach thinks there is more to this story ... but a victory in the present will suffice.
Quint thanks the party again and tells Grell he will send word when the arena masters make a decision.
Felix and Gavisus say their farewells to the group, and especially to Grell, Yeshua, and Truman.
Evaris leads the team out of the gladiator school and headed for home.
As soon as you like, you are back in your townhouse, none the worse for your brush with an assassin.

Ariach doesnīt think it is a good idea to send all suspects home but he has no idea what he can do to reveal lady Elsbethīs accomplices.
Back at the townhouse, they relax, bandage the remaining wounds and look forward to the distribution of the loot... They also are concerned that the mystery wasn't fully solved and hope that won't come back to haunt them...

Never in his whole life has Grell been so happy they he moved to Plateau City and that he has the company of his brother. Life.Is.Good.

Grell, on the other hand, revels in the party's victory.
Together, the heroes enjoy a pause. The house is comfy, there is loot to distribute, and an adventurer's life sometimes comes easy.

Emrys later finds a suitable container to serve as a nest for the hamster; complete with food and drink. He'll let the rodent rest for now.
