The second attack comes just as sudden and unavoidable as the first.

A little frustrated, Nikolai apologizes for the bad judgement thinking that the Fist would be ignored and proposes picking up camp and moving on.

"I know that means no rest for the mages, but there's no rest here with these things either. We know the trail well enough so it is only a matter of keeping an eye out on night prowlers. Tinker and Michael take the scouting position and we'll follow."

With that he starts gathering up what few items they've set out and waits to take up a spot in the rear and has Linden take up the lead point behind the scouts, with William, Pru, and Bruagh.

Sir!, I think I know their game. They want to keep us from resting, keep us on the move, keep us reacting to them. These guys will be hard to hit, and hard for the non throwers to get to. Once they've wore us down, exhausted our 'casters then they'll really come for us. They feed on fear and death. By running we are playing right into their hands.

OOC Response: The wisps had to make contact, so they came down. But no one had a perception check high enough to locate them, and the people they hit were flat-flooted and couldnt really react.

In the dead of night, Nikolais Fist packs up and prepares to leave. Since they chose to bypass the West to Central Blood-Cypress, they are currently on the road between the two.

When they stopped to camp, they were only an hour or so away from the central warren. As they travel the eastern trail, following the fetishes in the dark is not too difficult, thanks to those with Darkvision. Of more concern however, is the Will o' Wisps.

While they do not attack again, not outright, the closer you get to the central warren, the brighter the trio of orbs begin to glow, hovering above you and the canopy of trees!

DM Ooc: So I understand the plan, are you traveling road-style past the central warren, or taking it as far as the closest Cypress you can find, which would be the one that sends you back West? I've marked your position on the "Map so Far" map.

DM Ooc2: Everyone needs to make a DC 15 Fortitude Save or suffer from the effects of Fatigue. Highlight to display spoiler: {Characters who do not get a full night's sleep may suffer the effects of fatigue. If a PC does not get at least 6 hours of sleep, she must make a DC 15 Fortitude save or be fatigued and take a --1 penalty on all other checks and saving throws against sleep effects. A second night without sleep requires another DC 15 Fortitude save. A failed save results in the character becoming exhausted and the penalties increasing to --2. A third failed save on the next night increases the penalties to --3.}

Nikolai brings up the map from memory. "We don't want t use the next one up. We need to pass the main warren. One thing to our advantage is if the gnolls know what these colorful lights are, then they'll more likely leave us alone." he says with some mirth.

(Note: I know you skirted the main warren by a large detour, the growls and such are not coming from the warren itself, because it is far from earshot. They are coming from from that general direction, which is north of you.)

Pru knows she has to conserve her spells, especially if the group isn't resting tonight, but she is not without resources.

She casts a Prestidigitation, then does her best to create the visual effect of a Burning Hands spell. What she wants is that sheet of flame (or flame-like illusion) blasting upward toward the sky, in obvious warning to the wisps. And unlike a Burning Hands, this one will stay "on," so it's a continuous sheet of (illusory) flame.

She readies an action to cast a real Burning Hands if two or more wisps come into range of it.

A strange dance goes on between Double Fist and the Will o' Wisps.

Rocks fly, Wisps attack, flour explodes, and attacks are made.

Nikolai has the satisfaction of feeling his fist impact the soft, surprisingly spongy body of the Will o' Wisp. He also realizes that despite his well placed hit, the creature takes no damage. The same thing goes for the others who use melee attacks against the creatures.. they simply are hit hard enough!

Poor Tinker, also suffers this dejection. His bolt is on target, but bounces harmlessly of whatever type of protection it is that these creatures possess.

(Will of Wisp - AC 26)

The only other display of might comes from Prudence, who in no uncertain terms communicates her threat of pain and fire to the creatures. They quickly back off, glowing brightly. Some colors flash, and one leaves the other two, streaking north.

Not long after, a series of howls erupts through the swamp, coming from the north as well, and close enough that you can hear not only the barking of Gnolls and hyenas, but the heavy panting and footfalls of something very very large.

If it were just the WoWs, he would encourage continuing their casual hike, but a quick assessment that their current situation is about to change for the worse, he issues the order to make a strategic withdrawal as fast as they can to the east.

"Change in plans, Fist. Our map shows a Blood Root somewhere around here real close but in the direction of all that noise. Tinker and Michael, lead the way due east as fast as you can. Linden, stick with Pru and William. Bruagh and I will hold the vanguard. Chances are they are hunting some beast that just happens to be coming our way."

He hands the Wand of Cure Light Wounds to Linden, then has the Necklace of Fireballs ready for use to slow down anything coming their way.

Nikolai is quick and efficient with his orders.

(Correct me if I'm wrong!)

Michael and Tinker are to move at full speed due east, eschewing stealth. If the scouts attempt to maintain any semblance of sneakery, they will have to move half speed.

Linden, William, and Prudence are also ordered to the east, behind the scouts. I assume that no lack in speed allows them to maintain pace with Michael and Tinker, unless they are ordered to create a separation.

Nikolai and Braugh stay put, holding the line against an unknown Gnoll threat from the north.

Please verify the plan, as it will greatly affect the next DM post.

DM Ken - Map So Far - Wisplight Fight
Monday December 8th, 2014 9:49:50 PM

Nikolais Fist pushes east through the swamp. Not following a marked path however, they find they navigation is both slow and confusing, especially at night.

Despite their best efforts at haste, a few factors play against the heroes. Because of the slower members of the party, the rear guard finds itself closer and closer to the gibbering howls of the Gnoll hunting party.

Worse, ahead and around them are the brightly glowing orbs of the Will o' Wisps, who weren't as hindered by the thick swamp. The wisps are glowing something fierce, each as bright as two torches.
Despite your maneuvers, you find yourselves in the jaws of a quickly closing trap. The Will o' Wisps crowd in front of you, threatening to shock anyone who tries to move past them.

A quick count is also troubling. There are currently no less than five of the glowing creatures, rising above an ominous mist that has swiftly crept through the fog!

Fog: Foggy squares obscure line of sight and grant partial cover to a creature within them. This does not stack, so putting multiple squares between you and your foes does not give full cover. The fog is only waist high or so.

Trees: The tree hexes are impassible.

All Terrain: Is difficult terrain, so -5ft movement for all and no charging.

"Looks like the Wisps want to have fight happen, and we can't fight the wisps. Means we will just have to kill all the gnolls right?"

"Find a line of trees to put to your back!" he calls out to the front line.
To Bruagh and Michael he says, "Stay with me. Don't get heroic ideas and try to fend them off on your own. We make a line up ahead," and points to where the front went around some trees.

Nikolai palms a bead from the necklace (7d6) and holds it ready as he moves into position.

Nikolai gets to a position where he sees the other four and where he can try to block any incoming gnolls but sees that both Michael and Bruagh commit the usual tactical error of going forward without support instead of forming up in a defensive line. It's too late to stop them but there's nothing he can do to Fist members that would rather do heroics than follow orders. They will get surrounded and outflanked no one will be able to help them.

Nikolai does not wright them off, though, and holds his Fireball bead ready to toss when he sees a good grouping of the enemy. He may get his friends in the fire as well, but he has to think of the Fist as a whole.

As the party of Gnolls crashes through the swamp, they skid to a brief pause.

Gnollish Speakers: Highlight to display spoiler: {"What? Weve been tricked! There's more than a couple!"}

Without much pause, the Gnolls continue forward, with one larger Gnoll barking the orders to advance. Muscles ripple over this particular specimen, and his violent eyes gleam red. He inhales a deep breath and howls loudly, then begins making a few gestures.

Grabbing the throwing axe hanging off his belt, he hurls it into the air. It bursts through the canopy and into the night sky, exploding in a large white flare that takes a shape you've been following for weeks.. that of the fattened Gnoll fetish.

It hangs in the air but a moment, the dissipates. He ends his movement in the strange mist, sinking back into the swamp for cover.

Vs. Braugh

Three of the feral hunters surround Braugh, then hesitate, marking his heavy armor. They attack as one, and one hack from an axe sneaks through his skilled defenses. One straggles is not so lucky, and Braugh trades a wound for the life of a foe.

Miss, Nat 20 - no confirm for 6 damage, Miss.

Vs. Michael

As you hang to your spot in the tree unobserved, to the gnolls, (Your DM has decided you would not be able to fully climb a tree stealthily without a double move at least.) you feel a disturbing presence hanging in the air behind you. A voice whispers from the wisp, chill as the air in a grave.

"All must fight. Pain is the price of life.."

The creature gently rubs its body on Michael, sending shocking jolts through the halfling.

Hit AC 32 for 6 electric damage.

The rest of his pack race forward, though a number of them seem to unsure of their new situation. One of the Dire Hyenas, a beast you have encountered before, hesitates in its charge. Quickly a Will o' the Wisp darts down and delivers a nasty jolt, surprising the beast and eliciting a sharp yelp.

Vs Linden and Tinker

Two of the Wisps flash colors and hover slightly towards you. You hear a whisper in the fog..

He swings at the one behind him and begins a fighting withdrawal toward the line that the group has now had time to set up.
Attack hits AC 20 for 17 damage

Braugh continues the offensive, killing his second Gnoll this fight and his umpteenth since arriving in the swamps. He moves back from Gnoll and backsteps, unaware of the tiny glowing orange bead rolling on Nikolais fingertips.

Meanwhile, in the tree, Michael tries to surprise and capture a wisp, an exercise that might have paid dividends were the wisp smaller or less nimble. (Dm is ruling that since the wisp has its natural attacks, it is not unarmed and not subject to losing his dex bonus from Catch off guard.)

Prudence, mutters about her flighty Thumb, and chases him down, bestowing him with magic armor. Prudences associate in magic, William, directs an earth elemental to assault a dire hyena, but it flails against the beasts hide without impact. William himself begins the process of conjuring another minion.

Tinker has the most success with his crossbow to date, a glancing hit against one of the Dire Hyenas. The creature yips, then bears down on the dwarf. From behind him, Linden reminds Nikolai of the Sacrifical Bond they share.

Nikolai gave an order, and the party muscle ignored it. Not one to be denied a strategic opportunity, he lets fly with the magical item, which singes the fur of Gnoll and Hyena alike... and unfortunately.. the fur of a Dwarven beard.

---------------

Vs. Braugh

Braugh finds himself drawing a crowd, of both Gnolls and Wisps. The creatures seem to glow brighter with each swing of his axe, feeding off the dying howls of the Gnolls in Braughs immediate area. None of the Gnolls manage to break through his guard for now.

Vs. Michael

Michaels attempt to capture the Wisp didn't seem to provoke much reaction. The creature hovered back a bit and observed him further. After a good pause, it circled the tree once, seemingly agitated that the halfling was still in it.

The Wisp glides forward, shocking the halfling again. (Hit AC 33 for 7 damage)

"All must fight. Pain is the price of life.."

Vs. Nikolai

The wounded Hyena crashes towards Nikolai through the cloud of smoke. It snaps its jaws, but is repelled by the magical force gifted to the monk from Prudence. The singed Gnoll fares no better.

Vs Tinker

Always noble, the stalwart rogue positions himself to shield both Linden and William from further attack. In return, he is beset by foes. While the snapping fangs of a Dire Hyena find no purchase, he feels a sick thud as an axe chops into his armor, mangling the flesh beneath. Before he can recover, the Paw Leader hefts his great sword and slams it in a sideways swing into the dwarfs lower armor sections, drawing a huge red gash through his stomach.

(Dire Hyena, Hit AC 14. Miss. Gnoll, Nat 20. Confirm vs AC 22. Hit for 22 damage. [Max Damage on roll], Paw Leader his AC 20 for 19 damage. Total of 41 damage)

The Wisps hovering near William and Linden converge, their whispers urging the spellcasters to fight. Displeased with their apparent apathy for the combat, both are attacked. So too is Prudence, who has yet to try to inflict pain upon a foe.

Vs Linden: Hit Touch AC 24 for 4 damage.
Vs William: Hit Touch AC 25 for 12 damage. (Concentration check: DC 22 + Level of spell cast or lose spell)
Vs Prudence: Hit Touch AC 24 for 6 damage.

Bruagh then swings into action, quite literally. As if it is an afterthought, he disembowels the gnoll next to him as he moves in behind the Hyena. As it falls to the ground with it's guts as garters the Dwarf draws on deep stores of heroism and drives his axe into the hyena savaging Tinker.

Notes
1 hero point used
Still taking the minus to movement and not charging

Also a note, I posted at the same time as Nikolai in the beginning of this fight. Call it not following orders, but I thought the tank was supposed to tank, not do complicated maneuvers in a swamp to get away from the foes. You guys have weird tactics. The wisps like my tactics fine, probably why I am not being barbequed by them.

with the sack attack missing, Michaell Drop to the ground and draws his rapier, he does so positioning himself to flank the gnoll flanking the dwarf. He slides the rapier lup under the gnolls ribs, puncturing both lungs and narrowly missing the heart. Two swords blur in and nearly slice Tinker apart, only the toughness of Fist training keeping him alive... for the moment. But the stoic dwarf plants his feet and doesn't move; he's going to block the gap until it is not needed anymore, or die trying! "Stop arguing with Nikolai and kill these things!", he growls at Braugh through clenched teeth.

Pulling his Urgosh high, Tinker swings it about to clear some space. As he makes it more difficult for the foe to get at him, the rush of Braugh provides an opportunity, and Tinker feels the axe side kiss the Dire Hyena. It is a shallow cut, but with the animal distracted, Tinker is able to wound more deeply than first seen!

Braugh cuts through a Gnoll easily as he makes his way to his Dwarven comrade. His axe removes most of the flank tissue of the Dire Hyena. Yelping in pain, it barely makes another step before Tinker jams his urgosh into its neck, which slays the giant animal.

Linden and William are faring somewhat well. Linden casts a sanctuary spell, hoping to keep the Wisps away. Williams eagle has a little success, its talon pulling some of the soft spongy tissue away from the surprised Wisp.

Michael emerges from his tree and stabs his nearest foe, but doesn't quite have the results he was hoping for. While he wounds the Gnoll, he finds that Braugh - his flanking partner, had moved south to aid Tinker! He's been left high and dry!

Prudence and Nikolai work together in their own pocket of fighting. Much to her relief, Pru notices that even though she leaves herself exposed, the Wisp does not attack her as she fires her ray at the Hyena. What does not relieve her however, is seeing both of Nikolais blows thud harmlessly against the hide of the Dire Hyena.

Vs. Prudence

One of the Gnolls eyes Prudence warily, held in check by the frightening Will o Wisp. When the orb backs off however, satiated by Pru inflicting violence, the Gnoll steps forward and swings. [Miss vs AC9]

Vs. Nikolai is not so fortunate. The Dire Hyena, though wounded, fights back against the monk, sinking its teeth into Nikolais arm! [Hit AC 23 for 10 damage. Trip CMD 16.]

Vs. Michael notices too, that his Wisp also backs away to let him fight. The Gnoll he stabbed turns, and swats the halfling with his axe blade, cutting the small scout deep. [Hits ac19 for 11 damage]

Vs. Tinker does his best to stay on his feet, fighting defensively even after felling the Dire Hyena. He thwarts the attack of the beta Gnoll easily enough, but when the Paw Leader steps up, Tinker sees a flash of metal, gleaming under the light of the moon that has managed to break through the swamp canopy, then sees no more. He hears the maniacal chuckles of the Hyena captain, then hears no more. He feels the cold swamp water rushing through his armor and clothes, and the soft thud of his body on the earth, then feels no more. [Hit AC 25 for 17 damage. Tinker was at 1 Hp. His damage would reduce him to -16, which is more than his constitution score of 14. Tinker has died.

The Wisps all seem to respond to one of their kind being damage. Three of them streak through the air towards the summoned eagle, and two of them overwhelm the bird with shock attacks. [Hit ac 25 and 26 for 8 damage.]

The third hovers and presses against Lindens Sanctuary, but to the shock of all, it holds! Linden is safe for now! [Nat 1 vs Will DC 15]

Michaels attempt to sneakly flank the gnoll was interrupted by the fact that the gnoll wasn't flanked and that he forgot to be sneaky. He pays for it as the gnolls axe bites deep into his body. With that and the Wow's love taps, he's feeling a bit woozy. He takes a 5ft step back into the concealing mist. he is also fighting defensively

OOC: just a thought: I think the 'Living Creature' is a Category, not necessarily an Condition. That is, stone, vegetation, etc. does not apply. On the other hand, tissue is still living for more than the round in which blood stops flowing. Tissue, in this case the whole dwarf body, is still 'Living', so to speak, and since the Rebuke Death works on 'Living'... I know it is a stretch.

On the other hand, If Tinker has Hero Point to spend, he might could spend it to get the damage amount reduced by 2 points and thus at exactly -14, then the Rebuke Death would work according to DM's interpretation.

What does Yo DM say about the Hero Point idea?

DM Ken: He can absolutely spend the point if he has one. I should have suggested that in my DM post. Good catch Jon T.

Linden quickly realizes that Tinker is in trouble, and there's nothing he can do about it. Deciding to do what he can, he soldiers on and heals Michael, treating many of his wounds.

Braugh quickly steps in to avenge the fallen Tinker. He swings his axe hard, and it bites easily through the Gnolls armor, and into the barky, gnarled wood-like flesh below.

Worried, Michael hits and runs, ducking back into the shadows. He isn't completely concealed, so he cannot attempt to hide while being observed.

Prudence the Hyena Cook continues her string of mayhem against 4 legged enemies, and blasts the Dire Hyena through the eye with a flaming bolt, where it falls in a smoldering heap. Nikolai, who had an arm cocked to punch the beast, instead punches the nearest Gnoll, which grunts in pain before falling to the ground.

Of Williams summons, only the earth elemental remains. And with its target destroyed, it waits for a command from its master.
----------------------

Snarling at Braugh, the Gnoll leader shows some expression that borders on panic. Looking behind him, he turns and runs back through the mists, shoving the lesser Gnoll towards Braugh. Rounding the corner, he cocks back his greatsword and swings at Prudence, the force of his blow crashing through her magical barriers and into the young sorceress. [Hit AC 21 for 19 damage]

[Prudence - AoO please.]

The abandoned Gnoll, clearly shaken, fumbles his swing at Braugh.

Near Michael, the Gnoll he dodges turns its fury on Ernie the Earth elemental, but his axe fails to harm the living rock spirit.

The wisps continue to seek out those not involved directly in the combat, this time focusing on William and Linden.

William dodges on of the pesky creatures, but is zapped by the other. [hit ac 21 for 5 damage] Lindens Sanctuary is broken, and the pursuing Wisps shock the cleric with angry zeal. [Will saves of 24/25/20 vs DC 16 Sanctuary. Hits against AC 30 and 21 for 8 and 4 damage.]

Somewhere from the south, the pained yelp of a Hyena, or possibly a gnoll, cuts loud enough to be heard over the din of combat.

From the southern woods, a shady figure promptly fires two arrows in rapid succession at the Gnoll leader. The arrows have a dim yellow glow as their flight path connects them directly to the creature's back (Hit AC 27 for 11 damage and AC 25 for 11 damage).

The archer takes a short step forward and takes note on the battlefield.

" Shoot something, make it think you are actually fighting cream puff. That's all they want."
Indelicate but sound advice greets Williams cries for help. Bruagh couldn't understand how the others couldn't comprehend the straightforward instructions of the wisps. Everyone that had overtly attacked was safe from their predations, even Michael who had tried to capture one.

OOC
Also I have bad news. If the attacks on William miss by 5 or less they also take out an image. A small change from 3.5 to Pathfinder on a well used and loved Mage spell.
Oh, and Bruagh has a 6 charisma, don't take the cream puff thing to heart 8). My DM in Tree is making all of us play to our flaws, as is Woldian policy....sooo....
Their attacks are stupidly high, and touch, so dodging will only buy you so much leeway. Just attack, even if its a miss and appease them. Fighting both groups will surely get the fighters killed once all the support gets killed by zapping.

The ray of energy smacks the Gnoll in the shoulder, pushing him back for just a moment. He grunts and starts forward again, glaring at Pru. Then Nik's tanglefoot bag soars through the air, splattering across the chest of the Paw Leader. He stops advancing for a second and looks at his armor, then wipes the substance away before resuming his attack, looking over his shoulder to make sure he continues to outpace Braugh with ease, even in this swamp. Oddly enough, he seems to be moving faster than the rest of his kind, even under these conditions.

Two arrows slam into his back, eliciting a fierce growl of pain. He is bleeding badly. and things aren't going his way.

As Braugh passes, the Gnoll in the southern area takes a swing, but misses badly. He chases after Braugh and tries again, but fails a second time.

Linden casts a spell to bless and bolster his friends, and Michael takes a stab at an enemy, who misses him in return.

William backs away after ordering Ernie forward to attack. He sees the elemental miss, then starts trying to save his own skin from the Wisps, who only seem interested in him and Linden.

The Paw Leader starts to move directly into Prudences defenses, then checks his rear again and sees Braugh barreling towards him. He takes a few long steps, drawing an AoO from Prudence again as he slams his greatsword down into her force armor, though this time with much less gusto.

Vs. Pru [ Hit AC 20 for 14 damage - Pru is standing but now has the disabled condition. ]

(When your current hit point total drops to exactly 0, you are disabled.

You gain the staggered condition and can only take a single move or standard action each turn (but not both, nor can you take full-round actions). You can take move actions without further injuring yourself, but if you perform any standard action (or any other strenuous action) you take 1 point of damage after completing the act. Unless your activity increased your hit points, you are now at --1 hit points and dying.)

The wisps continue to attack Linden and William, repeating their strange message.

"All must fight. Pain is the price of life.."

Vs. William: 1st attack - 1d3 = Image - Second attack - evens hit william - odd

Both of Williams images vanish.

Vs. Linden: One of the wisps bounces off Lindens armors. The other two however, shock him with their strange electric bodies. [ 10 damage to Linden]. They didn't seem to bother with the Aoo, but instead spent the time observing his actions... as if judging their next move by what he decided to do.

Prudence Grundle, the least physically talented of all the Fist, shows once more that her fighting spirit might just be stronger than that of the most stalwart warrior. Embattled by a vicious Paw Leader, she spends her last conscious moment struggling against her attacker.

As the magic missiles slam into the Gnoll, he grunts loudly and appears to lose focus. He takes another mini step, then two more arrows from behind leave him bleeding and dirty, but still alive, in the swamp group.

Linden marks a new target for his divine blessing, but takes no other action. Prudence is still unconscious.

It isn't much longer before the last two Gnolls are swept away, Michaels flashing blades and the strange newcomers bow see to that. The Wisps themselves even seem sated, flashing happily from one color to the next. However, they do not leave.

They begin to circle, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. One approaches without caution, hovering above the field.

"Some still hunger...some have fed well. Pain is the price of life..pain is the feast we seek. One more will suffice.. on which shall we dine, Paingivers?"

The wisp hovers dangerously close to both Prudence and the Gnoll Pawleader. The choice it wants you to make seems obvious.

Nikolai has had enough patience with these blinky things. Now that he knows they are intelligent enough to communicate effectively, he decides that it is time to quit playing their games and play his own.

"Listen you Will 'o Wisps! You want Pain? We will give you Pain, your own if you don't leave us alone! If you are still hungry, go to the warren and make the gnolls fight each other! You do that and you'll have more food you can possibly know what to do with! But these two are off limits!"

By then Pru is healed and gets up on her feet, as if to make Nikolai's point.

"Gather together Fist! Linden, pick up poor Tinker! William, take the healing wand from Linden! You over there!" he points at the archer. "You've proved you are on our side against these gnolls. Join us and we can all get out of this miserable swamp together.

And Linden, we are going to have to strap the gnoll leader to your back. It's the only way.

Now Fist, stay real close. If a Will 'o Wisp attacks us, we all aid Bruagh in his attack against any one of them close enough! Got it? Now let's get to it!"

Once all is set, if the WoW allow, the Fist heads east again towards the eastern Blood Root tree.

OOC: so the plan is stay bunch together, and if a WoW attacks, let Bruahg only attack the WoW while the rest of us use Aid Another (Attack DC10 for +2 to Bruagh's roll). Aid Another only works for melee attacks, not ranged attacks. Linden will carry Tinker in his arms and the gnoll leader will be strapped to Linden's back.

The Will o' Wisps whir through a cycle of colors, and all but one move to bar the path of Nikolai's Fist.

"No.. it must be one of these. Only these will suffice. The other Gnolls taste of ash and leave us unsatisfied. The warrens have a prophet.. and his wrath we do not incur...it MUST be one of these!

The Wisps hover just slightly out of range, then finally form something like a wall.

Then there are other problems.

Far off, but closing, you hear more of the chilling howls of the Dire Hyenas. You recall the first and only spell cast by the Paw Leader.. a giant burst of light fashioned in the icon of their strange god. Perhaps it served as a signal? You imagine they aren't terribly close, but the wisps have shown the capacity to funnel two groups together once already.

And then there is the Paw Leader himself, who has nearly freed himself from his bonds, after having been revived by Lindens healing.

Grief for the fallen Tinker has the Fist on edge.

Braugh and Linden argue over the treatment of the prisoner while Nikolai stays uncharacteristically silent.

Prudence, eager to move on, conjures the magic flames she used before, but notices that the Wisps do not seem to be deterred. Michael makes a suggestion to the Wisps, but receives no reply.

As the party starts to press forward, the argument between Braugh and Linden ends abruptly, with Linden making a profound statement.

"I do not think I can remain part of Nikolais Fist, if this is how they treat a prisoner."

With no incoming plea of encouragement for his stance, and instead only a scathing retort, Linden displaces the corpse of Tinker, then turns and trots away from the others, heading in the direction of the Bloodroot alone. The wisps don't seem to care about his passing at first, but his inner conflict serves as a strong beacon to three of the creatures, who follow him into the woods with piqued curiosity.

Two however, refuse to leave. The Gnoll leader is unconscious on the ground, next to the corpse of Tinker.

OOC: fell asleep last night. Sorry. On the other hand...
I don't know what Jay meant by 'heard things' and so forth, but Jay, if you are still lurking, a talk to the DM and to the PTB over what is bothering you is a better solution than just bailing out.

IC: Nikolai was about to give Linden the What the hell? for healing the gnoll when using the wand on individuals would do. He at least could have taken the Fist far enough away to not affect the gnoll. But Bruagh beat Nikolai to the 'punch' by knocking the gnoll leader out again.

Since Bruagh did what Nilolai was going to do, the monk Thumb did not interfere with the altercation between Linden and Bruagh, waiting to see what would happen. If he jumped in, Linden would certainly feel the Fist was against him, and that is not what Nikolai wanted. Linden needed to still feel a part of the group. Stabilizing the gnoll leader, Nikolai thought, was a step in the right direction, but when Linden stormed off, Nikolai knew it would not be of any benefit to chase after him.

First Nikolai addressed his Fist. "Men, I don't know what misunderstanding Linden has, but abandoning his Fist while in the middle of a job is not a solution. If anyone here has a problem with the way things have been done, he or she either addresses the issue with me or with the Captain when we get back. I take all responsibility for our actions and take all reprimand any is due.

We were tasks to bring back a leader and we have one. What these Will o' Wisps want we cannot give."

Nikolai is reminded of one gnoll that is bound up and still unconscious.
DM JT: if this is not correct, let us know.

Then he hears the distant sounds of more hyenas and gnolls and knows time is up. He addresses the Will 'o Wisps.

"You'll have no more from us. There is one over there that is dying. Take him or leave him. But if you impede us, you will die. The gnoll leader you wanted is no longer dying, our Mage that can hurt you is no longer dying and still can hurt you. Stand in our way and you will die."

He takes a small pill out of his belt pouch and gulps it.
DM: the pill is a Squinky's Skill Pill won last year at the Yule Tide party, gives a +1 Luck Bonus to any one skill attempted, the effects last until the next skill attempt. Which is now.

Intimidate +4 +1(pill) = 12

"Now Fist, form up. Let's move out!"

OOC: logistically, I'm not sure how it will work, but I was thinking of Nikolai and Zie taking an arm each of the gnoll leader and dragging him while Bruagh, if he can without hindering his fighting, carries Tinker.

Pru and William up front, Bruagh in the middle, Nikolai and Zie right behind. We move at best speed possible to the east. The closest Blood Root tree is probably north, but that's where the gnolls are coming from. The next closest is east.

Checking in

You Have Suffered Much [CDM Jerry]
Monday December 22nd, 2014 8:48:07 PM

A staff appears to one side of the Will-o'-Wisps and powerfully strikes the one on the right, causing it to crash into the next and the next and the next. The glow from each flashes and goes dark. Spongy bodies drop to the swampy ground.

The walking staff continues to feel its way through the swamp, but there is no sign of an owner as if he was not quite in sync with this reality.

Then there are footsteps. Shadowy red. The smell of blood...Woldsblood! Then old-worn boots.

They stop.

An audible sigh.

The rest of him appears.

A large muscled human with black hair, looking like a cross between a barbarian chief and a king of noble bearing. His cloak is dusty and well-traveled. His attention is focused on something off in the distant cypress trees. A lone figure disappearing into shadow.

He continues walking.

Dancing around his knees is an imp of demonic nature only about 2 feet tall. Its skin is red. It has wings that flit nervously like an obsessive/compulsive being off of its medicine.

"Master, we've left the Shadowlands. Yep. Left it. Ooh! Something's died. Lots of death!" the imp says excitedly.

His master keeps walking.

"Master! Adventurers! Battle! It has brought us here! Is this the destination of our journey? All that walking through icky Woldsblood for this? Why Master? Hey! Stop!"

The master keeps walking passing about 20' to the right of the party.

"Uh, master? We've been spotted. How can that happen? How could THEY pull us to this icky place? Yuck!"

The black-cloaked man stops.

A bass voice, deep and full of power, answers. "THEY HAVEN'T. I AM DRAWING THEM HERE."

Sure enough, the shadows of night clear, full of violet hues, starless. The land, however is red. In the distance, a slow-moving river of blood with rivulets flowing into it at a more rapid speed, making a weird plopping sound among the usual sounds of a fast moving stream.

The master's face is chiseled by the effects of wind and the elements. On it is a strange smile...

...or is it a grimace.

With a bearing that is both understanding and sad, he says, "YOU HAVE SUFFERED MUCH."

With a sigh he settles slowly onto a rock and with a wave a campfire appears.

Rubbing his arm where a welt seems to appear, he sheepishly raises a hand in greeting, but makes no sound.

This can't be!
The Drow is terrified. He drops the longbow and falls prone as he attempts to catch it off the ground.

Vynghol... wait. No! This is not another nightmare... I'm awake. This is real.
He covers his forehead with the free (right) hand and stands from the ground, barely. After a brief moment of panic, Zieluvit tries to reach his thoughts and realizes the spectral figure ahead.

Not a Drow. Maybe an omen?
Zieluvit turns and notices the group is also experiencing the scene, then turns back to stare at the new ambiance.

They can see it as well. And Vynghol is here. This is real. Adverse but... I can act! I can get through!
For the moment, the Drow is shaken, he's aware, but struggling to keep calm.

Nikolai is taken aback. He recognizes the rivers of Woldsblood. They had been in a similar place not too long ago, but then, they had petitioned Gargul for the life of their friend. This time no one had petitioned it though! Did they do something wrong? Was the use of the gnolls for the Blood Root tree an affront to the gods somehow?

Nikolai humbly bows to the big barbarian of a man. On the one side of it, no more Will o' Wisps to deal with. He did warn them, didn't he? Their deaths certainly can't be blamed on him, that's for sure. I'm not gonna say anything until accused directly. As a matter of fact, I'm not going to say anything unless directly spoken to.

Michael is momentarily taken aback by the sudden change in scenery and the appearance of the imp and...God? Yes! This must be one of the gods he has heard spoken of! What was this gods name...gangrel? No..gargamel, no. Gargul, closer...best just to address him as "lord", "Sir" and "Master" where appropriate. His last spoken words were perhaps a question and maybe a statement, but they were spoken to invite a response. Nobody else seems to be volunteering. What the heck, I've never spoken to a god before!

Well Lord, these little glowing orbs that caused us so much trouble seemed to think that Pain is the price of life.

If the wisps bodies are with us on this plane Michael picks one up and shows it to the God, if not he uses his hands to make a outline roughly the size of one.

Tinker though, he paid with his life so that we might live

Michael points at Tinker.

and these gnolls spent their lives in hopes that we might die

Michael points at one of the dead Gnolls.

our cleric, Linden took much abuse from the gnolls and the glowing orbs, but what hurt him most was the loss of Tinker and the cruelty of battle.

Michael looks thoughtful for a moment,

so I think I can safely say Lord, that Suffering is a scale which is relative to sufferers and those who cause suffering, but absolute in degrees when viewed from the abstract. I have suffered, but I think my compatriots have suffered more...relatively.

Oddly though, that time they went seeking Gargul, but this time... what brought him here? They hadn't petitioned the god yet and Nikolai was content to remain quiet until the god spoke as to what power brought his attention to them.

"BE AT PEACE," the stranger intones. And you are.

No fear remains. Not of death, the Shadowlands, or of the stranger himself. No compulsions to bow or show obeisance remain.

"Evening Prudence. You've done well. If I may, try writing to your family again. They might just write back this time."

The sounds of a hog rutting around nearby can be heard. "IMP, WE'RE HUNGRY. PREPARE SOME FOOD." The imp with a grin hops up and rushes off.

::swiiishh::

The imp can soon be heard to say off in the silver pink fog, "Can one of you louts help me drag it over and prepare it? Make a spit."

Soon, there is a rather large hog roasting over the fire.

"BRAUGH, SIT RELAX."

Time passes. The hog begins to smell good.

Looking at Zieluvit he says, "CHECKER, WITH TIME THE WAKING NIGHTMARES MAY BECOME...HELPFUL. LISTEN TO THEM." The stranger seems to listen to his own nightmares for a time. He grunts.

"NIKOLAI, TEACH ZIELUVIT YOUR MEDITATION TECHNIQUES. IT WILL HELP HIM FIND SOME PEACE."

The hog cooked, the imp takes it down with the help from some in the party and begins to cut it up and parcel it out. "Dig in folks! It's good! Yum!

It is good. Refreshing. The smells of the campfire ease your souls.

Gargul says, "TINKER, LIVE."

And he does becoming solid. The welt becomes a scar. It both hurts and feels good.

And as simple as that, Daemar Torvalsson becomes substantial once more. His first new breath is in the middle of a fetid swamp with the unwashed bodies of half a dozen others. And it is the sweetest smell in the Wold!

Having no fear, Tinker turns to Gargul and bows from the waist. "Thank you, Wandering One. Even in the lands of Rest I may have felt unrest knowing these good friends may have needed my help and I wasn't there. I will do my best to honor your gift by remembering I don't have to protect everyone all the time."

Almost sheepishly, Tinker looks at Nikolai and Prudence, Michael and the nearby William, Braugh and the dark stranger with the bow. And doesn't really know what to say.

Michael is unaccoutably happy when the Dwarf reappears. He hasn't known him very long, but he feels a kinship with this dwarf. Then he takes a swig of his drink, finishing it.

"What is it boss?" Imp inquires.

"I'M NOT SURE YET." Gargul answers.

Finally he can contain himself no more. "MICHAEL OR IS IT MYCHAEL...OR ARBIT? THE HALFLING FROM THE LAND THAT DOESN'T EXIST. OR DID YOU MAKE THAT UP TOO? NO IT WAS GIVEN TO YOU. YOU DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE AT A TIME IN YOUR LIFE WHERE THAT IS SO VERY IMPORTANT. SEARCH! FIND OUT. IF YOU HIDE FROM YOUR TRUE SELF MUCH LONGER IT WILL HURT YOU AND THOSE YOU ARE GROWING TO CARE ABOUT. I HAVE SPOKEN!"

Turning to Tinker, he nods. "PROTECT YOURSELF TOO, DWARF. THIS BRAVE BAND NEEDS YOU MORE THAN THEY KNOW."

And with that, Gargul stands and starts walking. Off and away into the distance. The Shadowlands fade and the locale returns to the location of the battle. The fireplace is still present as is the roasted hog. Silver stars dot the sky.

Zieluvit not lost sight on Gargul. He was uncertain if what he experienced was "really real". Maybe an amazing illusion planned by the contractor? Probably not. Things were just too sudden for a mind like his that every day struggles with a slumbering chaos.

As for the apparition turning material, Zieluvit didn't notice the "fallen comrade" and the revenant Tinker are the same. The storm he lives with is occupying most of his cognition at this time, as the Drow tries to appease the load of doubts with uncertain deductions. He takes many full breath circles to come with a simple response to the dwarf. "What just... Hello. Agh!"

Nikolai had not had time to ponder, or lament, Tinker's death. It was enough for him to keep Pru from the same fate and keep his Fist together while trying to extricate them from a near impossible situation. He had done all he knew to keep his friends safe and it seemed all for nothing. At least until Gargul appeared.

Now he lifted his head up when addressed directly. He knew nothing of this stranger that just appeared. The swamp has upchucked a number of surprises in their few weeks here but a friend was totally unexpected, although most welcome.

"I'll do my best, Sir," he replies humbly.

The camp and food is most welcome sight and rivals that of Home, considering how long they'd been in a dismal swamp with hardly a hot meal, not counting Pru's roasted hyena and gnoll, which may not have been edible anyway.

However he felt sort of guilty enjoying a meal as all was well with the world. It isn't until Gargul brings Tinker forth that Nikolai's countenance brightens. The monk goes over the gives the dwarf a big hug but says nothing, a little tear dribbling down his check said it all.

Now he can fully relax and enjoy the roasted pig. He waves goodby to Gargul as the Shadowlands fade and they return to the swamp.

"Oh yeah. We still have to get out of here somehow," he mumbles, mouth full of roasted pig.

Nikolai's welcome makes the stoic dwarf uncomfortable, but Tinker realizes that he likes it too, like, well, like family. Awkwardly, the dwarf gives a quick hug back. "Uh OK, it is good to see and feel all of you again too." And then to cover his embarrassment, he continues. "So I guess we eat and move our prisoner out to Hornfowl before finding the last lair."

He walks by, storing Vynghol inside the quiver and salutes Nikolai a way of not the Surface Drow he lived with, but the Drow Below, with a palm in front of the chest pointing upward and the thumb touching the chest.

"I have a small matter to discuss. Actually, I care little for your mission, but wandering the swamp by myself would be fairly stupid. I was headed to the Citadel, but with your permission I may fight for your group. Since traveling alone around here is too dangerous and you look like you could use Vynghol's accuracy, we both benefit from being allies."

On the other hand, we've completed most of it and it would be wise for us to take advantage of our gains and head back to the Citadel. You are under no obligation as pertains to our mission, but deciding to join us you accept me as the commander of this unit, as appointed by the Captain. Tinker frowns, not because of the dark elf's offer to temporarily help with his bow nor his seeming reluctance to join the Fist. By his ancestors, the Agents don't have the authority to make Zeluviet a part of the mercenary company anyways. What bothers Tinker is he is not sure if Sergeant Nikolai could legally accept auxiliaries under his authority. The Tinker thinks more and remembers the Captain had them looking for potential allies as well as opponents. Yep, Zeluviet should fit that hole nicely.

Happy with his thoughts, Tinker doesn't say anything, only helping himself to the hot food left by Gimp the Imp and waits for Nikolai's orders.

On another thought, Tinker also reinforces the captured gnoll's bonds with his manacles and tightened by a simple lock. Let's see the hyena man get out of those!

Nikolais Fist gains an ally, and spends the night in the now dry-star covered area within the Cursed Swamp. the feelings of oppression and danger are gone from here, and forever will be. No matter how menacing a curse or hostile the landscape, the touch of a God come in peace leaves a firm print upon the Wold.

The cartographers of the Fist, several of whom were devout worshipers of the God of Life and Death, would pen a name next to this small spot of swamp. "Tinkers Rest", would be penned by the spot where the dwarf had been lain low, then arose minutes after.. as if it had been naught but a nap.

Gathering their gear and prisoner, the party heads off towards the nearest known Blood Root plant. Of their Gnollish pursuit, there was no hard evidence. But as they approached the plant, they heard the gleeful cackle of a very loud imp, and the frantic yelps of distraught Gnolls.

The party is now in front of the Blood Root within its grove, and still has its replacement scroll of sending. If they activate this particular plant, it will send them west again, which is away from the path leading home.

Once at the Citadel, you will need to apply for membership like anyone else. Prove yourself experienced in combat, and you can forgo the three years of new recruit training," Nikolai smiles.

While resting or taking his turn on guard patrol, Nikolai has time to think and sort through the day's events. Although the loss of Tinker was a blow, it was only momentary, thanks to the unpredictability of Gargul. None had expected him to show up. The greatest blow was Linden's abandonment of the Fist. That will be very hard to explain to the Captain, since even he didn't know what happened. He could loose the status of Thumb for that. On the other hand, his appointment to be Thumb was never indicated to be permanent and he viewed the position as a rotational one to give each one some Command experience.

At the Blood Root, Nikolai ponders their next action. They can't keep carrying the prisoner along. They could really use reinforcements. They can't officially require the drow archer to continue on with their mission.

OOC: I thought we were heading East to the Teleport Site. Oh well.

"Looks like we are best served cashing in our chips. Carren's Fist is still out here and perhaps they can finish off scouting out the last remaining gnoll warrens. Let's head to our original teleporting tree and get back to our horses, if they are still alive, and the Citadel. I'll contact HQ once we've teleported out of this swamp."

FYI: to newcomers. Warren's Fist is another scouting Fist that came to bring Michael. They went scouting one way and we went the other.

With that, Nikolai leads the Fist to the original teleporting blood root tree that will get them out of the swamp. He sends Tinker and Michael in front as scouts, he takes up the rear, the rest in the middle carrying the tied and gagged gnoll leader.

Those few who scout ahead find an unexpected sight, just about as weird as anything else in this swamp.

The tent is not empty, nor are it's occupants human. A gnoll female lays on her side, tongue lolling in exhaustion as she pants. She sees she has visitors and closes her eyes, grunting as she lays back and exposes her neck.

At her belly, three small pups suckle viciously. They are small still, and do not seem to notice the strangers in their tent.

The female is in bad condition. She had a number of bite wounds and swollen bruises, likely from the attentions of the males in whatever den she served. These are the first pups you have seen, and the first female not serving the whims of the males of her species.

Tinker grips his Urgosh, payback for being nearly killed by gnolls in Hornfowl and then actually killed in this swamp... And stays his hand. " I don't kill babies, or new mothers", he grumbles. "That's not right."

He pulls out a potion of cure light wounds and takes a sip to show the gnoll mother it is not poison, then tosses it in the tent near the exhausted female.

Once done, he keeps quiet and trudges back to the group, (incidentally taking extra time just in case the female wants to slip away) being very careful to be quiet, and reports. "New mother gnoll and three pups, and out and away from the dens. Almost looks like she was exiled. "

He rubs his nose, and glances at Nikolai. " we can leave her here or capture her and take her with us. May have good info on how the gnolls are organized. "

We should definitely take her with us for questioning at the Citadel. If she is here then more is going on in the swamp than we previously have discovered. She can probably tell them where the home den is too."

Nikolai lets the information settle in for a moment. "Well, capturing her wouldn't be the way I'd put it, at least if she doesn't protest too much. You are right that if we treat her well, and she has a beef against this shaman of theirs that has brought this upon her, her information would be more reliable than his, pointing at the gnoll pack leader.

"I'm curious, though. I thought they didn't bring the females and children to this swamp...William, take Pru with you and see if you can convince her to come with us. Tell her we will help take care of her pups, heal her, and make sure she and her pups have food and water. Tell her that if we leave her here alone, she and her little ones will die. Pru, put on your best looking female charm you can to help, ok?"

Nikolai certainly doesn't want to force them to come and will leave them there if he has to. If she shies away, maybe someone has a Sleep spell handy. Once she is out of the swamp and sees they don't intend to kill her, he hopes she becomes more co-operative.

you know, this begs a question ive had for a while now. The place I came from, the person I was raised to be, says we should kill them, but a louder voice within me screams that it is wrong and we should let them live. That voice, that feeling like if I do that, I'll kill a part of myself, I believed it was weakness. But Stormbringer feels it too, and he is the furthest thing from "weak" ive ever seen. So if that feeling isn't weakness, what is it?

Questions are made and suggestions postured, but in the end the order of Nikolai is just that, an order.

It doesn't take much to realize the female is in no position to argue even if she wanted to. The potion Braugh threw at her still lays where it landed.

Helping her up and out is no real challenge, nor is corralling the whining pups. They eagerly stretch for their mother (And her four teats, I imagine. I don't like the idea of a gnoll with boobs, so I imagine them to be physically similar to a male with teats on the abdominal area) and squirm until they see the male captive, who glares fire and ember at the female.

While studying the female gnolls anatomy in a totally not creepy way, Michael notices that only one of the pups shows any similarity in the reddish color and markings to the mother. The other two are dull brown and grey, respectively. Further, the pups each seem to be different in age.

Having been cajoled into taking the potion, the mother is still weary, but seems ready to walk.

You may be correct that she may know little or nothing more than him, but there's more here than just verbal info. There is cultural information too. We know very little of the culture of the gnolls of the swamp. So even if she doesn't tell us much in military terms, she'll be telling us much of how their society works."

Nikolai has to stifle some chuckles during Buragh's speech and wonders if he ever did see a ballerina that didn't wear a tutu. Then he shakes his head to clear the vision of Bruagh wearing one...

Nikolai nods as Michael voices the deep moral dilema they face. "There's no guarantee, but there's no chance if we don't try. The opportunity to learn their true nature without the peer pressure from their tribe is too great to pass up."

Nikolai likes Pru's idea and smiles at Michael's contraptions. "This is teamwork at it's best", he casually says to no one in particular. "Keep them separated as Tinker suggests. Let's get moving again."

The trip to the Blood-root Cypress is uneventful.

The swamp seems relieved to see the mercenaries leave, just as they are to leave it. Tinker and Nikolai catch fleeting glimpses of small, green moss-covered men who follow them through the swamp. From time to time, one of these creatures flags the others and they disappear from view, only to pop back up later down the trail after some creature or another released a surprised death cry.

When you arrive, and you do so safely, the figures vanish from sight.

The Gnoll looks nervously at the plant, pondering if perhaps you plan to use him how his kind have used their slaves in the past.

"There are no safe dens in these swamps. There are no safe dens in the north. There you might be chewed by the males. Here you might be swallowed by the swamp lights, stabbed by the green men, killed by the swamp, or beaten by the males. I left with my pup and the pups of others who would not leave. With the puppies situated, a brief argument ends with Braugh shoving his way forward and feeding the plant. The surly dwarf braces for the life draining effects of the plant, but surprisingly feels no pain.

When he regains his footing, he finds his feet placed firmly on the rock-solid ground of The Scab, and recognizes the old festival grounds where he and his fellows fought off a pack of Wyverns. He feels a hand on his hip and looks down but sees no-one. He does hear the familiar voice of a very old imp in his ears.

"Not you dwarf. You done good by the Fist, but you should have never left home. There's some big things happening in the Scab, and a girl named Tahni is going to need your help. Your fate lies here instead."

The voice fades, leaving Braugh alone with his thoughts.

-----------

The rest of the Fist touch ground in the same place they left, but other than the general location, not much is the same.

The assassin vines have been cleared away. A small circle of 12 tents has been erected, and the beginnings of a wooden wall are in place. There are at least 3 full squads of the Fist on duty, and a stable where the horses they left behind are currently resting. The Cypress itself and its surrounding vegetation are unmolested.

Nearby, a trio of men are arguing and red-faced, but violence seems unlikely. Two are rather portly, and they appear to be scholars rather than warriors. The third is a familiar face, as he is one of the personnel clerks of The Fist.

One of the men, wearing a curious purple robe with some strange insignia is shouting. "I tell you it's completely safe! Whats a little blood when we have pints of the stuff? Just grab one of your green soldiers and tell them to feed the damn thing!"

The bursar seems hesitant, as do the few recruits gathered around the conversation.

The other man, dressed in black, presses on.

"How the hells will we know how it works or catalog the damned thing if you won't help us research it?"

The place surely is unexpected and, even knowing that the blood thing triggered some kind of teleportation, the arrival was a complete surprise.

Oh gods! It took him! The damned tree took him!

When Bruagh doesn't show up with the party, Michael gets upset.

William sees the crowd of people, and is concerned too that their friend didn't come with them....

At the sight of the scholars, he goes over and tries to find their leader, offering to share what he and the rest of the Fist discovered about using this tree. However, in return he asks to copy a spell or two from their spellbook, if there are any mages in the group...

(DM - Any results from my identification of the pipes? Also, note my request to the mages/wizards in the group gathered around the tree - I offered to share information in exchange for the chance to copy a 3rd level spell from their books... Preferably an evocation or conjuration spell that I don't have yet...)

Nikolai is doubly surprised when he comes out of the teleportation. Then tents catch him off-guard but mostly the fact that Bruagh was not with them. Michael's exclamation brings him back and quick thinking helps dissolve some worries.
"Michael! It doesn't work that way! The tree didn't 'take' him. We already know what happens when someone dies due to the tree. Bruagh would still be with us, dead or alive. Something else happened. I had my hand on him when we teleported but something wrenched him away."

Zieluvit asks 'Where are we? Can these people be trusted?' and Nikolai responds.
"Well, we are out of the swamp and a few days ride from the Citadel. This is the spot the gnolls were using to send raids to our towns. I'm glad to see that it is being well watched, however it is disturbing as well. I'd have preferred to have the trees destroyed rather than exploited. We only did what we did out of dire necessity. As far as trusting these go, no, I don't."

Nikolai then makes sure the gnoll leader is still well contained, then checks with William on how the female and her pups fared through the teleport.

He then takes up along side Tinker and makes a stand, "NO one is going to use this Blood Cypress for ANYTHING until I talk to the Captain! I'm going to report our return and inform her what's going on here. So stay away from that tree until I get back!"

Intimidate +4 = 18

At that he gathers the Fist and gnolls and follows Pru, looking for a more private place to use the Message scroll and contact the Captain.
