The IA, finding themselves in a bind as to how to resolve the confrontation due to the sleet storm, decide to try to get their attackers to surrender. Good Guys are just that way.
Sesha pauses a moment and casts Reduce Person on herself.
Katinka yells out "Lay down you weapons and put your hands up. Surrender and you will not be harmed. Keep this up and we cannot guarantee all will survive" to try to stop the fight.
Restlin wonders out loud how they are to know if their attackers are surrendering when they can't be seen. He waits to see what happens next.

Now with the sleet storm gone the IA can see the battle field again.
Restlin is happy the black tentacles did so much damage to the enemy. anxious to get this battle over, he helps his friends by casting Haste on those nearest him.
Black Tentacles: 6 rounds (CMB: 16)
Garret can now see the big burly warrrior clearly. He is wearing chain mail and has been swinging a huge greataxe. His broad frame dwarfs the halfling (no pun intended). His blood red eyes and shaggy beard create a scary image.
The Halfling monk swirls into a flurry of hairy feet and hands. The man's furry leaves him open and somehow they all hit and somehow the brute still stands.
Katinka sends an acid dart at one of the few diggers still standing, the acid burning into his armor and flesh.
Bosk hates it when they give people a chance to surrender and they just ignore it and keep on fighting. Inspired by Garret's display, Bosk tries one of his own. It will go down in history as the Minotaur that Swatted Flies. But it's not all bad, an an armor spike, second swing with his sword, and his newly hasted attack strike home. And it is enough to send him to Gargul.
Kyan, bow already ready, lets loose into the confused digger who just took an acid dart. The first shot, containing two arrows is enough to finish him off. Kyan then turns his attention do the big burly fellow pestering Garret. It takes all the rest of his arrows but the last arrow finally brings him down.
DM TO Shesha: you already cast the dispell magic this round. Keep your post and re-post it next round.
Beri directs his two new Ice Elementals to attack Dg3 who managed to escape the tentacles and was looking for a way around them. They flank him and attack.
DM JT: you forgot you brought in two LARGE elementals, and 14L and 14M are squares part of the stone wall of the building they were working in.
The First elemental hits. Cold Fort Save DC17 = 21
The Second misses by a long shot.
The Steam Mephit looks for targets and only finds one. He Flies over to the man still caught in the tentacles. (Two Move Actions).
The Black Tentacles loose much of their punch this time and DG1 manages to wiggle out of them. He moves behind a tent. The Steam Mephit gets an AoO = 6!
DG1 casts a spell and a wall of fire erupts surrounding the Ice Elementals.

The fight seems to be winding down but there is still one with fight in him.
Restlin decides to remove the Black Tentacles, a most effective spell, so that they can maneuver easier and try to catch the remaining enemy.
Garret calls out to his friends that the one under his feet was still alive a moment ago. Perhaps they could revive him and talk to him.
Sesha wants to put an end to the fight but in a different way by casting Charm Person. Charm Person: DC 19
DM JT: presumably Sesha has now moved within range, ie. 55ft.
Katinka flies north to get a better view and positions herself above the south eastern corner of the stone building. She has designs to file criminal charges against any survivors, and probably the dead too, in her belief they've committed crimes.
Bosk waits to see if Sesha's spell has any effect. If it doesn't, he'll try to grapple the man.
Kyan follows in line with the others, trying to give them a chance to surrender, his bow ready in case they don't.
Beri also remains to the side, but his Ice Elementals are pretty angry at being hemmed in a wall of fire and take it out on the last remaining digger.
DM JT: Your original post mentioned Ice Elementals, not Air. Also, Dg3 was not the caster, DG1 was the caster, although Beri would not have seen DG1 as he's now behind a tent.
The Ice elementals finish off the digger guard with ease and then step out of the wall of flames, suffering the effects of doing so, but at least they are now on the outside. The digger catches fire and burning flesh smell permeates the area.
The Steam Mefit flies (red blob) forward, remaining out of reach of DG1 and attacks the spell caster with a cone of steam 15' long. Ref DC13 for half and not sickened.
The Ice Elementals take 19 pts fire damage crossing the wall of fire.
DG1 attempts to fend off the Charm Person: Charm Person: DC 19 = 19
DG1 shrugs off the Sesha's charms, she must not be his type. Then tries to dodge the cone of steam: Ref DC13 = 12 and gets sickened for 3 rounds.
Suffering a -2 on attack, damage, saves, skill checks and ability checks, he does not surrender and Kyan puts an arrow in him. That pretty much does it as Bosk comes around to grapple a dead foe.
Still, if such creatures were determined to waste their lives, she saw no reason to aid them in keeping them.

Pretty much all that is left is the burning Wall of Fire and a bunch of dead bodies. At least two IA members, Sesha and Bosk, have spell abilities that give them insight on anyone who is unconscious and dying but who's spirit has not left the Wold yet.
Unfortunately the IA are very good at giving out wounds with their weapons. All members of the digging party are verified to be truly dead, not just barely dead, or almost dead, or somewhat dead, but dead dead.
Beri sets about thanking his summoned friends for their help and dismisses them while Restlin starts to search the tents. He is in the process of searching the first one when Katinka, from her high lookout spot, spots others coming. They seemed to have just materialized out of the sand dunes northeast of the building.
These people seem different. Their clothes blend almost too well with the surrounding sands and they move with ease over the desert terrain. It is hard to tell what race they are since most skin is covered by camouflaged cloth, only a slit for eyes to see and nose to breathe.
They approach to within 100 feet and then all stop but one. This one approaches to within 50 feet then stops also. This one removes the wrappings from his face then calls out to the IA in much the same old Common which the attackers used, but with a different accent.
"Hail strangers! We witnessed the battle and know you are not at fault. These Gaeli were determined to keep you away from here at all costs. We have been watching them for the past week as they worked at cleaning the sand out from our building. We were waiting to see why they were here, but now that is irrelevant.
I am Captain Alrik. These are my men (pointing to the dozen others waiting behind him).
It is clear you are not from here. We may be of assistance, as the desert is not a hospitable place to strangers of its ways."
If allowed, Captain Alrik will approach further with his men.
"Since you are the victors over the Gaeli's, you may take what you want from their remains. But we must inspect our monument and see why they chose to come here, so far from the rest of their group."
If not hindered, Captain Alrik sends several of his men into the square stone building.
"They are searching for something but I'm at at a loss for what. This building was erected centuries ago to commemorate a victorious battle over the oppression of the Gaeli. We..."
A shout is heard from the monument building and one of the desert soldiers comes running up to the captain.
"Sir! They've found something! A secret passage! There is a sand chocked stair in the middle of the room leading down!"
'WHAT? A secret stairway down? Who...? What...? What could possibly down there?" the captain exclaims.
One of the desert warriors whispers into the captain's ear and the captain nods.
Captain Alrik turns to the IA spokesman and proposes, "You are certainly very powerful warriors. It was suggested to me that since we are poorly equipped to venture down into the memorial building, that perhaps you would do us the favor in scouting it out for us? I will send one of my men as liaison. well versed in our history, that can be of help to decipher what may be down there."
He motions for a warrior to come forward and introduces him as Trellus.
DM JT OOC: sorry for the little plot jump here but we want to introduce a new player and get him started this week. So excuse any sloppy plot wagon but it is for a good cause. :} Everyone give Michael Knotts a good welcome. He will introduce himself and In Character, at some point, give his history and how he ended up in the desert and with these people. For now, though, he is attached to these desert nomads and has been assigned to the IA as a liaison of the desert nomad leader. These plot things will be explained as they develop. So play your PCs accordingly, and if suspicious, it is understandable. At least these people are far more friendly. :)

But I forget myself, Katinka Hushfoot, Justicar of Pantheon, sir, at your service" Tink gives a bow and a smile to the man. She's still got some adrenaline rushing through her veins from the combat, but is trying to calm down. At least this group had the right of mind to introduce themselves and open a dialogue rather than just attack.

Sesha, standing near Restlin, is swept up and along in the flurry of events. Noting the raw numbers of the new group, Sesha decides to follow Tink's lead, which seems to be that of optimism.
She starts to flash a smile at Trellus, then remembers that it will do little good.
Her drow heritage is obvious, dark blue skin and white hair give her ancestry away almost immediately. She wears a number of furs and cloths, though the glint of mithril can be seen underneath.
She wears a tiny cauldron on her belt, and is currently wielding a broom as if it were a staff. She has one of those too, a staff, which rests neatly in a leather holder on her back.
Her face though, seems to be a bit of a mess. She wears a black eyepatch, and a silk scarf covers her face from eyes to neck.
"Hi Trellus. I'm Sesha. The last voice of Serenbeth, ambassador of It'lal, and a the person you need to find if you suddenly start bleeding from lots of holes. Before we hold hands and skip off into the dark depths together, mind telling me what we should expect from you down there?"

"Charming as always, sweetheart." Restlin quips with a grin before offering his hands to just about everybody. "Really, it's so great to see friendly faces around here. We arrived yesterday and have only found sand and these lunkheads since."
Restlin is pretty young to be out in this desert. A good estimate would put him between 17-19. He has long, fine black hair he keeps swept in a pony-tail. His eyes are bright and he has a constant smile, but if we're being honest, he looks kinda wimpy.
"I'm Restlin, by the way. Restlin the Mage-Priest. Terrible priest, I must admit. I worship Wardd, a god of luck from the northern continent. He mostly just puts up with me, I think. Luckily, I'm not bad with good ol' fashioned arcane magics.
"I'm sure we'll all be more than happy to scout this place out. We came here to investigate anyway. Before that, though, if you could tell me about this battle and these Gaeli, I'd be very appreciative. I have a hunch we know them by a different name where we're from."

DM JT: oops. sorry. Ok, he's alive if Sesha doesn't use her Slay thing. :)
Trellus Thursday December 18th, 2014 5:45:33 PM
The man introduced as Trellus gives a start of recognition as the group members introduce themselves.
"You dudes are from the Northern Continent?!?" he exclaims excitedly. "That is totally waxed! I'm from the Southern Continent...the old Sargass Plains, actually."
His face falls a bit at that, and he does his best to hide the memory by working at peeling off his camoflage head and body coverings, "Won't need this underground", revealing in the process a tanned human in his mid-twenties of average height and muscular build. He wears silvery chainmail under a surcoat of dark red, which is festooned with images of shields and hammers. His own silver shield is etched with an upright hammer. He also wears a shield shaped bone earring, which again is etched with an upright hammer. On his finger is a silver ring with a blood red stone (no hammer there). The man's blond hair is worn close at the side and flat on top. In addition to a backpack and typical gear, he wears a mace at his side, and a crossbow dangles from his pack.
After shedding his camo, the blond man nods to each of you (or shakes hands, as the case may be). "Many shadows, he greets you formally. "I'm Trellus of Oddholme, priest of Domi."
He chuckles at Sesha's request, not at all put off by her appearance. "Well, usually I'm the dude people find when they suddenly start bleeding from lots of holes," he responds lightly. "I also offer the protection, strength, and divine magics granted to me by my patron, Domi. With my old pack, it was cast protection picks, cast a couple offensive picks, cast healing picks, and if the pattern really got warped," he pats his mace, " I actually pulled out this thing."
He give Restlin a wink. "You remind me of a gnome I once knew. Anyway, I've been with the Yngvardians" - he indicates the group around him - "for about a year. The short version of the battle is several hundred years ago, they overthrew these Gaeli oppressors and sent them scurrying off to wherever the whitefaced treadles came from. Captain Alrik interrupts and explains, "We are the Yngvardians. This desert is our home. Centuries ago this was a vast green plain and many tribes shared it. The Gaeli, who live in the mountains to the north (he points north), came and conquered the tribes. But we eventually overthrew them, but their king, upon dying, cursed the land and this is the result.
This spot is where our ancestors defeated the Gaeli's second in command. They built this monument to commemorate the victory. However, up until now, we were unaware of any reason why the Gaeli would want to search this monument. Their main group is over at the city trying to get in.
We put up with their presence only so that we could watch them to see what they were up to. But now we know that they were looking for something we were not aware of. Perhaps we can find something in their leader's tent that will give us a clue to what lies below, for our stories say nothing of this discovery."
He sends one of the desert warriors into the larger tent.
Meanwhile, Captain Alrik asks, "Teucari? Never heard of that name. The Gaeli have lived in the mountains north of here for as long as we have lived here ourselves. Have they been elsewhere that they would be called something else?'

A visitor's welcome to remember part 2(Co-DM JonathanT) Sunday December 21st, 2014 1:55:23 AM Restlin shrugs. He realy meant Teucri but it somehow came out Teucari. The battle in the dry desert must have dried out his vocal cords and warped the words. Either way, he goes on to explain that the Teucri are a legend where they come from, Hook City. He asks, These Gaeli, are they an advanced people? Could they be the same?"
Katinka asks permission to look over the Gaeli diggers for clues as to what they were doing and why they attacked so readily. Then inspects the tents.
Garret is shrugs at the discussions. All this history and stuff is boring to him. He wants to start down the stairs, a good alternative than to wander the desert.
Trellus introduces himself and clears up any confusion about his why his accent and looks are different than the other men of his unit. He explains that he is not from the desert but a refuge who, with many others, ended up here by accident and, with no where else to go, stayed. He mentions having been to Hook City also and looks forward to going back.
He points out that the why is probably downstairs.
Bosk greets the Yngvardian liaison to the Iron Adventurers, Trellus, and introduces himself.
Sesha has no mercy on the Gaeli diggers and finishes off the last one with her witch Slay ability. (DM JT: this is done at the battle sight where the tents obscure vision to where the Yngvardians met the IA. The digger only had 3HD. Sorry.)
Joining the rest of the group on the other side of the tents, she voices she is ready to go explore the stairwell as well.
Reslin informs Trellus that they may have found a way to get back to Hook City and would be happy to take him back with them when they are done with what they came to do. Taking Shesha's arm, he is ready to go downstairs also.
Kyan is a Southern to the core and gods of the Northern Continent seem silly to him. He is more interested in who's been coming and going around the area and starts looking around.
So, there seems to be a division of what to do next. Katinka has started gathering up the Gaeli equipment and Kyan is looking around for what tracks lead to and away from the sight. The rest of the IA are curious enough about the stairway down in the middle of the memorial building to head down right away.
Meanwhile the Yngvardians are searching the main tent, the one they claim belonged to the leaders. "The priest was certainly the leader of this expedition but the big barbarian was almost just as much in charge, from our observations. Knowing why they even thought to look for a secret passage here is important and certainly worth knowing before anyone goes down. Our history does not mention anything of a hidden passage, which is odd. I'll have to bring this up to the Pasha." the Captain comments. "As to why they attacked so readily, they are fanatics. They belong to a cult. Their main group is back a the closed city. They don't bargain nor ask questions. They were on a mission and tolerated no interruptions."
The total search time, including gathering the Gaeli party's equipment and going through the tents will take 30 minutes. In the process Katinka sees many magical items on the dead bodies, from armor and weapons to amulets and scrolls. She sets them all aside from the mundane equipment. (DM JT: List coming tomorrow)
In the main tent a document is found. More like a very old manuscript and not even written in Common, but in Infernal. If you know Infernal: Highlight to display spoiler: {"Great power was hidden away where they celebrate their victory"}

"'Great power was hidden away where they celebrate their victory'" the halfling looks up to the others "Based on what we have recently been told about the Gaeli and Yngardians, it may be relevant to their long ago battle"
She is curious to learn a little more about these Yngvardians. It wouldn't be the first time a supposed "good side" turned out to be the "bad side". Honestly, one of these days she's going to prepare a Detect Evil spell. "Pardon my asking, Captain sir. Pasha is not a term I am familiar with. Would you mind explaining what it is?"
She is equally curious about Trellus "No doubt a cleric such as yourself has been busy here. But a refugee? For a year? Might I ask what drove you here?"
Before heading down the stairs, Sesha takes a moment to refresh her Reduce Person spell. Now eye to eye with Tink and Garret, she grins up at Restlin.

Restin's offer merits a "We'll see".
And then Katinka asks her question, and the cleric's mood sobers. He spends several moments staring at the ground before lowering himself to a sitting position, elbows on knees in front of him. Trellus stares off into nothing, pouring sand from one hand to another as he tells his tale.
"I was in the lower level, the temple...we heard a roar, an explosion, I looked up and saw a rush a fire blast through the corridor outside the temple area. People ... evaporated... in the heat and flame. Then screams...people, animals, and...creatures. Creatures from your nightmares..demons with wings and teeth...eating...everyone.
We fought back, threw up barriers, blades and rock and cold...ice..ice worked. We were holding them off, we were winning...
The ground started shaking. The dome shook like a rattle, Cracks crept up the side..and it fell. Rock and metal crashing down....Brother Falmar was crushed instantly.
The sky was open...and now we could see..we could hear..everything. The 'Pack was at the docks, fighting. You could see the spells from across the town....Tishe's reeds were cut there..I felt her go.
Rapke and Bounders raced into the open city, met by manfri. Manfri! Manfri rose from the Grass, holding them back. But it still wasn't enough. The sky was red. Dark Red. And Sargass was floating, far above.. Still just a baby. Demons and elementals ripped into Him, but He just grew, brighter, and older and bigger..a toddler..a child.
Then Woldsblood ....falling on us like rain. Slicing through anyone it hit...forming in pools that pulled at your very soul. Brother Arend left that way. Just walked into the pool...
The people...they huddled behind me, under the rock, crying, begging, calling for help, as streams of Woldsblood flowed toward us, and the creatures attacked, and the rapke screamed, and the docks burned...and I had ... nothing left. The spells were gone, the wands used up. I had nothing but mace and shield.
And we heard the voice. A boy. A god. Sargass. He looked at us.. Floating there, above the city. Ignored the attacking entities, looked down at us, and smiled! Smiled! He said 'II send you out into the Wold. Tell the tale. Remember us who perish here. Make a new home where I send you. Live life! Farewell!'
A portal appeared in the wall behind us. The people ran through. Until I was the only one. The only one left alive in Oddholme. And I stepped into the portal as Woldsblood covered the city.
We found ourselves here, and the Yngvardians found us, and helped us.
Later, I tried to go back. I had divinations and my Word of Recall to go back to the sanctuary I had built. But, it didn't work. It isn't there. Oddholme is gone. Rattledam is gone. Light, the whole of the Sargass Plains is gone. My pack is scattered, reeds cut or gone walker, I don't know. But, I can't feel them any longer."
The man finally raises his head, tear tracks drying on his face, and looks at Katinka. "So, yeah, we've stayed here. Once you've lost everything, one piece of ground is as good as another."
He climbs to his feet, wipes his faces, takes a deep breath, and exhales slowly. "So, who wants to go exploring?"

afterwards he will go take a cursory look at the steps to have a looksie and find any traps. (perception 33)

Beriothian -- AC:23/16/21 HP: 98/130 CMD = 19 Monday December 22nd, 2014 11:56:30 AM
Brei waits a while as the others make their introductions, wanting to make sure that they aren't about to receive a second ambush. As the conversations go on he becomes more confident that they are truly about to have a few moments peace, so he reverts back into his human form.
Soon the party sees a tall man in druid vestments standing before them. His long brown hair falls down either side of his face, his beard surprisingly free of sand due do having been in another form all morning. In his hand is a plain wooden staff void of any decorations but polished to enhance the natural curves and lines of the ancient wood.
He walks over and greats his new friend. Peace and well met. I am Beriothian, forgive me for not introducing myself earlier but I can not talk in common while in that form. I am a druid from the Northern Continent, up by the legendary Hook City and... wow, it's a lot hotter out here when you actually have a body... anyway, it's good to meet you my friend.
Sesha, now fun sized, stops and stares at Trellus, trying to take in exactly what he just said. It wasn't that she was the most compassionate individual, though she was trying .. and thanks to Serenbeth succeeding.
"Trellus, can I ask you a question? Two things you said got my attention.. first you said it was raining Woldsblood. Were there many active Bloodwitches in Sargrass?"
Sesha had an idea of the amount of manipulation over the stuff Witches enjoyed, and thanks to her teacher, had heard stories of what the greatest Witches could do. But her teacher, the Drow, and Sesha herself doubted any were alive that were that powerful.
"And .. well.. you said..I guess I don't understand. Was Sargrass destroyed? The death of an Immortal Power is tremendous news."

Garret takes a seat at the top of the stairs with his feet hanging down into the opening in the ground as he listens to the story of the newcomer. When he is done, Garret says, "Hi. I'm Garret. Garret Goodbarrel. I cannot imagine going through something like that."
Trellus (AC27/13t/25f, HP 128/128, CMD 22)(MgcVstmtx2, EndrElmnts) Monday December 22nd, 2014 10:10:49 PM
Trellus silently nods a greeting to Beriothian and Garret.
In answer to Kyan, he says, "A few months after the Migration." The man seems about to add more, but after a couple of moments, turns to Sesha instead.
"Not that I knew of, no. But, Rattledam was sitting on an underground lake of it, and I'm not sure how big that lake was.
"And I don't think Sargrass got his reeds cut. Not the Power anyway. He'd just been born after all. I don't think a Power can be destroyed, truly. I've been weaving some tales of the Yngvardians with some things the manfri told us, and I get the feeling the Powers weave in some kind of gigantic cycle, waxing and waning like the moon. And right now, them weavers are totally waxing."

ooc: travelling as well, and jet lagged.
Bosk nods as Trellus tells of the Sargrass. It may have been a hassle to travel through, but it was as if you entered another world when you traveled there. The ships floating on the grass and the strange creatures. These memories are why I prize my steelgrass armour so much. I also have some wine and liquer made from the "juice" of steelgrass. Perhaps we can have some later, though I must confess that I ration it. It may be last last of its kind in the Wold.
Turning to Sesha he adds, There were MANY witches when we last travelled there. You know I have no love for witches and their abuse of wold's blood and those witches exemplified why. They were sacrificing people and manfri in their spells and attempting to destroy the Sargrass. Some evil shadow fled their cauldron when we stopped them. I would be proud to boast of our victory if they had not involved so many children. We did manage to save one and bring her back to Hook City... The clerics voice fades as he pictures the unfortunate children that had been tied up in the terrible act.

Continuity in the Wold correctly has the destruction of the Sargrass a few months after the Great Migration. Please adjust Kyan's memories accordingly. The DM of Hook City at that time was not complying with the approved continuity.

DM JT: some loot keeping first
It takes a little time but eventually all the Gaeli digger party's equipment is piled, magical to one side and non magical to another.
The standard Foot Soldier wore half plate armor and carried heavy steel shields. Their weapons were MW longswords, longbows, and MW arrows: They also had two potion bottles each (listed in the magical pile). 8 Half Plate, 8 MW longswrds, 8 longbows, and 160 MW arrows, and 10160 gp.
Two lieutenants, one male and one female, wore breastplate and carried light steel shields, battleaxes, lonbows, and MW arrows. Some potions and other stuff too (listed in the magical pile): 2 longbows, 40 MW arrows, 2 Tanglefoot bags, 1510gp.
Big burly leader wore chain armor and used a greateaxe, longbow, MW arrows, and stuff (listed in the magical pile): 1 longbow, 20 MW arrows, 1585gp and 2 gems Value Appraise DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: { 500gp each}
The cleric a mithril shirt and used a morningstar and other stuff (listed in the magical treasure pile): 1425gp

Before going into the building, Tink places the equipment into two piles: magic and no magic.
"Hmm.. the gems look to be worth some 500gp each" she advises (Appraise check vs DC20: 27)
As for the magical items, there are quite a few. Surprisingly so for what looked like a bare basic digging party. Tink looks over the items one by one to see if they would be of use to the group (Spellcraft 21 + Take 10 = 31. DC to ID an item = 15+CL. With a 31, Tink should be able to ID any of the items with a CL of 16 or less)

But wait a minute, you're talking like we're not going to ever come back out of this hole in the ground here. I would think we will just walk down there, explore a bit, clear out some spider webs and then come back up here to pick up our stuff. Do you guys know something that I don't know?"
Fun with loot. :) (Co-DM JonathanT) Thursday December 25th, 2014 1:44:54 PM
The IA take a little time to organize themselves and sort the loot into two piles, magical and non-magical, then take the time necessary to identify the magical loot. Meanwhile, they also get to know their liaison to the Yngvardian people, Trellus, and a little about the Yngvardians.
Katinka ponders the ancient writing 'Great power was hidden away where they celebrate their victory' and concludes that it must refer to the battle at that location long ago.
She is curious to learn a little more about the Yngvardians and is quite aware that the winners write the History, and it could be the Yngvardians are the bad guys here. She makes a point to remember someday to prepare a Detect Evil spell. "Pardon my asking, Captain sir. Pasha is not a term I am familiar with. Would you mind explaining what it is?"
Captain Alrik shrugs, "He is our leader. Our 'King' as Trellus would say. We once were tribal nomads, each tribe with his Sultan..."
"Warchief." Trellus interjects.
"...but since the defeat of the Gaeli, we became one people and the Sultan that lead our armies to victory became our Pasha."
Sesha refreshes her Reduce Person spell and offers the same to Restlin. He accepts but requests to wait until after all the loot is gathered and just before they go down the sand chocked stairwell.
In answering to the IA's curiosity, Trellus tells a little bit of his tragic story. All he needs is a violin quartet playing in the background to have everyone in tears. (Where's a bard when you need one?)
Katinka pats Trellus in confort, then activates her Ring of Invisibility, which makes her gathering up of loot look very spooky as the invisible halfling removes gear and starts the two piles. Armor, weapons, potion bottles floating in mid air...
Kyan takes a look see at he stairwell. The stone building is 60'x60'. Four pillars inside form the corners of a 40'x40' square and hold up the stone domed ceiling. Mosaic pictures adorn the walls and although some have been defaced, they clearly are representations of battle scenes. The focus of the scenes is a man in brilliant armor leading an army against a rugged, bearded people and defeating them. The man in brilliant armor is shown striking down a giant. Knowledge (Nature) DC20 - Dwarves have automatic success: Highlight to display spoiler: {The giant is of the Fire Giant subtype.}
In the middle of the room a 10' hole in the floor reveals a sand chocked spiral stairway down. A light shown down only reveals the first 10'. Inspection of this area reveals no traps.
Beriothian waits a few moments and decides combat is over before returning to his normal human form, then introduces himself.
Garret also introduces himself.
Sesha questions Trellus on Sargrass and he explains a little further.
Bosk relates his gruesome experience in the Sargrass.
Restlin is ready to move on, but objects keep floating around and ending up in one of two piles.
So the best of an hour is spend going over the loot. The Yngvardians help by going through all the tents. Other than what was already found, the equipment is mundane stuff, very helpful to the Yngvardians but not much use for the IA.
With all the magic experts in the IA, they make quick work at identifying the magical items:
Mithral Shirt +1, Chain +2, Breastplate +1 x2, light steel shield +1 x2, Greateaxe +1, Morningstar +1, Battleaxe +1 x2, Boots of the Desert*, Ring of Feather Falling, Ring of Sustenance, Amulet of Natural Armor +1, Brooch of Shielding (slightly used 12pts), Feather Token - Bird
Scroll case with three scrolls: Cure Moderate Wounds (2d8+3), Prayer (base level), Blessing of Fervor (base level)
23 potion bottles: Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds (2d8+3) x12 Potion of Bull's Strength x10 Elixir of Vision
*Boots of the Desert: same as Boots of Winterlands but for sand and heat instead of snow and cold.
At first it appeared as if some IA members wanted to load up all the stuff and take it with them down into the depths of who-knows-what, but other IA members suggest leaving the loot behind, unless there was some fear that they'd not make it back out again.
Once that decision is made, the IA and their new liaison are rested and ready to head down the 10' wide spiral stairs. Once any pre-expedition preparations are done, they head down. The first 20' go fine but then they hit sand. This was as far as the Gaeli digging party got before their unexpected death.
RobC - Katinka Hushfoot AC 20/16/15 -- CMD 20 -- HP 110/109 -- Perm Arcane Sight, Darkvision, See Invisibility d20+27=29 ; Thursday December 25th, 2014 10:52:43 PM
Tink offers the use of her haversack to transport some of the goods. She can fit an extra 35lbs inside it. It's not a lot, but every bit may help.
"These guys sure came prepared. Can I suggest we split up the Cure Moderate Wounds potions? There's 12 here, so perhaps 1 each? I'm not fussed who gets an extra one. Also, none of the magical equipment here is of use to me at this time"
-------------------
Unless told otherwise, Tink will take first position in the exploration down the stairs and will stop on reaching the sand "I still have a fairly full alotment of spells for the day. Perhaps I could summon a few earth elementals to see if anything of interest lays beyond this sand?"
She is curious if there are footsteps on the sand that may indicate what the Gaelies may have been doing down here (Perception: 29)

Trellus nods somberly in reply to Bosk's tale, and reaches up to clap him on the shoulder. Which is a lot higher than the man expected. He settles for a forearm instead. "Steelgrass Wine", he murmurs in wonder, and a bit of longing.
The group goes through their winnings, and Trellus remains in the background, not wanting to intrude. The preparations for entering the tunnel intrigue him a bit. "Why do you shrink dudes down?" he asks, before glancing up at Bosk, "and do you do it to everybody?"
The journey into the stairwell comes to a very quick halt. Lost in thought, the young cleric rubs the back of his neck with his right hand. "Could earth elementals clear the tunnel?" he asks. "Or maybe air elementals? Gilan used to turn into a whirlwind. Would that be able to suck out the sand?"
He grins,"Or, we all grab shovels." The man is not at all opposed to a bit of digging.

This looks like it might get interesting. Perhaps now is the time to set up some inter-party communication.
"I'm going to make it so that a few of us can communicate telepathically, however, it will only last 2hrs, and I'm afraid I can't include everyone in the link" comes the voice of the invisible halfling.
Tink casts Telepathic bond on herself, as well as Restlin, Sesha, Beri, and Trellus. Restlin and Sesha are capable mages, and as well as being able to coordinate spells, areas of effect and tactics together, they can also use their Message spells to relay information to others. Beri needs it so as to talk to those who can't speak Auran when he shape changes. And Trellus. If he is a cleric then being able to silently relay the status of the party to him may come in handy.
"There. Now, I can see 60ft in the dark. I am happy to continue on as point and work my way stealthily. If we are not concerned about something finding us, then I can always cast an Unseen Servant and have it carry a torch, say, 50ft or 60ft ahead of all of us? We'd have our hands free and if there were any traps or creatures down here, it would be the first target. Failing that, I can always order it to stand in the middle here and carry a torch or lantern"

"As long as you're casting spells," Trellus remarks as Katinka touches him to cast the Telepathic Bond, "stand right there a minute."
Trellus pulls a rod out of his Haversack, and still holding onto the invisible justicar, casts a spell. He also moves to include Garret, Bosk, and Beriothian.
"Its a Status spell," he explains. "It lets me know you dude's distance and direction from me, as well as the condition of your reeds."
Grinning at Restlin's compliment, the cleric nods in agreement with Katinka and Garret's suggestion of the invisible servant carrying a light out front. He hands Katinka (or holds it out in her direction) a standard lantern to use. Restlin appears to be carrying the bullseye lantern, and Trellus will keep out his everburning torch, too.

Recap: The Earth Elementals cleared the sand from the spiral stairwell and the IA continued down a little more. They found at the bottom a doorway that opened up onto a 10' long, 20' wide platform. Steps led down to a wide corridor with a flagstone floor. The corridor is 20' wide and 30' high. From the bottom of the steps to as far as the eye can see, the whole area radiates powerful magic. The walls, the floor, the ceiling, the statues.
The corridor has pairs of statues, backs against the walls and facing each other across the 20' span. It is dark.
Lanterns are brought down and lit, shedding light in a 15' radius, which is enough to light the corridor from wall to wall. Katinka casts Unseen Servant spell and orders it to carry a lantern down the corridor. As the Unseen Servant heads out, they IA without Darkvision get a view of the corridor as the lantern illuminates the way little by little (Move 15').
Katinka decides to follow a ways behind the bobbing lantern. The lantern floats past the first pair of statues and keeps on going. It passes the second pair of statues (40' down) and nothing. When the Unseen Servant reaches the 50' distance mark set by Katinka, she starts her own trip, trying to be very stealthy. Garret picks up right behind Katinka. The rest wait a little, letting the stealthy in the group get further ahead so as not to spoil the quiet surroundings with a bunch of rattling armor.
The Unseen Servant floats further along reaching and passing the third pair of statues. Katinka reaches the first pair...
A blast of super cold air explodes across the hallway from statue to statue catching Katinka in its icy cold breath. She orders the Unseen Servant not to progress any further ahead without her. Should it reach 60ft away from her it would disappear. "Approach me" she commands it. The servant should commence a slow walk but to Tink, coming 20ft closer to her.

Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, Under the War Memorial we go...(Co-DM JonathanT) Saturday January 3rd, 2015 11:49:14 AM "Pantheon's pantaloons!" echoes loudly throughout the corridor and up the stairwell as Katinka's moist breath freezes in mid-air and thin ice specks tinkle to the flagstone floor and she steps back 5'.
First thing Katinka does is call a halt to her Unseen Servant's forward progress and brings it back some. Next she starts assessing what she did wrong. Did she miss a pressure plate? Impossible, she was floating a few inches off the ground. So what was it? She looks suspiciously at the statues and immediately notices that they do not radiate magic, whereas they did before. Obvious conclusion is that the statues had something to do with it.
DM JT note: as I understand the Spellcraft check, it is done while the spell is being cast. Since there was no observable casting of the spell (ie. triggered release), Spellcraft skill does not apply. On the other hand...
Katinka pulls through her frost covered memories of the past few moments and realizes that her Arcane Sight subconsciously registered the power level of the magic involved in the icy blast as being Moderate (4th - 6th) power with a distinct Divine nature to it, as opposed to Arcane.
Meanwhile, some healing comes from the wand of the Yngvardian Liaison, Trellus.
DM JT Note: So now we've got Trellus, Katinka, and Garret on the 5' square section just before the 1st pair of statues.
The statues are rather plain for all that, representing generic warriors dressed in generic armor, weapons sheathed. Katinka checks for any trigger mechanism on the nearest statue and finds none, however she feels the statue 'hum' slightly.

Tink takes a moment to examine the situation.
"The servant was walking, exerting some 20 pounds of pressure on the floor, and it didn't get struck. I was flying a few inches off the floor and I was struck. A pressure plate or trip wire seems unlikely. If I had to guess, there is some magic here to detect life or certain auras. But then, with my Misdirection spell I should have appeared as a rock. That is to say, not alive, not magical, not good or evil. Had the trigger been heat the lantern would likely have triggered the blast. It is possible we are dealing with artifact level of power. We are trying to find or follow the Teucri of course"
She listens closely to the 'buzz' coming from the nearby statue. Is the sound constant, or does it sound like it is charging up for another blast?
"These statues are unusal, Kyan. There are magical auras all around us at the moment. The whole place is lit up. But these statues. I can hear a 'humming' noise"
Did Tink feel the icy blast come from any particular direction? That is to say, did it come from the left or right or all sides?

Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, Under the War Memorial we go...(Co-DM JonathanT) Sunday January 4th, 2015 4:33:58 PM
DM JT Note: not saying this is the case, but Katinka would know that the Misdirection spell does not work on such divination spells such as Detect Thoughts, Clairaudience/Clairvoyance and the like. At least if she didn't know that, she should study up on her spells. (DM grins). :)
Restlin does not recognize any Teucri workmanship on anything here. It could be a lack of Teucri knowledge in general or because the styles don't match what he actually does know from statues and art work from Hook City.
Katinka assesses what she knows of traps and triggers and the trigger mechanism of this trap is still somewhat of a mystery, but she has ideas. The cold blast shot from the right statue to the left and the right statue was the closest to her at the time and it is the one she is studying and giving off a slight 'hum'. It could potentially be recharging itself as some traps do. Only studying it for some time will determine this for sure. She theorizes that the magic involved is Artifact in power and if it is, Time is probably not on their side.

If it takes the trap - and I suspect traps, plural - a moment to reload the rest of the group might have time to make it to the other end.

Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, Under the War Memorial we go...(Co-DM JonathanT) Tuesday January 6th, 2015 11:57:07 PM
DM JT: post coming but first: Bosk asked 'How large are the statues? Are they bound to the ground, or could they be brought back to adorn the Iron Adventurer's tower?'
Ans: Sorry, my bad. I had pictured the statues as tall as the hall, thus the sheet of ice reaching from floor to ceiling, but I forgot to mention their height.
Also, to help clarify a misconception: Katinka said '...I could hear it buzzing and sounds like it has already recharged. Might want to hold off before you advance...'
The quiet humm is there, but her Arcane Sight does not register magic on the statues yet, so a correct assessment is that they've not recharged yet.
Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, Under the War Memorial we go...(Co-DM JonathanT) Wednesday January 7th, 2015 12:25:29 AM Bosk tries to see if there is any life in the statues but sees none. Meanwhile, the group seems to have come to a decision on summoning some more intelligent creatures that have a better chance of surviving the traps than less intelligent ones, a moral dilemma that questions the summoning of ANY creature for the specific purpose of setting off traps and to face possible death doing so. It is quite one thing to bring one to your aid when in combat, another altogether to use as non-combat trap bait.
But those moral dilemmas must wait another time, maybe not so far in the future, for the spells fizzle upon casting. Those with Arcane Sight see the magic of the spells hit the walls, crackle and fizz, then get absorbed by the walls.
Maybe it is a good thing the IA find this out sooner rather than later. But he IA are full of novel ideas and this is probably just a minor inconvenience.
DM JT to Sesha: sorry about that, I did like your post. Save it for next time. :}

Bosk follows the others through the first set of statues and then waits to see if anyone has any ideas for getting past the next set. If no one else has any ideas, let me go first. My armor provides some minor protection from electricity and I have a scroll of resist energy to help against fire...I will take a beating, but I am fast enough that it should not be too bad, especially if I heal between statues. It makes more sense for only one of us to face the spells that for everyone to get hit. As he says this he briefly worries about his tattoo, but then remembers that it cannot be hurt while on his body...the thought of sending it ahead of him to trigger the traps never enters his mind.
If there are no better plans Bosk will lead the way, triggering the statues and then healing himself. Cast Resist Fire - 10 points resistance +5 electrical resistance from steelgrass armor

Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, Under the War Memorial we go...(Co-DM JonathanT) 15d6=49 ; Thursday January 8th, 2015 12:05:36 AM Katinka decides to test the hypothesis that the magical trap has not reset yet and gracefully tumbles across the 5' plane between the two without incident.
Restlin follows right behind, seeing that nothing was triggered. "Hey Tink, does that fancy arcane sight of yours tell you anything about those other statues?" he asks then tests his dimmensional step ability. It seems to work as he vanishes from his spot and reappears 5' to his left.
Katinka answers Restlin by studying the next pair of statues and sees that they do radiate magic, as does the pair further down. They radiate magic similar to the first pair.
Kyan, less graceful than Katinka, charges past the statues shouting 'Leeeeroooy Jeeenkins!', and ancient obscure battle cry.
Sesha, in an act of abandon not seen in her, ever, follows Kyan shouting the same battle cry and catches Restlin's arm when he reappears.
Trellus is reminded of a temple sanctuary he built at Oddholme. "Forbiddance spell to block summoning or teleports, and glyphs to blast people that walked in. This is like a shadier version of that." he observes. Then he takes to the air and follows after Katinka, staying 10' behind her, telling her, telepathically, they must keep going else part of the group may get split up. To prepare what may come ahead, he casts a Aura of Protection spell affecting all within 30'. All within 30' gain +2 deflection bonus to AC and Resistance 5 for all energy types. Duration 12 rounds
Garret pauses, waiting to see if more traps are set off but none are.
Beri joins the crazy atmosphere Kyan brought on by charging through and shouting, and does the same, probably more to release nervous energy than for anything else.
Last goes Bosk and once past the two statues, waits to see if any ideas on how to get past the next set comes to light. He volunteers to take the brunt of whatever the trap, it indeed there is one, offers. To prepare for that, he casts Resist Fire - 10pts.
Thus the IA advance another 20' down the magical hallway and Bosk bravely crosses the plane between the second pair of statues.
With no big surprise this time, bolts of lighting blast across the hallway between the two statues. The flashes are blinding (as one would expect) and when the things settle down again a few seconds later...

Bosk braces himself for the attack he is sure will come, prepared to leap out of the way at the first sign of trouble. The pain is instantaneous and he feels the electricity coursing through his body before the first tell tales of static crackling ring through the air. It isn't until the current dissipates that he appreciates the protection offered by his armor. Woven of the steelgrass and capable of withstanding the electrical storms there some much of the electricity is absorbed or bounces right off, but this is no mere electrical storm and he soon finds his muscles seizing and his knees begin to buckle....

Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, Under the War Memorial we go...(Co-DM JonathanT) Friday January 9th, 2015 12:05:43 AM
Everyone cringes as Bosk lights up like a Christmas Tree for a few seconds. His armor, though, absorbs some of the shock and the protective spells absorb much more. However Trellus notices a familiarity to the spell as a Cleric. There are spells that have a Divine element added to the elemental energy as well.
Kyan, in some morbid elation, gleefully charges towards the next pair of statues but Bosk holds him back, explaining that he already has protective spells cast on him and it would be senseless for one to suffer undue harm just for the fun of it. (at least I think Bosk would say something like that.)
Meanwhile, Katinka's Unseen Servant stands up ahead dutifully holding the lantern and awaiting orders. The light reveals more of what lies ahead and those with Darkvision or Low Light vision see a room. It is fairly big and a 1-foot high raised platform occupies its center. In the center of that raised floor section is a 5' tall urn or amphorae.
