Bliss has a sudden intuition and glances inside the bell.

Perception 19.

Hmmm.

Hazel (Bob Danderfluff LaRue) HP: 43/43 AC: 18/14/15 - Faoil: 13/13 AC 18/13/16

Seeing that the enemies don't react, Hazel make a crude sign with his hand to them,,,

Sardok HP 35 AC 20/15/16
Saturday December 20th, 2014 11:35:11 AM

Sardok is sure that Hazel of course means "The Longbowman's Salute" which was used in the days when the hated "French" (which I believe was an exotic Elven tribe) would cut off the two fingers of captured archers.

Shel waits for their opponents to get in range of her spells.

Alleah steps back, keeping her calm as well as the Ogres, and calls forth a mist to conceal her.

Sardock continues to wait to spring the trap.

Bliss sends a well aimed bolt at Half-Orc 3. He staggers, looksing worse for wear, but still stands. Bliss takes a look inside the bell and sees that.. it's a bell!

Hazel taunts the Big Un's and launches a few stones up towards the large human looking thing.. or at least launches a few stones in the air.

Murphy changes into a bear and lumbers into the mist Alleah created, hoping a loud bear will draw her attention and bring her to him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Noyudindt waves a arm towards Half-Orc 2 and Ogre 3 as the mist starts to appear while snarling, "Leave them to me, get out of that and go deal with that moisquito down by the House. And find the one hiding!" he points a large hand towards Hazel. He then takes a step forward, points his hand towards the mist in the general area where he last saw Alleah and a torrent of frigid air and slicing ice sprays into the mist. (Alleah and Murphy, 14 cold damage, reflex DC 15 for half)
Ogres 1 and 2 begin commenting on the weather.
Ogre 3 withdraws from the mist and starts moving down towards the Parley House while smacking his club against his empty end and chuckling darkly towards Hazel. "You're gonna taste right nice with a sauce pecan"
Half-Orc 1 moves closer while readying another arrow and sends it Hazel's way. It's a hit! (Nat 20, no crit. Hazel 6 damage)
Half-Orc 2 follows his Ogre companion, though maybe is a bit less menacing.
Half-Orc 3 also moves down to get a better shot at the slinging halfling. (really.. Nat 20 agai and then another 20 on the crit confirm! Hazel 11 damage)
Noyudindt - At R8/S7
Ogre 1 - Calm, same spot
Ogre 2 - Calm, same spot
Ogre 3 - At M18/N17
Half-Orc 1 - At L4
Half-Orc 2 - At L17
Half-Orc 3 - 15 damage, at T12
Three of them are getting closer! One more round and the ambush can begin,"Shel thinks, trying her best to keep calm, seeing several blows struck against her friends.
Ref save vs DC15: 30 = Pass
The day is just going from bad to worse for Alleah. It sounds like the Ogres have released some kind of war dog or wolf after her, based on the growls she can hear. And now she receives a blast of cold from 'somewhere'. In the "glass half full" side of the equation, at least the ogres haven't squashed her yet.
One thing is clear - she doesn't want to stick around to give them a chance. Alleah makes a bolt for it (Run to E26. Base speed: 30ft. Run=120ft. Alleah's AC drops to 12).
Murphy HP 8/32 AC 16/14/14 CMD 14 (longstrider, 2 hours 59 minutes left) (black bear-->halfling) (Kim)  d20+7=23 ; d20+6=20 ; d20+13=17 ;
Sunday December 21st, 2014 10:10:52 AM
Murphy the Bear manages to escape a portion of frost damage, perhaps due to his thick fur. He hears Alleah running off, so runs off as well, going a slightly different direction, and enters into the Parley House, leaping on to the long table closest to room 2, then changing back into halfling form.
[Maximum move in black bear form with active longstrider spell: (40+10)*5=200'. Actual move: ~110-130 or so feet]
[Reflex save 23; Perception 20; Perception 17 after resuming halfling form]
NOTE REGARDING WOLDIAN SLOW DOWN!
Just a note regarding the slow down.
I will most likely not be able to post on either the 24th or 25th, but should be able to keep the normal schedule every other day. However, after the 24th I will not do an updated DM post unless everyone has posted so don't worry about missing a round of action or anything during the holidays. we'll go at the rate of the busiest person. If you need more Woldian time feel free to visit the Giggling Ghost for the Yuletide celebration!
Happy Holidays!
Sardok mentally judges the distance. Hazel's last step takes him too far out of range. Well, he is about to bravely take an ogre's swing just to maintain his anvil positioning.
Sardok glances at the puppy dog and makes a 'follow me' motion. He doubts if the animal can understand him, but thought he should make an effort anyway. He crouches low and stealthily moves closer to where the action is about to take place.
OOC: *chuckle* I might be out of my depth here. Since you're against a wall, the monster will probably be just "North" of you. Since I'm to your East, if I were to charge, I'd have to make a straight line, which would put me on his "East" and I wouldn't have flank. Hence, I may need a shorter distance so I can swing around a little bit and get behind him. ...in theory. =)
With the enemy getting closer, Shel does her best to keep calm and in position.
Alleah bolts out of the cloud of mist for the relative safety of her friends in an effort to get away from the big scary monster the ogres brought with them!
Murphy high tails it out of the mist as well and straight into the Parley House.
Hazel steps back and flings two stones towards the closest Ogre, each landing with a painful smack.
Sardock decides that now is the time to emerge and sneaks out from behind the wall. Without conceal he can't hide, but he doesn't draw attention to himself.
Faoil waits for a command from his owner.
Bliss fires another bolt from his hidey hole and drops one of the half-orcs to the dirt!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Noyudidnt turns on Ogre's 1 and 2 and yells at them, "What are you oafs doing? Get down there and squashed some halflings!" He then whirls back to face the buildings and stalks down the hill.

Orges 1 and 2, now out of their imposed calm, hussle down the hill after their leader.

Ogre 3 lets out a yell as the stones smash into him and charges down towards Hazel, club swinging into the slinger (Hazel 8 damage)

Half-orc 1 walks down closer to the fight while drawing another arrow and lets it fly towards Alleah, but it plops into the dirt several feet short.

Half-Orcs 2 charges along his larger companion, but his club nearly tumbles from his grasp with his poor showing of a swing.

Half-Orc 3 spins with a bolt to the side and collapses to the ground.

Murphy opens a pouch at his waist, and empties the contents into his left hand, pops the cap off a vial of CLW +3 and gulps it down, for 7 hp of healing to the flesh torn by the tip of the ogre mage's sword.

What are we going to do with Noyudint? At least his brother was willing to listen and discuss to a certain extent. Noyudint is imperious and murderous to the extreme.

Of course, thinks Murphy, maybe I talked too much.

Seems there was a way to an upper level here. The druid looks about for stairs, or a door which may lead to same. Maybe he'll see about getting to the roof in a conventional fashion. [Perception 26 - plus he had searched this building before, but Kent's map only showed the main floor at that time. He will be on the alert in the event there are any other critters within, but his main goals are to get somewhat healed up, get to the roof, and start battling thence against the force of biguns who have killing on their big wicked hearts.]

Bliss orders Mookie to take off and the bird listens, flying to the roof of the tallest nearby building. The little Halfling himself then takes a shot at one of the ogres, but the bolt glances off its thick skin.

Time to make it happen for Sardock. He steps up to behind the nearest ogre and stabs it in the back. It arches its back in pain, but still stands, if barely!

Hazel swings his staff into the wounded ogres groin and lands a solid blow. The Big Un's eyes roll up to their whites and he collapses.

Faoil races out from the building to hamstring the orc in front of Hazel and bring it down to the ground.

Shel readies her spell for when Noyudidn't takes just a few more steps forward...

Alleah draws on the powers of the Leylines and wills the light away from Noyudidn'ts eyes, but the large human looking Big Un's shakes it off.

Murphy sees no one else in the Parley house and rushes for some stairs to make his way to the roof. (we'll say he makes it this round)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Noyudidnt wrinkles up his nose at Alleah's attempt to blind him, "Foolish little snack. I think I will you alive the longest to watch the others roast." He makes his way down towards the witch.. and Shel's readied spell goes off into his side. He roars in pain and whirls towards the source, dropping a mental command on the roof top to go to sleep. (Shel, DC 15 Will save to avoid going to sleep for 4 minutes!)
Seeing their companion fall, Ogres 1 and 2 charge down the hill with clubs swinging towards Sardok. Ogre 1's club swings wide, but Ogre 2's connects with a numbing shock (Sardock, 9 damage!)
Ogre 3 falls to the ground, a new falsetto in need of dialysis.
Half-orc 1 keeps his distances and sends an arrow towards the new sword wielding combatant that manages a graze on the Halfling warrior (Sardok 3 damage)
Half-Orcs 2 grunts as he falls with the dogs teeth in his leg, but rolls back to his feet and lashes out towards the canine. (Faoil and Hazel get AoO on the standing orc... unless hit vs AC 15 for 15 HP he hits Faoil for 4 damage)
Just as the ancient Dwarven saying that the best time to dig the well is not when you are thirsty, the best to cast the healing is not when the best fighter is already under.
Shel easily shakes off the command to sleep sends out another blast of fire towards Noyudidn't and the large creature roars in pain again. She then ducks down on the roof to avoid further retribution.
Bliss pops up and sends a bolt towards Noyudidn't. He takes it in the leg and adds to his angery yell.
Alleah decides to try telling Noyudidnt what to do, aiding with a little magical Oomph. Surprisingly he listens, if grudgingly.
Hazel gracelessly tumbles to position an Ogre between himself and Sardok and then smacks the Big Un with his staff while ordering Faoil to attack. The dog moves forward and bites a out of the Ogre's ankle and brings him down with a crash.
Sardok takes a step forward and lashes out in a beautifully executed attack towards the recently grounded Ogre. A follow up strike with this short sword finishes it off.
Murphy lends himself some mystical first aid as he makes it to the roof top and peers out over the scene. The Sword's seem to be mopping up quite nicely.
Noyudidnt screams in pain at the burnination sent his way and the arrow suddenly sticking out from his thigh. He focuses his murderous gaze upon Alleah at her words and his eyes start to twitch as he fights her magically driven commands.. but after a moment, he sits his butt on the ground.
The remaining Ogre gets a bit of a confused look on his face when his leader sits down, but its blood is still up for a fight so it swings its club towards Sardok where it lands in a blow to the Halfling warrior. Wary at being suddenly outnumbered the beast takes a step back to give itself more room and some protection from the nearby buildings (Sardok, 12 damage!)
Sardok is spun about by the Ogre's mighty blow, but he comes to his senses just as he hears a loud -plumph- shake the ground. He looks about, and stares, dumbfounded, as the mighty half-ogre sits down as docily as a lady at tea. His blood-splattered face grins openly at the work that can only come from a blood witch. A deep-throated laugh rises in him. "Alleah! At the first tavern we pass I shall buy you any drink you desire!"
He turns to the ogre that hit him. He points to it and says to Hazel, "Stalking horse." Refering to a simple plan, known by all who swing steel. If Hazel would rush at the ogre and get his attention, that would free the badly wounded Sardok to run around to the ogre's backside, ensuring their tactical advantage.
What Sardok didn't took into account is that Hazel doesn't swing steel. Just his Sling Staff. And he is not that used to fight in groups.
"Talking horse? What the hell Sardok is talking about? That hit to his nogging really affected him. Hope he still knows who the bad guys are. I better get to the other side of this big guy, just in case."
Hazel smiles feeling Alleah's effort and caring in healing him. He will make her effort count.
He sees Faoil, and ask him, with his body language, to distract the ogre's attacks by barking to it. Faoil closes to the Ogre and starts barking at it. (Moves to P26)
Hazel double moves to R24 and then to S25, taking the Attack of Opportunity.
Sardok talks strategy in code to Hazel and waits for his companion to move before springing into action himself.
Seeing the large creature on the ground Shel takes advantage of the situation and sents another fiery blast his way.
Alleah moves up to cast some needed healing on Hazel.
Puzzling through what Sardok wanted him to do Hazel rushes at the Ogre with Faoil barking loudly behind him. He closes in and takes a solid blow from the ogre's club for his efforts. (Hazel, 14 damage)
From his perch on the roof Murphy peers down and sents a jolt of electricity into the remaining ogre.
Now that Hazel is in position Sardok moves to flank the ogre and attacks, drawing lines of blood from the Big 'Un
Bliss stays hidden and looks about, but nothing out of the ordinary other than the combatants is to be seen.
Noyudidnt puts an arm up over his head in an effort to shield himself from the fiery attacks from above, but to no avail. His magically ordered task completed to the letter, he comes to his feet and.. flees! he breaks out in a run heading for the woods.
The last ogre whirls on Sardok as the little blades cut in and smashes down with his club in with the solid whack of wood on flesh. engrossed as he is in the battle he doesn't notice his companion's withdrawal. (sardok, 12 damage)
A creature trying to scrape goo off itself, or another creature assisting, does not need to make an attack roll; hitting the goo is automatic, after which the creature that hit makes a damage roll to see how much of the goo was scraped off. Hazel swings for the remaining ogre, but misses while sending Faoil after the fleeing Noyudidnt. The dog catches up to the large creature, but misses with his snapping jaws.
Barely standing, Sardok still manages to lay into the ogre in front of him and drops him to the ground.
Alleah moves forward and releases a blast of healing energy! It'd help the dead orcs and ogres too if they weren't so dead.
Murphy would drop a tanglefoot bag, but the ogre is already down! Save that for another day!
Bliss moves forward and fires an arrow off at Noyudidnt, but it goes wide.
Shel has much better luck than her companions and her fiery blasts lays into Noyudidnts side... he screams and goes down in a charred pile.
After he fails, the large, beautiful human shifts back to his original form of a mishappen, though still large, half-ogre mage hybrid.
Murphy says, "Hazel, I'm going for the orc. Come if you want. I'll catch up in a moment. Shel, Alleah, try to burn Noyudint's body - he regenerates, except from burning. Great work, friends." He runs down to where Sardok is, and says, "You look like you could use this. Let me touch you, if you do not mind." He heals their new companion for 11 hp using cure moderate wounds. "Do you feel up to chasing an orc, now? And to ride the whirlwind? If so, I shall summon a whirlwind, we will enter it - there's a bit of buffeting inside - then we shall catch up to the half orc, and deal with it. Keep in mind I would like to be able to question him. Agreed?"
He then summons an air elemental. When the wispy hawk-shaped creature arrives, Murphy says in Auran, "Kiitän sinua tulossa. On puoli orc jatkuva tähän suuntaan paitsi mäkeä." He points in the direction the half orc ran. "Kun sanon, 'nyt,' poimia minä ja ystäväni sinun tornado, ja päästää meidät varovasti kentällä viisikymmentä metriä ennen puoli orc."*
Murphy says to Sardok, "Yield to the wind, and enjoy the ride with me." He then says to the air elemental, "Nyt."
Note: If Sardok does not want to come along in the whirlwind, then Murphy's request to the elemental is only for him to go on the jaunt.
*Translation: "Thank thee for coming. There is a half orc running that direction beyond the hill. Pick up me and my friend here in your whirlwind, and let us down gently on the ground fifty feet ahead of the half orc."
As the whirlwind begins to form, Murphy thinks to add, "Shell, 'Leah, check the chief for goods, for magic before any further conflagrations," he ends shouting over the sound of the rising wind.
He takes no damage from the whirlwind's touch (Reflex save 20 vs DC 12), and is pulled into the cyclonic cone (Reflex fail 10) - though he would have yielded to the wind willingly otherwise. [My thought is that if a summoner or other willingly enters into the whirlwind, yet makes a reflex save, it is as though he is surfing the wind in a way - skillfully co-operating rather than being uncontrollably buffeted about. In this case, with a failed 2nd save, he is not quite so skillful - but still is borne aloft - likely getting disoriented and buffeted, so he will take damage each additional round he is in the whirlwind.]
Next the wind goes for Sardok, perhaps 10 feet from where Murphy stood. After picking up Sardok, the elemental hastens 80 feet in the direction Murphy pointed out as the direction the half orc had fled. Next round, 100 feet, at which point the wind, if it has caught up to the orc, sets down the two halflings. Even if it has not caught up, it sets them down, as it goes back to its standard elemental form. Murphy has taken 5+4=9 points of buffeting damage. Sardok 4+3=7 points - unless he makes his 2nd save, but willingly 'fails' - and you want to go with the 'wind-surfer' notion. [I rolled 2 additional Reflex saves (24, 21, then realized I don't need to roll them.]
If, after exiting the in sight of the half orc, Murphy tells the elemental, "Go and knock down the half orc," then realizes he needs to say it in Aurun, "Mene kaataa puolet orc!"
If in range, the windy hawk slams into the fleeing archer [AC 17] for 5 hp damage, ending up several feet away after the slam.
[to DM Jon - if you need to break up the stated actions, please do so. Just want to give you an idea of where he is headed.]
DM: If you're "riding the whirlwind", don't bother with saves. To do so you have to fail both and always take Damage each round.
luckily all of the damage Shel did to Noyudidnt was fire based so he is already pretty crispy..
the others find that the fallen orcs and ogres are all quite dead, not mostly, and don't stir from the healing.
Hazel may be right to question Bliss' choice to chase the Orc.. While the Halfling gains some ground the Orc spends all his time running and continues to gain distance.
Murphy spends several Rounds Healing, summoning and then getting scooped up and carted off.
Sardock too will go for a ride.. But it will take some time to catch up to the fleeing orc.
The group hunting after the orc are able to catch up to it eventually and the elemental combined with Bliss' arrows are quickly able to take the creature out. (just to skip all that..). There are no other signs of any hostile Big 'Un's around. Looks like that orc was just running scared.
Back at the Parley House Alleah begins searching the bodies while they all decide just what they're going to do with a few sets of ogre trousers. Maybe fashion a tent of a sail?
The loot gathered is not considerable, but there is some value to it.
(1) Large Greatsword
(2) Composite Longbows for 14 strength
(3) Greatclubs
(2) Large greatclubs
(6) large javelins
(1) Ogre Pants
[Uh - as stated earlier, Murphy's aim was to disable, not slay the orc. He would have called off the elemental as soon as the orc either surrendered or fell to the ground - and intended to heal him up enough to survive... and answer questions. By truncating, I hope that intention has not been totally eliminated.]
Murphy does try to keep the half orc alive, bound, hobbled with rope at ankles and knees, hands and elbows tied behind the back, and led back to the area by the bell. If that occurs, he will ask the orc a number of questions about what their plans had been, and why Noyudint was seeking out his brother, and what they might have heard about Idafeatyu. As he has been impressed with Alleah's ability to think of good questions, he sees if she wants to talk things over with the half orc.
He tells the half orc, too [if alive], "We really did want to interact with you peacefully, and I did tell you the truth as to what would happen if you attacked us. Do you think your heart can let your ears listen when someone gives you a chance like that?"
He also asks Sardok and Bliss if they have seen Fatine since the biguns arrived. Mainly, he is concerned for her welfare and whereabouts. He also will mention, "She has a wand that can help us - I know," and he nods toward Sardok, "that he needs some healing," (Murphy is not sure he wants to mention more names than Fatine in the presence of the captive) - "and this orc here also may need a touch or two."
As bonfires seem to be arranged, Murphy recommends that the place in the center of the compound be used to scatter their ashes - where the two oak saplings are, as well as the replacement for the third acorn lies under the ground.
Woods. This place has a copse of woods nearby? That is news to the druid, and he is glad that in this generally arid region that some trees grow. He takes the time to take a look at the woods, to see their extent, which certainly cannot be large, else the group would have noticed the last time. Or, did the woods just appear over the past few weeks. Was another druid here? Or was some other magic at work?
Out of earshot of the half orc (if still alive), Murphy speaks. "I know we should get the bell back," he says to Alleah. "Perhaps we should have someone climb up to the watch building, where you can see pretty well for miles about. Before we go, though, I want to spend just a bit more time in the Parley House, and also am thinking we should check the tunnel from the top of the hill down to that building over there."
With all the discussion going on, Sardok gets up from his nap and addresses the tactical situation.
"I understand that there may be some question about the wisdom of camping here. However, this spot is ideal for a number of reasons. Most importantly it has a clearing of over 100 feet. That means that if any big'uns do come here, we'll be able to see and hear them a long way off, and we'll have time to prepare. In the woods, the best we can hope for is 20 feet of clearing, which isn't enough to avoid being pounced on.
Also, we can all camp on the high ground of the roof. That gives us an almost guarantee of defending ourselves against any except flying enemies. In the woods we'd be sleeping on the ground, and have no natural defenses.
And if any are going to come hunt us, I'd rather it be here, on favorable ground, surrounded by a good clearing on high ground. We'll be dragging/carrying a huge bell, so we won't be able to cover all our tracks, so they can find us on the trail. Hence, let us fight them on ground of our choosing, rather than coming at us at close quarters in the woods.
Also, Bliss, let Alleah sleep, you can take third watch."
That done, Sardok remounts the roof and goes back to sleep.
Half Orc prisoner
The half orc Murphy ensures is completely disarmed (he already is bound and hobbled). He gives him some water. "What is your name, and how long have you been with Noyudint?" After talking with him for a little while, says, "We may give you more freedom in a little while, depending upon how you act. For now, though, as a precaution, I will be making it a little harder for you to hear and see - nothing permanent." Hhe takes two bits of cloth from the prisoner's clothing, and uses that to form plugs for his ears, to cut down on his ability to hear. He also blindfolds him.
"Shall we let him rest under the bell?" Murphy asks. If others agree, he asks Bliss if he can tilt the bell on its side (Does Mookie fly out?), maneuver the half orc underneath, then let the bell serve as a chamber for their prisoner for a bit. He wants to make sure that air can somehow get into the bell, lest he suffocate.
Regarding Fatine
"Ah, I'm glad to hear that nothing untoward befell our friend Fatine, then. Thank you, Bliss. So you have the wand I lent her? Good. If you know how to use it, feel free to do so. If not, I can take a few moments and make sure we are all back to full health." Sardok gets back 3+9=12 (full), Murphy gets 5+7=12(full), Hazel gets 7+6+9=22 (full).
"Shel, are you all right? Is anyone else injured?"
Where to camp
"Thank you, Sardok. Just before you bed down for the night, though, please listen for a bit to this talkative hobbit.
"Alleah, I hear your fears. Listen to my thoughts. Among some of the leadership of Crescent Valley, and among our group - and quite a bit before you joined up with us - there has been talk about re-establishing this very place to again fill the function it once had: To serve as a place of peace and trade between Crescent Valley and the Red Hills.
"We have tried talking peace with Idafeatyu - and he did talk with us for a time before he decided to attack us. I made the attempt you saw with Noyudint - to much less positive effect. They and their companions are slain, and now ashes, save one. By the way, well fought, friends. I'm sorry you did not find me in bear form from within your misty cloud, Alleah - I growled so you might know where I was, and grab on to the fur for a swift ride away. I think your feet worked well, though."
"If there ever is to be peace between our peoples - Red Hills and Crescent Valley- then we must defeat those who will fight at all costs against peace, and seek to pursuade those others who might be persuaded. I do not want us to run in fear of shadows.
"Will others come? When we ran up and over the hill in pursuit, we saw only one. Take half a minute to get to the top of the hill, and you can see for miles around. For a place to sleep, and from which to watch, we could use the watch building up there. Along one side is a secret door which leads to that building, there," and he points out the building at G5 on the map.
"I will say this, though. If enough of you fear to remain overnight in this place, I will go along with the notion of leaving, on one condition. We spend 45 minutes learning what we can of this place, then leave while there is still light, and set up camp a bit away from here. I would rather stay here, for a more thorough investigation, but am open to reason - if my one condition can be met.
"I want to see if there are tunnels beneath the Parley House itself, as well as under the adjacent building," at R23.
"Alleah, Shel, others - can you go along with that? Stay here 45 minutes, use that small portion of time efficiently to investigate, then leave before the light has faded. Though I would prefer to stay here overnight, and leave early in the morn. So, two options I suggest: 45 minutes search, then leave, or a longer search, and remain until dawn, then return to Humble's Ford."
Searching
"During our search, how about two groups? Those who can grow in size, clear rubble from that building," and he indicates the one at R23, "and see if there might be a trap door such as the treasure house had. Others, let us search the Parley House itself for trap doors. Perhaps if one of us is lowered down the water well we may find an offshoot from there. The more we know of this place, the better we might do should we one day need to return.
"We also need to search the tunnel from the watch fort down to the far building. Mind you the dust therein. And, if any think it necessary, then let one of us stand in the watch fort, and watch the surrounding countryside in order to address what Alleah has said."
If the 45 minute option is chosen, Murphy focuses on the Parley House - especially down into and along the sides of the well, but along the floors, especially along the edges of the building, and corners, and hopes that perhaps Bliss and Alleah can examine the adjacent building. After that, he explores the dusty corridor leading from the far building up to the watch tower.
[Perception: 32 - Parley House; 16 in the tunnel that goes to the watch fort.]
After searching is done, Murphy ensures people are fed, ponies are cared for (he places them inside the Parley House if we elect to stay there), the prisoner is fed and given more to drink, given a chance to attend to bodily needs under watch, and stored again under the bell (put within or above the Parley House), then joins those who slumber, after praying some words of thanksgiving to Eberyon and other heavenly beings who watch over them.
DM Jon!
Thursday January 8th, 2015 6:35:59 PM
The group argues over the wisdom of staying at the Parley House for the night or moving away. While both side seems to have good point it looks like the general consensus is to stay where they are.. one can tell this by the two members that promptly fall asleep.
The hafl-orc Murphy questions responds to the questions simply, "I am Grank. Noyudidnt keep my belly full for two winters." Having just seen his companions slaughtered in short order he does not put up a fight at being gagged or otherwise deafened.. or in being put under the bell. At least he is still alive.
For Murphy and anyone else searching the grounds no other secret doors or passages are discovered other than the one they found on the previous visit and the one containing the treasure room with the bell.
Assuming no other actions for the evening it passes uneventfully. No other Big 'Uns come to the house and the only thing to disturb the sleep of the Humble's Sword is the horrid smell from the ogre's pants.
One thing I forgot to mention from last night
"Yes, Hazel, you may be right. Some strange things regarding time seem to be occurring regarding events between home and Parley House. I wonder if some strange magic may be afoot. How could we get so far so fast this last time, when it took seven times or more longer to reach it in the first place?"
Short conversation
"Um, yes," Murphy answers Alleah.
He arises two hours before dawn, prays, and changes some of his spell selections, prepares some food for breakfast for all, wakes them up, feeds and waters the ponies, remounts them with their load, and, just before the sun appears over the hills, asks, "Shall we head out?"
He takes some time to speak with Bliss's good friend. "Alleah, I know I have exasperated you to some extent. That is not my intention, though it may be a result. There are big things brewing between the Red Hills and Crescent Valley. Yes, I know we contracted with Iangold Laughshield for the return of the bell. But as we have opportunity, I think we need to learn what we can, for now and for our futures."
Then he asks his friends, out of earshot of the half orc. "Shall we free him, or what?"
Alleah doesn't hear any of Murphy's words. The adrenaline still courses through her veins and clouds her rational thinking. "You left me! We were standing face to face with the ogres and you left me standing there!" Alleah can't keep it in any longer. Her voice gets softer and her eyes start to well up "I've never been more scared. I, I just want to get back to Humble's Ford and, and, and have a drink"
She sinks to the ground with her head dropped. "You know what?" Alleah reaches in to her kit and pulls out a small flask of ale. She twists the lid clean from the bottle and proceeds to take a huge swig. She closes her eyes as the feeling of warmth reaches her stomach and her worries become clouded by the alcohol.
With a small smile she extends the bottle out to Murphy.
Sardok will be damned if anyone is going to start drinking before him.
Rousing slowly from his blankets from a sound sleep that can only come after a good fight, Sardok was in a bleary-eyed haze, finishing a well-cooked breakfast, when suddenly Alleah's shouts rang out. Now fully awake, Sardok stalked down and caught the conversation between the two.
"Don't mind if I do," says Sardok as he intercepts Alleah's flask and takes a pull. "Not bad, but here try mine," he says offering up both Alleah's flask and one of his own that appeared out of thin air.
"Now, you two," says Sardok as he sits down and motions for the other two to do the same. It looks like he's got quite a head of steam built up and this may go on for a while. "What we've got here is, a failure to communicate. So we get like what we got yesterday.
Now, Murphy, you can admit it or not, but the fact stands that, 1) you were not a big, huge, pile of useful in that last fight. And, 2) when you did start being useful you were doing the exact thing that I said you should be doing: On top of that building, casting spells.
Alleah, this is also part your fault. Don't look at me like that, I told you to get on top of that building too. Instead of letting Murphy have his talk and take his lumps alone, you followed him right out. Had you done what I said, Murphy could've beat feet from the start and you wouldn't have worried about making no fog or riding no bear. Have another drink, girl.
It's not that I don't think it was courageous what you two did. It takes a powerful big pair o' stones to face down a gang of ogres like that. But it was stupid. Don't look at me like that, it was. Murphy, I saw it. If he would've hit you -this- much harder, or fought a little smarter, we'd be standing over your body saying some nice words right about now.
It's not that talking doesn't have its place. It does. But it doesn't have every place. Just like fighting doesn't have every place. And the wise man knows when to talk and when not to talk.
And this isn't about me telling you what to do. I ain't no one's master and I don't plan to be. But sometimes you might talk sense and sometimes I might talk sense. And the one that talks sense needs to be listened to.
Now we're gonna do some things that make sense. The first is I'm gonna let that orc live, and we're gonna bring him back to town to face justice. Yep, I been planning to put Krieg through his gullet since I laid eyes on him, but we're gonna see how it goes the other way. There. See? We're already getting better.
And tonight Alleah and I are gonna get drunk. Right and proper. I'm gonna tell stories to make your head spin, girl, and you're gonna have nightmares and puke your guts up in the morning after, but you'll feel better for it.
Now I think that's a good idea."
He stands up and calls out. "Bliss, we bout ready to get this here bell a movin'?"
Sardok gets the orc out from under the bell, ties his hands behind him good and proper, and takes the other end of the rope. "Don't speak, Orc" is the only words he ever says to him.
Murphy hears Alleah, realizes he blew it (it doesn't matter that he went one direction to try to pull focus away from her, he ended up delaying a moment before he did as he told her he would, and she didn't even recognize it was he roaring as a bear for her sake in the mist). "I... I'm sorry, 'Leah." He reaches to take the proffered flask, sitting down beside her, when Sardok barges in to their conversation and grabs it from him.
Astonished at this interception, and about to protest, he reaches for Alleah's flask once the newcomer holds it forth. He holds up a finger to signal, 'wait' on the offer of the second flask, and takes a drink from Alleah's. Nowhere as deep a drink as she took, but he welcomes her gesture. "If you hear a bear roar in the mist, friend, it likely will be me, again." He hands her flask back to her, then takes up Sardok's, with a light swig to measure the taste, offers Sardok's to her if she will, and if she won't, gives it back to Sardok.
He listens to the harangue pouring out generously from Sardok's tongue.
As Sardok stands, do does Murphy. "Hold on there," he says, touching his wrist to get his attention. "You poured out a mouthful. Now, listen to me. You rightly said, 'the wise man knows when to talk and when not to talk.' And I will allow that I let my tongue move too much after, having ducked the fist of Noyudint, I should have scooted my feet, with Alleah doing the same, back to the Parley House, instead of babbling on. We already by then had learned most of what we needed to know.
"Hoping for any sense of fair play from that puffed up lout was foolish on my part. I apologize, Alleah, to you for that. And to the rest of you, too. So, you are right on that count, Sardok. I was not able to put as much of a dent into our opponents as I otherwise might have - and I know you came close to paying a dear price for that.
"Regarding the disposition of the half orc, though - that will be a decision of the party. It is not for you to declare and be done with. Freedom, or death, or trial, have been proposed. Or wait and see. As he spends time with us, he gets to know more about us. Sardok, you are a gifted tactician. And you're a bull like as not to run any of us over. Hazel and Shel and I have been with this group called Humble's Sword since we formed it. Alleah and Bliss have well proven their worth over time. And so have you. But there is a pile of things you don't know about us, or the way we like to do things. You have moved in like you are in command.
"There likely is a pile of things about you we don't know, either. Let's see if we can remedy that in both directions."
He walks over to one of his ponies, Sugar, and takes his backpack from the side of her saddle. He reaches in and pulls out a sheaf of papers bound together with several strings, and walks back to Sardok.
"This here is a record of how we met for the annual Valley games a while back, won them as a group, got pulled into a rescue, battled critters, figured things out, were falsely accused of murdering one of the loveliest people in our town, cleared ourselves of said murder by finding the one who did it. And that involved a lot of talking and questioning of the brother of the ogre mage that you just met - Idafeatyu. There are maps, and pictures, and drawings of various people and battles. As you have time over the next day or two, if you've a mind to, read it. It may help you understand us better than you do now.
"And if you have stories to tell of yourself, how you learned the things you know, and the like, my ears will be open."
Regarding Grank the half orc, Murphy says - before he is taken out from under the bell, "So far Bliss votes for freeing him, Sardok says he should stand trial, Hazel says he should be put to a merciful death. I suggest we bring him along. We give him food and water, and keep him secure as we can from escape. I have one set of manacles for his wrists - tougher to break than rope. Before we arrive back at Humble's Ford, we come to a decision as a group. Grank mentioned the bell, and the giants' involvement. We have been trying to pursuade some of the leaders of Humble's Ford that there is a threat from the Red Hills - his testimony might be potent. Shel, Alleah, you can let us know your thoughts as we travel along."
"Shoot!" he exclaims as they are about to set out. "Excuse me for five minutes." He begins to run around the area, maniacally planting acorns about where each opponent fell - except that he plants them far enough from the walls of Parley House to ensure that future roots will lack reach to damage its foundations. He waters each acorn, then drives his horses northward. "Yeah. We can go now."
Alleah smiles and nods to both Sardok and Murphy. The words of her elders are wise. She gives a sniff and wipes her nose along the sleeve of her jersey.
"*sniff* Well let's not stand about the trees doing nothing like an elf. Let's get this bell back to where it belongs"
"As for the prisoner, well, we can't kill him in cold blood. And I don't fancy taking him back with us. Having him in town could cause all kinds of unexpected problems. He could gather intelligence and possibly escape. And things are already uncomfortable enough with the Ffloy folk there. It may be possible to have him forget the events of the past day and release him? That way he won't recall us, the bell, or the fight"
OOC: The spell Bestow Curse allows you to "invent your own curse, but it should be no more powerful than those described". Would forgetting the past day count as the equivalent to a permanent -6 to an ability score? Or losing 50% of your actions for the rest of your life?
Bliss sleeps like a log through the discussion. Mookie, however, wakes up and turns a stern eye on the argumentative types and their discussion. And drinking.
"Hush," the bird caws. "You'll wake the Kid. And gimme a sip of that stuff."
He listens a bit to what is being said. "Meh, I've seen this before, plenny a times. Huge ego adventurers gotta mouth off before they figure out how to work together. Sometimes someone gets his feathers all fluffed and goes off the reservation. The good ones, the heroes, they figure it out. Maybe you guys can try to be good ones. We'll see."
The decision is made to wake and get moving. Mookie just shakes his head, but Bliss wakes up quick enough when he has to. The good little soldier rubs the sleep from his eyes, casts his enlarge(s), grabs his end of the bell, and follows orders.
"Good morning!" he says, not quite aware of the time.
Alleah smiles and gives Faoil a scratch behind the ears. He reminds her a little of some of the strays she often saw in Dirt City. Of course, Faoil has been much better cared for. She reaches in to her kit and pulls out a stale Christmas cookie. He shouldn't mind it being a little old, she hopes. Alleah tosses the cookie gently in the air for Faoil.
"Welll, I'm thinking I'll take the prisoner into a clearing. Keep his eyes blindfolded and his legs tied. I'll curse him and then make a run for it. He will then no doubt wonder where he is, take off his blindfold and start untying his legs. That should allow me to get some distance from him" she discusses her half-orc catch&release program.
If there are no issues with this...
Alleah walks with the prisoner in front of her. She regularly looks back over her shoulder to make sure the others are still in sight, still a little anxious about being left alone.
"Listen, I have done what I can to save your life" she whispers to Grank "What happens next will be up to you. I am going to make you forget the past days events and then you will be free. If you resist, the others will have no choice but to kill you where you stand. This is the only way you can be safely released and go home to your family and friends. Do you understand?"
If the prisoner agrees, the young girl will then cast Bestow Curse on the half-orc. (Leyline check: 62=Pass)
OOC: Alleah is asking the half-orc to intentionally fail his Will save. The goal of the curse will be primarily to forget the past 24hrs, and if possible, to refrain from harming halflings
The trip back to town takes a little longer than the trip out to the Parley house.. how long? Well it's hard to say. To some it seemed like a week while to others just a day. It probably all depends on how much you like listening to stories or just how anxious you are to get home and see that special someone.
However long it takes, the trip back is uneventful and the Humble's Swords are spotted on the outskirts of down by a local farmer that sends his son running into town to let folks know they're on their way with the bell. Soon after that an ox cart rumbles up the road and the driver tells them to load the bell on the back so he can take it over to the Temple of Ffloy and to hop on if they want a ride (at least to those not already riding)
If you want help carrying the bell, though, we have three ponies. I've got enough pieces we could rig up a cart if we find supplemental wood along the way to make it strong enough, or maybe have something at an angle as a travois they could put the bell on and drag the ends of the wood along the ground. Or we could rig a litter between two ponies." He thinks to add. "Uh, I can change into a bear, if that would help?"
As they arrive in town after one to six days, Murphy is glad to have the help so that Bliss is no longer so burdened. "What we really need with us now is a bard, to lead the bell in procession with singing, right? But, since we don't have one - let's escort it, three of us on the right, three on the left. Alleah, you want to lead us on the left, and Shel, lead us on the right? You can be the belles of the bell, and we'll stand in as ringers." He follows behind Shel.
"Bliss, you showed real commitment, and stamina of will, to carry the bell this far. Though you are generally small of stature, you are large of heart."
Murphy joins in with Alleah in thanking the driver of the oxcart, giving him three gold pieces.
"So, you want to know how the rescue of the golden bell went?" Murphy asks Iangold. "Well, here is the short version." And Murphy begins the 'short version' of the recovery operation to those gathered.
"When it was discovered that the Golden Trading Bell was missing, and that apparently biguns and real biguns had carried it away, several of us thought what we might do to recover it, and discussed that with Broker Iangold Laughshield, here.
"Several of us set out together in search of the Golden Bell. Among us who faced the giants were Hazel, who is - where did he go?"
He looks around for a moment. "Hazel!" he calls out. After waiting a beat, he continues. "Some of you know that Hazel is engaged to the lovely Alouryn, cleric of Flower. I think he is more excited to see her lovely countenance than anything else at the moment," Murphy says with a chuckle. He then points out each of the others as he mentions them in turn. "In our company also was Shel Breezelee Kromnite, who has the power of the flame. Alleah Highhill, healer and persuader. Bliss, who is often of small stature, is also very quick, and skilled with his bah. Mookie, an astonishingly talented crow, travels with Bliss. Fatine is not here with us at the moment, but she helped us along the way. And we should welcome to our town Sardok, who showed himself a skilled tactician, and stalwart in battle.
"We followed the giants' trail southward for some time. We came eventually to the Parley House, an ancient place of commerce and trade between Crescent Valley and the peoples of the Red Hills. No one other than a few carrion crawlers seemed to be present. We ourselves had been there recently, when we confronted the wicked ogre mage, Idafeatu - the giant who was behind the murder of our beloved cleric of Flower, Lady Sarabella Lovesong. After he told us of his involvement and support for the murdering group of adventurers, he then attacked and tried to kill us. He ended up dead at our hand at that time as we defended ourselves against his might and magic.
"Well, on this, our second visit to Parley House, we searched diligently for, and then found the Golden Bell. Massive it was - as you can see here, and stored in a chamber under ground. Bliss and Alleah were able to muscle it up and out.
"Just as it was set upon the ground, what should happen but up over the top of the hill three giants, including two ogres, and several half orcs appeared. They started walking down the hill toward us. Sardok made several good suggestions. Alleah and I went to talk with the biguns. It turned out that the brother to Idafeatu had come to visit. His name was Noyudidnt. No, I am not making these names up. Well, Noyudidnt thought we might be his brothers slaves. He and his companions called us 'morsels'. When I let them know that we are no one's 'morsels' - Noyudidnt took my response as somewhat uppity, hauled out his great sword, and took a swipe at me. Well, then, things got exciting."
Murphy pauses in his story, to make sure he has people's attention. It looks like people's attention is wandering [Cannot get a decent performance: speaking roll!]
After that, we met and defeated Idafeatu. The message, or response to it on Noyudidnt's part, took a while. By the time the second brother arrived, we already had found the bell.
"I was going to tell Noyudidnt that his brother was dead, but he decided to make me dead before we were able to reach that part of the conversation. Some giants would rather beat you up instead of talking or listening. I need to figure out how to talk with them, but also stay out of their reach."
"How about something decent for a change?" Peck.
"You think I actually like this garbage?" Gulp.
"I wouldn't eat that for a thousand gold."
Perception DC 2: Highlight to display spoiler: {You note that the worm has mysteriously disappeared.}
Murphy HP 32/32 AC 16/14/14 CMD 14 (Kim)
Friday January 16th, 2015 12:04:09 AM
Murphy loves how fastidious Mookie is.
He then remembers a promise. "Broker Iangold Laughshield, I know you met Sardok just before we left to recover the bell. You should know that this halfling is experienced, and his knowledge and skill on this task were well appreciated. He has a handle on history, on strategy and tactics - and, I believe, some acquaintance with the Red Hills. Indeed, had I heeded more of his counsel, I likely would not have received a wound from the edge of the ogre mage's sword. He also is brave, and stood against a vicious ogre, battling against him with Hazel and Faoil, and not relenting though himself badly battered. I thank heaven above that he did as he did. I want to recommend him to you. The rest of us you have worked with, and know to an extent. Sardok well proved himself with us members of Humble's Sword.
"Sardok, Broker Iangold Laughshield and his fellow clerics and followers of Ffloy came recently to Humble's Ford. They hope to help bring prosperity and success to our little town." He has spend a little amount of time among Ffloy's followers, so introduces those whose names he knows to Sardok.
Alleah -- RobC -- AC 15/14/12 -- CMD 12 -- HP 26/26
Friday January 16th, 2015 4:54:07 AM
Seeing a small gathering of people form, Alleah decides to try and entertain some of the children.
She begins with "Got your nose", "coin behind your ear", and "the broken thumb". Though that may net a few chuckles from the younger kids, Alleah resorts to magic to entertain the older ones.
She casts Prestidigitation and uses it to change the colour of their hair to beautiful hues from the rainbow.
Sardok HP 27/35 AC 20/15/16
Friday January 16th, 2015 10:23:23 AM
Sardok shakes the Broker's hand and humbly accepts the high praise. He asks about the town's history and mumbles the appropriate phrases that he hopes he can serve the town and improve the future for all citizens.
But when Alleah starts to entertain a small crowd of children, Sardok's eyes watch the performance with distracted earnest, until he finally says, "Excuse me" and joins the crowd.
He recreates her 'coin behind the ear' trick, his face splitting into an uncharacteristically bright smile. He gradually works his way up, producing large rocks, entire handfuls of coins, and even formerly-worn socks from apparently thin air.
He finishes with a grand finale of grabbing from behind Alleah's ear something that -- of course -- couldn't be her underwear, but he recommends that she check anyway.
OOC: Substituting Sleight of Hand for Performance check, Take 10 + 11 = 21. Great Performance.
Bliss (AC20, HP23of23, -1 Con) & Mookie (AC18, HP13) (Cayzle)
Bliss claps and whistles in delight as he enjoys the show immensely.
"You guys are great," he shouts.
Shel Breezelee Kromnite (Gerald) HP25/26; AC 14/14/11
Friday January 16th, 2015 6:04:05 PM
Shel was getting impatient with the delay. Her stomach was rumbling, if anyone was paying attention. "The show's nice, but it's not putting food in my belly. Can we get on with this and have a quick dinner? Then we can watch the magic show."
Hazel (Bob Danderfluff LaRue) HP: 24/43 AC: 18/14/15 - Faoil: 13/13 AC 18/13/16
Hazel stands next to Shel, and nods to her words.
"Have you seen Alouryn?"
"I haven't seen her. I figured she'd be around here somewhere. If I were you, I'd go find her. I'm about ready to duck out of here for dinner anyway."
Prestidigitations (Post 1 of 3) (ADM Kim)
Sunday January 18th, 2015 4:05:47 AM
The fellow who drives the oxcart is pleased by the funds provided him by Alleah and then Murphy. He tips his straw hat to Alleah and the rest of the group.
A bit later, the children and several of the adults seem to enjoy the simple misdirections and 'magic' of Alleah and Sardok - though a mother of one of the children covers her young boy's eyes as Sardok holds forth the feminine undergarment.
Of Ffloy: Iangold and company (Post 2 of 3) (ADM Kim)
Sunday January 18th, 2015 4:06:32 AM
Iangold and some of his fellow brokers listen to the party's explanations, and are attended as well by some of the local citizens of Humble's Ford who have gathered as they see the golden bell being hauled toward the temple of Ffloy.
As Murphy speaks, some listen, others seem absorbed in simply admiring the golden instrument on the cart, and a few discuss quietly how they are going to lift it down from the cart to the ground safely.
A few turn their attention back toward Murphy as he mentions the giant swinging his sword at the speaker. As Hazel picks it up, several clap at his succinct rendition, and some even laugh with appreciation for what he said, as well as Shel's concurrence.
Iangold focuses in when Murphy mentions the two ogre mage brothers, and the correspondence between them.
"So, if you had been more thorough in your searching your first time there, we might have had the bell back well before now?" the chief broker asks with a raised eyebrow.
One cleric, whom Murphy knows as Simon, cups his hands and shouts. "You set your hands to the sides of your mouth and talk loud like this from a hundred yards away, Murphy!" Simon and a few of those near him laugh.
Another one, though, one of the few female brokers - Berylla - says, "Shush, Simon. You are being rude. These brave people faced down huge biguns, and brought our bell back. Do you think you could stand before giants, and defeat them in their strength?"
Simon's face flushes, and those who laughed with him decide they should look up at the sky or over at the bell. One of them, though, steps forward. "Thank you all, brave halflings. Thank you, each one." He advances and holds out his hand to Hazel, then Shel, and Bliss, then Alleah, Sardok, and Murphy. "You have our gratitude, and we believe what you have done will help this community prosper. My name is Cottar, of Angel Springs." He turns to his fellows, and says, "Let us hold a dinner in their honor - once the bell is remounted back at the trading square." He looks toward their chief cleric and adds, "If that sounds fair to you, Broker Iangold."
Iangold has a momentary look of irritation which quickly dissipates. "Well, let it be a luncheon - we can have it at trade square tomorrow shortly past noon." He turns to a diminutive round-faced halfling, and says, "Wellby, make up commemorative circles in honor of the occasion, with a simple bell in the center and some text I shall give you to sell as mementos of the occasion to those gathered." Then speaking to the one who shook the adventurers' hands, he says, "As you proposed it, Cottar, I make it your purview to attend to the other necessary arrangements."
Concerning the mention of Fatine, the broker waves his hand away. "That shall be for you to decide. She received half of her portion the day you left, and if you choose you may reserve the other half from the fifteen hundred gold we contracted with you for the second half of payment due upon return of the bell." He turns, "Simon, you and Berylla take these six in, use this key, and provide them the payment in assayed gems and gold, as they wish. And this small one, I believe," he says, indicating Bliss, "prefers platinum. There should be sufficient in store to cover his needs." He pulls from under his shirt then over his head a linen cord with a key on the end, and hands it to Simon. "Have them initial their contracts next to the 'payment received' line as the funds are distributed. That should be 250 gold pieces equivalent each." In a bit you'll learn from Simon that gems of 50 and 100 gold piece value are available. There is enough platinum for Bliss, even enough for a second person should they also want platinum pieces. Adequate gold is also there.
Then Iangold speaks to the group before they enter the temple. "Forgive me my words about not finding the bell sooner. Why would you have been expected to look for it when you did not know it was missing? Indeed," he says, with warmth in his voice, "you all did well, and I am grateful." His right hand presses against his heart, and his head inclines slightly toward the group.
Of Flower: Alouryn and other pulchritudinous devotees of the goddess of love (Post 3 of 3) (ADM Kim)
Sunday January 18th, 2015 4:08:05 AM
About that time, from around the corner of the general store, dressed in silky dresses of yellow and gold, come dancing clerics of Flower. Each bears a short rod with long multicolored silks they weave in intricate flowing patterns as they sing. One girl, whom Hazel recognizes as Portia, skillfully plays a lute, as, plucking the strings, she also manages to tap out a lively rhythm.
The bell it went a missing
So answered 'venturers bold
"We'll find who took the chimer
Full wrought of lustrous gold"
And as we're reminiscing
The story as it's told
They stalked the trail blazers
Who dragged gold booty home
The giants, flames a-hissing
The thieves they paid their toll
When halflings, justice bringers
Reduced biguns to loam
And now we come a-kissing
These heroes of the Wold
Of golden bell the finders
Whose acts should be extolled
Faoil runs towards the group when they are fifty yards off, and excitedly circles Alouryn, occasionally leaping in the air trying to strike the passing silks with his nose.
