Zombies!

DM Kathy
Thursday January 8th, 2015 11:55:16 PM

Var moves over to listen at the other door. He doesn't hear anything.

Toston attempts to wake the man on the floor, as Ashley and Broom stand watch. Wilford isn't so sure this is a good idea, but he watches with the others.

The man on the floor sputters, moves, rolls over. "Hnnh? Wazzat?' he says. "Wazzat...who're you?"

Further conversation will have to wait, however. All of you hear sounds from outside the chapel--distinctive sounds of shuffling and groaning. The dead have returned to the cemetery.

We are in combat! Everybody please include your AC and hit points in your header, along with any active spells. Other information is nice, but not required.

Here is your map. You should be able to zoom in if you need to. Each of you has an avatar on the map, which I had to find by searching the interwebs. I had more success with some characters than with others. (By the way, searching for images of "gnomes" yields an inordinate number of Smurfs.) There is a key of sorts in the left margin, with a larger version of your avatars, with names under them.

The chapel is just off the map, in the upper left. The front wall of the chapel is on the map--it's the thick black line. The door is the somewhat thinner brown line. The gray tombstone-shaped things are tombstones.

You should be able to move your character. You should also be able to move other peoples' characters, because Google drive isn't all that sophisticated. Please only move your own character; be polite. The map squares are 5 feet; please count and know your character's speed. I've placed you in front of the chapel, but you actually have to move a little bit to get that far. Var was the farthest; he needs to move 15 feet to reach the door. Everybody else can move 10 feet to get to the door. The door is open, so you can continue your move out into the cemetery if you like. If you decide not to leave the chapel, pull your character into the left margin.

State in your post what you do, then make any rolls you need to make. Let me know if you have questions.

Ashley Steward [AC: 17, Touch: 10, Flat: 17, HP 13/13]  d20+1=16 ;
Friday January 9th, 2015 12:14:53 AM

Ashley watched the drunk sputter upon the floor, his boot lifting to deliver a sharp kick to the man's ribs to bring him to his senses. However, the boot never landed. Upon hearing the noises coming from the cemetery outside, Ashley turned abruptly, unsheathing his massive greatsword as he exited the chapel with haste. The smuggler didn't run, however. There was no point in sprinting out to close the distance with an enemy, just to have to wait for his allies to catch up. Instead, he moves at a brisk, normal pace for engaging hostile opponents, using the distance between himself and the zombies to look for anything remarkable about them that may yield an advantage.

Talanthrel moves to match Ashley's pace, his sword now held in a firm two handed grip. He is keeping a sharp eye out for one commanding the Undead (Perception 6 [d20+4])

"Stay here." Toston says to the man as he drops his water skin. (OOC:both free actions)

Toston then draws his kama (OOC: move action #1 as no BAB so he can't draw while moving )

Toston then follows the others out of the chapel, not being able to match their pace. (OOC: move action #2)

Toston first looks at the zombies for anything noteworthy and then scans the graveyard for other potential threats.

Var's ears pick up at the sounds of the restless dead outside the chapel, he turns away from the door and sees the two fighters already in motion towards the exit. Keeping pace with Ashely and Talanthrel (and doing his best to avoid stepping on Toston) he stops a few paces behind the two.

Raising his longbow he fires off a shot at the zombie directly down the line from him (OOC: Rain imposes a -4 to ranged attacks, right?) (ranged attack: 15 vs AC; 6 damage), striking it in it's soft, rotting chest.

Wilford Grimly (HP:10/10; AC: 14; Touch: 12; Flat: 12; CMD: 13)  d20+6=11 ;

Wilford noticed that the zombies mill around the center of the cemetery so he darts along the left flank to attempt to approach the undead band from behind. He moves twice as far as the others in an attempt to get behind them quickly. Once he stops, near a short tombstone, he arms himself with a dagger in each hand.

Surprised by the presence of the man on the floor, Avin has been a silent presence wavering outside the chapel. As the shuffling noise of the zombies reached his ears his own voice ceases as he peers out into the night by the steady light of the lantern.

Following closely on Toston's heels, a spell rises on the wizard's lips. Coiling magic into his fingers he reaches out. His hand hesitates a moment as he utters the draconic words of the spell. Shifting slightly he reaches over to Broom, gripping his signature weapon imbuing it with the strength of a Magic Weapon.

As the undead approach, Ashley and Talanthrel head out to meet the danger, drawing their weapons as they go. Toston is not far behind.

Var moves into position and fires a shot. It is a good shot, and clearly hits one of the zombies, but doesn't do as much damage as Var thinks it should.

Wilford, meanwhile, begins edging his way around his foes.

Broom moves next to Var. Avin moves over and casts a spell on Broom's weapon. [OOC: Magic Weapon is a touch spell, so you couldn't have cast it on Broom's weapon from where you were standing. I moved you this time; going forward, try to remember to move yourself.]

The zombies advance on Ashley and Talanthrel. Two of them were too far away and can only move this round. But two of the zombies attack! One slams its rotting fist into Ashley's face, striking for 5 damage! The other swings its rotting fist at Talanthrel, and misses horribly!

And here is your map.

Talanthrel (Paul) [HP 11/11; AC 16; Touch 13; Flat 13; Cmd16]  d20+3=7 ; d10+3=10 ;

Ashley feels the fist rock him for a moment, not having expected the force behind the blow as his nose bleeds profusely. The large fighter lets out a fearsome battlecry, roaring out his anger at his nose potentially being broken, swinging his greatsword in a wide arc towards the zombie that struck him.

(Attack Roll: 9, Damage: 13)

If his first attack hits, Ashley uses the momentum of the swing to strike the zombie adjacent to the one he has struck, the large sword in his hands sinking into rotting flesh and sinew.

Talanthrel takes a swing, but his blade goes whooshing over the zombie's head!

Broom's broom likewise swings wide of its target.

Var's arrow is a little better aimed, and strikes its target. As before, however, it doesn't seem to do a lot of damage.

Toston moves up and swings his kama! It hits! Gobbets of zombie flesh go flying. And, unlike Var's arrow, Toston's kama seems to do full damage.

Wilford attempts to sneak up on his opponents. [OOC: Matt, did you have to move more than 30 feet to get where you are? If not, you can go ahead and make an attack on that zombie. You flank with Ashley, so you get +2 to your attack roll, and you get to roll Sneak Attack damage if you hit. Let me know if you need help.]

Avin attampts to cast a spell, but it doesn't go well. [OOC: The target for Reduce Person is a humanoid creature. "Humanoid" is a specific creature type, and zombies have the undead creature type, not humanoid. So the zombie isn't a valid target for the spell. I wasn't able to find a definitive rule for what happens when you cast a spel at an invalid target, so I'm going to say that you lose the action, but don't lose the spell.] [OOC 2: Also, in case anybody is inclined to argue about it, undead are immune to any spell that requires a Fortitude save. So it wouldn't have worked anyway.]

Ashley takes a swing with his mighty sword, but it turns to the flat side at the last minute and glances off the zombie.

One of the zombies swings its rotting fists at Broom, but misses. Another goes after Ashley, but is unable to contend with the fighter's armor. Another attacks Toston, but the nimble gnome easily avoids it. The last zombie moves around the tombstone to attack Talanthrel, and hits! Its rotting fist does 8 points of damage to Talanthrel.

And here is your map.

Ashley felt the undead's claws scrabbling against the scales of his armor, frustrated that his blade glanced off of the zombie's flesh. He was growing frustrated, yet at the same time he could feel his heartrate starting to rise, his blood starting to grow hot in his veins. It had been too long since he had put out a good fight. Perhaps this is what he needed. Hearing Talanthrel cry out, Ashley yelled out to his companions while he brought his sword overhead for another swing at his undead assailant.

"Var, Avin! Cover Talanthrel!"

Var moves 15 feet and takes up position just on the other side of a tombstone. Hearing the bellows of Ashley Var angrily responds "These bloody beasts won't go down!"

Nocking another arrow, Var steadies his breath and focuses on the zombie attacking Talanthrel. A shot this close may not be difficult, but avoiding hitting an ally in combat is a complication that Var has not dealt with much. Drawing and releasing, the arrow strike true (22 vs AC; 8 damage), however, sinking an arrow into the zombie's shoulder.

The spell snaps back into Avin's mind, the mental momentum sending his thoughts reeling. Snarling, he clenches the force of the magic into a ball and sends it back out as a telekinetic fist towards the distant zombie (rolling 18 against the zombie's touch armor). Still disoriented the fist begins to unravel even as it trails out to undead but still holds 1 bludgeoning of strength. He staggers less than five feet forward even as he pulls out a dagger from its place at his waist.

OOC: Arguments are for people who don't like having fun. I wasn't sure if Avin had the knowledge of undead to make a better choice so he went ahead with it instead of bogging time.

Badly wounded, Talanthrel lashes out with his curved elven blade. This time, he connects, and zombie guts go flying. When he looks, the creature is lying on the ground, in two pieces, no longer a threat.

Frustrated, Ashley takes another swing at his opponent, but this time his greatsword swings clean over the creature's head. He calls for his companions to support Talanthrel, not realizing that the elven fighter has already accounted for his foe.

Var moves and fires a shot. It hits, and the arrow lodges securely in the zombie's undead flesh, but it still doesn't seem to be doing all the damage you expect. Toston's kama and Talanthrel's curved blade are carving up these creatures, but your arrows just don't seem to be doing as much damage.

Toston flurries with his kama. His second blow nicks the creature.

Broom flurries with his broom, but is not able to connect.

Wilford attemts to catch his opponent in a vulnerable place, but his blade fails to connect. [OOC: To attack, you first roll "to hit." It looks like you did that, with your 1d20+3. That's the correct number; you're +1 because of your Strength modifier, and +2 because you're flanking with Ashley, so your total bonus is +3. Unfortunately, you rolled low, so you weren't able to hit the zombie's armor class. You only roll damage if your "to hit" roll is successful. (You don't know the zombies' exact AC, but you can assume it's at least a 10.) If your "to hit" roll succeeds, you get to roll your dagger damage (1d4+1), pluse your sneak attack damage (1d6).]

Avin gathers his magic and sends it hurtling at one of the zombies. It hits, but does no damage. Your telekenetic fist seems to suffer from the same problem as Var's arrows; it doesn't do as much damage as it seems it should.

One zombie slams its rotting fist into Broom! Broom takes 5 damage! Another zombie attacks Ashley, and misses so badly it almost falls over. The third attacks Toston, and its foul undead fist connects! Toston takes 8 points of damage!

Broom flurries, but is unable to connect.

Ashely's frustration builds to a peak. With a roar, he swings his greatsword once again, and this time he connects. The zombie drops to the muddy ground. Trying for a "two-fer," Ashley keeps his sword moving--but Wilford is there just ahead of him. The rogue's dagger accounts for the last of the undead.

The rain is still falling, but not as hard as it was a few minutes ago. The rain, the wind, and your own labored breathing are the only sounds you hear. The battle is over.

[OOC: When Matt described Wilford as using "his daggers," but made only one attack roll, I took that for mere flavor. Matt, in terms of game mechanics, if you want to use both daggers and make two attack rolls, then yes, Hugh is correct, you would take a penalty because you're dividing your concentration. As long as it just flavor, though, and you're only rolling once "to hit," you don't need to take a penalty.]

The smuggler then sheated his blade, using his still damp cloak to wipe the blood from his face, touching his more than likely broken nose, noting its tenderness. He looked to the rest of the group, assessing how they had fared, noting that Talanthrel seemed to have the worst of it.

"We should go back to see if that drunkard is a priest. He'll owe us for ensuring he didn't get eaten in his stupor. "

When the others commented on what to do with the bodies, he simply shrugged. He wasn't studied in these matters, so he didn't care what happened to the corpses.

Avin urges Toston to go ahead and drink his potion.

Talanthrel peers about him, but sees nothing untoward. Well, nothing that your group hasn't noticed already.

Var wonders aloud whether to bury the bodies or burn them. Toston turns his thoughts to the question. You know the bodies can't just stay here and rot, but you also believe you probably have some time to work with. You probably don't have to dispose of the bodies right this minute, which is a good thing because it is still raining.

Wilford expresses a preference for burning the corpses, but even with oil, it will be a challenge in this wet weather.

Ashley suggests going to talk to the drunk man in the chapel. Perhaps he is a priest, and perhaps he can help with the party's wounds.

What would you like to do next?

Talanthrel nods back at the chapel "We might as well question that fellow. I think it is to well to burn these." He then peers closely at the graveyard. "Can anyone tell if any new graves were dug up?"

"Crap," Wil swears. "It's far to wet to burn anything. Do we really need to do anything to these stinking masses of blood and guts? If anything I guess we can dig a single grave and dump them in. I really don't want to do this." Afraid to leave the group vulnerable Wil leaves to find a shovel. He decides to dig up an already disturbed grave and dump the bodies into it.

Var hands his healing potion to Talanthrel, and then joins him in taking a look at the graveyard, specifically, if he can find evidence of recent foot traffic to or from the graveyard (Perception: 23)

"I think we should head back to the chapel and abstain from quaffing any potions until we figure out whether or not the man in there can help us. Also we have time to deal with the bodies, so we can either rebury them or wait for it to dry out a little and burn them. If we decide to bury them perhaps the chapel of Ffloy has a pick or shovel we could borrow though personally I think burning them would be best. I mean a necromancer can't reanimate a corpse if there is nothing to reanimate." Toston says and begins making his way back toward the chapel.

He keeps his eyes peeled for anything unusual as he walks back to it. (Perception 20)

Talanthrell hands the potion back to Var saying "Keep it. If we can't find healing in the chapel then give it to Toston. He looks more beat up then me." Smilling he then heads off to follow Toston to the chapel.

Avin Fellows HP:12/12 AC:13
Friday January 16th, 2015 6:32:33 PM

Avin kneels by the tattered remains whispering a silent prayer to Flower. Quietly, he attempts to align the bodies into some semblance of humanity as the others speak their part.

"No need to burn. Don't burn. Not here. Necromancer won't use these bodies again. Not these ones. Too many fresh bodies about. No need for these. Not these." Avin's voice shifts back to a mumble with his face twisted by remorse. His hands keep working with quiet desperation to make these victims look human (elf, orc, etc) once more.

Ashley Steward [AC: 17, Touch: 10, Flat: 17, HP 8/13]

Ashley listened to them discuss their options, being most agreeable to going back to the chapel. With nothing more than a grunt of approval, the large smuggler sheathes his sword and walks back towards the chapel, ignoring the chatter about what to do with the bodies. When he approaches the chapel's door, he peered in to see what had become of the awakened, inebriated occupant.
