DM Ken - Map So Far - Wisplight Fight Friday January 9th, 2015 11:47:52 AM
As Nikolais Fist get their bearings, a few things seem amiss.
One. Braugh is missing.
This seems to greatly upset Ziel, and others put their minds to work. For now, it's a mystery.
Two. This camp.
There is little in the way of barracks. A few tents are set up, but all of them are occupied with either personnel or gear.
Three. The robed men.
Their initial arguement is stopped by Tinkers proclamation, mostly in surprise that his group just emerged from the plant! William contacts them for a trade proposal, which they both immediately brush off.
Purple Robe: "We are not guano pinchers or traveling murderous adventurers. We are scholars of the Sages Guild, hired by your Mailed Fist to research and understand all the inner workings of this plant. We have no spells to trade you, but compliance is expected during our investigation. If you know something, you shall share it!"
Then enters Nikolai. He issues his bold proclamation, which draws immediate glares from the two sages. The bursar skitters over to him and whispers.
"It's true, we hired them. Or Constance did. Still, it's only recruits on guard duty here, and their respective thumbs. Your Fist holds operational command, and these guys are the rear end of mules. We will support any order you give."
Prudence doesn't have much luck. Asking around it becomes apparent this is less of a forward base and more of a watch-tower in progress. Creature comforts are few and far between, but perhaps if she was willing assert some authority, something might be done.
William, did have success with the pipes. If the possessor learns the proper tune, he can use these pipes to attract 1d3 rat swarms if rats are within 400 feet. For each 50-foot distance the rats have to travel, there is a 1-round delay. The piper must continue playing until the rats appear, and when they do so, the piper must make a DC 10 Perform (wind instruments) check. Success means that they obey the piper's telepathic commands so long as he continues to play. Failure indicates that they turn on the piper. If for any reason the piper ceases playing, the rats leave immediately. The Perform DC increases by +5 for each time the rats have been successfully called in a 24-hour period.
If the rats are under the control of another creature, add the HD of the controller to the Perform check DC. Once control is assumed, another check is required each round to maintain it if the other creature is actively seeking to reassert its control.
(Pipes of the sewers)
The Gnolls seem to understand their new predicament. The male waits silently while the female looks nervously around and sniffs the air before checking on her pups.

William sneers at the arrogant scholars who treated his earnest offer so rudely. He's in no mood now to share anything with them and turning to Nikolai, he waits for his commands.
He also asks his own fist if anyone is good at playing a wind instrument. If not, then he'll keep working with it, trying to discern the right tune to use. Of course they could sell it and use the proceeds but rat swarms could be useful in the future...
( Dm, let me know the right roll to make to discern what tune I should play on the pipes... or was my previous roll good enough?)
DM Ken Your roll of 30 was plenty fine. I just quoted the text from the item.

A little discouraged, Pru returns to where the scholars are studying the tree.
"Well," she says, "what are you trying to find out? We have traveled through these trees, and might be able to answer your questions. Our gnoll captives might be able to answer some questions, too. Surely that's preferable to spilling blood?"

Ziel takes the hand crossbow and uncocks it, then promptly responds to the purplish-robed. "You may call me Checker. I am a private investigator." He grins to the scholars. "Actually I do know some things that may help you, but, as the Mailed Fist hired me for another reason, I don't have the urge to share it. In fact, I may do better as a control for what you research instead of simply a ladder." The Drow walks by, approaching the Gnolls, then returns to the robed men. "Though I may share an advice with your men: The cypress is somewhat dangerous and these Gnolls deserted fearing their own kin would mess with the blood offering. We even lost our finest fighter because of it. You see, it's pretty dangerous when done by the wrong person, so please avoid bringing disaster upon this camp. Thank you."

Tinker takes strength from the bursar words and Nikolai's proclamation. The stoic dward has never learned nor noticed the verbal niceties of situations, preferring the unchanging puzzles of a lock or trap. Still, he knows when someone is looking down on him and his battle-mates, and pushes a grubby finger into Purple Robe's purple robes.
"One. The Mailed Fist hired you not the other way around. "
The finger pokes the man again.
"Two. This fist is in charge here so Sergeant Nikolai gives the orders around here. "
Another poke.
"Three. Every recruit is an investment of three years of training and a resource of the Fist that is our sole source of livelihood. A mercenary who throws away his people is like a sage that throws away his mind; only worth spitting down their throat. Now, you need to get your mind back in your head or...
I start saving up spit."
He turns to the bursar. "Is there a sergeant here to take charge while we report to the Captain, or is there a messenger service established to send her word?"
Then he slaps his head with the heel of his hand, turning to his battle-mates. "We have that sending scroll! Why don't we send the report and keep order here until contact?"
Nikolai (JonathanT) AC 20 Tch 20 Ffted 17 HP 33/38 CMD 20/22(Grapple) Sunday January 11th, 2015 11:34:55 PM 'Oh, great!' Nikolai thinks. 'I'm in charge here? I don't have time for this!'
So, for some reason, Captain Constance sent some paid mage researchers, not Mailed Fist mages, and some recruits, to keep watch and study the Blood Cypress tree, and, for some reason, expected Nikolai's fist to return and run the show.
"All right, if take charge I must, I'll take charge." he answers the bursar and turns on his heels and marches over to the mages.
"So you plan to execute your research by shedding someone else's blood? Tsk, tsk. You can only truly learn anything by shedding your own blood. Anything else is pure laziness, or cowardice. But for now, no one goes. We just left a horde of gnolls on the other side and I doubt you are prepared to fight them. I need every man here working on these defenses and going week for loss of blood."
He turns to the men standing around, "Well? Don't just stand here, get to work on those defenses! Who's your Thumb? Send him to me immediately! Now SNAP TO IT!"
He turns to his own Fist and takes them aside. "We can't stay here and get embroiled in this mess. First thing is to make sure their Thumb knows not to use the Blood Cypress until I say so. Next we contact Captain Constance and give our report. I hope to get approval to move out and leave the highest ranking Thumb in charge, not me. In the meantime, stay away from the two sages. We'll give them the information we have, but I want some leverage so let's keep what we know a mystery for now."
After Nikolai talks to the Thumb(s) stationed here, he will contact Cpt. Constance. (next post)
Effectively humbled, the scholars grumble but back off. The Black Robe mentions something about speaking to Constance about this rude reception when they were hired for their expertise, but he doesn't say it with any real force.
The Purple lingers a moment, but considers his surroundings and retreats as well, but not before "humph"ing at Tinker and making a show about wiping off the spots where Tinker poked him, whether or not any dirt is there.
The recruits give a whoop and a cheer at your diplomatic victory, then quickly disperse to help others with the building of the watch-fort.
The clerk, who is very busy, offers your group his tent for as long as you need it while he gathers the other thumbs. You have all the privacy you would need for your sending spell.

Nikolai is content at the results so far, and makes a mental note to talk further with the two sages before they leave, if they can leave. To his Fist, he comments "Those sages need to understand these trees are not toys."
Nikolai thanks the clerk with sincerity for the use of the tent and once the Fist is inside, including the gnolls, (can't afford to leave them outside alone), uses the scroll to contact Captain Constance.
"Nikolai's Fist reporting, Sir! We have captured a gnoll leader, part of our orders, including a gnoll female outcast. In lieu of dragging them around and risking the gnoll pack leader's escape, we cut short the reconnaissance mission to hand deliver the gnoll pack leader ourselves. However, once we made it back to our original point of departure, we encountered a makeshift fort and two sages that were hired by the Mailed Fist to study the Bloodroot Cypress tree. I was told that I was in charge now that I'm here, but we need to deliver the captives to you and I don't trust them in the hands of any other Fist. I need permission to hand over command to a Thumb you trust so we can continue our mission. There is another reason justifying our return to the Citadel but I can't discuss it here."

Tinker doesn't pursue the confrontation; the sages backed off so the right effect happened, and Tinker doesn't catch the implied diss of the purple robed sage.
Nikolai has the sending well in hand, so Tinker slips out of he tent to help around the fort; he has some expertise in engineering. Catching Nikolai's eye, he moves to the Blood Cypress to see what trouble he and Michael can do.
"Loose morals? Pretty funny", Tinker smiles to the Halfling. "Maybe some mercenaries, but the Iron Fist has very stringent set of morals, and I dont play fAst and loose with what is right."
"Of course, setting up some traps around the Blood Cypress has nothing to do with morals and everything with good common sense. "
Grabbing some recruits and Michael, Tinker designs and then drects the building of a nasty surprise from 5 to 15 feet around the Cypress. A series of caltrops, swine feathers, trip wires, and gopher holes will make it difficult for any arrivals to move quickly while still keeping good fields of fire on any enemy.

DM Ken - Map So Far Tuesday January 13th, 2015 2:10:34 PM
Around the camp, Tinker and Ziel go about their tricky business, setting up caltrops and spike traps while recruits dig gopher holes.
William spends his time with the captives, particularly the female. She doesn't say much, just short one word answers to his questions. She fills in the gaps of Ekidu (the previously set-loose gnoll) description of their society here and there.
The Gnoll presence in the south is nothing compared to the thousands of thousands of Gnolls to the north. The main threat to the tribe is itself, as food is running scarce. Many females find themselves being blamed for unwanted pups, and many have began trying to find places to migrate for safety.
"I too left for this reason. I brought a daughter to have many pups. I brought two males to mate her. They shall have their own tribe, and I shall be den-mother. I shall have food and fire and be fat and old."
Nikolai crafts the sending spell from the scroll, and his message is started. The magic ends suddenly however, after "dragging them around." It isn't much longer when the response comes from the sending.
"Report home. Message cut early. Assumed Pru, Linden or William would have explained a sending spell! 25 words or less. Simple concept really."

Nikolai shrugs, 'How am I supposed to remember all these details?' "Sorry Fist. I forgot that these Sending spells have a limited duration. But no matter, I got the answer I wanted. We are to report back to the Citadel. I'd like to leave immediately but I need to make sure things are in order here first. I'm going to have a talk with the three Thumbs stationed here, then I'm going to have a talk to the two sages. Meanwhile I need two of you to gather up some supplies for us, I'm tire of eating snake and leeches. Tinker and Pru can gather up enough food for our trip. Zieluvit and Michael, we have our horses in that corral over there. Our tack should be there too. Make sure our saddles and other riding gear is in order and ready for tomorrow morning. William, stick with the gnolls. I'll be back as soon as I can to help."
Nikolai then seeks out the three Thumbs and has a private meeting with them. He looks for character traits that indicate the best one to take charge of the defenses and handle the two sages as he talks. Sense Motive (?) +7 = 12
He greets the Thumbs and goes on to explain, "I'm going to pick one of you to take charge of the fort and its defenses. I must have all of your cooperation in this," and he goes on to explain what lies on the side of the teleport, the gnolls, how many there are, and that they gnolls know that we used to the tree to escape. "That means they could come after us and if you are unprepared, or asleep, you'll be dead. So, your priority is to finish these defenses. Don't let them trick you in using your blood for their experiments. Got that?" He then picks a Thumb he judges is more experienced in handling soldiers and defenses to take charge.
Next comes the meeting with the two sages. "I completely understand your frustrations. We certainly need to know how these trees work. However, there is a time for experimentation and study, and this isn't it. The gnolls use this very tree to bring in their raiding parties and we've stirred up a hornets nest by capturing one of their top leaders. They could be swarming through here any day. So I encourage you two to help the Fists to get these defenses ready for an attack. If they come, it will be by the dozens if not tens of dozens. Once the Thumbs have verified the defenses are ready and no attack has occurred, you may start your experiments. I highly suggest capturing some hapless critter for the blood the tree requires and not a Fist member. They have their orders to keep you safe, not drain their strength needlessly. If you need one to hunt a deer or rabbit, you have my permission for that, but not human blood."
Nikolai waits for their word that they understood him and will abide by his orders. Once that is done he returns to his own Fist to check on their progress.

Nikolai goes through his deliberations on the Thumbs, and of the three finds that one in particular reminds him of Trimmack, an older soldier who seems to prefer training recruits to leading squads. He alone seems to grasp the risk.
There is another too, who seems easy with talk and able to smooth wrinkles and ruffles. He is placed as the liaison to the Sage Guild representatives.
Michael and Tinker wrap up trap training, something which Michael is very excited about. The small halfling dresses down men not that much his junior, but no one protests in light of the fact he just emerged from several weeks in the swamp.
Prudence and William swap looks of "oops", but don't seem too torn up about the minor issue.
Nikolai sets his ground-rules with the Sages, who seem willing to listen once the concept of danger is fully explained. The Black Robes even helps out, putting his mind to some extra defenses that use more brain than brawn in implementation.

With everything secure, from the gnolls to the rations for their trip, they start their trip back home.
Tinker suggests stopping at Hornfowl to rest through the night. "That does sound tempting but I'm not so sure Hornfowl would approve of the gnolls we bring. The group makes a somber ride, skirting past the edges of Hornfowl via the roads in place. Travel here is easy, and like Nikolai says, at least it's dry.
The following weeks of travel flow by easily. First they head north-east, catching the main road to the west that leads them through cheerful stay. From there they travel east, then they follow the Peaceblossom River until it branches into the slower flowing Phosy River.
From there is a trek south-east through the plains until they come to the city of Rhaedel. From there they travel the roads south to Ham City and on through to God City, where they make a final turn east and coast home, arriving at the Citadel several hours away from Wedding City.
As they ride back they are flanked from time to time by friendly riders and fellow members of the Fist. At one point, a pair of scouts turn and ride hard for home, presumably to deliver the report to Constance that you are nearing home.
As your mounts carry you through the large iron gates and past the thick iron reinforced walls, you breathe a sigh of relief. Sgt. Trammack approaches with a smile, it seems he's been waiting.

Tinker is happy with the slow pace home, it allows cleaning and minor repairs on equipment that anyone can do with a needle, thread, and patience. Even though the team takes weeks to get home, with hard bedrolls and dried rations, at least it is both safe and dry.
At night around the crackling fire, his eyes chase phantoms around the flames, and the dwarf tries to make a genealogy chant about the Agents.
Bliss and raven, Mookie by name Wits and bow and tiny his frame. Cameron, dwarf friend, leader, bard Team conscience, battle mate ward. Carver centaur, lance shining bright Wererat bane, running his delight. Linden once-dead, brought Flower's peace Ally's shield, desired conflict's cease. Braugh, dwarf, tough, armored, free Lost from knowledge through Blood Cypress tree.
Tinker shakes his head, a dwarf with no knowledge of dwarf custom is hardly one to make a fitting tale. He mumbles down to silence each night.
Once at the Citadel, he nearly grins at seeing Sergeant Trimmak, and nods at the expected summons to the Captain. So much so that Trimmack's question startles him. "I last saw him in the swamp being chased by three will-o-wisps as fast as a centaur could go. Never caught back up with us and there was no opportunity to look for his body with multiple war parties after us and our prisoners. "
Tinker doesn't want to dwell on it, and makes ready to report.
Once they arrive back to camp, he helps relay what happened to their missing fist mate. He knows it may not be received well, but he tries to be as positive as possible...

Nikolai keeps everyone on his or her toes during the trip home. Even though the way is much safer than what they had been experiencing, it was unprofessional to get lax. Fortunately the trip back was uneventful. He ponders whether the Captain will keep him as Thumb or appoint another for their next job. He had been under the impression that his appointment had been temporary and would rotate to the others as time went on.
Finally, entering the familiar grounds of the Citadel, Nikolai can relax a bit, but only for a bit, for immediately Sergeant Trammack greets them. 'Two hours. Only two hours more...'
Nikolai explains to Sgt. Trammack the prisoner and the female gnoll. He gets the sergeants word that the female gnoll would be well taken care of, that she was not a prisoner, but watched carefully so as not to escape.
With those assurances he dismisses the Fist to meet back at the center court in 1.5 hours for their meeting with Captain Constance. He shows the newcomers their barracks and suggests everyone get cleaned up for their meeting. To Zieluvit, he says this will be his opportunity to inquire into the Mailed Fist and decide if he wants to join or not.
He hands over the horses to a stable hand for care and then proceeds to get himself cleaned up and ready for their meeting. An hour and a half later he is in the courtyard ready to go meet with the Captain.

Michael is glad to see the Citadel again, Being assigned to this new team he goes ahead and moves his meager belongings to their barracks. Before all of that he see to his Mule, after being on the road for weeks with her, he has grown to know her well. She is a sweet tempered beast, once he was able to get past her mischievous streak. He calls her Daisy, and he makes sure she's well taken care of. He then makes himself presentable, shave, bath and then laying his dress uniform out. he works on what he believes his captain will ask of him when he reports to the Captain, should he be called upon. 1. Wisp presence in the area, Wisp/gnoll collusiovn 2. Care and Feeding of Gnoll pups 3. Bloodroot Cypress 4. what happened to Linden 5. what happened to Braugh.
the last two items on his list give him pause. Such bravery, Such selflessness. These things strike to the heart of his quandry, they make no sense. nothing makes sense...Darn them...DARN THEM!
As the tears begin to well up into his eyes he pulls the blanket on his bed over his head and lets the tears carry his sorrow up to the gods.

2 hours pass, and Nikolais Fist gathers near the increasingly familiar hallway that leads to the Knight Captain's quarters.
After a few moments, they are called inside.
The room is large, but cluttered with scrolls and maps tacked over the walls. Several have been taken down since last visit, and several are brand new.
Constance Palance is a pretty woman. Her almond colored eyes are sharp, as are the rest of her facial features. Her long blond hair is pulled into a tight pony-tail, and even in her office she is lightly armored and her sword is kept near.
As is her habit, she stands with her back to you, looking through her window at the training grounds below.
"Nikolai's Fist, you were assigned to provide me with a rough head count, information on their leadership structure, their general equipment capabilities, magic at their disposal, and a rough map of their general area."
Turning around, she frowns.
"Additionally, where is Linden and why is that drow in my office? Speak freely."
William the Courageous (Ken) AC 18, hp 30/30 Saturday January 17th, 2015 2:05:57 PM

"Linden--" Pru chokes a little, but continues. "We were separated from Linden. We don't know where he is. I--" she looks around at the rest of her Fist. "I'm not sure he's going to make it out of there," she concludes miserably.
"In terms of magic," she continues, "they have a few casters who seem to cast divine magic. I guess we could call them shamans. They don't seem to have much in the way of arcane casters, though they were able to figure out how to use the blood vines to get around."

when it seems prudent to do so, Michael tells of the Will-o-wisps and their collusion with the Gnolls. He also tells of Linden leading the Will-o-Wisps off to give the party time to escape, he details the Leader Gnolls obvious Hostility to the female they picked up and how they had to keep them sepereated, he even shows the harnesses he rigged up to carry the pups. He discusses what he knows of the bloodroot cypress, including their obvious utility in logistical matters, and also how Braugh went missing feeding the one they used to get back.

Ziel tries to think of a decent presentation, but all he comes with is: "Knight Captain Constance Palance, Zieluviet Iezerth - private investigator and craftsman - salutes you. I was hired through my business name Checker to deliver you this package. I'm not sure if you were expecting it, but here it is." Then extends the sealed envelope to Cap. Palance.
As Zieluviet looks her in the eyes, her appearance and costumes reminds him of what he believes the Drow Below, as overly-focused people, to be. "Could look death in the eyes. Killing because it's the easy way? No. Palance is different from them, yet Vynghol does not shoots for people like her. Eyes of cold. No will to kill, but no regrets either. Take her head on if ever needed. Interesting, however. Palance may be helpful. I'm placing my bet."
The Drow feels an urge to learn more from her. "Some words, if I may: My contractor also 'challenged' me to join the Mailed Fist, though I have objections in matters of working for a mercenary organization. I would be pleased if the Captain could clear matters as the position of the Mailed Fist regarding military violence. As you can see, I spite the claim of responsibility most mercenaries make for themselves. If you are interested in my arguments, I may explain them with your permission."

Tinker sees William provided the map and Michael provided good information on Linden and Braugh. The dwarf puts in his own two cents on the five South Swamp lairs being war/raiding camps and the main gnoll strength is reported to be thousands in the great northern swamps. From personal experience, he describes the gnoll spellcasters enjoying fire spells and how they used them both in battle and as traps to cover their retreat.
The drow, however, makes Tinker wince. The elf has proven useful and companionable enough if slightly odd, and Tinker hasn't yet got his head around where he is coming from, but standing in the Captain's office of the Citadel and challenging HER to justify her actions? That's crazy! He hopes CPT Palance takes it as audacity and not dismiss the elf as not worth ... well, anything!
"Pardon, Captain Palance", Tinker interjects, "but Z here helped us out of a sticky spot with the Wisps. And then he stayed with us, protecting the prisoners and helping fulfill our mission."
Nikolai (JonathanT) AC 20 Tch 20 Ffted 17 HP 38/38 CMD 20/22(Grapple) Sunday January 18th, 2015 10:20:40 PM
Nikolai's friends take the initiative and open up the report giving. The Thumb then chimes in. "The swamp is a marvelous place to meet new friends and new creatures. You'd not believe we could make friends with these pygmy vegetable creatures who hate the gnolls and helped us out. And then out of the blue we meet Zieluvit, a drow as you noticed, who helped us defeat the gnolls in our last battle. Which brings up the Will o' Wisps. They were more intelligent than we thought. We tried ignoring them but they enticed the gnolls into attacking us to sap our life force. We were whupping up on the gnolls pretty good but the Will o' Wisps did not seem to have enough. They wanted us to kill our gnoll leader captive but we had our orders to bring one alive to you. I guess Linden felt overwhelmed by the futility of it all and enticed three of the Whisps to follow him. Right after that we met with Gargul. Or rather Gargul met with us. See Tinker had taken horrible wounds and we were cut off from him so he 'died'.
Anyway, when Gargul released us with Tinker back with us, we had no way to know how long we'd been 'gone', so to speak, and there was no sign of gnolls or Linden. We had to trust that he knew the way back to the Bloodroot Cypress tree. Otherwise, looking for him could stir up the Will o' Wisps or gnolls again.
In that, I guess I failed. I make no excuses. Nor were we able to map out all the gnoll warrens. Having a gnoll prison in tow, and then picking up the female gnoll, made it to hazardous to continue, considering our diminished numbers."
He then places the magic greatsword on her desk. "They have magical weapons and have command of magical spells, although at what power we aren't sure. They do have a command of trained hyenas that are vicious in combat and great trackers, even in the swamps."
DM Ken - Map So Far Monday January 19th, 2015 1:27:39 PM
Palance listens quietly without much at the reports from Nikolais Fist. She makes some quick notes, asking them to slow down when magical capabilities are discussed. When everything is notated, she looks up and sighs.
"Good work. You made the right call. Thanks to the markers you mentioned in the swamps, Carren or some of our other scouts can probably find the last missing warren. The numbers are concerning, but they sound like a society on verge of collapse.
Either way, we needed to know about them, and now we do."
She takes a moment to look over the great sword, then pushes it back to Nikolai, assuming he is going to turn it in to the Quartermasters as usual.
"The Fist did well. Very well. You got us everything we asked for, right down to one of their leadership figures. You even nabbed a civilian who has no reason to lie. She will be treated fairly, but we can't just release her into the countryside. She may not be a warrior, but she's strong enough to kill a farmer or merchant easily. I'll ask command what they advise we do when we learned all we can from her."
Zieluviet Iezerth's letter still remains unopened. Constance finally takes the time to open it, smiling almost immediately when she sees it's author. She finishes the letter and folds it, placing it in a small chest full of other letters.
"Zieluviet Iezerth, I am not interested in your arguments or your position on pretty much anything. I am interested in the fact that you have successfully completed a number of one-time contracts for the Fist, apparently while maintaining whatever morale code you possess. You also have, according to your sponsor.."A flair for ranged combat and an uncanny skill with the bow....". "
She thinks a moment.
"Your sponsor has also recommended that your recruitment be considered served. A large part of our long recruitment in the Fist is to weed out common thugs, murderers, and thieves who would harm our reputation. Your sponsor insists that you meticulously question assignments and does not think this will be an issue with you."
Constance begins penning a request while she talks.
"Nikolai's Fist has personnel constantly in flux it seems. Cameron and Carver have left. Cameron filed to leave according to a change in religious beliefs that would leave him unable to perform his duties to the fullest of his abilities. Something about chasing down people who wronged him. Carver refused to let him leave alone, so they bought their contracts out with their magical gear and left as soon as Carver recovered.
Linden is another matter. He is to be presumed dead. Braugh will be counted as missing until we have a reason to believe otherwise."
She finishes her letter and looks up at Zel.
"So, Mr. Iezerth it seems that Nikolai again is in need of personnel. I would just as assume use you for this need as I would take the time to scout a replacement from someone elses Fist. If Nikolai will have you, then so will we. The choice is yours. If you would like to be a part of the most respected, not feared, military in the Wold, then take this letter of indoctrination to our quartermaster, Qualtmie. The others can show you the way. If not, let me know so I can write a thumb-nose letter to my sister Raven, and you can give it to her next time you sub-contract a job from her in whatever run-down inn you found her."
Constance hands the letter of indoctrination to Prudence, then leans back into her chair.
"Show him to either the gates or the quartermaster, whichever he desires. You all have three days of leave as I pull some things together. Pay is waiting with Qualtmie, as well as a small bonus. Finding the Pygmies was a great discovery. They could be very useful. And thanks to your initial report, we have authorized the building of a small gated keep there to watch the plants. We also hired some sages to research them. Wizards are expensive, and we don't have enough to spare as botanists.
As usual for agents, the loot is yours to keep or trade into the quartermaster. Agents get better pay and loot rights, we find it helps people stay in the job.
Spend your money well. There's some news about those pesky dire-rats we had to deal with not long ago. I'm waiting for a friend to return before I lay out something solid. Any questions from your lot?"
When the Fist have asked their questions, she relents a little.
"Zieluviet, I'll let you ask me one question, if it helps settle your mind. Make it a good one."

Outside of Constance's office, the Fist meets in discussion. Most if the Fist all encourage Zel to stay, pointing out that in his brief time with them, he's earned their trust. Taking their requests for camaraderie to heart, he follows Prudence to Qualtmies office to begin the arduous task of signing a Mailed Fist contract.
Perhaps here, he finds a bit more assurance that he is not signing up for what would amount to be a band of brigands.

While Zel signs papers, Prudence does a little thinking. She recalls a moment from their briefing after last encounter with rats... were-rats. Constance had said then that from that day forward, no mention of the enemy being were-rats would be made, in an attempt to keep it a secret that the lycanthropes had been discovered.
While Pru thinks on the matter, she becomes aware of someone watching her. "I have to say... At first, I thought the time here in the Citadel would be hard and stressful, but Captain Palance carved a great difference between ordinary mercenaries and you. Sincerely, I thought you were a group of somewhat naive errants in the wrong organization. I ask for your apologies for this matter. I mean, the people I lived with would kill 'for the greater good', but this 'greater good' can be ignorance or just some gold. These people were mercenaries. They could be telling jokes, laughing, or talking about their lives yesterday, but then they had a contract... values were soon to be forgotten."
"Yes, I spite them. Yet some called me a mercenary, for this I'd prefer the term private investigator. I took mostly search and retrieval jobs or sentinel-for-hire, so I may be the least mercenary of the mercenaries as I never accepted a request of assassination. Well, I had to kill in the past, but it wasn't supposed to happen."
"And this is Vynghol. I've carved and painted a behir in the handle and limbs, as you can see. I have never seen one live, but once in ruins of my kin, I found reliefs in walls depicting them and made it out alive thanks to some behir tunnel. Oh, right, I was hunted by some Drows there. They aren't my people, but are my kin, yet, strangely, Drows from below have some hatred for us. Unfortunately, it's reciprocal. I was raised in a village with even a statue of Jancassis, but vengeance is such a waste. In my oppinion, whoever devotes a life for revenge is just following a selfish illusion of justice. That's another reason for why I despise mercenaries. The claim of justice..."
"Back to Vynghol, I exercised all my knowledge when making it. See the end of the limb, here with the string, this knot in the wood, where the composite ends... it's a dampener. Together with the rest from the handle, they improve the arrow stability after the release, less likely to miss the line. It may take some training with Vynghol to notice the difference, but it's a fact."
"It's been a lot of meaningless talk. All I should tell you now is about my ehmm... I have some disturbance within my dreams. I usually find myself within the caves left by my people. Sometimes they are really disturbing, as if I could feel agony and terror without a subject. Sometimes they're just annoyances but That Gargul appearance back in the swamp said I should listen more to such thoughts."
"So, to sum it all, Vynghol and I are willing to offer our help. I was ready to whine at first, but Captain Palance made me reconsider. Still, there are some things I won't let slip by."
After the presentation, Ziel sighs. He is still worried about what he just got himself into. Most thoughts are on Captain Palance, as he can't decide of a good question to ask her.

Kaylee smiles shyly at Prudence.
"Um. Hello. I wasn't trying to be creepy or anything, I just saw you there and thought I'd draw a picture. I hope Qualtmie doesn't mind the scribbles. If she says something to Helmbane, he's gonna kill me. How have you been?"
Prudence notices something else. Kaylee is in a Mailed Fist recruits uniform, complete with wooden weapons. A wooden dagger in on her hip, and a wooden spear on her back.
And if a wager had to be made, Pru could safely bet that the girls hair is modeled after her own.
"Next."
Kaylee jumps and shifts a little towards the quartermaster, who takes the requisition with a roll of her eyes.

Michael finishes his study and catalogs what he's learned about the Will o Wisps, which is that they are intelligent, evil, and consider themselves predators of nearly all the noble and ignoble races.
The odds that they were colluding with the Gnolls is fairly slim, given the descriptions he's found of the creatures. Unfortunately, he just doesn't know enough about them (or other aberrations) to infer anything else from the behaviors he observed. In contacting the authors of the three books they were referenced in, he is disheartened to discover that they are often individually acquired bits of knowledge, cataloged in larger volumes on monsters, mostly without credits given to the researchers and contributors.
Only one lead is found, in a book titled "The Woldian Survival Guide: Monsters of Magic.", penned by Cazador de Monstruos of the Sages Guild.
Concerning the creatures remains, Michael is dejected to find that after so many days travel, it is little more than sticky foam. ---------------------
Williams apprentice seems a mix of emotions. He is happy to see William home, but sad that he has nothing to report on his studies.
"I never have time for any magic study sir. All day all the time it's nothin' but muckin' horse poo for me. I still can cast the cantrip father showed me, but that took me 4 years to learn."
The boy shows William his light cantrip again, struggling with effort.
"But it's gettin harder to do that sir. I don't remember all the exercises dad taught me, and I'm not learning nothing new in the stables. Maybe you could help me?"

Later that evening, the group all meet up at The Last Assignment" and Zel takes a moment before their discussions begin to share something of his past with the others. It's a heavy bit of information, but the Drow seems relieved to share it.
Tinker and Nikolai seem to have plans concerning their upcoming assignment to share with the others.

After the Last Assignment, Tinker admires the flind trophy in the barracks. He starts the meeting of the Agents off by telling the story of finding the contraband stash and secret lair in the Citadel itself, and the fight with the wererats. Then shows a Michael and Zel his silvered spear point end of his Urgosh. "I'll be ready to hunt them down.

Pru notes the hairstyle, but attaches no significance to it. A single braid down the back is not in any way a unique hairstyle.
"You've joined up, I see!" she says, gesturing to Kaylee's uniform. "The training is really hard, but don't get discouraged. I know you can do it!"
That afternoon, at long last, she gets her bath, and is able to scrub the swamp away. She even washes her hair, which was perhaps not a good move as it takes hours to dry. She combs it patiently, wishing that Prestidigitation worked on hair as well as clothing. It's still pretty wet when she braids it to head to the Last Assignment. She orders an ale and joins her Fist-mates.

William nods as he listens to his understudy and says, "Yes, let me see what I can do... I'll check with the local branch of the mage's guild and see about getting you enrolled. I'll cover your costs for studying, as I like to invest in people with promise and a desire to better themselves."
Later that day he'll check with the guild and use some of his prestige or influence as being part of one of the top fists to get the young man enrolled. If needed, he'll ask his sergeant or officers for help for the boy, promising to cover his costs for enrollment, etc. He's too smart to be cleaning horse stalls and with some training and practice, the boy could turn into a good mage. Furthermore, the Mailed Fist could always use more skilled mages and the boy would be a good one for the future...
Finally, he enjoys some time with the others at the Last Assignment, catching up on their plans...

Nikolai takes the opportunity, after Zieluvit shares about his background, to inform Zie the Contract process the Mailed Fist uses when taking on an assignment. "It is a very tedious process. The Mailed Fist want to make sure the request is legit and NOT something like a vendeta or revenge thing. Like the contract the town of Hornfowl made to hire the Mailed Fist to protect them from the marauding gnolls."

Zieluviet finds the current ambiance to be uncomfortable. He orders nothing and barely signals his exit.
As the Citadel is still news for him, the Drow tries to get himself a tour as the night passes. Ziel does not plan to stop until he's barred by someone or the place has looks of regrettable consequences for trespassers.
Walking by the pathways and halls of accessible buildings, Ziel soon gets curious to know what kind of burial grounds the Citadel has. Or what kinds of monuments to past heroes. The legacy and honored names of those who are reminded for they feats... To know it is to know what the Fist regards as a model and example of virtues.
"Their records! They may have accounted the dishonourable. Know how often it happens. Know who I'm dealing with!"
Later, Zieluviet plans to learn the number recent of deserters, murderers and such who were within the Fist. Also, Ziel's superiors in command are of great interest. His objective is to trace a chain of command so he can know from the highest position as possible from who his orders will come from.

Nikolai seems confident enough about the Fists policy. He's not someone to be fooled by a malicious lead, but it's a matter that requires caution.
"You give me hope. My ideals tell me that this organization shouldn't exist. But reality isn't as simple as that. Maybe by siding with you the closest to what I believe in can be achieved. Even the voices haven't told me if this is a mistake, so I'm trusting the instincts."
The words given to Nikolai before Zieluviet left the Last Assignment were recalled at the end of the walk. The Drow gets upset with himself. They're still strangers and Ziel is afraid he's became too soft after making it out of the swamp. Or is it Palance? Anyway, he is very upset with his attitude here.

Tinker frowns a little, and adds to what Nikolai said. "Being careful, yes, but once a contract is signed, we are supposed to do that contract and no more, to the inch. We have gotten in trouble before by wanting or trying to do more than the contract allows, to helping when an immediate help was needed. "
Tinker pauses to let that sink in before giving the good news. "Which is why I am pleased to be an Agent and no longer a Specialist Fist. As Agents, we have more leeway in how we complete a contract. And since we will normally on our own, we can help those who need help. And if questioned, it is for the good of the Fist."
Another pause, and the dwarf's face hardens. "And if I still get in trouble, so be it. I will never not help when help is needed to place my body between a hearth and war's desolation. "

The meeting at the last assignment kicks off well, with everyone having something to contribute to the conversation and discussion.
The need for silvered weapons is discussed lightly, as well as the Fists brief but storied repertoire of completed assignments.
Zel is the first to leave, taking some time to escape the confines of the Last Assignment. After Prudence arrives and shares her good news, the crew get to relax in relative peace for the first time in a very long time.
Morning comes, and with it some surprises. A message had been placed into the Fists mail slot throughout the night.
In regards to the recent absence of Braugh Stormbringer, I am pleased to inform you that his status has been changed from Missing in Action to Serving Abroad. It would seem that a certain Deity with whom you have been in contact lately has decided that Braugh would be better off serving in one of our outposts located in The Scab.
Usually, I don't believe a soldier when he tells me a god made him do it, but in this case considering your newfound on and off again relationship with the god of death, I do. He reports hearing Gimp the Imp shortly after teleporting through the Bloodroot, and being told to find a duty station in The Scab, where he is needed.
Braugh should be considered for all purposes removed from your Fist.

Word that Captain Palance left a note spreads like wildfire and the message sends a sigh of relief through Nikolai. 'I felt there was something to weird about Bruagh disappearing like that.' and turns over for another half hour sleep.
But hunger strikes soon and he is up and at the mess hall for a late brunch. He has the magic sword with him and he soon is at the Quartermasters to do some trading. "Good morning, Qualtmie," he booms cheerfully. He then enters the Catacombs.

Outside, Zieluviet awaits. Sundark Goggles on, he seems to be enjoying the morning routine of the Fists personnel. The plan is to resupply as soon as possible his load of caltrops. Some flammable oil would be nice too. The whole archery gear is maintained systematically and the chance of a careful inspection revealed no splinters or cracks or ruptures. Vynghol, however, could be polished to give the behir carving a better appearance to impress someone (It's eyes are made of amber stones).
When faced, the Drow states that he had a tranquil night. It seems he just found something he had been looking for. Or found a way to find it soon. Nevertheless, he's quite different from last night in the pub.
At the break, Ziel calls William. "Pardon me for the interrupt, William, but I just noticed your ability for crafting. Well, I'm not a skilled arcanist as you (I can cast only some traditional lesser spells of my kin), but please accept my help should you come to any project. My knowledge of the arcane may not be practical, but I might be able to even help you bind enchantments." Ziel settles, thinks for a while, then grins. "All I can guarantee is: should you ever need a quality bow, my work is unrivaled. (Alright, I've seen some as good as mine, but I'm always working on it!)"
DM Ken - Map So Far Friday January 23rd, 2015 12:05:12 PM
Williams finds that there is little in the way of an organized mages guild anywhere nearby. The closest Star Mage tower is in Isumbre, which is straight north across Defiles channel. The Fist itself does not actually train wizards, but will recruit those who show sufficient levels of talent. It would seem that sending the boy away is the most likely scenario, that or taking the time to create a lesson plan himself.
Zel tries to talk trade with William, offering his help should it ever be needed in some magical crafting.
Nikolai catches up on some beauty sleep, and the rest of the Fist are pleased to learn about Braugh being alive.
The rest of the day is theirs to spend in leisure, or pursuit of business, however they see fit.
Prudence Gundle (Kathy) Friday January 23rd, 2015 1:48:02 PM
Pru is relieved to hear that Braugh is doing all right. But today she has an important task to complete. She gathers pen, ink, and paper, and finds a quiet place to write. She's still not sure if anything will come of this, but when a god tells you to write your family, you do it.
After a few false starts, she finds her rhythm and starts writing.
Dear Ma and Pa,
I hope this letter finds everyone well. I am doing just fine. I am stationed at the Citadel, in Zarthmoor, which is real handy because this is where I trained. We have a few days before our next mission, so I'm taking the opportunity to write. I hope that is all right.
I am assigned to a really good Fist. Our Thumb (that's what they call the leader) is named Nikolai Komonov. His father was in the Mailed Fist, too, so he knows all about it. He's really smart and good at strategy, and a good fighter, too. There's another spellcaster, too, named William. He's a wizard, so he's also really smart and knows lots of things from books. He's really brave, too, so he's called William the Courageous. There's a dwarf in our Fist, named Tinker. That is, he's called Tinker; his real name is something else. He's good with all kinds of mechanical devices, and he's a good scout, too. Michael Wittman is one of the newer members of the Fist. He's a halfling scout, and he seems nice. We may be getting another new member, a dark elf named Zieluviet, but I'm not sure about that yet.
And then there's me. I was able to get my magic under control, and now I'm a spellcaster. I'm not a wizard like William, I don't know lots of stuff. I'm what they call a sorcerer. My magic comes from the Elementals. It isn't demonic like we thought. And it's under control now, so I don't start fires or anything without meaning to. I've learned to cast other spells, some involving fire, some not.
I want to thank you, Ma, for sending Callie with me. I was real homesick that first night, and it helped to have her. She's still with me, in my foot locker. I don't take her with me on assignments because I'm afraid she might get lost or damaged, but it's nice to know she'll be waiting for me when I come back.
I miss everybody very much. Kiss all my brothers and sisters for me, and give everyone my best. I hope to see everybody again someday.
Your loving daughter,
Prudence
The letter written, she folds it up and seals it with a blob of wax. She writes the address with a careful hand, then goes to arrange for a messenger.

YOU may talk o' gin an' beer When you're quartered safe out 'ere, An' you're sent to penny-fights an' Rattledam it; But when it comes to slaughter You will do your work on water, An' you'll lick the bloomin' boots of 'im that's got it. Now in Izen's sunny clime, Where I used to spend my time A-servin' of 'Er Majesty the Fist, Of all them black-faced crew The finest man I knew Was our regimental bhisti, Gunga Din.
It was "Din! Din! Din! You limping lump o' brick-dust, Gunga Din! Hi! slippy hitherao! Water, get it! Panee lao! You squidgy-nosed old idol, Gunga Din!"
The uniform 'e wore Was nothin' much before, An' rather less than 'arf o' that be'ind, For a twisty piece o' rag An' a goatskin water-bag Was all the field-equipment 'e could find. When the sweatin' troop-train lay In a sidin' through the day, Where the 'eat would make your bloomin' eyebrows crawl, We shouted "Harry By!" Till our throats were bricky-dry, Then we wopped 'im 'cause 'e couldn't serve us all.
It was "Din! Din! Din! You 'eathen, where the mischief 'ave you been? You put some juldee in it, Or I'll marrow you this minute, If you don't fill up my helmet, Gunga Din!"
'E would dot an' carry one Till the longest day was done, An' 'e didn't seem to know the use o' fear. If we charged or broke or cut, You could bet your bloomin' nut, 'E'd be waitin' fifty paces right flank rear. With 'is mussick on 'is back, 'E would skip with our attack, An' watch us till the bugles made "Retire." An' for all 'is dirty 'ide, 'E was white, clear white, inside When 'e went to tend the wounded under fire!
It was "Din! Din! Din!" With the sling bullets kickin' dust-spots on the green. When the arrows ran out, You could 'ear the front-files shout: "Hi! ammunition-mules an' Gunga Din!"
I sha'n't forgit the night When I dropped be'ind the fight With a bullet where my belt-plate should 'a' been. I was chokin' mad with thirst, An' the man that spied me first Was our good old grinnin', gruntin' Gunga Din.
'E lifted up my 'ead, An' 'e plugged me where I bled, An' 'e guv me 'arf-a-pint o' water--green; It was crawlin' an' it stunk, But of all the drinks I've drunk, I'm gratefullest to one from Gunga Din.
It was "Din! Din! Din! 'Ere's a beggar with a bullet through 'is spleen; 'E's chawin' up the ground an' 'e's kickin' all around: For Gawd's sake, git the water, Gunga Din!"
'E carried me away To where a wagon lay, An' an arrow come an' drilled the beggar clean. 'E put me safe inside, An' just before 'e died: "I 'ope you liked your drink," sez Gunga Din. So I'll meet 'im later on In the place where 'e is gone-- Where it's always double drill and no canteen; 'E'll be squattin' on the coals Givin' drink to pore damned souls, An' I'll get a swig in Hell from Gunga Din!
Din! Din! Din! You Lazarushian-leather Gunga Din! Tho' I've belted you an' flayed you, By the livin' Gawd that made you, You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!

William the Courageous (Ken) AC 18, hp 30/30 Saturday January 24th, 2015 9:16:21 AM
William thanks Zel for the offer and agrees that they would make a good team working together on crafting items together. He considers what to do with the young man and decides to sponsor him to attend the star guild that is in a nearby town. Once the boy is trained, he would make a good addition to the mailed fist....
After helping set things up for the boy and giving him some spending money and a letter of introduction from William, he finishes his crafting...
Nikolai (JonathanT) AC 20 Tch 20 Ffted 17 HP 38/38 CMD 20/22(Grapple) Sunday January 25th, 2015 10:20:31 PM
OOC: although the transactions have not been done yet, I'm role playing them as if they've been done. Selling the sword (making it official) and getting a hat.
IC: Nikolai returns from the Catacombs and adds the gold from the magical great sword to their stash. He sports a new hat. Funny thing that. Nikolai wearing a hat. He tried to get a hat that fit his style yet not make him stick out like some weirdo strutting his stuff.
"My father had a hat that had a very unusual property. It could change your looks to fit just about any humanoid type of similar size. I thought that if I had one too and we needed to infiltrate, like a gnoll warren, it might come in handy. I use to play with my dads hat and look like a goblin, kobold, orc, until it got me in deep trouble with... er, long story."
Nikolai tries to enjoy Michael's song but most of it was lot on him. Maybe a pint of ale would help understand it. :)
He spends much of his time studying gnoll and has William help when he has some time. He also checks out a book on lycanthropy to study at night in the barracks when the library is closed.
Zieluviet Iezerth - AC 17 (TAC 14, FF 13) HP 44/44 (Antonio) Sunday January 25th, 2015 11:12:55 PM
Zieluviet is thinking on what to spend the gold, since the next assignment will probably take him to the limit. But all he can think of is the Fist position in the cavalry division. The Drow had practiced quite a lot of horseback riding, even though not combat riding, and something more 'exotic', which could climb walls would be best for his preferred tactics. Surely it's not common to find it, but as he doesn't plan to be in the front, there's no need for better armor and Vnghol is the only weapon he needs. This puts the mount on the question. Or maybe some more caltrops, another elemental gem for another emergency, poisoned caltrops, magically-enhanced caltrops... landmines... yeah, it seems we've got a problem... Better research what breeders/trainers the Mailed Fist makes business with and save the gold for now.
Prudence Gundle (Kathy) Monday January 26th, 2015 1:55:36 AM
Pru also takes a trip to the Catacombs, and returns wearing a headband that makes her, if possible, prettier and more vivacious than ever. [OOC: Pru's Charisma is now 20]
And there's something going on with Pru's hair. When she first came to the Citadel, her hair was an ordinary medium brown. She did have faint reddish highlights, but those were only visible in very bright light. Now, however, those coppery tinges are visible pretty much all the time, in all but the lowest light.
