Undead Patrol

DM Kathy
Wednesday January 28th, 2015 10:39:13 PM

Many of you are just about done with Brother Elthorn and his attitude. Ashley suggests that you depart, and that idea seems to have general approval. Avin mentions that perhaps Abel Boggs could help you find what you're looking for.

[OOC: A "measure" is something I pulled out of my....someplace, because I don't want you getting bogged down in quantities. :) You can assume your characters know about how much you need.]

As you set off, Toston is moving stealthily, while Var wonders whether Brother Elthorn is just yanking your chain. Wilford is fuming. Broom is quiet as usual.

You head [I assume] toward the Scrum, which means cutting through part of Grubbertown. It has stopped raining (well, mostly), and there are a few more Grubbers going about their business. You pay them little heed--until suddenly you hear terrified cries and shouts for help, coming from the next street.

[If you rush toward the danger like the heroes you are, please give me some idea of who's in the front and who's hanging back a bit so I can put you on the map.]

Roy, it's been raining all morning, leaving muddy streets and puddles everywhere. You are walking through Grubbertown, on business of your own, when suddenly you hear terrified cries and shouts for help, coming from your right.

Everybody, when you post, please describe your character so you can "see" each other when you meet. And welcome, Justin!

Crud! I forgot! Before you left, Brother Elthorn channeled positive energy again. Everybody heal 5 more points.

Talanthrel (Paul) [HP 11/11; AC 16; Touch 13; Flat 13; Cmd16]
Thursday January 29th, 2015 1:32:17 AM

Talanthrel follows the others out of the grave yard, taking up a guard position at the back. However at the sounds of panic and combat he swiftly moves to position himself between the rest of the party and the origins of the sound. Drawing his sword and moving forward he tosses a statement over his shoulder to the rest of the party "Remember the 1st Rule of Combat is Don't Die."

Toston Lotor(Hugh Crosmun) [HP:5/9; AC:18; Touch: 18; FF:14; CMD:16] - CMTC  d20+9=10 ;
Thursday January 29th, 2015 7:13:40 AM

"I thought the first rule of combat was pointy end goes in the other guy." Toston replies.

Toston's reduced speed for being small and stealthy had him somewhere in the middle of the group as they traveled through Grubbertown. When he became aware of the cries for help Toston broke stealth running towards the sounds of the commotion. He tries to get as close to the origin of the cries for help as his little gnome legs would take him. As he approaches the source he tries to tell what is going on as soon as he can (Perception: 10), but is somewhat distracted by the shouts and the running.

Standing somewhere between Talanthrel and the other larger members of the party that may have overtaken him is Toston (OOC: Logistically speaking I'm thinking anyone who has a faster speed than Toston and says towards the front in their post will be in front of him but if someone with a faster speed does not say towards the front then Toston is probably in front of them).

If one were looking at Toston they would see a 3 foot 8 inch figure wearing a traveler's outfit consisting of a charcoal grey shirt and breeches and black cloth gloves, boots and cloak. The hood of the cloak is drawn pretty far over his head but if someone was looking closely they could just make out orange skin, violet eyes and close cropped green hair on gnomish features that include a large nose. There is an exotic weapon resembling a scythe in an underarm sheathe on his left hand side.

Broom (HP 12/12, AC17/T17/FF14)
Thursday January 29th, 2015 9:50:22 AM

How hard is it to ground a coin into powder?

Broom shrugs silently to himself as he kept his silver coin, before trailing after the party.

Var HP:12/12 AC: 16(T:13/FF:13) CMD:17  d20+8=27 ;
Thursday January 29th, 2015 9:53:02 AM

At the sound of the scream, Var freezes for a moment, and focuses his keen sense on the direction of the sound (Perception: 27) "Trouble..." he says, removing his hand axes from their sheathes, "Could be more zombies!" and sets off in a dead run toward the direction of the scream.

Taking long strides Var is grateful that the streets are still relatively open - street navigation is not a skill that he's mastered yet. His dreadlocks and cloak flapping out behind him as he runs, revealing a powerful and agile build, more on the human side of the Half-Orc race.

Grinning to himself he feels the exhilaration of running with a pack, once again, the feral blood in him rising up and pushing him forward into a danger that others would run from. His armor, as well as his face, are tough and worn, broken and scarred in places from previous fights, weathered by the sun and the road.

Roy HP:11/11 AC:18 T:14 FF:14  d20+9=17 ;
Thursday January 29th, 2015 10:53:44 AM

Hearing the scream Roy pulls down his hood to better hear where the screams are coming from. In a good jog he looks for the person or persons making the sound (perception: 17) "what a nice way to start off the day" he thinks to himself. Jogging down the street his red hair his flowing out behind him reveling his elven features.

Wilford Grimly (HP:10/10; AC: 14; Touch: 12; Flat: 12; CMD: 13)
Thursday January 29th, 2015 5:17:01 PM

Wil bolts toward the noise. He is near the front with his new Cold Iron Dagger in his hand. His long black cloak flying behind him as his other daggers clang together. Wil has a pair of sharp blue eyes, his long hair tied in a long braid pasted tightly to the back of his head. The excitement leave him with a slight smile. The dead begin to chatter within his head. They sound distressed but running drowns out any ability to understand them.

Avin Fellows HP:12/12 AC:13
Thursday January 29th, 2015 6:36:40 PM

A quick incantation pours from Avin's mouth and he reaches a pale hand from his form encompassing, green cloak out to touch Toston, enshrouding him with unseen Mage Armor (+4 AC, 1 hour). As he trails just behind the freshly enchanted gnome the lantern which lights his path also casts an orange glow upon his pale face, still bearing the wreckage of disease long-past.

Ashley Steward [AC: 17, Touch: 10, Flat: 17, HP 8/13]
Thursday January 29th, 2015 8:37:00 PM

Ashley moved with the group as they headed out towards the Scrum, smirking silently to himself at the debacle that speaking with Elthorn had been. His musings are interrupted by the screams, the smuggler looking up from his thoughts, and begins running with Var and the other heavier combatants. He allows the more lithe ranger to outpace him, hanging back more with Toston and their other, shorter companions. Unlike his other companions, he doesn't have a witty rejoinder to add to the conversation, the only noise coming from him being the jingling of mail and the sound of his greatsword sliding out of its sheath.

DM Kathy
Thursday January 29th, 2015 11:00:43 PM

You all move toward the sounds of distress. Talanthrel takes the lead, with Var and Wilford close behind him. Toston does his best to keep up, but he is hampered by shorter legs. Avin trails Toston, and manages to cast a protective spell on him. Ashley stays back with them; Broom brings up the rear.

When you get to the street, you see a group of undead. Some are skeletal; some still have flesh clinging to their bones. They must have attacked somebody to prompt the screams, but it seems most of the Grubbers have fled. You catch sight of a few slamming doors as you enter the street, although you do see on crumpled figure lying on the cobblestones.

As you approach the undead, you see a red-haired elf run out from a side street. And Roy's hair is red red, blood-red, not the normal red you see in hair. It's disconcerting. You're not sure whether this elf is friend or foe, but at least he's not undead.

Here is your map. I used everybody's image from last time because nobody complained too much. Justin, I find these portraits on the internet. Searching for "elf ranger red" yields pictures of lots of red-haired elf rangers, every single one of whom is female. I found something that I hope will do.

Everybody should be able to move the pieces on the board. Please only move your character, and in accordance with the movement rules. Ask if you're not sure. :)

Roy HP:11/11 AC:18 T:14 FF:14  d20+7=12 ;
Thursday January 29th, 2015 11:54:24 PM

Roy steps out from the side street onto a bigger street and notices a group of 7 people with weapons being wielded and drawn rushing toward the zombies. Roy moves 15 feet toward the center of the street with bow aimed at the zombies "Judging how you guys are rushing toward the undead scum I am going to assume you are not in league with them. Allow me to assist with the destruction of these foul creatures!"

Having said that Roy lets a shot fly from his composite long bow at the nearest skeleton (d20 + 7 = 12)

(OOC: Ok I think I figured out the map movement with little to no effort, I'm not sure how to judge a creatures AC via the map or if we even can. I assumed a 12 didn't hit so I didn't roll damage.

And a side note that character pic works wonderfully)

Talanthrel (Paul) [HP 11/11; AC 16; Touch 13; Flat 13; Cmd16]  d20+5=23 ; d10+3=13 ; d20+3=10 ;

Wil stops to assess the situation. The noises in his head burst but there are only three discernible voices. The voices are fighting for Wil's attention but they all complain about similar issues.
"What's going on with my body? I can feel the evil within it. Please help?" He watches at the skeletal remains march forward when a single voice overwhelms the others. "Wilford, you need to help these men. Something has enchanted these bodies and it keeps their poor spirits in distress." Wil searches the ground for a rock to throw. He has daggers but that will do little. He has a hand crossbow but that likely will not work. He finds several palm sized rocks. "I will do what I can, mother," Wil replies and begins to run forward and throws them at the skeletons.

Roy steps out and fires a shot, but it flies wide of its skeletal target.

Talanthrel charges one of the fleshy undead, which he assumes is a zombie. Up close, though, these undead look different from the shambling zombies you fought in the cemetery. Talanthrel doesn't have time to think about this, though, because he's too busy carving up whatever it is with his elven blade. The fleshy undead, whatever it is, drops to the cobbles.

Important! Everybody please make sure you are familiar with the rules for critical hits. When you roll a 20 and don't roll to confirm, you put your DM in a horrible situation, because DMs in the Wold are never supposed to roll for players. I did so this time. Please, everybody, don't make me do it again. I am a Lawful character; I hate breaking the rules. :)

Toston fires his sling at one of the skeletons, and hears a satsifying plink! as it hits and does a little damage

Var charges another of the fleshy undead, and he also notes that they don't seem to be zombies. Var's axe bites deep, but the undead creature remains on its rotting feet.

Wilford darts forward. He's not sure his daggers or his crossbow will be at all effective against skeletons, so he finds a rock and picks it up. He does not have time to throw it this round, however.

Ashley moves forward, keeping a wary eye out for undead. You do not see any additional undead at the moment.

Avin and Broom move forward and ready their weapons.

The undead converge on Var and Talanthrel, the two out front. Two skeletons rake at Talanthrel with their filthy claws. One connects, clawing the elf''s shoulder for 6 damage. The third skeleton only has to five-foot step before attacking Var, so it can attack with both its claws. One connects, and Var takes 3 damage.

One of the fleshy undead also attack Var. The first misses with its bite, but hits with both its claws! Var takes another 7 damage, and must make 2 Fortitude saves (DC 13) or be paralyzed. The other moves to attack Talanthrel. It had to move, so it can only attack with its bite, but it misses.

Roy fires an arrow at the closest skeleton. It hits, and does some damage, but judging by the way the arrow flies right through the creature's ribcage, it may be that an arrow is not the best weapon against these things.

Toston slings another stone, but he is aiming to avoid hitting his friends, and ends up missing altogether.

Talanthrel slashes at the skeleton(?), but his blade merely glances off.

Wilford steps up and throws a stone at the skeleton. Even though he, too, is trying to avoid hitting friendlies, he manages to send his cobblestone straight into the skeleton's face! The improvised weapon does a small amount of damage.

[If you moved more than 5 feet, that was a move action. Your attack was a standard action. Drawing your weapon would be another move action, so if you moved more than 5 feet, you wouldn't be able to draw your dagger on this turn. You can do it next turn, though.]

Broom aims a head-butt at the same skeleton, but is unable to connect.

Var, paralyzed by the creature's foulness, drops to the cobbles.

Avin circles around behind the undead, hoping to provide a flank for somebody.

Ashley strides right up to one of the fleshy undead. [It looks like you could move up without provoking. You can move through squares occupied by allies, so you could move right through Wilford's square and avoid the AoO. I'll assume you did that, unless there's something I'm missing.] His massive blade cuts down the undead, but he can't connect on the follow-up.

One of the skeletons attacks Broom. Its filthy claws get nowhere near the nimble monk. Two skeletons attack Talanthrel, but fare no better. The remaining fleshy undead targets Ashley, ignoring the downed Var for the moment. The rotting teeth and horrid claws are no match for the fighter's armor.

The feeling drains from Var's body and i replaced with a feeling of heavy, constricting cold. Warring thoughts and emotions clash in his mind as his helpless body collapses to the ground surrounded by the undead fiends. Anger at the beasts, anger at himself for rushing head-first into battle, fear of these monsters preying upon him at their leisure, and shame of letting his comrades down.

A voice pierces the chaos in Var's mind. "Breathe. Focus." the voice is of his father, a moment remember from Var's childhood, "the rage is in our blood, but it is not your destiny. We are not the bloodthirsty marauders that everyone thinks we are, but we could be if we give in to our blood."

Laying on his side, limbs stiff as wood, Var does his best to steady his breathing and clear his mind. Focusing in on the undead that felled him in the corner of his eye, Var goes back to the basics of his training as a hunter: patient observation. (Perception 18) He never studied much religion growing up, Whispering Copse was far removed from most churches, favoring worship of the Culverwood and other natural gods. Outside of the stories about Domi's adventures Var didn't know much about divine threats, like zombies, however, a beast is a beast. A pattern would exist, and a weakness would present itself - it always did if the hunter was patient long enough...

Var, paralyzed, is nevertheless able to analyze his foes for weakness. He thinks that maybe if he concentrates, he can help make these things easier to hit. Or is that the paralysis talking?

Roy changes weapons and tries to recall if he's heard of this kind of undead. He draws a blank. Maybe it's an entirely new type of undead! Maybe you'll get to name it! What will you call it? "Those things that almost killed Var" has kind of a ring to it.....

Wilford steps up, intent on protecting Var.

Avin lands a blow on the fleshy undead, but doesn't quite dispatch it.

Ashley shouts tactical instructions as he swings, but his blade misses its mark.

The one skeleton continues attacking Broom. One of its claws comes close, but is unable to damage the nimble dwarf. Two skeletons attack Talanthrel. One of them comes close, but the fighter's armor is too much for them. The remaining fleshy undead whirls to attack the guy who just wounded it, which would be Avin. The creature's bite misses, but one of its claws connects! Avin takes 7 damage, and must succeed at a DC 13 Fort save or be paralyzed! The creature then decides it doesn't like being in flank, and steps up next to Avin.

Ashley moves up to attack the creature attacking Avin. His sword misses its mark, however.

Talanthrel takes another swing at his skeletal foe, but misses.

Toston steps up and elbows the fleshy undead. For what it's worth, the bludgeoning damage seems to go through just fine.

Broom lashes out wildly, but misses--probably because his opponent is already down! It's time to find a new foe.

Var observes the scene while Wilford asks his departed friend for some insight. Wilford has a sudden sense that this fleshy undead can be attacked normally with any kind of weapon: slashing, piercing, or bludgeoning. He also knows that the skeletons really should be attacked with some kind of bludgeoning weapon.

The two skeletons press their assault on Talanthrel. Each of them only hits him once, but once seems to be enough. Talanthrel takes a total of 6 damage, which puts him down (I think; let me know if I added wrong).

As the remains of the zombie collapse beside him he begins howling with what little breath he has. However, soft and broken from the paralysis as his voice is, it produces a sound more akin to the most wretched sobbing.

Singularly compelled against the thing in front of him he begins a mental assault, flinging the mental energies bound so easily in his cantrips at the thing only for them to unravel, unable to cross the dimensions of energy into existence with neither the support of incantations nor ritual gesture. Fruitless though it is, the wizard is relentless in his attempted assault.

Avin's breath slowly evens out. He shudders as he regains use of his limbs, contracting into a ball. He pushes himself onto his knees, his torso resting over his planted hands. As he releases a few ragged breaths he turns to Ashley. A long moment passes and he snorts. He attempts to stand on his own but his legs prove nearly insubstantial still and nearly faceplants into a corpse.

A few more breaths pass.

Raising a shaky hand, he gestures to Ashley to help him up. As he rises once more his legs come near to giving out again and the wizard clutches the taller man like a sailor might the mast of a ship in a whirlpool.

Apparently unwilling to let go of his support, Avin keeps a firm grasp on the fighter's arm as he stoops to retrieve his dagger. He wipes the blade against the leg of his pants before sheathing it and repeating the now tried-and-true latch and stoop method to pick up the magic lantern Boggs handed him so recently.

Still without the barest hint of a grumble the mage attempts to stand on his own. It takes two twitching, wobbling attempts (and subsequent returns to clutch-for-dear-life position) before the wizard manages to make a few shaky steps on his own. As he looks back at Ashley, it's hard to tell if Avin is blushing or if that's just the natural pallor of his wrecked cheeks. He turns away quickly with a grunt.

"Thanks."

The extended gratitude is quiet, almost half-imagined, but it seems all the short man will give at the moment as he begins shuffling away on unsteady feet.

He then moves to regroup and meet the newcomer Roy, the fighter's deep blue eyes looking the Elf up and down, as if sizing him up. There was no subtlety to it whatsoever. He then speaks, dusting off his mail as he does so.

"If my companions don't mind, you're free to come with us to the Scrum. Though for now, I think it's best that our own business remain our own."

The fighter wasn't showing much trust to Roy, but then again, all he had to go on was the red-head's assistance with the walking dead. Overly trusting fools didn't last long in Dirt City, and Ashley didn't plan on dying just yet.

Seeing as the rest of the party is searching the corpses, Ashley watches them carefully until they are finished. It would seem the smuggler is used to working with others that won't mind pocketing or hiding a few baubles from the pot when it came to split time.

Once they finish, Ashley began to walk towards the Scrum, not responding to Roy's statements, nor saying anything at all.

DM Kathy
Tuesday February 10th, 2015 10:14:59 PM

Under Ashley's watchful eye, Var and Wilford search the bodies of the undead. You find a heavy gold ring with a cloudy green gem, a cloak brooch of ivory and coral, and a silver pendant with small dark-blue stones. An Appraise check might tell you more about them.

Broom looks around, but doesn't see anything the others missed.

Talanthrel makes good use of a healing potion, while Roy turns his thoughts to what these undead may have been. You don't know about the fleshy ones (you already failed a check earlier, so you can't re-try unless you get some new piece of information), but you are able to recall quite a bit about skeletons. They are best attacked with bludgeoning weapons, and are immune to cold (in addition to all of the other things undead are immune to).

Toston tries and fails to find his sling bullet, then suggests that you continue to the Scrum.

Var, however, has questions about the bodies. Do you just leave them here? Can Boggs send someone? There aren't just the undead here; there's also the unfortunate Grubber who went down as you arrived on the street. Do you want to leave the bodies for the time being, or figure out something else to do with them?

"The poor man," Wil thinks. "Is that a piece of him against the plaster wall?" A large section of the pale plaster wall is red in color with dark chunky pieces. "Looks like he had no options," Wil walks over to the body. "I wonder if this man can tell me what happened to him."
"Hello, friend," he begins. He forgets to quiet his voice. I guess he is becoming more confident in his ability to talk to the dead. (Perception: 20)

Avin takes a look at the recovered jewelry. He agrees that it is valuable, each piece probably worth some hundreds of gold pieces, but beyond that it's difficult for him to say.

Toston and Wilford study the downed Grubber and find that he is, in fact, dead. Wilford, using his amulet, tries to find out how the man died, but the answer is unclear. The body bears numerous ugly scratches of the kind inflicted by the undead you just fought, but it's unlear whether that is actually what killed him. Wilford does not see the man's shade, and hears no reply to his question. Perhaps even in the afterlife, Grubbers are a close-mouthed lot.

Var and Roy begin hauling the bodies into an alley, where they will be a bit more out of the way. Talanthrel stands guard.

The streets are still wet when you finish your task, but the rain has been done for a while now, and the wind is just wind; it no longer can find stray drops to fling in your faces. So that's something. You make your way to the Scrum, and begin looking around. There's very little organization here; traders are set up at booths, or tables, or the backs of wagons, or even a bit of canvas spread on the ground, wherever they felt was a good spot. Making your way among them is difficult; some are very close together and there's little room for foot traffic.

At first glance, you do not see Boggs in the confusing crowd.

Once at the Scrum, Var bristles and sneers at the crowd and the forced proximity to so many unfamiliar people (Intimidate: 8) but it doesn't seem to buy him an extra elbow room. He keeps his eyes peeled for Bogg's booth (Perception: 19), hoping to catch a glimpse of the unassuming man.

A young man jumped up and down in front of him. "Donny, how are you?" Wil asked. "How's your mother?"
The young boy smiled. Wil bent at the knees to meet the boy. "Wil, my mom is in so much trouble," the boy said. "There is a bunch of men that keep bothering her."
Wil paused but kindly explained that he could not help the young man. He offered the name of a friend that he had met years ago but the boy was very disappointed. (Diplomacy: 22) "Donny, do you know anything about these undead incidents? Have you seen a man named Boggs?"

Ashley and Broom look around for Boggs, but don't spot him in the throng. Talanthrel keeps an eye out for powdered silver and pickpockets, but finds neither.

Avin is likewise unable to spot Boggs, and feels a bit uneasy about the whole endeavor.

Roy, too, is feeling a trifle uneasy; he doesn't know what's going on or who the group is looking for.

Wilford spots an acquaintance and has a brief conversation. [OOC: Some DMs like to be the ones to run the game, and really don't care for intrusions by players into the overall plot and storyline. Others are more flexible. And in this case, the situation is further complicated by the fact that we are playing in a shared world and all adventures need to be approved, in advance, by Jerry. In general, random stuff like this is not going to be something we can follow up on. If you'd like to have some influence in the direction of the story, you can always send an email, either to me or to the group, saying something along the lines of, "I'd like to see us do X." Keep in mind that there are seven other players who are also going to have ideas about what kinds of stories they'd like to see.]

Var is able to catch a glimpse of Boggs, and Toston scrambles up on a cart to confirm the sighting.

You are able to shove your way through to where Boggs stands behind a small folding table, talking to a short, slender man in a cowl. "It's a powerful curse," Boggs says in a gruff voice. "Bought direct from the Nightmakre Quarter in Plateau City itself. You got enemies, this is what you want." The cowled man mutters some reply, weighs the small vial in his hand for a moment, then places it back on the table and departs. "I'm here all day if you change your mind," Boggs calls.

"And you, sirs," he calls to you. "Something for a rival? Much cleaner than a knife." In a lower voice, he asks, "how are you faring? Have you found any undead?"

The tall fighter approaches Boggs' table, idly looking at the vial that the previous potential customer had just set down. He picks it up, looking at it as if inspecting it for quality while he waits for the others to catch up. He makes eye contact with Boggs, if possible, and gives him a simple nod to the question, setting the vial back down on the table. When he does, he sets his hands down upon the surface, as if leaning to look at other wares. His fingers, however, indicate the exact number that the group has put down thus far, trying to be subtle about it.

"None behind, no undead in our wake. A few lost souls though," Avin looks over his shoulder to Roy the Red, "plus one. Looking for powdered silver. The man at the 'yard had no powdered silver."

Words dripping with intent, the wizard hopes that Boggs understands the message without the need to give details to the masses surrounding them.

"Poison!" he scoffs in response to Ashley. "Poison is for schoolgirls. That there's a curse, the most powerful money can buy!"

He gives Roy a hard look, but seems satsified, for now, with Avin's hasty explanation and the group's implicit endorsement.

"Powdered silver?" He's not bothering to whisper, so you gather that discussing powdered silver is unlikely to excite comment. "That's a little tame for the Scrum. There's a shop in Dockside," and he gives you quick directions. Toston, who's spent a fair amount of time in Dockside, is pretty sure he knows where the place is.

"But what say you to this?" he continues, lifting a small object from behind the table. "The hand of a mummy. A genuine mummy, mind, not one of your fakes! Ah, the things you could do with this!" In a lower tone, he adds, "can't help with healing potions, I'm afraid. That shop may have some." Loud again, he continues.
