Zachamiah's Letter

James Dietz CoDM
Tuesday January 20th, 2015 1:43:49 PM

As you walk down the street planning your next move you spot one of the younger members of the elite guard comes running towards you from an oblique angle. As he approaches he holds out a piece of parchment. "You have to see this." he says as he holds uot the parchment.

To Zshottat, High priest of Billoopl,

Greetings! The plan proceeds. I have found and selected a group of thieves to catch and execute by
drowning. This will be the first of many executions by drowning, now that this has been accepted
by the council as the local means of execution.

The setup has been planned and executed. They should commit the crime of theft within the next
few days. Prepare the rituals so that their souls will go to the Unholy One. Note the large "plank"
that I have ordered built in the harbor.

Judge Azarthat is now a convert. All angles have been covered.
May the Unholy One grow obese with the blood and souls of our sacrifices!

Zachamiah

Accepting the parchment from the young guard .... Peza reads .... her eyes widen in surprise and she gasps

"Where did you get this ??? does Hellsha know of this ?? " waitng for a reply ... afterwards the raven haired girl adds " thank you for this .... you have done well .... glad to see that there is integrity in the elte guard ... i wont forget this "

" if i may ask a favor ... please inform Council member Hellsha of this ... ask her we need to meet with her tonight ... have her send a message to the WLA compound ... i will be there later ..."

Once the young guardsman leaves .... Peza reads the letter to those present ...

"We need to get Cinnamensen to her parents ... then inform Captain Ceri of this .... hopefully we can meet with Hellsha and use her contacts to thwart this .. "

Turning to Cinnamensen ... " we need to get you home ... " pausing a moment " i will do whatever i can to save your brother and the others ... "

Hustling to Cinnamensens house ... then on to the WLA coumpound to inform Captain Ceri

Just when it looked like he was going to get a drink, he was beginning to suspect a plot. Barratore waits for Peza to read the paper. Barratore is a bit dumbfounded and stands there demonstrating just that. It takes several seconds for him to process, but he eventually spits out, "Death by drowning?" Barratore shakes his head, it still sounded outrageous. "The council has accepted death by drowning?"

"None on the council can be trusted if that is the case." Barratore will hustle along with the group and Peza's laid out plan. He is irritated, but one of the lessons beat into him was patience. Peza had a plan, the Captain would as well, and Barratore would see them carried out.

Tuesday maintains a vigilant eye on the surroundings on the rest of the walk home.

Arriving at his door he unlocks and opens it, speaks the password for the warding spell, and welcomes Gerox inside. (glyph of warding on room inside, triggers curse that indelibly sticks intruder to the floor or wall. covered by business as security expense. Subject to DM ok, of course).
Locking the door behind them, he makes sure the drapes are closed and lights off, and heads to his bedroom.
Taking a silver scrying mirror from his spell component pouch, he says to Gerox: "I will cast the spell here, feel free to help yourself to water or food while keeping an eye out. I will be ready to begin the scrying in about an hour, it would be good for you to be here at that time.". Invoking Ffloy's name and beginning to chant, Tuesday proceeds to perform the scrying ceremony targeting Zachamiah. (DC 20 will save to resist)

Brom nods in agreement to Barratore. "You bet."

The young guard intercepts the group and the note is read. You can visibly see his anger when it's done. "I'm gonna kill that guy." He says debating whether or not to go do the job right now. He knows the Captain will need to be informed and that she will send them to handle the situation in some way.

"Guys," He says stopping. "I'm gonna stop this. Death for stealing? Even if they weren't set up, there is no way death should be the penalty for stealing anything. I didn't bleed for this town to see tyrants rule. An' I don't care if I have ta go against Rum itself."

He draws his sword and pulling his hand across the blade he says "I swear I will put an end to this. By Domi, I'll kill that bastard and his dark god." He raises his hand and lets the blood run from the wound and fall on to the ground.

Gerox is surprised by the letter as are the others, "Tuesday and I will continue on with the scrying but we might have some new targets. We need to get this letter to the Captain. She will know what to do. I have two concerns. First, while the letter is scary, it really isn't proof of anything that couldn't be torn apart in a court of law. If these folks are as politically connected as it seems, we need to make sure we catch them red handed or we will be shouted down in council.

Second, who is this "Unholy One"? Does anyone know. A dark god, a demon. I would suspect he might be water related if he is excited about drowning. Drowning seems important. Odd way to execute people. Bit slow."

Gerox will move along with Tuesday and keep an eye out on him during the scrying. "Who exactly are you scrying on? I would also check in on the prisoners as well. They might try to execute them tonight if they get word we are on the case."

Barratore realizes he is not going to get his drink just yet and waits for Peza to read the paper. It takes several seconds for him to process, but he eventually spits out, "Death by drowning?" This has been the city policy for a while now, although when it was originally put through it was reserved for capitol offenses such as murder. "None on the council can be trusted if that is the case." he adds.

Brom can feel the vein on his neck pulsating when the letter is read. "I'm gonna kill that guy." He says. Death for stealing? he says amazed at the escalation of punishment. Even if they weren't set up, there is no way death should be the penalty for stealing anything. He draws his sword and pulling his hand across the blade he says "I swear I will put an end to this. By Domi, I'll kill that bastard and his dark god."

Gerox is as surprised by the letter as are the others and suggests you need to get this letter to the Captain. He then point out two concerns. First, if these folks are as politically connected as it seems, we need to make sure we catch them red handed or we will be shouted down in council. Second, who is this "Unholy One"?

Tuesday is the last to take in the letter. "They didn't cover THAT guy in seminary. As he think about it, he is sure he has never heard that name before when he trained on the main land. I'm all for taking this to the captain, and I can use the letter in scrying on Zachamiah if she thinks that will be helpful."

Peza is the only one to question the guard. "Where did you get this ??? does Hellsha know of this ?? "

It was in Delsarian's foot locker. I was gathering his belongings to bring to his family when I found it. I was afraid of who I could trust among the guard, so I brought it straight to you. Hellsha doesn't know.

Peza teaks the guard and is glad to know that there is integrity among some of the group. She then asks him to inform Council member Hellsha of this and for her meet with them tonight and send a message to the WLA compound. He readily agrees and heads off at a run.

She then suggests the group drop Cinnamensen off at her house and return to the WLA compound to wait for a response from Hellsha and speak with Ceri.

As the group talks Tuesday's touches a hand to his forehead and light blazes forth as he prepares to go.

Barratore immediately stops the retreating guard, but Peza feels the young guard is needed to deliver a message to Hellsha. She reasons that this has been Rum's method of execution for a while now and the note was found in Delsarian's foot locker, who was supported by Hellsha. Just because the council implemented it does not mean they are all a part of what is going on.

Edson is quick to agree. "Even if they didn't vote for it, there is nothing they can do. It is now law.[/b] The guard waits for Peza to dismiss him, clearly a little intimidated by Barratore.

Peza sends the guard on his way (I assume) and quickly leads the group to Cinnamnsens parents house, dropping her off and informing the parents of there youngest son's situation.

Looking around and realizing that he is clearly not with you the man continues. Please bring her inside. I will make sure Horgal get you your money. It will be waiting for you at the WLA when you return.

You knock on the door and a moment later it is opened up by Cinnamense's mother. Before anyone can say a word she throws her arms around her daughter's neck, her tears drenching Cinnamensen's hair. As she tries to speak between sobs Mr Senir comes down the the stair. At first there is a look of relief on his face, but instantly it turns to anger. Where is my son? Weren't they together? Barratore walks in silence and is not paying attention to much. Peza doesn't tell the guards much and Barratore is not going to add to the mix. When Brom speaks of going recon, Barratore locks eyes with him, "Take care of Edson" small pause, "He still owes us drinks"

At Senir's house, the man's reaction quite frankly makes him mad. The minotaur reacts and puts his finger into the mans chest, "Silence! he thunders. Peza makes not of how Zachamiah seems to escalate issues and bring about havoc and does her best to sooth the family's fears as Tuesday makes a mental note of where the Senir residence is located, so he can send a messenger at an appropriate time in the next days to collect his focus ring. (In case I forget to to mention it or Jeff takes over and this detail is lost in the transition, you can assume you got the ring back.)

As the others talk Tuesday tries to recall what he can about Judge Azarthat. From what he can recall, Azarthat was only recently appointed. Nothing stand out about the judge. No major speeches. No great deeds or accomplishments. No great campaign. Having kept his finger on the pulse of the political world in order to predict how it might influence trade in the city the young Venturer has to assume the man is politically connected. As for what judge will oversee the thieves trial, he is clueless, but he wouldn't rule out the posibillity.

In response to Mr. Senir's raised voice Gerox steps forward and begins to speak softly and gently. The quiet words force Mr. Senir to lower his voice so that he can hear the words. Your son is alive but he is in trouble. He was running with the thieves guild and was caught breaking into a building by the Elite Guard...Murder was done during the arrest and all are implicated. I suggest if you have any influence or friends who can help, you get them involved immediately. These words have a sobering effect on the man as he realizes the depth of the situation.
(I made a diplomacy roll for you).

Barratore takes the opposite route and puts his finger into the mans chest, "Silence! he thunders. "You do not get to be angry and yell at the men fighting to bring home your children! You DO get to be thankful and grateful" Barratore turns and heads out quickly as well with Peza, bringing the elite guardsman with. The man is about to retort, but Gerox words still ring in his ears and he instead calls one of his servants and prepares to send him out, calling in any number of favors for his son.

---------------------------------------

WOOSH!!!

As Barratore opens the door you just have enough time to see a carriage rushing past at full speed. It is large. Too large. Through the bars on the back door you can see the hands of several children reaching through, and then it is gone. By the time everyone exits the house a second figure comes into view, a man dressed in such bright colors he can be seen far down the street. You recognize him as the town crier, and even from this distance you can hear his shouts has he rides past on a flying carpet.

"Hear Ye! Hear Ye! An execution by drowning will occur in the harbor on the hour! It is every citizen's responsibility to bear witness to the lawful punishment of criminals. Please begin making your way there."

Apparently the council organized a trial much sooner than expected. Already people are clogging the streets as they begin to make their way towards the harbor. At the rate people are filling the streets you realize that it will soon be impossible to reach the Harbor in time to intervene, even running at full speed.

Before you can contemplate this another carriage rounds the corner in front of you. It is painted gold and has the name Judge Azarthat painted on the side. It is flanked by four of the elite guard and sitting next to the driver is Zachamiah.

Tuesday steps quickly into the path of the carriage, holds out his hand and bellows "Halt!", directing his command with divine force at the driver. The man, a commoner without any training in the arcane, falls quickly to the spell and pulls up on the reigns. Staring down the guards he adds, "Zachamiah and the judge are under arrest for circumventing council's authority and the rule of law, surrender them immediately" (You cannot make an intimidate check, move action to run in front of the carriage, and standard action to cast a spell. I also need to know your land speed, I couldn't find it on your sheet. Horses are moving approximately 50ft and 5x speed and have a head start. Distance to the proper area of the harbor is over 2 miles, and I will need constitution checks. Also keep in mind that to run at 4x it needs to be in a straight line, and as people fill the street it will become difficult terrain.)

Barratore takes off after Brom. The minotaur matches the barbarians speed and uses him as his guide to the docks. (see above comment)

Gerox looks to Peza and says, "I will chase down the two fighters and try and use a voice of reason to stop the execution. You work the judge angle. Look for magic influencing him if he stops." Gerox then casts a fly spell on himself and takes off after Barratore and Brom calling to them to wait.

Peza turns quickly to the young elite guardsman ... " quick as you can get Council women Hellsha and bring her to where they are going " commands the ranger. And then moves to the front of the carriage. She then releases the captive guard and he eagerly runs in the direction of Helsha's house.

Tuesday - Time stands still for a moment. Tuesday can see each face in the crowd, the elite guardsmen reacting to his outburst, the expression changing on Zachamiah's face, the hooves of the horses beating on the cobblestones. He notices half the group making a hasty exit. Standing resolute, a bead of sweat begins forming at his hairline...

----------------------------------------------------------

As the group begins splitting up and the carriage comes to a halt Zachamiah jumps down from the carriage and draws a gleaming bastard sword from a sheath on his back, the blade longer than most men. He face slowly draws into a cold smile that never quite reaches his eyes. You have no authority to stop us or the judge. That spell could be considered assault, and the arrow attempted murder. Stand aside, or We Will settle this once and for all! The other Elite Guard members draw their swords and step towards the Peza, Tuesday and Edson. Three of the guard are on the left of the carriage, Zachamiah and another guard are on the right.

Tuesday begins what he hopes will be a lengthy reply, moving his hands along with his words and spinning magic into his speech to draw all eyes to his eyes, all ears to his lips, all minds to stand enthralled.
(casting enthrall defensively, passes concentration check)(DC 17 will save or be enthralled)
"I speak as representative of a much higher authority than the council you are betraying with your actions, Zachamiah. But no title or position is required to stop a lynching, only the courage to stand up. And good people, have no doubt this is a lynching. Less than an hour ago these children were apprehended, less than one hour, and they claim to have done the due deliberation of a trial.
Under the cover of night, with great haste, without notifying the public or even the parents of the accused, they have taken it upon themselves to doom these souls to drowning.
Is this the law? The least among us can recognize that it is not, not in the good city of Rum. Not even among the pirates of accursed Bonetown would they call such farce by the name of justice.
And so I stand here facing these men at arms, those who would be the elite guard and paragons of justice, as they drag her through the mud. These men who would be our shining hope and aegis, who aim to squander our faith at the altar of bloodlust. Our city stands to be the gem of the untamed West, and she deserves better.."

Tuesday continues his speech, speaking loudly and clearly and with focus.

(ooc: I don't know if I should roll diplomacy checks for the effect of my speaking on the crowd, beyond the effects of the spell. If I should, the result is 35. Also, how far away are Zachamiah and the guards?)

Brom knows this end of the city and if the human can run there, so can Barratore. Giving up and admitting defeat are not among the qualities that were instilled to Barratore growing up. Post will come later this evening, but to answer the question "How can the wagon effectively sprint and we can't. If the streets were filling up that fast, then they should have to slow down as well." It is because currently you can sprint, but there are criers all over town spreading the word as the carriage goes by. You might have gathered by the note that some of this was planned ahead, As the wagon gets further ahead the streets are going to fill up behind it quickly and get crowded. This is now the biggest city in the Wold with thousands of people and everyone is going to the same spot at the same time, and eventually the streets will become so packed with people that they couldn't move out of your way. I was just trying to be nice by letting you know that your characters would put together quickly that running after the carriage on foot was was not ideal, and I even suggested a faster mode of transportation to help keep the gap minimal. You can try running on foot, but do not expect it to be easy.

OOC I need a quick idea on where we are in relations to the harbor. Is a fly spell going to help us cut corners or is it a direct shot straight to the harbor north to south?

Ooc: sorry for the missed post. My wife has been sick and I though Jeff was taking over this week.

As Brom charges after the speeding wagon he cannot help but marvel at how fast the city has grown. Only a year ago Rum was nothing but tents, and even when Rum celebrated the completion of the nicer neighborhoods the population was nothing like this. As he thinks about it, the City of Rum has been steadily growing ever since the discovery of the Leviathan shrimp. Most of the people and chaos centered around the harbor, but as he thinks about it he recalls the expansion of Rum, the vampires building far out believing Rum would expand to them, and the ever increasing crime and number of missing people. Still, it was only with the latest influx of people that Rum surpassed Plateau City in size, and he realizes just how many ships must have arrived. No wonder the government and law enforcement has been expanding. They must have understood what a valuable resource the shrimp were and how quickly Rum could become a trade center, so well situated as a layover for so many trade routes. He also realizes that while aware of Rum's ever increasing number of people, this will be the first time he has seen so many people out at once and in one place. Yes. he thinks to himself. The bulk of the town's growth has definitely occurred since the discovery of those shrimp and with last few fleets of ships to come in, which have been coming ever more frequently.

As Gerox follows behind he raises into the air. At this point he is unsure where in the harbor the carriage is going. It is currently heading straight south, and that could lead to the center of the harbor, however he realizes the carriage may head towards the Eastern side of the harbor as more of the government buildings are located on the Eastern side of the town, or perhaps the Western side where it tends to be lower income residents and where crime has been the worst. They they do turn and he cuts across now, he might be able to close the gap, but if he chooses wrong it will widen. Unfortunately, straight ahead, to the South would provide the best view for the city a a whole. However, he can tell by the filling streets that crowd will get to the point of being unable to move out of Barratore and Brom's way before they reach the harbor unless something is done.

(Due to the long distance, I am going to have each of you roll 3 dex checks and 3 intimidate checks this round.)

Tuesday gives Edson a major stink eye as he watches his delicate negotiations trampled by the Roue's arrow. "Nobody will be fighting, stand down! Stand down, Edson!" He puts a hand to his symbol of Ffloy and calls for sanctuary and walks past Peza to the other side of the street, doing a quick scan of the crowd to see if they have blocked the street yet. You feel a wave of energy as Ffloy's protection enfolds you like a comfortable blanket. As he walks he sees the streets quickly filling up. Already it is almost as full as you would see in the day time, although the confrontation with the Elite Guard is drawing a ring of onlookers who are more interested in this fight than making their way to the harbor.

Peza too commands Edson to hold his fire explaining that you can't bring him to justice if you kill him. Addressing the other elite guardsmen, she hopes she might similar integrity as the young man she sent after council women Hellsha. We're here to stop Zachamiah and his fiendish plans ... I have proof of his criminal actions that proof came from Delsarain ... who was murdered by Zachamiah himself. As she speaks the other guards cast each other sideways glances and look after the guard you sent running towards Hellsha. There appears to be some hesitance in their eyes, but they do not loosen their grip on their weapons. (I rolled a diplomacy check for you, but in the future please make the roll yourself, Jerry doesn't want the DMs making those rolls for you.)

Edson doesn't fire again, but pulls back the arrow and holds it. He keeps the aim at Zachamiah still. "His eye already belongs to me, take arms against us and I collect more."

---

Zachamiah wipes at the stream of blood pouring from his empty socket. I WILL KILL YOU!!! Twice more he swings his giant blade at the hot tempered rogue. His blade missing by mere inches. Edson releases his arrow, and watches as it flies by Zachamiah's head and buries itself in the wagon. The other guards stand unmoving. It is unclear if they believe Peza or are confident their leads can take care of himself, but for now they wait.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Barratore and Brom stumble in the crowded streets, their heavy armor and inability to maneuver slowing them down. The sound of metal crashing on the cobble stones can be heard and Gerox decides to move down and cast a flying spell on Barratore and Brom. By the time he is done he realizes that the three will not be able to run down their quarry before they reach their destination, but feels confident they can get there in time to stop execution. Unloading the prisoners will take some time, and if they are waiting for the who of Rum to arrive on foot it will take that much longer.

(I need fly checks for flying at an angle to rise above the crowd, 2 for Gerox since he needed to descend first. Please let me know if you are flying together or if you all fly at your different max speeds).

From where you are flying it appears an area of the harbor has been roped off and is blocked by guard and local watch groups alike. A large plank extending into the inky black depths has been erected and two people appear to be testing it to ensure it is solid enough for the nights events.

------------------------------------------

Peza sidesteps Zachamiah and Edson, hoping he can handle the fight he picked. She keeps her hands weapon free, showing the other guards no threat. "no need to interfere ..... Zachamiah will be brought to justice .... i'm Peza of the WLA... " as she plays to the crowd and guards hoping to gather support from the citizens to help sway the elite guards " don't let his misdeeds taint you ... hold your positions " As she speaks more citizens gather round, but her words do not appear to sway them. She can hear people talking of a fight and making wagers. They are hear to watch and for some entertainment, unswayed to one side or the other.

Tuesday also meets the eyes of the elite guardsmen and speaks to them. "Guards, councilwoman Hellsha is being summoned and will sort out this mess. If you could help us keep these two from killing each other before she arrives I believe she will be appreciative." As he says this, he wonders how much Hellsha can be trusted. He again tries to think of who the council members are and if any of them would be likely to be supportive and/or live nearby. Looking to the two combatants he shouts "Edson, stop attacking! Just dodge the brute until we can hold him back."

As if in response Edson calls out, "Catch" and tosses his bow at Zachermiah, hoping he will mess up and catch it. The trained guard does not catch it, but rather knocks it to the side with his sword allowing the thief rolls backwards 5' feet and come to his feet with sword in hand.
(ooc: Since Zachermiah has a 10ft reach you do not leave his threatened zone and do not trigger an AoO)

Zachermiah spits and swings his sword again, the gleaming blade whistling through the air. The sound of sword hitting metal rings through the air and blood splatters the pavement (AC 35 for 14dmg). His nostrils flare as he swings again, his time slicing across Edson's face cutting across his eye and nose (Hit AC 29 for 19dmg). Got me a souvenir as well! he shouts back. He seems to calm down now that the "insult" has been repaid, but his one good eye never leaves Edson's sword.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS!!! a sudden shrill voice calls out as Hellsha and the young guard push their way through the crowd. She speak with such authority that the onlookers part before her, despite her short stature. Walking right up to Zachermiah and stepping between him and the quickly bleeding Edson she thrusts a finger into his chest. What in god's names are you doing? she yells. Take his sword and lock him up till we get this straightened out! She commands the remaining guards. Rest assured I am going to find out what is going on, and the stories I heard better not be true! The remaining guards looked shocked and unsure of Hellsha's authority over them, but It is said that each man carries in his eye the exact indication of his rank, and one glance at her stare tells them they better quickly obey.

Turning to Peza she points fuming and says, You! I received the message you had the guard send. What is this all about, and why didn't you send him to me sooner?!

Edson takes 38 dmg

Hellsha's eyes widen at the revelation of Delsarain murder an her face turns red. Why didn't you tell...never mind....the kids are what is important now. Turning to the remaining guards she says,

The guards have formed a barricade around the harbor preventing anyone from crossing over to the cleared area. Edson thanks Tuesday for tending to his wounds, warming up the the man fairly quickly for having just met him this evening. Glancing down at his wound he sees it is still red and raw, but it is now keeping what remains of his blood inside his body, and that is enough. The children need them and he can recover from his injuries later. Edson picks up his bow and hops up into the carriage, ready to go.

Tuesday climbs into the driver's seat and picks up the reigns as he replies to Hellsha. "I can drive a carriage, but we should attend to the passenger inside first. He watches as Peza climbs into the coach and lets her start with the questioning as he urges the horses forward towards the harbor, regularly cracking the whip to warn pedestrians in the way.

Behind him Peza eyes the Judge, and he can hear her addressing the judge. stay still and keep your hands visible. The ranger orders. "We'll have plenty of time to talk later. Pulling open the curtain that separates the passengers from the driver, she fills Hellsha in on the details of what they have found out and how you all suspect that Judge Azarthat was complicit in arranging some veneer of legality to this debacle, and was named in that note as well. She then explains how the note was discovered and brought to them by one of the Elite Guard.

-

As Peza relays the information Hellsha tries to remain composed, but the young ranger can detect the fury I her voice. Although a calculating politician it would seem her concern for the children is genuine as is her outrage at the uncovered corruption. The judge, on the other hand, makes no attempt to hide his emotions. Sweat is pouring down his face and his look is one of pure fear. All the color has drained from his face and his hands are shaking.

The coach lurches as it races forward at top speed, Tuesday's skilled hands steering him the many people clogging up the street. Then, turning a corner, you spot a horse and cart blocking the way. You have just seconds to react and either turn and go up on the wooden sidewalk with the wagon or make a dangerously sharp turn into an alley.

Please make a driving check to avoid the horse and cart, and a second check to either return to the road and get off of the wooden sidewalk or exit the alley safely.

Closer to the harbor Gerox casts invisibility on himself. As he calls out the arcane words a couple people look about, but with the chaos in the streets few people notice him, and not a single guard looks up. Continuing forward, he flies over the guards and lands near the planks.

Barratore flies over the guard as well not caring if they see him. The guards draw their weapons, but hold their position. You are interfering with a lawful execution. These criminals have been tried and found guilty. I received a a letter with the judge's insignia this very evening. I assure you this is completely legal and justified. The look in his eyes tells you he is not about to put up with any interfering, and you know it will take quite bit of diplomacy or intimidation to sway him and his men. In the distance he can hear the people murmuring. It would appear they are just as shocked as the guards by your sudden appearance.

We were part of the capture of these prisoners mere hours ago. Does it make any sense to you that all of this children could have been tried, properly accused and defended, and sentenced in a few hours? Does it makes sense to you that the ragamuffin children should be given the harshest sentence for theft?

One of your own guardsmen found a letter penned from Zachamiah to a priest named Zshottat. Zshottat is a priest of Billoopi. Honestly I have never hear of either priest or God but in that letter, on conspiracy was laid out saying these kids were to be sacrificed to Billoopi. Those two are some of the WLA's best fighters in Rum and they very riled up right now. I have some small skills as well and will stand with my friends. The decision is yours. The cart into vendor's cart, Caisys' Breads, leaving a pile of debris on the ground. Fortunately the owner closed shop some hours ago and somehow those walking on the sidewalk manage to jump out of the way. After several near misses he pulls hard on the reins and steers the carriage back onto the cobblestone road. (You are lucky a natural 1 is not an auto fail on a skill check)
ooc: yes, it has been more than 5 rounds since taking the carriage

Edson looks out over the city, hoping they make it in time. His fingers trace the cut on his face, but his mind is elsewhere...

Peza feels her body thrown about as Tuesday jumps the curb, but never lets her eyes leave the judge. He is shaking all over and she smiles at his discomfort. Ow such a man ever rose to power is beyond her .... "So why did you select drowning as the punishment ?? Who were the kids to be sacrificed to?"

The judge stutters terrible. D...d...drowning h...h...has a...a...always b...b...been the p...p...punishment. There is some truth to this. Since the first capital crime in the city drowning was the punishment, but as you think back over it the crimes that have been given such a sentence has been increasingly benign. First it was the those that organized the rebellion, next the murder from the lover's spat, and as crime became more rampant the punishments have become increasingly severe. When the question of a sacrifice comes up the judge flinches and he appears to go even paler. I...I...I don't know w...w...what you are t...t...talking about.

Cracking, the crowd does its best to move out of the carts path as it speeds forward. As you approach the harbor you can see the masses crowding to the shore and you realize you are going to have to do something big (intimidate, an impressive handle animal role, etc...I suggest making 2 more checks) or find an alternate route to avoid the crowd. Brom quickly catches up to the others and flies over the guards head and lands just in front of the plank. He stands, sword over his shoulder, defiantly. Hearing the guard, he shouts "Legal or not, this execution will not take place. You can either hold yur ground or face my steel." The guards weapons are all drawn, but no one advances. He can tell some are intimidated and others he recognizes from walking the streets and is sure they recognize him and know his reputation.

Barratore stays right where he is. Lawful executions aren't done under the cover of darkness. That's where murderers, assassins and the honorless live" This seems to get some reaction from the crowd. Barratore is no diplomat, but he also is not an intimidator. Still, his words are having an effect on some and so far he hasn't baited the guards into a fight.

Gerox then his invisiblity spell moves forward to stand with Brom and Barratore. The guards visibly start ad point their blades. He then explains the situation to the the best he can. There is much confusion and people begin yelling from the street. No one seems to know who Biloopl is, but you can distinctly hear a woman yelling Won't somebody please think of the children!

-

The lead guard shouts back to Gerox, Put down your wands and weapons an perhaps we can talk. What exactly are you asking me to do? The judge signed the orders. Who am I supposed to be waiting for? It sets a bad precedent to let three people with weapons stop the execution of murders. He takes a step towards Gerox, and the rest of the guards follow his example. I did not put down one insurrection to then sit idly and let the people of Rum become subject to such horrors as being whisked off in the middle of the night and drowned."

Gerox steps forward with his hands raised with the palms out. "Sir, all we ask is that you delay the execution for a couple of hours. If you don't and it is found you drowned innocent kids, you days as a guardsman will be over. If you show good judgment and compassion, I am sure it will be noticed and you will have the thanks of the WLA and the people of Rum will respect you even more.

The rest of my friends are looking to bring councilmen here to help straighten this out. You can see the crowd is with us. Just give us some time. Stall. Read out the judgements, give the prisoners time to give their last words, send for a priest to give them blessings. That should be enough for our friends to arrive."

The young rogue senses the chaos all around him, but his hours of training allow him to focus his senses. Just as his ears need to tune in to the tumbler when picking a lock he allows his ears to tune in to the various sounds of the city. " I hear Barratore!" Edson yells over the rumble of the carriage. [/b]"We have to get their before the kids are killed."[/b] Edson knocks an arrow in the bow and awaits the arrival, not being able to see he doesn't know if his friends will need help.

Peza eyeballs the judge and thinks on what to ask next, knowing that time is of the essence. Thinking fast she decided now is not the time to pussy foot around the issue and lays into the judge with all the psychological pressure she can muster. Perhaps she learned from Cinnamensen's manipulative ways, or perhaps it is because this guy already looks on the edge of having a heart attack, but she can almost feel him bending to her will. "You know full well what the sacrifices are for ... or shall i say to whom .... the unholy one .. .. " She watches for his reaction and watches what little color is left drain from his face. "Are information is that you were a recent convert of this Unholy one ...... i'm sure if you cooperrated it might well be taken into consideration ..... as a judge you know quite well how that works ... but then again we're heading to the plank ..... be a shame to see you walk it. Once we reach where the punishment is taken place .... you can speak up and rescind the punishment ... that would one way to help yourself " (In the future attempts like this are not likely to go well with out a diplomacy or intimidation roll, but lucky for you this guy is already at the breaking point)

Tuesday assesses the situation quickly and slows the horses enough for people to get out of the way. Taking the reins with one hand he pulls his trusty whistle from his pocket. Blasting shrill notes through the air he then shouts: "Make way! Make way for the judge! Reprieve! Make way for the judge!". He holds the whistle in his mouth and takes the reins with both hands as they approach and pass through the crowd, blowing loudly as they go.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --

Barratore sheathes his sword and steps forward to put Gerox within his protective reach. Most people recognize the sheathed sword as a sign of peace, but when it is done by a someone with a 10ft reach, horns as deadly as any short sword and a weight of half a ton, the gesture is a little less meaning full...still, it puts the guards at least a little more at ease. "Following orders without question is how evil succeeds." Knowing Gerox has a better tongue, Barratore feels he should be quiet, but he also feels speaking fighter to fighter might be the way to go in this case. Barratore keeps his voice at a normal speaking level and is speaking directly to the lead guard in a personal conversation, "This smells like a foul deed and you know it. I did not put down one insurrection to then sit idly and let the people of Rum become subject to such horrors as being whisked off in the middle of the night and drowned."

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --

The judge nods, barely speaking. You get the impression he is one threat away from fainting. In almost a mumble he says, I just joined to meet people and make connections... His voice trails off deciding silence is the best option for now.

Tuesday stops the carriage further away from the plank than he would like. With a crowd this size it will take forever to get through, but his quick mind comes up with a plan. Pulling a shiny whistle from his pocket he blows on it and announces the judges presence with such authority that the crowds part before him. With Tuesday leading the way, Peza escorting him, and Edson following behind with a bow to watch his back, the judge has a regular entourage.

As you march forward through the crowd you can see three guards marching the children from the carriage to the clearing in front of the plank. As the prisoners are marched to the harbor a cry rises up from the citizens as they realize just how young the captives are and how many of they are girls. It is clear the crowd expected to see hardened criminals, not petty thieves. As you pass close by their outrage seems to bolster the judges confidence slightly as he approaches....Unfortunately, those standing more than a few yards from the prisoners cannot see them, and their shouts are even louder and over power those of the concerned citizens. WALK THE PLNK! WALK THE PLANK! WALK THE PLANK! It chaos around you is becoming deafening.

Barratore tries his best to convince the guard to put off the execution in order to do the right thing, but the plea falls on deaf ears. The man is trained to do his job and know full well that good intentions can open the way for trouble. It is not his call to decide what laws to follow and enforce, and not even he is above the law. (Sorry, there was not diplomacy check.)

Gerox sees Barratore struggling to sway the guard and adds his voice to the conversation. He noticed the guards reaction to the mention of innocence and children, but realizes the mans position of having to uphold and follow the law while while not wanting to comple. Stall. Read out the judgments, give the prisoners time to give their last words, send for a priest to give them blessings. The man nods, realizing that these are things he can do without bending the rules too much and setting a questionable moral example for the city. Stepping forward he clears his throat. SILENCE!!! You are amazed at how loud the man is. You suspect it must be from shouting drill commands all day, but still...the volume is incredible and the entire harbor falls quiet. IT IS TIME TO READ OFF THE CRIMES OF THESE CHILDREN SO THAT THEIR FATE MAY BE AN EXAMPLE TO ALL. One by one he lists the crimes, not just the ones the children were likely to have been charged with, but all that he can think of which were associated with the guild. Murder, theft, impersonating a cleric, over due library books, and the list continues.

Just as the guard is beginning to run out of examples Tuesday arrives with the judge close behind him.

Edson doesn't want to stop a second fight, but is prepared to end one if it comes to that. He keeps his bow taunt and everyone keeps their distance. Close by he can hear Tuesday speaking to the judge reassuringly and places a comforting aura of protection over him, "Just do the right thing, judge, don't be afraid. Let these children live." As he speaks a little color returns to the mans face. Peza, reaming close by just in case he decides to bolt, look ahead at Tuesday and accesses their new found friend..... he's pretty cool under pressure and thinks quickly on the fly. .... Good thing we came upon each other. muses the ranger.

Brom continues to hold his ground, and his stance make it clear that none will pass. Although prepared for trouble, the guards must see the danger in his eyes, for none attempt to lead the children past. Next to him Barratore watches as the others come into the clearing.

Suddenly screams fill the air and hands fly to hilts as the sky bursts into hellish flame and the dark silhouette of a gnomish sorcerer is highlighted against the emblazoned sky. The crowd goes silent. "Silence! Silence! The voice bellows. This isn't a lynch mob! Be silent NOW!"

When the flying pyromaniac is through speaking the judge takes advantage of the momentary silence, rejuvenated and encouraged by Tuesday's gift. My good people. Who can honestly stand before me and say that thy are afraid of these children? Can any man here honestly tell me this twelve year old girl makes them fear for their life? I have a hard time reconciling the charges presented to the court with those brought before us today. No one shaking in their boots? Then, to prevent a miscarriage of justice, I am placing a stay of execution of the sentencing of these kids. There is murmuring from the crowds, both embarrassment from those pushing for the execution and outrage from those who are just catching on to the fact that children were involved.

At these words a three people manage to push their way past the guards and run up the one of the children. Horton find himself smothered in his mother's arms and both his sister and Mr. Senir hold him as well. After a couple seconds Mr Senir breaks the embrace and walks over to the judge, whispers something to him and hands him what looks to be a bag of coins.

Ladies and Gentlemen. As you ay be aware, the number of ships entering our harbor have steadily increased since the discovery of the Liviathian shrimp around our island. Just recently our census takers have determined the City of Rum to be the largest city IN THE WOLD. In light of this revelation, and as an apology on behalf of these children, an anonymous donor has offered that if we use this lovely plank for a bonfire and shrimp roast he will buy all the drinks the Squid's Ink Tavern has to offer. All in favor of of celebrating Rums First Annul Leviathan Roast?

The response is over whelming, and not just because of the offer of free beer. In a matter of minutes the plank has been torn up and brought to shore, but more heartening is the number of teary eyed parents forcing their way to the children and broken relationships find themselves instantly mended by the reprieve from death. Even the few orphans find themselves swept up and taken in by the families of fellow guild members.

(Of course my introverted stuttering judge rolls a natural 20 after getting blessed by Tuesday.)

Gerox flies down from the sky to partake in the roast. Although many people are more than a little scared due to his earlier antics, the children gather round him and cheer him on as he uses his magic to help get the fire going, placing strategic bursts of flames to get the kindling going. Once he is sure the fire is going and there is no hope of the plank being salvaged he will then make his way over to parents of several of the children and enjoys the mending of hearts.

Edson only smiles at the outcome of the execution as he puts his bow away and and walks over to Gerox, Brom and Barratore. "That was amazing Gerox" the elf says to his pyromancer friend. Hellsha takes custody of the judge. I am not sure what exactly he can be charged on, but I think we can keep him locked up for the night. Perhaps the morning will shed more light on the situation. The councilwoman heads back to the jail with the judge and locks him up and posts two guards outside his cell.

Everyone then heads over to the Squid's Ink. As you approach Tuesday walks up to Edson and calls a healing energy into his wounds, saying. "Bold move going head to head with big Zachamiah, I thought we were done for when I saw your arrow fly. Worked out, though." He looks around and smiles. At the party Peza mingles .... enjoying food and drink .... making new friends among the locals ..... About an hour into drinks Hellsha returns and she share a drink with the councilwomen before introducing her about.

Tuesday joins Barratore, Peza, and the others, enjoying a big shrimp steak and taking the opportunity to lift a cup with his fellow adventurers. As he licks the rich inky dark froth from his lips, he finds himself wondering what useful byproducts the shrimp might yield. As the shrimp were only recently discovered the citizens are still looking for unique uses for them. They are large enough that almost anything edible can be easily used for food, however much of waste is being used as a type of fertilizer or composted. There have been some attempts at using it as fishing bait with mixed success. (This is still being developed, there will likely be more info on this in the future).

------------------

Back at the party everyone indulges to their hearts content. The Squid's Ink has prepared their famous shrimp with spicy pepper sauce, coconut and sweet sauce, numerous places are making kabobs, and every where giant shrimp steaks are being served. As you grab your mugs Old Salty, who has has a bit too much to drink, Can you believe it. To think they were going to sentence those kids. These times are grievous. The whole world is in turmoil because it has become worse than at the time of the deluge! Everything is in suspense, like a thread; when this thread breaks, the justice of the gods will fall like a thunderbolt and will complete its terrible course of purification. e lifts his mug up to you, spilling half of it. Thank ye for stopping it...those poor kids. He then stumbles off looking for moor beer. A moment later a man hands you a steaming "Shrimp Leg". It is my newest creation. They are served still in the shell, so you can eat them with a fork as you walk. Perfect for the man on the go. Do you think they'll sell well?

The party wears on into the night, but the flow of shrimp and liquor seems to have no end. Nor does the citizen's boundless energy. It seems every few blocks local musicians are playing on the corner and people are dancing in the street. As you walk several people ask you to stay and dance, and recognizing you, make sure to thank you for your great deeds. Even Skully Swiftblayde and his band give you an appreciative nod, high praise from your former rivals. They don't even cast a single insult your way.

-----------------

In the jail cell the judge looks a little more relaxed and seems to be able to talk easier without so many people watching him. In response to Gerox first questions the judge looks puzzled. Merchants? I don't know anything about merchants. As for the Elite Guard, Zachamiah and a couple of his guards gave report of the crimes. They only contacted me about the crime this evening. The judge talks freely, and Gerox can detect no trace of dishonesty in his words. When the gnome shows the judge the letter he shakes his head. I have never seen that paper before and have no idea what it is referring to. The only group I have joined recently is more of a social group that a lot of business men and politicians join to get connected. They were the ones who backed me in becoming judge. I don't know who they are yet. It is like a pyramid. Everyone knows the guys on the bottom, but the higher ups are only known to other higher ups. I am beginning to move up, but I am not a higher up yet. After today, I am not sure if I want to be, they were kids... The judge begins to cry and refuses to say any more tonight.

Edson goes back with the others to celebrate at the inn. He is happier then can be, as the children are saved and everyone is ok. He has his fair share of food and spirits, but keeps it in check and at a minimum. When he notices no one is looking he sneaks out of the inn to be by himself.

Walking the streets alone, he takes time to smell the city and see it as it is in its dark enviroment. It reminds him of home.

OOC: OK, will fix John.

Barratore goes into full party mode. He finds a spot where he can see what's going on, but not at the center of things. He then sets about to drinking heavily, and eating his weight in shrimp and cheese. Barratore looks at the new Shrimp on the Go concoction. He snorts a bit, "Why do you want to eat on the go?" is his likely to gruff reply.
Barratore waves off Old Salty, "More tales of woe and destruction." Barratore bares his teeth and claps the man lightly on the back, "Worry not, Brom and I ain't going anywhere!"

As old salty comes by ranting Tuesday just observes him closely to try and discern where the old sailor is coming from, and to pick any relevant nuggets of information out from their boozy surroundings.

Tuesday is intrigued by the shrimp on the go, and hands the man a card with his office address. "Good idea, though others will pick up on it quickly - how many stands do you have? If you want to get out ahead of the crowd with this product, I've got some ideas I can offer. Take a day or two to get your plans together and let's talk, my business address is on this card."
Once the man has moved on, he speaks with his friends. "Food carts are so trendy right now, the guy's got a shot but he's going to have to hustle for it. I hope he shows up."

Overall, Tuesday enjoys the festive atmosphere, chats with and gets to know his new comrades, and graciously accepts any dance offers (displaying two very charming left feet on the dance floor, stepping on toes with a smile).

Before the night gets too extremely long, he heads back to his home in order to finish up paperwork and get a couple hours of rest, making sure to set up a time to meet up with the rest of the group in the morning.

Oh, he also swings by Caisy's breads stand (which got knocked over by the carriage) and appraises the damages using barnum's appraisal (trade domain ability, gives +20 to appraise checks). Leaves a note apologizing for the damages, an offer to pay his estimated fair value for them, and with contact information.

After the crowd's reaction to killing of children, Brom is in a foul mood. His normal let's party persona is replaced with that of I just wanna pound the stuffing out of ya. He doesn't stay at the festival longer than to find out if the guildmaster was released or has disappeared. After that, the barbarian heads off into the city. It's now a city he barely recognizes as the one he moved to, and now resembles more of the one he left.

After stopping by a tavern elsewhere in the city to grab some ale (he buys a small keg), Brom heads to a park or someplace with no people and lots of green.

The night continues to pass by in a blur of beer and dancing. With tensions gone and things calming down Brom begins to wonder why Angeni, the thieves guild master was not among those be executed. Something about it doesn't sit well with the Barbarian. "What happened to the thieves leader?" He asks one of the elite guard. "He was rounded up with the others, but I didn't see him here."

The guard shrugs his shoulders. I am not sure. He was scheduled for execution tonight as well as the children, but if I recall he was going to be brought down in a separate carriage. Because of his skill and training we had to keep him under a closer watch and more secure conditions. It was also decided that he should be kept apart from the children. I think they were worried he would organize some sort of breakout or something. After the ch...others (he apparently cannot bring himself to say children out of embarrassment we made example of I believe there were plans to make a special example of him for corrupting the others. My guess is they locked him back up and are trying to decide what to do with him. Before his sentencing there was talk about contacting the main land to see if he was active in a guild over there, and to check for a bounty. That is likely the new plan. They can't exactly let a man like that loose, and the mood of the city would make an execution unpopular, especially in light of the new evidence. I'm guessing they'll keep him locked up for good while, until everything has blown over. If they're smart they'll get one of them Justicars from the mainland to judge him. It is hard to argue with a sentence or pardon handed down from the gods.

After the crowd's reaction to killing of children, Brom is in a foul mood. After learing what he can of the guildmaster's fate he heads off to a distant tavern to grab some ale and heads to the edge of the city, one of the few green areas not currently full of people and sits himself down. On his way Harper, the young young cleric of Gargul with a Irish accent who had healed him of the Golem's curse, spots him and tries briefly to cheer him up. I just wanted to thankya for whatchya did. I don't think the people they were kids, ya know. To sacrifice the innocent like that.... it's a bad omen, ya know. Not just in religious affairs and dark rituals, but for society. I think that's why the crier didn't mention that part. A society that lets that happen...dear, I am making a muck things. I mean to be cheering you up. You proved there are good people in this city and shown a light on the darkness that has been creeping in. I just wanted to say thanks. She then leaves Brom to his drinking.

Edson goes back with the others to celebrate at the inn. He is happier then can be, as the children are saved and everyone is ok. He has his fair share of food and spirits before sneaking out of the inn to be by himself. Walking the streets alone, he takes time to smell the city and see it as it is in its dark environment. Tuesday - As old salty comes by ranting Tuesday just observes him closely to try and discern where the old sailor is coming from, but all he can tell for sure is the sailor is drunk...suddenly the old man shouts I AM THE LZZARD KING!!! and bites into a giant piece of shrimp. Tuesday is certain the old man is so inebriated that he has no idea what he is jabbering about.

Tuesday, intrigued by the shrimp on the go, hands the man a card with his office address. The man assures he will and reads the card three time before placing it in his pocket. As he walks away Tuesday can hear him talking to himself about how his luck is changing.

Overall, Tuesday enjoys the festive atmosphere, chats with and gets to know his new comrades, and graciously accepts any dance offers (displaying two very charming left feet on the dance floor, stepping on toes with a smile). He then swings by Caisy's breads stand and appraises the damages. The woman is there, selling what is salvageable of her goods. The wood of the cart if damaged and splintered and two of the wheels are broken. The damage is extensive and her inability to move will hamper her sales greatly. He estimates to get it repaired, fix the paint and replace the goods in a timely fashion would cost around 20 gold.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The party continues well into the night, and both the ale and shrimp seem in unending supply. It goes on for hours and you are sure you will never see another event like this. Not even the celebration of Rum's "completion" had been this large or this long and it seems like everyone has a personal reason to celebrate. Those who listen to the citizens learn that they had all been aware of the increase in crime and heard rumors of a thieves guild, but none had expected it to be composed of children. The had envisioned a group of hardened criminals coming in from the main land to start anew, where they wouldn't be recognized. More shocking is the lack of anger directed at the city. Although they are upset, they appear to be more upset with themselves for their ignorance. Still, the atmosphere is one of jubilation. The celebration of reuniting families and more importantly good triumphing over evil, and everyone knows it.

Gerox fills new power and knowledge filling him. He decides to check it out. He casts beast form 3 on himself and turns into a large eagle. He spreads his wings and flaps them experimentally and then launches himself into the air. He will climb above the city in slow lazy circles until he gets to around 1000 feet up and then he will take a good "birds eye" look at the new Rum. He will see if he can detect patterns in where people are living. Is everyone in a building or are there tents still? He will fly down to the harbor and check out the ships moving towards the city and note anything else of interest. He will then head back to the inn and land on the roof.

Approaching Caisy, Tuesday speaks in a conciliatory tone. "Hello, Caisy? Tuesday Shiner, I was the driver of the carriage that hit your cart. I'm so glad nobody was hurt, I just wanted to come here and make sure to set things right. Would it be alright if I paid for your damages, and maybe bought a few loaves to take home?"
He slips 20 gold pieces and a collection of silver ones into her palm, if she'll accept them.
"Seem like a fair amount? Should be enough to get you back on your feet, plus a few loaves."

[Perception 7] as the night wanes and the truly early hours start to appear, the fighter will hoist himself to unsteady legs, drop 20 gold, or was that 50. No matter, Barratore shakes his head a bit, gives the gold a last look and then moves to the door and into the street. Putting himself on automatic stagger, he makes his way to the WLA compound and his bed. Few hours of sleep and he'll be right as rain

Brom listens to the cleric. He understands what she was trying to do, but it doesn't change the fact, in Brom's mind, the people of the city had become darker.

"I need a vacation. Somewhere out of the city."
