Zee makes a ladylike exit when the boys turn toward the bar proper. She returns to the rooms and finds a place on a balcony or breezeway to look at the night sky. Zee attempts to meditate, she allows her powers to spill out over her in all sorts of crude shapes and visions. Though she would never admit it out loud she finds herself wondering where the magical gifts come from, and maybe just maybe, what higher power threads her destiny...
Still, Zee tries to keep her wits about her. She would not want anyone to catch her doing something as silly as "meditating."

Atlas is happy to have many of the group join him at the bar. He spends the night with them just sharing tales and getting to know each other. When asked about himself he typically turns the conversation back to those around him with a simple, [b]"Crosseye, I heard you and Mack talking about religion the other day. Do either of you follow a god?" "Carver, tell me more about the Mailed Fist. I feel my destiny is separate from theirs, but I have to admit that my experience with them was quite good." "Mack, do you know any other instruments? Do you sing as well?".
He clearly feels comfortable with the group, so while he does want to learn more about the others, he is also willing to be completely open with them now. He's a new man since he stayed with the monks, but to fully embrace that he has to be willing to accept his past and move on. Sharing is his way of proving to himself that he has done that. He is also willing to admit that to keep himself as this new man he has to continue to focus on it day in and day out. There's no room for setbacks and he is not afraid to ask his friends for help with that if they ever see it happening.
After the night runs out Atlas heads back to the apartments to get a good night sleep. He'll stay up late if anyone wants to talk further, but he's just as content to go to sleep. Sleeping in was nice for one day, but it is not in his nature to do it regularly. Up with the sun, no matter the evening's activities...usually.

I'm happy to share.... I don't have a lot of exciting secrets.
"I really enjoy playing certain instruments, but I don't really have a lot of talents with any in particular, including the ones I've been playing lately. ;) I'm not a big fan of singing, though. I just don't enjoy it; although I like listening. Do you sing, or play anything?" I really enjoy finding other people that play instruments, and hearing them.
I relay basically what I said with Crosseye as well, about my upbringings and beliefs in religion, although if Carver, Cameron, and/or Zee are nearby, I may slightly adjust so as not to offend them:
"We weren't a very religious family.... or village for that matter. We seemed to regard the gods like we do royalty.... just normal people with more power and more money. Some are good. Some are bad. But we didn't give them any respect outright just based on their 'status'. We didn't worship any of them for the most part. In my family, anyways, we seemed to hold that respect more for nature itself."
I listen to everyone's stories they are willing to share, and how they came to be where they are in life.

Carver is willing to talk about the Mailed Fist, but shy's away from the religion discussions, feeling that each has his own impressions of how they do or don't worship. "Well, the Mailed Fist is a very organized entity. Usually consisting of Fists each of which is made up of type of combat person. For example, a normal fist would be a group of five, all of whom were either scouts or another with another type of skill. Cavalry, melee, mage and priest are just examples of how each individual fist consists of. Now Cameron and I are obviously not the same type of combatant, and before his finding of his deity, after his news from home, he was sort of a bard but also a fighter, where as I'm a cavalry based fighter type, with a touch of Holy power. Or fist was special, it was created as trial to see if combining different abilities would prove profitable to the organization. We were a Double Fist, and had a bit of everything for skills. I have no idea how they made out after Cameron and I left, but I was so diseased by the swamp fungus, I couldn't survive there much longer. It was after we left the swamp, that my Aunt contacted me and we eventually ended up meeting you all."

While at the bar with the others I stay quiet to start. Mostly to see where it was headed. I listen to their tells and stories. Carver's intreed me a lot. He seem to be part of a experiment, the order of the fist tried. Did it work or not I am sure. Should it have I thing so. To me a good group will have many strengths and few weakness and the idea of creature/poeple all adding their own strengths over coming their weakness (hiding them). Atlas seems to be deflecting the conversion about himself for the most part. He must like to keep his priviet life privite. As he night goes on and the drinks flow we all seem to losen up abit. I ask Mack to play us something. I really like his playing. It lighten the mood and bring a festive fell to things. I explain to the other what I told Mack about religion. "I know, not much about gods and was rasised more to repect everything around from the small to the very large and that everything has a spirit that should be respected. I am just learning about the gods and am open to everything."
I the ask the group if they have gotten any information of the tree and area and surgest a explore outing tomorrow was be in order. We could head off in the direction if the seeer and see what we find or come across, maybe look for any near by outpost/settlements to visit?

The next few days pass ordinarily enough. The group settles into a routine of sorts and gets to know each others less adventuring sides and begin bonding as true companions and friends. Moana has returned, one of the part time residents packed and left and all but 3 merchants passing through are gone as well. Cameron has his critters, their habitats and food supply. Saide Silvergraft has an arrangement whereby a monthly supply will be brought in for Cameron's critters. Dungarth is able to deliver the specialized whip as well. With the tree in a rare quiet mode, he was able to spend much more time on it. The masterful work done on the weapon is a thing of true beauty Carver finds himself speaking with Boolia on getting his holy symbol embedded into his armor. The half orc nods and agrees that she could do it, as long as Carver didn't mind the work to be done in crushed stones. "I would think onyx and pearl for the eye with a ruby circle." She shrugs, "You know, for life, death and Woldsblood." If Carver agrees she says it will take her the better part of a week and cost 50gp
On one morning at breakfast, there is a buzz about the prior evening. Most of the staff and the few guests are talking about a strange light display that happened in the very late or early hours, depending on your perspective, to the north. Only Sarah, a galley maid that the entire group knows working at Tree Tops Inn, saw the event of those who are talking

Cameron gets shakily to his feet after finishing his prayers. The poison was much stronger than he expected, or perhaps the Lady's message was THAT important. The colors, and the words had been potent. They were etched into his memory by the poison. On wobbly legs he returns to their apartment. He sees Zee... meditating? Huh, she didn't do that before that he had seen. With a shaky hand he opens the door, and staggers into the room. He waits for a moment as his eyes adjust to the light in the room. With a groan, he heads for bed. This will look much better in the morning, once the raw edge of the poison had dissipated. He thinks about leaning down and taking his boots off, but when he tries, a light explodes behind his eyes and pain shoots through his head. Instead he just falls forward into his bed and passes out.

OOC Oooh simulposting.
IC The next morning, Cameron wakes up late and the sun streaming into the apartment is BLINDING. Immediately he puts the hood to the tabard up, cloaking his eyes in its shadowed depths. He rises to his feet, not terribly steady. His mouth feels like it is lined with cotton and his throat is raw. He walks, slowly, to the Inn for breakfast. With a raspy whisper he orders sweet rolls, as many as they can find for him, with as much icing as they can make and coffee, a whole pot with cream and sugar to go in it. He sits and works his way slowly through first one, then another, then a third sweet roll, slowly sipping his coffee as he slowly demolishes the plate of rolls. The longer he is there, the less stoop there is to his shoulders and his eyes seem to open a little wider. By the time he finishes the coffee he almost feels like himself again. He listens to the story that the wait staff are telling. It sounds like what he saw when he returned to the apartment, but most of last night after his prayers is a blur. The prayers though, They were etched in his mind. He saw the whip, and when he picks it up from Dungarth he already knows it will be awesome. He thanks the leather worker profusely, and promises to endorse the man whenever he is asked who made the whip. The whip feels like a living thing in his hands. The colors are brilliant, as he knew it would be. The tip flares at the end resembling the head of a viper . This gives it an authoritative weight that when snapped, creates a very dexterous feel, ensuring it will do exactly what he wants it to when he uses it. He visits the other merchants, gathering reagents to properly consecrate this weapon to the Lady tonight, during his prayers. The rest of the prayer ritual had shown him what he was supposed to do to dedicate the whip, and he wants to be ready tonight, when the moons are dark. For the rest of the day, he plans to again scour the forest floor, looking for a suitable place to make his own. The prayers did not show him that. He feels sure he will know the place when he sees it.

So far Cameron's excursions about the tree has yielded little. The grasslands about the tree have not revealed any streams or rough rock that might hide a small cave. But there is still plenty of land to look at. Dungarth smiles, "Was a pleasure young master Cameron." Mack sneaks a cricket, it's crunchy and tastes like nothing really. Moana tells Mack she will let him know on other excursions. Sometimes she enjoys the solitude. Sarah agrees to talk with Atlas and show him where she was after the morning duties are finished. She tells atlas where to meet her when shift finishes. Carver and Atlas both meet her and she takes them to a small off entrance to the kitchen. "There." She says pointing north. In the morning light his bright green eyes are taking in The Tree - clearly he hasn't been this way before - and he wanders about the base at a steadily decreasing distance before finally deciding on the best way in. IC Sense Motive on Dungarth 15 Is anything going on with him that I am not seeing on the surface? His address is, well, kinda formal. Or does that just seem to be his manner of speaking?
Cameron returns to the Tree as afternoon creeps into evening. He will dine with the others at the Inn. He eats again like a starved prisoner making up for lost meals. His face is pasty and he looks a bit feverish. His throat also seems a bit raw and his voice is slightly cracked, as if he might have been shouting for a long time, or had somehow otherwise damaged his throat. He invites them to a consecration ceremony tonight at the base of the Tree. He has received his new whip from Dungarth and wants to dedicate it to Jancassis. He does not wish to make the others uncomfortable, by doing so in their apartment, nor anger Liliput by doing it somewhere else in the Tree, and so has chosen a place at the base of the tree to hold the ceremony. When midnight approaches he sets up the place at the base of the Tree with the few things he needs. An empty crate, used as an alter. A few candles affixed to the top of the altar. A bowl made of earthenware so that it will not burn, with some sand in it to hold the incense. As the ceremony starts, the candles are lit and the whip is laid in the middle of the altar. The whip is of black and red braided leather. The two colors are woven to show the double helix symbol of Jancassis over and over on the whip. The tip is a bit thicker and flatter than one would normally expect from a whip. As the ceremony begins,Cameron speaks a few words over the whip, in dwarven ( since that is what he has spoken most of his life, and was the primary language of his teacher) He then lights the incense, and allows the smoke to drift over the altar, wreathing the whip as he speaks a few more verses of Jancassis' ceremony. As this happens, one of the candles goes dark. He then pulls two pouches from his tabard and with another verse, spills their contents, ground gemstones, onyx and garnet over the whip, which is still wreathed in the smoke from the incense. As he does this, another candle goes dark. Next he pulls a vial of holy water from his coat, and sprinkles it over the whip and altar. As he does this, another candle goes dark. As the ceremony comes to an end, he holds his hands over the altar and speaks the words of a spell ( Spellcraft DC 16 to decipher, Highlight to display spoiler: { Summon Monster I } Before the last candle is snuffed out you can see a snake writhing through the coils of the whip. In his right he holds the coiled whip, now dedicated to Jancassis. In the unsteady light from his hand you seem to see the tip of the whip moving on it's own, like the head of a tiny viper. You almost swear it has a snake's head at it's tip. Cameron thanks you all and lights some torches for you to make your way back to the Tree. The stranger with bright green eyes, makes his way up the great winding stair and to Tree Tops Inn. Once inside, he spots the main group of Carver, Atlas, Cameron, Zee, Crosseye and Mack. An odd group of humans, halflings and a centaur. There are only a few other patrons about and the staff. Osul, as he is soon known to be called, makes introductions.
The stories of the morning already have the attention of Atlas, carver and Crosseye. They speak to Sarah and then strike off to find Dungarth the leather shop owner and now known leather craftsman of considerable skill. It was the previous day when Dungarth gave Cameron the newly finished whip. Dungarth, in his early 40's perhaps has polish to his speech and stature and perhaps there is more to him then meets the eye. He is certainly not a backwoodsman skilled at tannery and leather work, but a man trained and likely apprenticed in a large city and now lives here.
Mack wanders off aimlessly after welcoming Osul
Zee takes it upon herself to make him feel far more welcomed and invites the man with the brilliant green eyes to join them for dinner that evening. It would give him a chance to become acquainted with the tree layout and allow her friends to look into the story of the blue light.
Osul finds the open paths and curving lines of the upper walks within the Tree offer pristine and glorious views at every turn. The walkways flow about the Tree at nearly 120' off of the ground. http://woldiangames.com/Woldipedia/index.php/Tree_of_Parting http://www.woldiangames.com/Woldipedia/index.php/Geography:_Izen Tree is the hex towards the upper right south of the Red Hills. For nearly 30 miles in every direction is bad lands/grasslands. The East West Road runs south of the tree, with an extension linking to it.
Osul cannot help but be swept partially into the conversations about the Main room of Tree Tops Inn on the blue lighting that was seen far to the north near the Red Hills the previous night. -Recap for Osul - "There." She says pointing north. "I was stacking out some bottles, when I saw a flash from the corner of my eye. I turned to look, and another blue flash erupted in the northen distance. It was beautiful and I just stared hoping to see more when it happened. This great blue bolt shot into the sky and did so for like 20 minutes." Sarah's hands fly about as she talks and she finishes by saying that Dungarth was at his dark forge above at the time too
Blue lightning that shoots from the ground to the sky is beyond any guess Sarah has. "That falls into the realms that Moana gazes upon. " she answers in all honesty
Dungarth's shop is not open, but the trio of heroes quickly learn noon is considered early for the man.
Moana's is open and welcomes everyone inside. Her outwardly small appearing shop has far more room than you would have expected. She does need to make accommodations for Carver by rearranging a few things, but in moments, after shooing away multiple cats and a toad, she has space for all. "Awwwwkkk! Magic, I see Maaaaagic" the loud piercing sound comes from a covered cage, which Moana quickly stands and moves through a side door. She shushes the creature inside several times.
Moan apologizes and lights several candles which sputter and flare before settling down to a relatively quiet burn. Moana appears to be in her 50's, her once raven black hair is streaked with grey and some platinum white. Her skin is olive and well cared for and she uses a luminous blue color on her lips with a black liner setting a striking contrast to her white teeth and olive skin. She is dressed a robe of sorts with a shirt beneath and high leather black boots. On the table before her is a large orb of glass or crystal, 4 large blue candles, some incense and a small skull of an unknown creature.
"A Reading, an interpretation? Or do you seek the sight of beyond" She half whispers in a floating voice with her dark eyes wide, catching the flickering candle light in them.

OOC "Dark Forge"? Was there something in Dungarth's shop I should have paid more attention to? Thanks for solidifying the day. I need to keep track of that for recovery.
IC Cameron had caught on to all of the goings on while he was preparing his ceremony. They were all on about the lights. Honestly he couldn't tell if he had seen them or not. Walking had been difficult that night. But the Lady was testing him, and he would prove up to the challenge. Since no one else speaks up right away, Cameron plunges ahead with his limited knowledge, and then with his own agenda. " Personally, I have many things I wish to talk to you about. But as a group we are here for different reasons, and the cat seems to have everyone elses tongue. Soooo...." "Two nights ago, north of the Tree there was apparently some kind of light show. Lights shooting up into the heaveans for close to an hour during the deepest part of the night. I did not see them myself, or rather, don't remember if I did, but we want to know if you know anything about them. We want to be sure the Tree is not in danger from them." "The other things I would like to talk about, can wait." Cameron lays out the facts as he knows them, and waits for Moana's response. Diplomacy 20 Sense Motive on her response 17, I am guessing it might be cryptic.

I decide maybe a random direction might not be best at the moment. The lights sound interesting, and I'm guessing the rest of the group may head that way to check them out. I leave the tree and go just a little ways out in that general direction, just to be out in the forest a little. I don't go too far though. (Is Pips following me? If so, I practice trying to sneak up on Pips once we're away from the Tree.)

Anyway, as I was saying, welcome to the Tree. Please do join us for dinner tonight. It would be good to hear your story, and I'll be happy to share ours as well."
While at Moana's Atlas makes his introduction, then he takes a moment to think about her question, Reading...hmm, no. Interpretation...maybe. Sight beyond...hmm, beyond what? The after world, the dead? Or maybe beyond our own sight, to where the light was. So either sight beyond or Interpretation... Before Atlas can finish his thought Cameron jumps in, not answering the question, but just saying what we want. Well played Cameron, lets put the onus back on her. Perception 16 Cameron sees the cards before she produces them. She has some skill with sleight of hand. Still doesn't mean she can't see the future. " So that's it? A simple walk to the Red Hills? There is a whole lot of chaos up in those hills. From what I remember the traders that traveled that road to the Scab were plenty paranoid and went well armed. With the Lady to guide and watch over us, I think we will be fine." " Before you go rest Moana, I wanted to ask you one more thing? Please?" " I understand that the Tree came to be when a Huge Treant rooted here as a memorial. Could you tell me, or better yet is these a written history of that time? I sense something off with the Tree and want to try to get to the bottom of it."
Assuming they leave and let Moana get her rest, Cameron talks to the others." I Think that the other voice we heard is unrelated to the lights, and more related to our dream. Two nights ago, I saw a young elven child ( Boy? Girl? DMs help me out) as I sat in the Temple of Alemi trying to wrap my head around Ciyradyl's ability to be so forgiving. As I sat there, meditating I was interrupted by an elven child. It ran about the place throwing a tantrum and saying that no one could hear it, and that what happened needed to be brought to light and justice done. I told the child I could see it and that I would help, but I needed more information. Someone here is not so forgiving, and that is the root of the rot we all saw in the dream. We need to know the history of this place and specifically that murder to figure this out. That's what I think anyway." Cameron also introduces himself to 'Osul, welcoming him to the Tree. Cameron is a halfling, about 3 feet tall. Normally he wears a long coat of military cut but with the insignia removed. Beneath it is a fine shirt of dwarven mail. Daggers are tucked into every available place that will hold them and a whip sits on his right hip, where a sword would be for a left handed wielder. Cameron seems much more dour than any other halfling you might have ever met.

Afterwards, when everyone regathers, "I believe we just witnessed an honest to god prophecy. I also agree with Cameron, it has to do with our dreams and not to do with the lights in the north. My reasoning for that is it references the south and our excitement is to the north. The Ancients Awake, might refer to the treants. Weeping loss could be a parent or someone weeping for the child, Cameron had a vision of. Also, Ancients awake could also be referring to elves, arn't they like almost immortal? Marionettes could refer to someone guiding actions like a puppet show, like us all being given dreams that only varied at the end. And the "Inevitability both foe and friend" it's always that, because if you know what's going to happen, it's a friend if it's good, and a foe it if it's not. Now that I've had my say about this, I'll let tho smarter than I discuss them, and only pitch in if I have a new revelation."

The group has mixed opinions of Moana and those opinions change during the visit. Zee quickly thought of writing down what was being said and stows the written word into her purse. Cameron asks her about the Tree and the History of it and that he feels there is something wrong. The woman smiles a thin smile and takes Camerons hand. Her grip is surprisingly strong and she bends his hand about looking at it intently. "You want to know. You feel do you?" She raises an eyebrow and releases Cameron's "Why ask me, why not speak with Ciyradyl Ilyndrathyl. It is her family. Be careful you do not bring more than poison creatures to our home." She stands to leave through the small door where she took the covered cage earlier and turns at the last moment. "You asked of the Blue lightning and that is what you learned of." with that she disappears through the door and closes it
The party exits and forms up to speak of what they just witnessed. Cameron and Carver both think what happened is related to their dream and not the blue lightning. Cameron relates a bit of what he has heard about the Red Hills and states that he feels the group does need to look into the blue flash Mack locates a small creek about 100 meters beyond the great tree's canopy. Crops? Possibly, but it is currently wild grasses

Atlas listens to Moana and shivers a bit when the deep voice comes from her body. When all is done he thanks her and goes outside to discuss with the group. "Well, I guess that second part could be tied to the dream, but I'm not one for puzzling out mysteries that are not impacting us right now. Now, what she did seem to confirm is that there is something up North where that light was coming from and we should probably go check it out. I'm not sure how something that far away can be a concern for the Tree, but better safe than sorry. Besides, I cannot take sitting around here that much longer.
"With that being said, I've heard plenty of stories about the Red Hills and none of them were good. We will likely die there, but I'm willing to roll the dice just to see what all the fuss is about. I'll see if I can purchase a map at one of the shops. Zee, you seem to have a way with the patrons of the Tree. Would you mind asking around to see if anyone has any experience making the trip? A guide, or even just some good advice, would be very welcome."
"Cameron, you seem to have the inside track on this dream stuff with your vision. It is clearly not my strength. Do you mind chasing down your theories while we prep for the trip? If you are able to make progress before we go then it could make this place much more interesting if we really do return."

Yes, 'Osul is a Druid. He even demonstrates Light and Create Water for those who want. Though, if any of you have met a Druid previously, then he isn't exactly the same thing. For example, he carries no potions, scrolls, or the like.
He, like his parents and siblings, are of the Culverwood. He has occasional contact with his family since finding his calling, but for the most part he has been learning about being a Druid by being with nature.
He likes experiencing things, and is eager to find out more about the adventure of which Atlas spoke.

I am pleasantly surprised to find out Osul is a druid. That life path fascinates me, and I have thought seriously about taking that path myself. I watch intently as he brings forth light and water, and ask questions about how he has lived with nature. I try to learn and take in as much as I can.
to Osul: "I was thinking about planting some trees out by a creek I found. Would you like to help? I'm completely open to any suggestions as to what we should plant. I was planning on starting right away, but I believe Atlas mentioned something about going on a picnic up north. So I'm not sure if we'll have time to plant any seeds before we leave or not."
If there is any spare time, I check around the Tree to see if anyone has seeds we can use. I probably start with Boolia, just because I like her.

Something is at play here, I'm just too dense to figure it out. Thank you for keeping an eye on our long-term plans...long-term is not my strength, but you seem to have a knack for it."
Turning to Zee, "North, a guide to the Red Hills where the light came from. I'm not comfortable with any of that other stuff about the South until Cameron gets back to us."
At dinner that night Atlas takes time to get to know 'Osul a little better, and he shares parts of his story as well. As Atlas talks to various party members through the night he lowers his voice a little and he asks them what their opinion of 'Osul is thus far. He is not shy about his line of questioning. He makes it clear to each that a druid would be a welcome addition to our group considering the miles of wilderness that we have to travel, not to mention our experience in the woods with Gaston. "A druid and a ranger, two ideal companions in this part of the Wold if you ask me."

Heading to the Hills - Co DM Dan K Thursday February 12th, 2015 10:27:11 PM
At dinner Osul fills the party in about himself. Atlas and Crosseye both are eager to get out and do something. Downtime is nice, but they've had their fair share for now.
Cameron expressed some concern that he might be bringing chaos, but with a cleansing breath is going to ask a bit more while the group makes final preparations to leave in the morning. Dungarth, is indeed alone and Cameron heads over. Dungarth lifts his wine and invites Cameron to join him with a nod to the chair opposite. Dungarth has little to share on the Tree's history. "I have heard Ciyradyl tell the tale perhaps two or three times. It is always a powerful experience as I am sure you know. Before that, I had heard the same from several master bards in Plateau City. Never with the same weight as she brings to bear, even when they employed their magic though." He takes a sip of his drink and concludes with a phrase that Cameron has heard far too often. "You should speak with Ciyradyl Master Cameron on these matters, for it is her history and family you pry into."
Mack discusses planting some trees near a creek not too far away with Osul and having the time, goes off to see what he can find to start such an endevoure. Meeting with Boolia first while nice does not get him too far. "Saplings? Only Laughingwater or Saide would have something like that. Before you go and try and start a forest though, you might want to ask Folbre Ilyndrathyl."
Carver is all for heading north as well. Something of such a powerful display only 3 days to the north is far too close to ignore. The greedy evil that lurks in the Hills certainly won't ignore it.
Zee works on someone to act as a guide into The Red Hills. Currently no one staying at or living at The Tree of Parting has been into the Red Hills. Many have journeyed the East West Road form Emerald City to Plateau City and some, like Moana, Miles and Lorifir have been south into the badlands, but not north. There is information to be had on what travels the lands to the north. None of them pleasant. Southern Red Hills are home to many warring factions of goblins and those things which prey on goblins for food; such as Dire Lions, Manticore, Trolls, Behirs and Wyvern or slave labor like: orc ogres, hobgoblins and giants.
Atlas assures Cameron that in his opinion the halfling cleric is not endangering or bringing doom to the Tree of Parting. Atlas look to get a map, but finds none of much detail. Still Saide is able to supply a coup large scale feature maps and waves away Atlas' attempt to pay anything form them. Edenmoor is the common fixture you can see on most of them. On the first map Edenmoor is the unnamed fort to the far right Tree of Parting
The group can easily get most anything they need for the journey after dinner between The Nest, the General Store and the Catacombs.
Morning comes in its promise of a glorious day of sunshine, scattered high clouds across the blue sky and a gentle breeze from the west carrying the smell of lilac.

Cameron sighs. " Everyone tells me to ask her, but I already have. She says that she totally forgives the people that attacked and killed her kin. But the dreams my friends and I are having, and the things that I am seeing around the Tree contradict her story. A young elven child runs frantically around the Temple of Alemi, smashing and wailing about justice not being served. The Dream we all had points to the Tree being infested with rats that chew at the support and structure of the Tree itself. Something is not right, Dungarth, and it looks as if I am going to have to ask her again about what that is. Thank you for your council." "On to the fine work you have already done for me, I wanted to ask for some other leather pieces. The Lady teaches that to be truly gifted with understanding, one must deprive their senses of sensation. I would like it is you could make me a helmet that would cover both my eyes , ears, nose and mouth. Leave small slits to breathe through, but deaden the senses associated with those organs as much as possible. Next a pair of mittens that will restrict my sense of touch with my hands. If you would begin them now I will take delivery of them in a few weeks, once we have established that nothing harmful will come at the Tree from the Red Hills. Please use the Lay's colors of black and red and her double helix symbol in the garments as they will be part of my devotions to her. I know your work will not disappoint. You are an exceptional craftsman." Cameron waits most of the night in the Inn, drinking slowly and thoughtfully wrestling with all the pieces of what he feels is an important puzzle. At around an hour to midnight he leaves and makes his way to the Temple of Alemi. He enters and takes a position again near the altar, silently contemplating the little he knows of the Tree's history. If he again sees the child he will attempt to learn more. Who the child is. Why they are upset. Who is to blame. What outcome do they desire. He knows that the Lady is with him, but he can not help but feel Alemi himself wants to showcase something here too. That his healing and forgiveness might somehow also be of use in resolving this rot at the Tree. At Midnight, vision or no, he retreats into the dark to pray to the Lady. He asks her to watch over their journey and help them return alive. He also asks her to guide him in how to ask the things he needs to ask to help her bring peace to this angry child.

After the evening ends, Zee once again looks for a quiet corner for a little prayer and meditation. Here she allows herself to try and "connect" with the higher power that drives her fate and explore her emerging powers. Zee lets her power leak out and take the shape of small figures and golden mists. She has learned from her last prayer time, and she takes precautions to not get caught.
((OOC: Zee is motivated by her need for belonging. The clerics of the Gods of Wold were well-meaning and pillars of faith, but they left her with a cruel woman who fronted for thieves and rogues. The Gods of Testing have been illustrated as monsters and boogeymen. So, Zee is opening her magic and heart to any power that will accept her and teach her how to wield her magic. I invite our DMs to play with this as they might.))

Before the evening ends, 'Osul catches Mack, thought not deliberately out of earshot of anyone else, "Mack, I'm happy to help. The Red Hills borders Culverwood, and if there is nothing seed or seedling to be found in the hills, I'm sure we could find something suitable if we cut back through part of The Wood. That said, the Tree stands more alone than any I have previously seen, and that bears investigation when we return. There may be something about the land or the Tree that makes it too difficult for anything else more sturdier than grasses to grow here. But in trying we will learn more than we do now."
More broadly he asks, "Also, are there any particular spells that you will be of good benefit for the trek?". If he is going to support the group he knows he'll need their input.
OOC: One week in and finding my feet. Thank you all for your welcome and patience.

Apologies all
Cameron speaks to Dungath about a few other items as will and the man readily agrees on all aspects. A few weeks should be enough time. During his prayers later in the night, Cameron notices the flash from the north himself. The display lasts for about 10 minutes as best as he can figure
Mack seeks out Folbre about planting trees about the Tree of Parting. The elf looks at him with a curious is not soul boring expression for nearly a minute with his fingers teepeed under his chin. He finally nods, "You may do so." Mack makes arrangements with Saide to procure some saplings which will take a couple weeks to bring in.
Zee speaks to Ciyradyl about her family, of which 2 others live here, Folbre and Hiflanyl. Zee finds herself quite unable to steer her anywhere in conversation. Ciyrdyl is always polite, charming and gracious as she speaks, answers and asks her own questions to Zee. How did the young girl end up so deep in the Eastern wood. She speaks in empathy on her upbringing and how far she has come and into such a beautiful young woman she is blossoming. On Ciyradyl's family, she will introduce Zee at breakfast tomorrow, Folbre and Hiflanyl are usually there early and tomorrow she will have them stay a bit later to meet you. "Truth be told though, I think of everyone here as my family and hope to include you some say" The Greenmage has not been seen in some time. The events that brought The Tree of Parting into being happened well over 200 years ago
Osul catches Mack about the Red Hills, asks about any particular spells he thinks would be useful and wonders on the oddity of a 500' plus Ironwood tree completely growing alone. The last part Mack can answer, The Tree of Parting was an ancient Treant from the Heart of the Culverwood. It came here following the Greenmage and took root in eternal sleep.
Carver offers his opinions on spells, healing. healing magic is always a good thing to have. Especially when you are about to enter the land of giants, ogre and trolls.
The group wakes in the morning and gets ready to head north. Final gear is checked packed and you make your way down, via a 30' square lift, to the ground some 120' below. The trek north begins and by days end the Tree of Parting is still visible nearly 16 miles away. The plains about the tree are easily traveled, the ground would certainly make excellent farmland. Cameron and Mack both find the grass to be quite polite to have stopped growing at about 18". The thick green blades are sturdy yet soft to the touch. Wildflowers and small bushes are littered about and in the day's journey the party crosses several streams and creeks. The group makes camp, sets watches and prepares in general for the evening and night ahead.

Cameron comments that he has seen the lights as well, last night during his prayers. He describes the display as best as he can to the others. As they walk he is able to answer 'Osul, since there is little else to occupy the time as they walk." Not that much to tell. Carver and I used to be soldiers with the Mailed Fist. His Great Aunt suggested he needed to be elsewhere to do the great things he was destined to do, and I needed to leave in order to return home and return the dwarf that raised me to the stone after he was murdered. Both of us were able to but out our contracts with some help from a cleric of Gargul and we were free from our obligations to the Fist. I wear the coat now because it fits me well and is quite comfortable. With the patches removed it is still quite a functional garment. Anyway, while preparing my 'uncle Morgan' for burial I was approached by an agent of Jancassis and asked if I really wanted to pay back the person or persons that had done me, my family and my 'uncle' so much hurt. I said I did, and became a cleric of the Lady of Vengeance. She stripped me of all of the skills and knowledge I had gained in my training with the Fist and took me as a new initiate to her order. Now I am on a path that will end either with my death, or revenge on those that have done me and my kin so much harm. Along the way I spread her message as best I can." Zee is lost in thought on the way out of the Tree, she wears a puzzled expression. As the group starts to camp, Zee is firm about pointing out that she will be making a group meal. As always, the meal looks like a pitiful broth made from trail rations and water, but tonight it tastes smells spicy and meaty. The meal reminds you of lively discussions, fights around the table, and old stories told by elderly men that ate peppers raw.
"Okay, it is not the right thing to say, but I will say it!' Zee huffs a sigh, "Ciyradyl, and the other elves are all wrong. Something about the Tree and the elves is wrong, and I am mad. Why are we getting dreams about this? Why is it that Ciyradyl smiles and laughs off bad stuff? There is something rotten about the whole thing and I don't know why, but the Tree is in trouble."

Atlas is in great spirits as the group heads out. He is talkative along the way and willing to chat up anyone that wants to talk. He tells Zee that training on the Kukri can happen after dinner, but not while they're walking. "If we're able to train while we travel then we're traveling too slow to begin with. Let's make ground and we'll keep your training going at night."
As the group stops Atlas sets up his spot for the night. He reluctantly accepts Zee's switch to first watch, mostly because he cannot quickly think of a reason to argue the point. What I wouldn't give for a quicker wit.

The Group makes camp and the night passes without an unusual things occurring. Zee brings up her thoughts on the elves and the Tree and all of those who live there. How can they simply be so happy, The Tree is in trouble, it is the only explanation for the dream and the cryptic message from Moana. Atlas and Carver find themselves agreeing that something must indeed be wrong. Osul refrains from making any conjectures on how elves are supposed to be as he has not known any, what he considers long enough. And how long is long enough when it comes to a 300 maybe 400 year old person?
Cameron and Carver see a vibrantly bright blue bolt blasting into the sky for 10 minutes which happens at midnight. The bolt seems to be perfectly straight and as you watch, it seems to pulse a little. You cannot discern a top, as it seems to continue into the stars themselves. There is no sound that either of you can hear and them 10 minutes later it simply is gone.
Morning arrives and the party continues. By days end, the group will be entering the Red Hills. Moving across the grasslands is again very pleasant and easy. Small stands of trees are now being passed and the streams and creeks are picking up in frequency. The soft running cool water is always refreshing. On this day, sharp eyes spot a small group of deer to the west at a small stand of trees. A hawk or perhaps falcon riding the thermals high above and loping far to the east and heading south a coyote.

I suggest that we head to Edenmoor fort (if it not too late) as it seemed to be the closest settlement to the Red Hills.(just south part on the maps) We might be able to get more information there, before we head into Red Hills. At least be able to resupply.
On the first night watch with our new friend the Druid, Osul, I try to get to know him better. I ask what is a Druid all about and how does one start to follow, the path of one. All I know about them is they are one with nature and was told they seem to have a special bond with it. But how they have this bond or learned or natural? I tell him I am one that respects and live in peace with nature as I have been taught. All my knowledge I have is learned, some did come easier they others, but I needed to learn it and not just come to me like it seems to with magic guys. I have been learning over many years with my grandfather in my youth.

This time Cameron does not put Crosseye off. It is a beautiful day and a good time to talk of Jancassis.
" To me, a small and rather weak halfling, she is the equalizer. When a wrong is done to someone that can not protect themselves and they pray to her, she is able to see that justice visits their wrongdoer. As Zee was correct in pointing out that Jancassis more nefarious side is worshiped by the Drow, the dark elves. To them she visits what they see as vengeance on the people and races that exiled them below. To me she is a resort of the weak. They can count on her to not be bribed, to not be dissuaded by emotion when she visits retribution on wrongdoers. She also hates anyone who cheats on others or makes a promise only to break it. That is why it was of utmost importance to me that I told Gaston that I would help him in the woods, but made clear to him I would not lie about it. Had I sworn to get him into the Chancers and then told the truth, as we did to the Council, he would have had every right to go to her temple and call for my head. There is a very good chance she would have taken him up on it too. As an example to other priests that follow her." " It isn't an easy road. I said I would be her voice in the Wold and she in turn promised to first off make Morgan whole again so that he could be returned to the Stone with honor. Second she promised that I would be tested, over and over. Some tests I would pass and in passing would learn what I needed to know to grow stronger and more capable of taking the revenge I want against those that have killed everyone I have cared about. Some tests, like the venom i ingested the other night, to help me see more clearly what was wrong at the Tree and how to fix it, I would fail. But, in failing I still learn. I have learned that no matter the pain or the weakness in the body, a strong mind and a determined will are still formidable weapons. Once the last of my strength returns and I have my full health back, I will be stronger in knowing that when I am physically weak, I can still accomplish things through my strong will." " If I follow her worship out to the more extreme of her followers, and pass the test to become one, I will become immune to the venoms I now use to strengthen myself, I will also be able to act without fear that remorse will stay my hand while I do her work. That frightens me a little, I have to admit. my empathy and my conscience are what makes me want to do her work, makes me want to help others who have no other recourse but to ask for the Lady's intervention. I am afraid that if I lose my sense of remorse, I won't be able to do that clearly when I have to. Perhaps this is just another of her tests and I will be able to overcome my fears." Cameron tells Crosseye this openly, because he knows that some of the others might wonder how he can be moral and claim to be good, while following what is often thought of as a goddess of murder.
OOC On the wand, probably best if you still hang onto it Crosseye. Carver, myself, 'Osul and you can use it. So long as we can get to it easily and can say, pluck it off your belt if we need to I think we will be OK that way. The bonus is if 'Osul and I get knocked out or separated from the rest of the group, you can still heal people. From what I can see we should have the recruiting wand of CLW with 20 charges on it for getting 7 of 8 players again. Is that your read too DMs Dan and Corsario?

Edenmoor was quickly discussed and ruled out as a route. The Fort lies over 150 miles to the east.
Carver has a tent and while a couple of you can squeeze in with him and actually get some sleep, not everyone is getting in. For those without a tent, it's going to be a wet night. Thankfully the rain does not look to get here before actual nightfall, so there is time to have a warm meal and really think about how miserable it is going to be. The open grasslands provide little in the way of shelter, but the group can camp out under a small copse of trees. None of the survivalists believe the storm will bring anything but rain. The group makes sure they are not in a lowland, or near a creek or stream that may overflow and do the best they can with the sparse trees.
Rain it does, a steady cold rain that lasts for nearly the entire night. The temperature also drops with the front moving through and those outside the tent, now soaked thoroughly find themselves shivering. Welcome to the Red Hills.
Carver's Tent can hold 4 medium folks Whoever does not get to sleep in the tent is fatigued on the following morning
The sun rises in a way, with the rain slacking off to a light drizzle. The Red Hills look bleak and dead in the dreary morning light. Cameron's makeshift shelter is not enough to keep the rain out, and his night is wet and tiring. As he prays at midnight, he asks Jancassis for aid and changes his magic weapon spell out for an endure elements spell, hoping to stave off the worst of the chill from being soaked. He wakes groggy and tired, but still ready to continue. He considers this just another of Jancassis tests to see if he is worthy of her sponsorship. Had he noted the weather sooner the day before they might have made more suitable shelters for it. Jancassis had gifted him with the awareness of a hunter, but he had failed to heed it, thus he would be tested. Today he hopes to do better. Survival 14 Perception as they walk for the day. 26

I don't mind sleeping out in the rain, and I definitely didn't bring a tent. I plan on sleeping outside in the rain so the warriors aren't fatigued. I do make sure my banjo is fairly protected from the rain though. It's not a perfect instrument by any means, so I'm not super concerned. I let the others know I will stay out in the, not that I am not use to it. Growing up in a Forrest with grandfather I spend a many days out in the wet doing things. Being In the rain brings back many memories of theses days. I tell Zee, a lady should stay warm and dry, plus we need her well rested to make the good breakfasts for us like she has.
During my watch I try to stays warm and as dry as possible what ever that might be. I also go over the conversation with Cameron I had that day about his god. Seems interesting to me. The way he explained it and told it makes his god not seem all that bad. In fact a protector of the weak and innocent. I wonder what the other god are like I need to know more about these gods. I will have to ask Zee what she thinks when I can.
In the morning I help with the breakfast doing what ever Zee might need help with. I figure it is better to help then argue with her about making the meals, plus she seems to like doing it. "What ever makes her and others happy" I say and smile to myself.
"From the feel of the wind and air it seems to me that this weather and wet weather is going to be here for awhile, but we need to push on, but maybe if we can or do find shelter along the way will camp and rest up for a bit." I tell the others as we pack up and get ready to break camp. I ask the others to keep an eye out for anything. I take the lead and start off again in the direction of where we believe the light is. Carver and Zee use the tent, everyone else spends a rather miserable sleepless night in the cold rain and the morning finds those individuals fatigued, but with delightful memories and nostalgia. Zee makes breakfast, cold this time at preparation, but again with just a pinch of magic, it is delicious. The group strikes camp after Zee thoroughly dries everyone. Not only do you start dry, but Zee can keep it up all day and everyone stays essentially dry. The light drizzle breaks into a light rain now and then, but Zee is always right there to take care of its dampening effects.
The ground and your footing is a different issue. The red hills have little vegetation and with the rain the hard ground becomes slick and ice like in some areas where the clay has been exposed. The problem is, that these areas are practically invisible until you step on them. There are some small trees that soul identifies as Apple and shay pine, two of the heartier trees he knows. None are larger than Carver, indicating how unfriendly the ground is to such things. Small scrub brush and bushes are also clustered about the trees. Everyone please roll Acrobatics check DC 10 failure indicates a slip and fall at some point
Heading north and on target to the last visual of the blue light is pretty easy in the open terrain of the hills. Crosseye keeps in a relatively straight line, going from hilltop to hilltop and finding the easier crossing of the few streams still running from the rainfall thus far. Visually, the group spies very little. The party seems to be the only creatures willing to move about in this weather. Zee is happy to keep people clean and dry. A few times she seems to get lost in the swirls of silver and gold light, but she refocuses and finishes. As you walk Zee nearly stumbles and cartwheels her arms to stay afoot.

Atlas thanks Zee for the constant assistance with the wet clothes. His cloak does a great job of keeping the rain off him during the day, but even it needs Zee's assistance after a number of hours have passed.
Throughout the day Atlas seems to be stumbling about tripping on everything and taking a fall or two along the way. Fatigue is certainly taking his toll on him from the night before.
When Atlas sees the beetle ahead he confirms Zee's finding. "Yep Zee, that is a slicer beetle. Dangerous buggers. Everyone form up. I'm having a hard enough time walking on my own, I'm not going to take a chance closing in on that thing. Besides, if it sees us as a group maybe it will have second thoughts. OOC To clarify for you Crosseye, the fatigue effects you by taking away 2 from strength and dexterity. So your dexterity based attacks (like the bow) take a -1 to hit penalty. Your strength based attacks take a -1 to hit penalty and a -1 damage penalty. ( for you with a 2 handed weapon like the great axe, just subtract 2 from your strength and refigure the whole thing, because it will change you damage number) Your AC will be affected as well by the dexterity penalty, so -1 to that too. Your CMD will be at -2 since both strength and dexterity affect it..
Net effect is for a physical character like you, your attacks and AC are a little lowered, and you can't charge. For a small already weak guy like me or Mack we are pretty much physically useless to you guys and it is a wonder I can even carry my gear. So yeah, hiding from the bug was a real thing for me.

The Beetle heads rights at the group, now identified by several of the party as a Slicer Beetle. A pretty nasty vermin and always hungry. Atlas calls out a quick game plan, Zee, 'Osul, behind Carver and I. Crosseye, feel free to give him a sting before he gets here. Mack/Cameron, just do your thing." Crosseye prepares his bow to fire and Zee casts a bolt of mystic energy, striking the bug. Osul casts a spell as well and soon the entire area about the green eyed druid is plunged into a misty shroud spreading out 20' in all directions. [i]A misty vapor arises around you. It is stationary. The vapor obscures all sight, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. A creature 5 feet away has concealment (attacks have a 20% miss chance). Creatures farther away have total concealment (50% miss chance, and the attacker cannot use sight to locate the target).[/] Cameron takes his position, behind the large fighters and Mack pulls his harmonica and starts walking off by himself while playing a particularly horrid tune on purpose to get the vermin to attack him
The swirling mists make it impossible for Crosseye to take his shot and Mack is lost to everyone's sight as well. All is quiet, save your own movement for a brief few seconds.
The Slicer beetle suddenly appears out of the mists, right in front of Atlas and Carver.

So the slicer beetle is indeed large, as big as Carver at least. Cameron's whip is useless against it. First it is too large to trip. Then it is not using a weapon so it can't be disarmed. It's carapace is almost as thick as plate armor, so the whip won't even dent it. That's pretty much completely out. But Osul's spell has brought it in close, now all Cameron needs to do is touch it. Calling on Jancassis's mastery of poison, Cameron calls out her name and touches the beetle, attempting to poison it. Touch attack hits AC 14 it does 1 point of constitution damage Fortitude save DC 13 to avoid 94% so I didn't miss. (1= strength, 2=dexterity, 3=constitution, 4=intelligence, 5=wisdom, 6=charisma same order as on my character sheet for ability affected by the poison touch) ( Providing that the beetle is already within touch distance. Ouch! I just lay here for a while, very confused by what just happened.
OOC: I guess a picture of the encounter might be helpful. It seemed I walked away from the group, who was being attacked by the giant beetle. I would imagine it can't attack both sides at once. But I'm not real clear on my position here, or just how big this thing was. I obviously wasn't attempting to jump over it's pincers. But if the main group is being attacked by the pincers, and I can't see them, my assumption would be it also can't see me.
Also not real clear on attacks of opportunity, and how they work when something can't see us, either due to mist OR due to size. That might just be me and lack of understanding of the rules though.
Lastly, the acrobatics skills seems to indicate I can do this thru an opponents space without incurring attacks-of-opportunity. Maybe I didn't word something correctly? I would have spelled out all of the modifiers more clearly, but honestly couldn't answer many of those questions without more information.

OOC OK, DM Dan said in his first post that he would use the terms of Pathfinder literally to describe the beetle. He said it was large, which makes it 10 by 10. This also gives it 10 foot reach, which is what I assumed through the whole fight. You have to become familiar with some of these things and not just jump around like a Mexican jumping bean. The description of the fog says that anything beyond 5' is not targetable by sight, so ALL ranged attacks are out, unless like Zee you are going to stand right in front of it and cast spells, pretty brave I might add. The truth is a little different. Look up a slicer beetle in the SRD. It has no reach, as best as I can tell because it is not at all flexible, making it like Carver who is large, but uses small weapons and has small arms for his size, thus no reach. If you don't understand what is happening and need more description, ask in OOC. I know as a DM I would rather my players have a good idea what's going on so that the can make appropriate actions. I am sure Dan would have described it more. AoO and acrobatics I will send an email. 8)
IC "Wait 'Osul, save your magic. All of you with wounds come over here, and allow Jancassis's power heal your wounds." ( Since no one is unconscious or bleeding to death we can take a moment to gather). Cameron then channels the power of his goddess to heal their wounds. Cameron glows softly with a sickly green light. The light spreads to envelop all of his wounded companions, far enough from the beetle that it is not affected as well. They all feel a brief sensation of nausea, then their wounds knit and heal. ( Channel energy for 14 points of healing) Cameron then turns his attention to the Vermin. Not necessarily one of Jancassis favored creatures, but vermin play a role in the venomous powers she wields. He quickly removes the Large sections of carapace that are the wing covers, and the equally large but more delicate wings beneath them. "Carver, can you carry these as we move away from the corpse, like 'Osul suggests. I agree it may draw predators and I want no more fighting while we are all this tired. Jancassis also teaches me how to survive. Though not poisonous, this is certainly a test for me from her, to see if I have what it takes to survive here. These sections plus your tent should allow all of us to sleep dry tonight." " For that, my Lady of Vengeance I thank you."

OOC: Again, not an expert on these rules, so feel free to correct me.....
The beetle is large. 10', as you say. As you note about the spell: "anything beyond 5' is not targetable by sight." Since "sight" is specified, I'm assuming we're going by "eyes". Makes a BIG difference on a creature that's 10' long. If you guys are on one end being attacked by it's pincers, and I'm on the other side and can't see any of you, I'm more than 5' away from it's eyes (again, making assumptions that it's eyes aren't in the middle of its body, because I'm not sure what this looks like). If it can't see me, I'm assuming it can't make an attack of opportunity on me, because it probably doesn't even know I'm there. I'd have to read up more on the specifics of "attacks of opportunity" in out-of-the ordinary situations to know for sure. If I was invisible and doing the same thing, would it get an attack of opportunity?
I was also making some logical assumptions that a heavily armored beetle can't physically bend enough to grab something on it's back...... again, could be wrong. Depends on the beetle.
I'm a little confused by the seemingly derogatory comment about me jumping around like a "Mexican jumping bean" when I make one simple attempt to use a skill I put some slots in to, and make one jump. ;)

OOC Almost all of the combat assumptions you have made use common sense, and thus are wrong. When you get a chance, read through the combat section. Yes it is long, but it will explain the size issues and the "it can't see me because I am behind it" thoughts you are having. In the real world you would be pretty on target, but as a game it has much more simplified rules so that each combat is similar, thus easier to run and get used to, not a determination of how lithe and able to see behind itself a fantastic and make believe creature like a basalisk for instance, is. Creatures have no facing, thus they can "see" in all directions. This is why the 3.5 "backstab" of the thief was converted into the Pathfinder "sneak attack" of the rogue. Both are precise attacks taking advantage of the opponents limited view or attention span, but are worded and described differently. Sorry about the jumping bean thing. You just seem to bounce from one idea in combat to another so much. You are trying to find something that works and until you do that's pretty much what you have to do. I just find it amusing to think of a halfling bouncing around in combat trying out so many different ideas to find a trick that works.

OOC: At some point the systems went from saying the character was in a specific place and facing a specific direction, to saying you occupy a specific space and can react equally to things going on around you. As far as jumping up, over or onto something (unfriendly) is concerned, it is no easy thing in this system, and as I understand it the chances of landing prone beside/beneath your target should definitely give you pause for thought.

Zee, if you have any of those magic arrow spells please be ready to use them if you see Crosseye fire. 'Osul, let's keep our vision clear since Cameron is so far away. Cameron doesn't attack the ogres... the halfling cleric approaches them, and speaks to them in a strange tongue. The ogres stop, and look at him with muddled intellects, and answer in the same language. "Insect bite us. Insect hurt us. We will hurt insect. We will eat insect. Heal us and you can eat with us." Atlas is the first to assume a defensive position, and start organizing the rest in case the ogres attack. 'Osul quickly asses the creatures and name them. He knows them to be dangerous, and simple. Mack goes next to Atlas, and prepares to help his friend if needed. Zee seems very affected still by her choices, and don't move from her place. Carver also move to defend the group if needed. The ogres eyes follow the centaur as he moves, but not aggressively. Crosseye also identifies them. He is right, they can provide you with information if you play your cards right. To a trained eye the movements of all the group seem organized and purposeful. They are learning to fight as a team. --- Speeding up things a little... Cameron channels, and the ogres wounds close. A clean stump remain in one of the ogres, which look at it without fully understanding where his arm is. The other ogre closes his big head to Cameron, his fetid breath enveloping the halfling cleric. He speaks in Giant, Cameron translating to all of you. "The hurt goddess. She is powerful." He takes a step back and moves towards the remains of the beetle. "I'll hurt it!" He starts pummeling and kicking the beetle. The other ogre stops staring at his stump and joins him. After some minutes of brute violence they stop. "We can eat now." They use their hands to grab some of the innards of the beetle, and the one with two arms go to Cameron. He puts a hand holding insect viscera in front of him. "You are friend. You eat with us." The one with one arm eats happily some kind of insect internal organ, green and slimy. Cameron doesn't channel, because he can't any more unless they catch him before he heals the others. He does however still have most of his spells for the day. Since the creatures seem to know Jancassis, Cameron is overt in his conversion of his spells into cures, casting one on the two armed creature( healing 4 points) and the remaining one on the maimed creature(healing 10 points) . Formalities out of the way, Cameron creates water in Jancassis name for the creatures and himself to drink while eating. Then he gets down to business. " What are your names? I am called Cameron. We have seen the lights in the sky at night. Do you know what they mean? We are going to the place that the lights come from, do you know where that is? What other dangers live in these hills?" Cameron asks the questions slowly and clearly because his audience does not seem to be that bright. He makes sure that it is clear that HE wants to know these answers and that HE is a servant of Jancassis. He makes sure that his holy symbol is always visible when he speaks to them.

Cameron feels sickened at the sight of the ogres eating, but braces himself and accept the food offering from them (well, the word "food" is used very loosely here). The rest see him chewing, and a green tint appearing on his face, which shows the disgust he is feeling. But he doesn't throw up, and don't seem to be dying (at least not right away). The ogres smile at the water, and drink greedily. Then answer the small cleric questions, in giant, with Cameron translating. "We are brothers. We are friends. We saw the light, and we came to look for food. Many others coming too. Many food coming too." The ogre then growls to the others, mainly in Carver direction (with a glance to Mack). The two armed one continues talking, but now Cameron don't translate. The other ogre hears his "brother", and stops to growl at the others too. Cameron only: Highlight to display spoiler: {"Are they friends? Will they eat? Do you want us to hurt and eat them? He talks to you, and even if you don't know Giant you know what he is saying. "Eat!" Crosseye looses it there and then. He turns and pukes, unable to resist the sight of the slimy entrails in the dusty ground, and the idea of eating that putrid "delicacy". But the ogre ignores him and turns back to the beetle, looking for more "food", not paying attention to you. They only grimace and make noises when Mack start to play, and after a couple seconds throw some insect innards in his general direction. Everyone is a critic. And then his one-armed brother reach for the beetle head, and tears one of the razor sharp jaws off. He points to you all and asks for something. Cameron translate to you. "He wants for you to fetch him a strong branch, straight and not too wide." He turns and starts ripping other pieces form the insect innards. 'Osul discovers they seem to like the most "wet" parts of the insect. He also notices they seem to be affected by the poison of the insect too, but are too big (or dumb) to let them stop them from eating. You all can't believe he is so near of the Ogres, and seeing all the grisly details, without showing any sign of discomfort or revulsion. Atlas feels how the strength is coming back to him. He hasn't feel so tired in a long time. Zee, next to Carver, notices the one armed ogre has a sack hanging from what would pass from his belt. The sack seem to move by itself. Carver looks all around the place (everything to avoid making eye contact with the beasts). Strong branches, straight and not too wide. I will tell them it is the least you can do because you refused their 'offering'. I'm going to say my goodbyes to them and we can cover some more ground. But now, looking back, I have a twinge of guilt that maybe we should have found out exactly what was in that bag. I voice my concerns to Pips -- anyone nearby may hear my temptation to almost go back and find out.

OOC: I saw your pop quiz Osul... is it this note in the Survival Skill? "Special: If you are trained in Survival, you can automatically determine where true north lies in relation to yourself."
Mack is fatigued. A fatigued character can neither run nor charge and takes a --2 penalty to Strength and Dexterity. Doing anything that would normally cause fatigue causes the fatigued character to become exhausted. After 8 hours of complete rest, fatigued characters are no longer fatigued.

As they continue along after the arm, 'Osul puts voice to something that didn't make sense. "I am trying to get my head around why the brothers would deliberately poison themselves for a little moisture. Are the circumstances in the Hills so dry that moist bug innards are a viable alternative - that doesn't appear to be the case so far - or are they relying on their great size and fortitude to spare them most of the ill effects, or is it something else?" ---------- Thanks Eric! That is what I was looking for! Now I'm not going to waste 'Osul's spell slot on something he effectively inherently already knows.
Carver (John C) AC 16, AC 18 with shield, CMB 6, CMD 17, HP 21/21 Character Sheet Friday March 6th, 2015 8:47:20 AM "There are certain races and even some cultures that believe that if you eat vital parts of your defeated enemies, you gain their power for yourselves. I imagine that it is so ingrained in their lives that they have no reason to disbelieve that eating doesn't give them that power. I also expect that it is true in some cases, some parts of mythical creatures are reported to be beneficial to those who eat them, and in their simple minds, it is true in all cases. Oh, and Cameron, next time, please don't help those whom we will most likely be called upon to kill, they were not people who we should be chummy with." Carver is not enthused with Cameron's new friends.

OOC Now, as to why we keep aiding what should be a "for free" skill. In our last adventure we went into part of the Culverwood. For a druid like you, who worships the wood that would be OK. For heathens like us who don't the wood is not amused and tries to redirect you out, when that fails it tries to kill you. We had to actually make checks to find north and stay on our heading and to avoid any pitfalls in the wood. Now we just do it because we like to think we learn from our mistakes, like feeding the evil ogres. So help me, if they weren't evil I was bringing two new disciples back to the tree with me. Once you comb their hair and brush their teeth they clean up real nice. Let THAT be a test of how tolerant and forgiving the tree is ... Um or something like that. <takes evil mastermind hat off> Um yeah. IC Cameron looks at Carver, " What? They were hurt, and if we didn't play nice they would have tried to kill us. They surely would have eaten Mack. And we just got our butts kicked by a monster bug. Another fight right there would not have been good. Besides, we learned some valuable things. We learned that they are dumber than dirt, like the bug but smart enough to talk. We learned that the lights ARE drawing things to them, and that we will probably find more not good and really tough monsters there. And we learned how to not get eaten by said monsters by telling them we know the Brothers. Evil or not, they now consider me a friend and might stop other monsters from hurting me, and my friends. Jancassis teaches survival over all and that was a big step toward surviving in a place that will chew us up and spit us out. Their natures and their harsh lifestyle have made them evil, sure. I could probably redeem them, given time. I think we did alright." At this point the delay poison spell wear off and Cameron excuses himself. A few moments later, after the sounds of him being violently ill come from behind the bushes he returns, magically refilling his water skin. He looks pale but he starts looking better after a few sips of water. " As to why they eat the bugs, I have a few theories. Carver's idea seems to be a good one, but might fall a little short. The Lady of Vengeance is known to test her followers through poison. In overcoming the poison they become stronger. Since the Brothers clearly know of her and probably follow her in their limited way, they might be seeking her favor. Second, the bug took from them, so by taking from the bug they fulfill another of her tenets. Third, they really are not very smart, they didn't even have individual names. I do think their devotion was real though, so it might be best if I do any further negotiations on this trip. Thank Jancassis that Uncle Morgan taught me giant." "Finally some people also poison themselves on a regular basis. It sharpens your senses and sometimes grants you insight you might not otherwise have as parts of you start working to defeat the poison before it kills you. Soon, I will have to undergo a testing ceremony to become more devoted to The Lady, and it will involve all manner of poisons. If I pass the tests she will take me further into her faith and teachings. If I fail I may die. I welcome any chance to experience new poisons to prepare myself for that test." Survival 6, no aid another bonus, sorry Perception 29

I let it all soak in. Having a very strong interest in poisons myself, I am quite willing to help provide poisons to Cameron later.... as many and as much as possible. Actually, my interest is more in anti-venoms, but baby steps. :)
Letting Cameron negotiate for us concerns me, as his path seems to be going a different route than I usually like to take.... but I keep quiet for now, and just try to get a feel for how other people react to his speech. I DO like the path of staying alive, in most cases.
'Osul (Graham) AC:10 (T:10, FF:10), CMD:1, HP 14/14 - Additional Friday March 6th, 2015 3:10:22 PM
----OOC---- David: Maybe I chose my words poorly. I though I had read it somewhere, but could not put my fingers on it now I was considering having 'Osul commune for the spell, and hoped someone else might know of it. It was not intended as any sort of dig or slight, and I'm all in favor of the Aiding another - 'Osul even attempted this in the bug combat, however unsuccessfully. He is not immune to the misdirections of the Wood, and there were times in his back-story where having someone with him would have made a world of difference, but that would have likely meant he was a part of the society/circle, and that in turn would have made him unplayable as a PC. Consequently he has some limitations - such as having no understanding or experience with any magical items (Which I'm hoping some other characters have begun to realize - such as his response to the earlier discussion about the wand). When the Wood has turned him around, and he finally grasps it, he becomes evermore curious and cautious in equal measure. He used to just be curious, but he has also learned something from his mistakes. ----IC---- The druid nods in agreement with Carver - until the point the discussion turns to the new friends. Then he nods and agrees with everything he hears Cameron telling Carver, and the same when he addresses his own question. "Thank you, Cameron. That was considered and well put."
'Osul responds with a smile if he notices Zee looking in his direction, but she seems to him to be lost in her own thoughts. "Maybe she is thinking of spells.", he thinks, momentarily, before focusing again on the path to camp.

OOC Oh, I just meant it as a little back story, something you and conversely 'Osul might not have heard. No slight taken, I and Cameron sometimes try make things seem more amusing than they really are. I thought you got a pass from your home wood messing with you. If not, you are not as useful as you first seemed and slip a little down the " who I need to save to live" list. 8) Just kidding, I don't write that list down, people might not understand. Oh, and so you know, John and I are DMs too, so we can see posts to the DM, whether we choose to or not. Don't put anything life changing in there 8). We just have to act like we don't see them and not act on what we see. That's not too hard. Unless the post makes me start thinking in which case I may lose my white knuckled grip on reality.
IC Cameron is almost stunned that Osul listened to the whole explanation he gave. Nobody else ever did. Usually once he said something involving Jancassis name everyone went "oh no, not again" inside their head and turned to look at the pretty flowers. This guy might be a good one to have around. Besides he kept Carver alive and could probably talk to the Tree and find out about the kid only Cameron could see. The Tree wouldn't throw up a big smokescreen like the residents were doing, would it?

----OOC-only---- I hadn't heard that story, but now I have. Sounds like it would have been a great rite of passage for all the characters. 'Osul hadn't heard that, and still hasn't (OOC post). :) the name of the game is compartmentalization. And not so much a Free Pass as a Huge Bonus.
I'm acting on the assumption that anyone who reads the Private DMs posts is not having a reaction to it - much as 'Osul now doesn't suddenly know the PCs have previously ventured in the Culverwood.
P.S. I feel this may peter out soon, but would other players prefer it was moved off the game board?
