Consecration

DM Kathy

Toston examines the mummy hand for any kind of coded message, but there doesn't seem to be anything. Just a gross. nasty, withered hand. He asks Boggs about a contract.

Boggs nods sagely. "Of course, sir," he says aloud, tapping the side of his nose with a forefinger. "Discretion is a watchword! No paperwork of any kind; that I promise."

That would seem to be that. You leave the Scrum, headed for the shop in Dockside. You get turned around momentarily, but find the place without too much trouble. It's a very small shop with a dingy front window and a sign reading "Captain Dak's Charms and Sundries." You step inside.

Sailors are a superstitious lot, and this store seems to cater to those superstitions. You see several "lucky" rabbit's feet, sachets of pennyroyal and coriander, hazel twigs, and more. A small rack displays medalions with prayers inscribed to Alemi and Domi and Wardd. And on the counter is a jar marked "powdered silver."

Ashley had essentially ignored the mummy hand, figuring it for less than what it was. More than likely, it was simply a corpse hand that had been wrapped in linens and desiccated over time with salt. Regardless, he moved along with the group to Dockside. Of all of the parts of Dirt City, Ashley spent a lot of his here. when they entered the shop, the smuggler kept his eyes open fro trouble, and got his mind to working on recalling any superstitions he had heard sailing that involved silver.

Var takes one last, longing look at the mummy hand, and then follows the group out of the scrum. Along the way, he watches the city and its people. In the wild, a good hard rain would wash away debris and leave the world cleaner; Dirt City, however, seemed somehow dirtier after the morning's storm.

Stepping into the store, Var chooses an isle at random and attempts to get a good line of sight on the party, in case of trouble, (Perception 10) but quickly becomes interested in all the various curios and baubles on the shelves.

Toston enters the shop and glances at the curios. Though Toston had spent a good deal of time dockside and had walked by Captain Dak's on several occasions this was his first time setting foot in the shop. He looks for a proprietor or clerk and for potential threats then searches his memory for nautical superstitions involving silver and what a fair price for a measure would be.

Indicating the charm rack, Toston says, "The priest was right about nobody appreciating Ffloy, despite the fact that Sail Days are considered holy by Ffloy I don't see one of these prayer medallions dedicated to Him. However, I do see many for Domi and Alemi."

Okay, first of all, before I forget again, let's have some XP! For Scene 3 (talking with Brother Elthorn), everybody except Justin/Roy gets 200 XP (Justin hadn't joined the game yet at that point). For Scene 4 (the undead fight), everybody including Justin/Roy gets 700 XP.

With varying degrees of reluctance, you leave the fascinating mummy hand behind and turn your attention to procuring the powdered silver. Roy and Talanthrel take up positions outside the shop, keeping an eye out for trouble. The rest of the group goes in.

Ashley and Toston think about sailor superstitions. You both know that powered silver is commonly used in low-level divine rituals and spells. It is a component in holy water, for example, and it seems to be a component for this consecration ritual. For that reason, powdered silver is popular among sailors who prefer to make their own good-luck charms. It is doubtful that powdered silver, in the hands of a non-cleric, will do anything but cost money and make a mess, but some sailors swear by the stuff. It isn't at all unusual to find it in a place like this.

The man behind the counter is a middle-aged human with a weathered face and gnarled hands. He might be a retired sailor, but it's hard to say for sure. An unlit pipe is clamped between his teeth. "A'ternoon," he says around the pipe-stem.

"Afternoon. What's the going price on your silver here?"

The smuggler lazily gestures towards the powdered silver supply in the store, before looking back to the salty man and meeting his gaze. There was no point in dancing around the subject when it came to one salted sea dog to another. Just business.

Var is looking for something with a tie to nature. He finds several herbs and twigs, although no holly or mistletoe. He does find a few yew twigs, and of course there are the hazel twigs you spotted on your way in.

Brother Elthorn grumbles as he prepares for the ritual. "Might let a fellow have a drink," he mutters as he sorts out his herbs and oils.

Var asks about healing. "Again?" he says. "Oh, very well. You have to help me with this, though."

So, you assist with the ritual. Mostly this involves standing in a specific spot and sprinkling silver or burning incense or reading a prayer when Brother Elthorn cues you. It's actually kind of interesting, although it would be pleasanter in better weather. It takes several hours to complete, and the skies are noticably darker by the time you're finished.

When the ritual is concluded, a warm, sweet-smelling breeze seems to waft across the grounds, soon replaced by the biting wind and the smell of the Lotophagi.

Brother Elthorn peers into his book. "I guess that's it," he says. "Gather round." He says a brief prayer, and everyone is healed 6.

Brother Elthorn leads the way back into the chapel and demands his wine, which Gilmek produces for him. "You gotta get the nasty one," he says, pouring himself a generous goblet-full. "It's smarter. Ashley assist with the ritual with little to no comment, though he perks up at the thought of hunting this nasty undead. First, however, he needed to eat, badly. His stomach rumbled as he looked down at himself, grimacing.

"I don't mind a night hunt, but I haven't eaten yet. I'm low on supplies. I just got back into port a few days ago. I'll make sure to stock up next chance we get, but for now, I could use a bite to eat."

Avin once more pulls out the enchanted lantern ready to make his own argument concerning the night hunt when his own stomach growled in response to Ashley's. His facial scars fade slightly amidst a flush of embarassment tinting his cheeks. Living in the city, he himself had little enough reason to carry food about when it was usually readily available for a few coins. Reconsidering the timing of his argument, Avin ducks his head and rumbles his agreement with the larger man.

Toston takes his 3 remaining gnome-sized rations out of his pack and offers them to Ashley, Avin and Wil "I am sorry I do not have fare relative to your size but the remaining meager rations I have you are welcome to."

Toston is dubious of Elthorn's first mention of 'The Nasty One' and tries to figure out if there is something further he isn't sharing with the party (Sense Motive: 9)

He then says, "I am no stranger to night work, though I would rather fight these undead at a time more advantageous to our company, Var and Broom are right. It would be remiss of us to not take the fight to them, especially when more people would be put at risk by our inaction. Also with the good Brother's healing I believe most of us are at full strength or close enough to it. However, none of us have the capacity to heal on our own and we drank the last of the potions, so should we make a side trip to convert the jewelry we found to coinage and the coinage to potions and then seek out the nasty one and his cohorts? Alternatively perhaps Elthorn would like to accompany us on this errand?" (Untrained Diplomacy:16) With the mention of Elthorn, Toston turns his attention to the cleric and makes an imploring gesture.

To Var he says, "Do you think you can follow the trail?"

Talanthrel asks Brother Elthorn if he knows where the "nasty one" lairs. "No I don't," the cleric responds, taking another swallow of wine. "Somewhere nearby, that's all I know."

Var expresses a willingness to search now. Ashley wants to eat first, and Avin agrees.

Broom is concerend that there might be more casualties, a concern that Toston shares. However, Toston is concerned that the group is low on healing, and wonders whether it would be better to take a quick shopping trip first. He asks Brother Elthorn if he will accompany the group. The cleric of Ffloy looks at you, pours another goblet of wine, and sits down. "No," he says firmly.

Roy suggests setting a watch or an ambush, but Brother Elthorn is unable to give you any more specific information about when and where to expect "the nasty one." At night, in Grubbertown, is the best you're going to get.

You share out rations, which you can munch on while contemplating your options. So that's one problem solved. It still leaves you, however, with the fundamental question: hunt down "the nasty one" at your current strength, or take the time to rest and re-supply.

Avin's vote is to take care of the problem tonight. Broom is silent on the matter.

Wilford really needs a drink. This has been a hard day for him, with the veil between the living world and the world of the dead being so close. Brother Elthorn takes a long look at you, then reaches behind the shrine for a small tin cup. He splashes some wine into it and wordlessly hands it across to you.

Var is confident in his ability to track the creature; he and Talanthrel and Roy are for solving ths now.

Toston isn't opposed to the idea, but would like to acquire some healing first. Ashley agrees, and there is a general consensus.

Your first step will be to convert the jewelry you found into gold. You have several options for this. You might still be able to catch Boggs at the Scrum. Failing that, you could just return to the Crescent Moons offices. True, you're not supposed to be seen going in and out of there all the time, but on the other hand it wouldn't be unusual for a group of adventurers to go to a trader to convert loot into cash. Some of you may know of a place you think is reasonably honest. [OOC: anybody whose character has been in Dirt City more than, say, six months can know of a good place to sell the stuff. No roll required; just come up with a reasonable story. :) ]

[Also OOC: We're almost done with this scene, but I'm going to go ahead and award you the XP. Everybody take 200 XP. "I feel strange.......too warm........so warm" Toston says out loud as he lowers his hood and takes off his gloves. He looks down at his hands and sees that little puffs of flame are flickering into and out of existence at his finger tips. When the flames finally cease he notices his normally trimmed nails have grown out into small wicked looking claws, trailing smoke.

The claws are not the only thing about Toston that has changed. His normally orange skin has become slightly scaly, it and his normally violet irises have taken on golden hues and the pupils of his eyes have become vertical reptilian slits. He looks down at his claws in abject horror and asks no one in particular, "What's happening to me?"

The trauma of his abrupt transformation becomes too much for the small gnome and his eyes roll up into his head. Toston passes out, his form goes limp and he drops to the ground.

Brother Elthorn is, big surprise, no help at all. "Is that what that was?" he asks Talanthrel.

That would seem to be all for now. You leave the small chapel and make your way to the house Wilford knows.

The family is just sitting down to dinner when you arrive. You hear a chorus of "who is it, Dad?" from the table, as Wilford's contact steps outside to confer with you. He is impressed by the pieces of jewelry you show him.

After being woken up with the splash of water, Toston's skin, hands and eyes had reverted back to their normal appearance. Toston had been silent on the way to Wil's friends. He had much to ruminate on. (Knowledge[Arcana] 17) Toston knew he was now a sorcerer of a gold dragon bloodline like his great grandmother before him. The stories spoken in the family were true. As he let his mind wander his thoughts turned to the undead with the paralyzing touch. You still have questions about Toston's sudden transformation as you make your way to the humble home of Wilford's contact. Once there, however, you turn your attention to the transaction at hand.

You watch carefully, but as far as you can tell Daniel is offering a fair price for the jewelry.

Those of you keeping watch see nothing suspicious.

[OOC: Potions of Cure Light Wounds are 50 gp. Holy water is 25 gp. First-level scrolls (which are all your mages could cast without having to make a caster-level check) are 25 gp. A wand of Cure Light Wounds is 750 gp, and the rangers could use it without making a check. Potions of Cure Moderate Wounds are 300 gp. Your DM is not advocating any specific course of action; just putting all the prices in one place where you can get at them.]

It is getting late, and a trip to the Catacombs will not be instantaneous. Who is going, and what are they going to buy?

[OOC: Mundane items, like the holy water and the tanglefoot bag, do not have to be purchased through the Catacombs, although I think you can if you want to.]

"I'll go along to the Catacombs with someone else. I'm not very diplomatic, but my being there has saved friends a lot of coin they would otherwise be robbed of by a crooked merchant."

Ashley levels his gaze among his companions, wondering which of his more charming fellows he would be venturing with.

"If we purchase a wand of healing and give it to Var for the battle with the nasty one that still leaves Red free to fight the undead, which I believe are his specialty. Plus Var would not be using the wand every round just when one of us got banged up. That would leave the rest of us 50 gold a piece. Furthermore I would want to venture to the catacombs to get those scrolls I was talking about and upgrade my kama to a cold iron one." Toston says.

Wednesday March 4th, 2015 9:35:31 PM

Avin sits by making mental tallies of the group's needs for future reference. Wands, potions, holy flasks, scrolls... Avin's thoughts are muddled with a sudden anxiety to see the newly sorcerous gnome head out, after all he'd hoped to help the gnome acclimate to his new magic. Though again, sorcery is fundamentally different than wizardry Avin mused to himself. At least Ashley was headed with the little man as well. The wizard nodded more suredly before opening his spellbook to acquaint himself better with its new additions.

Ashley nods to the group's decision, not seeming to have an opinion on the matter. In the end, healing magic was healing magic, and he was growing more confident in his companions' competence and skill to be able to use whatever they decided uppn effectively. The smuggler approaches Toston, gesturing a hand towards the street.

"Let's be on our way, then."

You decide on a wand and some potions, and Toston and Ashley are dispatched to do the purchasing.

The others keep a weather eye out for undead, but your DM would not be so cruel as to spring the final encounter on you before you're geared up. :)

Also, has everyone leveled their character? [Except Roy, who's not second level yet.]

(OOC; ahh I see how it is, single out the level 1 guy in the DM post)

As Roy watches his 2 newfound companions walk away he starts checking his bow and gear making sure it is in tip top shape for the battle to come.

messing with the arrows Roys starts talking without looking up. "Well since we are going to be fighting together I might as well explain a bit about myself esp my hair. When I was younger a group of necromancers attacked my village looking to gather bodies. My parents saved me at the cost of their own lives. The next thing I knew they were being raises as zombies and sent to kill me. I was saved by a wandering ranger. Their blood, my parents blood dyed my hair this color. But I don't look at it as an ill omen, They my ot be here in body but their spirits are always with me, at least thats what I think."

Talanthrel takes a couple of sniffs of the air to see if he can smell the alcohol that Roy must have been drinking to start telling such a personal story. Smelling none, he thinks to himself "Dam! And I thought is was only us Half Elves that were supposed to be emo." Turning to Roy He claps on him the shoulder and says "I sure they would be proud of you. And god's willing we will have destroyed many more undead before the night is thru." Having spoken his piece Talanthrel turns back to standing watch while surreptitiously moving a couple steps away. (Perception 1D20+5=25)

(OOC: Sorry Roy, Talanthrel does not handle sudden displays of emotion well. :) My Character sheet is updated and good to go)

Thursday March 5th, 2015 7:04:29 AM

Toston heads off in the direction of the catacombs with the smuggler/fighter. To Ashley, Toston says " I apologize for my fit earlier, but I am now in control of my new abilities. As a gnome I was born with some minor magical gifts and as a monk I have learned discipline. I also knew a bit about magical theory before I realized my potential, so that helped. I have some new abilities besides the light spell I demonstrated earlier. I can fire a weak orb of acid at a target within 25 feet or a ray of positive energy that will hurt an undead creature that same distance. I can also make someone slightly more perceptive and intimidating or more acrobatic and stealthy or just better able to forage or track and the like. All these things I can do as often as I need to. I also can create a floating shield for myself or damage and potentially weaken slightly a living thing or potentially cause an undead to flee. I also can make those claws come back for a short time and I think because of these", Toston indicates the chains wrapped around his gloved hands, "I can actually grow a tail for an even shorter time I think I am just scratching the surface of my new abilities though and as we continue to adventure things will get more interesting. I also need an additional item from the catacombs that I just remembered so it is a good thing we are going there."

Wil shakes off a seemingly day long daydream about two young sisters singing about Frozen snowmen and realizes that Toston and Ashley are gone. "Aren't we missing a couple adventurers?"
He then checks to make sure he has all his fingers and toes. He realizes that everyone is waiting for something and he sits upon the edge of a small yard. He sets his bag between his knees and contemplates sliding the amulet back around his neck. He then drifts into thought about why this spirit voice is so angry. What makes his so much louder then the rest and how can he make this go away.
OOC:(Sorry about yesterday.. busy day)

Avin's nose wrinkiles as he peers out over his spellbook for the fourth time in as many minutes as if looking up could summon Toston and Ashley back from their expedition sooner. Snorting at the thought he peers across to the diminished task force. Silently, he wondered who may have raised the curious elf following his orphanage or if that had happened late enough in his life to survive on his own.

Ashley Steward [AC: 17, Touch: 10, Flat: 17, HP 22/22]

Ashley listens to Toston as they head off for the Catacombs together. He seems interested in what Toston is saying, for the most part. When Toston finishes speaking, the fighter chuckles.

"I thought monks enjoyed silent reflection? I can hit my foes with weapons and make people uncomfortable."

His tone carries a sarcastic, joking manner to it. Perhaps the group is finally getting to him. He might come out of that grumpy, profeasional shell eventually.

DM Kathy
Thursday March 5th, 2015 10:29:13 PM

You don't have long to wait. In a few minutes, Toston and Ashley return from the Catacombs, carrying their purchases. You quickly distribute the potions and wand among the group, then head out to find the "nasty one."

I need a general sense of your marching order and your strategy, please.

Talanthrel grins and agrees with Var "That's what all the women say."
Seeing Toston and Ashley returning he nods at them. "It looks like their back. Do we have a plan?"

Ashley Steward [AC: 17, Touch: 10, Flat: 17, HP 22/22]
Friday March 6th, 2015 12:10:41 AM

"Kill the undead, and don't die in the process."

Ashley offers up a succinct version of the planning that they have ahead of them with a smirk on his face as he starts handing out the potions and provisions Toston and he had acquired. He makes sure to hand the wand to Var, as they had discussed previously. Once the gear is situated, he offers a more serious line of thought.

"Right now, I'm thinking that if it has a lair, we want to get it out of it. It's no good fighting something on its own terms. If we can get it tracked down, we can flush it out somehow, depending on where it's holed up. If it's in a cave or something, we could try to lure it out of there with fire. Some oil flasks or something thrown in ,and then a torch to start it up."

As he thinks about it, Ashley continues to speak, possible talking more in one go than he has since the rest of the party has met him. The look on his face is one of concentration, and his hands make motions in the air as he speaks, as if he's visualizing what he is talking about in his mind's eye.

"Ideally, we want to fight it in open ground so we can move around and not get bottlenecked. But we don't want to get spread too thin. We almost got that way the last fight, and we suffered for it. Two or three of us should focus on the nasty one, and make sure we're flanking it and controlling where it goes on the field. I can try to keep it where it is by pushing it around with bull rushes and such. The rest of us should concentrate on keeping its minions at bay."

Roy HP:11/11 AC:18 T:14 FF:14
Friday March 6th, 2015 12:42:18 AM

Roy agrees with Ashley for the most part " Between me and Var we shouldn't have a problem tracking down the "nasty one" When we do find him we keep a few melee on him. The rest of us split up casters and range on his minions if he has any and the other melee on the others. I'm very good with my bow but I would feel very bad if a stray arrow hit someone ." (ooc; trying to get across the fact we take a -2 on atk shooting into melee)

OOC: I realize that was an internal monologue, I was just having some fun with Broom's silent demeanor.

Var looks confused by Talanthrel's response at first, and then, realizing it was a joke laughs and claps him on the back.

As Ashley and Toston return, Var takes the wand, giving it a quick inspection, and then tucks it into his belt for easy access. His expression grave as he listens to Ashley and Roy, he adds "If we encounter more skeletons, Broom & Toston should focus on them, since blades & arrows won't be effective - likewise Ashley and Talanthrel should focus on the run-of-the-mill zombies since they're most vulnerable to blades. If we run into those tough, paralyzing zombies, try your best to stay out of their reach, and let the archers & wizards take them down from range. I agree with Ashley that focusing fire in on their leader is going to be necessary for our survival."

Var does a final equipment check, making sure his axes are at the ready and the various belts and pouches are secured, he draws his longbow and nods to the group. "Roy, you and I should lead, try to locate them. Ash, you willing to cover the flank?"

Toston Lotor (Hugh Crosmun) [HP: 14/14; AC 18; Touch 14; FF 14; CMD 16] - CMTC
Friday March 6th, 2015 6:04:59 PM

(OOC: First off I hope everyone is clear that they get a ration and a potion as Ashley said he handed out provisions, Toston bought a ration for everyone. )

Toston plans to be as far front in the marching order as the rest of the group will allow. He started pretty far away from the action last time.

To the group Toston says, " I have 2 spells that are effective against undead. One will do about as much damage as an arrow someone my size could fire from a shortbow, but I have to be 25 feet or less from my target. This damage also will not be stopped by armor. The other spell I have allows me to touch, punch, claw or tail slap an undead and if it proves to be weak willed it will run away for up to half a minute.
A third spell makes myself more difficult to be hit for a minute. I also have my sling if there are skeletons in the distance and my body, nunchaku and kama if a specific type of damage is needed in close quarters. I also have this," Toston takes his placard that reads I am a zombie out of his backpack. "It will make the wearer imperceptible to undead for 10 minutes or sooner if the person wearing the sign touches or interacts with an undead in any way. If we find the lair we could send someone in to scout or create a firetrap or we could give it to Wil and I think he will get a guaranteed sneak attack."

Wilford Grimly (HP:18/18; AC: 14; Touch: 12; Flat: 12; CMD: 14)
Friday March 6th, 2015 7:13:52 PM

Wil smiles at Toston as he pulls the sign from his backpack. "Really? A small wooden sign? About as effective as a sign saying "I will not kill a zombie with my Cold Stone dagger with 5 individual stabs to it's rotten head. While I sit in a bath washing my hair.
As for the firetrap I have enough to make that happen as long as I can get it set up before the mighty one realizes I'm there." Will begins to pull the oil from his bag. He lines them up parallel to each other then begins to insert the wicks. "I will need to have a long wick or something to tie these together or it won't do jack to that beast." Wil, satisfied with the prepped oils puts them all back within his bag.

Avin Fellows HP:16/17 AC:13 Flat:10
Friday March 6th, 2015 8:36:04 PM

Avin considers the magical tincture handed to him with pursed lips. His own brand of magic might never be able to produce such an item, one that could cure (or at least lessen) any wound. His face twists into a grimace as he continues listening in on the conversation. He finds himself shaking his head.

"Not that kind of wizard. No fireballs, no rays of acid. I'm not that kind of wizard." He sighs and lapses into a brief silence, remembering his time with his teacher. He continues, "I spent my valuable spells already. I won't be able to spindle more spells for hours yet. Need a good rest too. Not a twenty minute break. A good rest. I'm just a body in boots for now."

Avin pulls out the dagger from beneath the cloak and studies its edge with grim intent. Satisfied that it has not lost its edge he grabs his lantern and moves forward in the group.

OOC: Unless our DM rules that Avin can have a spell prepared into the free slot he gained upon leveling, his remaining spells will have little application in this particular fight. IF that happens I can also assure you that spell is not magic missile. Although he still has at least one more trick up his sleeve, the wild card that is his amulet.
