Meet the Yngvardians

We're off to see the Pasha, the wonderful Pasha of Oz... (Co-DM JonathanT)
Thursday February 5th, 2015 12:23:48 AM

Restlin slaps Trellus on the back and utters those famous words heard throughout the galaxies, from one world to another, 'Take me to your leader!'
He is ready for some answers!

Kyan suggests that before they depart, one of the flying-capable heroes go give a look-around and spare the Yngvardian scout patrol some needless hours scouting for other Gaelis.

Katinka answers captain Alrik, agreeing that it is a fair plan, but she has some conditions of her own. She wants a letter of safe passage!
At least she offers healing, food, and water to the Yngvardian captain.

Garret slaps himself in the forehead which brings a comment from an Yngvardian, 'Sand Fleas are your permanent companions here. Get used to them or you'll slap yourself silly.'
Little do they know why he did that and he putters around pretending he was looking at the architecture of
the building.

Trellus states, just in time to prevent an awkward moment, that HE is the letter of safe passage, having been a guest of the Pasha for over a year and trusted enough to aid in the scouting duties. To Restlin, he quips 'obviously don't know me very well.'
Pointing in what seems like a random direction, he says, 'It's that way'. He offers the use of an Endure Elements spell if anyone needs help with the heat. His lack of sweat on the brow and shows that it works.

katinka tries to recover from her faux pas by welcoming Trellus to their group.

Beri thanks Sesha for the healing and offers fresh water, suggesting that it is pretty safe to assume it will be hot on the road ahead, however long it turns out to be.

Sesha heals Beri, recovering 11hps. She suggest Trellus save his spell and let her cast it instead as it is easier for her to do so, and renews any Endure Elements already in effect or any new ones who wish it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Katinka's embarasment only grows when she is reminded that Trellus has already been assigned to the group as the Yngvardian liaison. That means he goes wherever they go, or, in this case, they go wherever he goes, unless they want to take the scenic rout to reach the Pasha's camp, a fact confirmed by Captain Alrik, "I suggest you not wander off without him. This desert hides some most gruesome ways to die!" and winks at Trellus.

Garret's observations lead him to conclude that, given time, the harsh desert sand would eventually wear the building down to nothing.

If anyone takes Kyan's suggestion, the IA find that for the moment they are the only ones about in the immediate area. The captain says that he knows about where to look anyway and he's grown tired of sitting idle these past few days and wants to stretch his legs.
"Besides, my men are getting lazy," he jokes.

For those wanting water before they go, there is plenty about now that they have the Gaeli supplies as well and when all is made ready, Trellus starts making tracks in the sand. It appears he is headed deeper into the desert.

The rest of the day goes by rather boringly. The scenery changes little despite the miles. Sometimes they travel on rocky ground and other times they slip-slide up and down a sand dune. At night, if it were not for that handy climate control spell, they'd have to bundle up to fight off the chill of the night.

About noon the next day those with keen eyesight see a strange apparition coming their way. At first it appears to be a flock of birds, but way out here in the desert?

Trellus stops and waits for the apparition to get closer and soon the IA see that what had appeared to be a flock of birds is in actuality a formation of flying horses? These horses have funny shapes (a very long neck and a large hump in the middle of the back) and an awful ugly head. The formation lands and Trellus greets the Yngvardian that dismounts.

"Trellus! Fancy meeting you in these parts. I thought you were with Captain Alrik keeping an eye out on that Gaeli digging party? And who are these people? Not Gaeli, that's for sure!"

We're off to see the Pasha, the wonderful Pasha of Oz... (Co-DM JonathanT)
Thursday February 5th, 2015 12:34:24 AM

DM JT: addendum, adding Bosk's post.

Bosk asks the captain if the knows of any giant settlements around those parts and that 'the' giant spoke of being a king of his people. Bosk is worried that the giants will want to retaliate for their king's long imprisonment.

"Giant? What giant? What are you talking about? There are no giants around here. The mountains to the north would be the only place such people may live but we have no record of any such people. But why do you ask this? You asked about a Fire Giant being buried down there and now you sound like you spoke with one? Captain Alrik asked, puzzled and a bit annoyed.

Sense Motive DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: {He obviously gets the impression the IA are hiding something and Bosk let something slip.}

Sesha [AC 28 /18 Touch/24 Flat] | HP 101/88 | CMD 19][See Invisibility, Cat's Grace, Detect Thoughts]  d100=28 ; d8+6=10 ;
Thursday February 5th, 2015 1:42:21 AM

Traveling with Trellus means that for once, Restlin doesn't have to play leader. This gives Sesha a little time to hang back with her Mage-Priest, picking his mind about bits and pieces of arcane formula. Spellcraft, proper spellcraft, had never been a thing she had worried about.

Witches just cast spells, there wasn't a lot more to it then that!

Since she met Restlin, she had found herself interested in the strange nuances of magic, even if it made her head spin.

That night, Sesha recasts an extended Heroes Feast, presumably in another Mansion of Restlins conjuring. The hardships of life on the road!

You bring forth a great feast, including a magnificent table, chairs, service, and food and drink. The feast takes 1 hour to consume, and the beneficial effects do not set in until this hour is over. Every creature partaking of the feast is cured of all sickness and nausea, receives the benefits of both neutralize poison and remove disease, and gains 1d8 temporary hit points + 1 point per two caster levels (maximum +10) after imbibing the nectar-like beverage that is part of the feast. The ambrosial food grants each creature that partakes a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and Will saves and a +4 morale bonus on saving throws against poison and fear effects for 12 hours. (24 extended)

11 Temporary hp until 8 pmish the following evening.

The following day, she frowns at the camels.

"It looks like a titan chopped a horse in two and then glued it back together unevenly."

Craft check for Weave Elements Spell: 33

Tink breathes a sigh of relief "You see them too? For a minute I thought I was going crazy. Well, crazier. Never heard of flying camels before"

Tink otherwise keeps her mouth shut. Whoever this person is they seem to know Trellus. Probably best to let him handle discussions.

Restlin (Carl) -- AC: +14/+6/+11 CMD: 23 HP: 96/96 (Spells) Luck Points: 9/9  d20+6=24 ; d20+19=39 ; d20+21=24 ;

Knowledge, Nature: 24

Restlin is very happy hanging out in the rear talking shop with Sesha. He seems to be especially on his game today, answering every question she throws his way with exquisite detail (knowledge, arcana: 39). With Restlin's happy-go-lucky attitude, it's easy to forget how smart the boy is.

His air of knowledge drops the moment he sees the flying camels, replaced by his stupid grin.

"Woah, flying camels! That's crazy! Trellus, WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL US YOU HAD FLYING CAMELS. If I had a flying camel, I'd tell everyone. 'Hi, I'm Restlin, I have a flying camel, do you?'"

He pokes Sesha in the ribs with his elbow and points, as if to say "do you believe this? FLYING CAMELS." Otherwise, he lets Trellus approach and make introductions.

Trellus (AC27/15t/25f, HP 128/128, CMD 22, SR25)
Thursday February 5th, 2015 8:54:47 PM

"What? Just give away all my secrets on the first date?" Trellus shoots back at Restlin. "I'm not that kind of guy."

The blond man raises a hand, welcoming the speaker.
"Many Shadows, Tarin. Watching the digging party got boring after they attacked these dudes, got their reeds cut, and just lied around bleeding."

Trellus introduces each of the IAs to Tarin.

"They're from the same area as me," he finishes. Captain Alrik asked me to show them the way to the Pasha."
With a twinkling glance at Restlin, he adds "I don't suppose you've got enough room to give us a lift?"

Bosk AC: 33/16/29 CMD:28 103 of 103 Spells  d20+5=9 ;
Thursday February 5th, 2015 8:59:20 PM

Bosk, surprised by the man's reaction, shakes his head. Sorry...it was only a question. It is a bit of a long story. There are many traps down there...and to be honest, it was actually an illusion I saw. It gave us a strange message, but if there are no giants, then it was probably another trick like the illusion. We will tell everything to the sages. They will know more about it than we do.

When Trellus arrives Bosk has to agree with Restlin. Those are magnificent creatures. Would you be willing to sell one or two? He assures the man that he wants them for pets, not pack animals, and that they would be well cared for. He also asks the man where he can get a drink. We do a lot of travelling, and I make it a point to buy a couple bottles of anything made locally. My father was a vintner, and he taught me that there is no better way to remember a trip than sipping a local beer or wine. Something about the taste and smell jogs the memory.

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:38/34/32 HP:125/112 Ki:12/13 CMD: 33]

Garret walks right up to the camels and openly stares at them. He knows nothing of camels, so he reaches out to touch it and explores where the wings attach, not saying a word.

We're off to see the Pasha, the wonderful Pasha of Oz... (Co-DM JonathanT)
Friday February 6th, 2015 1:43:56 AM

DM JT OOC: I must say Mike Knox sure can take things in stride. I figured he'd add lib through this part, but I completely forgot to mention the Flying Camel patrol leader's name ahead of time for him. Good job
in rolling with it. LOL

As Trellus leads the way, Sesha spends some valuable 'class' time with Restlin, discussing the mechanics of spell casting, so she claims. She does, however, magically produce another big banquet when they stop for the night. One begins to wonder how the IA ever became hardened adventurers, with all this pampering!

Her reaction to a camel is typical to most who never had to depend their life upon them.

Katinka does a double-take when she sees the flying camels. Good thing the others confirm her own eyesight. She remains quiet for a change and lets Trellus do the talking.

Restlin is more than happy to suffer through Wizardry 101 with Sesha and gushes forth with vast amounts of wizardry knowledge. But was Sesha really paying attention?

The Flying Camel patrol, though, comes in the nick of time to save the others from Restlin's Wiardry 201 course, as they distract the wizard. He genuinely seems to wish he had one. Trellus could launch into the 'Why Flying camels are not all that popular 101' course as payback for suffering through Wizardry 101
but spares the others that further torture.

Kyan eyeballs one that reminds him of Zeoll. Oh, where is Anrete when you really need one who knows how to appreciate the ugly things in life!

Trellus greets the Flying Camel Patrol captain (who will now go by the name of Tarin) and explains why he isn't with Captain Alrik. A little mishap with the IA party rendered that task rather complete. He goes on to introduce the IA to Captain Tarin and their goal to reach the Pasha's camp, and by the way, would they have room for a lift?

Garret approaches one of the winged camels. The rider eyes him wearily and puts a tighter hold onto the reins. Camels are a bit taller than a horse and Garret can easily walk underneath a camels belly. His ignorance of the camel's temperament puts him in peril of getting a good solid kick in the kiester but the rider manages to get the camel to kneel and settle down into the sand on its knees before such unfortunate event takes place.

DM JT Backtracking a bit:
Bosk stammers a bit when he realizes his blunder and tries to bluff his way out of it. At least part of his explanation is true. However, if Captain Alrik had been a Justicar like Katinka, he'd have failed miserably.

Captain Alrik accepts the answer, or does he? What would Trellus say if put under pressure?
The IA lucked out on that one!

DM JT back to the present:
Bosk marvels at the flying camels and goes on to ask if they have any to sell. He tries a bit of trade talk about local beverages and memories.

------------------------------------------------------------

Captain Tarin greets the IA members in turn and seems amused at their reaction to the flying camels. He disappoints the minotaur when he informs him that none are for sale. Any such special request can be made to the Pasha directly but don't get your hopes up.

Trellus explains in further detail how the Gaelis attacked the IA members and brought about their own demise and that Captain Alrik was going to scout around for any other Gaelis while he himself escorted the IA to meet the Pasha.

"Pasha Gaulikson would be very pleased to meet the Iron Adventurers," Tarin assures the group.
"I will give you a word of caution, though. The reason we are out here is because there was a report that a patrol was attacked sometime yesterday. Since we have been avoiding any contact with the Gaelis and they in turn seem to ignore us, Pasha Gaulikson wanted to get to the bottom of this quickly. So be careful. Whatever happened, the cause is still out there."

With that he gives his farewells and the flying camel patrol takes to the air again in search of the cause of the mysterious attack on a patrol.

When all is ready to continue towards the Pasha's camp, Trellus takes the lead again, although a bit more weary of surprises.

The day passes and night comes again. Watches are set and dawn breaks over the vast empty desert. Trellus calculates another two days to the Pasha's camp.
"It is an oasis. Yep, there are several oasis in this desert. The Pasha rotates between them. So you'll get to see some green for a change."

However they barely get a couple miles from their night's campsite when they spot a column of smoke rise over a distant sand dune.

Friday February 6th, 2015 9:01:12 AM

Restlin doesn't know this area well enough to be really concerned, but something hits the pit of his stomach. "Trellus, does that like like a campfire to you?"

Trellus (AC27/13t/25f, HP 139/128, CMD 22)
Friday February 6th, 2015 9:18:51 PM

Trellus looks at the column of smoke grimly.

He shakes his head at Restlin's query.
"This is sunbaked," he states flatly.

"We might wanna have a sneaky type check out ahead. I'm not very good at staying hidden..or quiet."

Where There's Smoke... (co-DM SteveK)
Sunday February 8th, 2015 8:09:14 PM

Restlin wonders if smoke is normal, and Trellus quickly confirms it is not. The Yngvardians are all conscious of keeping small fires, and so the tall column must be something else, and most likely, something bad.

A scouting expedition is quickly suggested and Katinka jumps at the chance to have a little scouting fun. She makes some suggestions, and is off!

Restlin encourages the others to keep up with himself, counting on his ability to see Invisible to keep track of the little, flying Halfling. However hile the Wizard can see invisible, he still has to try and see the stealthy Tink (Perception DC = 43 stealth, misdirection, 200 feet [+1 every 10 feet])

Bosk and Sesha hasn't chimed in yet, but Garrett seems to want to stay here until Katinka gets back.

..............

As it is, Katinka is invisible and flying away. It is going to take some quick coordination to have anyone be able to see her at 200 feet away for the group to follow. Other options are to stay here and wait for the report or at least get closer to the column of smoke...

That Tink is a sneaky one, he'll give her that. Realizing keeping tabs on her will be tough, he calls upon Wardd to help him out (luck domain: bit o' luck, roll 20s twice).

Sesha is concerned.

Tink is easily beyond invisible to her, Sesha couldn't find the sneaky Halfling with the best of tries. The last time she lost track of an ally, she spent sixty excruciating seconds forcing healing magic into Restlin as fast as she could, watching him rag doll between death and consciousness.

She is not a fan of anyone "scouting ahead", and lets Tink know it through the link.

"You be careful Tink. If something happens to you and I can't get to you in time, I'll bind your spirit into pot-pot and carry you on my broom for a good week until you learn your lesson. "

Venting out suitable plans for revenge, Sesha feels a little better.

Lucky Restlin is amazingly able to keep sight of Tink , and the Iron Adventurers (and Trellus) follow in the morning across the sands.

Bosk is glad he and the others were able get all their spells back and that it is morning.

Katinka leads the others across the sands and after an hour gets to the last rocky dune from the smoke. Katinka is able to watch, listen, and bring back the following news to the group:

Over the rise 400 feet away, a large red humanoid is auguring and casting a spell causing sparks and smoke that burns three tied up humans. The humans are in the tattered and burnt garb of the Yngvardins. Surrounding the torture scene, two destroyed wagons, and the slain forms of four horses and five more humans are in the area. Looking about, there seems to be no covered way to get less than 400 feet without being in danger of discovery.

"I don't think we have enough magic to make all of us invisible, unless Sesha has some tricks up her sleeve. I can stay invisible for a while though.

"Anyway, we're not stopping for anything. Tink's dropped her invisibility, which means she's probably trying to be heroic up there. Putting one's self in harms way so someone better suited to it doesn't have to is MY SHTICK, LADY." He calls out the last bit loud enough for Tink to hear. "I won't have her stealing my signature moves."

Katinka is 200 feet from the Iron Adventurers and 400 feet from the red humanoid. she feels the tortured humans have had enough and need a distraction, so she drops her invisibility, shouts to her friends and becomes a distraction... hopefully.

Restlin disapproves of the Halfling stealing his moves! He casts Expedious Retreat and flies to close the distance by 90 feet.

Garrett has an even faster way to get there, by his lighting fast feet! Running (x4 move), the Halfling covers 240 feet in six seconds and is beneath Katinka!

Led by Kyan and Trellus, the others jog along (assuming jog means hustling and at x2 speed) steadily closing the distance.

......................

The red humanoid looks up and then laughs. "Little People so eager! I shall be with you in a minute, but let me give these pathetic beings a present first!" The large being turns and casts a spell, and the prisoners metal bonds begin to glow!

Even flying at top speed, Tink cannot fly as fast as Garret can run. The best chance they have of getting to their destination quickly lies with him.

"We've got to get in there!" Tink flies forwards, descending to 10ft. She ensures she is no more than 25ft ahead of Garret and then casts a quick Haste spell affecting both halflings.

Everyone to me, I can get us there instantly. Bosk calls everyone to him. His hands become a blur and it looks like he is pulling back a layer of time and space to create an ethereal doorway (dimension door) that comes out just outside the creature's reach (sorry, I don't know from your post if it has a 5, 10 or more ft reach). The action of bending the dimensions wears the blond taur out, and he takes a moment to catch his breath. (The caster can not take another action after casting this spell).

Hearing Bosk, Restlin realizes there's a faster way to do this. Looking to where Tink is, he uses a new trick he learned recently to conjure himself next to her.

"Seriously lady," he starts as he pops into existence next to her. "Leave the ill-advised heroics to me." He gets a good look at whatever's causing all this, hoping it's not the fire giant they just let out. Of course, who knows if that was actually a fire giant? Fire giants weren't known for flying around.

Ooc. Well, that was easy!

Restlin, Katinka, and Garrett are too far away from Bosk to do the Dim Door route, and continent to run and fly across the sand. Katinka casts her spell and flies 90 feet closer, being still 250 feet away. Restlin zips 180 feet closer, but started further away. Garrett, well Garrett with his speed and Tink's spell runs 360 feet in six seconds! The little halfling is only 40 feet away from the Large Red Humanoid!

Of course, Bosk's spell brings Kyan, Trellus, Beri, and Sesha even closer, a mere 20 feet away (providing a comfortable buffer from a possible AOO)

Beri turns into an air elemtal and rises into the air.

Trellus has a more direct approach, his spell freezes the red humanoid! ( know planes; DC15. Highlight to display spoiler: { it is an effreet! } )

Despite the immobile red man , the spell continues to burn the prisoners. Only two are screaming now!

Sesha is concerned that three of the five are no longer screaming. Part of her pact with Serenbeth was that she would deny no creature who asked for healing, and even though this group hadn't asked, she assumed it was needed.

Sesha casts a quickened spell, Deathwatch, and checks the vitals of the prisoners. She saw from the corner of her eye Trellus pumping the Efreet full of magic, and Kyan sinking arrows into the foe. While she wasn't very good at killing, she was excellent at making sure things didn't die.

Trellus seems to work with the Iron Adventurers like a well-oiled set of gears. A harm spell also blasts through the Efreet's will, and two arrows from Kyan ends the threat and the efreet.

Sesha deals with the "heat metal" spell, and Beri ensures any stray ember with a deluge of water.

Bosk moves over, and not noticing any martial weapons or medium or heavy armor, tries for a surge of healing. The Minotaur doesn't have to worry about the efreet, because it is dead, dead, dead. The channelling seems to revive the robed prisoners. They are better, if not completely healed.

With no combat to worry about, Restlin, Garrett, and Katinka gets to the site of the slaughter (OK fine, both slaughters) in time to be able to help clear the bodies and support the prisoners.

It looks like the ball is in the Iron Adventurer's court ...

Trellus can see that the survivors are not from the old Sargrass but are Yngvardins. The five survivors all agree that they were ambused by the invisible genie who then looked like a fire giant and announced that Abdul Abdul Mahmaluk ruled the deserts. Then it killed and destroyed everything before settling down for what Abdul called 'a little fun'.

The group was on their way to join the Pasha's encampment.

As the Iron Adventurers worry about what could be the implications, the sharp-eyed of the team can see the arrival of Tarim and the Flying Camel Cavalry.

It doesn't take a sleuth to determine what has happened, and Tarim himself is impressed. "I have heard of the strength of your gods,Trellus, but to have slain an evil fire djinn? Truely, you and these strangers from your land are powerful allies!"

After speaking with the survivors of the caravan, Tarin feels certain that it is more important to bring the Iron Adventurers get to the Pasha quickly than to continue his patrol. "I own I was wrong and to get you to the Pasha I will fly you on our camels. Will you agree?"

With a Reduce Person spell for Bosk from Sesha and ensuring an occasional renewal during flight, the Iron Adventurers have a new adventure! There are some like Restlin who are wildly enthusiastic, some like Kyan and Garrett are strictly workmanlike, and some like Bosk are a little dubious. Trellus, Beri, Restlin, and Sesha all seem to watch Bosk and a camel with an air of humor.

The adventurers all find that Tarin knows what he is talking about. The long distance patrol has a remuda of spare fling camels, several of them with saddle and tack for quick remounts. The Iron Adventurers and Trellus are able to safely scramble up a camel each, and some of Tarin's patrol ensure the straps are set properly for this exotic riding. The camels smell funny, slightly rancid, and one or two glare balefully at the inexperience of their new riders. With a couple voiced "bee-UNK"s and a spit or two, the entire force is soon airborne!

Flying quickly but low over the desert sands and rocks, the hot wind whips the faces of the patrol, the caravan survivors, and our heroes. Strong wings pump camel and rider to nearly 100 feet high before swooping into a shallow glide with long feathered wings extended. With the heat rising off the steadily heating desert, these glides can go on for miles before the cycle is renewed with labored wing beats. Rolling low ridges, sometimes of bare rock and sometimes sand flash below, and always the unceasing heat, and wind, and grit getting into everything no matter how protected. Yet for some, the thrill of the flying camels could far outweigh these minor inconveniences.

Fly and rest, fly and rest. The cycle continues until the sun is but an orange stain on the horizon. Rounding a ridge marked by a pillar of rock, the entire group of flying camels comes into a final glide towards an oasis of green trees and pool of water. On the edge of the greenness, dozens of large but low ceinged tents stretch, herds of camel, sheep, and goats are penned or hobbled nearby with lookouts and shepherds keeping watch. All of the people seem similarly dressed to Tarin and the Yngvardins that the heroes have met.

She takes a moment however, to unwrap the veil from her face. She had been wearing it for some time, and she did not want to disturb the Pasha if he for some reason demanded she drop it. For a brief moment, the horrible gap where her nose should have been is exposed, giving way to puckered scars and a gaping hole.

Pasha Sigleif Gaulikson's camp ... DM SteveK
Wednesday February 18th, 2015 4:17:14 PM

The flying camel ride is an experience for many, probably more so to Bosk than most. After all, the Minotaur doesn't anywhere much!

The heroes clean up with some handy Prestidigitations while Tarin tries to answer a few questions. "There are other oases and we are very careful about them all, for they are often the difference between life and death. That is one reason we move around a lot; not even a small family could live here all year around and not eat the oasis clean."

"Our leader's title is Pasha. His name is Sigleif Gaulikson and won the leadership by right of passage over his siblings. "
............,.........

Tarin leads the magically cleaned heroes through the nomadic camp to the Pasha's tent. It is huge, a sprawling canopy of khaki cloth covering at least 100 feet diameter and displaying a multitude of geometric designs ranging in color from pale yellow to rust to black. The sides of the tent are low, only about three feet high, with a gentle slope up to ten feet. DC Know Local Highlight to display spoiler: { the design is to shed the wind }. The main opening is tall if narrow, and large enough for a medium humanoid to squeeze through, forcing Bosk to really squeeze in order to get in.

Once inside, the Iron Adventures notice the tent is divided by hanging rugs into rooms. This first room is almost a 1/3 of the entire tent, a foyer that takes care of nearly every general need. There are robed women around a small cook fire in one area, people resting in another, and guards standing on the inside of the doorway to the Pasha. A breeze comes through the tent, and the interior is much cooler than the outside. Arcane Sight/Detect Magic with DC Spellcraft 11 Highlight to display spoiler: { the faint abjuration of is all through the interior }. Plenty of everburning torches keep the interior lit.

Tarin escorts the Iron Adventurers and Trellus immediately through the guarded opening in the interior wall, and the IA see what the cleric of Domi has seen before. Silk hangings of paradisiacal scenes in bright colors hang in the Pasha's audience room. Many Yngvardians are on cushions about the semi-circular area, with the largest cushions on the far side, occupied by a richly-dressed middle-aged man, obviously a warrior in his own right. It doesn't take Tarin or Trellus' whispers to tell the others who is Pasha Sigleif Gaulikson.

Near the Pasha are three more people in slightly less rich finery. The first is an attractive middle-aged woman who is softly playing a lute. The second is a kind-looking old man whose clothing shows several divine symbols. DC 20 Know Religion Highlight to display spoiler: { They are symbols of the Power Sargrass }. The third is a middle-aged man who constantly has several large scrolls nearby. There are several women and also empty cushions near the Pasha.

Tarin moves to the center space and bows deeply. At a beckoning gesture from the Pasha, Tarin takes a seat at an empty cushion at the Pasha's feet and speaks quickly and softly. At the Pasha's nod, Tarin then beckons the Iron Adventurers forward to where he had bowed. All this is no surprise to Trellus, but then there seems to be a breech in normal protocol. As Tarin begins to introduce the Iron Adventurers, the Pasha holds up his hand. In a soft but strong baritone, the Pasha speaks: "No. Let the strangers introduce themselves."

The tent is silent in expectation. All eyes watch the eight heroes.

The watching audience seems quite taken with Sesha's words, Katinka's support and magical demonstration, and quite a few are startled into smiles by Garrett. Through it all, it appears that the Pasha sees through all the folderol, and is quite pleased by what he sees. And has heard from Tarin.

"You are all invited to a feast in celebration of the victory over the efreet, Abdul Abdul Malamuk. Our Yngvadians history says the monster was the second in command to the barbarian king our foe!"

As if by magic, food and drink appear, music and dancing begin, and the heroes are invited to the empty cushions by the Pasha.

As platters of thin sliced goat meat crackling in a coriander sauce is passed with flay breads and pungent cheeses, the Pasha introduces his guests to his advisors. There is the woman Ajasta the Bard, Roald the high priest in his symbols is Sargrass, and H'aarvard the Sage surrounded by his scrolls. It is also an opportunity to speak with the Pasha and his advisors about anything the heroes may want to learn...

While the feast is going on, an argument between two women starts a belly-dancing contest, where one and then another of the women show their talents on the left of the Pasha. At the same time on the right hand side, men begin to take to their fee and show their own dancing, mostly consisting of graceful jumps and leaps and twirling in a circle.

As drinks and food are passed, she unhooks pot-pot from his place on her belt loop and pours in a bit of wine and water, then licks her finger and casts a prestidigitation spell, turning her drink both pink and fizzy, and very sweet and to her liking.

Giggling as the bubbles tickle her nose, she sips her drink and settles in next to Restlin.

One tiny-sized cauldron later, Sesha is elbowing her Mage-priest in the arm.

"This is the first time I've been free of my disfigurements in a long time. Here we go!"

She takes off her upper leatherskin dress, then begins undoing the clips on the mithral chain shirt she wears underneath. Just before things get indecent, she calls on her drow-given magic to call a globe of darkness over her.

When she steps out, wearing only her leather skirts and top, she throws her chain shirt at Restlin to hold.

Bosk bows deep. My name is Bosk Deox, sone of Cenoios and Adatia, It is a pleasure to meet you. When Katinka explains the Iron Adventurer's role in the creature's release he sets the 5' tall lead amphorae before the man. The creature was trapped in this urn. I brought it with us, just in case we needed to use it to somehow trap it again.

Trellus has seen the dancing before. He has also tried the dancing before, and was afterwards advised (very politely) that it would best for all if did he not attempt to do so again.

So, it is with some trepidation that he watches Sesha step into the fray. The blond man quickly relaxes, as she's actually pretty good.

And, then tenses right up again when Katinka picks this time and place to confess the group's sins.

"We didn't just up and let release the Efreet Lord," he interjects smoothly. "We came upon that vase, and not knowing what it was, broke the seal...which in hindsight was a sunbaked pick. The efreet tricked us into thinking we were dealing with a fire giant prince, and made no move to attack us. At that point we were faced with a choice of letting him proceed or killing him unprovoked, and with no other knowledge, we let him proceed."

The blond man sighs. "A poor choice, but not ill meant."

Garret grabs some food as soon as it appears. Then, when the dancing starts, he quickly joins in with the men, showing some acrobatics moves they haven't seen before (acrobatics: 39). He alternates dancing with food until he sees Tink head over to confess. He stops dancing and stands there, shirtless, panting as he awaits the Pasha's response.

Ajasta the bard takes her lute out on response to Beriothian's question. "The proper response is through the Song of the Paladin. ". Trellus' ears might perk up, for the visitor from the Sargrass has not heard THIS story before!

"In the yellow Unknown past, there was a large open plain bordered by mountains and a large river. This great plains was inhabited by migrating tribes, the Yngvardians, many centuries ago, but then a warring band of barbarians, the Gaeli, led by their king Grendel the Cruel, invaded from the mountains and subjugated the tribes. After his victory, Grendel built a capital for his new kingdom, a city inside a huge pyramid where Grendel the Cruel ruled with an iron fist. Enslaved and used for Human sacrifice, the plains tribes suffered greatly.

In their time of need the Yngvardians called out for salvation, and the Power Sargrass took a son of a chieftain to the mountains where he was taught and grew into a dedicated Force for good. Guided by Sargrass, Gaulik the Paladin emerged from the mountains, clad in gleaming Steelgrass armor and weapons, and rallied his people to victory, defeating Grendel the Cruel and his army in front of the pyramid. Gaulik was elected ruler over a united Yngvaridan people, the first Pasha.

The Gaeli, however, entombed their king along with his royal regalia and trusted servants that fell with him that fatal day. They sealed the city, hiding the entrances, and setting many traps and mazes to forever keep what was inside away from human hands.
What the Yngvardians did not know was the depth of evil of Grendel the Cruel. On the day of his death, the plains began to die, and turned into a vast sandy desert. Rumor has it that to break the curse one must enter the pyramid, find the tomb of Grendel the Cruel and destroy his remains along with his royal items."

Sesha moves with the other ladies with just about the same amount of clothing. The witch picks up some moves quickly, and holds her own, doing better than several of the ladies and earning appreciative applause from all sides of the gigantic tent. One of the arguing ladies is mildly better, but it is a young bronze beauty who wins the overall contest. "My youngest daughter", the Pasha beams with obvious pride.

Garrett doesn't try to emulate the men's dance, but does his own thing. This makes the little warrior much more popular than even trying to fit in. Even though he doesn't have a chance at winning the dancing contest, the men appreciate the tumbling display by the halfling, and raise a cheer to his final superb twist and twirling leap!

The Pasha listens carefully to Katinka, as well as the addendums of the suddenly silver tounged Trellus and stoic Bosk. With advisors and family in various states of shock and anger, the Pasha sits as if made of stone. Listening and pausing for a time, he finally looks up. "A warrior acts, and if he finds he is wrong, he acts again to correct it. You have slain an enemy and corrects the mistake of unknowingly setting him free. I find no blood price for you guests of my tent."

"But tell us why you are here in our lands. For my advisors have much knowledge of generations past. In this land, the future is ever linked to the past."

Her mood sobered by Tinker's admission, Sesha considers the fun well over, and sits down near Restlin. She takes a deep breath, ready to defend their position, but is pleased to find out that she doesn't have to.

She doesn't bother to re-don her armor. She isn't threatened by the Pasha and doesn't wish to imply that she is.

The Pasha certainly embodied the spirit of the warriors of her blood-kin, a barbarian tribe who revered Ga'al in ignorance. Warriors fought and died. Warriors acted and corrected themselves if they acted unfavorably. A good chief knew this, as the Pasha did.

"Your words are pleasing Pasha. The advisers and nobles in your tent would do well to observe your mannerisms, and yours sons and daughters if any. It is a difference between a good chief and great chief when they understand when to accept that which is and when to rage for that which they did or did not want. Thank you for hospitality again."

Revealing a Medallion... DM SteveK
Monday February 23rd, 2015 6:48:05 PM

The Pasha inclines his head with a smile, the approval of Sesha amuses the warrior-leader!

The advisors listen carefully to Bosk, Restlim, and Katinka, but it is obvious the foreign words mean nothing to them. Pasha Sigleif Gaulikson pulls out a medallion and shows the heroes, it is easy to see the Teucri runes that cover the medallion!

"This medallion is the symbol of the unified tribal clans after the war of liberation from the Gaeli. None know this word, "Teucri". Only that soon after the Gaeli sealed their Puramid City, these symbols appeared on some walls that led into the city."

Ajasta the Bard explains that it is the belief of the Yngvaridans that the symbols are linked to the imprisonment of Grendel the Cruel's spirit inside his city and tomb. "Legend says that if one destroys Grendel the Cruel's royal accoutrements and remains in the Pyramid City, the curse he placed on the land will be lifted. Countless warriors in the past tried, but none that got in ever came out.

H'aarvard says the Gaelis are trying to get in too, but not to remove the curse, but to retrieve Grendel the Cruel's royal accoutrements and re-establish their empire! This makes the others in the tent laugh and exclaim that the Gaeli will perish like all the others, but the Pasha only smiles. Garret brings up a good point. There may not be any tales of the Tecuri, but that could just be our name for them. Are there any tales of a city with a floating bridge? Suspended by floating hooks in they sky? Or of a sentient machine that creates small objects called chits, that were used for spells and for currency? Or even just a group of people who were fond of using man catchers as a weapon?

Tink can sense the displeasure she has caused by bringing up the topic of the release of the efreet. In her mind though, it had to be done. Starting off a new friendship means establishing trust. What if it was later discovered that the group let the efreet out? And perhaps more importantly, if there were any legal implications of having done so then she needs to be held accountable. Otherwise, how could she judge others?

She leans in closer to look at the medallion the Pasha shows, but dare not touch it. He's excused their acts once already and she doesn't want to lose a hand for touching some potentially sacred object.

Garret's question is the one that lingers in Tink's mind. Where is Socraterius now? "We could try some sort of divination to try and locate him?" she suggests "My justicar abilities allow me to try and track him, however, using these abilities would allow him to detect me"

She then adds to Beri's points "And don't forget, the Teucri were an all male race. Of course, that could also explain why we can't find them. They simply got lost and wouldn't stop and ask directions" she smiles at her joke.

Can I assume Bosk showed the rest of the party the memory stone he found in the well? If so...

"So," Restlin says aloud, mostly to himself. "We have Socraterius who says the Teucri cursed Hook City, and these fine folks who say there's a being named Grendel the Cruel, whom killing will release a curse on these lands. Related? Maybe they are. Maybe killing this guy would release the curse Socraterius says the Teucri put on our city. Of course, we rather like the effects of that curse. It would be really, really bad if those hooks just failed. Lots of life lost there.

"Maybe Hook City is someplace Grendel the Cruel is supposed to return to. Maybe Socraterius was trying to warn us that the artifacts needed to be destroyed before he returned and used them for their original purpose.

"Hooks floating in the air don't HAVE to be used as a bridge anchor. Maybe they're weapons of some kind. That chit machine sure was able to tear through several able-bodied men and women before Tink got clever with it." He looks at that memory stone. "Not sure how those could be weaponized, but there's lots we don't understand."

Restlin stands and stretches his legs. "At least, that's my wild-eyed theory. There are a lot of parallels between the Teucri and Gaeli. We should check out this temple. Sounds right up our alley, really...what, being adventurers and all."

End of the Party.. DM SteveK
Tuesday February 24th, 2015 9:11:14 PM

Garrett wonders where is Socratarius and Kyan quips about being a dried up husk somewhere.

Trellus is getting more information than he has heard before. The cleric from Rattledam learned that The monks had been keeping secret a huge pool of Woldsblood under the city, and that a chysis of the infant Power Sargrass floated therein, and was born only a short time before all of the Sargrass Plains were destroyed. This SHOULD mean that Sargrass couldn't possibly have been in this desert land thousands of years ago... But he was. Curiouser and curiouser.

Beri asks about other tales that the Yngvardians know about other fantastic things, but the nomadic people have no tales other than their desert area. So too, they don't know of something like the Memory Stone that Katinka shows.

Neither Katinka or Restlin can decipher the inscriptions. It is possible, the halfling thinks, that it may not even be a language, just decorations.

As for Divination, Roald the High Priest admits he has been casting divinations every night about the Gaelis and the pyramid. He agrees to include asking for the name Socratius.

Bosk wants to know about tactics and the weapons and powers of the dead Grendel from thousand years ago. The nomads in the tent think it is a strange question, for he would fight with scimitar and bow just like everyone else! Ha'arvard understands better that these things can change, but it would take much study through many scrolls to try to find an answer. Perhaps the Minotaur will stay with the sage for a month or two and seek the knowledge together?

H'aarvard does have an ancient scroll that is well known and describes a warrior prince, Faerlung Gaulikson, getting into the Pyramid City. The writer waited for a month in vain for the great prince's return. Ajatsa the bard adds that from time to time a hero will study the scroll and try his luck at destroying the curse, but all who have gotten inside, none have returned. Pasha Sigleif Gaulikson will say, half way in jest, that if the PCs will to try and do succeed, immense wealth will be their reward, including one of the Sigleif's own daughter's hand in marriage, making the lucky one an Yngvardian Prince!

And the feast continues into the night and slowly winds down. The Pasha invites the heroes to stay for a day or two and recover, perhaps visit the bazaar for trading of mementos of this land to remember when they are back in their great city.

Tink is just as confused as Sesha. "I think the desert heat is playing tricks with Restlin's memory. It was Sesha whose diplomatic words stopped a battle before it had even begun"

"As for the divinations, it is possible that Socraterius uses the exact same means that I do: a misdirection spell. Rather than look for him directly, we could try divinations - such as Locate Object - to try and find a nearby memory stone? We know we have one, and the Yngvardians don't seem to have such objects. If we do locate the presence or direction of another, it would likely be Socraterius. By all accounts he would need one to return to Hook City. Although, it is possible he made this a one way trip"

Restlin, Katinka and Sesha have a bantering circle that teases the young wizard's memory. It is a good way to end the night.

Garrett is more interested in learning who are the children of the Pasha, especially the daughters! It turns out there are nine of them and six sons; the Pasha certainly does keep things lively!

Bosk doggedly keeps at his questions, nearly begging for specifics about the dead and buried Grendel the Cruel. There aren't any. It has been thousands of years ago and only tales of tales are still about. There are no extant descriptions of Grendel or his weapons exist. He can't be told what no one knows.

At night, the Iron Adventurers (and Trellus) are given the guesting tent for the night. Morning dawns with streaks of pink and orange over a blue, blue sky. For all the harshness of this desert, it has awesome sunrises! Breakfast is brought in by serving girls; cold sliced goat in garlic sauce, a nutty paste of chick pea and more garlic, a cream with chopped vegetables and more garlic, and a pungent crumbly cheese. Along with the platters are a goodly pile of flat breads and decanter after decanter of cool water with citrus slices.

Ahead of the day, there are the people, the animals, the bazaar, the bard, the sage, and the high priest. What would each hero like to do?

Another Day Passes... DM SteveK
Thursday February 26th, 2015 9:39:20 PM

Trellus visits the expatriots of Oddholme, and the excitement of strangera from Hook City brings hope. A few of the refugees had once been sailors on druidwood boats and had visited the magical city before the Great Migration. Perhaps...

Bosk and Beri concentrate on the loss of the Memory Stone!

Kyan relaxes.

Katinka learns about the nomadic people, the Yngvardians. They seem in general reserved and hardworking, but capable of great enthusiasm when emotions rise. They are fair minded and fond of bargaining, and the halfling learns the team can find nearly any type of non-magical or special material in the bazaar. In fact, it may be a good time to restock...

Restlin asks about the Gaeli and Grendel the Cruel, but gets even less information from the common people than the Pasha's learned advisors. Basically, Gaeli are a name they call goblins and Grendel the Cruel is a boogie man that mothers scare thier children.

Bosk considers where the Memory Stone could be... But he doesn't remember.

Kyan contemplates himself.

Katinka is mildly surprised that it appears the one thing the bazaar doesn't have is a map of any kind! (Later speaking with Trellus can confirm that maps for sale was unheard of in the Sargrass Plains that was. And Bosk, Restlin, and Beri can all confirm the same is true in Gateway Downs. And the only maps for sale in Hook City is of the city itself or the Northern Continent. Could it be that the entire Southern Continent has some prohibition against maps??!!)

Restlin looks for the Sages, but there are none in the Pasha's camp. The closest to that learned body is the close advisors to the Pasha himself. So the young Mage wonders which one he will visit; Ajasta the bard? Roald the priest? Or Ha'arvard the scribe?

Garrett looks for the children to play games, but these are not city children. Even the ones as young as four have important jobs to do; looking after the sheep and goats or youngsters, drawing water, gathering fallen dates and figs, or helping the adults in any number of tasks. Games are for night after lessons or reserved for holy days. The land is too harsh to waste effort on games during the day.

Actions In the Night! DM SteveK
Saturday February 28th, 2015 11:00:20 AM

The heroes can resupply from the bazaar during the day before a simple meal and sleep. The bazaar has just about anything from weapons and armor to spices to kitchenware. There is a tent with spell components as well as a few low level magic items. A large tent near the bazaar is the mobile temple to Sargrass. Despite their worship of Sargrass, there are no Glassteel items available. Healing potions and other low key clerical potions can be obtained at the tent temple.

There are many puzzles the heroes still have on their minds. One thing is clear; the trail of Teucri artifacts is pointing to the Pyramid City of the Gaeli. Another is apparent when the heroes consider it; the peace loving and advanced Teucri who are from somewhere in Jericho Space couldn't possibly be the same people as the warlike and barbarian Gaeli from the mountains of this land.

Of Socratarius, there is no sign.

In the middle of the night, a commotion is about the Pasha's tent!

He was able to pick out of my mind how I wanted the Yngvardians to be like with not a whole lot to go on.

DM JT IC:

Katinka steps outside herslef, er, also steps outside to catch more of the commotion that's going on. What she hears gives her some concern. "We should go to the Pasha's tent. He's assembled his council, and from what I can hear, their divinations may also have just revealed something" She also cautions that she doesn't know if the commotion is related to them or not.

Beri thanks Tink for the info, noticing that his attunement to Nature is making it more difficult to attune to the humanoid social queues.

Restlin's caution goes in a different direction, that of not assuming they should try and do anything to assist the Yngvardians. He's curious, though, as to what it could be and hopes they Yngvardians will let them in.

Trellus gets rudely awakened by his brother and informed of the commotion at the Pasha's tent. Grumbling, he gets his clothes on and goes over to the visitor's tent. He hears what she hears and affirms calmness is in order and joins any IA members going over to the Pasha's tent.

Bosk first things someone broke open a new barrel of ale, but Tink corrects him. The minotaur agrees that they should go check it out.

Garret awakes from a pleasant dream of iced drinks and a swimming pool. Leaving the dreaming behind, he steps out into the chill of the desert night air and goes with the others to the Pasha's tent.

Sesha wipes sleep from her eyes, enjoyng having both back. She voluteers to make a magical breakfast if called for.

It is pitch dark out in the desert but enough torches are staked here and there for the IA to make their way to the Pasha's tent. unfortunately guards bar the passage and the IA are kindly told to remain outside. Trellus, however, is allowed inside.

The Pasha is not going to let that happen and is conferring with his generals.

Wednesday March 4th, 2015 1:03:12 AM

Although it's only just past midnight, Kyan is already ready for breakfast.

Garret scampers around the huge Pasha's tent, looking for some forgotten flap to sneak under or peak through but finds the tent is quite secure. It is the Pasha's tent, after all, and heads could roll if it had been erected and secured in a shoddy manner. He returns to the group and plops down in the sand, "So, about that breakfast..."

Sesha politely reminds her friends that they should wait until the results of the meeting. If their meal gets interrupted, all benefits are lost.

Restlin starts telling a story of when he got punched by a zombie for trying to steal it's cookware. The story goes on but interest in it is spotty.

When Trellus returns, he informs the group that war is afoot. He doesn't know what their roll in it will be, as yet. Normally, he'd be assigned to a Commander, but since he's been assigned as liaison to the IA, he's not sure what he will do.

Kyan is glad of some action and starts gathering his things on the assumption they will join the fight.

Beri is presumptuous in thinking they had some key role in setting these events in motion. 'Did he say anything about what we will be doing during this attack?'

Bosk had no trouble finding a keg of local 'drink' during the day and has it stored away. The average keg holds 31 gallons at 8lbs per gallon (not including the keg itself) and for the top quality local spirit (wine from dates) of 10gp per bottle, at 25 ouces per bottle and 128 ounces per gallon = 5.12 bottles per gallon = 158.72 bottles per keg = 1,587.2 gp for a keg of the best wine.

Of course, Bosk can haggle over the price or purchase a half keg. Bottles being of glass, are rare in the desert but he can get clay versions, although the clay tends to diminish the taste. Use your diplomacy skills or Appraise skills if you want to barter.

Of course, there are cheaper wines too. :)

'Is there anything we can do? Perhap, if we enter the city first, we can break the curse and prevent the war from taking place.'

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the IA discuss what to do, or what they may be expected to do, or what they want to do, or if it is waffles or pancakes, or french toast, or baggets or crumpets. Maybe even biscuits and gravy?

It is only a matter of minutes before H'aarvard, the Royal Scribe, comes out the tent and heads over to the IA.

"Greetings, Strangers, known as the Iron Adventurers. Pasha Gaulikson has requested I meet with you in private."

He leads the way to the Visitor's tent. Once everyone is inside and where they can hear, the scribe opens up.

"As some of you have asked, here's the story that leads up to the current events. Pasha Gaulikson wanted to make sure you knew everything so you would not feel pushed to make a decision on what to do one way or the other.

A long time ago, centuries ago, we were all bans of wandring tribes that travelled these once grassy plains. There was plenty to go around so we traded and intermarried, and had rather peaceful lives. We even traded skins and food with the Gaelis for metals. But a certain Gaeli warrior rose to power that decided that trade was foolish when conquering and enslaving was better. With their warrior-like mentality, and our dispersed tribes, it did not take long to have us all in bondage and the whole plains under their control.

Their leader, known today as Grendel the Cruel, then sought to build a city here in likeness to their home, a mountain. So we had to quarry and bring tons of stone from the mountains and build a mountain here, with the city inside. It took dozens of years and thousands of deaths to finish it, but when it was done, the outside stone walls were impregnable and the city inside looked like it was in a mountain itself. Grendel then started taking our young men and women into the city for human sacrifices. That is when Gaulik, a young chief's son who had escaped to the mountains himself, was taken up by Sargrass and taught how
to fight. We know not much of what went on during those years but when he came out of the mountains, he had defeated the evil power behind Grendel the Cruel.

Gaulik then gathered men around him and started the war of liberation. The final battle was held in front of the Mountain-City itself where Grendel was mortally wounded. The Gaelis managed to bring Grendel the Cruel into the city and then shut and barred the doors. We know that Grendel the Cruel soon died and was buried, for the Gaelis that emerged some months later told us of a revolt and that the Gaelis' that repented from the evil deeds had won and wished to return to the mountains and leave all this behind.

We allowed them to go and when they left, they sealed the entrance. We intent to go in and clean the place out and dismantle the Mountain-City when these strange runes appeared on the doors. Try as we might we could not get past the magic of the runes so we took up the runes to be our symbol of unity and elected Gaulik as our first King of the new Unified Tribes. Pasha Siglief Gaulikson is a direct descendant of our first King.

It was soon after this the grass started wilting and in a few decades all that was left of the vast plains was a handful of oasis'. It was revealed to Gaulik by Sargrass himself that to break the curse one must enter the Mountain-City, find all those things Grendel the Cruel used to wield his power and destroy them along
with the remains of his body, if any.

Over the centuries our wise men finally figured out a way to crack the rune code and several brave warriors have managed to enter it but none ever returned.

Now, why am I telling you this? It is because you are Strangers here and this fight isn't yours. Pasha Gaulikson does not expect you to, nor will he ask you to get involved. Even Trellus is exempt, since his people are few and the Pasha does not want to deprive his people of strong warriors to carry on the line.

However, we leave in the morning, so you still have several hours to decide what to do. If you stay here, you are welcome, as our guests, and nothing will be held against you."

That seems to match what I've seen with the oasis and how nature is struggling. Odd, you wouldn't think that they would want to destroy the land. You would expect a warrior culture to want it to stay fruitful so they could take it over at a later time. Though, I suppose when magic is involved things are never straight forward.

Beri partakes in the feast that Sesha has set aside. Despite having already eaten, there is something about the meal the seems to give him both strength of body and mind, so that he feels he can take on anything.

Well, this should be an interesting adventure. Any chance that the temple was build with magic torches or anything so that it is lit on the inside? No tales mention building in booby traps or secret doors did they?

DM JT OOC: lots of ice and sleet tonight here in Dallas. May loose power over night due to ice on trees.
Just a heads up in case you don't hear from me in a few days. :}

DM JT IC:

Katinka has a couple important questions:
A) why now? What has changed?
B) What can he tells them of the divinations
C) Are the two related?

Katinka feels confident the man is being open and honest in his story and in his answers.

Restlin feels this is a lucky break. The teucri runes on the entance doors of the pyramid-city are their only clues of the Teucri so far, so might as well follow them. Even so, just the fact that he feels they will be aiding Sargrass is enough for him to throw in his sword arm.

Garret wonders how long ago all this happened and how it relates to the Teucri.

Trellus points out that the events in the story happened centuries ago. How there is a Teucri link, he doesn't figure.

Sesha, now knowing what time they have left, begins her Heroes Feast[/b] spell.

Beri ponders the futility of transforming a productive grasslands into a desert, expecting that smart
conquerors would want to keep the land fertile for later conquering again, concluding with [i]'Though, I suppose when magic is involved things are never straight forward.'

He asks if there are torches or other light sources inside and if there are any tales of traps or secret doors.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

H'aarvard is open and honest in his answers, even when he says he doesn't know the answer. Since they've never met any such Teucri as far as they know, the relationship of those strange people and the Mountain-city is unknown. All they know is that these strange runes appeared on the doors into the pyramid, seemingly overnight.
To their understanding, it was Sargrass that put them there, that is why they adopted the runes as their Unified Tribes symbol.

"You see, before all this happened, we worshiped the grass spirits, the water spirits, the animal spirits, and such. But then Gaulik arrived and told us of Sargrass, we change our worship to him. That's not saying we know a lot about him, very little really, but hey, he saved our people. Gaulik was what you would call a Paladin."

Getting out your trusty abacus, you figure that the appearance of the runes seem to coincide to a time shortly before the Teucri left Hook City, best estimates, withing a hundred years or so.

And why now? It has everything to do with the new divination results. The portents revealed some bad omens, a new twist to the divinations not seen until this night. The Pasha isn't going to leave things up for chance, acting preemptively.

H'aarvard points out to Beri that Grendel the Cruel was named just that for reason. Only a cruel being filled with such hate and evilness would curse the land that he can't have. But such a man could not be so successful without some other Power behind it. "Gaulik did not wish to discuss his ordeal in the mountains, but it was clear Grendel the Cruel got his power form some source in the mountains that Gaulik defeated. That source must still be an active power somehow to have kept the curse alive for so long. That is why we believe that if we destroy all personal things related to Grendel that he was buried with, we may end the curse. Sargrass has indicated this as well."

He takes a nibble at the feast before him and finishes his tale, "None of us have ever made it in and back out to tell us if there is light of any kind inside. I'm sure the Gaeli had some source when the city was occupied, but did they take all that stuff with them when they left? No one knows. Our warriors that have gone in have all taken their own light source."

If that is all the questions, he leaves and returns to the Pasha's tent. Otherwise he remains to answer any more questions.

So far, the IA have been positive in their desire to join the fight. That's no guarantee they all will. Morning will be the time to make the final decision. For now, it's midnight snack time and discussion time.

"I don't want to give up our pursuit of Socraterius, however, it is clear these people are in trouble. I'm in." Tink nods and folds her arms.

She enquires as to whether it is possible to speak directly with the seers. Hearing the details of the divinations and omens first hand may yield some important insight.

"Also, how many men is the Pasha planning on sending in? With the limited number of warriors I have seen in this camp, it may be unwise to commit to all of them - especially if none have ever returned."

Garret listens carefully to the discussions as he fills his mouth with the various food provided by Sesha. "There is enough to go around, right?" he says as he stuffs a piece of bread (for later) in his belt pouch.

After H'aarvard leads and confirms the timelines, Garret mumbles again, "See? Told you this is those Teucri. I have no idea of the connection between all the creation they did in Hook City and this place, but come on -- we would not have gone through that portal of theirs into this place unless they were related somehow."

"I do have to wonder what is inside that place that allows no one to come back out. It better not be another chit machine."

After the guest leaves, she settles back down for rest. She wasn't the type to lose sleep over much of anything.

Still, as an early riser, she has a little time to sit and commune with Serenbeth in the desert. She sits and sips a dark, aromatic brown coffee from Pot pot, thanking her tutors for showing her the prestidigitation spell for the thousandth time.

She ponders Restin, the Teucri, and wonders how different their current adventure might be had they chosen a different benefactor on the Night of a Thousand Callers.

Is that... is that a coffee spell? Truly you were blessed to have been taught such a wonderful spell.

Well, in any case I am all for helping these people, not to mention restoring balance to this land and allowing nature to once again thrive as it should. And with a little luck that mountain will be nice and cool on the inside and not just a giant oven.

Bosk smells the aromatic brew coming from Pot pot. God's bless you, that smells good! Gargul might be the Unblinking Eye, but I find nothing helps keep my eyes open like fresh brewed coffee. Do you mind? he says as he raises a glass towards the animated cauldron. Running one hand along his steelgrass blade he pictures the Sargrass and is saddened to see the majestic grasses so completely destroyed by the curse. Taking a sip of his drink he continues. It looks to me like Socraterius has a limited number of options to survive the desert. If he was not swallowed up by the desert he would have had to come here, met up with the Gaeli or entered the city. Since he is not here that leaves just the last two options. I say we enter the city and attempt to break the curse and prevent the war. Besides, what good is being Paladin for the Dead if you do not interact with the dead. If his curse is still in effect this strong, I have to assume part of him is still here as well. This power might be giving the curse power, but I have never heard of a power aiding someone so long after they have met Gargul's judgement. I wouldn't be surprised if he is somehow bound to this curse...or to is land.

Katinka is still suspicious that Socraterius is hanging around somewhere in this desert and is reluctant to get sidetracked from that pursuit, but agrees to join the Yngvardians in their fight.

She wants to talk to the Seers herself in hopes of getting some important insight and grills H'aarvard on the numbers of troops that will be sent.

Garret wastes no time with the Midnight meal before him, even stuffing some in his pockets, it may not occur to him that the remainder of the meal not eaten, magically conjured will magically de-conjure itself when the spell expires.

The halfling seems to be putting a few pieces of the Teucri puzzle together by linking Hook City and this place. But right now it is like putting two dinosaur bones together which may, or may not, be related.

Restlin digs into the food and speculates that if there is another Chit Machine hidden inside the City-Pyramid, hopefully it isn't broken. But if it is, Tink can talk sense into it, playing on his faupas from earlier.

Sesha lets the 'dig' from Restlin roll off like water but sticks her tongue out at Restlin anyway. An early riser, she is up before dawn and maka a pot-pot of coffee. While sipping the coffee, she ponders what their fate would have been if they had chosen a different Hook City faction to support.

Kyan is in, to him, there's no 'pondering' to do.

Beri smells coffee and is elated. The druid would like nothing better than to restore the balance to the land. Of course, do to that you have to actually get in and break the curse, not just route an army of fanatical religious fanatics.

Bosk smells the coffee too and wants some as well, holding out a glass. He remembers Sargrass and is saddened to see the majestic grasses of this area so completely destroyed by a curse. He then rationalizes his need, or desire, to help the Yngvardians, throwing poor Socraterius into the mix.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

H'aarvard shakes his head at the request to see the Seers. "They are busy right now looking into the
portents for the battle coming up. But I assure you the Seers are quite competent in interpreting the
results of their inquiries."

As to the troop complement, H'aarvard does not say how many warriors the Pasha has, he's not really sure himself, not relevant to his job, but counts many thousands, from foot warriors, camel cavalry, and even the elite camel flying corps.

"Oh, we are not going IN to the Mountain-City. The Gaeli have been camped outside it for many months, trying to figure out how to get in. We are going to 'disperse' this army and put an end to this nonsense of trying to get in. These Gaeli are by no means a representative of the race. They are an extreme radical branch. These fanatics crop up every now and again but this one is the only one with such a large following as to actually try to get in."

DM JT OOC: The specific size of the Pasha's camp was not detailed when the PCs entered, but it holds a lot of people. And the Pasha's camp is only one of many dispersed throughout the desert at the various oasises.

DM JT IC:
The IA enjoy another fantastic magical meal with special benefits provided by Sesha, during which time the IA discuss the events and its causes. They all agree to help the Yngvardians. During the rest of the night they hear the sounds of an army mustering and when the sun finally peeks above the horizon, H'aavard rejoins the PCs as they get their last things together.

Informed that the IA have decided to join the Yngvardians in their fight against the Gaeli fanatics, H'aavard is pleased and conveys a message sent by Pasha Gaulikson in case they did decide to join.

"Pasha Gaulikson would very much like to see you in his private chambers as soon as you can."

The IA find a heavy dust in the air due to the large amount of activity during the night and as they head towards the Pasha's tent they can 'feel' the emptyness of the camp as a large number of people are now outside the camp and marching off.

The IA are invited inside by a Royal Bodyguard, a huge burly man that makes Bosk look small. The Pasha is standing, attended by his personal servants, clad in his battle armor, and his advisers standing around, discussing something. When they IA enters they cut off their discussion and the Pasha welcomes the IA with a smile that fades quickly as he talks.

"I'll not waste any time as there is no time to waste. Early this morning, before dawn, one of my scouts returned with news from the Mountain-City. He reports that there was much jubilation in the Gaeli camp outside the city, so they must have managed to get inside the city! Our divinations were right that the time had arrived to put a stop to this, I just hope we are not too late!"

He paces back and forth a couple of times then turns to the IA. "Since you have volunteered to help us in this battle, I feel we need you best not in the thick of the battle, but to enter the city and hunt down whoever got in. While my army engages the Gaeli, your small group with your special skills, could slip through a gap we create and make to the city's doors. I've had a copy of the scroll that has been used in the past to decipher the runes and get in. Of course, once inside the city, the only way out is to find the cursed Grendel the Cruel's remains and destroying them. I know it is a lot to ask, but where others have failed, your group seems unique enough to succeed in not only stopping the Gaeli group that went in, but breaking the curse as well. Naturally, I can only ask you to take upon yourselves this task. If you rather not, that is understandable and nothing will be held against you. It is a monumental task to do for a people you don't really know and don't really owe a debt to."

Anyway, he doesn't want to drink all Sehsa's coffee, but will if there's enough left. He prepares spells, eschewing day-to-day usefulness over battle ability, then heads out with his friends.

He shakes his head at the halfling's suggestion. "If this temple has taken the lives of every one of their people who has entered, we need to save our strength.

"I mean, we're pretty great at battle, but we're not an army. I think the Pasha's suggestion is solid. Besides, if these Gaeli aren't inherently evil, then there's probably a large number there who are more young and impressionable than just plain bad. "Hey Bosk, think you could take him?"...When Garret says this, assuming it is not said so the man can hear, Bosk smiles imperceptibly and gives the faintest hint of a nod. This mans size is intimidating and his dress shows his to be a fierce warrior and the horned cleric has little doubt that the man could best him in a straight fight, but the minotaur's strength had always come from his ability to out think his opponents and do the unexpected.

When the Pasha speaks and Garret responds Bosk makes an obvious look of disapproval. After Sesha speaks he adds, We mean no disrespect. Garret is a good fighter, but his mind wanders. I do not think he followed the plan or overlooked the problems associated with trying to send an army into the city. I feel your plan is for the best.

Grendel is of the dead and his remains need to be destroyed and sent to the Shadowlands, of which I am one of its naturalized citizens. I have been called the Hands of the Eye, the Lord of Life and Death, and the Paladin of the Dead. I remain in the "real" wold as the go-between, negotiator, troubleshooter, and general fixer for The Unblinking Eye of Gargul. The army is on the move. (Co-DM JonathanT)
Monday March 9th, 2015 3:29:13 PM

Katinka remains quiet but does wonder why the Pasha sends them into the city of no return.

Garret issues a taunt of sorts in jest at Bosk, asking the minotaur if he thinks he could take on the huge bodyguard. The bodyguard smirks.

Garret suggest to the Pasha that the IA could help rid the Yngvardians of the Gaeli for good.

Restlin spends a little time with Wardd before the others are up. He things the god had some hand in the turn of events. It just seems too coincidental. Wardd, however, just laughs.

Restlin's take on the Pasha's battle plan is that it is sound. Why go slaughtering large numbers of possibly deluded young minds full of mush.

Sesha gives her take on the Pasha's request as well. Giving the Pasha the visible effect of dispersing the Gaeli fanatics is very important to the kingdom's morale. Ruffling the halfling's head, she
points out that Restlin is really keen on seeing anything Teucri and who knows what Teucri stuff might
be inside?

Beri asks the Pasha how many Gaeli made it inside.

Bosk gives Garret the nod that he's sure he could take on the big bodyguard. No one will ever
really know, of course, unless some friendly test of strength were proposed once all this is over.
Bosk has an entirely different reason to go into the Pyramid-City. As an agent of Gargul, he feels
it his duty to send any remnant of Grendel's soul, if still here, speeding onward to meet Gargul.

Trellus' response is short and to the point.

Kyan chimes in, mentioning Restlin's special sharp pointy weapon.

Garret takes his friends' comments easily and waits for any further from the Pasha.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Pasha Sigleif Gaulikson explains that the reports are that only a small number entered the city. It would be
foolish for a huge number to enter with no guarantee of getting out. He suspects that if the first group takes too long to return, another will go in, and another, and another, and so forth, now that they know how to get in.

The Pasha smiles at Garret's assertions of their strength against an army but assures the halfling, and the others, that defeating the Gaeli army isn't the main priority.
"Catching those that got in and making sure they don't succeed is the main priority. I have a superior force in quality and numbers and victory is certain. But what then if those inside managed to get Grendel's items of power and manage to get away to who knows where?

However, once inside, who best to figure out how to get out? Your complement of skills and magic make you far more suited than my selected group. Our desert life is very isolated in comparison to the rest of these lands and it is difficult to acquire such powerful items as your little group has. Your group alone has the best chance of succeeding in both tasks, catch the Gaeli group and getting back out. I'm quite confident my selected group can catch the Gaeli group, but I'm more confident in you returning than they."
He says the last with a grim countenance.

But still, it is only a request for volunteers. The Pasha sends out the orders to get the army moving so as not to miss the rendezvous point with the rest of his forces. The IA are invited to travel along with the Pasha's bodyguards and the Pasha will explain more about the task.

He shows the copy of the scroll that deciphers the runic cryptic message on the doors.
"There are wide steps that lead up to a 20 foot wide, 30 foot tall entry into the Mountain-city. The doors there have been removed long ago. There is then a 30 foot corridor that opens up into a foyer. This is where caravans who's turn to enter the city waited for the final go-ahead. Inside this huge foyer is where you'll find the massive doors that lead into the Mountain-city proper and the one with the runes. Long ago we tried busting down the doors with battering rams and magical means but nothing made even a scratch. But once the runes were figured out, getting by the doors was not a problem. However, after many
warriors entered and did not return, fewer warriors had a desire to try and most of us have accepted the desert life. It has been many years since anyone has tried again. Only a couple brave warriors have tried in my lifetime."

The scroll describes how certain runes match up. It appears the runes, although stuck to the doors, can be moved around to form a 'phase'. The scroll indicates which runes to move and in which order they are to be lined up.

The whole inside of the Pyramid is one big city. However, since it has been centuries since anyone was inside (and came out), the description is a bit sketchy. It is square on the inside, of course, and the city was divided into four quadrants. One for the merchants, one for housing, one for administration, and one for the royal palace. That's about all that anyone remembers from the stories. There are no maps of the inside, of course.

The army travels along and the Pasha answers any further questions the IA have.
