A Warm Homecoming

DM Rob - Home Sweet Home
Monday February 9th, 2015 12:04:09 AM

Aex tries out her newfound talents, and finds she is able to craft a few nice little ointments. She starts off with a CLW ointment, which ends up being a pale pink in color. CMW and CSW wounds come next - pale green, and bright orange respectively. Regardless of color, the effects are perfect. Wounds are treated in no time.

Terser doesn't mind the color - nor the hint of mint - of the salves. In fact, he's feeling stronger than ever! Not one for sailing ships, he is quite happy to be told which rope to pull, and where to stand.

Coer covers his map reading mistake by suggesting that someone turned the map upside down. Sure. That's what it was.

Captains Coer and Jozhur are both in agreement that a quick stop in Bonetown is the way to go. But only a quick one. See that Brother Mirel's body is returned to the church for proper burial, and then on to Rum. If one deity can understand showing respect to the dead, it's Gargul. A pitstop in Bonetown will likely not draw his ire.

Yel'kno voices his thoughts on the Lord of Life and Death, and unfortunately Magana is at hand to overhear it. She raises herself to full size and let's the paladin know what she really thinks! (Excellent roleplaying you two. I have no issue provided it stays in-character and the two find a way to cooperate)

Zeoll smiles and tries to defuse the situation. He neither agrees nor disagrees with Yel'knos view, but his clawing of the deck shows his unease. Of course, he's a linotaur at sea. He's uneasy regardless.

Coer puts his foot down to knock it off.

The rest of the crew are very quiet as they go about their duties. Even Horace barely says a word. It's as if the past few days have knocked the wind from their sails. Unlike the party, they never signed on to be heroes or hardened adventurers. They're sailors and privateers. Dealing with vengeful deities wasn't part of the job description and who knows what it could do to their life expectancy.

---------------------------------------

The voyage back to Bonetown is thankfully uneventful. No signs of any seaspawn, sahuagin, or Gods. Just smooth sailing for a change and finally Bonetown comes into view.

It's significantly busier than the last time the "Lionfish" was here. Numerous small and medium sized ships can be seen docked and anchored in the harbor, whilst five larger vessels are anchored just outside the harbor practically blocking access to it.

As the party head towards the packed port, two long skiffs approach. A man stands on the bow of one of the boats and waves towards the "Lionfish" in a friendly manner. He is smiling as the skiff quickly approaches the port side of the "Lionfish" whilst the other heads to the starboard. The man deftly grabs ahold of the footholds and loudly calls out "Requesting permission to come aboard Captain! Edwin, sir, of the Shipping Guild here to help safely guide your vessel into harbor"

Zeoll looks around with great interest -- it has been so long since he set foot in Bonetown. [OOC: It was about a year and a half ago real time.]

From Bonetown to Centaur Island to Gullport to Sanctuary Cove, and back to Bonetown. What a trip!

He looks forward to visiting the Catacombs, and selling off all the party loot. [OOC: see below]

But first there is a challenge -- the Shipping Guild.

Zeoll tries to recall if this is the usual practice for the port. Know Local 22.

Either way, there is likely little way to avoid having the official come aboard. Besides, we have nothing to hide. So Zeoll steps forward to help ease the conversation.

"Welcome Edwin," the old liontaur says. "I'm surre the captain will let you aboarrd in a moment. So tell me, what news of Bonetown? And I would be willing to sharre ourr sad news out of Gulfporrt and Sanctuarry Cove."

Zeoll is the first to welcome the approaching man to the Lionfish. Throughout his travels, Zeoll does not recall seeing the Shipping Guild in Bonetown before. But then, it has been such a long time. Perhaps as the port has grown the guild has taken more interest?

Aex is bordering between happiness and excitement. Happy that her salves do the trick, and excited to finally see Bonetown firsthand. If she's lucky, the party might even invite her to stay with them in Portside House.

Yel'kno doesn't recall seeing shipping guides in Bonetown before either. He calls back to the man indicating they are from the town and know their own way, but this does little to stop Edwin. The man has reached the Lionfish's foothold and has begun climbing the side of the ship.

Magana keeps an eye on the skiffs. She sees no signs of however they do have ropes and hooks. The men in the skiff seem quite relaxed, and a few give a wave to the taur. None have any weapons drawn, though each have daggers by their sides. Combined there would be less than a dozen men in total on the skiffs. They would need to be exceptional sailors and warriors to be any match at all for the Lionfish.

Terser, Jozhur and Coer watch with interest.

Edwin has now climbed aboard the side of the Lionfish and is calmly walking towards the ships wheel where Coer and Yel'kno stand - despite not formally being invited. "Of course, good sirs. Should you wish to guide your own vessel I will of course not interfere but will be glad to offer suggestions to help you steer a safe course into the harbor. Then again, if you wish me to take the wheel for you, I will happily do so. Wouldn't want any collisions now would we?" Edwin smiles and gives a good-hearted elbow to Yel'kno. "We have done this many times and are here only to ensure all vessels have safe passage into the port. Damage to any ships or cargo is in noones interest. Speaking of which, might I humbly suggest steering a few degrees more to port? We've noticed more wind coming from the west, and you may find steering into it makes the job of entering the port easier. Only a suggestion of course sir"

"There is a vacancy for a vessel of your size in the north western areas of the docks. Over that way, sir" Edwin points past the five larger vessels at the entrace of the harbor "If you steer past these ships, turn a few degrees north, then bear to port you will be fine"

Edwin can see Magana's suspicion of the two skiffs and tries to ease her fears "They are only here to help guide your ship to dock. Should you venture too close to another vessel or look like you may be in trouble, they will help try and nudge your mighty ship to safety. Better to have some scraped paint than a broken hull, eh? All part of the service we provide"

Profession (Sailor) DC10: Highlight to display spoiler: {It is not an uncommon practise for vessels to be guided into busy ports by a smaller vessel, or for a maritime pilot to be the one steering the larger vessel.}

Whether Edwin didn't hear Zeoll's question about news of Bonetown, or just doesn't know what to say, is unclear.

Terser (Warren G) [22/13/19 -- CMD 23 -- HP 29/87
Tuesday February 10th, 2015 12:37:53 AM

Terser continues to do as he is told while the ship sails into port. It's quite different than docking in the previous small towns, and the town itself is quite distracting. He has never quite seen its like. He tries to avoid the wrath of his captain when his gaping eyes and dropped jaw cause him to drop the rope that was holding a sail in place and he quickly draws it back into position.

After docking, in response to Zeoll's question, Terser indicates that the ring he's wearing has already proven its use against the seaspawn, and it would be worth keeping. Also, the use of the headband is clear.

DM Rob - Home Sweet Home
Wednesday February 11th, 2015 12:05:00 AM

Now we're talking! Everyone posting. I like it :)

Yel'kno gives Edwin a nod and permits him to continue his duties. He is still somewhat distrustful of Edwin though, and has a quiet word to Magana about it.

Magana nods, having being given the task of keeping an eye on the newcomer. Arms folded, she stares down on the "little" man.

Zeoll tries to get a feel for Edwin. His gut tells him that the man is just going about his job. Edwin may be acting a little self-conscious with what he does, but he does have Magana breathing down his neck after all. That would be enought to unsettle even a hardened sailor. Either way, Edwin does sweat a little.

Terser continues toiling on the ship. He hasn't been to Bonetown before so has no idea what to expect. Based on all the tales of pirates I guess there was always the chance that the ship would be attacked simply sailing into the harbour.

Aexana stays in the background, keeping an eye on things. Like Terser, she hasn't been in Bonetown before either so doesn't know what to expect. Maybe this sort of welcome is the norm?

Jozhur doesn't recall the harbour ever being this busy before, and tries to ascertain why this might be the case. Coer too is a little concerned. The party run-ins with the Shipping Guild have been mixed. Slavers in one case, though the representative they met in Gullport - Tezra - was quite nice. She did defuse a potentially hostile situation after all.

As the Lionfish steers past the larger vessels it is clear to see that they are warships, with enough siege weapons to make Coer drool. Light & Heavy Ballistas, catapults, and even a few arrow springals. These warships fly the flag of the Shipping Guild. They're either preparing for something, or someone has seriously ticked them off. The Lionfish comes in at a modest 75ft long, but these warships are all at least 100ft long and armed to the teeth.

Docked in the Bonetown harbour can be seen all manner of ships. Coer and Jozhur recognise the flags of the Elf Bloods and the Harbour Master among them. But there are at least another four or five flags that they do not recognise. Most likely independant vessels, like the Lionfish.

The Lionfish navigates its way to dock, and Edwin carefully pulls a ream of papers from inside his coat. You get the feeling he is going to the effort of acting slowly so as not to startle anyone (Magana in particular). "Now if I can just help you fill out these docking forms, sir, I'll take my leave" The paperwork looks fairly standard. Name of the ship, name of the captain, reason for visiting Bonetown, expected time in port, number of able bodied sailors, cargo, etc. It looks to be done in duplicate, so a fair assumption would be that the captain gets to keep a copy.

The small skiffs have maintained their positions on either side of the Lionfish for the entire journey, and have not taken any aggressive actions.

If you have visited Bonetown before: Highlight to display spoiler: {This type of paperwork is the norm. Historically it was completed on the docks when the ship had docked. Perhaps the Shipping Guild have implemented some type of efficiency improvement? Perhaps a way to make sure the paperwork gets done at all? In Bonetown of all places, you could imagine many captains not wanting to do any sort of paperwork once docked}

Tula is currently directing the crew and ensuring everything is tied down properly as the Lionfish comes to a stop at the docks.

She turns to address the Edwin. "The port is must busier than the last time I was here. What's going on? Why are the Shipping Guild's warships here?"

DM Rob - The innocence of youth
Thursday February 12th, 2015 12:48:26 AM

Jozhur is in favour of a few nights rest and relaxation. Surely the crew (and party) have earned it.

Yel'kno refuses to sign any paperwork, despite it being common practise and commonly agreed law. After all, they're not visiting Bonetown. They live here! Surely that makes them exempt from any documentation?

Magana isn't too keen on staying for too long though. Her deity has called her to Rum, and that is where she will go. She tries acting a little more diplomatic with Edwin, but the man still appears uneasy around her. "Um, er, you'll have to take that up with someone on the, er, docks".

Coer is not able to get much more out of the man. Edwin seems more relaxed around Coer, but not by much. Then again, its not like the party welcomed him with open arms. He's been intimidated and the group refused to fill in the paperwork he so diligently brought to them.

Zeoll isn't impressed by the paperwork either, and determines that no matter where you go you can't escape red-tape. Then again, that idea of low-flow toilets might not be so bad. All you'd need is a dedicated gnome to work out the details.

Terser thinks it is just common sense to keep a well armed fleet about when pirates casually walk the streets. Perhaps it is time someone tried enforcing the law in Bonetown?

With a sigh, Edwin tucks the unsigned papers back into his jacket. "I hope this won't cause any problems for you when you wish to leave. Enjoy your stay" he adds, as he gives a casual wave and steps onto one of the skiffs and heads back out into the bay.

Finally though, the party are home! Jozhur volunteers to buy the first round of drinks, and that is all the excuse needed for the party to disembark.

"Any standing orders, Captain?" Tula asks of Coer before he leaves

It is mid-afternoon now. Standing by the edge of one of the adjacent piers can be seen the harbormaster and a few of his men. From this distance you can clearly see him sneer at the sight of the Lionfish - the crew still not in his good books.

Up ahead, three children - two girls and boy - can be seen playing by the edge of the docks where the Lionfish is now anchored.

"Rarrr! I'm Magana the Minotaur! I'm going to smash you!" boasts the older girl. 7 maybe 8.
"Well I'm Captain Coer, the toughest pirate ever!" the boy, clearly the oldest announces as he flexes his muscles
"Hey, no fair Renal! You said I could be Coer this time!" the younger girl pouts.
"That's ok Milly, you can be Sam" the older girl tries to smooth things over
"Aww but he's so small. I'm so much taller than he is!" Milly moans "I'll just be Jozhur the Assassin. He's real sneaky"

The children giggle and laugh as they play fight, but it's at this point the boy sees the party approaching. His eyes widen and he turns pale and stands still. The girls then realise what it is he has seen. Its.. the crew of the Lionfish in person!

The two older children start to slowly back away, with the girl hiding by the boy. The younger girl (Milly) is stuck fast. She trembles but doesn't move away. She now stands between the party and the other two children.

Whilst Edwin may not be happy with the party, the crew sure are after Yel'kno graciously begifts them 50 gold to share. Tula gives a formal salute to him, and then sets to divying up the gold. Some bosuns might try and split the gold based on rank and see some get uneven shares. Not Tula. Each member of the crew is given precisely an even share. Yel'kno watches as Horace rubs two silver pieces together while salivating and chanting "Here kitty kitty! Here kitty kitty!". Cats of Bonetown beware.

Coer leaves orders that the ship is to be restocked and ready to ship out very soon. Sure, the crew can have the night to relax, but keep in mind this is a town of vice. The crew are to keep their wits and be ready to head off.

Terser and Coer try to be nice to the children. Coer flexes his significant muscles that are close to the same size as the boys head. Terser takes a different approach and flips a gold coin to the littlest. Hey, dwarven children always perked up at the sight of gold!

Milly though does not extend her hand to catch the coin, and it bounces off her body to the ground. She is too distracted by Magana.

Magana, with all the subtlety of a, well, minotaur, talks of blood whilst carrying a dead body on her shoulder. Aex and Zeoll try to smooth things over with the little girl, but it is too late.

Milly covers her eyes with her hands and begins to bawl. Not sobbing, not crying, bawling. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean anything by it. Please don't kill me!"

Zeoll - ever suspicious - is wary of children playing by docks in a town of thieves and brigands. But in this case, all he can see and sense is a group of children playing harmlessly and getting scared out of their wits by the party.

The party walk off before they can do any more harm. Zeoll looks back and sees the two older children move to Milly's side.

The boy picks up the coin Terser tossed her and holds it out for her. The noise has attracted the attention of a dishevelled woman who hurries over to the children. The poor woman grabs the girl by the shoulders and drags her away with the other children in tow. "Now stay away from those Ga'al loving, Annoir bribing fools. Understood? Just wait til your father gets home!"

----------------------

The party finally make it back to their house. It is just as they remembered it. The Brothers have taken fairly good care of it in the party's absence. Sure, the walls are looking a bit patchy, but it still stands tall.

"Welcome back, friends. Oh, and I see you have brought company" greets Brother Engev with open arms. He'd been sweeping the stone entranceway as the party approach. "Did you get my message? Did you find Brother Mirel?" he asks hopefully.

Perfect posting again! Nice job guys! Please keep it up :)

The question was asked about Catacombs shopping. Please feel free to shop in the CC as of right now, but aim to have it all done by this time next week. Your PC needn't leave the party to go off and do their shopping, but may stay with the group and have the equipment "appear". Thanks!

Zeoll gathers the party loot from all of them what's carrying it. He staggers off under the load to the Catacombs entrance here in Bonetown, where he'll cash it all out and return with gold for everybody -- except the phylactery, to be kept as a party item, and the ring of the ram, which Terser is keeping for himself. Oh, and the tree feather token, which was used for the new mizzen-mast. Oh, and he keeps the unused scroll of Raise Dead, also as party treasure.

He wonders how that lady comes to be slandering the group as Ga'al-lovers. First of all, who even knows about that besides us, and second of all, we just got here, so how did the news travel faster than we did! He'll try to Gather Info to answer those questions, as well as to figure out what's the deal with the new high profile for the shipping guild.

Zeoll returns from the Catacombs with the loot accounted for.

Total cash: 49,385
Amulet +2: 8,000
Ram Ring: 8,600
TOTAL to be divided: 65,385

Divided among: Coer, Magana, Zeoll, Aexana, Terser, Jozhur, Yel'kno.

That's 9,341 each.

Terser gets the Ring and 741gp
Magana gets the Amulet and 1,341gp
Coer, Zeoll, Aexana, Jozhur, and Yel'kno get 9,341 gp

Note that Zeoll retains possession of three party items:

- Oil of Shipspeed. When applied to the ship's wheel, the speed of the ship increases by 30' per round for 10 rounds. Any checks involving the ship, or made by the ship's captain, have a +5 bonus to the roll for the 10 rounds. This item belongs to the group and does not count against anyone's wealth totals. This original Fate item was granted by CDM Jerry to the Bonetown party on Jan. 31, 2014.

- Phylactery of Positive Channeling

- Scroll of Raise Dead

DM Rob - Extra Post to keep things interesting
Saturday February 14th, 2015 12:37:05 AM

Jozhur is somewhat taken aback by being called an assassin. What sort of reputation has he built? Then again, the children implied Magana was a brute and Coer a pirate. What things have these children been told? Or overheard?

Magana is the one to break the bad news to Brother Engev. The priest covers his mouth with his hand in shock. "This .. this is terrible news. We feared the worst but prayed for the best. Please. Please bring the body inside. Lay it carefully on one of the beds and I will tend to it." Brother Engev looks quite saddened by this news. Though he may hold onto hope that the body within is not Brother Mirel, he will soon receive confirmation.

Jozhur bows his head in respect of the dead man being brought home.

Terser is curious who the Annoir fellow might be. Probably best to ask one of the group when a quiet moment presents itself.

Through the doorway the group can see Brother Lansel approach. The younger of the two priests looks quite happy - blissfully unaware of Brother Mirel's fate. "Welcome back, friends! I trust you will find we have kept the house in good stead. Ah, and you have brought visitors! I hope there is room for everyone. We already have a few guests you see. I believe Lew and Karin are in the sitting room. They said they were friends of yours, Master Coerator?" Brother Mirel continues smiling, quite proud of the care he has taken of the house. He stands tall and looks over the group curiously "Will the rest of your group be joining us later? Where is Master Spirysn'rar?"

-------------------------------

Meanwhile, Zeoll sets his mind on determining who has been slandering the groups good name. Strangely noone will talk to him directly. He draws numerous sideways glances, people go quiet whenever he approaches and mumble when he leaves. A few even dare to "accidentally" bump shoulders with the taur as they pass him but they continue walking. Still, Zeoll does manage to hear quite a bit. The rumour mill has gone wild with tales of the Lionfish:
- That the party captured Captain Annoir and rather than return him for trial in Bonetown, accepted a share of his treasure to set him free. "How else did they get so rich so quickly? Traitorous scum."
- That the party are responsible for the demise of a peaceful fishing hamlet a little north-west of here. Why, the people here had only heard good things about Gullport. But rumour is that the Lionfish visited, and now that town is quiet. "Not a soul was spared. Poor sods. Now I hear the Lionfish has come back from Sanctuary Cove. Hope that lot are ok. I was planning on raiding them next week"
- That the party have allied themselves with the vile Ga'al. How can they even show their faces around here having done such a thing? "A friend of mine heard from a merchant who overheard that they have even taken to trying to grow heartseeds in their ships hold! I'm telling you, now is the time to invest in some good armor"
- That ships have been mysteriously vanishing all around the southern seas wherever the Lionfish goes "At first I thought it was just the weather, but then this guy with a great scorpion tattoo said it was the Lionfish. After all I've heard, I believe him"
- That the Elfbloods were on a mercy mission, trying to send food to a convent near Rum when the ship was attacked by the Lionfish! "The way I was told, they didn't even take the food! Just watched it sink"

Zeoll (and anyone he shares these rumours with) may make a Knowl History DC20 check Highlight to display spoiler: {Bonetown was founded by several pirate groups. The two most notable being the Deadjacks and the Pirates of Jack. Though previously one combined force, they took tremendous losses to free Aisildur from Ga'al. To be thought of as Ga'als ally in Bonetown could shorten a persons life}

What's more, it's not just one or two people talking. With the Lionfish now in the harbor the party are the topic of the day. Wherever he goes Zeoll overhears more and more of the same rumours. (OOC: In diplomacy terms the whole town currently view the party as "unfriendly").

Rumours are rife. But they are just rumours, right? Surely the group aren't that bad? It would seem in this town that the party are becoming celebrities. (OOC: In familiarity/disguise terms you are all "Recognizable on sight")

As for rumours on the Shipping Guild, that looks like the second most talked about thing in the taverns.
- A Shipping Guild vessel arrived about a week ago, stayed for barely a few hours and then left. The next day five Shipping Guild warships turn up and have been docked out in the bay ever since. They've even appropriated one of the buildings by the docks to turn into some sort of office. "And now the Lionfish shows up? Trust me, as soon as my ship's repaired I'm heading for open water. If I catch the man who broke my wheel..."
- A Shipping Guild emissary is in town. "Have you seen the guy? Prancing about in his fancy clothes. Pompous twit"
- The warships are exactly that. Ships for war "I tried to count the number of ballistas they got pointed this way, but, my maths ain't that great. But there's a lot of 'em!"

There is no talk of any other Shipping Guild news or activity.

Yel'kno greets the two brothers warmly. If only they knew the adventures he had had!

Brother Lansel edges closer to Coer so as to speak with him quietly "I'm not so sure they knew you were coming at all. They arrvied here a little over a week ago looking for you. They said they knew you and wanted to request sanctuary here. Here of all places! We couldn't very well throw them onto the streets so have allowed them to stay in the attic. I don't think they've left the building since they got here but have been no trouble at all. Lovely company in fact. They've done som cooking, some cleaning. Seem like nice fellows"

It's at this point that Lansel realises the bundle Magana carries isn't her luggage but is in fact a corpse. He looks to Engev and goes silent.

The names Lew and Karin don't ring any bells for Jozhur or Coer. Whilst Jozhur sets to find out who these two are straight away, Coer freshens up and fetches a bottle of rum. Of all the rooms in this house the kitchen is the most immaculate. Everything in its place and everything perfectly clean. It truly is Brother Engev's pride and joy. Historically Coer may have left the cork from the rum bottle lying on the counter, but given the appearance of the room, he'd likely hear all about it from Brother Engev.

Aex is very curious to learn whatever she can about Bonetown. Her hopes of a herbal shop may be exceeded when she notices the potion sign hanging over the eastern-most door of the house. The party share this house with the two brothers, who in turn, run their own businesses from the front two rooms. Brother Lansel is a scribe (of both magical and non-magical scrolls) and Brother Engev runs a potion shop. Having access to both of these from their very own house, well, that's convenient!

The party - minus Zeoll - make their way into the house, and one by one to the sitting room where the guests are waiting. Though the names 'Lew' and 'Karin' were unfamiliar, the faces are recognisable for some. Lew and Karin were the bodyguards of the shipping guild emissary Terza. The party met all three in Gullport. Why, Karin even fell under the influence of the Call of the Sea before being rescued by the party. (Refer DM posts from Jan 28th 2014)

On seeing the party enter, both men get to their feet. They are both very well dressed (the shipping guild does pay well after all) and are noticeably unarmed. Neither man speaks.

DM Rob - Faces from the past
Tuesday February 17th, 2015 12:16:38 AM

Aex is absolutely thrilled to learn that the Brothers have various shops right at her new doorstep. From her observation, Brother Engev (the potion maker) is the older of the brothers. If she were to speak to one of the other members of the party they might tell her that Brother Engev is not only older, but perhaps Brother Lansel's senior. At the moment however, Brother Engev is too preoccupied with the body Magana brought in. He excuses himself from the room, shutting the sitting room doors behind him.

Zeoll is concerned by the rumours he has heard but chooses not to challenge any of them. He is apart from the party after all, and though he is quite skilled it may be suicidal to take on all of Bonetown. Best leave those antics to Magana. Zeoll heads home to report what he has learned.

Once there, he too joins the others in the sitting room.

Coer does the honours and begins to pour drinks. Is there a more traditional greeting in Bonetown than to share a bottle of rum?

Yel'kno is suspicious of anyone that enters his house. His eyes glow momentarily as he scans them for any signs of evil. Not a trace can be found on either man.

Magana drops her usual intimidating self to greet the two men. Perhaps as their occupation as bodyguards and defenders she pays them a mark of respect?

Jozhur cuts straight to the point. Sure, it's good to see a familiar face - but why? What's up? Nobody just drops by for tea and cookies anymore.

It is Magana and Jozhur who think to ask of Terza.

The two men look to each other with sullen faces before Lew speaks up "Terza is no longer with us. She is dead"

"She might still be alive, you don't know that!" Karin spits out angrily

Lew looks calmly to his companion and then back to the party "True, her body has not been recovered, however, she has been officially listed as deceased by the Shipping Guild"

Both men sit down and gratefully accept some rum from Coer.

Lew continues "Terza vanished from our vessel after our departure from Gullport. The Guild determined that she succumbed to the Call of the Sea and drowned. WE don't believe that"

"We were at Gullport. We know the Call." Karin grimaces slightly as he recalls the experience "We didn't hear anything the night she vanished."

"I believe she was murdered" Lew continues, raising a hand to stop Karin from protesting "It is easy enough to dispose of a body at sea. And that leads us to where we are now. We humbly ask for asylum until the Shipping Guild leaves Bonetown. Once they leave we will secure our own way out of this port."

"And if you help us, we can help you with the situation brewing here" Karin adds "Surely you noticed the Shipping Guild presence here?"

"No, help us or not we will still do what we can to help you. It is what Terza would want" Lew holds his head up proudly as he looks to Karin, who reluctantly nods in agreement.

DM Rob - The new man in town
Wednesday February 18th, 2015 2:31:26 AM

Much of the group is in agreement to keep the two men safe. But there are so many questions! Why is the Shipping Guild here? What happened to Terza? Why are the men in hiding? From whom? The questions come thick and fast. Aexana's observation of it being like a tennis match is a good comparison.

The men look to each other and nod "I knew they would help us" Karin smiles to Lew

"You have many questions, and truth be told, I'm glad we have a chance to tell our story. I fear the Guild would not be as welcoming.

Terza was our responsibility. It was our duty to ensure her safety, and having done so for many years what starts as a duty becomes something more. She was principled and honorable, and she was a great friend."

Perception DC15: Highlight to display spoiler: {His eyes are starting to well up. He cared either deeply for his duty or for Terza}

"We left Gullport in quite a hurry as you can imagine. We had a few miles behind us, and Terza turned in for the night. Being a Shipping Guild vessel there was no need for us to stay in her quarters with her. Standard practise though had us in the adjoining room. At sunrise when Terza didn't show for breakfast we went in search of her. Her quarters were locked however and when we broke in she could not be found. I couldn't see any signs of forced entry, and no signs of a struggle. She just vanished!"

Lew looks up and adds "The Shipping Guild have officially listed Terza as deceased. It is beyond unusual to register someone as deceased when there is no corpse to confirm it. For someone in Terza's station, some sort of inquest or discovery should have been conducted. The whole situation reeks."

Karin nods along before continuing "Yes. And now this is where things get complicated. Terza was the Shipping Guild emmisary for this area of the southern oceans and the Guild could not leave that position open for long, so have already appointed a successor: Elstred Gorstrom. He's an ambitious man who is rising quickly through the ranks of the Shipping Guild."

"Rumours are he has done so through questionable means. On the streets they nicknamed him 'Mithril'. Hard and good looking, but cold and nothing sticks to him" Lew practically spits out the words.

Jozhur and Terser can't quite get a fix on these two guys. They may be telling the truth, embelishing it, or just flat out lying. Perhaps they were the ones that took care of Terza?

It is becoming apparent to Coer that Karin is the more level headed, whereas Lew speaks with passion. Neither man is acting deceitfully in his mind. They aren't taking time to fashion lies, they aren't sweating. They appear to be just unloading a story they have been aching to tell.

Karin continues "Whist Bonetown and the Shipping Guild have never seen eye-to-eye, his appointment to this region does not bode well. Terza was opposed to many of the things he stood for. But we cannot speak out now. We were the bodyguards who failed. She disappeared on our watch. It wouldn't take much for us to be made outcasts."

"Or for us to wind up having an 'accident'" Lew adds. "Elstred is a man who seeks power. Bonetown and its .. er .. inhabitants regularly disrupt Shipping Guild trade vessels. You can't deny that. He loses money, and worse it affects his reputation. Terza just left things well alone, but Elstred is different. It's possible he is here to negotiate some good terms to allow his ships safe passage through these waters, but I'd watch for the knife in my back at the same time" Lew shakes his head.

Karin finishes "So that's where we stand. If Elstred finds us, we don't know what will happen. We support Terza and her ideals, and they seem to clash with Elstred's. Once he and the guild leave here, we will be safe to leave and rejoin one of the other Guild areas. If we stay clear of him it is likely he will stay clear of us. The sooner he leaves, the sooner we can leave, and dare I say, the safer things will be here."

Lew tries to help lighten the mood "We won't be freeloaders. Though it isn't safe for us to leave the house, we will do what we can to earn our keep"

Zeoll sees this as a puzzle to solve.

"Firrst, let me seek trruth in my drreams. Maybe I can find a clue as to Terrza's trrue fate."

"Tomorrrow we should seek out this Elstrred fellow. See if his hearrt is evil. If it is, then abduct him and charrm him. Then we'll find out the trruth as to what is going on."

"Forr example, we can just Waterr Walk over to his vessel, Make a doorr with a Wood Shape spell, enterr, grab Elstrred, and deparrt with him. Cast Waterr Brreath on everrybody, Cancel the Waterr Walk, and we all sink to the bottom, wherre we use charm and bluff to get him to tell us all he knows." We'll likely be well left alone underr the waves while we chat with him."

The old liontaur grins at Aexana. "My dearr, forrgive me forr suggesting such a use forr yourr worrthy magics!"

Zeoll turns to Lew and Karin. "Tell us morre about this Elstrred Gorstrrom. What does he look like? What arre his capabilities? Which ship is his own perrsonal ship? Does he keep casterrs nearr him? Bodyguarrds? Wherre on his boat does he sleep?"

Listening to Karin and Lew's story Aexana patiently waits till they have finished. Interupting never is polite and these two seem to be loaded with passion and regret so have them take their time to tell the tale... There are however a few things that don't add up in Aex's mind.

Aex smiles as Zeoll suggest some pretty innovative and cunning use of Druidic magic. The old fella sure has nifty ideas! "Not offended at all my friend! I'd be happy to provide for this underwater party at all time!

"If I may interrupt... you seem to think Terza was murdered? But the door was apparently locked from the inside per you had to break it down... could anyone have entered through a porthole in her quarters? But as there is no body not traces of battle... and since you were sleeping next to her quarters any assassin must have been pretty quiet. Not to be inpolite but could it be that Terza knew something was about to happen with this Shipping Guild and that she chose to go in hiding untill the time was right for her to return? Perhaps she knew she was in danger...

And on another matter... what makes you think the Shipping Guild will leave Bonetown anytime soon?!?"

If it's that easy for us to enter and interrogate someone, I imagine there are people out there who are much smarter and more powerful that can do the same. It would be just as simple for a wizard to pop himself inside and back with a trussed up captain in tow. But, even if the man's heart is evil, that doesn't give us the right to scare him half to death by threat of drowning. I'm sure there are legal ways to obtain an audience with a member of the Shipping Guild.

Terser doesn't think he would be a target of the same slander that Zeoll reported as going around about the crew of the Lionfish. It can't be too common either if children are still looking up to the other crew members. He would prefer to keep his name clean if possible, as long as they can still accomplish their purpose.

Stay too long and this Elsstred fellow will find himself with his ships sunk in the harbor and himself having gained a second smile." Yel'kno theorizes as to the departure of the Shipping Guild, at least based on his own past experiences in Bonetown. "and Coer is right. we unfortunately have business to attend to in Rum.. You should travel with us until we can sort this out."

DM Rob - The new man in town
Thursday February 19th, 2015 12:45:21 AM

Aexana though has another theory about Terza's disappearance. Perhaps the woman chose to go into hiding herself? Lew opens his mouth to speak, but then just as quickly closes it. Karin is the one who speaks up "That thought hadn't occurred to either of us. My thinking is that if she was to go into hiding she would have let Lew or myself know. You can understand as bodyguards to an emissary we are privy to many secrets, and keeping them is part of the job. We look to put ourselves in harms way to protect her. If there was anyone she could trust it would have been us. No, she would have told me is she was going anywhere"

Zeoll quickly comes up with a way to theoretically apprehend the Shipping Guild emissary and interrogate him. It involves no less than 6 spells that he quickly lists (Some sort of divination, Detect Evil, Water Walk, Wood Shape, Water Breathing, and some sort of enchantment). Of course, what if they manage to board the ship and find he is not evil after all? I'm sure the Shipping Guild would happily let the party go. And what if he is not aboard the ship at all?

Zeoll asks a few more questions about the man, to which Karin is able to respond "Appearance? I don't know, middle aged guy. Shoulder length dark hair. And you can just tell he comes from money.

His ship is the 'Ariel'. It's the largest galley out in the harbor at the moment. Easily over a hundred sailors aboard, including all manner of spell casters and personal guard. Probably similar on each of the other warships. He's brought an army with him. I don't think even you could just walk in and walk out

Capabilities? Well, he's a diplomat. Very articulate. He can cast a spell or two I believe. I don't think he is much of a fighter though. And he has contacts everywhere."

Lew and Karin share the various rumours they have heard about the man:
- Many Shipping Guild contracts allow for spoilage of goods during transport. It's said that Elstred ensures that any goods he oversees always lose exactly the specified allowance. Not in spoilage. He helps himself to the goods he transports and sells them himself.
- Whereas others in the Shipping Guild try to work within the laws of each land, its said Elstred doesn't share the same moral compass. Illicit goods - taurish wine, poisons, even slaves - are whispered to be transported via ships under his command. For the right price, of course.
- The Temple of Pantheon uncharacteristically turn a blind eye to Elstred. It is rumoured that the man has either blackmailed a number of Justices, or more likely, found ways to "get" to them (threats to their families, their followers, their lands, etc).
- Elstred does not have any family connections with the Shipping Guild, which is unusual for any higher ranking officials. He is periodically assessed/reviewed by the Guild, however to date they have never been able to gather any firm evidence of wrong-doing on his part. Perhaps coincidentally his family has money. LOTS of money.

"Of course, these are just rumours" Karin ends "How much stock can you place in a rumour?"

Terser doesn't agree with the approach. Surely a more legal way of resolving this matter is in order. Last thing the party need is to draw the wrath of the Shipping Guild against Bonetown. An unwarranted attack on a Shipping Guild emissary would not go unnoticed.

Yel'kno ventures a guess that the Shipping Guild won't be very welcome in Bonetown, and that if they try anything they will find themselves walking the bottom of the harbor.

Magana reminds the group of their duty to venture to Rum. This looks to adjust some of the plans. Coer and Yel'kno offer passage on the Lionfish to Lew and Karin. Both look hopeful at the prospect. "Rum would provide more than enough opportunities for us to find passage away from these seas."

Are there any more questions for Lew and Karin? Has Zeoll shared what he learned/heard in the taverns with the rest of the party? Has everyone finished their catacombs shopping and updated their character sheets and headers?

Jozhur is also in favor of a more subtle approach than kidnapping this Elstred fellow. "We should probably be as discreet as possible. We already aren't in the Harbormaster's good graces, he isn't as likely to turn a blind eye to us if we are caught."

Besides, he's already quite experienced at protecting gnomes.

Regardless, their errand in Rum is calling, and maybe between the information there, Zeoll's dreams, and maybe some purchased divinations, they can find out where Terza has gotten herself to.

Zeoll shares the rumours he heard about town.

Magana enquires as to whether the Lew or Karin have heard of this man with a scorpion tattoo. Zeoll asks if they have heard the rumours themselves or know how they started. Both men shrug. "We haven't left the building since we got here a week ago, and even then, this was the place we sought. We didn't hang around"

Knowledge Religion DC10: Highlight to display spoiler: {The scorpion - much like the spider and snake - are known symbols of Jancassis's followers. And doesn't one particular group of her followers specialise in rumours?}

Zeoll declares the Harbormaster to be the closest thing to actual authority here. And though Jozhur doesn't have any knowledge of this scorpion-tattoo man, he does know a thing or two about how Bonetown works.

The Harbormaster is the muscle of Bonetown. The 'guards' are his men and he ensures the docks are kept safe. However, the other half of the so-called government is comprised of the Captains' Council, a motley group of pirate captains. If you're a ship captain, and you've paid your Harbor fees, you're a member! There is a quorum group of seven retired pirate captains that are available to meet when there is an emergency, but usually, when a meeting is needed, a captain calls it by raising the "Captain's Jolly Roger" at the Harbormaster office and the meeting will occur at midnight in The Nine Fingers Tavern (because its the biggest). Usually, the council is convened to settle a grievance between captains or factions. However, they will also meet if there is a tangible threat to the town that is not being handled by normal means - which means someone gets irked by the threat enough to round up some brutes to take care of it.

Aex and Terser each suppose that since the young children hadn't mentioned them that perhaps they are not as renowned. Is it a gamble they are willing to take based on a children's game?

Coer and Jozhur reminisce about times gone by when they were arrested by the Harbormaster for disobeying his curfew. And Zeoll wonders why the party aren't well received here :)

Yel'kno suggests that the guests should be shown to the ship as soon as possible. It sounds like these is debate as to whether this should occur immediately or in the morning.

Those discussions will have to wait as a loud thunk comes from the wooden wall, as if someone has just thrown a rock at it.

From outside the house comes a call in a mans voice "Come on out ye, dogs! We know you found Annoirs treasure!" There are angry cheers. Sounds like a small mob has formed. "Come out or we burn you down along with yer place!"

Zeoll is the first to exit the building, and hears a rock bounce off his shield as soon as he hits daylight (Readied action to throw a rock at the first person to appear. Hit AC17=Miss!).

Outside is an assortment of ten men. One is holding Brother Lansel firmly by the shoulders. The priest looks to be trembling a bit. They are not close enough for Zeoll to simply reach out and 'touch'. Doing so could be seen as provacative, could see them make an AoO, or could see them hurt Brother Lansel.

Magana is begging for a fight. She taunts the men and can feel her flail practically begging to be released.

One of the men in the back of the group pounces on her words. He speaks in a loud grandiose fashion to the men "'Every building and ship is equally vulnerable'? Do you hear, brothers? We come here for justice and they threaten the entire town! Your wives, your mothers, your children are not safe while they still live here. How long can we ignore the threat?"

Terser stands by Magana's side. The two make quite an intimidating force, however the smalll mob do not look deterred.

Jozhur tries a different approach, and seeks to make peace by calmly and rationally explaining what happened to Annoir. Well, at least a version of events that won't see the group hung.

One of the other men in the back of the group - with slicked back black hair and a black shirt tucked into his brown breeches - seizes on Jozhur's words "There! Did you all not hear it! Straight from his mouth to your ears! They FOUND Annoir's treasure! And rather than share it they watched him be executed so they could have it all to themselves!

Yel'kno tries to salvage the situation. "What my friend Jozhur says is true..." he begins, before his voice is drowned out by the booming voice of the other man.

"You hear! It's true! They admit it! Well I say no more! It is time to get our share, brothers!" The man starts pumping his fist in the air while loudly chanting "Get our share! Get our share!". The other outspoken man joins in with equal gusto, and soon all of the other men have joined in.

Coer slowly makes his way over to see what the fuss is. They've only just gotten here and already people are looking for blood.

Aexana stays comfortably in the back. She smiles as she realises the distinct lack of diplomacy displayed by much of the group. It's little wonder they aren't the most popular pirates here.

The chant grows louder until the men can take it no longer. "ATTACK!" screams the man with the slicked back hair. He points his finger towards a patch of dirt at Magana's feet. And then, the world goes quiet.

Terser doesn't know anything about this treasure, but these people certainly don't deserve a share of it, and they certainly don't have any call to brandish their steel at his friends. Seeing how mobile these people are, he deems it wise to slow them down. He launches a bag of goop at the nearest one, then moves to confront the ring leaders, making sure he can hear the commotion again before yelling at the top of his lungs at them.

Move to AE24 and draw Tanglefoot Bag

Aex realises someone has incapacitated all speaking which means there's no casting of spells with verbal components either!!

Rather than pushing through the door Aex rushes upstairs towards the windows looking out on the street. She won't have time to act anymore but once upstairs she softly test if she can talk and hear herself again... (running quad speed double move)

The sheer gall of these men enrages Magana and she takes the battle directly to the instigators at the back.

Zeoll gathers his senses, and realises that Brother Lansel has already made a run for it (See previous DM post: "The priest makes a run for it, heading south towards the town and away from this commotion."). He doesn't think anyone else is nearby stalking invisibly. He commands one of the men to flee, but they look to have ignored his request (Will save vs DC20: 27=Pass!). Zeoll goes invisible and steps closer to the men. They all have pouches so it is difficult to tell what is a spell component pouch and what is not. The two at the rear are clearly magic users.

Terser tries to intimidate the leaders, but alas, to no effect. Their courage has been bolstered. He launches a tanglefoot bag with great accuracy as he steps forward. The sticky goo coats the man wearing the black bandana, however does not stick him to the ground (Ref Save vs DC15: 15=Pass. Rolled 14 but forgot something giving him an extra +1)

Terser - Sense Motive check. If less than 24 Highlight to display spoiler: {The leaders of this group are very convincing. So much so that you believe there is some truth to what they are saying about the Lionfish crew having done the deeds they speak of. It was certainly before you joined them. Could it actually be true?}

Throwing caution to the wind, Magana charges forward! BATTLE!!! The rogues wait until Magana is between them, and thus, both flank her for their AoOs. But wait, she is a barbarian with improved uncanny dodge. Their mistake! (Hit AC29 & 23 for 7pts and 6pts respectively. Magana takes 13pts damage! Rolled with +15 but should have been only +13 and no Sneak attack either thanks to Maganas Improved Uncanny Dodge). She smacks one of the chanting men with her flail with conviction.

Coer steps up introduces one of the men to his fist with an almighty blow! The mans clean white shirt is instantly bloodied.

Jozhur decides now is the time to back off. He retreats inside the building to regroup. (If your AC is 21, then yes, you can ignore the hit from the last round that hit AC20)

Aexana too makes herself scarce. She starts the dash inside and up the stairs (Note you can only use the run action for straight lines. You'll have to settle for double-moves to navigate the doorways, walls, stairs, etc. After this double move you are halfway up the stairs, with the top of the stairs to the south)

Yel'kno is displeased, and beckons his sword to be merciful to his foes. He steps up to two of the attackers.

The enemy act...

R9 (slicked back black hair and a black shirt tucked into his brown breeches ) casts a spell at Magana. For those in earshot it creates a tremendous BANG. (Magana takes 8pts damage and must make a Fort Save vs DC16 or be stunned for 1 round!)
Spellcraft DC17 Highlight to display spoiler: {Sound Burst}

R0 (clean shaven man. Blue shirt tucked in to brown breeches. Very shiny black boots) also casts a spell at Magana. (Magana takes 1pts damage and must make a Fort Save vs DC16 or be stunned for 1 round!)
Spellcraft DC17 Highlight to display spoiler: {Sound Burst}

Both men then take a step away from the tauress, but continue their chants "Get our share! Get our share!".

R1 steps inside the house and attacks with a shortsword. Unfortunately the balding mans swing connects with the doorframe and he is unable to follow through at Jozhur's head (Hit AC14. Nat1=Miss!)

R2 - a man with spikey blonde hair - sees Magana go for the apparent leaders. He springs into action! He moves up to Magana, attacks, and moves away. In his haste however, he misses his target. (Hit AC17=Miss!)

R3 - a man with apparently good hearing - notices Zeoll's sudden absence. He has a sneaking suspicion where Zeoll may be hiding and makes his attack. (Spring attack to move, hit, move. Perc check=32. Hit AC25+2 Flanking with R1=27. Miss chance D100=87=Hit! Zeoll takes 10pts damage + 13pts sneak attack damage + 4pts Bleed damage!). Surely R3 is the rogue of rogues!

R4 and R5 take more traditional approaches to combat. They simply step up behind Magana and try to pummel her into submission. Probably a tactic they have used many times before, but how many times on a tuar one wonders? (R4 Hit AC25 & AC14. R5 Hit AC29 & AC11. Magana takes 9pts and 10pts damage respectively). Magana's immunity to rogue flanking attacks look to save her a great deal of pain.

R6 - the gooey mess - slowly steps up to strike back at Terser. Only one blow connects. (Hit AC24 & AC16. Terser takes 8 pts damage!)

R7 and R8 both step up to attack Yel'kno from both sides. They are able to time their attacks almost to perfection. (R7 Hit AC27 & AC16. R8 Hit AC27 & AC27. Yel'kno takes 10pts damage + 9pts sneak + 4pts bleed + 8pts damage + 18pts sneak + 4pts bleed + 6pts damage. Total: Yel'kno takes 51pts damage and 8 bleed!) Medic! The lesson here looks to be don't get flanked by two rogues with sneak attack damage.

ooc: R9 and R0 are within Magana's reach... she should get an Attack of Opportunity on one I believe?

AoO on R9 hits a 33 (CRIT! backed up with a 28) for 17x2 =34 dmg!

... so R9 does not get his spell off, right?

full post later once this is answered.

DM Rob: Hmmm.... My understanding was that every 2nd diagonal counted at 10ft, hence each of these attackers would be 15ft away from Magana and outside her reach. I've since looked into it and found this text: "As an exception to the way that diagonals normally work, a creature with 10 feet of reach threatens the second diagonal. These changes will be reflected in the next errata." So the author intention is that they should be in reach. That said, had your DM been aware of this fine print I may have moved the attackers differently. Still, my mistake. You may make your AoO

Zeoll is too close to death, and he fears facing Lord Gargul when the party still owes the god a favor from last time! So he cures himself. He is invisible, so he does not need to cast on the defensive; when you have total concealment, you do not provoke AoOs. He swaps out a Cure Moderate Wounds over a Calm Emotions, and cures a total of 2d8+6=15 points of healing.

[OOC: Header reflects being wounded for 10 damage -- but NOT sneak attacked -- last round, plus the 15 healing from his spell.]

Then he renews his invisibility, which is such an important defense for him!

Finally, he takes a five foot step to Y-Z-22-23.

Also, Zeoll's stealth check to avoid being heard as he moves is a base 20-4=1d20+16 = 32.

Also, Spellcraft checks for those spells: gets the second one.

Finally, a Perception check for anything weird going on that Zeoll might sense: 35.

Jozhur tries to tumble through the space threatened by his attacker, and is lucky to escape another blow for his trouble. The attacker takes advantage of the opportunity however he once again strikes the doorframe rather than Jozhur! (Jozhur's acrobatics check of 17 fails to beat the attackers CMD. AoO hit AC14 - Another Nat1 against Jozhur! The DM dice are in his favour).

Now in a better position, Jozhur tries to repay the rogue in kind. Unfortunately however the target is quick on his feet and deftly dodges both of Jozhur's blows! (The rogue has Improved Uncanny Dodge - must like Jozhur - and cannot be flanked. With no flanking bonus, the attack on R1 I believe is a miss)

Magana takes a swing at one of the casters, but her flail flails and she misses (Nat1=Miss). Has she been stunned by her attackers? Time will tell...

Aexana is finally able to call upon some druidic power and transform into an Air elemental! She is able to fly all the way to the window (and beyond if she chooses)

Yel'kno quickly places his hands over his bloody wounds to stop the bleeding. And fortunately it starts to work.

Zeoll too patches up some wounds, whilst maintaining his invisibility. He then tries to quietly move away.

Terser grows suspicious of the Lionfish crew. These attackers are very convincing and truth be told he hasn't known the party all that long. If only Sam was here. He'd know what to do! No time for that now though, there are people to attack!

The magical blasts seem to disperse a few inches from her body, and she is glad of her new amulet.

She grins in anticipation at the man with the slicked black hair (R9), as she winds up her flail again.

Once Aex-Air reaches the window she's mortified to see what has transpired in the meantime on ground level!! Yel'kno is down... Magana finds herself surrounded also! Back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Magana shrugs off the sonic attacks with ease. She retaliates with a flurry of flail and horn, however all somehow miss their mark!

Aexana uses the rest of her action for this round to fly closer to the window (Sorry, you used your standard action for the round. Also, per my email - please list the spell you intend to cast. Also, note that the enemies you have selected are not "all within 30ft". For instance, R9 and R8 were 65ft apart.)

Coer beats the stuffing out of one of the rogues before turning his attention on another.

Terser decides to take the combat to the other side of the field. He turns his back on the gooey rogue in front of him and receives a blow to his back for his trobles (AoO Hit AC32 - Crit confirmed on 25. I should have included the -2 on the die rolls for being gooed, but the crit would still have been confirmed. 25% chance of no crit: d100=27=Crit hits. Terser takes 14pts damage!). The dwarf is able to bring some pain to another attacker though.

Yel'kno tries to attack the rogue still standing in front of him, however the loss of blood is affecting his ability to swing his sword properly.

The enemy act...

R0 and R9 stop their chanting, look to each other and nod. Each casts a spell on the defensive, and then disappears from sight! (Concentration checks to cast defensively: 31 & 22 = Pass)

R2 spring attacks Terser, catching him offguard (Hit AC28. Terser takes 23pts damage + 4 pts bleed damage!)

R3 then follows up, also attacking Terser but missing (Hit AC19=Miss!)

R4 stabs at Magana, but misses. He then slowly backs away (Hit AC15 & 15. Both miss!)

R5 manages to strike a decent blow to Magana, before likewise backing away from the taur (Hit AC31, crit confirmed on 31. Miss Ac15. Magana takes 14pts damage!)

R6 ("Mr Goo") also delivers a spring attack against Magana (Hit AC26. Magana takes 9pts damage!)

Zeoll inhales deeply [free action] -- he wants to know the scents of these ruffians, in case any sneak close, or if he wants to track them down.

He casts a Hold Person spell on R4. The Will save DC is 21.

Then he reactivates his fey invisibility.

Finally, he takes a step forward, to 23-24-AA-AB. Stealth 17.

DM RobC Sorry mate! Forgot you had that too. Yep, ignore the sneak attack and bleed

Yel'kno rejects being called monsters. He holds a hand to his stomach to swiftly mend some of his wounds, before using the flat of his sword blade to deal some non-lethal damage to the teary rogue.

Zeoll does his best to remember the smells of this battle. A mixture of blood, sweat, and yes - even tears. He tries to cast an enchant one of the rogues however his words fall on deaf ears (Will Save vs DC21: 24 = Pass!). Zeoll reactivates his invisibility and stealthily keeps moving.

Terser gives his opponents one final chance to accept defeat and lay down their weapons.

Coer boosts his own defence and punches the air in front of his attacker, practically taunting the man.

R7 - "Mr Teary" - drops his sword to ground and withdraws to the east. He isn't looking back, and leaves a small blood trail that could easily be followed (Coer - with your reach you may choose to make an AoO against this withdrawing guy).

Aexana uses her newfound talent with lightning to send three bolts down at R2, R3 and R4 (OOC: Rules discussion on the rule board looks unanimous in how the range works. Ref saves: 26, 18 & 20. With Evasion, R2 and R4 are unharmed. R3 takes full damage of 12pts).

Jozhur finally finds a way to penetrate his attackers defences and pierces with his short sword!

Magana is not at all happy that the two casters have disappeared from sight. She can't even hear where they might be. They may be using stealth while invisible. She unleashes her fury on one of the rogues within reach and with great effect. (No AoO against R5. He used a full attack action - only 1 of his 2 attacks got past your defence - followed by a 5ft step away. R6 "Mr Goo" did the spring attack)

The battle is most certainly now going the party way...

Magana can hear some soft speaking of two voices to the south of her, but she can't pinpoint where the invisible men may be.

R1 tries to finish off Jozhur, but his recent beating dulls his senses (Hit AC20 and AC18 - Both miss!)

R2 tries to spring attack Terser, but also misses! (Hit AC20 - Miss!)

R3 manages to hurt Terser a little (Hit AC29. Terser takes 6pts damage) before somersaulting away (Acrobatics check: 26 to tumble away beats Terser's CMD of 24).

R4 goes total defence and takes another step back from Magana, placing him up against the invisible Zeoll! This poor rogue is also making the unfortunate mistake of getting closer to Terser. (Total defence and a 5ft step)

R5 does the same, putting up his defences and backing away from Magana. (Total defence and a 5ft step)

R6 isn't having any of this! Mr Goo spring attacks Magana, managing to nick the taurs bicep (Hit AC22. Magana takes 8pts damage!). Unfortunately his slow speed means he is not able to get as far away from Magana as he would like, and ends his turn closer to her than he would have liked.

A good round for the party, perhaps? Rogues 1, 3 and 5 are looking unsteady on their feet. Rogue 4 is pristine.

Invisible Zeoll takes a good whiff of R4 and Commands him to "FLEE!" That's an extended command, total duration 2 rounds. So 2 rounds fleeing means we likely won't see him back for four rounds, if ever. The will save DC is a 20

Then Zeoll reactivates his invisibility and moves to Z-AA-23-24. Stealth 23.

If the spell works and R4 runs off, likely he'll provoke an AoO. If so, Zeoll's AoO with a paw hits AC11.

=============================

Zeoll is first to act, and commands the unhurt attacker to flee! Yet again, they prove resistant to his mind control techniques (Will save vs DC20: 26. Nat 20! Sorry Zeoll. One day your commands will work!) He reactivates his invisibility and quietly steps aside.

Yel'kno lets the fleeing rogue go. The man no doubt learnt his lesson. He quickly patches another wound, before moving south and dealing some non-lethal damage with a well aimed strike.

Magana moves closer to the same target, pursuing him no matter the cost. Even at total defence, the man cannot protect himself from Magana's sharp horns.

Jozhur has finally found his rhythm for the battle, and easily penetrates his targets defences.

Terser makes sure the man goes down - and stays down. He strikes a vital point on the rogue who drops to the ground, dead.

Aex sees no need to engage in any further combat, and uses the pwoer of healing to treat some of Magana's more serious wounds.

Coer marches across the battlefield and punches one of the rogues squarely in the face. (Fort save vs DC16: 9=Fail! R3 is stunned!)

The enemy act...

The invisible chants finish, and two swarms of spiders suddenly appear around Coer!

The first swarm slowly moves south, seemingly sensing some tender linotaur flesh (5ft step south avoids AoO from Coer and Terser. Moving in Zeoll's square provokes an AoO. Zeoll has elected not to take any. They have tremorsense and as a swarm don't make an attack roll or have a miss chance. Zeoll takes 5pts damage, and must make a Fort save vs DC11 or take 1pt Str damage. Occupying the same square as a swarm requires a caster level check of DC 20 + spell level).

The second swarm slowly moves to Coer! (5ft step south avoids AoO from Terser and Zeoll. Moving in Coer's square provokes an AoO. Coer can make an AoO vs AC17. If he doesn't swat the swarm, Coer takes 4pts damage, and must make a Fort save vs DC11 or take 1pt Str damage).

Rogue 2 spring attacks Coer and barely misses, thanks to the monk's good use of ki (Hit AC20=Miss!)

Rogue 3 - an older rogue with a noticeable scar down his cheek - can see the way this battle has turned. He drops his sword to the ground and turns to run (Withdraw action. No AoO) He makes it about 120ft west.

Rogue 4 finds himself uncomfortably close to the action. Nevertheless, he steps up to Coer and does his best to do some damage (Hit AC14 & 19 - both miss!)

Rogue 5 looks Yel'kno clear in the eye. The man is scared. He drops his sword to the ground and tries to make a break for it. (Withdraw action to head east. No AoO from Magana however Yel'kno may make one. The rogue has Mobility, so Yel'kno would have to hit AC24). Assuming he lives, he makes it about 120ft east.

Rogue 6 is still a bit sticky, and finds himself almost toe-to-toe with Magana. He throws caution to the wind, and feels his sword bounce off her tough hide (Hit AC17 & 11 - both miss!)

To the north east, Magana, Aexana and Yel'kno can see a faintly glowing, vaguely humanoid shape move into view from the north. ("H" on the map at AM18)

The sound of someone talking still comes from the south.

Magana is first to act. She turns on her heels as Yel'kno approaches. The two of them flank the sticky rogue and together introduce him to a world of pain.

Aexana brings the thunder and lighting. Rogue 2 is a little lighter on his feet than Rogue 4, who takes the full brunt of it (Ref save vs DC20: 24 & 18). From her new position she can hear someone talking to the west of her, but is unable to pinpoint an exact location.

Jozhur looks about for Rogue 1 and finds the man sliced in two by Terser's glaive. He tumbles out the doorway and ends up flanking one of the other rogues.

Coer and Terser make very short work of the spider swarm. They disappear as quickly as they came.

Coer tries to wipe the spider carcass on the rogue in front of him, but to no avail. The rogue is just a little to light on his feet.

Zeoll is last to act. He moves away from rogue 4 drawing an AoO (Hit AC28. Zeoll takes 8pts damage. *See note below too please). He can hear one of the casters somewhere in the southwest, but the other is quiet.

Swarm 1 is the first to act, and determines since that tasty linotaur is gone that the next nicest thing to eat would be human flesh. (D100=13! It ignores Coer and attacks the rogue instead!) The rogue manages to get a few blows in, but the swarm draw blood (Swarm does 4pts damage to R4)

The chanting finished and another swarm appears! This one makes a move for Coer! (D100=44. Coer may make an AoO vs AC17. If he doesn't swat the swarm, Coer takes 4pts damage, and must make a Fort save vs DC11 or take 2pt Strs damage).

Rogue 4 steps away from the swarm, and does his best to strike at Jozhur, but fails (Hit AC15 & 14. Both miss)

Rogue 6 drops his weapon to the ground and turns tail to flee (Magana and Yel'kno may each make an AoO vs AC24)

The glowing humanoid form silently hovers towards the front of the building.

There is no noise now from the two invisible men. No chanting, no casting, no talking. All is quiet.

Neither Magana nor Yel'kno are in the mood to allow someone to escape from this battle. They each strike at the retreating rogue, yet miss (OOC: Per previous DM post, the rogues have "Mobility" which increases their AC vs AoOs as a result of movement)

Magana then charges head first towards the glowing humanoid form. Could it be an angel here to help the group? Forget asking questions, just kill it! Magana's horns pierce the light quite easily. If she hurt the form, she cannot tell. It still hovers there. Silent and glowing.

Aexana is unable to pinpoint the location of the invisible casters now they have stopped their speaking. They are being quite stealthy. She calls down two lightning bolts on R2 and R4 respectively, however, both look to miss their mark (Ref Save vs DC20: 26 and 22. Evasion means no damage).

Zeoll strides westward and sends one of the rogues into fits of uncontrollable laughter (Will Save vs DC21: 16=Fail). The rogue drops to the ground, clutching his sides as if he has heard the joke about the linotaur and the leprechaun for the first time.

Zeoll is unable to pinpoint the exact location of the now silent casters, but he does notice the face of Brother Engev peeking from the upstairs window. The priest looks to be crouched and only showing as much of himself as he has to in order to get a good look at what is going on.

Coer tries to slap some sense into one of the rogues, and does so with some success. He has no idea what that glowing form is yet. It hasn't made its intentions clear, other than to hover closer to the melee.

Terser is content to let those who wish to flee do so. He has some concerns on what this glowing form may be, but doesn't let it show. Instead he opts to heal those he can.

The enemy act...

The remaining swarm vanishes as quickly as it arrived.

Rogue 2 is laughing uncontrollably on the ground. Thankfully it is not overly infectious.

Rogue 4 has taken quite a beating. He takes a few swings at Coer and manages to land one blow (Miss AC16. Hit AC23. Coer takes 6pts damage). The rogue obviously realises the futility of the situation however. He drops his weapon to the ground and puts his hands up in a sign of his surrender.

All goes quiet - save for the laughter - before one of the invisible attackers makes himself known.

"Coward!" the invisible rogue with the slicked black hair (R9) appears behind Rogue 4, and stabs him in the back (Hit AC21 for 6pts). It's enough to drop rogue 4 to the ground unconscious.

R0 appears just as suddenly behind Yel'kno, but rather than attack the paladin outright, he attacks Yel'kno's rapier! (Sunder maneuver with Improved Sunder does not provoke AoO. Not sure about making a CMB with surprise, but hits CMB:28. Yel'knod rapier takes 5pts damage!)

Yel'kno and Zeoll recognise the daggers used by these two as being made of adamantine.

Knowl Arcana DC20 Highlight to display spoiler: {Dancing lights can indeed create "one faintly glowing, vaguely humanoid shape", such as this. Likely a diversion from one of the casters to split the party}

The taur then prepares to throw a tanglefoot bag, aided by some True Strike magic.

Magana gives up on the apparition. She's tried attacking it, and really, what else is there than that? She thunders across the battlefield and clobbers R9 with her flail. The man drops to the ground an unmoving, bloody mess.

Terser finishes tying up the laughing rogue and moves on to do the same to the unconscious ones as well.

Hey now, calm down everyone. We've subdued the ringleaders and killed several men already. I don't know what this treasure they were talking about is, and I doubt they deserve a share, but we should get whatever passes for the law in this town before the situation gets any more out of hand. If we hunt down these men in their homes, we could have the entire city take up arms against us. We should question these men, then either release them to the authorities or to their families.

And before I'll go anywhere else with you, I need an explanation of why these men were so easily convinced that they were justified in attacking you.

"And as forr those rrogues, they attacked us because they could, and because they thought they would win. That's all the authorrity therre is herre. If we do not like it, we have to go find them and punish them ourrselves. That's a good idea, because then the worrd gets around and the next villain thinks twice beforre taking us on."

"Maybe someday -- maybe someday soon -- we can change that. But until then, the best way we can prrotect the brrotherrs herre when we arre gone is to make surre it is clearr therre arre rramifications if you trry something."

Zeoll also explains some back story: Annoir was a pirate captain, known for press-ganging crew. He was a slick character, and he tricked the party somehow for a while (Zeoll is hazy on that), but eventually we realized he was a villain indeed. We tracked him to Centaur Island, captured him, proved to the Centaurs that he was breaking Centaur law, and the Chief Stallion had him executed. Sure we got some gear off him -- the Stallion gave it to us as a reward. But no one here is entitled to any of that.

These rogues are either lying or tricked about it. Either way, attacking without provocation shows they are bad. Zeoll calls for Yel'kno to detect evil -- he's a paladin, right?

And now you heard what they said, apparently someone is spreading rumors that we have his treasure and possibly set him free."

"We did take what was on his person, but we never found his ship."

With that said, he gets back to the issue at hand, "Where are Lansel and Engev? One of them took off running, should probably make sure he is safe. If they can't or don't want to babysit."

Jozhur begins searching the enemies, starting with the live ones. He takes any weapons from them and keeps an eye out for any other objects of interest.

DM Rob - Aftermath

Zeoll calls everyone in close and channels some healing energy to all - even the enemies. All 3 enemy rogues regain consciousness.

Zeoll is easily able to find two fresh trails - one heading east and one heading west. The scents may be difficult to follow (the overpowering smell of fish is very prominent in the harbor town) but combined with the blood trail it becomes quite easy. But which does he choose to follow? They are equally fresh having been made no more than 10 seconds apart.

He starts to quickly fashion a plan whereby some will remain behind to secure the prisoners, and then catch up? The question remains though, who will be looking after the prisoners while they are secured?

Magana is ready to continue the battle, and beckons Zeoll to begin the tracking.

Jozhur takes an interesting approach. When one of the rogues comes to. He clubs the man in the face. (Zeoll healed for 13, Jozhur damaged for but 4). The rogue gets a bloodied lip for daring to gain consciousness. He glares daggers at Jozhur, and spits a gob of blood his way. Obviously the intention was to subdue the man, but given he was surrounded and there were other means to keep him subdued, was a punch to the face necessary?

Jozhur makes the suggestion that at least two of the group should stay behind and guard the captives, just in case they try to escape or someone comes for them.

Terser calls for calm. What exactly is going on - and why - isn't clear to him. He demands an explanation and suggest releasing them to the authorities or their families.

Zeoll does his best to explain the politics of Bonetown, whilst Jozhur gives an account of the party dealings with Annoir.

After a cursory search of the equipment, Jozhur is able to lay the following items out:
2 x Adamantine Daggers
8 x MW Shortswords
3 x potions
Around 50gp in various coins

Coer vows that the group will do their best in the name of justice. What exactly is meant by this is unclear though. What IS justice to the party? An eye for an eye?

Magana is sure the Brother can keep an eye on the prisoners, whilst Yel'kno has concerns about the two men seeking refuge in their house.

Brother Engev stands in the doorway, arms folded "No. Absolutely not. I will not act as a jailer. Brother Lansel and I created Portside House to be a beacon in Bonetown. A way to lead by example and show that justice can be afforded to all. I do not seek to turn a blind eye to misgivings, but I do not seek to condemn without a fair trial either. If these men wish to stay here of their free will and discuss their behaviour, then I will act as private counsel for them." The priest of Pantheon is devout in his beliefs. Those who have lived in Portside House may recall seeing a plaque in Lansel's room which reads: "Justice is not a prize tendered to the good-natured, nor is it to be withheld from the ill-bred"

Assuming the captives are tied and escorted inside, the party find Lew and Karin both armed with swords and standing inside, by either side of the main doorway. "We dare not show our faces in the town, but the brigands will have to walk over our dead bodies before they do harm to your friends" Lew practically swears "You can leave your captives here. We can ensure they get up to no harm"

Sense Motive DC20 Highlight to display spoiler: {Based on their histories, and the conversations you have had with them, you get the sense that both Lew and Karin are honourable men. Being former bodyguards, there may be no better pair to look after Brother Engev and the prisoners}

I still feel like enough is enough. We have the ringleaders - if anyone will face trial, it will be them. Then we can give them justice in accordance with what law we would have in this town. If we expect this town to submit to law at any time, then we must act like it at all times, not when we feel like it or after we have run down these men. They will learn from these prisoners, knowing that any justice we mete out will apply to them if they ever threaten us again. It is tough, fair, and appropriate.

Terser never really doubted his comrades, but it is good to hear from their own mouths what happened with Annoir. FYI - Terser spent the last couple of rounds tying people up with his rope, so they should be secured by now.

We should form some sort of Tribunal to decide what justice to give these men. One of the Brothers, perhaps, one from our crew: Yel'kno is certainly above reproach, and there must be at least one honourable sort of man in Bonetown to round it out.

Aex tends to agree with Terser... Even though the hunt might sound interesting the little druid wonders what good will come from it. Won't it just draw more anger towards them? Wouldn't it be possible to clear their name by speaking with the prisoners and perhaps find explantions in things other than battle?

She walks over to the captives and asks: "Why don't you speak up friend and I'll patch up that split lip you got... Please, who speaks wrong of the Lionfish and its Crew? "

Zeoll assures Engev that a fair trial will be held once the group return.

Magana just shakes her head and laughs, before saying a prayer to Garugl. Brother Engev sighs and patiently asks "You do not think justice can exist in Bonetown? Do you think it foolish to try? Does your Lord Gargul nonchalantly condemn all to the Estates of Unrest, or does he fairly judge people based on their lives to determine their eternity? It is my belief that much like a drop of water in a still pool, justice can spread like a ripple through Bonetown. We just need to to be strong enough to try"

Coer is happy to go with Magana and Zeoll on their hunt. Is it vengeance or justice that all the taurs seek?

The three taurs follow the trail to the west. The blood trail doesn't go in a straight line. It winds and weaves along the streets.

Ahead, a group of men stand directly over the trail of blood kicking dirt around and doing a fairly good job of messing things up. They're having a laugh as they do so, and the approach of the party only draws cheers from the men.

Taurs - Highlight to display spoiler: {Recall earlier that you were told the entire town view the party as unfriendly. Any chance to interfere with you is going to be taken.}

=================================

Terser, Aexana and Jozhur have a different way of thinking. Why pursue those who have fled.

Terser is content to let those who have been captured face a trial. Let justice be done, and let the word spread throughout the town. It draws a smile and a nod from Brother Engev. Terser even goes so far as to propose a kind of tribunal or court system.

Aexana and Jozhur try to diplomatically draw information from one of the rogues. Aexana's words are soft and gentle, promising to sooth some wounds. Jozhur's attempt at diplomacy is along the lines of "tell me what I want and I won't hurt you again". Perhaps they are playing good guard/bad guard?

Two of the rogues - the one with the bloodied lip, and the one with the scar down his cheek - sit quietly. They don't struggle in their bonds and mainly sit with their heads hung low.

The man with the bloodied lip - thanks to Jozhur - remains tight lipped.
Perception or Sense Motive DC20 Highlight to display spoiler: {He might not say anything aloud, however his eyes quickly dart to the man with the slicked black hair}

Scar face rogue just snaps back at Jozhur "You're hated in this city, scum! We don't need no extra incentive to come after you. Pfft. Another group will likely be along soon to gut you!"

The third rogue - the man with the slicked black hair - sits there comfortably just smiling to all present. No, not smiling. Smirking. And just to make things a little creepier ... he starts whistling a haunting tune, and ending softly singing a few lines:
"Yo, Ho haul together, hoist the colours high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars, never shall we die"

It is a song of defiance. A song sung by a man ready to face his end. An extraordinary performance that will stay with you for some time (Perform (Sing): 34!)

Terser stands by Aex ready to assist her in asking the prisoner a few questions. Aex tends to the one with the split lip, and then, using her female charms, begins to talk nicely to the man.

If no one objects, Zeoll will have the non-caster prisonput off alone in a room, blindfolded, tied up, not gagged.

Zeoll reads his Glibness scroll. He has his friends bring him into the room with the prisoner. Friends say, "You'll keep just fine in here with your friend. Now shut up, the both of you, or we'll beat you silent."

Zeoll whispers, disguising his voice by whispering and by being careful to use no words with R sounds:

"Look, I dunno who you might be, but those unmentionables have nasty ways. So keep quiet and talk low like, okay."

Zeoll spins a little tale pretending to be one of the unfriendly types on the street scuffing up the trail, and being captured and brought in.

"But I got some little magic, and I'm gonna do my best to send pals a mental message. You might feel a tickle in the head, but just don't mind it. Stick with me, and I'll get you out of this place when my pals come."

Bluff check on the whole story, with the +20 Glibness bonus: 37.

Then Zeoll casts Charm Person on him. The old liontaur has eight left to cast today, if he uses up all his first and second level sorcerer slots, and the will save DC is base 10+1 level +4 cha +1 Cradled +2 feats = 18. With his Glibness and story, he's hoping to avoid the +5 bonus to saves vs hostile casters.

With any luck, Zeoll will get the guy charmed. Then he can ask questions. He specify that Zeoll NEEDS to know this stuff so that he can convince his friends to get his good friend out safe.

Questions and general stuff: Names of all the attackers. Affiliations with groups, gangs, leaders. What he knows about the heroes, for real and for fake. How he knows it. What's going on with the shipping guild. How did they come to attack the heroes. Zeoll is going to pump him for as much as he can get.

Charm allows opposed Charisma checks to help the charmed person along ... ghere are some: 14, 6, 17, 22.

If this works, and if Zeoll has any more charms left on the day, he'll try the same routine on the other prisoner(s), only using info from the first guy to weave a more compelling story.

Aex, Terser and Magana continue to interview the man in the white shirt (who formerly had a split lip). I say interview, as it is much calmer and nicer that a formal interrogation. The man still flinches at any signs of movement, although Aex opening her tunic a little causes the man to look a little quizzical. A woman opening the top of her tunic? There truly is no end to the torture techniques of gnomes.

Magana suspects that this man may have just been a pawn. His gullibility used to draw him in to someone elses plan. Could that be true for the men who were not so lucky to survive this day? Were they too just patsies? Hopefully Gargul will judge them on their lifes deeds and not on this day.

Magana even goes so far as to suggest this man should be released. The man raises his head a little and looks almost pleadingly to her.

Aex is the first to introduce herself. As diplomatic as she is, the utterance of the name 'Ga'al' is enough for the man to turn a little pale.

"I'm Eric" he answers somewhat meekly "the one with the scar on his face in the other room is Miles. Not sure who the other guy is. We were just having a round at the Busty Mermaid - me, Miles and Tylan. That guy came in and just started talking to the room about all the things that you guys had been up to. He was just so convincing. I don't know what happened. One minute we were having a quiet drink and the next we, well, just followed every word he was saying. I just got so swept up with what he was telling me. It was honestly the first time I'd ever heard about some treasure.

I've lived in Bonetown all me life. Can't say I've ever seen him here before."

Eric leans closer to whisper to Aexana "Pretty sure I saw him talking to someone from the Shipping Guild. Couldn't tell you for sure, but I remember seeing that gold ship's wheel logo of theirs"

===========================

'Miles' is left in the other room, guarded by Lew and Karin.

===========================

Jozhur calls Yel'kno into the room and suggests someone may want to check on the Lionfish. The prisoner just keeps whistling his haunting tune and looking quite pleased with himself.

Zeoll though, has a plan to break through the mans defences. He readies his glibness spell and has the prisoner blindfolded (he is already tied to a chair). Once done, Zeoll is brought in under the ruse of being another prisoner.

A very cunning plan. Zeoll is awarded a hero point for such a novel plan!

Zeoll's voice is barely recognizable, and he whispers a few plans to the man.

It's enough for the man to miss a note in his whistling tune, but he continues on nonetheless.

When it comes time for Zeoll to cast the Charm spell, he finds the mans defences are still up, and the spell is resisted.

"Friends, tell the prisoner to shut up and then gag him. Keep him blindfolded. Declare that it is time to divide up the loot. And then ALL leave please!"

Hopefully that will get the prisoner to stop humming and get the room emptied except for him and the prisoner.

Then he can wait a minute, then whisper to the prisoner, "They left. I'm going to give my magic a chance again. Good luck to us."

Then he casts his charm(s).

Once the spell takes, if he gets one to do so, Zeoll comes closer to the prisoner.

"I got a hand out of the bindings. Let me get that gag out," he whispers.

He fumbles with the gag for a while, as if it were not easy to get it out of his mouth. After he ungags the prisoner, he goes ahead with his plan to pump him for information.
