(kick up the posting friends! A New module starts and I hope you will all be active and enthousiastic!!)


In the aftermath of the wedding Humble's Ford was a happy place for at least a couple of days. Hazel and Alouryn were seldom seen. The rest of the Humble's Sword found a place to sleep at Murphy's place. Murphy's brother Kendry and his wife Airin also stayed for another two days before going back to their burrow in Hovel.

A few more days pass. The town is still buzzing. Hazel popped in with his wife Alouryn who has asked him to first quench his thirst for adventure and then start a family of their own...

The Humble's Sword are either scattered throughout town or together should you prefer when suddenly a purple flash can be seen far in the distance!! Perhaps even close to the hills in the North! Seconds later you hear a low rumble and you sense a light tremmor in the ground...
People look surprised and worried!

These vibrations not only sound threathening but they can even be felt in every sinew of your body giving everyone a very uneasy feeling... a sense of imminent danger... a sense of a darkness beyond anything each and everyone of you have ever experienced...

A couple of minutes later flocks of birds can be seen flying away South... fast...

Shel had enjoyed the wedding as it had given her something to do. After the festivities had ceased, she was ready to turn her attention to something else. Shel was walking through town, looking for something exciting when she saw the purple flash and felt the ground beneath her rumble. "Earthquake," she screamed, as she looked for others who might have been injured if they lost their footing.

She headed immediately back to Murphy's parents to gather the others. As she did so, she saw the many birds heading south. Something's happened in the north. We heros have to go find out what happened!

She throws open the door and tells the others what she saw, assuming they were still there. If not, she heads to the town hall, knowing that her friends would collect there at the sign of trouble.

Alleah hold her arms out to maintain her balance as the ground beneath her feet moves.

"Everyone indoors now please! Just a precaution! I'm sure there's nothing to be worried about!" she calls loudly to the people in the street, but hardly believing the words she is saying (Bluff: 16)

Alleah starts a jog towards Humble's House where she expects to find the others.

As she passes the Temple of Ffloy she stops in to see the Broker "Broker Laughshield? Ian? Are you in here?" Alleah will humbly request the Broker to shelter his flock within the temple for the time being. Just until the party can determine if it is safe or not to be outside.

Murphy happened to be in a tobacco field with his Uncle Orby, learning about the fertilizer mix he has been trying to cause a slight shift in flavor of a particular strain.

So they witnessed the northern flash, and felt the earth shocks.

"Hmmm." Uncle Orby looked up. He turned in a full circle, letting his gaze scan the full horizon. He put his index finger in his mouth, then held it up for a moment. "Well, I suppose some giants might have blown up one of the towers to the north. Or not. Think I'll mosey over to my cellar, pick up a few items. You go on and tell my brother I'll be by in a bit." Orby picks up a small light green tobacco leaf, and plucks it from the stem.

Murphy hears his uncle's supposition. He moves to the hard path beside the crops and puts his ear to the ground for about a minute, just listening. Then he stands up and says, "All right, I'll let papa know. See you later, Uncle." He hustles off to the Leafwin Pipewood burrow to carry the message. [a bit more later - partial post here]

Once Murphy shows up in his family burrow, maybe three to four minutes after the northern lights, he sees Shel just coming out the door. He holds up a finger as to indicate, "Just a moment," and enters his father's crafting shop next to the burrow. Inside he tells his father what Orby had to say, asks him if he has any idea what the explosion was about, then informs him he is going to meet up with the Sword.

He enters the burrow, relays what he heard to his mother and siblings, then exits, and says, "So, Shel, let's go back to the Sword's Burrow. You want to hear what my Uncle Orby thinks? He says... oh, by the way, Shel, I forgot to tell you that the other day I tried to get hold of the Second Breakfast Club - and they seem to be gone for now. Either that, or they just were not answering their door.

"Anyway, Uncle Orby thinks... well, I'll tell you once we get to the - hey! - I'll race you to the burrow!" He starts running... not so fast that he gets much ahead of Shel, though. Is that Alleah just ahead of them?

Once there, and pausing a moment to catch his breath, he calls out - "Hey, who's home? Alouryn? Hazel? Bliss? Sardok? Hi, Alleah. Hello, Quotiln."

"So, any ideas as to what the purple light and wold trembles and fleeing birds is about? My Uncle Orby was wondering if it might have something to do with one of the warding towers against the giants. It seems the Second Dinner Club may be out of town. There likely will be many frightened people here in Humble's Ford - maybe the whole valley.

"And how do we get ready for what we don't know may be coming?"

Shel follows Murphy as they gather their collection of friends. "Does anyone have an idea where the Club could be? If they were around, I'm sure they'd have already started looking into the ruckus. Without them, I think we need to first make sure everyone in town is ok. Then we need to head out and see what safely happened. If nothing else, we might be able to figure things out and come back and reprt it."

Sardok had used a portion of the ensuing time to make sure his pony was well stocked and ready for travel at a moment's notice. As the last of the slight tremor passes, he races for his mount and leads it out. Thusly he comes across Murphy and Shel.

"Eh? What is this 'Club' of which you speak? With respect, were we to knock on every door to inquire to the health of every resident, we'd have no time to do aught else. The people here are smart and hardy, they shall abide well and see to their own affairs even without our intervention.
But that purple flash, at this distance, bespeaks of magicks of some power. And there may be people or creatures nearby that flash that are in greater need of our aid. Perhaps they are dead or dying right now, and even seconds might count. Let us mount and ride!"

"The Second Dinner Club?" Murphy replies to Sardok. "They live in that tower at the north side of town. Not that there's any other tower in town. Veseley Vortence, Tiana Taithen, and Bazeck Breezelee are mages. They try to take care of the towers to the north which help to keep giants from coming down against Crescent Valley.

"I concur it's a good idea to see what's going on. We need to get the rest of Humble's Sword together."

Bliss, with the wisdom of a longtime veteran of military campaigns gone by, is catching some shut-eye when the earthquake hits.

In his dream, Bliss is flying with his sisters above a magical forest, by the shore of a huge lake. Then the world starts to shake, and a sense of doom grows strong.

Bliss falls out of bed, casts his Reduce Person, and calls out for Mookie.

Mookie caws, "Kid! Calm down! Just a little tremor."

But there is more to is, as his friends arrive and seems set on a fast look north to the source of the disturbance.

Bliss gathers his gear, casts his longstrider, and is ready to run!

OOC: Sorry for not posting, and thank for making the weeding a great occasion.
For Hazel the weeding will be forever covered in some kind of haze and fog. He will, so his last day, only remember glipses, images and feelings.
He knows Murphy was talking to him, saying really important stuff, which was completely and utterly unable to get into his mind, nervous as he was, while he nodded incessantly, smiling idiotically.
He will will forever feel ashamed and impacted at seeing Bliss dance. He will remember his silly and clumsy attempts to imitate his moves, unsuccessfully.
He remembers Faoil leading him to the wedding, in the banks of the crescent river, making sure, with gentle bites, he didn't got lost.
He remembers trying to look away from Shel and Alleah, as beautiful as they look, not to cause Alouryn any fit of jealously.
He will remember seeing a ray of light hitting Alouryn's shoulder, making him shudder in it's beauty.
But he, in fact, don't recall saying "I do". He only know he felt like his heart was going to burst with happiness at feeling Alouryn's kiss.
He also won't remember seeing Sardok about...

The next day Hazel stays in, not getting out of his new home. Faoil will need to fend for himself on that day.

Hazel emerges from his burrow, a huge smile in his face and a happy gait in his step. He goes looking for his friends.
"More fireworks, ehh? Let's see what happened..."
He walks like in a daze, followed by Faoil, happy to see his master again.

As soon as the tremmors start an earthquake is the first thing that pops in Shel's mind. She first sees for anyone who needs help and then runs of to find her friends back at the Humble's Sword Burrow. She sees people panicking and others trying to calm their children. Everyone stares north... The dark puple clouds rise ever higher making a circular pattern on the sky.

Alleah too tries to calm everybody but she doesn't sound too convincing. As she runs to be re-united with her friends, she passes by Iangold Laughshield. The broker is visibly shaken but equally pleased with the knowledge that the Humble's Sword are compelled to finding out what's happening up North...

Murphy was working in his uncle's tobacco field when the tremmors started... His uncle isn't easily startled... He wonders if Giants have been attacking on of the Giant Towers perhaps...

Quickly running back to his parents Murphy almost runs into Shel. There's no need to go inside for both Murphy's parents are also outside gazing the Northern sky. Murphy knows his parents and when they are worried. The thought of their son running north isn't a welcommimg one. "Be careful boy..." is the last thing Murphy hears his mother say as he runs of with Shel.

Soon they are joined by Sardok. As they run, Murphy informs them of his uncle Orby's supositions. Sardok never heard of a Second Dinner's Club nor Giant Towers so Murphy talks of what he knows... The Giant Towers are the Crescent Valley's main line of defense versus raids from giants of the North. They were built by the Archmage Shafbaffum. Now it's the Second Dinner's Club, Veseley Vortence, Tiana Taithen, and Bazeck Breezelee, who are the mages in charge of maintaining the Giant Towers.

Bliss thought he was dreaming when the tremmors started. But as soon as he sees his friends set on running North he quickly follows with Mookie always on his side.

Hazel, with a huge smile on his face, thinks all this is just more fireworks untill he catches up with his friends.

By the time they are near the tower where the Second Dinner's Club resides everyone has been brought up to speed about all ideas about this phenomenon...

It's kinda weird though... Everyone is out on the streets but the Second Dinner's Club is... not...

Further North the disturbing pattern is ever present in the sky... Allready more people come running North. The mayor is one of them... Pirnook is also there! Oh... Looks like Iangold and a few disciles are also curous to learning what happenend...

Do you travel North? I need correct headers.in your posts friends. Make all checks you deem relevant. Give me an idea of travelling speed...

"Let's get our mounts, provisions - can everyone be ready in twenty minutes?" Murphy asks his friends, happy to see Sardok is ready and well - and he notes Bliss running up, pack on back. "Yes, seconds may count, and I see you are fully ready. Taking twenty to ensure the rest of us are equipped may stand us in better stead than heading out with no preparation. And I think I may need better to follow your example in the future."

He turns, sees Quotiln, waves Alleah over to their side. "Alleah, let me know if there is anything you care to add or amend, and forgive me for perhaps stepping into your place here." He faces the hobbit from Angel Springs, and says, "Please, Quotiln, run to my family burrow, ask them to saddle my three ponies. Their saddles and gear are in a shed next to my father's workshop - I think you know where. Get my brothers to help, and tell them I'll bring them something from the north if they are quick about it. That goes for you, too. One more thing - in our absence, Alouryn is mistress of the Humble's Sword burrow, so heed her words, be kind to her, and, you know Hazel - and us. Guard her safety and her honor, keep a respectful distance, and do not allow yourself to become overfamiliar. All right, off to the ponies."

Then, drawing close to others, he says, "Mister Mayor, Mister Deeppockets, Broker Laughshield. We think we should go investigate. Have you any counsel, insights, or questions before we depart? Where is Constable Ostgood? I recommend the watch and the militia begin to make defensive fortifications and pit traps to the north side of town. Some wild animals fleeing the purple explosion may come through town as they try to escape just as the birds have done - so see if you can set up quickly some carts and wagons to divert them off to one side or another. They are not likely to attack unless confronted directly... if they do come this way."

He speaks quietly to Mayor Bumbleluck. "It is only speculation at the moment, but one of the warding towers may have been breached. Some defense against biguns may be necessary. If we can intercept such before they get here, we will do what we can, if that speculation turns out to be correct. Speak with Ostgood about this. He is a level-headed hobbit, and he may have a good plan. I think the Second Dinner Club may already be ahead of us to the north, unless you know otherwise."

The druid says, "If you have anything to say, I will be back in three minutes, and you can tell me then." He dashes back to the burrow, grabs his backpack, picks up a few extra items, then heads on out.

"Hazel. Hazel." He puts his hands on his friend's shoulders. "Do you want to come? Does Alouryn want to join in with us? It's your honeymoon. If you want to stay with your wife, I understand. You could be of help here at Humble's Ford. But, if you are willing to join us, I would feel much better about our chances for success, facing whatever it is we may need to face." He waits for Hazel's response, and accepts it, whatever he may choose.

He then turns back to the governmental, business, and religious leaders. "Any thoughts before sending us away?"

"A purple sky huh? I hear those things are all the rage in Hook City. Maybe it's a good thing?" Alleah says quite dryly. She is under no illusion that this is almost certainly a bad thing.

"I'm just going to pop my head in the Second Dinner Club and see if anyone is around. I'd hazard a guess Murphy is right and they've already left, but it's worth checking" Alleah will run to the door of the tower used by Second Dinner Club and push it open. Despite what her mother would say, there are times when knocking isn't appropriate. She will call out before running through the rooms to check for people - hurt or otherwise.

Alleah has a base speed of 30ft, but will be hustling/running to check the Second Dinner Club tower as quickly as possible so the party may then head north

Hazel hears everyone without losing his smile.
"I sure hope noone brought the towers down. But if biguns come causing rukus, I am sure we will be able to show them some "Humble's Swords" hospitality. And I hope those guys of the Second Dinner's Club are ok."
To Murphy he smiles, pointing at a parcel at Faoil side.
"Alouryn wanting me to join you? Of course! She almost kicked me out, and even prepare some lunch for us! This is kind of my work, and now, married, have to make a living!"
He climbs onto Faoil.
"I am ready. As always, I will scout ahead, and will let you know as soon as I find something. Hey Bliss! Wanna come?"
He extends a hand to help Bliss up, if he wants.
Hazel will scout ahead, not waiting for the others, with or without Bliss, as he prefers. Mounted in Faoil he has a 40' base speed (so a 80' hustle each round). He will look for any enemy, or get a good look at the towers, whatever comes first.
If he arrives at the towers without any enemy contact and sees somebody asking for help there he will go an provide it. If not he will remain close, hidden, and wait for the others. If he finds enemies, he will check their kind and how many and turn back, to regroup with the rest.
So, in short, no solo heroics unless somebody is in immediate danger...

"Let me scout it out!" calls Bliss. With his natural speed of 30 boosted to 40 with his longstrider spell, he should set a good pace. And Mookie flies at 40, so he can keep pace just fine. "I'll come back to tell you what I find, Mister Murphy," he calls over his shoulder.

He laughs to see Hazel and the big doggie running too. "Race ya!" he says to Hazel.

He moves fast toward the odd clouds, first catching up to Alleah, then passing her. He keeps alert as he runs next to Faoil. Perception 14.

The big dog may be the winner, since Bliss has to stop every three minutes to recast his Reduce spell.

One by one the group gets together. Instead of rushing out unprepared Murphy suggests to make sure not to do that again. He prefers to take 20 minutes to ready himself and to make sure the rest does too...

As they get out Murphy talks with more people who are interested. Quotiln nods in agreement that Alouryn is mistress of Humble's Sword Burrow. Pirnook Deeppockets ansd the Mayor never seen such an occurance but both concur this needs to be examined! Constable Ostgood is likely to head North also but most likely he first tried to call down people in town... Both gaze Murphy with surprise as the druid suggest putting up barickades and fortificatins... he talks about animals running South but as he voices his concern for one of the giant towers the mayor looks genuinly worried. It's clearly a thought that crossed his mind also...

Alleah shares Murphy's idea of asking the Second Dinner's Club for help. For sure they must have felt the tremmors also! Alleah runs up to their tower and having passed the appropriateness of knocking she just barges in... HELLOO? HELLOOOO!!?... it's dead quiet... Let's assume Murphy was right and they have allready gone North. Alleah is convinced this must be magical For there's just no natural explanation for this phenomenon... it certainly never happened before.

Hazel smiles as when Murphy wonders if Alouryn is ok with him to leave soo soon after the wedding. Of course she wants! She wouldn't want him to abandon his dreams! He doesn't wait for the others. He and Faoil run ahead of the group and is quickly joined by Bliss and Mookie! Of course Hazel and Faoil don't need magic to run this fast so they will win by minutes...

It takes a few hours to get as far as the Giant Tower... in fact this tower is just one of a line of towers that keep the magical barrier intact that has protected the valley for a long time from raids of the hill giants from the North...

Bliss and Hazel are the first to arrive on site and what a sight it is... slowly they take in what they see...

One by one more people are showing up behind Hazel and bliss... soon all of the Humble's Sword, several from town, the mayor, oh you see Primula is there also, the constable also shows and even a few bad apples! All gaze with open mouths at the spectacle that unfolds before you all...

The Giant Tower is a vast round structure. All trees and grasses are magically kept away. Magic is clearly felt in the air... it surges wild around the tower even sending visible and audible rays towards other towers in the valley! It looks like these towers are working like one giant battery powered barrier!! It's both a frightening and an awesome spectacle!! What happens if one barrier is taken away is beyo"d everyone's knowledge... oh well maybe not everyone's knowledge but where's the Second Dinner's Club anyhow?!?

The powerful magic in the air makes the hair on your arms go up... the magic users among you will certainly sense this immense power! Like they could take on the Wold!

There is however one more thing...

From the windows high up in the tower purple smoke rolls down the flanks of the tower. The smoke is heavier than air. The Purple Black sky is making circular patterns above the tower...
Already the smoke is laying around the base blocking all sight at it's base. Occasionally you hear cracking... whining of bricks that move against one another...

What happened??! There's no evidence of the tower being under attack. Then what is causing this?!? The magic power surges seem to be soo powerful that eventually the damaged tower won't hold...

At viewing the tower, Shel did feel the strange surge of magic in the air. She immediately used her ability to Detect Magic as a precursor to trying to identify what had happened. She didn't have much luck, however.

OOC: Spellcraft 12.

"Something's went wrong, creating all this smoke. I'm scared to rush in there, since the whole place seems like it's ready to blow up at any time! Anyone have any ideas how we might safely fix this?"

Sardok takes in the scene before him, scanning the lay of the smoke to see if it's affecting plant life (like a contact poison), where it lays thinnest, and where the most likely spot for a door in would be.

OOC: Perception = 24.

BIC: At hearing Shel's note of caution, Sardok turns to her and replies, "Tell true, Little One, I've no idea how to fix it. But I can see that aught has happened wrongly, and there are probably people in there needing help. Could be people of power or knowledge as to how this happened and how to fix it. I've a sense that seconds count and, alas, this is one instance that careful deliberation and discussion by committee is not our friend.
Such situations call for someone to do something extremely...stupid."


Sardok wraps a scarf around his neck, sucks in a lungful of breath, and charges into the smoke, searching for a way in.

The magical power in the air flows through Alleah's body. She feels it all around her. It's intoxicating.

"Hmmm.... I wonder...." Alleah begins the ritual to cast a Deathwatch spell. (OOC: Curious if the magic in the air affects her ability to cast spells, the potency of her spells, or whether a Ley line/nexus might be present)

"Perhaps an air elemental might help clear some of this smoke?" she looks hopefully to Murphy. Unfortunately that summons spell is beyond Alleah's ability for the time being.

Hazel keeps getting impressed by Bliss. The tiny halfling is not only quiet, but also a really fast runner, almost matching Faoil speed.
At least he is no match in a "hitting monsters with your sling staff" competition.

At the tower Hazel mumbles.
"You don't see that everyday..."
He waits for the rest to arrive, and when they are together again he proposes.
"Do you think somebody is up there? Should we try an get it? Can Murphy or Mookie fly to the window and check? Maybe I can try to reach an entrance, even if that smoke doesn't look healthy..."
He keeps scanning for people in the tower or a possible entrance.

"OH! OH! Mookie, that's us!"

He renews his Reduce Person and shares an Enlarge Person with Mookie. Then he hops on and takes a little flight aroundabouts to see what he can see.

"Don't go in that foggy smoke stuff," Bliss tells Mookie.

The raven caws. "Kid, you got no worries in that front! I'm not going near that!"

Bliss looks around from above, at the tower, in the windows. If anything looks dangerous, he returns toot sweet!

"Whirlwind? Good idea, Alleah. Anyone want to ride in a whirlwind with me up to the tower window? I have two vials of antitoxin* - I'll take one, whoever comes with me can drink the other. Oh, and you'll suffer a bit of bruising if you ride the elemental."

He downs the vial, coughs, then summons a small air elemental. When it arrives, he explains he wants it to pick up him (and his companion, if any), and take us up - making certain we land safely on the ledge of the open window, and not falling to the ground below (so, that will be next round for the appearance and flight).

(PERFECT POSTING!! WELL DONE!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!)

Shel feels the power surge in magic around the tower. Even though she senses her spells have a greater effect she can not put her finger on what kind of magic has been used here... She doesn't like the smoke nor the knowledge that this tower can blow up anytime it seems.

"Perhaps an air elemental might help clear some of this smoke" Alleah says looking hopefully at Murphy. Alleag too casts a spell and senses it having a greater effect! Clearly there must be ley lines crossing beneath the tower! Perhaps even a knot of several lines crossing eachother creating an area of such immense power that it is not without reason the Giant Tower was built here!! Her spell reveals all around here but the range of the spell isn't long enough to sense anything dead or alive inside of the tower yet... Perhaps when she draws nearer she will be able to get some reading...

Hazel too is amazed by what happens. He wonders if anyone is inside and suggest someone able to fly to veer over to one of the higher windows to take a peak inside... He peers through the mist surrounding the base of the tower and as the smoke rolls and moves he catches a glimpse of a door...

Bliss and Mookie understand the qeue and with help of a few spells the dynamic duo quickly is looking down on the tower from above... he peers through some of the windows. only through the upper window this purple mist comes oozing out and it is blocking their view entirely. Through the lower windows they see only a dark staircase...

Murphy turns to his abuse of whirlwinds and intends to enter through one of the windows by aid of this weather phenomenon... Before going he quaffs a vial of antitoxin which might help him withstand any kind of poison... Hazel is daring enough to go with Murphy... No need to command Faoil to stay with the girls! There's not a hair on his fur that is even remotely considering such folley!!

Sardok however doesn't wait for all the spellcasting and preparations. He's a man of action! He wraps a scarf around his neck, sucks in a lungful of breath and charges into the smoke!! The mist hangs about 40ft around the base of the Giant Tower...

Everyone is staring at him as he nears the purple fumes... they look dangerous, poisonous... yet he dives in and quickly vanishes form sight!!

Holding his breath he searches for a way in... it doesn't take long for him to find a huge double door. He pushes against it, he pulls the handle... it's not moving an inch.

A character who has no air to breathe can hold her breath for 2 rounds per point of Constitution. If a character takes a standard or full-round action, the remaining duration that the character can hold her breath is reduced by 1 round. After this period of time, the character must make a DC 10 Constitution check in order to continue holding her breath. The check must be repeated each round, with the DC increasing by +1 for each previous success.

Meanwhile Muprhy has summoned his Air Elemental (1 turn) and has it creating a whirlwind in which he and Hazel are picked up!! Each take 2 HP damage. The cyclonic duo has difficulty to see through the whirlwind but as soon as they come up to a window they try to step out of the cyclone towards the window... the windows seem to repell anyone coming near...

Murphy and Hazel realize that this is one of the Giant Towers... Towers built by the Archmage Shafbaffum to create a forcefield protecting the entire Crescent Valley from invasions by Hill Giants from the North... did you actually consider that Shafbaffum would not have warded the windows from these towers from unauthorised acces?!?

Still more and more people are coming towards the tower. You even heard the crowd sigh when they saw Sardok bravely entering the mist! Right now, half Humble's Ford is watching your actions... try to make a good impression ;-)
For those who check who's among the crowd... Eldon, Cora accompanied by Alouryn have also come to the tower. You can imagine Alouryn's reaction when she saw Hazel goign up a Whirlwind with Murphy!!

The Tower base is hidden within the smoke. More Purple fog comes oozing down the tower from the upper windows... there are signs of cracks in the tower everywhere... occasionally a brick comes loose... Whatever is going on MUST be stopped or the Tower WILL definetely collapse destroying the Crescent Valley barrier!
Purple rays shoot towards the other towers like lightning and the audible effects are like thunder indeed...

"Hold on tight!" bellows Murphy as he takes out a loop of rope. Hold on to the rope, and grab tight with feet and one hand to the roof. We are landing on the roof! he tells Hazel. In the Auran tongue, he shouts, "Laita meille katolla!"*

Meanwhile, somehow or other, he clearly could tell that the window area was arcane locked.

If they make a safe landing on the roof, Murphy wants to secure them there with rope, make sure rope is affixed to something solid, then tie a length or two long enough to reach to the ground. That won't happen, likely, until next round or so.

First d20+6=26 was spellcraft (nat 20). Ignore second - I clicked on 'Roll' when trying to change number to +7 for fortitude save on landing. d20+7=12 --> fort save to land on roof and stay there. Might add +2 since Hazel and I are each holding on to rope, and trying to remain on roof with all our might. If it is flat or lightly peaked, might be easy. If it is more sharply peaked, then hopefully the loop of rope surrounds the peak, with Hazel on one side, and Murphy on the other.

I too will make efforts to post everyday (I may occasionally (once every three weeks or so) miss a Thursday for snowboard classes but then I'll definetely post on Saturday to compensate.)

- not sure what Murphy tries to do on the roof of the tower... hint... there's no roof terras ;-)
- Hazel, all windows are have portcullis style bars. To make it even harder to open them they all have those Arcane Locks on them. This is also why Bliss and Mookie could see a staircase through the lower windows
- Sardok, I trust you continue holding your breath?! Not saying that it's needed but who knows... Know that every character can hold his breath for 2 rounds per constitution point. (by the way I still haven't got acces to your character sheet - please make sure everyone who has the link is granted reading rights)

[So, I need a description of the tower roof. Conical? Rounded? Is there a vane or pole at the top? If sloped, is the slope sharp or shallow? By what you said - there is no roof terrace - I assume you mean the roof is not flat. Help me understand it. If there is a reasonable way for two halflings who are holding on to a common looped rope to be let off at the top center and somehow hold on, or have something to hold on to, that is my intention. So, architectual details would be appreciated. Murphy, if it appears at all feasible, wants to affix a rope to something on the roof, and to have that long silk rope hanging from the top, that he and Hazel might use it to descend, and figure out a way to enter. Or, descend to the ground and go up the stairs.]

With the others flying off Alleah isn't going to just stand about! She has to do something. Probably. Maybe.

First things first - finding a door in. Alleah will hold her breath and move towards where she thinks/hopes the door might be. Hopefully there is some sort of path or worn trail that might indicate such. (Perception: 21)

If she finds a door, her first instinct will be to try and open it. If it's unlocked - great! - she enters!

If it's locked, well, no time for subtlety. Fortunately, Alleah is not one to be subtle. Out comes the portable ram from her kit! But small stature means less strength, so now's the time to get a bit bigger. Alleah reaches for the nearest ley line and casts Enlarge Person on herself, growing to, well medium size. (Ley line check: 81 = Ok!)

With her enlarged form she takes hold of the ram and tries to break the door down! (Portable ram gives +2 bonus. Guidance gives a +1. Enlarged size negates her natural str deficiency. Rolled a Nat20! 23 + an automatic +2 if someone else helps Alleah break the door down)

In time of trouble a watch would be stationned in the upper chamber which has windows all around. It's from those upper windows alone the purple smoke oozes...

The towers have an 80ft diameter base and reaches up as high as 150ft!! These are GIANT towers in every aspect. Along the vast towers you can see windows (or more like barred portholes) that spiral upward (no smoke coming from those). Occasionally, with bad weather you can't even see the Tower top! As far as masonry is concerned, the towers are built from huge stone blocks. The tower may crack and loose some bricks but they are made to withstand the fiercest attacks... wich leads to believe it won't just collapse so easily...

The whirlwind sets Hazel and Murphy down in the center of the flat roof, and returns to its natural form as an air elemental. Murphy looks about, and cautiously rises to his feet. He asks the airy creature to clear a path through the purple smoke at the base of the tower, from the door out to the edge of the smoke, and then feel free to leave.

He lets the rope play out between himself and Hazel. "Let's hold on to this, in case the tower shakes or anything, and look to see if there might be something to fasten it to up top."

Meanwhile, he looks for anything useful to tie his rope to. He takes a second length of rope out of his backpack, then ties it firmly to the end of the first one. "Do you have any rope, Haze? Right now, I estimate we'll only have to fall about fifty or sixty feet feet once we get to the end of what I have."

Perched on the windowsill before trying to squeeze through the bars, Bliss finds a moment to stop and look around. He grins and waves to everyone he sees gathered below, a hundred-plus feet straight down!

"Watch this trick!" the tiny fellow says to Mookie.

The bird is about to splutter some objection when the small halfling performs a flip and turn, grabs the bars, flips again, and plants a perfect landing on the sill.

As Murphy and Hazel realize there's no way in for them through the lower windows due to the arcane lock they have the whirlwind take them up on the roof... (Murphy 3 Hp damage Hazel 5 HP damage.) The whirlwind has them land in relative safety up on the tower... Although safe!? Both can feel the electrical current sizzle through the tower. The hair on their head stands straight up!

Shel urges everyone to be careful and the public around her follows suit with several Ooohs and Aaahs...

Bliss and Mookie too fly up and around the tower and find a suiting window to squeeze through...

Hidden away from spectators Sardok hopes to get passed the door. Alleah hopes to give him and hand and like Sardok she dives into the purple mist.Sardok tries his luck on the arcane lock and in 4 rounds he manages to bypass the lock! All that remains now are the sturdy steel band reinforced doors
... But enlarged Alleah used a portable ram to batter down the doors! With an epic blow she has the door splinter on its hinges!! The tower is open!! But so far only Sardok and Alleah know...

Up on the roof Hazel urges Murphy to try and get down again... The ropes Murphy carries will only get them about 100ft (minus knots and so) down. Hazel looks down at Faoil who sits besides Alouryn and sighs that the ropes in Faoil's baxckpack now would sure come in handy...

Bliss is the first one inside... He squeezes passed the barred windows. He enters about 100ft above ground level...

"Sorry, Hazel, I do not have real easy access to an entire population of air elementals. I do have an idea or two, though. Give me a moment," Murphy requests of his friend.

He looks over the edge. He sees an exceptionally large black crow a ways down. "Mookie! Say, if we lower a loop of rope down to you, can you have Bliss tie it on to some of the iron window bars? That might give us a chance to get down from here a bit more safely."

Then he pats the right pocket of his coveralls just below his waist. "Just remembered I have a potion that might help us. Uh, you wouldn't mind carrying me down, if I could help you float down easily?"

He looks back over the ledge. "I think I figured a way to get us down to that window Mookie is at, then to pull down the rope we use to climb down, and then have close to the one hundred feet of rope we need to get the rest of the way down. I'll explain it in a moment."

Bliss grovels on the floor, too scared to continue.

Medium-sized Alleah holds the portable ram in one hand and gives a thumbs-up to Sardok. Smashing a door like that was quite invigorating. There is no way she can proceed safely under the weight of the ram, so takes a moment to put it back in her kit. After that, time to enter this tower and see where all this smoke is coming from.

She can start to feel some pressure in her lungs from holding her breath,

Sardok raises his eyebrows and looks at Alleah with appreciation; an expert of destruction appreciating a job well done. Murphy recoils the ropes most of the way, leaving the knot between the two intact, and puts it on the holder just behind his right hip. However, a length of rope at one end he uses to loop around his own lower hips and another loop around his chest, just under his arms, with appropriate knots to secure, then repeats the process around Hazel's chest, then down around his lower hips, with the end coming back to tie off to the line around Murphy's hips. He takes out the potion of feather fall.

"So, Hazel, what you do is this. You are going to open the stopper on this vial. One hand will hold it. Your other hand will keep your thumb over the top. We will take three steps and jump away from the tower together. When we are just over halfway down - I'd guess that would take about two seconds - swallow the potion. Then you will float like a feather - about ten feet a second - though you'll feel the ropes pulling against you from my weight. I think you're strong enough to bear that, though. We land, move away from the smoke, get out of the ropes, then take a deep breath and head on into and up the tower."

"Ready? Oh, just a moment." Murphy leans over the edge of the tower, still seeing the purplish smoke emanating from the upper windows. He shouts to the crowd near the foot of the tower, "Watch out below! We are going to land right there!", as he point to a spot about fifteen to twenty feet from the base. "Don't worry - we should land softly!" he tells the crowd below.

Turning his attention back to Hazel, he says, "I will say, 'Ready, set, go,' and we will then take three steps and jump away from the tower. All right, take the stopper out. You've got the vial, right? Good. Other thumb over the top? Right. Ready. Set. Go!"

Then, moving in pace with his childhood buddy, Murphy and Hazel together take the next great step in their ongoing adventures.

When Bliss made his acrobatic jump to the window they all held their breath and you could almost hear a simultanious sigh when he safely got out of sight... oh well... safe...

But back on the roof Hazel and Murphy still struggle how to get down. The druid contemplate he hasn't got an entire population of elementals available and hopes to find a different way. He looks over the edge of the tower... oh gosh that's deep...
He checks to see if Mookie can help but apparently the bord is seriously preoccupied with his master for some reason. Checking his pockets Murphy then realizes he has something else he could use... kinda experimental but who knows...

Among the crowd Shel does her best to have everyone back away from the tower in the event that is should collapse after all...

Hidding for all but Mookie, Bliss was surprised by the fearsome looks of the statue of a black dragon. He cowers on the ground. Stuttering and terrified he tries to explain to Mookie what he saw. Seems the Dragon has given him a riddle... yet he was too scared to listen... to scared to understand what was asked. Mookie urges him to ask it once more... but will he be given a second chance?! Mookie cunningly deducts that the dragon won't kill Bliss untill he has answered the riddle... asking to explain the riddle once again in a polite way should not be that much of a problem now would it?

Again the deep rumbling voice can be heard... a shiver runs along Bliss's spine... he can almost feel the blistering breath of the Dragon as the words echo through the Giant Tower...

Bliss only:

Downstairs the combined efforts from Alleah and Sardok have broken down the door!! (just for your info, the disable device from Sardok bypassed the arcane lock and as such lowered the DC to break the door by 10 which was sufficient for Alleah's excellent rolls - well done the two of you!!)

Alleah stores away the portable ram and then finds her way through the fog and to the belly of the tower... Sardok appreciates a job well done and follows Alleag into the tower. He intends to dash forward to the stairs (which would mean crossing the floor to the opposite side of the tower - Too far to get there.
However...

The spiraling staircase is dimly lit with flickering torches, dusty stairs ascend into bleak darkness beyond. High above you you heard a rumbeling voice... On the other side of the tower you see the stairs. THe pavement is nice black and white tiled. Not much to be found down here except for 2 large chains on the ground. Perhaps something has been kept in chains here and either was released or has escaped?!

The moment you enter through the door you are out of the fog. Apparently the closed door also kept the smoke form entering the tower. It seems the smoke oozes from the top windows only and has not found a way to the interior of the tower. Sardok hurries to make his way to the other side of the tower (80ft distance) but he has not yet reached the stairs. Alleah just entered the ante chamber...
}

Bliss is cowering somewhere up on the stairs for reasons only known to him and Mookie. Bliss is shaken for 14 rounds. A shaken character takes a --2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. The dragon does not move... nor did you... perhaps the words you said were an answer to his riddle... perhaps not...

Shel keeps aside and pushes the public away from the tower. She is aided by the constable, the mayor and even Eldon tries to advice people to back away.

Alleah has entered the tower but just got passed the doorway (out of the fog)

Sardok too has entered the tower and is hurrying accross the floor

And our cycloniv duo Hazel and Murphy are up on the roof trying desperately to come down. Hazel agrees to carry Murphy although he doens't really understand what that would do to help. His eyebrows probably go all the way up to his hairline as Murphy explains his intent to basejump of the tower...

"Watch out below! We are going to land right there!"

The moment he shouts that many begind to shout back and cry in terror. Alouryn is desperate shudders in fear. The fact they should land sofetly got lost in the noise below... They are all waving urging not to jump!!!

Murphy takes a step back and then he goes up and over the ledge...

Will Hazel follow suit and remember to quaff the potion 'half way down'... I'll need some rolls on this...

Hazel thinks in all the stupid and imprudent things Murphy and he have done together, mostly as small halflings in the forest, trying their luck with the innocence (stupidity?) of youth.
No, this must be the stupidest of them all.
He puts his thumb on the vial, to avoid it from pour on the fall, and tries to jump right at the same time as Murphy.
While falling he discovers he don't like flying, and that birds are suicidal manics for doing it...
He tries to put the vial to his lips, and tries to drink the potion, while avoiding seeing the ground, as he realizes nothing good will come to see where Murphy and he will become a splat in the dirt.
After (if he is able) drinking the potion, and before (if) it makes effect he will release the vial and grab the rope, trying to avoid Murphy's weight from breaking his ribs.
He prays Murphy got a light breakfast today.

Alleah holds a finger in the air, gesturing for Sardok to wait just a moment. Then she risks it all by finally exhaling and trying to breathe the air in here. Fingers crossed there is still some oxygen in here.

If so, she let's him know it is safe to breathe once more, before following him wherever he goes. And where in the Wold are the others? Alleah saw them all fly up and they haven't come back down yet. And now hearing noises above them she suspects there is a fight she is missing out on. Otherwise, they would have signalled her they were safe. No, things are very wrong in this place.

"Bliss? Murphy? Hazel? Where are you?" she calls out in her new "big girl" form "We're coming!"

150 ft is a long way to fall and trying to drink a potion in mid flight is a ludicrous thing to do... The mere thought of this is just soo crazy that actually doing this is either worth a hero point or a visit to Lord Gargul...

Below people from Humble's Ford shout and scream in terror as they expect to see their hero's plummet to the ground. Alouryn passes out!! Faoil spots his master and barks 'n yelps loud. You can almost hear panick in the way he barks!

But then in mid flight Hazel brings the vial to his mouth and meanwhile the rope between him and Murphy keeps the two close together...

(DM OOC - I just find the idea soo crazy that I honestly can't have these two nutcakes splat on the ground... I'm far to nice and will have to confront the PTB for this)

Hazel somehow manages to swallow the Feather Falling potion and immediately feels his fall is slowed down. However Murphy still falls mercilessly towards the 'soft' grass below... Suddenly the rope tighthens and both Hazel and Murphy can feel their lungs being empties from the terrible force! (Both take 1d8 non leathal: 3HP Murphy, 7HP Hazel)

The Feather Fall potion work yet their speed goes up again... Hazel now carries his own gear plus Murphy along with all his belongings and 2 sets of rope... Dispite his decent strength that's beyond his maximum carrying capacity (which is the max for feather falling). About 40ft above ground level their speed is too high to land safely... (count fall damage of 20ft altitude : 8HP Murphy, 9HP Hazel)

Inside the tower Alleah signals Sardok to wait a moment. She tests breathing and finds no trouble at all. Careful though... now the door is open, the purple mist also slowly but steadily flows into the tower. The smoke is heavier than air and thus will roll along the floor. She calls out for Bliss, Murphy and Hazel thinking those three are up in the tower allready. Little does she know about the daring basejump those two made... She rushes over to Sardok.

Outside Shel calls out for Alleah hoping to learn if there's safe breathing inside. However... she might be a bit preoccupied watching the falling duo. Still Alleah heard her and yells back that all is safe inside... 'safe'?!

Up in the tower for no one to see Blissstands up trembling and addresses the Dragon claiming he's a Statue... The Dragon Statue closes his eyes and moves its head aside.

"Enter", the dark voice rumbles...

Mookie makes frantic efforts to break through the bars?!? Apart from a serious headache the bird won't make much progress...

Sardok stands motionless close to the stairs...

[Just about a perfect description, Steven! Murphy is not quite as studied as was Galileo at Pisa on the rate of falling objects. He should have told Hazel (and I knew he should have told Hazel) to wait until they were about 50-60 feet above the ground to swallow the potion... but Murphy was not certain just how long the potion would last. One round? Three rounds? No one told him. So, he kind of guessed - and I knew it was likely the feather fall would expire a bit early. So, the fall... slow.. fall again as you described was terrific. And, ouch! But the halflings at least can hobble away.]

"Weeeeeiii Ahhh! Weee... OOF!"

Murphy lies on the ground a moment, the wind knocked out of his lungs, staring at the sky next to Hazel's hair on this right. Their passage through the air seems to have cleared a small spot of the purple haze. He struggles to get air into his lungs, opening and closing his mouth like a trout does when swimming along the creek bed. A raspy sound comes as he finally sucks some fresh air in. He blows it out, takes in more, and again. He sees a cloud that seems to spin madly above him, then it settles down and stops its spin. He closes his eyes.

"Hazel. Hazel. Are you alive?" he asks just above a whisper. The purple haze again draws near, but he does not know whether he can hold his breath, let alone stand up.

We know not what transpires here, but if we are to prevent catastrophe, we must needs to it quickly. I trust to Shel to find her way with the backs of our heels to guide her."

Hearing urgent voices calling his and Hazel's name, Murphy forgoes the luxury of enumerating his sore spots. "Up, Hazel. Let's get untied, and out of this coming purple. No, let me cut it." He draws dagger, and slits the silk rope at the few places where they are joined together. "All right - hold your breath, and we head to the tower door. They are calling for us." Murphy takes a breath, almost coughing, but holding it in, then heads, almost dragging Hazel along with him toward the open tower door. He wonders whether Alouryn might be running toward them, emanating her healing surges which have helped them so often when they traveled together...

OOC: Just one observation... Hazel Maximum carrying capacity is 132 lbs. His carried equipment is weights 23.43 lbs (the rest is, as I mentioned earlier "on Faoil saddlebags". I think Murphy weights 45 lbs, and his equipment 23.1 lbs (at least that is what his sheets says). So he should be able to carry Murphy (damn, he is even able to carry himself AND Murphy).
On the other side, if I were the DM I would say the "rope" damage is lethal... People die in accidents where ropes cut them in half :S

Muprhy lies on the ground a moment, wind knocked out of his lungs, staring at the sky... This perhaps was not the smartest thing to do and the druid realizes he's lucky to be alive still. He checks with Hazel who he hopes has also lived...

Standing close to Sardok, Alleah shouts for Shel asking her to shut the doors behind her... yeah sure... if it hadn't been for Alleah's portable ram that could perhaps have been an option. Right now, the door hangs loose on its hinges. As such, it's impossible to close the door again up to the point where no fumes will enter the base level... She rushes forward towards the stairs with the intent to get up to where she believes her friends are. After all, she doesn't know where Bliss, Hazel nor Murphy are! All she knows is that Shel's shouting behind her, having seen Hazel and Murphy go up in a whirlwind and that she heard noises high up in the tower. Didn't someone ever warn you about the dangers of splitting up?!? So she beckons for Sardok to join her up the stairs...

Outside Shel advises Murphy and Hazel to stop playing around. After all, they are all needed in the tower! She dives through the fog (also holding her breath) and makes it indoor.

Sardok nods at Alleahand agrees that they are to make haste. He runs up the stairs...

Murphy gets back to his senses as he hears his friends shouting for him and Hazel. Bruised and battered he tries to cut the ropes. Hazel clearly now agrees that this was in fact madness...
(you are in combat rounds now, so there's a move action to draw your dagger and a standard action to cut the ropes - no running just yet)

High up in the tower Bliss shouts gleefully "I DID IT! I DID IT! I solved the riddle!"

True...

However... Only now Sardok realises rushing up the stairs wasn' t the brightest thing to do...


The moment Alleah and Sardok set foot on the stairs Sardok's worst fear becomes reality!! The two large chains wiggle and stand up... (move action).

C1 lashes out at Sardok - hits AC26 - Damage 9
C2 lashes out at Alleah - hits AC28 - Damage 16

To make it all worse both make an attempt to grapple both Sardok and Alleah!!!

Ohhh why ohh why did thou split up...

There IS however one interesting thing about the tower. Alleah and Shel feel invigorated by the presence of the Magic that flows through the tower! They even faintly glows... Even Bliss can feel the same intoxicating rush of the powerful Ley Line crossings...

Sardok thinks for a moment that he must be hallucinating as his his instinct turns out to be dead on. He makes a firm resolution to listen to his gut as he is soundly trussed and thrashed by an inanimate object.

His attempts at battle-cries or any speech at all come out as incomprehensible yelling between the thrashing of the chains and his own rage for having seen yet not acted.

He tries to keep enough wherewithal to draw his weapons, and slash at the chains, though his small weapons make little headway against the iron monstrosities.

Alleah yells in a mixture of surprise and pain. She tries to identify some weakness in the animated chains in front of her and even though she realizes her spell wasn't all that powerfull, the increased strength thanks to the Ley Line Crossings give he some insights about the chains after all! Knowing she can't take a second beating like that she backs up against the wall and yells for her friends to come and help!!

The haunted chain fights until destroyed and they are here to protect the stairs and to prevent any unauthorized intruders to go up...

Hazel and Murphy stand up and untie themselves and make a run for the tower... but oops... looks like they forgot to hold their breath?! Please make a FORT DC15.

Up on the stairs Bliss hears his friends calling. He's about 100ft straight up in the tower and it's a spiral staircase to race down from. 60ft is about 1/4 of a full circle in the tower and he decends about 50ft per full circle. That means about 8 turns to get to ground level. I've added Bliss to the map he's now at +87.5ft above ground level and spirals down counter clockwise.

Shel sees the two chains but shouts for Sardok and Alleah to hang in there. A double move forward places her right in the middle of the two chains...

Grappled by the chain 1 Sardok goes for his weapon and tries to dent the chain but without any luck. His aim was skillful though... but the hardness of the chain is hard to overcome. Chain 1 still wiggles him higher and higher...

The movement from this chain is making Alleah dizzy and light-headed. Then again, perhaps that is from the blood loss? She can feel it run down her arms as the chain tightens its grip on her.

Sardok receives Murphy's healing and achingly hoists himself up. "Gratitude," he says, before turning his attention to the now-still chain on the floor.
"It can't be that simple," he says, almost to himself. "Murphy, do you have any rope? Or any chain?" Without waiting for an answer, his eyes climb up to the brave little cleric now struggling in the air.

It's obvious what he has to do.

But this was gonna suck.

His eyes draws a line from where she is, straight down, and prepares to try and catch her.

Bliss races further down while he draws his Bah. He is now 75ft above ground level. From his elevated position he fires down at Chain 1. Fantastic aim from that distance yet the bolt just bounces off the steel chains...

Hazel has no trouble shaking of any negative effects from the purple fumes. He rushes in and screams at the chain while he attempts to grapple it (+2 with a charge applies to Bull Rush, not grapple) but he fails. With no improved grapple this offers Chain 2 an Attack of Opportunity yet while holding Alleah the Chain refrains from attacking Hazel too... Oh we do have to note that Chain 2 isn't particulary impressed by Hazel's shouts to release Alleah...

Shel fires a scorching ray at Chain 2 and she succesfully damages some chackles! Still the ray does less damage that it potentially could!

Grappled Alleah realizes there isn't all that much she can do... she has seen Sardok plummet to the ground and it feels as if the ground is just seconds away from her... question is if she will still be alive the moment her body collapses with the pavement beneath her?! She attempts the wiggle free but the chains are too strong. She attempts to play death and feints (When feinting against a nonhumanoid you take a --4 penalty so Bluff check) The chain is bamboozled by Alleah's trick!!

Having seen Sardok smashed to the ground Murphy hustles over to heal some of his wounds yet falls only a few feet short... But while Sardok repositions himself Murphy can strecth out his hand and deliver the healing spell...

Happy to be yet in a healther state Sardok seems to have an idea... but first things first and he just knows that Chain is going to drop Alleag to the cold and merciless floor. All he can do is try to break her fall so he positions himself to catch her.

The druid moves over to Alleah, and casts cure light wounds, healing her for 9 hp. "'Leah, you all right? Can you hear me?"

He sees Sardok's sacrificial move.

"I just wish that Fatine had returned my wand of cure light wounds to me before she left the group!" exclaims Murphy. [Note: She gave the wand to Bliss, and asked him to give the wand back to Murphy. Bliss never mentioned this to Murphy, and instead handed the wand over to Alleah. Murphy does not know she has it.]

"Are those chains only attacking those who attack them, or who go up the steps?" he asks. [Perception: 26] "Because, if so - stop attacking, and stay off the stairs until we all get healed up. The one who made this tower was not a wicked man, if stories about Shafbaffum are true. If we use our minds, rather than brute force, perhaps we can get past these chains with much less bruising."

Then he sees the chain picking up Shel. He intends to try to do for her as Sardok did for Alleah... except, that will have to wait until next round.

Alleah opens her eyes to see the familiar sight of her childhood classroom. All the other children are looking at her, as the teacher (a spectacled drow) stands with arms folded and looking down on her.

"I said, do you know what happened to my book?"

Alleah looks around her. This situation is very familiar. Best bet is to just see things through. "I ... I borrowed it" she answers meekly.

The drow woman raises an eyebrow "That book was in a darkwood cupboard, locked by a triple-barrel Wernstrem mithral lock. Are you trying to tell me that you somehow managed to access it?" she asks dubiosly.

Alleah stays quiet.

"Alleah? ALLEAH?"

Alleah opens her eyes to the sound of Murphy's familiar voice. It takes a moment for her to gain her bearings. She was up high, and now she's on the ground. Well, not so much on the ground as she is on Sardok. "Why am I on top of Sardok? Enchantment spell? No. Judging by these cracked ribs it was a fall"

If she had blood to spare, Alleah would blush right about now. As it is she still looks quite pale. First things first. Alleah releases a wave of positive energy to heal those that are injured.

"These chains are haunted. I can channel energy to harm them, but I'm worried doing so would make me a target again" she groans as she clutches her side.

With her other hand, Alleah reaches in to her kit to retrieve the CLW wand. It's likely going to be used very very soon.

As Sardok rises slowly from the pool of darkness drowning his mind, he feels a heavy weight on his chest constricting his breathing.
'Oh no!' he thinks. I've cracked so many ribs I can't breath!

His hands rise slowly to probe the damage to his chest, only to find a soft and yielding weight. 'There's a girl on top of me? Why is there a girl on top of me? I don't feel like I'm having fun.'

After another moment's recollection, the answer comes bubbling up. 'Oh, right. Alleah fell on me.'

He hears Murphy cast a healing glow on her, and she stirs (in a not all-unpleasant manner) and seems to reciprocate, and Sardok feels the worst of internal organs become un-jellified.

"Sorry, Alleah, I think I got more stuff to do." he says as he struggles out from under her.

As his perception rotates down from the ceiling, he notices Bliss rushing down at them. "Bliss! Get down here! Can you make me big?" he calls, a plan forming in his mind.

Murphy seems to have Shel, well, at least handled as much as we can, and agrees with his suggestion. "Hazel! Get off of it! The other chain isn't even attacking us! We need to back off and think of something else!"

Sardok had a couple ideas, but all of them started with the group staring passively at two non-attacking chains.

Bliss makes another move action down the stairs, closer. Then he casts a Hold Animal spell on the less damaged chain. Will it work? Darned if he knows!

Hold Animal is a second level witch spell. Bliss has a Cha 14, so his save DC is a 14.

He holds his breath, does his best, and hopes.

The moment Alleah crashes lifeless to the ground Murphy sprints to her aid. He notices Sardok looks kinda squashed beneath her and whishes Fatine had returned his wand... little does he know it's closer than he thinks...

He does seem to note that the Chains are only attacking all who goes up the stairs or attacks them! He is wise to realize that he who made this tower was not a wicked man! Perhaps there are different ways to get passed these chain guards...

Hazel won't leave Shel in the grasp of the Chain and once again, dispite Murphy's and Sardok's warnings, attempts to grapple the steel construct... yet again without success...

Like Alleah, Shel hopes to avoid getting squashed like a lemon and plays dead...

Alleah is off this Wold and has a comateus dream of her childhood untill she's suddenly pulled back to the harsh reality by her druid friend. For a moment she wonders why she's on top of Sardok but judging by her injuries she's able to deduct she must have fallen on top of him... Retrieving a potion she refrains from attacking the chains once again.

"Why is there a girl on top of me?"...

Such hilarious thoughts can only race through Sardok's mind as he tries to probing the damage to his chest, only finding Alleah... A split second he appears to be enjoying himself but he quickly recovers himself and goes back to business. Yelling, he urges Bliss to get down.

Bliss races further down (now at 62.5 above ground level). Feeling the intensity of magic swirling around the tower the little witch hopes her spells will have an improved effect... yes spells might have a bigger effect but a Hold Animal won't do anything against an animated construct... As he hears Sardok he yells he's on his way...

With Shel no longer resisting Chain 2 merely lifts her seemingly lifeless body and throws her away... she plummets 30ft down and crashes into the pavement near U13...

Then Chain 2 turns her attention to the vermin (Hazel) that once again tries to hug her... This time the chain retalliates (HITS AC16) but fails to connect to the ranger!

Chain 1 extends to full height almost reaching up to Bliss who just used a spell on it... then it wiggles and curls up on the ground... waiting... guarding...

Meanwhile, through the slammed door, the purple fog slowly enters the tower...

Oh and in case you wonder... that dreadfull thundering sound are noises high up in the tower causing the whole place to tremble... dust constantly falls down on you and the occasional little pebble that also crashes down doesn't make you feel at ease at all...

Sardok has a chance to take a breath and look about him.

He sees the first chain strecth up, up, up, and try to get at Bliss, but he's just out of it's range, so it slinks back down.

So that makes them, what, about 60 feet in height?

And the only attack people that attack them...or actually step on the stairs.

Of course! It's so obvious! Why didn't he see it before!

He calls out to the waiting Bliss. "Bliss! Sweet Bliss! Have your bird come down so that it might fly something back up to you!"

That done, he bends knee and begins rooting in his backpack, coming up with a coil of rope.

A single coil. Too short!

"Does ANYONE have any more rope?" he asks his friends, his voice cracking in pain and desperation.

"Well, you see all this rope wrapped around me? And rope wrapped around Hazel? And this coil of more silk rope at my hip, Sardok? Yep, we have some rope." He hands the 50' coil of silk rope at his hip to Sardok, untying it the end from the length wrapped around his own body. "If you need more than that, between us we have about another 45 or so feet of rope left - in two sections."

"Alleah, I see that Fatine must have given you my wand before she left the group. Mind if I put that to good use?" If so, he uses it first to help Sardok a bit, for 4 hp from a cure light wound spell discharged from the small stick.

Should the group move from combat to regular time for a while as they stop attacking the chains or trying to go directly up the stairs, Murphy will systematically begin bringing everyone up to full health - Alleah, Shel, Sardok, Hazel, and himself. Bliss is too far away, and Murphy does not know whether or not he is injured. [CLW: 3, 6, 6, 8, 9, 3, 4, 3, 5, 4, 3, 5, 3, 6, 9, 6, 8... cut off applications when all are full or within one or two points of full health]

I could set up a wind wall to keep more from coming in, but that will only last for about half a minute."

Bliss feels helpless up on the stairs but he seems to realise getting further down will likely have the chains attack him... He stands ready to cast a spell upon anyone who is thrown around by the chains...

I'm okay, Shel shouts as daringly she gets back on her feet... While she gives advice to her friends not to fight, she ponders how to get around these powerful animated objects...

Sardok too catches his breath and finally takes some time to observe the 'enemy'... looks like they can only reach up some 60ft so Bliss should be perfectly safe up there! Then it hits him... how could he have missed it while it was soo obvious!?! The chains only attack people that attack them or actually step on the stairs!! He then calls out for Bliss to have Mookie fly down to get some rope... Oh that's right... Mookie still has a headache from banging his head against the steel bars that protected the windown Bliss soo cunningly squeezed by.

Hazel takes the advice to play dead quite literally and he just drops on the ground and stops moving :-)

Hearing Sardok call out for rope, Murphy points at the rope that tied him and Hazel together as they basejumped of the tower. He hands the rope and then goes about patching up everyone. He remembers his trusted pony is carrying around just about everything that is sold at Pirnook's but he might not have enough time to retrieve all that... after all, this tower is in dire shape and above all, those purple fumes are closing in on them...

"Where's a rust monster when you need one?", Alleah grumbles as she still lies on the ground. Uncertain the 'play dead' tactic will actually work she holds up her shield and prepares to defend herself further. Yes, the chains might have attacked her first... but wasn't she the first one to race up those stairs?!?

He sees all of his friends talking and planning how to get up the tower. He stands and go to check on Alleah and Shel.
"Are you ok?"
He tells his friends he should be able to hoist them up, using the rope, if needed (I think he is the strongest of the group).
"I need to get up there first, of course..."
He looks around the chains and the tower base to find something to turn off the chains, a password or something that will let them pass unattached.

At the end he holds his breath and go to close the doors, while waving his hands to make the fog go away...

"Thanks, Murphy! I feel much better," Shel smiles after her friend uses the healing wand on her. She waits to see if Bliss and Mookie have any luck tying off a rope. "I'm not a good climber, but if I tie the rope around myself, I'm sure Mookie or one of you could help pull me up. I definitely don't want to anger those crazy chains again!"

OOC: Using Murphy's dice rolls for the healing wand, and Alleah going first, as Murphy per, then Shel going next, there was plenty enough healing to get both of them to full. There are still more points out there for everyone else.

Alleah is still not ready to lower her defences. These chains nearly sent her to the afterlife.

She maintains her prone position on the floor for the moment. Rising would only give these chains another chance to attack.

Alleah defensively casts a Detect Poison spell and looks to the purple fog coming in through the door. Hey, if it's not poisonous then no need to worry. Then again, if it IS poisonous then the group have other issues (Wis check vs DC20 to specifically ID any poison: 8=Fail)

IF the chains do not move at all, then Alleah will try standing up.

Then he says, "I'll shapechange to a large eagle and carry the end of the rope upwards, give it to Bliss, who can tie it off. Hazel, you want to try to climb it, then take turns pulling people up?" He pauses, then adds, "Before I do that, does anyone have any questions? Because I won't be able to talk with you very well as an eagle. And if the chains attack those who climb the rope, I don't know what to try next."

Bliss goes up the stairs to the window, ends the Enlarge Person on Mookie, casts Reduce Person on him, and beckons him to enter.

"Cmon Mooks! I have a job for ya!"

"Mooks?" mutters the raven.

Once the bird is in the tower, Bliss cancels the Reduce and casts Enlarge again.

"Fly down to Mister Murphy there and take that rope he has for ya. Then fly back up here. Watch out for those chains -- they shouldn't bother you, but who knows?"

Bliss calls down, "Here he comes!"

Hazel cautiously opens an eye checking to see if the chains have stopped attacking indeed... Next hs stands to checks on Shel and next he looks up understanding that he's probably the first to climb his way up... He fails to find anything that resembles a lever or a riddle that could have the chains allow safe passage. A thought springs to his mind having him to reflect who the ones are that build this tower and who would be the ones that need to be allowed to go upstairs?!?

Fully healed Shel feels much better. She hopes there will be ways to have herself hoisted up for she's no good climber at all and the prospect of having to face the chains again isn't very appealing.

Like Hazel, Alleah too carefully lowers her defences however she does remain prone. She's worried that standing would have the chains spring to life again... The witch checks on the purple fog hoping to determine if it's poisonous or not... She's quite convinced it's harmless...

Not quite believing Alleah deduction of the fog, Murphy casts a nifty spell to keep the fumes from endangering them all. Next he suggest shapechanging and then carrying a rope or something up to Bliss. However the tiny witch yells down from her safe position that Mookie will help. Did Mookie by any chance see what the chains did to the others?!? Perhaps the bird wouldn't be that keen on flying down there if he had...

Once Mookie is down, Murphy hands him the rope and waits till the trusted raven flies back up...

Everyone waits as Mookie comes down... 100ft... 80ft... 60ft... that's about the extent of the chains they noticed earlier... still they don't seem to move... 40ft... still nothing... 20ft... ok looks quite safe...

...

The chains don't even move an inch.

After tying the two ropes together, and calling frantically for Bliss' bird, he waits patiently as the bird comes down takes the rope...from Murphy.

Sardok drops the rope and waits patiently for his chance to climb up. After mumbling something about this is indeed a tough crowd, and how he can't get no respect, he answers the Ranger's musings.

"Alright, Hazel, I'm problably the fastest climber, so I'll go last, just in case a hasty retreat is called for."

Murphy gives Hazel one additional healing touch from the wand, for 6 hp (Hazel now at full).

He rigs a simple harness, and finds a place along a wall, a bit off the ground, to affix the bottom end of the rope, so that people will climb at a slant - a little easier for the members of the party who are not quite as strong. "Hazel, could you help pull Shel along behind you? And Sardok, when you climb, could you do likewise for Alleah? They both are strong of will, but you two I think are a bit stronger of arm."

The harness forms a three-rope seat of sorts to go under the bottom of the assisted climbers, and loops over the top of the rope, so that if advancement is stalled, at least they will not drop directly from height. He offers a similar harness for the pullers. And, going after Hazel and Shel, he uses the harness himself. However, as he waits for Hazel and Shel to make it up, he casts longstrider upon himself, increasing his movement speed, then heals himself to full with two nice applications of the wand of cure light wounds (7hp + 9 hp=16, and he was down 13 hp).

On his turn Murphy takes 10 on his climb check (10+6=16). With the slight slope of the rope, plus the aid of the harness, one might argue that an additional bonus of +2 - +5 could apply (or a base DC of 10), but I'll just go with the base DC 15 for a (generally) unknotted rope.

Shel grabs ahold of Hazel and tries to loop the rope around her for the climb. There was no way she could do this on her own. "Good thing you are so strong, Hazel, or I'd have to sit this one out. Climbing is not my strong suit...I could try for a year and not make it up.". Once her feet touch the ground on the next level, she begins looking around what might be happening up there.

(Friday's Post)

Ropes are tied together and Mookie brings is up to Bliss. The tiny witch looks for something to attach the rope too... Mookie reminds him of the steel bars that protect the windows! For sure those halflings must weigh less that those bars can hold!

The upstairs is secure. Murphy looks for a place to secure the ropes downstairs as well... perhaps he could tie the rope to the chains?!? Or the broken door? But there's nothing else here that he can use. Right now, the rope hangs loose. It takes the druid a couple of minutes to prepare the ropes during which the purple fumes draw dangerously close... you are by now all against the Northern wall and both chains on the ground are already covered by the smoke...

Alleah isn't too keen to provoke those chains just yet. She holds her ground and is affraid for the first one to go up. With a grin of pure mischief Sardok walks over to Alleah and 'encourages' her to go on... Alleah on her turn dramatically places the back of her hand to her forehead "My hero". Somehow the Humble's Sword seem to forget the grave peril they are in... two murderous chains are 'sleeping' beside them, this tower is in a seriously bad state and somewhere upstairs Bliss has faced a dragon statue with an attitude... something he hasn't received any credit for yet...

Hazel goes up first and takes Shel along. The two of them slowly climb their way up. Feeling Shel's body this close makes the ranger feel really uncomfortable and Shel commenting his strength doesn't help much...

Then Sardok, having fooled around with Alleah goes up, followed by her.

Murphy goes up last...
All the while, the chains don't move...

Taking 10's you are all able to climb up cautiously and after a few minutes you are all next to Bliss...

In front of you looms the Dragon...
Far away beneath you, in the dim light of the tower you can see the smoke filling the entire ground floor. You can no longer see the pavement, nor the chains.

Above you, oh, apart from the Dragon of course, you can spot a sturdy wooden door.

(Everyone please add 2000Xp (750Xp scene 1 + 1250 scene 2 - you folks have basically thrown 2 scenes together by splitting up :-) )

One by one you get up to a safe level away from the Chains. Shel is first to question Bliss about the fears Dragon... however she also urges speed as it's likely this place is going to fall apart soon... (she might be right you know... ) Alleah would rather go for another rounds with the Chains than facing a Dragon with a foul temper!

Hazel's out man of the action... he listens to the door, warns his friends to be cautious of any smoke that might come from the room beyond and then prepares to bash the door from it's hinges!!

"Whoa whoa whoa!, Alleah shouts hoping to stop Hazel from going berserk on the door... She has the ranger halt so she can first have a look at the door for potential traps. After all... this tower seems to hold a few already...

Murphy eager to hear Bliss's intell on the dragon. Of course the tiny witch is to hold some credit for her actions! He did hold his calm and solve the Dragon's riddle... seems he's granted them all access to the upper level of the tower. Somehow you get the feeling that that huge sphere the Dragon holds in it's maw would have come crashing down the spiral staircase if Bliss had it wrong... one can only imagine the massacre the rolling sphere would have caused, not mentionning the Chains that would have been really stressed by all those rolling down their stairs!!

Together Sardok and Alleah give a green light on the door...

So... Hazel pushes the door...

Immediately purple smoke comes rolling out of the chamber... 1,5ft high anyone smaller than 1,5ft (Bliss?) please roll a FORT DC15.

The room in front of you appears to be circular also... along the diameter windows probably give a fantastic view on the surroundings. From them, the purple smoke oozes down the Tower. You can not perceive the floor as it's completely covere in smoke... Some bookcases are positionned along the walls.

However it's the center of the room that draws your closest attention... A bright purple, violet, lavender spiralling... 'thing'... sphere perhaps?... no more an ellipsoide like disk... From it, the smoke flows on the floor...

With a perception bordering on pre-cognition, Sardok seems to hold his breath even before all is mist and smoke. I rolled a Fort sv = 21(!), but he's not that small, so nevermind. =)

'Well,' thinks Sardok, 'This is probably really, really dumb. But somebody has to run up and hit that thing. May as well be me.'

Sardok runs around the disk to the opposite side of the amazing flying Bliss. He swings his blades out and brings them down onto the disk, seeing if this can end the easy way....

Shel stares at the purple disk wondering if she recognizes it... The thing appears to be some kind of standing mirror... only something 3D shaped with what appears to be an infitite depth... (Shel spoiler Highlight to display spoiler: {You get the idea that this must be some kind of Portal!}

Taking care of the smoke Bliss casts a spell to enlarge the old Raven (that bird must go crazy... small, large, medium... sjeez!) and mounts to fly upon one of the bookcases to be found along the wall. He carefully checks the room but other than the shelves and the disk there's nut much else to be found.

Sardok... well... Sardok does what most would probably deem quite crazy... Alleah begins to raise her hand to stop him but reconsiders... Already she stopped Hazel from taking risks and now Sardok?!? Perhaps it's the only way he'll learn... Sardok runs around the disk, swings his blades and brings them down on the disk!! He is repelled by an incredible force and is thrown backwards against the bookcase opposite to Bliss!! (4HP damage)... he is then bombarded by a number of heavy tomes that come crashing down on his head... Additionally he's prone and immediately covered in fog... Sardok make a FORT DC15 please.

Murphy too hoped to stop Sardok but already the rogue is flying through the room and dissapears beneath the fog...

Hazel looks around worriedly... "Why there is no one around?".

Carefully he begins to move around feeling his way beneath the smoke... it doesn't take long before he hits his foot against something. Not hard... rather soft... was that a moan he heard?!

"Ok, I make out the words 'evil', 'portal', and 'demon'. It's probably too much to ask to think she said 'I destroyed the evil by opening a portal and killing the demon'?"

Alleah tears herself away from the bookshelf (she'll have to take a book later) and rushes to aid Tiana. As a first step, Alleah uses a Calming Touch on the poor woman (Heals 5pts non-lethal damage and removes the fatigued, shaken, and sickened conditions)

She does her best to try and determine if there is something more serious affecting the woman (Heal check to determine what might be wrong with Tiana: 13)

Sardok nods sagely at the woman's words. "Uh-hu. Okay, Portal Evil Demon, got that. But do you. Knoo-ow. How to. Close. It?"

If she doesn't respond promptly.

"Okay, guys, I know I've not been a font of great ideas today, but, see, we gotta go through that portal! We gotta go through, and, and, and we, then WE gotta slay that demon! Because the Third Luncheon Association, or whatever, probably tried, and failed, and now WE gotta go save them!

Leaving Sardok's side (I specified in my earlier post he had helped him back up), Murphy exclaims, "Tiana!" as Hazel helps her to her feet. Immediately following Alleah's ministrations to her, the druid touches her with his wand of cure light wounds, healing an additional 8 hp of damage. Hoping the positive energy helps her to clear her mind, Murphy asks for clarification. "So, Tiana, what was it that happened here? Do you know where Veseley and Bazeck might be?" He glances over at the rotating mirror, raising an eyebrow, and not yet commenting on Sardok's suggestion.

Bliss is awed. "Wowsy! That's quite a story! We better watch out!"

Mookie is sceptical. "Excuse me? it's a story in three words. An unlikely story. I think she'ss been sniffing too much wacky gas. See what she says after getting some medical attention!"

Bliss keeps a keen eye on watch (FOR DEMONS!) and also listens to the woman.

Most deduct the words 'Portal', 'evil' and 'demon'...
Before browsing any further through the books Alleah first concentrates on Tiana. The witxhes soothing words calm Tiana a little but don't seem to repair her mental state.

Sardok realises he hasn't actually displayed the most prudent ideas but he assumes the group will need to go through the portal... Wherever it leads to.

Leaving Sardok's side Murphy too tends to Tiana. He asks what has transpired here but the woman just stares into oblivion.

Bliss wants to hear what the woma has to say.

Shel once again states that she thinks to be able to activate the portal, however she waits for the group's approval.

carrying Tiana Hazel too looks rather quizickle towards the portal.

Even while Bliss encourages Shel to try to activate the portal Allrah wonders if the portal works both ways...

Suddenly more smoke oozes from the portal... Looking into it you see glimpses of a wonderful magical landscape. Shades of lilac and purple. A lavender moon casting playful shadows through the canopy of a mind blowing crystal forest.... The edges of the vision are blurry, but the rest is in High Definition!

Suddenly a beautiful young lass runs into view. The young lass has hazelnut shaped green eyes, high cheekbones and pointy ears. Her dress is torn, barely covering her feminine shapes... She appears to be running away.from something...the vision goes blurry...

Just as Shel intends to try and activate the portal someone else pops up from under the smoke. Anyone with some local knowledge will recognize him. Bazeck! Another mage from the second dinner's club!

"Who are you!! How did you get up here?? ... Tiana!! What hapened?? Where' Veseley?'"

As he notices Shel's intention he shouts :"STOP LASS!!! You'll only get yourself killed!! This portal is beyond you!!

Oh well... Help me find Veseley and here... Read this... Perhaps then you'll understand... We failed generating enough magical power in our tower... But I just knew the tremendous power of the Giant Tower would enable us to find the land described in this diary"


He hands you a couple of pages from a journal written by someone named Roderigo Montoya, Paladin of Alemi... Most of them seems to be shredded to pieces but a few intact pages attract your attention.


"My guide has proven as good as his word. Though I was loath to trust the word of a goblin it seems I was wrong to be so suspicious. He has indeed brought me to the foothills of this mysterious realm.

When I began my quest to bring the Holy Word of Alemi to the forsaken souls of these far-flung Realms I anticipated that I would encounter horror and evil. I had heard rumours that this place was a province, ruled by some terrifying witch, that the populace were brutal, savage servants of their dark mistress. Terror was expected. What I did not expect was to be met with such serene, still beauty.

This land is a marvel. Beneath her eternal lilac moon the Realm exists like some bewitching twilight dream, her palette of purples, blues and deep velvet blacks a soothing tonic to the mind. I don't ever recall having felt so calm.

Everything here is strange. The air carries countless wonderful musky aromas whose source I can only guess at. Crystalline outcroppings tower over still, mercurial pools. There are many curious moulds and fungi which seem to flourish in this half light, delicate and elaborate. I must collect some specimens to examine further. My guide, clearly a superstitious type, claims that the plant life here can move towards light! I am looking forward to learning more of the folktales of these simple, happy people.
That has been perhaps my greatest surprise. To find a community made up primarily of Goblins and Trolls living in peace, harmony and happiness! I would have never believed that such base creatures were capable of building such a successful community.

By all accounts they have their Queen to thank for their conversion to civilization. They speak of her in glowing, even loving terms, and I am looking forward to meeting with her. The horror stories I was told are quite clearly the tall tales of the ignorant. After rest I shall visit her Palace. I am certain that with reasoned persuasion and pure heart she will prove a powerful convert to Great Alemi's cause."

Murphy's Synopsis

"A paladin of Alemi, Roderigo Montoya, traveled the far lands. Anticipating brutal horror and savage evil ruled over by a terrible witch, he instead found serene, still beauty, a calm, and amazing flora and crystals. He found goblins and trolls living in peace and harmony, who speak in glowing terms of adoration of their queen.

"My thoughts are - it may be as Roderigo said, or he may have been deceived, or found a dark thread at first unseen. But these words of mine are speculation." Then he notices that two of his - three of his friends have attempted to travel through into the spinning mirror.

Murphy's query

He asks Bazeck with urgency, "Tell me quickly how you opened the portal, and how and whether one might return after entering. What are the instruments? And is there something from here we should take with us for knowledge or help should we follow our friends within?"

"You there! Bazeck! Take this poor woman from the tower and get her some help. Tell Broker Iangold Laughshield that Alleah sent you. He should be able to help" Alleah is in a rush now. She'd dearly like to see the woman treated properly, but there is no time to waste.

If Bliss and Sardok make it through the portal, Alleah will follow.
