The Nasty One

DM Kathy
Sunday March 8th, 2015 9:14:18 PM

You distribute magic items and discuss strategy. You have a pretty good one for when you find the undead.

Of course, first you actually have to find the undead. [OOC: I need some kind of skill check here. Survival for tracks, or Perception to notice stuff, or Knowledge checks, or something.] Also, you might want to arrange yourselves to best advantage. [OOC: If you don't give me a marching order, I get to put you on the map wherever I want. Bwa-ha-ha-ha!]

[Final OOC: According to the rules for spell preparation, a wizard with an unused spell slot can spend 15 minutes preparing a spell for that slot. I'm going to rule that, when Avin leveled up, he acquired a brand-new, unused spell slot, which he could take 15 minutes to fill. And you had at least 15 minutes waiting for the others to return from the Catacombs. So, go ahead and fill that slot!]

Ashley Steward [AC: 17, Touch: 10, Flat: 17, HP 22/22]
Sunday March 8th, 2015 9:19:50 PM

"Var, Roy, since you're probably our best trackers, you all will take the lead. I'll be behind you so that it doesn't take me too long to get into position once we find this thing. Wilford, I imagine you're more effective when one of us will have the thing distracted, so let's stick together for the big one. Talanthrel, do you mind taking rear guard?"

Ashley addresses the positioning of the more up close fighters, but leaves any matters or magic and sorcerous strategy to those more suited to that planning.

[OOC: I have been forgetting to limit Ashley's movement to 20 ft. due to his heavy armor. I apologize for not catching that sooner.]

Var takes a deep breath, catching the faintest hint of the nearby ocean over the smells of the city, and begins the hunt.

Keeping his eyes on the ground and his ears open, he strains to find either abnormal tracks in the muddy streets, or cries of distress over the sounds of the city settling in for the night (Perception: 15, Survival(Tracking): 14). He makes a conscious effort to keep his movements as quiet and controlled as possible (Stealth: 8) but he finds that being moving unnoticed in the city is very different than in the wilds.

Roy also begins to starting looking Trying to recall where exactly they were headed (knowledge geography; NATURAL 1) gets dumbfounded for a brief few seconds. Roy then decides to follow near var about 20 feet to his left. Now with a direction to go Roy starts checking for tracks that would be unusual in a city street (survival = 15). Roy puts a little bit more effort into listening (perception = 18) for any kind of screams or shouts.

Talanthrel (Paul) [HP 21/21; AC 17; Touch 14; Flat 13; Cmd17]  d20+5=15 ;

Talanthrel nods at Var and moves to the back of the party. After makeing sure his weapons are secure and his Bow is in hand, he opens his senses for any threats to the party. (Perception 1D20+5=15)

Before either Var or Roy begin tracking Toston casts the Toros Taur Try cantrip on both of them choosing the centaur version(OOC: +2 to survival rolls for 10 minutes so Roy actually got a 17 and Var actually got a 16 . "Trust me, this'll make you track things better, like a centaur." Toston says to the elf and half-orc rangers.

Toston then casts the Minotaur version on himself, Ashley, Broom, Avin, Wil, and Talanthrel. (OOC: +1 to perception and intimidate for 10 minutes) "This'll make us slightly more perceptive and intimidating, like a minotaur."

Toston tries to keep his now magically enhanced senses keen to anything that may indicate the presence of 'the nasty one' or other undead (Perception: 20) and he wracks his gnome brain for anything he can remember relating to the undead and their preferences in lairs (Knowledge[Religion]:20)

Once 10 minutes have expired Toston will recast the spells on the party members and continue to do so until they find their quarry.

Active Effects: Toros Taur Try = +1 Perception and Intimidate for 10 minutes

Avin Fellows HP:16/17 AC:13 Flat:10  d20+1=13 ;
Monday March 9th, 2015 8:50:30 PM

Following the rangers, Avin remains just behind Ashley with one of the scrolls from Boggs in hand. Aided by the gnome's newfound magic he keeps an eye out for signs of the undead (perception:13). With the hilt of a dagger in his palm, Avin makes a mental note to ask one of the others to give him a few fighting tips.

Wilford Grimly (HP:18/18; AC: 14; Touch: 12; Flat: 12; CMD: 14)
Monday March 9th, 2015 9:19:25 PM

Wil hangs back slightly from the leaders. He will need to work fast in order to set the trap. His prepared jars of oil bang together as his steps forward. His amulet sits new the bottom of the bag so Wil is startled when the whispers begin. "The sorcerer's apprentice..." a voice begins then fades. Another whisper slithers through his head then fades away. "enemy...," Says a third voice as the final syllables fade slowly.
"Wilford!" shouts a familiar as his mother interrupts. "Mother!" Wil shouts as he jumps. "This is not a good time." He continues in a whisper. He looks at the group as they watch for danger. They seem preoccupied. "Mother, I'm not wearing the amulet. What is going on?"
"I'm sorry Wilford. Sounds to me like your power to hear the dead has transcended the amulet. "What do you mean?"
"Wil, my boy. The amulet is just a tool. It holds no magical powers. You are the medium now."
"Great," he whispers through his teeth. "All this time I was so happy I could turn it off. Now you tell me I can't. What am I going to do now?"
"You will have to learn to manage the voices Wil."
"Thanks, mother your a gem."
"I didn't give these powers to you." Wil's mother then faded away and he was left with barely audible whispers.

DM Kathy

You place yourselves in order--the rangers in front, Ashley backing them up, Talanthrel bringing up the rear. Toston some cantrips to help you in your tasks, and then you set out.

The day had been rainy and overcast; it had never been all that light to begin with. Now the light is fading fast. The trackers have a hard time picking up the tracks of the undead you seek, and the fact that it rained all morning does not make their task any easier.

Plus, Wilford is talking to people who aren't there again.

At last, however, the rangers seem to have a direction to go in. And as you move that way, many of you begin to hear noises you are both listening for and dreading: shuffling feet, low groans, and the occasional shriek of townsfolk caught unaware. You hurry in that direction.

You round a building in a muddy yard, and there they are: three fleshy undead. They see you and begin to close in....

Here is your map. Note: the entire battlefield is dim light. Var and Broom can see just fine, thanks to their racial darkvision, but for everyone else, ranged attacks have a 20% miss chance. Also, I didn't copy over the "key" from previous maps; hopefully you'll all remember which one is your character.

Talanthrel (Paul) [HP 21/21; AC 17; Touch 14; Flat 13; Cmd17]  d20+5=11 ; d8=2 ;
Monday March 9th, 2015 10:47:56 PM

Talanthrel squints as he peers thru the dim light, his half elven heritage usually allows him to see better in the dim light. But I does not seem to be helping him here. Still he has a target, raising his bow he fires a arrow at the nearest undead. (11 vs AC, Dmg 2) Not liking his chance to hit the undead reasonably often he then puts up his bow and prepares to draw his sword.

Seeing the fleshy undead, Ashley surveys the battlefield the best that he can. Seeing only three of them, he takes a few steps forward, but doesn't rush ahead too far.

"Let them come to us! Remember what happened when we split up last time."

Ashley moves out to spearhead the loose formation they had made, his attention focused mainly on the particularly gruesome looking undead in the middle. He is waiting to make his move, not wanting for their group to get spread out too thinly. He still remembers how close ti was with Var and Avin last time.

"Wilford! Get ready to flank that big one with me. Talanthrel! Put that twig thrower away and get up here!"

Ashley grins at the last comment, waiting for the formations to be made.

Talanthrel fires a shot, but it flies wide. Whether the lighting conditions are to blame or not, he decides to switch weapons.

Ashley advises caution, warning his companions not to get too spread out. He moves into position, calling suggestions to his friends.

Broom prepares to attack with his fists.

Wilford loads his crossbow and pulls out one of his prepared oil flasks. [OOC: Yes, that would be all the actions you could take this round. You're getting the hang of this! :) ]

Var fires a shot, then takes a step back. His arrow seems to do full damage, which must come as something of a relief at this point.

Toston moves up and casts a spell.

Roy fires a shot that hits his target. His arrow, too, seems to do full damage.

And then the undead move up. Their flesh is rotting and putrid, their bodies skeletal in places and their eye sockets glowing with red light. The one Roy wounded approaches Var and slams its rotted arms at the ranger, but misses entirely.

The slightly more menacing-looking one, the one Var wounded, approaches Ashley. "Join my gang," it whispers, and slams at the fighter. It, too, misses.

The last of the three moves up to Toston, but it had to double-move so cannot make an attack.

Quick reminder: these are a Knowledge: Relgion check. Roy can make the check untrained because undead are his Favored Enemy.

"No deal mate, my crew knows how to bathe!"

Ashley swings his sword into the big nasty, and hits the one beside it on the backhand. Both creatures reel, and seem very injured.

Talanthrel charges, but mistimes his attack.

Toston lashes out with his fists, and connects. He quickly realizes that these creatures are wights.

Roy fires a shot that doesn't quite seem to penetrate the creature's flesh.

Var's shot, however, is dead on. Pun intended. The big nasty drops to the muddy ground.

Weirdly, though, its death seems to breathe new life--or maybe new undeath--into the other two. Their eye sockets glow a little redder.

Broom rushes up and kicks at one of them, but his foot does not connect.

Avin casts a spell to protect Ashley.

Wilford fires his crossbow, but the bolt sails wide of its target. [OOC: Your ranged attack bonus is +3. I'll send you an email.]

One of the wights attacks Ashley, but misses. The other steps closer to its compatriot, and attacks Toston. It hits! Its undead fists slam into Toston's head, doing 5 damage. Worse yet, the creature drains some of Toston's energy. Toston is now the proud owner of one negative level.

Avin grips Ashley's arm and with a peculiar certainty looked the fighter in the eye.

"Never listen to the dead," the wizard says with uncommon clarity. "Nothing good comes of it. The dead should not speak, it is not the natural order. Their words are as hollow and repulsive as they are."

His piece said, the wizard shuffles to examine the make of these undead [religion: 21] and the value and any possessions about their person [appraise: 17]. All the while he grumbles about what he refers to as 'wight blight.'

"Wil claims to listen to them." Toston says to Avin, "Are you saying nothing good can come of his gift?"

Toston then proceeds to shoot rays of positive energy via the disrupt undead cantrip at each of the Wights remains. Toston focuses on 'the nasty one' first, lining up five rays of positive energy, one at a time(24 damage total) at its head, before moving onto the one that drained his life force, doing the same(14 damage) and lastly the wight(17 damage) that had been farthest from him in battle.

"I hate to break it to you gentlemen, but that wand may be able to close my wounds but it can't restore my energy. If I am not able tough it out tomorrow, the only way to restore my life force will be to find a strong enough cleric to cast a specific restorative spell on me."
(OOC: I've done the math and that carries a 1280 gold price tag)

Var pulls out the wand and heals Toston's damage. [OOC: Yes, we always re-roll 1s on healing spells.]

All of you spend some extra time making sure the wights are really, truly, dead. Well, they were dead before. You spend time making sure they're not going to get up and come after you again.

Ashley is a little freaked out that one of the wights spoke to him, so Avin gives the matter some thought. Avin realizes that most of the undead you have fought so far have been mindless, but the wights have enough intelligence to speak. You also realize that the flesh undead you fought before, Var's "tough zombies," are called Ghouls.

Roy suggests finding the wights' lair, which could contain treasure--and the DM didn't even have to prompt you for that, so well done. :)

Between them, Roy and Var can easily find the wights' lair. It rained this morning, so there is plenty of nice soft mud to show the wights' tracks. The tracks cross a muddy yard and end at a ramshackle shed.

It's unclear what the shed was used for before it became a wight hideout. It could have held tools, or feed, or it could have been used to dry fish. All that remains is the smell of death. And a small pile of items.

You find a wand, three scrolls, two potions, a feather, and two pearls.

Var is a little disappointed in the small pile of treasure, and Broom's sharp eyes scan for more. This would seem to be it, however.

So, Roy and Talanthrel keep watch while the spellcasters take a look.

Avin is able to determine that the wand is a Wand of Stabilize, a useful item that nobody in the party could use now without a Use Magic Device check. The first scroll contains Bear's Endurance, and luckily it is the arcane version, so Avin or Toston could cast it with a caster-level check. The second scroll is a scroll of Mount, which Avin or Toston could use without a caster-level check. The third scroll appears to be clerical in nature, a Conjuration spell of some kind that Avin is not able to identify. [OOC: but if you cast Read Magic you can just read it.] Avin isn't sure about the first potion, but the second one is Shield of Faith. The feather is magical, but Avin is not able to tell more than that. The pearls are not magical, but are worth about 100 gold each.

Wilford, meanwhile, tries his hand at creating a staff, but perhaps working with still-damp wood in pitch darkness isn't the best way to go about it. At any rate, he is unsuccessful this time.

You decide that your best course of action is to burn the bodies.

You do need to use all the oil; the ground is still wet, and the corpses do not burn easily. You get the blaze going at last, though, and after ensuring that you won't accidentally set Grubbertown on fire, you head back to your various lodgings.

Ashley begins to wander off as their group disperses, noting in particular that Var and Broom are going to try to seek refuge from the drunken priest.

"If Elthorn lets you down, I'm crashing at an inn in Moontown."

With that being settled, at least in his opinion, the large human makes his way towards Moontown, keeping a wary eye out for anyone foolish enough to take him on in a dark alleyway.

[Perception: 12]

Assuming he makes it to his temporary dwelling near the docks unharried, Ashley makes his way into a seedy tavern and inn, a place he was quite familiar with. He always came here for the first few days he was back in town from a job. Mostly, because he could afford it at that point, but he also didn't relish going back to his own domicile. He lived in the Backstab Quarter, officially, and at the moment, he was simply too tired to deal with the particular way of life in that section of Dirt City. Instead, he strides into the tavern, taking a seat by the fire to warm himself. When the server comes to his table, he places a silver on the table, ordering an ale with the instruction to keep them coming, and another instruction that he would settle the price of the room later in the night. He sat by himself, idly wondering if Var and Broom would be joining him, or if the Cleric of Ffloy would be hospitable to his wayward companions. He chuckled to himself at the prospect of either outcome. Ashley doesn't speak much to anyone but his server, and that is mostly ordering drinks. He had a penchant for listening, however, to the tales of the other sailors that would be staying until their next voyage. Eventually, he knew he would have to go back to his own home. But for now, he preferred the solitude of not dealing with his family.

After getting the wizard's reply Toston then makes his way to Paul Fisher's fishing boat, Jenny. He tries to keep an eye out for any hazards the city above may offer and moves stealthily to avoid them.
(Perception: 12)
(Stealth: 22)

The boat wasn't the most ideal place for him to spend the night, but it was the best option he had open to him considering his current lack of coin. Toston currently had 5 copper pieces to his name and that was not enough for a night's stay at even the poorest of lodgings. Toston had stayed at several inns in Dirt City since arriving. With his quest to improve things underway he wanted to be careful so he moved from inn to inn staying for up to a few days, paying by the day, and not really following a pattern. It helped when all one's belongings could fit in a pack on one's back.

Toston had spent the night on Paul's boat before and with his blanket and bedroll it wasn't that bad. The only drawback was that sometimes Paul would show up at the dock's early and if he found Toston sleeping on his boat he would usually want to go out as soon as possible. Toston didn't think Paul minded him sleeping on his boat. In fact he thought the man probably preferred it. Toston had an inkling that Paul knew there was more to the gnome than met the eye and Toston suspected that Paul probably thought he had someone protecting his property for free when Toston spent the night there.

Paul's boat was 16 feet long and had a single mast. It didn't have a cabin and the small hold smelt heavily of fish so when Toston had to bed down on the boat he usually just slept on deck, curling up in a little ball in his bedroll at the foot of the mast. The gnome did just that on this night.

This job was a bit uncomfortable sometimes but it was something steady unlike the jobs before. Outside of these houses Wil had the Dart family homes. His family still owned a couple homes but it would be awkward. "Of course Wil is supposed to be dead and showing up at a house that was reacquired by the family would be the end of Wil. "At the Trading Company then."

Nodding absently at the gnome, Avin makes his own way through the streets now aided by lamplight. Too exhausted to work for a night in a real bed he resigns himself for the alternative. Winding his way through Moontown he reaches an inn on the edge of Grubbertown. Covering the lamplight he slips into the adjacent stables hoping for the best.

A fortunate understanding with the kindly owners of the inn permitted the wizard to use an empty stall himself if it was unoccupied. He preferred working for a bed but the stale straw would do in a pinch. Few of the stalls were in use this night and Avin slips into one that has been undisturbed. The straw, while not fresh, remained clean. Using his pack as a crude and rough pillow, the wizard drapes his cloak over him like a small blanket and works his feet out of his shoes before unconsciousness claims him.
