Mission Accomplished

DM Kathy
Wednesday March 18th, 2015 11:02:19 PM

[Everybody take 900 XP for the last scene.]

You go your separate ways, having decided to meet up at the Trading Company offices in the morning.

Many of you seem to be homeless, which is a dangerous proposition with the Knives patrolling the streets.

Still, you find places to lay your heads. Toston curls up on a friend's boat, which he can always claim to be guarding. Avin, thanks to a standing arrangement, spends the night in a stable. Ashley heads for a favorite tavern, and Talanthrel goes to the inn where he is staying.

Broom, Var, and Wilford return to the temple of Ffloy to ask a night's shelter from Brother Elthorn. You find him passed out, drunk, again. Since he isn't awake enough to object, you spread your bedrolls in the chapel and sleep there. There's an awkward scene the next morning, but he is very pleased to learn that the undead will no longer be a problem.

The next morning you meet up, as scheduled. Toston had asked Avin to prepare a specific cantrip, Resistance, and to attempt to cast the Scroll of Bear's Endurance on Toston, so he could overcome the lingering effects of the wight's touch.

Whether Avin prepares Resistance or not, however, the scroll is party treasure. Is everybody okay with using it on Toston?

Regardless, I will need that all-important Fort save from Toston, and a caster-level check from Avin if he tries to activate the scroll.

Upon arriving at the temple of Ffloy Var is somewhat surprised to see that Will had been silently following him, but gives the young man a smile and a nod as they make themselves as comfortable as the can on the chapel's floor. Before bedding down for the night, Var makes a few notes in his journal:

Striking out 'tough zombies' Var puts down "Ghoul"
Adds a new section for "Wight: kinda like a vampire? messed up the gnome pretty good, drained some of his life."
"Holy Water: hurts 'em, but not as much as you'd think."

In the morning Var explains the evening's happenings to the confused and hung-over Brother Elthorn. Packing his bedroll and journal, he makes his way back to the Crescent Moon Trading Company, and waits in the meeting room for the rest of the party.

As the party filters in, and the discussion turns to the divying up of loot, Var says "That scroll should be used to help Toston regain his strength. That's worth more to us in the long run than any gold we could sell it for."

Ashley wakes up in his room at the tavern, having to get his bearings as to where he is. Once he realizes that he is in a relatively safe place, the tall human gets ready for the day, taking the time to don his armor, adjust his weapons belts, and situate his gear. Once he is dressed for the day, he heads down to the main tavern, where he orders another ale and some eggs to start the day. The other sailors said something about the hair of the dog that bit them; all Ashley knew was that he was hungover as usual, and needed an ale to tide him over. With his breakfast and alcohol consumed, the fighter headed for the Crescent Moons. When he arrives, he is still somewhat groggy, and any of his companions paying close enough attention can see that Ashley is still recovering, or smell the smell of ale upon him. Regardless, he takes a seat in their meeting room, nodding in agreement to Var's suggestion.

"The gnome's shown his worth."

Broom (HP 20/20, AC17/T17/FF14)
Thursday March 19th, 2015 10:57:52 AM

Broom groan as he finally managed to get himself up from the hard stony floor - he really misses the comfort of a soft plushy bed.

The beardless dwarf spend the rest of the morning massaging his aching muscles - it has been years since he had much physical activities.

He is not so concerned with the scroll or whatever, although Toston does seem a little pale in the face - maybe some reading would do him good.

Thursday March 19th, 2015 3:55:59 PM

Wil wakes up and finds himself under one of the chapel pews. His body hurts as he stretches. He recalls with less and less clarity the comfort of a bed. He spent several of his younger years in a large comfortable bed but his father had fallen out of favor of the head of the family and eventually the Prince. The morning of the tragedy Wil's mother had taken Wil from the house and they walked to the market.
Wil found within an hour that he was lost. It was the last time he saw his parents alive. His mother still checks in a few times a day, within his head, but his father was unavailable.
Wil stood. The chapel had not changed. The priest lay unconscious within the doorway of his office.
Broom and Var mills around complaining about his muscle aches. "We should head out, I guess." He said.

Avin Fellows HP:17/17 AC:13 Flat:10 Touch:13  d20+2=21 ;
Thursday March 19th, 2015 4:22:36 PM

Avin is still popping his knuckles and other joints when he shows up to the Trading Company. He flexes his fingers in small exercises as his mind adjusts to the weight of the spells in his mind. Fresh and more bountiful than he's ever managed before, the weight of them makes the wizard smile. It's not a pleasant sight.

Nodding in agreement with the majority of the group, Avin prepares to cast upon the gnome. Reaching out, he first lays a spell of Resistance upon Toston before pulling out the scroll. With a brief look Avin manages to work out the missing component (caster check: 21). The wizard waves a hand through the air and calls out to activate the scroll which burns in a heatless flame leaving behind not even ash as Avin directs the endurance spell upon Toston.

With his part complete, Avin allows himself a tinge of remorse for not having the time to copy the spell into his spellbook before consuming it but feeling triumphant in his use of magic. It had been too long since he could be proud of his work.

Toston tries to resist the life draining effect of the wight's attack becoming permanent. (DC 13 vs DC 14 = fail...) but despite the preparation of having resistance and Bear's Endurance it isn't enough.

Toston feels a part of him slowly dying but then remembers the words of his master, Reginald D. Faust after one particularly grueling training session that ended with Toston passing out from shear exhaustion a mere minute before Master Faust would have ended it "Sometimes despite your best effort, you fail just short and it is how one reacts to that failure that tells people about your character. Do you collapse under the weight of that failure of do you endure and learn from it? A hero learns. A hero endures."

"I have learned and endured." Toston says out loud and with a force of will inspired by the memory of his master's words, he is able to successfully stave off any lingering effects from the wight's fell slam. (OOC: ... 1 hero point spent to add +2 retroactively to the fort save making the save actually 15 vs DC 14 = success)

(Active Effects: [i]Bear's Endurance[i] : +4 con; 3 minutes, [i]resistance[i] +1 all saves; 1 minute)

Talanthrel enjoyed a quite evening at the Inn he had been staying at for the last couple of weeks and after a good nights sleep and a hearty breakfast went to meet the others at the pre arranged meeting. Arriving at the meeting room he gave a cheerful "Good morning!' to those already arrived.

DM Kathy
Friday March 20th, 2015 12:35:08 AM

You all get a decent night's rest, although some sleep better than others. Var is able to find time to jot a few more notes in his log.

In the morning, you meet in front of the Crescent Moons office. Yesterday's wind has died down, but the sky is overcast and seems to be gathering itself to drench Dirt City all over again.

Toston is still looking pale and shaky from yesterday's encounter with the wights. Avin casts a cantrip to help him, and, with the consent of the group, casts a spell from the scroll to make Toston a bit hardier, if only temporarily. And, as it turns out, Toston needed every bit of that help, plus a little of his own heroism besides. In the end, though, he is able to shake off the effects and feel more like himself again.

You (I assume) head in to the office at that point. Madri Brightside still presides over the front room, and gives you a big smile. "For Mr. Boggs?" she asks. "I'll see if he's available." She does not leave her post, but rings a little bell and holds a brief conversation with the human lad who comes out to answer it. A short time later, you are seated in the same conference room you were in--was it only yesterday?--facing Abel Boggs.

"First, I wanted to let you know that I put your associate Gilmek on a special assignment," he says. "One suited to his uinque abilities. We'll try to find a new member for your group soon."

"There's a lot of talk in Grubbertown," he continues with a faint smile. "I'm not sure how much of it to believe. Please, give me your report."

Toston relates the story of the undead hunt to Boggs,
"We started by splitting off after you first called us here. We eventually found ourselves at a cemetery run by Brother Elthorn, a drunkard and cleric of Ffloy. We had a run in with some zombies, which we were able to dispatch. After some persuading we were able to get the priest to open up about the undead problem. It turns out he didn't have to resources to make his cemetery hallowed and his consecration ritual had lapsed. Unfortunately he was out of powdered silver so we ventured to talk to you when we happened upon a group of undead consisting of skeletons and ghouls. We also took care of them then met with you in the Scrum. After leaving the scrum we procured some silver and then returned to Elthorn. He used the ritual to consecrate the cemetery and then told us about this undead known as the 'Nasty One.' We were eventually able to find him and his 2 gang members and also take them out. The 'Nasty One' and his gang were wights and after defeating them we burned their remains. We then went our separate ways for the night and met up here today. I know that you want us to keep a low profile and I think we should let it be known that Brother Elthorn took care of the undead problem. I know he is a sot, but maybe if he got a little appreciation he would clean up his act and people in this city would hold Ffloy in higher regard? I kind of feel bad for the guy even if he is a curmudgeon. Maybe if he had a little help he would be a better person?"

Wil stood near the back of the room. He fiddled with his daggers within his cloak. Voices whispered in his head till his mother returned. "Wilford, that hatred filled voice is some poor grubber that was killed by Jerod, the Wicked."
"I recall him," Wil said quietly. "That man nearly killed me months ago. I remember he was really tall. I took out his legs and he fell to his death. I don't remember well though because I was drunk."
"Well, that's another issue..," said his mother. "Anyways, the poor man is a little upset because you failed to save him."
"It wasn't my fault," Wil pleaded. "What was his name?"
"Alexander."
"Ok, thanks mother."
Wil suddenly noticed that Roy was gone. "What happened to the Red-headed companion?" he asked.

"I doubt this is a single incident. The corpses were smart enough to talk, so they were probably organized in some way."

Scratching at his chin, Avin contemplates Talanthrel's suggestion. A proper residence would certainly be safer if the group was at risk of gaining attraction. Better than risking a new room every night.

"Where do we go from here, Mr. Boggs?" Wil asks as he steps forward from the back of the room. "The Scary One was the man of the hour for this mission. Do you think someone else could of possibly sent this beast to GrubberTown. With my history from the Dart family it's certainly possible that someone is behind the surge in undead or it could just be Mr. Ugly One."

Boggs listens to your report, asks a few questions, nods at your answers.

"You've done what I sent you to do," he says, "and in only a day. Well done."

"This Brother Elthorn may be an opportunity. I'll see what can be done there. In the meantime," he slides a leather bag across the table. "Here are some resources that just became available. I think you can use them."

"We'll look into the question of how the undead arose," he continues, "but since the ground has been re-consecrated, we probably won't see any more, at least for now." He takes his leave and exits the room, leaving you with the bag of "resources."

The bag itself is magical, which you can tell from a Detect Magic, or deduce when you start pulling things out of it. Inside is a masterwork sling, a masterwork kama, two masterwork daggers, a masterwork longbow, a masterwork Elven curved blade, a masterwork greatsword, and a wand.

Ashley listens to Boggs and the others talk, standing up when the resources are pulled out of the bag. Ashley looks impressed at the bag, but is more interested in the greatsword that was pulled out of it. Standing up, the recovering fighter picks up the large sword, pulling it halfway out of its scabbard. Admiring the quality, a small smile comes upon the tall human's face.

"If no one objects."

He motions to the sword, sliding it back into its sheath. Considering the one he's currently using, the one out of the bag is of a much better quality. But his attention returns to lodging, especially at Toston's idea.

"Aye, a ship would be useful. Something we could make some coin with, too. Though, not the safest while in port. We should look into finding a single lodging, it'll be much easier to explain a group claiming a place for Crescent Moons business than it is to be so conspicuous as all of us having seperat places, yet always working together."

DM Kathy
Monday March 23rd, 2015 10:18:06 PM

You examine the gear. The sling is Medium-sized; the kama is Small-sized. [OOC: there is supposed to be a masterwork weapon for everyone, based on the weapons you have listed on your character sheets. So, I put the sling in for Broom, the kama for Toston, one of the daggers for Wilford, and the other dagger for Avin, and I really hope you can figure the rest out. :) That doesn't mean that those people are required to claim those weapons; that's just what was intended.]

Avin is able to tell that the wand is a Wand of Cure Light Wounds. So now you have two!

At the moment, you can't tell what the magic bag is, other than it is clearly a magic bag that can hold mor than it looks like. Eventually, you learn that it is a Type 1 Bag of Holding.

You are interested in finding a place to live, which is quite do-able. Your first step should probably be to sort through your collected treasure, figure out what you have, figure out who is claiming what, and figure out how much you have left over to procure lodging.

Toston is trying to travel as light as possible and having 2 kamas despite one being of superior quality and the other being of a special substance seems inefficient. As soon as the loot is divided up and he has more coin, he resolves to head back to the catacombs to sell his cold iron kama and mundane siangham and buy a cold iron siangham.

To Var he says, "good idea," sheathes the kama and exits the room heading out to the reception area. To Madri he says, "Miss Brightside, maybe you could help my companions and I. We are looking for some sort of group lodging and wondering if you might recommend us a place that is affordable and secure. If you want, for role-play purposes to take them somewhere and convert them to coin, you can, but that isn't necessary and you certainly don't need to take them to the Catacombs. I made you play it out with the jewelry because there was a time factor, but there really isn't one now; you can just say "yeah, we did that." Also, you're still at CMTC; they can cash out those pearls for you if you like.]

Regardless of how your transactions shake out, you do know you'll have some coin to spend on lodging, if you want to do that. Later that day, you return to Madri Brightside, who hands you a slip of paper with an address written on it. "Meet Mr. Cother here," she says.

The address is for something called "Marsh House" in Dockside. Those of you familiar with Dockside don't recall seeing the place--and it's no wonder. When you finally find it, you see it's right on the edge of the city, sitting amid overgrown bushes, with only a few scattered houses nearby for neighbors. The house itself is--wow. Very unusual. After staring at it for a bit, you can pick out the original structure--a rather modest, straightforward, square stone house. But it's been bulit on, and added to, and expanded, with little apparent regard for aesthetics, or convenience, or even the laws of physics. Its a confusing jumble of mis-matched styles and oddly-placed additions.

It's pretty big, though, and seems to be in good repair. Standing in front of the house is a human man, stoop-shouldered, white-haired, but with a youthful face. "Good afternoon," he says, shaking your hands. "Lem Cother. I represent the owners of Marsh House, who are making it available for rent. We're asking 40 gold per month, furnished. Let me show you the inside."

He leads the way up a short stone walk, and up two stone steps, to the front door, which he opens with a key. The front door leads into a great room, with a good-sized fireplace, and a large table for meals. Soft rugs cover the floor, and comfortable-looking chairs are clustered near the fireplace. Upright chairs and a bench provide seating for the eating table. None of these things can be said to exactly match, but none of them clash, either. It's a homey kind of room.

Opposite the front door, another door leads back into a kitchen. It is clean and bright, with a flagstone floor and a wood-burning cookstove. A door in the side wall leads to a large pantry; nearby, another door leads to a small bedroom, furnished with a cot and clothespress.

"That's intended for a servant's room," Cother explains, looking into the room.

The great room, kitchen, pantry, and servant's room seem to be all that's left of the original structure. Once you go through other doors and move away from them, the architecture becomes decidedly eccentric. Stairways lead up, only to head back down again. There are halls that go nowhere, and little rooms that don't seem to have any particular function--or maybe they were changed when the next addition got built on; it's hard to tell.

However, there are also four good-sized bedrooms, and one really big bedroom, which is already furnished with two beds large enough to sleep Taurs. There is storage space, and there is a mostly-enclosed porch, with mosquito bar over the exposed areas, which might appeal as a sleeping space to the more outdoorsy members of the party.

"I know the design is a bit...odd," Cother says. "But the construction is sound, the roof is solid, and as you can see, there's plenty of space. Do you have any questions for me?"

Toston found the house intriguing...it certainly was eclectic and he wondered if maybe it was built by a gnome architect after all.

Even though this guy was referred by Madri, Toston wanted to make sure the actual realtor hadn't been jumped and this guy was some imposter ( Sense Motive: 14; Perception 14). Assuming the guy isn't an imposter he also wants to make sure this guy is giving them a fair price on rent (Sense Motive : 14)

(OOC: Forgive me Kathy; I have been reading too much of Kim, Cayzle and Rob)
Toston then starts peppering Cother with questions as gnomes are a curious lot and the house has piqued Toston's interest, "Mr. Cother, I too have many questions. What is the building's provenance? Who built it? Why? Are there any interesting stories concerning the residence? Is it Haunted? Who are the current owners? Why are they renting the place out? Do they have any enemies among the houses or otherwise that might show up thinking we are they and attack us? Is it possible to see the blueprints? Does the residence have any mundane defenses? Does the residence have any magical defenses? Who is responsible for repairing damage to the property due to acts of the Woldian Pantheon or Gods of Testing should that happen? Who is responsible for repairing fire, acid, ice, electric or sonic damage to the property should that happen? Who is responsible for repairing flood damage to the property should that happen? Who is responsible for the cost to repairs caused by Hurricanes,Tornadoes, Volcanoes or Earthquakes should any happen? Do you have a contract with the terms of the rental agreement? May we have some time to read the contract? Does the residence have any secret passageways or hidden compartments? Are there any code violations that you are aware of that need to be taken care of? Would that fall to us or to you and the owners to get this place up to code? If there is a problem with the kitchen or some other facet of the home, stuck door, et cetera, is it for us to fix or is there some superintendent we may reach out to? How much notice do we have to give when we opt to stop renting? How should we contact you if we wish to stop renting? Is there a rent to own option? How much would that cost? Is there a deposit? Is there some way we can note anything we find wrong with the place ahead of time, before we rent it so that if there is any issue at the end of our rental period it is evident what was like that when we got it and what we may have caused ourselves? Is there any rule prohibiting the hanging of paintings? Are pets allowed? What are the neighbors like? Have there been any murders or other violent crimes that have occurred on the grounds of the property? Does it have a basement or attic?"

(Sense Motive: 15 on the answers to the questions)

DM Kathy
Thursday March 26th, 2015 10:51:33 PM

Your reactions to the house vary, from Broom, who thinks the rent is outright highway robbery, to Var, who can barely contain his excitement.

Var has a look outside. You quickly recognize blackberry--lots and lots of blackberry. There also seems to be a privet or two, and another bush, nearly subsumed by blackberry brambles--that may be a lilac. You also reconize bog laurel, and there is a patch of deadly nightshade. (And before everyone gets all excited, deadly nightshade is basically a weed.)

Avin asks about beds. [OOC: The bedrooms do each have at least one bed; I'm sorry if that wasn't clear. I actually have a longer description of the house, but I'm holding off on it because I don't want my DM posts to be too long to read.] Cother says, "well, if you need additional beds, you could simply procure them yourselves and move them in. You seem to be a group of good, sturdy fellows. Most of you," he adds, eyeing Avin's scrawny arms dubiously. "Or, I could arrange to have beds brought in if you would prefer."

Ashley asks about the owners, and who else has seen the place. "The owner is Mr. Shayl. He is retired now, but he was an attorney. I believe several of the Houses availed themselves of his services, but he was careful never to ally with any of them. He and Mrs. Shayl have a grown daughter, who lives in Rum, and a grown son, who is a priest of Wardd at the temple here in town." Cother pauses a moment, thinking. "I've shown the property to probably a dozen people," he says, "trying to find a tenant. It isn't something most people want. Most people want something smaller, and the ones who want something this big can usually afford something more....usual. Or something in the City Below."

But Ashley's questions are nothing compared to Toston's. "The house was originally built by an ancestor of Mr. Shayl's," Cother says, with the air of somebody desperately trying to keep up. "It is said that he--the ancestor--was a founding member of one of the Houses, though rumors differ on which one it was, and Mr. Shayl doesn't like to speak of it. He--the ancestor--built the house to live in. It is not haunted that I've heard of. The Shayls are paying an extended visit to their daughter in Rum, and therefore do not need the place. They did not like to think of it standing empty, so they commissioned me to find suitable tenants. They have no enemies among the Houses."

He opens a leather portfolio and extracts a contract, which he hands over to you. "As you can see, you would be responsible for any damage you caused," he says. "All other damage would be the responsibility of the owners. Their son has their proxy, so any decisions about repairs could be made fairly quickly, without having to send to Rum. I don't know of any secret passageways or hidden comparments."

He laughs at the next series of questions. "I've traveled to other cities," he remarks, "so I acutally know what building codes are. Most poeple here don't. We don't have them in Dirt City, of course." He chuckles. "Building codes!"

"If minor repairs are needed," he continues, "you can apply to me, or to Brother Shayl at the Temple. Or you can fix them yourself, if you prefer. As the contract says, you need to give us 30 days' notice to vacate the property; we likewise need to give you 30 days' notice of the Shayls' return. At the present time, the Shayls have no plans to sell the house, so rent-to-own is not an option."

"The contract calls for a deposit, but I'm willing to waive it. If you like, we can do a walkthrough before you sign the contract, noting any preexisting damage that you will not be responsible for. Pets and paintings are allowed, but you will need to pay for any damage caused by either. I don't know the neighbors, but the Shayls have never had any trouble living here. This being Dirt City, there have been violent crimes in the area, but none in the house that I'm aware of."

Meanwhile, Wilford expresses a willingness to live here, and Talanthrel tries to compensate for the enthusiasim of some of his companions. "It is unusual," says Cother with a slight smile, "but that's why the rent is so reasonable. Do you have any other questions?"

Avin sneers at Cauthon's dubious glance. Although in comparison of his current companions he might appear weak, he is aware that he is at least as strong as an average human. The mental calculations in his head click into place as the wizard finishes his appraisal of the property's value. (Appraisal: 29)

The wizard plucks the portfolio from Cauthon's hands and immediately reviews the terms therein. Not that one could entirely rely upon anything legal in Dirt City but it would be worth something.

"Locks," the wizard says while pouring over the legal information. "Locks and keys. Where, how many, and who has them?"

OOC: I decided to add in the appraisal check to confirm in character that this is a good place. Not all-inclusively, perhaps, but good. Furniture and all that at least, I should think.

Toston says, "I take it that means that Mr. Shayl is a human? Also that there are no defenses magical or otherwise? What about the blue prints, can we see those?" Toston slows down on his questioning after he gets the answers to the questions, some which had gone previously unanswered and a new question about what race Mr Shayl is. Toston was hoping Shayl was a gnome, but it didn't seem like a gnomish name to him.

He then takes the proffered contract and reads it (Perception: 26; Sense Motive: 26)

If everything seems to be in order he says, "Let's go on that walk through."

Toston had been planning to grab Wil for the walk through as the rogue seemed to be the most charismatic of the group but with this group that wasn't saying much. As the man was now sleeping he decides to swap one man for the other and grabs Avin. Toston whispers in Avin ear,

Avin: Highlight to display spoiler: {"Come with us and appraise the items in the rooms for any depreciation due to damage. Depending on what we see I may try haggling, like Ashley suggested."}

Toston then goes room to room trying to spot any sort of damages or defects (Perception: 22, 26, 28, 11, 25, 26, 28, 27, 12). After touring the ground and thoroughly noting the damages he says, "Would you go down to 28 a month" (OOC: lol...Natural 1 on my untrained diplomacy for a total of 2) but then realizes (sense motive: 16) that what he said was probably taking it too far and rather than risk increasing the price says, "I was joking, that's what us gnomes like to do." (Untrained Bluff 4) with a weak chuckle.

"What I meant to say was 40 a month sounds fair, with the deposit waived as originally speculated." and holds out his hand to shake it.

He then requests the amendment to the contract specifying the deposit be waived and then signs the contract with a flourish, encouraging the rest of the party to do so as well.

He says to the group, "Tell Ashley I tried to haggle, but it didn't go so well, if you see him before I do."

DM Kathy--Bonus DM Post!
Friday March 27th, 2015 10:51:20 PM

Ashley departs for the Catacombs, leaving instructions to try to haggle. Avin asks about locks and keys.

"The front door and back door have locks," Cother replies. "There are three keys to the front door, but only one key to the back door. I will keep one front-door key in case of emergencies; you would get the other three keys. The door from the porch does not have a lock, but does have a latch that can be fastened from the inside."

Avin's assessment is that the furniture in the house is not especially valuable. Given the size and the number of rooms, the property itself is worth some coin, and the amount being asked is on the low side--probably because of the eccentric architecture.

Var asks about hammocks, giving his DM a nearly insurmountable urge to go into a riff about the hammock district. "We don't have a hammock," Cother replies, "but it shouldn't be too hard to find one. It's a port city, after all."

Toston still has some unanswered questions. "Mr. Shayl is a human," Cother confirms. "There are no blueprints to the house." He looks up at the structure. "Perhaps a plan would have been a good idea, but.... And there are no defenses other than good, solid walls and locks on the doors."

You do a walkthrough of the place, which gives me an opportunity to describe it more completely.

In the kitchen, there are doors to the pantry and the servant's room, as previously mentioned. There is also a back door, leading outside. And finally, there is a door leading to a set of steep stairs, going up. At the top of the stairs is a landing, with a door leading to--a privy. And that's it. Nothing else on this level, just the privy. However, there are also stairs going up, and more stairs going down (aside from the stairs going back down to the kitchen.)

Going down the stairs takes you back to ground level, where there are two doors. One leads to a small storage area. The other leads to a completely round room, furnished as a bedroom. The decor her is light-colored neutral shades, with a lot of light wood, beige, cream, and light gray. Large windows overlook the overgrown yard. Built-in bookcases, custom-fitted to the curve of the room, line the walls under the windows. There is a large bed, its concave headboard also custom-fitted to the room's curve. There is a writing-table, and a wardrobe. There is also a wrought-iron spiral staircase, climbing up to--the ceiling. There is no second story. Whether there used to be one is unclear. Now, the staircase holds a few knicknacks and potted plants. There is no stove or fireplace in here, so keeping it warm in winter may be a challenge. And, of course, there's the weirdness that, although it's on the same level as the kitchen and great room, the only way to get there is to go up some stairs and then down some other stairs.

Going up the stairs from the privy landing leads to the very large bedroom. As previously mentioned, this room is furnished with two large beds. There are also two wardrobes, a chest of drawers, a writing-table, and a large bookshelf. And there's room for more. You could probably get a third bed up here without crowding anybody. Windows overlook the overgrown yard; you can also catch a glimpse of farmlands beyond, as you are on the very edge of the city. There is a good-sized fireplace, which probably shares a chimney with the one in the great room downstairs. The decor in here is kind of a mishmash; the walls are medium blue, and the furniture, bedding, and curtains are varying shades that don't actually clash with the blue. The stuff in here was probably pulled together from a variety of sources, but it looks like a comfortable, homey room.

Back in the main part of the house, there's a door in the great room that leads to a long hallway. Why somebody felt the need to build a long hallway is a little unclear; there's no reason a room couldn't have been built on right there. At the other end of the hallway is a nice-sized bedroom whose weathered wooden walls have a pleasantly rustic feel. Perhaps this room used to be an outbuilding, and the long hall was built to connect it directly to the house. Its decor is in keeping with the rustic feel; there are a lot of warm, rich, earthy tones ranging from medium brown to dark red. There's a small wood-burning stove, a basket of wood and kindling beside it. Strips of wood nailed to one wall form a ladder; at the top of the ladder is attic space, now empty except for dust balls.

A door from this rooms leads onto the screened porch. It is currently furnished with log chairs and a trestle table, but there is room to add a cot or hammock. Another door leads from the porch to the yard; as Cother said, it can be latched. If somebody was to sleep in here, they would need to go through the rustic bedroom, or out through the yard, to get here.

Back in the main house, another door from the great room leads to--well, you're not sure what. A little room, shaped like half an octagon. Did it used to be a whole octagon? It contains a couple of spindly chairs and a decorative table; there's honestly not room for much more in here. Two doors lead from the half-octagon room.

The first door opens into a bedroom. The decor in here is a bit more feminine then elsewhere in the house. It's not super-feminine--no pink unicorns or poufy chairs. There's a lot of white-painted wood, crisp white linens, cheerful yellow accents, ruffled pillows. There's a a small tile stove, with tiles in the same cheerful white-and-yellow. It is in this room that Wilford is currently sleeping. [OOC: No joke, I already had the idea for the slightly-girly room and then Matt posted about Wil hearing a girl's voice, and I'm all OMG!]

The other door from the half-octagon room leads to yet another oddly-shaped room, this one with three doors. One of these leads to a privy; a second leads to a storage closet. The third leads to stairs heading up. At the top of the stairs is another bedroom. It's a bit oddly shaped, long and thin, so it probably wouldn't be a good choice for adding another bed. The one that's in there is just fine, though. There is also a clothespress, a small bookshelf, and a tile stove. The decor in here has a lot of purple and black. The windows overlook the front of the house. A door in the far wall leads to a hallway, which goes--nowhere. It heads in the direction of the very large bedroom, but doesn't actually go there. So, even though this room and the very large bedroom are on the same level and have a common wall, they aren't accessible from the same stairs and don't even connect to one another.

You complete your walkthrough, noting minor damage here and there. Toston attempts to negotiate, but it doesn't go well. "Tell you what," Cother says with a smile. "I'll waive the deposit and throw in that hammock your friend was asking about. And I'll help you find a reputable cook/housekeeper, if you want one. How does that sound?"

I made a truly feeble sketch of the place, which is here.

Broom isn't very happy with the direction this is going, but the rest of the group seems inclined to rent Marsh House.

Talanthrel looks for unwatched approaches, and realizes immeidately that the house is much less defensible with all the overgrown bushes around it. There are just too many places to hide. So you'll either want to cut all that down, or resign yourselves to the idea that this place isn't a tactical stronghold. After all, you do have access to safehouses if things get dicey.

Ashley is still on his errand to the Catacombs, and Toston has a few last questions for Cother. "Seal of approval?" he echoes, puzzled. "But--but I thought Crescent Moons was a merchant company. Do they hire out servants as well? If you would rather hire through them, then of course you may do so. I was merely offering."

Cother makes the agreed-upon changes, and signs his name to the contract. "I don't need to have a broker review it," he says, "though of course, if you want to have one I'm certainly willing to accompany you. Toston then says, "Var has the right of it. We should setup some sort of deterrent. Maybe pick up some caltrops and scatter them in the heavier brush? Should we accept Cother's offer of finding a housekeeper / cook or check if someone at the company has someone we could use?"

Wil watches the group with interest. He didn't care whether they stayed or went. He would prefer to stay but he was flexible.

Returning once more to the main room, Avin overhears Ashley from the kitchen before he sees him. Quickly double-checking the room, the wizard nods to himself and the group.

"No objections, no problem," the wizard mumbles. "Let's get this signed and finished."

Avin is showing some rare enthusiasm for Marsh House, and seems to be drawn to the round room.

Talanthrel asks how long the lease is for. Cother replies, "Six months. I know the Shayls plan to be away at least that long. At the end of that time, we can re-asses."

Var asks about pets, which Cother has already answered. Pets are allowed, but you'll need to pay for any damage they cause.

Ashley returns from the Catacombs with the money from the sale of the magic items, and of course you already have 200 gold from the pearls. So, if you wanted to rent the place, you have more than enough to get started.

Unless there are objections, then, I'll assume you sign the lease. Cother hands over a front-door key, promising the remaining keys tomorrow. He also says he'll look into finding you a cook/housekeeper--and of course, a hammock.

In the meantime, you have the rest of this afternoon and evening to move your things in here, and work out who is sleeping where.

"Since I already fell asleep in that girlish room I will take it," Wil says confidently. "I may have some other things to do in relation to a deceased resident of the room. It seems to be a young girl that is singing. She is the one that put me to sleep. I'm sure it was mostly due to exhaustion but I thought it was strange that I feel asleep within moments. Anyways, I have very little but the things I wear and my bags..."

"I thought Cother said this place wasn't haunted. Oh well, if Wil wants to bunk down there that's fine. I am okay with either the cot in the servants room till we find a housekeeper, my bedroll on the screened in porch, the rustic room or the round room. I'm not picky, so if someone else would prefer any of those I'll cross it off my list. If I had a preference it would be for the rustic room below the attic, but like I said someone else can have it if they would prefer," Toston says, "also everything I own is on my back so I just need a room and I'm moved in."

Avin plucks the proffered key from Cauthon and ushers him out impatiently before locking the door behind him. With the contract signed and everyone gathered Avin holds up his index finger and mumbles something that sounds curiously like 'ribs' or 'nibs' or perhaps 'fibs' before shuffling off to the round room and placing his backpack by the door before collapsing on the bed. He could get his share from Ashley later.

"I'm of the mind that we don't need an extra pair of eyes snooping around on us. I say nay to the scullion."

The fighter grumbles as he makes his way to the common room. He takes off his pack before unbuckling the sword belt across his chest. Leaning the greatsword against one of the chairs, the large human then begins the tedious process of removing his heavy armor. Stubborn as he is, he doesn't ask for help, nor does he complain. Once his armor is piled up in a neat pile on the other side of the chair, the fighter is revealed to be wearing a plain white linen shirt and black breeches underneath. His neckline hints at black ink underneath, most likely the end lines of a chest tattoo, while his left forearm bears a tattoo of curling vines and flowers wrapping around the circumfrence of it. Ashley sits down in the chair flanked by his equipment, and divies put their spoils from his pack.

"Come get what you're owed, boys. I can't guarantee that it'll be here later if you don't. Especially your fancy butterknife, Toston."

The human grins at them as he sets sacks of gold upon the table along with Toston's cold iron siangham. Talanthrel's pile is the largest, as it seems he was willing to trade in his masterwork weapon instead of his old one.

[I'm going to email everyone with what the treasure divides up to shortly, check your email!]

[OOC: Lack of player posting is a sign that people are getting bored, so let's wrap this up.]

The papers are signed, and you move in. Avin claims the round room; Wilford claims the girly room. Toston expresses a preference for the rustic room, but does not insist on it.

Ashley begins handing out the treasure.

The next day, a messenger arrives with your other keys and a hammock for the screened-in porch. It would seem that you now have a place to live.

Tuesday March 31st, 2015 10:57:12 PM

Talanthrel after choosing a room finds a place in the house or in one of the outbuildings to setup his tools. After setting up his workshop, he goes around to the others to check if any of them needed any repairs to their armor. Once this hopefully minor chore is done he then see about organizing a trip into town to get provisions for the week either with the group or with the bag of holding. Talanthrel also whishes to purchase the materials to start crafting a Composite Longbow Str +2.

Toston takes his cold iron siangham and share of the loot from where Ashley deposited the swag. He then says, "Since no one objected I am going to move into the rustic room."

Toston then takes his bag and heads to the rustic room. He hangs his explorer's outfit and hat of special magnificence in the wardrobe adding the vest with 100 tiny pocket and the white sequin glove to the ensemble. He then climbs the ladder to the attic and puts the small chest with many tiny legs up there.

He figures out how much he is carrying including the new gold and adjusts where he puts his coin accordingly.

(OOC: i'm going to figure out if the coin makes Toston have a medium encumbrance; If it does I'm going to look to change the coin into gems or higher denominations (gold to platinum) or just leave some of it in the attic)

Settling in on the porch with his Hammock, Var notes how odd it feels to not be on the road. "This'll be good, for a time." he says to himself, and eyes the overgrown, under utilized garden. "Maybe we can find a spot for nature in this city, after all."

During the down time, Var purchases some provisions for himself, and and re-stocks his arrows.

Wil sleeps overnight and wake up in the morning. He suddenly feels the need to begin shooting bolts from his hand crossbow into the walls of the room. "I really need to do something," he thinks as he collects the bolts to re-fire them.

Ashley spent his night how he spent most of them, out drinking until it was time for him to crawl into bed. The sailor had stumbled into the home late that night, and upon remembering that he hadn't picked a bedroom, he simply plopped down in a chair in the main room and passed out in it. Upon waking the next morning, the somewhat hungover man was looking for the water source to refill his waterskins, and hopefully make his mouth feel less like he had been chewing cotton.
