Interlude, the WLA

Atlas Sunowl (Trey) AC: 21 (T 13 FF 18), CMD: 18; HP 33/33 Character Sheet
Friday September 4th, 2015 11:35:14 AM

Atlas shakes his head and begins to stand up. "We'll meet here. Everyone enjoy your meals and drinks, I'm heading to bed."

As Atlas heads to the door, he turns back to the group, "Why don't we plan to have breakfast brought to our rooms tomorrow so that we can level set?" If the group agrees, Atlas talks to the bartender to make arrangements.

Assuming nothing else happens, Atlas heads to bed for the night. If something else happens, he stays standing to address it.

"You can do that? Yes please, Atlas!"

'Osul finishes up his hearty stew, conversing with those that remain - keeping clear of any subject likely to be raise at the next days meet.

Eventually he returns to the rooms, and takes up the spot he spent the night before they headed out to investigate the lights.

Carver turns to the WLA representatives,"I guess we'll be seeing you tomorrow afternoon, have a pleasant evening."

Cameron just smiles as the gnome steps all over the plans of the WLA officers. He stands up and walks calmly over to the gnome. He looks holds out his hand, waiting for her to hand over the Fist paperwork. He looks it over and hands her back his folder.
"I don't care if you read mine. That's fine with me, I have made peace with any ghosts in this paperwork. Carver deserves to decide if you read his. What bothers me is that you didn't bother to ask us anything about our backgrounds, anything at all. I think you should be ashamed to call yourselves members of the Woldian League of Adventurers, but that's just my opinion."
" My goddess would be stalking back and forth calling for Vengeance if she were the person YOU all thought she was when you decided to cast that spell on me. Thankfully, to me she isn't that person. The revenge she would call for I forgive you for. Instead I would have all of us, my friends and I and all of you submit to having a Zone of Truth, cast by the high priestess of Alemi here in the Tree tomorrow when we meet. You can tell us about the WLA and yourselves and why you think you need to insult those you would recruit, and we can tell you why we would be an asset to the WLA. If you choose not to induct us, we can just walk to the nearest major city and ask to join there. This can still be a win for both of us. We can benefit from the WLA support and you all can get a better sense of how people want to be treated for future reference when looking for recruits."
"How does that sound?"

Oslo answers before Ferdinand can even consider the halfling cleric's demands.
" I think that would be fine. I know we have nothing to hide from you, we simply wanted to be sure you would care for the WLA as much as we do. Hopefully tomorrow we can prove that to you. Good night, sleep well."
Oslo stands up and offers his hand to the others as they prepare to head off to their rooms.

Hey guys, I should have an early morning post in on Monday for you guys to talk and make plans before the meeting. The rest of the week I work closing shift so I will be posting before noon. I have been told this will be our only chance to join the WLA without a trip to a nearby city, which would probably take us a week to accomplish. Feel free to look it over on the Woldapedia if it is up.

Carver shakes hands with each of the representatives, he has a smile on his face. Cameron hasn't seen him act this way since they were recruits and the outhouse was flooded knee deep in nasty stuff. The entire bunkhouse figured it was him, but it couldn't be proven, because the last people seen using it were the minotaurs from the rival platoon. And since they'd been so full of themselves for being scored on top, it served them right.
As Carver reached the doorway of the tavern, he stopped, turned partway around. "Oh, fairs fair, right?" He uses his Detect Evil on the group and under it's cover he users prestidigitation to add a pepper hot flavor to their drinks. He's hoping they won't notice the second spell, while reacting to his detect evil.
"I figured you cast on us without asking, I'd return the favor."
He then walks away after getting the results of his detect evil.....

Cameron shakes Oslo's hand and retires to go speak to Liliput and make arrangements for tomorrow. Atlas talks to the staff and arranges for breakfast at a late hour of the morning. Eventually all of the group heads to bed and sleeps soundly through the night.
Mid morning arrives and with it a gentle knock at the door. Outside they find a vast array of breakfasts with something for everyone. The morning takes on a sleepover feel as the friends sit and eat breakfast together in their apartment and discuss the coming days activities.

Cameron eats and drinks as he ponders what all they have left to do today. They need to sell some of their loot from the trip, especially if they plan to pay for training with the WLA. They each have purchases to make and then there is the meeting in the afternoon. Cameron shares his views on that.
" I have wanted to be art of the WLA for awhile now. They supposedly do good work among the people by protecting them and promoting good in the community. I am hoping that these guys are just new at this and have been away from people so they just don't understand what they are doing wrong, but I have to wonder. I mean they broke into a secure castle to get those records, all because they didn't trust that Carver and I were good people, and that was based on the god and goddess we follow. I will be interested to see how they came to that idea."

Over breakfast 'Osul discusses the things he feels he needs to get organized, like more clothes for when he is here at The Tree, and better wet weather gear. He also originally thought there was a Druid here at The Tree, but so far he hasn't met anyone he would consider suitable to asking about, well, being a Druid.

When the topic turns to the WLA, he eventually chimes in. "I don't get it. I mean, if it is so worth joining, why do they have to go searching for people? What is this?", he adds, waving something vaguely meat-like on the end of a fork. "Sorry. The 'waiting for us to return' felt a little... off. And the spells.", after which he tunes into the conversations of others.

"Yah, I'm with Osul. The thought behind the group seems good. I'd love to join a group that is trying to do good, and help people in need. The way they went about it seems all wrong though. And this all feels rather rushed."

OOC: I looked over WLA not too long ago, when they were revamping it. I liked it. My problem though was that there were other groups that might be good too, but it seemed like they were perhaps not revamped yet, and might be soon. Since it sounded like we couldn't drop this later, and join a new guild, that had me hesitating until everything was done being revamped / clean up, I guess.

Carver speaks up.....
"Well, while I agree with Cameron about them wanting to check on our backgrounds. That is Cameron's and mine, not the rest of you. That's most likely to make sure we are no longer part of the Mailed Fist and not on some undercover operation here at the tree. Since we both were part of a special unit created as a trail by the Mailed Fist, it would be possible that was the case.
But as why they were searching us out, look around. I mean take a very good look around. While the WLA is a wide spread organization, they're spread out as individuals mostly or very small teams. There aren't really that many outposts. Sure the great cities have them, but the smaller communities and towns see only a couple members a year. Maybe because our friend complained that we hindered his entrance to that club was overheard and was brought to the WLA's attention. They sent these numbskulls out to check us out, found out a couple of us had belonged to the Fist and they just went beyond what they were sent to do.
As to joining them, they truly can be a fount of usefulness. From some of our lesson work at the Fist, they have access to a lot of information because they are wide spread. So was the Fist, but most of that was military in slant, the WLA has all sorts of random knowledge, some useful some pointless. They also teach some very specific skills too.
The part you are interested in though is that while the Mailed Fist is exclusive, from what I heard, the WLA is not exclusive.

Looking at Cameron, "That about covers everything that corporal Deklyn drilled into us doesn't Cam?"
Carver helps himself to some of the breakfast and drinks some of the fruit juice that was delivered too.

" Pretty sure all of the Wold's organizations are exclusive, meaning you can belong to one, and not more, Carver. Now if you all will excuse me, I have some things to do before we meet the WLA officers."
Cameron gets dressed and heads for the market. He remembers feeling naked last night and wears his chain shirt as well as his whip today. He heads to the barber and has his beard dyed and braided so that it resembles The helix holy symbol of his goddess, red and black intertwined. He goes to the clothier and has a white robe made for his test, which he knows will come soon. He then goes to the Temple of Alemi, to set things that have been wrong since he arrived, right.
Cameron enters the temple and heads to the front row. He kneels and pay homage to Alemi, hoping doing so will help him make peace with Liliput. When she has time to see him, Cameron speaks to her.
" First off I wanted to thank you for agreeing to mediate the meeting this afternoon with the WLA. They seem nice, but in their haste to do well in the eyes of their guild, they made a few faux pas last night and stepped on several toes. Mine included. Since I think it was caution and love for their guild that drove them, the 'vengeance ' I told them would be required was that we all speak plainly and under the influence of the zone of truth you agreed to cast on us all last night. "
"I also wanted to speak to you about my desire to make a lace for my goddess here at the Tree, but please let me finish before you say anything, OK? When I came to you before, I did so out of respect. I did not wish to have another temple here if it would make your life difficult. I know that doesn't follow the usual path of Jancassis, but it was my intent. You tried to teach me that Vengeance was not the only way to resolve conflict, and you are right. It is how I plan to seek justice though, in keeping with the main tenants of Jancassis worship."
" Something has been revealed to me while we were in the Red Hills though, something I think will interest you. I found that I am not evil like most of her followers, and yet she grants me power, without corruption, so I thought maybe the way I see her is another way she WAANTS to be seen. You see I see her as an equalizer. She will act when the normal authorities , religions, and people of power will not. She does not listen to the main body of people, but the lone cry for fairness and revenge in the dark. That person, asking for that help is not always evil, in fact they are usually just poor, or weak, or both and can't get anyone else to help them. That is the goddess to whom I pray, and she grants me my spells and teaches me how to do her work for good. That id who I want to make a shrine to."
"I expect that this will require proof, not only to you, but to myself as well. I will seek that proof. Until then I would like us not to be at odds. Is this acceptable to you?"

Atlas enjoys the breakfast and the conversation. This is starting to feel right and he's really happy about that. He chimes in on the WLA topic, "The representatives are a pathetic group to send, but then again, if they are that thinly spread out then they don't have a lot of people to send on wild goose chases like this. I mean, what if we turned out to like Gaston, all bravado and no action? Good people could be spending their time chasing down pointless leads. I say we give them the benefit of the doubt based on what Cameron and Carver said. I'm interested in this, I like what we are doing for the Tree and I would like to continue these good deeds during and after our time here. As long as we keep getting paid and/or treasure that is." Atlas flashes a smile. He doesn't like sounding like a sappy good doer, so best to cover it up with a clear half-truth while among friends.

As breakfast finishes up Atlas gets up and says to the others, "I'm going to take the treasure we picked up to get identified. Once we know what it all is we can determine how we want to split it up. We'll meet back here, share what we know, and go to the tavern together at 3rd bell. See you all in a bit!"

I listen to the conversion at the tavern from the group that say they represent WLA. I have not heard of the them before and am interested in what they are about. Sound like a interesting group guild. I listen to my friends and what they have to say. I stay quite as this is all new to me and have nothing to,say on it. I just take it all in. When we all leave I follow and head to our room for some much needed rest and to process all what has gone on with WLA.

The next morning I joined the others for a much need breakfast and conversion. I again listen to the others to see what they feeling about the up coming meeting. I think will follow what the others do as I don't know much in matters such as these.

I hear Atlas is getting the treasure checked out and sold with Mack. I ask if I can join them as I need to get this light Xbow checked also. I know it is special, but how that I don't. I follow them out, proudly wearing my tabard, heading to the shops.

The WLA
Tuesday September 8th, 2015 8:27:22 PM

The groups goes about their morning taking care of a few things. Osul is pointed towards The Big Nest, a general store as the best chance to buy additional clothes. There is no tailor currently at the Tree. They pass through from time to time, but generally clothing is purchased already put together and sold through the general store

Atlas and Mack work on selling the treasure through the magical gateway of the Catacombs where anything magical can also be purchased by any of the heroes while they are here.

Cameron speaks to Lillyput, who graciously agrees to oversee the WLA and party meeting. She listens to what Cameron has to say on the goddess of vengeance and does not interrupt or seem to pass any sort of judgement at all. When he finishes she smiles softly, "we do not agree on much and may never on some, but I think we may more often than either of us know. I still hold reservations, but you have surrounded yourself well and I will continue to pray that you don't become corrupt. Proof is not what I require, but time, thought and meditation. I agree we should not be at odds, but work with each other. It is in that spirit that I will be with you during your trials. I will observe only, counsel if you wish and you will pass or fail upon your own. You will be tested by your goddes and I will be taught be my god."

The group eventually comes to the meeting with the members of the WLA. Ferdinand stands as you enter and the others follow suit. It appears perhaps a game plan has been laid out to help smooth any ruffled feathers from the other night. "Good day to you all,". Ferdinand says as he gestures to the table and chairs. They sit as the party does. Ferdinand continues, "I trust all slept adequately and gave thought to the heart of the offer. Are there inquiries that we might resolve?"

Aunt Matilda says that the WLA is a decent honest organization, you have a ways to go to regain that status in my mind.
Ask away my friends, I'll listen closely and if you miss anything i consider important I'll be sure to ask them as well."

The first part was obviously directed to the WLA delegates. The last to his friends.
When he sees the Priestess, "Madam Lillyput" Carver says towards her and gives her a bow in respect.....

When Cameron arrives for the meeting he stops at the bar and orders two mugs of the best dwarven ale they have on tap, taking the second one to Oslo to make sure the Dwarf is as much at home as he can be. He sits through Lilliput's blessing, having suggested she be present and cast a Zone of Truth on all of them so that they could speak freely and know that what was said was actually true. If she does indeed cast the spell he does not resist it..
When Ferdinand asks if there are questions without again explaining anything the WLA does , or offers or expects Cameron frowns. Before the others can ask he simply says." As many of my friends made clear last night, your reputation has not preceded you to this meeting. Please describe the WLA to us. What the group does, what they would expect from us as members and what we would receive in return for the dues of membership."

So for the rest of the morning I stay with both Mack and Atlas and help with the treasure selling. I also ask around where I could get and item checked for magical properties? While with Mack and Atlas I say/ask " We there have been together for a long time now, I fact you are my first and true friends I have meet since I left my Grandfather. We came here to the tree together, and been on a few adventures now. We have see and had a few job us and leave so I consider you guy my closest friends and trust you will my life. I not knowing much of this new group WLA, would like your opinion of them and trust your decision. I have warmed up to both Cameron and Caver but we have been together for the start. I trust them almost as much as you guys but we seem to come from the same area and they were together in the fist first and seem to have more knowledge on such things. I just want to know what you think after seeing and hearing about them for the first time? Then meeting them?"

As Atlas goes with Crosseye and Mack he is brought back to the time when they first met. Goodness, it seems like forever ago and yet it hasn't been that long at all when you think about it. "Yes Crosseye, we do have a special bond the three of us. I would lay my life down for either one of you and I know you would do the same. We may never have the same bond with others, but different doesn't mean bad. Like you said, our relationships with the others are growing, by the day it seems. I have high hopes for us and the more I hear about the WLA the more I am intrigued. I think it could be good for us. Much better than mercenaries. Especially since I'm not sure how long our tenure at the Tree is going to be. Too much politics going on for me. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to leave. I like what we're doing, but I wonder how long they'll keep us here. What if we fail on a mission? What if we don't play their politics the way they like? Anyway, good to have backup plans, and all the better if we can do both at the same time."

After going to the Catacombs and figuring out the treasure, Atlas joins the others and they go to the Tavern. He sits and listens to the others, then nods his head in agreement to what Cameron says. He then waits and listens.

-------------------------------------------------
OOC: Does anyone want anything from the treasure before we sell it? I would like one of those long-bows, but I don't know what the properties are on them. They just seemed nice. What is the standard for figuring out such things? Do we role play the entire identification, division of treasure, selling of treasure, etc? That could take a while as Atlas has to bring back the identified and appraised items, the group has to decide who wants what, we have to then take the rest back to sell, then we have to evenly distribute the gold based on who took what and the value and what gold is left. Goodness, my head hurts, lol!

The WLA
Wednesday September 9th, 2015 11:29:05 PM

Ferdinand sits back and raises an eyebrow in a bit of genuine surprise, "I was unaware your ignorance of the WLA. I will attempt to enlighten you." He then proceeds to lay out the history, structure and ethos of the Woldian League of Adevnturers.

The WLA is ancient, dating back, according to some, to the Second Age and filling the void of the Oshirr House after the ascension of Alemi and Domi. It has borne several names over the centuries, but the original Three Precepts of Oshirr House remain:

To foster the excellent behavior and sterling reputations of adventuring groups.
To offer adventurers centers for training and information.
To help those in need to find an adventuring group to aid them.
The original first chapterhouse of the WLA in the interior of the continent of Yrth no longer exists. It was abandoned at the end of the Third Age and assumed to be destroyed in the Cataclysm. The current ‘First Chapterhouse’ is in Plateau City near the Red Wyrm Inn. It was established by the legendary half-elven ranger-cleric Lars Tokasis, who devoted his considerable wealth and prestige to enhancing the reputation and reach of the WLA throughout the Wold. Some say he is still alive, and lucky members may meet him and even learn from him during their training.

Each chapter operates independently but works from a common charter overseen by the First Chapterhouse. Most local chapterhouses are run by retired adventurers or family members of local adventurers and can provide food, lodging, information and training. Most chapterhouses have access to healing and other spell casting services for the regular price.

WLA chapters tend to be built near the a city’s most infamous inn. "Of course we are not looking to build a chapter house here, we are simply inviting you to join. Plateau City is the nearest Chapter house currently."

The League pretty much runs itself, supported through altruism and heroic adventurers stepping up when needed. When necessity requires a Wold-wide response, a League Council convenes at the First Chapterhouse. Invariably, the right heroes seem to be at the right time and do what needs to be done. The League works closely with the Dragon Consortium.

The League strives to be a beacon of good in the Wold without taking sides when people and nations disagree in good faith. They do not have any true enemies or rivals in the ruling governments in the Wold, though they are viewed with distrust by a great many other groups, notably the mercenary outfit The Mailed Fist.

"Providing you wish to join. It is quite simple. We, as officers can administer the oath to follow the ethos and spirit upon which we are founded. You will be presented a magical Badge and we will remain for several days for initial training. You will want to journey to Plateau City sooner rather than later to follow up and if you wish to pursue higher ranks within our Organization"

"Questions? Thoughts or concerns?"

OOC I suggest someone declares they take the treasure to the catacombs where it is identified and then arrive at the monetary split of what each set is worth. If anyone wants an item, they pay the worth of the selling price back into the collective pot This does not need to be played out.

Cameron looks puzzled, then a bit sad, finally he asks.
" If the nearest chapter house where we can gain any of the benefits of membership, Information gathering, further training and the like is well over a hundred miles away, I am kind of at a loss how joining the League really helps us. We are the backbone of the protectors here at the Tree, when not seeing to the needs of the Tree we have scant little time to go haring off to plateau city just to gain a few skills. There is no closer chapter in say Emerald City or maybe Edenmoor? "
Cameron starts to consider how long of a trip it would be every few weeks to gain further training when the trip itself would take over a week, each direction.

"Cameron, Ferdinand said currently.", and turning his head towards Ferdinand he asks, "Are there plans afoot for somewhere more local to host a chapter?" The turn of his head is owl-like - little else moves in the process.

Unfortunately, Plateau City is beyond his experience, except possibly in stories as a child, and those are not fresh enough in his mind to be related. He gets Cameron's references to Emerald and Edenmoor, but to him Plateau City might as well be across the sea - a phrase used by people (in his experience) who had never even seen a sea - much like himself.

Atlas listens patiently, then responds, "Cameron and 'Osul are both right. However, the bottom line is that it would be more reasonable if there was something closer. I like the idea of joining, I just don't see the benefit of tying ourselves to a group or guild within this situation. If we move our work closer then I can see how there would be benefit, or if a chapter is opened closer, but why tie ourselves to you right now? You wouldn't have come all the way out here if you didn't think that we would accept, so maybe you can shed some light on it."

"Hey guys, while it is some distance to reach, I believe the training would be well worth while. We might not get much use out of the information services, but the rest would help. Of course, if we do join up, they would have a reason to possibly set up one of their outposts here at the tree. It would be out in an area where they really don't have much presence and that would benefit the WLA as a whole. Giving them a source out here, as well it would give us and anyone else that comes through a base."
Carver tries to make it sound as inviting as possible for them to open an outpost here at the tree.

Ferdinand begins to respond, but is cut off by Oslo. "Tying yourselves to a group? Are you serious? We are the light that shines in the darkness and ventures forth where other fear to trend or who don't see enough gold."

Ferdinand starts to raise his hand, but Oslo continues on, "We're not some paid to hire adventuring mercenary group. We are what stands before the dragon and cries enough. Not because we're being paid, but because it is the right thing to do. If you're not of that mind then I say bugger off."

The rest of them nod, though Ferdinand obviously wished the phrasing was different and tries to smooth over things. "Yes Plat City is a little far, but so is Emerald City. I know of no plans to place a Charter House in Edenmoor, but that is far above my pay grade. We are a force for good and do our best to help others of a like mind and not only where it is convenient for them. What we found here at The Tree, says you are those people, future heroes the Wold will proudly know. If we are mistaken, accept our apologies. if not, Accept the Badge of the WLA. The Tree of Parting, as your man Carver has said, would make an excellent Chapter in the future and you would be the cause and creator of that event in the fight against evil and oppression."

" THAT!! That is exactly what I was wanting to hear out of you guys! Not how you can sneak into a fortress overcome by chaos, or how you can find out most of what we have done from some scullery maids and wait staff. Being able to do the legwork is fine and dandy, but conviction like Oslo's is rare. The League he describes is the group I want to be a part of. My Lady has long been given short shrift as evil because the only folk seen worshiping her are evil. It is time for someone with the best interests of others to wear her symbol, perform good deeds and walk in the light with a group like that by his side."
"Waitress, another ale for my new friend here, and a refresh for the rest of these folks as well."
" You guys need to put the passion you have for your League out where people can see it. Am I proud to walk with the rest of these fellows here? You have no idea how proud. Given the chance to make a pile of gold or do the right thing when they were hired to babysit a rich boy while he played hero in the woods, they chose to do the right thing, and let me tell the tale of how he was not who the Chancers thought he was. Would they let Ogres do what they wanted in the Red Hills or put a stop to them and make the hills safer? Two dead ogres and their guard wolves later, with a third ogre on the run without so much a a serious wound. Mack was even the one to drop the first ogre with his bare hands."
" I doubt that ogre stopped before he reached the dank hole he calls home. He and his whole group wore brands like this on their arms, the wolves had the symbol on their collars. Come to think of it, a group of well heeled goblins bore the same mark. What do you make of it?"

Cameron tosses the collar with the oval with three dots inside it on the table for the WLA delegates to look at.

Whilst Cameron puts it well into words, Oslo's full-throated defence of the League brings a bold smile to 'Osul's face.
He wonders if Cameron's waitress was or wasn't listening to the earlier part of his exposition, and so was or wasn't taken aback or offended, and was or wasn't going to serve him, and if was, then was or wasn't going to do something to his drink.{Sense Motive: 20} But perhaps such things are best not dwelt on by someone who has spent about two weeks in the last about two years in the company of peculiar creatures with one pulse, two legs, and any number of motives they might wish to obfuscate - thank goodness he had siblings!
He wonders and hopes that his friends once of the Mailed Fist are now golden - and he believes they probably always were - and that if he, with no recent history amongst the speaking to check on, is merely ... gilt by association.
All this quiet wondering with a grin on his face is likely going to get him into trouble with someone - on no, I've been staring into the space just over Heather's left shoulder!
He turns his head and green eyes back to Oslo, and remarks, "I'm assuming you have other duties that keep you off the paths, otherwise everyone you spoke with would be a member of the League!" {Aid Another (Carver) Diplomacy: 4 - sorry}

Atlas watches and listens without emotion. After they're done he listens to Cameron and 'Osul as well. He then turns to his drink, still full, and ponders for a bit as he watches the liquid move slightly, as if the tree itself is slightly swaying them...but that's impossible, it is way to big...or is it?

"I don't know. I appreciate what you offer and I'm all for helping folks, but I don't think I'm the type of person you think I am. I'm here for the treasure and adventure. Sure, when given an option I try to do the right thing, but it isn't my life goal to go out and set the world right. I just don't have the type of passion about it that Oslo here has. Maybe that will change as I get older, but right now I just want to experience life, learn, find gold and spend it, and find myself a few nice women to keep me warm at night. I don't feel like I can do your group justice at this point in my life.

"Bottom line, if you want someone that likes adventure and tries to do the right thing when presented with an option, then sure, I will sign up. If you want someone who's passion is doing good and setting the world right then I'm not your guy. If you want someone that wants to be a hero like those of childhood stories, well, then I'm on the fence, but leaning towards yes.

"This really is a lot to take in."
Atlas sighs loudly and finally takes a drink.

After a moment of silence, Atlas looks around at the group and perks up. "Then again, if these good folks want to take up the torch of good then who am I to stop them. I'll be part of the group, I just cannot promise the passion of Oslo here. However, I can promise that I'll keep my moral compass true, as that is a promise I have already made myself, and I don't plan on breaking it for no one."

I enter the inn for the meeting with both Atlas and Mack. See the others and walk over to join them. I shake all their hands and take a seat at back in a dark quiet area like always. I listen to all the conversions going on about the league, taken in the information and other options. I think to myself " The group/league sounds very interesting and along the lines of what my grandfather has been teach me for! Did he know of this organization? Was he part of it. What of my parents? Would these guys know or would I be able find out at the Chapter house in Plat City? How much and how many times would we have to travel that Chapter house?" These are all questions going thought my mind right now. But the last part I think is the most important at the moment to everyone. We don't want to leave the tree under protected now with what has gone on. But then again having the league and symbol behind us would not hurt in the future even against Gaston if there is more to come from that. I sure he knows of WLA. Plus these guys seem to have so much convition and passion for the guild.

Cameron sits quietly and listens to Atlas, trying not to judge, but getting a sinking feeling inside. he thought that these folks would be the good folks he needed to ally himself with to find the people that were responsible for his parents and Morgan's deaths. He hoped he had been right and this was just a small setback.
" We will need to sell some of the stuff we found on our last outing for me to pay the training fee but I want to join."

I listen carefully..... especially at what Atlas says. He may not consider himself the good person they are looking for, but I believe he is, or is destined to become so when the time is right. I'm not worried.

"Is Gaston a member of the WLA? If NOT, I'm in. If you're all that you sound to be, it's something I'm definitely interested in. Heck, once we get some more info, and are a little more experience and knowledgeable, maybe we can even help you set something up at the tree, or represent you here ourselves."

Just to our group when the time is appropriate: "Worst case scenario the way I see it, if things end up being different then what we're being sold now, I'll just leave the group later."

"I am interested in joining the WLA, even if Gaston is a member. The Chancers considered letting him join, but he was shown for who he is. If he is a member, maybe he had not been discovered for his true colors.
I also will need to get some cash, which I think we will have once we sell the stuff we got from those goblins and ogres. And yeah, do any of you recognize those markings? Because both of those races wore them, and as far as I can remember, don't Ogres eat goblins?"

Carver is obviously passionate about this, he knows there is a strength of character in belonging to a organization like the WLA.

After her the others option I think it is my time. I stand up and address the table. "The WLA sound very very interesting and something I would like to be apart of, but I do not want to leave the tree unprotected. In my short time here I have started to call this home with my new friends. So the questions I have is because the closest chapter is for away how often to we need to go there for training and updates or is there another way we can get the information and communication we need here? Also the training? If not how long and how often do we need to be at the chapter house? Don't think I am not deacaded to a,guild when I join but I am also committed to help out here and will not abandon that either. As the Tree seems to be along a major trade route and outpost and I this area I propose would greatly help the WLA also. A way to keep an eye and things out here and the RED HILL area. In fact we just return from an information gathering mission were we found out about an old ancient out post letting off some sort of beacon. That is where we found the guys wearing that symbol. There is much more going on out that then we know and need to be further investigated. Yes, we need training, as we are all young but time might be of inportance. How long does basic training take? With that though I would be honoured to join like my fellow friends! Yes even Atlas in time will be very honoured, as his morals are in the right place he just doesn't know yet. He is a very honourable person also looking to do the right think, and if that lines his pockets too, even better." With that I sit back down quietly waiting for their response.

The WLA
Sunday September 13th, 2015 10:59:35 PM

Cameron's outburst and jump upon the table is met with a wide grin from Oslo, who stands and shakes his hand vigorously. Ferdinand slumps slightly and some get the impression that the way the party was to be approached was up for debate with Oslo and Ferdinand having very differing opinions.
Sarah, the barmaid of Tree Tops, moves quickly over and asks Cameron to refrain from jumping atop the tables.

The main concern of training and the need to journey to a Chapter House is asked and answered. Heather fills in the blanks.
The party is being asked to go within the year to solidify there membership. After that, it will be up to the group how often they make the trip. The WLA has no standing requirements below the rank of officer. Even then, they are pretty fluid and case by case for WLA members 'at large', such as the party here. Also, it is not an all in or not deal. It is an individual decision and unlike the Mailed Fist, it is not a life time commitment. Though most WLA never actively remove themselves from membership.

The collars are put on the table and are passed about and the gnome, whom you finally learn goes by the surname Glittergleam scoops it up and pauses with a most curious expression upon her face. "I have seen this before." her fingers tap subconsciously upon the table top Tap Tap Tap Tap "I'm sure of it. I know this Tap Tap Tap Tap

The others, Oslo, Ferdinand and Heather cast looks at each other, knowing looks bred from many adventures together.

Ferdinand, "This may be important and if we could duplicate this symbol or procure it from you for additional research. We would communicate our findings."

The Gnome falls silent but is still thinking.

Atlas watches and waits. Finally he finds a time to chime in, "I still have the question on the table. Do you require that I am evangelical in my pursuit of good, or are you OK having someone in your organization that just does good things. I want to continue doing what I'm doing now. If that is enough for membership then I'm OK joining. I definitely see the benefit of having the backing of a group like the WLA. However, if I have to go around jumping on tables and preaching to people about the importance of stamping out evil then I'm out."

Atlas pauses, but before anyone else can jump in, he poses one more question, "Has anyone considered what impact this would have on our agreement and future with The Chancers? Before we agree to anything we should probably check in with them to see what the results would be. I could easily see where they would want to replace us later with adventures that would rather join the Chancers than the WLA. Maybe the WLA doesn't mind that we're in both, but maybe the Chancers do? Too many unanswered questions and I don't like rash decisions unless there's a battle going on. I suggest that after we wrap up the question and answer session that we take some time to consider our decision. Or rather, that's what I'm going to do, and I'm going to recommend it to the rest of you."

"The Chancers, though they treated us well, would never let us join them. They are the wealthy and privileged of the Wold, the tip top of the cream of high society. Unless we are doing a bang up job of hiding it, none of us had, have, or ever ill have the wealth or prestige to join their ranks. Besides, they just parade around in those ridiculous get ups and have dances and sponsor fox hunts and such, they don't do real adventuring, they might break a nail or something. Or, heavens forbid, get blood on their golden armor. Because of that, you might now see why Gaston was so upset that the word of people like us kept him fro a crowd like that."
"As for the state of your goodness Atlas, what was your first reaction when we decided to go after those Ogres? Did you say ' nah, not my job, bears can fend for themselves.' or did you go along with us and if I remember correctly, charge right in and kill one of them by yourself? If you were to come upon myself, or Mack, or Heather here, being beaten up by some thugs what would be your response? I'm pretty sure I know what it'd be, and that is all the answer you need give to prove to me that you are more good than not. I don't think you would be at this table considering this if you weren't the guy I think would help out the one being attacked, and sort out the why of it later."

Cameron turns to Ferdinand and tosses him one of the collars.
" You can keep one of these, we have our memories and another collar to try and match it up ourselves. The goblins that wore that symbol were odd, because they were well equipped, almost uniformly equipped. The three ogres all had well made weapons and armor. They too were all dressed the same and dare I say, they were almost CLEAN. As Carver said ogres usually bully and use little humanoids for sport, not as allies. Someone much more powerful than they must have been pulling their strings to overcome that kind of inbred savagery from the ogres. If you can help us find out who that is, we would be much obliged so that we can keep an eye out for them here."
"No one else seems to want to relate what we found out there to you, so I will. We were drawn in by a blue light being projected from the ground every night last week. We found a mound that had some digging being done around it. There were many different tribes of goblins in the area, including the ones we found wearing those symbols, just outside of the door o the complex we found in the hill. The doors had some kind of puzzle lock on them in high woldian. The door fit incredibly seamlessly. The door was perfectly counterbalanced. I have seen excellent dwarven stonework, this was truly impressive. Inside were more puzzles and a mechanical guardian. The guardian became combative when we started solving the puzzles to try and turn out the light and we had to destroy it. It seemed to be powered by several diamods and these two rods."

Cameron puts the rods he found inside Asads on the table to show the WLA representatives.
" They are incredibly light for the strength and size they are. We eventually managed to turn off the lights, stopping the light should stop the goblins and other humanoids, that is what we went there for. We can show you where the place is on the map, if you want to examine it."
Cameron seems to run out of things to talk about, he looks around to the others as if to ask if he missed anything.

Likewise they have nothing substantial to say about the map.

Turning to 'Osul, "Sorry 'Osul, I know you likely think of the Ogres as an abomination rather than nature and that is why the bear needed saving rather than just fulfilling its role as prey, but I happen to think of them as nature, albeit an evil part of nature."

Turning back to Cameron, Atlas finishes his thought, "The reason I attacked the Ogres was because I hate them. Also, it was good practice. I'm always trying to get better. Not to mention, we need to bring this group together if we're ever going to survive all this and this was a perfect opportunity to help with that.

"Outside of the Ogres, sure, I'll help someone in distress, it's the right thing to do and I'm stupid sometimes when it comes to being brave. However, if you ask me to go save a village that is being ruled by an evil wizard I'm not so sure I would do it unless I was handsomely rewarded. Granted, depending on the situation I may find another reason, like defeating evil wizards could just be fun, or maybe he's eating the children, that is just not right, but at face value I walk away from that without a just reward because the risk is too great. Let the folks of that village do their own saving. So, back to doing good...sure, that's great, but it is not what drives all my decisions, it is just a part of it."

Atlas stops, takes a drink, then shakes his head. "This is silly, why are we spending all this time talking about me and my moral values. It looks like you guys are all in, and from what Ferdinand here says I'm comfortable that being good is good enough. I'll join with the rest of you. Let's see what the treasure brings to see if we can pay these dues."

After a bit Atlas randomly says, "Just for the record, this could be a great scam to get a ton of money. These good folks could have killed a few WLA members, taken their badges, and then go around asking people to join and pay their dues. I'm not saying they are, I'm just putting it out there so I can say, I told you so, if it comes to that." Atlas smiles, It's fun poking this group. When will they realize that half the stuff that comes out of my mouth is just for fun?

" You see, at first that was what I thought about the bear too."

Cameron makes a placating motion to 'Osul and Mack, indicating he isn't finished.

" Then, I thought about it. So what, they kill a bear. But they continue on and go find the cubs. We were able to track the bear, why wouldn't their wolves be able to do the same back to the cubs. They survive both of these fights and the later come upon some people traveling through the Red Hills, and they kill, torture and eat them too. Where do we draw a line? To allow them to exist to carry on like that against a bear is just the same as allowing them to survive and hunt people. The Jancassis I worship is appalled that you would turn your back on people as much in need as you describe in your example for the sake of some coin. But, you do not have to answer to her, and I would not withhold her blessings and healing from you for it.I want to, and do, think better of you than that. I am pretty sure you would help, even without the promise of pay. I would, heck, I did when I went off books in the Fist to help those performers. I got no reward, and I was risking court martial and possible execution if I lived through the fight. I am quite sure they never expected me to show up with those folks where we were supposed to go, or turn myself over to be tried, but I did that too, yet the goddess I worship is seen as evil by most of the Wold."

Cameron pauses and drinks some of the ale from his glass, getting ready to field Atlas's next point.

" As to them being possible murderers and just wanting to rip us off after killing for those badges, yeah, I thought of that too. But here's the thing..."
Cameron points to the gnome thief.
" She went off on independent ops to break into a fortress crawling with guards that are pretty well on high alert right now, just to vet Carver and me because we were questionable. That file WAS my file from the Fist, no doubt in my mind. No one running a con would ever bother with that level of detail and do things to set our nerves on edge if they didn't truly care about whether or not we would reflect poorly on them in this organization. They care. I have no doubt that she had a good escape plan ready, but the risk that takes to accomplish is not run of the mill. They are the real deal. Join, don't join, it's your coin. I am in, and currently I am all I need to worry about."
Cameron gets up and shakes hands with the WLA representatives, and Lilliput.
"Thank you all for meeting with us and clearing the air. Let me run off while the merchant stalls are still open and see if the coin we get for the gear we took from the humanoids is enough to pay for our training. I will meet you all in the morning to begin the task of training."

The rest of the night I stay with the group of friends at the bar enjoy myself drinking and small talk. When the evening comes to a close I head back to,our room with the map. To more we will need to go over this and look into it more? Plus hopefully start our training what ever that is.

"Gentlemen. May i present Owen Marcellus. Wizard of some renown and in need of companions of like heart and mind. I believe you are such adventurers." Lilliput motions to Owen to stand and greet the others

"We're an open book, so feel free to ask some questions as well. However, I'm fairly sure that Cameron here will give you a robust rundown on us. He has the gift of long speech."

However, since Atlas took the +1 longsword, shouldn't he consider that part of the loot and not get as much gold? So basically, (18,751+value of the longsword)/6 and Atlas takes the value of the longsword out of his portion of the gold?

(Dave's email says how much cash you get Atlas, because you got the sword you got less cash.)

As Crosseye drools over the cash, Carver sees new gear and the need to still wait for a trip to the Catacombs.....
When Crosseye asks, "Well, I imagine this training will be quite different from what we had before. We had tactics and military history training in classrooms. Then we had weapon training in the salle, then we actually went on maneuvers and did practicable exercises out in the field, against our instructors, other units in training and then against real opponents.
I figure what I want to learn is focused training, someone might want field training, then someone else might manual dexterity style training. In other words training in Perception, survival and lock picking. See, all different types of skills, yet we can gain knowledge from the WLA.
As to what to bring, it also depends on what skill or skills you wish to train.
Me, I want to learn how to use random magical items and then if there is time I want to learn how to notice things."

Cameron returns from the merchants with a wheelbarrow. (clean, the staff need not worry about him tracking in mud). In it is a sack for each member of the group. Atlas's sack is smaller, since he chose to take the magical sword but everyone elses is filled with platinum and a few gems, smaller than the ones taken out of ASADS. In one of the chests they found are the potions, 6 cure light wounds potions (1d8+1 healing) and 4 cure moderate wounds potions (2d8+3 healing). On top of THAT is a light crossbow. It is finely made and if checked is magical ( light crossbow +1). He sets the potions on the table and passes each sack to it's new owner.
With that job done he steps over to the new member of the group, what did Lilliput say his name was? Owen Marcellus? He thinks so.
" Hi, my name is Cameron of Jancassis. Welcome aboard. You have the look of a soldier about you. Lilliput was short on discription, only saying you had recently arrived. What brings you to the Tree of Parting?"
Cameron is a three foot tall halfling. His skull is shaved, quite recently from the look of it. His chin is adorned with a long, braided beard that you would think would be much more at home on the face of a dwarven clan warrior. It is dyed half red and half black and then braided into a helix pattern, the holy symbol of the goddess he claims as his patron, Jancassis. He wears a chain shirt that appears to have been made by a master dwarven smith. At his hip is coiled a mastercrafted whip. It's rich leather is braided red and back in a helical pattern. As you look at the fine craftsmanship made by the leather worker here at the Tree you notice that it is....moving. The tip of the whip looks exactly like a viper's head and as you watch you swear that you see a snake's tongue snap out and test the air.
" I also saved this out of our loot. I saw you looking at it like you knew how to use it. If you can, you are welcome to it. It doesn't look like you managed to bring much with you to the Tree. You'll need quarrels, but it is magic and will enchant whatever bolts you fire from it."

Our mission had taken us through the Culverwood and up the Peaseblossom, but a river monster attack shattered the division. I made myself invisible but was knocked overboard and unconscious. Some traders dragged me out of the river in Izen and I made my way to the Tree."

He looks away for a moment. "I just hope my family has escaped harm, as I have. I'd like to bring them here someday."

Cameron knows that family can be both a blessing, and a burden in that others can use them to get to you. He wouldn't want to deprive this man of his family though.
You sound as if they might come to harm because you were lost on a combat mission. If it is time sensitive we can go and get them and bring them here. Where are they?"
He looks at his companions to gauge their level of willingness to aid this man. It doesn't really matter if they want to help or not, Cameron has a history of going off the books to do things without his friends knowledge, consent, or approval. It would be a nice gesture and a good way to bond if they wanted to help him though.

A few days of relaxation
Thursday September 17th, 2015 9:48:27 PM

Owen familiarizes himself with the Tree of Parting, natural wonder of the Wold and possibly the largest. Sarah is happy to speak with you on the views from the grand east window, as well as the upper northern view and sunset suite. Each offers a glorious and unmatched view of the fertile plains about the tree. The eastern view on a clear day can spy all the way to the eastern woods. A place Owens new friends had been to not so long ago. With a horrible braggart, Gaston. "The boys could surely tell you all about it". Further east is Edenmoor and eventually the grand city on the plateau.
Down the western road you skirt Izen on your way to Emerald Ctiy. North is the red hills and south is more of Izen

Owen meets much of the residents of the tree. [link]http://woldiangames.com/Woldipedia/index.php/Tree_of_Parting[link]

The training is nothing like the Fist. The party is given the WLA badge, a magical enhancement to skills you already posses. Between the four WLA officers they cover a wide variety of topics and techniques over a few days. They leave some basic books as well to begin the groups library

The catacombs beckon as gold burns its way through your pockets

Cameron takes a few days by himself, quiet reflection and preparation for what he needs to do as well. Lilliput arranges a location for him, assures his privacy will be maintained and helps him secure all he needs.

Cam, make a pair of rolls if you're still moving forward n this and I assume you are.

Cameron (David F) AC 20 (T 14, FF 17) CMD 16 HP 27 /27 Character Sheet  d20+7=18 ; d20+8=19 ;
Thursday September 17th, 2015 11:34:42 PM

Cameron never thought, never dreamed, that someone outside his faith would understand what the test meant to him. Lilliput was not even a worshiper in the same Pantheon, yet she seemed to understand that it was not only a test to prove something to his goddess, but to himself too. As the WLA trained him he started having the dream.

In the dream he awoke in total darkness with his feet clamped in some sort of vice. No movement was possible. Doing as he had been taught, he turned to his other senses. He could FEEL an almost unbearable heat. He could HEAR what seemed like a rhythmic chuffing noise. He could Taste the hot flavors of coal and steel and he could SMELL the scent of fire and brimstone, hot in his nostrils and very close at hand. All the sensations of the forge, yet there was no light.
In his mind he heard the words. They were spoken by a silken voice, hard and unyielding as they were soft and seductive.

" You think you are ready? Some men have trained for decades to come to the point where they felt they were prepared. You have only followed my path for a year. Why do you think YOU are ready?"

He hears himself reply, but how can he? His lips are dry and his throat makes no sound. Still the answer comes in his own voice. " I have followed you for as long as I can remember, though I didn't know it. Every time I was hazed by the dwarven children, or beaten up because I was small and weak I felt the spark of your touch. When the men came to my home to kill me and Morgan fended them off I felt the ember inside me ignite. When I saw the performers looking for a miracle and wanting to win back the pride that had been stolen from them I heard your voice urging me on. I have followed you for decades, yet only in the past year have you guided my search, strengthened my heart and mind, hushed my step and taught me that knowledge is as sharp a weapon as a knife. All of these lessons I have learned, all of these lessons you sent me. That is why I am ready. That is why you have come to me to ask these questions. It is but another test."

He hears the loud crack of the whip, but instead of feeling its sting he feels a crushing weight smashing into his head from one side and slamming it into a solid surface form the other. The blinding mask that had made him think it was dark falls away, and he can see that his other senses told the truth. He was inside a forge. The coals surrounded him, heating him and making him pliable. He couldn't move because the tongs held him still. Whenever the whip cracked it was really the fall of the hammer on him, smashing him into the anvil and pushing the impurities from him. For a long time he had likened his faith in Jancassis to the forging of a tool. Jancassis would put in the work to form him, shape him, hammer him into the tool she needed. For a long time he thought that she would form him into a knife, the tool of vengeance. Instead he was being formed into something else. He wondered what he would become.

" You have learned my lessons well, haven't you. You have spotted the clues I leave in your path, seen the dangerous ones for what they really are and yes, you HAVE known me for a long time. I wondered if you would remember how long it had really been. You seem to know everything, but here is the million coin question. What should I make of you? What tool would you best serve me as?"

Again the voice that is Cameron's, but does not come from his mouth answers. It speaks without hesitation. " For a long time, I wanted to be made into a knife. A weapon to be used to exact revenge. But things have changed, I have changed. I have spoken to other followers, and to those that know you only by reputation. They know a far different goddess than I do. The Jancassis they know is an evil goddess, a scourge to those that break an oath and an evil murderous wretch that pays back every slight with death. The goddess I worship is a champion who stands up for the weak and allows them the chance to set right things that have been done to them. A champion that levels te field through venom, stealth, guile, knowledge and the freedom to use any and all of those things to bring about vengeance, but in proportional measure to the injustice. That is the goddess I know, that is the goddess I would represent. I would have you make me a balance, a scale. With a shield on one side and a whip on the other. A shield to protect the weak and the small, and a whip to punish those that would do them harm or break their oaths."

The whip cracks come faster, and louder. The pain of the forging is unbearable. But this is his test, so he grits his teeth and bears the pain. WHen he can stand the silence no more, he hears a chuckle. Throaty, like running your hand along a velvet blanket. The chuckle is deep, it has real amusement in it, but it is not unkind.

" I look inside you, deep inside where nothing can be hidden, and see that this IS how you perceive me. Do you know how long it has been, since a mortal saw me this way? You realize of course, that though you share a kindred with my other followers, they will not look kindly on what they will see as blasphemy. Very few in the church will even be amused by this perception of me, and far less amused by you spreading it around, as I KNOW you will. I can still make you a knife. A rather sharp, cruelly hooked knife. I think it would fit you well, once you lost that thick shield of morals you carry around. Is your choice final? ARE YOU CERTAIN?"

Again, no hesitation and the voice is speaking. Finally Cameron realizes where the voice is coming from. Deep in his chest it is his heart doing the talking. " I am certain. Make me the scale upon which you shield the weak and punish the strong."

He feels himself plunged back into the coals. The chuffing sound intensifies as the bellows is stroked over and over, drawing in the air and using it to heat the coals. The heat is so intense he can feel his hair, his skin and even his bones melting and reforming into another shape. As this happens he begins to see visions. First the clearing, where he consecrated the whip to Jancassis. In it is a box, long enough to hold a halfling lying prone, with a bit of room to spare. He sees Lilliput, standing outside the ring of torches that lights the scene. Her eyes are closed and her brow is furrowed in concentration. He sees the sky, through the trees above as he lays in the box. The moon is full.

" You wish o bring my worship from the darkness into the light. The light makes stealth more difficult. Instead of the ritual being performed by the absolute darkness of the new moon, it shall be done under the full moon. This will be a sign between us, a secret between us, and a holy day between us. "

Seconds before he awakens with his bed clothes soaking wet with sweat he sees himself being held above the quenching bath in a pair of giant tongs. The quenching bath appears to be full of poison.

It's been six years since I've seen them, so I worry. Once I get established at the Tree I'd like to bring them here, but I'll have to find a place to live and build a library first. In the meantime I'll write letters and try to send them home by caravan.

During his exploration of the Tree and his conversations with those who live there, someone mentions to Owen that the adventuring party had brought back a curious rolled painting of the Tree. One night at the Tree Top he asks them about it: "They tell me that you came across or were given some sort of rolled-up painting. What's the story, there?"

Cameron wakes from his dream, startled and a bit unsettled. He rises, discards his sweaty nightclothes, dresses and heads out to walk the catwalks of the Tree. All is dark outside, and he relies on his other senses to tell him where to place his feet. He lets his mind drift as he walks and soon comes to find himself in front of the Leafy Chapel. Somehow he is not surprised. Stepping inside he see's that the lamps are lit, and a small figure kneels before the altar.
Did Lilliput have the vision too?
from the door, so as not to startle her he calls, " Did you have a dream? Did you see what I saw too? My Lady has agreed to allow me to be tested. She says the ritual will happen under the full moon, rather than the new moon as a sign of my desire to bring her worship into the light. The full moon is tomorrow night. I need to make ready. I saw you in the vision as well, doing as you said you would, standing watch over me. Thank you again. I will make sure the place is set and ready for the ceremony. I believe the Lady will bring everything else that is required."
Cameron waits to see if she will answer, then departs for the clearing. He makes certain that the clearing is, well, cleared. in the morning he will acquire a box of the size he saw in the vision and the torches to light the place. By then he will be due at his training, he will train, bathe and be ready for the ceremony at midnight. Before the Ceremony begins he will Consecrate the area.

Sunday September 20th, 2015 8:09:33 PM

Midnight approaches and Cameron descends the Tree to the clearing. He walks along the path to the clearing wearing only a light robe and carrying only his whip and holy symbol. When he arrives he lights the torches and then prepares the site, casting Consecration to make the site holy to Jancassis. His preparations made he waits for the moon to be directly above him, signaling the hour of midnight. He hears Lilliput approach and can hear her at the edge of the clearing, quietly praying to Alemi. He takes strength from her presence and the fact that the father of heroes, he lord, will also see him as he takes his test to prove himself tonight.
At midnight he takes off his whip and robe. leaves them at the foot of the box and lies down in the box, waiting for the test to start. His scriptures and the learning he has read about Jancassis have him thinking he knows what will happen. The reality is quite different.
As he lies in the box he sees the light dim to only moonlight in the clearing. He can see one of the torches and knows that it still burn, but it's light does not spread to fill the clearing. He can sense a presence stalking around the outside of the box, the same presence he felt in the vision, and he knows the ceremony has begun.
A prayer is whispered in a tongue he does not understand. Was it ancient Woldian? As the last syllables are spoken there is a sharp crack and he can feel that he is not alone in the box. All kinds of spider, scorpions and small venomous snakes now fill the box with him. Suddenly the frenzy and all begin to bite him at the same time. The pain is like being covered by thousands of sparks all at the same time. Every sting or bite injects poison into his system and he can feel it spread throughout his body. It sets his nerves on fire and at the same time, like the small amounts of poison he takes each night as he prays, it stills the troubles in his mind and forces him to focus. His body resists the venom, almost. As his body is about to fail the test he recalls the gnolls that held him in the clearing. One gnoll held him while the others tore, pounded and bit at him, trying to kill him. He had escaped that, why could he not pass this simple test, one that he subjected himself to nightly? With this small reserve of heroism he manages to shrug off the venom's effects. The bites and stings continue, but they have no further effect on him. After perhaps fifteen minutes he hears another prayer, still in a tongue he does not know, and then the biting stops and the creatures are gone.
His legs feel like rubber and his skin burns like it has been covered in embers, but he rises from the box, steps out over the side and bends down to pick up his robe and and whip. The torchlight has returned and he can see that his skin is a battlefield of bites stings and scratches, in may places swelling like a bee-sting would. He looks up and sees Lilliput's strained face which makes him realize how bad this must surely look, yet he has never felt more alive. He puts the robe and whip back on and waits for the second part of the test.

The Trials of Night
Monday September 21st, 2015 9:16:08 AM

Cameron finds Lilliput praying and calls out to her about the dream. Did she too, have the vision? The cleric of Alemi, though does not reply, but remains in quiet peace, wrapped in prayer. Cameron pauses, thanks her, pauses again and finally departs. Lilliput never stirs.
The following night, Cameron descends the Tree and finds the clearing and prepares it and himself. Lilliput arrives shortly thereafter. She begins praying, quietly, softly, but Cameron can sense the power that underlies the words he cannot quite hear as well.
His ordeal finished, Lilliput wraps a silk blanket about him, her face shows pain, but also understanding. She says nothing and after looking deeply into Camerons eyes, she takes back the silk and returns to the outer area and begins praying once again.

Back in the Tree, Carver attempts to distract himself from worry over Cameron. The attempt is only slightly successful
the others relax and think of what gear they might seek out in the Catacombs to better equip themselves to face the dangers and evils of the Wold. All too soon, their break will likely end

--------------------------------------------------
ooc: I didn't see an answer to my question on the loot earlier, so I'm assuming that the longword I have is part of my share and therefore I get less gold (seems the fair way to do it). Between that and the dues I don't have much to spend at the catacombs. I'll probably pick up some provisions in the general store and such, but if I don't then no big deal. I'm ready to move forward when everyone else is.

13,492 (gems and gear) + 5259 (magic items) + 2015 (+1 longsword) = 20766/6 = 3461 each (then for me it is 3461 - 2015 (+1 longsword) = 1446 - 1000 (dues) = 446 (final gold for Atlas).

DM: longsword would only cost you 50% 1,007.5, leaving you with 1,453.5

Atlas long sword +1 and 1458 gp and 5sp
Carver, Cameron, Mack,'Osul and Crosseye each get 3458 gp and 5 sp
Owen gets the light crossbow +1
The potions are party loot. They are all healing so divide them up so that everyone has some, I would say that Crosseye Owen and Atlas should have the majority of them since the rest of us have some capacity to heal, but I don't care how we split them.

So, yes, finding items you want is cheaper in the long run than finding equivalent valued treasure, selling it, and purchasing what you want new. In this case your second hand sword is effectively half price

'Osul appreciates hearing another perspective on magic, particularly one so divergent as Owen's is to his own - the gift of The Culverwood a hundred miles away, but also right here with them if he understands what he feels and what he has been told about the origins of The Tree of Parting. When Owen then asks about the painting, he responds, "Well, it is something that we need to sit down and investigate, but we have been a little busy with the unexpected but mostly welcome by the WLA, and subsequent training and trading. The ... I could swear he was a leprechaun, called ... Peevish if memory serves. In any case, he gifted us with a boon and this painting which he said was of Deeproot's Departure. That I have come to understand was from the Culverwood - my home - a long time ago. There is a circle of trees that he is leaving, but it is not clear to me if he is leaving purely of his own volition, and this could be influenced by the artist's interpretation. I keep thinking Peevish said something about it benefiting or stirring Deeproot if put in an appropriate place - which I am guessing is in the chapel at the memorial. That, and its being in the apartment, is pretty much all I've gathered, Owen." {belated Sense Motive Check: 24}

When they all meet up again, he relates the discussion and asks if they can view the painting again and possibly discuss where it should end up.

Osul and Owen spend some time with the map. It is indeed magical, although the type and power of the spells upon it elude their examinations. At least for now. While Osul is somewhat familiar with the Culverwood, the depiction in the painting reveals no geographical markers that would help in backtracking the path DeepRoot took to be here. Both men are relatively new to the Tree and bring up to the rest where the best place might be to hang it. Especially given that, if The Tree is indeed DeepRoot as legend says, the map will somehow stir the ancient being. The small shrine is offered as a suggestion

Cameron continues to pray. The night is quiet, still, even the wind seems to respect his need and desire to be at peace upon this new and dangerous journey he has begun.. He can feel her, she is close. A sense of power, of might, of wrath. Cameron can feel her, but then a small voice breaks the silence. A voice of arrogant self rightousness. "I commend your stuborness, impressive. Even for a dwarf." The voice belongs to Lillput. Cameron tries to push her out of his mind. "Wait/" She chuckles, a mocking giggle. "You...you actually think. No you actually believe I would ever accept you here." Her laughter comes stronger and it is now that Cameron realizes the voice of Lillput in within his mind.

Wednesday September 23rd, 2015 12:39:45 AM

Cameron pushes down the urge to cry out, fights it with all of his being. Only with the blood of heroes running through him does he manage to keep his tongue silent. His vision had not been for naught. He had really experienced those emotions and had seen this place, time and company to fulfill his test. That was what this was, the second test of the Avenger, the test of faith. The taunts, the jeers, the distractions would come in a flood, or, like this one, as a single voice of reason in the darkness to try and pull him from his path. He would not relent. His parents blood called out to him. Their friends and companions blood. Morgan's Blood. Vengeance must be taken for all of those deaths. Someone was responsible and that person had to be held accountable. He emptied his mind of all but that burning thought.
Burning....Thought.
He saw again his body, held between the tongs, heated to the proper temperature to be quenched and tempered. He saw again the form he meant to be forged into, the balance upon which she protected the weak, the small and punished the strong, the haughty. Hadn't she punished Gaston when his arrogance nearly got them killed? She had guided them there, shown her signs as subtle toxins, first the snake that struck at Crosseye, then the toads, then the skunk. She led them there, tested Gaston's resolve and then tested Cameron to uphold his bargain to see the man home safely. He had done so. Then she tested his morals to see if he would lie for material gains, and again he was true. Again he spoke the truth about what happened, telling each shameful thing Gaston had done that had been against HIS oath to the Chancers, and the Chancers had found him lacking and rejected him. Cameron had proven faithful. Cameron would continue to prove himself faithful.
He saw himself lowered into the quenching bath of poison and rejoiced as the bath cooled and tempered the metal of his being. He would not warp or bend, he would remain faithful to the cause he had sworn. The whip marks on his breast burned and he remembered the full moon was their secret, their connection, their holy day. The venom quenched his being and burned into him, became part of him, Made him whole.
He would remain faithful...

Atlas is intrigued by the map, "The chapel seems like an appropriate place, but if we don't see something in a month then we should move it to the tavern so that it gets some traffic. Maybe someone will see it and be able to help us solve this puzzle. More people spend their worship time in the tavern with their ale than in the chapel from my experience."

"Hey Mack, thanks for the help with the chest. I look forward to seeing how long before you are able to open it!"

-----------------------------------------
ooc: I have to update my sheet still, but Atlas has purchased a large false bottom treasure chest with an extra difficult lock. I'll come up with some extra gold to reflect all those enhancements to it since there isn't an exact price listed in the list of chests. I want it extra secure and strong with a false bottom and there is no specific info on this type of chest, so I'm making it up here. Let me know if this is acceptable...

False Bottom chest = 52 gp
Superior Lock = 150 gp
Making the False Bottom chest large (there's no talk of how large one is, so I'm adding some cost to make sure it is large) = 5 gp
Making the lock part of the chest and not just a padlock (I figure this is more expensive) = 25 gp
Making the false bottom extra complex to solve = 50 gp
Upgrading the strength to Treasure Chest levels = 25 gp

Total = 307 gp

Thoughts?

"Thanks Atlas! I'd LOVE to play around with that chest and lock! Sounds like a fun challenge." :)

I begin playing away at that lock.

OOC: It looks like I need to beat DC 40, but can try as many times as I like.
I have a +12 on my Disable Device, which means it's impossible for me to beat that. However, I'm a little unclear in this game system if that's truly unbeatable by me then, or if a natural roll of 20 still beats it. ?
If a natural 20 still beats it, it only took me 36 attempts (GREAT rolling there). ;) So, IF that worked, I was able to pick the lock in 179 rounds. (Is a round just a second or 2 in this system?) I leave a note, saying "Mack was here" inside the Chest for Atlas to find later. :)

I'm HOPING a natural 20 does NOT mean success, because in this example, that would seem like a huge flaw in the system. I probably shouldn't really be able to pick that lock, especially in that short of period of time. And if I can't, I eventually let Atlas know that he got one heck of a good lock! I'll keep trying on it later (when I level up a few times). ;)

A round is 6 seconds and 10 rounds make up a minute. I think that is explained in the spellcasting section, but I know that it is correct, based on being able to set the rounds duration to minute and hour long spells.
I BELIEVE, not 100% sure, but believe, that a natural 20 does not beat the DC 40 since it only gets youa 32. Were this a real challenge placed in a module and the DC were that high and the DM meant for you to take a long time to beat it, I would think that each 20 would , i dunno, give you a clue or something and reduce your DC by say 5 for each 20.

OOC: Thanks Cameron. I like the idea of DC reduction for each 20. In the gaming system we play/use, if you roll 20's, you roll again and add them together (subtract 1 if you want to be technically correct), so potentially everything is possible (if not difficult sometimes).

Did we get a decision on how big the pocket openings are for the Pants?

(Well, since they are magic, I say in my opinion, you could touch an object to the opening and it magically fits in, as long as it doesn't overwhelm the weight limit. Just like a bag of holding, the bag you can carry, but you can fit a horse corpse inside it. (as long as the weight limit is not exceeded.)

Owen sits with the group in the tavern, pondering the unrolled picture. "I agree that the painting should go in the chapel. I'd like to keep examining it until Cameron returns from his testing, though."

He stares at the painting for some time, wracking his brains. He casts Identify on it, on the off chance that he is familiar with its magic. Finally, he checks the back of the frame to see if there is anything tucked inside.

___________

I like rolling knowledge checks!

First, the Identify spell: I'll take at least three rounds for this spell. That should enable me to get a sense for the strength of the painting's aura (probably overwhelming), make a Knowledge (Arcana) check to discern the school of any magic affecting it, and make a Spellcraft check to sense its magical properties (which probably won't work, as the painting is an artifact).

Regardless, I make the Knowl. (A) check with a DC of 15+Spell Level. I roll d20(3)+13=16, so... that's unlikely. Then I make the Spellcraft check with a DC of 15+Item's Caster Level. I roll d20(10)+8+Identify Bonus(10)=28.

Second, I'll make a Knowledge (Local) check to recall the local tradition as to how the Tree of Parting appeared; DC of 15. I roll d20(8)+8=16.

Third, I'll make a Knowledge (History) check to recall the same sort of information. This check probably has a DC of 20. I roll d20(17)+10=27.

A Long Night
Thursday September 24th, 2015 12:02:13 AM

Cameron pushes away the easy answer, but the call persists and his attention is redirected. A blast of pain erupts from the back of his head as Morgan's voice roars. "Ye daft cowardly fool. Justice! you want to bring them justice? Death! Slow and horrid death! It is what they deserve. What I demand! What our goddess demands. You weak pathetic muelling orc." Cameron feels Morgans breath, his rage, his cry of vengeance. But Cameron holds to the image he wishes, the image he knows is the truth. Elusive as smoke and shadow, but real none the less. It takes a heroic effort, but the voices subside, the pain slackens and then another voice touches him. This one does not ring in his mind, but from the silent night about him
"Cameron...." It calls softly again, "Cleric of the new goddess" Cameron's wracked body and mind feels itself surrender. The call is beyond peace, beyond soothing, beyond peace....A soft touch encounters his cheek, a beautiful warmth spreads through him and a dawn rises behind his eyes. Cameron opens his eyes and finds himself staring at Lilliput. The Halfling is smiling at him with more concern than almost seems possible to him. "Cameron...It is over." Lilliput returns the silk blanket to Cameron and offers her shoulder to take him back

The group comes to a consensus, hang the painting in the small shrine to Deeproot. That would be done in the morning and perhaps LaughingWater should be asked as well

The night is late, but Carver finds a pair of listeners to his playing. Sarah and Ciyradyl Ilyndrathyl.
Owen casts Identify and studies the painting some more. The power is Strong and he can discern the illusion school all about if. Owwen can recall the following, especially with the help of Crosseye and Mack, who heard the story first hand
"I am Ciyradyl Ilyndrathyl, eldest great great grand child of the Greenwood Druid Ilyndrathyl. Long ago there was an Inn, The House of Parting which served travelers upon the East West Road. Run by a caring husband and wife and their 4 children. They were all skilled in defense, magic and survival and thoroughly blessed by friends. But one dark and terrible night, murder came to The House of Parting and all were slain. The bodies were torn and scattered and the filth that did this set a great fire all about and destroyed their existence utterly. The Greenwood Druid Ilyndrathyl would see this deed undone and traveled north into Culverwood, to it very heart, to the very grove of ancient treants that comprise the heart of Culverwood and beseech them for a sapling to place as a memorial. So moved was the whole of Culverwood upon hearing of the deaths and destruction of Ilyndrathyl's son and grandchildren, that one of the treants, Deeproot, followed the druid back to this place. Here he took root once again and entered an eternal sleep, surrendering himself to become an oak of the old ones and the very tree in which we now stand. The Greenmage of Culverwood has forever since taken on the surname of Deeproot in honor of the great Elder tree so that he shall never be forgotten.

On the Chest, if you are good with those numbers I am. For my vote a Large Chest is 3x5x2
On the pockets, I am taking it to the Rules Board. I would like additional opinions.

Cameron thanks Lilliput and escorts her back to the Leafy Chapel. As they ride the lift up and walk back to the chapel his stride becomes more sure and his pains lessen. True to her word she stood by him. She had just recognized him as a cleric, a peer. The pain wasn't gone, but the elation at having found a new friend, and at having proven his mettle to both Jancassis and himself was euphoric and overshadowed any physical pain he was in.He assures her he is all right and thanks her again for her help. Stpping out of the Leafy chapel and into the dawn he makes his way down to the tavern, to meet his friends for breakfast.
Cameron is swollen, scraped, bitten, stung and pretty much looks like he was dragged behind a horse, through a briar patch full of bees. He could heal all of this and set himself to looking, well, more presentable, but he chooses to remain like this, the way his goddess left him. It is a badge of honor, and he will wear the wounds as proudly as he wears his new Woldian Adventurers League badge. If they discuss the painting he too agrees that the proper place should be the Leafy Chapel. He is sure that after Lilliut sees it and hears how they came by it she would be most pleased to hang it in honor of Deeproot.
He tells Carver that he indeed has passed his test, and now may pursue the Path of an Avenger. This means he will soon have the means to effectively investigate his parent's and Morgan's deaths, and take appropriate steps to Avenge them.
He spends the rest of the day with his friends if they still have shopping to do. If not, he purchases a small tent that can be hung from a tree, cliff face or any other elevated surface . He buys a few other things such as rope and provisions for their next outing. Then he gets some much needed rest.

"Get him a mug of whatever he wants, he needs it I think."

He congratulates him and is willing to listen to whatever he says.
The next morning Carver stops at the Armory and passes over his old bow and picks up the one they crafted for him. (Masterwork Str 16 Composite Longbow) He gives them the 700 gold and then takes back the 35 gold for his old bow. (took 35 rather than 37.5 listed as 1/2 price)
He then spends the day learning the back paths around the tree. You never know when someone may need to get from one place to another by a route that is not the direct way. It may come in handy....

Cameron makes his way to Tree Tops, Lilliput parts ways before getting there and retires to the Leafy Chapel. Carver is there, as are some of the others and despite what he looks like, Cameron is in high spirits. lt is indeed a long night, but now for all the right reasons.

Over the next few days the group unwinds, they study the painting, but learn no more. Lilliput is petitioned successfully to put the painting on display within the chapel. Anyone can come anytime they wish, but no one can stay when the chapel is closed.

There is no immediate or soon after noticeable effect of the painting being there

He takes what ever he learns, if anything, back to the group, "It's time for us to look into this more. There's clearly someone leading these creatures, they don't band together on their own like this. It is an imminent threat to the Tree. I think of the three Liontaur Isle has the best weather, but then they also have Hellhounds to deal with that run in packs. At least that's what I've heard.
I can carry some more weight, if I need to carry another big tent. Benefits of having four legs I guess. I still want to eventually buy a couple bags of holding and make saddle bags. And if we are going, and aren't in a rush, I can happily supplement our rations with nature's bounty. I don't think every single one of us needs to get and carry a tent. The standard one is 20 pounds, so takes up 1 of my 2 pockets.
