Brom and Lanliss are able to sneak closer to the arguing trio without being seen. You can't hear everything but are able to make out several important parts. They seem to disagree on whether or not they can properly raise the turtles. There is some discussion on how they are going to acquire supplies. One of the men seems to want to steal them, the other man and woman would prefer to find a sponsor. Finally the man mumbles something about a 'monster' and stomps off.
As he leaves, Brom and Lanliss notice a little girl looking in their direction. Suddenly, her eyes open wide as if in recognition...

With an ear-piercing scream she runs off, looking for the safety of the cave tunnels. The other children run to follow, and some of the adults as well.
The rest of the adults produce weapons, some of which are very crude and barely qualify. One of the men, who seems to be a leader asks the others if it is the monster. Upon seeing the figures rising out of the water, he yells "Finn! Glenda! Come quick, we gots company!"........
A Semi- Random Meeting..... Saturday October 3rd, 2015 5:17:18 PM
(This is the Story of what is happening in Float City the rest of the Group Turtle Hunts) (i missed Fridays post due to driving too far and being mostly dead when i got home)
Wed, Sep 30 DM JCC
Evred having spent a few days in Plateau City, had heard rumors of profitable ventures out in Float City. The rumors where from huge profits to mere coppers as profit. One of those rumors was a small food shoppe that has turned into a Float City favorite. A place called Nori’s Home Cookin. They make fresh breads with meats and stews cooked inside them. Everyone Evred had talked to that had eaten one of the breads raved about it. They aren’t expensive, but even though others have tried to duplicate it, it just doesn’t end up the same, and those who tried move on to other foods.... Arranging transport to Float City is fairly easy, You head for “The Way Station” which is the teleporter that links Float City and Plateau City. It teleports at set times each day and carries freight as well as travelers. Getting there, a ticket is purchased and you are warned to stay within the blue area. There are Blue, green and yellow areas marked off on the floor. A count down is given and as Zero is said a squeezing pressure is felt and then a popping sound. Suddenly the walls change, the building dimensions are different and the air looses the smell of Plateau City.
A short pudgy gnome says, “Welcome to Float City, my name is Maximillian Burke. It's my job to clear people before entering our fine city.” He is sitting on a tall stool behind a portable desk with a lot of paperwork. He asks a lot of semi important questions, Name, reason for visit, length of stay amungst them. After getting answers and then stamping some papers with a stamp he hands one to you, then files the other copies. “Enjoy your stay in Float City.” With that, you are dismissed and shown the door.
Barratore: Having spent time enjoying some drinks, you decide that while the rest are following the missing turtles, there is still the exploding wagon. While the City Guard may be good at their jobs, you aren’t linked to the City officially and might be able to get more information then they can.... After looking over the destroyed building, which had supposedly been empty at the time, the only other place you know the wagon had been at was “The Way Station” In fact supposedly you and the others actually teleported to Float City with the wagon that blew up. Heading back up the levels, you head to “The Way Station” when you arrive you discover that an arrival has just happened. Not surprisingly, there are no wagons, just boxes of freight and a single person going through “customs” conversing with your “favorite” Gnome in Charge.
Evred is elated to see Float City. He had visited several times as a boy with his father, but this was his first time since his ordination as a Venturer. He had spent several years honing his craft in the trading routes of the Elennian Peninsula, and was now ready for a challenge. He saw the city through different eyes than as a boy -- where before he saw only merriment and exotic peoples and food, he now saw property, capital, collateral, trade, exchange, and bargaining. A multitude were buying and selling, and he loved it.
A wise man can hear profit in the wind.
He adjusted his eye-patch -- unconsciously at this point after so many years -- and made his way down the avenue in front of the teleportation pad. He had written down the instructions the old dwarven tinker in Plateau City had provided, swearing by his ancestors that Nori's Home Cookin' produced the best meat pasties in Yrth. They were simple enough that he could enjoy the sights around him without needing to reference the scrap of paper every other step. Granted, he was enjoying the sights and sounds of the Fence Level. Exotic spices, foods, and music were rubbing elbows with hungover sailors, sweaty laborers, and shrewd faces peering from corners and alleys. He passed one cross-street, and down at the very end he could see the large placard for the Giggling Ghost.
Now this is a conundrum. Do I want a meat pasty from Nori's, and survey a possible investment opportunity, or do I want a drink from the most famous tavern in a thousand miles? Choices, choices.
Barratore pokes his head into the Way Station and looks about. Poor man, he thinks as he sees someone have to be the last chore between the gnome and going home. Well maybe not, Barratore realizes that he is going to be that person. He wanted to look about and there was no way Max would simply leave and let him do that. So how do you convince him of that. Barratore scratches his chin. As the man walks past, the full plate armored minotaur steps aside to make it easier for him and calls to Maximillian. "Max! A moment of your time. You can surely guess the topic." Barratore walks over and bluntly asks Maximillian to tell him about the men who brought the wagons in yesterday

As Evred is finishing up with Maximillian Burke, and his entrance to Float City through customs, this large Minotaur walks into The Way Station and asks a very blunt question. "Max! A moment of your time. You can surely guess the topic." The gnome looks over and a spark of recognition can be seen in eyes. “And here I thought all of you went chasing after them missing turtles everyone is so worried about. As to how the wagon got here, everyone knows it came through here. But that morning when you came though was everything normal? Because both shipments were from bonded carriers. For the foreseeable future, all shipments are coming in only in crates and all are being opened. The haulage carriers in the city are going to busy 20 hours a day until we figure out how that wagon was switched. That was the first thing we found out.Now this is sensitive information, don’t spread it around. Each wagon has marking on it and the explosion didn’t turn it in to complete splinters. Where it it was switched no one actually knows. The drover brought it straight from the freight company, and then stood with your group for the teleport and then after checking through drove it down to the docks.” He then realizes he’s been discussing this not with just Barratore, but the new arrival was also standing there too.... “Too many distractions, you, Evred, if you speak of this with anyone, I’ll have you arrested for divulging City secrets. Barratore, at least I think that’s the name you signed in under, take him with you, explain what’s happened a bit more clearly. I have to have the rest of this shipment checked out, then arrange to have it delivered..... It’s tripled my duties.” You also notice that there are now four guards and at least 10 people opening and checking the contents of each crate that was teleported in.
Having been clearly dismissed, you head outside you realize, not Barratore he already knew, that you are in the northwestern section of the Merchant’s level of the city......

Thu, Evred
Evred takes a few steps outside. His eyebrows are furrowed in puzzlement. "Well... that was interesting. I'm sorry, Mr... Barratore, was it? I'm afraid I don't know what that gnome, Mr. Burke, was talking about. Nor do I care. I have business in the city, and he is quite addled in the brain if he thinks that I am under his command. Good day, and farewell." Evred begins to turn around to walk away.
______________________________________________
Thu, Baratorre
Barratore answers the first response, "Not a fan of sinking. The others can play in the lake."
Barratore nods at max as he speaks, letting the gnome know he hears and understands what it is he is saying. "So the question is, how do you switch a wagon without the driver knowing about it. And we are saying the driver is not in on it as well." Barratore nods again and exits. Looking down at Evred, Barratore shrugs at first but then decides that the gnome would get all rules like on him and intercepts the human from simply walking away. "Hold on. The gnome thinks he can order you about because he can. You want to do any business in this city, I suggest not upsetting one of the people who can completely shut you down. He asked I inform you of what that was all about and so I am. I arrived with companions only a short time ago. A group arrived just in front of us was involved in an explosion at the docks, levelling a building. During the confusion several of the Turtles used to ferry goods and many of the young ones were somehow stolen. My companions and I were brought before the lords of the Float and questioned at length. We were tasked to assist and the rest of them went into the lake following a lead. I came here and now you are up to speed. Don't go spouting of about any of this and good luck on your venture then. I'll be staying at Message in a Bottle for the next few weeks if you need me."
Barratore turns but then stops, this man was a business man. Maybe he had an idea on the switch. Turning back around, "How would you switch a wagon without the driver knowing ?"

Fri, Evred
Evred looks surprised. "Oh, my mistake. When he said, "take him with you," I thought I was being conscripted." He rubs his chin in thought. "He is an important person, you say? Well, being in the good graces of important people is a currency I always appreciate. As Ffloy teaches us, "It never hurts to suck up to the boss." He stares at the cobblestones in thought. "How do you switch a wagon without the driver knowing? Mundane means are limited. Our driver never left the wagon between the freight company and the teleportation station - which I'm going to call the 'telestation' because 'teleportation station' is a mouthful. Further, the wagon and driver at the telestation were surrounded by personnel and your party. The driver was not distracted by paperwork or communing with nature, so there would not have been an opportunity to physically replace the wagon without notice. That leaves magic as the means. I have three hypotheses."
One finger. "Conjuration. The telestations are magical items, vulnerable to manipulation or interference. It is possible someone crafted a spell that allowed them to 'hijack' the casting of that particular teleportation, divert the wagon in question, and replace it with another wagon. The freight company wagons are likely produced by a handful of firms with exact order specifications, so gaining those specifications and producing a duplicate would not be terribly difficult.."
Two fingers. "Enchantment. Our driver's mind was manipulated by magic. There are spells of enchantment which can lie dormant until particular conditions are met, and even spells which can erase memory. Our driver could very well have cooperated in this process, against his will and without any recollection. This, however, would be the least likely means because it leaves too many loose ends and is more complicated in execution. But, you never know."
Three fingers. "Illusion. How was the wagon switched? It was never switched. The markings, mundane or magical, on the wagon and the goods inside could have been obfuscated with a single spell. While Conjuration would require high level powers, and Enchantment would require a great deal of coordination, one single commonly-available Illusion spell could have fooled every person involved in the chain of custody. Switch out the wagon while it is still in the warehouse, cast permanent illusion, and the spell is erased when the explosion detonates."
Evred wiggles his third raised finger. "If I were to wager, I would wager on the simplest explanation."

Glenda then says to you, "I apologize for his behavior. But you must understand what a desperate situation we are in. Between the crooked councilman and losing our money, the only thing we had left was to try and prove we could raise the ferry turtles as well as the city trainers."

"So, as you see, we have very little love for the Overlord. We want to learn more about you ... the people who inadvertently sullied our good name. Understand that we don't blame you for this crime, but we want to understand how things have come to pass. We are willing to listen, which is more that can be said for the ones who sent us after you. To prevent them from all talking at once, Glenda waves her hand to indicate they should let their leaders do the talking. With a shrug of his shoulders, Finn motions for Glenda to tell the tale, and she does.
"The poor of Float City have a hard life, and these last few months things have been getting even worse. A group of us had an idea to make money, something we could work together on and take care of all of our families. We wanted a chance to raise turtles. The kind that are used to ferry people and supplies back and forth to Float City. But the whole thing took a bad turn. We were not allowed to get a license from the city council to raise turtles because we are not formally recognized by the city to do so. So we tried to bribe one of the councilmen to get the license, but he stole our money and gave us nothing. We had literally almost nothing left."
"Then Brennan came up with the idea to steal some turtle hatchlings to raise. If we could just show that we were capable, the city would have granted us the license. We didn't expect anyone would be able to track us back here, but we should have known better. And to make matters worse, some sort of creature attacked us on the way, and made off with all the supplies we got. So now we have no supplies, no money, and no way to deal with the monster or get new supplies. Things are pretty hopeless for us. We know stealing is wrong, but we didn't know what else to do."

The gathered crowd is rather pleased to hear you are willing to hunt down the monster. It will make traveling about the lake easier for all concerned, and not just for these simple folk.
They aren't too happy about being asked to return and face the council however. Finn mumbles something about there not being much justice for thieves. Glenda wants to know what you plan to do with the turtles....and with them.
OOC- with a request from the PTB, John and I are hoping to merge the other two players for this game onto the game board tomorrow. It isn't an ideal time story-wise to do so, but it needs to be done.

Smiling to himself, he knew it wouldn't take much influence to sway favor with both groups. Normally the idea of hunting a monster of the deep would cause him to become sick with dread, but all these years with his friends has given him confidence.
Back to the council member aide, "Can you describe this subordinate of the council. Was this fellow short, fat, tall or thin? What was his breed; elf, dwarf, gnome, human, half-human or half-horse? I've might have met them ... I never forget a face."

Brom nods in agreement with Edson. Their job was to return the turtles, and he didn't need to haul the thieves in, not that he wanted. Brom remembers something from the docks.
"Were you the ones that set off the explosives at the docks?"
Their answer would be a game changer as far as he was concerned. He wasn't the biggest fan of the oppressive laws of the float, but destruction of other's property was another thing altogether.

You see a young human male with chestnut brown hair, closely cropped on the sides and flowing medium-length on top. He has nearly trimmed muttonchops. His eyes are light green, with flecks of silver near the pupil. One of his eyes, and a significant portion of his face, is marred by a slanting scar beginning at his hairline, running over his eye, over his lips, and ending at his chin. He wears a black eyepatch over the milky-white damaged eye. His skin is fair and lightly freckled. He is dressed in sharp business clothes of the latest style. He is tall and lanky, with a wiry frame and straight posture.
In one hand he holds several pearls.
After a few beats of silence getting his bearings, he bows from the waist. "Evred Whitesmith, at your pleasure." His voice is a warm and crisp baritone. "I have been cajoled into assisting Float City in a matter. I take it these pearls are for you? Or perhaps our large associate Mr. Barratore can shed some light."
Big fish, little pond....DMBZ Tuesday October 13th, 2015 9:20:15 PM
Finn describes the council employee for Emrys "He is human, a middle aged man with prominent gray hair on both sides of his head."
Edson expresses interest in returning the turtles, but also in helping these people.
Brom agrees that the priority is to return the turtles, not necessarily to bring the thieves along to face justice. Brennan answers the question about the warehouse explosion. "We don't know who did that, but we took advantage of the confusion to steal the turtles. Honestly, I'm not sure if we could have pulled it off otherwise."
Lanliss readies for action as two people are added to the mix. There is a bit of relief as one of them is known to the group.
Evred introduces himself, and offers everyone in the group a pearl.
The turtles have been found, along with the thieves. Now it is time to determine how best to return them to the city, whether to go hunting for this 'monster', and what if anything to do with these people of this shantytown.....

Barratore looks about and adjusts the to sudden change in scenery. Movement by magical means was slowly and steadily creeping up his list of things to avoid. He surfaces well enough and hauls his large frame from the water. "You would think they could hit their own docks with the spell" he grumbles to no one in particular [Swim 12]
Barratore gestures to Evred, "Everyone, as he said, this is Evred? Wait not Evard? My apologies on that. Not always the best with names."
On the turtles and the thieves, Barratore remains silent, but the minotaur gives them a once over assessment of what they might be capable of doing. [Perception 8]
Barratore is a minotaur. Powerfully built with large black bull eyes and a black diamond mark between them on his snout that stretches from the top of his head to the tip of his nose. His fur is reddish brown with streaks of coarse black hair. he is dressed in full plate armor, heavy steel shield, a black cloak with crimson trim, a brown waist coat and a tri colored torc of gold, silver and copper around his neck. he stands just over 9' and weighs well over 1,200 pounds. His weapon of choice is a bastard sword

"However, I think they'll be reluctant to leave the safety of their town, knowing that there is still a monster out there somewhere. So, we should find and deal with the monster, then return here and take the people and turtles back to the Float. At least, that's my assessment."

As far as a name for the group, I think we should stay within the realm of medieval-style fantasy. I think we should avoid words like association, company, corporation, federation or coalition. They feel and sound way out of place. The style of name should be along the same vein as Brotherhood of the Red Hand, The Shadow Enclave, Coven of the Sword, Order of the Holy Word or Emrys' Devilish Dandies (<- this last one would require everyone to have a complete hair, cosmetic and wardrobe makeover.) Of course, these are merely examples. :)

Big fish, little pond....DMBZ Tuesday October 20th, 2015 10:27:10 PM Emrys wants to be sure of the nereid's motives. When pressed on the matter, she admits she isn't sure if the creature was headed directly towards her village, but her concern of the possibility seems sincere enough. The wound is not a fatal one for her, but is serious.
Brom is itching for a fight
Evred doesn't recall any specific details about the creature, but he doesn't think the nereid is making it up.
Edson longs for simpler days spent on the town
Barratore asks for more details on the creature. "it was believed to not be a dumb brute or an animal, so I suggest caution", says Neermala.
Lanliss keeps a watchful eye for any movement
Evaris offers more healing, which Neermala declines. She seemed reluctant to join with the group in following the monster, but changes her mind. "Come on, it went this way." Barratore activates enlarge on himself and then readies an attack on the creature.
Emrys sends a pair of spells at the creature, hoping to blind it.
Evaris casts a defensive spell
Edson readies his bow and gets off a few shots at the creature. (Ranged Attacks Underwater: Thrown weapons are ineffective underwater, even when launched from land. Attacks with other ranged weapons take a –2 penalty on attack rolls for every 5 feet of water they pass through, in addition to the normal penalties for range.) Both shots miss due to range. (50 feet at time of shots)
Evred casts a magic missile to damage the creature, then backs off hoping to stay out of range.
Lanliss tries to hide and withdraw. (Do you have hp damage? your post header indicates so)
Brom joins Barratore at the forefront, and also readies his weapon. (You receive an AoO, resolve it in your next post)
The creature avoids one of the glittering spells, but is hit by the other. Enraged, the creature continues on and tries to blindly bite around where it thinks its' targets were. As the creature moves in, Barratore slams it solidly with his sword. Brom attacks it as well. The magic missiles slam into the monster, not being impeded by the water.
The creature lashes out, knowing there is food nearby. (3 attacks each resolved against Barratore and Brom) Barratore manages to avoid all hits, the blindness impeding the creature's strikes. Brom also narrowly avoids all hits, but they were close calls. (50% miss chance due to blindness)
Barratore and Brom notice the water around the creature is noticeably warmer than the water in the surrounding area........

ooc: 1. Dead bodies do not get saving throws. Otherwise casting raise dead or animate dead would require a saving throw. 2. The spell target is 'one creature,' but being dead doesn't make it an object. Raise dead targets 'one dead creature.' A 'dead creature' means that it differentiates from 'living creatures.' So 'creatures' is composed of the subsets 'living creatures' and 'dead creatures.' 3. Therefore, the dead creature is a valid target and does not get a saving throw.
Just go with it. I'm going to dispel the effect when we get back and sell it for spell components and as an exotic food. :)

Are there any more creatures of this type Lanliss asks Neermala

Emrys is able to determine that the creature is definitely deceased. Evred casts polymorph on the creature, to save the body for evidence if needed.
Edson and Lanliss toss a few questions at the nereid. Neermala responds as best she can. "Your people might call it a water hydra, but our people know it by a different name, Scylla. If you mean are there any more in the lake, well.....all I can say is I hope not. I need to report this to my village, and make sure they are warned. I thank you for destroying the beast." With a final parting thought, she begins to swim away, this time headed in the direction you expect her village lies in. "It's too bad you didn't leave the carcass, it would have fed many of the smaller denizens of the Lake."
With the creature defeated, and the turtles found it would appear that things are falling into place for the group's current mission.......

With the creature dead, Brom looks on with a little disappoint. "I was hoping for a little more fight out of that thing." He is a little surprised when Evred turns the beast into a fish.
"Anything else?" He says as a general question. "If that's it, let's get those turtles back to the surface and welcome Evred proper-like."
Before the water-folk swims away, Brom says with a smile "If ya see Demetria, tell her I said hi an' can't wait ta see her again."

"We need to get the turtles, but we also need to escort the villagers to the city, so we can find the man who took their money," Evaris says.

Evred stows the hydra-mackerel in his haversack and gives it a pat. "Forgive my ignorance, but how did the villagers get to their village in the first place? Who were those villagers in the first place, and what were you doing with them?"

Edson and Brom notice Neermala's smile as she swims away. She says nothing, but the mischievous smile leads you to believe the message will be conveyed.
Emrys voices concern over the lost supplies. Searching the general area on the bottom of the lake could take days, if not longer. Another solution will be needed, or the supplies may simply be lost.
Evaris is ready to escort the turtles and the villagers back to the city.
Lanliss laments the complexities of life.
Evred asks some questions. The second can be answered by the group, the first however, is a very interesting question indeed. How did the villagers get the turtles to the underwater caves.........?

Barratore comes out of his internal revelry and focuses back in on what the group is talking about. "Up for whatever you need. "I think the Turtles and our new city should be near the forefront of what we should do. Well that and properly greeting Evred."
Barratore has been off and knows he doesn't know a whole lot about what is going on and so he is real good with letting the others make the move here

Evaris [AC 20; HP 74/74] [Bless] Friday October 30th, 2015 12:48:32 AM
"The villagers confessed to stealing the turtles from their proper caretakers in the Floating City," Evaris tells Evred. "They claim that it was an act of desperation after a man claiming to be a Council member accepted a bribe from them and didn't come through. If this allegation is true, it will have serious consequences--and then, of course, there's the matter of the theft. Pantheon expects us to strive for justice, though I confess in this case it may be difficult to see a clear path."

With the young man satisfied that his message will be delivered, he turns his attention to less fun things...the turtles. "Alright, I'm kinda gettin' done with this." He says. "We go this way." He continues pointing off in the direction the beast came. "Check to see if the lair is there. If it's there, get the supplies. If not, get the turtles and head back. And if those people make me chase after them, it'll more than the turtles they'll lose..." He leaves it at that.

resupply....DMBZ Friday October 30th, 2015 9:13:29 PM
Searching for the supplies proves more difficult than originally expected. The area on the lake bottom near where the battle took place is devoid of anything that resembles the supplies. You have not yet come upon a lair, but may continue searching if you wish to do so.
Some survival checks should lead you back to the cave network, as you know the general direction in which they are located.
Evaris is concerned over the resolution of the turtle theft. Some discussion on the matter may be in order.
Evred Whitesmith (Tanner) HP 103 -- AC 21/15/18 -- F+10 R+8 W+9 -- CMD 17 Friday October 30th, 2015 10:00:48 PM
Evred rubs his chin in thought. "These people, presumably, were deceived into thinking that a Council member of Float City was extracting a bribe from them. When they did not receive the service that was exchanged for the bribe, they stole the turtles as recompense. While that would be extrajudicial, it is in the spirit of fairness. However, the fact that they were deceived does not erase their crime. As Ffloy teaches, Always know what you're buying. Float City did not steal from them, and these people had no right to steal from Float City. Transferring their victimhood to another is not justice."

I don't agree with you. Lanliss says. I think what they did was right but a bit reckless snd don't forget they were hopeless and don't know how everything work at the float citu kn terms of corruption and scams.
Evaris [AC 20; HP 74/74] [Bless] Saturday October 31st, 2015 12:47:28 PM
"It was wrong to take the turtles," Evaris says, "but understanding the totality of the situation changes things a bit. It would certainly be an injustice to hand down a standard punishment for theft, knowing everything that we know. But it would be equally wrong to ignore these actions completely. No matter what their justifications, they have still harmed the city. And possibly the turtles, though we can't know that for sure."
