DM Ken Waterfront Map

"O' course ye can stay aboard the ship. Jess' tell me where it is we are going, and we shall set sail as soon as my contacts there can give me a safe berth. There's also the ships fee of 300 gold pieces per traveler."

The captains face looks truly saddened as he holsters his silver weapon and wrings his hands over a heavy golden necklace.

"Desperate times, I'm afraid, call for desperate prices. I be risking my ship."

Meanwhile, the stoic fist of Tiger company seems unsure. After several long moments in prayer to Pantheon, god of justice, he finally relents. The snake thumbs are wary of just letting them go.

"It's a shame you were given this wolfs word, tiger cubs. Merina Swain would have loved to meet you. "

(Merina Swain is the commander of Snake Regiment, and de facto spymaster of the Fist.)

You now have a day at the minimum to shop, sell, or prepare for the next leg of your journey.

Trayvin isn't sure that letting the Tigers leave is the best course of action either. "All of you tigers, should consider carefully the second chance you are being given here. Consider that maybe you were on the wrong side of this. I hope you don't do anything foolish."

"Maybe the captain would be willing to take some of these items off of our hands instead of gold? I'm sure some of the things we would have sold anyway could be useful to the captain of a ship."

OOC: I forgot the name where we are going. :}

"Hmm... I guess it takes a while for word to reach the port and back.' Nikolai muses when he is told they'll have a day of waiting. But 300gp apiece?

"I understand that times are tough. It is that way for all of us. I'd like to make a deal. 300 gold for passage for each of us if, and only if, our passage goes uneventful. If you are attacked we'll certainly come to the aid of the ship and your crew but that will cost you too. If you or any of the crew get sick or injured, we can heal, but it will cost you. And don't take us wrong, we aren't in this for the money, it is purely a matter of proper business. You render a service and so do we. As a matter of fact, some of us have magical skills that can make your food taste like your mother used to make, rid your clothes of fleas and other biting vermin, make you smell good for the ladies, clear your ship of rats, and so forth, all at your disposal, for a price, " Nikolai says with a grin.

Nikolai bids the Tiger Thumb farewell and suggests he stay clear of the area for a while. "See if you can find the other three. Discuss your roles in the Mailed Fist or in Neutronis' kingdom."

Nikolai thanks the Snake Thumb for honoring Nikolai's word of safe passage to the Tiger men. "On behalf of the Wolf Regiment, give our regards to Commander Merina." It then occurs to him that Commander Merina, being the defacto Spy Master of the Mailed Fist, that she might know of a contact where they are headed to that could help them get past patrols and such.

In a low whisper he asks the Snake Thumb, "You wouldn't perchance know of anyone in Neutronis' camp that could help us get past patrols, or at least know where we can find him, would you? Wolf Regiment will gladly share the honor of putting an end to this internal war with anyone who can help."

With that business taken care of, all that is left is for the ship captain to show them their quarters and to work out the details of their Passenger Contract. A good rest and with a day to spare, they can unload the the extra gear they don't need.

OOC: whoever is best at negotiating and bargaining hop in and do your thing. We want to make this captain work for his money. LOL! :)

Header still reflects Haste. I'll try to remember to fix that next post.

Trayvin, Nikolai, Prudence, Anna, and Michael all assail the captain with pleas for alternative payments. For a brief moment, a dark brooding look begins to cross his features, but before he can speak his mind Anna and Michael point out their services might be more valuable than gold, not to mention the haul of masterwork long swords. Tinker and Revan introduce themselves, and Karavik is silent on the matter.

"Well, yes. Those swords an' weapons be a spot better than anythin' we have aboard. An' it be a dangerous time to be a captain who breaks rules."

He looks over the stuff, squinting in the dark.

"Give me the crossbows and scimitars. That be about even, and I'm givin' ya what ya'd pay for em, not what a merchant would buy em fer. "

He looks at Prudence and combs his beard with his hands.

"An' if the lil' miss here would accompany me to dinner, perhaps I could let you keep the blades?"

Tinker harrumphs. He nearly interferes before pulling back and waiting. Prudence can take care of herself and doesn't need a protector. He thinks Gargul told him that. The dwarf actually smiles, and puts the crossbows and swords in one bundle for the Captain.

The rest is loaded in a rented wagon to take to the merchants and convert to cash (less the items the Agents have claimed).

As an afterthought, Tinker calls out to Nikolai. "The Snakes have the best spies, Nikko. Maybe we can get some more information from an officer? Since they know what's what and they are against Nutrius, that's just another nail in the coffin, yes?"

"Just dinner, right?" Pru says. "I'd hate for there to be any kind of misunderstanding between us."

Aiming carefully, to avoid hitting anybody, she casts a Burning Hands and sends a sheet of flame from her outstretched fingers.

Anna says, "While I wouldn't mind having one of these fine scimitars, we need passage, so I would forfeit my claim if it would help us get where we need to go."

"On the other hand if we can trust our good captain, to be a gentleman and this is something that you want to do Pru, I wouldn't say no to having one of those blades, but no blade is worth doing something you are uncomfortable with...Then again I do have that wand if the captain is less than gentlemanly. I am sure Eberyon's divine fire burns just as hot as Pantheon's..." Anna looks sternly at the captain.

while still amused about the interplay he realizes that his attempt to cover his laugh is not working too well when Anna gets snarky with the captain, He gives up and just lets it loose.

The burning hands spell inflames him even more and he falls to his knees, now laughing so hard he is having trouble breathing and gulps air between bouts of mirth. Pru is so innocent, so caring and in her own way a wallflower...if said wallflower shoots fireballs and wields a spear. to look upon her discomfort, should provoke his protective side, but it's just all so ludicrous..it's just hilarious. between guffhaws he manages to croak out

HAAAAAAA...GASP! I...hah hah...can...GASP...act...HOWL...as.... gasp...chaperone.
He forces it down for a moment and with barely restrained glee says seriously
in fact, I'd pay to be there for the dinner....HAHAHAHA
He loses it again and makes a pitiful sight leaning on Tinker for support.

"Pru, it's up to you. I trust you can keep him on the level. But if you really wish not, we can do without the scimitars. But if you do, rest assured we will be close."

To the captain he confirms the deal for passage, minus a scimitar if Pru agrees to have dinner with him. "She is a fire mage, and ships burn real easy like, so be sure you are the perfect gentleman," he warns.

With a wave, he's gone, leaving you and the Snake Fists alone. The Snake thumb waves goodbye also.

Nikolai laughs at Trayvin's comment. "You need that spell for Commander Neutronis more'n Konrad. He's just being what he's always been. Considering Pru's safety, a diner with the captain might have gotten us some information not easily gotten otherwise. However, I am relieved that the captain chose against it,"

Nikolai assists Tinker with the task of selling the remaining loot and is glad that his fist now has some extra cash on top of the passage paid for. They may need some extra cash for bribes and other enticements once they get to the other side.

With the money distributed, Nikolai sets up some rules:
"If you want to do some shopping, make sure you don't go alone. Best if we all go together. There may be other Tiger Fists out there."

When they finally settle down on the ship:
"Whether on land or on a ship, we keep our guard up. We set up watches just as if we were camping out on land. Just as the captain said, there are pirates and other stuff in these waters."

Michael gets over his mirth and pauses to reflect on what just transpired. He looks at Pru. Then looks again, this time not with the eyes of a. Brother in arms, but this time with the eyes of a man. He had never really noticed till now just how attractive Pru was, for a human. He becomes a bit concerned , by his reckoning she is squandering a very valuable resource by not learning how to use her womanly charms to bend men to her will. He wonders if he should broach the subject with her....but decides against it, she had an evil gleam in her eye when the flames shot out of her hands.

Michael helps sell the loot around town using his appraisal skill to help out.

Michael is absolutely sure the value of their gear is correct. If he wants to try and snipe a little extra in trade, he would need to make either a bluff, to convince someone to pay more, or a profession: merchant to find a great deal from a hard up buyer.

Prudence and Tinkers opinions of the good captain have darkened, while Nikolai just sees a spade as a spade. Anna reflects on how easily a humans mind can change. Karavik snaps out of his daydream and figures a bards as good as any entertainment while at sea. Trayvin is reserving a charge of the wand for the Cap'ns libido, should it act up again.

You arrangements are simple. A belowdecks section of a larger berthing has been sectioned off with sheets and set aside. Hammocks are hung for each of you. Sadly, the donkey is crammed into your space as well.

The next morning, the Knuckleduster is full of activity. Stores are being brought on board and a number of new sailors are checking in.

Sprat, a small halfling with abnormally large muscles, greets you as you wake from your tightly packed sleeping area. He has ration sacks set aside for each of you.

"These are for the trip, seein' as fare is included."

He offers a smaller sack to Michael, and when our resident rogue reaches for it, it drops to the ground.

"Woops. Please fergive me."

He turns and heads topside, calling over his shoulder.

"Captain says we got a messenger back sooner than expected. We are clear to leave either tonight or tomorrow morning, your call, seein' as you are our guests. I'm Sprat, the first mate. Let me know when you know. I'll be at the con."

OOC: On 10/6 Nikolai said:
'Nikolai thanks the Snake Thumb for honoring Nikolai's word of safe passage to the Tiger men.

Was there any response there?

If Not:
IC: "I need to get some common clothes to go with my new duties and Anna and Pru need pretty clothes and some jewelry pieces. I say we go first find the Head Snake commander in this area and see what intelligence we can gather about Neutronis' camp then get the outfits."

For himself he purchases a disguise kit and a travelers outfit. He could rely on his hat, but Neutronis will probably have magic detection protections and True Seeing devices that would render the hat useless.

Pru and Ana will need Noble's outfits with some jewelry accessories.

The 'butler' will need a courtier's outfit. The rest something other than their uniforms.

Nikolai suggests they all go together and get the clothes and talk to the Snake commander. If there is no agent they can contact once they land, then they'll just wing it.

But any Intel is better than none.

DM Ken - Halfling rivalry.
Monday October 12th, 2015 9:16:08 PM

After the initial meeting, Snake Fist is like a ghost, and difficult to track down. It seems it would take some invested time in finding them a second time. The Agents certainly have that option.

Nikolai recalls asking the Snake thumb about any contacts Merina might have had inside Pavillions camp. The reply wasn't encouraging. They have had one or two, but they get ferreted out very quickly. It seems that Neutronis has a solid ring of counter-espionage.

Michael tries to get a feel for the other halfling, and with his best guess, it seems there's a bit of rivalry in the first mate, who may be trying to establish himself as Alpha Halfling. For his part, Michael is able to add an extra 35gp to his pockets with his expert haggling.

Anna has no problem with her berry detailed plan of the day.

In your errands to and from the ship, you come across the seemingly bored first mate once or twice. All your costume supplies are gathered and roles discussed. The third time, the men are in a circle throwing some dice around.

Sprat looks up, "Time to go?"

Pru is not having a good day. First she had to fight some fellow Mailed Fist soldiers, which made her stomach want to do flip-flops. Then there was that horrible ship captain, who made her want to go hide someplace.

And now her companions were concocting some elaborate scheme which involves her, Prudence Gundle, pretending to be some fancy noble lady. Pru isn't even sure how this came to be the plan, but if her Thumb wants her to pretend to be some kind of noble, Pru will give it her best effort. The near-certain feeling that her best effort is going to be nowhere near good enough makes her stomach start acting up again.

And then Anna asks her about fashion of all things, and Pru swallows a cackling, hysterical laught. "Well, I know that fashion is a wicked poison of pride and vanity which looks to ensnare the righeous and lead them down the path to sin and debauchery," she says. "Not helpful, I know, but that's what I was taught."

"I spent most of my life in the forests of Fargunia. I didn't really have much need for finery. It would just get ruined in the woods. In fact this is the first dress I'll ever own. They didn't seem that practical. All those layers and not one will do a lick of good against a weapon. Also I do not believe that a dress would hold up that well against mud, brambles or grass stains. " Anna says to Pru.

Anna does not know fashion either so she finds herself trying to decide between a large puffy orange dress that looks ridiculous or an almost scandalously short cut jade gown that looks potentially practical in that while it certainly has less layers it would allow for decent mobility if forced to fight or flee.

"Anyone else have an opinion on a dress if I am supposed to be a noble lady in waiting? Is it supposed to be warm or cold where we are going?" Anna asks the other agents.

A short time later Anna returns to the ship.

"I'm okay to go" Anna says to Sprat.

Michael grins a bit at the thought of a petty rivalry, So odd, almost like a comedy, after the last few weeks. A poem he heard one of the older Mailed Fist members comes unbidden to his mind.

"Me that 'ave been what I've been --
Me that 'ave gone where I've gone --
Me that 'ave seen what I've seen --
'Ow can I ever take on
With awful old Fargunia again,
An' 'ouses both sides of the street,
And 'edges two sides of the lane,
And the parson an' gentry between,
An' touchin' my 'at when we meet --
Me that 'ave been what I've been?

Me that 'ave watched 'arf a world
'Eave up all shiny with dew,
Kopje on kop to the sun,
An' as soon as the mist let 'em through
Our 'elios winkin' like fun --
Three sides of a ninety-mile square,
Over valleys as big as a shire --
"Are ye there? Are ye there? Are ye there?"
An' then the blind drum of our fire . . .
An' I'm rollin' 'is lawns for the Squire,
Me!

Me that 'ave rode through the dark
Forty mile, often, on end,
Along the Cthonia Range,
With only the stars for my mark
An' only the night for my friend,
An' things runnin' off as you pass,
An' things jumpin' up in the grass,
An' the silence, the shine an' the size
Of the 'igh, unexpressible skies --
I am takin' some letters almost
As much as a mile to the post,
An' "mind you come back with the change!"
Me!

Me that saw Bryn Baraz took
When we dropped through the clouds on their 'ead,
An' they 'ove the bows over and fled --
Me that was through Di'mond 'Ill,
An' Pieters an' Springs an' Heldfast --
From Dundee to Vereeniging all --
Me that stuck out to the last
(An' five bloomin' bars on my chest) --
I am doin' my Sunday-school best,
By the 'elp of the Squire an' 'is wife
(Not to mention the 'ousemaid an' cook),
To come in an' 'ands up an' be still,
An' honestly work for my bread,
My livin' in that state of life
To which it shall please God to call
Me!

Me that 'ave followed my trade
In the place where the Lightnin's are made;
'Twixt the Rains and the Sun and the Moon --
Me that lay down an' got up
Three years with the sky for my roof --
That 'ave ridden my 'unger an' thirst
Six thousand raw mile on the hoof,
With the Vaal and the Orange for cup,
An' the Brandwater Basin for dish, --
Oh! it's 'ard to be'ave as they wish
(Too 'ard, an' a little too soon),
I'll 'ave to think over it first --
Me!

I will arise an' get 'ence --
I will trek South and make sure
If it's only my fancy or not
That the sunshine of Fargunia is pale,
And the breezes of Fargunia are stale,
An' there's something' gone small with the lot.
For I know of a sun an' a wind,
An' some plains and a mountain be'ind,
An' some graves by a white stone fence,
An' a Taurian I've fought 'oo might give
Me a job where I ever inclined
To look in an' offsaddle an' live
Where there's neither a road nor a tree --
But only my Maker an' me,
And I think it will kill me or cure,
So I think I will go there an' see."

He chuckles a bit, and resolves to let the first mate have his moment of glory, Having seen death and stife, the price of conflict is too high for something so silly.

Aid Another (Knowledge Local) Noble's Dress +2 = 7

Nikolai isn't a whole lot of help in choosing a dress but does the best he knows from what his own mother wears to Mailed Fist Officer parties.

"The Lady-in-waiting cannot wear something that takes the attention away from the Lady. This jade dress will certainly help in keeping all eyes focused on you and distract them from looking closely enough at the rest of us, but you might also attract some unwanted attention. Go with the orange dress," Nikolai suggests while failing to keep from blushing.

"Pru, we have confidence that you will be a good noble lady. Now remember, you and Ana will need to treat the rest of us like low-born servants, and except for the butler, we are not to speak unless spoken to. That will be the hardest part for sure," Nikolai laughs.

Just before returning to the ship Nikolai purchases a bale of hay for their donkey.
"I don't know if it will be cold or hot where we are going, or how long it will take to get there," he confides.

When they encounter the ships crew playing dice, Nikolai takes the opportunity to get to know them a little better and perhaps make some friends. He asks if he can join them in their game.
"Yep, almost ready. Hey, what's your game here? What's the stakes? Mind if I join?"

During the dice tossing, he asks how long the trip should take and if the crew could use something they've not the funds to purchase. "We would like to help in manning the ship but none of us have that experience. We don't like to just sit around idle while you guys do all the work. Is there anything we can get here to help? Some spices for the cook to liven up your meals, perhaps?

The dwarf's thoughts darken when Nikolai tells the team what the Snake Sergeant told Nikolai. "If they are good at counter-espionage, this scheme isn't gonna get far. We may have better luck just walking up and asking to speak to Pavilion. Either that, or turning around and getting the information we have so far to Palance."

The men look at Nikolai with a grin, and go ahead and let him into the game.

"10 gold a round, matey. We got time for a few more rounds, anyways. Ya make up to three throws with the dice. Closest to 10 wins the round. Ties go to the pot for a playoff round between the tied folks."

They hand Nikolai the cup and the three six sided dice. Anyone else interested is given space to throw as well.

Karavik, Tinker, Anna, and Prudence continue on ironing out the plan of a Noble Prudence, despite Tinkers misgivings.

Karavik thinks the orange dress reminds him of a noble merchant family from the Isles to the south west. It's far enough out of the way perhaps, that it would take some time to discover their falsehood, unless magic were involved.

He also writes friends and allies and takes the precautions of labeling his letter to Qualtmie as a love letter. Hopefully, the ruse is enough.

Those pondering distance and climate are reassured when they remember that travel across the Bay of Elenna is swift. Three days tops and they will arrive in a climate nearly identical to their own, though the cold air from the infamous Shadow Mountain might serve to drop the temperature to chilly.

They are also still well ahead of the invasion schedule Neutronis afforded Alithmar. Uncharacteristically, Michael decides the let the other halfling have his tiny victory. How many griffons, dissenters, and enemy soldiers has that little sailors killed? Probably not half as many as Michael.

With everyone aboard with no further plans ashore, the Knuckleduster slips out of it's moorings and down the pier. The salt air is refreshing and crisp, and even the surly sailors and fighters aboard the Knuckleduster are in high spirits.

As the ship races past the last fingers of land, a commotion calls the shiphands to attention. There is some muttering, and men make superstitious signs of luck and warding. Against the beautiful backdrop of the coastal scenery and early morning sun sparkling on the ocean, a noose tied to a hangman's stand holds a single burning man, and black smoke dances darkly against the blue sky. It is flanked by three empty nooses.

Hanging there is the young thumb of Tiger Fist, long dead. At his feet is a large white sign with painted black letters. "Wolves: The only tiger you can trust is one with no fangs."

"Wouldja lookit that?!", calls Captain Konrad. The rest of the men comment under their breaths, then go about their work. A few seconds later, the familiar rattle of dice in a cup clatters on the decks.

His eyes lite up but keeps calm. He grew up playing such games of chance with his friends but not for money. If he won too much money the sailors would hate him but if he won once and then lost some also...

When the ship sets sail Nikolai gathers his Fist together at a spot on deck where no one else can hear.
"I know some of us are not too sure about this plan. I know that sneaking around and trying to get close that way would be near impossible considering what Snake has told us of their security. Going in the open at least lets us see everything and talk to people. A widowed noble lady wanting to know what her standing will be in the new order seems to have a better chance to get through. However, tonight I'll use our scroll to communicate with Commander Palance. We'll tell her our plan and what we've found so far. If she agrees with it, we go on, if she calls it off, we have time to head back.

Passing by the burning man, Nikolai feels sorry for him but he knows they did what they could.
"I'm sure it was the Snake. Only Snake knows enough details of the battle and that we'd be passing by this point. We told the guy to get out of town. We did our part. Let's just hope the other three got out fast enough. I can't blame the Snake for it, but I wished they hadn't. I just hope they had good enough reason, like he was going to inform Neutronis."

Nikolai eyes the dice playing sailors. If he knew how to 'cheat' to loose, he'd give it another try.

He could have been a good person just caught up on the wrong side of the conflict. Spies are traditionally dodgy. I know that good intel is important in a military operation, but at what cost does that come with? Is it right to use torture to uncover the planned slaughter of innocence? It's different when there is a contract and we have something or someone to protect or someone to save or something to investigate, but this the fighting with in the Fist it is needless. How many more of our brothers and sisters will meet the fate of the tiger thumb? Will any of us? I can become a tiger with fangs, is the message meant to fracture our fist?"

"It isn't Justice anymore. I can see the point in showing the Kings and Nobles that one doesn't break a contract with the Mailed Fist without dire consequences. On the other hand, I've never heard of a case where someone just didn't want to pay either. Up until now everyone has honored a contract. How this is being handled is the problem. If indeed Neutronis is intent on invading Alithmar and form his own kingdom, that certainly falls way outside the boundaries of any punishment the Fist would normally do.

What bothers me is not so much the split, but the violence. Commander Neutronis could just as easily take the Fists that agree with him and go do what he wants to do and leave the rest alone. I've not heard that any of the other Commanders were mounting a force to stop him, Palance wasn't in any case. So his commanding units to seek out and kill so-called defectors makes no sense whatsoever. That bothers me the most."

Nikolai watches Ana take to the air in the form of an eagle and soar across the waves hunting for fish.
"Ei!" he yells. "Try a pelican next time. They are the real fishing birds and can bring in quite a few in that big pouch or theirs!"

Pelicans may not have the grace of eagles, but sure fish better without worrying about drowning.

Nikolai's dice experiment is a near success. He hits a nine, but another crewman scores a perfect 10. It doesn't seem anything but luck, though there is skill in choosing how many dice to roll. The mans first roll is a five, he rolls a second dice, and hits a five again. None of the other fellows comes close, so he rakes in the 60 gp pot.

Each of the Agents handles the depressing sight of the young burning cleric in their own way. Tinker's stoic silence breaks down, and he swears to meet the lad once his own life has ended. She then raises a flaw in the potential plan knowing what they know now of the terrain on the other side.
"Won't it be strange to those at the siege lines that 2 noblewoman and their retinue are traipsing through the wilds, without any mounts, carriages or other means of conveyance aside from a donkey? "I had hoped we'd land near a town where we could buy or rent a carriage. However, in a war torn zone, it would not be unusual for people to be afoot, their mounts and carts being confiscated for the 'war effort'. Which brings up a good idea for our visit to Neutronis' headquarters. We were traveling, minding our own business, when some ruffians that went by the name of Sons of Neutronis stole our carriage."

Nikolai enjoys Karavik's entertainment.

That night, when most of the crew is asleep, he takes the Fist to a quiet corner and pulls out the scroll Commander Pallance gave them. After someone experienced in using scrolls unleashes the magic that calls upon their Commander, Nikolai waits for Pallance to answer, then gives her the main points of their trip so far:
1) there are spies within the Citadel
2) the citadel is being watched and studied carefully for weaknesses
3) a group called the Sons of Pavilion has been ordered by Neutronis himself to capture and either persuade other Fist members to join him or kill them.

Then he tells her of their plan to disguise themselves as a Noble's entourage seeking Pavillion for reparation of stolen equipment and goods.

Then he asks for either approval to continue on, another plan, or to return.

Revan is tall for a dwarf, with short cropped brown hair. He has a beard of brown, tied in a braid so as not to be caught on anything. He has tan, tough skin from hours upon hours in the sun. He's quite broad with muscled arms, but walks with surprising grave for a dwarf. He never looks fully relaxed and his eyes are constantly moving. He is wearing clothing with a combination of Browns and greens over his breastplate. His plate is far from shiny as he makes attempts at concealment. His weapons though,do seem to be kept in semi perfect condition.

I think Tinker has the best idea. Get there, see what really is going on and confirm if the Sons of Neutronis are legitimately under Neutronis' or simply believe it. If Neutronis says that the message is a counterfeit, then we've got some ground to work upon. If he confirms that it is from him... well, we'll have a lot of ground to work upon."

Plans are discussed finally, and the consensus is made that more information is needed. Some room is left for Neutronis to prove himself not all bad, but it's a very small amount to wiggle indeed. Prudence and Karavik share a dance, in the name of science. Nikolai and Tinker, Michael and Anna discuss strategy. Trayvin points out they still have to escape alive, even if they manage to kill Neutronis. Revan makes it completly clear his good friend is a war-pony, not a mule.

The first day of sailing draws to a close, and with it most of the hardest part of being underway. The second day is a jumbled mess of bored brawlers spitting and cursing. At one point, a giant wheel of cheese is brought out and turns are taken punching the poor round of bacteria to see who can leave the biggest dent.

The halfing first-mate makes it a point to wait until Michael is watching, then flicks a dagger into the cheese wheel, sinking it to the hilt.

The good captain has takes a moment to check on the Agents.

"Is there anything else ye be needin? There's a cove of smoother water we can wait at if you need to delay fer whatever reason. Otherwise, we should be there just after the noon tomorrow."

It is readily apparent that boredom, rum, and a ship full of pirates might not be the least explosive situation imaginable. Although everyone has gotten along well to this point, Karavik resumes his entertainments. No sense in letting a good story sit idle in his mind. A little self-deprecating humor may lighten the mood as well.

As to the strategy being laid out, Karavik isn't sure how best to approach the situation. It wasn't long ago that he was one of Neutronis' men, even if he had misgivings about that post himself. Perhaps his prior affiliation could be levered to help the group now though.

He plays with the manacles just for a while, but ends up hanging around close to Prudence for most of the trip.

He listens to Revan, and stoically waits his turn to speak. "Daemar Torvalsson, called Tinker. Wolf Regiment, First Agents. We tend to get the missions that don't fit nicely in any one sections assets." He looks around the ship of brawlers going from a town in civil war to a siege in a foreign land as the Mailed Fist implodes. "Like now."

The Scroll of Sending is read and the magic activated. Nikolai tries to be brief as he knows the spell can carry only so many words.
"Neutronis has spies within the Citadel and keeps close watch over your defenses looking for weakness. A group called the [i]Sons of Pavilion are a fanatical group that roam the countryside on orders by Neutronis to kill any who don't join him. We plan to disguise ourselves as a noblewoman and her entourage to try to get into his camp and close to Neutronis. What we do once there, we don't know. Should we continue on this plan? Any news we need to know?"

Nikolai would like to put their toughest brawler to the test but they are too close to their objective to risk it. He only half pays attention to Pru's dance lesson. He's seen these dances plenty of times as a boy at the Mailed Fist Officer's Ball. He'd learned most of the moves from his older sister when she was getting ready for her 16th birthday party. But he was not a showoff and let Karavik give the lessons.

When the lessons are over, Revan engages Pru in conversation. Nikolai sees an opportunity to learn more about their newest member.

"I could not help overhearing you are from Bear Regiment. I understand that parts of the Bear Regiment were involved in the contract to rid the area of marauding giants. The word has it that the refusal to honor that contract and pay up is what has caused all this. The word we have is that Neutrnis expects to take Alithmar as payment. This has caused a rift in the Mailed Fist, who's charter states that the Mailed Fist observes the Laws of Kingdoms and taking a city as payment subverts such laws. There must be another way to get them to comply."

Karavik does a fine job lifting the mood. One of the sailors even tips him with 11 gold! Michael is strangely silent.

Nikolai starts talking once the sending spell is active.

"Neutronis has spies within the Citadel and keeps close watch over your defenses looking for weakness. A group called the Sons of Pavilion are a.."

The spell then cuts off. A few moments later, an angry Palance's voice echoes through the cabin.

"Are a what, Nikolai? 25 words, man! I don't need the suspense, thanks. This one comes out of your pay. We will keep eyes open."

Anna the Gorilla hits the cheese as hard as she can, and leaves a deeper dent than any of the others. A few men cheer, and few others call it cheating. Either way, a few that seemed to ignore her have started giving her a bit more space on the crowded ship. Prudence decides no one wants cheese dip, and restrains herself.

Revan and Nikolai have a chat, to include Tinker as well. They get to know their new ally. His knowledge of Bear Fist is decent, but he has no current knowledge of their plans or schemes. The mission with the giants was about how it sounds on the surfacace. 22 squads of Bear mobilized in the operations against the giants coming from Shadow Mountain. At the end, there were grumblings about refusal to pay.

Trayvin recommends the group consider the option of spending a day in the cove, but as no one else seems interested, it might be a waste of time they cannot afford.

(Unless the party wants to spend another day thinking over strategics, tomorrows post will be your last one at sea.)

The final night at sea comes and goes, and come morning, the crew is back to being active and alert, aware that they have entered dangerous waters. As you all gather for breakfast, the good captain approaches. He starts in a delicate tone, wringing his hat in his hands, looking almost sad, yet his eyes glitter with greed.

“Alright lads and miss Prudence, were almost there. All that’s left is the matter of payment. Not yer personal tickets, mind you. At the fair rate for securely transporting a military organisation onto foreign soil, with mums the word, we come to 3,000 gold pieces for the unit, to cover fare, entertainment and expenses. Then there’s the 300 gp passenger fee, per person, for sailing from a port on lockdown to a port in lockdown, which ye already covered."

The licks his lips and rubs his hands together.

“We take gems, gear, and other items in trade as well as gold and platinum pieces. No credit please.“

Nikolai eyes the captain and his mate with cool eyes.
"Interesting bargain, yours is. You come to an agreement of passage and its cost and sign it. Once on board you change the terms of agreement. You DO know who you are talking to, right? We are Mailed Fist, who are experts in Contracts of Service. You can wail all you want, you can threaten all you want, but the Mailed Fist will die to protect its contracts. I don't even need to lift my pinky finger and Pru will have this ship burned to the water line. Ana can transform into a kraken and splinter these timbers into match sticks. All within the Mailed Fist Law. As a matter of fact, we are headed right now to intercept a Mailed Fist Commander who is about to capture Alithmar on breach of its contract with the Mailed Fist."

Nikolai remains alert and tense but pretends to be relaxed. "Now, you want another contract? Just say so. We can start with how we provided your crew with invaluable protection. You saw what we did at the docks so you know our protection of your ship is not in question. We also provided entertainment to your crew as our bard here spend most of his time in music, song and stories. As far as a secure port, we dealt with any opposition to you leaving by decimating the Tiger Fist so that counts for us, maybe you even owe us since you'd not have ANY business with the Tiger Fist there to enforce the lock down. As far as a secure port to embark, you mentioned you were going to dump us on the beach. Hardly a secure port.

Now, lets talk about this new Contract you propose. You suggest a 3000gp fee for these 'services'. Give us a few minutes in private and we will come up with our own fee for the services we performed for you. If we owe you some, we pay, If you owe us some, you pay. Deal?"

There is an explosion, and dozens of tiny metal spikes fall from above and embed themselves in the ship. The mast cracks and sizzles, the treated wood resisting the flames for now. The sails however, are quickly engulfed in flame. Of the watch from the mast, there is no sign.

"Thanks Anna," Nikolai says then squints at the beach and surveys the troops. His keen half elven eyes see a lot.
"It's the Eagle Regiment troops. That smoke is actually coming from a spell caster and his spell casting. Eagle and Bear regiments were two of the Regiments that participated in getting rid of the giants for Ailithmar. They may be just wanting to stop the ship as they would any other or they may know we are here. Considering the condition of the sails, I doubt trying to get away to some other spot will work. Being Eagle Regiment, they probably have all manner of bird scouts along these shores anyway."

He looks at the captain and tells him "Send out a signal to parlay. Don't mention us unless they ask. If all they want is to search your ship for contraband, we can sneak over the other side and hide in the water. If they know some agents of the Fist are here, don't put yourselves in any more danger, just tell them we will talk to them."

The Agents of the Fist make their way above decks, ensuring that the there is no trickery from the captain. Nikolai encourages the Parley, but warns Konrad to do nothing stupid to endanger his ship or his crew. Prudence readies a counterspell, and Anna quickly drenches the remaining flames, saving some of the ships sails, though they look to be in pretty bad shape. Trayvin, Tinker, and Michael observe the damage, and prepare for whatever might come next.

The Captain makes orders for a small boat readies, and those orders are quickly followed. He also has 4 more boats readied for use, 2 on each side of the ship, just in case people have to abandon the ship quickly.

He makes his way with a couple of crewmen towards shore, and leaves his first mate in charge, with orders to leave the anchor up in case they have to try to run. The first mate seems concerned with the ships movements.

"Tide is carrying us closer, about as fast as the captain can row. An' he told me not to drop anchor. There might be an undertow here. Look!"

The captain's men row with skill and strength, and although they are closing with shore, they aren't putting much distance on the ship. After about 10 minutes, the captain and his men make shore. The ship, not far behind, lurches to a slow stop as it's keel rubs against the beach below, about 300 feet from shore.

"That's a good idea, Anna," Nikolai says as he surveys their situation. "Underwater, linked together with a length of rope with you towing, we could escape the notice of any scouts. That's better than me using my magical feather."

He then takes Pru's suggestion but adds. "The problem with this escape plan if we wait is that we won't have time to do it. Anna needs to have the time to cast the water breathing spell on all of us before we get blasted and we know they can do that easily enough since we are getting closer by the minute. I suggest we do it now, escape when the gate is open wide. Especially if they don't really know we are here and this is just a normal cargo check."

Unless there are reasonable objections from the majority of the Fist, Nikolai has everyone join Tinker and gather at the point most opposite the shore (Stern?) and Anna gets ready to cast her water breathing spells.
"This will also save the captain some embarrassment or punishment. We've made our payment, he's delivered us to the shore. That's good enough for me. Let's just try to get in to the water without too much of a splash, ok?"

With that decided he has everyone look up and about for any possible bird scouts and if the coast is clear and they can do this out of sight of the shore, Anna casts her water breathing spells while they attack two segments of rope (total 100') so that the slower swimmers are left behind. With Anna towing the rope and the others holding on and aiding in the swimming, they should be able to stick together.

"Now, over the side quietly as possible."

With the rope hanging over the rails, each one slithers down into the water, Nikolai last, bringing the other end of the rope with him.

The Agents, following Nikolai's plan, work quickly to start securing their climb down the port side of the ship. Ropes are fastened, and one by one they start the descent. Nikolai is first to the railing, but decides to be the last down.

(As I understand it, the ropes are affixed to Anna, whose strength of 16 should be enough to support one descent at a time. )

Your DM needs climb checks from everyone, as well as a definitive climbing order, volunteered by anyone.

The ship from keel to deck is 40 ft high.
Unknotted Rope, Slippery Surface

Climb, DC 20

With a successful Climb check, you can advance up, down, or across a slope, wall, or other steep incline (or even across a ceiling, provided it has handholds) at one-quarter your normal speed. A slope is considered to be any incline at an angle measuring less than 60 degrees; a wall is any incline at an angle measuring 60 degrees or more. A Climb check that fails by 4 or less means that you make no progress, and one that fails by 5 or more means that you fall from whatever height you have already attained. The DC of the check depends on the conditions of the climb. Compare the task with those on the following table to determine an appropriate DC.

You need both hands free to climb, but you may cling to a wall with one hand while you cast a spell or take some other action that requires only one hand. While climbing, you can’t move to avoid a blow, so you lose your Dexterity bonus to AC (if any). You also can’t use a shield while climbing. Anytime you take damage while climbing, make a Climb check against the DC of the slope or wall. Failure means you fall from your current height and sustain the appropriate falling damage.

Also, those using the rope are just letting themselves down. Nikolai, who will actually be climbing down the ship's hull should be the only one actually 'climbing'. So what's the DC to slip down a rope?

To simply slide down the rope without falling, DC 15

Any surface with adequate handholds and footholds (natural or artificial), such as a very rough natural rock surface or a tree, or an unknotted rope, or pulling yourself up when dangling by your hands.

I believe it would be just as hard to descend non-catastrophically as it would be to ascend.

DC 15:

Fail by 5 and you slide down, taking 5 points of damage from rope burn and descend 1/4 move speed.
Fail by 6 or more and you fall the 40ft.

Those still topside watch the exchange on shore tensely, as does the crew of the Knuckleduster, nets and other rigging in hand. The first mate keeps his eye stuck to his looking glass, and seems tense without Konrad on board.

"When you throw a net, you make a ranged touch attack against your target. A net's maximum range is 10 feet. If you hit, the target is entangled. An entangled creature takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls and a –4 penalty on Dexterity, can move at only half speed, and cannot charge or run. If you control the trailing rope by succeeding on an opposed Strength check while holding it, the entangled creature can move only within the limits that the rope allows. If the entangled creature attempts to cast a spell, it must make a concentration check with a DC of 15 + the spell's level or be unable to cast the spell.

An entangled creature can escape with a DC 20 Escape Artist check (a full-round action). The net has 5 hit points and can be burst with a DC 25 Strength check (also a full-round action). A net is useful only against creatures within one size category of you.

A net must be folded to be thrown effectively. The first time you throw your net in a fight, you make a normal ranged touch attack roll. After the net is unfolded, you take a –4 penalty on attack rolls with it. It takes 2 rounds for a proficient user to fold a net and twice that long for a non-proficient one to do so.

Mage Armor, Water Breathing

Condition: Entangled = -2 att, -4 dex, move half speed, Escape Art DC20 or Str DC25.
Adjusted: AC 19 Tch 19 Ffted 18 HP 38/38 CMD 22/24(Grapple)

Nikolai is not happy at the double cross. In his view, this lifts any legal bounds their contract with the captain had in preventing any attack or damage to the ship or crew. All was now quite legal.

["Everyone! Just jump into the water! Don't fret for anyone caught!"

He knows his Fist. They'd get themselves caught here trying to fight the crew. Under the circumstances, a rescue would be easier later, maybe. He hopes everyone else follows suit and jumps overboard also.

For his part, he tries to get some leverage of his own. The smug halfling cutting the rope gives Nikolai an idea, the Thumb is not going overboard alone.

OOC: I found no rule preventing a net grappled victim from performing a grapple himself, just the -2 att.

Improved Grapple Att on halfling:
CMB d20 +10 (-2) = 17 - 2 = 15 vs hafling CMD

If this attempt fails, he tries again:
CMB d20 +10 (-2) = 17 - 2 = 15 vs hafling CMD

If this attempt fails (duh), spend a Hero point for another try:
CMB d20 +10 (-2) = 15 - 2 = 13 vs hafling CMD

OOC the die roller is not in my favor today. :(

If the grapple succeeds, he hefts himself over board with the halfling in tow.
Move: you can move both yourself and your target up to half your speed. Etc..

Since Nikolai is not attempting to place the target anywhere but going over the side with it, I don't think the +4 bonus to break the grapple applies. My opinion. :)

Success or not, he then takes a 5' step to fling himself overboard. He has a plan for later.

Standard: Grapple att, one or two or three.
Move: 5' step to flop over the railing, with or without the ship's mate.

OOC: If I understand the 5' step rule correctly, he should be able to use all three grapples and still use the 5' step. It it is deemed not, then just one Grapple attack and then overboard.

The canny double-cross of the Agents has left the party split up and in two different places!

Anna is in the water and in elemental form. Since she has a natural swim speed, casting the spell in no problem. She begins concentrating on a summoning spell. Michael's fall from the rope is almost slow motion. His finger and thumb create the perfect "L" over his fore head, then launches an alchemists flask up over the ship. It impacts on the ships sides, and begins to burn. His eyes lock on those of his halfling rival just before he contorts to reduce his fall damage. (Michael, 8 subdual)

Prudence (going off your character sheet) is not only netted, but grappled. (CMD 15 - 2 dex = CMD 13.) She struggles to cast a spell, even while in the arms of these petty sailors.

"Casting a spell while you have the grappled or pinned condition is difficult and requires a concentration check (DC 10 + the grappler’s CMB + the level of the spell you’re casting).

Prudence needs (2) concentration checks this turn.

Concentration 26 vs DC 26 Grapple = success!
Concentration 16 vs DC 16 Net = success! (Rolled by DM. d20+11 I believe?)

Pru's flames cover both of her assailants and both net throwers and incinerates the net restraining her. Prudence is no longer entangled. 3 of the men fall in a burning heap, except her grappler.

"You'll pay for that witch!"

Trayvin makes it up onto the deck. Revan finds himself stirring and stands. His assailant has left him and is charging into the ruckus!

Tinker searches for a way back aboard. He could try scaling the side of the ship high enough up to try and jump to the rope, but unless he can fly, he doesn't have many other options. Nikolai tries in vain to secure his small prisoner, then flops over the ships railing. (Nikolai, 16 Subdual. 17 if you fail your acrobatics)

Although Prudence burned three of the men, there are 7 left on deck. 2 who threw nets at Nikolai, 2 who tried to grapple Nikolai, Pru's grappler, Revans attacker, and the First Mate.

2 men move to bull-rush Trayvin over the side! He gets an attack of opportunity on one of them! (DM Rolled, d20 + 7 = 9. Miss!) The bull-rush beats CMD 21, and Trayvin is pushed back 5 ft and over the edge of the ship! Trayvin takes 12 subdual damage and must start swimming (Unsure if you are in your armor.)

Prudence's grappler moves to pin her to the ground. He pins CMD 20.

A pinned creature is tightly bound and can take few actions. A pinned creature cannot move and is denied its Dexterity bonus. A pinned character also takes an additional –4 penalty to his Armor Class. A pinned creature is limited in the actions that it can take. A pinned creature can always attempt to free itself, usually through a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist check. A pinned creature can take verbal and mental actions, but cannot cast any spells that require a somatic or material component. A pinned character who attempts to cast a spell or use a spell-like ability must make a concentration check (DC 10 + grappler's CMB + spell level) or lose the spell. Pinned is a more severe version of grappled, and their effects do not stack.

Casting Spells while Pinned: The only spells which can be cast while grappling or pinned are those without somatic components and whose material components (if any) you have in hand. Even so, you must make a concentration check (DC 10 + the grappler's CMB + the level of the spell you're casting) or lose the spell.

The halfling laughs as Nikolai and Trayvin go overboard.

"I think you might consider turning yerselves in to whomever is chattin' with the captain, or else the pretty lady up here is going to pay the price!"

He kneels and uses his rope to give Prudence the "Tied Up" condition. (23 vs CMD 14)

If you have your target pinned, otherwise restrained, or unconscious, you can use rope to tie him up. This works like a pin effect, but the DC to escape the bonds is equal to 20 + your Combat Maneuver Bonus (instead of your CMD). The ropes do not need to make a check every round to maintain the pin. If you are grappling the target, you can attempt to tie him up in ropes, but doing so requires a combat maneuver check at a –10 penalty. If the DC to escape from these bindings is higher than 20 + the target's CMB, the target cannot escape from the bonds, even with a natural 20 on the check.

As a result of being tied up, Prudence is effectively "Helpless". There are 4 people in range to effectively coup de grace Prudence if ordered.

Helpless: A helpless character is paralyzed, held, bound, sleeping, unconscious, or otherwise completely at an opponent's mercy. A helpless target is treated as having a Dexterity of 0 (–5 modifier). Melee attacks against a helpless target get a +4 bonus (equivalent to attacking a prone target). Ranged attacks get no special bonus against helpless targets. Rogues can sneak attack helpless targets.

As a full-round action, an enemy can use a melee weapon to deliver a coup de grace to a helpless foe. An enemy can also use a bow or crossbow, provided he is adjacent to the target. The attacker automatically hits and scores a critical hit. (A rogue also gets his sneak attack damage bonus against a helpless foe when delivering a coup de grace.) If the defender survives, he must make a Fortitude save (DC 10 + damage dealt) or die. Delivering a coup de grace provokes attacks of opportunity.

Creatures that are immune to critical hits do not take critical damage, nor do they need to make Fortitude saves to avoid being killed by a coup de grace.

The remaining 4 men finish cutting the rope over the side. Only a groggy Revan remains onboard. Karavik takes 9 subdual from the fall.

On the Ship: Prudence, Revan

In the water: Tinker (5 subdual), Anna (14 subdual), Michael (8 subdual), Trayvin (12 subdual), Karavik (9 subdual)

DC 15:

Fail by 4 or less no progress down.
Fail by 5 and you slide down, taking 5 points of damage from rope burn and descend 1/4 move speed.
Fail by 6 or more and you fall the 40ft.

You may attempt, per regular rules, to move at half move speed by taking a -5 penalty.
You may also attempt to slide at full move speed, by taking a -15 penalty.

OOC: if I understand it, this post is supposed to be verbal only, so no time passes, eh?

Nikolai has a plan but one aboard the ship could work too. The halfling can only live if Pru lives. Is his life worth so little he'd kill Pru and sacrifice his own? What reward does a dead man get?

Trusting Tinker to keep up the gambit, he glares at Trayvin
Finally free of the net he says,
"Ok, you stay here and pretend you surrender. I've got a table to turn. Michael, Karavik, this is what we'll do..."

Nikolai quickly explains his plan to intercept the captain's dingy as it returns to the ship, overturn it, and capture the captain, their bargaining chip. "If the ship's mate kills Pru, the captain dies. If we get a chance to capture the Eagle Thumb as well, great. Since we can breathe water, they'll either surrender or drown. Trayvin, stay here if you wish, but we got a dingy to dump."

All this is said in hush-hush.

To the halfling, he yells back before he dives underwater, "We live by the Fist, we die by the Fist. Well put your head in a sack of 3000 copper and send it to Davy Jones' Locker where you can look at your reward for a long time!"

That's it for speech.

Michael surfaces from is dive, still slightly stunned from the fall. he moves to Nikolai and starts cutting his bonds with his knife. He nods understanding the plan and submerges and begins swimming for the captains dingy.

Anna is unable to really respond at all. She just blinks her big batty eyes. Tinker and Revan exercise true dwarven diplomacy, promising death and missing limbs for everyone who might be involved in an attack on Prudence.

For her part, Pru isn't afraid to die, but would be immediately dissapointed if her capture resulted in the death of her allies.

Michael, Nikolai, and Karavik are ready to move out, but Karavik starts to readily fall behind. It seems he doesn't know how to swim! The Bard is left behind to tread water.

Trayvin alone is will to call a truce, and receives orders from Nikolai to pretend to give up.

With three threats of death, the men have to check their guts and their resolve. The call is made for them, however, when the ship suddenly lurches and starts being pulled towards the shore!

The metal shards inside the hull are the ship are glowing fiercely, at least the ones still visible. One of the Eagle Company war-mages seems to be doing something with a rod. Konrad is yelling and waving his arms, visibly upset.

The men on deck nervously abandon Pru and lash out at the dwarves!

2 men grapple Revan, who gets an AoO on one of them. (Grapple CMD14)

2 men grapple Tinker, who also gets an AoO. ( Grapple CMD 18)

With both grapples failed, two men try to bull rush Revan off the ship! (CMD 16)

The halfling sidesteps to flank Revan with his men and cuts wildly with his daggers! (Nat 20, confirm vs AC 24) for 22 damage. Second attack missed.

1 final sailor steps up nervously to Tinker, covers his eyes, and waves his shiny new cutlass about wildly. (d20+0=3)

Those in the water notice that the ship is moving quickly. It covers 30ft of the 300 between it and the shoreline, and it's speed seems to be increasing!

Fine, you wanna deny just the unconsciousness,I'll knock you out permanently instead! Revan yells out as the daggers strike true. He swings his axe at the man that was foolish enough to open himself up.

Then he swings at the halfling: to hit 21(12+9) damage:14(10+4)

He reverses his swing almost immediately, coming in for a second attack on the halfling:

Tinker doesn't pay much attention to his surroundings, and swings his urgrosh around to smack the first sailor with the flat of his blade!

His backstroke, however, fails to mark the sailor's companion. No matter, the real danger is the First Mate, and Tinker belies the bulk of dwarves by lightly slipping around to place the halfling between two angry dwarves!

OOC: Remember, the taller ship, the deeper the keel. If it hit a sand bar, ok, but it can't be much deeper closer in. It can't beach itself like viking longboat. It's up to the DM as to how fast ocean floor rises.

Just saying.
Because it makes a big difference. As big as this ship is, the beach crew should still have to get in the dingy or swim out to it. A good way to figure out the depth of the keel is to assume that two thirds of the hull is underwater, else the ship capsizes. That would mean the ship has 80' of hull under water, at least.

I'm going by my experience in building the plastic models of Mayflower and USS Constitution, and the so many pictures and movies I've seen. I've got the Cutty Sark still in the box, half painted, waiting for that day I can finish it. :(

Post incoming.

Nikolai needs everyone with him for his plan to work, so he stays with Kravaik. Being able to breath under water makes a big difference! He Makes sure, by hand gestures, that Michael knows not to get ahead as well.

He's not in a big hurry as he figures it will still be a little longer before the captain gets in the dingy to get back to the ship. But then the ship starts moving! Towards shore!

As best as he can see underwater, he tries to gauge the rise of the sea floor and the depth of the keel to get an idea how close the ship will get to shore.

Michael is ticked to death at the ability to breath water! he strokes onward toward the dingy pretending he is a shark. thinking of how he's going to get the men out of the boat. He grins, and pulls a ACF from his pocket. when he gets to the dingy, he shoots up and smashes the bottle in the bottom of the boat. If this don't get them out of the dingy, they can darned well burn for all he cares.

Assuming Revan killed the mate the air elemental chases after the moving ship, lands and attacks one of the halfling's lackeys.

(Slam hits vs AC 14; 2 damage)

Anna-Bat flies after the ship that it is gaining speed. If she can land close enough to the skirmish she will and bite one of the lackeys. Otherwise she will just use a double move action to land on the ship.

if needed:

(Bite hits vs AC 25 for 15 damage)
