In Need of Rescue

Sleep Interrupted
Sunday September 27th, 2015 11:58:00 PM

The group purchases various bits of gear and one day sit down and start talking about what should or could be next. There is the painting to keep an eye on for sure, but just in case that does not produce something soon, the party looks elsewhere. The well equipped ogres and goblins land at the top of everyone's thought. Both had the same markings, that means a power as yet unseen or known. The group decides that heading into the wilds to look for additional evidence is in order. The power bringing goblins and ogres together and equipping them is something to be reckoned with. And so that is what the group decides to do in the morning

Night falls, good dinner and after drinks are had at Tree Tops. As is the norm, most of the permanent residents are in attendance and socialize on some extent with the party.

The party is at the Tree of Parting sleeping when they are awoken by shouting. Angry voices shouting the same thing and another higher pitched voice perhaps a woman shouting for Crosseye, Mack, Atlas, Bonivus. The angry voices shout back! But now seem just shouting to be heard, not angry. Something about the lift and sleeping

Bonivus? doesn't Mack keep mentioning that name? Cameron wonders as he heads back to the apartment from his prayers under the still nearly full moon. He detours away and heads for the lift. As he goes he reaches into his pocket and pulls a bolt from it. On this he casts a light spell to illuminate his path, putting the light near the fletching on the bolt.
When he arrives he asks the watchman on duty at the lift, "Whats going on? I hear some of my friends names being called and some that have not been here at the Tree for weeks. Who is down there?"
If no one is at the lift, Cameron will get it ready to descend, but waits for more of his friends to arrive so he isn't alone.

Atlas jumps out of bed, tugs on his pants, grabs his sword and shield and runs out the door. During this he bellows, "Wake up everyone, something is amiss. I'll meet you at the lift."

On his way out the door he practically trips over Cameron as they dash together to the lift. The spry halfling makes it there a split second before him.

'Osul wakes to the shouting - surely most of the occupants of The Tree wake to the shouting - and he pulls on his garb, grabs the quarterstaff, and makes for the top of the lift, following a few paces behind Atlas and Cameron. He errs on the prudent side of caution in not adding to the cacophony in order to better hear the calls from below...

With that said as most if not all of the rest head out, Carver armors up as rapidly as he can, slips his weapon harness and saddle bags into position as he follows along behind the rest...

Boy Interupting
Monday September 28th, 2015 10:59:53 PM

The party is roused from their beds, even Cameron had just settled in, the hour being well past midnight. Carver and Crosseye begin donnig armor and help each other to speed through the process as fast as they can. Even so, they will be several minutes behind. Atlas , Mack, Owen, Osul and Cameron arrive at the lift in about 15 minutes to find several guards calling down to the ground. Looking down, Atlas and Mack recognize Boy. When Boy sees them, he starts yelling in a much more excited way. Korbiss and Durbin have been captured by orcs. The wagon was attacked and during the fighting they told him to run to the Tree for help and so he did. Boy is exhausted and hurting all over and spattered with blood and mud. None of the blood is his. The attack happened this night, he and the dwarves were sleeping, well after moonrise.

The party has little trouble getting the guardsmen, whom they know by name, to drop a side stair for Boy. As he comes up, Carver and Crosseye arrivr

OK, cool. Thanks for the time update, I just assumed as I posted. So no armor, but I could totally bring my shield and crossbow since I wouldn't have been carrying them around at the tree, but they would have been the first things I grabbed instead of my armor.

IC
As the guards start to lower the stairs, Cameron starts to walk down them. As he passes Boy he asks " How far away, and which direction? Also, how many orcs, not that it matters, I'm going anyway."

He then heads off in the indicated direction after casting Longstrider on himself. If any of the original group members keep up with him he asks " Who are Korbiss and Durban?"

Cameron double moves through the darkness and keeps the bolt loaded in his Heavy Crossbow enchanted with light back near the flight stabilizers on the shaft. If he spots the orcs before they spot him he douses the light and hides.

Atlas yells to Cameron, "Running off on your own is only going to get you killed. Wait up, we need information before we do anything."

Then to everyone, "Boy, explain EVERYTHING to this group while I run back and get my armor. There's a chance that we may need supplies if we're going on a multi-day hunt. If that's the case we'll need everyone to come back and get ready. If not then everyone run ahead and I'll have Boy lead me right behind you. Running through the fields and woods without boots isn't going to help anyone."

Atlas runs back to put on his armor, boots, etc. If he doesn't hear from anyone then he leaves his backpack, supplies, etc, and runs as fast as he can to catch up.

Once there, Carver grabs all of Cameron's gear, except his poisonous critters and loads them on his back."Atlas, anyone head off not ready? Load me up with the gear they've forgotten, I guess I'll be the pack bearer until we catch up to them..... If all else fails, I can magic myself to move faster if it slows me too much."
With Atlas' help, Carver gathers up all the equipment left by his friends and is ready to go.

We should recap where all those healing potions went for the DM's sanity.
We started with

4 Cure Moderate Wounds 2d8+3

Since I can cast healing myself I just want 1 CLW as a backup. Who else is taking which potions?

IC:Owen looks about for parental-seeming people. "We should make sure this boy has someone to care for him while we chase after the orcs."

After (hopefully) finding someone, Owen jogs after the party. He may arrive slightly late.

Boy Interupting
Tuesday September 29th, 2015 11:10:58 PM

Cameron asks for some particulars from Boy, Mack having filled in a bit of information on where they know him and Durbin and Korbiss from. Atlas asks Boy to explain everything to Owen and Osul, while he heads back to get equipped to go after the orcs.

The boy is completely exhausted, to the point of passing out. He is able to provide some information though. He does not know how many orcs were involved, nor how long ago. He does know they were not planning to arrive at the Tree until midday tomorrow. As too the rest, "I was asleep and woke to shouting. Korbiss told me to run fro the Tree. That he and Durbin would be all right and to get help. I'm sorry I don't remember much else right now." Boy collapses as he says these last words, passing out.

Survival 7 fail
Cameron looks at the boy and listens to both Atlas and Owen's assessments of the expedition. The boy is clearly terrified and exhausted. Even were magic used on him it is doubtful he would go very far tonight. If the Orcs knew of an escaping prisoner that they were not able to run down while they were faster and able to see in the dark, then they certainly have set an ambush. That the boy arrived here at all means that they either did not want him or they were unaware of his escape. He mounts the stairs to return to the Tree, fearing not for himself, but for the dwarves left in the clutches of their racial enemies, the Orcs. They will be off after the orcs by first light, but Miles Raynor must be briefed so that he can set a stronger guard in case the orcs head for the Tree or have greater numbers than Cameron expects.
Cameron turns to one of the Watchers and says, " Ask Miles Raynor to meet us in the inn in a couple of minutes, we shouldn't be longer than that."
Cameron then bends down over the boy and extends his hand, with his holy symbol in the other. Touching the boy's forehead he intones a short prayer and changes a magic prepared into magical healing to ease any wounds and remove some of the fatigue the boy has suffered. ( Lose Bless to cast CLW for 6 healing on Boy) Then with a grunt, the Halfling picks the boy up and staggers back to the apartment with him, lying him in Cameron's own bed when he arrives. He gathers his remaining gear, mostly his great coat and mail and heads to the inn, where he assumes Miles will have been summoned by the watchers. He hopes to brief the head of security and make a plan with his friends and be on their way within the hour. He still thinks that every moment lost is a moment those dwarves may be killed.

Boy Interupting
Wednesday September 30th, 2015 9:47:19 PM

Nearly everyone in the group in their own way, realize that the attack happened at some distance. Running off immediately will not gain much if anything.
Cameron's intent to cast healing on Boy is interrupted by Carver and the paladin lays hands on Boy. He remains passed out and covered in mud and blood. The group brings Boy to their room and Mack starts giving first Aid with Osul's assistance. Mack and Osul find no wounds and get him cleaned up, both simply think Boy is exhausted. What he needs most is rest.

The rest of the group goes to meet in Tree Tops with Miles, assuming he was awoken as requested. Also in attendance is Lorifir Lorhalien, the Fletcher and Ciyradyl Ilyndrathyl, owner of Tree Tops. The elves sit quietly and easily in their chairs at the table. Miles is leaning in on his elbows when the group enters and snaps to his feet to hear what the group has to say.

Miles bites his lip and absently rubs his chin upon hearing of the attack. I'ts apparent he's not thrilled that orcs would be so bold as to come as close as these have. Miles looks at the elves and then back to the group nodding. "I'd give you horses if i could, but reality is, we don't have any at the Tree to give." Miles nods to Lorfir and Ciyradyl and returns his attention to Atlas, "You have things to get to, as do I. If you can, when you catch up to these swine, learn if they are part of a bigger group."

With that Miles heads out. Lorfir stands and gives a small bow to Ciyradyl who returns it with a nod, turns and exits as well. "Do not tarry or there will be no dwarves to rescue Atlas."

Leaving you with Ciyradyl, "Is there anything else or any messages you wish to leave before you go?"

"Please send someone to our apartment to watch over Boy. I wouldn't want him frightened when he wakes. We will bring the dwarves back with us, or avenge them. Miles seemed concerned that orcs would come this far into the Tree's territory. Have they done so before? If so, did they have good reason? I can only think that they either mean to be up to no good on purpose, which will earn them a swift death or that they come heralding some other calamity in their homeland of Izen which means they need our help. If Izen is indeed in trouble we may need to send an orc emissary back to deliver a message. Please ask Miles to have his watchers restrain themselves if the orcs approaching do not seem hostile. Otherwise, I think we are off."
"'Osul, I will aid your keen woodland attuned senses in following the boy's backtrail. We need as much help as we can get so that we can move as swiftly as possible."

Once they are on the ground Cameron does as he promised and tries to help 'Osul pick out boy's path from the campsite. He also keeps a light on he bolt in his crossbow and a keen eye out in case of an ambush.

"Yes Owen, there is still plenty of time for the running off willy-nilly!", Osul interjects with a grin.

"Six to eight miles... would there not be places in the upper branches from where we could see them. Do we have some magic of far-sight amongst us, like the eagle?"

"As for the orcs, I am just hopeful they are not wearing the three circles."

Of course one throws that out there - how else does one know he is being read? Seriously though, we are shortly leaving The Tree, with The Painting doing who knows what, and having vouched for Boy who we are also just about to leave. He is better known to most of you than he is to me, and Mack was already doing the heavy lifting as far as taking care of Boy was concerned - I just wanted him helped whilst being as sure as I could that he wasn't unknowingly carrying a sickness with him. I could see nothing more than acute exhaustion, and I am glad, for now attention and time to rest are his best healers. The word "Lycanthropy" got my point across succinctly.

Atlas turns to Ciyradyl, "Pass the word that there is trouble amiss and that people should stay near the tree if they are to remain safe. These orcs are likely part of the larger group we have been discussing since our last trip. After we get the Dwarves we'll see if we can look into what is going on out there and put an end to it.

"Also, if you have something like 'Osul is asking then send a runner after us with information on what you see."

Turning to address everyone, "It's time to go and see what we can do for our friends." Atlas starts for the lift.

Orc Hunt
Thursday October 1st, 2015 11:26:03 PM

The party asks and mentions a few more things and Ciyradyl nods. "I will stay with Boy and keep watch over him. As to the orcs, there has not been an attack so close in many years. The Tree is a place of universally accepted peace. We are recognized as a neutral location and my understanding is that this concept is highly prized through out the area. Do what you must and what you feel is right."
Ciyradyl assures you all that everyone will know very soon what is going on and where the heroes have gone. The number of residents is quite small, after all, at less than 20 even if the last merchants and the party themselves are counted
At around 7-8 miles it might have been possible to spot the camp from the tree, but terrain, fire position and other such factors could influence that. On this night, no on watch recalls a distance fire. Looking westward now, reveals nothing but the deep night.

The Party quickly gears up and heads out. Mles catches up to you as you head down the lift. He hands the group a pack of food and then hands Owen an equipment bundle. "If you're going with them, you might need more than your skin." Inside the bundle, Owen finds a Masterwork Staff, Masterwork Dagger, 40 bolts a Bedroll and tent.

There is no trail to follow, the dwarves would have been on the road and it is easy enough to follow. Cameron has a light spell active, but the partial moons and stars, even under the partly cloudy sky this night make the road easy enough to follow.

The question is, does the group move at regular speed, or try and push themselves. Both choices have advantages and drawbacks

No PC has slept more than 4 hours this night.
Spell casters, you have the spells from the previous day. Normally you have no need to cast anything beyond 0 level on a regular basis. Consider yourself having your full complement

Owen sags under the weight of the equipment bundle. "Thanks!" he says, voice muffled by the bedroll.

After the lift descends, he quietly says to the others "I really can't carry all of this stuff without slowing us down. Can anyone give me a hand? Also, we should douse our Light on the road. We don't need to make ourselves more obvious if this is a trap."

As the group hits the road he senses that they are pushing themselves, so he speaks up. "Everyone listen up. We're lucky if we got 4 hours of sleep this night. We might be able to make good time if we push the pace, but will we have the strength we need to fight if we come upon the Orcs at sun down later today? We need to make a conscious choice on if we're going to run this one out with the hope of finding them and saving them quickly, or slow it down enough that we can withstand a longer chase and fight. I am pushing on regardless, I have ignored the Goddess's prodding too much already playing nice and gathering more supplies. Those dwarves are in need and truth be told, after what Ciyradyl said, I think these orcs are more in need of aid than they are doing this to be offensive. If I am wrong, then you may need to save me."
Cameron, already enchanted to move as fast as the longer legged humans in the group sets off at a brisk pace. If the others choose to move more slowly so as to conserve their strength he understands, a forced march is a very nasty bit of work.

I assume a forced march is what we are looking at? If not and it won't be fixed by a channel or two at the other end, please let me know and Cameron will do something more sensible like pace himself. If so, these are the guidelines for it. I would remind the other casters that clerics and druids do not need to rest before praying for spells, but being fatigued does suck. Owen unfortunately, does need to get rest before learning spells and may be in trouble once his spells are spent.

Forced March
In a day of normal walking, a character walks for 8 hours. The rest of the daylight time is spent making and breaking camp, resting, and eating.
A character can walk for more than 8 hours in a day by making a forced march. For each hour of marching beyond 8 hours, a Constitution check (DC 10, +2 per extra hour) is required. If the check fails, the character takes 1d6 points of nonlethal damage. A character who takes any nonlethal damage from a forced march becomes fatigued. Eliminating the nonlethal damage also eliminates the fatigue. It's possible for a character to march into unconsciousness by pushing himself too hard.

OoC: It's not a forced march, it's a hustle. If it takes us more than eight hours to walk 6-8 miles, there's a problem. From the PRD: "Hustle: A hustle is a jog (about 6 miles per hour for an unencumbered human). A character moving his speed twice in a single round, or moving that speed in the same round that he or she performs a standard action or another move action, is hustling when he or she moves."

Cameron sees no reason to not hustle. Unlike their healer in the Fist who didn't understand that anyone who couldn't make the grade and got hurt keeping up the speed would get better and not be tired if they were healed a little bit. He could totally handle that. The enhanced speed provided by the lady's spell would make him fast enough to make the speed. He would be there to heal them when they reached their destination.

Orc Hunt the Attack
Sunday October 4th, 2015 10:51:37 PM

Knowing time is essential, the group hustles to make the journey as shorts sis reasonably possible. Cameron cast a long strider spell to increase his speed, making Mack the slowest member of the group. Carver is the only real choice, or split up. Carver has the extra gear and Osul offers to stay with Mack. The party estimates the distance between 6 and 8 miles.

The main group finds a set of four wagons on the road about 90 minutes later. Lying about the wagons are 6 men and 4 women, with 3 orcs, all stripped of gear all dead.

Osul and Mack will be 30 minutes to an hour behind the rest of the group.

All PC are fatigued and have taken 1 point non lethal damage
fatigued character can't run or charge and takes a penalty of –2 to Strength and Dexterity. Eliminating the nonlethal damage also eliminates the fatigue.

You know what works better? If we as a group decide what is best and we as a group save these dwarves if they can be saved. Remember all that talk on the way back from the beacon? That was us working towards becoming a team, not us deciding that when one of us wants we'll do what we want because we think it is the only way. You either believe in the team or you leave the team."}

I don't know these dwarves from a hole in the wall, but the lad they sent asked for help and I intend to do whatever I can can render it. Yes I am favorable disposed to most dwarves because I have lived with them for most of my life. They are a hard, proud people that don't ask for help. These did and will get it from me. I agree that together we would be a more effective force, but all I hear is whining about going too fast or rocks in peoples shoes. Life is hard. The tough suck it up and keep going. I wasn't raised to whine, I see no need to start now. Even with the dad here I think these orcs have a plan. From what I learned as a child, orcs don't just take dwarves as prisoners when they can kill them. They have a reason to come after these dwarves is my guess. If the orcs make a claim for Vengeance, then I will hear their claim and the Lady will help me evaluate it's merit and I will do what I think is right."
" We are all individuals. I believe what I believe, you believe what you believe. I think we are both good people and we will find common ground. If we don't, then we may have to agree to disagree. For the record, I don't think it is 'the only way'. However, I have not yet heard a plan that holds any urgency in getting to the bottom of this cry for help. Soon the magic allowing me to move faster will wear off and I will be forced to slow down. Until that happens I choose to keep moving forward."
"Oh, and another thing. Please don't threaten me. If you want to lead me, give me an example to follow, but don't threaten. It won't work."

You locates a dozen arrows and a silver dagger, bloodied with Orc blood tha t was missed by the victors when they stripped the bodies. You find the remnants of a fire, scattered about. The dead men and 1 of the women have multiple defensive wounds and splatters of Orc blood, mixed with their own.
Tracking DC 10 locates direction orcs left the battle. Left to the south west into Izen. remnants of a fire, 3 of the men have defensive wounds and Orc blood on them, 1 of the women as well.

Cameron can tell the bodies are several hours old, but he knowledge of when the attack happened might be providing more information on the than what he can examine of the dead.

When Osul arrives, he fills in quite a bit more information. He notes that 2 of the men were wearing armor. The attack was started with arrow fire, quite a bit of arrow fire and that after the attack the arrows were collected. The tracks reveal to Osul that there were 12 orcs, 13 defenders with one of them being child, who ran east. The 9 orcs surviving, took 2 defenders with them. The prisoners are walking but bound to each other at the legs.

The thorough search of the area also finds A rough sketch in the dirt, partially erased by footprints that looks like a topographical map. Drawn with a large implement, possibly a boot heel. The only features you can make out is a river near a rock spire. The tracks of the orcs and prisoners lead southwest, into Izen

Cameron tries to recall everything he can about the geography of Izen, trying to remember where in Izen the river and spire might be.
" Does anyone else know more about the geography of Izen? Any idea where this map might be of? If we can get that info we might be able to find a way to cut the orcs off before they get home. I know that hustling has been a sore point so far, but they are on the move now, If we can find a way to catch them while they are still moving, rather than before they make camp we might be in a better position to beat them."

OoC: Sorry for missing my post yesterday. Things came up, as they are wont to do. The knowledge check for regional terrain features probably has a DC of 15.

IC: Owen tries to place an Izen rock spire in his mind. "A rock spire by a river..." he says, "It is likely the East Peaseblossom. I'm more familiar with that river than I'd like to be." Then a thought strikes him: "Let's check the orcs for tribal markings. That may give us an idea of what we're facing. I don't want to rush into a big group of Wolverine or Devil orcs."

Cameron moves up beside Atlas as they move out. Cocking his thumb over his shoulder at Carver he simply says," That's the crying I'm talking about."
"Look, I can see what I said upset you, so let me clarify my statement. I don't see how we are NOT working as a group currently. When one member of the group feels passionately about something and is being overly enthusiastic about pursuing it, me in this case, it is the job of others in the group, you in this case, to try and reign them in. Do I want us strung out and unable to defend ourselves? No, I don't. Do I want to do all I can to try and help these dwarves? Yes, I do. You were abl to see that at a moment's notice I can remove the fatigue we are incuring by rushing forward and made sure I would be able to do so again, then continued on with the catch up fast plan. Carver is so worried that he won't be able to charge as soon as he sees something that pisses him off that he isn't recalling that he himself can at any time remove his own fatigue, and is whining, pretty ineffectually, about it."
"I guess what I am trying to say is, you aren't dumb. When something could threaten the ability of you or those who look to you for guidance and leadership you ask questions and try to make sure that the risks are being taken care of. This is what makes you a far better leader than I will ever be. One of the things my goddess has done for me is remove fear from my vocabulary. Sometimes that makes me not calculate all of the risks, and it is good to have someone make me stop and consider all the points. In this case I see no down side. We can be battle ready as soon as we encounter a fight simply by staying together. So let Mack and I hustle as fast as we can and the rest of you just keep up with us. The Orcs have no need to hurry and I think, despite what Gloomy Gus over there says, we can catch them before they make camp for the night and set up whatever defenses they have. When we do I totally volunteer to go in and talk to them, or, Maybe 'Osul or Mack could send a small animal in to talk to the dwarves. Either way, we find out what's going on and come up with a way to make it the best outcome that we can."
"What do you say?"

a rock spire and river or stream is just to vague. There is no well known or even slightly heard of location within Izen, that fits. The group is going to have to follow the trail the Orcs and their prisoners leave. Osul points out, that at least for now, the trail is very apparent. The Druid also guesses the orcs have about a four hour head start.

Owen strikes upon the idea of double checking for tribal marks. The dead orcs do indeed have primitive tattoos, but no one recognizes them as belonging to any of the well known clans, nor do they resemble the markings found with the goblins and ogres in the Red Hills.

Carver is concerned still about the pace the party is trying to set. Magic took care of the fatigue incurred from moving quickly, but it will not replace sleep. At some point sleep will be required

The orcs are certainly not trying to hide it.

The sun begins to spill across the land from the east, revealing the red barren crags and dirt of southern Izen. Patches of wild grass and pathetic shrub like trees can be seen scattered about and ahead, the trail winds towards some rough low rocky hills. Atlas is huffing and puffing when they come to a stop. He's clearly struggling to keep up. After taking a few minutes to catch his breath, "I agree, we're no good to the dwarfs walking in to save them and being killed the moment we show up. As long as the weather is going to hold and we can follow the tracks after a break then we need to stop. I doubt they are going that much further and they are keeping our friends alive for the time being.

"If we rest and heal we'll be ready to go in the late afternoon. That still gives us some light to use as we track them. If we're lucky we'll catch them before dark. If not, well, we'll figure out a plan once we get there. If I'm not mistaken, Orcs can see like Dwarfs in the dark, so that puts us at a disadvantage. Better that than walking in as a corpse already.

"Normal watch, stay alert. Everyone agree?"
Atlas looks at Cameron to see if he's going to argue. It isn't a 'Don't you argue' look, nor is it a pleading look. He's just tired and he doesn't have the energy to argue. He doesn't even try to hide it. Whether anyone believes it or not, he doesn't want to stop any more than Cameron does, but his gut tells him that they're going to be facing more than 9 orcs by the time they catch up. They'll need their mind and body sharp if they are going to get out alive, let alone save the Dwarfs in the process.

Atlas eats and takes first watch.

--------------------------------------------
ooc: Like I said with 'Osul, if the weather is going to take a turn for the worse and the tracks are going to get washed out then Atlas agrees with 'Osul, they have to push on. However, if rain isn't in the forecast then he's adamant about stopping for a "night" of rest.

Unbelievable Thinks Cameron as half the group nearly expires from exhaustion. And we barely pushed on more than 2 hours beyond a normal march. He sighs and reaches into his pockets for his tent. He finds the largest of the scrub trees in the area and pitches the hang rope over the top of it, hanging his tent for rest time. As the others draw near and begin to pitch their own tents he again asks Jancassis's patience with them and channels energy in her name. This time she is no more forgiving than last and only a meager trickle of healing energy is let loose, healing 4 points of the nonlethal damage they have taken. (ignore the d8's I had a momentary brain fart) He is confident that at the rate of 3 points per hour the others that are still tired will feel better in a few hours.
Briefly he considers going on alone, once the group has drifted off to sleep. He is sure he could slip past the sentries. But to what end? He had not killed those dozen gnolls and hyenas himself. Rusty had died protecting him and Lady knows that hill giant was barely standing when the last gnoll stopped breathing. What would he do against nine orc warriors alone?
" Die that's what. Seriously, you can't take on the entire world alone man, you have to learn to pace yourself. How far can they possibly get in daylight. Don't orcs hate daylight?"
" No, Goblins hate daylight. Orcs don't mind it at all." He hears himself mumble.
Cameron nearly jumps out of his skin as he looks at his left shoulder, where he is certain the voice came from, and sees a large brown scorpion sitting there, looking at him with its many eyes.
" Oh so NOW you can see me, well Lady be praised. I was wondering how long I would be talking to myself. Take a load off and have some grub. The others are ready to pass out so you may as well get some rest and mush those little doggies even harder when they wake up. Too bad it'll still be hours until midnight and you won't have a new spell to keep you moving fast until then. Oh, and now that you can see me, I am called Hobbes. I have always been around you know, but you haven't generally paid me too much mind. When the dwarves used to chase you, I was the one that told you where the best hiding places were. When you were a bowman in the Fist I used to tell you how far you could push something before someone would try and shank you. And now, I am trying to tell you to ease back. Driving on harder will knock some of them out, beyond the point you can revive them. And then you will have to care for them until they wake up and that means no rest for you. Because as hard as I might urge it, you care enough for them to not just leave them where they lie and move on. Soft is what I call it, you call it morals. Either way they are done for at least six hours. Get some rest and plan how to catch those orcs. I know you know how to do that. I'm gonna go look for a snack."
The scorpion scuttles down Cameron's arm and heads out into the badlands. Cameron watches it go. He can see the others, and they glance occasionally at him, but ignore the scorpion. Cameron looks at the cup he is drinking out of, simple wood and the same one he has used for years, and wonders if his cheese has finally slipped off his cracker. Then he hears Hobbes's voice. " Oh no, you are perfectly sane, and none of them can see me. I am only in your noggin, but you are 100% not insane. Chew on that one for awhile and see where it gets you. A figment of your own imagination telling you that you are sane. Mind blowing eh?"
Cameron could only agree and climb up into his tent to rest out of the sun.

Monday October 12th, 2015 8:52:01 PM

On only three maybe four hours of sleep and another 3 hours of hustling to close distance with an quarry that started with a 7 mile lead, the group as a whole is taxed. Cameron channels some healing energy and it does help but half of the group is still fatigued. Some tents are quickly pitched and watches set. you are, after all in the badlands of Izen and there are more orcs here than simply the ones you are chasing.
The sun climbs higher and the day brings more scattered clouds of the nimbus variety. Osul's prediction of fair weather remains wholly intact. it is high noon before the group is ready to break camp and continue. Osul notes the weather pattern and determines at least 3 more solid days like this one are ahead. The druid acquires the trail once more and the party is off.

The group as a whole, can make 16 miles a day with the base speeds of Cameron and Mack. An 8 mile deficit to a group of medium creatures. Osul believes the dwarves are slowing the orcs and possibly or purpose. The Trail today should reveal more on that topic. Cameron and Mack will need to Hustle for 4 hours to allow the group to make the normal 24 miles in a day. That amounts to 10HP non lethal damage to Mack and Cam

Owen makes his way from his bedroll to a standing position, accompanied by grumbling and the popping of joints. "You young guys might be able to hustle all over the place, but that's hard on my aging bones. I'm up for a quick pursuit, though you'll have to tolerate my grousing."

While he packs up, Owen looks about. "Actually," he says, "Cameron and Atlas are looking worse off than I feel. We should send some healing their way before we get going."

Carver feels a lot better after the break. "I know you believe and feel we need to rush as fast as possible Cameron, but going as fast as possible rather than as quickly as possible will be dangerous to not just the dwarves we intend to rescue. If we had been attacked as we reached the spot we camped at, I'm afraid we'd not all have survived the encounter.
So going as quickly as we can will make it so we can at least defend ourselves.
I'm going to suggest something, and if any of you spread a rumor about it, I'll make sure something unfortunate happens to you when we finish with this.
With both of you so light in weight, I can carry each of you part of the time, allowing you to recuperate as we go, there by all of us will be ready in case of a fight."

Carver is obviously not happy, but he knows teamwork is important, heck he'd even done it during the field trials back in the Fist.

Mack, you missed that 'Osul is a spellcaster too and already cast TTT on himself. The same spell will not grant bonuses twice. For the record neither will the same type of bonuses stack. So for example if I cast Bless before Carver starts using his bardic ability, they will not stack ( on attack or fear saves) because they are both Morale bonuses. His bonus to Damage and to saves vs charm will add on though because Bless does not affect damage or charm saves. So it is really better to have him use bardic performance because it does more things and eventually does them better than my bless spell. Plus it means I can cast a cure light wounds in place of the Bless.
IC
Hobbes returns as Cameron's watch ends, munching on a cricket. When Carver again cautions against hustling because Mack and Cameron will be tired, the scorpion weighs in. What crybaby crawled up HIS butt? HE isn't even the one that'll be tired at the end of this if you and the other short guy have to hustle. It's like we might upset some cosmic balance and actually do some good if we get to these dwarves and save them and that might upset Gargul's chi or something. Can't you make him stop dragging everyone down?
Catching himself before he speaks out loud, Cameron replies to Hobbes. You remember the time in the Fist right? Where that incompetent cleric let the whole group down over and over by not removing their fatigue when they forced marched, and then got killed because he had no idea what to do in combat and everyone was too tired to save him? Well that was important to Carver. He got to stand before his god and get chewed out for fighting dumb. Then once the cleric got returned to the breathing side of things he mouthed off and got Carver and the rest of us kicked out of Gargul's realm before Carver could really speak to his god. Yeah what Carver is saying about the fatigue and all is bringing the group's morale down, but he has seen what a little fatigue can do and wants to be sure that it doesn't happen again. His advice is sound, and offerig to carry me or Mack so we aren't as tired is pretty noble of him. I mean I don't offer to carry other people around on my back all the time, it would be demeaning. He means well he just has a lousy way of phrasing stuff. I'll see what I can do.
Cameron then turns to Carver and says, quietly. " Carver, I can make it without help, but thanks for offering. I learned in the Fist that when your legs are short, yu just have to suck up not being fast. None of the drill instructors ever slowed down a march or let the rest of the group slow down on a run because I couldn't run as fast. I saw one gnome sorcerer that thought he deserved a break tell a drill instructor that he was tired one of my first days in training camp. The instructor smiled and told the rest of us that creampuff the sorcerer was winded, and we all could tack on another mile for every time he fell behind on that run. We ran an extra three miles before someone finally scooped up that gnome and carried him the last few miles. He was also treated to a blanket party that night that put him in the infirmary for a week nursing the bruises and the broken nose he got for making a big deal abut how he was shorter and needed a break. After that I never complained and just made sure I kept up. Of course I then beat the pants off of most of my squad that night back in the barracks playing cards and they always took care of me after that, but I digress. Quit pointing out how bad being tired is. They know all about it. They were there in the rain and got no sleep last time out, they took the pain and rushed on this morning. And I kept us going the first time and could have kept us going the second, but too many were too tired for me to keep up. We need to hurry along and if Mack and I are a little tired at the end, how much combat effectiveness are you really losing? I mean he usually hits like a not so angry girl and I really don't hurt people much if at all with my whip, so all of the damage dealers will; still be on top of their game, so no harm, no foul. Just ease back. I'm not the cleric that let you all down last time. It'll be OK."
His motivational speech over with, Cameron gets back up front and fails to help 'Osul at all with the tracking. He does keep his eyes peeled for trouble though

The group moves out. Carver offers to carry Mack and Cameron so they don't have to put in a 4 hour run. Mack accepts, but Cameron is not so inclined. Osul has the trail and most others keep an eye about them for other trouble.
Mack finds that riding bareback on Carver is not the easiest thing. As long as nothing gets too exciting he knows he is not in danger of falling off, but it does take effort to stay aboard.
About 2 hours into the trail, you come upon where the orcs and captive dwarves took camp, which now places them firmly 4-6 miles in front of you. The camp was set with no fire so it is very hard to tell when they left. The trail breaks hard south from the camp. Osul notes some prints, 2 of the orcs, continued west, but then doubled back after about 50 yards.

Cameron has been Hustling for the first 2 hours, he is fatigued and has 3HP non lethal Damage
The time of day is approximately 2pm

Carver and Mack quickly come to an agreement, that Mack jumps off at the first sign of trouble. Osul has the trail and the rest have their eyes open for danger. The Druid is finding the trail tremendously easy to follow. And starts to put together a picture. The orcs are moving almost in single file, the dwarves are near the front. A small scuffle step is located near a small bit of blood and spit on a rock, the only nice flat rock in the area.

Atlas suggest that he and Osul move further ahead, but within sight of the group. Everyone but Cameron can easily keep pace with the duo and Cameron does not seem willing to not push to help close the gap. The terrain ahead is desolate, red clay and laced with tumbleweeds and scragbrush. The partially cloudy sky is helping some, but the heat is certainly present.

DM. not sure I follow on the scout ahead. Is the group going to wait while Atlas and Osul take a point loke lead, say 100 yards? I ask because if Cameron pulls another 2 hours of Hustle the group effectively stays together and only Cameron suffers any temporary issues....until healed

" I mean dwarves are no faster than I am, and hobbled dwarves ( there was a mention of the dwarf tracks looking like they were wearing leg shackles, I think of i as a three legged man race set up) move slower than that. Cameron grits his teeth and takes the exhaustion in stride.
They don't get it, do they.
No, they do not. One tired person when a fight starts that can heal themselves and remove the problem is acceptable. Two, who require others to heal them is too much of a risk. There is no gain without sacrifice. It is her way.
They are fools. Why do you put up with it. They are weak. You should move on.
You see weakness in them because they care about the well being of a friend. That isn't weakness. It is compassion. You see them as fools because they do not see the wold as we do. There are many views to a single story. Each is unique, none are wrong. Just different, colored by the experiences of the viewer.
You are hopeless, what does she see in you.
She sees that I am persistent, like the hunter. She sees that I am patient, like the spider in his web. She sees that I have learned sacrifice and practice it over and over in her name, showing devotion. What does she see in you Hobbes?
At this the scorpion falls silent. It scuttles and climbs on top of Cameron's head, brooding.
Cameron's grimace turns to a smile.
" I'll be fine. Let's keep moving."

Orc Hunt Rough Haul
Monday October 19th, 2015 9:51:31 AM

Very sorry gentlemen

The group spreads out a bit with Osul and Atlas taking up about a 90 foot lead. Cameron and Owen follow with Carver brining up the rear with Mack upon his. Cameron voices a bit of frustration on not gaining more quickly upon their quarry, but tracking is not an exact science. An hour behind, two hours, its a judgment call. Cameron is determined to press on and so he does.

The group eats lunch on the go, hard tact rations and splashes of water and pushes on. The terrain is shifting to more small ravines and trenches where ancient now gone rivers and flash floods coursed. through the lands.

It is near the end of your 8 hour march, shortly after sunset, that Osul finds the next deliberate sign. Upon a small embankment of soft sand, Osul finds an arrow. Not one fired from a bow, but one 'written' into the sand with the only liquid likely available to the dwarves, urine. This clear biological marker gives the druid valuable information. The Orcs are only a few miles in front of the party. The arrow points hard west, the trail follows the shallow ravine to the south, curving east

I take this opportunity to begin walking again, and thank Carver for helping me along. "That was VERY appreciated Carver, and if you are ever shrunk down (or me enlarged greatly), I will repay the favor." :)

I vote we follow the direction the arrow is pointing. Although they could be signaling where maybe a few broke off to ambush us? Is Osul able to learn anything from the tracks in the area?

If we close in even more, enough for a few of us to sneak in and get a better look, I go into Stealth mode to go find out what I can.

Cameron arrives at the campsite, prepares to eat a quick snack and get some rest. He hopes that the others will agree to set off around midnight or soon after so that they can close the gap before the orcs wake up and start pushing the dwarves further.
" Everyone other than myself should have fresh spells memorized. Once I pray tonight, say around 1am, I will be ready to move on again and close the distance before they get up in the morning to move out. Does that sound alright to the rest of you?"
Cameron does not bother with his tent. He simply scratches out a small hide and curls up in his blanket. He also suggests not lighting a fire or making much noise tonight. He will be sleeping in his chain shirt.

OOC
Cameron has 10 points of nonlethal damage that will go away at a rate of 3 points per hour of rest. I assume that once camp is made and we are just sitting and eating, we are considered resting. Even if we aren't the first watch is probably 3 hours long, which should be enough time for Cameron to mostly recover, and finish while he prays.
I will be posting from my parents PC this week while mine is in the shop. I will probably only be checking once or twice a day because of that.

Orc Hunt Camp decisions
Tuesday October 20th, 2015 10:58:46 AM

Darkness lays across the broken and jagged terrain of old washed out ravines and twisting loose rocky paths where the party stands to make camp. The basic plan is laid out to rest for about 4 hours and then force march for what should be about an hour and attack the orcs camp in the dark. Cameron will have had enough rest to recover and so it would only be if the last hour poses any type of issues with any of them.
Owen asks Cameron, being the only caster who will be able to switch any spells to prepare Longstrider and spells for fighting in the dark. The wizard takes first watch with Atlas
Carver points out that the arrow, laid down by the dwarves, points in a very different direction than the trail. Osul seconds the thought that the dwarves might know something about the terrain that they and perhaps the orcs do not. He would like to investigate and Mack is with him on the thought.

Does Mack and Osul strike out into the dark on their own? If so how long do you want to go?
Is anyone, other than Cameron going to get any rest?

The terrain in small sharp hills with multiple steep sided, but not deep small ravines. 4-8' deep, 10-20' wide but near vertical walls on the depth. The ground is loose broke rock on the hillsides and hard compacted clay and river stones in the ravines proper. It is currently around 8pm and dark with scattered cloud cover and visibility of about 10' with 20' as shadowy. Some small spires of rock dot the area

If we're within a couple miles from them, I don't feel the need to rest for myself. Also, if the dwarves gave us a sign, it would seem like a mistake to not check on it at least somewhat. But I don't want it to slow down our final approach on the orcs, either.

Osul, what do you say? You and I spend an hour checking it out? Maybe they're pointing out a trap, so I'm careful of that as well. More than likely, though, it's a huge mound of treasure, and super-powered magic items right off the path.

To the rest of the group staying behind, if we get into trouble, we'll give a sign. Probably a high-pitched scream. :)

Cameron then passes out without waiting for whatever sad and pointlessly negative reply Carver cooks up. Really he wondered what had made the Centaur so pissy the past day or so. He had never been so negative in the Fist.
Casmeron sleeps soundly until midnight and then wakes up and streches. He steps away from camp and prays to Jancassis for spells.
Jancassis tonight I go to bring your liberating hand to those who have sought our aid. But something seems off. Please guide my hand so that I might be able to recognize who is really the victim here and who is crying for your blessed revenge.
When he is done, at 1 am, he speaks to the others. " Gird yourselves for this, as it will be a hard hour. We will be forced marching and if any of us need it at the destination I can heal you to remove the fatigue. I want to speak to the Orcs first. You may conceal yourselves but I wish to step out and walk among them and ask them why they have taken the Dwarves. Something is wrong here. Orcs do not normally take their racial enemies hostage. I have prepared a spell to stop them from attacking me, if all goes well. It is broken if ANY of them are attacked, so please keep the peace unless they are about to kill me or the dwarves, then feel free to stop them. Let's go."

If I'm not mistaken, orcs have some sort of night vision as well, which is an issue. However, maybe we can use that to our advantage. After one exchange with them we could have some of our magic folk light the place up like it's daytime and see if that gives us an opening. Hey, magic folks, can you do that?"

Turning to Cameron, "You always want to talk. I don't like it, but you've got a good point. Maybe we'll learn something if you do. However, at some point I'm putting my sword through them."

Orc Hunt It's Really Dark Out
Wednesday October 21st, 2015 9:00:47 PM

Osul and Mack head up and out to follow the general direction of the arrow and see what they can see.
Carver points out a few issues with going after the orcs in the dark, not the least of which are they can see further and clearer than anyone in the group. Cameron makes himself as comfortable as he can and finds sleep to be a fairly easy thing to come by in his fatigued condition. Before he drifts off, he tells those around that his plan is to channel energy to remove any fatigue the group incurs on the forced march coming up. he will then cast a spell of protection and then approach the orcs to parley with them. hopefully to find out why they took the dwarves.
Atlas expresses his concern but agrees with the plan as a whole.
The rest of the party keeps look out, which is to say, they are awake, because no one can see anything in the dark past 20'.

Osul and Mack find the going treacherous and hard in the dark as well. Osul quickly realizes, as they stumble up a small loose gravel hill, that if there is a landmark of some kind or course correction to make, he'll never see it. He and Mack are walking nearly blind away from a dark and, for all intent and purposes, hidden camp where the other are. With little starlight and no fixed points, this could go very wrong.

"While Cameron can cast one light on a item, I just haven't learned that trick. I convinced a guy at the Catacombs to cast what he uses to make a everburning torch, but anchor it to this pebble. I imagine holding onto a flame might be useful to impress some of the less intelligent races we might run into, as well, it's just plain handy at times.

Osul can easily put light on a coin or pebble or other such small object. It makes the travel much easier and certainly no longer dangerous but holding a heading is still very difficult. Coming back to the camp will be retracing footsteps. Mack follows and the pair eventually return with little to tell. They found a small yet deep wash run that provided good moving to the east. If that is what the arrow was pointing to, the wash run went further than time allowed for them to explore. They saw no distinctive rock spire, but that is of no surprise
Mack and Osul are back with the group and in just over two more hours, Cameron awakens mostly refreshed and now does the group push through the dark after the orcs or take the path found by Osul

I want to follow the wash, but I see the wisdom in sticking with the trail."

Cameron finishes praying and walks back into the camp. He listens to the recon report and watches as the others waver as to which path to take. He had been watching 'Osul all day as he tracked and was pretty sure he could follow the trail. Whether the trail indicated by the arow was a trap or a short cut didn't matter to Cameron, he was planning on walking into their camp and trying to get to the bottom of the situation anyway. So he did as the Fist trained him. He acted.
" I'm following their trail. Whether that other path is a trap or not, it doesn't go where I am planning on going according to what you guys saw."
Cameron refreshes the light spell on his crossbow bolt and then casts Longstrider on himself. He looks around for a moment and thinks he finds the trail. If anyone better at tracking wants to lead he lets them, otherwise he heads out following the trail or the orcs and dwarves.

Osul and Mack tell the others what they found. The group settles on heading out in the dark following the trail and not the arrow laid down by the dwarven captives. Cameron casts light and eliminates the darkness issue as far as following the tracks is concerned. The light provides 20' of light and an additional 20' of dim light. Carver follows in behind Cameron and then the others, Atlas, Osul, Mack, and Owen. While Mack and Owen are not within the light that Cameron holds, or even in the dim light, they can easily see the cleric and the others.

Over an hour later and Cameron still moves along the ground, the trail still easy to follow. The tracks remain as they have been, single file, dwarves near the front and along the bottom of the the shallow dry river beds

Atlas is getting worried. They are vulnerable in the dark and even more so with this bright light. He struggles with what to do. He wants to save the dwarfs, but not at the cost of all their lives. It feels like they are all marching to their death while the gods look on and shake their heads at their stupidity. Then there is the arrow to consider. Why was it there? They are missing something. "We have to stop. This is foolish, we are walking to our deaths like this. I want to be brave and save them as much as anyone, but this is pure folly. Our grave stones, that we would never get from our Orc friends, would read, 'Ignored the obvious due to youthful ignorance, only to be eaten by orcs. Learn your lesson young adventurers.'

Atlas stops, ready for debate.

Cameron is hurt bad, and hopes that the rest of the team shows up and hurts something really soon. He is also worried about the two orcs standing executioner style behind the dwarves. The axe nearly takes his head clean off. He knows what he needs to do and doesn't hesitate. He slips around the orcish ax-man while drawing his shield and whip and flanks for Carver and Atlas if the human moves around a little bit. Only his people are hurt so once he moves and gets the dwarves within range, he channels energy (provided the AoO doesn't kill him) Heal everyone within 30' of Cameron for 11 hit points of damage

OoC: I don't know how concealment works with AoE attacks, but I'll give it the old college try.

IC: It is unlikely that Carver heard Owen as the orcs attacked, but if the sharp pain of a sword blow heightened focused his senses he might have heard Owen take a deep breath in preparation for the fight to come. In any case, no one nearby can help but notice the shimmering, spinning clash of colored light that flows up and out over the hill, flooding it with a momentary and kaleidoscopic flare. When his vision clears of the spell's afterimage, Owen opens his eyes and quickly tosses a handful of sand into the air. Instead of falling, it floats up and out of sight. In the distance, two orcs (hopefully) slump to the ground, asleep.

I am moving to the left of Atlas, alongside the difficult terrain. I'm assuming that there are some trees in the area. I plan on hitting one with a "Light" spell (hopefully in T16).

OOC: The Light spell works on any "object". I'm not sure what defines an object, but if bolts and stones work, I assume, at the very least, dead branches work. I cast it on a tree if that's possible (dead tree vs. live tree if that makes a difference - size of the object is not specified), lighting up the area pretty well. :) ("shedding normal light in a 20-foot radius from the point touched, and increasing the light level for an additional 20 feet by one step") I'm hoping this hurts the orcs eyes more then ours, especially since we're all facing away from it, and they are facing towards it. It should put all of those close orcs (and dwarves) within the light at least somewhat.

I'm not sure if the Light will help or hinder my stealth. It obviously makes it easier to see, but also blinds the orcs looking towards us for a while to. I'm hoping to at least attempt to stay stealthy if possible, and took my -5 penalty for moving normal speed again.

Atlas grunts as the arrow sticks into him. "I'll have to break that off at some point...grrr" He always seems to start slow and it appears that today is no different. With a deep breath to re-focus, he balances himself and strikes again with his sword. This time his aim is true and he impales the orc on his sword.

Seeing Cameron go down adds to the situations at hand. Without his healing, and the archers still firing, things do not look good for the group. Atlas contemplates rushing after the orc that just took Cameron down, but he hesitates as he feels the arrow in his leg flex at the thought. Anger pulses through him and he grabs a potion and drinks it without an afterthought.

OK, so everyone wants me to be there, I guess I am. My point was that if the AoO happened while I moved, I would not have gotten the channeloff, nor reached my final destination. But, for ease of reference, and all the flanking that occurred, I'll stay where I am on the map. There was no channel though, since I only had 1 hp when I moved the orc would have dropped me before I could do that.
IC
Cameron started to move and then felt the axe bite him again, hard. He looked down and saw what he thought was the axe blade protruding from his chest... but the orc was behind him...

" Not a real bright move there champ That orc put his axe all the way through you this time around. I don't think the mail even slowed it down any. Definitely gonna leave a mark."
Hobbes was back, just in time to annoy Cameron as his spirit fought hard to hold onto his body. Clearly the recent turn of events amused the scorpion, since Cameron's last words to Hobbes had not been complimentary ones.
" So can you see the rivulets of Wolds Blood yet buddy? The others are pretty busy, don't think they are gonna make it to you in time. Guess you get to be on the receiving end of the trip to the land of rest this time instead of the one initiating it huh? Remember to act politely to Gargul. He hates it when people don't show him the proper respect, respect he has earned. Maybe your Lady will be there too. I know the one I know and love will be. Let's see if they are one and the same eh?"
The little scorpion is really beginning to annoy Cameron now, as he fights to hold his spirit and body together. He wants to reach out and swat the thing. But then he recalls his test, the test he passed. A calm washes over him and he uses it to center his mind and remain calm. His bleeding wasn't stopping, but his friends were still up last he saw. They would probably save him.

I am just going by the order I posted my actions in and assuming that the Orc would AoO as soon as he could, which would leave me where I started. He COULD have waited for me to arrive before swinging but it doesn't make as much sense. What he couldn't have waited for was the channel which doesn't provoke an AoO, so sadly I go down and no one else gets healed, leaving the rest of the team pretty banged up and facing more orcs. I am kinda place holding too until Dan weighs in on how it happened and what if any of the things went off. He may have been confused because I added the channel into my hp when I posted it. That may have made him think I would survive the AoO and live to make the channel. Sorry if that was what happened Dan.

OOC i think i have where Cameron would have been dropped. Yes the orc took AoO at first chance so to me you move the 5' where you are going and the AoO happens and yes the channeling healing in you header threw me, but no worries. This happens PbP now and then. We proceed from here with Cam where he is folks

Osul moves the flaming sphere back at the orc with the ax. The orc sidesteps the fire and is unhurt
Mack calls out the position of the archers and moves up the slope to engage the orc, but misses with his strike You cannot 5' step into difficult terrain and had to use a Move Action. That means you cannot use a Full Attack action to Flurry of Blows. Just the first attack counted
Owen moves up the slope while drawing his dagger and he slashes at the nearest orc. Owen sees that the orcs are NOT unconscious from his spell. They are only stunned
Atlas calls for the stunned orcs to be taken out quickly and attacks the only still combat ready orc near him. His strike does not connect however. He pulls a potion from his pack and as he does so the orc slashes back at him missing. Potion in hand, Atlas drinks the curing elixer
Carver shouts for someone to get to Cameron and he continues attacking the stunned orcs. The wounded orc is till standing, though the wounds are certainly mortal without magical intervention. Yet the orc stubbornly stands.

The orc attacks Atlas again. Hit AC 11 Miss The orc sword never gets close
The orcs archers take aim at Mack and let fly. Two of the shafts hit

Blood continues to seep into the dried floor of the riverbed and Hobbes continues to taunt Cameron and try to disturb his concentration on staying alive.
" Just think, you'll be able to see all the people that went to the Land of Rest before you. Your parents, Morgan the dwarf who raised you, Rusty the Lion. You might also see all those folks you have sent there. Alot of those too aren't there. Hope they are pretty forgiving or they might have already talked to the lady of vengeance about you. That would be messy wouldn't it."
Cameron redoubles his efforts and closes out Hobbe's prattling in the back of his mind. He focuses on the rough feel of the riverbed uder him and the knowledge that he failed by moving before channeling. Had he done it properly, the dwarves would have not been healed, but he would still be standing to try and help them.

Owen was so busy fighting orcs that he did not realize he had his hands full. He drops his crossbow, freeing a hand for the gestures necessary in casting a Sleep spell. He does not spend time tossing rose petals or sand about; a few motions of the hand and a stern incantation draw closed the eyelids of several orcs.

"That should distract the archers for a bit.", he calls out.

Dead is negative constitution score, so no, not dead yet.
Casting any spell takes as long as the spell says it takes to cast in it's description. Almost always this is at least a standard action. Casting another light spell will canel the one you have in effect, also as it says in the description. This is why I cast my one and that was all I could do to light up the hill.
As far as the map goes, I haven't looked at it since I took my dirt nap.

I wondered that too Graham. I think it is an elevation change and the space costs that much "extra" to enter.
Eric, I would like to say you could do it, but there are things working against that. The spell assumes you are in possession of the object to be lit with the light spell, thus there is no save. Were you to try to "light" someone else or one of the objects in their possession then they would deserve a save. Since the spell lists no save, I would lean toward the conclusion that while it would be a good idea to light you opponent or say his belt buckle so that he can be a magnet for random missile fire, that seems to be beyond the scope of the spell. Check with DM Dan or Rob for final say though.

Cameron lies unnervingly still
Owen casts Sleep at the orc archers and all 3 of them collapse to the ground

Atlas attacks, but the blow is deflected by the orcs wooden shield

Then he speaks words of power and his bonded ring glows faintly. Its light grows with increasing speed until it flashes outwards in a pulsating cone of vibrant color. The spell narrowly misses Carver's hooves and Durbin's boots as it spreads outward among the nearby orcs.

As the lights subside, Owen recites a brief incantation. It is clear that Owen has practiced this spell quite often. With a brief gesture, he disappears. Highlight to display spoiler: {Using the last of his heroic burst of energy, Owen jogs around behind Korbiss.}

Standard Action: casting Color Spray with the help of Owen's bonded ring. Diagonal cone that hits Orcs 4, 1, and 6. I'm guessing the orcs have three or four hit dice based upon the way his first color spray affected them. If Orc 6 has recovered from his blindness (but is still stunned) he should be affected by this spell. Any orcs affected get a saving Will throw against DC 15. If an orc fails that throw it will be blinded and stunned for 3 rounds and then stunned for 1.

I cast Cure Light Wounds (my 1 for the day) on Cameron, healing him 6, and stopping his downward spiral.

OOC: I can't update the map while at work, or my character sheet to remove the Hero Point. I will do so later tonight. But I am ending in T12. I can't remember if I can't do a 5' step IN difficult terrain, or IN TO difficult terrain. If I can't do it INTO, I'll simply go to S13 first. I'll still be able to close the gap, so it shouldn't matter.
Osul, I see you are planning on healing Cameron as well. I figured he's going to need more then 1, so I headed over there as well, just in case something else bad happens.
Question on "objects" for spells, such as Light. Is there a size? It sounds like living creatures don't count as objects, but plants do? Just trying to understand where I draw the line for planning purposes later. :) So I can hold the Light spell, and use it when I hit something with my fists of furry... but not the living creature. But I'm assuming I could light up the clothing or such? No save, which is awesome. :)

"Never mind that, apparently the gods have another plan for me other than killing foul creatures." Atlas follows up with a few curses under his breath to emphasize his frustration.

Orc Hunt Ambush Round 7  d20=8 ; d20=6 ;
Thursday November 5th, 2015 10:42:27 PM

Carver strikes the orc in front of him and it takes everything to take the beast down, but it topples before his onslaught
Owen casts another cone of dazzling color into the orcs. Both orcs stop in their tracks and drop their weapons from their now number hands. Owen then vanishes again and does invisible stuff
Cameron notices a set of narrow eyes staring back from the grey lands, just beyond the Woldsblood. They burn bright with white hot energy for a moment and then vanish
Mack moves next to Cameron and casts a healing spell, pulling the cleric back from the brink Mack you should have been able to simply move and then cast the spell. I don;t think you needed to burn a Hero Point. Light spell will not affect anything that is living, including plants. As i read it, there is no size limit.
Osul arrives shortly after and casts more healing into Cameron
Atlas notes that Cameron is in good hands and attacks, but misses the orc

The orc with the great ax stands stunned, his weapon now lying at his feet
The orc next to him remains stunned as well
The orc nearest Durbin, turns and runs away, barely visible in the shadows to the party Orc2 has 20% concealment
The orc by Korbiss takes off as well. His route, to the right of the map quickly takes him into the deep darkness of the night
The last archer in the darkness does not fire another shot, but where he might be is impossible to say

OOC: Owen: Yah, I wasn't sure if I WANTED to know what you were doing when invisible! :)

OOC2: I figured I needed to do a 5' step to avoid giving the orc4 an AoO, and doing only a 5' step didn't get me close enough to Cameron.

IC: If I understand correctly, the 3 orcs remaining right by us are all stunned. If that's the case, no AoO, so I move (to W14) and attack orc6 (flanking with Carver).

(flurry of blows: d20+4-1 for each blow, and d4-1 damage
Hit AC 12 for 3 damage)

OOC3: I'm trying to avoid an AoO, so if I can't move where I did, I move next to the dwarves, and cast Magic Fang on myself. I also only did 1 attack, because if I'm understanding correctly, I can't use both attacks when I do more than a 5' move. Correct?

DM: Correct, more than a 5' free move and you cannot make a full attack action which is required for Flurry. You cannot Free 5' INTO or IN difficult terrain. All orcs are stunned right now and so no worries this round

OOC
That is correct. A flurry of blows is a full round action granting you and extra attack at the cost of a little accuracy. You can only take such a full round action by using both your move and standard actions to complete it. Thus you could take a 5' step and flurry, but not move say 10' and still do it. When you make the single attack though, don't take the penalties for a flurry, simply make a normal attack.
Owen I kinda got a charge out of "Owen does invisible things" too.
IC
Cameron feels what should be soft healing positive energy rush into his body. It hits him like a bucket of ice water and stops the blood from rushing out of his wounds. He isn't totally healed, but he is breathing again and able to move again, and it feels glorious. He rolls to his feet and a wave of dizziness and nausea threaten to knock him right back down. He swallows hard a couple of times and shoots his arms out to his sides to steady himself. Looking to either side he can see Mack and 'Osul, probably the ones who saved him. They look scared and he guesses that what he remembers must have been the very edge of the lands of rest. A chill and a shudder run through him as he remembers the eyes just before being pulled back.
" Thanks guys. I'm shaky but I'll be OK. Help the dwarves."
With a shaking hand Cameron reaches out for the magic of his goddess and finds it. He holds the thread desperately and twists it from it's original purpose into a healing spell. He sends the magic into himself, removing the sickness, but almost falling down with the effort.
Change Bless into CLW and heal myself for 6 healing
Once he is steady on his feet again he looks around and is shocked and stunned by what he sees. Mack and Carver hacking and beating unarmed and seemingly incapacitated foes. Now the anger of his goddess flows into him far stronger than the healing power had a moment before.
" Carver, Mack, Stop this at once. Their weapons are in the dirt and they are not resisting you. By all that is holy and good take them prisoner. Were we to see anyone else commit violence on such helpless foes we would call them evil. Calm your bloodlust and take their surrender, PLEASE....please stop."

Cameron sighed.
It had been hard for him to see at first, especially since they had nearly killed him, but he had the vision given to him by those eyes he saw just before waking. This was wrong. Some of the enemies were stunned, some were asleep and the rest were fleeing. If they were not restrained, they might still try to fight when they regained their senses, which is what his friends feared. But fear was no longer a concern for Cameron. Jancassis had tested him and he had proven to her he was worth the investment of her time and power. This was slaughter when it could be a chance to learn why the normally civil orcs had attacked. True, from what he had learned at the Tree they were not the friendliest of neighbors, but this was very out of character even for them. Something had changed, and they needed to know what that was. So they needed them alive.
Further there were MANY orcs in Izen. If they killed the incapacitated ones while the runners watched, then there would never be a way to parlay with them ever again. They would take this fight as a cue to how it would be in the future and never try to talk or take prisoners. The next caravan they attacked would be killed to the last person. The olive branch needed to be offered by someone, it had to be them.
Finally, he saw Jancassis as a protector of those who were powerless against their oppressors. No one could be more powerless right now than these incapacitated orcs. As her priest he was honor bound to protect them. He had to stop the slaughter.
" Look, they tried their best to kill me, and now they are not even able to raise their hand to stop you from killing them. They didn't finish me when they easily could have. At the Tree they said the orcs were not normally like this. Something has happened to make them do this. If we finish them off when we could have spared them we won't find out what it was, and we will have the enmity of every orc in Izen. Those are stupid odds to ask for for no good reason. Keep killing them while they run and I am out. I'll head back to the Tree and be gone before you walk back. Of all of you I have the most right to vengeance, one of the cornerstones of my religion, and I lay it aside in order to prevent future unnecessary conflict. I ask you to do the same. Tie them up and let's get to the root of this problem."
Cameron holds his breath, waiting to see if he is once again, on his own. From the tickle in his stomach he realized that Jancassis's tests apparently couldn't remove ALL of the fear from someones life.

The rope bonds on Korbin and Durbis are cut and fall away from the pair. They are still bound with a set of iron shackles at the leg, but they can now use their hands. The dwarfs thank the unseen savior and get to their feet, albeit, slowly and gingerly.
Osul casts another healing spell into Cameron
Mack moves to assist Carver and strikes the orc in the kidney
Cameron, now conscious, casts his own healing spell into himself and calls for the other to take the remaining orcs prisoner.

The two orcs in front of Carver, Atlas and Mack remain stunned from the Color Spray

Carver, sheathes his sword and begins retrieving rope from his pack. They have plenty to tie a couple orcs up
Mack slips off and stealthily makes his way towards Korbin and Durbiss. the pair are still bound by the iron shackles. In the dim torchlight glow of a Light spell, Mack can see they are covered in dirt, grime, sweat, blood, and from the smell urine and fecal matter as well. " Look at this from this perspective Carver. Orcs and dwarves fight each other and hate each other the way that Minotaurs and Centaurs used to back in Mathilda's day. Back in her time, it would be rare for a group to take the other prisoner unless there was a good reason. These dwarves were merchants if I understood correctly. If they are the owners of this caravan, then the orcs would have no one to ransom them to. I think they took them for another reason. If I am wrong, then we take the orcs back and they get tried and executed for the dead people we found at the combat site. If I am right, thn we get to the bottom of what the orcs really want. What can it hurt?"

Orc Hunt Ambush

We are going to step out of combat after this

Mack asks the dwarfs if he can help and if they had left the last sign. Durbin smiles through swollen and bloody lips, "Was thinking you would Mack. Though you were supposed to follow it and not us." Korbiss nods, Not that we're not grateful, but we thought it would be easier to ambush them, stead of the other way round."
Atlas heads into the dark where the archers were dropped by Owen's spell. What he does precisely is very hard to tell. He is heading back faster than one might expect though, he he securely tied them.
Cameron and Carver secure the last two orcs and Cameron opens conversation with why the orcs would take the dwarfs captive and not simply kill them and take all of their things.
As Atlas returns, Cameron suspects what happened on the nearby hill, it wont be happening to the three now secured orcs
Osul asks if anyone can magically clean the dwarfs.

Korbin and Durbiss bristle a bit, taking in the group. Korbiss addresses Atlas, "That was pretty stupid boy."
Durbin follows in closely with a back hand to Korbiss' head, "Manners you stinkin mule. They risked thier lives, sure in a horribly dumb mule like fashion, but still. risked their lives to save your worthless hide."
Korbiss looks over "you were just as saved"
"Ap! No, I had already worked out my escape plan while using your bloated corpse as a diversion!"

Before Carver leaves, or whatever, Cameron channels energy to heal the group, the dwarves and the captives. If any of the downed orcs are still alive they would be healed too, and may stand up, so Cameron remains ready.

Channel energy to heal everyone within 30' for 5 damage(added into my header already)

Cameron will then proceed to cast Zone of truth on those present. He explains this is to get to the bottom of what happened here. He dos not resist it and automatically fails his saving throw. He then asks the dwarves what happened. He does not allow them to meander and tell a long winded story, he just wants the facts. He then asks the orcs the same question.

He also takes the key from the orc formerly armed with the great axe and hands it to Mack to unlock the dwarves with ( I assume he is in charge and that he has it)

DC 14 will save required to not be under the spell

Zone of Truth (3 minute duration)
Creatures within the emanation area (or those who enter it) can't speak any deliberate and intentional lies. Each potentially affected creature is allowed a save to avoid the effects when the spell is cast or when the creature first enters the emanation area. Affected creatures are aware of this enchantment. Therefore, they may avoid answering questions to which they would normally respond with a lie, or they may be evasive as long as they remain within the boundaries of the truth. Creatures who leave the area are free to speak as they choose.

I take some time to appreciate the humor in Cam trying to stop the dwarves from telling long-winded stories about what happened.

"Most of your thanks should go to Cameron, he was a zealot about saving you at the cost of our own lives. I would have likely had the group take a more conservative approach. Either way, I'm glad to see you two are still alive and in good spirits."

Atlas looks to Cameron. "Question them, then we kill them. These are not innocent creatures, they will kill when they are set free and every death would be on our heads. You don't just leave orcs alone to live in peace, it is not how they work and you should know that better than any of us. I won't allow them to be set free. If you want to fight over it then consider yourself an enemy of mine, because no friend of mine would allow for evil like this to roam the land looking for its next kill."

Atlas stands by the orcs ready to put his knife through them. He's not going to put up with any shenanigans either. He won't let the orcs be untied or moved, they stay here until they are dead.

Owen, while still invisible brings up the need to make some sort of defensible camp. The party is still i pretty hostile territory and several orcs did run. Would they return?
Carver casts Dancing Lights and plan to head out and run a circuit patrol
Osul offers to accompany him
Mack has already unshackled the dwarfs and grins to himself as Cameron begins to ask them direct questions
Cameron channels some healing energy to the all around, none of the fallen orcs move or take note of it. He is about to continue when Atlas makes his position very clear.

The orcs are evil and they will be killed

Cameron, whip in hand does intend to allow Atlas to get close enough to use his blade. The whip won't hurt the fighter, but in the clerics rather capable hands, it could disarm him

Durbin and Korbiss both move a bit closer themselves. Korbiss responds to Atlas. "I'm not sure I'm up for thanking the one that almost got you killed boy." He looks to Cameron, "What daft idiot attacks an orc war party in the dark."
Durbin interjects, "They weren't in the dark. Remember they were carrying that glowing light letting the orcs know for hours that they were a coming"
"Ah you're right, my bad. Surprised they didn't bang symbols together and sing while they were at it."
"Well, sure they thought about it..." Durbin grins and spits out some blood. "But you did come and did win and we do thank you"

Korbiss takes a small step towards Cameron and extends his right hand
Durbin takes several marching strides towards Atlas and also extends his right hand

Carver and Osul have not left yet as Atlas and Cameron square off over the prisoners

Note I did back up a couple actions, namely Carver and Osul exiting and teh Zone of Truth from Cameron. Also remember we are here for fun, and we are playing heroes, not just adventuring kinda nice guys. People who strive and do more, Characters that others universally look up to. Superman and Charles Xavier, not Batman The idea is that characters in the Wold aspire to idealistic standards of good. Can you fall short, sure, can your character miss the mark, sure, but just keep the ideal in mind

" 'Osul you were right. A different halfling did come with you from the one that went into the Red Hils. The old one would have considered what Atlas just said and agreed, figuring that Orcs that may even have had a good reason to do what was done today deserved to die for things they might have done in the past. That Cameron has stood the test of his goddess though and does not walk with you any more. That Cameron has seen a person that had every right to distrust him and let him die, stand by his side and offer, against the rules off the trials to make sure he lived. That Cameron has felt the pain that comes when revenge is delivered and still bears the marks of that pain. That Cameron knows that revenge is never dealt easily and is always done with a purpose. That Cameron swore to goddess and to a group that he would do the right thing even if it wasn't the easy thing. In short, that old Cameron is gone. I'll hear the reasons Atlas and if justice is due that justice will be done, no matter to whom it is due. You'll not kill another helpless captive while I draw breath. Both of our actions in the next few moments will decide the future for us."
"You see while at the Tree I have learned a few things from their books. When the Green Dragon Parnoth was killed by the Emerald Dragons the heroes faced problrms with the Orc tribes that lived over th river in Izen. Tribes with strong histories of Honor and Strength and they RESOLVED those problems. If a nw problem has arisen and the Orcs have resorted to Jancassis to resolve their issues, then her cleric will do what is needed to resolve them again. If the Orcs have just decided to take to raiding then the Emerald Kingdom will resolve the matter as a kingdom. But under no circumstances will a captive I have bound be executed while still bound and I breathe. Worshiper of a goddess most distrust I may be, but evil I am not."
" Korbiss, Durbin, I am Cameron Honeytamer Steelshaper. Son to Carter and Lily Honeytamer and raised and fostered by Clan Steelshaper and accepted as one of them by their patriarch. Named Dwarfkin I can speak for the clan when called upon and will defend it and it's interests to the death. I follow Jancassis, bringer of Hope and Vengeance to the downtrodden and cleric of hunting and venom. Had I wanted to have approached unseen I would have, but apparently my head was filled with the learning of a different time and I thought I dealt with honorable foes. As it turns out most of my companions only wanted to fight, not deal with the job at hand. For that I apologize, "

Diplomacy 16, 18 to dwarves.

Apparently my stand of honor is also annoying him to the point he would leave while captives are slain rather than stand for the good his nature would normally uphold. Currently he wants to slap the sense the gods gave a mule into me, but is too well mannered to interfere one way or another. 'All that needs to be done for evil to triumph is for good folk to look the other way' I don't remember who said it, but I won't be looking anywhere tonight but to the welfare of our captives. The march may have nearly killed me, but dwarves and their kin are made of stern enough stuff to handle a little discomfort."

I've tried to Detect Evil, the jury is still out, apparently My Lord Gargul has decided to with hold the ability granted by his will. I shall attempt again though."
Carver again uses Detect Evil on the Orcs, and by chance on the Dwarves as well since they are near one another.

Owen again suggests creating a safe camp. He suggests it may also allow some time fro Cameron and Atlas to cool off a bit
Carver uses Detect Evil. One of the orcs, the wielder of the great ax, shows as Faint and the other 2 do not show at all. Neither do the dwarfs.
Mack offers to help in questioning the orcs
Owen too suggests camp

Cameron casts the Zone of Truth spell, encompassing the orcs and the dwarfs and the party at large

All 3 orcs are conscious and bound

Durbin glances back at Carver, "Bit rude of you I think there. What looking over me and mine. Fast enough to trusting..." Korbiss cuts him off with a cough and then addresses Cameron

Korbiss wrinkles his nose and spits to the ground before answering Cameron, "Honorable foes?" His voice is gravely and marked with anger. "Did you not see what was left after the attack at the wagons? When do honorable foes come at you in the pitch of dark and rain arrows through the camp before closing to kill everyone and strip em down for all they had?"

Korbiss nods to Osul, "Yea, just us and just cause we're lucky."

Durbin puts a hand on Korbiss' shoulder and takes over in a more calm fashion.

"They're orcs boy, Izen wilds are full of them and much worse. Yea the Dragons made some deals and for a time it was easier. But deals don't make orcs into elves. Emerald City, The Fist, adventurer heroes and mercenaries all find coin from us merchants along the great road from Emerald to Plat City and would you like to know why we pay all that gold? It isn't safe out here and you better get to learning that as fast as you can."

"As to why me and Korbiss are still alive is simple and not just luck. Auntie Wyrmrider always said, luck only gets you so far" Durbin moves past the orc who had the great ax.
"We're stiff alive you see."
His hand cuffs the orc in the back of the head with his open hand. Leaning down at the orc he yells, in orc Highlight to display spoiler: {"Because were smarter and craftier than you!"}

Standing back up and pulling a scroll from the orcs belt, he resumes in common, "Because they think we are taking them to a hidden ancient dwarf cache."

Atlas shakes Durbin's hand, but is forced to turn back to Cameron.

"Wow, you have always talked way to much for my taste. From day one I wished we would have never run across you, but this is the last straw. You have lost your mind. This has nothing to do with revenge. This has to do with saving lives of good people. If we let them go how many innocent people will die over the next 100 years? They kill, they reproduce, their spawn kill, repeat that over and over.

"I cannot talk sense to someone that is senseless. I am not letting them go. You stand there all mighty with your whip and you think you can stop all of us. I am going back now, but I cannot in good conscious do it while leaving these foul creatures around to kill more innocent people. If to do that I have to go through you, so be it. It will just prove to me that at your core you are no different than they are. Your actions kill good people and the wold would be better without you."

Turning to Owen, [b]"Owen, this time you are wrong. If we get attacked do we want these creatures getting free and attacking us from behind? How will that make all of you feel when 'Osul is lying dead because one of these orcs here got his bound hands around his neck, or if Mack is laying dead because one of them got loose and ran him through with a hidden dagger? I can walk away, but I won't take that chance. Your deaths won't be on my conscious. Let's get this done with and move on."[b]

Atlas goes to the orcs with shield and sword in hand and plans to run them through. He is sure that Cameron will try something. If he does, he will respond, but he won't attack him first. He will give him one more chance to show that he really intends to do good in this world.

-----------------------------------------
Will Save: 1d20+2=11 (fail)

ooc: Idealistic standards of good do not mean letting evil live to kill innocent people. It is not easy for Atlas to kill them. He doesn't take pleasure in it. It is for the greater good so that others will not die. What other action should he take? Let them go? No, others will die. Main them so that they cannot kill? That isn't humane. Leave them bound and let them either die from the elements or be rescued to kill innocents again? Nope, no good there. Pack them up and take them back to the Tree? Sorry, but I don't see how that is going to work other than to provoke an attack against the tree. There is only one option that is "good" in this. This isn't superman where we write a story that always works out. This is Pathfinder and it is a game where we try to make it as real as possible while adding monsters and magic into it. There is no happily ever after. There is no "let's fight the bad guy over and over and each time he just hurts people, not kills them." There is no prison to put all the evil creatures in so that we don't have to be "bad" and not face the real issues. This is a land of monsters that kill. We are adventures trying to do good, get wealthy, learn our trades, have fun, etc. The fact that we are debating this completely baffles me.

OOC: A little light reading from an excerpt from "The halfling point of view" by ROGER MOORE from Dragon Magazine #59 (1982ish)

"Imagine, then, the effectiveness of a group of thirty halflings, wearing only leather armor and equipped with short bows, hiding in a woods by a roadside, awaiting the passage of a robber gang who cannot see or hear them. Bows are very quiet, and pinpointing the location of a bow-sniper in a forest is hard enough without having to locate a sniper who can effectively disappear in the same environment. And halflings do not shoot to wound. They have trouble taking prisoners, for the same reasons they aren’t good at close combat."

"I'm not ok with letting them go. I don't need any magic to know they are evil from what they did to the wagon group, and that is reinforced by Durbin and Korbiss's tellings. I don't feel comfortable myself slaying tied up captives though, either. I won't stop anyone from doing so though at this point. My preference would be to tie them up REAL good so they can't escape on their own, and leave them here... if we have no where to bring them. Korbiss? Durbin? You apparently speak orc. And you've been with them longer than us. Any more questions for them? Your thoughts on what to do with them?"

"Either way, we need to make a decision here, go with it, and set up a safe camp. If we're camping here for now, I'm fine with keeping them tied up for questioning, and run them thru the first sign of any attempted escape or rescue. I think everyone has given their input. I, personally, am leaving it to Atlas to make a decision now, and then we're done with it. We can't have these long, drawn out debates at every turn."

I double-check the orcs to make sure they don't have anything else on them, and then start preparing safe camp.

Cameron listens to Mack and nods his head. The other halfling is right on at least some of the points, alot of them actually. He isn't sure who might ever be a prisoner and not try to escape, or how that makes the prisoner eveil, but that is a minor point, he gets the other halflings meaning. This leads to his decision.
" No, we cannot be having this discussion all the time. You are totally correct Mack. You worry about the prisoners coming back and trying to kill you if you were to let them go. Understandable. So here's the deal. I will leave with them right now, and walk them away and presumably to their tribe. Maybe I can convince them to take up an honest living rather than being raiders. Maybe not and I end up being their next meal. I won't release them until midnight tomorrow giving you guys and us plenty of time to go our own ways, meaning you will have no fear of reprisals. If one of you would have the kindness to release my spider, scorpion and snake when you return to the... home, then that would be great. The tasks I was trying to accomplish are not going to happen while I am at odds with my companions, so I'll just change companions, or have none at all."
" I wish you all well. Try to take care of each other. Also try to remember that the deeds you do always have a way of returning to visit you when you least expect them."

Cameron turns to the orcs and motions that they should accompany him out of the camp in the direction that the runners took while leaving. He casts a light spell on his shield to light his way and walks off into the night with the orcs.

Orc Hunt Ambush

Atlas and Cameron make their positions quite clear.
The group becomes somewhat divided as a result. Cameron expands on his intention and Korbiss and Durbin then step in, to talk with Atlas and Mack. "You've always had or at least seemed to have a good head on your shoulders. If he wants to take the orcs back to look for whatever it is he thinks he needs to find, you should let him. Bigger things to be concerned about then some orcs. I know what we were saying before, but the blood and temper gets a bit up when you've been, well been through what we had. Killing beings you capture, or that others you travel with, starts you down a dark road. One you'd be better off not going down."

Korbiss nods, "Let him go, make peace and let him go."
He looks over to Carver, "better safe than sorry huh? You might think about checking your might makes right attitude. It's not going to always pay off."

The dwarfs will assist Cameron on being on his way. They also answer the other lingering questions from Osul. yes they are familiar with the area. They have been out to the south of the road many times. The 'arrow' they made was pointing to a shortcut to where they were going. The map is indeed to a dwarven cache, just not around here. Terrain is similar and so they convinced the orcs it was fairly close. Knowing Boy would get Atlas and the heroes of the Tree, they simply had to stall and round about the orcs for a while. The orcs have a small camp nearby, they came back to this location to lay in wait for the group. Some got away and likely grabbed what they could before continuing.

"We could go back now, or go there."

Cameron at this point knows he is going neither of those directions, and heads off more directly south and into the deep night

I'll be down to one Cure if we rest, and none if we don't. Either way, daylight will give us the best chance of plotting a more-or-less direct course home -- unless the dwarves and their experience have a better suggestion? I have no strong feeling about the hopefully abandoned Orc camp. I do not expect to find anything of interest - that could be a fault in my thinking, so I am willing to be proven wrong."

I have heard of creatures that are evil and chaotic, but they can assume the form and mannerisms of someone else. Seeing that most Orcs in my experience are evil, even though some of those Orcs weren't I wanted to be sure that a substitution had not been made."
Carver looks sad as his friend heads off alone...."Lord Gargul, please look after my friend Cameron, he has a long dangerous road ahead of him, even if it one of his own choosing. Thank You." Carver says softly, mostly to himself.
As camping is brought up, "Camping at the site of a battle is not the smartest idea, we should move at least an hour, we can rest just that much longer in the morning and then head back towards home, unless there somewhere else we need to escort these two gentlemen."

I listen to what my more battle-hardened comrades suggest for camping, and get ready to head out.

Atlas struggles internally with everything that is happening and it is plain in his unusual quiet demeanor after the tension subsides. He doesn't take any action to stop Cameron from taking the orcs. It isn't ideal, but neither is coming to blows with your family. So he decides it is a compromise he has to live with and he leaves it be.

He nods when Mack and 'Osul speak up. "Best not to stay here if there is an orc camp about and we had some escape. We're too beat up to take on a full host at camp, but a good night of rest should help us get where we need to deal with them if they are still there. Let's follow 'Osul's suggestion and find a place back and down in the wash. If we are not attacked in the night then we'll investigate the orc camp in the morning if everyone agrees."

ooc: My apologies to ALL for the escalated exchange/dialog. Atlas has a lot of good excuses, but I don't. I'm still coming to terms with this Superman talk and the expectations of us as players in regards to these things. I cannot seem to reconcile it with the "real world", which is funny, because magic and orcs are not in the real world and yet I accept them freely.

OOC: What do you mean "magic and orcs are not in the real world"? You're confusing me. ;)

Cameron looks around before he leaves and nods at Carver. He had been meaning t write to Pru and then this whole thing that the Fist was fighting internally came up. He knew no message would reach his friends in any timely manner, but still he had meant to write.
" I will send a messenger from time to time Carver. Try to soften your world view a bit. A hard approach like you are taking may end up hurting you rather than keeping you strong. I know that sounds odd coming from the cleric of Jancassis but there it is. I also don't mean to lave you all hurting. Recieve Jancassis blessing one last time."
Cameron channels one last time to heal up his comrades before departing.
Channel energy for 11 points of healing
Then he turns and leads the captive orcs away toward the south, where their comrades fled a few moments ago. He casts a light on his shield both to be able to direct it away from his face and toward the path they take. Once out of earshot he says to the orcs, in Common,
" So do you speak common or was all of that lost om you? You could have said something in your defense."
