Scene 5: The Best Laid Plans

DM Ken - Collect on Delivery
Friday November 20th, 2015 10:01:42 AM

Rather than engage Eagle Fist, the Agents have the the Knuckleduster and sped towards shore!

The terrain here is rocky and sandy, just beach and surrounding plains with jutting rock formations from place to place. Not too far from the infamous Shadow Mountain, it makes sense that the terrain here would be start to show some of the rock the mountain is made up of.

Their position is somewhere north of of their original landing spot, which is somewhere north of Neutronis and his camp. Nikolai and crew ponder the direction of their mission from this point forward, but the amount of time they have is questionable. Eagle Fist might be a mile or two behind, but they also had horses.

Though near the beach is a number of patches of skinny trees, heading inland seems to leave just rocks for cover. There's a small grouping of buildings up the beach that might provide cover, but from this distance (another mile), it's hard to tell exactly what they are.

Nikolai wades ashore and looks around. Buildings, some skinny trees, and rocks are the terrain ahead of them.

"Well, stealthily sneaking up on Neutronis' camp and catching him by surprise is now probably out of the question. No point in hiding in any buildings as we need to keep moving. Same thing for the trees, too easy to scout out. Our only real option seems to be head inland and through that rocky terrain seems the only real choice.

Anna, you'll leave a wet watery track in that form. Go ahead and revert back to your normal self. We'll head inland and I'll try to erase our tracks as best as possible. Meanwhile, since the Eagle Fist will have reported back to Neutronis, either already or in short order, they'll be looking for us for sure and I've no doubt the'll find us. We need to insure them we are on a peaceful mission. We need a flag of Truce.

Let's head for the trees first, take a brief rest and make that Truce flag, then head into the rocks."

Nikolai goes last but has Michael and Tinker head into the trees to scout them out before everyone else goes in.

As the last man, he tries to erase their tracks as best as possible.

The Agents keep their eyes peeled for cover, but find there literally is none other than the small collection of buildings. Their options include skirting the spare beach trees, which are barely enough to block sight of their original landing destination, or darting from rock to rock as they head south.

Alternatively, they could simply follow a southbound road heading into Alithmar.

Nikolai muses that the Eagle fists are reporting in to Neutronis. This is every bit as likely as them coming in after you in pursuit. Most fists have magical communication for sensitive field messages, there's no reason Eagle Fist would be the exception.

A truce flag would be easy enough to construct. Various white undergarments could be attached to a stick.

Michael and Tinker are uncomfortable about waiting in the open, and find places to temporarily hide.

Nikolai attempts to cover up tracks, but can't help but shake the feeling that his covering might be every bit as noticeable as his original trail in the sandy beach.

Tinker nods at the plan. Not fighting with arrogance nor sneaking with weakness, but open truce as if by mutual prowess of equals. "Might just work!" He says with a rare smile to Michael. "Let's lead inland"

Tinker takes the lead with Michael, letting the sun and wind dry his clothes. He marches inland towards Alithmar, crossbow ready but not threatening, and jeeping a sharp eye out.

"Keep your long spear, I carry a few 10 foot poles in my efficient quiver. We can either lash them together or just use one, Nikolai's choice." Anna opines.

"I also have some canvas and can use my knowledge of nature to perhaps find a natural bleaching agent so we can leave our undergarments intact." Anna says.

She casts Toros Taur Try on herself and then uses her knowledge of nature and survival skills to hopefully find a natural bleaching agent for her canvas. (Survial: 16; Knowledge[Nature] : 19)

She also keeps an eye out for anything threatening and tries to be as stealthy as someone untrained wearing hide armor can be.

Nikolai locates a tree branch that is straight enough to be used as a pole for flag of truce. A white undergarment is produced and tied to the new pole.

"Anyone has any better ideas had better speak up now," he sighs.

Holding the 'flag of truce' he leads his Fist out into the jumble of rocks. There's no telling where Neutronis' camp is but he has a feeling he won't need to know.

They march through the rocky terrain until they cross something interesting or are intercepted. Interesting things would be a path or road, signs of an army, and so such.

The Agents carry their banner down the road for some time. Following it south, they hear the approaching hoof-beats of horses heading their direction. The familiar voice of the Eagle thumb is calling out orders to maintain a wide search pattern.

He pulls up his horse in a stop when he notices you and your flag, then gathers his men together and rides towards you. Still mounted, they pull up about 100 yards away. He calls out, surprise in his voice.

Several hours later his bAttlemates hear the same sound of incredulous stubbornness when the Eagle Thumb makes the same suggestion. "We evaded you when we wanted, and we'd kill you if we wanted too, but that's not the mission. The mission is to talk to Pavilion, so we're ambassadors."

Tinker doesn't try hard to be diplomatic, but maybe sometimes being blunt works.

The Eagle thumb considers the Agents carefully, his face showing obvious disdain.

"I've had about enough of traitors talking down on me today, or assuming they are diplomatic equals!"

He dismounts and waves and confers with his men for a moment, then returns.

"Alright Nikolai, I'll take you to Pavonis. Maybe if you talk to him first hand you'll see that you have it wrong. Don't expect to keep weapons in hand when you meet him, and don't expect your spell-casters to have access to their magic. During the rest of your time in the camp however, you'll be free to come and go as you please, and maybe the report you issue to the former Knight-Captain Palance will be enough for her to save her head. Try anything, and I'll be all to happy to avenge the lost men in Tiger and turn the fat tongue of your boisterous dwarf into a component for my spells.

It should serve nicely as the focus for a Feeble-mind spell."

The two fists seem on edge, ready to act as their Thumb offers his terms.

"Do you agree to these terms?"

Tinker doesn't say anything, it's Nikolai's call, but this looks about the best opportunity for the group to get in and see the former commander of the Fist. Anna tensely waits, her entangle spell ready to center on the largest cluster of Eagle Fist members. She hopes it doesn't come to a battle as most of her useful spells have been cast and most of her shifts have been used.

Anna is ready to meet with Neutronis if Nikolai gives the say so. She has 2 tricks up her sleeve that will be unaffected by being disarmed and prevented from casting spells. She can still wild shape and use her plant domain ability to turn her fists to wood. Neither one of these abilities can be disrupted by what the Eagles are proposing, so if Nikolai is okay with this she at least will not be completely defenseless.

Nikolai glares at the Thumb. "I do find it interesting that I've quoted from the Mailed Fist manual to prove that we are in the right and in contrast you've only spouted how you are right but can't prove it. Show me where the Mailed Fist manual justifies your actions!" Nikolai answers back, then starts laughing.

"You would be fool enough to try to use dwarf parts as spell components despite the fact that dwarfs are highly resistant to magic and whatever spell you cast using dwarf parts would most likely fail or backfire."

He turns to his Fist and looks them over for any sign that they might give that what the Eagle Thumb proposes is not a good bargain. He thinks he sees that they all agree that this is the best they are going to get.

He turns back to face the Eagle Thumb and answers him, "I agree to be truthful to our mission to talk to Neutronis on behalf of Commander Constance. As far as not having any weapons on hand when we do, if he is that afraid of us, then we meet in the open and talk in the open. We keep our weapons and give our word we will not raise weapon or magic against him unless you or any other present proves traitorous. A man of his stature and power surely can trust that he can smack us silly if we try anything foolish. So lead on and we'll follow."

He gives his Fist a glance. He expects that they all will keep sharp and on their toes. He trusts this Thumb only as far as he can throw an ogre.

"By the way. While we travel, It would be helpful if you could show us in the Mailed Fist manual how you have come to the conclusion that we have it so wrong. To have such strong opinion against us and hold us in such disdain and contempt, I have to assume you've studied the manual and know what chapter and page we need to look over again to see the light such as you have."

Nikolai has the suspicion that perhaps the Thumb is under some enchantment magic. If the Thumb can justify his belief in Neutronis by some form of twisted logic from the manual, that would be one thing, but if he refuses to even engage in a discussion of Mailed Fist policy from the manual and simply continue to state that they are in the wrong, then perhaps he's been charmed. Problem is, Nikolai does not think any of his Fist can detect such enchantment. Detecting Magic might work but most likely would be inconclusive.

For now, at least, he waits and watches, following the Eagle Fist to Neutronis' headquarters.

Action: letting the Eagle Fist take the lead, he follows, still holding their Truce Flag, always attentive to any traitorous actions:

"It doesn't seem you'll agree to anything further. We can cross the bridge of your weapons later, for now, we need to get moving. You've got the word of the Eagle, no hostility unless you provoke it out of us."

The trip back towards the camp takes the majority of the day. Captain Konrad had mentioned that you would be about a day north of Neutronis and his encampment, and he was generally correct. After night-fall, the Eagle Thumb calls a halt and begins to set up a camp.

"I'm sure you'll post your own guards Nikolai, but I gave you our word regarding your safety. We are at war here, so we aren't going to travel in the night. Come morning, I'll take you the rest of the way in."

He begins giving standard orders, setting perimeters and making sure that everyone has food and water and bedding available.

"We didn't expect to be bringing you back with us alive, so we didn't pack any extra bed-rolls. You can hot-swap beds with the guards if you like. It should be enough to make sure we all get a decent nights sleep, as best as we can expect."

In regards to Nikolai's request for specific points in the Fist Charter, he scoffs.

"War isn't bureaucracy Nikolai. It is admirable that Constance Palance has instilled such reverence for our bylaws within her men, but don't forget the core of the Fist and who we are. Mercenaries, Agent. Mercenaries one and all. Men who are willing to fight and die and kill for coin are also men who will be quick to leave that life behind for something better. The charter is an old document, written by founding fathers who may or may not have understood just how large we would get. They couldn't have forseen the stresses of running such a large group."

He sighs.

"It's no lie that the Grand Marshall is exploiting a situation for his gain. It's also no lie that 3/5ths of the Fist have decided to back their leader, in spite of a weathered document that tells him he should remain politically neutral."

Shrugging, he stuffs a mouthfull of field rations in his mouth.

"I suppose we are thankful that Neutronis has given us a chance for something more of a purpose than living pay purse to pay purse. For many of us, this is an ill-fated long-shot, a roll of the dice that we are willing to make. Did you know that the Free-States are amassing an army? Same thing with the Aisuldurian Empire. Hell, even the Pirates of Jack are threatening to blockade our to-be Kingdom."

Taking a drink from his waterskin, he continues.

"But Pavonis is a military genius. He's also a skilled negotiator. I can promise you none of those armies want to be the first to take on the amassed regiments of all the Fist. That's exactly why so many of your recent opponents see Swain and Palance as such a vile traitor, because they know deep down that we probably can't win unless we are at full strength."

He shrugs.

"Funny thing. There actually is no limit on methods to reclaim payment from someone who does not. There are tactics traditionally used, but no limits inherent to the system. This probably was an oversight, but the Grand Marshall is willing to use it I think, to build his lasting legacy."

He stretches and strips off his breastplate, throwing hit on the ground near him.

"I'm Color Sergeant Akir. These men here will let no harm come to you. They are also your best chance at surviving. You aren't the only squad of Agents in Alithmar, Wolves. If something happens to us while we sleep, I'd hate to think of the corner of this Wold you'd have to hide in to escape our Knight Captains wrath. Any thing else before I get to bed?"

Nikolai formally introduces himself. "I'm Nikolai Komonov. My father is in the Fist, my grandfather was in the Fist, and my great grandfather as well. So I know the charter front to back and sideways. The charter is NOT too small for the size of the Fist. Those who wrote it knew what they were doing. They knew that one day someone would want to take Power and conquer and not be content to be merely a mercenary. They knew that it would not work and would ruin the Fist. Like you said, the kingdoms all around are marshaling their forces against Neutronis. But that isn't all of his worries either. He can't possibly win over the hearts of the people he conquers. Without that, rebel groups will spring up here and there and you will be spending all of your time just keeping the people quiet.

Then, if you do actually hold out, where will your income come from? No one will hire you out and no one will want to trade with you. There are plenty of other mercenary groups that will gladly slip into the vacuum you create

Neutronis would have been better off resigning from the Fist and tried it without the Fist name. Instead, he created a civil war within the Fist and he's ruined the Mailed Fist reputation, probably beyond repair.

I don't envy your choice at all. You've already cast your dice with him and if you did see the folly in this, you probably wouldn't be able to leave with your life. Those who are in the wrong must use violence to maintain their position. That's the difference between the two commanders we follow."

Nikolai shows that they all have their own camping equipment and bedrolls.
"We both keep watch. For your sake and ours. You gave your word, but it may mean nothing to others out there, like the Wolves of Neutronis."

NIkolai has his Fist help in getting camp set up and details a watch in their usual manner. He encourages Anna to get rest instead of shifting but if she wishes to do so on her watch, that's fine. The Eagle was right about one thing, they were certainly going to keep their own watch! Tinker takes his usual middle-of-the-night watch to best utilize his dark sight.

He's right about another as well, thinks Tinker, this is probably the last best chance to achieve their mission alive. So these Eagles will help them get to the objective. The dwarf tries to think about the situation like a puzzle or a lock, and tries to think what tumbler needs to move to align right...

He ponders Akir's words during dinner. They do not meet with the training that he got at the citadel, this 'grab what you can when you can' mentality. A thought occurs to the dwarf and, though tacit by nature, he attempts to strike up a conversation with the Eagle on watch.

"Nice night, isn't it?"
"Reminds me of doing night training as a recruit, those night maneuvers with drill sergeants waiting in the woods..."
"Took me three years training at the Citadel, how about you?"

(Tinker is wondering if the different mentality and the recent heavy recruitment of the Fist means that many of the newer Fist were not trained to standard at the Citadel)

The non-lethal bruising heals overnight, along with some regular rest healing. Tinker is feeling mostly back up to snuff.

Saturday November 28th, 2015 2:31:21 PM

In the morning, Akir is more chatty, and less cautious. He seems generally surprised at Tinkers comment.

"Eagle Regiment trains at the Eyrie. Not every Fist member goes through the Citadel anymore. Most of the other Citadels have a four to six week basic training. I had no idea you went through such a long induction."

For Trayvin, he nods.

"Neutronis knows people fairly well. It's possible his prior relationship with Merina Swain and Constance Palance led him to believe such a meeting would be fruitless. Or it's possible they did meet magically somehow. I do know Merina did not give the outright official stance that Constance did, we didn't know her motivations until we heard of Snake Regiment countering our operations to find you."

He considers Nikolai's arguments for a while, then shakes his head.

"I suppose that for me, it's trust that Neutronis has a plan and knows what he is doing. And I don't imagine he has any ideas about giving up mercenary work. He can draw income through taxation. Alithmar is still also the closest port this side of the bay of Elenna, trade will happen unless the Pirates of Jack blockade it, but I imagine they wouldn't punish merchants who are seeking to continue their lifestyle."

He locks eyes with the thumb and smiles.

"You're right though, the choice wasn't easy. Eagle Regiment has locked up it's own detractors for now, humanely, and without pain other than inconvenience. They will be discharged when this is over. The Sons of Pavillion are a messy bunch. They operate of their own volition, however much they may be encouraged by Neutronis, he did not set them up on his own."

DM Ken - Post for Michael
Saturday November 28th, 2015 2:32:43 PM

Michael isn't sure how he feels about all the political discussion. Fairly certain he didn't have to buy anyone a ticket to stabby-town today, he sheathes his second dagger and tags along quietly.

Prudence Gundle
Saturday November 28th, 2015 2:44:26 PM

Pru introduces herself as Lance Corporal Prudence Gundle, but is otherwise uncharacteristically quiet. She takes a watch if instructed, and spends the rest of the time watching those around her and whispering prayers to the various gods. She looks very unhappy.

AC 27 T17 F17 CMD 27 (31 Bull Rush or Trip); HP 29/45 "Tinker" (SteveK)
Saturday November 28th, 2015 6:52:58 PM

Tinker looks for a time to find the Agents with no Eagle's about and relays the news he got the night before. That training has decreased quality for quantity, and that there are people of every regiment that disagree. "They're locked up, but could be an asset to Captain Palance if we could get them out through negotiation"

Anna Morphe (Hugh C) -- AC 17/13/14 - HP 48/48 -- CMD 16  d20+12=26 ; d20+13=19 ; 2d4=4 ; d20+11=24 ;

Anna changes her spell list to be more in line with life on land.

She uses her survival and nature knowledge to hopefully find some berries and if she finds them casts good berry giving her 4 goodbeerries.
(Survival : 26)
(Know [Nature]: 19)

Anna says, "I wish we wouldn't have spent all that coin on clothes and jewelry if our charade was thwarted before we really began. Unless we manage to dissuade Neutronis from this course of action and they throw us a fete to celebrate, but i would have preferred the other dress I was talked out of for that. "

When they go to leave she keeps her eyes peeled for any threat while on the trail. (Perception: 24)
