South of the Road

Korbiss holds up a hand to Atlas' offer. "Oh the cache is not ours. Not in the sense that we put it there. A deal some time ago we were paid with the map and location. It's all on the level and such, no worries on that."
Durbin adds, "We'd like you to have the map, take the cache, but first how about we get back to the Tree. Cache is not going anywhere and from the looks of your hussle out here, you don't look ready for a 100 or so mile walk and a day or two of digging."

The group divides up the potions found Make sure to put them on your sheets all

Atlas stows the map and case in his pack.

Osul tells what he knows of the Culverwood. At the heart of the Elennian Peninsula is one of the seven magical forests of Yrth: the Culverwood. Many say this area is the single most dangerous location on the peninsula. It is home to isolationist Elves, Drow, and magical creatures of all kinds. This wood tends to capture travelers by magically altering the landscape to appear that it goes on forever. The unwary traveler will usually disappear never to be seen again (or see again for that matter.) But those who honor the Culverwood and treat it with love and respect can find it to be the most beautiful and wonderful places in the Wold. But the forest has ever been tricky and willful, and even its most devoted followers never know exactly where its trails will take them. It is more chaotic than good, but good and evil dwell under its eaves.

There is an old poem telling of the Culverwood -- none can agree on the exact words, but it says the forest can feel, and act, that the routes through it seem to change, that some folks wander for days only to end up where they started without ever getting where they wanted to go, and some folk who enter never come out!

"Yep, sounds about right." Durbin adds. "Also supposed to be a Monster Preserve. That's a phrase i have heard associated with it, but to be honest I'm not sure precisely what that means."

The group begins heading towards home, The Tree of Parting

South of the Road
Monday November 23rd, 2015 10:10:00 PM

The group heads home for the Tree. The journey will take a couple days at the more relaxed pace this group is now on. The general conversation is about the mysterious Culverwood. The dwarfs both shrug at Osul's comment on the monster preserve. "What we've heard. Probably some tree kissing Druid group trying to do something to save some unicorns or some such."
Durbin gives Korbiss a chuck in the shoulder, "you just saved by one of them you know. Might want to be a bit less of elf in your thanking of him."
Korbiss growls back but offers an apology to Osul

The journey back to the Tree though is interrupted, or rather a side journey is taken. During the first night, talk around the fire turns to the party's journey out from the Tree and the discovery of the wagon. Durbin and Korbiss want to return to the attack to bring those killed to the Tree so that they may be properly buried.

"Apology accepted, but I demand a simple forfeit to amends. You have traveled far and experienced much, so please tell what you know - fact, rumor or fiction - of we Druids? It is fair - you already brought up the subject." 'Osul smiles again - the moment turned, and asking the dwarves to speak in payment he thinks was a nice touch. He listens intently to them both.

During his watch he takes some minutes at (or recalling) the wagon. The harness still bound around the fallen horse(s). For a moment he feels muscles - his, but not - straining against the weight of the wagon on an incline. Then just as quickly is fades to nothing and he feels empty, or at least only half full, and it leaves him edgy for the rest of his watch. {Perception: 28}

"Returning to the wagon to properly bury the dead does make sense. I feel like an idiot for not even thinking of something like that sooner." I truly do. If given an opportunity to broach the topic lightly, I ask Durbin and/or Korbiss if they knew any of their fellow travelers well, and express my sorrow at their loss. It wasn't that long ago we were in charge of keeping the wagon safe, and I can only imagine how they might feel right now.

The Attack Site
Wednesday November 25th, 2015 11:19:12 AM

Osul asks for some information in payment of the slight. This produces another shoulder jab into Korbiss form Durbin and laughs "Boy has you by the beard now you mouthy woman."
Korbiss takes the insult, something he's certainly not done beofre and spits to the ground, "Blast, fair enough." he grumbles.

Korbiss talks at length to Osul about the varying stories he has heard and on a few personal accounts that he has had with druids. "The Culverwood has several tight groups of druids, some good, some not so much. Just as well feed you to some wildlife than shake your hand. None of them have I ever encountered. I keep my stocky self quite well away from the wood proper."
Korbiss has heard of druids having some rather fantastical powers and has witnessed one of them. "The druids I have met have both had a couple things in common. Both of them could become animals of the wild. Wolf, Deer, Falcon, stuff like that and they both traveled with one. The first I met called himself Thistle and walked about with a 7' snake draped about him. The other was a much more pleasant fellow by the name of Pharis Dob. He kept a leopard sauntering about with him, well it looked like a leopard, but it was about the biggest one I've ever seen. More like a lion."

Conversation about the fire and those that traveled with the dwarfs comes up. Neither really wishes to speak on it and only stare into the flames silently when the topic of how well they might have known the others. Their unmoving, silence screaming volumes into the crackling flames.
The group spends the night and during Carver's watch, Osul is replaced for about 10 minutes by a horse in his bedroll.

The following afternoon the party arrives at the scene of the orc attack. The murder of crows take flight as the party approaches, cawing loudly as they retreat to a safer distance.

'Osul hears out the Dwarves. {Note to self: Korbiss is a woman! Would not have picked it. Still don't believe it. Still thinking they are brothers or business partners or maybe both. Still, thinking back to my family and neighbors, and that it is probably not the done thing to point it out, if I believed it...}

"The Wood is a huge place, so I probably shouldn't be surprised that there are other Druids (other groups of Druids) in The Wood. But, I've never ever seen even one."
"As for becoming Animals of the Wild - I remember stories as a kid of people who could change into animals and vice versa - wolf cubs who could shed their pelts to become human children, as one example, but again, I've not seen one to know it for what it is. Forgive my skepticism on this point."

'Osul looks about - no animal accompanying him. He seriously begins to wonder if what he is is a Druid at all. Does it need... do I need a different word? Maybe accompanying animal come later? Accompanying animals!? What is this 'Osul - The Musicians of Bremen?
"Seven foot long snake I understand, but I'm stretching my memory to think that leopards and lions are large cats?"

+-+-+-+ The night passes uneventfully! +-+-+-+

'Osul completes his meditations. Today the focus is a particularly interesting fallen green leaf he found near his bedding this morning. Yesterday, it was a wing feather of a Blackbird. When his meandering meditation on this leaf, leaves in general, and their party in the broader organism that is the tree or bush, and they as a part of the broader organism which is The Wood, is complete, he places the leaf with the feather in his backpack.

"I've remembered something, and it might help explain every... a lot... some of this. We had been talking about getting the wagon back to The Tree, and how you weren't, I think you said, "a draft animal". Well, I had been thinking how great it would be if we found a horse that was willing to help. Then during the night I thought or dreamed of the fallen horse at the wagon, and what it might have felt like to pull a laden wagon up and down over hill and dale. I wonder if they are connected? Atlas overhears the conversation about 'Osul and being a horse..."Well, that would have solved our problem. I mean, if 'Osul could turn into a horse then I'm sure he'd be willing to help us get the wagon to the Tree. No offense Carver, but 'Osul hasn't spent the majority of his life having to deflect people trying to use him like a horse, so he's likely not as opposed to being put to work like that. I completely understand your hesitation though. 'Osul, what do you think? Any special horse magic you have up your sleeve? Would you be willing to pull the wagon? I'll walk, no need to pull us living folk. Try it...just concentrate REALLY hard. Picture yourself as a horse." The Attack Site
Monday November 30th, 2015 9:45:56 PM

Mack has little success communicating with the crows. He can deduce they are hungry and are perfectly willing to wait until the party leaves to get back to it.
Owen has heard of magic and particularly Druidic magic that allows people to take the shape of animals and more. Spontaneously while sleeping is a new wrinkle, but didn't really sound too far fetched to learned man.
Atlas wonders at how they might get the wagon of bodies back and if burying them here might be acceptable.
Osul works on coming to grips with his apparent change in the night. Might he be able to control it and perform such a feat again?
Atlas also tries to work with Osul to repeat his shift from last night

Korbiss and Durbin do not want to try and bury the dead out here on the road, "without the right tools, they'll be too close to the surface and dug up by wild animals. "
Both of the dwarfs volunteer to pull the wagon. Party has plenty of rope and the wagons were in relatively good shape still. Only one would be required and upon the road, it would be a hard 7 miles, but impossible.

Stubborn dwarfs are not to be trifled with and so the party begins the last few miles. The attack site itself was just as the group had left it. It will take a good day to pull the wagon home...

After a little travel, the party notices a lone figure approaching them from the direction of the Tree of Parting, still some miles away. As he nears they note that he wears a prominently displayed silver symbol of Gargul around his neck. A chain shirt can be seen under his dark cloak and he holds a glaive. Though young his long face and eagle nose give him a drawn look. Long black hair hangs down his back and shoulders.

He looks warily at the group pulling the wagon and notes the flies and smells coming from the wagon as well.

"Greetings," he pauses "has there been some trouble here?" He shifts his stance to a more defensive posture. "I ask because it is quite obvious your cargo is quite strange."

He looks around and gives a nod to the centaur bearing the sign of Gargul on the shoulder of his armor. "I was recently talking to Liliput Muffinbubble when I felt a calling from Gargul in this direction. My name is Armand, what might yours be?"

He looks about somewhat warily. Armand is worried that he may have stepped into a group of grave robbers or murders taking a cargo to a mad wizard bent on creating undead minions. Much like the stories he heard back in Waypoint in the Emerald Kingdom.

Wagon Hauling

Osul successfully transforms into a horse and between himself and Carver, the wagon is not difficult at all. Korbiss and Durbin still line up behind it and lend assistance by pushing.
The dwarfs did indeed know the names of all the slain and are thankful to Carver for his care in knowing them as the bodies were loaded.

The group makes about 3 miles when the figure on the road ahead nears. He introduces himself as Armand, cleric of Gargul. Pleasantries are exchanged, but the lone traveler is rightfully a bit wary of the group intention and purpose.

Durbin and Korbiss leave the discussion to the group and specifically look to Carver, a fellow devotee of Gargul, and Atlas and Mack, whom they have known the longest.

"Hey Armand! I'm Mack. I'm NOT a wizard... and I'm not so sure about the mad part yet." I say with a slight smile on my face. I cautiously check the surrounding area. It seems odd to see a lone traveler out here, and wonder if others will jump out of the bushes at any moment.

“If one of these dwarves were a clan chief or person of renown we would have to build a stone crypt and marker. But as this does not seem to be the case, we must ensure they are buried in the earth with stone in their hands. I guess the best place to do that would be back near the tree.”

Armand stops to take off is backpack and untie a loose sack. He shoulders the pack and begins to help push the cart. "Hi there Armand, my name is Atlas. Atlas Sunowl. Your god has sent you on a good mission, as we could certainly use the help in caring for these lost souls. However, beware the horse. His name is 'Osul and he can sometimes bite." Atlas laughs at his own joke, but continues before it becomes weird. "Actually, 'Osul is a druid and he has taken this form to help us get the wagon back to the Tree more efficiently. It's his first transformation that I am aware of, so I'm personally hoping that he knows how to get back to human shape." Atlas heads back to the wagon to start pushing again and on his way he pats 'Osul on the back in a friendly way to let him know he's appreciated.

"Armand, the first round and dinner are on me when we get back to the Tree. I'll buy a second round if you'd be so kind as to share your story with us over that dinner."

Wagon Hauling
Wednesday December 2nd, 2015 10:31:00 PM

The group, now plus one, arrive back at the Tree I the early evening. The lifts are still down and a couple folks are hanging about at the bottom. The party recognizes some of them, Dungarth, Liliput, and Boolia, who look to be waiting for the party. With them is a halfling with a wolf and another pair of humans. Dungarth and Boolia start moving to you with a wave. "Saw you and what was going on, came down to lend a hand."

Lilyput, cleric of Alemi, walks quickly out to you. "So this was the call you heard Armand." She looks to the party, "and good to see you again."

The group at the tree has tools and Liliput has a location to inter the dead.

He paces to one side of the group - a part of this was a promise made to himself and spoken aloud to others. Free of the trappings of his work, he looks at the wide open plain and hears himself.
"I am not slighted - a horse is a noble creature. To run like a horse would... be... "

And with that he transitions from a walk to a trot, a trot to a canter, and a canter to a gallop, and a mile or more passes before he eases pace to make a wide turn to head back towards his friends and The Tree.

When he returns, he tries to work out how (or if) to return to his previous one human self.

That evening he joins the group at the table. And shares his story…

” I grew up in the town of Waypoint in the Emerald Kingdom. My father was a trashman, and my mother died when I was 2 years old. My parents were ‘old’ when he was born. I am the youngest of my father's children, I have two sisters that I’ve never seen as they had already left the household when I was born.” He takes a sip of his drink and continues.

“As I said, my father was the trashman of Waypoint. It was his job every morning to rise and clean the streets of trash and whatever else was dumped there in the night. This often led to trips to the cemetery. Not that those bodies ever had anything of interest on them anymore, having already been looted by someone. I had to help dad. Not that I wanted to but I had to, because dad was past his prime. It was not a respected job and few children my age would have anything do with me.” he pauses and drinks some more. ”I can’t blame them, it was not a nice job, between shoveling up the streets, burning trash and burying bodies…” He drinks some more.

”It seems though that my father had a past, because he taught me how to use a glaive. In fact this glaive was once dad’s. It seems though that some adventures eventually run out of money and have to take whatever job is available.” He looks up. ”Seems this glass is empty.”

”There was a priest of Gargul at the local cemetery who was a friend of Dad’s. I think they may have been in a group sometimes in the past. The priest, Sherman Taudour, would often talk to me, and it was Sherman that taught me to read and write. When dad died the town expected me to take over and keep doing the job. However, I chose instead to join with Sherman Taudour and learn the ways of Gargul.”

It was then that we heard of a wandering band of Orcs that had attacked Kouri. I joined with the militia in pursuit of the orcs. Not much to it, we chased them, fought them, chased them some more, fought them some more. It was a bit of trek.”

”Now I’ve decided to see the wider world. Gargul seems to have been pulling me in this direction.”

He wears leather armor and dresses in woodland colors, a lean and dark colored wolf with a saddle sits at his side. As the halfling watches the gathering before him he muses, They should call this place the Tree of Gathering.

He continues to observe the gathering as some of the others go off to dig graves for the dwarves, That looks too much like work, but decides to lend a hand anyway as he would want the same courtesy if someone found his carcass on the side of the road someday. He looks at his wolf and scratches her head as he continues the line of thought, or perhaps Shadow here will get an extra portion and keep my bones to remember me by.

At some point, either while digging or later that evening over drinks or dinner, he will share a little about himself. Halloo! As he points his thumb at his chest, I'm Bendoc Brookburrow but you all can call me Ben. I spent most of my days traveling hither and tither protecting and acting as a scout for caravans and the like." Alt+0151 might display as an em dash when being typed or pasted in, but once it is parsed and formatted into a final post it looks horrible - as someone who once tried to include the characters for suits in playing cards - just say "No." And, on a separate topic, I borrowed my sheet from a source that said I could, and then I tried automating some things, like XP determining level, and level automatically determining BAB, Base Saves, Spells per Level, expected Attribute Increases etc. You (and anyone else) are welcome to use it without the acknowledgements like: "This character sheet template was flagrantly stolen from Graham Dolby, who plays the Wold character 'Osul." Treetops Tavern and new friends
Friday December 4th, 2015 9:37:06 AM

Dungarth, Boolia and the others all came down to assist the group with interning the dead. They stand by at the ceremony that Liliput leads. Near what Armand and Owen know to be the end of the Alemi burial of the dead ceremony, Liliput stops and steps aside. The halfling caretaker and cleric of Alemi bows reverently to Armand, "The ceremony and final blessing are yours to complete lord Gargul, keeper of the dead, giver of life." This is something neither Armand or Owen has heard of before....

The ceremony concludes and the group breaks up with the intention of meeting in Treetops for dinner after cleaning up. A comment from Atlas about the party's current state elicits a chuckle from Dungarth and a reply from Boolia, "Oh Atlas, yes it is." She smiles and gives the human a firm pat to the shoulder as all board the lift and rise up over 200' into the Tree and the departure platform.

Bendoc, Leskni, and Armand all have rooms already in Treetops, having been here for a couple days, to clean up in.
Cameron's critters are collected by Liliput, "to be either released at a comfortable distance, or returned to another suitable habitat by one of the merchant caravans."

Soon enough a party has begun in Treetops Tavern. Korbiss and Durbin have thrown in to host a wake/celebration of life for those who have departed and those still here. Nearly every resident of the Tree of Parting is in attendance.

Stories are swapped and shared, Armand, cleric of Gargul and the story of his youth in Waystation with his father.
Leskni, the liontaur and her journeys across the land to the Tree, prejudice and fear, her most often experienced greeting. The Tree of Parting will be different she hoped and thus far is certainly has been.
Bendoc, a halfling that travels with a wolf, up and down the Great East West road. Deciding the excitement and opportunities for heroic deeds to be limited as a wagon train scout, he is here looking to build the unbeatable bonds of friendship forged through daring deed and adventure

IC: After most of the stories have concluded over dinner, Owen calls everyone together. "While everyone freshened up before dinner I took some time to study a new spell. I hope you enjoy it..." With that, he begins speaking magic words and rotating a small piece of fabric in the center of the table. He knits his brow in deep concentration and a Minor Image springs to life above the group:
The party appears, moving swiftly through the dark. They are breathing hard, and their fatigue is apparent. They cross the room at a good clip and disappear into the opposite wall, replaced by a trudging band of orcs dragging Korbiss and Durbin away. An arrow-shape appears to be carved into the wood of the table where Owen sits. As the orcs exit, Carver passes through the far wall, followed by Cameron, Atlas, and the rest of the party. They happen upon the arrow and immediately start pointing in different directions: some along the trail, some following the arrow. The illusory party follows the trail, starkly lit by a spell.

The orcs and dwarves sit around idly, rolling their eyes as the bright, moving beacon draws nearer. The orcs set up an ambush, firing arrows into the group's ranks. Most of the illusory party charges, though Mack sneaks forward and Owen disappears. As the melee fighters meet, the clash of swords and axes on armor rings out through the Treetop. Arrow volleys and powerful strikes from the orcs severely injure the front line, and when Cameron runs behind the orcs to heal the allies, Korbiss, and Durbin he is laid out by a ferocious chop, the sword sinking sickeningly into his spine. 'Osul's fiery sphere rumbles around the room, and Owen reappears with a jarring burst of light. Many of the orcs in close combat are stunned, and everyone pitches in to the fight (even the wizard!).

'Osul runs to help Cameron, sprinting up the steep terrain on the way. Carver dispatches several orcs and Owen drops the archers with a Sleep spell. Mack squares off with the orc leader while a loud 'thump' sounds out across the battle: Atlas striking a strong blow against a wooden shield. The two orcs guarding the dwarves hurry into battle with a shout.

The illusory Cameron continues to puddle into the ground (and across the real Treetop table) until Mack and 'Osul arrive to heal him. He releases an audible sigh, then rises as Carver and Mack down a few more orcs. The party captures the remainder, though several run off into the darkness.

The group takes a few minutes to breathe, during which Atlas and Cameron grow quite agitated. Rising tempers yield unidentifiable yelling until the dwarves intervene. Cameron ultimately wanders north with the orc captives, channeling one last burst of healing that fills the Inn with light and fades slowly with the rest of the illusion.
Owen breathes out slowly after the spell ends. It's the longest and most complex spell he has yet cast; drained, he draws his navy cloak tighter about himself.

If you later capture a marked orc then you really have no choice but to kill them at that point. While everybody should be given a second chance, you can't give people third or fourth chances"

Atlas enjoys the evening and stories, taking time to share his stories and background as he sees fit. When Owen performs his feat of magic, he turns red and shakes his head. "Not one of my finest moments. Thank you Owen for ending it right then so that it is fresh in everyone's memory." While he is red with embarrassment, he is also smiling. It is clear that this is just a situation where friends are bantering and having fun.

At the appropriate time Atlas speaks up enough for those at this table to hear, but not loud enough to make it something for the entire tavern. "Well friends, after listening to this night's activities, it seems like we have some prospects here that could help The Tree and our cause. While I know that tonight is a night of celebration for the dead, it is also a night of opportunity to make their deaths mean something. Does anyone object to us discussing a little business?"

Treetops Tavern and new friends
Monday December 7th, 2015 9:32:31 AM

The group gets down to discuss some business. What to do next and so on.
Treetops has quieted considerably and it is now well past dinner and the official celebration and wake is ended. Korbiss and Durbin are still here, as is Boolia, but the rest of the patrons have retired to their quarters or their rooms. Sarah, the barmaid is still here as is the seemingly ever present Cyridrial, the proprietor of Treetops

Atlas settles in for the discussion, "Hopefully in the future our endeavors will allow us to celebrate success, rather than death. Along those lines, it does appear that we could use some help and we have 3 folks among us who seem to be wanting to help in this department. I'll admit, I don't trust people after just one good night of drinking, but I'm inclined to believe that you three mean well. If the rest of the group is comfortable with it, then I would welcome you into the fold on our next adventure...which is going to be our second topic of discussion tonight. However, first things first. What do the rest of you think? And what about you three...any questions or things to say? I'm assuming you mean to join us, otherwise this is an awkward conversation." Atlas sits back and has a drink while he listens to the responses.

"I would most definitely be both honoured and pleased to join you, so long as what you intend to do is a good and honourable deed.

Perhaps I should point out what I bring to the party. I am something of a mixed bag. I tend to help support the group and make it stronger rather than dealing much damage on my own. In fact, I strongly prefer to not kill if that can be helped. my weapons of choice are non lethal things such as this net or bola.

My main contribution will be with spells. Some quite useful spells I can do as often as I require. For example , when it is convenient for me or my companions to be smaller or larger I can manage that "

As long as you have not passed to Gargul's care, my healing is at your disposal. I'm fairly handy with my glaive, but I've found it more useful to be behind the front lines, where my reach can do the most good. But as to questions, I've none. I'm not sure what your options are. Do you wish to go after those Orcs, or has some new quest come up?"

Ben enjoys the evening with his new found companions. As he socializes he considers the invitation to adventure with this group, this is exactly why I came to the tree, but do I want to jump in with the first group I come across? After internalizing for a while he looks to his wolf and sees her relaxed and slowly wagging her tail, well it looks as if she’s made up her mind about this group.
Finally he speaks up, “I’m in if ye all will have me.” With a broad smile he adds, “I’m good in a scrape, though I prefer to use a sling at range I don’t mind getting up close and personal so to speak.” He continues with self-assurance, “I’m also a fair scout and have skill at woodcraft.”
He spends the rest of the evening making small talk until Mac starts talking about a map, Ben loves maps and cant contain himself, “Did you say something about a map? Do you mind if I take a peek.” He is so focused on the map that he fails to hear anything about a painting.

The Painting of Deeproot and the treasure map
Tuesday December 8th, 2015 9:25:39 AM

Bendoc, Armand, and Leskni are all officially invited to join the adventuring troop and accept. The Painting of Deeproot the party received from a fey creature calling himself Peevish in a weird pocket dimension like place is brought up, and there is the map to a dwarf cache. The painting currently resides in the shrine of Alemi. It is a magical painting and Peevish said that it might 'stir Deeproot if put in the right place'. So far there has been no sign of this 'stirring' during its week long stay in the shrine.

The map is fairly straight forward, showing a small tight winding wash gully that leads to a natural granite spire. Written, in dwarf, the map indicates where to remove certain stones to get to the cache. The party already knows the wash gully is about a day and half west and north of the Tree, because Korbiss and Durbin who gave them the map had said so. What makes the map interesting is there are no compass direction or scale or any marks to indicate where in a larger scale the cache may be. Without the verbal direction of Korbiss and Durbin, whom you have no cause or reason to not trust, this could be nearly anywhere in the Wold.

The painting, being at the Tree, is a simple enough thing to look into first and the following morning the group can do just that. The Painting appears no different. It hangs where it was placed within the Alemi shrine.

Durbin and Korbiss plan to take a few more days, perhaps a week to rest and set themselves for a trip to Edenmoor. There they will stock up, reset themselves with another run and continue their lives.

And do you think causing the Tree to move is a good thing? Lots of travellers expect it to be right here.

Has anybody tried magic to see if the Tree does think? I wouldn't use it without the permission of Folbre but I have magic that may let me read the surface of its mind"

I'd love to say hi to the new Wolf in our party as well, but he seemed like he was getting a lot of attention. I don't want to overburden him right away with new people. When it seems like a good time to do so, I go say Hi.... bringing an appropriate treat for him. :)

There is much that he does not understand about the world, which is why he left home. He finishes his drink. Then he will bid everyone good night and sleep.

Armand wakes before dawn to pray and ask for guidance from Gargul.

"As for that painting, there's still a puzzle to solve there and leaving it in the chapel is likely not going to get it solved for us. We'll tackle that one when we get back."

Turning to the dwarfs, 'Osul, and Bendoc, "Korbiss, Durbin, could you two go over the map and how we get to the location of this map one more time with 'Osul and Bendoc here. I want to make sure we're not missing any important pieces. Especially considering that we don't have a map to get to the location where this map represents."

Having had enough to drink for the night, Carver stashes his stein in one of his backpacks.

He will examine the map trying to remember as many details as he can he is truly surprised that there is no orientation or scale to the map. A good way to keep something hidden, he concludes

When Own suggests moving the painting he asks, "Why do you want to see the tree move?"

On top of the great scholarly interest in whatever 'stirring' Deeproot might mean..." Owen glances away, taking a deep breath. "Years ago I used to tell my son the story of the great moving Tree, and its various adventures. I know that he would want us to pursue these secrets." With that, Owen looks into his lap. Clearly his thoughts are far away at the moment.

The following morning he takes some time in a space with a view in which to mediate upon his new found boon. If it were possible to reverently high-five the spirit of The Wood which one honors above all else whilst maintaining an otherwise externally undisturbed meditation, then this would be what happened. Of course it opens more questions to meditate upon: Can I do it again? Am I a horse-man, or is this just the first step on a longer journey? What does this mean for my role in the Wold, in The Wood, and amongst my friends?"

Back up in The Tree he takes a walk amongst the casual and permanent vendors seeking the wisdom of another, more senior druid, or failing that, a reputable seller of magical items. If the latter is the case then he will happily have company.

Would you object if I were to try some spells on the tree? Nothing harmful, I assure you. Detect Thoughts and Call spirit. Very quietly he begins to pray. "Lord Gargul all souls and spirits are yours once they have died on this plane. But there is still life in this tree. Can a spirit depart it's shell and the shell still survive? I am not yet wise enough to know your will so I ask for guidance. Durbin and Korbiss confirm with the party again using a larger map of the area on the wall in Treetops Tavern. "Whole point of many dwarf maps like this. Unless you have the starting point, map is no good to you." They decline any accompaniment. "You boys have done enough."

Owen looks over the painting, there are no indications that would reveal an actual location. A brief discussion on if anyone has ever tried to communicate with the tree, yes. "Many times" Ciyradyl Ilyndrathyl says quietly from across the room. The elven woman glides, it would seem, rather than walks across the room to you. "Druids, learned scholars, rangers, Defenders of the Awakened and many more. They come from all over to study and simply sometimes to be with Deeproot. Does he ever return their inquisitions? I do not know, but non e have ever spoken to make me believe Deeproot has." Sh smiles as when then turns and moves back across the room, "You are welcome to try anytime."

The group buys a few things for the 2 day out and back, rations, perhaps some cheese, shovels a couple picks and such and it off.

The trip goes very well and soon the party is back at the Tree of Parting. The Cache was a strongbox, 24" wide, 18" deep and 36" long, made of hickory and bound with steel. The party found it 3' down. It bore no lock and contained 100 gold bricks.
