"We've very little food, you know," Evaris tells the kitten. "We just moved in. You mustn't mind Roel; we had some rather exciting kitten-wrangling adventures back in Plateau City, and he bore the brunt of it. Let's see if we can find you something."
He strolls toward the kitchen, package in hand, and looks to see if the kitten follows him.

Barratore smiles, "I think I just found my new favorite place." Barratore drops a couple silver on the counter, "A box of fine cigars as well." he adds to the barkeep.
Barratore lights up, hands one to Brom and Edson and scoops up the ale with a big grin. "I'm thinking we head up." and he gestures towards the upper floors. Barratore does not lead, but will trail in after Brom and Edson. The minotaur looks about to take in the scene as they move about.
Now that he has a drink and stogie, he's much more relaxed and observant.

At the speakeasy, the group gets drinks and cigars and decides to head up the stairs. They get up one floor to the middle level, but find some well armed burly men preventing any further ascent. The middle level has booths against the back wall, and a railing that doubles as a drink rest over looking the lower floor. The smoky haze pretty much hangs about 2/3 the way up past this floor and looking down it only gets thicker. Near the end is a open booth, it'll be a tight fit due to the size of some, but it currently has no one seated in it.
Lanliss asks the lad his question, "Oh, I had an escort up to the Gold Level. Wait a moment..." He looks down at the coins in his hand and gets a perplexed look on his face..... I remember talking to a woman, then leaving the Way Station, and then you stopped me here....."
The kitten follows you across the room towards the kitchen, it meows again as you start searching for something to feed it. You have some left over meat like stuff in your pack (trail rations/jerky) but nothing but water for it to drink. Unless you want to get it drunk.

Evaris pours a little water into one of the newly-acquired bowls and sets it down for the kitten. He puts the dried meat to soak in another bowl of water, but leaves that one on the counter, out of reach. "That meat isn't soft enough for kitten teeth," he tells it.
"Shall I open this package, do you think?" he asks Roel. "Or wait for the others?"

At the house the kitten laps at the water, making a little mess while getting most of it in to itself. Roel looks at Evaris and raises an eyebrow, "Might be important." with the message delivered he heads off taking various personal effects up to the rooms upstairs.
As Lanlis asks the halfling, "I obviously didn't lose my escortee, I got paid, but I can't remember leaving the Waystation. And I'd never carry this much money around in my hand flashing it to everyone, that's just dumb." He quickly makes the silver vanish about his body, with a few coins in a lot of different locations. At the Speakeasy a pretty halfelf in a barmaid's outfit stops by the table."Anything you gentlemen want? more smokes? drink refills? We don't have food here so don't bother asking." From down below a commotion is starting up near the door, and it's starting to get louder.

If there isn't a vanity in this room, he creates an illusionary mirror beside his bed and begins one of his extended cosmetic restorative rituals. As the time passes, he begins to feel more and more like himself again. As he places a mask over his face, an unseen servant begins to spray a light powder into his hair. The calcium-rich powder had a wonderful scent ... made from the pulverized bones of cuttlefish, rare and fragrant herbs and the finest hominy starch. Such luxury was afforded by only a few, but Emrys was worth it.

Emrys hears Evaris moving about the first floor, and hears him talking as if to a little kid. Evaris opens the package and inside wrapped in a black silk square is a tiny silver greatsword strung on a braided silk cord of a silvery color. As he's distracted by the contents the kitten starts rubbing against his leg.
The halfling answers, "No, everything seemed normal, well as normal as can be after the explosion of the wagon, at the Waystation. I saw this woman and approached like I usually do, asked if she needed a guide and well... I don't remember anything else, I can't even remember what she looked like. What's happened to me?" He sounds very worried.
The halfelf heads off quickly and you see her head down the spiral stairs at the far end of the platform. Looking over the edge, there are four or five halforcs trying to push their way in and the argument seems to indicate that the halforcs are members of some other organization and they are unwelcome. From up above a booming voice speaks and is heard throughout the entire speakeasy. "You were warned that you are not welcome here, this is a neutral establishment, we will have no one in here that takes sides. Either leave or you will be found on the trash level, possibly in more than one part." The conflict down on the first level stops as the voice is heard. Perception 35 Highlight to display spoiler: { A couple of the halforcs actually turned paler when the voice spoke and are obviously nervous about something.} The leader of the halforc group motions for them to turn around and leave.

The Minotaur grins at his companion, "of course there is, but that is really isn't a requirement." He's about to elaborate when the commotion below distracts him.
Barratore looks over the rail and into the smokey area below. He is about to stand and possibly hop down. After all, this was he new favorite place and he was not about to sit on his behind while it got messed up. The booming voice holds him in place and he gazes upward, but notices nothing out of the ordinary. Knowing all of his friends are better at that sort of thing he asks them, "either of you see the speaker?"

"A tiny greatsword," Evaris muses. "A contradiction in terms, I think. I wonder what it could mean?" He places the trinket back in its silk wrapper and sets it carefully out of reach of the kitten.
"I'm pretty sure it isn't a cat toy, whatever else it may be," he says. He wads up a scrap of paper and skips it across the floor for the kitten to chase.

"I'm going to trail those half-orcs. I'll catch up with you in a bit." Evred finishes his drink and stands up. He cracks his knuckles, walks to the railing, and hops over. Instead of falling, however, he drifts lazily downward. Obviously a ring of feather fall or some such. But halfway to the first level, he disappears. Kinda? He's still there, right? There's a shape and some color and... but that's not him. The blurry something follows the half-orcs out of the tavern.

Brom watches the scene unfold downstairs. "We'll have ta find a different place when that kind of mood strikes." He glances upward. "This ain't gonna be my brawlin' bar." He continues before turning back from the commotion.
"I know there is, don't know where." He says back to Barratore. "But it'd be nice ta know where for when, I know, not now."
Brom grabs the eager newcomer. "I wouldn't do that. Til we get a better lay of the land, ya just be better sticking together." He says referring to the division of turf and the controlling factors in each area.
If Evred doesn't listen and follows anyway, you can hear a great sigh come from the barbarian's mouth.

The young Halfling agrees to go with Lanliss, "You guys have been fair with me, and my losing a few hours where I was walking around and now don't remember it bothers me." The two of you head for the location of your new home.
At home the small box gets set aside, the kitten chases the wad of paper and it's discovered that the meat has softened enough to feed the little beast. Up stairs, things are getting comfortable as the conditioner worked into the skin. The rooms are basically the same on each floor, only two look out over the front street compared to the other two looking out over the little alley.
At the speakeasy, the halforcs have left and Evred has drifted to the "ground" floor and makes his way out, you can't see him directly, but you can almost follow his movements by the way various patrons move suddenly, soon the sudden movements end in the bar as Evred has made it to the door. You have no success in spotting the speaker up above, and you don't hear him again. The guards at both ends are doubled up though with now two brutes standing at the bottom steps leading up to the platform. Soon the barmaid arrives with smokes and drinks, if she notices there is one less of the group, she says nothing, only collecting the money for the service.
Evred manages to make it into the hallway and quietly follows the group, the doorman opens the door to let them be escorted out by the toughs that are acting as bouncers. Stealth DC 35 to exit without being noticed, failure means the bouncers notice you leaving but make no never mind out of it. Stealth DC 30 for the halforcs not to notice you once you exit the speakeasy.

Barratore has a couple quick questions for the barmaid when she shows up for the money. Sitting on the table is an extra 5 gold. "Couple quick questions. What was that about and who's up there that shooed them out?"

Drinks and cigars are the entertainment for the evening. Of course, when Brom and Barratore are together and drinking the conversation inevitably leads to a nostalgic discussion of past deeds and their friendly competition as most warriors have. Deeds of old and slain foes can be heard by any nearby. Words like giants, vampires, sea monsters and others are spoken by Brom as they relive battles they've survived.

The kitten looks at Evaris meaningfully, as if it expects him to already know her name. She consoles herself by eating the food that was thoughtfully brought to her. Lanliss continues to comfort the Halfling who still seems to be concerned, but is calmer now than earlier.
Evred manages to sneak out of the bar and begin following the half-orcs. As best he can tell, he has not been detected yet. As he follows, Evred sees the half-orcs taking turns looking over their shoulder to see if they are being followed. They are either expecting trouble or might be concerned about being followed. Emrys takes some effort at making himself feel to be at home, and is rewarded by the relaxed state he now finds himself in.
Barratore and Brom are concerned about Evred heading out on his own, but decide he is capable of taking care of himself. In the meantime they try to gather a bit of information. The barmaid gives a very suggestive smile as she accepts the offered coins. "Well, anytime a handful of toughs win a few barfights in Float City, they start getting ideas that they could become a guild or clan or somesuch. I think that's all it is. I have seen them hanging around a fellow who frequents the upstairs here sometimes. Every few days maybe. My guess is he is the one who chased them, so they didn't start a fight and get his membership revoked."
Edson helps Brom and Barratore remember that there are many types of conquest an adventurer can undertake.

When they arrive at the place. Lanliss opens the door and says/asks rather loudly. Is anybody home ?

Evred continues to follow the half-orcs. After a short while, they reach the entrance to the ramps leading to the other levels of the city. A quick signal from one of them and they all scatter and try to hide. Evaris explains to Emrys about a mysterious package that came with the kitten and wonders what it could mean.
Lanliss stops and picks up some baked goods from a local merchant before returning to the house with the halfling in tow. The baker seems pleased to have some new neighbors, and offers to give a discount if you frequent his establishment. "My name is Morrt. I heard about how you helped out the Turtlemistress with some sort of turtle problem. Word is you did the City a favor, and I and my family are glad to have you around." As you leave he tosses a tasty glazed apple fritter treat to the halfling. "Good day!"
Brom asks to keep some topics a secret. He thinks the waitress either didn't hear the comment, or is professional enough to ignore it.

So something happened at the bottom of the lake. He thanks the barmaid and looks to his drink. "After this round, we can find some food, sounds good to me."

At the speakeasy, the remaining members of the group finish up their drinks and have taken enough puffs that the cigars are down to stubs. As they make to go the waitress as she collects the coinage for the drinks and smokes lays 10 small tokens on the table. "They'll get you in, if you don't get the new entrance word when it's changed. But we will be moving again soon, we always shift around every few weeks. Have a nice evening gentlemen." With that she heads off to wait on another table.
Evred manages to keep his eyes on one of the half-orcs. Following along behind his carefully, he follows him down to the fence level. He sees the half-orc duck behind a barrel and when he goes to look, he's gone. At the house, it's discovered that the house has apparently gotten a kitten as a resident. The others in the kitchen notice that the halfling that escorted them to the Inn has accompanied Lanliss. Lanliss explains the current troubles with the lad. He can't remember his last escort, but knows he escorted someone, mainly because he had a handful of coins. Lanliss is also told about the small package that arrived.

The shadows coalesce nearby into the form of a canine made of condensed darkness. Evred reaches out and rubs his head behind his ears. "I need you to search the area, boy. Expanding spiral. Stop and return as soon as you find anything funny. Start with this barrel."

At the house, "I know I was at the Waystation earlier this afternoon. I remember meeting a woman and she agreed to be escorted by me. I have the money to prove it. But I can't remember her, the job or any of it, I only remember being shaken and then I was talking to him with the money from the escort still in my hand. Even I'm smart enough not to walk around showing off my money." The problem is apparently selective memory loss.
On the way out of the Speakeasy, they are told the best steakhouse is up on the gold level, but it's recommended that they get some much better clothes if they want service there. If they are looking for food with meat Nori's has the best tasting food on the level, and it's not usually mystery meat either.
Blue starts spinning around in ever larger circles and vanishes into the wall. he reappears almost immediately. He indicates that there is a passageway, a not very big one, but still a passageway hidden behind a concealed door right behind the barrel.

At home, detect magic is cast after a few minutes of close scrutiny there is found the faint traces of enchantment magic, but it's not really magic, it's something very close but different.
At Nori's the pies of the day are moose and gator, both smell delicious. You are welcomed by the owner and given samples of each to be sure you get what you want. "I heard you about the recovery of the turtles, everyone was worried about the young, I hope they weren't in any danger."
After opening the concealed door and starting in, you get about 10 feet and there is suddenly an Alarm spell going off, with in moments of the spell being triggered, a solid wall drops into place about 10 feet further into the 30 foot long tunnel, more thunks of stuff dropping into place behind the first obstacle can be heard. The way seems well and truly blocked, magic was used as an alert, but the "doors" seemed to be manual, or they would have all dropped at once.

While Blue looks forward, Evred makes his way backward until he emerges back into the alley. He asks Blue for a summary of what he saw past the last trap door. Barratore lets Brom fill in any conversations about the Turtles and simply backs him up with agreeing nods and a grunt here and there as he feels appropriate. The gator pie hits Barratore a bit wrong as he tastes it and so he settles for a few pies of Moose. The game tang of the meat is more subtle, being in a pie form, than he prefers, but overall it is quite good.
At Nori's he asks the owner about other reputable places they might go. "Like a good Bakery and pastry shop. A good place to get fruits and vegetables and a good antique or curio shop."

(sorry for late posting.... been dealing with a messed up foot among other things.)
Evred manages to get back into the alley without being noticed, the report he gets is: "Those were dead drop walls, triggered by someone further inside. It was a small room not more than 10 by 10 and there was an alarm spell going off. A lever had been pulled and there was a open door going exiting into another alley on the other side of the buildings. It was a busy street, no idea who was from the hidden room." Heading back towards the bar you encounter a few people leaving.
Collecting a few meat pies, you also get the answers to your questions. "Well we also bake breads here, but they don't last very much past noon, stale bread is terrible. Down the way is a butcher, some carts set up in the mornings with fresh vegetables and fruit when shipments come in, or what they can harvest from their own growings. With whatever happened at the Waystation, prices are starting to rise, I hope it's only temporary."
The halfling nods consent to allow you to cast the spell, he closes his eyes and sort of tenses up, waiting for something terrible. You cast the spell, it settles over the youth and you see it take effect. Watching with your Detect magic spell recast, you see the spell fully ensconced on him, but there was no reaction, no flicker of anything.... Whatever is effecting him, it is more than a simple spell.....
Is everyone headed back to the house now or is it still the G.B. directive?

Arriving back at the tavern, Evred makes his report as he sits back down at the table. " I followed the half-orcs for several blocks. At a designated point they scattered. I tailed one of them down an alley. He used and escape tunnel to enter a safe room. I followed after but a detection spell closed a trapdoor to block me. Blue was able to take a peek and see that the room had another tunnel leading to the other side of the building. Whoever they are, they are very organized and very paranoid. They never saw me, but we should probably watch out for them."

At the house, after magical means of finding out, or trying to find out have come up short the three discuss what each had found out. First, the lad had his memory effected somehow. Second the house adopted a kitten. Third, a package arrived with miniature greatsword on a silvery silken braided cord. Fourth the others have yet to return from wherever they have spent the evening.
The trio at the bar, some having gotten food, one following the half-orcs decide it's time to return home and get settled in.
It takes a hour or so, but the gear is collected from the" Message in a Bottle" and at their new house those returning find the other three talking with the halfling that escorts people who use the Waystation to arrive. Both groups bring the other up to date with what has been going on, now for the group to figure out what's going on.....

Barratore enters the house and asks Lanliss which room he could drop his gear. He could organize it later and he didn't have a preference on where he slept. Barratore arches an eyebrow at Evred's mention of eating. "It's only been an hour, you sure there's no halfling blood in you?" he asks with a grin.
Picking up the great sword, Barratore looks closely at the blade and handle for any markings and muses aloud, "Anyone know of a guild or some such that uses anything like this? One of the council houses perhaps, like maybe one we've cheesed off recently by being about as rude as can be?" he ends looking at Edson (Perception 25 going over the item for markings)
The kitten was cute, but Barratore had other thoughts. He didn't like so much that the guy who was always hanging about the Waystation just helped out someone or someones and now can't remember any of it. "Smells alot like the wagons. They rolled through, no one thinks anything of it and a building explodes a few hours later. Wiping memories would be a handy way to do stuff like that. We still don't know why or who blew up that place."

The group coalesces at the new house. Recent events are told to each other and looking around the house happens. There are a few pieces of furniture but not very many, by grabbing chairs from the upper floors enough are found so the group and sit and talk. The miniature sword is examined. The strangest thing discovered about the sword is that it wasn't molded, even at it's tiny size (about 3 inches long) it was forged, the hammer marks can be seen. There is no makers mark near it's tang, but not everyone who forges swords use marks. A closer look at the braided cord shows it's made of braids with-in braids with-in braids. You can't see small enough but you almost think individual strands of silk are braided for the first layer, then they are braided, and again and again. It must be very strong, but still very delicate.
Reflex save DC 20 for examining the sword. Highlight to display spoiler: { take 1 point of damage, and 1 point bleed damage every minute until magically healed}

Let me have a look, Lanliss grabs the sword from Barratore. He quickly glances at it trying to find anything that might have been overlooked and trying to estimate how much is it worth. He quickly sees and notices/feels that this sword is dangerous and can cut slow and inelegant hands and throws the sword back at Barratore saying. It's yours, enjoy.

Even more careful examination of the sword reviles it to be made of tempered silver and it is masterwork, but there is no magic aura about the weapon. That's not to say magic wasn't involved in it's creation, just that it is not magical as it is. As an ornament if it was to be sold to someone it might bring 100 gold for the sword and another 50 gold for the braided silk cord it hangs from. The kitten isn't hard to catch, it's friendly enough and as soon as it's picked up, begins purring, loudly. The halfling youth, "I appreciate your trying to figure out what happened today, but I should be headed home."
