[DM Jeff] - Morning in Bonetown

The group continues to relax in the morning as discussions start to turn to the mysterious witch at the edge of town and the new plant that appears to be following Aexana around. After much discussion and much consumption of bacon, the group decides that they need to seek out the witch first. Zeoll asks Jozhur where they might find the witch, but Jozhur is not exactly sure. When he met her previously, it was at the edge of town, not at her house. There are rumors that she lives outside town to the north. As Aexana can attest, the land outside the town of Bonetown is quite wild and overgrown. Much of the island is a thick jungle and it would take quite a bit of effort – or perhaps magic – to keep an area clear enough to live in.

The brothers say that they will take care of cleaning up after the breakfast and tell the group that they should feel free to head out and “save the Wold” while they’re out. Heading out into the streets, they find the streets are quite a bit quieter than last night. Many sailors wake up late, especially after busy nights like last night. As they head to the docks, there is some activity. There are sentries on duty, as always, at the warehouses and at some of the docks. There are a few dock workers already working to load ships back up that had been unloaded yesterday to assist with the evacuation. The group heads towards the north side of town and towards the hill that leads out of town and into the jungles of the island.

Towards the edge of town, the path that leads to the end of the town runs along the docks and the beach where the docks end. As the group reaches that area, Magana glances out to sea and sees a small boat slowing making its way to shore. There is a person in the boat, paddling the boat and also bailing – the boat is clearly just barely staying afloat. As the small boat gets closer to land, it continues to sink more and the frustration of the person rowing the ship can be seen. Eventually, the person gets out of the boat into chest-deep water, reaches into the boat, pulls out a chest, and starts wading towards the shore, directly towards the group.

Notes: At some point we’re going to need some marching order, you know, just in case… Also, please welcome our newest player, Ed!

Jozhur sighs, "It's been awhile since I've seen old Goodie, I'm not sure I could find her place again. I'd probably just get us lost if I tried to lead the way, I'm no woodsman. She was lIvins alon the shore when she rescued me."

As the group heads out of town and sees the person struggling with a chest, Jozhur wades into the water and offers a hand. "Greetings! Would you like some help getting that to shore?"

ooc: Jozhur initially washed up at Goodie Bess' hut outside of town. That's been some time ago, Jozhur is no skilled outdoorsman, and he was new to the area. Seems reasonable he wouldn't remember the exact location.

Jozhur either brings up the rear to cover the group's back or travels just behind the heavies. With the current group makeup, he or Zeoll are probably best to bring up the rear.

Reggie seems to be struggling with the small chest but more so out of frustration at something else as opposed to actually having difficulty with the chest.

She seems to be muttering various curses in Orcish under her breath. Currently she does not seem to be wearing very much. Some tattered pants, no shoes, a torn sleeveless men's shirt. Her exposed skin at first seems to be a little wrinkled but it is soon apparent that those are scars. most likely from a whip.

Her wrists have definitive markings of having been wearing manacles for some time. The chest itself is of orcish design and even bears the markings of the Bloodkin.

As Joshur approaches she is apparently caught a little of guard as his offer to help causes her to jump slightly. turning to face the one who addressed her she looks a bit defensive.

from the front she is wearing a simplistic necklace, (a simple string holding a crudely carved pendant depicting the ancient High Woldian symbol of Domi.

She starts to address the man in orcish, but quickly stops and revert to common. Who are you, you gonna send me back? you best not try,

Reggie is defensive and protective of the chest she is bearing.

Easy now - we're not in the business of sending anybody where they don't want to be. At least not any who aren't out to profit from the suffering of others. Looks like you were on the other side of that for a time though, so all we'll be offering is a helping hand, and maybe some leftover bacon from breakfast.

Reggie regards the words a moment. she lowers her hands upon hearing bacon, actually any breakfast would do at this point.

She is a little hesitant to fully trust them,, but hunger can make people due strange things.

Rillett will smile at this new person. He's spent many years working with the down and out in Bonetown, and knows they can be a touchy lot until you spend some time with them.

Rillett is dressed in white from head to toe, with a gleaming, white breastplate and clothes that look clean and freshly pressed. He wears a mithral circlet on his brow that beard Gargul's symbol, and a symbol of Gargul around his neck. His wooden shield has a symbol of Gargul on it, and at his belt is a mace.

"I'm not sure where we'd send you back to even if we did. At least not on that boat," gesturing to the sinking vessel.

"My name is Rillett and you are welcome here. You have arrived in Bonetown. Have you been here before? Is there someone or something here you seek? I see you carry Domi's symbol. Bonetown can be a rough place."

"We are on our way somewhere at the moment, or I'd take you back to our place to let you clean up. Actually, that might be best. We didn't really have an appointment set. Why don't we return to our house and give this traveller a meal and some fresh clothes? It will only delay us a bit, and it seems like the least we could do. It's not like Goodie Bess is expecting us."

The old liontaur also welcomes the newcomer. His once-auburn mane is mostly grey and silver now. He wears spectacles and a back brace, if that's what that wide belt is. And he carries a honking huge wood shield carved with symbols of nature.

"I am Zeoll, a Seerr of Maab, and Crradled of Eberryon," he says, in a thick accent. "Please be welcome among us. Are you fleeing the minions of Biloopl? We have set ourrselves against the upstarrt godling, and we seek its demonic minions to battle."

As to how to get to the wise woman's house, well, if she is on the coast, then we should just start walking along the shore, and we'll get there.

Magana evaluates the newcomer with a practiced eye. At 8 and a half feet, she towers over most of the others. That and her nearly white fur and horns make her stand out like a (pardon the pun) bull in a china shop.

"Be welcome stranger. I am Magana the Tauress. I say this up front because most humans have never seen a female Taur off the Isles, and I tire of correcting the assumption that I am a male."

Her deep voice is very calm and courteous and she is remarkably well spoken, although her pattern of speech seems a bit formal and archaic. Odd for someone who is clearly of the meat-shield variety.

"I surmise that you have escaped and long captivity, and thus likely have no local resources to draw upon. Clearly you are tough enough to fend for yourself, but in the spirit of charity, I offer you my good-will and assistance. I believe the rest of my comrades will also welcome you if that is your will.

"I propose we make a quick stop at our ship, the Lionfish, to let you take stock, have some bacon, and introduce yourself before we continue.

"Have you a name you would care to share with us?"

Magana gestures politely back towards the harbor, intending to head to the ship (it being closer than the Portside House) if all agree.

Reggie is a bit taken aback at all the attention. she eyes the Taur with curiosity. most likely she has never seen a Taur, male or female.

Aexana, the little Gnome, walks up to the newcomer and smiles. The plant companion seems to follow in her shadow... Aex looks up at the Half-Orc lass...

"You seem stranded? When time comes and your belly stops growling I sure am curious to hearing your tale miss... I'm Aexana and this... " she says as she points at the plant that follows Aex's every move, "... this is... well I don't know yet... but we'll get acquainted sooner or later... Are you injured? " the little Greenmage asks as she scans the Half-Orc woman's body up and down.

Jozhur spots the Bloodkin emblem on Reggie's chest. "Hmm, you're escaped from the Bloodkin, eh? Don't fret, those slavers are no friends of ours. My..." Jozhur fingers each of the weapons on his waist and the bow on his back, [b]"hmm, I don't have the weapons anymore, but I've spilled their blood in the past, freed slaves from them, and would do so again."

Jozhur is a pretty typical sized human. Though he is rather slightly built, he appears fairly athletic. The jet black shaggy mop of hair on his head would probably be almost shoulder length, if he were to comb is straight. He's dressed in a baggy dark gray jacket and pants, along with a very dark green cloak. He carries a finely crafted longbow on his back and a few weapon hilts can be seen through the opening in the front of his jacket. A mithril shirt also peeks from under his coat.

Reggie grabs the Chest and carries it on her shoulder as she is escorted to the ship.

She never does answer about the chest contents, well at least not right now.

Reggie seems to know her way around a ship as she is brought on board. checking things out.

eventually she is shown where to the galley for some food. Reggie practically makes a pig of herself, like she has not had a decent meal in a very long time. She does not answer questions immediately as she is to busy stuffing her face.

Reggie starts to finish, well mainly cause there is getting to be little left to eat. looking about, got any Rum? she asks.

As she slows down a bit. Thanks for the meal. its been a long time since I got any real kindness. she pauses, wait, you guys don't plan of eating me or anything?

The one thing she isn't doing right now is answering the questions. it almost seems deliberate in her avoidance.

Reggie glances toward the Minotaur. she glances at her chest then back at the Minotaur. There is that awkward silence for a moment.

Good thing I am not an elf then. she says breaking the silence.

she looks as straight faces as she can returning a glare at the Minotaur. then she cracks a smile.

So, you have questions, and I might have some answers. of course forgive me if I am not exactly the trusting sort. at least not yet.

As the party moves aboard the Lionfish, Rillett observes how Reggie moves deftly across the ship, noting her attention to the ship's details. (Perception 28). Clearly, she has some skill aboard a ship. Or maybe she's looking at the ship's defenses and limitations. She also seems to be avoiding our questions.

We now face an adversary from the sea, whose minions seem to come from the sea. And our recent friend has come from the sea as well. Seems rather coincidental. Could be one of the demons we fought in some sort of a disguise.

As they go below, he will lag behind and cast a silent (rod) Deeper Insight. Shortly after this, Rillett's eyes will turn a milky white, as he continues to observe Reggie for one minute (Probe Psyche with a Sense Motive 39).

(a Minotaur and a walking plant just to name a couple) Having recently escaped being a slave she seems worried that you are also slavers. The spell reveals that Reggie has had a very long life of imprisonment to slavery probably since she was a child.}

Since Reggie does not appear to be injured Aex leaves the talking to others. She's never been good at it in the first place. The little purple-pink haired Gnome, all dressed in vibrant greens, turns to the plant companion that seems to trail wherever the Greenmage lass goes... Fact is, Aex looks pretty frail and carries only a sling and a sickle... clearly she's not in this group's front line...

Conversation continues as the group heads to the Lionfish. There is discussion about slavers and Reggie does seem a bit nervous around the group, but not so nervous that she has lost her appetite. Once aboard, Magana sends Tula on a couple errands, which Tula quickly completes. Reggie is presented with a set of clothes while if not new, are in good shape. They might not be a perfect fit, but they are indeed close.

Rillett is a bit nervous about the new arrival and spends some time delving into some serious secrets. Anyone who looks will notice that Rillett’s eyes have gone milky white, and not in a friendly way. As the group relaxes on the ship, the sun rises a bit more into the clear sky. There are a couple small clouds floating far out to sea, but otherwise it looks to be a clear, warm day. Activity on the dock picks up as sailors load and unload ships and ships take to the sea. Magana casually mentions that the group was on the way to visit someone as the discussions and discoveries continue.

Reggie accepts the clothes and starts to change. apparently no modesty and begins changing in front of everyone.

Before she gets to far, and realizing she is getting a few stares. she just looks at them, What? I'm changing. like it is no big deal.

The short time she was mostly disrobed, her body is covered in marks from whip lashes. Before she covers it up, there are signs of a large cut in her chest from a wound long ago. she does wear a second necklace, holding a key.

(this is not an active bleeding wound but rather a surgical scar.)

Once she is dressed. Thanks for the clothes and thanks for the food. So, where are you guys heading? I guess I am supposed to repay you for this stuff.

"Don't even consider it. It is the duty of all good people to help those in need. If there is anything else you require, just ask. If it is reasonable, it will be done.

She smiles again. "We have been fairly successful of late in profiting from the destruction of evil-types. Fighting for good and gold. What more could a person ask for?" She continues without pause for an answer to the obviously rhetorical question.

We," she gestures to the others, "now seek a resident of these parts to question her with regards to some demons we recently faced. If you feel up to it, I invite you to accompany us. If not, feel free to take your leisure here, or make your own path and we will wish you well. Either way, we will soon need to continue to the destination we sought when we crossed paths. What say you?"

Jozhur shakes his head at the sight of Reggie's scar covered body, "You're more than welcome to travel with us, those filthy slavers may be looking for you, and we'll see that you aren't captured. If you want, we could pay them a visit sometime in the future and see that you never have to worry about them again."

He turns back to the others, "Goodie's place may be hard to see from ship, we could sail right by it. Probably better off on foot. We can also let the crew stay in port that way."

Reggie thinks things over for a bit, I think I will take you up on that offer.

she goes to the chest and pulls out the key, now lets see what I got in the haul from that ship.

opening the chest, Reggie sifts through the contents. she finds a hat (a tricorn style hat) and what looks like an overcoat made of supple leather. A pair of leather bracers and a black belt.

She puts on the items she pulled out then pulls out a pouch. opening it up she sifts through it. who here is the Captain of this crew?

Assuming that one of the party is in command.

she pulls out a small red ruby fro the pouch and tosses it at the captain. should cover the food I ate. she then tucks the pouch into one of the coat's pockets.

ooc: the ruby is worth about 50 gold I figured it would be pirate like to carry excess cash in various types of gems and such as well as coin.

One thing, If I help you on this little endeavor, as payment, I want to be made a part of the crew. this is a fine ship, I am sure I can bring lots to her success, given my experience.

Aex winces when she notices the scars on Reggie... the woman must have gone through a lot! The surgical cut for Aex is the most interesting though...
Then seeing her clothes it makes Aex suspect she's been part of a few sailing crews before?!

"Looks like you'll have a lot of tales to tell when you're ready for sharing them Lady Reggie. Not speaking before the captain of course but I'm sure we can use an extra pair of experienced hands on board of the Lionfish."

Zeoll, an old-fashioned type, averts his eyes as Reggie changes.

In answer to her last statement about joining the crew, the old liontaur says, "I am surre we'll be prroud to have you join the Lionfisherrs, as we call ourrselves."

He agrees that they will miss less if they travel the coast on foot rather than by sail. "Captain Jozhurr, you arre rright. Lead us, and we'll make a good walk of it."

He admires Magana's new armor. "Is that the Charrging RHINO Hide Arrmorr of which I have hearrd, my dearr?" Zeoll is careful to prronounce it perfectly, and smiling. "Orr is it Rreally Hide In Name Only?"

[DM Jeff] - Along the Beach

The sun feels warm as it rises, bathing the ship in rays of light. Zeoll is ready to move along, but the rest of the group is still being polite to their new guest and the walls of suspicion appear to be lowering quickly. There is some discussion about how to get there, but eventually the group agrees that they need to seek out the witch and Reggie has agreed to go along with the Lionfishers. One of the crew groans at Zeoll’s attempt at a joke about Magana’s new armor.

The berth of the Lionfish is near the north end of the docks of Bonetown. The rocky beach continues along the edge of town and beyond the docks as it leads to the black rock cliffs north of town. There is a meager trail that leads up the edge of the beach and into the jungle that is the rest of the island, but clearly there are very few who wander far from the “civilized” area of the town. As the crew is preparing to depart, they notice a small, misshapen, stooped creature making its way down the beach towards the docks and the town. This creature appears to be bent in two and carrying something metal in its hands. Could it now be another minion of Billoopl or a demon finally reaching the town? A sailor on the docks calls out and points in alarm.

Hearing Zeoll call the woman they seek a wizardess, he wonder at the difference between witches, wizards, and sorcerers. He hasn't had much experience with any of them.

The look on Reggie's face confirms the Heartseed, but she does not confirm it in her voice. it is most likely something she does not wish to discuss (at least not right now)

Reggie smiles as she seems to be accepted. she only hopes that she does not kill them when she "changes" I will do my best Captain she says to the others but centered on Jozhur.

She follows along on the beach keeping a pace or so behind. looking to see where she is most needed in the line-up. when the strange person is seen Reggie stops and watches. Not sure what information is needed or truly even why. demons were best left undisturbed in her mind.

The salt breeze blows in gently from the water, cooling the air a bit, but it is still getting quite warm. Looking over at the hunched figure, Zeoll and Terser move quickly to the woman while the others follow at a more cautious distance. As the group gets closer, they can see the woman is quite twisted: she has an unnaturally long, hooked nose that has a number of unpleasant warts on it. Her left ear is completely missing, as are some teeth and the middle finger from her right hand. You can see the item she is carrying is a small cauldron with a lid and a curved handle.

She croaks, “It is good to see you again, Jozhur, though your group looks a little different than the last time I saw you, stronger too.” To everyone else she says, “Pleased to meet you. I am Goodie Bess.”

“Well dearies, I come bearing a gift, Bess’s famous pond apple cobbler. Who wants some? Don’t be bashful, I brought plenty to share.” She puts her cauldron down and from a pocket pulls out several simple wooden bowls and spoons and a ladle.

He mutters, "I got a bad feeling about this" as he walks up and pulls some ointment out of his pocket. Applying the ointment, he casts True Seeing, stopping about 50' away from the group. He scans this Goodie Bess and the surrounding area.

The temptation to sample the “treat” from the blood witch is too much for the group. When Goodie opens the container, the smell of apples wafts through the air, tinted with something unidentifiable. She first scoops out a large bowl for herself, setting that aside before serving everyone else. There is almost a slight musty smell to it as she scoops out large spoonfuls into small bowls. Jozhur glowingly greets Goodie and grabs some cobbler. Terser quickly follow suit, ready to see how his dwarven stomach will hold up.

Zeoll samples the cobbler, but also asks how Goodie happens to be in the area. She replies, “Ah yes, quickly to business for this one, yes?” She nods and moves about, continuing to serve as she continues, “Quite the light show we’ve had recently, wasn’t it?” She giggles, “I don’t usually travel out this way, but Alemi saw fit to give old Goodie a vision when that stone of yours was put to rest and I felt that my patron wanted me to share it with you.”

When you taste the cobbler, it has a bitter taste with sweet overtones. As you swallow it, you can feel some sort of magic briefly flowing through your body. The aftertaste, however, tastes more like you have just eaten some moldy dirt from a thick swamp.

Magana tries to pay Goodie, but she ignores her as she continues her story. Her voice becomes grave and the air seems thicker as she says, “I saw black sails on the water, stone and fire raining down from the sky, sea monsters rising up from the depths, Billoopl’s visage, demons, daemons… and then the flag of Bonetown.”

She pauses a moment, clearing her throat, before continuing, “I am sorry if this is a little vague, but these things usually are. However, if Billoopl counts demons and daemons among his minions, mayhap my sisters and I could do something about that, though we may need some help…” She trails off, putting down the pot with the cobbler on the stones. After a pause she says, “Your group once gave me a fine blade in lieu of a service, are you still scared to do a favor for a little old lady? Or is your new blood made of sterner stuff?”

She cackles and laughs at herself and then continues before anyone can answer her question, “My coven can do a ritual that will help ward Bonetown proper from Demons and Daemons for a time, but we need a component that is hard to find. For the ritual to work, we need the bloom of a Ghost Orchid. Can you find us such a thing? If you can, bring it to me at my house outside of town. Just follow that path there, leading up to the jungle, and you will certainly stumble upon it quickly. These old legs just cannot walk as far these days.”

Finding is one thing. Retrieving is another. Frankly, I bet I'm better at the second. Maybe between Zeoll's visions and Aexana's knowledge of green things in general we can suss out the location of the bloom you seek. It certainly seems like a worthwhile use of our time.

What kind of ward will this be, though? Will they be physically unable to penetrate it? Or will it shield Bonetown from their perceptions completely? If it's the first, then we can lay a trap for any of those creatures that Billoopl may think to send to sack the town, taking them out when they can't penetrate the boundary.

being last to have some and not seeing ill of the others she ate.

the magic went through her, though she tried to play it off like nothing happened.

Reggie listened to the stories,, and this Billoop or whatever he is called was entirely unfamiliar to her. she had never encountered nor heard of him.

however, she has heard of demons, and that was something she was not thrilled about facing. but again, Reggie does not let it bother her, at least outwardly. at this point, she feels it best to simply follow thoe lead of the others, at least until she can figure all of this out.

Aexana intended to savour the sweet smelling cobbler but when the bitterness and then aftertaste lke moldy dirt from a thick swamp she frowns. Not wanting to show Goodie that she dislikes the taste she smiles and carefully says: "Now that's an interesting taste..."
As soon as she feels the magic flowing through her veins she smiles.

When hearing they are supposed to go look for a Ghost Orchid Aex tries to recall whatever she knows of the flower but that isn't too much (perhaps she should have taken 10 instead as then I would have ended up with a 22 :-/ ) Even a second attempt only Knowledge nature 21.

Intrigued with the flower Aex asks Goodie Bess if she can tell them some specifics about the Ghost Orchid. Color? Size? How to preserve it? Is it part of this plane?!?

When Magana asks about the location of the ghost orchid, Goodie replies, “I am sorry dearie, if I knew where I could go pluck one quickly, I would be off myself you know.” Goodie turns to go when Terser asks about the ward. Goodie says, “Well, it can delay them for a short time, and it can act as an alarm so the town would know they are coming and slow them down. It won’t have the power to stop them permanently, that’s a bit beyond even my coven’s powers.”

Zeoll suggest that the part just head out into the jungle to search for the orchid while Rillett promises Goodie that they will help. Reggie is a little confused, not knowing about the party’s recent adventures and fights with Billoopl. Aexana grimaces as she eats the cobbler, but then tries to think if she has heard of the flower before. A torch appears above her head as she does remember hearing about the rare Ghost Orchid growing on an island here in the jungle near Bonetown. The details were not quite exact, especially since there are no known maps of the jungle around town, but she has heard that there is an island on an island, guarded by man-eating plants, that is likely to have a ghost orchid or two on it. She asks Goodie details about the flower and Goodie says, “Oh, dearie, there’s nothing so special about it, it’s just rare and hard to find. It is a fine white flower (which Aexana can clearly recall from her own knowledge) and is about the size of your fist. As long as it is mostly intact, it will work for our spell.” Aexana knows that the flower is a non-magical plant of this plane, just usually quite hard to find and nearly impossible to grow except in the wild.

Zeoll calls upon his training in geography and reminds his friends that "Bonetown sits in a small harrborr on a rratherr larrge island called Pearrl Island."

He's reciting from the pamphlet he is in the middle of writing called "Known Facts Of The Middle Seas." He offers to let his friends read his first draft, if they like. For the essence of his monograph, click here.

He also notes that the island is too large to cover in a day, but that the flower is likely nearby. He suggests that speakign with local animals and plants is a good way to find the plant, in addition to their own lore ... and he looks at Aexana for confirmation.

The old liontaur prays for Guidance and also casts the spell his old friend Toros created that bestows a centaur's instinct for nature. He himself has some suggestions, based on his Knowlege of Nature (rolled a 23) and of his insticts for Survival (rolled a 25).

Aex nods when she's appointed the scouting role. She and her leafy friend will indeed try to gather some information about the whereabouts of this Island on an Island...

While her plant... she really should come up with a name for it... walks a bit ahead of the group checking up with other plants, Aexeagle flies overhead 'talking' to other birds in her surrounding. (casting speak with animals or plants whenever needed). The eagle shape allows her to fly 80ft per round so she should be able to cover quite a bit of terrain.

Goodie picks up her pot and the lid clatters as she closes it. She licks off the spoon and shoves it in her pocket as she heads towards town. She calls out, “Remember sweeties, just bring the orchid to my house and we’ll get things all set up.”

The group philosophically ponders the meaning of an island on the island. No one really has any revealing thoughts about deep significant meanings for the phrase, but everyone sort of points at Aexana, talking about flying and birds. Jozhur thinks, but all he can remember is that there are stories of such a place, perhaps a half a day’s travel from Bonetown. Zeoll thinks about the jungle and knows that there are dangers there enough for everyone. There are plants that are deadly and uneven ground that can lead even the wary into traps. There are few large creatures in the jungle here, but there are many smaller, deadly creatures that rely on stealth.

Rillett sits down to take some time and cast a spell. After his 10 minutes of quietly chanting with his eyes closed, a thought comes to him: “Preparing for challenges from different directions, and not always with killing and death will make the trip easier.”

As Rillett does his thing, Aexana heads up the small hill at the edge of town to where the jungle really begins. She speaks with the plants there and then turns into an eagle and takes to the sky. When she speaks with the plants, at first they are a bit wary, but then they feel that she means them no harm, and they share with her the stories of an area with more water than most, far from the shores. Following those clues, from the air she can quickly spot exactly what the group is looking for: a small island, around one hundred feet across, surrounded by a circle of water, almost like a moat.

Notes: Should you choose to enter the jungle, there is no path (few in Bonetown care about anything outside of the docks). I’ll need some sort of marching order and survival checks from those in the lead…

Reggie simply follows along, she has no where else to go, but she did wish there was rum on this trip. she hasn't had a any for far to long.

It will take time for Reggie to figure out her place. wondering if this excursion was that time or place. she only washed up on shore a few hours earlier, now has thrown her lot in with these folks on some quest for some demon that she has no idea about.

He tells of the island full of cultists that was sank into the sea, their meetings with Gargul and Ga'al, and the party's recent battle with Biloopl's "demon" minions during the effort to retrieve an artifact to make Biloopl mortal. The party makes the trek into the jungle and the sounds of the docks and the town are very quickly left behind as they plow through the thick vines and undergrowth of the jungle. Aexana guides them from above and they turn into the jungle, away from the short path that leads over apparently to Goodie’s house. Terser takes the lead, talking out loud, branches and vines slapping him often. Magana quickly steps up with Terser and also plows through the jungle like a bull in a china shop, shoving vines and branches aside, some of which slap Rillett when they are released.

Jozhur speaks with Reggie, describing the recent adventures of the group. At the same time, he keeps a careful watch in the jungle. At one point, he sees what looks like a large panther crouched on a low branch that simply sits and watches the parade crash through the jungle.

Aexana flies down to receive the spell from Zeoll and then takes flight again. With her eagle eyes, she can see many things moving in the jungle, but nothing that appears to be a threat to the group. From above she can easily follow the group’s progress as they leave a clear path through the jungle – they will have no problem finding their way back unless there is some sort of magical growth to repair all the damage. The walking flower does not seem to mind.

Zeoll watches carefully from the rear of the pack and attempts to offer suggestions to those in the lead. However, by the time he says something about a tree or vine to avoid, the leaders have already knocked it aside to continue their march. He does spot two large colorful birds high in the trees that quickly take to the air when the group approaches. As the group heads around a group of thick trees, Zeoll spots something that doesn’t look right, but before he has a chance to call out, Magana and Terser discover what it was that wasn’t correct: quicksand!

Magana and Terser slip and fall into an area of soft, thick, soggy and very smelly swamp and mud. They both drop into the area, slipping to a depth of four feet to start out. Their feet have not hit bottom, but the thick mud-like substance quickly penetrates their gear and when they break the surface, the stench of rot quickly fills the air.

Notes: The pool of quicksand, now that you have fallen into it, can be seen to be about 20 feet in diameter. Magana and Terser slipped and slid around five feet from the near side. They are sinking. Swim check, DC 10 to not sink further. A second swim check, DC 15, to move 5 feet in a direction. Failure by more than 5 indicates sinking under the surface. Anyone who wishes to attempt to help them out can reach with some item, then make a DC 15 strength check to pull them out. The one stuck needs a DC 10 strength check to hold onto the item and be pulled 5 feet out. Failure by the victim means they need a new swim check, DC 15, or slip off the reaching item and below the surface.

Rillett moves quickly to cast Water Walk.

(OOC: Not sure how you want to handle this touch spell. By my thinking, as long as I can touch folks in the round, it should be OK. Given our relative proximity, I should have plenty of movement to touch the folks behind me, and then move forward another 5 feet onto the quicksand to also touch the sinking Terser and Magana. If this cannot be done, then the priority will be to catch Terser and Magana. Even if she did whack Rillett in the face with branches.)

As Terser and Magana rise up to the surface of the quicksand, Rillett says, "There now. We're not in a big hurry, so maybe we should slow down a little and cut a path. The last thing we need to do is walk into an assassin vine or some poisonous spores."

Rillett's white robes remain pressed and clean even after all this trudging through the dense foliage.

[ooc] ok had a post to submit and yet again, the website did not work for a while. now I lost the post so I hope I can remember everything again [ooc]

Reggie listens to the group's exploits, and the issue about demons. this does not seem to sit well with her, She may have trouble dealing with demons. possibly as she has never faced them nor has much knowledge about them.

Still, this group seems pretty adept at dealing with things. given time, she will learn her place, and possibly earn their trust. Still this may be better than her prior situation, except she may be more comfortable at sea than in the jungle, but this situation will have to do.

Reggie had pondered what she should share with these folks, but her pondering's were cut short by the lead trackers fell into the quicksand. (perhaps her initial observations were a bit off).

As she rummaged her things for some rope, it seemed things were well in hand with magic.

Eventually Reggie receives the spell, and at first she was a bit apprehensive at the magic. but she decided to trust Rillett.

As the magic coursed through her, Reggie's eyes are wide with amazement. it was like she has never experienced such a level of magic cast upon her before. or at least it had been a very long time since she had such an experience.

Reggie goes out upon the Quicksand to test the limits of the magic, she looks like a giddy schoolgirl with a new toy. However, after a few seconds she regains her composure. yeah, lets be more careful. perhaps someone that knows a little more about the jungle lead the way?

As the two leaders slip into the quicksand, Rillett is very quick to act. He casts water walk and quickly shares it with the others. Then he walks out onto the quicksand, touching Magana and Terser. The two quickly rise out of the quicksand to the surface, but the sand, muck, goo, and swamp stink stick to them quite thoroughly. They are quite covered on their lower halves with black slimy, horrible smelling goop. It is mostly water-based, so it does not appear to be making anything not work, but it does smell like a rotting trash heap.

The group sets out again through the jungle with Zeoll now leading the way. After another hour of travel, he spots another patch of quicksand, but easily guides the group around it. Aexana is able to guide the group towards the island and the rest of the trip continues without encountering anything else in the jungle. Perhaps the noise of the tromping group has scared off any other predators in the area.

It is late in the day when the group arrives at the shore of the “lake.” The shore area is full of vines, plants, and trees stretching out over the water, trying to reach for the light of the sun. The surface of the water is covered with a few vines and many lily pads and other plants, but is clearly water. There are a few small gaps in the coverage and you can see the water is absolutely black, so you have no idea of the depth. The “lake” looks to be about circular and the island in the lake is about 100 feet across. The edge of the island looks much like the edge you are on: filled with vines and trees reaching out over the water. The water forms a ring around the island and is anywhere from ten to fifteen feet across. It will be difficult to move around the edge of the water on their side because of the mass of trees and brush that reach up to the sky crowded at the edge of the water. From high above Aexana can see that there is a clearing of sorts on the island, off center of the island. She can also spot two rather large stalks on each side of the clearing that are a mass of swaying vines and barbs, and there are a couple of sections that have long pointy sections that almost look like teeth on the massive leaves.

Terser wonders about lighting the entire place up with fire. Of course, being a jungle, everything is pretty damp, so he realizes it would take quite a bit of firepower including possibly a lot of magic, to really get things burning around here. Jozhur ponders the black water, but is hesitant to enter it, looking carefully into the water (perception: 18). The water is not moving at all and is quite black. Zeoll ponders more water walk and realizes the spell only lasts for a few minutes and it has been hours since it was cast. He and Magana ponder crossing the water, unsure of the depth.

Meanwhile, Reggie jumps right in and heads across to the island. She finds that indeed she does have to swim. Her feet and legs hit a few plants and other slimy, unknown things under the surface, but she feels nothing solid and is able to swim across the short channel. Jozhur jumps in as well and quickly follows. The two fight their way through the thick brush and trees on the edge of the island as they pull themselves out of the water. The stench from the water is strong as bits of moss and mold drip off the two. The jungle is as thick or thicker on this side of the water. It is difficult to move through the thick branches and vines and visibility is near zero as soon as you turn away from the edge of the water.

Far above in the sky while the sun heads for the horizon on its daily trip to the other side, Aexana peers down on the island and sees two of the party cross the water and join the island, fortunately on the far side, away from the slight clearing and the massive vines and razor-sharp thorns. She calls down to the plants to ask them about the island. She hears back in a quiet but gruff voice, “Come a little closer, little bird, and we will be glad to show you our comfortable island.” Flying around, she looks around the area to attempt to determine if the island is natural or not. As she flies, she can see that the entire island looks to be in the center of a smaller depression on the larger island, and the smaller island almost looks like it could be the point of the island. In fact, were it taller, it would look like a mountaintop and the more she looks, the more it appears that perhaps one day in the past it was the top of a mountain that somehow dropped into itself, creating a lake and an island. Of course, the source behind such an activity could never be known, but nothing, to her, looks too unnatural…

He thinks that his ability to become invisible will not serve him well since the plants can probably sense creatures just fine despite their lack of eyes.

He draws a particularly finely crafted dagger and stares suspiciously at all the vegetation on the island. Aex is worried when axes are drawn to cut through the plantlife to find a path towards the clearing. She had hoped to magically create a path without damaging any plants...

"Hold the axes... I can cast a spell to make the plantlife shrink to about one-third normal size, becoming untangled and less bushy. Better than destroying them and possibly angering some... "

If interested Aex will cast Diminish Plants thus creating a nicely pruned path that will make it easier for everyone to walk through without destroying any of the plant life.

Terser makes his way through the air with Magana, thankful to not have to reenter the smelly pond. It will be bad enough cleaning the quicksand out of his boots, but washing water out of his beard would be another matter entirely.

Rillett casts the spell on the scared, scary, and/or scarred Terser and Magana and they are able to walk up into the air, but they cannot actually fly. Zeoll stands at the edge of the water and looks around. His eyes catch a number of different sudden moves in the plants, but they appear to be nothing more than the jungle breezes. He sees a startled rainbow-colored bird suddenly fly away from the far side of the island, heading deeper into the forest. Magana steps up into the air, across the water, and stands above the plants near Reggie and Jozhur. The trees and brush here are about 15 feet high, so he is a good distance above them, and the groups can see one another without too much difficulty. Terser walks up to join him as well, glad to avoid the smelly swamp that has covered so many of the group. He idly wonders if the smelly water would have washed off some of the smelly quicksand.

Reggie and Jozhur take out some smaller weapons and prepare to start slicing their way through the thick jungle undergrowth when they hear Aexana call out from above. She says that she will clear a path and casts a spell. However, when she casts the spell, it is apparently much more powerful than she had imagined! She casts the spell and attempts to create a path from where the heroes have arrived on the island towards the slight clearing. The spell starts out as she intended as the plants start to shrink and clear. Instead of stopping at the edges of a path, the spell continues to expand and the vegetation continues to shrink and thin in all directions. In a matter of moments, the plants all around on the island have started to shrink. In less than a minute, the entire island is no longer overgrown but instead has the appearance of a neatly and carefully trimmed garden with clear circular paths leading through the area. The plants are neat and even on all edges, almost creating a design as seen from above. However, where the spell did not take effect are the two large plants on the far side of the island.

There are two plants over 20 feet tall that now completely tower over the entire island. Their sharp edges and vines can be clearly seen with some spikes longer than a sword. Those plants weave and move, clearly without the help of the wind and almost appear to be moving towards the group gathered on the ground on the island, leaves and branches appearing almost to sniff the air around them. At the same time, Reggie spots a very small white flower on the ground at the edge of the trimmed garden, between the massive plants.

Notes: To try and paint a picture with words, since I have trouble drawing stick figures…

Imagine an overhead view of a roughly circular island, about 90 feet in diameter (this is why the diminish plants was so powerful, it’s smallest area of effect is a 100-foot radius circle!). The small white flower is just to the right of the center of the island. The entire left half of the circle is now a neatly trimmed garden with paths though the garden and low plants all around. This neatly trimmed area also extends around the edge of the circle for the rest of the island. The right half of the island is a clearing, inside the edges that are the neat garden now. Inside that clearing area, one near the top half, one near the bottom half, are the very large, sharp, thorny, and generally nasty-looking plants that were not affected by the plant diminish spell. Reggie and Jozhur are on the ground at the left side of the circle island, in the edge of the neatly trimmed plants, about 40 feet from the center of the island and 50-60 feet from the giant plants. Terser and Magana are standing on the air about 15 feet above those two. Aexana is flying around far above the island in the shape of an eagle. Rillett and Zeoll are on the opposite side of the water, to the left of the group gathered on (and above) the island. I think that’s everyone!

Aexeagle's eyes grow large as she notices the effect of her last spell... "now that's handy for doing the lawn!!", she thinks.

She lands on Zeoll's massive shoulders and tsjilps they ought to think of a strategy to deal with these giant plants...

"Check who needs some magical aid Zeoll... Barkskin, Stoneskin, Bull's Strength, Cat's Grace... you name it I tried to memorize the spells. Do you think a wall of fire or wind could create a free path towards the flower? And then of course my favourite... lightnings.

But why not consider talking to the plants? Who do they protect the small flower? Is it right for us to come take this sole white flower? What if it's the last of its kind?!"

Aexana flies down and lands on Zeoll. She offers spells to her companions. Rillett looks at the water and quickly decides to avoid it with magic. He whispers the words and he, Zeoll, and Aexana find themselves on the island on the island. Reggie eyes the white flower and considers making a run for it. As she does so, Magana carefully observes the large plants and see that they are indeed moving towards the party!

Rillett moves to cast a spell on the slightly unwilling Reggie, who accepts the spell. Zeoll decides all the casting is a good idea and starts casting his own summon spell. Jozhur watches Aexana fly upward and prepares his bow, also noticing that the plants now indeed are closing in on the party!

Meanwhile, Aexana flies back up into the air does not have far to go to begin speaking with the plants again. She talks to the plants about the flower, but this time they do not answer as they continue to move towards the party.

Notes: The plants have closed to about 60’ away. This would be a good time to make moves in combat round time frames…

Zeoll finishes his conjuration and calls an ally from the Wold's Cradle. The words he uses to close the spell are, as usual with this fey magic, not entirely under his control. He finds himself chanting "... so forrth frrom fairry lairr, I call the goodly AIRR!"

It seems a large air elemental has answered Zeoll's call. [OOC: As it is one step removed from the old liontaur's NG alignment, the spell has a duration of 20 rounds (double 10) and it will do as he bids, like a summoned monster or nature's ally.]

It appears between the party and the oncoming monsters, at J-K-9-10. The misty, muscular cloud creature lashes out with two slamming tendrils at its 10 ft reach. It hits AC25 and AC17, doing damage of 9 points and 8.

Zeoll, in the meanwhile, is wracking his brain to figure out, if he can, just what these plant-creatures are, and what kind of senses they have, and anything else he can recall. His Know Nature check is a 24!

[OOC: Zeoll still has his full actions yet to use this round, but I'm hoping to get the result of that Knowledge check before deciding what to do. Hope that's okay?]

Just before Aex took of she lightly touched Reggie's shoulder... Powerful magic washes over her as she feels her skin harden... (casting Stoneskin on Reggie - DR10/ adamantine - total of 100 points).

Up in the air Aex sees how the Giant sunflowers seem to aim for her friends.
Plants and Fire usually aren't a good match. Aex casts Wall of Fire encircling the Northern Flower. (due to Aex's Improved Natural Spell she casts Fire spells at -2 CL)

Radius: 20ft (5ft/2lvl = 5*(10-2)/2) - should be enough to make a nice circle around the flower. Stay as far away from the white flower as possible. The blistering heat from the fire rages towards the inside of the ring... scorching the flower... Flower definetely within 10ft from the wall thus takes fire damage: 4HP

Zeoll carefully and diplomatically places a large air elemental. Two large wispy arms fly out towards the approaching plant and one strikes true, scattering a few leaves from the plant. The leaves gently flow towards the ground. Zeoll steps up behind the elemental and strengthens its armor.

Rillett tries to speak gently to the plants, hoping to convince them of their folly. The one at the top calls back to him, “Get in muh belly!” Further conversation is cut off by Aexana creating a large circle of flames on the island. The fire leaps up from the ground, completely obscuring all vision into the area. There is a slight hiss as the edge of the fire slips over into the water around the island. Zeoll’s air friend slips backward, away from the edge of the fire.

Terser nods to Reggie and moves, waving at the other massive plant. As he tries to distract it, Magana flies past, yelling and swinging her flail rather recklessly. The flail nearly hits Terser as it slams through one of the neatly trimmed hedges in front of him. Magana’s flail hits quite solidly, slamming hard into the meaty stalk of the plant. The stalk of the plant is pliant, and the head of the flail bounces back and strikes Magana, drawing blood.

Meanwhile, Reggie and Jozhur head forward, making a dash for the small, white flower. The larger plant ignores them and Reggie reaches the flower. The flower is very small and looks quite delicate. The white leaves of the bloom are so thin to almost be see-through. Looking even closer, Reggie can actually see her hand through the petals. The flower has one bloom at the top and four small leaves around the stem.

Magana’s eyes grow wide as she sees an absolutely massive pair of leaves open up next to her. The leaves are ringed by large, long, sharp spikes. The pair of leaves open up and them slam shut again with Magana inside. The long spikes slice into her repeatedly, leaving long cuts and splattering blood all around the area. She can feel the leaves trying to pinch her inside them, but she manages to push them off before they close all the way around her.

As Jozhur stands guard, he is surprised when a massive plant bursts through the huge wall of fire, edges of the leaves slightly smoking and curled from burns. Another absolutely huge pair of leaves appears and chomps down at Jozhur. The leaves and sharp thorns slice into him deeply and before he can react, the two leaves close around him, completely encasing him in bright green leaves!

Rillett does not need his Status spell to know Magana and Jozhur have taken a lot of damage. This needs to end.

Rillett will cast Plane Shift, and use his Agile Feet ability to ignore the difficult terrain and move up to touch the plant near Magana. (Touch attack of 19. If this hits, the plant will need to make a DC 21 Will save or be transported to Koshe Marr where it should probably fit right in.)

OOC: As a point of clarification, the DM indicated that Jozhur was completely encased in plant material. For many creatures, such envelopment or ingestion happens the round following a successful grapple. If Jozhur was still exposed, Rillett would probably have used his dimensional hop ability to remove him instead of sending the one plant to Koshe Marr. Concentration check on using this spell-like ability is 31 against a DC 23 (Dimensional Hop gained at 8th level, so treat as 4th level spell for concentration check.)

Zeoll looks around carefully: Perception 32, 34, 42.

The old liontaur observes and calls out that the plants seem resistant to fire.

Zeoll himself moves 10 ft south and casts a Prayer spell. It won't give any penalty to the plants, but it still helps his friends: +1 luck bonus on attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saves, and skill checks. I think that also includes both CMB and CMD.

PLEASE NOTE THAT REGGIE AND THE ELEMENTAL ARE FLANKING FOR +2 TO ATTACK. (If needed, the elemental takes a five ft step to the right square.)

His large air elemental friend benefits from the magic, though. It slams the plant twice, hitting ACs 36 and 28 for damage of 9 and 10.

Terser moves first, yelling as he moves to attack one of the massive plants. The red in his eyes blurs his aim and he swings wide, completely missing the plant. Reggie, however, starts standing next to the plant and is apparently quite angry that the plant has just eaten her new friend. She explodes into action, smacking the main stalk of the plant again and again! The stalk splits and starts to tear, but the plant still holds tightly onto Jozhur. Jozhur tries to get out, but the plant’s leaves hold him quite tightly. Aexana spots Jozhur disappearing and decides to dive-bomb the plant, hoping that it won’t turn on her. When she touches it, she watches sections of the plant turn brown and wilt. An entire branch falls off one portion, but the plant does not release Jozhur.

On the other plant, Magana tries to shake off the damage of the giant spikes on the plant and starts swinging the flail again in all directions. It is a good thing that no one else is near as the flail flies all around, almost uncontrollably, tearing up and damaging more of the neatly trimmed plants. The flail does manage to make contact with the maw of the plant-creature, ripping a number of the thorns off with the blow. She also manages to use her horns to rip off a couple of the larger leaves nearby. Rillett takes a chance and runs up to the massive plant, hoping that it will not turn its barbs onto him. As he reaches out, he sees the maw of the creature turn towards him, and then he reaches out and touches large leaf. As he does, the massive plant very suddenly disappears, much to Magana’s surprise!

Jozhur: Highlight to display spoiler: {Inside the plant, Jozhur realizes that he cannot move and that there is no air. He can feel the edges of the plant moving around him, almost as if chewing him. Spikes dig into him as he wiggles (8 damage) and then suddenly there is a massive burning all around his body as acid flows around him, filling the small space with acid, burning him (5 damage) and squeezing him tighter (pinned)!}

Notes: Did I mention the AC of the plants? It is only 22.

Plant 1 (Top of map): : 97 damage

Terser – you’d need a move action to get to the plant, so I think you’d only get a single attack this round. Next round all bets are off!
Magana – first flail does hit, so 5 vicious damage for you.
Jozhur: Total of 47 damage, pinned by the plant, suffocating. To escape the pinned, you need a combat maneuver or escape artist check DC 32.

So is this how it ends? After all we've done and faced...eaten by a plant. Jozhur refuses to go down without a fight and continues to struggle through the pain. He finds he cannot get to his blades, so he again tries to wiggle himself free, but only manages to cut himself up worse.

He feels what he hopes is the plant being battered by his friends and can only hope they can free him in time.

Update:

Sorry about that, the last posts were made after I started writing the DM post and before I posted it (yes, it sometimes takes me hours to write the entire DM post).

The map was updated, Zeoll does get his prayer spell off last round, and the air elemental does hit twice, making the total damage on the plant 116.

Reggie continues blasting and tearing at the massive plant. After a particularly vicious blow, the plant suddenly stops struggling. The plant teeters for a moment and then the tall stalk starts to waver. It falls to the side, slamming into the ground, fortunately away from the group attacking it. The massive leaves surrounding Jozhur open with a sucking sound and Jozhur takes in a deep breath of air as bits of acid slide out of the leaves and onto the ground. Jozhur is covered in a light green slime from head to toe. The silence of the jungle and the heavy breathing of a few of the party members are the only sounds remaining in the area. The small, white, translucent flower remains at the center of the island.

Terser quickly realizes he has nothing about which to be angry, and his rage subsides, leaving him panting for a moment. Instead, he releases some healing for his friends, excluding the plant, though it seems thoroughly dead. No need to take chances though.

Relieved to see Jozhur freed from the dreadful plant Aex rushes over to help him. The little Gnome doesn't care too much if the green goo is poisonous or acidic still. Jozhur needs help... she'll deal with the rest of the problems later.

The Greenmage digs up several wooden flasks from her Bill's Pants of Plenty.

She pulls the cork of a wooden flask and without wait she quaffs its content in Jozhur's mouth... holding is nose shut to make sure he swallows the potion. She's a greenmage... she works with herbs... no one said the potions need to taste good...

The first potion heals Jozhur for 22HP. The second for only 18HP.

Then she says: "Before anyone touches that little flower over there let me talk to it please... "

He thanks the elemental and asks it to stay for the moment, in case there is more danger. Zeoll regrets that the Queen's plant had to die.

He asks Rillett if he can send such enemies to the Wold's Cradle in the future. "Let the crreaturres of naturre go wherre they will find a home."

As the giant plant falls, Magana growls in satisfaction and whirls to find another adversary. To her great frustration she can find nothing else to hit but does not want to release the rage either. She feels so powerful!

But then the healing from Terser and Rillet wash over her and the touch of Gargul's power helps her regain control again. With a deep breath of regret, she relaxes until the sound of blood pounding in her ears subsides.

She counts her comrades and is relieved to see they all made it through this time, and smiles in appreciation. She says a quick prayer of thanks to Gargul and seeing that Jozhur is being tended to, begins a careful watch for new dangers.

Jozhur is so relieved to be freed that he forgets his pain momentarily as the plant falls apart and he is released. He is then healed so promptly, the pain never returns. In fact, he looks as good as new, minus his tattered clothing and being drenched in acidic plant "stomach acid".

He is visibly shaking. If he's ever been rattled before, he has done a good job hiding his fear. He has clearly shaken by this. He looks to others gratefully, "Thank you all! I thought I was finished."

He gives each member of the group a big hug. He seems to be acting a bit odd, at least to everyone other than Reggie.

Once he calms himself down a bit he says, "I felt something strange...besides all the acid and teeth. I...I can't explain it."

Reggie's request for rum dawns on Jozhur several moments later. "No rum. But I do have this, some sort of elven stuff, it certainly contains alcohol." He pulls a rather fancy bottle from from his bag and extends it to Reggie. "It's not something I just drink, I've been carrying it around for awhile. Judging by the amount of plant matter spattered on you, I'd say I owe you a drink. Take only a small drink, I was told half a bottle killed a dwarf...or some thing lIke that."

In the aftermath of the battle, the group is quick to come to Jozhur’s aid, magically removing all signs of injury nearly instantly. Aexana forces him to drink some really horrible-tasting goop. Jozhur shares an interesting drink with Reggie as he realizes how close he came to dying.

Zeoll and Magana look around the island carefully. The island seems like the remains of a massive battle…which it is. The neatly trimmed hedges are trampled and crushed everywhere but at the very edge of the island. Leaves are torn and shredded in pieces, a few still floating in the air. The massive shreds of the huge attacking plant lie on the ground, half in the clearing but with the top half smashing a few more of the trimmed hedges. Bits of acid sizzle and burn some of the grass at Jozhur’s feet. Zeoll looks around for any sources of magic, but other than the party, he sees none. He squints as he looks into the sun that is just starting to fall behind the edges of the jungle hills.

Aex replies to Rillet: "Why is it so important? I don't know... but just look at it! Such a delicate flower... the only flower... and guarded by these two giant plants! It MUST be important!"

Of course the Gnome greenmage has no clue if this flower is precious or not but it can't hurt to be careful.
She kneels down next to the flower and whispers to it...

This does look like a witch's overgrown garden. Things could have gotten out of hand. Then again, Billoopl seems to always be a step ahead of us. He could have gotten wind that we were headed here and influenced some greenery to act against us.

Is there are way to find out if someone is spying on us by magic?

Zeoll tells Terser there is a spell he does not know that can detect Scrying. You cast it once and it remains active all day. But even so, his detect magic and his keen eyes probably would have sensed a magic sensor. So the old liontaur is not worried about magical spying.

Zeoll has known a greenmage in the past, and he is entirely confident that Aexana can prep the flower for transport.

Zeoll joins Rillett to Detect Magic on Jozhur, looking for charms and compulsions.

As soon as Aex is done, it is time to head back. Zeoll does not wish to lead the group around quicksand in the dark. He'll cast a Light cantrip, himself, and urges all the casters to do so.

If the flower doesn't respond too much Aex will not linger any further. She doesn't want to know what could happen if that plant that disappears is back suddenly...

Aex will use her sickle to dig some dirt around the delicate flower. Rather than just tearing it from the ground she will scoop up some soil along with the flower, not damaging its roots, and she will carry the flower home. This will allow Aex to replant the flower back home if possible.

Aexana starts talking to the small flower while the others look on in amazement. Listening very carefully, Aexana hears Highlight to display spoiler: {a slight humming. Looking more carefully, she can see the flower appears to be gently swaying and humming a light tune, oblivious to the world around it. } She carefully digs up the area around the plant and finds that the roots are as shallow as expected. She is able to dig up a small ball of dirt and pick up the flower with it. Highlight to display spoiler: {The plant continues to hum while Aexana lifts it from the ground .}

Rillett stares down Jozhur while Reggie shares a “drink.” Zeoll looks around and notices that the sun is setting and the journey back is likely going to be in the dark, since it took a number of hours to get to the island on the island. The group will have to decide if they want to navigate around the quicksand and through the jungle in the dark, or spend the night on the island. Those who are covered with quicksand and black swamp goo are not looking forward to trying to sleep while covered in muck, either on the island or anywhere else.

He will pull out a couple of items with Continual Flame cast on them for light. He will also pull out some food, and share with Reggie and anyone else that may not have any with them.

"You know, if anyone wants one of these," he holds out a ring with Continual Flame cast on it "I can make them for you tomorrow. It's not really fire, just light. Heck, I can put it on an arrow if you want."

Aexana prepares the plant for travel, while everyone else prepares to spend the night on the island on the island. Reggie looks forward to rum upon returning to Bonetown. Terser takes a close look around the island and sees a number of different birds flying around, almost as if returning to the area. Rillett one of the few unspoiled by the jungle, offers a little water to help the others clean up. Aexana says that she can clean one person of the sludge. Zeoll carefully looks around as he spins tales and watches Jozhur wander about the small island searching for something to burn. He returns with a couple green leaves and shrugs.

As the group settles in for the night, those who have not been able to clean up are quite uncomfortable. The night sounds in the jungle are different as well, and those so covered with goop spend much of the night scratching and rolling around, and little time sleeping. Magana takes the first watch and works to clean her armor while the others rest. During her watch, she sees a large, shadowy creature fly overhead, blocking out the stars for just a moment. She does not see it a second time. Terser takes the second watch. At one point near the end of his time he hears a rustling from an area across the small section of water. He stands and watches it carefully, but no creature makes an appearance. He wakes Jozhur and Zeoll for the final watch. As the thin rays of the sunrise are starting to make their appearance, Jozhur looks across the water and finds he is staring directly into the eyes of something that apparently has not moved and has been watching him carefully. As he moves to let Zeoll know, the creature blinks, then moves and disappears in a flash of leaves. Based on the amount of leaves and crashing through the brush, it was apparently a creature at least as large as a human, but all Jozhur could see clearly was a pair of yellow animal eyes.

In the morning, the sun rises to reveal a blue, clear sky. The heat is starting to rise already in the jungle, making it clear that it will be a hot day to be in the jungle…

Notes:

Those who swam through the water or fell in the quicksand who have not cleaned off will wake very tired and will have the fatigued condition until they get some real rest (or other magical removals of such condition).

For the return trip, I need a marching order and two survival checks from whoever might be leading (the quicksand is easier to spot, now that you know what you’re looking for, but let’s hope those dice are kind to you!)

The group decides to head back out of the thick jungle. The sun rises and indeed provides a good deal of heat. There is some relief in the shade of the trees and vines, but the humidity rises very quickly, making travel quite uncomfortable. The group starts out relatively clean with the water and the magic, and Rillett offers water walk to ensure the group doesn’t have to start out slogging through the black swampy water. Aexana takes to the air while Zeoll, Terser, and Magana push to the front of the pack. Jozhur brings up the rear while watching for large, yellow eyes.

With Aexana’s guidance and the remains of the path taken in, it is relatively easy to find the trail. There are sections that are grown over more than should have happened overnight, and the last quicksand location seems to be missing. A couple hours into the trip, Jozhur sees movement behind the party. He stops to look and sees a small deer jump across their trail and into the jungle. It disturbs a large, colorful bird that suddenly flies upward, almost crashing into Aexana. When it sees her, it quickly turns and dives into the cover of some short trees.

Just after mid-day the Magana steps out of the jungle and finds she is looking over the edge of the valley that is Bonetown. She breathes a sigh of relief as the cooler breezes from the sea blow up the hill, quickly starting to dry the sweat that covers everyone. The path is clear down into Bonetown and nothing looks out of place from the top of the hill. To the right, away from town, is the path that Goodie has mentioned that will lead to her house.

Rillet speaks to the flower as if it is a small baby. Aexana sighs and wonders if she will ever be able to explain the complexities of nature to her rather silly friends.

When the group reaches the split in the path, Magana turns to the right towards Goodie Bess’ house without a pause. The trail there continues along the edge of the jungle and the “beach.” Here the beach is much like it is in Bonetown – mostly black rocks and rubble. The breeze blows in across the sea, providing a refreshing change from the thick, hot, steamy jungle. The sun passes across the highest point in the sky and when the breeze lets up, the group feels the strong rays of the southern sun.

The path leads up and down some hills, the jungle looking impenetrable and the sea looking invitingly cool. There are a few places where the rocks thin out and there is a little bit of sand. About a mile from town there is a small stream that empties out from the jungle and into the sea where the group can stop to take a break from the sun and perhaps check if the water from the stream is fresh. There is not sign of Goodie’s hut yet, but the trail is still quite clear and the group feels like they are getting close.

Zeoll blinks in the sunlight as the group breaks out of the more overgrown area and into the day. He takes off and polishes his spectacles, then puts them back on.

The old liontaur thinks about talking with animals and plants. That's a gift the Queen can bestow. But his heart longs for music.

If no one takes care of it, Aex will transform back to her own Gnome self... grab the flower from Rillet's hands and makes sure the little plant gets some water and shade from the sun... Rillett is under a constant "Tongues" effect, so I assume either he understands what Aex said to Zeoll, or Zeoill relates the message.

"Hey Zeoll, tell Axe that if this stupid plan dies, it's not my fault. Come to think of it, the thing is already a ghost orchid.

"And why am I carrying the plant while we have a Greenmage flying around in the air. And why is the Greenmage named Axe. Don't Axes kill trees?"


Boy I hope this plant doesn't die.

Rillett will use water from the stream to water the plant, and will sprinkle some water on the leaves as well. Then he'll take a cloth from his pocket, wet it in the water, and put it around the base of the plant to provide some humidity. Finally, he'll remove his helmet and use it to shade the orchid as we walk.

We play weekdays. We don't play on the weekends. The reason for this is that some like to play from work rather than home. Also, we've discovered that people just don't tend to post on the weekends.

In all games, "consider" it Fri. morning until your DM completes his "Friday" post. In that same vein, "consider" it "Monday" for the rest of the weekend after your DM completes his "Friday" post.

As the group pauses at the water, Zeoll stops to sing. At the same time, Aexana drops down to take care of the small flower. Magana is loath to stop and continues watching the area. She spots a pair of dolphins a short distance off the coast. Reggie checks out the water and does not see anything wrong with it. She rinses her face with the relatively cool water. When Terser sees Aexana come down, his eyes go to the sky. He spots a few small fluffy white clouds, but nothing else in the sky. Rillett appears to be a little annoyed at the trip and the heat, but he does try and help take care of the plant.

After a short break, the group continues. A bit further on (now about two miles from Bonetown), the trail goes over a rise and ends rather suddenly at a small construction that you can only assume is the home of Goodie Bess. The shack appears to be little more than a few scraps of building material leaning up against a few trees, but you cannot really see the inside. There is a strange piece of metal that appears to be some sort of roof to keep the rain out. Out in front there is a small fire burning underneath a large, black cauldron hanging from a tripod of sticks. There are three figures huddled around the cauldron. The one in the middle is clearly Goodie Bess. The one on the left has dark skin and nearly white hair pointing in all directions. She has no nose and is missing part of her upper lip, so you can see her forked tongue. On the right is nearly the opposite with very pale skin, but also with thin, long, white hair in a long braid down to her waist. She has a long scar across her right eye and the eye socket has been sewn over. There are warts running along the edge of the scar and towards her nose. The three appear to be staring down into the pot and have not noticed you as you have come over the ridge…

Zeoll inwardly flinches at the signs of deformity. Mormally he would have pity for such as these, and maybe try to cure their afflictions, but he knows that these women have chosen self-mutilation as a source of their power, and it bothers him on some level.

Outwardly, he simply watches and observes, although his twitching tail maybe betrays some nervousness.

He keeps alert ... Perception 28.

He sniffs deeply, relying on his keen scent and his spell lore to tell him what is brewing, maybe. ... Spellcraft 23

"Ho! Goodie Bess!" Magana calls out as soon as she sees them, not wanting to startle them by approaching too close, too fast or too furious.
