A Few Curtains is All it Needs

DM RobC - "That way exactly Mack. That way exactly Armand"
Wednesday February 3rd, 2016 6:10:21 AM

Mack imagines charging through the woods carrying a lance. Does he secretly long to be a centaur charger?

Carver is happy to give the lance an untested go. If it's any better than his current one he'll soon find out. Based on the last combat, it couldn't be any worse :)

Owen is able to identify the remaining two objects
- A +1 gnarled, darkwood quarterstaff, fashioned from the leg of a fallen Timber Wight
- A +1 darkwood lance, fashioned from the unbroken spine of a fallen Timber Wight

He also sets his mind as to what could have caused all the death in the Culverwood. He doesn't spy any one aura in particular, but it does give the appearance of a few spells: Diminish Plants, Blight and Horrid Wilting would be the three top picks.

Mack states it quite clearly. Following that trail of destruction will not prove difficult.

Armand and Leskni look over the damaged goods. Even repeated casting of Mending and Make Whole spells won't fix the damage done. Ah well. The good DM giveth, and the evil DM taketh away.

Bendoc is happy to give the staff sling a try. It would also make a good memento of the journey.

Osul's survival skills here are exceptional. He is certain the trail leads in the direction the party are headed. Of course, that could just be purely coincidental.

What might be alarming to those unfamiliar with the Culverwood is that there is no sign of the trail the party took to get to this point. The landscape looks completely different. The only thing unchanged is the dead trees and plants ahead. The grasses nearby move like worms towards the deadened area, striving to regrow and “re-green” the patch. But as soon as the grass touches it, it too dies.

The Culverwood is a living organism, and the dead area is like a poison or disease consuming the healthy tissue.

Peculiar, Bendoc thinks as he realizes that the forest has changed. He moves to the front of the group and looks out for trouble. when he realizes his wolf is paying more attention to the dog and halfling riding next to them he whispers in Shadow's ear, "be alert." At some point in their tavels he remembes to look out for acorns and asks Osul, "Why am I looking out for acorns?."

DM RobC - "I've seen good before and I've seen bad too, this is way beyond bad"
Thursday February 4th, 2016 6:15:13 AM

Leskni leads the pack. She throws up Deathwatch every so often, but it doesn't reveal a single living creature. The only thing she picks up on is the aura of death.

Bendoc and Shadow come next. Osul has suggested he keep his eyes open for acorns. Without really knowing the reason why, he stays alert for them just in case.

Osul has taken the form of a dog for the day. Unfortunately having such a keen nose means that he can smell the rotting wood and dying plants all the clearer.

It does mean that Mack gets the chance to ride Osul-dog. He finds it difficult not to smile as he enjoys the experience.

Owen is shocked by the state of the forest. It is promising that the Culverwood moves so quickly to try and regrow. If the source or cause of this natural disaster can be addressed, there is a good chance the forest can repair itself.

Atlas stays close by Owen. He sees it as almost his duty to ensure the safety of the party wizard.

Mack looks about. Based on his knowledge of the natural world, the situation is definitely NOT natural. He keeps a close watch on the party rear and flank.

Carver brings up the rear of the group. He echos Armand's advice that the party stay alert. He suspects the party will see more undead before this trip is over.

The party notice a complete lack of any fey, and what's more, a lack of any type of animal. There aren't even any birds about. It makes the walk very depressing and quiet. Every footstep the snaps a twig is amplified.

The day passes uneventfully and leads into a starry night. There are significantly fewer trees, and even those that are about are dying and leafless. It allows the nights sky to be clearly visible for a change. Dawn breaks and sends the suns rays over the lifeless areas of the woods. Once again, any footprints or trail left by the party has disappeared.

All the travel the party has done doesn't add up to Osul. The Culverwood feels much bigger inside than outside. It's said that travellers often get lost in these woods, and with things constantly moving and shifting, perhaps that is the reason why.

...at the end of the day once Mack has dismounted and he has returned to his human form, he also informs Bendoc, or at least confirms the answer was passed on.

He takes the time to Detect Plants and Animals in search of their target maples, and again, with Bendoc's assistance preparing a note for The Emissary, casts Animal Messenger at a better opportunity to find a bird to whisk the note away. He understands this may be later the day given their current surroundings.

"We did Mack, it is just harder to discern the further you go in."
The travel is even more disconcerting. As a dog carrying Mack at 40', we were easily keeping pace with the next slowest member of the party. He reckons we should have covered half as much distance again on the second day as we did on the first, but that isn't how he is perceiving it. He double check to see if he is still feeling the symptoms (better or worse) that he was experiencing on the first day back in The Wood. {Heal? - eschewing the kit: 18} He expresses his concerns with the party, before taking the shape again of a riding dog.

DM RobC - "Woof!"
Friday February 5th, 2016 6:26:02 AM

Mack looks about, checking whether the party have moved. That is, have they been moving during the day and stayaing still at night. The lack of footprints makes things difficult to tell. But his sore legs tell him that he has most certainly been walking a LOT.

Osul barks a meaningful woof to Shadow. It is a woof filled with subtlety and nuance. It's amazing how that one simple word has conveyed so much to a trained ear.

At the end of the day Osul returns to human form. He translates his woof for the others - that slings and acorns are the favored weapons of many Culverwood followers. Then he casts a few spells.

Detect Animals and Plants is interesting. It reveals some 3 Maple trees at various distances of up to 560ft to the west - right through the dying area. The spell reveals them to be in a condition of "Weak".

The feeling of sickness hasn't quite passed. Perhaps he is feeling what the Culverwood is feeling? Armand determines that this is likely. It hasn't incapacitated or affected Osul in any physical way fortunately. The best news is that his condition is neither deteriorating nor contagious.

Armand asks some very good questions, and Mack has a good long think about them.

Is the decay spreading? Well, it doesn't appear to be spreading but neither does it appear to be healing.

Does the path twist or turn or is it straight? It twists and turns but follows a westward heading.

Leskni (very lady-like) 'marks' a few trees. Whether or not it helps them recover is inconsequential. She's curious to find if they move during the night.

Before settling down for rest she casts a Clairaudience spell directly west. It is dark, so she can't see very far through the magical sensor. Leskni Highlight to display spoiler: {You can see 3 dead and twisted maple trees in the immediate area. More lie in sight further to the west. There are no signs of animal life or things moving. The decay is still present}

In the morning Leskni finds that the live trees she 'marked' on the outskirt of the decay have moved away. The dead trees within the decay have stayed put.

Atlas is impressed with how well the party are working together. They aren't letting the current situation get them down and are cooperating to find a solution.

Bendoc asks the important question: how do the group even know they are heading the right way? Leskni's vision and Osul's spell would suggest there are some maple trees not too far off.

Carver's solution is a littler simpler. Just keep following the death and decay. It has to lead somewhere, doesn't it?

It doesn't take long for the party to reach the 3 trees that both Leskni and Osul detected. They are well and truly dead. The branches are bare and have already started turning grey. The trunks are hollowed and rotting. Where acorns might have fallen are instead small pellets of dark brown mush. If the smell is anything to go by, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to touch them.

The party continue their journey westward. Maple trees start to become more common until finally the trail of plant destruction leads the party to a wider area.

Ahead, surrounded on all sides by all this death - dead flowers, dead plants, dead trees - sits a small dilapidated stone cottage. In terms of size, it is perhaps some 15ft across and 20ft high? There are gaping holes in the thatched roof, the wooden door has fallen from its hinges. Yet small wafts of sickly green smoke occasionally fly from the chimney.

Surrounding the small house are dozens of dead trees that look much like the dead maples the party have already seen.

The party are around 400ft from the cottage, but from this distance it appears as if the decay spreads out in all directions from it.

There's quite a bit of discussion about how to proceed. Stealthily seems to be the consensus.

Mack is ready to slip away and investigate.

Owen suggests even casting an invisibility spell and waving a magical colourful stick for a signal.

In Carver's opinion, any sort of scream would generally work as a signal that there is trouble.

Armand is concerned about the local environment, and casts Detect Magic to have a look around the surrounding forest. He notes a lingering magical across the entire decayed area.

Leskni volunteers a message spell or a non-magical mirror to be the signal. Not to mention reducing the size of whoever is the brave scout.

Mack goes over his understanding of the stick-signal. One wave means safe. Frantic waving means trouble. No signal means he's died. Pretty simple.

Atlas keeps a watch on the surrounding forest. Just in case. He suggests Osul tag along. Safety in numbers and all.

Dog-Osul listens, wagging his tail happily. There are so many sticks around. Would dog senses take over if someone was to throw one?

The 'rustic' cottage amongst the dead trees lies some 400ft away from the party.

So what's the plan? How close do the scouts want to venture? Are the rest of the party standing in the open? Are any spells definitively cast?

Is there any cover for the rest of the group to get any closer, but still be generally "hiding"? Hmm... 400'. That's a lot of ground for everyone to cover if Osul and I DO get in trouble.

OOC Before proceeding I have some questions.
1 we are in a 'dead' area, as in are there dead leaves and sticks on the ground which will make for more noise should the non-stealthy, like myself, try to get closer.
2 Likewise I believe it was stated that there are no birds or small forest critters around, thus is ambient noise gone, also making a sneak that much harder.
3 What is the surrounding terrain? Are there trees to hide behind?
4 Does the decay in this area look like it has been around longer, ie are we at the source?

If there is cover for us to get closer...Armand would suggest casting Silence on a stone that Mack could carry. Then we close to 100' if there is cover and whoever is going in for further investigation can take the stone with silence with them. If they get into trouble they can either toss the stone away, or better toss it at whatever the trouble is before signaling the rest of us.

Armand will continue to maintain vigilance on the surrounding area. Perception 5, d20+4.

Owen casts Invisibility on Mack, and then edges closer himself.

Before he heads off, Armand then throws in a good suggestion re a Silence spell. (OOC: Does anyone have the spell prepared? Is it cast? I'm assuming so, so please someone note it as cast)

Osul is ready to go, sniffing the air and wagging his tail. He is still quite far from the house and smelling the smoke is near impossible. That said, he struggles to recall a sickly green smoke that smelled good.

Leskni offers to cast reduce person on any who want it (OOC: If you take Leskni up on this, please include it in your next post as an active spell effect on yourself) and looks for a safe place to stand.

Invisible Mack heads off towards the house with Osul-dog by his side. Mack has the magical colourful staff in one hand as he creeps along. He might be invisible (and silent) but he can feel his heart beating faster and faster in anticipation of whatever might happen next.

Osul can now smell something. The green smoke maybe? Whatever it is it smells as bad as the decay around them.

The brave pair edge closer and closer to the doorway. They may only be 10 foot away from the door, but can't see anything beyond the delapidated door. Literally. The door is barely hanging on by its hinges, but behind it all the pair can see is absolute blackness. Not darkness - blackness. An unmoving wall of 'black'.

But that's as far as they get. A creature of rotting wood and flesh rises from the ground - as easily as if it were water - in front of them blocking the entrance to to the house! Its body formed as much from earth and soil as from bones. The earth at its feet ripples and shudders unnaturally. Whatever this creature is it's skin doesn't have the same rot that an undead would. This creatures flesh is intact and merged with the plant-like features. (Highlight to display spoiler: {Readied action to 5ft step and block the path})

It's arms lash out at BOTH Mack-invisible and Osul-dog! (Hit AC22 and AC14. Mack takes 7pts damage and Osul takes 10pts damage. Both must make a Will Save vs DC16 or be cursed! The curse: -2 penalty on all attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks!)

The creatures humanoid jaws move as if it is speaking, and its eyes blink, but neither Mack nor Osul can hear it.

OOC yes, I had Silence in que (character sheet) so it would be cast on a rock for Mack.
Request permission to place Armand at BT19 to start, previously stated that he would cast shield of faith on Carver if combat erupted, so Armand would have to have been within touching distance.

Armand is amazed at the creature that silently erupts from the ground in front of the hut. He see's it lash out and strike 'Osul as well as it appearing to strike at empty ground. "Gargul protect your chosen." Cast Shield of Faith on Carver, +2 to AC.

Armand advances to BO19. He wonders how the creature could sense the scouts. Knowledge religion 23 (d20+5). "Guys, and Gal, I think this thing can sense the living. We're just a bright beacon of living energy to it, so there's no sense in sneaking."

I'm going to assume this thing is big enough that the others see it, and see it attacking us. And I'm also going to assume that I have the Silence Stone in one hand and the staff in the other.

(d20+8 will save of 21 against DC16 - SAVED!)

I can't 5' step to fall back OR flank, so I attack with a flurry of blows (no direct skin contact, since both of my hands are being used - if that matters).

(flurry of blows: d20+5 for each blow, and d4-1 damage
Hit AC 16 for 3 damage, and AC 25 for 1 damage)

I let my attacks take precedence, but if possible, I sparkle the staff and chuck the rock in any direction, and then let out the signal for Carver: "AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

OOC:
I'm both Invisible and Reduced if I was given the opportunity, although I need to look up both spells. Not sure of the benefits, and/or if the Invisibility wears off once I attack.?

At quick review of Reduce: +1 bonus on attack rolls and AC. Adjusted above numbers.

Armand instinctively casts a protective shield over Carver, and slowly advances towards the fight. Even from this distance he can observe that the enemy looks to know exactly where to strike the invisible Mack. Can it detect living beings? Based on his knowledge of all things undead, Armand doesn't believe this creature to actually be an undead creature - despite it's horrid appearance. More likely it is an aberration. (OOC: Armand can absolutely have started at BT19. Map updated)

Mack resists the curse and begins to fight back. His attacks are made with his feet, whilst his arms flail about - one moving the colourful staff about wildy, the other tossing the stone away (Normally a standard action, but hey...). One boot lands a soft blow.

Atlas throws caution to the wind. His friends are in trouble and he needs to get in there. He runs as fast as he can towards the fight.

Leskni also moves closer, firing an intentional warning shot *wink wink*.

Carver moves closer, but at a careful pace. This creature emerged from the ground undetected and with ease. Could there be more of them around?

Owen moves up whilst drawing his dagger. At least this time there's only one enemy. That has to be a good thing, right?

Bendoc and Shadow bring up the rear (DM moved them closer to the fight)

The creature attacks once more, throwing both arms towards Mack! (Miss AC13 - Nat1. Hit AC31. Mack takes 5pts damage and must make a Will Save vs DC16 or be cursed! The curse: -2 penalty on all attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks!)

With the stone of silence now out of range, Mack can now hear the creature speak! In a slow, raspy and pained voice: "Kiilllllll mmmmeeeeeeeee"

Osul-dog tries a few times to bite the creature, but his bark is worse than his bite.

Mack is happy to oblige this creature with its death wish. He does wonder if perhaps they should be looking for a way to save this .. abomination.

Armand starts running, shouting out to the creature. His lack of ranged weapons means he needs to get much closer.

Leskni moves up, firing her crossbow as she goes (OOC: Note that it is normally a move action to reload a crossbow). She asks whether anyone wants to be enlarged for this battle.

Carver moves up, but doesn't let his guard down. He doesn't notice any other creatures nearby, thankfully. His greatsword is drawn and ready for this fight.

Owen moves closer, and though he knows a great many thing, he doesn't recall ever hearing about such a creature as this. Casting Detect Magic he then looks ahead. Both the creature and the house have magical auras to them.

Mack is starting to feel really beaten up but not bad enough that he can't land some good blows! (OOC: 'Woodland Stride' would normally work, however this is a magical effect, so alas nope)

Armand moves to just within reach to safely channel some much needed healing energy to Mack and Osul.

Carver moves through the difficult terrain to now also be in reach of the monster (OOC: I thought you were only moving 65ft each round. I didn't realise you meant 2 x 65ft. To be fair I've put you one move away from the monster, meaning it can't hit you this round nor can you hit it, however you can move and attack next round)

Atlas feels the draining touch of this creature. He sluggishly attacks, and whilst his muscles might be weak he can still strike true.

Owen moves up and continues concentrating his focus on the magical auras. The aura around the creature is moderate, yet the aura around the entire house is strong.

Leskni moves closer whilst reloading her crossbow. At a much closer range she will have a much bigger target to aim at.

The monster is practically surrounded now, but it keeps on fighting. It attacks Atlas to the best of its ability (Hit AC31 and AC30. Atlas takes 11pts damage and must make 2 x Will Saves vs DC16. Fail either one and be staggered for the next round)

Osul-dog thinks on Carver's question for a moment. What exacty IS this thing? Parts of it are certainly humanoid, and parts of it are plant-like. It isn't undead, despite how horrid it looks. It appears to have some level of intelligence. If it is honest, then it also feels pain and some level of emotion. This could very well be the first time Osul has been in a fight with something that WANTS him to kill it. He rules out the possibility of it being a suicidal treant however.

Mack keeps up his assault, and even though he fails to land a blow he does keep the monster busy.

Atlas connects, and is guessing this creature is possessed. Likely the former owner of the house. In between whacking the creature (no, that is not a euphemism) he asks it a question. Who did this? "Elfffffff" is all that can be discerned from the monster's moans.

Carver feels no ill effect from the curse, and is able to path his own wounds very quickly. He urges Mack to step aside whilst thrusting his sword into the creature. Unfortunately, the difficult terrain means that Mack cannot take a step to the side without provoking an attack from the creaure. It also means that moving away from the creature could also prove hazardous.

Armand moves to within range to strike with his glaive. The party now have the monster completely surrounded! Still, it is not enough for Armand to break through its defences. (OOC: You said AG9 but I'm thinking you meant AG14)

Owen calls out what he has learned: both the creature and the house have a conjuration aura to them. It is unlikely the monster is under some form of enchantment or possession. Well, unless the enchantment aura is significantly weaker and clouded by the conjuration aura. Either way, he fires off a Ray of Frost but misses.

Leskni moves closer now and delivers some much needed healing to Atlas. The foul smell from both the creature and the sickly green smoke of the chimney tickle her nose, but do nothing more than cause her some mild discomfort.

Mack can't believe his ears. An evil elf? He continues his attack on the poor creature.

Osul reasons that not understanding the creature is no reason not to kill it. After all, it did attack first! Alas he just can't seem to get his teeth into it.

Armand prays for Gargul's aid and looks to receive it, thrusting his glaive at the monster. He even goes so far as to suggest the party attack the cottage!

Carver has less success this time around. He shrugs off the curse with ease, but the rippling ground throws him off target.

Atlas is finally able to finish the creature off, first with his sword and then with his shield.

Leskni and Owen are able to take a breath (and keep any spells they would have cast).

"Yessssssss......" the monster groans, with a hint of a smile, as it collapses lifelessly to the ground. It lays motionless between the party and the cottage - a pile of bones, flesh, wood and thorns.

Mack has a close look at the creature. He's a bit on edge and would no doubt jump if it so much as twitched. Alas, it is very dead. It looks like some demented human-plant hybrid.

Amongst it's wooden bones he discovers something unusual. Around the creatures head, covered in dirt, a gold headband that has started to tarnish.

Mack walks the perimeter of the house checking for traps. Despite his keen eyes, he does not see anything resembling any sort of trap.

Armand looks around for Bendoc and Shadow. He spots the pair circling the perimeter of the decayed area. (OOC: Dan/Bendoc is taking some leave from the Wold)

Armand channels some healing for those that are injured and then helps Mack examine the corpse. To the best of his knowledge, the creature isn't an undead abomination. He suggests throwing the rock into the doorway of the house.

Atlas looks about and sees a cottage, a dead thing, the party and some trees. That's about the extend of it :)

Osul sniffs and carefully paws at the dead body. He is convinced the creature is as it looks: a human/plant hybrid abomination.

Leskni is pretty much decided that the party will have to go into the mysterious cottage sooner or later. She casts Deathwatch and looks about. The creature radiates as "dead". Various party members radiate as either "Fighting off death" or "healthy". Neither the nearby trees nor cottage radiate anything at all.

Carver takes one look at the house and firmly declares it much too small for him. Looking about, he doesn't see anything else particularly dangerous. Still no creatures - friendly or otherwise - in the immediate area. The green smoke still comes from the chimney of the house.

*** The party receive 1500xp for their triumph!***

"Oh my gosh!!!!! That creature was Richard Simmons!" I say, as I pull off the headband...... cricket cricket. I move on..........
"Anyone know what this might be? Maybe it's a magical cursed item?"

I see if I can find where I threw that stone, and hand it back to Armand.

"Leskni, I think Carver just asked for a Reduce spell" :)

I'm pretty near all healed. Thanks Armand! I sign all of that, since Armand and I can no longer hear each other speak.

"hmmm." Armand studies the shack. What is it made out of, wood, adobe, straw? Perception 22, d20+4. Is there only one entrance, no windows, just eh door way? "Does anyone have skills in telling how sturdy this thing looks?"

Armand will take out Carver's ruined bow from the bag of holding. He looks apologetically at Carver. "Sorry, I think your bow is beyond saving...and I want to try something with something that is untainted, as it were." He will stick one end of the bow into the darkness of the doorway. If he feels any kind of tugging or pulling he will let go of the bow because he doesn't want to get drawn in. However, he wants to see what happens to something put through the darkness and then pulled out, it wit, does it look like it is aging/decaying/or dying.

He will then cast light on a stone and toss it into the doorway to see if it will illuminate what is beyond the doorway.

He motions for Mack to hold up away from the group with the silenced stone. "Does anyone have any other thoughts before we throw the silenced stone into the house? I still like the idea of just taking the building down from the outside. Whatever is in there will be more likely to come out and play rather than us try to go into such a small confining area."

Silence (on the rock) 30' radius, ?23 rounds assuming we moved up slowly?

Atlas walks around the cottage, contemplating. Armand, I couldn't agree more. I don't want to try fighting in that confined space. Especially without Carver to help us out.

"Besides, all signs are pointing to this cottage being the problem. No one has seen anything else that would say we need to leave here and go somewhere else to fix this problem."

Atlas pushes on the cottage some to get an idea of how hard it would be to knock over. When he does he notices that he still feels much weaker than he should. "Can one of you smart folks weigh on in this issue? I'm feeling as weak as a halfling and smart as a stump, and I don't know how to shake it. It feels like it is getting worse, but maybe I'm imagining things. Poison, curse, something I've never heard of? Anyone have a cure poison or remove curse spell to help a guy out? Anyone else feeling the same thing?"

DM RobC - "I'd prefer to remain outside unless it requires our moving into the shack....."

Mack reaches out and grabs the headband, much to the surprise of Owen! He can't tell if it is magical or not. It looks fairly plain, and certainly has been exposed to the elements. Inscribed on the inside of the gold band is etched "For Penn, my love"

Owen, however, casts a few spells to double check. It doesn't appear cursed, but it does have a magical aura (transmuation) to it. Unfortunately he's unable to identify exactly what it is at this time.

Mack starts disturbingly talking to the magical headband he found. So help me, if this becomes a quest about a halfling obsessed over a piece of jewellery...

Carver has no intention of going inside the little shack, and keeps up his watch.

Atlas walks around the cottage tries to get a feel for how hard it would be to knock the cottage down. It is stone and quite old, but with the combined efforts of the party it could easily be destroyed. Of course, if there were any innocent people or fair maidens trapped within they would be killed. But what's a little collateral damage between friends?

Leskni and Osul also walk around the hut having a good smell. Neither detect the presence of a creature in the immediate area. Neither can detect any scent from within the cottage. The green smoke is quite strong to those with the scent ability, and gives you a bit of a metallic taste at the back of your mouth.

Armand is quite curious about this non-descript derelict cottage. It is made of stones, piled carefully one atop the other. There are no windows to be found. The only entrance/exit/void is the doorway of blackness. With the bow beyond saving, he uses it to poke and prod at the gaping black doorway. There is no resistance or force required, and half of the bow slides easily into the blackness. It emerges in exactly the same way as it entered. No change in temperature, age, colour, etc.

Still curious, Armand casts Light on a nearby stone and tosses it into the doorway. The bright stone hits the blackness and disappears from sight.

Owen (who made a very good Knowl Arcana check) now suspects that this could be the doorway to an interdimensional space.

"Does anyone want to take a closer look at this headband, or should I throw it in with the party treasure for now? If we make it thru this, I'd like to try to return it to Penn."

"Hey, if you guys tie a rope to me and hold on to one end, I can go into the house and check it out if you want. Like Atlas though, I'm feeling rather odd (cursed) from that tree creature yet, though."
