Home Again, Home Again

DM RobC - "I agree, lets get home"
Thursday March 24th, 2016 7:35:51 AM

The party awake early and like little elves (you know, of the other type) they make themselves busy tending to the farmstead. Fenceposts and paling are fixed, hinges are oiled, weeds tended to. All the things that slipped by the wayside when Eleanor was tending by herself.

The group say their farewells to Faelyn and Eleanor. Faelyn is starting to look his former self. He shakes each of your hands vigorously, while Eleanor goes so far as to bow and try and kiss the hands of her heroes. Osul lets her know that if Faelyn's condition should ever deteriorate that the party can be found at the Tree of Parting.

Finally the party are ready to head back to the tree. The journey around the southern border of the Culverwood is certainly safer than venturing through it.

The days and nights are quite. The weather turns out to be glorious for spring. It's like the Wold itself is celebrating the work the party has done.

Close to 3 weeks have passed since the party last saw the Tree, and with only a few miles to go the party can see a pair of children playing in the middle of the road.

The boy (an elven lad of about 10) is the first to see you "They're back! They're back! The heroes are back!" he calls excitedly "I can't wait to tell everyone!" He turns to head for the Tree.

"Wait for me Renal! I wanna tell too!" the girl (an elven lass of about 7) calls after him, as she gives chase

"Come on Milly!" the boy calls back, slowing marginally but still ahead of the girl.

The pair are racing off at top speed towards the Tree.

Armand stops and fishes out the Masterwork Lyre from his bag of holding. Looking it over..."lets see, left hand here, fingers so?, and a one and a two..". Armand attempts to recreate a tune he heard long ago. Perform check 16 (untrained, d20+2).

When Atlas comes marching home again, Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give him a hearty welcome then, Hurrah! Hurrah!
The men will cheer and the boys will shout,The ladies they will all turn out
And we'll all feel gay, When Carver comes marching home.
The old tree leaves will rustle with joy, Hurrah! Hurrah!
To welcome home our darling centaur, Hurrah! Hurrah!
The village lads and lassies say, With roses they will strew the way,
And we'll all feel gay, When 'Osul comes marching home.
Get ready for the Jubilee, Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give the hero three times three, Hurrah! Hurrah!
The laurel wreath is ready now, To place upon their victorious brow
And we'll all feel gay, When Owen comes marching home.
Let love and friendship on that day, Hurrah, hurrah!
Their choicest pleasures then display, Hurrah, hurrah!
And let each one perform some part, To fill with joy the warriors' heart,
And we'll all feel gay, When Atlas, Carver, Osul and Owen come marching home.

Atlas smiles at the words from the children, "I don't know about you all, but I don't really feel like a hero. I hope this doesn't get blown out of proportion."

Atlas then bursts out in laughter hearing Armand's song, "So much for our egos. Still, it's a fun tune, well done Armand! It appears that we're going to have a welcome at the Tree. I wonder if Linus and Liana have returned from their venture to Centaur Isle."

As they approach the Tree, Atlas speaks up, "Personally, I want a bath and a good home cooked meal from Ciyradyl. Hopefully we can save the stories until tonight when we have a crowd. Anyone want to join me in the telling?"

Leksni bursts out laughing at the homecoming. Its nice to see people who are NOT in danger just living their lives.

"Bathing. As if getting wet is a good thing. Silly humans :-). But I agree, lets tell our stories AFTER we get a nice meal. With some good wine to go with it"

Personally, I'm I want to get clean, then treat with a unscented oil. I've used unscented oils for years, flowery scents can be smelled for a very long distance, I may not be stealthy, but I try not to make it easier, yoiu know."

Carver could have caught the children, there was no real need. The tree was going to hear of their return anyways so let the kids have fun.

"Good song, Armand!"
'Osul too puts thoughts of catching up with the children away... and only a mile out, it should be fairly clear they are in no danger.
I'll check on what messages have arrived from the Emissary, and what if any changes have been wrought by the Painting, and bring that to the discussion at table.

The children appeared to initially have the best of me, but as they slowly left me in their dust, a surge of energy coursed thru me. Suddenly, my entire little body lit up with energy, and I shot forward like an out-of-control comet, with a sudden 50% burst in speed, flying past the children, veering off the road, and crashing into the trees. I emerge from the brush with a slight glow, and appearing to have a new strength and speed from within. "Well, THAT was FUN, kids!" I say with a huge smile. :D

I head back to the group..... "Beautiful song, Armand! Had I not been chasing kids down the road, I would have attempted to join you with some music." :)

DM RobC - "I agree, lets get home"
Friday March 25th, 2016 9:12:10 AM

Owen chuckles on seeing the children, joking that they could be scouts

Mack tries to take a stealthy approach and sneak up on the kids. Then, throwing caution to the wind, he speeds past them, careening into a tree like an out of control carriage. The children are giggling and laughing at his antics, but don't stop to help him from his predicament.

Armand takes out his quality lyre and puts a few words to a tune. It's an impressive piece - even if he did miss a few members of the party from the lyrics. (Armand is awarded a hero point for his tune!)

Atlas just doesn't feel 'heroic'. But what does it mean to be a hero? Do you have to be heroic ALL the time - from the moment you wake up, to the moment you go to sleep? Or is it determined by 4 or 5 key moments in your life that are so significant as to thrust you into hero-hood? Whatever the case, all he really hopes for at this point is a bath and a good meal.

Leskni just doesn't understand this bathing thing. Linotaurs never felt the need to voluntarily submerge themselves in water for periods of time. But a nice meal and some wine? Who could object to that?

Carver offers some unscented oils for helping with cleaning. Anything too strong of scent could be smelled from distance after all.

Osul is curious if any messages from the Emissary will be waiting for the party.

Ahead by the base of the looming Tree, the party can see a small gathering of people. No more than a dozen or so. They are standing together clapping and cheering as the party approach. The attention is most certainly directed at the party!

"Another job well done!"
"We're lucky to have folks like them around!"
"Three cheers for the heroes!"
"I think I might get my hair cut like Carver's"
"Tell us! Tell us about your latest adventure!"

The Party are awarded 500xp. This should put you all to level 5

Atlas tries to shush the crowd with a wave of his hand signaling that it was nothing. However, he's eager to tell their story, so he can hone his story telling abilities. With that on his mind, he says as they walk by, "We'll be in the tavern tonight if you want to hear the details. After dinner though, don't get in the way of my home cooked meal or I'll have to add you to the story!"

When Atlas finally manages to get cleaned up, he hunts down Mack. "Before dinner, lets see if we can get this curse removed. The chapel?"

Leskni (Paul Jackson) AC: 15/14/11; HP 35/35; CMD: 16 Character Sheet  d6=6 ; d20+5=18 ; d20+5=25 ; d20+5=19 ; d20+5=9 ;

Yay. Up a level. And even rolled max for my hit points :-).

"I believe that I may now be able to cure your curses. If the fates smile upon me"

If the chapel can't do it, once a day, Leskni would try to remove curses. Starting with Carver, then Mack, then anybody else who is cursed. Caster level checks 18, 25, 19. 9

She'd then ask around trying to find some other witches to form a temporary coven (she needs to get a coven together to activate her 5th level power). If there aren't any locally, she'd travel to wherever she thinks that they would be located (take 10 on diplomacy to gather information on where this might be for 22)

"I hope that we are selling at least some of the items. I need to buy a cauldron and broom :-)"

Leskni needs to buy a masterwork medium cauldron. This is 500 gp for a normal one, I'm guessing 550 for a masterwork?

Oh, also buys a broom :-)

Leskni would practice flying, but away from curious eyes as she'd be embarrassed for others to see a linotaur flying clumsily. Closest picture that I could find was :

When Atlas approaches me about the chapel, "I was hoping a bath would wash the curse away, but you're probably right. It sounds like Leskni might want to experiment on us first with some of her new powers though. I'm always for doing what I can to help someone try out new things. :) I think let's see if she can help us any first. If that fails, we can still try the chapel."

A small crosses my face as I imagine Carver running around with normal boots on. :)

Party Treasure

OOC: I threw my name on a few of the items on Party Treasure. Is no one else REALLY interested in anything on there? I plan on throwing money on to cover anything I'm taking off. We need to get a final check on there for who wants what though, so we can sell the rest of the items, and let everyone spend their share. Please put your name on there if interested in an item (or let me know and I'll mark it), or if you think something should stay on there even just for general Party use (like Cure items and such).

IC: Owen spends some time alone, studying and thinking of his home, his wife, and his son. The others may not feel so heroic, but he knows how great a change the group has wrought in Faelyn and Eleanor's life together. Would that he could do the same for his own family someday....

Perhaps when I've had time to rest and pray tomorrow, Gargul will grant me more favor (level up) "and I will be able to try to remove your curses as well."

OOC Mack, Armand does not need any of the treasure at this point, however, I agree the bag of holding needs to be kept as party item, and don't sell the ring even if no one wants it right now.

2 potions of remove fear
potion of endure elements
potion of hide from animals
potion of hide from undead
potion of pass without trace
scroll of cure moderate wounds
scroll of neutralize poison
robe of bones
druid's vestment
wand of faerie fire
wand of endure elements
standard alchemy lab

Bendoc had the Darkwood Staff Sling +1, so I assume we just take that as a loss as his share. ;)

-------------------------------------
Atlas tries to calm the crowd, waving his hand as if the whole thing was nothing. He is keen to tell the story of the party and suggests after dinner might be the time.

Leskni believes that she is now suitable capable of treating all manner of curses and diseases. All it will take if Carver and Mack to have a kind of bath in her cauldron. (OOC: Can you please email me and let me know what you need the coven for?)

Carver waits for the noise of the crowd to die down before he considers what the party should do with the loot they have found

Mack is also in favour of having a bath courtesy of Leskni. It DOES mean he will have to have the bath in her cauldron. With her watching over him. For at least an hour. One imagines that the halfling would want the water to be very warm.

Owen looks forward to spending some time alone. The encounter with Faelyn and Eleanor has made him a little homesick.

Armand gracefully acknowledges the crowd. He might not be used to people greeting him in such a manner, but might have to get used to it if the party keeps growing in fame.

The party retire to their individual rooms to wind down from the journey.

Armand and Owen each find a set of winter clothing awaiting them in their rooms. Each set has been masterfully crafted from wold pelts as promised by Theon.

Carver finds a large wooden shield on his mat, along with a note...

"Dear friends,
I returned from Centaur Isle but you were not here. I received your message about the copse of trees. That is wonderful news that they are healing again. I shall venture there myself just to be sure.
The crisis with the Whistal trees was nothing serious. A little root rot caused by some unrelated toxin. All is well now though. I told Stallion Pholus of the work you were doing. He allowed me to take some of the dead Whistal tree wood with me. I hope it is to your liking. Until we meet again. Liana Breezefinder"

The shield has been fashioned from a naturally fallen Whistal Tree limb. The dark surface has been polished and has a large tree etched into the centre of it. Carver knows full well that Whistal Trees are sacred on Centaur Isle. To have a shield made from the wood of one is quite special. Importantly, it was permitted by the Stallion. (OOC: Treat as a Masterwork Darkwood Large Shield)

In the afternon Ciyradyl knocks on each door to alert you that you have some visitors awaiting you in the tavern.

An elf, a human and a half-elf have walked into the bar (No, this isn't the start of a bad joke).

They stand near one of the tables, rather than sitting.

The elf (a male) has brown hair and gray eyes and is dressed in very fine raiment. He is talking very quietly to the other two.
The human (a female) is also dressed in very nice clothes. She has silver hair and light green eyes, and very prominent ears. Not like an elf mind you, but for a human they do stick out somewhat.
The half-elf (a female) isn't dressed the same as the others. She has silver hair and light amber eyes, and wears worn clothing and riding boots. She is currently scribbling madly in a large book as the elf is speaking.

Ciyradyl bows to them as she walks past "These are the heroes, your honor"

The elf stops talking to look at the party. He smiles warmly and opens his arms "On behalf of the Council of the Emerald Kingdom, I wish to thankyou for the work you do - and continue to do - in keeping the Tree a safe and prosperous meeting place, where all are welcome"

The human and half-elf nod along, smiling.

"If it is no bother, might you be so kind as to sit with me a while?" he gestures to an empty table

Atlas, immediately notices the new shield Carver has, "My, my, my, now that is a shield worth having." Atlas reaches out and runs a hand over it, assuming Carver doesn't mind.

When the elf speaks up at the tavern Atlas looks them up and down once to get the gist of him and the others. "I'm Atlas, and at first glance it seems you need something. We happen to be the types of folks that help others out, but do you mind if we have a meal first? Or you can talk during the meal, that is fine, but we've been waiting a long time for this meal and I would hate to wait longer." Atlas frowns a bit after that though. "Also, we promised these folks a story. We don't want to offend our hosts, so to avoid a bar brawl, I suggest we keep with the plan. If your news is going to change that then it can wait until the end. If not, then you can bend our ear over dinner. Deal?"

Those that know Atlas know that he's not big on authority figures. His treatment of them is usually in a way that instigates trouble. He will push them when he can just to get a rise, even if it is at a cost. In the end, it's all just a game to get them a little off bearing so that they cannot jump in and make him their puppet (again).

Atlas mentally prepares to tell his story after dinner as he waits for the others to arrive so that they can eat. (ooc: roll below...as I'm not sure when I'll get to roll and I don't want to miss it)

Upon being introduced to the the visitors, Carver is distracted by the thoughts of a good meal, in fact his stomach rumbles very loudly.....
"I agree, business can wait a bit, Food first, a story because we promised and then we can deal with new business, unless they know of imminent danger, if that's the case, they look awfully calm for something so dire."

Mack is quite shy bathing in front of Leskni. There is a big size difference after all between halflings and lintoaurs. Not to mention the lack of fur.

Osul bows, and the tunes out to whatever might have been said next. He's aware - much like everyone else - that the Tree of Parting sits halfway between the Emerald Kingdom and the Kingdom of New Elenna. The Emerald Kingdom is nestled within the Culverwood, whilst New Elenna is in the hills to the east.

Armand introduces himself, advising that he too is from the Emerald Kingdom. The elf's eyebrow raise and his smile gets that little bit broader. Unfortunately Armand has little idea who this man might be.

Owen would be happy to join the man. Once he introduces himself of course. Like Armand, he is finding it hard to collect his thoughts.

Leskni introduces herself and proceeds to sit down. She welcomes the invitation that has been offered.

Atlas introduces himself, but then suggests that these folk might need to wait, or, if they are happy to, talk whilst the party eats.

Carver is in agreement. Food first, and the story he promised, and THEN new business.

The elf smiles and looks to the human "Do you hear that, Joane? No sooner have they returned than they are already looking at how they can help others once more!"

"Friends - if you'll permit me to call you that. You misunderstand!" He takes a seat at the table, and once he is seated, the two women he is with also sit down.

"Ah yes, introductions. I am, of course, Counsellor Coni Diamonddew. You have probably heard of me. I am the elected head of the Council of the Emerald Kingdom"

"This - " he says gesturing to the human woman "- is Joane Diergel. And this - " he says gesturing to the half-elf woman "- is Eryn Raulnor. They are but two of my trusted assistants"

"Now then, I am not here to seek your help or assistance with anything. Quite the opposite in fact. There are things I would like to offer YOU."

Cousellor Coni pauses and reclines in his chair.

"The 'heroes of the tree' are developing quite a reputation. The work your party have done - not only recently, but since arriving at the Tree - is appreciated by many good and honest folk. Though it is but a small gesture, tomorrow evening we will all celebrate your accomplishments with a feast! We would have planned it for tonight, but weren't aware exactly when you would return. The supplies arrived days ago, and we have just been waiting.

But that is just a small gesture for what you have done. We would also like to offer you a permanent residence here at the Tree. We can't have you living in the tavern all the time now!

You see, people feel safer knowing that you are around here. You being here makes folk smile a little more, makes them care a little more. It's like you're... you're.."

"A positive influence?" Joane interjects

"No, no, that wasn't the phrase I was thinking of but it will have to do" Counsellor Coni sighs with a smile "Obviously the Emerald Kingdom would prefer you to reside closer to our boundary, but in fairness to those in New Elenna, perhaps being based nearer the Tree would be more fair. The cost of construction will be covered by the Council. You need only come up with your requirements and it will be done. You want a house in a tree? You want a modest shack at the base of the Tree? It's up to you. Eryn, here, will be glad to note your requirements and we'll see to getting it built"

Not being real excited for another party where we are at the center of attention, I try to slip out. However, I don't want to appear rude. And I DO want to stay for Carver's songs, and Atlas's story telling. So I do my best to blend in somewhere.... probably a corner.... eating a turkey leg with a little mead. :)

I definitely perk up at the talk of having a permanent residence here at the Tree though. I love it here, and it would be fantastic to have a little place here to permanently set up my alchemy lab, and have a little herb and flower garden. I know Owen also mentioned starting a library, and if I may so humbly offer my services, I'm definitely interested in assisting him with that in any way I can. I could be the person that shushes everybody.

When I get a free moment, I duck over to the Catacombs to sell a few of the items none of us were interested in.

As Atlas eagerly devours his meal he listens to the elf chatter on. In between bites he attempts to cotinute the conversation, "So, you're a dignitary sent to entice us to stay at the Tree, or maybe even feel us out to see if we wanted to move closer to the Emerald Kingdom. OK, that doesn't sound too bad. Thank you for not being pompous and demanding about it, it is a nice change. Although you can certainly lose the flowery talk, you're talking to adventurers, not people at court."

Atlas continues eating and listening, then after a swig of his drink he continues, "Personally, I have grown to love the Tree and the people here. I would welcome a permanent residence. If the others agree, then I'm open to talking about specifics. In particular, what exactly are you offering? Do we each get our own residence, or are we expected to have a single residence for all of us? Also, I would like to have a place for us to do business, a place where we can meet, where we can store our group treasures, where we can start a library and document our deeds. A guild hall or something like that. Is that something the Emerald Kingdom would be willing to help out with?"

Atlas looks around the table, "Don't be shy, there's potential here for us to do good for a long time. Look at this as an investment into our health and well being so that we can continue to help the good folks around here. I know I'll be better prepared if we have a more tailored environment to prepare and train in."

Atlas goes back to eating, but then his head jerks up, "Oh, and I don't want another feast in our name. We're people just like all the others around here, not some grand duke or someone that needs to be flattered and coddled. However, I don't want your preparations to go to waste either. Why don't we find something to celebrate for the people. Has there been any weddings, change of seasons, anything other than us that we can celebrate?"

Armands eye brows shoot up. "Well that is ...certainly ....um...an interesting offer." His eyes dart around to the others at the table. His father had to deal with the city bureaucracy at times and they never gave something for nothing. He wonders what Diamonddew is not saying. Sense motive on what Diamonddew is up to. roll is 25, d20+10

Diplomacy 25, d10+9 Armand tries to continue the conversation without committing to anything. "That would certainly be something we'd all have to discuss. Um...what about the inhabitants of the tree, how do they feel about this?" Armand tries to think of ways to stall for time without committing to anything. He can't remember, isn't there someone in the tree that is like a mayor or something?

'That offer is very generous. As my friend says, we will need to discuss it, to decide what would best meet our needs as well as yours. For example, it would have to house very different kinds of people with very different requirements. What kind of total budget are we looking at?"

'Osul says nothing for now on the topic of a new residence. The only image in his mind is a cage, and he suspects giving it voice may offend. The idea of hiving themselves off without or within The Tree seems counterproductive, particularly in mind of the picture they have long since brought back, and given at least some of the people of The Tree would appreciate us for being on hand and accessible.

Fortunately, another long term notion displaces the cage. "We were going to establish a grove... an arboretum in a nearby... I was discussing this with Mack before the Red Hills..." He casts a glance about the table and a little further for Mack, but on realizing he is absent, 'Osul chalks it up as a conversation for later.

He just relaxes and drinks some more wine....

DM RobC - "Would your grove have a shrubbery?"
Thursday March 31st, 2016 7:13:42 AM

Atlas enquires about the specifics. Do they get one house each? DO they have to share? What about a hall?

Armand is intrigued by the offer. Whilst he isn't one to look a gift horse in the mouth, neither is he one to trust anyone in the bureaucracy. He suspects there might be more to it that meets the eye, but he gets a good feeling from this Counsellor. He doesn't sound like he is hiding anything, and appears to be answering the party's questions as best he can.

Mack stays quiet, but enjoys a turkey leg smothered in gravy.

Leskni considers the offer to be very generous, but agrees that the group might need to think about it privately. (OOC: Those would be the same dice Leskni previously used to attack with her crossbow. Send them to the fires of Mt Doom!)

Osul considers a grove or arboretum. Mack is wholeheartedly in favour of that, although Armand questions whether they will have a shrubbery. Or two?

Carver isn't fussed about the current residence, but would prefer something a little closer to the ground. Centaurs weren't meant to climb trees after all.

Owen decides that so many questions have been asked that it would be to be silent on the matter.

Eryn is hastily scribbling notes in her book as each person talks.

Counsellor Coni smiles to Atlas. "Well, there is obviously going to be a limit to our budget, so the preference would be to construct one place of residence for you all to share. It would also serve the purpose of being a central place people could turn to for help"

"As for the feast, you misunderstand. It IS for everyone here. Though part will be to recognise your groups achievement, the remainder of the festivities will be to celebrate another successful year of trading and prosperity"

The Counsellor can sense the Armand isn't fully comfortable "Ah. I think I see what is going on here. To be presented such a gift you are wondering what we might ask in return, is that it? That you would be indebted to us for some unnamed favour? I confess, there is more to this offer than just a house" The Counsellor pauses to signal for a round of drinks for the table "You see, ever since you 'heroes of the tree' started developing such a stunning reputation, trade is at an all time high. People feel safe to come to this point of neutrality to conduct business. And business is good. It might cost us in the short term to build you a permanent residence, but the long term security and prosperity will more than cover it. I swear to Ffloy himself, there is no more to it than that"

To Leskni, the Counsellor smiles "Let's not worry about the budget. We want to provide you with something fitting of your stature, yet keeps with the current surrounds. Creating many houses and halls would not fit with the atmosphere here, I'm sure you'd agree. A modest house would probably be more accepted by the community. We would help you furnish it too, of course"

"Plants!" The Councellor claps his hands together at Osul's suggestion "Yes! That's the ticket. Create more nature surrounds. I like it. And a shrubbery! I like the laurels particularly. Ni.. Excuse me. A small tickle in my throat" He takes a sip of the water as it arrives at the table. "Eryn, make sure there are plants."

The half-elf woman continues scribbling in her book. Joane (the human) just sits there with a forced smile on her face. Being around a bureaucrat all day, one suspects she does this often.

"At LEAST 2 shrubberies, just to make sure we're covered if any strange knights come questing for them." :)

I like all of these ideas floating around. I'm not sure how Osul feels about it (and I ask him when I get the chance), but I definitely want to help with a lot of the planting of seeds and saplings. There's nothing quite like the joy of watching something like a tree grow from year to year when you've started it yourself.

The party start discussing the finer points of what their new establishment could/should look like.

Osul tries engaging Joane in conversation. "Joane Diergel. Charmed." she says, offering her hand to Osul. Osul notices that Joane doesn't appear bored, but in fact, tired. He can see faint bags under her eyes. Nothing a good nights sleep wouldn't fix.

Leskni tries to speak with the aides separately to see what they think

Eryn is caught by Leskni as the half-elf goes to the bar to settle the tab. Leskni notices that Eryn keeps an impeccable record in her book - every copper piece is accounted for "The Counsellor is very conscientious when it comes to spending money. With the rorting that is common place in most bureaucracies, he wants his office to be above reproach." Leskni then casually pries as to what Eryn thinks of the proposal "It had been discussed at some of the council meetings not too long ago. Many members felt that if the funds were coming from the Emerald Kingdom that the residence should be notably closer to us. Counsellor Coni make the strong case for it being at a neutral place. You would be hard pressed to find a more diplomatic or honest man"

Joane is caught by Leskni on the way to the ladies room "Miss Leskni, honestly, it's an honour to meet you. Please understand that the Council have made up their minds as to gifting you a residence. The Counsellor had to convince quite a few people on this though. Refusal on your part - even a polite one - could have a diplomatic impact not just between you and the Counsellor, but between the Counsellor and others on the Council." Joane sighs "I'm sorry. It's been a long ride to get here. I don't mean to put you in a difficult position"

Carver and Atlas then make a point about asking the Tree whether such a construction would be acceptable.

Counsellor Coni looks genuinely confused by the discussion "Forgive me, but, when you say asking the Tree do you mean asking the ACTUAL tree? I wasn't aware it had any sentience"
