To Billoopl’s Temple We Go

[DM Hugh] - A Sailing we go
Tuesday March 29th, 2016 1:46:35 PM

(OOC: Everyone please take 8321 xp from the last scene!!! ; Also if you have catacombs transactions that are pending; they will be delivered to the Lionfish and you will have them for whatever comes next)

Reggie is waiting on the results from the catacombs.

Zeoll reveals that the choice between the ghost ship and the Lionfish was revealed by the divine to be a coin toss. He advocates taking the Lionfish and consults with the brothers. He also gives a sermon to the crew of the Lionfish regarding the fey. (OOC: Someone remind me of this bonus if any of the crew need to make a save) He also lobbies for hazard pay for the crew.

Terser is waiting on the gold tally.

Jozhur returns from the catacombs with a skull splitting weapon and gives his approval of hazard pay.

Rillett gets into a debate with the Liontaur about the name of the group, indicating a preference for Black Lions. Rillett also sees to the matter of the gold, the signet rings and ensuring the crew is paid and that Yaas is tithed to.

The signet rings are indeed ready and Rillett is able to pick them up.

Magana asks about the other captains getting their share. The chests on the ghost ship were stocked to the brim with ill-gotten plunder and there was no shortage of coin, gems, art, magic items and munitions to go around. All of the crews were generously compensated from the spoils for their efforts.

Aex smiles as Zeoll and Rillet debate the name of the group. Aex surmises that they never outright chose a name and that the 320 mile trip they will be embarking on would be an appropriate time to do so. After all facing a God is not something one simply does everyday so there is a chance that some or all of you may not be coming back. Best pick a name so that you can be remembered correctly in song...

You leave at first light the following day. It is a near perfect day to set sail. The sun is shining and there is nary a cloud in sight. You even catch sight of some dolphins off the starboard bow. You have 3 days and a watch to travel the aforementioned 320 nautical miles. You may spend those 3 days crafting, helping out on the Lionfish, praying or preparing however you want...

Reggie wasn't too concerned with a proper name. she was the new comer here for now and the name should be befitting of all of their past adventures.

Reggie instead get to work as an able bodied crew member.
{profession sailor check = 28}

She also continues to check on the sturdiness of the repairs that were made. She knows that the work was pretty much done right, still it never hurts to check now that the ship is at sea again.

{craft ships check = 16}

Terser spends his time getting to know their new crewmember, sharing stories over drink, showing him the ways of their ship, and certainly picking up some new tricks from the much more experienced sailor.

Jozhur is sure to listen in on Zeoll's tales of the Fey.

He then begins assisting with preparations, wanting to hasten their departure.

Magana the Tauress (Craig) [HP 112 of 112] [DR 1/-]
Wednesday March 30th, 2016 3:28:22 AM

Magana lounges in the sun, taking the opportunity for some rest and relaxation and drowsily listens to her comrades take about their places in the bards stories. She *would* like her family to hear her tale even if she will never see them again.

...did you hear the one about Magana and the Defenders of Bonetown.... Magana and the Black Lions.... The Pride of Pearl Island.... Magana's Manglers (she snickers at that one).... the Bonetown Guardians.... Warders.... hmmm... not too bad, that one.

With her eyes closed against the bright blue sky Magana says, "I know 'The Black Lions' has been informally adopted, but I'm not sure it defines us very well. What about 'The Warders of Pearl Island', or something similar? 'Black Lions' just doesn't seem like it would stick in someone's memory. *I* even have a hard time remembering it."

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC25 HP 59 of 59)
Wednesday March 30th, 2016 7:28:22 AM

Zeoll tells Magana he thinks "Grey Lions" would be a better fit. He too contributes 100 gp to the ship crew pay, and stows 6K gp for a rainy day. (sheet updated: hero point, gp, xp)

He looks around for the Dolphin and Seabird he charmed. How many of the 9 days duration is left on the enchantment? He hopes his charmed friends will stick by the ship.

With idle hands, Zeoll remembers when he used to craft magic items. He had a very fine cloak he made for himself once upon a time. He thinks maybe he should take a refresher and pick that up again. At least he tops off the charges in his staff.

Watching his friends, he sees that Reggie is quite the sailor. "Wowsy," he says to her, "you have some mad shipside skils, my dearr!"

Aex snickers at Zeoll's suggestion to make it the Grey Lions. True... several in the group can be considered oldtimers already. The Gnome lass too isn't one of the youngest but then again her herbal infusions and Gnome magic have 'preserved' her well...

"How about 'the nameless'... pour some mystery over a group of nutcakes and they may all fear us some day...", Aex laughs.

[DM Hugh] - 1 day down 2 days to go  d10=3 ;
Wednesday March 30th, 2016 1:48:08 PM

Reggie isn't too concerned about picking out a name for the group. She instead sets to work on the Lionfish, helping with the sails and the rigging as the ship sets underway in earnest. She also double checks the repairs made after the last battle and finds that things are still ship-shape.

Terser spends his time getting to know Sarl. He shares a drink with the Old Salt and learns about some short cuts he was not previously aware of between Bonetown and Plateau City, not that those short cuts are of use currently.

Jozhur listens to Zeoll's faery tales and then helps out as best he can.

Magana spends her time lounging on deck. While she daydreams her mind goes through several potential names the group could call themselves. She suggests the "Warders of Pearl Island" as an alternative to "Black Lions" as the Tauress herself has problems remembering it.

Zeoll responds to Magana's suggestion with a counter-offer of "Grey Lions" He also contributes 100 gp to the crew fund and keeps the rest of his earnings for a rainy day. Zeoll looks around for his dolphin and bird friends he charmed and finds to his surprise that the birds have decided to roost in the crows nest and the dolphin was one of those spotted off the starboard bow. It seems that his dolphin was part of a pod and they don't want to leave their podmate behind. Zeoll is reminded of when he used to craft and makes a mental note to take a refresher course at some point in the future. He also tops off his staff. The liontaur is impressed with Reggie's prowress as a sailor.

Aex snickers at Zeoll's suggestion of Grey Lions and has an opinion of her own. "How about the nameless" she offers, arguing that it gives the group an air of mystery.

The weather holds for the rest of the day and you pass the time in an almost idyllic fashion. Weather you get to know the new crew member, show of your skills as a sailor or just relax and enjoy the ride, while you debate the name of your group.

As the sun slowly sets on the horizon the crew rotates as the night watch takes their positions at lookout, manning the helm and the sails.

Tula's at the helm, Horrace is in the crow's nest and Tommy Teeth is in charge of the sails.

Joansie prepares a passable meal of a fish stew with some hardened biscuits as those not on the night watch prepare to dine.

It is night time on your first day of the journey to Billoopl's temple. You will sail through the night because you have ample crew for the night's watch, though thanks to Reggie you may have covered slightly more distance than you thought you would, currently estimating that it will probably take you 3 days and a half watch to reach the vicinity of Breaker's Isle. How do you wish to continue going on the first night of your journey? Do you set a watch of your own, sleep or do something else?

Rillett (Bradley) HP 87/87 - AC 29/15/27 CMD 20
Wednesday March 30th, 2016 4:19:26 PM

Rillett, will spend part of his time penning a scroll, but most on deck, speaking to the crew and the Black Lions. He will defer to Jozhur's as captain, and is impressed by Reggie's ease aboard a vessel.

As the topic of the group name comes up, he fishes through his pocket and pull out a journal that seems too big to have been in his pocket. He flips through the pages.

"You know, Zeoll and Aex, we discussed this issue of a group name before. Some of the options back then were, let's see here. Ah, here it is. We considered:

Bonetown Heros
Coer's Corsairs
Magana's Myrmidons
Rillett's Rangers
Tersor's Terrors
Sailors on the Sea of Fate
Gargul's Special Forces (Tagline: We put the "special" in special forces)
We Who Judge the Quick and the Dead
The Edge between Life and Death, generally shortened to just "The Edge"
The Grey Council
The Boners
The Lion Guard
The Middle Sea Saviors/Sentries/Sailors/Corsairs/Privateers?
Lions
The Black Lions
The Onyx Lions
Melanite Lions

"Now, beyond a clear decision that we will not be called 'The Boners,' everyone was quite passive, so the Black Lions sort of stuck. At least until Zeoll decided to finally voice an opinion on this and call us the Lionfishers. So, we have some time here on the ship. What say you, how shall we call ourselves?"

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC25 HP 59 of 59)
Wednesday March 30th, 2016 5:03:40 PM

"Oh snap," says Zeoll. "Look, I' m old and a little morre than somewhat old. Don't hold it against me that I'm a bit slow on the drraw sometimes. So anyway, everryone likes 'Lionfisherrs,' rright?"

"It's a good one seeing as ourr ship is the Lionfish, natch."

"Plus we got a flag, rright? And just look at these grreat rrings Rrillet got forr us."

It's prractically a done deal. We got signets and everrything."

"Oh yeah, I forgot to give these to the rest of you." Here's the design.

Rillett will hand out a silver signet ring to each member of the Black/Grey/Chartruse/Fishing Lions - or whatever we call ourselves.

Magana the Tauress (Craig) [HP 112 of 112] [DR 1/-]
Thursday March 31st, 2016 1:26:08 AM

Having snoozed in the sun most of the day, Magana will handle the night watch. She continues to ponder an appropriate moniker for the company, and by dawn she thinks she has a good one to present.

At breakfast she says, "You know, that symbol on the rings could also be called a chimera, a generic definition of which is 'an imaginary monster compounded of incongruous parts'. I would say this also describes us, a grouping of incongruous individuals into a fearsome whole."

"C.H.I.M.E.R.A. Champions for Heroic Intervention against Maritime Enemies, Regimes and Aggressors"

"We could change the words of the acronym of course, this is just my initial thought, but think of it! If we accepted other crews into this organization, their ships could be renamed into another chimera like the Lionfish. The Wolfwyrm, The Tigershark, The Eelbear... well that last sounds silly, but you get the idea. What do you think?"

(Brock) Jozhur AC23/ Touch 16/Flat 17--CMD 24--HP63/88
Thursday March 31st, 2016 2:28:26 AM

"Well if 'The Boners' is out... I've always liked 'The Lionfishers', though Magana's idea is quite clever."

Jozhur thanks Rillett for the rings, "Well if this don't make us look all official..."

He also counts out an additional 100 gold to be paid to the crew as a bonus for their bravery.

OoC on Watch Schedule: As for watches, we should at least have someone up at night and on the deck. Assume one of us is on duty on the ship's deck at all times. Aex remains in the back with the whole names discussion. Not voicing her opinion Aex ponders the matter. Looking at the signet rings she does understand the Lionfishers but it just doesn't have a ring to it. CHIMERA does sound cool. It's just that she remember some of the names of notorious adventurers that became member of the Dragon Consortium... the Emerald Talons became the Emerald Dragons... the Gold Dragons... and there were more. Usually they had a colour or material in their dragon names. The Shadow Guardians sadly never made it into the Dragon Consortium as they were disbanded but perhaps they would have become the Shadow Dragons... The lionfishers... CHIMERA... Black Lions... all good... none good enough...

"Maybe, at some point we'll do something remarkable that our name is given to us rather than us forcing a name into the history books... Who knows what'll happen in the temple of Billoopll... maybe we will find out name in there..."

[DM Hugh] - What's in a name
Thursday March 31st, 2016 1:46:09 PM

Rillett spends some of the evening working on a scroll. He pulls a list of names from his pocket from a previous discussion the group had. The only consensus from last time seems to be that no one wants to be named the Boners.

Zeoll hides behind his advanced age before arguing that the flag and signet rings that Rillett had made favor the name Lionfishers.

Rillett hands out the rings after being prompted by the Liontaur.

Magana having spent the night on watch comes up with the acronym C.H.I.M.E.R.A. or Champions for Heroic Intervention against Maritime Enemies, Regimes and Aggressors. She even suggests that if their single ship becomes a flotilla or an armada they can give themed names to other ships that join up.

It would Jozhur seem that Jozhur potentially liked Boners but with it being nixed, the rogue reveals his preference for either Lionfishers or C.H.I.M.E.R.A.
The man thanks Rillett for the rings and contributes to the pay of the crew.

Rillett points out he needs little sleep and will take whatever watch is required of him. He laments the fact that Hashamon is no longer part of the group as the Morphling probably would have enjoyed the C.H.I.M.E.R.A. moniker.

Aex hangs in the back of the name discussion. She thinks that none of the names have the certain ring usually associated with a dragon consortium group should they ever be invited to join. She suggests tabling the discussion for now as maybe someday they will do something truly remarkable and name worth.

The night passes uneventfully. After dawn, the weather for the second day of traveling looks to be a duplicate of the first. The sun is shining, Zeoll's birds are in the crow's nest and a strong wind is blowing you in the direction you need to go.

The dolphin pod looks a little winded from their traveling keeping pace with the ship, however as the dolphins don't have sails in the way the Lionfish does.

How would you like to spend your second day on board the ship?

Zeoll keeps a keen eye open as the ship sails. Perception 42, boosted by cantrips.

He hopes the dolphins do not get too tired out. If they look exhausted, he releases his friend.

He asks Rillett and Aex, "You folks arre rready to cast Waterr Brreathing, rright? Because the whole ship is going to be pulled underr waterr -- we hope -- and down, and we do not want to be caught by surrprise."

{ooc: sorry about yesterday, out all day and most of the night. anyway, not sure If Reggie gets a ring as I don't think she was a part of the crew when they were ordered. its ok either way though, as not being a slave is good enough.}

Reggie simply follows orders from her Captain. it is apparent that is what she is used to. During the day time hours, she continues her work as a part of the crew. motivating fellow crew members and sharing her knowledge of "piracy" with them.

unfortunately paying a crew is not a concept she has quite grasped, and is a little reluctant to offer gold to the crew. it is apparent that it isn't anything out of being mean or stingy, its just not something she has ever dealt with.

If The Captain places Reggie on a night watch then she makes sure she has time to rest before her watch. but a sailor's life isn't all lounging, there is always work to be done.

It would seem Reggie's time as a slave has made her somewhat of a workaholic. constantly looking for things to be done, and ways to keep the ship, well, ship-shape.

Terser makes sure to share his new chart information with Johzur and Tula, so they get recorded on the charts for future use. That is if he remembers it all clearly enough through the haze of drink and laughter. Otherwise, he is content to listen to the banter of the others deciding on their names. At the mention of Hashamon, he also reminisces about Sam, and knows that he would have had a name more clever than anything proposed so far, and raises on drink to his health, wherever his travels have taken him.

Magana starts the day as the last, intending to lounge in the sun. She soon finds she has had all the R&R she can stand and looks for a sparring partner instead.

"Terser? If you are up for it, how about we get our blood warmed up?" She unscrews the spikes from her flail and replaces them with a thick binding of cloth.

As Rillett hands out the silver signet rings, he can see that Reggie lags back, not wanting to presume to warrent a ring. Rillett will hand them out to all but Reggie, and after seeming to have left her out he will make a point of going up to her and handing her a ring as well.

"Reggie, I know that all you've known in your life has been servitude and slavery, and not much of family or belonging. But you should understand that we are your family, and that you belong here. Well, if you'll have us, that is."

Later, in response to Zeoll, "I will certainly memorize Water Breathing. I always do when at sea, as well as Water Walk should it be needed. But what makes you think this ship will be pulled beneath the waves? There is a limit to how many I may be able to get to with the spell."

Not really being one to boss people around, and also being a relatively novice sailor, Jozhur actually delegates almost all of the day to day running of the ship to Tula. He always pitches in and does his share of the labor aboard the ship.

Jozhur gasps a bit a Zeoll's comment. "I hope the 'Fish doesn't get pulled under. She isn't made for that, and all of our things will be waterlogged."

When dawn breaks Aex spends some time meditating her spells. Like Zeoll suggested Water Breathing is a must have on her list! Something to control winds and water sounds interesting too. Fire based spells sound pretty useless if they go under water...

When her chores are done aboard the Lionfish Aex transforms into a Dolphin and enjoys the silence beneath the waves, racing perhaps with other dolphins... just enjoying that proverbial calm before the storm. Somehow she fears that's all true right now...

Zeoll says, "What was it that old sailorr said? ..." Zeoll scratched his mane. "Oh yeah, he said that they climbed down the anchorr chain to the sea floorr. How did I get the idea that the ship would get sucked down into the deeps? Well, anyway, sounds like we'll be able to anchorr the Lionfish and then swim orr climb orr sink down on our ownlies."

"And he said it was past 'Breakers Island.' That rring a bell with anyone?" Zeoll's own trained Know Geography -- boosted with a cantrip -- is a 24! Sweet! Maybe it rings a bell with the old liontaur!

[DM Hugh] - Chores
Friday April 1st, 2016 8:19:38 PM

Zeoll keeps watch and with the clear weather he can see a long way in the distance, but there are no threats to be found.
He does notice his dolphin friend flagging so he releases the dolphin and his pod swim away.

Reggie keeps busy doing the work of crew. The former monk is an exemplar of maritime efficiency. She is assigned to the day shift and when she has time shares tidbits of piracy tips with the crew.

Terser shares the tip regarding the shortcut to Plateau City with the rest of the crew, making sure it gets added to the ship's charts. Upon hearing of Hashamon's name he reminisces about another former companion Sam and raises his cup in a toast.

Magana has had all the lounging she can stand and wraps her flail in cloth challenging Terser to some sparring.

Rillett takes his time passing out the signet rings to his group. After everyone else has theirs, he makes it a special point to bestow one to Reggie. He tells her that they are her family.
He also lets Zeoll know he is preparing water breating.

Jozhur delegates most of the day to day to Tula but helps out with his share of the chores. He is also leary of the Lionfish being pulled under as the ship isn't built for it and it would make all their stuff wet. He also raises the magical flag and tears a strip from it working it into his wardrobe.

Aex spends some time meditating on her spells. Per Zeoll's suggestion she prepares water breathing, she also prepares spells to control the winds and the water but forgoes fire. After Aex's chores are done she spends some time as a dolphin and plays around with Zeoll's charmed friend pod before they swim away. This respite may be the proverbial calm before the storm.

Zeoll remembers Sarl's story of riding the anchor chain down to the bottom of the sea and then realizes they won't have to worry about getting the Lionfish wet hopefully.

He wracks his old mind for a clue regarding Breaker's island and remembers a tale he was told long ago as a cub. The Isle of Breakers was named for the treacherous reefs surrounding it and that great care will be needed to make sure that the Lionfish navigates to the shore in one piece.

The second day passes much like the first. The Lionfishers / Black Lions / C.H.I.M.E.R.As or whatever you want to call yourselves pitch to help where they can. Some peel potatoes, others swab the poop deck. Tula has Jozhur make himself useful by having him man the rigging.

It seems that Tommy Teeth wants to take Magana up on her offer to spar and the expert / warrior despite having the battle enthusiasm of a half-orc is no match for the minotauress and Tommy Teeth takes a wood nap.

The sun sets on the second day and it seems like you will need to make up for Tommy Teeth's absence as he will need some time to recover.

You have a little over a day sailing until you get to Breaker's Island, you should be ready.

During the night Aex spends some time outside as a bat flying around the masts and between the rigging and sails. Clear sky and a lovely moon... the reflection of moonlight on the water and the white foam at the bow of the Lionfish almost make the greenmage forget the task at hand.

Reggie accepts the ring from Rillett with a tear in her eye. She excuses it away before putting it on and whispering a weak "thank you." She then takes to the rigging, skillfully climbing the mast.

Magana casts healing on Tommy Teeth.

Aex also tends to Tommy, making him a salve and some tea. She also resolves to not get on Magana's bad side. During the night Aex spends some time in bat form flitting between the masts, the rigging and the sails.

Jozhur continues assisting with the ship, after scratching Slayer of the Dead into his new mace. He agrees with Rillett that their undertaking to slay Billoopl will lend them some name. He also makes it a point to make Reggie feel at home.

The weather holds for your third and final day of travel. Tommy Teeth is healed thanks to Magana and Aex's efforts and he rejoins the rest of the crew on rotation.

Around the half watch mark on the third morning, you hear Pinny Liz yell "Land Ho!" from the rigging.

Terser shares a light workout with Magana and then suggests that Aex do some scouting while they ready a launch.

Reggie starts taking some depth soundings, concerned for the name Isle of Breakers.

Zeoll draws the attention of the rest of the party to the glowing symbols on the map pertaining to Tempestas. The Liontaur tries to get a feel for the weather and realizes that there is no storm brewing for now.

Rillett agrees regarding the launch suggestion. He then ponders the meaning of Tempestas.

Jozhur ponders the meaning of what Zeoll pointed out and then queries Sarl's memory. He orders a landing ship and turns his gaze over to the island.

Aex congratulates Zeoll on his perception. The gnome green mage is of the opinion that they need a good storm to follow the instructions and that the symbols didn't start glowing for nothing.

Magana cautions Reggie regarding the monkeys she spotted.

Jozhur tries some of the fruit, but is otherwise puzzled by the map, the compass and the island. He stands watch while the others puzzle over the map and compass.

Aex takes a passing interest in the fruit but focuses heavily on the map. She points out that the map should function like a powerful scroll. She states that if they can figure out how to activate it, they will summon a huge storm.

Zeoll eats some of the fruit and helps the ship prepare for the coming storm.

Rillett hands the map to Jozhur, before explaining how it works and confirming what Sarl and Aex had to say about it.

He then outlines the plan to gather fruit, activate the map and head back as Sarl's mage did all those years ago.

Before they leave Rillett walks over to Reggie with his bag of holding and helps her gain fruit for the crew. He thanks her for her contribution and outline what the map does.

After gathering the fruit Rillett and Reggie return to the rest of the group. Rillett takes the map in hand and says in a commanding voice, "TEMPESTAS!"

The symbols on the map start to flicker and a red electricity starts to coalesce around them before condensing into a single beam of red lighting that departs the map and shoots up into the sky.

Coer, Pinny Liz, Sammy Straight, Joansie and Too-Elt are also having difficulties with the slick ropes and the sails tear a little bit as you don't quite tack enough to compensate for the strength of the wind.

Reggie's hair stands on end as the sky opens up and a bolt of lightning streaks toward her. (make a DC 15 Reflex save or take 19 damage; take 9 damage if you succeed)

Another bolt strikes the 'fish but the ship took a fortunate roll this time and the damage was less than it could of been. (OOC: 'fish made the save)

Cato is frantically trying to repair the damage dealt to the Lionfish and he shows what a master craftsman he is as he improves the situation with the hull.

Zeoll, Reggie, Jozhur Highlight to display spoiler: {You would say that you are a third of the way to your destination.}

Condition of the 'fish:

27 damage to sails

Things are looking increasingly dire, but if you keep it up you can pull through.

Magana sees the rigging tearing and reaches out to pull some lines and ropes in. However, she forgets some of the basic rules of rigging and grabs the wrong rope! As she pulls the rope free of its rigging, a roll of rope at her feet suddenly and quickly uncoils, wrapping dangerously close to her feet! (Reflex save, DC 15 or entangled in the rope).

Rillett struggles to remain on his feet. He looks over and spots what Magana is doing, but just a moment too late as he watches the ropes twist and twirl in the howling winds. He manages to recover and grab a sail before it whips around and takes out an eye.

Jozhur should encouragement to the crew, but slips on the deck and nearly slides toward the side of the ship. He grabs one of the ropes in the rigging to right himself and manages to pull another sail the correct direction to keep it from more damage.

Zeoll stands in the wind and complains about him lumbago, but simply isn’t sure where to help as the ship rocks and turns. He yells to more of the crew, encouraging them.

Aexana moves to help the crew. The crew seems to be getting in one another’s way and the water starts to rise quickly in the hold!

Terser knows that there is simply nothing natural about this storm. Only great power could have created a storm like this. Storms much weaker than this have taken down ships more mighty than the Lionfish! At that moment, a flash of lighting interrupts his thoughts as a bolt heads his way! (make a DC 15 Reflex save or take 20 damage; take 10 damage if you succeed).

The wind continues to scream and pound the ship and everything on it. It seems like the storm is actually focusing just on the ship, ignoring the world around. And right now the storm seems to be winning. It feels like the Lionfish is on its last legs and may not make it because the storm just doesn’t seem like it is going to let up any time soon.

Magana avoids the rope, but drops to a knee, slipping on the wet deck. She manages to get back to her feet, but not in time to do anything about the twisting and tearing sails all around her.

Rillett continues to struggle and slides across the wet deck, slamming rather uncomfortably into a main mast. At least he found something to grab on and didn’t slide into the water.

Aexana tries to help with the pumps, but has trouble keeping the pump moving. Fortunately, the crew inside manages to keep the pumps moving a little, enough so that the water going out seems to at least match the water coming in!

Jozhur tries to reel in some ropes and rigging, but it is torn out of his hands. One of the crew tries to help him, but the crewman slips and just manages to keep from sliding overboard.

Reggie heads below to help with the pumps.

The Lionfish rides over a large wave and settles into the trough with a solid crash, but facing the right way, avoiding massive damage. Those on deck can see the large wave rising in front of the ship, preparing to crash over the bow. Meanwhile, the rear of the boat is at the high point and lightning strikes with a crash, splintering railing and decking at the rear.

Zeoll makes a very feeble attempt at the sails. He slips and slides around the deck, having absolutely no idea what he is supposed to do. He tries to look around the ship to determine the state of the ship, but in the raging storm, he really just has no idea. It looks to him like the ship is about to sink at any moment. He tries to decide if his spells will work and he guesses that mending might be useful, but it is going to be nearly impossible to actually cast that spell in this incredible storm…

Terser, unbeknownst to him, is having some of the same thoughts as Zeoll. He tries to find a way to help, but he really doesn’t know what to do. He tries to follow the lead of the crew and lend a hand where he can, but he can’t really tell if he is doing any good or is just getting in the way.

Aexana works with the crew and considers casting a spell to help out. She knows, however, that any attempt to cast a spell is going to be incredibly difficult in these conditions. While they cannot feel the wind inside the ship, they can hear the wind howling and the rain battering the ship as it rocks from side to side. This time Aexana and the crew are successful, and she can tell that the pumps are pumping strongly, at least for the moment.

Jozhur tries to work with the crew, but the crew manages to hold the rigging for the moment without his help, tying down a few more loose ends. He tries to call out to Zeoll, but in the howling wind, he cannot tell if Zeoll was able to hear him.

Reggie works her way back to the deck to help out, but is momentarily disoriented by the storm and the spinning ship. Spinning? Is the ship spinning in a whirlpool now? Reggie looks around and sees nothing but black clouds, driving rain and flashes of lightning. Yes, bright flashes of lightning, headed directly at her! (Reflex save DC 15 or 15 damage, save for 7).

Terser moves over to help Zeoll, but as he moves towards Zeoll, another massive flash of lightning appears, stopping his progress (Reflex save DC 15 or 16 damage, save for 8).

Magana manages to grab some additional rigging and tie it down, saving some sail and tying down some rope before it is driven over the side.

The storm continues to toss the ship, seemingly without end. The timbers of the ship bend and creak all around. Bits of sail whip in the wind, creating a new danger. The rain continues slashing at an angle across the ship as the ship turns and twists. The crew are calling to one another, but it looks like the crew is starting to lose this battle simply because the storm, and the sea, seem endless…

The ship twists and spins in the water, the waves crashing into the side of the ship. The wind continues to howl and your ears hurt when the massive thunder crashes blast, seemingly right next to you.

Zeoll sets his feet and concentrates on mending the ship. It is difficult, but he does see a cracked railing mend back together, just before another wave crashes over the railing, nearly knocking Zeoll off his feet. He starts singing, but with the strong winds and pelting rain, he cannot be sure if anyone else can actually hear him.

Rillett sees what Zeoll is doing and decides to follow suit. He also carefully considers a few places where railings have been blasted and he wills the pieces of wood to mend together. He manages to get the end of a railing back together just as another blast of lightning strikes the ship, completely destroying the railing he had repaired. He calls out to the crew, trying to encourage them as the ship rolls side to side.

Magana slips and slides and dodges the rope. If she can’t figure out how to help, at least she manages to not make things worse.

Terser moves and slips away from a lightning bolt that blackens the desk where he was just standing.

Jozhur works with the rigging and manages to shift a sail and crossbar into the wind, where it should be.

Aexana is starting to lose hope, but tries and tries to keep working the pumps. The water continues to flow in through large holes in the side of the ship and the crew tries, but seems to be losing the battle against the endless sea.

Very suddenly Aexana and the crew inside notice the ship starting to right itself. The rocking of this ship seems more gentle, as if the ship is simply riding over the waves and not slamming into them.

Those on deck are nearly blinded by the quite sudden appearance of a very bright sun. Blinking into the sky, you can very suddenly see a clear blue sky! The rain and wind have stopped completely and the crew stands around, dripping onto the soaked decks. The clouds have cleared. The waves still continue, but even they are reduced and less violent.

Looking around the ship, you can see black walls of clouds and rain. One wall of clouds is moving away from the ship, but as you look around you can see that there are walls of blackness, clouds, and flashes of lighting in the very violent storm in all directions. Yet where the Lionfish stands now is clear and the air is strangely completely calm. The only sound is the creaking of the timbers of the ship and the soft dripping of water off everyone’s body. Sails are in tatters and rope is scattered about the deck. There are railings missing and cracks at places on the deck of the ship.

Below decks, the crew has redoubled their efforts on the pumps and the water seems to be lowering. Two of the crew appear with tar and wood to attempt to patch the holes to continue to reduce the water entering the ship.

He makes himself useful by trying to patch things up in the rigging and sails as the group discusses what to do next.

While Jozhur looks to patch up the ship, Rillett patches up Jozhur. He pulls out a wand, preferring to save his channeled energy for when greater healing is needed. Jozhuris healed for 22 points.

"My friend Terser, if you would expend one of your channel energies that should top eveyone off, including any of the crew that got banged up in that storm."

Rillett looks nervously at the deep water. He then turns to the old sailor that sold them the map, "So, is this where you and your crew descended into the depths? How did you do this?"

To out half-orc crewman, "Hey Pinny, would you take a sounding to see how deep it is here?"

DM Jeff - The Calm
Tuesday April 19th, 2016 9:04:28 AM

The air is calm and quiet. The sea even starts to calm and the waves lower. The sound of the thunder recedes, but the flashes of lightning can still be seen in the edges of the absolutely massive storm. Looking closer now, you can see the clouds of the storm tower to incredibly heights, the like none of you have seen before. No wonder that storm was so powerful.

Magana is the first to react to the calm. She calls out for Pinny to head up to the crow’s nest and report. Pinny looks carefully at the mast and pulls on it, making sure it is going to stay put before starting up the rigging, carefully placing each hand and foot, testing to be sure there is enough in place to allow a climb without falling.

Reggie stands a moment, shocked by the sudden appearance of the eye of the storm. Knowing her way around the ship, she quickly gets to work repairing and setting the rigging and trying to nail in and repair boards and railings where she can.

Terser stays below and works to repair the ship, helping the crew. The crew manages to quickly stop the incoming flow of water and the pump is working quite effectively now that the ship is still and the water is no longer coming in.

Zeoll slowly finds his way to his feet and looks around. He sees the injuries to Reggie and uses a scroll to help remove those wounds. He considers helping Terser as well, but he is below at the moment. Zeoll takes a look around. He sees water and he sees the edges of the storm, but something just doesn’t seem quite right. Looking even more carefully, he notices that the edge of the storm is no longer moving. While the ship is completely surrounded by walls of clouds, rain, and storm, those walls seem to have completely stopped, leaving the ship in the center of the eye of the storm. When he looks over the railing, he can tell the current is not flowing and the ship and water is completely still, but the storm is just as still.

Jozhur looks around and checks the map. Rillett joins him at the map, casually using his want to heal him. He calls out to Terser, not realizing that Terser is still working with the crew in the hold of the ship. They both look at the map and ask Cato if this is the place. Cato replies, “Welm,” while scratching his head and looking out over the water, “you know I just cain’t be for sure.” Looking at the map, however, reveals that the figure of the ship sits directly over the “X” on the map.

Pinny reaches the crow’s nest and starts to look around as Rillett calls out for him to take a sounding. Pinny looks down at Magana and shrugs. He calls down, “Tis clear to the storm, nothing but clear, calm water all the way there.” He turns and squints and continues, “Might be a shark to the port, but there be nothing else to see from here.” He starts climbing back down to work on the sounding.

Hanging over the bilge pumps Aex comes to the realisation that the storm has stopped and the boat is now on gentle waters...

"The Eye...", she sighs, "...we made it... great work lads!"

Tired she scales the ladder that takes her on the deck with her friends... she looks rather pale and looks around to take in some of the damage the Lionfish took. Full of admiration for her friends she stands with them. Insignifficantly small and somewhat seasick.

"Through the Eye into the temple... how do we get down there? Do we throw the anchor out and swim down?!?"

DM Jeff - The Calm
Wednesday April 20th, 2016 10:56:19 AM

The calm remains. It is almost strange how calm and quiet it has become. Each footstep on the deck can be heard. You can hear the conversations between the crew belowdecks working on the patches. The wind is completely calm despite the massive storm brewing just a short distance away.

Rillett asks Sarl about his last trip there. Sarl replies, “It was a long time ago, you know. We had some kind of powerful magic folk with us, I’m sure they did something to get us down. A couple did grab onto the anchor to help ‘em get to the bottom, that was a hoot.”

Zeoll suggests some spells. He tells the crew to watch for their return. One crew member looks out at the storm and says, “You want us to be sailing directly into that mess once again? You go on and take your time, maybe we can wait until it all blows over before we head out again.”

Magana looks after the shark, but fails to spot it in the water anywhere.

Reggie knows about sailing, but isn’t quite sure what comes next.

Terser heals up some of the injuries around while the crew moves quickly and efficiently to patch up and repair where they can.

Jozhur looks over the side and sees the deep water all around. The water is too dark to make out the bottom, no matter how hard he looks. He sees nothing to indicate it is anything but the usual sea that he is so familiar with.

Aexana congratulates the crew and heads topside. She wonders about how they will proceed as well.

Pinny calls from the railing while he pulls in a rope, “Tis looks to be round 40 fathoms deep here.”

He casts his Message cantrip so that all the Lionfishers can talk to each other under the ocean. Finally, he casts See Invisibility ... just in case.

Rillett instinctively gestures, and the water and dirt are purged from his gleaming, white robes. Almost instantly, he realizes it was a futile move, given where they are headed.

"First, I want to make sure I can track you guys underwater. Terser, Magana and Jozhur, I cast Status on you the night before, so that's still in effect. As for the rest of you, ..." He will then cast Status on Reggie, Zeoll and Aex.

"Thanks for the Message spells Zeoll, that will help."

"Once we get down there and see what we're dealing with, I can cast Freedom of Movement on someone as well. I'll have a light - anyone else need one?" He gestures to a metal ring that burns with a bright flame and hangs from a leather cord around his neck.

He then gathers the party, draws out a metal rod he keeps at his side, and casts an Extended Water Breathing spell on all there (will last 5.7 hours.)

"There, that should do it." He smiles broadly as he adjusts his helm. "Now all we need to do is descend to a great depth to face unknown foes. Say goodbye to the air for a while."

Once everyone is ready, Rillett will follow suit and hang on to the anchor to descend with them.

Magana looks blankly around as Terser and Rillet and refer to someone named "Mags". In the ensuing silence she realizes her comrades are referring to her. She starts to get angry, then realizes they are not intentionally trying to insult her, but rather attempt a familial nickname. Having had no such bond since being exiled from her own family, she is momentarily stunned speechless as old, buried memories make her heart clench.

Quietly she says, "My uncle used to call me Mags." She then takes a deep breath to steady her voice. "I have been concerned about swinging a flail underwater. If you have a spell that will allow unimpeded fighting, I will sorely need it, my brothers."

Magana accepts one of Rillett's LIGHT necklaces, ties it around her left wrist, and is also ready to descend now.

He nods as the magic of Rillet's water breathing spell washes over him. "Steel yourselves, this is sure to be our greatest challenge yet." He approaches Tula, "Keep the 'Fish close and safe until we return, hopefully it isn't long."

He holds off on using the potion until he can't see.

DM Jeff - Into the Depths
Thursday April 21st, 2016 8:35:53 AM

While the crew works on the repairs and Pinny stares at the unmoving storm, Zeoll calls to the others and gets people moving. He starts casting spells on himself and others. He offers up a spare Mage Armor spell to anyone who wants one. Rillett nods and cleans his robes before jumping in the dark water. He thanks Zeoll and starts casting spells of his own. He spots Pinny trying to mimic the spells, as if trying to see if he can cast spells by simply making the motions. He casts the water breathing spell on everyone. He makes sure everyone has light and offers Freedom of Movement to everyone.

Reggie watches all the magic and cautiously asks Zeoll about the mage armor spell. Zeoll quickly explains the spell, how it works, and then casts it on her. Terser and Rillett talk about spells and the innocent Magana. She starts to get angry when she realizes they are talking about her, but then gets quiet. She suggests that she might be the one most in need of the freedom of movement underwater, because swinging the heavy flail is going to be difficult.

Jozhur heads to the edge and looks down into the water. He gives final instructions to the crew as the rest of the group heads over the side. After all have moved, Jozhur follows. He waves and the crew starts dropping the anchor as everyone crowds over to grab onto the anchor or the chain.

The quiet calm of the air is quickly replaced by the silence of the water. Sounds carry well in the water and the occasional pulsing sound is easily heard by all. The surprise of the water shocks everyone who is used to breathing air and some hold their breath simply because they are used to not breathing water. After a few moments of descent, everyone finds they can indeed breathe normally, though it is quite a different feeling having water flowing into your mouths. The descent is quick with the anchor and chain. After a short distance, some pressure builds up in your ears, but a quick swallow/breath of water manages to equalize that pressure.

Looking around as you descend, the water is indeed murky. There is little to see and you cannot see far. There is an occasional scrap of seaweed that drifts past, clearly torn from its base by the storm. Near the surface are a few pieces of driftwood, but as you descend, those disappear, too. The lights you carry with you light the area immediately around you, but the darkness feels like it is closing in the deeper you go. Looking back up, you see the light from the surface quickly fading as you continue to descend.

Very suddenly, the anchor stops moving. A moment later, your feet hit the bottom of the sea. The bottom here appears to be mostly sand, with a few scattered rocks around. There are gentle, even curves to the surface of the sand, looking like a long-lost desert underwater. As everyone else arrives at the bottom, you look around and see more sand and a flat bottom. Off to one side you can see a bit that looks a little different from the sand. Moving the lights and moving towards it, you can see that you are not going to have to wonder where to go next. As you move closer, the lights slowly reveal more of the massive structure – and structure is what it appears to be. It looks like there was once a massive rock foundation here at the bottom. Some unnatural forces, probably magic, have worked and shaped the rock into what resembles a huge underwater castle entranceway. There are large, crude towers on both sides of a yawning cave entrance. Two large rocks are stacked in front of the entrance as if to mimic a drawbridge (but they do not actually block the cave entrance). There is a short ditch around the front side of the structure, almost like an underwater moat, but rather undersized and clearly for appearances only. A small brown fish startles you as it passes in front of you – that is when you realize that the fish was the only thing that you have seen that is moving down here other than the group.

OOC:
Please take note of underwater combat rules. These will certainly affect anyone without freedom of movement.

DM Jeff - Into the Depths
Friday April 22nd, 2016 11:06:40 AM

The silence continues at the bottom of the sea. Reggie seems to be enjoying herself, experimenting with the water breathing. While it still feels very strange, she finds that she can, indeed, burp a little bit. When she speaks, the sound is quite strange – while the sound itself carries through the water, it appears that the further the sound goes, the more garbled it becomes. She imagines that no one will be able to understand one another more than a few feet apart – it is good that the group can communicate magically with the message spell.

Rillett and Jozhur talk about light and prepare for the underwater castle. Rillett also casts freedom of movement on Magana and tries out the nickname again. It appears to be starting to stick. Magana and Terser take the lead and start walking through the thick water towards the castle. While they do, they and Jozhur look around carefully. Looking for sea life and plants, there is indeed little to be seen. Jozhur looks up and realizes one reason there is little plant life is simply due to lack of light. The water here is deep enough that very little light penetrates through the water. Zeoll does spot a few more schools of fish as he looks for them. They appear nowhere near the underwater castle. He does not spot anyone or anything moving at the castle. As he looks more carefully, he can see that it really isn’t a castle, but simply is designed to look like a castle. In reality, it is little more than a cave opening with piles of rocks and carved rock around it. It is simple enough just to walk into the cave opening without any apparent resistance, and they could swim over, around, or through the entranceway if you desire.
