You discuss your plans for the building a bit more, but Boggs's arrival turns the conversation to other matters.
Lornak asks who else was watching. "Difficult to say," Boggs replies. "The Arena is pretty big, and while it wasn't filled to capacity, there were still a lot of people there. And, truth be told, I was a bit distracted, hoping my team wasn't about to be killed."
Toston asks about coalitions. "Keys and Darts are aligned for the moment," he confirms, "though it's hard to say how long that will last. I think it's safe to say that the Knives are not your friends, which means the Wolves probably don't like you much either. I'm not sure about the Teeth, and you can never tell which side the Cloaks are on."
Dušan asks about possible businesses for the building. "Given everything that's happened," Boggs says, "I'm going to suggest you lay low for a while. In fact, I was going to suggest you leave town for a bit. That Arena fight was very public, and as some of you have already noted, you may have drawn the wrong kind of attention. It might not be a bad idea to let things die down for a bit."

"We could lay low by working on this building. Anyone have any build-a-business scrolls?" Wil laughed at his own joke. "We can start by asking some of the rolling vendors if they want a permanent place to stay." "On another note.. I would like invest in some poisons for my darts and some advantages for my Darkness skills."
Var (Tom I.) AC:17/T:13/FF:14/CMD:20 Friday April 15th, 2016 12:36:54 PM
Var breaths an audible sigh of relief "Thank the gods, I thought you were going to have us hold up in a safe-house again. I don't know how much more of that I can take."

"Did you have a destination in mind Boggs or do you think it would be a good idea for us to plan our own outing? We could investigate the Teeth, try to get them to smuggle us out of Dirt City and while we are their cargo try to take surreptitiously take their pulse as far as their allegiances go? If you did have a destination in mind I don't suppose we would be able to travel by ship? It has been a long while since I was able to stretch my sea legs." Toston asks.

Lornak listens to what Boggs has to say and is relieved at his suggestion to leave town for a while. With all the upset lately, he can look forward to getting away from the pressures of the city. "I haven't been on a good hunt for what seems like eons. That has my vote."
Lornak addresses Dusan. "Don't fret my friend, you have rangers among you that can show you the ways of travelling abroad. You may even enjoy yourself."
Lornak shuffles up next to Wilford and comments softly on the subject of poisons; "I may be able to craft you some. Well see what we can gather when we are out in the wilderness."
Alizar HP: 23/23 AC: 16(T:12/FF:14) CMD:14 Friday April 15th, 2016 10:09:45 PM
Alizar stretched a bit. "Well, I guess a bit of a tramp wouldn't be a bad thing. It's been a while since I have seen things outside the city walls. Truth be told, I think it would do us all a bit of good."
Alizar stood up, "What did you have in mind Boggs?
DM Kathy Sunday April 17th, 2016 9:04:41 PM
Once you find out that "laying low" does not necessarily involve spending days in a safehouse, many of you are amenable to the prospect.
"I'm not sure," Boggs says. "I've heard talk of a trade delegation going to Aisildur, to reciprocate the delegation that came here from Aisildur a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure where the are in the planning stages, but if they're going to Aisildur, they could probably use some security. I'll make inquiries." He looks around at the building. "Also, if you're going to be out of town for a while, you need to figure out what you're going to do with this place. Squatters will move in if you give them a chance."

Lornak considers running protection for the trade delegation. It sounds like a good idea. The group can lay low and get work at the same time. He did want to spend some time on his crafting but it looks as if he won't find the time. Well at the least he can be on the look out for materials while abroad. Hearing Var boast, Lornak says nothing. "I'm more of a wanderer than a guide." he thinks to himself. "Unless there is need."
DM Kathy Monday April 18th, 2016 10:10:31 PM
On the whole, you're amenable to the idea of escorting a trade delegation, although you have some questions.
Alizar asks about threats. "There have been no specific threats," Boggs replies. "But seeing as one of the Aisildurans was murdered when they came here, it's reasonable to take precautions. There may be people looking for payback."
Hmerrin asks about renting space to the CMTC. "Most of our traders buy and sell entire shipments," Boggs explains. "They sell to stores, so I don't think any of them need a storefront. Although maybe somebody has a client looking for space. I can ask."
Wilford is keen to get someone moved in right away, but there may not be time before you leave. You might just want to hire a guard, or some carpenters, or both, and deal with renting out the space when you get back.
"Come to the office tomorrow," Boggs says. "I'll let you know about the trade delegation."

Var (Tom I.) AC:17/T:13/FF:14/CMD:20 d20=5 ; Tuesday April 19th, 2016 10:09:32 AM
Var goes over to Hmerrin and says "what do you way we go find someone who can start taking apart that third floor while we're gone?"
Var thinks hard about what he knows about Dirt City and where to find a reputable carpenter (Local Knowledge: 5), but all he gets is a headache.
"I do have an idea on hiring a guard, too. That jerk who was guarding the warehouse with the scorpion? He might be interested in extra work, and seems trustworthy enough. Provided no other bugs show up and scare him off."
Lornak ( Frank S.) HP:26/32 AC: 16(T:13/FF:10) CMD:18 d20+6=15 ; Tuesday April 19th, 2016 1:01:23 PM
Thoughts of packing his bedroll and rations excited Lornak. His anticipation of being in the wilderness gets the better of his for a second. When his mind returns to the conversation at hand, Dusan's suggestion of a good nights rest is prudent however. "We must not get ahead of ourselves." Lornak thinks to himself.
He too thinks where in Dirt City the group can find a reputable carpenter. (Knowledge Local d20=15). He chimes in on Var and Hmerrin. "I believe I may know where we can look."
"It might do us well to find someone that can also craft hidden entrances, rooms and compartments. He looks to Boggs. "Perhaps not go as far as traps, but if we must to rebuild much if not all of this structure, we should plan for surprises, ...and the unexpected."

He looks down. "Probably want to hide the better part of this before we go traipsing around Below for a help."
Hmerrin gives the gold to Dusan, since he's heading back Marsh House. He holds on to a couple hundred gold pieces, follows Toston, and goes to secure a carpenter.

"Neat, we're going right? When? Let me pack up my stuff before we leave." Asteria has nothing smart to add to the conversation, so she looks around and waits to leave.
DM Kathy Tuesday April 19th, 2016 10:57:28 PM Var isn't able to think of any carpenters, but he does remember Clovis, the half-orc guard whom you helped with a scorpion problem. You talk to him, and he explains that he already has a job. However, he is able to recommend someone for the job--his younger sister Cinzi. "And if she don't do a good job," he says, "let me know and I'll thump her one." (Cinzi's services will be 2 silver per day; she'll want at least 2 gold (10 days' wages) before you leave town.
Lornak tries to think of reputable carpenters. Finding "reputable" anything in Dirt City is always a challenge, but he realizes that a good place to start is among the halflings. There's a decent-sized halfling population in Dirt City, and most of them owe allegience to no House--nor are they Grubbers.
The trick with hiring halflings is that everything is word of mouth. You have to know someone--or you have to know someone who knows someone. Or you have to be a pretty smooth talker. You pool your resources, work your contacts, and with a little persuasive diplomacy from Alizar, you find a pair of halfling brothers willing to undertake the job of demolishing the third floor and putting up a temporary roof. That alone will take some time; you can discuss further repairs when you return. If you choose to hire them, the cost will be 50 gold. They'll want half before you leave town.
The next day, you meet Boggs at the Crescent Moons office. With him is a blond half-elf man with green eyes and a pleasant expression. "This is Lukas Bell," Boggs says. "He's one of the merchants who will be part of the trade visit to Acid City."
"Very nice to meet you," Lukas says. "Mr. Boggs was kind enough to offer us a bit of additional security, and I believe we'll take him up on it. We'll be glad to have you along--but we planned to be off today, by noon at the latest. Can you be ready by then?"
Alizar HP: 23/23 AC: 16(T:12/FF:14) CMD:14 Tuesday April 19th, 2016 11:02:17 PM
Alizar greeted Lukas with a nod, and a slight smile. "I don't believe the timing will be a issue. You say we will be, 'additional security'. Does that mean you will have other security besides us. If so, can they be trusted?"
Lornak ( Frank S.) HP:26/32 AC: 16(T:13/FF:10) CMD:18 Wednesday April 20th, 2016 6:01:03 PM
Lornak joins Alizar to help with said persuasive diplomacy when they seek out the halfling carpenters. As he parts with the group he asks Toston to get him a whip and 2 potions of Bakskin from the Catecombs when he travels there for provisions.
After the interchange with the haflings, he reminds himself to make sure to complete all of the trek packing before he sleeps so that he can get the halfiings the down payment for the roof first thing in the morning. As they walk home he grabs a bite to eat.
Upon entering Marsh House he heads to his room and starts separating his gear. He makes sure to add the things that they will need to survive in the wilderness should the need arise. "Accompanying a caravan shouldn't be too taxing, right? Lornak says.
Hmerrin(HP 43/43 AC20/14t/16ff, CMD 20) Wednesday April 20th, 2016 6:08:26 PM
Hmerrin asks enough trade questions of the halflings to assure himself they're competent, ie - better than he is.

With that out of the way, the fighter is ready to go.

Dušan hands off any sunrods requested, and leaves all but 3 sunrods at the Tower.

[First, before I forget again, everyone take 100 XP for the final scene of the previous module.]
Hmerrin spends some time chatting with the halflings. They seem to know what they're doing. More to the point, they seem to know a lot of steady, reliable workers they can bring onto the project. At the end of your conversation, you're satisfied that they're at least competent enough to do what you asked of them.
Wilford, for his part, is anxious to get the bottom two floors ready to move in and rent out, but that's probably going to have to wait until you get back. "Better to have the client on hand for that sort of thing," one of the brothers says. "There'll be a lot of questions come up as we go during renovation. Demolition, now--that's pretty straightforward."
Alizar asks about what security precautions the trade delegation has already taken. "Well," he replies, "not much, to be frank. We've hired drivers for the wagons, and made sure they know their way around cudgels and crossbows. So we'll be really happy to have all of you along."
The rest of you spend your time gathering gear and making preparations.
Question: are you hiring a guard for your building, whether it's Cinzi or somebody else?
You arrive to meet the rest of the trade delegation, who are gathered around a group of wagons and pack animals. Lukas introduces you, after a fashion. "These good folk provide security for the Crescent Moons Trading Company," he says. "Crescent Moons has been good enough to lend them to us for the trip." The merchants look at you with varying degrees of interest. Aside from Lukas, there is a halfling woman with graying brown hair, a rather skinny dwarf man, and a couple of humans.

Before leaving, you ensure that there will be workman at your building during the day, and a guard there overnight. And yes, Cinzi is a half-orc like her brother Clovis.
Var considers the terrain. Izen is mostly plains, with the occasional swamp to liven things up. [OOC: My understanding of the Wold is that Izen is mostly plains. My understanding of coastal lowalnds is that they can get swampy, but perhaps I'm overthinking it. :) ] You are also aware that your road will take you near Blackbird Forest, which can get....interesting. But you won't have to deal with that for several days.
It is mid-spring.
Dušan introduces himself to the merchants. "Hello, Dušan, dear," the halfling woman replies. "It's nice to meet you. I'm Epria Gladstone, representing the South Main Halfling Ladies’ Sewing Circle and Assassins’ Guild." She gives Hmerrin and Asteria similarly cheery greetings.
The other merchants give you cordial nods, but say nothing at the moment.
"I believe we're ready," Lukas says. "Shall we be off?" And a few minutes later, the wagons begin rolling slowly through the streets of Dirt City, toward the city gates and the plaines of Izen beyond.

"I know a song we can sing, it's called: 'be quiet and let me enjoy being away from that city in peace'. It's a catchy tune; you'd like it." he says to Alizar, mostly kidding. The further away from the City that the convoy gets, the more Var's mood improves.

(OOC: Not sure who is in the wagon with Wil, if anyone. Wil is taking rear guard)
Lornak ( Frank S.) HP:26/32 AC: 16(T:13/FF:10) CMD:18 d20+7=14 ; Friday April 22nd, 2016 2:27:05 PM
Lornak continues with the group as the caravan leaves the city. He is with Var in spirit. A walk in wild without distraction or pressures of the city. , it will be nothing short of heavenly.
When the word assassin comes up in the introductions, he hesitates and does not give his name in exchange. While Epira's troupe title is novel he immediately puts his guard up. He simply abhors assassins. He pulls his hood down that much further and casually disengages and meanders toward the back of the caravan by Hmerrin.
Lornak can see that Hmerrin is a little uncomfortable with the idea of leaving the city. "I've always found that people bring you the most trouble young Hmerrin." Lornak eyes Gladstone. (Sense Motive d20=14) "You have nothing to fear from the wild."
Alizar HP: 23/23 AC: 16(T:12/FF:14) CMD:14 Saturday April 23rd, 2016 6:18:14 PM
Alizar smiled at var's response. He probably took a little too much enjoyment in annoying the man who is half orc. "I have, I wasn't born in Dirt City. It has been some time though. It is nice to get out a stretch my legs a bit. I miss the trees."
DM Kathy Sunday April 24th, 2016 9:59:53 PM Toston speaks briefly with Epria Gladstone. "Oh, goodness, we're not really assassins," she says. "That's just a name. Dirt City has a reputation, you see, and local color sells!" She chuckles. "Buying houseold linens from a group of nice halfling ladies is dull, but buying them from a group of halfling ladies who also assassinate people..well! Then you have a story to tell, don't you?"
Watching them, Lornak is pretty sure Epria is telling the truth. She's a nice halfling lady with a flair for marketing, not an assassin.
Var asks Lukas if he's ever been to Acid City before. "No," the half-elf replies. "This is my first overland trip.I think Ekhart has been there, though," he says, indicating one of the human traders.
Over the course of the day, you meet the other traders. The other human man is called Ludwin, and the dwarf is Andrit Nighthelm. He is rather skinny for a dwarf, and is perfectly affable rather than being gruff and taciturn. It's easy to see why he was selected as a "salesman."
There are other travelers on the road. About mid-afternoon, your group is overtaken and passed by a small train of pack mules. The muleteers exchange cordial greetings with you, but keep moving. Later, you pass another merchant caravan heading the other direction, toward Dirt City. They, too, exchange pleasantries but no more.
That evening, you camp by the roadside in a place that has clearly been used as a campsite before. Much of the vegitation is trampled flat, and there is a ring of blackened stones for a fire. A freshwater spring is nearby, with a well-worn path to mark the way.
Var (Tom I.) AC:17/T:13/FF:14/CMD:20 d20+9=17 ; d20+10=14 ; Monday April 25th, 2016 12:32:36 PM
Var put the question to Ekhart, "How is the road to Acid City? I know Izen pretty well, but I've never been out to Aisildur."
Once at the campsite, Var does a quick survey of the area (Perception: 16) and goes about making the place as livable as possible, getting a fire going and doing some light foraging for any berries or roots that might be added to dinner (Survival: 19).
Around the fire that night, Var asks Asteria where her tribe was from, and where' she's traveled. He also asks Toston about his travels, as well. When the group seems ready to retire, he offers to take first watch.
Lornak ( Frank S.) HP:26/32 AC: 16(T:13/FF:10) CMD:18 d20+6=13 ; d20+8=15 ; Monday April 25th, 2016 3:28:02 PM
Lornak is a little embarrassed when he learns that Gladstone is not really an assassin. Under his breath; "You can never be to careful." When asked what he said, Lornak replies; "Nothing..."
He is uneasy to see people go to and from the city on the road as they travel. It is a sure sign that the route they take is well traveled and well known. If anyone wanted to harass the caravan an ambush placed on this route would surely succeed. Lornak feels the caravan should go out of their element to better protect it members. Looking forward to more remote landscapes is only a fringe benefit.
As they travel Lornak keeps his eyes out for anything that can be gathered for food or crafting. Survival d20=13.
When the group reaches their first stop he too surveys the area. Perception d20=15. He sets up his bedroll on the outskirts of the fire and keeps to himself, keen to listen rather than interact to get to know those with whom he travels.
Dušan (Erik) [HP:22/26; AC:12(14); Touch: 12; FF:10; CMD:13 d4=4 ; d4=3 ; d4=4 ; d4=2 ; d4=3 ; d4=1 ; Monday April 25th, 2016 4:16:29 PM
"I may not be useful outdoors as you some of you are, but I can make any berries found go further."
Dušan offers to cast Goodberry on any found berries making up to 17 Goodberries that heal one HP apiece, satisify a meal and keep 24 hours.
Toston Lotor(Hugh Crosmun) [HP:23/23; AC:18; Touch18; FF 14] - CMD 18 d20+12=14 ; d12=10 ; d20+13=27 ; Monday April 25th, 2016 4:17:22 PM
"That is some clever advertising." Toston says to Epria.
When the group reaches the campsite the gnome takes some time to check out the area. (Perception; 14, Stealth : 27)
"Are we going to set watches?" Toston asks his group and the other guards.
Toston volunteers to take the first watch and finds an out of the way place where he can hide and observe the campsite and the surrounding areas.
Hmerrin(HP 43/43 AC20/14t/16ff, CMD 20) Monday April 25th, 2016 6:49:54 PM
Hmerrin travels along pretty quietly, answering the merchant's hail and queries, but otherwise staying pretty close to the group.
As evening rolls around, and the caravan stops, the young man offers up a tidbit. "The caravan I was on before set up two people in each watch," he notes. "Usually pairing a front line type with a caster or archer."
The teen looks around. "If Lornak and Toston wanna go first, how bout me and Alizar on two, Asteria and Dusan on three, and Wil and Var on four?"
Var (Tom I.) AC:17/T:13/FF:14/CMD:20 Monday April 25th, 2016 8:47:18 PM
Var agrees with Hmerrin. "As good a plan as any. Will, see you on fourth watch."
DM Kathy Monday April 25th, 2016 10:34:48 PM Var asks the merchant Ekhart about the road to Acid City. "Oh, the road's all right," he replies. "A bit swampy in places, 'specially this time of year. Best to run a bit light, which we're doing. What you have to watch out for is that Blackbird Forest. Road don't go in there, but it goes too close for comfort."
It's a bit early in the season for berries, so Dušan will have a hard time finding any for his spell.
You're a sharp-eyed bunch, and you don't see anything untoward at your campsite. You set watches, and help set up camp. You watch through the night, but your group is undisturbed.
The next morning is overcast, the kind of high overcast that often burns off later in the day. You pass a group of travelers heading the other direction, and once again exchange pleasantries. In the afternoon, you find that you are slowly overtaking a small merchant caravan--just two wagons.
A short time later, you realize why you are overtaking the other group; they seem to be having trouble with one of their wagons. They keep stopping and checking a wheel, or possibly an axle. Now that you are closer, you can see that the wagons are not in good repair, the mules drawing them are past their prime, and the merchants all look to be a bit down on their luck.
Perception DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { The "merchants" seem to be pretty well-armed. Also, they seem to be watching your group.}
Knowledge: Engineering DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {There's not a thing wrong with that wheel or that axle.}
Alizar HP: 23/23 AC: 16(T:12/FF:14) CMD:14 d20+6=20 ; Monday April 25th, 2016 10:54:44 PM
Alizar stretched as he awoke, and set off to his morning meditation. As they were traveling down the road, Alizar noticed what seemed to be a caravan in distress. His first instinct was to stop and help the troubled travelers, however something caught his eye. (Perception 20) "How dangerous are these roads? This group seems pretty heavily armed for traveling merchants. Something isn't right here, we should approach with caution."
Alizar reached down into his well of power, casting 'Detect Chaos Alignment' on the band to try and get a read on them.
Asteria Amarante (Genevieve) [HP: 16/35; AC: 20; Touch: 12; FF: 20; CMD: 18] d20+6=17 ; Monday April 25th, 2016 11:08:31 PM
Around the fire, Asteria mentions that she and her tribe stayed a little to the West of Dirt City, but didn't travel much. They had a small territory near the water and didn't mess with anyone else as long as they stayed away. "I doubt we'll run into them."
On the road again, Asteria notices that the other group is having some trouble. She stays with the group, but does pause when her group gets closer to theirs. "You okay, travelers?"
(Perception 17 vs. 20)
Var (Tom I.) AC:17/T:13/FF:14/CMD:20 d20+10=20 ; Tuesday April 26th, 2016 9:32:11 AM
(Perception: 20) "Hmph." Var grunts. "Could be they're carryin' for defense..." He says, quiet enough not to be heard by the other group. Despite his comment, Var removes his bow from it's holster, and strings it in a series of fluid motions.
Toston notices the group of heavily armed travelers and the fact that there is nothing wrong with their wheel.
Toston says to his companions, "I think they may be exaggerating their mechanical problems, might be an ambush, best prepare yourselves."
He uses his wand of mage armor on himself and eats his fortune cookie, breaking it first and reading, "Princess Leia: Why, you stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking Nerf Herder. Han Solo: Who's scruffy-looking?"
Active effects; Mage Armor : +4 AC - 1 hour +1 luck bonus on next roll - fortune cookie

Dušan nods to his crew and casts Detect Magic on the other caravan. Dušan matches Var's tone, "If they're just prepared for defense, we must be very intimidating. They seem to be sizing us up."

Wil gets little sleep over night but it was enough. He took up a rear position and aimed his crossbow at the caravan. He was prepared to cast Darkness if they needed to disappear. (Perception: 8)

When Lornak wakes he brushes a thin layer of dew off himself as he rises. The day will see a burnoff and it may yet be pleasant.
Throughout the day Lornak occupies his mind by scrutinizing the landscape as the caravan travels down the road. He looks forward to the time where he may encounter animals in the wild. He admires Var's animal companion and thinks may its time he sought one out. But what lively creature would he like to be familiar with...? "Equine. Canine. Bovine? Heh...no. He mumbles to himself. "Rodent. Serpent. Aves...?"
As his mind is occupied he doesn't acknowledge the caravan up ahead. Thank the gods for his companions as they warn him of danger where usually he would be the first to find it and be wary. His mind clears and he goes on high alert. Perception d20=27

He also removes and strings his bow.

Seeing her companions drawing their weapons, Asteria lets out a sigh and draws her battleaxe. "Man, a fight this early? This sucks. Hey, people we're escorting. This might get ugly, so you might want to back up a bit." Facing the 'merchants' that they are now approaching, Asteria lets out a nasty snarl, audible enough for them to hear, and attempts to scare them off. She looks rather intimidating as she yells to them. "SCRAM! I'll take off your heads if you don't!"
