Carver (John C) AC 16, AC 18 with shield, CMB 6, CMD 17, HP 48/48 Speed 65 Character Sheet
Friday April 29th, 2016 8:47:35 PM

"I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss this. I agree we shouldn't become brokers as a merchandise way point. But when I was in the Fist, we went in after Gnolls, and ended up facing Gnolls and some sort of pygmy that was plant based. The plant things were at best neutral but they infected me with some sort of hide rot.
There is a lot in the woods that can and will work against anything, even if it's in the woods best interest."

Carver downs another mug of wine and holds it out for a refill, and drops some coin on the bar to keep up with the tab. Being a Centaur, it would take a barrel of wine in a single night to get him drunk, but he rather enjoyed the taste.

Dungarth: 'eros such as yourselves, I ask naught but your opinions on the validity of this mans words, I've worked Owlbear, 'tis a good hide, naturally white, and with an interesting grain, due to the feathers the beast sports. tough too. but in all my years, I've only worked it a 'half dozen times.

Jyrial: It happened quite by accident the first time, the beast charged me near the edge of a ravine. I dodged out of the way just in the nick of time and the beast fell to it's death. since then I've been cautious and been able to rig deadfalls and traps to catch the beasts. it normally takes me most of the season to catch them. I've also caught the odd Displacer beast. Savannah monitors, Lady Amherst pheasants, I don't deal in bugbear hide though, those things are sneaky, mean and I've moral reasons not to take the hides of man shaped beasts. I once almost caught a Wyven, but I let it go...well...let it escape..there was no way I was going to approach the beast and let it know who had snared it, I don't deal in Dragon hide either...it was actually more of an accident that it got caught. I've tried catching Bulette, but those things are wicked tough and most of my techniques only make them angry...er.

Armand you get nothing from Dungarth but a sense of open respect for your party. from Jyrial, you can't get much of anything, besides a good story.

Leskni responds to Armand
"While I am nowhere near as expert as many of my kin, any adult Liontaur can trap and skin animals"

To Jyrial
"Yes, it is very wise to be very careful what you trap and kill. There are many things much wiser than generally thought. Unless you are SURE that it is hostile or a mere beast it is always better to try and not kill things"

Armand shrugs his shoulders and resumes drinking his tea.

"This guy is going after all this game single handed? There's clearly more to him than meets the eye." He thinks to himself.

"While I really can't comment on your business, perhaps we as a group should keep such things in mind. While I don't see us going out and trapping things that are just doing their natural thing, those that attack us we probably should consider skinning.

Atlas sits back and listens to the conversation, wondering where it is going. He perks up at mention of the Wyvern, displacer beast, and a few of the other creatures. That sounds very interesting to him, but the idea of being a trapper doesn't appeal to him at all.

DM Shane
Monday May 2nd, 2016 1:21:40 PM

The conversation goes on from there, the price of fur, tanning techniques, and tales of the adventure and travel, Dungarth seems pleased with the the parties take on the man and leaves the table satisfied.

Over the course of the next 5 days, you see Mr. Hal (Jyrial) hanging about the tree doing this and that. Life goes on.

It is early Afternoon, and as on many days, the group is gathered at TreeTops Inn with many of the other residents, enjoying some company and wine. A man, dressed in well made travelling clothes, enters and glances about as he walks to the main bar where Ciyradyl Ilyndrathyl is idlly passing the time sipping a glass of wine. They have a brief exchange, and she smiles and points over to the group. Ciyradyl comes out from behind the bar and escorts him over to where you are sitting, but comes to stand in front of Laughingwater, who is also at the table.
Laughingwater, may I present William Fletcher. Mr Fletcher, this is Laughingwater. He can take care of all the arrangements you require.” Ciyradyl smiles at the party asks if anyone needs anything and gets it or returns to her spot and resumes her glass.

The man bows respectfully to Laughingwater. Greetings sir! I represent a trade consortium out of Plateau City that wishes to open up trade with a 3rd party, I'm here to arrange things for our trade delegation and to secure lodging for them and the other guests. I was told you were the man to speak to about it? One of the reasons we chose the Tree of Parting was that it is a good mid point for goods exchange to take place for the respective actors in this transaction.

Laughingwater nods his head towards the man and motions for him to take a seat at the table with you all. Yes, Mr...Fletcher was it? The Tree has played host to many negotiations in the past. We pride ourselves on being a safe haven for traders and travellers coming through this area and the Tree top Tavern has rooms for guests and a private room for meetings. May I ask for some particulars in regards to the guest who will be attending, We pride ourselves on being able to entertain all manner.

Fletcher smiles, he seems to always have a genuine smile on his face, and chuckles. Well, I'm not too sure who the consortium will be sending out, but the 3rd party will be a group of non-surface Drow! if this works out we will be opening up an entirely new trade market! There is a possibility that the Drow will wish to use the Tree of Parting as the primary trade point! At least we hope to convince them of it. I would like to make a good impression on them, I have heard that just getting this meet was quite difficult, if we can get them to use the Tree it would bring a lot of trade here, and make our P/L statements look a whole lot better to boot!

Laughingwater nods, glances over at the party, leans back in his chair and replies Drow you say? Subterranean at that! I don't think we've ever had a non-surface drow here at the Tree. I can see security being an issue....Hmmmmm....Mr. Fletcher, I'd like to introduce you to Atlas, Mack, Leskni, Armand, Carver Osul and Owen. these fine folk are the Trees own. The Hero's of the Tree of Parting. I think for a bit of consideration, they might be enticed to act as security for the upcoming event. They are quite good at fixing problems before they get out of hand.

Fletchers eyes widen as he realizes who he is setting with, he stands up and bows respectfully to the group. Forgive me, I had no idea who I was setting with! Your reputation is known, even in Plateau City. It is an Honor to meet you all.

I introduce myself to be polite, but eventually, I get a wild idea to head out in the woods and go camping. Probably in the direction of the Culverwood. That always seems fun. If the weather seems decent, I head out. I mention it to the party eventually, and anyone is welcome to join me if they need to get out. :)

"Hello.
The Drow will most likely take a dislike of myself. Mostly because I'm a devote warrior of my Lord Gargul himself. Being such a warrior, I find it difficult to put up with the stench of Evil. Where most Surface Drow are not evil, most subterranean Drow are still evil plus they worship a vile goddess. I will need to insist on certain restrictions since it's our job to maintain the peace here."

Carver sounds extremely serious about all of this.

Monday May 2nd, 2016 6:06:06 PM

"where I come from the underground Drow have a reputation as both evil and exceedingly duplicitous creatures. Why do you think that you can trust them at all? Surely any profit to be made trading with them isn't worth the cost when they ibevitably betray you. And likely the tree.

Or are my people misinformed? Is their reputation exaggerated?"

Monday May 2nd, 2016 8:07:08 PM

"Hold on their Mack. Things may be turning interesting here." Armand tries to prevent Mack from running off into the coming winter to go camping.

"I think Carver and Leskni have the right of it here. And inadvertently have hit upon why merchants from Plateau City would want to have the Drow come up where they are not." He turns to Carver, Atlas, and the rest. "Have you never heard the saying that the best place to make war is on somebody else's property?"

Armand turns to Fletchers, observing him closely. Sense Motive 19 (d20+10) "Why don't you want the Drow in Plateau City Sir? Wouldn't that be easier for supply and demand and such?"

"Laughingwater this is a precarious arrangement for the Tree, and if you go through with this I think Mr. Fletchers is going to have to pony up for expenses and arrangements. This should not be considered a common merchant group coming to do business." Armand continues to keep an eye on Fletchers.

'Osul feels the talk of Plateau City and the Drow is at a remove - not in his immediate sphere of influence.

Armand makes a good point. "That reminds me of a story father use to tell us about the Tribesmen of the Cold Hillsides and the Princes of the Plans, who would go make war on each other in the land of the Dwellers in the Forest ... or some such. Not so good for the Dwellers in the Forest, as I recall."

"Mack, give me overnight to prepare, please?"

Atlas perks up at this conversation of a security detail. He listens to the others and finally chimes in, "Yes, Armand is right. We're going to need preparations. Usually the big costs are the hired help. How many people will be coming from each side? If you're going to do this at the Tree you're going to do it under our rules, which may change by the minute depending on the situation. Both parties must agree to this otherwise it is not happening here. Also, how much time do we have to prepare?"

Atlas turns to Carver and in a lowered voice, "If something goes wrong and we have to go gallivanting around the Underdark we're going to get an experience of a lifetime!"

DM Shane
Tuesday May 3rd, 2016 9:10:01 PM

Fletcher nods, Sure, I personally have great distaste for evil beings myself. The Drow tribes are as disjointed and as contentious as are humans. The surface drow, have fully renounced their evil ways, and so it is with this branch as well. While I have never met them, I have it on good authority that they are much less viscous and duplicitous as their Ilk. At the same time, if they aren't, it's kind of why we want you there.

Laughingwater nods as well. We have an Orc tribe or two that do a bit of trading beneath the trees shade, I've no doubt a few of them are suspect. They understand the rules though, and after we killed a few trying to cause problems, and cut off their trading privileges they came around. The thing about dealing with societies like that, is that you have to appear strong, even cruel or they take it as weakness and an opportunity to attack.

"I take it as the guards, we get to set the conditions here at the tree?"

"If these are atypical Drow then I'll go along. Everybody deserves a chance to be judged on their oen merits. But we need to be very cautious. Will they agree to surrendering all weapons, including spell component pouches, magic items, holy symbols, etc. To be returned when they leave, of course. Hmm. If we ask that then we become responsible for assuring THEIR security, don't we? And I imagine they'll have enemied.

Perhaps we restrict what they can carry outside of their quarters?"

'Osul (Graham) AC:11 (T:11, FF:10), CMD:15, HP:32/32

He may not be enamored with the whole idea, but this security is going to apply equally to bother sides.

Armand (Robert D) AC 16/touch11/flat15 HP 41/41 CMD 16 Character Sheet
Wednesday May 4th, 2016 8:41:15 AM

"Hmm. Leskni brings up a point. What if we allow them to carry their weapons but with the following restrictions. 1, they must be peace bonded. 2 drawing a weapon, even if not used, immediately gets the person ejected from the tree. 3 drawing a weapon and using it immediately gets the entire delegation ejected from the tree. 4 If we have to get involved, as in the weapon user does not immediately stop when ordered to do so, then they get ejected after we restore order....if they are still living. Same goes for spells. Though that could get trickier."

Armand looks at the group. "How's that sound? Should we subject them to mandatory detect evil, etc. spells?"

He swivels around to Fletcher. [b]"How many persons are in your parties? And we need to settle on fees."

Atlas Sunowl (Trey) AC: 21 (T 13 FF 18), CMD: 20; HP 52/52 Character Sheet
Wednesday May 4th, 2016 11:52:17 AM

"Wow, not much time to prepare. Armand, I know 5 ways to get around a peace bond! I'm more aligned with Leskni. The two groups are coming at different times, so we have an opportunity here. Weapons, spells components, etc are all collected at the base of the tree. Everyone will be searched. Mack, that's your job, but if you steal anything and put us all at risk so help me you're not going to like the results. Deal? The delegates are then sent up in the tree to their lodging. We then store their stuff in a secure location. What about the bank?

"The next day we do the same with the drow. Then, that evening we have the delegations meet. The place where we gave testimony against Gaston would be a perfect location. Laughingwater, can that be arranged?

"The next morning we send down the Plateau City delegates and send them on their way. The day after we send down the Drow and send them on their way. This way there is no chance of conflict upon arrival or departure.

"During the meeting, Carver, Owen, and I will stand as the official peacekeepers. The rest of the party can either be in the room or outside of the room, but they need to be close."

Atlas takes a breath, "Does anyone have any spells or prayers that would be useful in this endeavor? Detect evil will tell us who to keep an eye on, but it could also be misleading. A person with a good heart will often times do something evil because they think it is for the greater good. So lets not be blinded by the results. Any other spells or prayers that would help, either upon arrival, the stay, or the meeting?"

Wednesday May 4th, 2016 12:09:11 PM

My head starts to hurt. I'm not used to so many rules, and feel like I've been cooped up too long as well. I decide to head out in the direction that the surface drow are coming from. I'd like to meet them before they get here, and see if I can get to know them a little better. They sound interesting to me.

If Osul was ready to go camping and would like to join me, that would be even better! If not, I'm off. :)

Wednesday May 4th, 2016 9:07:37 PM

Fletcher: I don't see why not, checking your weapons at the entrance to the gate is just good sense.

Laughingwater We might need to get Miles in on this, He is head of overall security for the Tree, I can see the advantage of having the participants leave their weapons at the door, but Miles is a bit of stickler for making sure everyone is armed, I can't fault his logic, everyone being armed has been the reason we've all survived more than a few times when the tree suffered raiders and brigands.

the party makes plans, Miles is called in and updated on the situation by Laughingwater, who speaks to him quietly and out of earshot before he approaches the table.

Miles is a hard man, his hair cut short, the better to fit beneath a helmet. His blue eyes are so blue they almost glow. he is lean, but too muscular to be called "wiry". Many scars cover his tan skin, some, like the one across his throat, make you wonder how he survived. well, seems we have some VIP's wanting to discuss business at the tree. Laughingwater told me what you were planning, and with Drow I think it's a good idea. I will take charge of the weapons and keep them near the entrance, I won't have weapons near the base where any wandering orc can get to them, and if we have any trouble come around I can issue them back, for help in the defence of the tree. They will check them at the entrance, and pick them up there when they leave. I'll also caution you to not trust that they are fully disarmed. Drow are sneaky, they are also paranoid, What are you going to do if they refuse? I know I'd tell you to go get bent if you asked me to give up my sword...That kind of thing might fly in Plateau City or the Float, but out here, not being armed and being dead are the same thing.

Mack starts getting his pack together to go camping, but he does not know from which direction the Drow are coming.

"Well, I think the obvious answer is to just tell the Drow that they have a choice. Accept our terms and disarm themselves or go elsewhere to do business. We're allowed to protect ourselves.

I think that we need to keep a good watch on them while they're here. Both to make sure that they don't make trouble and to make sure nobody attacks them. Pella can keep on overwatch during the day, those of us with darkvision can watch during the night"

"I still say we tell them that any violence done by a member of their party against anyone else currently in or under the tree gets their entire trade delegation ejected."

Armand pauses, considering something. He turns toward Mack. "Mack, perhaps this would be a good time for you to try and use some of your alchemy skills in our new home. We have that lab all set up. Couldn't hurt to have a few anti-toxins in case someone accidentally gets poisoned by a Drow."

Armand tries to keep from smiling. "You seem to be in a hurry to get away...or perhaps hide. What could be safer than holing up at home, behind locked doors..." He waits to see what reaction he gets.

OOC: Looking at the Alchemy skill, I have to pay 17 gp for raw materials, and 1 do 1 check per week. I failed, but not by enough to destroy the raw materials. So I could try again, but not before they get here. If someone was assisting me, I could get a +2 to my roll, which would still fail.

BUT, Armand succeeded in distracting me, and he didn't even have to roll!!!! :)

"Oh, payment...do you usually take payment for such things? I'm guessing that you need to cover costs and the like, but that you also don't want to deter folks from coming due to it being too expensive. Traders are tight with their purse strings and the Tree does see the profit in other ways."

Looking to Mack as he heads out, "Just be careful friend, whether you're blowing things up with alchemy or walking into drow swords. I need you alive, you're the only one that can attest to us being here from the beginning. The bards will need to hear that part!" Atlas laughs at himself. How things have changed. Before this long delay he could care less about the bards, but sitting around doing nothing and then listening to that old famous writer have him rethinking things.

Fletcher: Do you really think they'll take offence to being asked to give up their weapons? We're trying to make it so that they want to trade with us, it will bring a lot of income into this area if they do. Can't ya'll just watch them really close? Don't get me wrong, I know stores about Drow, and I don't trust them either..but this trade could mean a lot, If we go about this with the mentality of "protect the tree from the vicious Drow" then we are sure to drive them off, and perhaps make enemies out of them. That's not what i'm paying you all for.

Laughingwater: shrugs in reluctant agreement. You may be right Mr. Fletcher, to the party: Do you think, you could watch them, and watch out from trouble from other avenues? and also make sure that no trouble starts at the trade meeting? Jeeze, this is hard.

Fletcher: If you want to bring in Miles as extra security, I would be willing to up my offer to 2100gp.

Any possibility of getting that here? Taking a week to potentially craft a vial of anti-toxin seems somewhat ridiculous. ;)

Not that that necessarily makes a difference at the moment, since I still failed my roll as well. ;) The time is only part of the problem, it seems.

If you don't like the terms of our employment then by all means take your trade delegation elsewhere. Perhaps to Plateau City."

Are you daft? a trade deal like this taking place under our roof will net the Tree a 10% share of all trade coming through here. that's for each trade that comes through...both ways! Also, who gave you the authority to tell this gentleman where to take his trade? He was looking for someone to make sure the trade deal went right, and stupid me, I thought that the heros of the Tree of Parting would be the ones to make it happen. And no Leskni they will be highly offended, just as you are I would if we went to trade with them and they made us disarm ourselves! Laughingwaters voice rises almost to a shout and his face reddens with anger.

Fletcher cringes a bit at Laughingwaters outburst, shrugs apologetically and says: Actually sir, I was going to hire you to make sure the meeting went as smoothly as possible, I didn't hire you to watch the drow and I did offer a price, 2100gp to be split between you all and Miles.

Miles looks at Armand as well. How do you think we survive here at the Tree? We are a trading post, without trade, this place would have been abandoned long ago. The tree has never asked anyone to "leave their weapons at the door" The Tree is a place of neutrality. No one group or organisation can demand how others act in this place - not even you guys, All are welcome to come and trade.

Armand looks startled at Laughingwater's outburst. "Daft, no. I'm new here remember, so is Leskni. WE don't know how the tree operates. From the way you were acting I thought you were asking for our help on something we are clearly not familiar with. If all you wanted was for some extra eyes and ears to be around during these days then you should have said that up front. not make a big deal of bringing someone over and then going through all these antics on asking for advice and input on something we have no experience with."

Armand scoots back from the table and stands. "If you just want us to help keep an eye on things that's fine. We are not trained security people. We don't know what we're doing in that aspect and we were trying to do our best to make sure the tree is safe. We're used to going out and fulfilling a quest, or rescuing someone, or putting undead to rest. Miles is the head of security here. I'll defer to whatever he wants done. For now I bid you goodbye until such time as needed."

Armand heads out the door muttering to himself.

As Armand walks off Laugingwater looks a bit chargrined and seems to deflate a bit. it's alright, it's just that as new additions to the Tree, you don't realize just how precarious our position here is. We grow a bit of our own food, when we can, but when raiders come to harass us, that years crop is invariably lost. the Tree produces a good yield of Fruit and berries, but you can't live on fruit alone and it does not provide enough income to offset costs either. Trade is our life's blood, with out it this entire community would perish. It's also the sole source of succor for any traders, travellers or trappers for hundreds of miles around. We save a lot of peoples lives and do a lot of good here. But we are Free! we exist by our own merit! we have no support from any king or chieftain, that allows us to remain neutral in their affairs, but it also makes us vulnerable should the trade dry up. Ya'll brought up a valid point, I am forced to ask myself "what would we do if two tribes of orcs wanted to have negotiations at the tree? The metaphor breaks down a bit 'cause orks as a general rule prefer having negotiations in the fields beneath the Tree, and they usually end in a great muthering battle anyway. Ork trade constitutes very little toward support and they proved early on that they can't be trusted amongst the folk...with a few tribes as exceptions of course. I don't trust the Drow, I think it would be foolish to blithely open the doors and let them flood in. but at the same time, the trade alliance could possibly bring in enough trade that things would not always be so....so...close to ruin! His frustration and shame at his outburst are plain to see. Even Fletcher is a bit shamed that it was handled so roughly.

Fletchers speaks up. I don't know if it helps but the Drow party will be a Clan Sister a lieutenant and two guards. he offers by way of appeasement.

Drow are Matriarchal, the women hold most positions of power, while the men mostly man the military. A clan sister would be someone of enough power to negotiate trade agreements, but not so important that they can't be risked on the road. Call her a Count or Baron of minor house, hereditary title, minimal land holdings or none.

Laughing water still looks a bit crest fallen, but tries to smile a bit. Tell Armand I'm sorry,

Owen and Osul discuss spell and spell theory.

Carver and anybody else who was checking the defences see that they are very well designed. To let the ramp down that is the main method of entry to the tree, takes no fewer than three people who know what they are doing working together to let down the ramp. The ramp is constructed in such a way that it's natural state if all the ropes and pullies are cut is closed and destroying the counterweights that make that possible will also destroy the ramp. it's a pretty ingenious design, to say the least. Folk sneaking up the trunk of the tree are thwarted by several things that you notice and have pointed out to you. the denizens of the tree have seeded shrieker fungus to grow in the darker sections of the underside of the dwelling, near any points where clandestine entry could be gained. There are several snares set by someone who knows both how to climb and how to put in snares. Also the tree itself, while the bark up here is Oak like and craggy in a pleasing way. around the base of the tree it is smooth and hard, like birch, only rock hard. and the few spots that look climbable, lead right to the shriekers and snares. there is also a good sized stack of rocks and spears near where these climbing areas would lead into the community. many of the "viewing platforms." out on the limbs also double as viewing areas for the "Murder paths" leading up into the snares and shriekers, there is a barrell of arrows and few unstrung bows with their strings in a little jar of oil in a cabinet at these areas as well.

Miles explains that someone is always around these areas, and since everyone on the tree fights in time of need, they are always near a ready supply of weapons should the need arise. Mostly the women take the position on the "viewing platforms" with the arrows. the stands are also the primary fall back position should the defences get breached. the path leading to them can be destroyed easily and the branch beneath is greased. anybody tries to cut the branches is within easy bow range. they can ransack the dwellings but it will be really expensive to get to anybody on the viewing platforms. They have tried to burn the tree a few times, but fire won't touch the tree. As everybody is part of the militia, Miles says that he will put the word out that everybody needs to keep an eye out for the Drow. the more eyes we have out the better.

Leskni has all the time she needs to prep the rooms and can probably have them set up to whatever specification she needs in two days, whether or not the preparations can survive the scrutiny of the visiting VIP's is another matter.

Owen speaks with Fletcher. Fletcher replies I heard that the Drow were sending someone named Eclyndryl but thats all I know of her. She's like mid to low level nobility amongst the Drow.

Armand finds Laughingwater. and they both start to apologise at once, stop, the start again. finally Laughingwater shuts up and listens to Armand. When Armand is finished Laughingwater speaks up. I sometimes get too caught up in the success of the tree, I forget that the tree is composed of people. I got mad at you for trying to protect the tree and all the people here. that was wrong of me. you didn't deserve that. and you didn't know any better. He reaches his arm out and grasps Armands forearm in an "indian handshake" Don't ever quit trying to do the right thing, even when it aggravates old fools like me.

Owen finds that two people know undercommon in the tree. Boolia, and Arnos Falk. Boolia, was taught some by one of her uncles and Arnos learned a bit of it to help write "the orc waife".

The man Mack greets is a bit surprised at seeing him, but he recovers quickly and introduces himself. uh...Well met Sir, I'm Olrich out of Plateau city. What are your intentions? His hand rests on his sword hilt a bit more than casually and his eyes scan the surroundings with concern.

Carver and Atlas discuss potential vectors for doom to enter but nobody can think of anyone that wishes that kind of ill upon the tree. Even the Orcs who would love to raid the tree would like for it to be successful in order to make a better prize. It's a question that deserves close scrutiny, though maybe the question is different from the one asked.

Armand declines all gifts. He explains that the party has not been doing much anyway and what he is doing is a small way of repaying for all the meals they've been eating and such. There's always something needs doing.

He will try to see if there are any guests already in at the tree, visitors, other traders etc. It being almost winter are there many travelers? Perception 6 (d20 +6). However, he often finds that instead of looking around he is concentrating on making repairs.

Owen retreats to the library and looks over the books. Not much here right now, mostly the volumes recovered from the mad drow in the Culverwood. He searches for any references to Drow and Drow customs.
