Dusting the Wind.

DM Shane
Monday May 30th, 2016 9:57:16 PM

Carver Mack 'Osul and Armand meet out in front of Gaston's room along with his manservant James, his bodyguard Olrich and the business agent Fletcher. Not three seconds after Gaston exits the room there is a loud "Whoosh" you hair and clothes whip around you from a great wind coming from...above? the group turns as one towards the noise and wind. Two large clouds are moving from the upper branches of the tree toward you, the dimples and shadows in the rolling surface of the cloud look suspiciously like faces to you. and the "clouds" are moving much faster than any "clouds" you have ever seen. the wind sounds wrong too...almost like airy voices in some strange language. The clouds will reach you in two(2) rounds. anyone not with the group right now can reach them in ten(10) rounds, after the alarm is spread by the sound of folk screaming and dying.

clarification:
Gaston's room is near the parties residence on the bottom layer of the trees branches. The Drow are quartered at the Tree Top Tavern in the upper branches of the Tree, about as far away from each other as it is possible to get while in the Tree of Parting.

I have Mack, Carver, 'Osul and Armand with Gaston at the lower branches. I have Leskni, Owen and Atlas at the Triple T awaiting the Drow. it will take a minimum of 10 rounds to reach melee distance at the lower branches once you hear of the conflict.

The branches near the bottom of the Tree are very long and about 20 yard across. Mack, if you overslept, it will take you 3 rounds to get to where the combat is. I am making the call that on this round only the folk actually facing the threat are aware of it, eveyone else is blissfully unaware of it for a minimum of two rounds. If no one has anything to do during those rounds, I will start combat on the next post.

Atlas is very interested in the story Leskni tells. "Well, evil is the name of the game. I will take that over Gaston any day."

DM Shane: No screams as yet. Drow are in their rooms, you are talking with Leskni. I am editing your post to account for this.

Carver grabs Gaston throwing him onto his back, while he does so he yells out, "'Under Attack, trying for the open ground"
Knowing that Gaston's room is close to the ground, Carver, once he has Gaston will put all of his speed into making the area in front of the tree.
To Gaston, "Don't fight me, I need open space to protect you."

Carver's Move is 65' while armored as he is. He will outright run at 4x to put distance between him and Gaston and whatever is coming at them. If he is faster, he'll play keep away until the group gathers at the base of the tree.

Atlas asks Leskni to round up the drow, we're going to be late. "You don't mind that I lean on your for the communications do you? They obviously respect females and it seems like you have the best chance of getting them to do what we need based on last night. They'll just assume I'm beneath you in the pecking order and that's fine as long as we get out of this alive. I don't think they can understand us all being equals based on what you said."

At the Tree Top Inn Atlas, Owen and Leskni go about making ready for the meeting.

Things are different at the bottom branches though. Like a well oiled machine Carver pulls Gaston onto his back, Gaston, who is an excellent horseman in his own right, struggles at first till he realizes what you are doing and then mounts up and draws his sword. He points above Carvers head to an upper branches of the tree and yells There! There do you see...a DROW! Sure enough looking the way he is pointing you see one of the Drow guardsmen putting something away in his armor as he grins down at you from above. He then makes a rude gesture and runs off.
Words of eldrich power and ancient gestures summon forth from 'Osul's hand a wall of wind that seems to come from nowhere and go nowhere but when the clouds hit it they are repulsed. (add 2 rounds till they come into contact with Gaston's group. (3 rounds total now) The two clouds split up each going to try and find a way around the wall of air.

Gastons Manservant James being unarmed and a simple valet shows remarkable presence of mind as he steps backward, opens the door to the dwelling they just exited and steps inside. Olrich pushes a rather stunned Fletcher in behind James and closes the door. He then turns to face the...clouds, with spear leveled and fire in his eye.

Mack has a deep philosophical conversation with himself as he struggles to get his pants on.

Around the Tree various shopkeepers and patrons notice the oddity and word quickly begins to spread that there is an attack going on.
Armand thinks that these may be air elementals.

I continue to head towards where the action is. I'm not sure what I see from my distance, but if I see the drow that Gaston is pointing at, I focus on at least keeping up with that drow, in an attempt to see if I recognize him as one of the guards I've been chatting with.

I throw defense to the wind, and use my Run ability to keep up with keeping the drow in my sights, if that's an option. Knowing Gaston, my first assumption is that it's not as simple as a drow attacking him out of the blue.

OOC: Round 2 of 3 in getting to where the action is.

(d20+17 perception check of 24)

depending on how far this goes, and if I need to get up into the tree more and do some climbing:
(d20+18 acrobatics check of 26)
(d20+5 climb check of 18)

DM Shane: You are still in the house frantically trying to reach the door. you are still 1 round outside of being able to affect anything going on outside the Parties residence or, for that matter, even knowing whats going on outside other than "something" The residence is right beside where Gastons group is now. the 3 round limit was to account for the time it took you to get out of bed, throw your gear on, navigate to the door and reach outside.

Armand shouts, "Atlas, Owen, Leskni! One of the Drow is out and about! Do a head count up there and try to locate him/her!"

Assuming that Gaston's struggles with Carver have momentarily paused Carver's attempt to dash away, Armand then casts Shield of Faith on Gaston (+2 AC for Gaston).

Round 3 Mack is now within melee range. all at the TTT are still 9 rounds out if they wish to join combat, as it stands, since the have not moved to combat they are 10 rounds away.

Leskni, shouts at the doors to the Drows rooms, causing the Drow on guard to present arms and stand protectively in front of the door. Shortly the Captain of the Guard comes out of his room and in broken common asks what is wrong. His hand is resting on his sword. A few seconds after that, Eclyndryl opens her door and queries the captain about what is happening. A qick flurry of drow ensues and Eclyndryl shushes the Captain. She looks at Leskni and smiles. Forgive me, but I heard shouting in the halls, and about, and my Captain could not understand what you were saying. Is there trouble?

Down on the lower levels Carver hauls butt...sorry Gaston..away from the trouble. but also unfortunately from beneath the shelter of the Wind wall. One of the Air elemental quits trying to find a way around the wall and instead bee lines for Carver and his load with frightening speed. it catches up to you before you have take more than a few more steps and transforms into a large whirlwind which engulfs both Gaston and Carver.
(Since Carver is a Size large creature he is not damaged by the winds, other than mussed hair and reduced visibility. but Gaston and all creatures smaller than large must make two(2) reflex saves with a DC of 18 or be damaged and swept up in the vortex.

Mack bursts out of the door to the residence to find a towering column of dust and wind with carver in the midst of it and Gaston hanging by the edge of Carvers armor by one hand to keep himself from being ripped away and swinging his sword at the wind with the other.

Armands spell hits Gaston not a split second before the whirlwind takes him. it's a good thing too, the wind looked strong enough to break his neck.

'Osul in eagle form rises above the scene and sees in the center of the whirlwind...an eye of calm.

Owen moves toward the sounds of Howling winds and shouts but is at least a 10 rounds away...unless more creative methods of getting there can be devised.

"I am not sure what is happening, but apparently a Drow has been spotted where they should not be, I see three of you here, could you please tell me where your assistant is?"

Assuming the assistant presents herself (which makes all 4 Drow that we know about, right? :

"Possibly some other Drow accompanied you? Or you have enemies amongst the Drow who might want to disrupt these talks? It is also possible that somebody has just disguised themself as Drow in order to throw blame on you"

Leskni will proceed to look closely at all the Drow to make sure that they are the ones that she has met. She will also smell all the Drow who are here. I'm sort of assuming that everybody has their distinct smell and, to somebody with scent, these odors are about as obvious as different.

In either case, hopefully that counts as interacting so she should get a save if there is some illusion magic going on. I'd prefer that you roll that for me so I the player don't know. My bonus is +4.

Pretty much regardless :
"You should all stay here where I can help protect you until we find out what is going on. Possibly as importantly, I can bear witness to your non involvement in whatever is going on."

Leskni then goes into the Drows quarters and shuts the door behind her. Pella assumes a large battle form and then gets to however high a position he can get to in the suite.

We did check the suites before. How many exits are there from the suite? At any rate, all of us go to the most defensible part.

Summary (there was a lot of text above)
1) I check how many Drow are here and try to make sure they're the RIGHT Drow
2) Try to make sure no illusion magic here
3) Prep for combat. If time allows, will cast reduce person on myself

from the base of the tree it is roughly 100' to the first branches. The Tree Top Tavern is right at the 500 ft mark, luckily it's built near the trunk, as is your house and Gastons room. but with the taper of the tree the TTT is inward to the trunk center about 150ft. from your position. There are ladders and paths built and "grown" into the trees trunk and lifts and climbing ropes at other places. in other words it's quite a ways. it's hard to explain the scale and scope of the tree to good effect.

A short while after Eclyndryl comes out of her room, the Last guard comes out of the guards room hastily buttoning his trousers and nodding apologies to Eclyndryl. He holds his stomach, looks pained and says boiled cabbage in heavily accented Common. He takes his place with the other guard under the scowles of both the captain and Eclyndryl.

Down below Atlas heads for the commotion While Carver breaks free of the Whirl wind and charges back into it, You feel your lance connect with something that is not quite solid and not quite air, Gaston has regained his seat and swings at it as well, The thing moans with a sound like a hurricane wind and drops the whirlwind. Mean while the other one has made its way around the wind wall and files after ['Osul] quickly catching him and slamming into him with terrible force. 'Osul takes 20 points of damage from the creatures attack. Everyone else is either too far from the combat to make a difference or trying to spot things long gone and far away.

An arrow pierces the creatures airy side and another misses it by a fair margin. It looks like Boolia the gem merchant has taken up a bow and is adding a bit of help to the battle.

1st Air elemental has now taken 34 points of Damage.

2nd air elemental has taken no damage.

Owen you hear nothing but honest questions about what is going on and a bit of dressing down to the Tardy Drow and admonishments not to eat foreign food from the Captain.

Lenkni you know Eclyndryls smell quite well. and the other Drow kind of form a background to her smell, in other words you can smell them on her from days on the road. The drow that just came out of the room smells a bit more familiar though, and not quite so "drowish" could be the cabbage though. There are windows in the Drows rooms and the doors lock from the inside. the most defensible room is Eclyndryls. as it is a corner room with the tree making up one wall.

Armand Spell hit's the elemental attacking Carver causing it to shoot straight up 100' before turning to come back into the fray. (Carver and all ground based players now have a 1 round respite from attack by the Air elemtal.

Well, the branches are definitely out of my reach then. I won't be leaping 100'. ;) If I can still see the mysterious drow, I do continue to try to follow him and catch up with him though, finding the usual way up in to the tree. If I see Osul-Eagle, and recognize him, I definitely try to coordinate with him, or point out the drow for him to follow.

I keep my eye on the air creatures, wondering what I can do to help there. I don't plan on attacking a tornado with my bare hands, but am keeping my options open.

Just trying to get my thoughts in order. Leskni doesn't know all this yet, but I think that I can reasonably conclude that the Drow who came from the bathroom is the only one who could reasonably have participated in the attack? He was out of sight when I came in. And even he would have needed magical means to get here this quickly (fly, wild shape, dinension door, etc etc etc).

That scent thing bothers me.

Sense motive on that Drow guard. 23 may actually get me something.

Leskni casts her spell. all 4 of the Drow light up, this early you can only tell that they are all carrying magic items, The Drow become very still, and hands move to weapon hilts. Eclyndryl looks at you strangely and says in a voice both concerned and angry Leskni! among my people what you are doing is an act of war!, Please stop!

Owen with fly you can get to the battle in 2 rounds you are within earshot of the elementals this round, The one attacking 'Osul speaks back to you in aurian "Highlight to display spoiler: {Dark man, above summon us, tell us fight, no kill, but make look good. we do, we go home. me swat bird now. }. the second one says, Highlight to display spoiler: { No can stop, no go home till.....uh...when dark man say we go home? } he then drops back into the combat below and slams Carver twice for 23 points of Damage. Gaston swings mightly at the thing, but all he hits is air.

Mack checks to make sure no civilians are in the way, but Miles has trained them well and the non combatants have all made their way inside. Boolia and Miles both shoot at the creature from within one of the shops and both score hits, Boolia's just nicks the creature while Miles pegs it twice for solid hits. Olrich runs up and shoves his spear into it hard enough to pass clean through!

'Osul's spell rips a hole to the elemental plane of Air and two small elementals fly out. one is shaped like a misty bird and the other stormcloud. Just about the time they come out the Large Elemental attacks you, but the small stromcloud elemental interposes its self between you and the large one and is torn apart by the force of it's attack. you have one elemental left and a large sentient cloud breathing down your neck.

Armand speaks a word of power and a light brighter than the sun shoots from his hands, it impacts upon the mass of cloud and wind and cuts through it like a hot knife through butter. The elemental dissipates and is gone.

May I proceed? Or is any spell casting at all forbidden?"

Atlas takes the steps down 2 at a time. and rappels down so fast he heats his hands up. you will be to the level of of 'Osul" in 3 more rounds. you can begin taking shots (if you have a projectile weapon) in one round (long range)

Eclyndryl smiles the kind of smile you give a particularly bright student who just asked a boneheaded question. In my culture the word "enemy" is the same as the word for "stranger" When two houses which have had animosity between them set down to parley, in my culture it is often seen as a good time to attack. someone who casts a detect magic spell, usually covertly, is trying to get a read on what weapons and enchantments are on the group...this is powerful knowledge that gives the offending party valuable tactical intelligence that can give actors a definitive advantage should they think to attack. When such things must be known, the spell casting is often brokered out to a neutral third party. who are only to report that all participants are carrying agreed upon magic items.

Mack wants to reach the battle so bad he wants to use the ol' "throw the halfling" trick, but Armand thinks that the 45' elevation may be too much for him to overcome. instead Mack busies himself making sure that the other delegates are alright. They are, they have piled furniture in front of the door and are peeking out the window.

Armand lets loose with the blazing light of his god once again. it misses the elemental but hits the branch close to it and makes it turn from 'Osul and fly with frighting speed back to Armand. it hits Armand twice for 18 points of damage.

Boolia and Miles both shoot at it, Boolia hits it twice and Miles once. Olrich runs up and gets a good hit with his spear.

Carver charges towards the thing, but misjudges the creatures speed and passes right behind it as it attacks.

Gaston, still on Carvers back, takes another wild swing and misses yet again.

air elemental has taken 37 points of damage and is now at "ground" level with the rest of the party.

Atlas now has 5 rounds to get to the party if he is still using standard transportation means.

Carver takes another swipe at the Air Elemental, but he misses the wispy creature yet again as does Gaston on your back.

'Osul's lightning cracks with a sound like the end of the world as it hit the cloud creature, but this time the charge seems to hurt the thing very little.

Armand has taken

Boolia and Miles[b] hold their fire, as folk are clustered too close to the thing now and the risk of friendly fire is too great.

Armand whips his Glaive out with practiced ease and slices across the things..."middle" with very martial flourish. it's odd hitting an elemental, the "body" is air, and hitting it feels like hitting a strong wind.

Atlas is now four(4) rounds from the battle and closing fast!

I'm feeling like I may have actually hit it this time.... twice!!!!!
