The turtles clear the first corner and swim toward the next. Some of them dip under the water to the displeasure of the fairy and the goblin. Both riders cough as they come back up.
“Sandy and Basketcase are neck and neck coming around the first corner. Burt is following close behind followed by Michelangelo and finally Donatello.”
“What is this! What is this! Donatello is gaining on the whole pack! He is now third behind Michelangelo and Sandy. Are we going to see some more offense any time. They round the short turn then Whoa. Fireball.”
“The illusion of a fiery ball heads toward the back of the pack. It misses Donatello and strikes Burt. Oh that threw the poor creature for a loop.” The turtle sinks under the water and it’s riders tread water till it appears behind the others.

Micah finds himself experiencing a sense of detachment from his surroundings. He is not one for the rowdy, rambunctious press of the crowds and finds himself drawing inward as he is bumped and tossed by the nameless throng. As he discerns the magical artistry behind the turtle race spectacle [spellcraft 18], he is struck with the memory Pesmer and the joy they shared together flying on the magic carpet. Knowing how much that young elfblood would be enjoying these magical events, he is overwhelmed with melancholy at that one's absence.
No longer able to enjoy the races because of the sad memory it evokes, he focuses his will on their task. "Briselda. We must find Briselda" he states aloud to no one but himself.
K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10 d20=16 ; d20+3=16 ; Friday June 17th, 2016 8:52:14 AM
K takes meticulous care of his kit, so is peeved when what he really hopes is wine gets splashed on him. Probably wouldn't bother him if he wasn't already pretty miserable in this place. He grits his teeth and moves on, knowing they have a task to achieve.
...and although he hates to admit it, the race is actually pretty neat. He just pictured a bunch of turtles ambling towards a finish line. He's tempted to stop and watch, but knows it's not a good time.
He keeps his eyes open for Briselda (perception: 16). Is...is that her over there? He points the woman out to Micah, asking if that looks like her. If so, he shimmies his way through the crowd towards her (acrobatics: 16).
Stohp continues to yell and cheer with the rest of the crowd, eyes scanning the arena as she does so. She easily spots Briselda, but also notes that some of her party members are heading over. She decides to let them contact her; disguised as she is approaching Briselda with the rest would just confuse everyone.

Only K is nimble enough to wriggle through the crowd watching the race. The others, though turn their attention away from the turtles ...
Micah is filled with melancholy and turns his thoughts to the lost girl you seek.
Stohp is focused on her too -- and is that HER right OVER THERE? The disguised minotaur decides to let others handle the approach.
Zanderallen wants to join K, but the press of the crowd is just too much! He to watches K's approach.
And as for the girl, once he is closer, K thinks he recognizes her! Yes, she is one of the Hands of Love who showed up after the Jack Tripper fight. [OOC: PLEASE check out the DM Post on April 19. The archive link is at the top of the page.]
The girl seems to recognize you. "You're one of those Silver Shields, aren't you! Are you still tangling with Shredds and his Jack fellows? Is that what that was all about?"

K is slightly taken aback. Was this girl being nice? Well, she seemed to be, so K would return the favor.
"That's right, but it's not like we're nemeses or anything. They were beating an older man on the street, we stepped into stop them, and they seem pretty sore about it. Guess they're not content to let it go."
He offers his hand. "K, Paladin of Flower. Pleased to meet you."

“Alright creatures of the Gardens…” begins the announcer. They have managed to head into turn three with Donatello in the lead followed by Sandy then Michelangelo and Basketcase a close third. After the riders re-mounted Burt; they are coming up from behind. “No way… no possible way.. Burt is pushing through the crowd. What do they have inside that turtle!” As Burt approaches Sandy the goblin releases a wave of Bees that surround the fairy and goblin riding on Sandy. The two riders swing away at the bees as they slip into fourth place behind Michelangelo. “Basketcase strikes Michelangelo with Dismount rider but Michelangelo’s goblin is quick on the draw and Dispels the magic but not before losing the first position to Basketcase. All this action up front but poor Donatello is pedalling behind the group. What is this a Sunday stroll?” The announcer asks.
Meanwhile, K talks to the guard. “Nice to meet you K names Brisilda but most people call me Brizzie. A Paladin of Flower? Zanderallen tried to make it through the crowd but his bulky armor made it difficult. “Why are you wearing armor?” Shouted an angry crowd-member. “You are standing in the way.” Shouted another. “Go Burt!” Shouted a third. He smiles, and continues in normal conversation voice. "Of course, that works both ways." He turns to Martisan. "I think we've made a mistake coming here, Marti. This girl isn't brainwashed, and should be free to do as she pleases." He turns back to Brizzie. "I'm sorry. I wish we could have met under different circumstances, but the truth is your father sent us. He misses you and regrets his weakness. Perhaps you can use his life as an example of what happens when you're a slave to your passions, regardless of the cost to the ones you love." He bows slightly before continuing. "I'll bother you no more with this. The choice is yours to make. I'll pray to Lady Flower to watch and help guide you."
He looks to Martisan expectantly, wondering if she'll agree with his actions. Regardless, K will not bother Brizzie anymore unless the girl continues speaking to him.

[Carl, you need to make a Perception check.]
Missing Briselda's quiet confidence in K (Perception 14), Martisan simply nods and smiles as the paladin introduces them and offers much softer words than expected regarding the Hands of Love. Arching one of her bushy eyebrows at K for a moment, Martisan smiles, winks, and turns back to the guard while digging briefly through her pockets.
"You should at least take the time to speak with your father." she says warmly, again pulling the tiny potted plant from a pouch, which nods thoughtfully in agreement to the halfling's suggestion. "As wonderful as all this passion is..." The little bonsai motions cheerfully to their chaotic surroundings, "It would be a sad sight to see it all driven by painful emotions and feelings of resentment. I've found it's best to face those things head on; the longer old wounds stay open the harder they are to heal." (Diplomacy 19).
Martisan shrugs, laughing and shaking her head "Of course the decision is yours. Passionate youth pining after freedom... hah - I don't think we'll be dragging anyone off today - not that some folks here wouldn't deserve it. Waiting for the girl's response, Martisan glances back to Micah, carrying the alchemist's memento for his daughter.

“I can’t breath,” the announcer says as he breathes heavily into the microphone. “Basketcase is currently in the lead followed closely by Burt then Michelangelo. Sandy and Donatello are coming up the rear.” “Coming around the last corner Michelangelo uses the final offensive spell and strikes Burt with Panic. Burt stops abruptly and begins to turn to the right as the fairy rider fights to keep it moving forward. Brizzie then notices three Hands of Love clerics stepping from the tavern just fifty meters away. She stuffs the scarf into her guard uniform and waits for the clerics. They are dressed to the nines, like an event of queens and kings but at a lowly turtle races. The trio walks toward Brizzie and the Silver Shield. As they begin up the stadium stairs they seem to have a spell on the patrons as they sit and watch. “Sister Catherine… Brizzie mumbled.” “Ummm... those are Hand of Love. So much love attracts attention.”
Dividing her attention between the race and the conversation going on around Brizzie, Stohp grumbles to herself as the three priests show up right next to her companions. All this effort to be sneaky and it just isn't working out; the people she wants to talk to are over there now! "Now take your childish philosophy elsewhere. We're not buying." He stares intently until the sister leaves, then turns to Stohp.

(Sense Motive 27, go nat 20) Zander has had a bad feeling for awhile now but something about these clerics is sending up danger flags in his mind. Acting on his instincts Zander quickly pushes around the clerics and blocks the path of Cole and Micheal leading Briselda away. He holds out his hand to stop the two men saying, "Hold up just a minute, I've got one last thing to say.''And it might be the last chance she has if my intuition is right' Zander thinks to himself.
Turning to Briselda, "I know you said earlier that the Hands weren't controlling you but this looks an awful lot like control to me. Right when we show up bringing news from your father they move in to take you away. Now everyone here keeps talking about love and passion like they're the same thing, and they're not. Passion is selfish, love is giving. And in that selfish passion they'll try to keep you in their fold. Now if you want to go with them of your own free will then I won't stop you. But I would encourage you to step away from the Hands for awhile and think about your father and what you want. If you need any help or want someone to talk to the Silver Shield is here for you."
Zanderallen will do his best to body block the clerics if they try to push past and talk over any attempt to interrupt him. He is not going to back down until he feels he gets an honest answer from Briselda.
Stohp doesn't wait for K to talk to her and giver away her current disguise; she's already following them! Before she can begin her spell, Zanderallen stops the clerics and gives his final word to the girl. "That works too." Martisan says quietly with a smile. "That woman - Sister Catherine - seems like she's hiding something." The small bard shakes her head and keeps her mouth shut, allowing K's response to stand after Sister Catherine's offer of help. "But, by all appearances, the Hands of Love are doing nothing wrong here - seems they might actually be a silver lining to the Turtlebrook's gambling nonsense going on in the Gardens."
Don't Let Me Down (DM Mstitt) Thursday June 23rd, 2016 9:53:09 PM Micah is distressed and sends a message to Martisan hoping she can send an additional message to Brizzie. The message will let her know the Shields have her back.
K confronts Catherine. The other two clerics are near the bottom of the steps. He threatens the cleric which causes her to step back. “I’m not sure what you think this childish philosophy is but we are a compassion group. The Hands of Love would never intentionally hurt someone, especially Brizzie.”
“Sounds to me, your group is less interested in delivering a message and more interested in a rescue mission. I assure you, Brizzie is free to leave.”
K then asks Stohp to follow Brizzie.
Martisan raises her hands and concentrates but is interrupted by Zanderallen. Martisan is suspicious but holds off on any judgement.
Sister Catherine looks at Martisan. Her face blushed with red. “Oh, you have us all wrong young man. We do not condone gambling of any sort. We are only here to provide for those that need us.” She stretches her arms out to indicate all the people around her. “Some say we are a cult but I say that is wrong. You may be the ones that are bound by your uncertainties. Love conquers all. Even the smallest of hearts. If you don’t mind we have things to do.” Sister Catherine turns and begins down the stairs.
Zanderallen senses that the clerics are up to no good. They are only interested in what’s best.” Now, I need to prepare for my dedication if you don’t mind.“ Brizzie then touches the other clerics gently and turns away. He finds his center like his father taught him. It's a skill, not something that comes naturally to him. He spent years learning it before he finally managed to do it. He breathes in, breathes out, and lets it go.
"Let's move on. We have a tavern to visit and an old man to save from more beatings."
Easily weaving through the crowd (acrobatics 9) Stohp follows, continuing to keep an eye on Brizzie while trying to remain undetected (Stealth 28).
Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 21/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 7 Party Treasury Friday June 24th, 2016 4:41:41 PM
Zanderallen, despite every fiber of his being yelling to get Briselda out, knows that he has done all he can in the present situation. Letting the clerics pass and rejoining his friends he hopes some of what they said made it through to the girl. "You're right K. Although that cleric, if she even deserves such a title, is hiding something. I really don't like the sound of this dedication. But let's go see what other good we can do here. And if we find proof the Hands are connected to anything rotten maybe we can bring that to Briselda and show her they are in the wrong."
We can Work it Out (DM Mstitt) Friday June 24th, 2016 9:48:15 PM Micah feels confronting the clerics is a bad idea. He feels comfortable as long as Brizzie is fine. Micah shouts at Brizzie but she doesn’t hear him. She disappears into a door beside the tavern. K has had enough of the interaction with the clerics and wants to move on. He tries to breath and move on. Stohp weaves through the crowd disguised. Zanderallen lets the clerics go. He agrees with K and wants to move on.
The turtle race is finished. The winning turtle and it’s riders are invited to join the crowd on the island in the center of the track. The whole crowd cheers as the group walks over to the tavern. Brizzie and the clerics disappear through a door on the left side. On the right is a larger door that leads into the Last Stone tavern. Large open windows and tables sit outside. Gamblers and other barflys sit in small tables. A group of men sit at the bar and Matheus meets them at the door. “Friends! Did you see that race? It was awesome, right?” A large man approaches Matheus and claps him on the shoulder. “One eye,” he begins as Matheus recoils uncomfortably. “The Turtlebook wants to see you right now.” “Oh, Bryce you have to give me ten minutes with my friends here.” The large man growls then leaves. He watches the Seer carefully. “Step in… step in... “ Matheus urges. In a whisper, Perception vs DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: {Those guys over there are the commissioners. Stohp hesitates a moment after the clerics walk into the door. It's hard to stealthily follow someone through a door, especially if you aren't supposed to be in there. After a moments thought though she just walks in like she belongs, mentally preparing her cover story if there's a door guard that stops her or if the priests are right there wondering who's following them.

Martisan nods as Matheus explains the situation, then steps in front of him as he attempts to slip out from the tavern (CMB 19. heh). "Running from the bookies and the debt is no way to deal with this problem - we've seen where that leads," she says quietly. "And I've had enough subterfuge and surprises for one day." Martisan's gaze roves over the nearest strangers to their company, searching for someone more interested than they should be, hoping for a sign from Stohp, and nervous, now, to find hidden enemies (Perception 27). "Without some other form of recompense or improvement, there's no justice in refusing to pay debts willingly taken; no matter how wrongly applied they may be." Martisan says finally, her demeanor suddenly firm.
After a moment, she shakes her head. Why does he keep coming back...?
"We can cover those costs for now, if another arrangement can't be reached with the Turtlebrook." she continues to whisper through a sigh, with a glance to her three companions. "We might not get a better chance to meet with the man in charge around here."

However, he agrees with Martisan. He doesn't get to dishonor his obligations just because it's an illegal gambling ring policed by his nemeses.
Truth be told, K's not really sure why it's important they meet with this guy anyway. Maybe he missed something while he was busy focusing on Briselda. He'll let his companions steer the events with the turtlebook.
Extra: The Note From Eldrich (DM Cayzle) Sunday June 26th, 2016 10:48:17 AM
K might consider that while a good memory is not a prerequisite for paladinhood ... well, it does not hurt.
He recalls the note that Eldrich left with the party [OOC: May 19]:
As Zander tucks away his gold, he sees a parchment he did not put there. It is a note from Eldrich! It reads, “My friends, forgive my hasty departure and this note. I admit that I am ashamed for myself and my friend. But I am hoping to ask you for a favor. When you get to the arena, seek out the Turtlebook. Avril can help you find him, but he commonly conducts business in the Octopus’s Garden. Perhaps you can ask him to consider his terms? Find a way to convince him to reduce our debt? This asks a lot, I know, but I do not fear for you the way I fear for myself and Matheus. With eternal thanks -- Eldrich.”
It seems like Eldrich expected you to see the this Turtlebook before Matheus got back to the Gardens, but the seer seems to have slipped his leash? Uh oh.

We can Work it Out - Part 2 (DM Mstitt) Monday June 27th, 2016 9:03:49 PM Stohp continues to blend in. Martisan steps in front of Matheus. K ,Micah and Zanderallen back him up and also talk about helping with the debt. Bryce stands up. “Hey, don’t let him leave. He is indebted to the Turtlebook. He must pay. Matheus turns when he realizes his escape plan has failed. “Bryce, my friend, listen.” He begins. “I’m not your friend one-eyed human. You were cursed at birth and now you are cursed to be in-debt to the Turtlebook.” Matheus’s single eye focuses on the large bouncer. “I’ve paid my debt. I paid it months ago. Your boss is as crooked as the smile on a Grim.” Bryce steps forward but eyes the group cautiously. “He is using me to see into the future. He is manufacturing my debt, you see.” He says to the group. The large man’s face became red and he shouted. “You are no Seer,” the bouncer shouts. “...but I am. I can tell your future friend.” “I am not your friend. Pay your debt little freak!” He steps forward. The entire tavern stopped and turned. Each one of the well dressed commissioners spun in there chairs and watched. “I will drag you to him,” says Bryce. Suddenly, before anything else happened one of the well dressed commissioners stepped forward. “Wait, please.” He insisted. “My name is Winmore Crimson. I manage the books around her. Turning to Bryce he says with an encompassing gesture that obviously includes the official, Maltheus, and the visible members of the Silver Shield, "Please take us to the Turtlebook now. If this is some chicanery here as Maltheus claims, perhaps shedding some light on the situation might be in order." He moves so as to encourage Bryce to lead the way.

Along the left side of the Turtlebook’s office is a large library of books. Several suits of highly polished armor stand beside a meticulously clean oak desk. Behind the desk a large minotaur stands. His expression sour but none threatening. The minotaur is wearing a polished chain shirt. He is clean shaven and stands straight. He has a soldier air to him.. Very disciplined.
A helmet lays on the desk in front of him. It is layered in thin silver strips that overlap each other. The helmet leaves a small rectangular section for the eyes. Shredds looks at the group, his face void of any emotion.
“Who speaks for this group?”

Micah smiles to himself as he overhears the commissioner's comment to Shredds. The plot thickens. It may be that the Turtlebook would rather keep Maltheus in his debt--just a guess based on that brief conversation there, Micah says softly to his companions after the door closes.
He starts to step up in response to Shredd's question, but when K announces Martisan as their spokesman, he remains silent so as not to imply any lack of solidarity among the group. Rather he decides to watch and listen, especially for any clues as to any potential meaning behind the minotaur's words.
Zanderallens follows everyone in, one hand planted firmly on Matheus' shoulder. Somewhat taken aback by the interior he looks around at the armor appreciatively before seeing Shredds, which almost causes him to double take. 'A military man in this environment. I was imagining a fat greasy merchant. This garden loves its surprises. Better get ready to back up Martisan if anything goes down.' Zander stands at attention behind Martisan, remaining silent and watching the minotaur's reactions.

Stohp looks around the room, taking in the guards, cashiers, and customers (perception 25). She's a bit relived as she was a bit worried they were entering a private area and she'd immediately be called out by the priests. As it is, there is only one other exit, therefore the group she's following has to have gone out of it. A quick glance at the guards shows they have no interest in her (sense motive 11) so she proceeds casually through the room and out the other exit.

Before entering the room, Martisan agrees with Micah's assessment, "Seems like that friendly commissioner is in on it too." she says (Perception 16).
Unceremoniously elected spokesperson, Martisan gives K a sarcastic glance, before dipping a short curtsy to the minotaur. "We're known as The Silver Shield; recent adventurers established on The Fence to help bring peace, love and justice to The Float. We're here, of course, on behalf of Matheus." Motioning with her hands as she speaks, Martisan gestures toward the one-eyed man. "We met the fortune teller outside our base on Lakeview Passage, where he was suffering an unpleasant shakedown by a gang known as the Jack Trippers, who, if I'm not mistaken, are under your employ."
Martisan pauses, letting her words linger as she keeps her gaze firm. "Concerned as we are for the welfare of everyone in our wonderful city, we've come for answers, and hope to also provide some solutions."
Martisan looks to the others, her eyes urging them to add anything they feel she missed.
We can Work it Out - Part 4 (DM Mstitt) Wednesday June 29th, 2016 10:32:33 PM
Stohp continues to follow the clerics and steps out the second door. Immediately, her stomach lurches as she grows in size and reappears on the Gold level. Night approaches within the hour. The clerics and Brizzie are about 300 steps in front of you and to the left. Brizzie seems to be comfortable with her relationship with the other clerics. Azure Junction is moderately quiet, unlike earlier. The gold vendors are packing up. You see others wearing the same garb as Brizzie and her companions. They are collecting into a formation. Brizzie joins them and stands at attention. A few minutes later they march out of Azure Junction.
=====
K throws Martisan under the cart when Shredds asked who the leader is.
Micah overhears the plot before they entered the room. He waits patiently for Martisan to speak.
Martisan glares at K then curtsied politely. She introduces the Silver Shield and tells Shredds they are here for Matheus.
Zanderallen puts a hand on Matheus. He is a bit taken aback by the Turtlebook.
Shredds is Fine in size like everyone in the Octopus’s Garden, but he still somehow manages to towers over the whole group. He thanks Martisan for the introduction.
“How are you Matheus? Have you convinced these people you're a fortune teller? He tried that with me the first time he owed me money. I gave him leeway for his services.”
Matheus, adjusts his bowler hat uncomfortably.
“The Jack Trippers watch my gold. I am not responsible for their actions outside of the Gardens. I’m am concerned for their welfare as far as my gold is concerned.”
The armored minotaur turns to the old seer. “So Matheus, you got my message?”
“Yes, sir. You wanted me to find you some able bodies. So I found you some.”
Shredds looked over the group.
“There are only three here,” he says sternly.
“I’m sorry, sir. There were four but one went another direction.”
Matheus fumbles for words as the minotaur walked around the desk in the center of the room. Shredds stops at the library of books and picks up an old, dusty copy of the Art of War. “Have you ever read the ‘Art of War,’ any of you?”
Reading from the book, “ ‘Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.’ One of my favorite quotes. Anyway …”
Shredds looks at you all. “Understand,” he says, “I’m a man of business, but even I do not like what the Hands of Love are doing here. I want your help to get rid of them. Their chief here is the Commissioner of Security. I want him out, and I want to put my own man in that job, not some zealot cultist. But I want you to do that job for me. I’m a neutral party, officially. You do that for me, and I’ll get you a chat with that girl you want to meet, and I’ll forgive the old gent’s debt. If he wants to gamble here in the future, he just has to do some foretelling for me.”
“You wanna kill him, well, ridding the Wold of evil is a paladin’s work, amirite? Or maybe disgrace him, or convince him to quit, whatever you can manage.”
“Deal?”

Noting the similar dress and formation Stohp hrms to herself slightly. The group suddenly looks very military and organized, not a good thing in her opinion; people don't usually practice military discipline unless they plan to fight someone.
Momentarily she considers disguising herself as one of their number and she examines the formation to see if there's a slot she can slip into, as well as their uniforms to better mimic the appearance (perception 14). For the moment at least she dismisses the idea; there's to much chance of her messing up and being caught. Still, she alters her disguise some since it's much less convincing now she's back to her normal size. She reverts back to her male Minotaur disguise and follows along at a safe distance, pretending to be a tired, well-to-do merchant heading home (Disguise 33).

As he listens to Shredds lay out his deal Zander faces a conundrum. While the Hands of Love are definitely in need of being removed, it doesn't feel right to replace them with a different form of evil. Shredds even admitted he didn't control the lengths to which the Trippers went. Maybe a counter offer could be proposed.
As Zanderallen begins to speak he moves to the front of the group, "I must say, this is not what I was expecting to hear. And I see just one problem with it. While we have a common enemy in the Hands, we do not stand on common ground. While gambling isn't the best thing, if rich merchants want to come pay the stupid tax that's on them." , now standing directly in front of Shredds, Zander looks him straight in the eye undeterred by the taurs bulk, "However the collection methods of the Trippers are detestable. While your help would be invaluable to bringing down the Hand you must first agree to rein in the Trippers before I will work with you. If that isn't agreeable to you then we will go our own way. Do we have a deal?" With that Zander holds out his hand to Shredd waiting to see what he says in response and maintaining eye contact.

Quiet through his request, Martisan frowns at Shredds. "You ask a lot to settle a simple gambling debt." She says plainly. "How much, exactly, does Matheus still have on your books?"
Martisan nods as Zanderallen makes their counter-offer, but places a hand gently on the paladins arm as he states the terms.
The halfling shakes her head with a smile not reflected in her eyes. "As you noted, we have a personal interest in the Hands of Love, one girl in particular. We have, however, already met with this girl, and can do so again, I'm sure, without your help. More concerning, though, is your desire to reduce the already lacking security in the Gardens, which, other than this Commissioner and the Hands acting as security forces, seem to already be in the palm of your hand. We will need more than your word, and reining in the Jack Trippers is a good start, but it's just a start."
Martisan glances to her companions before continuing. "We were attacked shortly after we arrived in the Gardens, and it was the followers of Caeroldra who rescued us from your thugs - and now you expect us to deal with the Hands for you? I'm used to being underestimated, but that's a near insulting 'business' proposition - we stand little to gain working with you, while you reap significant rewards."
Although this could be an opportunity to deal a significant blow to the Hands, I doubt Briselda will like us any more if we put one of her leaders out of a job. Martisan thinks as she looks again to Micah, K and Zander. At the very least, this Turtlebook could offer some better terms.

Shredds erupts, picks up the large man by the collar. “Each man’s take is now halved. You will go without pay for a week.” He sets him down. He returned to the group. “How’s that?” “Deal?”
Martisan asks about Matheus’s debt. “Your friend here is quite popular around here. Has he ever given you a reading. "You have brought us here on false pretenses. Why should we trust you at all?"
He pauses to let his words sink in then continues, "You can start building that trust by filling us in on the entire situation with the Hands of Love. What is there history here? What is their organization? You say that their chief of security is evil. What evidence do you have of that? You seem to know a lot about them...and us. Tell us more of your sources.
Regarding your proposition: you seem to take us for fools. You offer to free Maltheus of his debts, yet it appears that he is working on your behalf. Knowing that he deceived us--at the very least by not telling us the full situation--why should we now be concerned about securing his freedom from you? Even if it were secured, how could we be assured you would not entice him again to be in your debt?
And, as Martisan here as already stated, we do not need you to find the girl we seek."
After pausing for a bit, Micah finishes with, "What can you do for us? It appears, very little."
With that, he withdraws a half step awaiting any response.

You think she is safe in the hands of the clerics?” “Any resemblance of humanity that you saw in her when you ran into her in the stadium… do you think that’s going to be there when you meet her again? Do you understand was total indoctrination is? I had a mole within the Hands of Love for four month.. Four months? I lost him within two weeks and haven’t heard a thing.” “Is it your impression that the Hands of Love have always been a part of Octopus Gardens? They have not. I may not be the most honest creature here but the Hands of Love started a week long celebration of Love four months ago. In that time they indoctrinated all five commissioners. I have managed to replace only two. My methods, are not up for judgement by the way, but are necessary to protect the Gardens. I will do whatever I can to protect the Gardens from this invasion. If you have any sense of humanity and compassion for this girl I urge you to also do anything to protect her.” Shredds paused. “I only ask one favor.”
K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10 Saturday July 2nd, 2016 1:05:13 PM
K steps forward. His turn to speak.
"He's right, unfortunately. I'm not sure all of you can appreciate how insidious the Hands of Love are." He glances sideways at Shredds. "Though you should probably take some responsibility, seeing how you and yours created this place to profit off people's passions. It's not really surprising the Hand was drawn here."
He breathes deeply, not at all sure that he's about to make a wise decision. "We aren't assassins, but I'm willing to hear you out. If we have an opportunity to hurt the Hands of Love, I'm willing to take it. Of course, I can't speak for the rest of the Shield..."
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14 d20+6=16 ; d20+6=24 ; Sunday July 3rd, 2016 10:05:43 AM
Noting the failed pickpocket attempt (perception 16-4=12) Stohp hesitates a moment before continuing on. I don't like how obvious that was. she thinks to herself. Either he's never done this before, or he wanted me to notice and follow him. If the first I can ignore him, if the later he's probably leading me into a trap. It's definitely time to leave before the Hands notice me.
She notes his appearance and keeps her eye out for him on her way back to the location of the races (perception 20). She'll stop just outside the alley rather than try to enter the place again.
Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 11/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14 Sunday July 3rd, 2016 3:32:21 PM
While she normally wouldn't bother trying to drag around furniture built for creatures twice her size, Martisan takes advantage of her relative increase in stature in the Gardens to pull a chair out from the corner. Setting it off to one side, she sits in front of the desk. "For starters, you should go easier on your men." She says to Shredds.
"Why do you think the Hands' 'invasion' is going so well? All they preach is love and passion, while you're over here cutting everyone's pay. Your own men want to switch sides, forget about all the passionate gamblers. If force is the only tool you use with your men, it's the only tool they'll use with others. Instead of cutting their pay, give a bonus to each group that brings in their share without hurting anyone or causing trouble. And make sure the Jack Trippers we ran into in that alley are well taken care of - they bit off more than they could chew when they tangled with us."
Micah (John) HP: 16/16 AC: 15/10/15 CMD:13 Sunday July 3rd, 2016 10:51:22 PM
Micah also grabs a chair and takes a seat. Sitting on its front edge, leaning forward with his forearms resting on his thighs, his body language is clearly stating that he is ready to listen now that some ground rules have been laid.
Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 21/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 7 Party Treasury Monday July 4th, 2016 8:14:46 PM
Zander starts to help Martisan move her chair before realizing that in this place everyone is the same size, "Let me... never mind." He then grabs a chair for himself and pulls it up to Shredds' desk. "Let's talk business then." He sits back in the chair comfortable and ready to listen.
Don't Let Me Down - (DM Mstitt) Monday July 4th, 2016 9:30:53 PM Stohp heads back to the alley. The vendor has characteristic, gold-colored hair, a bit hard not to notice. He looks back and winks as you turn away.
K tentatively agrees with Shredds. Shredds snorts, “I didn’t create this,” he says. “This is entertainment. Gambling is a passion for many of us in the Float. Sure, you may not like to gamble but at least one of you lost a little bit today. It was a fun chance. Michelangelo won with a little bit of shell left. There is a bit of a balance that needs to be kept.” “I’m not asking for an assassination, necessarily. Not everyone can take a life. I need him removed somehow so I can retake the Gardens.” Zanderallen starts to help then realizes the chairs are easy to move. He then sits back to talk business. Martisan grabs the large chair and scoots it forward. “Easier on my men?” Shredds replies. “I’m only hard on Bryce. He runs my men. He’s a bit hard-headed.” “A bonus,” the minotaur bursts with laughter. “We ain’t running a rich man’s palace here.” After a moment he stops, his jovial face sinks and he becomes serious. “I’m sure all the Hands have left the Garden’s by now. They have a place of worship on the Fence level. I would start there. The commissioner's name is Six, he is a priest. You would have to speak to a couple of them to find him.”
“Oh, and if you’re done with the questions the Exit is out of the tavern and one door down. You will see the cashiers and my men. “ With that Shredds walked back over to the book shelf and began to dust his books.
Micah (John) HP: 16/16 AC: 15/10/15 CMD:13 Monday July 4th, 2016 10:48:48 PM "And what of the seer's debt?" asks Micah, making no shift in his position and giving no indication that he is ready to be dismissed.
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14 d20+3=22 ; d20+2=10 ; Tuesday July 5th, 2016 12:24:21 PM
Stohp sets up in a dark corner opposite of the alley (stealth 22), observing those exiting the garden without (hopefully) herself being observed (perception 10). There's not real reason for it, mostly she's just curious. Maybe she'll recognize an important personage enjoying some illegal gambling (knowledge local 8). Nothing better to do while she waits.
K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10 Tuesday July 5th, 2016 12:50:34 PM
"I think we're the seer's debt, Micah." K isn't happy with the way this turned out, but he's relieved the threat the Hand poses is apparent to those in charge of this place. Maybe K won't have to shut it down after all.
They have a mission, and K is eager to get out of here and start it. He figures his chatty new friends will have a few more things to say. He patiently waits for them to finish.
Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 21/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 7 Party Treasury Tuesday July 5th, 2016 2:29:25 PM
Satisfied that Shredds has enough morals, barely, to be allowable to work with Zander is eager to head off after the Hands. Until Micah raises his last question. 'I don't know what I'd do with the level headedness of Brother Micah', he thinks to himself. He remains seated and waits for Shredds response.
Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 11/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14 Tuesday July 5th, 2016 5:26:39 PM
Martisan chuckles as Zanderallen starts to lend her a hand. "Funny that we're all tiny, but here I am bigger than usual." She laughs, giving the chivalrous paladin a wink.
Martisan is quiet as the group continues discussing the Hands of Love and Shredds' deal, taking mental notes to jot into her journal later. With a sigh, she slides out of her chair. "Appreciate the information, Mr. Turtlebrook." She nods her thanks to the minotaur. "We'll see what we can do about that security commissioner for you - you keep this little enterprise in check, and we'll be in touch."
She stops at Micah's question, standing next to the cleric's chair. "Y'know I'm not real clear on Matheus' debt either." She says, "You said this deal will square that away, but you also said the cost of his readings here is becoming a burden - are you saying that you owe him gold?" She shakes her head at the strange politics they've found themselves in, also waiting for the commander's response
Crying, Waiting, Hoping - (DM Mstitt) Tuesday July 5th, 2016 9:52:22 PM Stohp waits patiently for the others to reappear. She blends in nicely. The interesting thing to notice about the sudden appearance of individuals is not the obvious white flash but the uniform. Looks like employees of the Garden’s wear a unique set of green and yellow clothing. Each one seems to bring a bag with them and sets it close to Stohp’s hiding spot. If any of them noticed you they were too tired to care. Soon, an awful smell wafts into your nose. Perception vs. DC 10+Highlight to display spoiler: {Each employee drops a bag of trash against the wall next to you. There is a pile building.}
Micah Asks about Matheius’s debt but K answers his question. K is happy to have a new mission and eager to leave the Gardens. Zanderallen feels the same and waits for Micah Martisan winks at Zanderallen. She listens to the others, taking mental notes. Shredds walks beside the book shelf and turnsWith his back to his guest, “I owe this man nothing,” Shredds says with a growl. “The predictions are a burden at times. This one-eyed gentleman, with his weird rounded hat, is difficult.” Shredds calls for Bryce to lead the group back through the tavern. “Please give my friends here 50 gp a piece for their assistance. Thank you.” He then thanks you and waits for you to leave.
Micah (John) HP: 16/16 AC: 15/10/15 CMD:13 Tuesday July 5th, 2016 10:47:07 PM "Discussion does not imply a commitment," responds Micah to K without taking his gaze from the minotaur. "Although he mentioned, we never got an actual commitment."
After Shredds makes his statements, he rises and states, "Then that confirms that you will trouble Maltheus no more. Very well, then." With that he departs.
When Bryce attempts to hand him the money he says, "Give it to the seer. I am not beholding myself to your boss, but since he is willing to part with it, there is no reason for him to keep it."
K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10 Wednesday July 6th, 2016 8:52:07 AM
Fifty gold just to do what he was going to do anyway? Seems like easy money, and K could use it. Still, he pauses when Micah refuses. The priest was far wiser than K was.
"Hold on to mine, Bryce. I'll come for it after we've addressed the Hand."
There. Not beholden, still gets the gold if this pans out. That's a good compromise. At least, that's what he tells himself.
K goes ahead & leaves, still ready to be rid of this place. He's got a lot to think about.
Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 11/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14 Wednesday July 6th, 2016 4:26:22 PM "A two-fifty gold advance will help ensure our success, and also evens the terms." Martisan says with a parting nod and smile to Shredds. "That is, of course, counting fifty gold for our fifth member currently gathering information." She takes two of the shares from Bryce and tucks them into her pack.
"Gotta keep Pesmer proud." She says with a wink to Zander and Micah, "And it might be best for us to wait & give the gold to Matheus after this is all sorted out." She gives the seer a sideways look, less certain about his loyalties after luring them to do Shredd's heavy lifting and erase his own debt.
Martisan heads out of the office and past the counters to exit the Gardens.
Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 21/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 7 Party Treasury Wednesday July 6th, 2016 6:38:33 PM
Zanderallen heads out of Shredds office and turns down the money Bryce offers. "I'm not going to take blood money for the removal of the Hands. However it can be put to use elsewhere. Give it to the nearest temple to Flower to aid her followers in combating the teachings of the Hand." Hoping the money doesn't end up in Bryce's drinking fund but not caring, so long as he isn't bought like a mercenary, Zander follows his friends out of the gardens.
A Hard Day's Night - (DM Mstitt) Wednesday July 6th, 2016 9:36:32 PM Micah protests a bit. He asks if Matheus will not have any more troubles. “Matheus, will have no troubles with me. You all have a good day. They are closing up the Garden. I need to finish up a couple things before I get trapped here for the night. Bryce grins as Micah and K refuses the payment. K tells Bryce to hold onto the money. He is happy to do that. Martisan takes the fifty gold and a portion for Stohp. Martisan advise they wait on giving anything to Matheus. Zanderallen also turns down the offer and leaves. Bryce leads the group out into the tavern. It’s mostly empty but for a bartender wiping up the bar. Outside the door you notice that the crowd has mostly disappeared. There are a couple stragglers. Once you step out the door you notice the river of water that used to be the racetrack is dry. The large house in the center of the track is locked up and the windows are shut. “The exit is through this door. There is a second door at the end of the room. There are still some cashiers in the cages if any of you won anything.” Bryce says. Bryce opens the door revealing the Cashier’s cages on the left and a couple Jack Tripper thugs pulling guard duty. The guard seem uninterested in anything. They are anxious to go home. The cashiers are cleaning up as the few remaining patrons pass through. (OOC: I’m going to push you through the door. Not a fan but I want to move us ahead.) Once you step through the door you stomach kisses your throat for seconds then drops to your knees. Outside, you notice it’s dark. I pile of trash sits next to the wall on the other side of the alley. A stranger stands waiting for you.
Micah (John) HP: 16/16 AC: 15/10/15 CMD:13 Wednesday July 6th, 2016 9:42:06 PM
When Micah sees that Bryce is keeping his share, he grabs it out of his hand and gives to Maltheus. "I said, give it to the seer," he says firmly without raising the volume of his voice.
He then departs without a further word.

K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10 d20=19 ; Thursday July 7th, 2016 8:14:26 AM
"I am very glad to be out of there," says K to no one in particular. He's eager to get some sleep, then pay a visit to his temple. He has questions to ask of the priests there. That, and he should check on his parents.
Before that happens, someone appears to be waiting for them. Is it too dark to see who it is (perception: 19)?
Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 11/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14 Thursday July 7th, 2016 3:55:02 PM "Yeah, I think I've had my fill of the Octopus Gardens for a while." Martisan agrees. She sighs inwardly when she sees the person waiting for them. Haven't we dealt with enough miscreants and petitioners for one day...? Hoping the stranger isn't there for them, Martisan ignores it and begins heading back to the warehouse.
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14 Thursday July 7th, 2016 5:39:16 PM
Stohp emerges to greet the party, carefully stepping around the bags of garbage. She's dropped her disguise, allowing them to instantly recognize her. "I have news, and I'm sure you have things to share as well. Not here though; lets head back to HQ."
Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 21/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 7 Party Treasury Thursday July 7th, 2016 7:42:17 PM
Heading out with the others, Zander almost reflexively draws his hammer upon seeing a stranger waiting for them after the day he's had. But when the stranger turns out to be Stoph he almost runs up and gives her a hug, glad to be back in the normal world. Settling for a smile and warm greeting, "Good to see you again Stoph, a meeting at HQ sounds like a perfect plan.", he steps out towards home.
Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 11/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14 Thursday July 7th, 2016 8:47:55 PM
The tired annoyance in her eyes is washed away by relief, and Martisan's ragged demeanor seems to lighten a bit as she steps lively to join Stohp and match the rest of her friends' pace as they head back to the Fence. "You'd be surprised to see the Turtlebrook!" She starts excitedly, before giving Stohp a second look and a sheepish shrug. "Maybe not that surprised, but still - he's as intriguing as the rest of the Gardens, and likely all the more dangerous for it." She says before again falling silent, her rising exhaustion revealing a slight limp favoring her right hip.
A Hard Day's Night - Part 2 - (DM Mstitt) Thursday July 7th, 2016 9:27:17 PM Micah grabs his share back from Bryce and gives Matheus the gold. Matheus takes it with a meek thank you, guilt written all over his face.
Stohp [OOC: Still disguised, right?] waits for the others. She watches as they all pop back to normal size.
K is relieved to be out of the Garden and back to the Float. The dark figure looks familiar but you can’t quite put your finger on who it is ... then you realize that it was Stohp all along! Boy, that disguise item does work! Martisan has had a fill of the Garden’s. She is exhausted. She ignores the stranger and hopes they are not in for more trouble. Stohp steps out of the darkness and drops her disguise and greets everyone. Zanderallen almost grabs his hammer but is excited when he realizes it’s Stohp Martisan is relieved when she recognizes Stohp. She tells Stohp a little bit about Shredds, the Turtlebook, but is happy to be heading home for rest.
Out in the alley from which you entered the Octopus’s Garden, you see a couple fairies as well as the snake-man who was “slain” in the enchanted venue. He had been sitting against another wall. He looks at you shamefaced, whispers, “No hard feelingss, right?” and then quickly slinks off.
The fairies cheerfully send you on your way: “Comebacksoonandvisitusagain! We’rehavingaspecialcelebrationforMaskDaycomingup!”
The walk back to the Fence is uneventful, although you may be surprised anew at the increasing grime on the street and soot in the air as you descend deeper into The Big Float. Back on Lakeview Passage, the whiff of fish wafting up from the docks may actually be refreshing in comparison. And as you walk the roadways of the Fence, you see the familiar rogues and thugs that leave you alone only because of your growing reputation here ... or because of the way you wisely grip your weapons as you walk past.
And here you are at your lodgings after a long day. Your converted warehouse beckons, and the prospect of getting off your feet appeals. But wait! You see two figures lurking around your front door. Well, maybe that does them an injustice, but they seem to be waiting for you -- a medium figure and a small one.

Micah (John) HP: 16/16 AC: 15/10/15 CMD:13 d20+3=6 ; Thursday July 7th, 2016 10:28:01 PM
Micah is ready to return to relative safety and happy to be a normal size again. He watches to make sure Maltheus is safely departed before heading back.
He waves at the snake-man before he slinks off. "Interesting that he waited for us to tell us that," he says to the others. Micah is not so foolish to be oblivious to potential threats; nonetheless he spares little attention to the ruffians that prudently avoid them.
So much for a rest, thinks Micah as he sees the two waiting for him. When he notices them, he stops to takes some time to inspect them, but finds himself distracted by the prospect of returning to there haven. He stands easily poised and balanced but with his hands by his side rather than posed near his weapon.

Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14] Friday July 8th, 2016 8:28:35 AM
As the group approaches, you can hear the "larger" of the two attempt to whisper to the other, "Hey, I think that's them. Go ask them." He elbows the other and takes half a step back, almost stumbling over a grey cat that's walking between his feet.
Appearance: Dorbin is a small fellow, small even for a half-elf. He stands 5’6”, but at 100 pounds, there’s not a lot to him. He is usually seen wearing grey robes that just don’t fit him right. If he gets robes that fit his upper body, they don’t cover his legs. If he gets robes long enough for his legs, there is just too much material in the body part. He usually looks like he is wearing robes that are just too big for him. He looks like a small human, but the silver eyes betray his heritage, if you can get him to look at you long enough to see them. There is a small, light crossbow that he normally carries to keep away some of the bandits, or at least hope they will look for an easier target. Almost always underfoot is his grey cat familiar named Emily Jasmine.
K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10 Friday July 8th, 2016 9:46:38 AM
K is not in the mood to deal with more strangers. He reminds himself that everyone deserves love, then wonders why he's had to remind himself of that so often lately. Maybe his ideas about being a paladin aren't matching up with the reality. Maybe he was just tired and needed to sleep.
"Yes, it's us. How can we help you?" is all he says.
Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 21/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 7 Party Treasury Friday July 8th, 2016 4:29:54 PM
Really wanting to get inside and get some rest Zanderallen sighs a little on seeing two figures standing at their doorstep. Hoping to throw them off their guard in case they are trying anything he marches straight up to the taller of the two before he can hide behind his smaller companion. Holding out his hand he says, "If you're looking for the Silver Shield you've found us. The name is Zanderallen. Who might you be?"
'Strange fellow, looks like he could use a tailor.', he thinks to himself.
(OOC: Welcome Jerry and Jeff, remember the correct answer if you want to get hit with a hammer is, "We're with the Hands of Love." :) )
Bobwise (Jerry) Friday July 8th, 2016 5:38:25 PM
The smaller young man steps forward boldly, dressed in an explorer's type outfit complete with backpack, bedroll, and lots of pouches. He is short and rotund with shocking black hair that stands straight up. His face is animated. For a second his expression freezes with concern.
"You guys look tired. We could have picked a better time, Dorbin, but we're half in it now. We'd better just plunge ahead.
"I'm Bobwise Bumblebottom, a wizard with papers to prove it and yes you may laugh at my name. It won't bother me. This is Dorbin, my friend, and a very good self taught wizard. He's a conjurer and I'm an evoker so we're the same, but different..so to speak."
He smiles letting his excitement show, despite himself. Then he just lets it all gush out.
"We have heard of you! We are locals like you! We think you are awesome! We want to join the Silver Shields!"
He lets his huge halfling smile loose upon the group and can't seem to stand still.
"...uh, Right Dorbin?"
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14 Friday July 8th, 2016 8:56:05 PM
Normally Stohps' paranoid habits would have her assume they were spies sent by the Hands now that the Hands are aware of them. Tonight however she's just to tired. Sighing, she kneads her brow as she speaks, "Another pair of hopeful applicants? We need to make a form or something, 'fill out and sign at the x for consideration, we'll get back to you in 1d4 days.'"
Heroes Welcome (DM Cayzle) Friday July 8th, 2016 10:57:53 PM
The Silver Shield has met two mages seeking to join the group. And wizardly talent is currently a needed commodity for the adventurers. Do our protagonists open their arms in a warm welcome, as true heroes do?
Martisan is too exhausted to speak!
Micah is also silent, but at least somewhat alert.
Stohp is grumpy and even a bit rude!
K is curt but at least polite. "Yes, it's us. How can we help you?"
Zanderallen marches up and sticks out a hand. "If you're looking for the Silver Shield you've found us. The name is Zanderallen. Who might you be?"
The small half-elf, Dorbin, is perhaps a bit daunted by the cold shoulders? He nudges his friend and urges *him* to talk.
And he chooses wisely. The well-equipped halfling mage, Bobwise, introduces the two mages and gladly gets to the point: "We have heard of you! We are locals like you! We think you are awesome! We want to join the Silver Shields!"
What say the heroes to that?
The early evening setting sun shines down and into the alley. A small local boy-child runs up. You may have seen him at Greatbelly's place. He stands breathless and then delivers his message:
"You adventurers, Grok says to tell you that he got a side of dire kine in on special delivery, and the eatin's pretty good if you want to come by for dinner." The boy stands still after delivering his memorized message. Sense Motive check DC10 - Please Highlight to display spoiler: {He is hoping for a tip.}
Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 11/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14 Saturday July 9th, 2016 12:44:52 AM
Standing behind her companions, Martisan snorts quietly when the halfling says his name. She returns his smile, with a bit less enthusiasm, and nods, "Bumblebutt and the Clutz?" She shakes her head playfully, still smiling. "Sorry. We are a bit tired, but glad to meet fans and Silver Shield hopefuls all the same. Name's Martisan. Pleased to meet you, Dorbin and Bobwise."
She turns to the others after the boy delivers his message. "Can't say I know what 'dire kine' is, but I'm all for taking some time to meet these brave wizards and unwind at the Fatted Calf. What do you guys say?"
Bobwise (Jerry) Saturday July 9th, 2016 10:22:36 AM
With a start, Bobwise glances quickly to see how Dorbin reacts to being called a clutz. Not wanting to exacerbate the situation he quickly adds, "I'm buying then!"
After a second, he adds, "This is very exciting!"
And after another second, "So have you been in combat today? You do look bone weary."
Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14] Saturday July 9th, 2016 10:55:48 AM
When Zanderallen steps forward, Dorbin tries to stand up straight and tall, but actually just swims in the too-large robes. As he starts to attempt to answer, Bobwise steps forward and babbles on about how excited they are to finally meet the Silver Shields. His face turns a little red when Bobwise mentions how they thought the Shields were awesome and that they wanted to join. He stutters a little when Bobwise says, "Right, Dorbin?"
When Martisan mentions "The Clutz," he starts to turn away, figuring that the group has rejected him, as usual, but turns back when she apologizes and introduces herself. When she continues about the Fatted Calf, Dorbin's eyes grow larger and he says, "So, do you mean we can go with you? Hey, we're not all that inexperienced, even if we haven't really been out of here. Maybe one day we can get a ship and sail..." He looks around and says, "I mean, you know, if you guys want to..."

"Yea, let's get some chow. You two can come along. We're a little light on arcane magics; maybe there's a place for you here."
K's ready to go right away, but notices the boy's still hanging around (sense motive: 15). He digs around in his pocket & pulls out 2 gold coins. He flips them both to the kid before moving out.

Stohp always enjoys Grok's grub, but doesn't feel like they should discus the days events with strangers. Still it would be rude to shoo them off after her party-mates invited them along. Perhaps they can find some other useful thing to discuss over dinner, though delaying sleep to discuss things after dinner privately is fairly annoying.
"If we're going lets go then."
Bobwise (Jerry) Saturday July 9th, 2016 4:11:43 PM
Once at Greatbelly's place, Bobwise does his best to not dominate the conversation as is his wont. He listens, pays attention, and shows respect.
When it is time to order he asks, "So what is dire kine, good sir? I have never heard of it."
Micah (John) HP: 16/16 AC: 15/10/15 CMD:13 d20+8=26 ; Saturday July 9th, 2016 4:17:49 PM
Micah cannot help but smile at the effusive young wizard. What is it about wizardly training and enthusiasm? he thinks to himself. As he observes Dorbin he feels a bit sorry for his apparent lack of confidence and cannot help but compare him to the last elf blooded arcanist he knew.
Upon hearing the menu at the Fatted Calf, he is a bit amused by the minotaur's lack of knowledge of what a kine is. At first he thinks it might be an unpleasant menu item for her until he considers the name of the restaurant as well as the race of the proprietor.
Noticing the messenger's waiting, he starts to reach for a coin but K beats him to it. His eyes widen when he sees how excessively the paladin tips, but chooses not to comment on it.
He nods agreement to the general consensus to head to dinner with the two newcomers. "There is few better ways than sharing a meal to get to know someone. "The two of you can tell us why you should join our ranks. Perhaps you have references?" Micah offers as he steps toward the Fatted Calf.
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14 Sunday July 10th, 2016 5:07:21 PM
Stohp leads the group to Grok's place were they share a table. Due to the deal with the merchants the shields eat for free, and although K is technically not a Silver Shield yet and the other two are just hopeful applicants, Grok is nice enough to let them eat for free as well. The food, while good, is still a mystery to most of the party.
Stohp disappears in a startlingly short amount of time. As she leans back, sipping her hot tea, she starts the conversation. "So since the topic of new recruits has come up, how does everyone think of K's performance today? Is he in, or do we want to wait until we finish this rigmarole with the Hands of Love before we decide?"
Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14] Sunday July 10th, 2016 5:10:20 PM
Dorbin looks around dumbfounded when the group indicates that he can go with them. When they arrive and are served food without having to pay, his eyes grow even larger and he looks in awe at the other members of the group. When the food is served, he quickly devours much more than you could ever imagine someone of his size eating. In fact, he eats more than a hungry dwarf after a battle...
Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 11/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14 d20-1=6 ; Sunday July 10th, 2016 6:33:36 PM "We got into a little tussle earlier today." Martisan says when Bobwise asks if they'd been in combat, giving her companions a quick look.
"Ending the day 'bone-weary' is an occupational hazard, we're coming to find." She gives the other halfling a wink. "Our last wizard took a vicious bite from a ratman twice your size, and brought the miscreant low with a blow from his staff." She raises her eyebrows at the two newcomers, clearly trying to impress and frighten them. (Intimidate (untrained) 6 doesn't beat DC 12+).
As usual, Martisan feels particularly small in the Fatted Calf, spaced as it is to comfortably fit much larger creatures. In contrast, the halfling herself is active and talkative, poking the inn's regular tauric patrons to draw their attention when her small shouts don't reach through the din. "K's in." She says simply, talking around a mouthful of food. "Think it was around the time we went to Mathieus' shop we agreed. Gotta set a formal ceremony, but we can hash that out later." She swallows and leans forward, nearly kneeling on the table to squint at Stohp. "If you didn't spend all your time slinking around pretending to be this or that person, maybe you'd remember."
As they eat, Martisan does her best to pace the ravenous half-elf, but as her pile of food shrinks from about her own size down to that of Dorbin's cat, she gives the mage a pat on the back. "This one's alright!" She says cheerily to the other Shields, "Guess we'll have to see just how much more magic we need." She finishes with a playful wink to Bobwise.
Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14] d20+4=16 ; Sunday July 10th, 2016 9:26:55 PM
When Martisan attempts to intimidate the two newcomers, Dorbin detects that it is just a ruse (16) and attempts to wink back.
In the inn, Dorbin pauses to smile and drop a piece of food on the ground for his cat, but then continues eating more. He kicks Bobwise under the table and smiles at him.
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14 Monday July 11th, 2016 11:55:22 AM
Stohp grunts at the reminder, annoyed at herself for forgetting but also amused at Martisan's jab. "Well my slinking around did find us some useful info. I'll tell you all about it when we're somewhere more private. As for our new hopefuls, same deal with them we had with K? I'm a bit leery of bringing them along to a fight. No offense guys, but we don't know you and you could easily be spies sent by this group we're investigating. By now they know we're on to them and possibly who we are. Until we're sure we can trust you to watch our backs instead of stabbing us in them it's not practical to bring you with us."
Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 21/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 7 Party Treasury Monday July 11th, 2016 12:06:51 PM
After his confrontational approach to the two newcomers being taken with just more excitement from the newly introduced Bobwise and with Dorbin seeming light up just being invited to come to dinner with them Zander figures they probably are exactly what they say they are. With others to keep up the conversation he is fairly silent during most of dinner, too tired and hungry to say much. He smiles at Bobwise's antics and is caught staring a few times in impressed silence at Dorbin as he downs his food.
When the topic of K's membership being brought up he responds in the affirmative along with Martisan and proposes a toast, "A toast, to new members. Both those confirmed",, dipping his tankard to K, "and those hopeful." to Bobwise and Dorbin, "May we all be filled with courage to do what is right." And with that he downs his ale.
After that he is more conversational asking about Bobwise's and Dorbin's magical training, where they grew up, what they hope to accomplish by joining, and what they like to do. Zander freely answers questions asked of him and at some point tells the tale of the warehouse fight and his own bad fortune, or decisions, in getting tied up there in the first place.
Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14] Monday July 11th, 2016 6:37:16 PM
When Stohp mentions the possibility of them being spies, Dorbin almost chokes on a piece of meat. He says, much too loudly, "Spies? You think we can be spies? That is so cool! We could totally be spies. We could sneak in places, is that what you need? Or do we follow someone around? We can totally do that!"
When Zander starts talking about magical training, Dorbin is open in talking about his skills in conjuration and things he can conjure, even mentions he has an unseen servant behind him right now, but he doesn't mention anything about how he learned conjuration. When Bobwise starts talking about evocation, Dorbin just shrugs and says that he doesn't know anything about that sort of thing.
Bobwise (Jerry) Monday July 11th, 2016 7:43:28 PM
Bobwise, rotund and with a trained belly keeps up with Dorbin bite for bite for the first plate.
When Micah asks for "papers", Bobwise smiles. "You must indeed be tired, I offered them back at your dwelling." With a friendly smile he says, "Here ya go."
He pulls out a scroll and carefully opens it being sure that it does not get food on it. It describes a 5 year apprenticeship with one Archmage Oqebin and states that Bobwise has completed the apprenticeship with high honors and with a Evocation specialty.
"My parents manage the Manor of the Mage here on this level. I trust you know of it? Master Binny, I mean Oqebin, keeps a lab rented there if you wish to talk to him."
When Martisan mentions that K's full membership was in question, his smile lessens.
When Stohp says "Until we're sure we can trust you to watch our backs instead of stabbing us in them it's not practical to bring you with us," Bobwise sets his fork down and has to exert some self-control.
Zanderallen's tone lightens his thoughts a bit and Dorbin's humor relaxes him again.
He thinks to himself, ::Dorbin is indeed the dearest of friends. His patience and lighthearted attitude hides much wisdom. I will not be apprenticed again, however.::
He shakes his head to clear it of his own personal thoughts and smiles at Dorbin's humor.
K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10 Monday July 11th, 2016 7:51:14 PM
K looks sideways at Stohp.
"You folks already voted to let me join. I was there. Pretty sure I remember." He stretches out a bit. "...and evil can't hide from a paladin. These two aren't evil. They are sincere, excited to do good, and that should be respected."
He looks at the newcomers. "I'd be happy to adventure with both of you. I haven't known these folks long, but they're all good people. Even Stohp here, he's just slow to trust. I'm sure if you're wanting to join up, and if you're up to the task, there's probably a future here for you."
"Besides, we need arcane folks, and you two won't take up too much space at the warehouse..."
Heroes Welcome (DM Cayzle) Monday July 11th, 2016 8:35:59 PM
At the Fatted Calf, Grok Greatbelly is eager to describe the delicacy on the menu. "There are plant creatures that swim the lake shallows, always staying near the woods. They're dumb as oxen, but they can sense vibrations in the water, and whenever you go near, they dive to the bottom. The only way to hunt them is from the air. Well I got this half of a giant one, fresh caught, and I figured it would make a great meal tonight. Enjoy!" He bows and leaves you to your meal in peace and privacy, more privacy than you would get at the Toad, with all its tourists, or even at the Ghost, with adventurers flitting in and out of the fireplaces.
The party settles in and has a great conversation. Aroundabouts dessert, Grok comes by again, with a huge platter of sweets. He also has a young minotaur in tow.
He sets down the platter at the table and wipes his hands on his apron. Uncharacteristically, he seems a bit nervous. "Gentlemen and ladies, I do hate to impose. If you would, however, I'd like to introduce a young adventurer to you, and maybe to your company. He's a druid from the plains beyond the Float, staying with my uncle's family after he arrived on the Fence. I hope you won't mind chatting with him."
He ushers the newcomer forward. Now that you see him, you likely have seen him around -- a minotaur who wears kilts is going to stand out on the Fence.
[OOC: Friends, this is our newest player, Rod, and our eighth, so our game is now full. Please welcome him to the Wold and to the party.]
Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11] Monday July 11th, 2016 9:54:47 PM
The young minotaur was wearing a blue and gold linen shirt with carved bone buttons, a dark leather gladiator belt and a black leather kilt. His head was dark black in color with brown eyes. His horns curved above him creating almost a circle or ring above him. About three inches below the tip were gold rings wrapped around the horn that were in fact goldwashed leather. In his right ear was a blood red loop from which hung an exquisitely carved acorn. He also wore a well carved torc of leaves accented with acorns that matched a carved bone ring in both style and color that he wore on his right index finger.
When Grok had introduced him, he bowed his slightly at the table of adventurers. "I am Bartomus and I am glad to make your acquaintence." He extended his right hand out at the party of adventurers seated around the table.
Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 11/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14 Monday July 11th, 2016 10:24:09 PM
[OOC: Welcome to Lakeview Passage, Rod! Small clarification - Martisan was reminding Stohp that K has already been accepted.]
Martisan chuckles at Stohp's suspicion of Dorbin and Bobwise, eyeing the energetic halfling and his quiet friend with an amused grin. "I don't know how easy it would be for these two to pull off such a ruse." She shakes her head, smiling. "I haven't met anyone as adept at such disguises as you, my friend. Well... nobody that I recognized." She gives the minotaur a wink, "I look forward to hearing the latest information you discovered."
Martisan raises her glass with Zanderallen's toast, beaming at each of the toastees in turn. "Hear hear!"
As the night draws on, Martisan's spirits continue to rise, erasing the last vestiges of her sour tiredness.
She smiles up at Grok as he reappears, amused at the normally bold minotaur's nervousness. "Any more and we might get a little too merry!" she laughs, elbowing K in the arm as if to make her joke funnier. "Pleased to meet you, Bartomus!" Martisan greets the newest member to their table. She raises her glass in a silent toast while motioning to an empty chair with the same hand, spilling a bit of her drink in the process.
"Please join us." She says more calmly after clearing her throat and setting the glass down, embarrassed by her momentary lack of decorum. "I've only ever met one druid before," she says with a glance to the other Silver Shields, "You don't have a thing for rats, do you?" She asks the uniquely adorned minotaur.
Micah (John) HP: 16/16 AC: 15/10/15 CMD:13 Monday July 11th, 2016 11:08:04 PM "By references I meant recommendations from people we might know. Papers speak to your training, but not necessarily your character," says Micah calmly. To soften any slight such frankness might provide, he smiles warmly and adds dryly, "It appears, however, that a lack of character is not a deficiency you are troubled with." At this last he glances briefly at Martisan expecting her, at least, to catch the dual meaning.
To Zanderallen's toast, Micah responds with a hearty, "Hear, hear," and joins his brother in Domi in bottoming up his glass.
He has no trouble extending these two the same opportunity K was given and nods in assent as the others express their willingness to give them a chance.
Throughout the rest of the meal Micah is quietly affable, occasionally asking a question of the newcomers to keep the conversation going. When Grok introduces another newcomer, he expectantly receives the introduction and rises in response to the offered hand. "Micah Smith. I am pleased to meet you as well." He reaches for the empty chair Martisan indicated, moving it invitingly closer to the young minotaur. "Please tell us about yourself and your possible interest in being a part of the Silver Shield."
[OOC: last post from John this week; Zachary will handle the rest. Welcome, welcome, and welcome to our new players.]
Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11] Tuesday July 12th, 2016 12:08:05 AM
"The pleasure is mine." Bartomus returned the hand shake and took the prooffered seat. "As to rats, no I really don't like the things. Nasty creatures at times." He smiled and took a drink from the tankard he had been holding in his left hand.
"I grew up in the Plains, before finding my way to the Float. My clan raised me, orphaned I guess you could say, they would be a part of the Ahote people. When I arrived here with pretty much nothing but a lot of hopes and some talents, Grok and others of the Taur helped me along. Soon, I was turning my carvings into coin and have been doing so for about four years now."
He too another swig from the tankard. "I can mend a wound, heal a slash. My size can be an incentive to cooperate. In addition to the carving, I can fix and mend things. So, i think I could be of some assistance to you all in your endeavors."
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14 Tuesday July 12th, 2016 12:14:22 AM "You're right K, I'm sorry I just forgot momentarily. It's been a long day."
Siting up in her chair again she reaches out to examine the offered papers from Bobwise. After a few hrms and hums she offers it to anyone else who wants to look at it. "Looks right, though any spy could forge such a document. I've done that myself once or twice. I'll get up early tomorrow, visit your former teacher. If he confirms your story then we can do what we did with K. You'll join the group, work with us, and after a day or two we'll induct you officially."
Realizing her suspensions might seem a little harsh she grins a little. "Don't worry about it I'm a paranoid old cow. I'm sure everything will check out and you'll be slinging spells with us by lunch."
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14 Tuesday July 12th, 2016 12:17:26 AM
Turning her attention to the newcomer, Stohp responds to Bartomus' bow with a slight nod. "That's a familiar story. My sister and I were robbed minutes after arriving and survived a year on the streets before we met Grok; he took us in. I even carve some myself to make a living, usually small toys though occasionally some furniture. We'll have to compare notes and/or crafts."
Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11] Tuesday July 12th, 2016 12:28:43 AM
"We could do that, barring any paranoia of course," he smirked and then gave her a wink with a chuckle. "Both my torc and the ring are a couple of examples of my work. Bone and wood are what I work in. Buttons too like these. Grok and the others have been amazing sponsors." Bartomus found something that was green and leafy to taste and chew.
K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10 Tuesday July 12th, 2016 9:23:05 AM
K happily accepts Bartomus' hand. "Do you go by Bart for short? We've got a short-name thing going here. K, Stohp, Micah, Zander. There's Martisan, but she's fancy anyway.
"If you three are sure you want to stick around, you should know we're investigating a cult known for some pretty shady and violent practices. It requires subterfuge, which I have none of." He points to Zander. "Wouldn't be surprised if this here paladin of Domi was the same way. There's a reason Stohp goes off on his own when the need for sulking around comes up."
Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11] Tuesday July 12th, 2016 9:33:33 AM
"I could get use to it...hmh...Bart, sure let's give it a try." He smiled after shaking K's hand. "Um as to sulking and hiding, I am not sure I wouldn't stick out in most of the crowds about here. But, I could try to find other ways of helping I am sure."
Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 21/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 7 Party Treasury Tuesday July 12th, 2016 9:55:41 AM
A little worried at first at want might make Grok nervous, the introduction of a new applicant quickly brightens Zander's face. "I think we can chat with the lad Grok. Least we can do after this meal. It is delicious." Standing to greet the newcomer he offers his hand as well, "Hello Bartomus. I'm Zanderallen, but as K as already mentioned feel free to call me Zander. So you're a druid. Haven't met many druids, last one I met tied me up and was going to feed me to his pet rats. But I won't hold that against you." He finishes his statement with a grin, excited by all the new applicants. "If the three of you wish to join I say the more the merrier. We'll check up on your references and take you on for a probation period. In this line of work it seems you often find out if you can trust someone pretty quick. If it works out you'll probably be full members pretty quick. In the fairness of full disclosure we are working to free a young girl from being indoctrinated by the Hands of Love. Given K and my propensity to start whacking things it will probably get dangerous. If you're still in I'm glad to have you all along. After we finish here we'll head back to our HQ to plan our next move."
Bobwise (Jerry) Tuesday July 12th, 2016 3:50:32 PM
When Bobwise hears Grok mention that they are caught while flying, he is instantly and overwhelmingly interested. "You have to fly to catch them? I love flying. Well, at least I know I will love flying....someday. While still a toddler I saw the flying carpets flying up to the Overlord's Palace. It was the first time I thought of being a wizard someday....to fly.
"Please tell me all about it, Grok? He places a generous tip on the table to hold his place and follows him back to the bar."
He suddenly realizes he needs to reply to the group. So he turns quickly and says, "All that sounds great! I'm very excited!"
Then knowing he should say more, but NEEDING to hear about this airborne way of hunting, he follows Grog.
"I'll be right back," he quips over his shoulder.
Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14] Tuesday July 12th, 2016 4:03:21 PM
When Stoph mentions investigations, Dorbin again gets quiet. He says nothing as Stoph mentions checking out Bobwise and he fades into his chair. When the massive Bart arrives, his eyes grow wide and he openly stares, his mouth open. Clearly he has never seen a minotaur like this before.
Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 11/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14 Tuesday July 12th, 2016 4:23:22 PM
Martisan grins at Micah, "They'll fit right in." She says, sitting back and relaxing as the group appears to all be getting on well.
As Zander and K give a general sense of their current mission, Martisan stands up on her chair, no longer interested in the food, and pats the air with her hands, palms out. "Now now... we're helping a local business owner reconnect with his daughter after they faced some hard times, while investigating rumors and unsavory whispers surrounding the aforementioned 'cult'."
Her look, though no less friendly, indicates that until she has seen proof of the Hands of Love's rumored cruel methods herself, they remain little more than rumors and gossip. To her knowledge, none of the Silver Shield but K, perhaps before he joined, had any direct experience with the cult followers of the goddess Caeroldra.
"It's a messy, secretive plot we're trying to untangle & keep from spewing more trouble into our neighborhood." Martisan says, rubbing her hip absentmindedly as she's reminded of their day's rigors.
Come Together (DM Cayzle) Tuesday July 12th, 2016 9:49:49 PM
Bartomus, a druid and crafter, tells the Silver Shield about himself.
Martisan grows friendly and a bit sloshed!
Micah is willing to give the newcomers a chance ... and asks to learn more.
Stohp realizes that she is a bit suspicious, and engages with the new folks to compensate. She shares some of her own story.
K, he of the shortest name in the group, gives young Bartomus a nickname -- "Bart"!
Zanderallen reassures Grok and explains the mission to rescue the young woman in its broad outlines.
Grok tells Bobwise that his money is no good here. And the young mage will see the flying carpet taxis of the Float if he visits the uppermost level of the Big Float. "You need to hire one to get to the Palace, you know," he says.
Dorbin is quiet -- he seems a bit in awe of the adventurers with whom he shares this large table -- especially the minotaurs.
Martisan begins to go into more depth about the mission -- to rescue a girl who has been inducted into a cult called the "Hands of Love," who are overpassionate devotees of the god of passions.
The meal is sumptuous; the desserts are delicious. The centerpiece is a rare salmonberry tart, but Grok keeps the serving size small -- especially for the halflings -- since the berry has the property of fostering sleep.
After drinks for the road and farewells to Grok, the party adjourns to the rehabbed warehouse home of the group. Once there, before bed, perhaps it is time to plan the next move. Your newest members need to know what the morning will bring, so that they can prepare the right spells, for example.
What is next, veteran Shields? What do you plan for the next day?
Perhaps the newest members can bed down in the large front room until permanent accommodations are assigned.
Bobwise (Jerry) Tuesday July 12th, 2016 11:29:12 PM
Wishing he could learn more about this hunting of plant fish with flying carpets, he returns to the group sitting next to Dorbin and clapping a hand on his friend's shoulder. "Exciting day, huh? Are you glad we came?"
As the group prepares to leave he tells Grog, "Thanks! That was great!" Mentally he notes that he has to learn more about these plant fish and how they are hunted. Hunted from the air? Really!
He cheerfully follows along. As they reach the warehouse, he follows them in and looks around him to take it all in looking for details and wanting to memorize his perceptions of the place. He looks for a place to sit.
Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11] Wednesday July 13th, 2016 1:24:24 AM
Bartomus grabs the few things he had tucked away in a storage room in Grok's establishment. The pack had a few key things and his glaive was sheathed. But, it like him could stick out in a crowd. Most of his pieces were on consignment in a few shops and any commissions he had, he could work on as time permitted. He followed along with the others as they walked to the Shield's warehouse. He followed inside and looked about to get a sense of the place.
K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10 Wednesday July 13th, 2016 8:29:27 AM
K notes Bart's weapon of choice. "Polearm, eh? That should synergize well with my bow. There's not a lot of melee punch in our group, so on the few occasions we've had to fight, I've had difficulties keeping the bad guys away. Maybe having to come within reach of that thing will convince them to keep their distance. I'll stick close to you when it hits the fan, assuming that's jake with you."
As they walk, K takes note of anything else he can notice about his new companions. The paladin walks with an easy grace, his leather armor affording more range of motion than the typical plate worn by most holy warriors. A basic rapier is attached to his belt, but it looks like K spent most of his weapon budget on his bow. It's a nice piece of work. He doesn't seem to smile much, but he's still pretty darn good looking. Even after the day they've had, his hair still looks great.
When they arrive back home, he heads to his quarters. He never really got a chance to unpack. It's not messy, but not pretty either. It was important to respect your quarters. At least he thought it was. He makes a note to wake early and finish putting stuff away. Right now, he was dead tired & needed to sleep.
Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11] Wednesday July 13th, 2016 10:09:19 AM
"Aye, but a sling is a great surprise weapon and it will work well with that bow. Good choice there," Bartomus replied.
Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 21/23 AC: 27 T: 19 FF: 26 CMD: 7 Party Treasury Wednesday July 13th, 2016 2:06:33 PM
Zander gives his compliments to Grok for the meal and leaves with the others back to the warehouse. As he walks his chainmail rattles under his tunic, emblazoned with Domi's crest and with a WLA badge pinned on. His face wears it's customary boyish grin as he marches along in almost military cadence. His hammer swings at his belt although there is a empty spot next to it where it looks like a sword would hang. His confident demeanor and natural good looks, along with a strong physique, make him a prominent figure.
As they enter the warehouse he exlaims, "Ah, it's good to be back home. Welcome to Silver Shield HQ. It's not much yet but if you three want to bunk in this central room go ahead. We're still getting the place set up how we want and you'll get to be a part of that if you join us permanently."
After everyone has had a chance to put their things away, Zander calls everyone together. Taking charge by instinct as he has for most of his life. His manner is pleasant and open as he moves on to business, "Looks like we've got a full squad to take on the Hands of Love now. I know there are some concerns about trusting the newcomers but they seem alright to me and have no evil in their hearts. They want to come along and join us in doing some good here and we can use the help. As to taking on the Hands, we need to act quickly. I don't like this indoctrination Shredds mentioned. Briselda is in deep enough as it is, we need to get her out quickly and if that means taking down the Hands then that's what we have to do. Shredds mentioned they had a warehouse somewhere, anyone have any leads?"
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14 Wednesday July 13th, 2016 2:09:13 PM
Thanking Grok, Stohp starts mentally reviewing the day and what she learned. She's rather annoyed that, on review, all she really found out was the location of the Hands base, or at least a warehouse that they went to. The idiots who attacked them ruined her plans and she never had much chance to try them again. On the other hand, pretending to be a recruit to the Hands might have ended badly in other ways, and she hadn't told the others what she had schemed, so it was possibly a good thing that interruptions prevented it.
She gets so wrapped on up her thoughts she doesn't even realize that the applicants had waltzed right in with the group and were now looking about with interest. Frowning, she momentarily considers trying to kick them out, but no one else seems to mind. It seems K's detect evil and the letter they brought are enough to convince the rest of the party as to their good intentions. It'd be silly to argue the point further, or at least futile; she doubts she'd win the argument. Not to mention if they are here in good faith it would poison the relationship with the new guys. Silently she resolves to enjoy proclaiming "I told you so!" if they are betrayed. True she might be making that statement from within whatever afterlife they end up in, but she'll be sure to enjoy the moment regardless if it comes.
Micah (Zachary posting for John) HP: 16/16 AC: 15/10/15 CMD:13 d6=3 ; Wednesday July 13th, 2016 2:32:29 PM
Micah smiles at Bobwise's excitement over flying, but in his mind he is saddened by remembrance of another wizard with a love of flying. Offering a quick prayer for Pesmer's well being he joins the others in thanking Grok and going back to the warehouse. Once there he goes to his area, cleaning up from the day's excitement and arranging his things neatly in their places.
As Zander gathers them all together Micah looks on slightly bemused at the young paladin, wondering at how he could jump so quickly from one thing to the next in the course of a day. Hearing out his opening words he adds, "We were able to talk to Briselda today but the Hands may take action to prevent that from happening again. A confrontation may be the only way to see her. And there is the Garden's commissioner that Shredds has asked us to remove."
" Also I believe I still see some more serious injuries from our fight, Aid us Domi", Micah channels Domi's power to heal the group.

Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 14/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14 Wednesday July 13th, 2016 2:37:54 PM
As the group approaches the warehouse, Martisan subtly turns the clasp on her black cape. Fashioned in the shape of a shamrock, the golden clasp issues forth a shimmer of magic, which, running along the length of the pristine cape's purple lining, seems to deepen the pitch of the black fabric.
Just ahead of the group, the large door to the warehouse swings quietly inward, revealing a big (mostly empty) front room, with doors leading further into the warehouse. After such a stylish entrance, the warehouse itself might seem a bit lacking. Although the common areas are clean and well-kept, there's a noticeable lack of furniture, and little in the way of decoration.
"There's a few crates left from the previous occupant - that's about the best we've got for seating at the moment," She adds to Zander's comment, "and I hope you folks brought something to bed down with, if you're planning on doing it here." Martisan looks from Bobwise to Dorbin and Bartomus, the hint of a flush creeping into her cheeks. "You're welcome to stay, we've got plenty of room, but like he said we just haven't quite decided exactly what we're doing with the place yet."
As everyone settles in, Martisan slips out of her backpack and pulls out her inkwell, quill, and journal. Taking a seat on the floor against one wall, she starts running through the information they have without much ado, giving Micah and his patron a short nod in thanks. "Exactly. Shredds, the Turtlebook bookie in charge of the Gardens, offered us a deal - he says if we take the Hands' Security Commissioner, 'Six', out of the picture by some means, he'll forgive Matheus' debts, and says he can restore order in the Gardens. He said The Hands have a base here on the Fence Level somewhere." Seeming to remember something, Martisan digs through her pack, and pulls out a sack of gold, which she tosses to Stohp. "Shredds gave us 50 gold pieces each for advance payment." She says with a smile.
"I suggest we take the morning tomorrow to ask around and find the Hands' base on the Fence, and then maybe scope the place out to get a sense of it and try to locate the Commissioner's office and/or find Briselda."
Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11] Wednesday July 13th, 2016 8:47:08 PM "So who exactly are the Hands? Why do they have this girl?" Bartomus asked aloud.
Dorbin [AC:13/13/10 HP:17/17 CMD:14] Wednesday July 13th, 2016 8:54:32 PM
Dorbin looks around the large front room and mumbles to no one in particular, "Wow, the lair of the Silver Shields..."
When the boxes and bedding are mentioned, Dorbin takes a seat on a box and looks at the ground behind hit. "This place looks fine to me. Its nicer than plenty of places I've called home before."
As the talk turns to finding the hands and searching them out, Dorbin says quietly, "Well, if you find papers, I can read pretty good, even secret ones..."
Come Together (DM Cayzle) Wednesday July 13th, 2016 9:03:19 PM
Bobwise brings a halflings obsessive enthusiasm to the idea of hunting from the air. Before he leaves the Fatted Calf, Grok tells him that the night's Dire Kine was hunted by a druid with an eagle animal companion; an Animal Growth spell made the eagle large enough to ride, and the druid was able to surprise the kine before it sensed her. The flying carpet taxis of the Open Air level generally are considered too precious to risk flying over water.
Bartomus gathers a few possessions and contributes to the tactical conversation.
K engages with Bart on the walk home, but once there, it's bed that he is most desiring.
Dorbin looks around and volunteers to help, with paperwork, even, if need be!
Having walked off most of the effects of the dinner's imbibing, Martisan welcomes the new recruits to the Silver Shield home, and gives the 50-cent tour.
Micah makes sure that everyone is cured up. With channeling and a good night sleep, all injuries of the day will be gone at daybreak.
Zanderallen steps up to recap the party's goal: Reach the Hands' HQ on the Fence, evidently a warehouse, get Briselda out of there, maybe take down this fellow with the odd name of "Six," a leader in the Hands of Love. But where is that warehouse?
Luckily, Stohp's information gathering has provided an answer to that. The Hands warehouse is on Crook Court, an short trip down an alley off Crook Street. You know the general lay of the land, but if you want more detail [DM OOC: a map], then some more scouting will be needed.
Party clerk Martisan adds details and takes notes!
The young heroes bed down and enjoy a needed rest. Soon it is dawn, and with the sunrise -- the actual sun peeks through the upper story windows in from the east over the lake, and as the golden orb rises and is blocked by the roof of the Fence, the illusion of the sun shines down from the magical ceiling that makes it seem as if the Fence were open to the sky. That's an everyday miracle to you residents, and of no more note than the fact that you actually live in a giant floating city made of stone! Still, your DM marvels at that from time to time, if no one else does! :-)
With wakefulness, the casters of the party again make the time to prepare their spells. [OOC: Your merciful DM does not always want you to actually list your spells prepped each day, especially if you have a default list on your PC sheet, but since you are new, please do indulge your DM and post your prepped spells list with your next post. You too Martisan; fair's fair.]
And then to strategy! How will you approach the HQ of the Hands of Love? Just walk up and use the direct approach? Scout it out with stealth or other means? Come up with something your DMs have not anticipated?
Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11] Thursday July 14th, 2016 12:11:40 AM
Bartomus found a place to lay down a bedroll and drifted off into sleep. He awoke, rolled up his bed roll putting it aside, and then walked out the door to a quite spot along the wall of the fence. Finding a spot where he could sit and meditated he sat, slowed his breath and let the sounds and feels of the day flood over him.
His prepared the orisons that he would need. The ability to see, light the dark places, guide his bullets or striks, and read magic. Those ideas fixed in his mind and his hands rehearsed the movements and gestures that would be needed to make those happen. He rested a few moments and returned to his concentrations. His mind raced and then slowed. When it did, he saw the need to heal. He smiled, a fight could result in injuries, healing would be more than appropriate. He also saw flying acorns. He continued his mediations and the acorns continued to fly. So be it, the final spell would be that which turned his sling's bullets into ones that could do more damage. He continued his meditation and then turned his attentions to the view of the lake. With the passage of time, he felt ready for the day, stood and found his way back to the Shields warehouse. He purchased a wrap of greens along the way.
K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10 Thursday July 14th, 2016 8:26:33 AM
K wakes up. He's a bit disappointed that he does so without any better ideas on tackling The Hand than kicking down their doors and busting heads.
He sits up, stretches, sighs, and knows what he must do. He throws on his clothes and armor, says a quick prayer to Flower, and heads downstairs.
"I'm not sure how to proceed with this Hand business. My parents are priests at the temple of Flower on the Gold Level here in town. I'm going to go see if they have any advice. Anyone who wants to join me can." He doesn't wait long to find out before leaving. He skips breakfast; he's sure the food at the temple will be better than whatever's lying around the warehouse. He's absolutely leaving early enough to get to the temple in time to eat.

Zanderallen starts his day with exercise and meditation in devotion to Domi. He then gets cleaned up, he does put some effort into his appearance, and prepares his gear for the day, girding himself with both sword and hammer. Hoping K finds helpful information he sits down with the applicants to explain to him about the Hand and Briselda. How the Hand is a cult of Caeroldra that teaches to give oneself entirely over to passion that is subverting citizens of the fence and how a friend of the Sheilds has a 16 daughter who fell prey to their teachings and asked us to rescue her, which at the moment the goal is to get her to talk with her father. (OOC: That's a real brief summary, if you want more details you can read through posts or I can summarize in more detail by email, long for a post)
"Unless we have proof of the Hands misconduct we are outside the bounds of the law to break down their front door. I say we ask around at whatever sources we have and scout around the warehouse this morning and see what we can find. Meet back up after lunch and discuss further actions. I'm going to go get some special bribes and ask around among those who live on the streets. Anyone is welcome to join." Going out with whoever joins him Zander goes first to purchase a basket of fresh bread. Taking it to Crook street near the Hands HQ he passes it out to the less fortunate and asking for anything they know about the Hands or anything they've seen going on in or around their HQ. His hope is that he'll stick out less asking around handing out alms.
(Diplomacy 19, Sense Motive 23 looking for any signs of people avoiding his questions or general feelings towards the Hands among those he talks to.)

Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 14/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14 Thursday July 14th, 2016 3:41:35 PM
Martisan spends her morning as she usually does, going through a short, rigorous exercise routine and reviewing the notes in her journal. She checks over her gear to make sure everything is in order and heads downstairs.
Martisan greets the others as they rise and finish their own preparations, standing in the main room with her journal open over a crate. "I think we should scout the Hands' base before we rush in." She says as everyone comes in. "Though I'd hate to give us away through a misstep, I'd rather sneak about myself beforehand than barge in without some sense of the place. You could also scope out the Hands' warehouse while disguised, Stohp." She gives the rogue a smile, showing no hard feelings despite her little disagreement with the minotaur's methods the night before.
"We're not likely to face as lax of security as we did when we rushed in here to catch Eleazar; we should take care to try and avoid fighting through all of the Hands' forces to get to Briselda and Six, if we can. Flower's followers might have some choice wisdom for us, and it's never a bad thing to know the word on the street - do you guys want to meet up at the intersection of Crook Street and Dagger Point, after we finish gathering last minute intel, and head to the Hands' warehouse from there as we make our final plans?"
Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14 Thursday July 14th, 2016 5:22:03 PM
As promised Stohp gets up incredibly early to go visit the Archmage. While she doesn't get in to see the Archmage himself, she does confirm through a servant that the pair are known to them and gets the servant to describe the pair, satisfying herself that they aren't lying about their origins.
Not that that means they aren't spies.
Still Stohp heads back, conceding to herself that they deserve a chance and dropping the matter. She's back in time to participate in the conversation. "I can only disguise myself as people about my size. While I could disguise myself as a random taur, it feels like they're organization is small enough that they would know all the taurs in the group, so I would be caught immediately. We'd have to capture someone I could pretend to be for it to work."
Bobwise (Jerry) d20+2=9 ; d20+2=3 ; Thursday July 14th, 2016 6:13:02 PM
Bobwise wakes when the first of the others enters the main room where slept on his bedroll. He thinks how odd it is to be sleeping on his bedroll here when he has a room at the Manor across town, but shrugs it off. He wouldn't miss this for the Wold!
Seeing that K has someone going with him, he steps up to go with Zanderallen. He does not believe in going too many places by himself when adventuring. He encourages Dorbin to join with one of the two groups heading out. He joins in being friendly to the locals in the area of Crook Street, while they hand out food and ask easy questions so as to not set off anyone who is allied with the passion cultists. Such folks usually have folks watching and listening near their hub location.
He watches for anyone that might be a neighborhood watcher for the Hands of Love, though he knows. he is not an expert at such things. [Perception check of 9.]
He also tries to take the measure of the street as a whole. Are they calm? Nervous? Do things look "normal" for the Fence Level? [Perception check of 3.] Nope, nothing. Hmm...

Well done, oh my players! FWIW, if you had roleplayed out that conversation in game, I'd be handing out bonus XP rewards right now! :-) Food for thought! ]
First to rise for the day, Stohp visits the Manor of the Mage to confirm the background stories of the two new party arcanists. The clubby locale, headed by Ogebin the Mage, is in a posher part of the Fence, and the cook at the back door confirms that Bobwise was an apprentice there, and that he had a scruffy friend who hangs around a lot.
Bartomus puts some thought and some intuition into his preparations for the day.
Martisan wants to sneak around the Hands HQ and scout. She invites Stohp, newly returned from his early errand, to join her. They discuss options but have not yet headed out.
Zanderallen takes the path of "special bribery" -- that is, giving bread to the hungry! Bobwise tags along, not wanting the paladin to be out all alone. He may not be very perceptive, but the halfling mage has hidden wisdom. Dorbin joins the pair, and the trio head into the seedier parts of the Fence, seeking out the ones who are hungry, for they often have the sharpest eyes.
K voices his intention to visit his family at the Temple of Flower for advice. Micah travels with him, more curious than concerned for the doughty K.
=====
Still at the warehouse home of the Silver Shields, Bart, Stohp, and Martisan talk about how to best scope out the Hands HQ without tipping off the fanatics that the party is onto them. What's your plan, good heroes?
=====
Micah and K visit the Temple of Flower on the Merchant Level. It serves as both a temple and an infirmary. Sure, the Temple of Alemi on the Open Air level offers healing unmatched in the Wold, but the indigent and the fearful feel more at ease visiting this working-class neighborhood when they need to tend to their health or give birth. That's not news to K, of course, but it may be a revelation to the inquisitive Micah.
At the Temple, it is easy to pick out K's mom. She's the one with the headband and the colorful hibiscus-pattern muumuu dress. And she is the one who shouts out, "KARMA! Come here right now!" There's no way you can say no to your mom, especially when she outranks you in the church hierarchy. And insists on a hug. Such is life, here at the Temple of Flower.
"Sister Delphia told us you were living in a rat-hole above a blacksmith shop! Really! She said, if I can recall her words, 'He seems to have found a dimensional rift that leads straight to the Trash Level.' Is that true? Didn't we teach you better?"
Her words, however, are punctuated by kisses and more hugs.
Then she releases her son and turns to Micah. "Ah, a follower of Domi. And a friend of my son. It is a pleasure." She turns back to Karma. "Well, are you going to introduce us?"
=====
Out on the streets of the worse and poorer parts of the Fence, Zander, Bobwise, and Dorbin have no trouble at all finding people who need their free bread. Near the Crook Street area, Zander's hunches suggest that the neighborhood kids will know more, especially the grubbier ones. Bobwise is no use at the hunt, but Dorbin sees an 8-year-old girl at play with some stones around one corner.
"Thanks!" she mutters around a mouthful of bread, chewed hard. "This is good." She looks ready to scamper off, except she is eyeing another large roll in Zander's basket.
K (Carl) HP: 20 AC:25/22/21 CMD:10 Friday July 15th, 2016 8:44:48 AM
K sighs inwardly, but of course hugs his mother back. "Mother, this is Micah. Micah, this is Melody, my mother.
"...and you'll be glad to know I've moved up in the world. I'm living in a warehouse now. There are some lovely pallets to sleep on and plenty of rats to keep us company. Some of the nicest accommodations in The Fence."
His face turns serious. "Wish this were just a social visit, mom, but it's not. We've got issues. The Hands of Love are causing trouble, and there's a young woman involved that we're trying to save. Micah and I will tell you all about it over breakfast. I'm in time for breakfast, right? We should find dad too..and maybe Delphia since she obviously's taken a keen interest in my well being."
Over (hopefully) food, K fills his everyone in on the Octopus Gardens, the roving bands of self-appointed security officers roaming The Fence, and Briselda. "I was expecting an indoctrinated woman too stubborn to be saved, what I found was Brizzy, a young, happy girl who didn't realize what she had gotten herself into. She wasn't brainwashed. I let them take her away. She wanted to go, it was her choice...at least I think it was. I don't know, and I think I may have messed up by not being more forceful. You folks have always talked to me about letting those you love go, but this is The Hand we're talking about. I knew what she was getting into and I let it happen."
K's obviously upset about this, but maintains a stoic composure.
"Anyway, we want to tackle the problem. They're growing in power down in The Fence, and we aim to reverse that. We're...I'm just not sure how. They're not breaking any laws, and explaining to folks one at a time doesn't seem like a good use of time. There are a lot of those bloody cultists down there."
Bobwise (Jerry) d20+2=3 ; Friday July 15th, 2016 10:41:08 AM
Bobwise, having no luck gathering information, concentrates on helping. Especially children. As he passes out bread, he looks for a place selling jam to add to his repertoire of food options and looks for some come cakes and juicy pop as well. Whatever he can find.
As he gives out food, and some coppers, he is very aware of parents who may not approve of getting things from strangers. If such a case arises he will approach the parents instead.
Seeing that Zander and Dorbin seem to be better at getting folks to talk, he refers all thanks to them saying, "These two heroes did all the buying. It was their idea. I am just here to help. Go say thanks to them!"
To himself he thinks, ::I always thought the Fence Level to be pretty much a single demographic--working class. It surprises me to see the differences...and kinda sad really.::
He keeps his demeanor friendly and positive while working the street, but inside his mood is a bit darker. He doesn't give up on gathering information himself, but doesn't hold out much hope. [perception check failure, natural 1]
Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11] Friday July 15th, 2016 12:03:56 PM
Bartomus listened to the description of the cult and the challenge presented by a young maiden finding her way into their collective hands. As he was listening, he laughed aloud when the femal Taur Stoph pointed out the challenges of hiding or sneaking in a crowd for their race. "Stoph, I have a bit of an idea, I carve," he pointed to his torc and ring, "and need supplies of bone and exotic woods for the buttons and things I make. What if you and I visit the markets, we could say we were working on a joint commission something with woven hearts and hands. See if anyone offers advice or takes a lot of interest in our work. It might be a way we could help get information."
Highlight to display spoiler: { Sorry folks was in Seattle all day yesterday, so posted early in the morning and then when I took a moment to check in via phone, the discussion was such that tapping out any rational response was a bit challenging. }

Stohp (Mitch) HP: 18/18 AC: 21/18/18 CMB: +5 CMD: 14 Friday July 15th, 2016 2:14:02 PM
Stohp listens to Bart's idea respectfully, but doesn't seem convinced. "Zander and the others are already quizzing the locals for any information they can find, I'm not sure if fishing via pretense will get us anything they won't."
She leans back and thinks for a few moments. "Here's a truly mind boggling idea; lets go visit the guard. It's their job to police things, and the cult has stepped on toes everywhere we've seen them. Surely the guard has heard of them, and if they're investigating them they might have useful information. Even if they don't, with their man-power we can stake out the Hand's base and see what they're up to."
Micah (Zachary posting for John) HP: 16/16 AC: 15/10/15 CMD:13 Friday July 15th, 2016 3:04:52 PM
Micah's eyebrows shoot up as he hears K's full name but holding back a laugh he restrains himself, and with little more than a twinkle in his eyes he greets K's mother, "A pleasure to meet you Melody." He remains mostly silent, letting K do the talking but adding in details when needed. Over the food and conversation he looks around at the others at the temple observing how they live out their spiritual lives.

Zanderallen is full of smiles for the children, thinking back to his own days growing up on the streets. Taking the hint from Dorbin with a slight chuckle at the half-elf's awkwardness. With a big smile and a wink Zander passes the girl another roll and a sweet if Bobwise managed to find any, "You're quite the healthy eater, what's your name? Do you know anything about the people who own that warehouse?", pointing to the Hand's HQ, "If you could give us any information or bring someone who knows anything I might have some extra rolls here. It's really important that we learn about who's inside that warehouse."

Martisan Odenthorp (Damarr) HP: 14/15 | AC: 18 | T:14 | FF:16 | CMD: 14 Saturday July 16th, 2016 2:59:17 AM
As she discusses their plans with the minotaurs, Martisan silently berates herself for her lack of forethought the night before. "It'd have been nice to scout out the Hands' warehouse last night." She says with a wistful sigh. "Lot harder to snoop around during the day." Martisan feels a strange sense of nostalgia, remembering a former Silver Shield who often expressed similar sentiments.
The halfling shrugs, and smiles at the plan to seek out the Floating City guardsmen. "Happy, Grok, 'n the other business leaders asked us to help with these kinda issues because the guards don't like to trouble themselves with problems on the Fence. It's an excellent idea, but then we're counting on cooperation from not the most helpful of folks." She heads out with Stohp and Bartomus, thoughtfully silent while they leave the warehouse, then starts suddenly before they've gone far from the building. "You guys go ahead, I'm going to gather a few supplies. If their warehouse is anything like ours, we might be able to make a quieter entrance through an upper story window. I'm afraid at this point a direct assault may be our only other option. Any last minute gear you want me to grab?"
Bartomus [(Rod) HP: 20/20 AC: 11] Saturday July 16th, 2016 6:13:16 AM "No, I think the glaive and the sling will be the best options for me...a bit odd to wander with the glaive, but sheathed I guess I can just treat it like a walking stick." Bartomus checked his sling and it's bullet pouch. He gave a quick nod to Martisan that he was in fact prepared as best as he could be. He started off with Stohp to find the Guard's post.

At the infirmary and shrine to Flower on the Merchant Level
Gathering up Daneel, her husband, and Delphia, K's theosophy mentor, the formidable Melody quickly finds a table in the refectory, where a novice brings them a simple meal of bread, poached fish, and a few oranges to share among them. K knows that the oranges would not generally appear at this meal, but it is a sign that his mother is celebrating.
Micah listens intently and is polite, but says little of substance. He keeps his eyes open, looking for insight into how these followers of Flower live. He observes that they seem to follow an "order," that is, a pattern for living a reflective life. Bells ring from time to time to signal the end of one activity and the start of another. Most of the devoted followers -- "brothers" and "sisters" they are called, judging by the way they address each other -- dress simply in clean plain clothes. There are only a few wearing the headband and floral pattern outfit like Melody wears. Micah also sees one person dressed all in grey and wearing a flower mask; mostly people ignore that fellow as he helps them out with all manner of chores and tasks. The greatest hustle and bustle, where the routine of order is broken, is in the great infirmary ward-room where common folk come for care; Micah and K passed through that as they entered.
Over the meal, K explains everything, everything about the Silver Shield's quest to rescue this girl, this young woman, from the Hands of Love. When he says this, "She wanted to go, it was her choice...at least I think it was. I don't know, and I think I may have messed up by not being more forceful ..." Daneel raises his hand to interreupt.
"Son, wait. Go no further with your self-recriminations. I know that by training you see solutions with force. And do not get me wrong -- there is evil in this Wold that cannot be stopped else by force. That's why I have supported you in this path you have taken." He glances at Melody, and K is reminded that his mother was less "supportive." Daneel continues, "But we do not follow Ga'al, who tries to force all to do as he knows best. No, we counsel, convince, and cooperate." K knows that's a saying among Flower folk. "You were right not to coerce. If she is to leave the cult, it must be through suasion, not by the sword."
K finishes his story, and then Sister Delphia weighs in. "Karma," she says, "you know that the mysteries of life remain mysterious. Why do the divine intervene in life? What is our place in nature and existence? Why do some find faith in one, and others in another? How can opposing divinities even exist in the same multiverse?" These words are well worn stones from her mouth; K has heard her say this on many occaisions. Then she says something unexpectd. "Now that you are out in the Wold, it is your duty to help others understand their choices. Not to force those choices," and she nods to Daneel, "but to ensure that those choices are freely made. Go, give this girl her choice. That is a noble thing to do. I am proud of you."
"Well, yes, of course we are all proud," says Melody. "But you need some practical advice too. First off, Caeroldra is Flower's mother, as you know, and between mothers and their children there can never be hatred. Between Ga'al and Domi," and she nods to Micah, "there is anger and hate. Between Caeroldra and Flower there is sorrow and love."
"Therefore, do not hate the Hands of Love, whatever their offense. Stop them from doing evil, yes. Convince those you can to turn from the path that requires compliance with their perversions. But we do not want a war between Caeroldra and Flower in this city. Do you understand me, K? No holy war! We do not want the town crier to shout that a paladin of Flower has cut down a high priest of Caeroldra! Your squabbles on the Fence must not rock the Float!" She glares fiercely at her son.
Then her voice softens. "That is Mother Melody speaking, K." K knows that when she invokes her title of Mother, she is speaking as a hierarch. But for her to call him K is a concession and a sign of love. "Speaking as your mom, I just ask you not to get killed. Okay?"

Back on the Fence, Bobwise worries that parents will be concerned about strangers handing out food and goodies to children. But on reflection, he puts his worries away. Here on the Fence, he knows, there are bad guys, for sure. But monsters? Monsters who would poison or mistreat kids? If such monsters are to be found on the Float, it would be in the darkness of the Trash Level, but not here. Yes, gangs run on the Fence, and thieves, and even the odd assassin. The Fence is not safe for a lone adult, sure, and even seasoned adventurers may be set upon ... but children run here and there across the Fence, and everyone -- even the hardened blackguards and bouncers and bagmen -- look out for them. Reflecting on these matters, perhaps his mood lightens? Perhaps he is reassured.
Dorbin, more focussed on the practical, silently nudges Zander and urges him to talk with the girl.
Zanderallen warms to the girl, and she to him. She talks with her mouth full about her life, and Zander sees a lot of his own experiences growing up. They even know some of the same people, like that old chef who cooks at the Sifting Sands restaurant and who leaves out his scraps and leftovers sometimes. There's a new lady like that, the girl tells him, who brings out food every night aroundabouts where Zander is pointing. "She's nice, and she got some fancy food too! Like CAKE!"
It may occur to Zander that showing his face at the Hands central strong point might lead to conflict that the three of them alone might be hard-pressed to resist ...

Back at the Silver Shield HQ, Bartomus has a clever idea! He recalls a market over by that way, and he knows he could shop that area without raising a stir. In fact, he has visited a couple stalls over that way before. A guy buys buttons from him, and there's a knife seller he likes. And since he's new, no one will know him as a Silver Shield.
Small and sneaky. Martisan mentions scouting by night. That would mean a day of delay, though ...
Stohp suggests visiting the local guard outpost. There are four, of course, one at each of the corners where people can ascend to a higher level in the Float. Some people think that those guards are guarding the upper Float from the riff-raff in the Fence and the Trash. But Stohp knows that they have the job of policing things and fighting criminals. Surely they will be able to help.
Three ideas, three paths ... none mutually exclusive. One or all three? Each to his own path, or three together taking them one at a time? What do you do?
